St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. St Thomas is the shopping center of the Caribbean with duty free shopping and a vibrant nightlife. Charlotte Amalie is the capital city of the United States Virgin Islands with its huge natural harbor, bustling port and vistas that will take your breath away. Try our underwater delights, bask on a beach, soak up some sunshine, sail into sunset or hike the trails. You can see why we call this "America’s Paradise." As the Governor of the United States Virgin Islands, I assure you that we will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Our people are warm and friendly. We will welcome you in conversation. Don’t hesitate to ask people for directions or shopping tips. Our people are eager to help you enjoy your visit. I extend to you my warmest greetings and hope you enjoy your vacation in the United States Virgin Islands, this year celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Transfer Day!

Josephine’s Dessert & Wine – 340-473-6570 No sweet tooth required at Josephine’s, downtown Christiansted’s chilled-out destination for crushable treats of the sugar-dusted, caramel-slathered, and fruity-with-a-crisp-dry-finish kind. The house-made desserts reign supreme, but you can grab a chair, sip a glass of cellar-temp vino, and let the vintage soundtrack (and cranked A/C) wash over you while the sugar addicts in your crew do their thing. Namely: velvety cheesecake with prosecco-softened strawberries. Death-by-chocolatestyle pot de crème. Silky banana-chocolate panna cotta topped with ripe local fruit, then hit with the business end of a blowtorch. On the off-chance you get tempted, turns out smoky añejo tequila pairs magically with any chocolate-leaning dessert ($7 each; three for $19) getting spin-doctored around and around your table’s Lazy Susan. Just saying. Tuesday – Saturday, 5 pm – 11 pm. Luncheria — 340-773-4247 This restaurant is an institution on St. Croix - a taste of Mexico in Christiansted for 37 years! FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO THE VIRGIN ISLANDS!
Meet Cover Artist Mandy Thody “South Africa was my home as a child and this strong influence is evident in my watercolors in terms of subject matter and use of earth tones. As a teenager I learned batik, weaving, and dressmaking, assisting myself through university by designing clothes and shop windows, and by teaching sewing, handcrafts and adult literacy in the township/squatters camp near Capetown. In 1985, I left South Africa, met my then husband as a cruising sailor, reaching England together after a couple detours to the VI, where my son was born, and the East Coast of the US before finally crossing the Atlantic. I began to paint and draw on silk with blue to turquoise backgrounds and depictions of marine and bird life and mermaids. During the 90s in England, where my daughter was born, I began to draw more and try watercolors. My primary interest in drawing people, began to re-assert itself then. My paintings increased in size and brightness once I returned to the Caribbean in 2000. Many were West Indians portraits, local flora, fauna, and mythological subjects. I exhibited work in Grenada, Carriacou, Bequia, and Antigua. Since then, I have lived in the Virgin Islands. My painting “Leather-hat Rasta” won the watercolor prize at the 2002 Caribbean Colors Exhibition, and “Bright Robe,” one of my first pastels, won a drawing media prize in their 2003 show.

and programs benefiting two rural communities. Our belief is that all humans have the minimum right to stability, peace, and basic resources. I still live on St. Croix, but travel to Haiti frequently. Our programs, to develop these communities in a holistic way, depend on donations. Our agriculture program feeds the schools, our small business loans and microcredit enable families to climb out of poverty and get their children to school, scholarships help older children get places in grade schools and better jobs, adult literacy and craft classes improve Dry Season Bride
Beauty
During 2003 I began to teach ceramics at Maho Bay Camps on St. John. The availability of their studio, and the assistance and encouragement of the ceramicist, Gail Van de Bogurt, enabled me to expand into ceramics as my primary medium producing dolls, animals, busts, platters, tiles and large reliefs. My daughter, Merryn, is a keen sculptor, too, and we cooperated on many projects. In the summer of 2005 we built a workshop ashore in Johnson Bay, with a Raku kiln, allowing me to produce several large commissions. At the end of 2006, I moved to St Croix, after 22 years of living on and sailing boats, to the rainforest north of Frederiksted. My studio is in and around the ruins of an old Danish plantation in Little La Grange. farmed by the Lawaetz family for four generations. Contemplating the forest, scenery and ruins woke a feeling in me for the land, most readily seen in my stoneware and raku figures of Faeries, Elves and Spirits of the woodland. The history of this area includes the Arawak/ Carib Amerindian, Maroon, and Danish Colonial periods allowing a plethora of inspiration! By 2011 we had completed our larger studio in a restored building. Since 2013, I have been the Administrative Director of Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti, a 501C3 non-profit with two schools

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!
(340) 776-0656. Page 38 • Oc tober / November 2018
St. Croix Welcomes a Rebuilt Sentry Box at Ft. Christiansvaern
Young Danish visitors take turns standing in the guardhouse.
by Nina York Most of us grow accustomed to a daily routine that includes passing through a familiar territory with its many detailed parts that only register marginally in our consciousness. But if that order changes and one or more of the familiar objects suddenly is gone, we may not immediately recognize what is missing, but we know something is not like before. This can cause concern and anxiety. Last year’s hurricanes Irma and Maria did a massive job of disarranging our familiar territory, and while most Crucians may not be frequent visitors at Christiansted National Historic Site’s Fort Christiansvaern, they may have noticed something familiar was missing at the entrance. The missing item, the friendly red sentry box or guardhouse, was a favorite among visitors of all ages, allowing posing for a jolly photographic memento of their visit. It was an important part of the defense of the Fort for many years; in a watercolor by Danish Lt. Beenfeldt dating from 1815 we see a red guardhouse, albeit placed in the middle of the wharf area, showing a uniformed soldier on duty next to it. The September 2017 storms damaged the contemporary guardhouse, necessitating its removal. While it carried the insignia of the Danish King Christian VIII, who reigned from 1839 to January 1848, there is no reason to believe it dated from that time. As someone who over the years has conducted hundreds of tours of the Fort for visitors, especially Danes, the writer recognized the important role the guardhouse played for visitors from Denmark. Red guardhouses are an important fixture at Copenhagen’s Royal Palace and the changing of the guard there is a favorite part of a visit there. The Danish friendship organization known as the Danish West Indian Society has existed for over 100 years and has generously supported festivals, exchanges, publications and exhibits relating to the former Danish colony. Their leaders were asked and gladly consented to sponsor with a very nice donation a rebuilt guardhouse at the site of the damaged one. One important change, however: The new one will be capable of being brought indoors to be safely stored in case of another storm, yet properly anchored to prevent anyone taking it home as a souvenir! While the guardhouse may not serve its original purpose, it is part of the large legacy of former days that remains here. The fact that we still possess so many traces of a dramatic and tragic past gives this place its unique character, fostering curiosity and research about its history from many sources in the United States and abroad. Nina York, born in Denmark but a St. Croix resident since 1976, has been a contributor for this publication since 2009 and was its Managing Editor from 1990 - 2003. She now offers tours for visitors from Denmark and the mainland, does translations, and volunteers for Rotary and the Friends of Denmark Society.

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!
Contingency Plan
For a Destination Wedding, the average couple spends about 50-100 hours planning and about $3000+ in pre-planning costs. This spending occurs before venues are booked, vendors are selected, and contracts are signed. Much of the fiscal portion of pre-planning is spent on site visits. My colleagues and I have held several meetings with perspective clients on a site visit whose weddings are a year or more out. They want to see what they are paying for, what the weather might be like that time of year, the angle of the sun as they say ‘I do,’ and other data they can collect. They also want to get a feel for the venue and perspective vendors in person. I understand the need to do this and feel it can be beneficial. This level of planning and research usually pays off and everything goes according to plan; I have also experienced the opposite. Every wedding has a story and some include a crisis. I can speak for every wedding vendor when I say there is a superhuman part of your brain you must access when issues, varying from bad weather, family discord, wardrobe malfunction, cold feet, or illness, arise on the day of a skillfully-planned wedding. A seasoned professional has a Contingency Plan—several in fact. In addition to managing your own professional game plan amid a crisis, you may be called upon for emotional support, advise, counseling, mediating, or become messenger, seamstress, emergency bridesmaid, waiter, even officient, that you are unlicensed or unqualified to perform. When I begin working with a new wedding client, we talk about their goals for the day and their lives as well. An experienced Wedding Professional will know how to glean information that will be helpful to their process on the day of the wedding even if terror strikes. If your vendors are like me, they will ask lots of questions even some that are uncomfortable. The more your key vendors know about you, the better the service they can provide. Sweet Bottom Dive Center—Back Stronger Than Ever! Sweet Bottom Dive Center, located at the Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa had been closed since September 2017, due to the consequences of Hurricane Maria, but will reopen along with the Resort in 2019. The Linse family had contemplated opening a second location on St. Croix for some time, and now the timing was right. A dive shop property at Cane Bay became available and, after several meetings, were awarded the lease for that location. With significant damage to the property, the owners rebuilt it to Miami Dade hurricane standards resulting in a beautiful 2,200 square foot facility. Sweet Bottom Dive Center @ Cane Bay will boast a spacious retail area, high tech, A/C classroom, rental equipment area featuring Aqua Lung and Apeks, guest equipment storage area, repair center, state-of-the-art air fill center, concrete baths for washing equipment, outdoor showers, and public restrooms! Variety is the spice of life, they say. And variety at the Reef Golf Course is what you get. In addition to a beautiful 9-hole course and driving range overlooking Teague Bay on St. Croix’s East End, you can also choose Disc Golfing—a 9-basket course that’s easy and fun to play. Also known as Frisbee Golf, for those unfamiliar, this is a flying disc game as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, the object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc. Growing in popularity every year, the game is played in about 40 countries around the world. The first known instance of anyone playing golf with a flying disc occurred in Bladworth, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1926 when some elementary school kids played a game throwing tin plates at targets, such as trees and fence posts, calling the game Tin Lid Golf. They played on a regular basis on a disc golf course they laid out on their school grounds but the game came to an end as they got older and went their separate ways. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Disc Golf would be reintroduced to Canadians at the Canadian Open Frisbee Championships in Toronto. Modern Disc Golf started in the early 1960s, when it seems to have been invented in many places and by many people independently. Students at Rice University in Houston, Texas, for example, held tournaments with trees as targets as early as 1963, and in the early 1960s, players in Pendleton King Park in Augusta, Georgia would toss Frisbees in 50-gallon barrel trash cans designated as targets This game has now made its way to St. Croix at The Reef Golf Course. Discs are available for rent or purchase. The course is open Tuesday – Sunday, 8 am – 3 pm. Stunning ocean views; game suitable for all ages.

Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Visitors’ Bureau is located upstairs in the Frederiksted Mall and next to the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street; open weekdays Page 48 • Oc tober / November 2018
COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .50 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .35 cents, international rates are $1.20 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. The government closes for all holidays, banks close for most. Shops stay open except on major holidays. HELPFUL NUMBERS. Police, Fire, Ambulance ................ DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour! w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).
CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in63 Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Hans Lawaetz— A Special Anniversary Year for a Crucian Cattle Rancher by Nina York

Conservation Districts (NACD) Southern Region.”
The successful result was a new hybrid breed that combined the heat tolerance, insect resistance, and docile nature of N’Dama with the red color, lack of horns, good milk production and above all good beef from Red Poll. Combining the names gave rise to the breed name Senepol, which was registered.
Today, and for the past 35 years, Senepol has become synonymous with Hans Lawaetz, who followed in his father Frits Lawaetz’s footsteps as a cattle rancher. Frits, whose parents settled here from Denmark, also became an esteemed and beloved legislator in our local Senate and a generous benefactor of local charities and youth organizations. Hans became deeply involved in the raising of the Senepol breed not just for local consumption at his retail and wholesale business Annaly Farms in Estate Lower Love, but as an export commodity of live cattle or semen to a large number of tropical and sub-tropical locations in Australia, South America, Africa and other Caribbean areas. Senepol does not require lush growth for forage, a quality that no doubt is a significant contributor to its success. We can thank Hans Lawaetz for the registry of the Senepol Cattle Breeders Association that holds annual conventions where new breeding techniques are exchanged. This year’s convention, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the origin of this breed, appropriately took place here in St. Croix over four days in August and received congratulations from Governor Mapp on the important achievement and contribution to our local economy offered by the Senepol enterprise. Hans Lawaetz’s daughter Jodie Lawaetz-Mays now runs Annaly Farms, but her dad is far from retired despite his age of 81.
Hans Lawaetz’s early career included several years in the United States Air Force, and he has also in his spare time dabbled in real estate. As if all that were not enough, Governor Kenneth Mapp nominated him last November to the Virgin Islands Hurricane Resiliency Advisory Group.
While he would not want to usurp his father’s nickname, The Bull from Annaly, there seems to be a family endurance that cannot be ignored. Frits Lawaetz died at the age of 97, and Hans’s uncles Kai at 94 and Erik at 96, so we may very well expect that Hans Lawaetz will show similar survival skills. Dealing with bulls is not for weaklings!
At work in the grazing fields with a Senegal herd.
Indeed, Hans Lawaetz was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Southern Region at a regional Forum in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Southeast Region consists of nine states and two territories (Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.) The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to soil and water conservation and, as long-term President of the Virgin Islands Conservation District, he was nominated for this honor by Director of the NACD Caribbean Area Edwin Almodovar. For 16 years, Hans Lawaetz was the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee President and shepherded many local athletes, including family members, to participation in Olympic Games all over the world. This demanding task did not deter him. Because of his ancestral connection to Denmark and his close relationship to the original homestead in St. Croix, of the Lawaetz family at Estate Little La Grange north of Frederiksted that functions as a museum under family supervision, it was quite appropriate that the local Virgin Islandsw w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Uncommon Caribbean –
Real Estate Edition
by Amy Land-de-Wilde Caribbean homes have unique features that you won’t find in a common stateside home – the climate, historical occupation, vibrant and diverse culture, and geography all play a role in the design of our homes here on St. Croix. 1. Seven flags have flown over the island of St. Croix and the footprint of these early settlers can be found interspersed throughout our architecture. Structural features inspired by our forefathers include the welcoming arms staircase, Danish-brick accents, thick columns and arches, vaulted or tray ceilings, ornate balusters, and board and batten shutters. 2. Year-round sunshine, 75-85 degree temperatures and a consistent breeze from the Caribbean trade winds is the ideal climate for outdoor living! Island homes tend to have less interior space than stateside homes. However, the square footage is made up by the additional exterior living space including large galleries, sunny decks and swimming pools. And we live outside! 3. We play with more color here. From sea blues to sunset pinks, and lime greens to sunny yellows - our island homes are vibrant, colorful and instantly put you in an island state of mind! 4. Many St. Croix properties enjoy a backdrop of the Caribbean Sea. For that reason, our homes are positioned and designed specifically to highlight these beautiful views. Imagine waking up to the sun rising over Buck Island or watching it dip into the sea while entertaining friends on your gallery! 5. Due to our trade winds, open-air living is much more common than central air-conditioning. Mother Nature does a pretty good job keeping us cool year-round. However, some homeowners opt for split air-conditioning units when the breezes settle down. 6. Most homes on St. Croix have a cistern, which is a water catchment system. Rainwater is collected from the roof, which is then diverted into gutters that drain into the cistern chamber. It’s one step closer to living green and off the grid! Amy Land-de Wilde is the Regional President and Managing Broker of Coldwell Banker St. Croix Real Realty. She fell in love with the island on first sight and has lived here now for over 35 years. he Sun seems to shine every day in the Virgin Islands, but on September 22nd the Sun will shine directly over the Earth’s equator. This is the equinox and day and night will be about equal all over the Earth. It is first day of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Once the Sun has set and the sky begins to grow dark in July and August, look for the bright star-like object dominating the western sky – this is the planet Venus. By September, Venus will be lower in the sky and by October it will no longer be visible in the western sky. A somewhat less bright Jupiter will be high in the western sky. Jupiter is seen against the background of faint stars of Libra, the Scales. Saturn will be high in the eastern sky, east of the red star Antares. The red planet Mars will be lower in the eastern sky, seen against the stars of Capricorn. In September, Saturn will be very high in the east and Mars will be slightly lower. By October, Jupiter will be low in the west at sunset, Saturn will be very high in the west, and Mars high in the eastern sky. After the sky is fully dark you should be able to easily spot three bright stars which Page 64 • Oc tober / November 2018

form a large triangle. Since the triangle is visible all night long during the Summer up north, it is called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different star group or constellation. Farthest West is Vega, part of Lyra the Harp. In mythology this is the harp invented by Hermes, which Mercury gave to Orpheus, the musician who joined Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. To the South is Altair, in Aquila the Eagle. Aquila was the bird of Jove and the bearer of his thunder. It is impossible to take the fainter stars that join with Altair and really make an Eagle out of this part of the heavens. The third bright star is Deneb, marking the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see other stars which form the Swan’s body, neck and head and its wings which spread wide. Cygnus is flying south along the Milky Way. The Milky Way looks like a hazy band of light arcing across the sky. According to one legend, Phaethon, the son of the sun-god Helios, created the Milky Way when he set the sky on fire with his father’s sun-chariot. It is really the light from billions and billions of stars so far away, that all we see is their light combined into this haze.
Facing south you’ll again find the red star Antares. Antares is the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Perhaps you can find the fainter stars that make up the Scorpion’s long curved tail. The Scorpion’s claws are formed from still fainter stars spreading out toward the southwestern horizon. While these faint stars do form the Scorpion’s claws, they are actually the stars of another constellation, Libra, the Scales. “Shooting stars”, more properly meteors, are flashes of light that happen so quickly that by the time you tell a friend “look there”, the meteor will be gone. Meteors are caused by pebble sized bits of rock burning up as they pass through the air some 50 miles above the Earth. The bright light of the nearly Full Moon will block out all but the brightest meteors on the night of July 28th to 29th, the maximum of the Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower. August 12th to 13th is the maximum of one of the best meteor showers, the Perseids, which produces up to 60 meteors per hour. Once again, the nearly Full Moon will block many of the fainter meteors of the Orionid Meteor Shower which peaks on the night of October 21st to 22nd. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
