Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise. St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its off-shore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.

St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history. St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is also among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts. Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. While Kris Chhabria’s store is a fresh addition to Main Street, he brings with him more than two decades as a jewelry professional and is a graduate gemologist from GIA. Visitors from around the world know Kris from his jewelry store in Alaska. That’s why he decided to expand to the U.S. Virgin Islands. “A lot of our customers cruise the Caribbean and come and spend time in resorts here as well,” says Kris. “Having lived on St. Thomas before and its being part of the U.S. led to my decision to open a store here. Plus, I wanted to be part of rebuilding of the USVI after last year’s two cat 5 hurricanes.” As Katy Perry says, “After a hurricane comes a rainbow!” Kris’ journey started in India. From there he went to Aruba as a salesman and learned the trade. He found he enjoyed interacting with people and building a personal rapport and trust. Thus, the Jewels By Kris dream was born and he started saving for a store where he could deliver unique pieces with exceptional service. After several years in Aruba, Curacao, St. Thomas and Alaska and completing the GIA course in Manhattan, gateway to the U.S. jewelry trade, Kris opened his store in Juneau, Alaska. “I love the personal connection we create with our customers,” Kris notes. “It’s not about sales and how much money you spend. Rather it’s about building an ongoing relationship so that you have your own personal jeweler whom you trust.” In addition to his array of store pieces, Jewels By Kris also carries brands that distinguish it from others – Shinola, Fendi, Ball, LeVian and Orocal Kris is also a father, husband and Christian. “My wife and I have 3-yearold triplets – two boys and a girl – as well as a 2-year-old daughter. So, we are small yet large! We are a faith-based family and company who puts God first.”

At an impressive height of 1,500 feet above sea level, Mountain Top offers a spectacular panoramic view of both the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, a total of 20 islands in all. In fact, National Geographic has rated this view of Magens Bay as one of the 10 best views in the world. It features a huge shopping area for browsing and a bar that is home of the world-famous banana daiquiri. Truly breathtaking!

The seas of the Virgin Islands are some of the best boating waters in the world. Whether you want to spend the day under sail or on a zooming powerboat, boat charters offer fun days that usually include food, drinks and snorkeling. Most charters leave from the East End/Red Hook area or from area resorts. If you want to see the reefs, wrecks and underwater marine life, several dive boat operations will show you the best St. Thomas has to offer. Sportfishing is another way to spend the day on a boat while trying to haul in a big marlin, tuna or wahoo.

SEA St. Thomas Beaches

1. BREWER’S BAY

You will find it just past the Univeristy of the Virgin Islands going west on Route 30. Brewer’s Bay is a local family favorite for weekend picnics and gatherings. Visitors can relax in the shallow waters or sunbathe on the wide shore. On weekends there tends to be a lot of activity and loud local music! (#1 on map)

7. SAPPHIRE BEACH

Named after the famous aviator who landed nearby in 1928, this tranquil bay is flanked by three hotels, palm trees and sea grapes that line the shore. Located on the airport road. (#4 on map)

The sapphire-blue waters here are great for snorkeling, windsurfing, jet skiing and more. The beach is located on the east end at Sapphire Beach Resort. (#7 on map)

8. SECRET HARBOUR BEACH 5. LINDQUIST BEACH One of St. Thomas’s most virginal and pristine beach, Lindquist Beach is situated on the east end of the island. The water is crystal-clear and typically calm. The left side of the beach is great for snorkeling. Owned by the Virgin Islands government it is well maintained and kept clean. There are a few picnic tables but get there early! (#5 on map)

2. COKI BEACH Located on Coki Point right before Coral World Ocean Park, this white sand beach with crystal clear water offers excellent snorkeling and diving. Beachside restaurants serve picnic fare including burgers, sandwiches and some local dishes. There is a dive shop, jet ski rental and several vendors renting snorkel gear, beach chairs and floats. 6. MAGENS BAY This beautiful one-mile stretch of beach is St. Thomas’ favorite and famous beach and is a public park. The water is usually very calm in this heart-shaped protected bay. Beach chairs and floats are available for rent and burgers, pizzas and other snacks can be found at the snack bar. Picnic tables located all along the beach. Lifeguards are on duty. (#6 on map)

3. HULL BAY A favorite northside beach for local families and surfers. It offers the best surfing on St. Thomas when there is a north swell but the locals are very protective so be aware. Hull Bay Hideaway restaurant and bar is located just behind the beach. Located n the northside. Plenty of parking. (#3 on map)

4. LINDBERGH BAY

A calm, quiet beach located at Secret Harbour Beach Resort, this beach has a floating swim platform and beach chairs available for rent. There is a dive company right on the beach. Also a restaurant and bar. (#8 on map)

9. LIMETREE BEACH There is often a bit of gentle surf on this beach. It is a bit rocky as you enter the water so tread carefully. Limetree is usually very quiet with not too many people around. (#9 on map)

10. VESSUP BEACH

A local favorite on the weekends for parties with loud music. Good time to go is during the week when it is very empty and peaceful. There is a watersports hut there that rents out sailboats, SUPs (Stand Up Paddle Boards), windsurfers and other fun water toys. The long stretch of beach is great for taking a leisurely stroll and the water is nice for swimming. (#10 on map)

This is a very natural beach...no ammenities, bars or restaurants. The Dorothea condominiums are located there in the flat area behind the beach. SEA A Day Underwater

Local marine life beckons divers of all levels Diving in waters around St. Thomas and St. John is easy and accessible and offers a broad range of dive sites. More than 500 species of fish, 40 types of coral and hundreds of invertebrates inhabit USVI waters. Vibrant blue tang, silvery horse-eye jacks, queen triggerfish, spiny Caribbean lobster, spotted eagle rays, Creole wrasses, and cleaner gobies are just a sampling of the marine life populating the underwater terrain. At dusk you may even encounter an octopus, sea horses or moray eels. Hawksbill, green, and leatherback turtles are also spotted frequently here. Most dive operators teach a full range of PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) courses from beginner scuba to instructor training. Specialty courses, such as, underwater photography, peak buoyancy, wreck, drift and boat diving are also

available through many operators. The islands are surrounded by some of the Caribbean’s healthiest reefs. Plus there’s more than a dozen shipwrecks. Some favorite dive sites include Cow & Calf, Wit Shoal II, Navy Barges, Tunnels of Thatch, Coki Beach, Carvel Rock, Eagle Shoals and Tecktite. The average water temperature is around 82° F (29° C) in the summer and 80° F (26° C) in the winter. Most divers are comfortable in shorty-style wetsuits year-round. Visibility ranges from 60-100 feet, but it can occasionally be higher or lower depending on weather conditions. A recompression chamber is available on St. Thomas in case of dive emergencies. And because the U.S. Virgin Islands is a territory of the United States, you’ll enjoy the added safety of diving within U.S. waters. This means that all dive boats are inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard and captains are USCG-certified.

While you’re here, be sure to carve out time to visit our several retail hubs on island, lined with merchants offering the finest of jewelry – since that’s our trademark – as well as stylish fashion, home décor, island art, souvenirs and more.

Coined “the flagship jeweler of the Virgin Islands” since it’s been around since 1954, Cardow Jewelers is a favorite with visitors and locals alike. When you walk into Trident Jewels & Time, you find yourself in the midst of exquisite jewelry and watches, most notably Ulysse Nardin.

George at House of Rajah is a favorite with visitors having been on St. Thomas for more than 45 years. Not only does he have whatever you desire, he loves to talk about his favorite things to see and do on the island. You’ll find him just steps off Main Street on Raadets Gade.

Another recently combined store brings together two legacy jewelry stores into a merged family operation at Dynasty Dazzlers where “Uncle Charlie’s” Imperial Jewelers has moved across Main Street. And while there are many familiar faces and brands downtown, there is also a stylish new boutique Jewels by Kris. While his St. Thomas store is new, Kris is an experienced and GIA credentialed jeweler with a store in Alaska as well. Downtown Charlotte Amalie is one of the most famous shopping districts in the Caribbean. So, don’t miss the chance to stroll Main Street that’s steeped in history and elegance.

A particularly “charming” shopping experience can be found just steps from Main Street on Garden Street. Sandal Man Sunil Mohanani’s Get Charmed Factory Outlet offers the famous flipflop you can wear around your neck plus “a multitude of fanciful pendants” and charms.

But there are other shopping districts that should not be missed. Yacht Haven Grande, where luxury yachts moor and dock, offers upscale shops as well as dining along the harbor waterfront.

Another hidden treasure is The Pearl Lady next to Fort Christian with a full selection of pearls ranging from Japanese Akoya and South Seas to Tahitian and Freshwater Cultured varieties.

With a bustling cruise ship presence, both shopping centers near the St. Thomas docks offer robust shopping for a broad array of merchandise. Havensight Mall has a bright new look and welcoming merchants. Crown Bay Center too boasts some of the name retailers you see downtown as well as some only found there. American Yacht Harbor and Red Hook boast some cool little boutiques as well.

And for a vast variety of brand boutiques, Little Switzerland boasts multiple locations Downtown, at Havensight Mall and Crown Bay Center. They woke to find the flag of Denmark planted on St. Thomas, the French Tricolor on St. Croix and the Union Jack flapping over Tortola (where it still flies). The Arawak Indian population had disappeared. Denmark later claimed St. John, bought St. Croix and built the Danish West Indies into thriving sugar cane and trading islands. Slaves were imported early to work the growing number of sugar plantations. The islands were also used as a base for re-shipment of slaves to other areas. After the Danish abolished slavery in

99 Steps 1848, planters began to abandon their estates and the population and economy dwindled. Threatened by German expansion during World War I, the U.S. bought the Danish West Indies (now the American Virgin Islands) on March 31, 1917. Even then the islands were expensive real estate – almost $300 an acre. In 1927, residents were granted U.S. citizenship. Until 1931, the islands were administered by the U.S. Navy. Then they were placed under the Department of the Interior with a Governor appointed by the President. A locally elected legislature (15 members from all three islands) has operated since 1852 but it wasn’t until 1970 that islanders could vote for their own Governor, and in 1972 a delegate to the U.S Congress. Though U.S. citizens, Virgin Island residents have no vote in national elections. Nor does the Virgin Islands' representative in Washington have a vote on the floor of the house.

1 LEGISLATURE BUILDING Originally a barracks for Danish troops, dating back to 1874. 2 FORT CHRISTIAN This National Historic Landmark was completed by Danish settlers in 1680. The building was constructed by the Danish Colonial Council between the years 1865 & 1867. 8 99 STEPS One of several ‘step-streets’ built by the Danes to solve the problem of getting around the town’s hilly terrain. The bricks were brought from Denmark as ballasts in the holds of trade ships. Walk to the top (actually 103 steps) and you will find yourself near the foot of more stairs leading to Blackbeard’s Castle.

The salons and chambers are furnished with period antiques. 10 BLACKBEARD’S CASTLE Also located just above 99 steps is this Danish watch tower built in the late 1600’s. It’s a Carnival 2019 Affa

REVELRY, RICH HISTORY AND ROYALTY REIGN DURING CARNIVAL By Charlotte Atkins, Publisher When it comes to the annual Virgin Islands Carnival, our island kingdom is filled with royalty. There are past Kings and Queens. Princes and Princesses. And more to come! And then there is “Lord Blakie,” the longtime chairman of the Virgin Islands Carnival. He, Kenneth Blake, is a prime example of how young islanders get involved in Carnival and it becomes a lifelong passion. He was involved in Carnival from a young age in the Zulu Troupe. “Since then, I have been involved in various roles as a participant until I started singing calypso as a teenager. I became the reigning Calypso Monarch 17 times,” said Blake. He stopped singing calypso to volunteer his services to the Virgin Islands Carnival Committee (VICC) when the Calypso chairperson’s position became available in the 1980s. “I decided to accept the volunteer position because I wanted to enhance the Calypso show.” That he did. As the Calypso chairperson, Blake was instrumental in getting the prize monies increased from $200 to $5,000 for the winner. Then in 1992, he was elected chairman of the Carnival Committee, a position he still holds to this day. The first local Carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation and lapsed during World War I. But it was revived in the early 1950s and Carnival on St. Thomas has become the second largest festival in the Caribbean. “The rebirth of Carnival started in September 1952 when Ron Delugo was reminiscing about the troupes, like Indians, Zulus, etc. and how they used to tramp from house to house during holidays. Since he was a radio personality, he sent out a call via the airwaves to ‘have a Carnival.’ Thereafter, he began looking for volunteers to form a committee to put on a Carnival.” Carnival has continued as an annual event ever since. Over the years additional elements have been added to make Carnival more successful. It is now a four-week celebration taking place in April each year. The theme for 2019 Carnival is “Culture, Fun, and Flair! It’s a Carnival 2019 Affair!” The theme idea was submitted by Markia Meyers. “This year we are trying to change things for the carnival season. We are keeping what has worked for us while trying to do some new things to continue to improve our product. My goal is to keep our culture thriving by encouraging the highest level of participation possible including that of our youngsters,” Page 40 — M A R C H / A P R I L 2 0 1 9

said Blake. “For this year’s season I hope to encourage more businesses to get involved in the parade as well as sponsorship. Efforts are being made to make the venue more feasible to the public. We also want to encourage the youths to be innovative and showcase their artistic skills this Carnival. This will be an opportunity for them to highlight their creative skills and provide the uniqueness of our traditional cultural heritage.” While Carnival is a great way for visitors to learn about local food, music and culture, for local residents it is a time of revelry and stress relief from work and daily life. Last year’s event was especially healing and needed after our islands endured backto-back cat 5 hurricanes two weeks apart in the fall of 2017. You could sense the collective community exhale at last year’s Carnival. In addition to being a time for the community to celebrate and share the island’s history and culture, it’s the single largest annual tourist attraction in the U.S. Territory, said Blake. “Carnival is a boost to our economy. Carnival is a vital part of our tourism product. Festivals attract visitors and visitors spend money. Gas stations, hotels, car rental agencies, restaurants, etc. jump in sales during Carnival,” he said. Carnival is made up of so many different types of celebrations that exude the Virgin Island spirit. But Blakes believes the most important component is “the small constructed village which entices visitors with some of the island’s best cuisine and the bands playing music. The Carnival Village is really a ‘party central.’ It is where revelers meet and greet, hang out until J’ouvert starts.” That’s why thousands of visitors from the mainland United States, Caribbean islands and other international destinations gather in Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas, for the island’s largest event -- the Virgin Islands Carnival. And visitors and locals alike have a sea of VICC volunteers to thank for the month-long party that enlivens St. Thomas and its streets and fills them with the smells and tastes of island dishes, the sounds of island music, regal pageantry with impressive young people, and colorful costumes, enthusiastic troupes and dynamic floats that put our island culture and spirit on parade. And that’s why “Lord Blakie” still has such zest for his beloved Virgin Islands Carnival. “The passion I have for my culture is largely influenced by the love for calypso music, the food, and most of all the joy that Carnival brings to the island, its people and visitors.”

For visitors to America’s Paradise, your time here is usually an ongoing celebration, whether it’s for a day or a week or more as you revel in the tropical beauty of our islands, taking a break from work and daily life and embracing our laid back but festive vibe. That vibe gets cranked way up during Carnival, the grandest annual events in the U.S. Virgin Islands! Each of the three islands play host to its own Carnival. On St. Thomas it’s called Virgin Islands Carnival each spring. On St. John, it’s the St. John Festival every summer and on St. Croix, it’s the Crucian Christmas Festival in December. While similar, each event boasts its own special flavor. The St. Thomas Carnival is usually in high gear by late April. This year’s date for the 2019 event is April 1 through May 4. Each year has its own theme, selected from submissions from the local citizenry. The 2019 theme is “Culture, Fun, and Flair! It’s a Carnival 2019 Affair!! For visitors, it helps to understand the spirit of our springtime revelry, the events and why this annual spring celebration is so important to our local community.

How it Started

The first carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation and lapsed during World War I. But it was revived in 1952 and Carnival on St. Thomas has become the second largest festival in the Caribbean. (See related story on Page 40) Carnival events include a calypso competition, culture and food fair showcasing the island’s best traditional eats and a multinight village boasting food, drink and entertainment galore. Then the party really revs up with j'ouvert (a morning jump up) followed by the children's and adult’s parades with brilliantly costumed and decorated troupes and floats.

Calypso

The Calypso competition is an entertaining and amusing part of Carnival. It is an elimination and finals contest that crowns the top performers. Calypso is a kind of West Indian (originally Trinidadian) music in syncopated African rhythm, typically with words improvised on a topical theme. Calypsonians compete, offering witty and satirical commentary on the state of the islands, oftentimes mocking the shenanigans of politicians. In this St. Thomas tradition, participants vie for the title of Calypso Monarch. At this event you can expect to experience the clever approach in which the competitors deliver their socially important and personally crafted lyrics, expressing their take on daily life and experiences on the island. Dazzling pageants and talent shows are held to choose royalty to reign over the festival and to maintain those titles in their personal legacies. Looking back over the historical list of Carnival Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses is sometimes like a Who’s Who of the Virgin Islands. It is obvious that those tapped as festival royalty and who represent their island have something special and often grow into island leaders and influencers. So be sure to grab a copy of the official 2019 Carnival magazine and read about the impressive young people in this year’s royal court.

Carnival Village

Nightly for 10 days, the parking lot area next to Fort Christian on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront is a highlight of Carnival – The Village. It’s where you’ll find decorated booths with lively teams and food vendors with tantalizing and tasty food and drink as well as nightly live musical entertainment, carnival rides for the kids and more. But most of all, The Village is where revelry and reunions happen every year. Old friends cross paths. Visitors get to socialize with locals and learn about island culture and hospitality. The Village is where people congregate to laugh, talk and revel in the true joy of Carnival.

Culture in the Spotlight

Wednesdays during Carnival are to showcase island culture. Culture Night at the Lionel Roberts Stadium does just that, serving as a reminder to all generations of the collective island roots and ways that endure and continue to be taught and shared. The daylong Cultural Fair is a showcase for island dishes and delicacies, artisan creations, market vendors, music, performances and more at Emancipation Garden in Downtown St. Thomas.

J’ouvert

While Carnival starts earlier in the month with calypso events, pageants and local food and culture, the party truly gets starts with J’ouvert on the final Thursday of the festival. It’s the kickoff event for the finale weekend. People start partying at the Village the night before and some just keep on going through the night. In the wee hours, Carnival revelers party, dance and celebrate. And even before the sun is starting to rise, troupes – some organized and costumed, others less so – start a procession along the waterfront, dancing through the street at the break of dawn. It is quite a spectacle. With loud music thumping and bumping from trucks and loud speakers, revelers dance and prance along, regularly being sprayed with paint and water along the way.

J’ouvert is not for the faint of heart and visitors need to know that before venturing out to view or participate. Troupes have coordinated themes and costumes. Others are free form. Many are risqué and revealing and the antics in the streets range from amusing to bawdy, but always are about fun and revelry. That’s the true spirit of J’ouvert – welcoming the day in a mass of humanity so ready to play and party and celebrate our beloved Virgin Islands. The streets are lined with vendors selling food, drink and souvenirs. If you’re visiting and want to view the spectacle that is J’ouvert, your best bet is to go downtown along the waterfront to watch the last leg of the procession at sunrise. It’s slow-moving so you will get to see plenty. Then you can stroll around downtown and grab a bite and do a bit of shopping. This all-nighter certainly gets the Carnival party started for real!

Then come the amazing parades …

Children’s Parade

Carnival wouldn’t be Carnival without kids. And they get started early here. There are tons of toddlers in festive togs, youngsters prancing and twirling batons and dancing teens in brightly colored and festive costumes. Schools and bands and steel drummers and mascots, princes and princesses and more make up the Children’s Parade. The streets of Downtown are lined all day long for the procession filled with bright young faces that will continue the legacy of the Virgin Island spirit and Carnival for a long time to come.

Adult Parade

What a beautiful extravaganza the Carnival Parade is here on St. Thomas! It is so worthy of being the finale to wrap up the month of celebrating local culture. Colorfully decorated floats, dramatic and dazzling troupes, musical performances and dignitaries move through Downtown in this daylong event. Troupe members adorned in feathers and glitter sporting bejeweled and sequined costumes move to the beat of nonstop music.

It is revelry at its highest and a visual you’ll never forget!

Whether renting a vehicle or simply crossing a street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI always flows from the left-hand side of the road. Speed limits are 35 MPH in the country and 20 MPH in town, unless otherwise posted. The first thing to remember is that you drive on the left-hand side of the road; the second is that it’s hard to get lost for long. This narrow emerald dot on the world map is only thirteen miles long and no point on the island is more than thirty minutes (traffic permitting) from Charlotte Amalie, the

main town, which climbs picturesquely up the hills of the main harbor midway on the island’s south shore. Black and white signs are spotted along the country roads indicating route number and direction in which you are going. Our road map is keyed to these routes and also to the road names.

SEA St. John Beaches

You have got to do St. John! You hear that from everyone who has visited the island and from those who live here... 1. Trunk Bay The most popular beach on St. John is undoubtedly Trunk Bay. It is known for its 650 feet of underwater snorkeling trail that includes identification signs on the bottom of the sea, describing the coral formations and fish that inhabit the waters. It’s educational and a fun way to spend the day. The beach is part of the National Park and it is the only beach with an admission fee ($5). 2. Hawksnest One of St. John’s most convenient beaches, Hawksnest Beach offers picnic tables and barbecue grills. There is also plenty of parking. A great snorkeling reef starts close to shore. 3. Cinnamon Bay One of the longest beaches in St. John’s National Park is Cinnamon Bay, it is about a mile long. There is good snorkeling to the right side of the beach, if you don’t mind the swim. Or check out the nature trail across from the campground that winds through plantation ruins and a wild cinnamon forest of bay rum trees.

4. Salomon Bay Another favorite with the locals because it is accessible only by trail, either from Caneel Bay or along the Lind Point Trail out of Cruz Bay (about a mile walk, not challenging) and thus is mostly deserted. A perfect place for a relaxing day on the beach. 5. Honeymoon Beach Honeymoon Beach is a pretty beach with sandy shoreline surrounded by sea grape and coconut trees. It offers great snorkeling, swimming and lounging. You can access the Honeymoon Beach via the Lind Point Trail which starts just behind the Virgin Islands National Park Visitor Center in Cruz Bay and connects to Caneel Bay Resort.

6. Caneel Bay Caneel Bay Beach can be hiked to from Cruz Bay along the Lind Point Trail. It is the ultimate white sand beach. The water is usually very calm and shallow, perfect for a day of swimming and sunning. This beach and bay have become a popular gathering spot for boaters since the resort is closed.

SEA St. John Beaches

But, what does it mean to do St. John? Well, there are the wonderful hiking trails that meander through the island that can take you from the "bustling" town of Cruz Bay to secluded beaches and pristine Caribbean forests. But St. John beaches are a must! 7. Francis Bay Francis Bay is one of St. John’s longest beaches. Long white sand beach with calm, clear water protected from the easterly winds. The Francis Bay Trail runs along a salt pond and offers great bird watching. There is good snorkeling for beginners on the west end, towards Maho Bay. For experienced snorkelers go to the rocky section at the other end of the beach. 8. Maho Bay Maho Bay is great for children. The water is shallow and protected. Look carefully in the sand while snorkeling; you might see a stingray, just look for the outline in the sand.

9. Great Cruz Bay This is the beach of the Westin Resort. So it is well kept and lined with beautiful palm trees. Great Cruz Bay is a great beach for kids and families. The water is calm with a mostly sandy bottom with some seagrass patches. Beach chairs, umbrellas and watersports rentals are available. 10. Scott Beach This deserted beach at the Caneel Bay Resort property is accessible only by water, but is teeming with sea turtles, spotted eagle rays and starfish. Kayaking is a great way to explore this area.

DRIVING

As you will undoubtedly notice upon your arrival, we drive on the left side of the road here. So if you are renting a vehicle and driving around St. Thomas and St. John, just be extra mindful on our narrow winding roads, be cautious, be courteous and don’t be in a hurry.

STREET SMARTS Visitors should exercise the same safety precautions used when traveling anywhere else in the world. Lock your hotel door or car when you exit. Don’t answer the door in a hotel without verifying whom it is. Place all valuables in the hotel’s safe deposit box. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly after dark, and stay in well-lighted areas.
