Hope & Recovery

Islands survive category 5 hurricanes Irma and Maria and are coming back VI Strong! Locals plus celebrities step up to rebuild and mainlanders help with relief and recovery.

Hope & Recovery After two Cat 5 Hurricanes, islands will come back – VI Strong By Charlotte Atkins Publisher The U.S. Virgin Islands have endured an historic weather phenomenon – a one-two punch from back-to-back Category 5 hurricanes Irma and Maria. Irma is said to be the most power hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean basin and experts have said it’s one of the most damaging hurricanes to ever roar through the Caribbean. And roar it did as it came across our islands on Sept. 6, 2017, with the eye passing right over the USVI. During the peak hours of the storm, sustained winds of 185 mph – with gusts up to 220 mph, according to some reports – raged across our beautiful tropical landscape downing trees and power poles, Page 2  N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7 Page 2  N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7

ripping off roofs, crumbling walls of businesses and homes and dumping monsoon-like rain. Boats, even in what had been historically safe havens, were tossed around and either sank, broke apart or were heaved onto the shore. We all awoke to destruction and devastation on a grand scale. Our world was instantly changed. Still the Virgin Islander spirit instantly rose up and cries of “We have survived” and “We will rebuild” sounded. But before we could even exhale, more trouble was brewing in the Atlantic and Maria was heading our way, another monstrous Cat 5. Two weeks after Irma, on Sept. 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria blew through the USVI. Our sister island St. Croix did not receive as direct a hit with Irma, but was

closer to Maria’s strongest winds and suffered greater damage while St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island endured more battering winds and the unending downpour of the outer bands. Irma came in the middle of the day while Maria’s drowning force came in the dark of night. The hurricanes stripped us of electricity island wide. Major hotels and resorts were pummeled and some won’t be open for the season ahead. Many businesses remain close. And people have left the islands. But most of us remain. Many of our businesses are open. Power is being restored. And as you move through our islands more than 12 weeks later, you see smiling people chatting, gathered in bars and restaurants, sitting under the trees that remain www.virginislandsthisweek.com www.virginislandsthisweek.com

tion are under way. All with the goal of building back better.

FEMA workers, line crews from the mainland, insurance adjusters and numerous others are on island to help us with our restoration. To you, we say thank you for coming to help.

Of course, while there’s much help on island and more still coming, Virgin Islanders have taken much into their own hands when it comes to relief and helping one another.

Leaders in Washington sent help fairly quickly and promise that aid and recovery assistance will be significant. Time will tell. Celebrities are lending their names and fame to send supplies and help rebuild. Local leadership is focused on getting power and infrastructure restored and getting visitors back to sustain our tourism-dependent economy.

A chorus of “VI Strong” has been reverberating through the islands ever since the winds subsided. A “can-do” spirit and “heal thyself” mantra has emerged. Unprecedented circumstances like this require change and patience and most certainly innovation and collaboration.

And tourists are coming back. Cruise ships returned in early November. And while some of the hotels might not open for a while, plans for rebuilding and renovawww.virginislandsthisweek.com www.virginislandsthisweek.com

glossy version. Our mission is to tout what makes St. Thomas and St. John special. We will continue to do so and we will be shifting to a more locally focused celebration of our islands in 2018. Our magazine will shine the light on what we have to offer visitors, but it will also spotlight our unity, our resilience, our kindness, our natural beauty and serve to remind us all how special this place and its people are. As we dig into our restoration and recovery, we believe hard work is key but that hope is necessary. So, with this keepsake edition, we commemorate our surviving the winds and rains of Irma and Maria and their aftermath. And we celebrate the strength and hopeful synergy that will not only restore our home and destination, but also take us to a place that’s better and more inviting than ever before. And we will do it together! N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7   Page 3 N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7   Page 3

WELCOME

LETTER from the Governor OF THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS

Welcome to the U.S. Virgin Islands! We are so happy to have you here. Whether you are visiting for leisure, business or to help our communities recover from the storms, we thank you and hope you will take advantage of all our islands have to offer. The past year was a period of highs and lows for the U.S. Virgin Islands. The year began with a commemoration of our unique history, when in March we reached our Centennial, 100 years since the official transfer of these islands from Denmark to the United States. September brought with it two major tests of our resolve - back-toback Category 5 hurricanes that struck our Territory in a 12-day span. Some residents lost their entire homes, others lost roofs; our main hospitals were severely damaged, as were many of our schools. Our islands lost power, water and significant infrastructure, but despite all of that, our people have remained steadfastly resilient and committed to rebuilding our islands even stronger than before. You’ll probably notice we are still recovering, but you’ll also notice how determined Virgin Islanders are to get back to normal life and open our doors again to visitors. Together with the Federal Government, our local government agencies and partners have worked night and day to prepare for your visit. You will find your accommodations provider ready to welcome you with open arms and you will see many of our attractions, restaurants, shops and activities are back up and running. During your visit, please take the time to get to know our islands’ diverse history and culture with a visit to a historical site on St. John, a walking tour in downtown St. Thomas, or a trip to St. Croix, just an 18-minute seaplane ride away, where the many beautiful landmarks and museums preserve our rich traditions. Thank you for choosing our islands for this trip - visiting us is one of the best ways you can help our economy recover. I hope you enjoy your stay with us, and trust you will have a wonderful Virgin Islands experience. Sincerely, Kenneth Mapp Governor

LETTER from the Acting Commissioner USVI DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM

Welcome to the United States Virgin Islands. The beauty and charm of St. Croix, St, John and St. Thomas are only surpassed by the strength and resilience of the people of the Virgin Islands. We are extremely grateful for all visitors who choose to grace our shores during this ongoing restoration period. Although Mother Nature severely impacted our destination, we are recovering and rebuilding stronger than ever before. We are ecstatic to report that the USVI is still nice. Our lush islands offer visitors a multitude of heartwarming and delightful cultural experiences, scenic vistas, breathtaking beaches and an abundance of fun-filled land and sea activities. Please keep in mind, that some areas many not be as untouched as others, but we are working to make our destination welcoming for everyone. St. Croix’s historic twin cities, Christiansted and Frederiksted, continue to offer an exceptional culinary experience which has been enhanced and infused by the seven countries who settled the island. St. John’s natural and romantic charm still welcomes visitors who visit their pristine sandy beaches offering an invigorating water escapade. St. Thomas’ historic town of Charlotte Amalie reveals the capital’s rich history, exceptional shopping and breathtaking scenery, which includes Fort Christian - the oldest Danish fort in the Territory. The alluring charm of each island makes the USVI a premier destination. We continue to encourage guests to visit all three islands and discover which island’s natural rhythm feels like a home away from home. As our islands recover, we encourage all visitors to share their wonderful on-island experiences with their friends and family and plan a return trip to the destination to see how the islands have improved and transformed. Hope & Recovery

Celebrities Lend Hand with Relief and Recovery Tim Duncan, Kenny Chesney, Michael Bloomberg and others deliver hope and help While there is concern that Virgin Islanders are sometimes “forgotten Americans” and that relief efforts may wane, some major celebrities with connections to the U.S. Virgin Islands are making sure that relief will be ongoing and that the light continues to shine on our plight. At the forefront is NBA and local legend Tim Duncan, who hails from St. Croix and survived Hurricane Hugo in 1989. That category 4 hurricane hit “with a fury that changed my life forever,” Duncan wrote in an op-ed piece for the Washington Post and republished here in the Virgin Islands Daily News. As a hurricane survivor himself, the retired five-time NBA champion knows firsthand the challenges that come in the wake of such fierce storms as Irma and Maria. “I was 13 years old when Hurricane Hugo ripped through my home town in the Virgin Islands, and had my life and community forever changed,” Duncan wrote on his YouCaring page. “I know exactly what kind of devastation a hurricane of this magnitude can cause and want to do all I can to aid in the relief efforts for the islanders.”

Mike Bloomberg joined Gov. Kenneth Mapp and Tim Duncan in the U.S. Virgin Islands to assess damages and support the community’s recovery efforts. www.michaelbloomberg.com

He chose to “build a team, get in the game and define the disasters by the breadth and unity of our response.” He’s not one to seek the spotlight, but is committed to staying on the forefront in helping his fellow Virgin Islanders. You can follow his relief efforts on Twitter @ DuncanRelief Joining Duncan on that initial trip and in continuing relief efforts was Michael Bloomberg, billionaire and former New York City mayor. He joined that first trip because his company co-founder Tom Secunda, who has a home on St. John, told him of the catastrophic damage. Kenny Chesney is showing his love for Love City. www.kennychesney.com

So, he created the 21 U.S. Virgin Islands Relief Fund – 21usvihurricanehelp.com – that has raised more than $3 million. He came to St. Thomas in October with four cargo planes filled with medical supplies, generators and food and distributed enough in 24 hours to help close to 7,000 people. He returned home to St. Croix in November with two more huge cargo planes filled with food to feed more than 10,000.

That initial emergency aid mission has now grown into ongoing recovery assistance as Bloomberg has embedded a team in the USVI to provide not only medical supplies and help and other recovery resources, but also to serve as an advisory team on FEMA, power and other infrastructure and financial matters. He also started a recovery fund – usvirecovery.org – that has raised more than $7 million. Of course, country singer Kenny Chesney is a beloved name and presence on the islands since he has a home on St.

John and has been spending time here for some 15 years. His home sheltered 20 people and their pets during Irma. And while they survived, his home did not. In a message on his website kennychesney.com, Chesney shared, “I don’t know what to say. I’ve never been in war, but the devastation, the people’s faces in a place I know by heart have left me feeling helpless. It’s total devastation.” To help, he created the Love for Love City Foundation – loveforlovecity.org. He says his mission was created “to channel the right kind of relief to the people who truly need the help. We are partnering with local charities, with a focus on St. John, to identify needs, create transport for materials, make sure help goes where it’s crucial – and to ensure the resources get to the people rebuilding.” Planeloads of food, water, tools, tarps, generators, medical supplies, and clothing have already been delivered. Chesney says he recognizes that recovery is ongoing. “Not just weeks or months, but years are going to be required to restore the island. Love for Love City is about the sustained effort to support St. John and the entire Virgin Islands.”

Chesney and his No Shoes Nation are the heart of his relief efforts, but he’s also working with local and national groups and has enlisted fellow musicians. He has recorded music and has merchandise on this website to help with relief fundraising. Notable TV journalists have also been on island to keep the spotlight on our recovery. Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts visited St. Thomas for a feature on a program called Adopt A Family USVI. Today Show stalwart and America’s favorite weatherman Al Roker came to St. John recently as part of his Lend a Hand tour where he visited hurricane-ravaged St. John, Puerto Rico, Houston and Key West. His hurricane relief fund has raised more than $1.2 million. His focus here in the USVI was to deliver a portable X-ray machine to St. John since injured residents there had been having to get x-rayed on a machine at a local veterinarian office since the island’s medical clinic was damaged. The renowned meteorologist marveled in an interview with Patch about what the U.S. Virgin Islands has endured.

"Nature's power is really one of those things that you think you're prepared for and then you realize you're not,” he said. “You can be as prepared as you want to be, but when you get two Category 5

storms battering you, there's really nothing you can do." Our united hope is that with the likes of Duncan, Chesney and Bloomberg and others, we will not be forgotten and sustained help is at hand. In an interview with Robin Meade on HLN just days after Irma, Chesney said, “These communities are facing an uphill battle. And they’re facing years of cleanup. So many people are displaced. And, yes, we will rebuild, and we will recover. And the people I know there, and the people I’ve grown to love, they’re really hard workers. And they’ve got great hearts, and it’s hard to rock them even with a hurricane of this size. That’s the thing I’m most proud of is my island family has a lot of heart, we’re going to recover … but it’s going to take a lot of help.” N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7   Page 11

HOTEL Update

Hurricanes Hit Major Hotels Hard, But New Season Brings Opportunities In September, the U.S. Virgin Islands was hit by two Category 5 hurricanes in two weeks. Although we lost homes, businesses and infrastructure, we did not lose hope. The USVI Hotel and Tourism Association was honored to support our members in the wake of the devastation, and we continue to offer resources and assistance as we face a future that becomes more certain by the day. As we enter the 2017-2018 winter tourism season, there are a myriad of opportunities for timeshares, medium and small hotels, and the marine and cruise ship industries. The first quarter of 2018 will bring numerous opportunities for the timeshare industry. Timeshares planning to open during the first quarter represent several internationally renowned brands, which attract a variety of guests to the territory each year. Likewise, small and medium properties, many of which are already operational, have a similar occasion to show off their tailored experiences for guests. Properties opening in 2017 include: Lindberg Bay Hotel and Villas, Mafolie Hotel, Island View Guesthouse, Windward Passage Hotel, Gallows Point Resort and most St. Croix accommodations (read on for properties not yet open). Properties projected to open in 2018 include: Emerald Beach Resort (Jan.), Marriott Frenchman's Cove (Feb.), Margaritaville Vacation Club, Wyndham (Feb.), The Ritz-Carlton Club, St. Thomas (Feb.), Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa (March), Bolongo Bay Beach Resort (June), The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas (Oct.) and The Westin St. John Resort and Villas (Oct.). Properties projected to be closed until 2019 include: Elysian Beach Resort (early 2019), Bluebeard’s Beach Club (early 2019), Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort, Sugar Bay Resort and Spa, Caneel Bay Resort, Flamboyan on the Bay Resort and Villas, and Divi Carina Bay Resort. Projections for the 2017-2018 winter tourism season show that a majority of the large resorts and hotels on St. Thomas and St. John will remain closed for renovations and repair. However, timeshares, medium and small properties, and most businesses on St. Thomas and St. John plan to be operational for the season. Additionally, nearly all properties and businesses on St. Croix are ready to welcome guests. Projections are progressing as scheduled as the Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands and its affiliates continue to work toward full power restoration. The closure of the largest properties in the territory at the same time is not ideal, but it presents opportunities for us to renovate and update the tourism product. And while the hotels focus on revealing a polished, new product, USVIHTA will continue to promote properties and members who came out of the storms with minimal damage. Many of our members are up and running, and ready to welcome guests today. While recovery continues, the territory is already welcoming visitors. Cruise ship visits have resumed. Water transit in the USVI and to the British Virgin Islands is operational. Airports have reopened to commercial traffic and continue to expand flight options. Overnight bookings are increasing as activities, attractions and restaurants resume normal business hours. Our centennial year may be coming to a close, but we are turning the page on a new chapter in our territory’s history – our renaissance. Sincerely, Lisa Hamilton USVIHTA President Page 12  N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7

resume on November shows the resilience of Virgin Islanders and Team WICO.” VIPA Executive Director David Mapp said in his late-November update that the Port Authority sustained $85 million in damage to its USVI port facilities. Despite the damage, most ports reopened shortly after both storms to enable emergency personal and supplies to come into the territory. He said rebuilding VIPA’s air and sea ports to ensure a safe and pleasant travel experience is now the foremost priority. Gov. Kenneth Mapp and tourism officials said early on that the key to making St. Thomas and the rest of the USVI inviting to cruise lines and passengers in the short-term was to have several main beaches cleaned up and open and to have an array of excursions and activities ready as well.

Returning Cruise Ships Anchor Recovery Expectations It was a red-letter day on Nov. 3 when the Seabourne Odyssey docked at the West Indian Company cruise dock in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. As cruise passengers strolled off the ship to the sound of steel drums, it signaled the return of tourists after category 5 hurricanes Irma and Maria hit in September just as the islands were prepping for a new season.

million cruise passengers visit the USVI each year. Officials say it’s too soon to know the full ship or passenger potential for the year ahead in wake of the hurricanes because circumstance are still so dynamic with cruise lines scheduling and rescheduling berths at local cruise docks. Still, things look promising.

Ever since, USVI government and tourism leaders as well as our business community have been racing to get St. Thomas ready to welcome cruise ships back in port both at WICO and at the Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal at Crown Bay on St. Thomas as well as the pier in Frederiksted on St. Croix.

November’s cruise ship schedule released by WICO and the Virgin Islands Port Authority saw 28 ships slated for local port calls. That’s more like what October’s monthly ship count usually totals and half of what was originally scheduled. But December is more robust with some 70 ships booked, which is higher than what was scheduled before the hurricanes.

"Welcoming cruise visitors back to the U.S. Virgin Islands is key to our economic recovery," U.S. Virgin Islands Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty said in a statement right after the hurricanes.

And two days before Thanksgiving, the world’s largest cruise ship Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas – that can hold more than 5,400 passengers – docked at Crown Bay, signaling that mega ships are returning.

With major resorts on St. Thomas and St. John decimated, the extended-stay portion of the economy has a long recovery ahead with many large hotels not reopening until late 2018 or 2019.

That’s because the cruise docks were a priority after the monstrous pair of hurricanes.

That makes cruise passengers all the more vital and valuable to local businesses and the economy. Cruise passenger numbers in the USVI peaked in 2014 at around 2 million. Even though those numbers have declined in the last few years, local businesses and the government count on having at least 1.5 Page 14  N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7

To that end, our famed Magens Bay and its beach was a priority and heroic official and community efforts got the beach and park ready for visitors and locals to enjoy. Joyce D. Griffin, acting commissioner for the Department of Tourism, said all concessions and amenities would be available at Magens Bay as of Dec. 7. By Thanksgiving, 17 designated beaches on St. Thomas and St. John met water quality standards measured by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. Shopping, of course, is always a key attraction on St. Thomas and St John. Havensight Mall fared well in the storm as did downtown Charlotte Amalie’s and Yacht Haven Grande. Crown Bay Center had some stores with damage, but was also ready to welcome cruise ships back in November. Even with widespread destruction on St. John, Mongoose Junction is open and ready for visitors and shoppers. With cleanup well underway and power being restored, true recovery means adding strategic vision. As part of the overall recovery, WICO’s Graham was appointed to chair the governor’s U.S. Virgin Islands Hurricane and Resiliency Advisory Group. Governor Mapp established the group to help guide reconstruction efforts and resiliency in the wake of Irma and Maria.

Fortunately, the WICO pier was largely undamaged by the hurricanes and officials moved quickly to have the dock and adjacent Havensight Mall back in business in short order.

While the group has overarching goals of assessing the hurricane damage and outlining risks the USVI may face in the next 30 years, a more urgent focus is to develop and implement an economic recovery plan, with a focus on tourism and related services.

“Hurricanes Irma and Maria have definitely changed life for many in the Virgin Islands,” said WICO President and CEO Clifford Graham. “But the storms will help us to rebuild our tourism product stronger and better than ever. The fact of us being able to have cruise traffic

But we all can do our part. Let’s remember when cruise passengers spill off ships and fill our restaurants, shops, tours, taxis, beaches, charters and more, that they are critical to our recovery. Let’s show them that the U.S. Virgin Islands is still nice!

History

of the Virgin Islands The U.S Territories (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the British Virgin Islands (to the north and east) are among the most beautiful geographical areas in the world, blessed with powdery beaches and sun drenched weather. The islands lie in the path of soft tradewinds blowing direct from Portugal. Which perhaps accounts for the fact that “Santa Cruz” was among the first islands to be sighted by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage westward. He then sailed northeast, passing St Thomas, St John and Tortola and called them collectively Las Virgenes.

The Danish abolished slavery

After his visit, the islands went back to sleep for more than a hundred and fifty years. They woke to find the flag of Denmark planted on St. Thomas, the French Tricolor on St. Croix and the Union Jack flapping over Tortola (where it still flies). The Arawak Indian population had disappeared. Denmark later claimed St. John, bought St. Croix and built the Danish West Indies into thriving sugar cane and trading islands. Slaves were imported early to work the growing number of sugar plantations. The islands were also used as a base for re-shipment of slaves to other areas.

99 Steps After the Danish abolished slavery in 1848, planters began to abandon their estates and the population and economy dwindled. Threatened by German expansion during World War I, the U.S. bought the Danish West Indies (now the American Virgin Islands) on March 31, 1917. Even then the islands were expensive real estate – almost $300 an acre. In 1927, residents were granted U.S. citizenship. Until 1931, the islands were administered by the U.S. Navy. Then they were placed under the Department of the Interior with a Governor appointed by the President. A locally elected legislature (15 members from all three islands) has operated since 1852 but it wasn’t until 1970 that islanders could vote for their own Governor, and in 1972 a delegate to the U.S Congress. Though U.S. citizens, Virgin Island residents have no vote in national elections. Nor does the Virgin Islands' representative in Washington have a vote on the floor of the house.

Magens Bay Beach Whether you are a visitor, relief worker or local resident, we can all use a day relaxing at the beach. While the U.S. Virgin Islands are blessed with numerous beautiful beaches, Magens Bay Beach is perhaps the most popular and famous. Noted as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches by both Condé Nast and National Geographic, it is a must see and do. There are lots of things to do besides swimming and sunbathing … like hiking the nature trail, kayaking or paddle boarding. After extensive cleanup and restoration, concessions and amenities were expected to be available by early December.

Duty Free Shopping

St. Thomas is widely known as the best shopping spot in the Caribbean and one of the 10 top shopping areas in the world! Many duty-free bargains can be found at prices that are below stateside with no sales tax making it worth your while to spend time perusing the shops in downtown Charlotte Amalie, Havensight Mall, Red Hook, Crown Bay Center or Yacht Haven Grande. The duty-free allowance is $1,600 per person including children. So a family of four can take back $6,400 worth of duty-free purchases.

Taste of the Tropics It goes without saying that the various collection of restaurants on St. Thomas are in a "best" category all by themselves. We recommend that you venture out to experience the wide variety of cuisines. From local kallaloo to authentic Italian dishes, fresh local fish and fungi to burgers, the variety is impressive. Restaurants have steadily been reopening since the hurricanes. Red Hook, Frenchtown, Havensight and Downtown all have wonderful eateries. Drake’s Seat One of the island’s best view points, Drake’s Seat affords a panoramic picture of Magens Bay and the United States and British Virgin Islands strung out to the east. A popular stop on round-the-island tours, this place can get crowded. If you visit in the late afternoon, the light is especially entrancing. Legend has it that British privateer Sir Francis Drake, commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I, is said to have used this spot to spy on enemy ships of the Spanish Fleet passing through what is now called Drake’s Passage. There is no admission charge.

Mountain Top At an impressive height of 1,500 feet above sea level, Mountain Top offers a spectacular panoramic view of both the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, a total of 20 islands in all. In fact, National Geographic has rated this view of Magens Bay as one of the 10 best views in the world. It features a casual shopping area for browsing and a bar that is home of the world-famous banana daiquiri. Truly breathtaking!

Day trip to St. Croix

Watersports!

Our sister island St. Croix is the “big island” of the USVI. It’s 22.7 miles long, and 8 miles wide at its widest. It too was hit by hurricanes Irma and Maria, but has managed to get back on its feet as a destination fairly quick. It boasts great diving and snorkeling, history galore, shopping, dining and more. Buck Island Reef National Monument and Christiansted National Historic site both reopened just before Thanksgiving. Of course, Cruzan and Captain Morgan offer rum tastings and tours. So jump on a plane or ferry for a visit. Locals will be reminded how each of our islands has its own distinct personality attributes and vibe, and visitors will love the diversity of landscape and culture – all with our shared Virgin Islands spirit!

ATTRACTIONS & Activities THINGS TO DO IN THE USVI

Coral World Open with Scaled Back Operations, But Remember It’s A Local Venue Opportunity Too Coral World Ocean Park has been a mainstay attraction on St. Thomas for some 40 years, having been founded by a company from Israel in 1978. The park was severely damaged during Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. A couple years later a group of investors took over the park and reopened it late 1998. Ever since, the park has grown in activity offerings such as Sea Trek, animal encounters and SNUBA. Now with the double whammy of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Coral World sustained damage to its facility both on land and under water. There was roof damage in the Marine Garden's Exhibit and the Blue Water Terrace. The aviary was damaged as well. Coral tables on the Sea Trek trail were overturned. According to Marketing Director Valerie Peters, many of the animals were released prior to Hurricane Irma's impact. “The sea turtles were moved to a pool on higher ground. The sea lions were secured in a building while under the supervision of their trainers and the birds were all brought in to shelter,” she said. “All faired extremely well.”

But it is important for local residents and businesses to remember that Coral World is a unique venue for events. Coral World is happy to announce that effective Dec. 14, the park is available for holiday parties, weddings and other social events and business meetings. For more information, please contact Valerie Peters at marketing@coralworldvi.com or call 340-344-8446 to check availability.

“After both storms, the amazing and dedicated team of Coral World employees spent 12 hours a day cleaning up and securing the property while maintaining the highest level of care for the animals remaining at the park. Some of the exhibits have already been enhanced, such as the turtle pools. Many staff members were displaced and the new Dolphin Education Building became home to many.” The team is gradually opening the park and facility as it works to restore what has been damaged. The park is currently accepting bookings only from cruise ship pre-booked tours, which includes a guided "Come Back" tour (in lieu of general admission). Activities include the sea lion swim and sea lion encounter, SNUBA and the turtle encounter. Page 20  N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7

“We anticipate operating on this scaled back model until the end of the year with the hopes of including the general public at a later date,” said Valerie. The operating hours for the park will correlate directly with cruise ship tour schedules for the next few weeks.

Coral World's overriding goal remains to educate and inspire appreciation and understanding of the local environment. Even as the park and its team members recover, they are looking to the future and are still moving forward with its new dolphin habitat to open late 2018 or early 2019. The team’s hope is that visitors, relief workers and local residents will come to Coral World Ocean Park to experience the joy of discovery and that you will love and want to protect the natural treasures you see there.

Captain Patrick drives box truck instead of boat on USVI relief pilgrimage By Charlotte Atkins

Publisher

It’s undeniable that anyone who was on St. Thomas or St. John for Hurricanes Irma or Maria will ever forget the experience. While many endured the wrath of both storms, some jumped off “the rock” after Irma to take a break or to take action and help with relief efforts by collecting and shipping supplies from the U.S. mainland.

Captain Patrick started in Boston and worked his way down the East Coast in a 26-foot truck. His stops included New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida.

Patrick Cena celebrates VI Strong.

Patrick Cena, captain of Privateer Charters, is a take action guy. He lives and works on the East End of St. Thomas and he was hunkered down in his Red Hook apartment for Irma. “It was very scary, especially during the four-hour peak of the storm. I was able to watch Red Hook Harbor, and witnessed many boats breaking loose and crashing onto the shore. Also, the conditions over the water were very intense — up to the point of zero visibility from the sea spray and rain that was moving along horizontally. The wind that was in excess of 200 miles per hour hitting the back of my building and my entry door was so intense and loud that I will never forget it. I was very lucky to not have lost my roof, but did incur some water damage from the rain that was pressing through every crevice.” Page 24  N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7

He evacuated to Puerto Rico about 10 days after Irma made landfall. “I loaded my boat up with my cats and a bag of clothes and headed to Salinas, Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, I was met by the most amazing and helpful people. I was there for a little bit less than a week and flew out of San Juan to Washington, D.C.”

He says one of the main reasons he decided to leave was because there were other tropical systems brewing and there was no cell or Internet service. “I was afraid that another storm would come without any warning. Turns out my feelings were right. Maria hit St. Croix and Puerto Rico only days after I left.”

www.virginislandsthisweek.com

Patrick has been through many storms in his time here in the USVI. Most of the storms were not destructive, but Marilyn in 1995 was a catastrophic storm. At that time, he lived in a very secluded part of Coral Bay on St. John. He also lived briefly in Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina. So “this is not my first rodeo,” says Patrick. “I ultimately made the decision to come to the states while standing in line for ice. I realized that I was just a burden to the very limited resources that were available to all people on the island.” He knows recovery is a long process and while there would be immediate relief initiatives, they dwindle as time passes. “I knew that I had a place I could go and also be much more effective in the beginning of a very long recovery effort. Having built up a large following with my charter career, I had many people checking on me and asking me how they could donate relief supplies. That’s when I made the decision to see what I could do to get help from the states.” So, Patrick started a relief mission. He created a YouCaring page for fundraising under the headline: “Help Captain Patrick help the USVI and BVI!” So far, he’s raised more than $8,000 to buy supplies and executed a relief pilgrimage to pick up donated supplies through many states. He started in Boston and worked his way down the East Coast with a 26-foot Penske box truck. His stops included New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and several stops in Florida. Then he offloaded all the donations onto a shipping container to be sent here to the islands where it was met by contacts and friends and distributed to those who need it most. He did half of the roadtrip alone, “but this is certainly not me doing this alone. There are many, many people involved who are connected in some way or who love the islands like I do.” Another parallel journey saw MacKenzie Miller, a project manager for Perfect Heart who moved to St. Thomas in January, driving a supply collection truck originating in Oregon with plans to drive the West Coast and then across to the South. She and Patrick had

Supplies were taken to a warehouse in South Florida where they were put in a container and shipped to St. Thomas.

talked by phone but had not met. They planned to rendezvous in Florida, but Patrick’s truck filled up so fast that she took a detour and headed east to connect earlier so they could collect more supplies in her truck. “I started in Oregon, and this is my second cross country relief trip. Patrick filled up his truck so quickly, he needed me to meet him in the Carolinas to help him,” said MacKenzie.

seeing it happen after Marilyn, but also from the overwhelming amount of people that are helping me with this project.” In fact, there’s still such interest that he might coordinate a second mainland relief trip to collect more supplies. Anyone interested in helping, can contact Patrick through his Facebook page or via his YouCaring web page.

The two chronicled their trip on their Facebook pages that were filled with photos and videos as the two yellow box trucks trekked down America’s highways picking up items that would make like a little easier for those navigating the aftermath of Irma and Maria. As for Captain Patrick, he’s not sure when Privateer Charters will be back on local waters “since this season will be compromised by reconstruction and rebuilding of the islands. It will truly depend on how quickly tourism resumes.” But he is hopeful about our recovery here in the USVI. “Having been here through Hurricane Marilyn, I have no doubt that the islands and their beautiful people will come back faster and better than anyone can imagine. I know this not only from

Nate’s Custom Charters Launches New Boat for the Season Nate McGowan has been on St. Thomas for 20 years. When he was in high school, he did a sea semester and sailed around the Caribbean for six months. “We started in St. Thomas and I fell in love with the island at first sight. As soon as I graduated high school, I bought a one-way ticket with no place to stay and no work. The rest is history.” Now Nate is the captain of his own charter boat business – Nate’s Custom Charters.

“This boat is huge and so comfortable. You won't find another day boat that offers two crew and 15-foot-wide boat that is so stable and comfy.” Getting on and off the boat is easy both on the dock and in the water. Nate made specialized ladders and boarding doors to accommodate anyone. The boat also offers a full bathroom, bar, tons of cup holders, and a great sound system. “I am structuring my costs to be very fair and easy. There is a set cost for the boat for the day, and fuel will be determined at the end of the day. For the size of the boat, she is very fuel efficient.”

They know who they are going with, and it is about what they want, not sticking to a schedule. I might not be the biggest, but I stay consistent. And while Hurricanes Irma and Maria may have blown through our islands, Nate was preparing for the upcoming season by having a new spacious 36foot boat built. It’s now here and he’s open for business for visitors and residents to spend a day remembering what makes the Virgin Islands so special. “My new boat is amazing in many ways, and offers comfort and a ride that can't be beat. PROTECT THE SEA AROUND YOU It took hundreds of years to grow our beautiful reefs. It takes only a moment to destroy them. Taking live coral and sponge ruins the scenic beauty for others (and for the marine life!). It is also against the law. This is a lovely part of the world; please help us keep it that way.

2. COKI BEACH Located on Coki Point right before Coral World Ocean Park, this white sand beach with crystal clear water offers excellent snorkeling and diving. Beachside restaurants serve picnic fare including burgers, sandwiches and some local dishes. There is a dive shop, jet ski rental and several vendors renting snorkel gear, beach chairs and floats. The USVI is proud to be home to Blue Flag certified beaches and marinas. Our Blue Flag sites, located on all three major islands, are operated according to strict ethics that respect the environment as well as our visitors who use them. Learn more online at:

3. HULL BAY A favorite northside beach for local families and surfers. It offers the best surfing on St. Thomas when there is a north swell but the locals are very protective so be aware. Hull Bay Hideaway restaurant and bar is located just behind the beach. Try out their fish tacoes. Located n the northside. Plenty of parking. (#3 on map)

You will find it just past the Univeristy of the Virgin Islands going west on Route 30. Brewer’s Bay is a local family favorite for weekend picnics and gatherings. Visitors can relax in the shallow waters or sunbathe on the wide shore. On weekends there tends to be a lot of activity and loud local music! (#1 on map)

4. LINDBERGH BAY Named after the famous aviator who landed nearby in 1928, this tranquil bay is flanked by three hotels, palm trees and sea grapes that line the shore. Located on the airport road. (#4 on map) www.virginislandsthisweek.com

5. LINDQUIST BEACH

8. SECRET HARBOUR BEACH

11. DOROTHEA BEACH

One of St. Thomas’s most virginal and pristine beach, Lindquist Beach is situated on the east end of the island. The water is crystal-clear and typically calm. The left side of the beach is great for snorkeling. Owned by the Virgin Islands government it is well maintained and kept clean. There are a few picnic tables but get there early! (#5 on map)

A calm, quiet beach located at Secret Harbour Beach Resort, this beach has a floating swim platform and beach chairs available for rent. There is a dive company right on the beach. Also a restaurant and bar. (#8 on map)

This is a very natural beach...no ammenities, bars or restaurants. The Dorothea condominiums are located there in the flat area behind the beach. Being a northside beach it can be rough during the winter with some big swells and currents that can push you towards the rocks. There is some great snorkeling there. (#11 on map)

9. LIMETREE BEACH 6. MAGENS BAY This beautiful one-mile stretch of beach is St. Thomas’ most favorite and famous beach and is a public park. The water is usually very calm in this heart-shaped protected bay. Beach chairs and floats are available for rent and burgers, pizzas and other snacks can be found at the snack bar. Picnic tables located all along the beach. Lifeguards are on duty. (#6 on map)

There is often a bit of gentle surf on this beach. It is a bit rocky as you enter the water so tread carefully. Limetree is usually very quiet with not too many people around. There is a watersports hut open every day except Saturday. (#9 on map)

10. VESSUP BEACH

7. SAPPHIRE BEACH The sapphire-blue waters here are great for snorkeling, windsurfing, jet skiing and more. The beach is located on the east end at Sapphire Beach Resort. (#7 on map)

www.virginislandsthisweek.com

A local favorite on the weekends for parties with loud music. Good time to go is during the week when it is very empty and peaceful. There is a watersports hut there that rents out sailboats, SUPs (Stand Up Paddle Boards), windsurfers and other fun water toys. The long stretch of beach is great for taking a leisurely stroll and the water is nice for swimming. (#10 on map)

SPECIAL NOTE The hurricanes may have made a mess, but Mother Nature comes back strong and we still have beautiful blue waters and sandy beaches. Most are open by now and have been cleared for use and swimming. But check with your taxi driver, hotel, local media or our Virgin Islands This Week Facebook page on the latest beach advisories. Historic Self Guided Walking Tour IN DOWNTOWN CHARLOTTE AMALIE

1 LEGISLATURE BUILDING Originally a barracks for Danish troops, dating back to 1874. 2 FORT CHRISTIAN This National Historic Landmark was completed by Danish settlers in 1680. Built originally to protect the colony from hostile marauders, It has housed a jail, a governor’s residence, a place of worship, and a police station. Although currently being restored, the fort is open MondayFriday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. 3 EMANCIPATION GARDENS Commemorates the emancipation of slaves by Danish Governor Peter von Scholten on July 3, 1848 4 GRAND GALLERIA In 1841, this unique structure opened as the Grand Hotel. It remained a popular place for vacationers to stay until 1975. 5 FREDERICK LUTHERAN CHURCH Established in 1666, the same year Erik Smidt took formal possession of St. Thomas in the name of the Danish West India Company. The present building rebuilt in1826.

8 99 STEPS One of several ‘step-streets’ built by the Danes to solve the problem of getting around the town’s hilly terrain. The bricks were brought from Denmark as ballasts in the holds of trade ships. Walk to the top (actually 103 steps) and you will find yourself near the foot of more stairs leading to Blackbeard’s Castle. 9 HAAGENSEN HOUSE A restored home built in the early 1800s by island entrepreneur Hans Haagensen. The salons and chambers are furnished with period antiques. 10 BLACKBEARD’S CASTLE Also located just above 99 steps is this Danish watch tower built in the late 1600’s. The view from the tower offered a perfect vantage point to spot enemy ships entering the harbor. 11 CROWN HOUSE Built in the middle of the 18th century, this stately home was the residence of two past VI governors. It is now a private residence.

6 SEVEN ARCHES MUSEUM Once a Danish craftsman’s residence, it was built in the 19th century featuring a total of seven arches to support the staircase.

12 HOTEL 1829 This structure offers an ideal example of classic island architecture. It was built as a townhouse for a French sea captain and now serves as an exclusive in-town hotel.

7 GOVERNMENT HOUSE This is the official residence of the Governor of the Virgin Islands. The building was constructed by the Danish Colonial Council between the years 1865 and 1867.

13 POST OFFICE SQUARE A full service United States post office is located within the strategically located building that marks the beginning of “Main Street.”

14 ST. THOMAS REFORMED CHURCH Not only is this the oldest congregation in the Virgin Islands; it is also the longest standing denomination with a continuous ministry in the United States. 15 ST. THOMAS SYNAGOGUE This National Historic Landmark is the second oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere. The original synagogue was built by Sephardic Jews in 1796 and was rebuilt in 1833. 16 ST THOMAS HISTORICAL TRUST MUSEUM - RAADETS GADE Learn about the island’s history, culture and architecture through displays of artifacts and photographs. See the collection of colonial West Indian furniture. Sign up and take our guided Downtown Walking Tour or our Historical Hassel Island Tour. You can also call the Historical Trust office (340)774-5541.

17 MARKET SQUARE People come here from all over the island to sell fresh fruit, fish, sauces, and vegetables. Traditionally, the busiest market day is Saturday; vendors arrive hours before dawn.

Tillett Gardens

C

elebrating over 50 years in Tutu, Tillett Gardens was designed by Jim and Rhoda Tillett to be an "old world retreat from the stresses of life, centered around arts and crafts." The property used to be a Danish cattle farm, but now you will find the old

farm sheds converted to brightly colored semi-open buildings set among tropical plants and trees. The garden is an island within an island-a place to relax in the shade of the trees and an opportunity to experience the unique and colorful culture of the Caribbean while our artists create and the local business owners bustle about their days in Paradise.

Airport is open, but repairs continue daily. The Cyril E. King Airport Terminal on St. Thomas was severely damaged by Hurricane Irma and again by Hurricane Maria, less than two weeks later. According to the Virgin Islands Port Authority, the airport’s entire roof was damaged and windows were blown in, which led to extensive flooding and destruction of property. The Port Authority reopened the King terminal to limited commercial traffic on Sept. 28 – less than nine days after the passing of Maria. Most airlines have resumed service to St. Thomas, but some are still offering only one flight per day until repairs to the terminal are completed. American Airlines has added a second daily flight to St. Thomas. The damaged terminal gates have been repaired and the preclearance area at the King Terminal is done. However, normal operations will not resume until repairs in the TSA area have been completed. VIPA’s goal is to fully reopen the CEKA Terminal by mid-December. VIPA recommends that passengers arrive three to four hours prior to your flight to allow enough time for screening.

ST. JOHN SHOPPING

WELCOME to St. John!

A GUIDE FOR VACATIONERS IN-THE-KNOW

THE GEM OF the u.s. virgin islands Courtesy of Caneel Bay Resort.

You can still enjoy the ecological wonders that beautiful St John has to offer. While the other U.S. Virgin Islands may bustle, St. John has always been a laid-back bit of Caribbean paradise. Two-thirds of the island was donated in 1956 to the United States by Laurance Rockefeller for use as a national park. The result of his generosity created an unspoiled get-away offering tranquil beaches, sleepy lagoons, underwater coral gardens, scenic roads, walking trails, lush foliage and fascinating plantation ruins.

all open. Other lovely beaches are too. You can stay updated on the park recovery progress online at www.facebook/virginislandsNPS

Just three miles from St. Thomas, the island of St. John is not only scenic, but also populated by a number of independent free spirits. “Love City” – as it is affectionately called – is home to artists, artisans and others who value its unique tropical setting. You’ll find St. Johnians open, friendly, quick to lend a hand and very much in love with their island.

The populated and commercial areas of St. John are being restored as well.

Of course, this gem of an island was hit hard by Hurricane Irma and then lashed again by Maria. But the good thing is that on an island that is mostly national park, Mother Nature restores herself more efficiently than manmade things can be rebuilt. Virgin Islands National Park has been a focus of immediate cleanup and restoration and by Thanksgiving, Trunk Bay, Honeymoon and Hawksnest beaches were Page 56  N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7

So, ecotourism and exploration on St. John continue to be a fun way for locals and visitors alike to learn about the environment and the island. Just remember to treasure and take care of this natural treasure.

The quaint streets and walkways of Cruz Bay are still inviting though remnants of the hurricanes’ wrath remain. It is still a village of artisans’ shops, stores, galleries and dining establishments for all tastes. A short walk across from the ferry dock brings you to Mongoose Junction. Plan to spend time at Mongoose Junction with great shopping for jewelry, resort wear and hand-made gifts in an area bursting with one-of-a-kind shops, casual or fine dining. On the other end of St. John via meandering Route 10 is Coral Bay. During the 8-mile trip, you may spot a deer, a donkey, an iguana or a mongoose. Once known as Cruz Bay’s quiet little sister, Coral Bay has been coming into her own as others have

discovered the charm and beauty of this outpost. Artists, salty sailors and characters from around the globe reside here and have many a tall tale to tell the willing visitor or fellow Virgin Islander. But that side of island was pummeled by the hurricanes and many boats, usually that could find safe harbor there, were lost to the storms. Still you will find locals and visitors gathering at local hangouts to catch up and helping each through the recovery. Coral Bay remains the “get-away-from-it-all” side of St. John. Whether you plan to shop, dine, tour, swim, snorkel, hike or simply stroll among the unique shops, you are sure to find St. John offers everything you envisioned in a Caribbean paradise. Visit, and enjoy … Love City remains easy to love.

Hope & Recovery Picking Up The Pieces of Paradise St. John is on the road to recovery By Charlotte Atkins Publisher

Caravan Gallery’s Beverly Lockett was on vacation in Croatia and Montenegro with dear friends during September so she was not on St. John when Irma and Maria hit. “Needless to say, it was not much of a vacation as we were glued to our devices, looking at pictures of our homes and businesses and getting reports of who was alive. So much sadness and tears.” She described seeing the first pictures of the destruction caused by hurricane Irma. “It looked like St. John was hit by a nuclear bomb, with nothing left but brown, instead of our lush green island,” she said. “Looking at the pictures of utter destruction, I was certain some people would not be found alive as so many homes were leveled. I am sad to say, however, I did lose one friend who died at sea and know of another boater in Coral Bay who was never found.”

Green is returning to Mongoose Junction and St. John.

As president of the Mongoose Junction Merchant Association, she was relieved the shopping complex is made up of a strong set of buildings and fared rather well. “Yes, our stately architecture now has some blue tarps but things are being repaired. As of November 20, four restaurants have reopened, along with 11 shops.”

(Photos by Beverly Lockett)

Amid the rebuilding and recovery, locals are trying to return to some sense of normalcy. Holiday celebrations are helping. While the Halloween event was more intimate, it was uplifting for all ages.

Continued on next page.

St. John suffered catastrophic damage from Irma and Maria. Homes were leveled. Businesses were damaged or destroyed. Boats were lost, sunk or tossed onshore. Caneel Bay Resort was so heavily damaged, it’s not expected to reopen until 2019.

Cleanup is a team effort.

www.virginislandsthisweek.com www.virginislandsthisweek.com

Fortunately, St. John is getting some major relief help from notables like country singer Kenny Chesney, who has long owned a home on the island, and from billionaire Michael Bloomberg, whose company cofounder also has a St. John home.

Hope & Recovery St. John is on the road to recovery...continued recovery happens all around them.

And the Mongoose Junction Merchants Association hosted its traditional kickoff of the holiday season the day after Thanksgiving. A special invitation was extended to those helping with the recovery and away from family and friends during the holidays.

And folks like Lockett are just so happy to be open for business and watching St. John adjust to its new normal.

Another bright spot was the announcement by USVI Gov. Kenneth Mapp and the U.S. Department of the Interior that Trunk Bay, Honeymoon and Hawksnest Beaches were again open. You can stay updated on other beaches and national park recovery progress online at www.facebook.com/virginislandsNPS Beached boats along Cruz Bay have steadily been being removed and stores, bars and restaurants are reopening. Locals and relief workers can be seen dining and chatting as

Jack the cat survived!

Beverly Lockett

“We are blessed that Caravan Gallery did very well and reopened shortly after power was restored. It took some time to get internet and process a backlog of web orders from so many great customers who wanted to help with the recovery by supporting our business,” she said “In the past, customers would come from the beach in flip flops and leave sand on the floor, now, relief workers wear boots and leave mud. But we are ever so thankful for all their help and love meeting folks who might never have discovered the special place called St. John.”

"They pulled over while we were photographing the Trunk Bay overlook and asked what beach it was. We thanked them for their service on the island and were so impressed when they said that it was the most beautiful beach they had ever seen even after the hurricanes … there was some great perspective in their comments." — Janet Simonsen Photo by Steve Simonsen Page 58  N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7

STILL TO DO IN ST. JOHN

Page 70

Learn about undersea life on Trunk Bay’s Underwater Trail

instagra m your st. john photos ! #vithisw eek

By Lydia Harris

Trunk Bay on St. John is one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean. An awe-inspiring heart-shaped bay, its setting in the stunning Virgin Islands National Park offers clear water, fine white sand, plenty of shade, a gift shop, watersports center, snack bar, showers, restrooms, changing areas and a picnic pavilion. None of which seems unusual – on the surface. So what makes Trunk Bay stand out from other beaches?

The underwater self-guided snorkeling trail!

1. Hiking Hiking is one of the most popular activities on St. John. Virgin Islands National Park provides a wide variety of

hiking experiences and more than 20 trails to choose from. Some meander through historic ruins or take you to a bird viewing deck on one of the park’s lovely salt ponds. Others lead to beautiful beaches. In the wake of the hurricanes, be sure to check the park’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/virginislandsNPS for updates on what is open and accessible. threatened species, under the US Endangered Species Act on the World Conservation Union’s Endangered Species List. But there’s good news! US Geological Survey research scientist Caroline Rogers reports that this sea life "appears to be recovering in some areas," particularly in Trunk Bay, where Elkhorn Coral "is coming back naturally," she says. Studies of the species in Trunk Bay are supported by the USGS, National Park Service, Friends of the VI National Park, University of the Virgin Islands and the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund.

2. Trunk Bay Underwater Snorkel Trail Trunk Bay is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and as such is one of the most popular beaches on St. John. It features a 225-yard long underwater snorkeling trail. Underwater plaques along the trail describe the various species of coral. There is a small entry fee. Kids, 16 and under, are free. If you are on St. Thomas you can take the ferry from Red Hook and catch a taxi or bus to Trunk Bay. Plaques guide the way to undersea life on Trunk Bay’s Underwater Trail.

Rent or bring your own snorkel gear and step into an undersea world of coral and fish. The 650-foot underwater trail (maintained by the National Park Service) features plaques that provide a wealth of information about the sealife you’ll see beneath the water’s surface. Keep an eye out for colorful Angel Fish, Parrott Fish, Sergeant Majors, Yellow Tail Snapper and Puffer Fish, which swells up when it’s threatened. Also watch for sea turtles that swim effortlessly then pop up their heads for air from time to time. Among the coral in Trunk Bay, you’ll see: Brain Coral, with folds and grooves that look remarkably like a brain; Fan Coral is wide, thin and rounded and sways back and forth to the rhythm of the tides; Finger Coral has large pores, grows in thick colonies, and its branches have swollen tips. Of particular interest is Elkhorn Coral. Among the Caribbean’s most abundant coral only 30 years ago, in March it became the first coral to be proposed for entry as a

Admission to Trunk Bay is $4 for adults; ages 16 and younger are free; Golden Age and Golden Access annual cardholders are $2.

3. Watersports St John offers visitors some of the best watersports in the world and some vendors are already open for business. Whether it is a day sail, private charter, parasail, sunset sail, or a waverunner rental. We highly recommend Virgin Islands Ecotours, offering daily guided tours from their Honeymoon Beach Hut. Their All-Inclusive Day Pass includes SUPs, kayaks, chairs, floats, snorkel gear and lockers. All items are also available to rent with free delivery to rental cars, hotels, villas, or beaches. Visit www.viecotours.com. Use promocode: STTWE or call (340) 779-2155.

4. Waterlemon Cay Waterlemon Cay is a small cay within Leinster Bay. To get there you'll need to do a short

20-minute hike (.8 miles) in from the Annaberg ruins parking lot. It is a relatively easy hike following a flat trail alongside the bay's edge. This is a top-notch snorkeling spot. You will see all kinds of sea life there. You can also go with Virgin Islands Ecotours on their guided tour of Annaberg ruins and Waterlemon Cay (340-779-2155). Swim among the fish along the Trunk Bay Underwater Trail.

5. Shopping The shopping on St. John is a cultural extravaganza. Local crafts and art are available in small stores and

galleries. Tropical clothing, handmade and locally designed jewelry, exotic clothing from around the world are tantalizingly displayed in the cute and colorful stores of Mongoose Junction, the main shopping area in Cruz Bay. There you can mix a halfday of shopping with a delightful meal at any of the restaurants located there.

The island has many beaches to enjoy, but here are the most notable. Amenities and concessions may not be restored yet at some locations, but progress has been noticeable.

Honeymoon Beach is a pretty beach with sandy shoreline surrounded by sea grape and coconut trees. It offers great snorkeling, swimming and lounging. You can access the Honeymoon Beach via the Lind Point Trail which starts just behind the Virgin Islands National Park Visitor Center in Cruz Bay and connects to Caneel Bay Resort.

Trunk Bay

The most popular beach on St. John, Trunk Bay, reopened just before Thanksgiving. It is known for its 650 feet of underwater snorkeling trail that includes identification signs on the bottom of the sea, describing the coral formations and fish that inhabit the waters. It’s educational and a fun way to spend the day. The beach is part of the National Park and it is the only beach with an admission fee ($4).

Caneel Bay

Hawksnest

Francis Bay

Caneel Bay Beach can be hiked to from Cruz Bay along the Lind Point Trail. It is the ultimate white sand beach. The water is usually very calm and shallow, perfect for a day of swimming and sunning. Caneel Bay Resort suffered heavy damage in the hurricanes. This beach has become a popular gathering spot for boaters lately.

One of St. John’s most convenient beaches, Hawksnest Beach offers picnic tables and barbecue grills. There is also plenty of parking. A great snorkeling reef starts close to shore.

Francis Bay is one of St. John’s longest beaches. Long white sand beach with calm, clear water protected from the easterly winds. The Francis Bay Trail runs along a salt pond and offers great bird watching. There is good snorkeling for beginners on the west end, towards Maho Bay. For experienced snorkelers go to the rocky section at the other end of the beach.

Cinnamon Bay

One of the longest beaches in St. John’s National Park is Cinnamon Bay, it is about a mile long. While there is no snorkel trail, there is great snorkeling to the right side of the beach, if you don’t mind the swim or check out the nature trail across from the campground.

Maho Bay

Maho Bay is great for children. The water is shallow and protected. Look carefully in the sand while snorkeling; you might see a stingray, just look for the outline in the sand.

Salomon Bay

Great Cruz Bay

Another favorite with the locals because it is accessible only by trail, either from Caneel Bay or along the Lind Point Trail out of Cruz Bay (about a mile walk, not challenging) and thus is mostly deserted. A perfect place for a relaxing day on the beach.
