We are a unique place to visit with a variety of islands: St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and dozens of small cays and islets. Each island is unique. Each offers distinct and memorable experiences.
St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. It is the intent of the VI Lit Fest to probe new ideas, offer new opportunities for writers to hone their craft and become one of the most unifying cultural events within the Virgin Islands, the region and the world. Besides offering a space for purchasing books and promoting critical thinking in our exchange of points of view with authors, the hope is that the festival will become a place for exhibiting the intellectual and spiritual dynamism of the cultural life in the Virgin Islands. If you wish to join the Cavalcade or launch your new book, contact us at usvilitfest@gmail.com.
The 4th Annual Literary Festival & Book Fair is happening despite storms and setbacks. The 2018 Program Chair for the third year in succession is Alscess Lewis-Brown, UVI Professor and Editor of The Caribbean Writer. “We are aiming to make this abbreviated version of our treasured festival an unforgettable event,” Brown said with decided enthusiasm. “And our central theme: “Rough Tides, Tough Times: Reflections and Transitions” is both a gesture to and a capitalizing on our all-around tumultuous transition into 2018. The festival is a toast to ideas and a celebration of the imagination through literature, panel discussions and workshops on writing and publishing. This year, there will be a special emphasis on photography and film production.” Here are highlights of the two-day event: APRIL 13

The Caribbean Writer’s Volume 31— New Vistas: An Evolving Caribbean
The Caribbean Writer is pleased to announce the release of Volume 31, a tribute to the late Nobel laureate Derek A. Walcott. Volume 31 boasts literary content and tributes from such authors and scholars as Kwame Dawes, Kamau Brathwaite, Edward Baugh, Jamaica Kincaid, Sudeep Sen, Elizabeth Walcott Hacksaw and Anna Walcott Hardy, Founding Editor Erika Waters. It also includes insightful and exciting poetry, short-stories, personal essays, interviews, and book reviews by established and emerging writers from the Caribbean and its diaspora. “The Caribbean Writer is a gem of the University of the Virgin Islands that has garnered the support of each President since its existence, and I am honored to follow in that grand tradition,” said UVI President, David Hall. “That support has been consistent because of the obvious and inherent worth and value of this publication, and its centrality to the mission of the University of the Virgin Islands.” Volume 31 is edited by Alscess Lewis Brown, a published author of young adult literature and a member of the University’s adjunct faculty since 1990, teaching courses in literature, writing and the humanities. “Once again, I am delighted to have the distinct privilege and honor of editing this prestigious journal. The Caribbean Writer, the living testimony of Caribbean people, is showing signs that we cannot escape the changes taking place globally,” Brown said. Volume 31 is an imaginative and expressive review of the power, prescience, and resilience of the Caribbean experience. The Caribbean Writer is an international, refereed literary journal published by the University of the Virgin Islands each year. To maintain its high standard, the local editorial board is comprised of Dr. Lomarsh Roopnarine, a professor at the Jackson State University, and three professors from both UVI campuses, Dr. Vincent O. Cooper, Dr. Patricia HarkinsPierre, and Dr. Sharon Charles. The cover design, is a true-to-life painting by Peter Walcott, son of Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott. Copies are available at Undercover Books in Gallows Bay and The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted, and at UVI bookstores. Thank you so much to our loyal customers for the past 5 years! We’ve loved serving Great Authentic Mexican Food to the people of the US Virgin Islands! We survived Hurricane Maria (Cat 5) and can now celebrate Cinco de Mayo with you!
Everything starts with a dream. For many years for me, when I was young, I wanted to own my own restaurant. As years passed by, I moved from Mexico to the US and then to the VI in 2010. My dreams came true when my husband helped me put together a small place in Gallows Bay. We started with only 11 small tables and a bar. Now we have a large covered patio to dine al fresco. I am so grateful that we have been successful thanks to your patronage.

‘UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL’ PICTURE TAKING!
Cover Story: Photographer Emelyn Morris-Sayre For local photographer Emelyn MorrisSayre, life seems to have come full circle.
Fourteen years ago, Emelyn and her husband visited St. Croix for the first time and, after only three days, they put an offer on and purchased a home. Upon Jim’s retirement two years ago, they moved down to the island to fulfill their dream of living here all the time.
Emelyn spent the first eight years of her life in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico where her father was stationed with the US Department of Agriculture. Her love for photography began Emelyn Morris-Sayre. when her father took her to his make-shift darkroom and demonstrated how, by placing a white sheet of paper in a tray of developer, he could magically make her picture appear. She was hooked and begged for a camera.
Passion Fruit Flower.
The Caribbean gave Emelyn a wealth of subjects for her photographs and she finds herself focusing on macro shots of the colorful flowers and the unusual local produce, like those on the cover of the April issue. Although her camera of choice is her Nikon 7000, Emelyn always has her iPhone close at hand. Utilizing several creative applications and fine tuning her processing in Lightroom, many of her images look like paintings. In addition to working as a Realtor for RE/MAX St. Croix, Emelyn serves on the Board of Directors of The Friends of the East End Marine Park and the Grapetree Area Property Owners Association. She also helps monitor turtle activity on the East End and loves treasure hunting for chaney pottery pieces.
Having moved back to Arlington, Virginia, Emelyn spent her high school years working on the school newspaper and yearbook. In college, she helped finance her education by co-publishing a student newspaper utilizing her photography, sales and writing skills. After graduation, she moved to Colorado, married and started a family. She continued to work in publishing and eventually became co-publisher of a weekly newspaper.
Her matted prints, canvases, and greeting cards can be found at local galleries including Many Hands and Iona Sky in Christiansted, Undercover Books & Gifts in Gallows Bay, and at local fairs. She will be participating in Art Walk Thursday at Iona Sky on April 19.
Whenever possible, she would photograph her Flamboyant. favorite subjects—flowers and landscapes. Inspired Returning to the Caribbean to pursue her photogby the artist, Georgia O’Keefe, Emelyn especially enjoys macro shots of her raphy, Emelyn Morris-Sayre has truly come full circle. subjects bringing out every possible detail. After a few tough years, she left the publishing business, remarried and, with the encouragement of her husband, Jim, she became a realtor. Jim also supported her efforts in pursuing her photography again.

With the advancement of digital cameras, Emelyn became re-energized! She joined numerous groups of professional photographers and participated in numerous workshops and shows across the country. Her mentors include Mike Berenson, Darren White, and Joseph Roybal and she will be attending a photo workshop this year in Cuba with photographer Jeff Johnson.

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!
(340) 776-0656. Page 38 • April / May 2018
Traditional Danish Place Designations Remain Here
Oxholm map of Christiansted dated 1779. Note the grid pattern of the streets.
by Nina York Tradition has a prevailing presence in our island community, sometimes expressing itself in amusing ways. One aspect has to do with our geographical designations that, despite our having been part of the United States, always known as a republic, we retain street names that reflect a kingdom, as our previous owner Denmark has been for a thousand years. Our two towns Christiansted and Frederiksted are named for the Danish Kings of that time. As for the street names, the Danish version is often a tongue-twister to an English speaker –saying Queen Cross Street beats trying to utter in Danish Dronningens Tværgade. Having them named for the King, Queen and Prince (but why not a Princess?) is a sentimental carry-over from 18th century days. Royalty is also making itself noticed in the manner that the former Danish West Indies are divided into Quarters, which were designated by the prominent Danish surveyor, Lieutanant and later Governor Peter Lotharius Oxholm. The maps from late 18th century show our island divided into 9 Quarters, with King’s, Queen’s and Prince’s Quarters being prominent, along with more prosaic Northside, two West End, two East End and Company Quarters, the latter referring to the Danish West India and Guinea Company that bought this island from France. This Quarter classification is still being used today. But our sticking with tradition does not end there. Our over 100 island estate names are also retentions from the distant past and, while only a handful carry Danish names (e.g. Bülowsminde, Waldberggaard, Høgensborg, Marienhoj, Fredensborg, Frederikshaab, Fængselet, even Et Stykke Land -(Engl. A Piece of Land), they quite accurately reflect that the population of plantation owners numbered few Danes, with English, Irish and Scots being a majority, which may be the reason why we, to all visitors’ consternation, drive on the left. They gave names to the majority of the estates such as Mount Pleasant, Profit, Fareham, Cane Garden, Tipperary, Oxford, Prosperity, Judith’s Fancy, Morning Star, and dozens of others. But the multi-national character of our population and history is reflected in place names such as La Reine, La Grange, Bellevue, La Vallee, Granard, Montpellier, La Grande Princesse showing French influence, and Spanish: Campo Rico; Dutch: Rust op Twist, German (maybe from the Moravians that came here): Die Liefde, Munster, Plessen, Hafensicht. It is no wonder that St. Croix is known for its history, and while aspects of the past involving slavery that was a major part of our economy are not pleasant to contemplate, we have an amazing record of the entire Danish period from 1734 to 1917 in over 5 million documents now accessible on the internet including a census of all persons that lived here during that period. Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!
Free Advice
I spoke to a new entrepreneur in the wedding industry recently that gave me pause. A prospective client asked about his service and wanted to meet to discuss the details. Eager for the business, he thoroughly presented his business model. The client was ready to book but, to ensure they would be getting “their money’s worth,” asked the vendor to comp them on part of the service and he obliged. I fell out of my seat when I heard this! I have been a new business owner and understand the desire to close the deal and make your dream a success. I have also been a client who wanted to ensure that the product/service to value ratio is equal. The client/vendor relationship is so delicate—when its good, its great, when it’s bad, it’s miserable for everyone. So how do you find the balance? As a seasoned professional, I would encourage new wedding vendors to create policies that support their business and build the market. Giving your services away for free may land the client, but depletes your morale, diminishes your reputation, and hurts your bottom line. Learn to say “No” with a smile; its ok to stand up for your business. If the client chooses another vendor, you have dodged a major bullet; there is more in the pipeline. If they decide to continue with your service policies, congratulations, you have overcome a big hurdle! As a client, who understands good service and what it takes to provide it, I never ‘sign on the dotted line’ if I have doubts about anything. I love getting a deal but also believe, in some situations, quality may prevail over price. Its hard to walk away from a service because they were already booked or out of your budget. Take a breath. Before you ask a vendor to do something outrageous, research alternatives; St. Croix has a wealth of talented wedding professionals to choose from. I leave you with two old adages—to the vendors, ‘no good deed goes unpunished’ and to the clients, ‘you get what you pay for.’ Apply these where needed.

Reconnecting with Nature! Part 6 in The Nature Conservancy Series by Kemit-Amon Lewis, Coral Conservation Manager
What connects you to nature? For some, it’s the beauty of an early morning sunrise. For others, it’s the tranquility of our turquoise waters. And, for others it’s the peaceful sound of raindrops falling on a rooftop. I was fortunate to grow up exploring my home island of St. Croix. I spent many days snorkeling at Dorsche Beach on the West End. We shared space with sea turtles and dolphins and endless schools of fishes. We explored the rain forest, bathing in waterfalls and hiking to new places that we had never seen before. At a very young age I developed a love for nature and that, single-handedly, defined my career path.
We currently have trained over 40 restaurants and continue to grow the initiative. We are also working to recover the green sea turtle population at The Nature Conservancy’s Jack and Isaac Bay Preserve on St. Croix’s East End. Through our active work to conserve corals and sea turtles, I have been given a renewed hope for natural St. Croix. I’m inspired whenever I swim over a thicket of our out-planted corals and was blown away last August when I saw corals that we out-planted in 2012 spawn (reproduce) naturally. We’ve seen the sea turtle population grow from about 8 in 1994 to over 270 in 2016 and each sea turtle hatchling that leaves our Jack and Isaac Bay Preserve reminds me of why I chose this career path.
I chose to attend the St. Croix Central High School because of the marine biology program and SCUBA club where I learned to dive, strengthening my connection with the marine world below the surface. And, when equipped with degrees in marine science, I quickly returned home to make a difference. You see, while our marine environment provides many benefits to us, we don’t always take good care of it. For most, because they aren’t underwater every day, many of the issues that affect our reefs and other organisms remain out of sight and out of mind. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have that luxury. I spend so much time underwater, that I am literally faced with many issues that I cannot ignore. And, for the last eight years, I have dedicated my life to finding solutions to the issues causing the decline of our world’s coral reef from the US Virgin Islands, across the Caribbean, and most recently, in the Pacific. Oh, sea turtles too!
Green Turtle hatchling.
All photos by Kemit-Amon Lewis.
And, even if you’re not a marine scientist, I encourage you to always remember what excites you about nature. Many of us forget what an amazing place Earth truly is, but some of us appreciate how therapeutic nature can be, even in the simplest ways. Whether you go sky diving, paddle boarding, fishing, swimming, hiking, bird watching, or just sitting quietly to meditate, appreciate the spaces and opportunities that nature provides for your well being. In return, here’s my challenge for you to help us to keep nature beautiful. Get informed! Learn about the issues so that you can do your part to reverse the decline. Conserve energy and avoid the use of harsh chemicals. Reduce, reuse, and recycle! Support conservation groups and conservation-minded political candidates and their efforts to positively influence change. Choose sustainable seafood!
Jack and Isaac Bay Preserves.
And, if you are still at a lost for ways to connect with nature, visit www. reefconnect.org and www.nature.org/ caribbean to learn about ways that you can help us achieve our mission to preserve the land and water upon which all life depends. Here on St. Croix and across the Caribbean, our ocean truly defines our way of life. Beyond the ecological and economic benefits that we receive from nature, there are many cultural and spiritual benefits that are priceless. And, we all have a role to play in preserving our Caribbean way of life into the future.
We launched our coral reef restoration work in 2009 on St. Croix and have trained colleagues on our best practices in the Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, Grenada, Cuba, Curacao, China, and Guam. We developed and launched a BleachWatch program that trains local volunteers how to identify and report coral bleaching to us. We respond to vessel groundings so that damaged Elkhorn coral out-plants spawning. reefs can be restored. And, we developed and launch the Reef Responsible Sustainable Seafood Initiative, through which we train To get updates on The Nature Conservancy’s work in the Caribbean, local restaurants on St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John on best pracfollow us on Facebook/CaribbeanTNC. tices for the seafood that they source and serve at their businesses. DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour! w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Lås bilen, gå ikke med værdifulde smykker i byen, og hold dig til de befolkede områder.

THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).
CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in63 Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

C.H.A.N.T. Begins Feeder to The Legacy Project A New Building Arts Apprenticeship Program Located in the rear quadrant of Frederiksted town is an unsung testimony of St. Croix’s ancestral legacy: Free Gut. Made up of modest one and two-story vernacular buildings, these wooden structures provide a window into the past. Free Gut was established in 1750 as a neighborhood of freed Black craftspeople and entrepreneurs. Many of the structures were built over 200 years ago and they are evidence of the master craftsmen who built them but now they are starting to show the effects of prolonged neglect. As a response to the potential loss of such an intrinsically unique part of Frederiksted history, Crucian Heritage and Nature Tourism (CHANT) has developed a building arts apprenticeship program to teach local young adults the art of historic restoration. This program is in line with The Centennial Legacy Project, “In Search of Identity,” a collaborative project between Denmark and the USVI to not only better understand a joint history but to focus on the future with a restoration of the Old Army Barracks in Christiansted to become the Center for Architecture and Built Heritage teaching and training young craftsmen to understand and care for their island’s historical structures. CHANT’s Building Arts Institute hopes to serve as a feeder for this Center once it is established. With the guidance of local craftspersons, students will be taught traditional building arts including woodworking, blacksmithing, and stone masonry. None of the apprentices are self-proclaimed woodworkers, but they all have the desire to learn. They are gaining workplace experience while earning a living wage and taking away an education that will last a life time. CHANT’s Executive Director, Frandelle Gerard, emphasizes by saying, “These young men and women have the ability to become selfsustaining artisans and skilled craftspeople. They can lead the renaissance of the historically Black Free Gut neighborhood.”
Targeted block for restoration.
Their first woodworking job was building four sets of hand-crafted shutters to secure the building. Now, anyone who walks by can see the hard work that was put into their creation. The students were so successful that they are currently working on building shutters for the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street. The apprentices are also working on salvaged Crucian mahogany, creating cutting boards, signs and traditional ‘chairs of a thousand names.’
Wayah Hall and Rasheed Joseph install new shutters.
Wallen Wade, Jr.
Historic restoration involves many steps. In August 2017, we unlocked the doors of the first property slated for restoration, #38 Hospital Street. Inside the apprentices unearthed silverware, plates, kerosene lamps and old bottles. Parts of the property appeared entirely untouched for decades. With last September’s hurricanes, cleanup efforts took a different turn. The students began the challenging task of clearing debris from the buildings and assisted in cleaning St. Paul’s Episcopal Churches’ yard and schoolhouse. They also aided in the distribution of water, food and other donated supplies to community members as part of CHANT’s recovery efforts. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
CHANT’s new office, and home to The CHANT Building Arts Institute, is a few blocks away at #217 Custom House Street. Under the tutelage of Master Craftsman, Wayah Hall, apprentices have begun learning traditional woodworking techniques and historic restoration. The apprentices took on the responsibility of finishing the restoration of this new office space which entailed exposing Danish coral stone work, by hand-chipping away layers of paint, scaling scaffolding to stain the interior ceiling, and patching exterior damage to the masonry walls. They removed a dumpster-load of debris from the courtyard, repaired the stone wall of the garden bed, and filled it in with local herbs and medicinal plants.
The young people are also being mentored by prominent Crucian Architect, Gerville Larsen, who also spearheaded The Centennial Legacy Project along with Danish Architect Ulla Lunn. They are beginning to learn a little bit about architecture as they assist Mr. Larsen in taking as-built measurements for the production of an architectural drawing of Plot #38 Hospital Street. As he demonstrates the process, the apprentices take measurements and document their findings for inclusion in the final work product.
The CHANT Building Arts Institute is funded through an ArtPlace America Jomahl Sanes, Rasheed Joseph, Creative Placemaking Fund Grant in Wallen Wade, Jr. take measurments partnership with the Community Founwith Gerville Larsen. dation of the Virgin Islands— Invisible Heritage: Identity, Memory and Our Town. The initial and continuous purpose of this program is to tell the history of the Virgin Islands through the narrative of African Caribbean culture and the vernacular buildings of the town and to use art as a placemaker in the revitalization of the community. One of the apprentices, Jomahal Sanes, said it best, “To know where you’re going, you have to know where you’ve been.” The Building Arts Institute is in the process of something that has never been done in Frederiksted.

John’s Cuts & Colors
What does a great haircut and a view of Buck Island have in common? Enter John Eland, of John’s Cuts and Colors, at your service from Coakley Bay Condos, East End Road. Three years ago, John moved to St. Croix, from his home town of Delft in The Netherlands, bringing his knowledge and experience of the hair industry with him. Over his 30-year career, John has trained junior stylists, demonstrated his creativity at public seminars, and won “Best Salon of the Year’ with his own business in Delft for ten years. Locally, he has already been picked up by the theater crowd to do the hair for leading roles in Cinderella and The Drowsy Chaperone, and others. John specializes in all aspects of men’s and women’s haircuts, specifically razor cuts with the Aerorasor—a great new revolutionary cutting tool to create body and texture in every type of hair, dry, wet, curly, or thin, and is ideally suited for hair extensions. The four special blades, each with its own unique cutting techniques and effects, allows very detailed and creative work with maximum control and flexibility while cutting. For personal advice on hair and color techniques, John knows the Do’s and Don’ts! Are you having a party or a wedding? He is a trained stylist in bridal ‘updos’ and party hair styles, working with L’ANZA and Paul Mitchell products—the best in professional haircare and color protection. John Eland and Monique Morris, owner of Monique’s Beauty Studio for the past 25 years, are excited to announce that plans have begun for a salon transition later this year. The salon, located just 10 minutes East of Christiansted has that view waiting for you and perhaps the best cut of your life! Perfect Timing! Is the timing right for real estate? You better believe it is! It’s always the right time for real estate in the U.S. Virgins, (St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. Johns, Water Island). We have the brightest, sunniest days; the bluest skies; the friendliest people; the most beautiful Caribbean waters; and I can go on and on. St. Croix REAL ESTATE market has been very active post-hurricane Maria and there are no signs it will be slowing down any time soon. Buyers are soughing out their piece of paradise and our professional team of associates at RE/MAX St. Croix are making it happen. Are you in the market to invest in a vacation rental or second home? Take a moment and consider the value of having a home in the Caribbean to visit and rent out when you are not there. A Win-Win. Many listed properties come with a rental history and an established website which can be negotiated to be conveyed with the purchase. As with any property purchase, you should always consider a few things, such as location, condition, what upgrades may be required, fees, taxes, and insurance. If you are a property owner and have been considering listing your property, now is the time to get a Comparative Market Analysis, or CMA. A CMA will give you an idea of what your property is valued at in the current market by comparing the recently sold and presently listed properties to yours. The alterative to a CMA, would be to get an appraisal from a V.I. licensed appraiser. Whether you intend to sell or not, knowing the value of one of your major assets, your home, is always a good thing! We are ready for the Buyers looking to explore our islands and experience our home through our eyes, a local RE/MAX Associate and REALTOR®. Property owners, let us help you determine the market value of your property and the best plan for your real estate goals. Contact any one of our associates listed on page 2 of this magazine. bout fifty miles above the Earth, walnut size pieces of dust and ice are passing through the air so quickly that they burn up and you see a flash of light, a shooting star or meteor. The flash happens so quickly that if you say to a friend “look over there”, by the time they look the flash will be gone. On any clear dark night you might see a few meteors per hour. As a comet passes through space, it gives off gas and bits of dust. When the Earth passes through a cloud of this comet dust we see a meteor shower. The night of April 22nd-23rd will be the maximum of the Lyrid meteor shower. If you are away from bright lights and smog, between midnight and dawn you might see a twenty or so “shooting stars” per hour. The Sun sets in the West, so if you are facing the direction the Sun set, West is in front of you, South to your right, East behind you and North to your left. Look almost Page 64 • April / May 2018

due South and high in the sky. You should easily find Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. (The brightest star in the sky is the Sun!) Sirius is the tip of the nose of a dog, Canis Major, the Big Dog. Just to the north of Sirius is a slightly less bright star, this is Procyon, part of Canis Minor, the Little Dog. Look lower in the southern sky and you should find another bright star, this is Canopus. Canopus, the second brightest star in the night sky, marks the constellation of Carina. Carina is the keel of a ship, and it was originally part of the larger constellation Argo Navis, the ship Argo of Jason and the Argonauts fame. Argo Navis was divided into three constellations: Puppis (the poop deck), and Vela (the sails). Go back to Sirius and look a little to the West, you should easily find the bright stars that form Orion, the Hunter. Seven bright stars form the Hunter. Two stars form his shoulders (bright red Betelgeuse and Bellatrix), two more his knees (Saiph and the very bright Rigel) and three his belt.
Above Procyon in the Little Dog and Betelgeuse in Orion, look for two bright stars nearby each other and of about the same brightness. They almost look like twin stars, and in fact these two stars, Castor and Pollux, mark the heads of the Gemini Twins. According to mythology, Castor and Pollux were twin brothers and the sons of Jupiter. The twins accompanied Jason and the Argonauts in the quest for the Golden Fleece. Jupiter, the largest of all the planets is currently seen low in the eastern sky. If you are awake after about 1:00 a.m. two more planets will be visible in the eastern sky, Mars and Saturn. On a clear night, away from the bright lights, you might see a faint hazy band of light arcing across the sky. This is the Milky Way, our city of stars in the universe. The faint band is the light from uncountable stars so far away that their light adds up to this faint haze. You might think of the Milky Way Galaxy as shaped something like a fired egg. We are located about two-thirds of the way out in the white part of the egg. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
