On behalf of the people and Government of the United States Virgin Islands, I applaud St. Croix This Week magazine for highlighting the best in entertainment, siteseeing, dining, shopping, and a myriad of recreational activities available on St. Croix. Both residents and visitors will find on page after page of this helpful resource guide eyecatching attractions, on-island features, and other points of interest. Whether with family, friends, or on your own, this magazine has the inside track and advance view of all the upcoming events and activities on the “Big Island.” St. Croix’s relaxing beaches and rolling hillsides are the perfect complement for a weekend get-away, and the downtown shopping and restaurants in Christiansted and Frederiksted offer a variety of choices. There are hiking tours, snorkeling and scuba excursions, rainforest sights, and an abundance of other natural and cultural attractions throughout the island. The options for fun and entertainment are truly limitless, and St. Croix This Week provides immediate access to all of St. Croix’s major attractions, while highlighting those that are off-the-beaten path. As the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix has a natural beauty that is both charming and awe-inspiring. Its wondrous landscapes, hillside views, oceanfronts, and downtown areas tell the story of an island rich in culture and history. The influence from Denmark is readily visible in our architecture and windmills, offering a pleasant introduction to the experience of our people of strong Caribbean traditions. With a long history of providing the inside scoop on the latest and best in family fun and island excursion entertainment, St. Croix This Week truly captures the beat and pulse of our people. It is my pleasure to extend best wishes to all readers of St. Croix This Week for a safe and enjoyable experience in paradise. We hope you will enjoy our home as much as we enjoy hosting you.

Crucian Christmas Traditions by Nina York Tradition plays a large role in the Virgin Islands and, back in former days of slavery, Christmas and Easter were the only times the enslaved population were given time off. That called for celebration, which consisted of dressing up in costumes, masquerading, and making calls at other plantations, where dancing and merrymaking marked these gatherings. But with religious life playing a large role, churchgoing to celebrate the birth of Christ was and remains a major seasonal activity.

The official Crucian Christmas Carnival today extends for a whole month, from early December to a Three Kings Day parade the first week in January. But preparations for the celebrations and elaborate parade costumes begin months ahead.

Starting with a prince and princess pageant, later a competition for the queen title, a calypso monarch singing contest for adults and youngsters, a band competition and musical theme selection all draw crowds to their venues, and the festival village and amusement park with booths offering traditional food and drink, cultural performances and trinkets for sale continue for two weeks. Donkey races, and early morning tramps into town are other popular activities, but nothing equals the excitement of the parades at the end of the festivities – first the delightful children’s parade, where steel pan orchestras from schools and churches and groups of majorette twirlers vie for being the favorite of the crowds along the King Street route in Frederiksted. The following day, the Three Kings Day adult parade is the grand finale, featuring over a hundred troupes, floats, and individual entries – an extravaganza to the beat of loud music, bodies swaying, fantastic costumes, pageantry and pulsating energy and merriment, starting be-

fore noon and continuing until after dark. Large crowds line the parade route, and vendors of food and drink are interspersed. The village closes the following day with an old-time Calypso Show that evening. Frederiksted is the main venue of the festival because of its wide streets for the parades, but Christiansted has its tramp and mini-festival kickoff with a food fair, vendors, and rides for the children at Canegata Ball Park on December 13. Additional activities, not part of the official program but equally anticipated every year are the Boxing Day horse races and, in Christiansted harbor, the lighted Boat Parade. Santa Claus appears for many occasions, starting with Christmas Spoken Here at the St. George Village Botanical Garden followed by the Gallows Bay Christmas Festival. Check Events Calendar for dates and times.

AROUND THE ISLAND ARTfarm, LLC • 340-514-4873

Local farmer Luca Gasperi and family grow a great diversity of high quality salads, tomatoes, vegetables, herbs and fruits in small interplanted gardens on the South Shore. Now in their 4th season on the South Shore (14th year farming organically on St. Croix), ARTfarm is known for sweet local tomatoes in the winter months and pineapples in the summer, and local restaurant chefs prize their microgreens and edible flowers. Luca is always experimenting with new crops and the shady farmstand sits near several of the gardens and a tiny art gallery. Arrive early to the stand to greet your neighbors and for the best selection. The farm is available for weddings and farm-to-table events. Current produce listings on their website: ARTfarmLLC.com

Rustico – 340-718-7257

Conveniently located in Princesse Plaza, heading west on Route 75 (0.3 miles from 5 Corners). Twelve years meeting the decoration needs of St Croix`s local clientele and visitors from around the world, Rustico works hard to keep its merchandise fresh and original.

Sweet Lime Furnishings – 340-719-6360

At Sweet Lime Furnishings we believe two things—You should be as comfortable outdoors as you are indoors and your home furnishings should make your life easier, not harder. Our outdoor furniture collection—the largest on St. Croix—is elegant unfinished teak, manmade wicker over an aluminum frame or durable plastic lumber with a 20-year warranty. Our sofas and chairs are covered in washable or Sunbrella fabrics. Our woods are teak, mahogany and other durable hardwoods. And island life is also about fun, so you’ll also find exotic, one-of-a-kind pieces and the work of some of St. Croix’s best-known artists. We’re also happy to special order for you. Find us open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 until 4, on Facebook, and on the web at www.sweetlimefurnishings.com.

Galangal – 340-773-0076 As one approaches the 1729 House, the tan one across from Fort Christiansvaern Park, the Galangal sign, made from wine corks by a patron, is hardly visible from the street. Opening the aubergine door is almost magical as one steps inside an elegant white-table dining room filled with original paintings, and Indo-Colonial architectural elements. Sitting down at the cool, dry granite bar, one just knows their Martini is going to be ice cold and the red wine will be at 65 degrees. Galangal specializes in authentic modern Thai cuisine, combining traditional ingredients with international flavors and techniques. Freshness is the key to Galangal’s bold flavors and consistent quality. Spices from Vietnam and Singapore, curry pastes from Bangkok and unusual Asian vegetables grown in our own gardens give Galangal’s dishes their unique and authentic flavors. Even the soup is made à la minute. St. Croix’s #1 dining destination(tripadvisor.com). Dinner 5:30 - 9:30. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Dining on St. Croix A Taste of St. Croix — GALLOWS BAY

Galangal’s Evolving

The slickest dish on Galangal’s current menu isn’t one of the white-tablecloth restaurant’s signature curries, made from fragrant pastes imported direct from Bangkok. It isn’t the tamarind-laced pad thai noodles. It’s not even the burnished-crust New York strip—the island’s most decadent take on steak frites—garnished with fiery-sweet Thai chile jam and a pipinghot pile of crispy, generously seasoned fries. No, as Galangal enters its sixth season of offering national-caliber modern Thai, we predict the sleeper hit will be the Trio of Fresh Fish (pictured), a new dish featuring seared bronzino with pickled vegetables and caper butter; grilled organic salmon over silky turnip purÊe; and a hot, crispy spring roll bursting with sashimi-grade tuna tartare. Dreamed up by new chef de cuisine Kenneth Biggs, this pescatarian tour de force encapsulates in one single, breathtaking entree Galangal’s distinctive approach to Thai cuisine—the freshest ingredients, the most authentic flavors, gussied up with classical French technique—and the direction the restaurant continues to evolve. Even better: The nuanced flavors just so happen to pair beautifully with the restaurant’s Wine Spectator–recognized list of grand cru wines served at cellar temperature. A graduate of Johnson & Wales, Biggs honed his culinary talents at restaurants throughout the Northeast and St. Croix—listed in The Best Chefs in America 2013. A multiple winner at the annual Taste of St. Croix, Biggs is also a veteran when it comes to featuring the island’s bounty of fresh-picked fruits and vegetables, organic salad greens, and local wahoo, tuna, and mahi. So please, come on in for the authentic curries. They’re still here; they’re still terrific. Just don’t be surprised if you get tempted by the beurre blanc and foie gras, too. Island Art

CARIBBEAN MUSEUM CENTER for the ARTS SHOW OPENINGS DEC 11 & 12!

Meet Cover Artist Ken Daley “My parents emigrated to Canada in 1972 and moved to Cambridge, Ontario where my younger brother and I were born,” says Ken. “I’ve been to St. Croix many times to visit family and stayed for Ken Daley. weeks at a time. My grandma lives on St. Croix as well as my uncle and many cousins. My father used to draw when he was back in Dominica, so I believe that he passed on that gift to me. Both my parents noticed my growing interest in drawing and music, so they enrolled me into art and music classes at an early age.

Caribbean Riddims.

I had a great childhood, but I also encountered racial ignorance and prejudice. Being a person of color, in a predominately white town, did have its difficulties but having a small close-knit black community growing up helped formed my identity and instilled a sense of pride of who I am. It’s through these social gatherings where I learned about my roots and culture. My parents would often bring us to Dominica and St. Croix. I always looked forward to going there because I loved the heat and the breathtaking scenery. It fostered my fascination about my culture and understanding where my parents came from. When I got older, I continued to travel to Dominica on my own. It is the many trips down to Caribbean that became the inspiration and source for my artwork.”

Washing Day.

From as far back as he can remember, Ken was certain of one thing—he would live his life as an artist. As Ken explains, “Art is what I am.” He draws inspiration for his work from his African-Caribbean roots, his life experiences, and the people and cultures he encounters along the way. He explores art through different styles and materials—oil, acrylic, ceramic tiles, wood, nails and found materials—each spilling onto and infusing the other. His work is an explosion of colour and emotion, indelibly marking ‘forever’ impressions onto the mind of the viewer. Ken is an honorary graduate from the Art Centre of Central Technical School as well as an architectural technology graduate from Humber College in Toronto. He has exhibited his artwork within Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean, most recently at the annual Good Hope School Fine Art Shows. His work can be found in numerous private collections and, locally, at Many Hands, in Pan Am Pavilion, Christiansted. Ken has been featured in many print publications as well as on television and radio.

Brides & Vendors Register Online www.stcroixcaribbeanweddingexpo.com

340-772-2386

Everyone loves a deal and, when your planning a wedding, the deals seem few and far between. As soon as you mention the word wedding, the price tag seems to magically double. Every bride wants to have a fabulous event, but at what cost? I recently had an experience with a perspective client who wanted to book my service, but made another choice purely based on price. I am a believer that every experience is an opportunity for growth. I also feel that every bride should do what they feel is best. What I want to share with brides, however, (no matter what vendors they choose) is be cautious about the “deals” you accept during your planning process. As the old saying goes, the ‘devil is in the details.’ Any newlywed will happily give you an earful about what they would have done differently in hindsight. When a deal or discount works, it’s awesome. When it doesn’t it can wreak havoc on on your post wedding bliss for months. If this is your first wedding, it’s challenging to know how everything will actually unfold until the day of and the weeks following your wedding. Scary, but true. It is very easy to balk at vendor prices. Even I have been shocked at what some brides have paid for products and services. Although nothing in life is guaranteed, generally when you pay a higher price point for a service or a product it (usually) directly correlates to a proven track record of success and satisfaction with said product or service. In other words, you get what you pay for. I understand budgets vary from couple to couple. However, I would advice any couple planning a wedding to first create a budget, second, fully understand the terms and services you’ve agreed to with your service providers especially if they include a discount, promotion, or credit. Third, assume nothing, and lastly get it in writing.

DAILY LESSONS, RENTALS, & CUSTOM SUP SAFARIS AT FREEDOM CITY SURF BOARD SHOP!

A Family Who Found Their Way to the Water Freedom City Surf Board Shop and Grill started in 2010 as SUP Adventure Fitness with owners Pi Presto, her son Q Everest, and life partner Bill Ruggiero. Bill, a professional ice hockey goaltender, Q, a youth hockey goalie, and Pi, a classical dancer, fitness trainer, and mom of three, decided to take a break from the ‘cold’ and head to St Croix, USVI to learn permaculture at Creque Dam Farm (now Ridge to Reef Farm). Nine years ago, Pi was a flight attendant and first read about Stand Up Paddle boarding in a magazine left behind by a passenger. She thought it would be a great off-season training tool for ice hockey players, working their core, balance, and endurance and getting them out of the gym in the summer months. With only a backpack apiece and with SUP on the back burner, Pi, Bill, & Q made their journey to the St. Croix farm where their adventure begins. Even while homeschooling Q, working several restaurants on the West End and Bill doing construction up on the farm and all three cooking, they always found there way to the water. It wasn’t long before all three

Board Shop & Beach Grill, Frederiksted Beach.

decided to ‘go all the way’ and invest in 10 SUP and start SUP Adventure Fitness. First, Pi found that the shack next to the old Sand Bar in Frederiksted was for rent and, a month later, that the restaurant itself was for rent. Pi, and sister Nikki’s grandmother Rose left them a small ‘nest egg’ that they used to invest in the business, becoming partners. Everyone worked around the clock to get the business off the ground, making friends with the community, the core to their success today. Freedom City Surf Board Shop & Beach Grill

went through some name changes along the way and now incorporates Teres Veho Stand Up Paddle Adventures into the mix. Catering to island youth, they sponsor local SUP racers and skateboarders and offer Stand Up Paddle lessons and a half pipe for community skate board use. Pi and Bill offer a Full Moon SUP Party and Weekend Warrior Sup Races for all levels— part of the Produce Cup that precedes the Coconut Cup SUP Festival, May 22-35, 2015. SUP Adventure Fitness X training is also offered every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 8:30 am at Freedom City Surf, and Fridays 8:30 am Chaney Bay Beach Resort. The Board Shop is an all-in-one outfitter for a day on the water that offers Ogies Famous Authentic Hawaiian Shave Ice. The Beach Grill is the perfect place to enjoy some great homemade nachos and delicious frozen concoctions. He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. Sunday, January 11th, 2015, marks the 11th year of the St. Croix Dolphins Swim Team’s Annual Sea Swim, a one-mile swim with something for everyone, this event is open to swimmers of all ages and abilities. The race begins with a leap from the Frederiksted Pier into the calm, crystal blue waters of St. Croix’s west end and finishes with a barbeque and awards at Rainbow Beach. Last year, the race included over 150 swimmers from ages 7 to 70, tri-athletes, college swim teams, the Dolphins Swim Team, members of the Puerto Rican National Team, and community members looking for something fun to do on a Sunday morning. The swim begins at 11:00am. There are ten different age categories, including a fin/snorkel category, and a special prize for the fastest parent/child teams. Swimmers last year took between 22 minutes and one hour to complete the event. Kayakers will be in the water to ensure safety. “The Frederiksted waters are perfect for an ocean swim – beautiful water and calm seas. The swim is the highlight of

ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Christiansted Visitors Bureau is located in Government House on Queen Cross Street; open weekdays. The Frederiksted Visitor’s Bureau is located in a Strand Street courtyard near the Pier; open week-

days & cruise-ship days. A Christiansted National Historic Site Visitor’s Orientation Center is located at Scale House on King Street at the Wharf. The seasoned traveler doesn’t take chances. Lock your car, don’t wear valuable jewelry wandering in town, keep to the main areas. CURRENCY & BANKING. We use the US dollar and credit cards are accepted everywhere. First Bank (all branches), M – Th, 8:30 am – 4 pm, F, 8:30 am – 5 pm, Sat, 9 am – 1 pm (SI and Fsted); Banco Popular Sunny Isle, M – F, 8:30 am – 4 pm, Sat, 9 am – 1 pm, Banco Popular Orange Grove, M – F, 8 am – 4 pm; Scotia Bank Sunny Isle, M – W, 8:30 – 3:30, Th – F, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. See maps for bank and ATM locations. TAXES. No sales tax but a 10% government tax is applied to hotel rooms. COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores plus Radio Shack for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .49 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .33 cents, international rates are $1.10 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. Always Remember To Drive Left! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Fort Christiansvaern and a large public lot with fees just west of town on Strand and King Cross Streets. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (34 & 35) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Rejsemål St. Croix PRAKTISKE OPLYSNINGER OM US VIRGIN ISLANDS

John Connor

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 63. www.stcroix thisweek .com

Befolk-ningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Kontaktnumre i Nødstilfælde. Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrel of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available. Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean

in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (17551871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Take two tours—“Free Gut” is the freed black neighborhood of Christiansted established by the Danish in 1748 and “Gallows Bay” is the fishing community that sustained Christiansted’s fish market for more than two centuries. Free Gut, $35., Gallows Bay, $15. Make Reservations with Eastern National Bookstore at the Scale House. 340-719-4091 December 2014June / January / July 2015 2014 • Page 57

SUNSET JAZZ IN FREDERIKSTED DECEMBER 19 & JANUARY 16! Getting West St. Croix’ West End offers beautiful sandy, calm beaches, great snorkeling and wreck or pier diving, spectacular sunsets, and the lush subtropical forest. You can reach Frederiksted with its quaint, historic town architecture in several ways. The four-lane Melvin Evans Highway is your speediest route, if you are coming from the east. Most drivers take Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), which also takes you to the St. George Village Botanical Garden, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and Whim Plantation Museum, all just off the Queen Mary Highway.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800’s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Visitors’ Bureau, normally located here, has been temporarily moved to an upstairs location in the courtyard of a nearby building on Strand Street. The Freedom Fountain facing the pier was installed for the Emancipation 150th anniversary celebration. In a historic light blue building down a block is the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House on Strand Street and Apothecary Hall on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets preserve the Frederiksted architecture of that time. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Friedensberg Moravian Church, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The newly restored Old Danish School on Hospital Street and Market Street is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, built in 1803. The Market Place is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted. There are ATMs at the Scotiabank and First Bank locations on Strand Street. After hours, swipe your card at the door to get inside. The Frederiksted waterfront is home to Sunset Jazz concerts, held the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Take Creque Dam Road (Route 58) through scenic valleys and under towering trees. This road is passable by car, but narrow and a bit rough. The rainforest can be explored by car, 4 WD (unpaved West Scenic Road can be impassable after heavy rains) or on horseback. Among area attractions are the Lawaetz Family Museum and lovely gardens at Estate Little La Grange, the impressive Estate Mt. St. Croix’s National Parks

Salt River Bay National Historical Park & Ecological Preserve Part 2 in a series Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve (NHP&EP) is on the north coast of the island of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). St. Croix is the largest of our four islands that comprise the USVI that include St. John, St. Thomas, and Water Island. The USVI part of the Lesser Antilles and lie on the boundary between the Greater and Lesser Antilles island chain of the Caribbean, making this an important crossroad in the settlement and colonial history of the New World. Salt River Bay, a rich and diverse natural estuarine ecosystem, has been the site of human habitation for 2000 years. The park preserves, protects, studies, and interprets internationally significant historical and cultural sites that encompass millennia of human use of the diverse tropical, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems that comprise the Salt River watershed. On February 24, 1992, Public Law 102-247 established Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve as a national park unit. The enabling legislation for the park framed a co-management structure between the Government of the Virgin Islands and the National Park Service (NPS). The park’s legislated boundary protects 1,015 acres, which are the responsibility of the Government of the Virgin Islands of the United States and the NPS. The legislated boundary encompasses lands along both sides of Salt River Bay, the bay itself, and extends into the open ocean to include coral reefs and portions of a submarine canyon. The park is a complex mosaic of federally, territorially, and privately owned property as well as waters under territorial jurisdiction within the park’s boundary. This park uses a congressionally mandated collaborative management strategy between NPS and the Department of Planning and Natural Resources of the Government of the Virgin Islands of the United States. The primary goal of Salt River Bay’s enabling legislation was to protect its critical cultural resources and the ecosystem that contributed to human activity in the bay. The archeological resources at Salt River Bay NHP&EP span all major periods of human habitation in the USVI from the Arawak language groups, the first Amerindian settlers, through European contact and colonial activity. All of these visitors were drawn to Salt River Bay’s safe natural harbor and dynamic coastal habitats and their resources that represent St. Croix’s diverse ecology. Here an upland watershed feeds into a bay fringed with mangrove forests and protected by coral reefs. These unique ecosystems continue to be dramatically influenced by human habitation and have been the sites of agricultural production, settlement and international commerce. The park holds unparalleled opportunities for scholarly research into the complete history of the Caribbean. www.stcroix thisweek .com www.stcroix thisweek .com

More specifically, Salt River Bay NHP&EP protects the site of the only known Amerindian ceremonial stone-lined ball court in the Lesser Antilles. The ball court was established by Eastern Taino Amerindians with strong cultural ties to Puerto Rico and the

Lesser Antilles. The site was largely excavated in the 1920s and most of the remains are in the National Museum in Denmark. The park also boasts the first documented visit by Christopher Columbus’s crew on United States soil. On November 14, 1493, during Columbus’s second voyage, his expeditionary force landed at Salt River Bay, resulting in the earliest recorded armed resistance by Amerindians to European colonization. This same site is where Fort Salé guards the Salt River Bay. The fort was constructed in 1641 as a collaboration between the Dutch, French and English, representing one of the earliest and few surviving examples of European earthen fortifications in the New World. Salt River Bay NHP&EP’s watershed flows into open marine conditions uniquely positioned on the edge of a world-class submarine canyon that empties into the 3-mile-deep basin, Virgin Islands Trough, to the north of St. Croix. From the terrestrial uplands to the canyon’s depth the park protects

David Berg

a complete ridge-to-reef ecosystem that provides habitat and sustains rare, threatened, and endangered plant and wildlife species on the island of St. Croix. For the past 15 years the manmade Mangrove Lagoon on the park’s east side has been known for its exceptional bioluminescence phenomenon. By Fall 2015 a small 300-squarefoot educational center will be available for K-12 educators to use on the park’s east side. The co-management of Salt River Bay NHP&EP is collaborative, using the federal government, the USVI government, and the wider Virgin Islands community to provide stewardship, research, and understanding of the park’s diverse resources. From November 14 - June 1, the NPS operates a Visitor’s Center above Columbus Landing on the park’s west side. The building is open two days a week, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, and by appointment.

MOVING HERE Dream – Build – Retire More vacationers every year find a way to move to “America’s Paradise.” They like that we are part of the US, have no state taxes, enjoy great year-round climate and are surrounded by beautiful beaches and turquoise water. Newcomers learn the traditions of culture and history on the island. Being home to dozens of community organizations, with volunteer opportunities, and annual events to attend, it’s easy to get involved quickly and form new friendships. St. Croix is an ideal second home for some and a wonderful year-round residence for others. Houses and condos are available for rent or purchase along with undeveloped land for those who want to build. Job openings exist in many fields and we have an Economic Development Commission (EDC) program that offers tax incentives for business owners who qualify. St. Croix retains a relaxing pace even though cosmopolitan in many ways. We say, “ Good Morning” before beginning a conversation, say “no problem” and mean it, and celebrate lots of holidays without commercializing them. A few challenges might be not being able to find your favorite brand all the time, finding water scarce during dry spells (although you can buy it by the truckload), and erratic electricity (making generators popular along with the use of solar panels).

A Week in the Life… by Amy Land-de-Wilde

As I was scanning back through this last

week on St. Croix, I was reminded how much there is to see and do on our tiny island in the middle of the deep blue Caribbean. And just to remind you, St. Croix is totally surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and doesn’t have the rougher waters of the Atlantic touching our shores. On a drive I take every day, I’m greeted by a glorious male peacock or two grazing in a grassy area for all to admire. I have to say that no matter how many times I drive by, I still smile each and every time. The peacock owners used to have an emu, too. He once escaped and was galumphing toward one of our loveliest neighborhoods adjacent to a golf course. The juxtaposition of “emu” to “manicured golf course” was hilarious. Because of the nature of small-island living, we all knew who to call to come and corral the emu. Talk about putting a smile on your face! (Actually, that was more like a guffaw!) This week, I joined friends (all of us transplanted from the States) on their sailboat at sunset. What I adore about these impromptu trips is that they seem to bring people together who’ve seen each other only to nod and say “hi”, but who may not know each other so well. By the time you ease up to the mooring, you’ve made fast friends. Your circle is ever-expanding, here on St. Croix. It’s an easy place to decide to pop out to a restaurant alone or whip up a casual last-minute dinner with friends bringing part of the meal. And you make friends easily here!

Evenings often include moments outside watching the sun drop into the water and hoping for that split-second green flash--always a thrill. The sunsets here are spectacular and these events have smart phones popping up skyward with the inevitable posting to one’s favorite social media site. On the boat the other night, we all agreed that the beauty of our St. Croix and the friends we’ve made here root us, and that our lives have all changed for the better as a result of making this island our home. On another night this week, I reunited with snowbirds just back to their winter home. This is how we full-timers track the seasons….not by leaves changing or colder weather. Nope…. always about 85 and sunny here with palm fronds swaying in the tradewinds. We look forward to colder weather up north so we can see our friends again and make new ones. St. Croix is a low-key island. We have our share of celebrities and they want to be low-key as well. I always tell people interested in moving here or spending more time here that St. Croix isn’t as socially stratified as life in many parts of the U.S. You come to really know people who’ve done very important things with their lives as well as others with perhaps a smaller footprint and much different from yourself. All have so much to offer and share. Our lives here are enhanced by the rich diversity of our islanders. If this seems like a week you’d like to have, we at Coldwell Banker St. Croix Realty would love to help you get settled more quickly and make the learning curve of our St. Croix seamless.

Come and stay for a short or long time. Most of us wouldn’t live anywhere else!
