Good Day and welcome to the United States Virgin Islands! Our people welcome you. We are a unique place to visit with a variety of islands: St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and dozens of small cays and islets. Each island is unique. Each offers distinct and memorable experiences. St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.

Christmas on St. Croix!

T

he Annual Crucian Christmas Festival on St. Croix this year will be an important stress reliever following Hurricanes Irma and Maria’s visits in September as many continue or follow-up with personal and business recovery efforts across the island. As entertainment relief, Governor Mapp announced that the Crucian Christmas Festival, planned for December 22 – January 6, will, for the first time, include Crucian Christmas Festival nights in St. Thomas as well as St. John and will feature a diverse selection of music each night. This year is the 65th Anniversary of the festival, named “We Gah’ Festival Fever!” It became an annual event in 1952 with the revival of old holiday traditions transformed into a modern event. Tradition plays a large role in the Virgin Islands and, back in former days of slavery, Christmas and Easter were the only times the enslaved population were given time off. That called for celebration, which consisted of dressing up in costumes, masquerading, and making calls at other plantations, and parading through the streets of the towns, where dancing and merrymaking marked these gatherings. But with religious life playing a large role, churchgoing to

w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

celebrate the birth of Christ was and remains a major seasonal activity. The Crucian Christmas Festival has become more and more organized each year and the Crucian Christmas Festival Committee has included additional events each year making it now a month-long extravaganza. Highlighting St. Croix’s traditions, history, crafts, food, and drinks, it begins in December and ends with the Three Kings Parade in January. But preparations for the celebrations and elaborate parade costumes begin months ahead. Starting with a prince and princess pageant, later a competition for the queen title, a calypso monarch singing contest for adults and youngsters, early morning tramps, or “Jouvert,” into the towns, a band competition and musical theme selection all draw crowds to their venues, and the festival village and amusement park with booths offering traditional food and drink, cultural performances and trinkets for sale continue for two weeks. We will see a new genre of music being added to the Festival Village concerts this year: Gospel, according to the Governor.

Nothing equals the excitement of the parades at the end of the festivities (held in Frederiksted because of its wide streets)—first the delightful children’s parade, where steel pan orchestras from schools and churches and groups of majorette twirlers vie for being the favorite of the crowds along the King Street route in Frederiksted. The following day, the Three Kings Day adult parade is the grand finale, featuring over a hundred troupes, floats, and individual entries—an extravaganza to the beat of loud music, bodies swaying, fantastic costumes, pageantry and pulsating energy and merriment, starting before noon and continuing until after dark. Large crowds line the parade route, and vendors of food and drink are interspersed. Check our Events Calendar on Pg 4 for highlight events and/or check Facebook or the website below for the full schedule of dates, times, and locations.

St. Croix was spared by Irma but our neighbors to the North, St. Thomas, St. John, and the BVIs didn’t fare too well. Then, St. Croix got hit with Maria! When adversity strikes, we come together.

At Crucian Gold, we felt the need to use our tools and resources to make a meaningful contribution and help with the ongoing hurricane relief efforts. We designed a jewelry collection that speaks to the strength and togetherness of our communities… The VI STRONG Collection. 100% of the sales proceeds will be donated to the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands’ Fund for the Virgin Islands, and the St. Croix Foundation’s VI CARE (Caribbean Assistance and Relief Effort) Fund.

“I have been in the restaurant business since I was 14 years old,” says owner and chef Dennis Giancontiere of the Cultured Pelican. Started as a dishwasher and busboy and worked the last 47 years in front and back of the house. My true passion is the kitchen.” From Long Island, New York, he has been cooking on St. Croix for nearly 30 years now. Dennis has been at the Coakley Bay Condos location since 1994 but first opened a small restaurant in Christiansted, on Queen Cross Street in 1991. The setting at Coakley Bay is truly tropical; see a photo of the spectacular view on the previous page! Dennis explains that “the menu is inspired by my mother and grandmother with 95% of the items being what we had at the dinner table my whole life.” All selections on the menu are prepared fresh daily from the finest ingredients available. Even though its mostly his family’s enduring recipes, Dennis has added his own imaginative flair. Pasta and veal dishes are among his favorites and he loves working with local produce and local catch. The menu can change but look for specials like Roasted Garlic and Baked Brie, Stuffed Bell Peppers, Crab Stuffed Wahoo, Rigatoni Napolitan, Mozzarella En Carrozza, Eggplant Rollitini, Mussels Marinara or Au Vin Blanc, Calamari, Specialty Pizzas, Calzones, soups, salads, pastas, veal, meatballs, Italian sausage, shrimp, chicken, and fresh catch dishes. ISLAND VIBES IN BRUSH STROKES!

Cover Story: Artist Sophia Phillip “I was born in Frederiksted and raised in Christiansted on this beautiful island of St. Croix to Charles Ible Phillip and Naomi Maynard Julien. I was a middle child, with one sister and one brother, Sophia Phillip. and attended Juanita Gardine Elementary School. As a child in Headstart, I loved art. I enjoyed painting and thought learning about colors was fascinating. In elementary school, I remember my art teacher gave us a color wheel in the 5th grade; I was the only one that got an A in that class. But it wasn’t until I was seven that I realized that I had an artistic ability and expressed it through sketching and painting. My art teachers, Ms. Papki and Dr. Cokeman, were my biggest influencers. I learned to love acrylics and watercolors!

beautiful blue water, the lovely local flowers, and sugar mills. I have a great love for Moko Jumbies and enjoy painting them (see January cover). I also love painting sugar mills but, most of all, I enjoy painting hibiscus flowers (see December cover). The best thing I like about painting is the peaceful feeling it brings me to meditate and feel free.

Lawaetz Family Museum,.

Sunset Palms.

I attended high school in Portsmouth, VA and moved to Puerto Rico where I resided for couple years and taught African drumming and dancing. Next, I attended the Art Institute in Pittsburgh, PA where I did a lot of watercolor painting and ceramic sculptures. When I met my husband, I moved to Florida for about seven years as a substitute teacher at the Forest Elementary School teaching art to kindergarten students and supporting children in need during learning projects or independent activities such as computer support, art workshops, drawing and painting. I remember being praised for constructing a world map to scale, 6’ x 10’, displayed at the school for students, teachers, parents, and administrators. Finally, it came time to come back to St. Croix and pursue my artwork here. It means a lot to me when I can sit and paint the scenery of the island now, the Page 36 • December 2017 / January 2018

Mr. Rooster.

My artwork, prints, and greeting cards can be seen at Sweet Lime Furnishings, The Blue Mutt, Divi Carina Bay Resort, The Museum Store at the St. George Village Botanical Garden, The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, the Whim Museum Gift Shop, Chenay Bay Resort, and The Frame Up. I will be doing showings this coming season and take appointments. I’m currently working on some Christmas art for this season. Special thanks goes out to Blue Mutt and Sweet Lime Furnishings for their support and encouragement! When I’m not painting, I do enjoy tie-dyeing and have been tie-dyeing for 20 years. I have sold my tie-dye clothing to cruise ship passengers in St. John and St. Thomas. If you like tie-dye techniques, let me know if you are interested in one of my workshops. I also enjoy swimming, hiking and just plain walking and, of course, my African dancing and drumming. Making local crafts, working with acrylics and local seeds is something else I like to do. I love the Crucian Christmas traditions of parades, and listening to Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights that always bring back memories of my childhood. Also, eating lots of local food and pastries and can’t forget the guavaberry rum! I thank the good Lord that my family and I made it safely through the storms in September. We had plenty of water, but that was it.”

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!

Denmark Brings Generous Assistance to Our Islands by Nina York The early months of 2017 brought many important events to St. Croix marking the 100th Anniversary of the acquisition of what was then known as the Danish West Indies – St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix – by the United States to become the U. S. Virgin Islands. Numerous projects and commemorations were undertaken, and the day of the actual Transfer, March 31, brought a large number of visitors, among them Danish-American groups. In June, a Danish West Indies Festival was held in Denmark with wide and festive celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Danish West Indian Society, a friendship organization started by Danes that had been stationed in the islands as military and administrative personnel.

Page 38 • December 2017 / January 2018

We all looked at 2017 as a banner year and saw a tremendous interest in the Danish media, and a mounting recognition of the less than proud Danish government legacy of having endorsed and actively carried out slavery on our islands that brought great wealth to the mother country. We felt that progress had been made, not least by the release of the 5 million documents in Danish archives dealing with the Danish West Indies, accessible by anyone with access to the Internet, with many of the files translated into English. Today we must realize that 2017 may not be chiefly remembered for those cultural accomplishments but instead for the two hurricanes, Irma and Maria, with Irma causing huge destruction on St. John and St. Thomas, and later hitting Florida, and Maria less than two weeks later causing devastation on St. Croix, followed by even worse in Puerto Rico. Rebuilding is under way, and progress is notable, thanks to a large workforce from the United States assisting local workers in the various fields – reconstruction, power and communications restoration, damage claims, health workers, debris cleanup. These workers replace the normal flow of pleasure-seeking visitors, among whom we usually have large numbers of Danes. We will be seeing, and have already seen, a number of Danes whose mission in coming here, from the Denmark Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), became to provide aid by cleaning up the St. Croix Educational Complex in mid-island to allow the large facility, that had been used as a shelter for hurricane victims during and after the storms, to be ready for the students as the school year was starting. Other Danes are also coming, including the traveling youth group that regularly visits us, and a collection has been taken up by the Danish West Indian Society to assist institutions with Danish ties like The Queen Louise Home for Children and the Carl & Marie Lawaetz Museum, where Danish volunteers will also be helping with restoration efforts. We appreciate this help and hope they will be given a warm welcome.

Hans Lawaetz, left, President of the St. Croix Friends of Denmark with Erik Breum-Christensen, Major (Civil Protection), Danish Emergency Management Agency (DEMA).

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!

Welcome Back!

As I write this column, St. Croix is in the beginning stages of recovery after suffering a devastating blow from Hurricane Maria. By the time you read this, the recovery efforts will still be ongoing and more and more progress will be evident. The effects of this storm will be felt for many months and years to come. The Virgin Islands wedding industry and tourism are deeply intertwined, with tourists being the lifeblood of our economy. Thus, even though storms like Hurricane Maria are not good for business, as a resident and business owner, I have witnessed many positive changes. In Christiansted and Frederiksted, restaurants, shops, and other businesses are abuzz! It is wonderful, familiar, and comforting to see and hear this news with everyday bringing something new to celebrate! I want to personally invite perspective brides and grooms back to St. Croix and the US Virgin Islands; it is quite safe to plan your wedding here. As a community, we are strong but we would like to change any public perception that the devastation we endured is permanent. It is not. On the contrary, St. Croix is reclaiming herself. St. Croix is green again. If you are planning a beach wedding, we have beaches that remain pristine and beautiful. There are hotels and villas open, fully functional and ready to serve. There are several well-qualified wedding vendors who are ready to focus their attention on a happy event, like your wedding! As you begin planning, I would recommend researching and reaching out to local photographers and wedding planners of interest to help you map out your Post Hurricane Maria wedding details. A local photographer can best help navigate how, where, and when your photos should be taken for the best results. And a wedding planner can make connections on the ground and perform the footwork needed to make your wedding day a success. Welcome back to St. Croix and Happy Planning!

I tell them that kayaking the Bioluminescent Bay is at the top of the list,” says co-owner, Ty McRae! BushTribe Eco Adventures takes the extra steps for you to experience it to the fullest. Their guides are fun, vivacious, and are well-informed in local flora, fauna, and history and their tours are focused on combining adventure, education, and cultural knowledge in a relaxed and entertaining format. Smaller more private groups allow guests to get more one-on-one with their guides. They are happy, however, to privatize bigger groups, like large families, wedding parties, and school groups. Teroro II, a 42’ trimaran, is the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River and chartered by Captain Heinz. Carl followed his father’s passion, after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years, and now has is own boat Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. DIVE EXPERIENCE — Diving St. Croix for 34 years Michelle Pugh, a 39-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Michelle was also given the SBDC and Congressional Award for Entrepreneurial Success for Dive Experience. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 29 years. He knows the reefs like the back of his hand. His videos are a favorite souvenir! Skeeter, the dog, loves the dive boat and swimming with the divers. Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, is the only dive center owner that actually dives most everyday—guiding lots of customers

by request. While developing the dive mooring sites, she has explored most St Croix reefs and walls. Michelle has also traveled the world just to dive—like the East coast of the US from Florida to Rhode Island, the West coast from Canada to Mexico, The Red Sea, Australia, Solomon IsSusan Wall lands, Borneo, Philippines, the Antarctic, and most of the Caribbean Islands. And, I recently returned from the Galapagos Islands! Dive Experience is St Croix’s first dive operator and the first PADI 5-star IDC center. They teach diving from novice to professional instructors. Located at Kings Alley on the boardwalk, their USCG-licensed dive boat is steps away on the dock. The full-service center features basic snorkel equipment to recreational and professional dive gear from Aqualung (US Divers) plus hats, towels, tees, Trudi Gilliam fish art and the largest Reef sandal selection on island. “With years in the business and my experience over time, I’d can say that Dive Experience is simply the best!” Advertisement

Always Remember To Drive Left! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (34 & 35) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour!

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Lås bilen, gå ikke med værdifulde smykker i byen, og hold dig til de befolkede områder.

Armageddon — This is a deep dive that is the wreckage of the original Frederiksted pier that was dismantled in 1990 to build the present day pier. Tons of fish can be seen here along with an occasional Seahorse. 18. Rainbow Reef — A shallow reef filled with all the Tropicals in the book! Great place for Eels, Arrow Cre ledges. Out in deeper water you will find the area for wreck.

THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held. NPS 2nd Thursday Lectures held here.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in63 Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

WITH A SHOW OF STRENGTH, COURAGE, GRIT, AND RESILENCE Trees and flowers are coming back. Birds, lizards, and deer are back. Flowers are in bloom. The sun is out (most days). Christmas winds are on their way. Our power and comfort zones will return! Let us be inspired and show our gratitude for all the inside and outside help and support we have received after the September Storms (who shall remain nameless) allowing for a morale booster and a recovery that you could actually see and feel. Gratitude turns what we have into enough (for the moment). Forecast: A new Opportunity. We will survive the unthinkable and shine through. Life is too short to not get back into the running asap! Here’s to our beautiful island. Rough around the edges? Maybe, but we haven’t lost our charm, our beautiful views, our history, and our culture as seen below.

Meteor Shower, perhaps the best of all meteor showers, reaches its maximum and may produce up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour.

About fifty miles above the Earth, walnut size pieces of dust and ice are passing through the air so quickly that they burn up and you see a flash of light, a shooting star or meteor. The flash happens so quickly that if you say to a friend “look over there”, by the time they look the flash will be gone. On any clear night you can see several shooting stars or meteors per hour. At the time of a meteor shower you can see many, many more. The best time to look for meteor is between midnight and dawn.

Every year at this time people ask astronomers if they know what was the star of stars, the star which lead the Wise Men to Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus? Long ago people thought of everything that they saw in the night sky as a “star”. Thus, the planets, the “fixed” stars, meteors, comets, etc. all were “stars”. So what might have been “The Star”? Meteors or shooting stars happen so quickly that if you see one, by the time you tell your friends to look, the flash will be gone. Certainly a meteor did not send the Wise Men to Bethlehem. Comets were well known, but were considered omens of bad tidings and thus a comet would not send the Wise Men in

December 21st is the Solstice. The North Pole of the earth will be away from the Sun, which will have reached its southernmost position in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. This is the first day of winter (winter solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of summer (summer solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere.

search of a great king. The fixed stars do not change from year to year, so they would not account for the search. For time to time a star may “explode” as a nova or supernova, and for a short time may even become visible in the daytime. But, our records show no “guest star” at the time of Christ’s birth. The Wise Men followed the motions of the planets as these “wandering stars” moved against the background of fixed stars, for they believed that the motions of these wandering stars could foretell the future. With their knowledge of the motions of the heavens they could calculate that Jupiter and Saturn would pass each other three times and then be joined by Mars. But, what of Herod and his advisors, why did they not see this “star”? Most of the event would not be visible because it would happen during the day. But, the Wise Men knew that it was happening. They knew that this event would take place in Pisces, the Fish, a star group which for them was symbolic of the Hebrews. Thus some great event would take place in the land of the Hebrews and the Wise Men were off on their search. Was this meeting of the planets really “The Star”? Astronomers do not know; the final decision is yours.
