St. Croix is our largest island and we invite you to discover our historic towns; Christiansted and Frederiksted and discover the quaint shops and Danish Architecture. St Croix has wide open spaces, magnificent vistas and a unique culture. St. John is almost all National Park and perfectly preserved. It has sparkling turquoise bays and long, lazy beaches. “In respect to the evolution of ‘Negro History Week’ to ‘Negro History Month’ to ‘Black History Month’ (BHM), ‘African American History Month’ and beyond, historical research and archival collection efforts recognize the extensive achievements of people of African descent by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, respected as the Father of Black History Month. African American/ Black History Month and annual observances in February remain a source of great importance, often overlooked within education, media and social affairs. Research reveals Dr. Woodson’s mutually beneficial relationships, solidarity and collaborations with African/Black Caribbean activists, intellectuals and freedom fighters inclusive yet not limited to Hubert Harrison of St. Croix, Arturo Schomburg of Puerto Rico and Marcus Garvey of Jamaica, https://asalh.org/. Through the multidimensional lens of culture, heritage and identity, within the USVI, there are Black History Month observances that revisit AfRaKan Caribbean American and Danish influences of experiences that commonly gloss over the positive roles beyond enslavement of people of African ancestry within ‘Black History’ narratives...” From Educating on Black History Month and Centennial Perspectives in the VI Caribbean Americas (Davis Kahina: 2017) February is Black History Month. Tuna Poke Trio.

Say hello to Chris and Melissa Mitchell of fusions International Small Plates! “Chris grew up on St. Croix but joined the Air Force after high school and spent many years in the military, stationed in locations all around the world. This international exposure gave him a wide-ranging culinary scope which we combine into a truly unique dining experience here at Fusions,” says Melissa. “In 2008, we moved back here with our two children who are now grown. We worked for many other restaurants on the islands before deciding to do our own. Chris’ professional training was with the Culinary Institute of America. He is now chef and I am sous chef!” They prefer not to use the word “tapas” when defining their cuisine, simply because “tapas” is native to Spain, just as “mezze” is native to Greece and Turkey. Because every culture has their own name for small plates, they prefer to use the phrase “international small plates” to encompass all of the dishes that they serve, since their origins are from many places around the world. The Mitchells challenge diners to step ‘outside the box’ and suggest that everyone try every item on our menu at least once. Many of their offerings may be completely unfamiliar but they believe their small portions and handcrafted specialty items are perfect for culinary exploration or sharing a one-of-a-kind dining experience with friends. Menu items include amazing variety like Tuna Poke Trio, Grilled Grouper Sammy, Crab Rangoon, Bulgogi Lettuce Wraps, Port Carnitas Tostadas, Katsudo Bowl, Baby Back Ribs, Yakitori, plus Poutine, Corn Nuggets, Tostones with Mango Salsa, Southwestern Black Bean Burger, Mediterranean Trio plus Soups and Salads. Fusions on East End Road just outside of Christiansted, is open Wednesday to Sunday for Lunch, 11 am – 3 pm and Dinner, 5 – 10 pm. Join them for a comfortable, welcoming experience, whether dining alone, with that special someone, or as a group. Dine in, take out and or let them cater for your large or small group.

DISTINCTIVE LEGACY—ALTERNATIVE FORMATS, DIGITAL PAINTING!

Cover Story: Artist Roy Lawaetz

Roy Lawaetz, an artist of international renown was born in Frederiksted on St. Croix. He studied art starting in 1971 at the Provincetown Workshop, New York University’s Studio XII, the Art Students’ League and the Victor Candell Studio in New York City. He also studied at the Royal Roy Lawaetz. Diago Conde Danish Academy for the Fine Arts with Professor Richard Mortensen, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Although he is principally known as the Inventor/Theorist with his Modular Triangular System and the role of visionary he discovered in 2011 an additional inventive potential for doing painterly digital works on the new Apple iPad. This development, over the past six years, was enhanced by his writer narratives to each pixel oriented work by utilizing a stylus. Roy has created a distinctive legacy that is fashioned by his own originality, commentary, insight, with this new technology.

Mocko Jumbie Revelry.

Ever since his talent was discovered by Victor Candell in NYC, his artistic direction has all along been an inspiring and spectacular visual journey; his innovative legacy continues to astound many art institutions of the world and he receives numerous invitations to exhibit on a continual basis from many diverse countries across the globe. In 1996 he’d already experienced his international breakthrough when he exhibited at the 1996 Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil that included iconic artists such as Goya, Picasso, Klee, Munch. See www.bienal.org.br/exposicao.php?i=4323 In 2000, Roy published his definitive art theory book, The Modular Triangular System espousing alternative formats for painting on canvas. By combining triangles, prototype shapes could be obtained to offer alternatives from standard rectangles. Through this assimilation of cultural historical background influences, which were Caribbean derivative, Roy still exhibits his MTS art internationally by totally abandoning the fourcornered premise.

In 2015 he was invited to exhibit at the Musée Carrousel de Louve in Paris, France with these new creations. Wide spectator feedback to these digital works, that were now printed on special museum quality canvas generated much curiosity surrounding how these works were done, characterized the exhibition’s reception. The printing sizes generally range from “16 x 20” to much larger dimensions in custom made requirements.

Magic Diamond Tree.

The Modular Triangular System is an artist-led initiative to create and manifest an art theory reflecting cross-cultural heritage resources of the Caribbean. These works, which combine triangles, have a signature “designer attitude” to their formulation, one that is respectful of western influences but they integrally introduce Pre-Columbian tribal impulses inherent to the region.

For his MTS paintings he has received numerous awards, citations and medals of distinction for example the distinctive honor extended by Dominique Chapelle, Presidente, Grand Palais, Paris to be included as an artist member in France of the prestigious Societe des Artistes Independants. Founders of that Salon are Dubois-Pillet, Odilon Redon, Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac. And precursors number artists greats such as Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and St. Thomas’ Father of Impressionism, Camille Pissarro among many others. Roy actively writes art critique on many of his artist friends works across the globe. In 2016 his comprehensive essay, Highway to Stage-Studio about award winning German artist, Ulla Wobst, was included in the International Federation of Art Critics publication alongside established art critics, Karen Lappon, Christopher Rosewood, Timothy Warrington and Italian art historian, Elena Foschi.

Most recently, this January 20, 2018 Roy was awarded the Prize Leonardo Da Vinci---Universal Artist, at the prestigious Palace Borghese in Florence, Italy - this prestigious award is given to an artist, who stood out for his Over the many decades Roy lectured and exhibited artistic and stylistic research. This work, “Face of Value” Face of Value. his work widely in prestigious institutions worldwide. was featured in the magazine “Art International ContemHe has participated in exhibitions in museums such as porary Magazine”. It displayed a combination of his Modular Triangular the Castle Grimaldi, Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, the Grand Palais, Paris, and System and his digital creativity together in a flowering synthesis of styles. the Documenta Halle, Kassel, Germany, The Florence Biennale, Italy. As an highlight in May 2011, Roy exhibited at the Palacio Pignatelli (Salvador Dali Sculpture Museum) in Barcelona, Spain with the World Art Vision group and he also exhibited with the OpenArtCode group at the Prince Rainier 111 Auditorium in Monaco in October and a return participation with the Salon des Independants at the Grand Palais, Paris in November. Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!

Danes Encourage Future of Island Agriculture by Nina York In former days, St. Croix’s 84 square miles were, to a great extent devoted to agriculture, primarily the cultivation of sugar cane, presenting a very different scenery from what we see today. With recent storms last fall, having caused serious enough damage to the island’s farms (and those of several other Caribbean islands) to warrant the cancellation of our most popular annual event, the Agriculture and Food Fair, the local farmers are in a difficult position, in many cases being forced to start from scratch. A limited amount of assistance is available from the Federal Government, but we need more investment to restore this vital part of our economy. Many visitors remark on how green and fertile our land looks and note how much land is not being utilized for farming. They are not aware of the many challenges faced by the farmers, mainly the shallow water table that makes ample rainfall the determining factor in having a successful crop. In former days, rainfall was more plentiful, which can be seen on old maps showing numerous streams that no longer exist. Occasional droughts, such as what we experienced in 2015, can destroy the harvest and also affect animal husbandry such as our Senepol cattle. Working in the fields in the heat of the day is hard work and does not pay high wages. It requires devotion to the land on a full-time basis to succeed. We are fortunate to have a considerable number of devoted farmers whose produce can usually be found at the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market at La Reine intersection and at Little La Grange on Wednesdays. On page 32 in this publication, you will find listings of other operating farm product vendors. Typical yields range from a variety of lettuces, beans and peas, tomatoes, cucumber, squash and pumpkin, to herbs and honey. Fruit grown here includes banana, papaya, cantaloupe and honeydew as well as watermelon, coconut and avocado, but you can also occasionally find more exotic fruit like guava, egg-fruit, chocolate-fruit, dragon-fruit, and sugar-apple. A Danish landowner, Peter Oxholm Tillisch, of one of that country’s largest farms, is a descendant of a prominent surveyor and later Governor of the Danish West Indies in the late 18th century, Peter Lotharius Oxholm. A visit to his impressive Rosenfeldt estate on Sealand was part of last year’s Danish West Indies Festival, and has led to an initiative by a mini-consortium led by a young Danish graduate agriculture Peter Lotharius Oxholm. student Kristina Olsen to explore with Peter Oxholm Tillisch a Danish investment in promoting agriculture here as a showcase for visitors as well as an income producer for farmers. The timing seems right, and can be seen as yet another co-operative effort by Danes to help the islands that once brought great wealth to Denmark at the cost of many human lives. Kristina Olsen. Peter Oxholm Tillisch.

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!

The Parent Trap

Weddings offer a particular brand of stress. In addition to the event, you may also be managing multiple personalities, a myriad of issues, and what seems like high drama with the most challenging item on the ‘wedding stress menu’ is a difficult parent or parents. In my 12 years in the industry, I have seen many parent/child relationship dynamics and been privy to many “behind the scenes” conversations. Whether close or not, our parents affect our lives, for better or worse. Our feelings and our partner’s feelings about them (good or bad) are intensified as the wedding day draws near. The issues you face now will continue pass the wedding and grow as time goes on. Tips for navigating the parent trap: Build a united front. Beginning a marriage is like building a new kingdom. Together you make the ‘laws of the land,’ set the boundaries, create traditions, decide how and if you expand, and control its destiny. There’s no shortage of opinions from parents; even if they aren’t around, you’ll still manage to sing songs from your autographed copy of Mom and Dad’s Greatest Hits. When making decisions, stand together with respect and love. Your parents may not always agree, but they will hopefully respect them over time. Run interference. Some parent-child relationships produce drama due to fear and miscommunication. Help your partner out by being supportive and building a personal relationship with your future in-laws. Note the situations causing tension and remind your partner you’re in this together. Intercept phone calls or conversations, removing your partner from situations that may be harmful. Be a team, a united front, building an alliance with your in-laws and protecting your marriage at the same time. Be an adult. Transitioning from a parent-child dynamic to an adultto-adult dynamic can prove difficult and many easily revert to old patterns when tensions arise. Take responsibility for your feelings and any part you play in tensions with mom and dad. Apologize with sincerity and move on. Maintain respectful attitudes, show compassion, love, and keep your word—many of the same tools you will need to achieve success in your marriage!

N2theBlue Scuba Diving / Passion Down Under The staff at N2 the Blue loves to dive! Ask any one of them what they like to do on their day off and they will tell you without hesitation GO DIVING!!! When they are not leading dives, or teaching classes they are out diving. For this reason you will not find a group of divers who know the Frederiksted Pier and the calm leeward waters of St. Croix’s West End any better. They are all waiting to share their passion with you and make your dive trip one to remember. Divemaster and Instructor, Jenny Keith, has been teaching and leading dives in St. Croix for over a decade, and working in the dive industry for almost 40 years. A dive with Jenny is not something you will soon forget; as soon as you drop below the surface her passion for life under the sea becomes contagious. Divemaster Paul Silnes moved to St.

Kirk and his staff.

Croix from the windy city of Chicago and has been leading dives with N2 the Blue ever since. He especially loves to Night Dive at the pier and is down there diving it almost every day. He has made friends with the local octopus and if you do a night dive with Paul you will be in for a treat. Instructor Margi Erway traded in teaching

scuba in Colorado for the warm waters of St. Croix. Her calm, patient and informative teaching style make for a great experience! Captains and Instructors, Séan Arnold, Kiersten Fidao and Paul Vrabcak, have been working in the dive industry for many years. Although they all love to dive, they are most likely to be found behind the helm of the boat, always making your safety and enjoyment their #1 priority. Instructor Kirk Thompson traded in the corporate life and has never looked back. Not only is he passionate about diving but in 2016 he strapped on a Google trekker, hiked all over Island and was instrumental in helping Google update their mapping and street views of St. Croix. Check out N2theBlue on Facebook for pictures and videos of their daily dives!

Michelle Pugh, a 39-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Michelle was also given the SBDC and Congressional Award for Entrepreneurial Success for Dive Experience. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 29 years. He knows the reefs like the back of his hand. His videos are a favorite souvenir! Skeeter, the dog, loves the dive boat and swimming with the divers. Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, is the only dive center owner that actually dives most everyday—guiding lots of customers

by request. While developing the dive mooring sites, she has explored most St Croix reefs and walls. Michelle has also traveled the world just to dive—like the East coast of the US from Florida to Rhode Island, the West coast from Canada to Mexico, The Red Sea, Australia, Solomon IsSusan Wall lands, Borneo, Philippines, the Antarctic, and most of the Caribbean Islands. And, I recently returned from the Galapagos Islands! Dive Experience is St Croix’s first dive operator and the first PADI 5-star IDC center. They teach diving from novice to professional instructors. Located at Kings Alley on the boardwalk, their USCG-licensed dive boat is steps away on the dock. The full-service center features basic snorkel equipment to recreational and professional dive gear from Aqualung (US Divers) plus hats, towels, tees, Trudi Gilliam fish art and the largest Reef sandal selection on island. “With years in the business and my experience over time, I’d can say that Dive Experience is simply the best!” Advertisement

The Nature Conservancy Helps St. Croix Recover Nature Preserves and Cultural Heritage Sites Part 5 in The Nature Conservancy Series by Lucienne Cross, Communications Manager for Climate Adaptation

Just weeks after hurricanes pummeled the region, The Nature Conservancy, a global organization with nature preserves throughout the US, mobilized wildfire crews from over eight states for a recovery effort. The crew’s first stop was St. Croix, which had been hit by 175 mph winds and storm surge reaching up to nine feet. The island is home to a Conservancy preserve at Estate Little Princess, a 25-acre estate and historic sugar plantation originating in 1749, where tourists and locals can enjoy nature and tour Crucian history. On October 12th, the first fire crew arrived on an island almost entirely without power with a mission to reestablish access to the Estate and other locations in need of clearing and rebuilding. The teams also restored the trail to Jack and Isaac Bays, a Conservancy-owned preserve, and rebuilt stairs so visitors could once again access the beach. Crew members also flew to St. Thomas to clear debris, rebuild walkways and assist with recovery efforts at the worldfamous Magan’s Bay preserve. The third fire crew to reach St. Croix collaborated with the Department of Public Works to clear waterways, rivers and drains in order to reduce local flooding on roads and in residential areas. “Unfortunately, hurricanes are predicted to become worse and more frequent, and it’s the same with wildfires,” said Rachel Granberg, a Coastal Forest Land Steward from Alabama who was with the first crew. Like Rachel, all crew members are trained in emergency management and are accustomed to working in dangerous situations in order to protect ecosystems and lives in the Conservancy’s more than 400 nature preserves. Remaining positive through high heat and hard labor, the crews hoped to restore public safety and help ready the islands for tourist season, which will bring much needed economic recovery. In the US Virgin Islands, the Conservancy currently manages 730 acres of bays, rolling hills, steep valleys and beaches. They are home to hundreds of species, including corals, fishes, invertebrates, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Throughout the preserves, the crews propped up native trees that still had a chance to regrow and recover. Page 46 • February / March 2018

With repairs to the office roof and verandah ongoing, Conservancy staff have moved back into their space and continue to lead conservation activities on the island, including impressive coral restoration work and a sustainably-sourced sea food campaign, Reef Responsible. Thanks to the fire crews, the preserve is now on its way towards recovery, and the staff are continuing with ambitious plans to turn it into a leading coral conservation hub. The hub will attract scientists, students and visitors from around the world, with cutting-edge research programs such as a coral nursery, where healthy coral fragments are grown and then replanted onto vulnerable reefs.

“I’m ready for this renaissance!” said the Conservancy’s Coral Conservation Manager, Kemit-Amon Lewis. “Hurricanes Irma and Maria have set us back but have also provided opportunities for us to build with a fresh reminder that our world is changing and we must also adapt to be resilient. The hurricanes brought many communities together. This sense of togetherness is critical for us to rebuild our infrastructure and the same sense of togetherness will help us restore our coral reefs.” Science indicates that the Caribbean will continue to see an increase in severe weather, making this conservation work more important than ever. Coral reefs, for example, not only sustain healthy fish stocks, but they also protect islands from storm surge, flooding and erosion. The Conservancy is working throughout the Caribbean to prepare for and reduce vulnerability to extreme weather. This year, they also launched a four-year project to train Caribbean leaders to prioritize the protection of ecosystems, like reefs and mangroves, as a vital strategy for sustainable development and resilience in the face of climate change. The project, Resilient Islands, is a collaboration with the world’s leading disaster response organization, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour! w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Lås bilen, gå ikke med værdifulde smykker i byen, og hold dig til de befolkede områder.

St. Croix Dive Sites 19.

Tenth in a series of dive site descriptions.

Frederiksted Pier — One of St Croix’s most favorite dive locations. Best “muck diving” in the Caribbean! Look for Frog fish, Seahorses, Bat fish, Eels and many schools of fish. This is a shallow dive so you can get an hour or more dive time in.

20.

Swirling Reef of Death — This is a shallow reef area with lots of juvinile reef fish. Just like divng in an aquarium! If you want to go deeper, there is a nice slope to go down.

THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

P

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in63 Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

CENTENNIAL LEGACY PROJECT Breathing New Life into the Old Army Barracks By Apple Gidley

Ulla Lunn commented, “cherish the ruins”.

Despite Hurricanes IrMaria trying to destroy these Virgin Islands, trying to dampen spirits, and black-out homes, perseverance and resilience are winning and life is returning to normal.

Describing the history of this decaying relic, from the time it was the Danish army barracks to a military hospital in 1835, to 1961 when it became a high school and finally a police substation before being abandoned to asbestos and bush, Farrante said, “You can touch the life in every single brick in these buildings.” Gronningssaeter continued, “We cannot preserve all values at once. We have to have a focus. Something that makes you reflect on time and history.”

Much has been made of the destruction of the mahogany trees on St Croix - both by hurricane and chain saw. With the heightened awareness of their value as shade, beauty and utility, perhaps we should look to a viable long-term use of the timber now lying discarded. It was a theme taken up by Sergio Fox, an environmental and sustainable resource engineer, when speaking at a recent symposium in Christiansted. Why not use it in the proposed conservation of the Old Army Barracks? Hosted by Gerville Larsen, a Crucian architect well known for his vision for a Christiansted Town Plan, and Ulla Lunn, a Danish preservation architect representing BYFO, the Association of Historical Houses in Denmark, I learned of the progress made on The Centennial Legacy Project, which plans to stabilize, conserve and bring new life to the current eyesore on Hospital Street. It is a dramatic vision that will benefit all who live on these islands, and beyond. A school where Virgin Islanders could earn an associate’s degree in architecture before transferring to accredited institutions in Puerto Rico, the mainland, or Denmark. In keeping with its ideal of serving all segments of society, this venue would also teach building crafts - carpentry, metal work, brick building and so on using the old techniques that have proven, through many years and numerous hurricanes, to withstand harsh conditions. At the same time recognizing and incorporating modern methods and materials. The provisional name, The Center for Architecture and Built Heritage, will also (provisionally) have an auditorium, an archive room, a cafeteria and gardens all open to the public. A true venue for the preservation of Crucian culture. Visions don’t come cheap but with the $150,000 seed money from BYFO, matched by the VI Government, this joint venture can now start raising the $20M required to w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

View from above. Apple Gidley (top) The Old Barracks updated rendering.

But why, when so many things need funding, particularly after the devastation left by the 2017 hurricane season, should we put time, energy and money into, again in Hildegunn Gronningssaeter’s words, “a beautiful decaying structure returning to nature?” Because to not conserve and preserve the culture is to disown the heritage - the good and the bad. By moving forward with a project like this, which must be community driven and in collaboration with BYFO in Denmark, we are valuing the past, present and future a true Legacy Project.

Hildegunn Gronningssaeter & Felicia Farrante.

see both this project, and one on St Thomas, realized. Full funding must come from foundations, organizations and government in the US and Denmark. Some might remember the exhibition at The Blue Mutt in January 2017 showing designs drawn by students from Aarhus University after their visit to St Croix - and all of which inspired those interested in the conservation and restoration of Christiansted. A couple of weeks ago at the symposium, first held at balter (thank you, for the delicious appetizers), and subsequently at the Florence Williams Public Library, we were treated to a presentation of three designs drawn up by two young architects - Crucian, Felicia Farrante and Norwegian, Hildegunn Gronningssaeter. Their enthusiasm was contagious as they talked us through ideas ranging from safe traditional, to an elegant compromise of old converging into new, to a thrilling modern design that, to my layman’s eyes, made the most of the remains of the army barracks while giving Christiansted a brave new look. For a brave new enterprise. All the concepts, as

More prosaically, a well-preserved St Croix would help tap into an international market geared to heritage travel, and therefore tourism dollars. As the symposium came to an end, I was reminded of Gerville Larsen’s opening words, “People are the heart of the town.” By taking a decrepit ruin and turning it into a grand design built by Crucians for Crucians and any who would like to visit St Croix we acknowledge, as Senator Myron Jackson said, “Arts and culture are the framework of a community.” Let’s put the mahogany trees to good use. Store them, let them cure properly, then by the time funds have been raised for this exciting venture, those stately old trees will have come full circle - creating shade, beauty and utility. Updates will be forthcoming as The Legacy Project gains momentum and the community becomes involved in fundraising, planning and the realization of this joint VI / Danish vision. Apple Gidley is a contributing writer and the author of the novel “Fireburn” which can be found at Undercover Books, Eden South, The Blue Mutt, CMCA and Amazon.com. Februar y / March 2018 • Page 59

The hotel officially opened its doors in December for a soft opening. Construction of the swimming pool and grounds have been severely delayed due to hurricanes Irma and Maria but the first 12 rooms survived unscathed, looking quite lovely! “This wasn’t quite the grand opening that we originally planned for,” said Christopher “Topher” Swanson, co-owner of The Fred, “in a ‘Recovery Economy’ hotel rooms are in high demand, so once the water and power came back, we opened our doors and the response has been terrific!” Best of all, The Fred was recently featured in Caribbean Journal and Uncommon Caribbean, helping to get the word out that St. Croix is on a quick road to recovery. Book rooms at SleepWithFred.com or by calling 1.844.STX.USVI (789.8784). The Fred also launched a new Gift Shop with quirky souvenirs and gadgets for the experienced traveler. Keep your eyes on The Fred and look for the opening of the new bar, restaurant, and 10 more rooms! With all this, we’re hiring—visit JobsWithFred.com or stop by for an application.

An Interview with Jordan Stevens, owner. SCTW— What is the history of the spa and your interest in opening it? JS—As a Spa professional moving to St Croix, I knew that I wanted to open a Spa but didn’t realize how quickly this would happen! While building a clientele, I quickly saw that there was a market that needed to be served. JS— When I first came through the doors I felt like I was walking into ‘the secret garden!’ Kalima Center was the most beautiful, magical location in town! With the palm trees, hummingbirds, banana flowers and the sound of the fountain, we knew we had a special location and just needed to fill it with love. The Courtyard, a juice bar and fitness studio, hosts 15 classes weekly plus Weekend Workshops. Along with Yoga, there’s Barre Fitness, and Tantric Dance! The Courtyard is a magnet for interesting people! Stop by for breakfast or lunch with Shane Kuhlman! Stay current with our events and classes by checking our Facebook page, the CourtyardSTX. Temperature Drops vs Island Paradise by Amy Land-de-Wilde

February is not quite long enough in the year to get over the astonishment of writing 2018! We are so pleased to call St. Croix home, but at no time greater than when we’re hearing from so many who want to join us, sometimes as snowbirds or wannabe retirees on vacation and counting down the days, or from some who want to stow their snow boots and switch to flip flops full-time. When the temperature drops, people’s dreams turn to our island paradise. Its easy to feel at home here; we often pair off with you on the tennis courts, kayak tours, scuba dives, and on the golf courses. How many islands have more than one? Sports provide a great path into the community just like island events do. Many people choose to buy property on St. Croix because of this combination plus the sunshine, hypnotic seashore and strong sense of community. We have concerts under the stars, art shows galore, and a strong community theater and local culture scene. I’ve mentioned golf, tennis, kayaking and scuba diving, but how about horseback riding, paddle boarding, kite surfing and snorkeling? Everyone remarks about our great ‘foodie’ scene. The market has remained robust and we’re experiencing multiple offers on well-priced properties with attributes that Buyers are looking for— views, views, views! There is dwindling inventory, especially in sectors like waterfront condos, but prices haven’t yet climbed commensurately with the decrease, so it’s still a good time to buy at this value level. Many from the US, not yet ready to move fulltime, are curious about how their property will be managed when they’re not on St. Croix. There are plenty of options for rental and property management; you can be as involved as you want to be. Because we have a team devoted to this service, we can help with reservations, maintenance, income strategies, and a cleaning service. We would love to brag about our island in person and share the many wonderful reasons we’ve decided to make St. Croix our home. Please call us or drop in while you are on island. Broker Amy Land-de Wilde owns Coldwell Banker St. Croix Real Realty. She fell in love with the island on first sight and has lived here now for over 35 years. ow far away is the closest star from the Earth and what is the star’s name? If you know the name you probably have a good idea of the distance. Our star the Sun is closest and it is now about 91 million miles away. Okay, it was a trick question, most people do not think of the Sun as a star. But, you thought the Sun was 93 million miles away. The Earth is closest to the Sun in July (about 91 million miles) and farthest away in January, this year on January 3rd. Obviously, the Earth’s distance from the Sun does not cause the seasons. In fact, when it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere it is summer in the Southern! The night of January 3rd-4th is the maximum of the Quadrantid meteor shower. This year the bright moonlight will overpower all but the brightest shooting stars.

Jupiter and Mars are very close in the sky and rise in the east around 3:00 a.m. Wait an hour or so for them to climb higher in the sky and you’ll easily spot them. On January 3rd they will be at their closest, what astronomers call conjunction. They are only close as we see them from Earth. In fact, the two planets are hundreds of millions of miles apart. High in the eastern sky look for the seven bright stars that form Orion, the Hunter. Two bright stars mark his shoulders, two more his knees and three his belt. Orion is one of the few star groups that actually looks something like its namesake. According to legend, Orion was such a mighty hunter that he boasted that he could defeat any animal on Earth in battle. Suddenly a scorpion appeared, stung Orion on the foot and Orion died. However, Orion was such a great hunter that he was given immortality and placed in the heavens. The scorpion was also placed in the night sky, but you never seen Orion and the scorpion at the same time.

To the south of Orion is the brightest star in the night sky, Sirius. Sirius marks the tip of the nose of Canis Major, the Great Dog. Canis Major is one of two hunting dogs that accompany Orion. But, more typically of the constellations, it is hard to find a hunting dog by Sirius. To the northwest of the bright stars of Orion is another bright star, this one orange-red. This is Aldebaran, the red right eye of Taurus, the Bull. Taurus is one of the twelve constellations that form a belt that encircles the sky. We call this the zone of animals – or zodiac. Actually, one of the twelve constellations of the zodiac is not an animal – Libra, the Scales. To the east of Aldebaran and Taurus are the stars of Gemini, the Twins. The two brightest stars in Gemini, Castor and Pollux are about equal in brightness and each marks the head of one of the twin brothers. According to mythology, Castor and Pollux accompanied Jason in search of the Golden Fleece. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
