June & July Cultural Celebrations
by ChenziRa Davis Kahina, Director, VI Caribbean Cultural Center
VI Emancipation, 170th Anniversary THE RESTORATION OF BAMBOULA: A ST. CROIX EXPERIENCE
June was proclaimed National Caribbean American Heritage Month (CAHM) with a resolution passed by the US Congress in February, 2006. St. Croix and our Virgin Islands community have since been celebrating with annual events in recognition of this holiday month with congressional support by former VI Delegate to Congress, Dr. Donna M. Christian-Christiansen. A highlight of CAHM historic facts celebrates the life and achievements of William Alexander Leidesdorff—the first African-American millionaire entrepreneur born on St. Croix, Danish West Indies, now USVI. “The Virgin Islands of the United States of America, from inception, continues to contribute to the historic heritage narratives, honorable achievements, historic quests for self-determination, and liberties of the United States of America complemented by its unique transcultural representation of the people, culture, heritage, technology, and spirit of the Virgin Islands Caribbean Americas and beyond. The annual observance, in the June month, of National Caribbean American Heritage Month, is designated for observances, commemorations and celebrations for Virgin Islanders of Caribbean American descent to reaffirm their multicultural ties with the Caribbean America, respect their ancestral traditions and heritage of the Caribbean Americas, influenced by African, European, Indigenous, Asian, and other cultures, recognize their patriotic ties to the United States of America and, with their kin, throughout the Virgin Islands Caribbean Americas and beyond.” V.I. Executive Proclamation for National Caribbean American Heritage Month, 2015. The campaign to designate June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month was spearheaded by Dr. Claire Nelson, Founder and President of the Institute of Caribbean Studies. “Through the commemoration of this month,” she says, “we hope to ensure that America is reminded that its greatness lies in its diversity, with Caribbean immigrants, from founding father Alexander Hamilton, to journalist Malcolm Gladwell, who have shaped the American dream.” Recognition of prominent individual, ancestral, and living contributors to CaribbeanAmerican heritage and culture, of and within the Virgin Islands, will be featured in CAHM 2018 with US Presidential and VI Executive Proclamations. Check the Events Calendar, Page 5, for St. Croix’s June programs and events.

Per Ankh Bamboula Collections
Shared with recognition of Cultural Heritage Educators and Tradition Stewards of the Bamboula—Leona Brady Watson, MaryAnn Golden Christopher, Martina “Tini” Frett, Richard Frett, Clara Matthias and Uncle Amos (MTRIP); Jean Essannason, Wendy C. Coram, Isborne Fredericks, NswNebKaRa Christopher HerishetaPaHeru, Macislyn Bamboula Dancers & Drummers, Per Ankh Bamboula Dancers & Drummers, and all contributing positively to the preservation and restoration of Bamboula! “Bamboula is reflective of the international and Caribbean crossroad of communication, cultural heritage, healing sciences, traditional folklore, and linguistic shifts within Crucian culture that have influenced the social mileau of St. Croix, the Eastern Caribbean nations, and AfRaKa. Bamboula, as a sacred art and traditional form of communication amongst AfRaKan and Indigenous people’s culture, has been associated with dance and musical rhythms used by free and enslaved AfRaKans in St. Croix and abroad for uprisings, initiations, celebrations, and secret society gatherings. Bamboula provides a unique communicative art that has influenced visual, musical, artistic, and spiritual art form expressions that have endured centuries of misrepresentation and banning from the cultural history of St. Croix and the VI. It was used to restore strength, order and respect to the interconnection of our AfRaKan ancestry, rituals and spiritual living sciences beyond the colonial enslavement experiences of 18th to 20th century Danish West Indies society. In St. Croix, Bamboula gatherings commence with the men blowing the conch shell horns and playing “Ka” drums with “Katta” sticks and the call for the community to gather in the form of a circle with women and men dancing and singing, as onlookers engage and support the spiritual revival-type atmosphere by the exchange of call and response rhythms. Bamboula is a dance of sacred communication that, in its higher side, will assist the participants of the community with enacting more positive and uplifting spiritual and social developments for the community.” Bamboula Lives! From “The Restoration of Bamboula: A St. Croix Experiencee,” Eastern Caribbean Islands Culture Conference (ECICC).

“Join us and let time stand still as you relax and take in the sweeping view of Buck Island, the Caribbean breeze, the old-country aroma of apple and pecan pie baking in the oven, and the decadent flavors you’re about to experience,” says owner Lori Giordano. Operating multiple delis, restaurants, and markets during their 30 years combined experience on St. Croix, Lori and husband Pauli have built a reputation of excellence and expedience, and a knack for getting you what you need on the fly—from elegant wedding parties, last minute caterings, and Buck Island box lunches, to replacing the Thanksgiving turkey you’ve decided not to cook anymore! And they’ve worked hard for the VI Daily News Reader’s Poll recognition as ‘Best Restaurant,’ and ‘Best Variety Menu’ on St. Croix. Enjoy dinner all week and Brunch on Sunday on the terrace. As Captain Llew’s Charis dances through the reef, you’ll catch a wisp of Grandma Meme’s old country pastries fresh from the oven, woopie pies and magic squares, brownies and cookies as big as your head, and Taylor’s homemade cheesecakes plus ice cream. Lori bakes daily to fill our quaint specialty and necessity market that takes on the feel of the old Killington Lodge in Vermont, built by her grandfather, where she began her love of hospitality. The not-to-be-missed, all-you-can-eat lobster and prime rib Monday Night Seafood Bake, also features mussels and Pauli’s Alaskan Salmon and Snow Crab Legs, plus our local tuna, wahoo, snapper, lobster and conch! “Let us cater your next birthday or wedding, office or house party, boat trip or picnic. Call early to reserve your Holiday seats or take-away dinners and pies. Those of you who are already part of our family, we thank you for your love and support, and to our future family we look forward to meeting you.” — Pauli, Lori, Jedi, and Grandbabies

Island Art
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE!
Cover Story—Artist Barbara Gelardi Our Cover Artist made a permanent, full-time move to St. Croix in 1997 from Raleigh, N. Carolina. After completing two full restaurant mural projects, she was ready for some downtime in the Tropics!
of nature and the iconic African Lion. One home owner requested that her house become a large mural of “Alice in Wonderland,” including Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum at the front door and large painted rock of the White Rabbit!
Her neighbor/girlfriend was planning a summer stay on St. Croix with her Barbara Gelardi. Godmother who owned a popular restaurant on the Northshore called Picnics in Paradise. So, Barbara closed her Raleigh Studio and rented a condo on St. Croix’s Northshore to do the same.
As a full-time resident, Barbara has been drawn to community service on the island. With her first child, she began working in the local schools as an art teacher and fundraiser. Every October she and her husband take the month to put together St. Croix’s largest, eagerly anticipated, Haunted House at AZ Academy, now selling over 2000 tickets! With fiftyfive actors, and ruins with an old sugar mill for a setting, the Haunted House becomes a huge theater and scary treat for both children and adults! The Gelardi’s also collaborate with troupes to help make February’s Northshore Mardi Croix Parade a local hit.
Within two weeks of her arrival, she began diving with Cane Bay Dive Shop and met her soonto-be husband, Michael Gelardi! He was her dive instructor and immediate friend. They shared a love of art, the ocean, and each other. On New Year’s Eve, 1999, Michael proposed on a night dive with St. Croix Ultimate Bluewater Adventures (SCUBA)! Barbara received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. While in North Carolina, she apprenticed under several successful mural artists and was soon completing her own projects and large-scale group portraiture. Her work was characterized by big, bold images that take on a narrative theme. Even early murals on St. Croix began to tell a story. At Rumrunners in Christiansted, the story evolves from boats pulling onto a beach where mermaids and wild tropical animals and jumbies hide. The mural continues to ‘Speak Easy’ times of Prohibition to Pirates of the Caribbean. She has painted many private homes on St. Croix as well. In the hills on the East End, she painted the Contessa’s Castle with exotic skies and birds. For local Rastafarian business owners, she’s created murals that celebrate the purity Page 36 • June / July 2018
Her work has been anything but traditional. “Some people want what everyone else has, some people want what no one has. The latter are ‘my people,’ she says!
Pink Hibiscus.
Barbara’s latest evolution is at her studio in Apothecary Hall on Company Street, Christiansted. Her smaller canvas work became very popular at local festivals like Mango Melee at the St. George Village Botanical Garden and Starving Artist Day at Whim Museum. Soon people were trying to find her at her Blue Mountain home on West Scenic Drive. A studio in Christiansted became a necessity.
Juvie Reef.
Now she combines her love of teaching and painting in one location. She offers Friday Night Paint ‘n’ Sip Classes, at 5pm, and a popular Kid’s Painting & Jewelry Class Saturday mornings from 10 am – 12:30 pm. Barbara’s studio features original acrylic artworks as well as less expensive high-detail giclees on canvas. The studio is open to the public, Monday – Saturday, 9 am – 3 pm. To reserve a class space or for more info, you can text her. To check out new projects and artwork, friend her on Facebook, Barbara O’Rork Gelardi. Nataraja.

Our Danish Connection VELKOMMEN!
Icons from Days of Danish Colonial Rule Now in Copenhagen!
Jeanette Ehlers and LaVaughn Belle.
(340) 776-0656. Page 38 • June / July 2018
“I Am Queen Mary” sculpture.
David Berg
Freedom sculpture, Frederiksted.
by Nina York A major move, in the direction of Denmark acknowledging its colonial role in the US Virgin Islands formerly known as the Danish West Indies, has taken place in the form of two sculptures placed in central Copenhagen’s waterfront, right in front of a building that played a major role in the trade of cane sugar harvested in our islands. While both sculptures have relevance, the first one is already familiar to us, in that copies of the “Freedom” sculpture by Bright Bimpong, are found on all three islands, and a fourth copy was donated to a Danish museum in 2016; it has now found a much more visible site and illustrates, as it did when installed in the islands in 1998 at the time of our 150th anniversary of Emancipation, the struggle faced by the enslaved. It shows a bare-chested enslaved male with the cane bill in one hand and holding and blowing the conch shell tutu in the other, a signal to rise up against the cruelty he had to endure. In St. Croix, the life-size statue is placed in front of Frederiksted’s historic Oscar Henry Custom House fronting the cruise ship pier. The second sculpture is of far greater significance and portrays, in more than life size, a woman who played a major role in our island history to the point that she had regal status conferred on her – Queen Mary, with the last name Thomas – and even had the former Centerline Road renamed in her honor as Queen Mary Highway. She was the leader of the October 1, 1878 revolt known as “The Fireburn,” protesting the inhuman treatment of the agricultural workers, no longer enslaved but still abused, by burning down about 50 plantations and parts of Frederiksted. This resulted in her arrest with other women and a lengthy prison term in Copenhagen’s Women Prison. Two women artists of color, Danish Jeanette Ehlers and our own LaVaughn Belle, collaborated on this majestic portrayal, even to the point that scans of their bodies were molded together for the statue. The statue, which they named “I am Queen Mary” shows a seated woman on a tropical peacock chair, wearing a madras turban and a dress with buttoned bodice and flowing skirt, holding the cane bill in one hand and a flame torch in the other. Her expression is stern and evokes our realization of the misery that pervaded the lives of the field workers whose freedom was in name only, as the date of the Fireburn, October 1, was the only time of the year they could change jobs, and their wages remained totally inadequate. The recognition of a legacy of responsibility for such injustice has only recently come to the forefront of the Danish awareness, to a great extent due to the major coverage given by the Danish media to the islands’ history on the occasion of last year’s Transfer Centennial.

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!
5 Reasons to Elope
■ Ease of Planning Elopes are one of my favorite types of weddings to shoot. Unlike larger weddings, they get right to the heart of the day, while maintaining the same level of love, passion, and intensity. Having planed my own wedding of 100+ guests, had I considered dropping the number to 2, a world of possibilities would have opened for me! 2 is more easily accommodated than 10, 20, 50, or 100. ■ Budget Friendly The Wedding tax is real. No matter how I choose to justify it, as a Wedding Vendor , I know a wedding can be expensive. If you can quell any resistance to the idea of eloping, one great argument for it would be the financial benefits. Depending on your vendor count, location, and other “bells a whistles,” (not including airfare and accommodations) elopes can range from $800-$5000. ■ Expanded Location Options As a party of 2, your destination and location options are endless. You can choose a large resort complete with concierge and wedding planning services for 2-12 guests, or choose an independent wedding planner to assist in finding vendors and the perfect location land or sea. You can also choose to “wing it” online and research your destination and locations on your own. ■ Schedule Forward The smaller the Wedding, the easier it is to plan, and with ease comes schedule flexibility, meaning you are not bound to the weekend. When there are only 2, taking off on a Sunday and exchanging vows on a Tuesday morning on the boardwalk, the rainforest, or a quiet palm grove are all possible. ■ Couple Focused Large weddings, although fun and seemingly worth the effort, are often painstaking to plan, not to mention cost prohibitive! Unlike large weddings, where much of the focus is on the experience of the guests, by design, an elope focuses solely on the couple. However you choose to celebrate your love is your choice. Maybe a large wedding, maybe a quiet affair for 2 or maybe an elope!

Michelle Pugh, a 39-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Michelle was also given the SBDC and Congressional Award for Entrepreneurial Success for Dive Experience. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 29 years. He knows the reefs like the back of his hand. His videos are a favorite souvenir! Skeeter, the dog, loves the dive boat and swimming with the divers. Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, is the only dive center owner that actually dives most everyday—guiding lots of customers
by request. While developing the dive mooring sites, she has explored most St Croix reefs and walls. Michelle has also traveled the world just to dive—like the East coast of the US from Florida to Rhode Island, the West coast from Canada to Mexico, The Red Sea, Australia, Solomon IsSusan Wall lands, Borneo, Philippines, the Antarctic, and most of the Caribbean Islands. And, I recently returned from the Galapagos Islands! Dive Experience is St Croix’s first dive operator and the first PADI 5-star IDC center. They teach diving from novice to professional instructors. Christiansted National Historic Site
Threatened Historic Danish Well Tower to be Stabilized
Wharf Bulkhead Replacement Project
Big Beard’s Adventure Tours—Take time for Salt River.
Big Beard’s Adventure Tours – 340-773-4482
Explore Salt River like you have never seen it before. Join us aboard our pontoon boat, the ‘Discovery,’ for a comfortable, informative trip around the back bays of Salt River. Learn about the rich history and the unique ecology of St. Croix’s largest remaining mangrove estuary. The ‘Discovery’ departs from the Salt River Marina several times a day. We can accommodate groups of up to 6 people in spacious comfort. We provide filtered drinking water and a cooler for you to bring drinks along. Relax and enjoy one of St. Croix’s hidden gems. www.bigbeards.com. Facebook.
The Christiansted National Historic Site will be replacing the Wharf Bulkhead along the harbor front of the Historic Site. Engineering and design phase to determine the appropriate materials, skirting and bulkhead construction method is underway. The project will replace the existing bulkhead structure and provide a newly constructed bulkhead for waterfront access, increased storm protection and emergency vessel response access. The Project will be conducted in a series of phases; the park is now in the planning phase. Three soil and core boring samples will be drilled on the waterfront, on the sea floor, to assess geotechnical feasibility to occur for two weeks May 8 – 18. Operations will require a drilling rig on site to operate from the hours of 7 am – 4 pm, Monday through Friday. Drilling operations will produce noise and require closing off small portions of the park grounds. Access to the parking lot should not be affected, and there are no anticipated effects to historic structures. A map showing the locations of the proposed boring sites is available upon request. The anticipated schedule for this project is: ■ Design Completion (approved drawings), 5/31/19 ■ Construction Contract Award: 9/15/19 ■ Construction Start (actual on-site mobilization and start of work): 10/15/19 ■ Construction Completion: 4/15/20 (This is based only on a very rough estimate of a 6-month construction duration; this could change significantly depending on site condition.) During the construction phase, potential impacts to the Christiansted community will be minimalized as much as possible, but may effect wharf area events, and to the traffic turnaround by King Christian Hotel. Page 46 • June / July 2018
The National Park Service, Salt River Bay and NPS Historic Preservation Training Center Masonry Team are undertaking the stabilization and restoration of the 18th/19th century Danish Well Tower located on the west side of Sugar Bay which began in February-March 2018. The tower was likely a water pumping mill used to funnel water through a channel for historic crops such as sugar cane or indigo. This tower is located on lands that were in cultivation as part of Estate Morningstar, 1750. The tower is constructed of stone masonry and coral block. The tower is approximately 16 feet in diameter and estimated to be over 40 feet high. The base of the tower has two arched entrances and the interior is open to the sky. This structure is one of only a handful of surviving well towers in the Virgin Islands and is a significant resource for St. Croix. The tower became structurally unstable due to the intrusion of surrounding vegetation, repeated wind storm events beginning with Hurricane Omar (2008), and most recently, severe flooding from Hurricane Maria (2017). Phase I of this project was site clearing and clean-up of extensive hurricane debris in preparation to install drainage mitigation and bank stabilization, which will provide protection to the tower base and structure during severe storm flooding. In Phase II, the team removed vegetation and did masonry inspections and repairs to the tower, replaced missing stones, and placed mortar caps on all skyward surfaces. NPS will restore the forest landscape surrounding the Well Tower with native trees. A visitor parking/pull off area will also be installed, on the east side of the road. A short trail and educational waysides will guide visitors along a gravel foot path to the tower, which will provide several views of the tower and the surrounding forest. During construction, the area will be closed for visitation. Look for the completion of this project, unfolding an industrial archeological treasure with a story to tell! DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Let our Attractions & Tours pages (7-9) and our St. Croix Road Map (54 & 55) and town maps (56-58) help you plan your island tour! w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Telefon. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).
CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in63 Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Something Old, Something New— Update on the The Centennial Legacy Project by Apple Gidley St. Croix does old. Frederiksted is, on the whole, the younger of the two main towns in that much of it was rebuilt after the worker rebellion ‘fireburn’ in 1878, the outcome of which was instrumental in changing punitive labour laws. Christiansted was spared the flames and many buildings exude the island’s history - both good and bad. Funded by the lucrative sugar industry and built by and on the backs of the enslaved, they are an integral part of the Virgin Island’s heritage. However, some of these historic buildings have become crumbling ruins taken over by tan-tan saplings and vines, and now give little credence to their cultural importance.
see these true community development projects materializing and it’s my hope that the community understands the benefits that these facilities will have for our young citizens: the next generation. They will also help revitalize our historic towns which are in such need of aid as we bounce back from last year’s devastating hurricanes.” With seed money of $300,000 already obtained through the VI government and BYFO, steps are now being taken to raise the $40 million needed to start the actual conservation, restoration and renovation of both buildings. Old Barracks interior courtyard.
There is, though, a buzz building in both towns. Based around The Centennial Legacy Project: In Search of Identity, a joint endeavor between the Virgin Islands and BYFO (Association of Historical Houses in Denmark), which is spearheading an exciting venture to bring life back into ruins upon which the years have taken their toll. The buzz in Frederiksted is due to C.H.A.N.T’s (Crucian Heritage & Nature Tourism) new Building Arts Institute, led by Executive Director, Frandelle Gerard, which will eventually send students on to continue their studies at the Center for Architecture, Crafts and Built Heritage. The something new to be developed out of something old - the army barracks on Hospital Street. The spirit of which clearly follows urban activist Jane Jacobs’ ethos from her seminal book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, “Old ideas can sometimes use new buildings. New ideas must use old buildings.” The buzzing everywhere is due to progress recently made with the formalization of not-for-profit organizations for both St Croix and St Thomas, where the J. Antonio Jarvis School will become the VI Museum, Civic and Cultural Center. Each entity has Danish representatives and members from both the government and private sectors in the VI.

When funds are needed for so many projects it can be difficult to see the economic benefit of breathing new life into buildings ignored for so many years. The proposed Center of Architecture will, though, have a positive social impact through its commitment to having public spaces - a cafeteria, an archive center, an auditorium and gardens. So too a positive financial impact through private rental accommodation in Christiansted needed for students, visiting professors and families. Renovations are already afoot with some properties on Queen Street. An urban renewal beneficial to the long-term health of the town. Christiansted might not be a ‘great’ American city, but our town has a unique heritage which must be built upon and preserved for future generations. To create a learning environment for both academic students and those interested in practical skills. To create jobs not only in the renovation phase of the project but also in the end product. To create urban renewal for historic Christiansted, and St. Croix on the whole, with an audacious project which could bring global exposure and tourist dollars. The yellow bricks from Flensburg, brought to St Croix as ballast on Danish ships, and with which much of our towns were built may not lead to the Emerald City, but they undoubtedly give a warm glow to many public and private buildings. Let’s restore the beauty of these buildings, so integral to Virgin Islands heritage, and follow the yellow brick road to a newly energized and much visited town.
As Gerville Larsen, the Crucian architect instrumental in the vanguard of this important restoration reported, “On April 10th a formal meeting of the newly formed Executive and Advisory Boards for the Let’s keep the buzz going and turn Old Barracks promenade, Hospital Street. Cooking On All Burners! by Amy Land-de Wilde With our first season past us after Maria hit our shores last September, we are so happy to report that our market hasn’t slowed. We get many inquiries from those in the U.S. asking what the market’s like, what the condition of the island is, what’s open and all those natural questions that occur after a weather event. The market is perky; the island looks pretty much back to normal; not only is everything open, but we’ve seen some new businesses open as well! I’ve spoken to many of our recent visitors who were very pleasantly surprised to see us cooking on all burners, so to speak! We have gotten some inquiries regarding the availability of distressed or damaged properties, and we are very pleased to say that there’s virtually none of that available. What we do have is great value compared to other resort destinations. As I write this, there are 77 condos on the market, an almost historic low. You can get a two-bedroom waterfront condo for a tad over $100,000! Of course, you can spend over $1 million too, but you don’t have to. Waterfront homes start at $700,000 and go up from there. Many want to have more of a panorama and love our hilltop locations with varied views that include our sparkling turquoise sea. Our prices have remained stable, but we are starting to see a reduction in inventory in some of those popular categories most appealing to our second-home buyers. We expect to see prices start to creep up because of this, so if you’ve been on the fence about owning your slice of paradise, you might want to make a move. We are looking forward to bragging about our island to you, so please feel free to drop in, check out our website, call, text or email us! We are eager to show you why we’ve all chosen to make our wonderful St. Croix home! Amy Land-de Wilde is President and Managing Broker of Coldwell Banker St. Croix Realty. She fell in love with the island on first sight and has lived here for nearly 40 years. As night descends and the sky gets darker, look high in the southeast for another star-like object, the bright Jupiter. Jupiter will be at its closest approach to Earth for the year on May 9th. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. Saturn will rise in the east around 8:00 p.m. After a few hours Saturn will rise higher in the sky and thus will be easy to spot. The ringed planet will be at its closest approach to Earth for all of 2018 on June 27th. Page 64 • June / July 2018

Shooting stars or meteors are the flash of light we see as pebble-sized rocks burn up speeding through the air some 50 miles about the Earth. When the Earth passes through a cloud of this debris left behind by a comet, we experience a meteor shower. The evening of May 6th to 7th is the maximum of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower and on a good dark night you might see some 40 or so meteors or “shooting stars” per hour. The best time to look is between midnight and dawn. Unfortunately, this year the Moon’s bright light will overpower all but the brightest “falling stars”. Look high in the northern sky for seven bright stars that form the Big Dipper; three stars form the curved handle and four more the bowl. You can use the Big Dipper to find your way around the sky. If you draw a line through the two stars at the end of the bowl and extend the line toward the horizon, you will come to a fainter star, this is Polaris, the North Star. Polaris is called the North Star because it is
almost exactly directly over the North Pole of the Earth. Thus, while all the other stars circle the night sky from East to West, Polaris stays in the same spot. Go back to the Big Dipper. Draw a line through the same two stars, but this time in the opposite direction. You will come to a bright reddish colored star. This is Regulus, the heart of Leo the Lion. Regulus is also the dot at the base of a backwards question mark. The top of the question mark forms the lion’s head. Return once more to the Big Dipper. This time follow the arc of the handle to the bright star Arcturus and speed on to Spica. Arcturus is the brightest star in Boötes, the Herdsman. Spica is a piece of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the Goddess of the Harvest. If you continue following that curved pat, very low in the southern sky you will find another famous constellation, the Southern Cross. Yes, you can see both the Big Dipper and the Southern Cross in the sky at the same time. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
