Whether with family, friends, or on your own, this magazine has the inside track and advance view of all the upcoming events and activities on the “Big Island.” St. Croix’s relaxing beaches and rolling hillsides are the perfect complement for a weekend get-away, and the downtown shopping and restaurants in Christiansted and Frederiksted offer a variety of choices. Celebrating 50 Years of Culture, Unity & Friendship

he VI-PR Friendship Committee has been celebrating for many, many years. Well, 50, to be exact!

It’s been our mission to recognize the contributions of Puerto Ricans to the betterment of this community and to strengthen the familyfriendship ties that have bound us together for so long. Also, to bring everybody (Puerto Ricans, all Hispanics and the entire community) activities and events that bring togetherness and brotherhood to the forefront of our lives.

Village of yesterday. We have expanded it from a day, to a weekend, to a week, and now to a month and more! We’ve added a religious service, a Family Fun Day, a Cultural Show, Art Shows at Caribbean Museum Center, Bomba and Mask Workshops, School Presentations with professionals from PR (Bomba, Plena, folkloric music), and Poster Contests.

Our plans in our 50th Year go back to April for a well-attended Kite Workshop for children and adults, followed by a “Bohemia Night” at the Winning poster, 2013, Good Hope Country Day School. ARMAPAVIE facilities—a night to remember that we will repeat in September. At the end of August Over the years, we have gone from honoring just individuthere was a VI-PR fundraiser Softball Tournament with six teams. als to now honoring outstanding students, service organizations, persons with disabilities, citizens for our youth, citizens for sports and, this year small business owners who have made it against all odds and who have always found a place in their hearts to help the community. After much effort, we have created a Hispanic Collection Corner in the Florence Williams Library in Christiansted. With persistence and dedication, we were able to secure the area, get excellent book donations, and open it to the public. It took years, but it’s there now. The VI-PR Committee annual events are more that just the

urning 50 is a joyful occasion for persons as well organizations, and the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society, is doing it in style, with a November 8th Gala Celebration, at Government House of Quelbe music and dance, elegant finger food and drink, and reminiscences starting with 1964 when a group of community-minded local citizens, prompted by a Danish tourism promoter, started this friendship organization. Two elderly members are to receive special recognition of their contributions, and an extensive booklet covering 50 years of memories to be published. With the season of the annual Danish visitor invasion having started, we may see quite a few celebrants from the old country. The enduring affection among Danes for her former colonies here, along with so much enthusiasm for Denmark here, has given the Society much to be proud of and look back on. In 1967, the first visit to the Virgin Islands by a group of members of the Danish West Indian Society, their Danish counterpart and sister Society, took place amid much festivity. That event, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the March 31, 1917 Transfer, marked the beginning of the Danish West Indian Festivals: Biennial group exchange visits, alternating between the two countries, where participants stay in the homes of members of the respective Societies. The twoweek long Festivals feature local attractions of particular mutual interest, get-togethers with local families and group activities. They foster and reaffirm warm and lasting trans-Atlantic friendships. The St. Croix section of the 2015 Festival offers residents

October Hispanic Heritage Month events include The Fiesta en el Batey or Family Fun Day, the Hispanic Parade, the VI-PR Classic Horse Race, and the Reception at Government House where we will accept a painting donation from Diego Conde to be placed in the Hispanic Collection at the Florence Williams Library and recognize Mr. Miquel Diaz Duchesne, first President of VI-PR Committee, plus former Hispanic queens. an opportunity to host a Danish couple or individual, a happy introduction to Friends of Denmark for many island families. St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society is more than a travel club. Over the years it has sponsored cultural visits to the island by Danish groups, such as gymnasts, musicians, folk and ballet dancers, and scholars. It always welcomed the cadets and officers of the Danish tallship training vessel Danmark that used to come here. The scholarship program has offered local young people an opportunity to study in Denmark that they later put to use as artists, scholars, and musicians. It has sponsored the publication of scholarly books, pamphlets and a DVD covering Danish West Indies history. St. Croix Friends of Denmark events take place throughout the year, with occasional lectures and video showings, participation in events such as Transfer Day, and Danish celebrations like the midsummer St. Hans Aften bonfire event. A Danish West Indian Night culinary celebration, when Danish food was served, some of it adapted to use local ingredients, proved very popular. David and Sonya Hough moved to St. Croix in 1964 with five children. David taught art in the public schools and soon he and Sonya opened Sun Arts Corner Shop on Company Street. Together they sold art supplies, macrame, hand-made batik cloth and dresses. Sonya had taken a jewelry class before moving here enabling her to make a piece now and then and, when it sold, make another. After a few years, Sonya and David decided to change the name of the store to Sonya ltd. The now-famous hook bracelet was not made that first year but the jewelry was soon taking over the shop. David designed the pieces and Sonya made them. He also continued to teach and make art work until his death in 1995. The family still owns and operates the business, and Sonya still makes custom pieces and is very involved with the store, her family, and the community through contributions to Lutheran Social Services, Women’s Coalition and St. Croix Animal Welfare. She now has six grandchildren! Over the 50 years, Sonya admits that she has had a wonderful staff and jewelery designers but, more than that, she says, “we have been blessed with wonderful and loyal customers!” This year Sonya is celebrating her 84th birthday along with the 50th Anniversary of the jewelry store with a celebration around Labor Day. Custom 50th anniversary bracelets, key chains and earrings are available along with other jewelry items. Sonya’s true claim to fame is having the oldest jewelry store on St. Croix and, of course, her hook bracelets. Her custom made pieces can be found on customers all around the world.

AROUND THE ISLAND

The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. Their handsome yellow buildings at the entrance to Christiansted and red-roofed white wooden church mid-island, along with a contemporary church in Frederiksted, attest to their continued importance.

The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted, and in Frederiksted the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church, which had been damaged by a fire in 1996. These and other Anglican churches bear witmess to the large English population which settled here (and also brought us our custom of left lane driving. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presece of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands; also significant and historic are St. Ann’s (with an interesting shrine) mid-island, St. Joseph’s on Centerline, and St. Patrick’s in Frederiksted. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has an new mid-island home. But these are just a few of the many (at last count over 150) churches on St. Croix, from Seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, any many more. You will find that church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population, and visitors are always welcome at services,often a high point in their experience of our island. Many other faiths offer places of worship: a Jewish synagoge, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. “I have been coming to St Croix since my first visit in 1989 when my parents rented Butler Bay for the month of March. After the hurricane hit (Hugo) I took several years off and explored other West Indian islands only to return to St Croix as I liked it the best of all I had experienced.

My husband and I were fortunate enough to know Preston and Mona (Lawaetz) Doane who helped us find our way around St Croix and suggested we get acquainted with Cheney Bay. We have now been staying there for years and have a time share which we use every March. At one time we bought some property on Miss Bea Rd. which we loved, but were unable to build due to the change in the economy and have since sold it much to our dismay.

I recently met with a couple on St. Croix who were here to do a site visit for their upcoming wedding. They were quite busy meeting with all of their vendors, reviewing the various locations within the venue, deciding on their menu, and trying to address all of the other details in preparation for their big day. Wedding production was in full swing! During our meeting, we first discussed all of the business matters pertaining to their wedding photography—timelines, coverage flow, and event features. With my clients, once we have the business details covered, I always make a point to find out what their expectations are for the photography, and if there is a “look” that they are going for. This is always my favorite part of a client meeting because it reveals so much about a couple’s focus and intentions. I asked them if I could see some of their inspirations behind their wedding theme and styling, and they were able to produce an inspiration board based on their chosen theme. Like many of the inspiration boards I encounter, most of the examples were photographs of other couples in really intimate settings with romantic expressions and poses. I love this! While reviewing their inspiration, I become inspired. I assure my clients that the romantic images that inspire them are attainable. However, in order to achieve the desired look, the passion, the light, the heat (yes, I am quoting Peter Gabriel), has more to do with their connection. My job is to use my technical expertise and my gift of timely precision and creativity to capture what already exists. I tell my clients focus on each other, embrace, kiss, laugh, be in the moment and forget about the camera. Be the inspiration you want to see.

Dive Experience Boasts New Location! We’ve moved! Dive Experience, St Croix’s oldest established dive operator, has moved to the Christiansted boardwalk at the Kings Alley Hotel with their Dive Experience II dive boat just steps away on the waterfront dock! As St Croix’s first PADI 5-Star Dive Center, Dive Experience has been teaching people to dive from novice (Discover Diving Program) to professional dive instructors for 32 years. “The new store is much bigger,” says owner Michelle Pugh, “and will not only be a full-service dive center, but will cater to the non-diver, St. Croix visitors, and locals. Over the years I have had people asking for products from toothbrushes, bottled water, and clothing to a cup of coffee. Now it will be available to them.” Dive Experience has increased its snorkel rental department with prescription masks and snorkel vests and a state-of-the-art repair department is a major part of the new location. Store hours are longer so people going to dinner in town can pass by to book their dives or to pick up a beach towel for their Buck Island trip the next morning. learned to dive in LA in 1970. In the fall of 1977, with a chance to go to St. Croix to teach diving, she fell in love with the island and opened up her own business. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 27 years. His souvenir videos are a favorite! Skeeter, the rescue dog, loves the boat and swimming with the divers. In 1993, along with Jacques Cousteau, Michelle was inducted into the Platinum Pro 5000, through SSI, and in March of 2004 into

the Women Divers Hall of Fame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wild, the first American woman to teach diving in Russia, and for estab¬lishing the mooring system on St. Croix. That same year, Michelle was given the SBDC and Congres¬sional Award for Entrepreneurial Success. Toting a 100-ton Captain’s License, she has been on the St. Croix Fisheries Advisory Committee and on the Caribbean Council for Fisheries Manage¬ment here since 1989. Dive Experience’s new boardwalk location will be the judging area for the upcoming REEF Lionfish Derby in November (see Events Calendar) with thousands of dollars in prize money. “I will miss most of the activities in November due to a planned trip to the Antarctic to dive. It’s a life-long dream to dive the Antarctic—the marine life is incredible.” Her other dives include Washington state to California, Hawaii, Florida to Rhode Island and British Colombia in Canada, The Red Sea to Borneo, Philippines to Solomon Islands and, of course, Russia!

Neck ‘n Neck Racing in the SCYC’s Annual International Regatta!

he St. Croix International Regatta, sponsored by the USVI Department of Tourism, is set for November 14 – 16!

The St. Croix Yacht Club will host a Welcome Party for sailors, support personnel, and spectators on Thursday evening, November 13. The Commodore’s Race is on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, all yachts will compete for the International Regatta Trophy. Live entertainment, Friday and Saturday evenings, will feature notable Crucian entertainers, food, and drink in the Clubhouse with dancing on the beach. Classes, with seven or more contestants, will award the winning skipper his weight in Cruzan Rum. The skipper sits on a large scale and is counter-balanced as cases of Cruzan

Rum are added—always assisted by raucous spectators! Proposed classes are CSA racing, both spinnaker and non-spinnaker, Rhodes 19, and large multihulls. The organizers intend to create a class for any one-design group with three or more entries. The entry fee remains at $150. for all three days. We anticipate a good turnout with sailors from Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands. The committee is hoping for seven or more entries in Spinnaker, Rhodes 19, and Multihull classes. Columbus Landing - The site of the 1493

landing of Columbus at Salt River. Accessed by the road to the left of Salt River Marina. Minimal facilities. Managed by the Territorial State Historic Preservation Office (DPNR), and is within the boundaries of the National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. Great view of Salt River from the Visitor’s Center. Call for hours, 340-773-1460.

Cramer Park - Just before Pt. Udall, on

St. Croix’s East End, is a beautiful long, deep public beach with bathrooms, changing rooms, and picnic tables.

Dorsch Beach - South of Frederiksted is this deep, white-sand beach with hotels, beach bars, and restaurants nearby; great swimming and snorkeling.

We love tennis on St. Croix! Some courts are equipped for night play.

Rainbow Beach - North of Frederiksted is this lively beach with bar and restaurant plus watersports and volleyball. Live music on Sunday afternoons. Great for swimming!

Reef Beach – A nice slip-of-a-beach across the

street from the Reef Condos on the East End. With a very gradual decline, the beach is perfect for getting on and off your windsurfer or for swimming with small children. Restaurants and golf nearby.

Sandy Point - Located on St. Croix’s West End,

this spectacular beach is part of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge and is one the longest in the Caribbean! Park your car in the lot and take a short hike to the beach area for swimming, more hiking, and wildlife/nature photo ops. The beach is also a popular nesting site for the leatherback, hawksbill, green, and loggerhead sea turtles between April 1 and September 1 and is closed 7-days a week. Beach access is however open the rest of the year on weekends only, Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. For info call the US Fish & Wildlife Service at 340-773-4554.

Shoy Beach - A popular local’s beach located

inside the entrance to The Buccaneer. Just tell the attendant at the guard gate to your right, that you are heading down to the beach. Parking lot at the end of the road. No facilities; some shade trees. Deep, lush sand. Great swimming.

St. Croix East End Marine Park - The USVI’s

first marine park encompasses approximately 60 square miles of coastal and marine habitats on St. Croix’s East End providing a great opportunity to experience the natural wonders of the island. Managed buy the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), a division of Coastal Zone Management. Beaches, watersports, hotels, restaurants, and the St. Croix Yacht Club within the parameters.

ARRIVAL. US citizens don’t need a passport; departing visitors need a photo ID. LOCATION. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. VIRGIN ISLANDERS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it. CLIMATE. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly. TIME. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings. WHAT TO WEAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protectors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU. The Christiansted Visitors Bureau is located in Government House on Queen Cross Street; open weekdays. The Frederiksted Visitor’s Bureau

is located in a Strand Street courtyard near the Pier; open weekdays & cruise-ship days. A Christiansted National Historic Site Visitor’s Orientation Center is located at Scale House on King Street at the Wharf. The seasoned traveler doesn’t take chances. Lock your car, don’t wear valuable jewelry wandering in town, keep to the main areas. CURRENCY & BANKING. We use the US dollar and credit cards are accepted everywhere. TAXES. No sales tax but a 10% government tax is applied to hotel rooms. COMMUNICATIONS. St. Croix has several radio stations and three television stations; Cable TV carries the national news stations. Two newspapers are published daily; also an online daily. New York and Miami papers arrive each morning. TELEPHONE SERVICE. The local area code is 340 but you need not dial it for local numbers. Phone cards are sold at many shops throughout the island. We have local Sprint and ATT stores plus Radio Shack for any forgotten cell phone accessories. POSTAL RATES. As part of the US postal system, 1st class mail is .49 cents for the first ounce, postcards are .33 cents, international rates are $1.10 for cards and letters. See maps for post office locations. MARINE LIFE. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession. HOLIDAYS. We celebrate US Federal holidays and local ones as well. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO DRIVE LEFT! Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed.

Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Fort Christiansvaern and a large public lot with fees just west of town on Strand and King Cross Streets. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Airport and Towns were obtained from the Taxi Commission and have been approved by the VI Legislature. Look for only licensed taxis which carry a dome light and the letters TP on their license plate. Rates must be posted. Since taxis aren’t metered, confirm the rate before getting in the taxi!

Taxi Charges & Special Provisions ■ The charges to areas not listed in this schedule shall be arrived at by using the nearest place with a rate crossed to the next place ahead with a rate closest to the passenger’s destination. ■ A taxi driver, while on duty, shall not refuse any passenger unless the passenger is intoxicated and disorderly or in the possession of a pet (other than a seeing eye or service dog) that is not properly secured in a kennel. No charge for service dogs. Large kennel charge, $30., small kennel, $20. ■ Round-trip fares are double the oneway fare plus waiting charges of $1. per minute. Economy-minded visitors can pick up a ride from Christiansted to Frederiksted or reverse for $2.50, if they are willing to share with local riders. Frederiksted Pier — One of St Croix’s most favorite dive locations. Best “muck diving” in the Caribbean! Look for Frog fish, Seahorses, Bat fish, Eels and many schools of fish. This is a shallow dive so you can get an hour or more dive time in.

Swirling Reef of Death — This is a shallow reef area with lots of juvinile reef fish. Just like divng in an aquarium! If you want to go deeper, there is a nice slope to go down.

Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrel of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available. Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site. The Steeple Building 4 across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort. Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse 5 , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Government House 6 on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Christiansted National Historic Site Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean

in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (17551871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Take two tours—“Free Gut” is the freed black neighborhood of Christiansted established by the Danish in 1748 and “Gallows Bay” is the fishing community that sustained Christiansted’s fish market for more than two centuries. You can reach Frederiksted with its quaint, historic town architecture in several ways. The four-lane Melvin Evans Highway is your speediest route, if you are coming from the east. Most drivers take Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), which also takes you to the St. George Village Botanical Garden, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and Whim Plantation Museum, all just off the Queen Mary Highway.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800’s. The building is undergoing renovations. The Visitors’ Bureau, normally located here, has been temporarily moved to an upstairs location in the courtyard of a nearby building on Strand Street. The Freedom Fountain facing the pier was installed for the Emancipation 150th anniversary celebration. In a historic light blue building down a block is the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House on Strand Street and Apothecary Hall on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets preserve the Frederiksted architecture of that time. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Friedensberg Moravian Church, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The newly restored Old Danish School on Hospital Street and Market Street is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, built in 1803. The Market Place is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted. There are ATMs at the Scotiabank and First Bank locations on Strand Street. After hours, swipe your card at the door to get inside. The Frederiksted waterfront is home to Sunset Jazz concerts, held the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Touring Frederiksted Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and newly revitalized waterfront. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits and an art gallery, it is open weekdays from 8:30 am to 4 p.m. There is a small admission charge.

Take Creque Dam Road (Route 58) through scenic valleys and under towering trees. This road is passable by car, but narrow and a bit rough. The rainforest can be explored by car, 4 WD (unpaved West Scenic Road can be impassable after heavy rains) or on horseback. Among area attractions are the Lawaetz Family Museum and lovely gardens at Estate Little La Grange, the impressive Estate Mt. Washington ruins, the nearby giant baobab trees at Butler Bay, and the infamous beer-drinking pigs!

You can also travel west through the rainforest on Route 76, Mahogany Road (which farther east is Route 72, Midland Road). If you are a bit adventurous, turn off on 765 or 763 (see signs for Creque Dam Farm and Mt. Victory Camp, both worth a visit)

You can pick up Route 63 along the water north of the Fort, or if you want to bypass the town when coming from the Queen Mary Highway, take the La Grange Road, Route 63, by turning rights just after Whim Museum.

From Queen Mary Highway, turn right at the traffic light at Hannah’s Rest. From the end of Melvin Evans Highway, turn right and continue north through the traffic light. Turn left at the Post Office (this is Fisher Street). Frederiksted town is rebounding, thanks to a recent $14 million revitalization project. To get to Strand Street, Fort Frederik and the beautifully landscaped waterfront and the Pier, turn right just before the fishermen’s boat ramp and market shed at the end of Fisher Street. This is a great starting point for a walking tour of the town with its many historic buildings.

Christiansted National Historic Site Part 1 in a series Christiansted National Historic Site (NHS) is located in the heart of Christiansted, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI). The Virgin Islands are part of the Lesser Antilles and boarder the Greater and Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean, making their location an important crossroad for New World settlement and colonial history. Due to this location, the US purchased the Danish West Indies from Denmark in 1917. Established by order of the Secretary of the Interior as the Virgin Islands National Historic Site, March 4, 1952, the park was the result of civic-minded citizens who petitioned the federal government to protect the fort and its buildings. The park name changed to Christiansted National Historic Site on December 24, 1960, through an agreement between the US Government and the Municipality of St. Croix. The founding documents designated the park’s resources for protection and recognized the NHS location’s “national historical significance as an excellent example of the Danish economy and way of life in the Virgin Islands.” The National Park Service (NPS), Department of Interior, was named as the federal agency to manage and interpret the site, and is the first NPS unit in the USVI. Over the years, revised agreements between the USVI further outlined and broadened NPS’s role and responsibilities in managing the NHS. Christiansted NHS the home park for St. Croix’s other NPS units, Buck Island Reef National Monument and Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. The NHS consists of approximately seven acres of the Christiansted harbor waterfront. The NHS includes several important historic structures that reflect the 18th and 19th century Danish colonial rule and life on St. Croix. The structures include Fort Christiansvaern, the Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, the Danish Customs House, the Scale House, the Steeple Building, and the 1917 Bandstand. Christiansted NHS also is the anchor for the larger national register historic district that comprises the two harborside city blocks east of King Cross Street. This district preserves the island’s 18th century Danish colonial urban development and is managed by the St. Croix Historic Preservation Committee. The NHS was established to preserve, protect, study, and interpret the 18th and 19th century Danish historic landscape representative of the multiple economic, social, and cultural exchanges of the Caribbean’s colonial history. and the international sugar exchange. The Christiansted NHS historic structures and landscape comprise a unique and complete assemblage of 18th and 19th century Danish colonial administrative buildings and military fortifications. St. Croix was formerly one of the wealthiest islands in the West Indies, whose economy relied on sugar production, international trade, and a labor system of enslaved Africans and their descendants. The site also interprets its use as a major node in the 18th century slave trade, where tens of thousands of enslaved Africans to disembarked and were sold at auction. The site is a tangible witness to the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The NHS provides an exceptional opportunity to study and interpret the complexity of West Indian society resulting from ownership/colonization by several nations, and most recently transferred from Denmark to the US in 1917. Fort Christiansvaern and the waterfront was one of three venues for the ceremony that transferred the Danish West Indies to the United States.

Apart from the physical buildings at the site, the park has museum collections that contain a wide range of materials representing the rich history and culture of the U.S. Virgin Islands, including the artifacts and archive materials critical to understanding Danish colonial activity at Christiansted, the Folmer Andersen Collection, a world-class archeological collection documenting St. Croix’s Amerindian cultures, and natural and cultural collections from Buck Island Reef National Monument and Salt River Bay Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. Additionally, Christiansted hosts lectures about activities at all three parks and temporary exhibitions curated by local artists and students. As we move towards two centennials important to Christiansted, the Transfer to US rule (2017) and the NPS (2016), we look forward to updates and new exhibits at Christiansted. Planned for the 2016-17 year is a new exhibition discussing the Danish sugar and slave trade, a community storytelling and memory project, and an exploratory excavation of the Danish Guinea and West India Company Warehouse. Updates to the buildings include the development of a dark-sky friendly lighting system, and repainting, updating hardware and the structural repair to some of site’s structures. It is an exciting time for the park as we work towards these centennials.

MOVING HERE Dream – Build – Retire More vacationers every year find a way to move to “America’s Paradise.” They like that we are part of the US, have no state taxes, enjoy great year-round climate and are surrounded by beautiful beaches and turquoise water. Newcomers learn the traditions of culture and history on the island. Being home to dozens of community organizations, with volunteer opportunities, and annual events to attend, it’s easy to get involved quickly and form new friendships. St. Croix is an ideal second home for some and a wonderful year-round residence for others. Houses and condos are available for rent or purchase along with undeveloped land for those who want to build. Job openings exist in many fields and we have an Economic Development Commission (EDC) program that offers tax incentives for business owners who qualify. St. Croix retains a relaxing pace even though cosmopolitan in many ways. A Buyers’ Market by Amy Land-de-Wilde

If you’ve been in the real estate market for any length of time, then you’re familiar with its cycles. We have been quite busy recently because our values have gotten very buyer-friendly! In addition, we’ve had a lot of attention from HGTV. There have been various shows from Amazing Water Homes focusing on our luxury market and from Beachfront Bargain Hunt, where lucky purchasers have found their dream homes in paradise for under $375,000. Every time one of those shows airs, we receive so many inquiries by email and phone. Reality shows have been great for us! Last year, there were 54 condo closings year-to-date versus 80 this year with another 19 under contract. While there were over 200 condos on the market last year, there are only 160 today. We’ve been seeing a lot of buying urgency in this part of our market because with so much activity, shrinking inventory and rising prices are next. A lot of discussions about buying begin with questions about trying our island on for size. Many of our condos are available as vacation rentals. Why not consider renting while you go about discovering your favorite areas of the island? You’ll get a real feel of what it’s like to be a local! Condos are often the first home and jumping-off place for those wanting to live in paradise. Because they can be closed up so easily, condos make for great comings and goings as you ease your way into island life full time. (Some call condos their baby step.) We have rental condos all over St. Croix--from efficiencies to 4-bedrooms renting from about $100/night and up either right on the sand or high in our hills with more panoramic views. Nothing is far from blue water on St. Croix! Villa Madeleine is one of our very special destinations with a number of 1- and 2-bedroom condos for rent. Each has its own extremely private dipping pool—bathing suits very optional! Rates start at about $1700 a week off-season. It’s a very popular location for part-time paradise dwellers. Eight of them sold in the last year and as of this writing, there are three lovely villas on the market listed from $170,000. Our condos also generally come fully furnished, so you can just bring your flipflops and leave them. Another popular destination is Harbour Beach near our quaint west-end town of Frederiksted. On one of our most gorgeous sandy beaches, they are great for enjoying our spectacular sunsets! There are currently two on the market starting at $189,000. Of course, there are costs to living in paradise, and while we are definitely a bargain compared to other resort locations, some carrying costs might be higher than you’re used to in the U.S. But much of our entertainment is free! Inventory is firming up, unit sales are way up, and median prices are just starting to rise.
