Project Promise: Now Making a Difference at Home & Abroad

T

here are those who create seemingly endless lists of things they want to do “someday”— and then there’s St. Croix native Resa O’Reilly. When Resa decides to do something, there’s just no stopping her! Several years ago, Resa realized the many challenges facing the islands’ youth, and rather than just thinking that “someone ought to do something about it,” Resa took on the challenge. She founded Project Promise, a non-profit organization that is making a difference in the lives of at-risk youth on island. So, it’s no surprise that, when Resa’s 40th birthday was approaching in June, she decided to mark the occasion by doing something truly amazing. “I’ve always dreamed of traveling abroad and helping children in need,” Resa remarked. So, when she came across an opportunity to volunteer in South Africa, one of her dream destinations, she jumped at the chance. Resa absolutely loved South Africa. “It captivated my spirit. Going to Cape Town was one of the best decisions ever! I had such an amazing experience that I was inconsolable when it came time to leave,” she recalls. For her volunteer project, Resa was assigned to the Grade R (i.e., Kindergarten) class at St. Paul’s Primary School in Cape Town. One of the main goals of St. Paul’s is to teach English to children whose native language is Xhosa. Resa’s “job” was to assist the teacher and teach the children through her English-language interactions. Resa loved working at St. Paul’s and quickly became attached to the students. She was shocked to learn what it takes for them to attend this school. These children travel long distances, often spending hours on a bus to get to St. Paul’s, which offers a better education than the schools in their townships. In addition, their attendance at this public school is not free. The children’s parents, who all live in crushing poverty, make great sacrifices w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

to pay the tuition so that their children can receive a better education. When Resa realized that the annual tuition of 4,000 rands, which is the equivalent of just $343 per child, she knew she had to do something to help.

Caterpillars bought toys for St. Paul’s students.

“Before I left St. Paul’s, I notified the principal that I would raise money to pay a year’s tuition for two of the Grade R students that I worked with. My first day back on St. Croix, I had commitments to cover the two students,” O’Reilly remarked. Of course, Resa didn’t stop there! Project Promise Board Members, staff and volunteers, family, friends, local businesses, and community members all jumped in to assist. The Caterpillars — the 12 and 13-year-old participants in Project Promise’s flagship program — raised over $1,000 to pay for the education of three more students, often collecting donations one dollar at a time. In the end, enough money was raised to pay the tuition for all 25 children in the class, plus one additional student. “When I told Principal Mgudlwa that I had raised the monies promised plus ‘a little more,’ she was floored,” says Resa. “She said that although many have promised to continue to help her students, I was the first that actually followed through.” Resa returned to Cape Town in July to present the money in person, this time bringing her own children whom had also helped collect donations for the students. Nothing could have prepared her for the emotions she witnessed after announcing that Project Promise had raised the money to pay for an entire year’s tuition for not just two, but 26 students! This was truly a special moment for everyone involved, the donation to St. Paul’s was made in honor of Mandela Day, an international day where everyone can take action and inspire change in the world. This gift of education for a year will truly make a difference in these students and their family’s lives. “My journey to South Africa served as a reminder that life isn’t about us, life is really about how we can help others in need,” said O’Reilly.

Say hello to Chris and Melissa Mitchell of fusions International Small Plates! “Chris grew up on St. Croix but joined the Air Force after high school and spent many years in the military, stationed in locations all around the world. This international exposure gave him a wide-ranging culinary scope which we combine into a truly unique dining experience here at Fusions,” says Melissa. “In 2008, we moved back here with our two children who are now grown. We worked for many other restaurants on the islands before deciding to do our own. Chris’ professional training was with the Culinary Institute of America. He is now chef and I am sous chef!” They prefer not to use the word “tapas” when defining their cuisine, simply because “tapas” is native to Spain, just as “mezze” is native to Greece and Turkey. Because every culture has their own name for small plates, they prefer to use the phrase “international small plates” to encompass all of the dishes that they serve, since their origins are from many places around the world. The Mitchells challenge diners to step ‘outside the box’ and suggest that everyone try every item on our menu at least once. Many of their offerings may be completely unfamiliar but they believe their small portions and handcrafted specialty items are perfect for culinary exploration or sharing a one-of-a-kind dining experience with friends. Menu items include amazing variety like Tuna Poke Trio, Grilled Grouper Sammy, Crab Rangoon, Bulgogi Lettuce Wraps, Port Carnitas Tostadas, Katsudo Bowl, Baby Back Ribs, Yakitori, plus Poutine, Corn Nuggets, Tostones with Mango Salsa, Southwestern Black Bean Burger, Mediterranean Trio plus Soups and Salads. Fusions on East End Road just outside of Christiansted, is open Wednesday to Sunday for Lunch, 11 am – 3 pm and Dinner, 5 – 10 pm. Join them for a comfortable, welcoming experience, whether dining alone, with that special someone, or as a group. Dine in, take out and or let them cater for your large or small group.

Island Art

BRINGING HIS VISIONS TO FRUITION

Meet Cover Artist Lee Lashley “I was born in the island of Barbados, have one brother and five sisters, and lots of family throughout the Caribbean and overseas. As a young man, my father was an engineer always traveling to different islands and fell in love with St. Croix while on a contract assignment. He decided to vary his career and concentrate Lee Lashley. on his family here, while also spending lots of time on St. Thomas. We lived many places on St. Croix from West to East. Some of my early years were spent at the Seven Days Adventist School, the later years at a military St. Croix, Point Udall. academy in the United States where I also studied art. I used my summer time to attend a variety of other art related institutions, travel overseas to exotic locations, and also throughout the Caribbean documenting the lifestyles of people. The first person to introduce me to photography at a young age was my uncle who studied in England. Some of his work was published in various magazines including Time and Life. He took me out on a field trip with some other college photographers and let me use one of his Twin Lens Rolex Reflex cameras loaded with black & white film. When we went into the darkroom to process all my images, he was astonished by my compositions and how quickly I remembered the various settings of the twin lens camera and made me his personal student, teaching me all the fundamentals of the camera, negative, black & white processing, and understanding light and using it to your advantage. Fine Dining. My first camera I owned was that Twin Lens Rolex Reflex. Now I use all professionalgrade digital equipment that will cover most possible assignments, cameras from 12 to 42 megapixels, lenses from 8mm to 500mm, various lighting systems, and underwater equipment. I used to draw and paint a lot, but the camera seems to almost have that instant gratification which was so appealing to me. My creative ceramics art teacher in school always encouraged me to ‘always try to bring my visions to fruition’ and I used the camera as a hobby for years collecting various images mostly sceneries Romantic Wedding. and abstracts. Page 36 • August / September 2018

In the early days of my art career, I never really liked photographing people, until one day a friend asked me to photograph his wedding that led to me to photograph hundreds of other weddings after that. Now, after over 30 years of technical knowledge and actual photography experience, I have specialized in a variety of photography from weddings, professional studio work, black and white photography, commercial photography, corporate events, magazine editorial, people portraiture, and aerial and underwater photography. I do consider myself now a professional freelance photographer having done work for many companies, local and abroad like Lockheed Martin, American Onboard magazine, J. Walter Thompson, Wedding and Honeymoon magazine, Tempo Official Travel Photographer, various tourist boards including the US Virgin Islands, Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development Commission, Taste of St. Croix, St Croix Foundation, Places to Explore, USVI Marine Guide, and others. My mentors and heros include my uncle, of course, and a few photographer legends like Gordon Parks, Ansel Adams, Edwin Weston, Steve McCurry, and Hiroji Kubota. Right now, I am working on a series of elegant, 12x12, full-color coffee table books. One of them, Virgin Islands of the United States Enchanted Paradise, is a stunning book showcasing St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John. Also, high-quality, large format prints, from 24” x 30”, 24” x 36”, 30” x 40” and larger, to enhance any home or office, and a series of 18” x 24” Virgin Islands posters and a new service, Virtual Reality Photography.” Lee Lashley’s collections can be purchased at Sweetlime Furnishings, St George Village Botanical Garden Gift Shop, Eastern National Bookstore in the Scale House on the Christiansted Wharf, and at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts on Strand Street in Frederiksted.

Our Danish Connection

Numerous Ties That Bind Denmark to Us

VELKOMMEN!

(340) 776-0656. Page 38 • August / September 2018

by Nina York What constitutes a Danish connection with our island, and why it exists, is a lot more extensive than one would first imagine. The obvious historic relevance of this having been a Danish possession fades somewhat after over 100 years of separation. Why would anyone want to visit a Paradise Lost, one might say. But there are lasting mementoes of those days in handsome architecture as well as a rich documentation of the nearly 200-year colonial past. An amusing contribution to a sense of familiarity is the fact that many Crucians carry Danish last names like Larsen, Petersen, and Nielsen, as well as the continued use of classic Danish first names like Ebbe, Hans, Lauritz and Valdemar for males and Ingeborg, Agnete, Ingrid for females, signaling a lasting affiliation. A previous article mentioned our maintaining place and street names from Danish times, and the frequent display, even on government buildings, even on the Official Seal, of the Danish flag known as Dannebrog. Not surprisingly, this contributes to a feeling of being welcomed for any Danish visitor. But it is the addition of our natural environment with beautiful beaches and rolling hills of spectacular tropical vegetation, coupled with generally warm and sunny weather that will attract a typical Dane. Most travelers look for the thrill of exploring and savoring a location quite different from their normal habitat. While there are exotic locations elsewhere with even more spectacular scenery, St. Croix appears as a place that has enough of a civilized structure and does not pose a health risk. In Denmark, even during the brief summers in that northern country, you cannot be assured of pleasant weather, hence Danes are among the world’s most travel-active people, helped by the country’s generous six-week annual vacations and general prosperity. Last, but definitely not least, Crucians can take pride in being seen by the Danes as so friendly that many of those who visit here for the first time cannot wait to return here, and there are Danes known to have made twenty or more happy visits here. In view of the fact that the economy of most of the Danish colonial era was based on slavery, with its inhuman treatment of many thousands of persons brought here in chains from Africa to work in the sugar cane fields, the kindness shown by their descendants towards Denmark is remarkable. Recently, Denmark has contributed significant assistance in reconstructing damaged buildings to a state of being habitable after last year’s serious hurricane damage. Scholarships for university study in Denmark have been offered. And our local St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society celebrated the Danish Midsummer Festival on June 23 known as St. Hans Aften with a beach picnic and bonfire.

Island Weddings MARRY ME ON ST. CROIX!

Keep This, Ditch That!

My first wedding, as a child, was the 80s. It was all about shinny fabrics, pastels, and puffy sleeves. The ceremony was way too long, we had to travel a long way between venues, and then I tripped on the bride’s train spilling red punch on her dress! The reception was lively, filled with toasts, dancing, adult conversation, and your choice of chicken or fish. As I reflect on this, I realize that there have been few wedding innovations in over 30+ years. We have made vast achievements in lots of areas, but the wedding format remains the same. Maybe it’s our need for ritual that makes weddings feel more “official” when performed a certain way. Or maybe the wedding format is too perfect to change. I’m not sure, but I do feel change is good. With that in mind, here is my first installment of Keep This, Ditch That. This is my personal list of small innovations you can implement to put a spin on tradition while maintaining the ritual. Keep the meal, Ditch the entrees. Now we have access to all kinds of cuisine. Why not try something different to wow your guests? Hire a few food trucks or create a menu of small plates. Use this opportunity to be creative—make it personal. Keep the dress, Ditch the heft. If you plan to wed in the Caribbean, do yourself a favor and lighten your dress load, unless you enjoy the sauna experience! Keep friends, Ditch big bridal parties. Besides the exclusionary selection process, this tradition seems outdated as the original purpose of bridesmaids is rarely utilized today. Keep the seats, Ditch the layout. I have photographed weddings where the couple opted for halfmoon or full circle seating arrangements. Standing in the middle, everyone got a good view and the couple was surrounded by love. Keep dessert, Ditch tall layer cakes. Why have one dessert when you can have many? Try having a small cake for cutting and a dessert table for variety. There is no right way have a wedding—just make it yours and make it fun!

Watersports & Activities STEAL SOME TIME AND GET ON THE WATER!

Going for a Walk on Top of the Sea with Virgin Kayak Tours! “I moved to St.Croix in 1995 from Salisbury, Maryland. I was on a post graduate backpacking vacation,” says Jill Updyke, co-owner of Virgin Kayak Tours. “First stop was Key West, Florida, second stop was St. Croix. The first person I was introduced to was Bryan, my future husband; we married and raised our daughter on St. Croix. Bryan had moved to St. Croix in 1989 to invest in wrecked real estate after Hurricane Hugo. We got into the kayak business because we loved The Hobie Mirage foot-operated kayak line and opened Virgin kayak Tours in 1998. These kayaks are similar to a recumbent stair stepper on the deck, and have fins like a sea turtle under the boat. It’s just like going for a walk on top of the sea! And, anyone can do it; from 6 to 80-year-olds. The strong trade winds are not a problem with these boats, in fact, they can leave a wake behind them! We offer daytime History Tours of Salt

We also offer SUP tours and rentals and The Caribbean Arts and Crafts Museum, that we founded on the property, is open again, and free to anyone going out on a tour with us. There’s lots of Taino artifacts, dating from 900-1200 AD, collected in the 1960’s and 70’s throughout the Caribbean. We also commissioned The Caribs to create two canoes for us on display.

River Historical Park and Ecological Preserve and Bioluminescent Tours at night. The Salt River Tour is great for history buffs, as Bryan’s other passion is Pre-Columbian history and art; he’s like a walking encyclopedia! The Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Tours are extremely popular with us as the fins under the boat light up the bottom of the kayak like Hayley’s Comet is whizzing by!

Our family has reached the end of an era, as our daughter Bryanna used to help guide the kayak tours with us, and she has left island to attend college. Bryan and I are now ‘empty nesters,’ but we are looking forward to this new chapter in our lives. When I’m not kayaking, I am hiking up West Scenic or some less-travelled water gut, and Bryan enjoys studying turn of the century art, and collecting Art Nouveau and Deco artwork.”

TAKE THE PLUNGE—DIVE A WRECK, THE WALL, OR THE PIER! Teroro II and Dragonfly – 340-718-3161

Llewellyn’s Charter – 340-773-9027

Buck Island Charters, with Captain Heinz and his son Carl, is one of the oldest charter boat companies sailing to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Teroro II, a 42’ trimaran, is the first commercially built boat by Gold Coast Yachts at Salt River and chartered by Captain Heinz. Carl followed his father’s passion, after sailing and competing in his youth and after helping to captain Teroro II to Buck Island for 16 years, and now has is own boat Dragonfly, a 38’ trimaran. He and his father love to share their local knowledge with the guests aboard and give them a very personalized snorkeling tour of Buck Island Reef. We are recommended by Fromer’s Tour Guide and sail from Green Cay Marina.

Take a fast and exciting sail with local sailing legend and calypso recording artist Llewellyn Westerman aboard his 37-foot locally-designed and built, six-passenger performance trimaran Charis+. He’s been sailing to Buck Island National Monument since 1960 and assures a comfortable arrival to the beach or the first designated underwater National Park. Snorkel gear is provided. Departs from the St. Croix Yacht Club at Teague Bay 9 to 1:00 am, 1:30 to 5:30 pm, and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Personalized sails available. Call for more information and reservations

Michelle Pugh, a 39-year resident of St Croix, learned to dive in Los Angeles while high school and hasn’t stopped since! In 1992, along with Jacques Cousteau, she was inducted into the platinum Pro 5000 through SSI. In 2004, she was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Frame for being the first woman to dive with killer whales in the wilds of Canada, the first American woman to teach diving in Moscow, Russia and for establishing the mooring system on St Croix to protect the coral reefs. Michelle was also given the SBDC and Congressional Award for Entrepreneurial Success for Dive Experience. Sam Halvorson, Captain, Instructor, Dive Master, and Videographer, has been on board for 29 years. He knows the reefs like the back of his hand. His videos are a favorite souvenir! Skeeter, the dog, loves the dive boat and swimming with the divers. Michelle, who’s made over 10,000 dives on St. Croix, is the only dive center owner that actually dives most everyday—guiding lots of customers

by request. While developing the dive mooring sites, she has explored most St Croix reefs and walls. Michelle has also traveled the world just to dive—like the East coast of the US from Florida to Rhode Island, the West coast from Canada to Mexico, The Red Sea, Australia, Solomon IsSusan Wall lands, Borneo, Philippines, the Antarctic, and most of the Caribbean Islands. And, I recently returned from the Galapagos Islands! Dive Experience is St Croix’s first dive operator and the first PADI 5-star IDC center. They teach diving from novice to professional instructors. Located at Kings Alley on the boardwalk, their USCG-licensed dive boat is steps away on the dock. The full-service center features basic snorkel equipment to recreational and professional dive gear from Aqualung (US Divers) plus hats, towels, tees, Trudi Gilliam fish art and the largest Reef sandal selection on island. “With years in the business and my experience over time, I’d can say that Dive Experience is simply the best!” Advertisement

Golf is one sport that has lasted for many, many years. From players during the reign of Caesar in golf’s earliest stages to players like Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy of today. Golf has endured the test of time and has come through as an important sport in each part of the globe. Even though golf, as we know it today, can be traced back to Scotland in 1457, golf dates back to the time of Julius Caesar, where it was played by striking a featherstuffed ball with a club-shaped tree branch, and in the Song Dynasty in China during the years 960 to 1279. In Scotland, the game was outlawed by King James II as it detracted from the training for the military. Golf became a pastime in Great Britain in the seventeenth century; a familiar theme throughout the world at that time. In 1860, the first British Open, a tournament that is still played today, had taken place. The first permanent golf club in North America was founded in Montreal, Canada, in 1873 and was named “Canada’s Royal Montreal Club.” The US opened their first 18-hole course in the United States in The Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois, in 1893. The governing body of golf began as the United States Golf Association (USGA) in the year 1894. Then the current governing body of today, the Professional Golf Association of America, was founded in 1916. Both amateurs and professionals are allowed to play in open events like the US Open and the British Open, which are “open” to the public. Beginning in 1981, the name of the pro circuit was officially changed to the Tournament Players Association (TPA) Tour. The name was changed again to its current name of the Professional Golfers Association or the PGA tour. Tournament golf had become a well-established spectator sport in the United States by the 1920s and today even more popular through television and marketing. The sport of golf seems to have achieved a ‘forever’ quality. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

East End Sunset.

DRIVE SAFE— STAY LEFT Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic in the USVI flows from the left side of the road. St. Croix is 28 miles in length and 7 miles at the widest point with two major towns—Christiansted at the center on the north shore and Frederiksted at the west end. The Caribbean Sea which surrounds the island is always there to guide you along the roads that wind around the coast. Car rental agencies have a variety of vehicles available from sporty jeeps to roomy air-conditioned sedans, vans, and SUVs. The average price usually includes unlimited mileage but you fill the tank upon return! Both US and other driver’s licenses are recognized. The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts and cell phone talking or texting is not allowed. Parking in Christiansted is limited and 2-hour parking on parts of Company and Queen Cross Streets is enforced. Look for the signs. There is daytime parking in the National Park Service lot near Ft. Christiansvaern, until 4:30 pm, and a public lot with fees on Strand and King Cross Street. Major roads are asphalt and usually well maintained. The Melvin H. Evans Highway is the only 4-lane, divided highway running from mid-island west to within 1 mile of Frederiksted. The speed limit is 55. In other areas, the 35 mph limit applies; in town, 20 mph unless otherwise posted. Island Worship The history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. The Moravian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from Saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. The historic Anglican (Episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include St. John’s in Christiansted and, in Frederiksted, the beautifully restored St. Paul’s church. The large number of Irish settlers, along with Englishmen and Hispanics, have contributed to the presence of the Catholic church; Holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin Islands. The Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of Sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; Holy Trinity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded. The Dutch Reformed church (Presbyterian) now has a new mid-island home. These are just a few of the many (over 150) churches on St. Croix, from SeventhDay Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and many more. Church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population; visitors are always welcome at services, often a high point in their island experience. Many other faiths offer places of worship—a Jewish synagogue, a Hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few. An easy-to-follow guide is actually the yellow pages of our local phone book beginning on Page 54. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

Befolkningen. Virgin Islands befolkning er venlig men tilbageholdende. Man hilser gerne med “Good morning”, “Good Afternoon” og “Good Night.” Tider. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig.

Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne. Helligdage. Her fejrer man amerikanske helligdage foruden en hel del lokale. THIS NATIONAL PARK COMMEMORATES OUR DANISH HERITAGE (1733-1917).

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHRISTIANSTED at the site of the Old Scale House 1 on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Fort Christiansvaern 3 was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period.

Originally, Government House 6 on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Lutheran Church 7 across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added. Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall 8 on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm. Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market 9 , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors. Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park 2. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader. The Oscar E. Henry Customs House 3 was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain 4, facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation 150th Anniversary Celebration. After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in63 Victorian style. Victoria House 5, on Strand Street, and Apothecary Hall 6, on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets, preserve the Frederksted architecture of that time. Both received storm damage in September. The Visitor’s Bureau 7, is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts 8. Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 9, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 10, Friedensberg Moravian Church 11, and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church 12. The newly restored Old Danish School 13, on Hospital Street and Market Street, is a handsome building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library 14, built in 1803. The Market Place 15, is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

Before The Centennial Legacy Project, There Was This… Part 3 in a series by Apple Gidley Oral story-telling has a strong history on St. Croix - stories told from generation to generation - indeed the backbone of the Landmark Society’s “Come Home to St Croix” program. These stories of our past help us understand the present and build for the future. That is what the Centennial Legacy Project is undertaking. The restoration of the Old Army BarEdwin Taylor Pollock. racks on Hospital Street in Christiansted, which in its new guise would serve as the Center for Architecture and Built Heritage.

Henri Konow.

Buildings tell stories too. Through their construction but also through the different roles they have played in society. One such set of buildings are those Old Army Barracks - Numbers 21 - 23 Hospital Street - which originally dated back to 1759 when they were the garrison hospital and matron’s residence.

Perhaps it was the thwarted mutiny of September 1835, as described by William F. Cissel in his Vignettes of Danish Military History, when infantrymen, angry at the reimposition of military discipline after some years of complaisance, planned to seize the colonial coffers and sail for North America aboard the shanghaied naval brig St. Jan, that prompted Governor-General Peter von Scholten to extend the complex and house troops there rather than in Fort Christiansvaern. 1836 is Juan Francisco Luis. inscribed on entrances both on Hospital Street and possibly on Church Street which could lead one to assume that is when the extension, including the addition of galleries, was built by slaves under the direction of Albert Løvmand, a Danish architect.

Sylvia Ross Talbot.

Ullmont James.

At some stage between 1900 and 1910, 23 Hospital Street had become the residence of Captain Herman Osterman, the Christiansted commander and police inspector, and it was then the dormer attics were replaced with a third story. During the same period an administrative building was built behind the officer’s mess. Then in 1914, arson! Captain Jørgen Høyer, who commanded the West Indian Gendarmery Corps, was found to have been diddling the barrack’s payroll books to cover European gambling debts. Threatened by news of his replacement charged with conducting a thorough inspection, the Captain torched the office. The fire spread to engulf the entire barracks complex though by providence no one was killed. Due to the instinctive mistrust of Sergeant-Major August F. C. Newmann, who noted a discrepancy in size of a cigar box proffered by our good captain acting the genial and arrogant host, Captain Høyer was found to have secreted money in the false bottom. His punishment,12 years hard labor back in Denmark.

At 3:30 pm, March 31st, 1917 - Transfer Day Danish gendarmes marched from the army barracks on Hospital Street to watch the lowering Eileen Romona Petersen. of the Dannebrog at Fort Christiansvaern as US w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

The Centennial Legacy Project: In-Search-of-Identity, a joint venture between the USVI Government and Denmark, aims to conserve / rejuvenate / repurpose the Old Army Barracks on Hospital Street in Christiansted to become the Center for Architecture and Built Heritage.

Marines watched the raising of the Stars and Stripes. Perhaps the latter marched back to their new quarters after Transfer Day. In any event the barracks continued to be used for various military purposes until the walls of these historic buildings took on a new role in 1935, when they became Christiansted High School. A number of prominent Crucians either taught or graduated from there. Leonie E. Christian, David “Junie” Canegata, and from 1941 to 1953 when Claude O. Markoe was the principal. Some of those graduating from CHS were: Ullmont James, the first Assistant Government Secretary in the VI Government Service under both Governor John D. Merwin and Governor Ralph Paiewonsky, then served as a diplomat in Guinea, Madagascar, Somalia and Morocco; Dr. Sylvia Talbot Ross graduated in 1950 and ended her career as Minister for Health in Guyana; Horace Clark, also a graduate, went on to play baseball for the New York Yankees; Edna-Mae Coff Belardo became Assistant Administrator, Division of Disabilities and Rehabilitation Services and had been taught by Mr. Markoe, as well as her mother Edna Bolling Coff. Brenda D. Henderson, a student at CHS, reminisced in Karen Thurland’s The Neighborhoods of Christiansted 1910 - 1960 about Cookie, an elderly, petite woman who set up a stall each afternoon under the barrack’s gallery to sell skewered gooseberries, sugar cakes, dondeslas (hard crystallized sugar and peanut candy) and lasenja (twisted candy, usually minted). 1969 saw yet another iteration of the army barracks when 21 Hospital Street became offices for the Department of Labour and No. 23 became a police station. In 1999 the former building, with everything in it, was suddenly closed after unexplained symptoms presented to those working there. Hurricane Hugo tore the roof off 23 Hospital Street in 1989, and over the intervening 29 years the building has been claimed by vegetation and allowed to crumble. The restoration, renovation and repurposing of the old army barracks in Christiansted is one such way in which to remember the past, embrace the present and prepare for the future. As Maj. Dalsgaard, a professor from the Aarhus School of Architecture said when presenting to middle school students on St Croix in 2016, “Everything built tells a story how people lived. This project is about identity, and St Croix and Denmark’s shared history.” Correction: The estimated cost for this project, and the one on St. Thomas, is $20 million not the previously stated $40 million. Apple Gidley lives in Christiansted and is a freelance writer and author of the historical novel Fireburn, set on St Croix in the 1870s.

Make It A Spa Day!

Unwind and pamper yourself.

Spa, meaning fountain and derived from the name of the town of Spa in Belgium, is a popular destination all over the world and St. Croix is no exception. Let’s dive into some of the specialty treatments that you can take advantage of right here on island. Deep Tissue Massage Therapy is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension and reducing stress hormone levels and heart rate while boosting mood and relaxation and improving posture. This type of massage reaches the deepest layer of muscles and tendons, breaking down tense areas that may cause pain and inflammation, limiting motion of the muscles and joints. Aromatherapy uses natural oils extracted from flowers and plants to enhance psychological and physical wellbeing. Benefits include its ability to reduce anxiety, ease depression, boost energy levels, speed up the healing process, eliminate headaches, boost cognitive performance, induce sleep, strengthen the immune system, reduce pain, improve digestion and increase circulation. Reflexology uses pressure to the feet and hands with thumb, finger, and hand techniques and without the use of oil or lotion, to help organs and glands via the body’s energetic pathways. In use for thousands of years, benefits include stimulating nerve function, increasing energy, boosting circulation, inducing a deep relaxation, and eliminating toxins from the body. Body Wraps are a pampering experience to improve the texture and appearance of the skin by helping to rid the body of excess fluids and toxins. Benefits include detoxification, boosting of the lymphatic system and metabolism, body contouring, skin tightening and softening, and balance depending on the type of wrap chosen—aroma, seaweed, sea salt, and others. Facials are a skin care treatment for the face using steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, facial masks, peels, and massage. They deeply cleanse and help fight certain skin problems, such as mild acne or dryness. Treatments leave faces glowing and are typically very relaxing, as they include a massage component. A sauna is a room designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions and has a strong impact on your health and well-being. The heat relieves stress, relaxes muscles, soothes aches and pains, cleanses the skin, induces a deeper sleep, improves cardiovascular performance, burns calories, and helps fight illness by boosting the immune system; emerge relaxed and revived! w w w.stcroix thisweek.com

he Sun seems to shine every day in the Virgin Islands, but on September 22nd the Sun will shine directly over the Earth’s equator. This is the equinox and day and night will be about equal all over the Earth. It is first day of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Once the Sun has set and the sky begins to grow dark in July and August, look for the bright star-like object dominating the western sky – this is the planet Venus. By September, Venus will be lower in the sky and by October it will no longer be visible in the western sky. A somewhat less bright Jupiter will be high in the western sky. Jupiter is seen against the background of faint stars of Libra, the Scales. Saturn will be high in the eastern sky, east of the red star Antares. The red planet Mars will be lower in the eastern sky, seen against the stars of Capricorn. In September, Saturn will be very high in the east and Mars will be slightly lower. By October, Jupiter will be low in the west at sunset, Saturn will be very high in the west, and Mars high in the eastern sky. After the sky is fully dark you should be able to easily spot three bright stars which Page 64 • August / September 2018

form a large triangle. Since the triangle is visible all night long during the Summer up north, it is called the Summer Triangle. Each bright star marks a different star group or constellation. Farthest West is Vega, part of Lyra the Harp. In mythology this is the harp invented by Hermes, which Mercury gave to Orpheus, the musician who joined Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. To the South is Altair, in Aquila the Eagle. Aquila was the bird of Jove and the bearer of his thunder. It is impossible to take the fainter stars that join with Altair and really make an Eagle out of this part of the heavens. The third bright star is Deneb, marking the tail of Cygnus, the Swan. Perhaps you can see other stars which form the Swan’s body, neck and head and its wings which spread wide. Cygnus is flying south along the Milky Way. The Milky Way looks like a hazy band of light arcing across the sky. According to one legend, Phaethon, the son of the sun-god Helios, created the Milky Way when he set the sky on fire with his father’s sun-chariot. It is really the light from billions and billions of stars so far away, that all we see is their light combined into this haze.

Facing south you’ll again find the red star Antares. Antares is the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Perhaps you can find the fainter stars that make up the Scorpion’s long curved tail. The Scorpion’s claws are formed from still fainter stars spreading out toward the southwestern horizon. While these faint stars do form the Scorpion’s claws, they are actually the stars of another constellation, Libra, the Scales. “Shooting stars”, more properly meteors, are flashes of light that happen so quickly that by the time you tell a friend “look there”, the meteor will be gone. Meteors are caused by pebble sized bits of rock burning up as they pass through the air some 50 miles above the Earth. The bright light of the nearly Full Moon will block out all but the brightest meteors on the night of July 28th to 29th, the maximum of the Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower. August 12th to 13th is the maximum of one of the best meteor showers, the Perseids, which produces up to 60 meteors per hour. Once again, the nearly Full Moon will block many of the fainter meteors of the Orionid Meteor Shower which peaks on the night of October 21st to 22nd. w w w.stcroix thisweek.com
