Building a modern farmhouse Looking from Highway 59 north of Morris, Toby and Lisa Perkins’ new home looks like an old farm house. The inside is a mix of the old and new, combining elements like a two-story great room with vintage-inspired woodwork designed and built by their family.
Story and photos by Kim Ukura/Sun Tribune
Two years before they planned to move to Morris, just after Toby signed his contract with Stevens Community Medical Center, the family came to Morris looking for a farm site where they could build a home. “We wanted an old farm site, ideally, not just land, so we had a story,” said Lisa. “We had been talking to farmers and knocking on doors and were finally blessed enough to find someone who was interested in selling,” said Toby. Eventually, the Perkinses came to an
agreement with George Nagl in October 2012 to purchase the land, including the farmhouse that Nagl grew up in. The family – Toby, Lisa, eight-year-old Mason, fiveyear-old Alayna, and two-year-old Brinley – continued to live in a rental property outside of town until April 2013 when they could move into the Nagl farmhouse. For 10 months, the family of five lived in tight quarters in the farmhouse. The home had just one large bedroom attached to a small bedroom that the kids all shared. Despite the size, Toby said the house kept
them safe and warm and made it easy for them to keep working on their new home. By March 2014, the house had a roof and heat and beds – enough necessities for the family to officially move in while finishing continued. Unfortunately, the 1800s era farmhouse was torn down last Friday, April 18 because it was too badly damaged – something everyone, including Nagl, agreed on. “I wanted more than anything to be able to do something with it, but you just couldn’t – it was in too bad of shape,” said Toby.

The best place... for quality hardware & rental equipment Toby and Lisa said they always hoped to build a new home because Lisa’s father, Lannie Ashling, is a contractor – “I’ve seen him build houses my whole life,” said Lisa. “We wanted to live in a house that he built. … It’s a dream that I’ve always had, but I didn’t know if it would actually happen before he would quit or be done building houses.” Lannie and Lisa’s mother, Brenda, were responsible for most of the design of the house, based on a few general requests from Toby and Lisa – a two story house with kids rooms on the second floor and an open foyer. All of the doors face the open foyer so the kids’ rooms feel connected to the rest of the house. “They just started drawing it, then we’d look at it and
worked through it together,” said Lisa. Lannie drew out the blueprint for the house in pencil, which was used throughout the construction process. The Perkinses still have the plans, which they plan to frame and hang up in the house. Another plan for the house was to have all of the necessities – kitchen, laundry room, master bedroom and bathroom and living room – on the main floor of the house so they could “live here forever,” said Lisa. “We don’t plan on moving again.” The dining room is also large, built looking ahead to a time when there will be an even bigger family sitting around the table.

The main staircase in the great room is one of the major focal points of the house. Lannie designed and built the entire structure himself starting with raw lumber. Both Lisa and Lannie love old houses, so the design of the trim mimics those features. Starting from raw lumber also offered opportunities for unique trim designs. The trim along the foyer in the main entry is made from 16 inch pieces of wood that were 16 feet long as part of the delivery, said Toby. “We talked about doing a one-story house, but I really wanted one of his staircases,” said Lisa.
All of the woodwork inside the house was custom made by Lisa’s dad, Lannie. Toby, Lisa and other family members spent hundreds of hours staining and varnishing every door and every piece of trim that needed to be installed. Together, Toby and Lisa laid the wood floors. Submitted Photo

One of the appeals of the property is the 23 acres around the site. After planting grass and landscaping near the house, the Perkinses plan to plant a new shelter belt on the west side and put the land outside the trees into the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). “With the water, a slough for hunting, and the wildlife – we like wildlife – it’s really just perfect,” said Lisa. The orientation of the house also connects to the land. Most homes that have an open great room situate them on the back of the house, but the Perkinses wanted the room to have lots of light and great views towards the slough and grasses out the front of the house. The kitchen, located near the back of the house and open to the dining room, also gets plenty of natural sunlight from the dining room bay windows. Mason, Alayna and Brinley all have rooms on the second floor. Mason’s room has the best view in the house, looking to the south towards town. Alayna and Brinley both have walk-in closets with custom built storage units. This week, they’ll be adding antique, cast iron bed frames for each one.

Adding a functional family room When Terry and Jill Dybdahl bought their home in July 2008, they knew they wanted to make some updates to modernize the style and layout. In the fall of 2012 they started on a major renovation project – taking down the damaged back deck and replacing it with a functional and bright family room. “It’s really opened up the space when we have people over to the house – it’s more of an open concept house,” said Jill.

Jill said she gathered ideas for the design of the room online. She and Terry knew they wanted a room with a big fireplace and lots of windows, and worked with Hooter’s Lumber to develop the final plans. The Dybdahls worked with Brustuen Construction during the build in the summer of 2013.

The Dybdahls met with Dennis Bitzan with Bitzan/Ohren Masonry and the staff at Alex Brick and Stone to design and install the fireplace, a major visual element in the new room. The fireplace is covered with real stone, marbella ledgestone, and features a copper, natural gas fireplace from Fireplace Xtrordinair. The mantle and seat of the fireplace, as well as the window ledges, are made of winona travertine. The Dybdahls chose Pella windows with dark fiberglass trim from Cullen’s Home Center. They chose these windows to be low maintenance – no wood to stain or future moisture damage on the sills. The tall and wide windows on all of the walls let the family enjoy the views of their yard.

In addition to being a focal piece of the room, the fireplace also offers hidden storage cabinets for games, DVDs and electronics on each side, an idea Jill found when she was doing online research. The major construction on the addition was completed by May 2013, just in time for a graduation party. However, the new hardwood floors didn’t get installed until June. To help connect the addition with the rest of the house, the Dybdahls also replaced the hardwood floors in their kitchen and dining room.

The addition takes the place of a deck, which the Dybdahls said was damaged and difficult to use. Given its location, it got too much sun to be enjoyable in the summer. They took the damaged deck down in the fall of 2012 so they were ready for construction that spring, said Terry.
The new, smaller deck is home for their grill and is in a more shaded location on the north side of the house. This summer, the Dybdahls have plans to work with Northern Impressions of Morris to add a patio and additional landscaping to the backyard. “Our whole point is so we can see the yard – we think it’s so pretty with all the trees, we want to be able to see it from the house too,” said Jill. “Hopefully they can cure all the yard problems from construction,” added Terry.
