Entering Open Class Exhibits It is time to begin thinking about what you will enter in the Open Class Division at the Stevens County Fair. Be it your favorite picture you took this past year, a quilt you made, sewing, knitting, or tatting. Perhaps it’s a favorite craft project you have completed or those beautiful flowers you have. Do you have a big tomato and other vegetables from your garden or tasty, tempting baking and canning you do? We’d love to put them on display and see what prize you get awarded. Anyone from preschooler to senior citizen is eligible to enter. Our Premium List includes entry lots for many types of exhibits – from farm crops, fruits, vegetables, and flowers, to canned and baked goods, to beautiful quilts and needlework, to impressive photographs. Children are invited to show their creativity and talents with arts and crafts projects, collections, baking, gardening, or photography. There are new changes in Open Class….We will be utilizing a new computer program so the listing looks a bit different. Be sure to read carefully before bringing your entries. Please have your exhibit numbers written down before coming to the building or better yet – Pre-register by e-mailing your entry listing to info@scfair.net Entry day for Open Class is Wednesday, August 12th. You may bring your exhibits in from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entries for “open class” animals will also be Wednesday, August 12 BUT the animals will not be brought to the fairgrounds until Thursday, August 13. You may pre-register on-line by emailing us at info@scfair.net by Tuesday, August 11 – 6 p.m. or use the form included in this booklet. If you have more than 20 exhibits, please enter them before 2 p.m Wednesday. All entries must be ready to be displayed at entry time. If you are entering flowers this year, we provide white vases (tall and short) to display your entries. Please leave a generous length of stem on your entry. Please check the premium lot numbers carefully to be sure you have your exhibits entered into the correct division and class #. Only ONE entry per class is allowed. The rules are listed at the top of the Premium list. Several entries in various classes are chosen as Best of Show award winners.

Transit Authority, a Chicago Tribute Band, will hit the Band Shell at 6:45 p.m. and take you along on a high energy sonic journey back in time, starting with some of the very first mega-hits such as Make Me Smile, Does Anybody Know What Time it is and Question 67 & 68, into the eighties with wonderful ballads like Hard To Say I’m Sorry/Get Away, and Hard Habit to Break. Transit Authority has become known throughout the U.S. and abroad as the premier tribute band to the iconic group Chicago. 2015 Medallion clues via Social Media Some lucky person could be the recipient of $50 in Morris Chamber Cash if they can find the Stevens County Fair Medallion that has been hidden somewhere on the fairgrounds. A clue is given out each day online at our website, facebook and twitter, starting Wednesday, August 12. For 2015 again the first clues will be on our website, social media and posted on the clue board on the grounds later each day. Some days 2014 winner Kellen Erdahl with help from there MAY be more than one clue Bradley Rohloff and Kurtis Kill that is given out so make sure you stay in touch. As things change, the fair is also using more social media to get the info out to fairgoers. The medallion will be in reach and you do not have to dig or climb to find it. Happy hunting to find the Medallion which is about the size of a 50 cent piece.
Fair moves forward with Social Media As times and the world changes we are trying to keep up with the times at the Stevens County Fair. We have had the website at www.scfair.net for many years and have posted many thing on Facebook this past year but we will now also be using Facebook, Twitter and You Tube. This year our fair website has taken on a new refined look. We hope that things are even easier for you to find on it. This year all our forms on the web site can be filled out online then printed. This makes in much easier for not only you but helps us in being able to read what is on the form. As we kick off the 2015 fair watch for many great things and chances for giveaways that you will only find online on our social media sites.

Camping at the Fair If you have been at the fair in the past you may have seen the camping area. What better way to enjoy the fair than camping right where all the action is. You can ask any of the campers at the fair and they will all tell you it is the best thing they have done. With all the fun that happens late night at the fair maybe it’s time that you just hook onto that camper and bring it to the fairgrounds. As the fairboard works to improve the grounds, the camping area is just another one of the great things to enjoy. Spaces are more limited each year as we have more people that find how nice it is to bring that camper in and stay for the week. Most people that have camped in the past say it’s the only way to go! You enjoy the fair so much more with that chance to rest or just sit and visit with friends at your campsite then go back for more fair fun. With security on the grounds all night it is a place you can feel safe even if weather threatens during the night. Rates are low from free if you wish to just pop that tent to a low $75 for the full week at the fair with water and electrical. If you are a 4-H or FFA Family we even give you a break its just $65. You do not want to wait too long as many rebook each year so spots fill fast. It is simple and easy to do just go online at www.scfair.net then go to forms and fill out the online camping form, print and mail it in. If online is not an option for you just call the fair office at 320-589-1062.
Upgrades continue at the Fairgounds New things you can see at the fair as you walk around the grounds for 2015. Thanks to the help from lots of local people and businesses that make things happen. Take your time as you walk around to see some new changes. Indoor lighting for exhibit buildings was on our list this year. Some things that get upgraded each year you may not see but I think this will catch your eye in 2015. Just like at home you always have things to upgrade and repair and the fairground is no different. In past years we have upgraded the exterior of the 4-H Exhibit, Open Class and Homemakers buildings. The wash rack area for the livestock and staging area for judging just to highlight a few. There are always many more changes that took place since last year’s fair and the Stevens County Fairboard works hard to keep your grounds looking good and making updated needed changes to make this a fun event and something we are both proud of when you come out to the fair.

Stevens County Homemakers
PAGE 11
Welcome to Helmets For Kids!
The Stevens County Homemakers consist of eight clubs with 82 members. The homemakers take turns meeting in members’ homes once a month fall through spring. Some clubs meet during the summer. Each club sends one or two of their members to the lesson planning for the month. The Stevens County Homemakers has a board called the Home Council. Each club has a counselor and a co-counselor. The counselor sits on the Home Council and the Home Council makes decisions for all the clubs. If the counselor can’t attend for some reason, then the co-counselor usually attends. The Home Council meets in November, April, and July. The counselor and co-counselor each are expected to join a committee. These committees are County Fair, Lesson Planning, and Recognition Banquet. Fair time is very important to the Homemakers and they have their own building on the fair grounds. Each member is asked to exhibit at least one item in the fair and some members enter 30 or more items. Members of the clubs help out at the fair in many ways such as: entering exhibits, decorating the building, being judging assistants, and displaying items once they are judged. Fair time is something that the Homemakers look forward too and enjoy every year.
Helmets For Kids is an organization created by Mike Heikes to provide kids with bicycle helmets to help prevent brain injuries. Mike Heikes is a brain injury survivor himself and five-time cross-country bicyclist. Since the program was started in 1999, Mike has fitted and given away over 10,000 bicycle helmets to kids all across the country–most of them in Minnesota and North Dakota. Mike also speaks in schools, churches and organizations to tell everyone his story and how they can prevent a serious brain injury like his. Come and visit with Mike at the Lee Center on Saturday, August 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. and have an opportunity to purchase his book, Finding Purpose, an autobiography about one man’s journey from a severe brain injury to becoming a cross-country bicyclist and bicycle helmet advocate.

Stevens County Ag Society recognizes Libbon for years of dedication The Stevens County Ag Society would like to recognize a long time member of the Stevens County Fairboard. George Libbon has been a member since 1990. He is very active with the Open Class department. In the pre-fair season, he can be found working in the Open Class building repairing or making new exhibit stands and doing general set up. A few days before the fair, George’s wife, Shirley will come to the fairgrounds and help the rest of the open class crew to clean up the display cases. On the day that Open Class items are entered, George and Shirley help with the open class vegetables and field crops section. Together they make sure that the exhibits are tagged properly and arranged according to division. Once the judging is done, George and Shirley take each exhibit and arrange them attractively on the shelves and tables according to the division. When their section is in place, they are busy helping to get the rest of the open class exhibits displayed. Their work is not yet done; they take turns manning the open class building during the run of the fair. We thank George and Shirley for their many years of service to the Stevens County Fair and we appreciate you both very much.

Are you ready for this? A four foot high, talking horse named Harold will be appearing at the Stevens County Fair. In actuality, it is Homeward Bound Theatre Company presenting one of Alfy’s “World of Robotic Puppets.” These fun-filled life size puppets will be roaming the grounds of the Stevens County Fair, charming everyone from 2 to a 102. Different puppet characters will be making their joyous appearance to unsuspecting visitors to the fair. Through the “magic” of radio control, these life-like puppets will be visiting and sharing jokes and quips with unsuspecting fair goers. Alfy’s “World of Robotic Puppets” received praises across the United States with appearances in fairs from the northern reaches of Minnesota to the southern borders of Arizona. They have also been featured at the Mall of America, St. Paul Saint’s Baseball, benefits, and numerous trade shows, and events for seniors and youth. Their version of an Irish leprechaun has been the hit of the various St. Patrick’s parades. The Stevens County Fair runs daily from August 12 through August 16.

Rad Zoo at the Stevens County Fair Area animal lovers will have the chance to meet some scaly new friends at the Stevens County Fair as we have invited Owatonna’s RAD Zoo to come to our fair. The Reptile & Amphibian Discovery Zoo is one of the world’s largest reptile displays, showcasing more than 150 kinds of animals from around the world. RAD Zoo trainers travel throughout Minnesota more than 100 times a year to share about these animals, bringing several animals with them for kids and parents to learn about and touch. After talking about the various animals that they will bring, kids will have a chance to get a closer look, even touching the animals. The Zoo’s director says it’s important for kids to be able to learn about the reptiles and amphibians so they can understand and appreciate them better. By allowing kids to have a chance to have a personal experience with the reptiles, they’re more likely to appreciate them and work towards their conservation,”. This is a return visit for the RAD Zoo to the Stevens County Fair and we hope fairgoers will enjoy visiting this exhibit. The RAD Zoo will be set up in the Lee Community Center all five days of the fair.

Master glass artist: Jon Offutt One look at a piece of art created by North Dakota glassblower Jon Offutt and it is evident he is a master at his craft. You might expect that a glass artist working with materials heated to temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit would be apprehensive about having visitors in their workspace; however, Offutt is very comfortable creating beautiful glasswork in front of an audience. In fact, he travels around the region with a mobile studio Offutt’s passion for teaching and entertaining the public with his craft is evident. He effortlessly makes visitors feel at home and comfortable. Offutt has been working with glass a little over 30 years. He has dabbled with other mediums, including ceramics and wood, but prefers the immediacy of glassblowing. Offutt said he could spend weeks working on a piece of pottery and wouldn’t know how it would turn out until the final glazing and firing, but with glass he knows nearly right away how a color combination or technique will look and can make adjustments to his process right away. Jon Offutt – House of Mulciber will be at the Stevens County Fair on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and will have scheduled demonstration times.

Youth showcase a year of 4-H learning at Stevens County Fair At the 2015 Stevens County Fair, more than 200 youth from Stevens County will showcase the learning and achievements they have accomplished in 4-H at the Stevens County Fair. 4-H at Minnesota county fairs are not just fun annual events. Every summer, tens of thousands of 4-H youth participate in county fairs to showcase the knowledge and skills they've gained throughout the year, and to continue their learning experiences. 4-H youth spend months working on projects designed to equip them with essential life skills such as problem solving, decision making, project management, communications and public speaking. 4-H’ers then share their accomplishments and educate the public about their subject at their local county fair. The projects of the 4-Hers are displayed throughout the fairgrounds in the 4-H Exhibit Building and the many 4-H Livestock Barns. The highlights for 2015 include the Rube Goldberg Machine project in the 4-H Building, the Fan Favorite projects in the 4-H Building, and of course, the many livestock shows! County fairs not only make great memories, they help 4-H youth grow into successful adults. “One of 4-H’s priorities is to provide learning and leadership experiences that guide youth in building relationships, developing communication techniques, and strengthening organizational skills,” said Dorothy M. Freeman, Extension Center for Youth Development Associate Dean and State 4-H Director. “Through these experiences, youth find the leaders within themselves and are able to make a positive impact in their club, home, school or community.” So be sure to stop by and check out all of the 4-H projects while enjoying the 2015 Stevens County Fair! To learn more about 4-H in Stevens County, contact 4-H Program Coordinator Kirstin Koch at 320-208-6575 or visit www.fourh.umn.edu.

Come on out on Saturday and enjoy one or more of their shows along with a lot of other free entertainment.

Introducing to you the Horton 4-H Club Horton 4-H is a club from Stevens County, made up of 29 members from 15 families. This year Horton has chosen Shop as a club project. To learn more about the shop project, the members have toured Superior Industries, the Morris Area High School wood shop and the Morris Area High School metal shop. Several members even tried their hand at welding. One club shop project included the members making a glove drying rack, which came in useful during the winter. Another meeting included a game to learn more about different shop tools. Community Pride is very important to the Horton 4-H Club. This year’s Community pride activities include: road ditch pickup, planting a flower garden at the DAC and food shelf, making meal favors for Skyview, ringing Salvation Army bells, purchasing Christmas Gifts for the Wish Tree, and collecting for Toys for Tots. One especially fun event this year was our Wizard of Oz skit for Share-the-Fun, we were excited to receive first place! Horton 4-H encourages its members to use correct Parliamentary Procedure at club meetings, to gain experience in conducting meetings. 4-H members of Horton 4-H are also encouraged to give a demonstration to the others. This is an excellent way to gain experience in talking in front of others and gaining ideas from other members. Many of Horton’s members are active with livestock projects including beef, sheep, swine and goats. This is sure to keep Horton’s members very busy this summer. As an appreciation to the Stevens County Fair Board, Horton has taken on a task of selling Stevens County Fair Buttons each year!

Transit Authority at Storck Bandshell Thursday Transit Authority will take you along on a high energy sonic journey back into time, starting with some of the very first megahits such as Make Me Smile, Does Anybody Know What Time It Is, and Questions 67 & 68, into the eighties with wonderful ballads like Hard To Say I'm Sorry / Get Away, and Hard Habit to Break. Transit Authority's performances are so dynamic and energetic that you are reminded yes, horns truly belong in rock & roll! Brass and wood-winds merging seamlessly with drums, bass, keyboards, and gutsy guitar form an air-tight rhythm section completing the band with all the textures, rhythms, riffs, fills, and great vocals that recreates perfectly the legendary sound of Chicago. One of many things that have always set the Chicago sound apart from other horn bands has been their trombone leading horn section. Transit Authority has assembled some amazingly gifted horn players whom meticulously capture all the nuances of the original recordings. See Transit Authority at the Stevens County Fair on Thursday evening at the Storck Bandshell.

Tripwire at Storck Bandshell on Saturday of the fair This band is made up of four amazing guys with enough energy to fill any venue you could throw at them! The end of the night always comes too soon when you're witnessing the on stage spectacle that is "Tripwire." With four-part harmonies pulsing through four decades of rock and roll, over ten different instruments (harmonica, violin, trumpet, sax, and yes even a cowbell). Tripwire brings intensity, integrity, and creativity to the mid-west music scene. You'll be asking yourself "What could they possibly do next?!?" “It’s rock, country, a little bit of hip hop, even a polka here and there.” “It’s a fantastic variety, with our twist on it with a bunch of different instruments” says Mark Arneson a member of the band. That kind of variety lends itself to Tripwire’s live shows, which Arneson says are often marked by the band members playing off of each other’s energy. “The rest of us will catch on, and it’ll just add to our show,” “It keeps things interesting for us, because you never know what to expect.” This is one band that the Stevens County Fairboard do not want you to miss! Come and see them at the Storck Bandshell on Saturday, August 15, beginning at 8 p.m.

2015 Demo Derby adds Lawn Mower Class In an effort to add more action to the Demo Derby this year the Stevens County Fair Bank of the West Demo will be adding a Lawn Mower Class to the Demo. Yes, riding lawnmowers a low input cost class for you to be part of the action. The rules are short and simple with safety to the rider is the number one concern. The decks are removed from the mower and safety bars are added to protect the driver. It’s just like the auto demo, you crash and try to wreck the other guys or gals. With an effort to get more lawnmower drivers Stevens County has teamed up with the Big Stone County Fair to help both fairs get drivers that want to give this a try. This class will kick off the 2015 Bank of the West Demo Derby Sunday Night at 6 PM August 16th. You can find the rules online at www.scfair.net then click on the forms page and find the rules.
