A perfect pie is something that just about every baker wants to be able to put together. Pie is a great dish with an unbeatable combination of laky dough and rich illing – whether you’re making luscious fruit pies or hearty savory pies. One way to get better at pie making is practice. The other way to get better is to get tips from someone who really knows what they’re doing when it comes to making and baking pies. This pie making class will give you both opportunities. Lorna has been making cakes and pies for over 40 years. At the end of the class, you will get to eat the pies that were baked and you will get to take one home! The knowledge gained from this class will also get you ready to amaze your family at Thanksgiving. This will be a deliciously enjoyable class. Sign up early as class space is limited.

Early Childhood Screening—Has Your Child Been Screened? Parents of 3 to 4 year old children Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how children are developing between the ages of 3 to 4 years. It identi ies, at an early stage, possible learning or health concerns so that children can get the help they need before starting school. Early Childhood Screening is not an IQ test or a kindergarten entrance exam, although Morris Area PreKindergarten classes require that screening be done within 90 days of program entry and it is required by state law for children before they can begin in kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening only needs to be completed once. Screening is a free review of your child’s vision, hearing, height, weight, overall development, and immunization records. For the Morris Area schools, children are screened at Horizon Public Health by a nurse. Watch for an information packet in the mail shortly after your child turns three-and-a-half years of age. If you do not receive a packet, call the Public Health of ice at 320-208-6672 to set up the day and time for your child’s screening. For more information contact Diane Strobel at 320-585-2237 or dstrobel@morris.k12.mn.us or Horizon Public Health at 320-208-6672.

From the Desk of Rick Lahn A Message from the Superintendent As the weather begins to turn cooler and the days get shorter, it is a sure sign that the start of school is right around the corner. Throughout the summer, faculty and staff have been busy preparing for an exciting year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our hard working custodial staff for all they have done to make certain our buildings are clean, safe and ready for the new school year. Their efforts are truly appreciated. While I have been on the job only a few short months, I know Morris Area is truly an amazing place. The community is clearly supportive of our students and that makes all the difference. Please know that I am much honored to be selected as your next superintendent of schools. I look forward to working together with our school board to ensure that every child attending the Morris Area School system receives a world class educational experience. I come to you with over twenty years of school and district leadership experience serving the communities of Sartell, Princeton and Alexandria. I sincerely appreciate the warm welcome I have received from the community and I look forward to meeting each of you soon. “NEW” is our theme this school year. We welcome Mr. Bill Kehoe as our new High School Principal. Mr. Kehoe is a native of Chokio, MN and comes to us from Dawson/Boyd where he served as High School Principal. Mr. Kehoe resides in Morris and has one child attending the Morris Area Schools. Please join me in congratulating our Elementary Principal, Mr. Ken Gagner as he has been selected as the new Superintendent of Schools for the Braham, MN School District. We thank Mr. Gagner for his dedication and years of service to the Morris Area Schools. We wish him the best of luck in his new position. The search to ind a new Principal for Morris Area Elementary School is underway. We are attracting a strong pool of candidates and hope to have our new principal in place no later than mid-September. Throughout the search process, I will serve as the acting Principal at Morris Area Elementary School. I know the terri ic staff at MAES will be ready to assist me in ensuring we get off to a great start with our elementary students. Our District-Wide Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August 27th, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. We welcome all community residents to visit our schools and learn more about the exciting opportunities available for our students. Should you have any questions or concerns, never hesitate to contact us. By working together, we can achieve our vision of becoming the inest school district in western Minnesota! Warm Regards, Rick Lahn, Superintendent

Morris Area Elementary The Morris Area School District is excited to welcome you back for the 2015—2016 school year. The faculty and staff are once again busy preparing the school and classrooms for an inspiring time of learning and growth. Student success is the goal of all staff members at Morris Area. We are committed to seeing every child reach their full potential and assure you we will do everything in our means to make that happen. We ask for your support and participation in this effort by sending your child to school every day, encouraging him/her to read on a regular basis, and to carefully monitor homework and progress. Research clearly shows the most signi icant factor in luencing student success is FAMILY. Working together gives us the greatest chance for a meaningful year! Each fall, staff and students at Morris Area Elementary embrace a new theme. We ‘Dared Mighty Things’ in 2012, reached ‘Higher’ in 2013, and were looking ‘Beyond You’ in 2014-2015. This year we embrace the concept of “WE > me.” Working together we will make this year memorable!

“Invest in Our Youth” M.A.E.S will continue the “Invest in our Youth” campaign for 2015-2016. This SINGLE* fundraising event replaces the time consuming practice of collecting fees or participating in other fundraisers as a way to pay for events/items such as a trip to the zoo, skiing, assignment books, the overnight class trip, music and PE supplies, or numerous other “extras” which enhance the educational experience for our students. This program – in which 100% of the funds directly bene it students – will remain the same as last year in that we ask each family to ‘sell’ one share ($33.00) for each child enrolled in K-6. While the ‘of icial’ kick-off for this event will occur in November, families or friends may contribute at any time by sending cash or check directly to the school or by going online: x Go to the Morris Area Schools web site: www.morris.k12.mn.us x Click on the “Donate to Morris Area Schools” link on the left side of the page. x Enter the “Donation Info” x Under “Apply donation to:” choose Universal x Complete information as needed (address, payment option, etc.) x In the “Additional Information/Comments” type: Invest in Our Youth x Click on, Submit [*Activities conducted outside the school day (Comm. Ed.) and elective classes such as band may still request payments. Also, please know that other organizations, not af iliated with the school, may still ask students to fundraise. In addition, you are still responsible for school lunch, milk, and snack break payments – should you choose to participate.]

NOTE FOR KINDERGARTENERS The irst full day for kindergarten students is Thursday, September 10. However, kindergarten students and parents are required to attend a meeting on September 8 or 9. Check your student letter mailed August 14, or contact us at 320-589-1250. READING CORPS CONTINUES Students in grades K-3 will continue to bene it from the MN Reading Corps program during the 2015-2016 school year. This is the seventh year of the program and it has been a tremendous boost for students. Reading Corps is a statewide initiative to have every child be a successful reader by the end of 3rd grade. ASSESSMENTS In addition to statewide assessments, students at Morris Area Elementary School (MAES) will take the FASTBridge reading luency test and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) three times a year. Both tests are given fall, winter, and spring. We expect the information gained from these tests will help us to: Analyze program effectiveness Predict pro iciency on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments Differentiate instruction to reach all learners Allocate resources where they are most needed

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE Morris Area Schools is making a signi icant investment in the use of technology for the 2015-2016 school year and beyond. This new initiative is called 1:WORLD (one to world) and will include several carts of I-pads and Chromebooks for use by ALL students K-12. This is the irst step of an anticipated roll out where we hope to provide all students in grades 5-12 with an individual computer—students in grades ive and nine will receive their device this year.

Morris Area High School A Message from the High School Principal, Bill Kehoe On behalf of our staff at Morris Area High School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year. I am looking forward to working with parents, students, and community members in the Morris Area School District. The entire staff has been busy getting ready to make this another successful school year. We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our students can achieve their highest potential. New Teachers In the high school we have four new teachers. Ms. Rebecca Fischer and Ms. Amy Mumm will be two new members of the English department. Both of them have many years of experience in teaching high school English. Ms. Mumm comes to us from Moorhead, MN and Ms. Fischer is coming to us from Wisconsin. Ms. Elizabeth Bartholet will be a new addition to the Music Department. She joins us from Missouri and will be teaching Junior High Band. Ms. Bartholet will also have music duties in the elementary. Ms. Chelsea Vilchis comes to MAHS from Cosmos, MN and will be teaching in the Agriculture Department. We are very excited to welcome these staff members to the Tiger family. Technology There has been a lot of hard work and planning this past summer to continue to improve technology in the district. Morris Area has begun to roll out a one-to-one initiative for our students. As part of the 1:World technology initiative, all ifth and ninth grade students will be issued a Chromebook computer for use at home and in the classroom during the 2015-2016 school year. This will be expanded each year until every student in grades ive through twelve will have a device. We also purchased mobile Chromebook labs for student use in the classroom.

Hang out with friends and get your homework done with help from University of Minnesota Morris tutors at the Study Lounge. The Study Lounge is open to all Morris Area students in grades 7—12. Study Lounge meets in the MACE Conference Room. For more information or to sign up, please contact Tammy Roth <troth@morris.k12.mn.us> or Morris Area Community Education. This program is sponsored by the University of Minnesota Morris, Morris Area Community Education, and Morris Area Schools.

Food Service This year students will have an opportunity for a second breakfast. There is a short break scheduled from 10:08 to 10:18 so students that were unable to get breakfast before school, were not hungry when breakfast was served, or they are in need of a snack to get them through to lunch have time get a healthy snack. I anticipate an exciting and successful year at Morris Area High School. Feel free to call me at 320-585-2200 or email me at bkehoe@morris.k12.mn.us with any questions. Bill Kehoe

2015-2016 SCHOOL LUNCH INFORMATION Keeping parents informed and involved helps to assure student safety and improve student success. With today’s on-the-go lifestyles, it has become more dif icult for schools to reach families quickly and effectively. This is why Morris Area School decided to implement Instant Alert for Schools. Instant Alert for Schools is an essential tool for noti ication and communication. Within minutes of an emergency, school of icials can use Instant Alert to deliver a single, clear message to the students’ parents or guardians by telephone, cell phone, e-mail, pager or PDA in any combination. The system can also be used to notify you of a school closing due to inclement weather. It’s an equally effective way to keep you informed of everyday activities, such as event times and locations as well as schedule changes. The system is Internet based and allows each family to maintain a secure, password protected online pro ile. You can log into your pro ile at any time to update your contact information. To do this, go to the school website www.morris.k12.mn.us and click on Instant Alert in the Quicklink section. If you are not a staff member in the school, click on ‘Parent’ in the New User box. If you are a staff member in the school, you will create a username and password in the ‘School Staff’ box. Maintaining the accuracy of your pro ile will increase the ability of the school to keep you informed. The system is ready for you at any time. We encourage all of you to take advantage of this opportunity, as we will be utilizing this system for most of our school-to-home communication. If you need assistance with your pro ile, please send an email to InstantAlertHelp@Honeywell.com. If you do not have access to a computer, please feel free to come to the school to use our facilities.

The cafeteria is a place where students can meet before and after school to visit and relax. We like to call this the commons area. Our lunch line has two main menu lines, a Fun & Fit line, and the ala carte line. Students will have the option of choosing to have the menued lines or the ala carte line and pay with lunch account funds. Parents will have to ill out the Student Charging Form to allow students to charge more than a breakfast or lunch. The sack lunch program is also available. Parents of students may order sack lunches for their children. Our breakfast programs starts serving at 7:45 a.m. daily and at 9:45 a.m. on two hour late days. We also offer a Second Chance Breakfast for students in grades 7—12 at 10:08 a.m. We will continue to use the inger scanner instead of pin numbers for student identi ication for meals. If parents or students choose to, they can also type in their lunch number. Parents will still be able to check their family accounts the same as last year by going to the school website. BREAKFAST

LUNCH

We do a “Bus Safety Program” the irst week of school that all students participate in. In the classroom and on the bus we discuss the rules for waiting at the bus stops, riding the bus and the dangers surrounding the bus. There are also bus safety reminders included with the bus route information. Bus route information will be mailed to families at the end of August. Rural routes are listed under the parent’s name, by bus number, and by driver’s name. The times of pickup may have to be adjusted the irst week of school. You will be noti ied of changes. Students on rural routes are picked up at the end of his/her driveway. Please notify the bus garage if your child won’t be riding the morning route. City stops are listed by street names and the students are picked up in groups. Pick the stop nearest to your home. Please bring your child to the bus stop before school starts so they are familiar with the stop location and how to get home from there. All students should be at their designated stop ive minutes before their designated times so the bus is not late for the rest of the stops on the route. The time that is listed on the route is the time the bus will leave the designated stop. ATTENTION MOTORISTS: Never drive by a school bus with red lashing lights and an extended stop arm whether meeting or following a school bus. The lashing yellow lights tell you the bus is preparing to stop. When the red lights are lashing and the stop arm is extended you must stop 20 feet from the bus in any direction. These signals show that children are getting on or off the school bus. Motorists must not move their vehicle until the driver shuts off the red lights and the stop arm. These laws exist to protect children getting on and off the bus and to protect you from a tragedy. Unfortunately every school year we have multiple school bus stop arm violations in Morris. Violation of these laws can result in a citation and ines. School bus drivers must report passing vehicles to the police department. Thank you for helping keep our children safe. Please call the Bus Garage with any questions or concerns, (320) 589-3932, Deann Recker.
