MORRIS LEADERS FROM YOUR MORRIS FIRE DEPARTMENT I am proud to be a firefighter. I revere that long line of expert firefighters who by their devotion to duty and sacrifice of self, have made it possible for me to be a member of a service honored and respected, in good times and bad, throughout the world. I never, by word or deed, will bring reproach upon the fair name of the fire service, nor permit others to do so unchallenged. I will cheerfully and willingly obey all lawful orders. I will always be on time to relieve, and shall endeavor to do more, rather than less, than my share. I will always be at my station, alert and attending to my duties. I shall, so far as I am able, bring to my seniors solutions, not problems. I shall live joyously, but always with due regard for the rights and privileges of others. I shall endeavor to be a model citizen in the community in which I live. I shall sell my life dearly to my enemy fire but give it freely to rescue those in peril. With God’s help, I shall endeavor to be one of His noblest Works.

Morris firefighters spread safety messages during Fire Prevention Week

OCCUPATION:

Department Lead at Superior Equipment

Dave Dybdal Morris Fire Chief October 2016 Morris - Fire departments across the country will be participating in Fire Prevention Week with safety messages and education on the dangers of fire. Fire Prevention Week goes from Oct. 9th to Oct. 15th this year. Fire Prevention Week is to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed 250 people and left 100,000 people homeless. The theme for the 2016 Fire Prevention Week is “ Don’t Wait-Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.” This highlights the fact that working smoke alarms saves lives. According to the Nation Fire Protection Association, roughly half of all residential fire deaths occur between 11 PM and 7 AM. By having working smoke

We salute the brave firefighters in our community and across the country for their tireless dedication to keeping us safe. Help protect our loyal firefighters and your family by learning more about fire prevention during Fire Prevention Week.

alarms placed properly in your home, you can cut the chances of dying in a house fire in half. Fire prevention is everyone’s responsibility and the Morris Fire Department is dedicated to providing presentations and demonstrations to educational facilities and community groups, we strive to increase the level of awareness of fire safety throughout the City & County. This year has been very busy for the Morris Fire Department, overall call volume has risen and Incidents continue to get more complex each year. Even as new technologies are developed, and people find new ways to create emergency situations, firefighters and other responders are expected to turn chaos into order. Although we can’t know exactly where or when the next event will occur, many incidents are quite predictable, meaning we

can and will prepare for them. I am proud to say that we have conducted Classes and Hands-OnTraining with a wide variety of groups from around Stevens County & the State this past year and the training we went through together better prepared us to handle an emergency. I don’t claim to have magic powers to see into the future, but I do think a lot about where we are in the fire service today and where we might go. The Morris fire department takes a lead role in Fire Prevention Week, October 9th-15th, 2016 by hosting activities and events that will entertain and educate our area public specifically, our children. Fire Prevention Coordinator Jeremiah Day has been working hard organizing all the activity’s we have planned for the week. The goal is to raise awareness of key FIRE PREVENTION continued on PAGE 5C

as follows. Minnesota fire departments have been reporting data online since 2009. Statewide, 99 percent of Minnesota fire departments provided numbers for this report, illustrating their commitment to fire prevention and making Minnesota a national leader in fire data collection. Here are a few important notes from Fires in Minnesota 2015: •There were 57 fire deaths last year — the highest number of fatalities since 2002. •Careless smoking was once again the leading cause of fatal fires. •Cooking was the most common cause of structure fires.

FIRE PREVENTION fire-safety issues and help residents prevent fires and fire injuries, especially at home. “Many people don’t realize that they are at greater danger from fire at home than anywhere else,” “Fortunately, there are many things residents can do to make their homes safer. Fire Prevention Week is the time when we reach out to the community, teaching people of every age how to prevent fires. This year, we’ll be focusing in particular on Careless Smoking & Cooking Fires, a serious and growing part of the fire problem.” 2015 Fires in Minnesota reported from the State Fire Marshal Office

•74 percent of fire deaths and 88 percent of injuries occurred in residential settings Fire dollar loss in Minnesota in 2015: •$612,586 / Day •$25,524 / Hour •$425 / Minute The Morris Fire Department strives to educate the community in fire & life safety. The importance of working smoke alarms, staying in the kitchen and paying attention while people are cooking, and using extreme caution with space heater use is very important. Also the proper disposal of cigarette butts could mean the difference between life and death.

Every smoke alarm has an expiration date: What’s yours? Does your home have a smoke alarm? According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the answer is likely yes: NFPA research shows that most American homes have at least one. But do you know how old your smoke alarms are? If you’re like most people, you’re probably not so sure. A recent survey conducted by NFPA revealed that only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced. That lack of awareness is a concern for NFPA, along with fire departments throughout the country, because smoke alarms don’t last forever.

NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code®, requires smoke alarms be replaced at least every 10 years, but because the public is generally unaware of this requirement, many homes have smoke alarms past their expiration date, putting people at increased risk. As the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years, NFPA is promoting this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” to better educate the public about the critical importance of knowing how old their smoke alarms are and replacing them once they’re 10 years old.

To find out how old your smoke alarm is and its expiration date, simply look on the back of the alarm where the date of manufacture is marked. The smoke alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase). Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and batteries should be replaced once a year or when they begin to chirp, signaling that they’re running low. For more information on smoke alarms and this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait: Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years”, visit www.firepreventionweek.org.

These businesses encourage you to “Check the Date” on your smoke alarms. Don’s Cafe
