An open home with open spaces Eric and Liz Meichsner grew up in the Morris area and wanted to return to the area once Liz finished her medical training. They’ve been planning their dream house ever since they knew they’d be able to come home.

Story and photos by Kim Ukura

“We always had a dream of building a house – I love architecture and design so for me it was a fun thing, a hobby,” said Liz. “Building was always in the plans, if we could do it.” They started looking at designs and floor plans with an architect in the Twin Cities about two years before they planned to break ground in Morris, and purchased their one-acre lot by

Pomme de Terre Golf Course in April of 2014. They wanted to be out of town, but also close to Morris, since Liz can be called into Stevens Community Medical Center unexpectedly at any time of the day or night. They broke ground on the house in July of 2014, four months before Liz completed her medical residency in the Twin Cities.

Liz said her biggest priority in designing the walk-out rambler was to have an open layout for the kitchen, living room and dining room. The Meichsners also wanted the bedrooms to be separate from the living area, but near to each other in a separate bedroom wing. And the main floor needed to be handicap accessible. “We looked online and found a bunch of different plans that we liked and pieced a few of them together,” said Liz. “We started with a blank sheet of paper and the plans and then drew it out,” added Eric. Because they wanted to put three bedrooms on the main floor, they needed to make some compromises. Eric’s office, for example, was moved to the basement to keep the footprint from growing too large. The main floor has tall ceilings, with a special coffered ceiling in the “living room” area and a stone fireplace that also reaches to the ceiling. The fireplace is flanked by custom wooden shelves designed by Collins Cabinets of Nelson, Minn. For the early months of the project, they relied on their parents to make sure the project was on track. They also spoke to their

general contractor, David Heil, daily to get updates and make decisions. “We really tried to be proactive because we were building from afar, in terms of having people lined up and knowing what we wanted,” said Liz. “We had to be a little more on the ball with that – we made 90 percent of our decisions before we broke ground.”

The kitchen also includes a walk-in pantry with extra counter space and open cabinetry so it’s easy to pull ingredients off the shelves. The family’s small appliances and deep freezer are also stored in this area off of the kitchen. “It was designed to be a welcoming, family-friendly space that we could gather with family and friends – so far it’s worked out well,” said Liz. A week after moving in, Eric and Liz hosted family for Easter.

“Our tile guy did a great job – we gave him an idea and he ran with it,” said Eric. Like other areas in the house, Liz added some special features to the bathroom, including a drawer with electric plugs to store tools like a hair dryer. Down the hallway, the kids’ bathroom has a

tub and shower, along with more custom tile work. Greyson’s room and the spare room are near the other end of the hallway. The bedroom wing is carpeted and, like the rest of the main floor, is painted in shades of gray. Both of the children’s rooms have soundproofing in the walls to help during nap time.

The entry from the garage comes into the mudroom, which is flanked by a walk-in closet and the laundry room. The closet as motion-activated lights, which Liz said is nice when you walk in the door. The mudroom has a large bench with built in storage, designed to be a place where their son, Greyson, can take his shoes on and off and be responsible for storing his own hats and gloves. “Greyson just pops right up there, he loves it,” said Liz. The laundry room has plenty of cabinet space, including one that holds specially designed drawers that can hold laundry baskets – one of the many details Liz added throughout the house. There is a half bathroom near the mudroom that is also handicap accessible. The entire main floor, except for each of the three bedrooms, has dark maple hardwood floors. The bedroom wing, which includes the master bedroom, Greyson’s room, a future kid’s room, and a children’s bathroom, is just off the living room. The master bedroom includes a master bathroom suite with a custom-tiled shower, two mirrors and sinks, and a walk-in closet.

The basement is, for now, largely unfinished – the walls are painted and the carpets are in, but the rest is on hold while they finish furnishing the main floor. The main room, which takes up nearly the entire floor, will eventually have a small kitchen, fireplace, television and other living room furniture. Other rooms downstairs include a toy room, a fourth bedroom, another bathroom and Eric’s office, which looks out the back of the house towards the golf course. All of the floors in the basement are heated, which keeps the space cozy. “We think it’ll be able to heat almost the whole house – it did for

awhile this winter,” said Eric. One person who isn’t concerned about the basement is Greyson. He loves to spread out with his toys and run around in the open space when he’s home for the day. For the most part, construction on the house went smoothly. The project hit a delay in November, when an early snowstorm hit before the roof was installed and the house was enclosed. Despite the month-long delay, the Meichsners were able to move into their home in May. “The house is still a work in progress. We have quite a bit to do, but we’re enjoying it so far,” said Liz.

Adventures in house flipping Regular viewers of HGTV know that flipping houses can be a challenging but rewarding activity. The Zierke family of Morris decided to try their hand at home improvement with a fixer-upper property on Morris’ east side. Story by Kim Ukura, photos by Brooke Kern

“In the fall of 2013 we were looking for a little family project that would incorporate the skills and abilities of our daughter Christine, her husband Javier, my husband Bruce and me,” said Mary Pat. “We decided to buy an old rundown house in a good neighborhood and ‘flip’ it.” Every member of the family had a role to play in the project. Christine worked on marketing, Javier was the carpenter, Bruce served as project manager and Mary Pat took the lead on shopping, decorating and design. “It was a lot of fun to see and to help and to work through

problems, play around, ask people for opinions – it was a lot of fun,” said Christine. “All of us have full time jobs so all work was accomplished in our spare time,” said Mary Pat. “On weekends Christine would deliver picnic lunches to the house which we all enjoyed while sitting on upside-down buckets with the cooler acting as our table.” When looking for a house to flip, Christine said they were looking for “good bones.” In this case, they saw a lot of potential for improvements in a 1951 home at 302 East Second Street in Morris.

The Zierke family purchased the home in December 2013 and spent the next 10 months on the project. The result is an almost entirely new home with a modern, open-concept layout, updated utilities and a facelift on the exterior. The most dramatic change in the house took place on the main floor. The original floorplan had a galley kitchen, separated from both the living room and a small bedroom/dining room that also functioned as a walk-through room to get out to the porch in the backyard. “We had a lot of different ideas about how to open this space and make it more contemporary and livable,” said Christine. The first major project was to tear down the walls in the main living area and install a beam along the length of the house for support. This allowed them to open the kitchen up into the dining room and living room. “The reason Mom wanted to open up the kitchen is because when we’re at their house, when they are at our house, where does everybody congregate? In the kitchen.” Christine said.

Mary Pat worked with the staff at Morris Lumber to design a custom kitchen that includes new stainless steel appliances. The kitchen also has a custom tiled backsplash and new lighting fixtures throughout. To keep the room open, the kitchen island opens directly over the stairs to the basement where the master bedroom suite is located. There are two bedrooms on the main floor of the house, as well as a full size bathroom. The bedrooms had mostly cosmetic changes – new windows, updated paint and trim, renovated closets and new carpeting – while the bathroom was a bigger project. To make more space in the old small bathroom, they pushed out a wall and removed an existing linen closet in the hallway. This made space to replace a corner shower with an abbreviated bathtub and linen closet in the bathroom. Javier also did all of the custom tiling on the floor and walls in the space. Javier spent many hours on stilts removing the popcorn finish on both floor ceilings, replacing it with a more modern textured ceiling throughout the space. When they came across a project they didn’t know how to complete, they visited with local experts and consulted “how to videos on YouTube. Like most renovation projects, new issues arose when the walls started to come down. Javier soon discovered that there were issues with the wiring, concerns with the plumbing, and questions about the ventilation systems.

The basement also changed dramatically during the renovation process. “When we bought this house, we knew it was a dry basement but the basement wasn’t finished,” Javier said. “We decided it would be nice to finish it – there was a lot of empty space.” The Zierkes decided to turn the basement into a master bedroom suite with a full bathroom and walk-in closet. The basement bedroom is the largest in the house, and is well-sealed with foam insulation, Javier said. While they tried to do most of the work themselves, the Zierkes ended up hiring contractors to help with the wiring (Kieffer Electric of Morris), plumbing (Needham Plumbing of Graceville), laying carpeting (Cullen’s) and ventilation (McGinnis Appliance). These structural changes ended up being more expensive than anticipated, but “we thought, ‘If we’re going to do something, we’re going to do it right,” Javier said.

Building a home with a view

Story by Katie Erdman, photos by Brooke Kern

One of the first things you notice when you walk through the doors of Rod and Trudy Schlieman’s home near Holloway is the view. The landscape is featured using an open floor plan and large windows that overlook the Pomme de Terre River. When the Schliemans decided to build their home, they had a site in mind but really didn’t realize how they could optimize this incredible view and make it such a big part of their home. That was before they met with Jonathan Joos of KJH Builders. Joos immediately knew what needed to be done in the new construction to emphasize the natural beauty around them, both inside and outside the home. The Schliemans live on a farm north of Holloway. They had remodeled their farm home over the years but soon the mold and radon issues in the basement became a bigger problem

than expected. At this point, the Schliemans had a choice: raise the house and put in a new basement or build a new home. They decided to build on a hill to the west of the old farm house which was later moved and reused for a family in Appleton. Rod and Trudy met with KJH Builders about the construction. They had a picture of the style of home they liked and Joos drew up the floor plan. He also added in some ideas that they liked, including making the floor plan more open in order to optimize the view.

To optimize the open space, KJH Builders suggested the living room area have a half wall with pillars and beams. They then added the large three-pane windows facing west. The kitchen area, off the living room, was also open and afforded the view. Between the two rooms, are large doors opening out to a two level, maintenance free, patio. The top floor features seating area and the bottom floor has stone pathways and circular seating around a firepit. This is a favorite gathering place during the summer at the Schlieman home.

The Schlieman’s chose wood made of knotty alder and stained dark hickory. The pillars, woodwork and cabinets all have the same design to draw them together. Joos also suggested a natural stonework fireplace which was built by Jamie Thorstad and a mantel that matches the beams, cabinets and pillars in the living room. Construction can be a stressful time and for the Schliemans this was even more so because they were also planning their daughter’s wedding in the midst of it. The construction started in July of 2013 and they moved into the home in February of 2014. Their daughter was married in July of 2014.

The kitchen cabinets, made in a similar style as the pillars, were built by Cabinets by Carter out of Alexandria (right). The center island was designed to match and blend together the woodwork in the house. A unique aspect in the kitchen electrical work is that the outlets are under the top cabinets and hidden from view. Jonathan Joos did the tile work in the kitchen and the flooring was done in dark hickory. The Schliemans love all the distressed woodwork and flooring in the home. Also on the main floor is an office, master bedroom, master bath, laundry room and mudroom. In the office (bottom right), floating shelves are a unique part and the mud room features lots of storage.

The master bedroom also affords a view to the west. In the master bath, Joos applied some of his unique touches with a center tub and walk-in shower that does not need doors or curtains. The counter in the bathroom has a granite top with a leather feel. In the extra bathroom on the main level, Joos arranged the wall tile to look like a waterfall. The Schliemans absolutely love this, along with all the other special touches he suggested and added to the home. One of these is the pergola at the front entrance. The lower floor of the home contains three bedrooms (one for each of their children when they visit), a family room, bathroom, workout room and storage areas. The family room also has a fireplace and large windows overlooking the patio. The mantle for this fireplace is an old beam from a building that has a huge crack in it. When they saw it at Alex Brick and Fireplace, they felt it would add character. The wood piece also came with the ironwork which adds extra character to the piece. Trudy explained that the idea of the circular seating patio was a suggestion made one day when Rod was working in the field and she immediately jumped at the idea. After breaking the news to her husband and explaining how the unique design would enhance the patio, he was quick to approve the change. To enhance this even more, there is a waterfall coming out of the landscaping stone in the patio. A small bar area was added with a walkout to the patio. The landscaping work around the home was done by Stacy’s Nursery including the patio area.

The Schliemans cannot say enough good about the contractors they trusted with their home. Trudy said that they were very kind people and once they got to know her, simply knew what she would like in her home. Rod and Trudy are very pleased with their new home and all the unique aspects both inside and out. Even though Trudy jokes that Rod still sleeps with his checkbook under the pillow, the couple is thoroughly enjoying all parts of the home and especially the late afternoon sunsets that can be seen from nearly every major room in the house.
