Early Childhood Screening Parents of 3 to 4 year old children Has Your Child Been Screened? Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how children are developing between the ages of 3 to 4 years. It identi ies, at an early stage, possible learning or health concerns so that children can get the help they need before starting school. Early Childhood Screening is not an IQ test or a Kindergarten entrance exam. Morris Area Pre-Kindergarten classes require that screening be done within 90 days of program entry and it is required by state law for children before they can begin in Kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening only needs to be completed once. Screening is a free review of your child’s vision, hearing, height, weight, overall development, and immunization records. For the Morris Area Schools, children are screened at Horizon Public Health by a nurse. Watch for an information packet in the mail shortly after your child turns three-and-a-half years of age. If you do not receive a packet, call the Public Health of ice at 320208-6672 to set up the day and time for your child’s screening. For more information contact Diane Strobel at 320-585-2237 or dstrobel@morris.k12.mn.us or Horizon Public Health at 320-208-6672.

Are Your Children on the School Census? You matter to us! The school census is a list of students from birth to school age. It is used to inform parents about opportunities that their child needs to be ready to enter school when they turn ive years of age. Noti ications for events and programs such as early childhood screening, pre-kindergarten opportunities, special events, family nights, kindergarten registration, etc. will be mailed to families based on the census data. Who should Check Their Child’s Status? If you have just had a new baby, recently moved into the school district, have recently changed your address, or want to make sure your children are on the birth to 5 census, please contact Diane Strobel by calling 320-5852237 or e-mail her at dstrobel@morris.k12.mn.us with updates to assure you receive the necessary information!

From the Desk of Rick Lahn A Message from the Superintendent It is hard to believe that another school year is nearing the end. After spending my irst year as Superintendent of the Morris Area Schools, I have come to know irsthand why our school district is truly exceptional! Our outstanding student body demonstrates leadership, work ethic and a commitment to excellence both in the classroom and through ine arts and extra-curricular activities. Each day, they give us new reasons to be proud through their many accomplishments. As educators, we know that this does not happen without supportive parents who provide the necessary guidance and nurturing to help their children succeed. In addition, we are very proud of our outstanding teaching and support staff who are dedicated to help every child reach their full potential in our classrooms. It is as a direct result of their efforts that we continue to be “The Finest School District in West Central Minnesota. As you are aware, one of our focus areas this year has been our “One to World technology initiative. Through the efforts of many, we have achieved great results. This past fall we added additional IPad carts and Chromebooks throughout the school. In addition, all students in grades ive and nine were issued their own personal laptop device that they will be able to use the next four years. We are excited to issue brand new laptop devices to next year’s students in grades ive and nine. This infusion of technology coupled with outstanding staff development has transformed the educational environment in our schools. Teachers and students continue to use technology in ways that enhance the educational experience in the classroom. We look forward to continued growth in this area with the start of the new school year. Over the summer we will be busy working on projects to enhance our facilities and programs. Most notably will be the addition of a building wide security system that will enhance safety for students and staff, while maintaining the friendly and welcoming environment that makes us unique. The implementation of the new security system will take place with the opening of school next fall. In addition, The High School parking lot that has served the district for nearly ifty years will be replaced, along with worn sections of sidewalk. Two new sidewalks will be installed along entrance drives to the High School and Elementary school parking lots making access safer and easier for student walkers and bikers. In closing I would like to congratulate our eighty graduating seniors as they pursue the next chapter of their lives. Always remember that you are a “Tiger and welcome back to visit us at school any time. Have a relaxing and enjoyable summer!

Be watching for the 2016—2017 School District Calendar in July!

Morris Area High School Highlights A Message from Bill Kehoe, Principal The days keep lying by as we have entered the spring of the year and the last quarter of the school year. Spring activities are in full swing and the last quarter of the school year is underway. We will continue to work hard to provide the best possible education for our students and to make the most of the days we have left, as summer will be here before we know it.

students will also be administered a science test. In the high school, tenth grade students will take a reading and science test and eleventh grade students take a test in mathematics.

TECHNOLOGY Throughout the 2015-2016 school year we have focused on our one to world technology initiative. Our staff has done an amazing job of working hard to learn how to use these devices and how to incorporate them into their lessons. I have seen great lessons that teachers have developed that have engaged students in learning activities with the use of technology. Currently our 5th and 9th grade students were issued devices and we will continue to provide devices for 5 th and 9th grade students for the next three years until all students in grades 5th through 9th will have a device to use.

These statewide tests are summative measurements of student achievement that are used to evaluate student learning, skill, and assess achievement of the Minnesota Academic Standards. Our English language learners are also tested on their language pro iciency development. Our staff works very hard throughout the school year delivering these standards to our students and giving them the skills necessary to be successful on these assessments and the skills necessary to be successful in life after high school. These tests will began on April 11 and will continue through May 11. Please visit the high school or elementary website for a complete testing schedule. On April 19, our eleventh grade students will also have the opportunity to take the ACT test during the school day free of charge.

TESTING With the spring of the year, comes required annual state assessments for our students. Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA’s) are given to students across the state. Elementary and junior high students in grades third through eighth will take tests in reading and mathematics. Fifth and eighth grade
