Tiger Track and Field Let’s move those feet! Come run off some energy this summer in the Tiger Track and Field program. While here, you will become a better and faster runner while learning about warm up techniques, field event mechanics, and other fun activities involving running. Emphasis will be on participation, involvement, and development of physical fitness. The end of the program will conclude with a Skills Showcase where all Tiger runners will run, jump, and throw for family and friends to watch in a meet-like format. Although the Hershey’s Track and Field program is no longer operating at a national level, Minnesota and MACE believe that it is not only important to continue a youth track and field program, but to improve on it. The Twin Cities Marathon has agreed to sponsor a youth track and field state meet this summer (more info to come). We are excited about this partnership and the opportunity to offer our very own track and field program that we know you’ll enjoy. 13 Sessions—$39.00—COURSE NO. 1604 Mondays and Wednesdays, May 11—June 3 3:15—4:30 p.m. MAES Gym No practice May 25 June 8—24 3:15—4:30 p.m. UMM Track

We are at that busy time of the year when one school year is wrapping up, while at the same time, we also gear up for the next school year! Pretty exciting! The Morris Area School District has much to be proud of! This school year has had so many great moments and events to make us all proud! The list is too long to mention everything in this space, but if you think about all the components of school, each of them includes excellent accomplishments. From academic programs gaining momentum with great student results, to our strong extra-curricular programs that had wonderful successes and recognitions; all make the Morris Area School District one in which our community can take great pride. This summer will bring projects to enhance the facilities. You should start to see work on the high school before the school year ends. We are upgrading the HVAC system as well as making some improvements to the energy systems. All should be completed by the end of August, just in time for our students to return!

One of our most exciting projects will be rolled out next fall. We have spent a great deal of time researching how to best integrate technology into our learning process so that it can become more personalized. The committee, made up of primarily teachers, has created a plan that adds iPad carts, and Chromebooks throughout the school. Two grade levels will be 1:1 with Chromebooks‌...Grades 5 and 9. The plan is to keep adding grade levels each year. Thanks for the Education Foundation for sponsoring the two grade levels for this upcoming school year!! We are also improving the infrastructure to make sure all areas of the facility are able to access wireless. Another change for the coming school year is that the new Superintendent, Rick Lahn, will take over as of July 1st. Rick is excited to become a part of this fine district! Our student body is truly the backbone of our school system. When I first arrived in Morris, they were what impressed me the most. You have much to be proud of as a

community when you think of these young people. Not only do they work hard and do well with their schoolwork, they also demonstrate great leadership skills. Many have pursued projects of service for the school and community. Amazing things have been accomplished with their talents. They will continue to be a great source of pride for everyone. Please allow me this opportunity to thank the Morris Area School District and community for allowing me to serve as your Superintendent for this past year. It has been an incredibly rich and highly rewarding experience for me. I felt welcomed from the start, and am actually sad to be leaving. The year will be memorable for me indeed due to the kindness of the people in this great community. You have taught me a great deal about the value of smaller communities. Thank you so much, and I look forward to our paths possibly crossing again.

One of my very favorite quotes comes from a book written by former Hall of Fame Tennessee Women’s Basketball Coach Pat Summitt who shares a common refrain heard from her father; “You’ll be finished when it’s done. And it’s not done till it’s done right.” This focus on high standards is something that drives me. I truly enjoy this pursuit of excellence – of everyone being on the same team pushing and supporting each other to use all of our gifts. While there is no single measure-ment tool to determine the multiple tasks a school undertakes, we can point to several indicators which show our good work. Morris Area Elementary: • consistently ranks as a top performing school academically by the Minnesota Department of Education (Reward and Celebration status) • has a strong school environment focused on every child being valued and feeling safe • has a rigorous curriculum with daily opportunities for physical education and music • provides targeted interventions for students needing additional help and for those reaching higher • plans for a MAJOR increase in technology resources (coming the fall of 2015) to further personalize the educational process • provides top notch facilities

Incoming Kindergarten Students—Approximately August 14 the Elementary School office will mail out your teacher assignments. Our kindergarten teachers are very excited about the upcoming year. The District Wide Open House is scheduled for August 27 and will give your child an opportunity to get acquainted with the room, see their teacher and other students from the class. It is also an opportunity to meet other parents. The first full school day for kindergarten students will be Thursday, September 10. All other students (grades 1-12) will start school on Tuesday, September 8. As the parent of a kindergarten student you and your child will be required to visit the school on either September 8th or 9th. We will send you a scheduled time for this meeting around August 14. During the meeting (which will last about 90 minutes): • Your child will have a 15 minute assessment with his/her teacher • Parents will visit with the classroom teacher and complete appropriate forms • Your child will participate in various screenings (Speech, Vision/Hearing, IGDI’s, Finger Scan) Students in grades 1-6 will have their teacher assignments mailed out approximately August 14. Teacher assignments will not be given out prior to you receiving the school notification letter. New Student Orientation—Are you new to the community and have school age children? Please contact the elementary office 320-589-1250 to request registration materials or visit the school web site [click on Elementary Home and then choose the Back to School / New Students link]. Early notification assists us with planning and securing appropriate materials. New student orientation (grades K-6) is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 27. A special student orientation for Spanish speaking families will start at 4:00 p.m. on August 27. Open House In The Fall—The Morris Area School District will hold a district wide open house on Thursday, August 27, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Your family will locate your child’s classroom and locker, meet the teacher, drop off supplies, meet students and parents, take care of lunch and milk money, etc. This evening will help kids get organized and feel more comfortable for the start of the school year. I would encourage everyone to participate as this is for the student and parent. We are excited about the open house, as our teachers are not available during the day on August 24-26. They are participating in training, meetings, room and curriculum preparation. Please join us on the evening of August 27!
