By Brooke Kern Stevens County Times The season ended with frustration at the free throw line last year and this year, the Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta Tiger boys basketball team wants to change that ending. Last year, the Tigers appeared to have a clear path to the Section 3AA-North championship game until a tough Section 3AA-North semifinal loss, in overtime, to rival Minnewaska sent MACA packing. The Tigers went 9-for-26 from the free throw line in the game, and the Lakers ended up advancing to the Class AA State Tournament.
“We look to compete for the conference and section titles this season,” MACA head coach Mark Torgerson said of the 2018-2019 team goals. “We again have a very tough schedule that should test us early and often. We lost most of our guards to graduation, so if we can find some depth there, we should be a quality team.” The Tigers return several key players from last years team, including starters Jaret Johnson, Jackson Loge and Camden Arndt, who is ranked as one of the top 50 best players in Minnesota according to Prep Hoops.

Owl boys look to repeat success from last year By Brooke Kern Stevens County Times The Hancock Owl boys basketball team comes off a perfect 12-0 Pheasant Conference championship season where the Owls went 25-3 overall, won the Section 6A-South title and took runner-up in Section 6A. Can they repeat their success this season? That’s the goal. “We want to compete for the conference, subsection and section titles again this year,” Hancock head coach Cory Bedel said. The Owls will have to do it without guard Noah Kannegiesser, who tallied more than 1,000 points last season for Hancock. Kannegiesser graduated last spring and is currently on the roster for NCAA Division II Concordia St. Paul. Despite graduating their most prolific scorer, the Owls do return four starters to the court. Bennett Nienhaus is the top returning scorer for the Owls, averaging 14 points per game. He scored nearly 400 points last season and returns as a senior.
