The Sketchbook Book
FOREWORDS I often start a sketchbook thinking I am going to start drawing again, only this time I will do it for real, draw everything around me, the people, the scenery, and the city. But, I rarely do so. My sketchbooks end up being places for little notes, half written songs, doodles, phone numbers, appointments, occasional sketching, and just a kind of storyboard of what goes on in my mind.
After some time I start to get annoyed with
the content of the books and I put them in a drawer, or on a shelf, not to be opened again. Then I forget about them and one fine day I go get a new one; and guess what happens then? Right indeed, back where we started‌ I recently moved and happened to find a lot of these forgotten sketchbooks. I was flicking through them and realized that they contained little memories related to the content. Not that I had actually documented my life, but I started to remember the situations where I did the doodles, the notes, wrote down an appointment, or a half finished song.
I then decided to collect some of the things
in the sketchbooks, the schoolwork sketches, the to-dos, the doodles, and the reminders, visual or literal, and put them into a little “project book as a reminder to myself why I purchased the never finished sketchbooks, and why it is fun to look back at them.
I only once finished a sketchbook, it was a
book of doodles, and I only finished it because the point of it was to finish it. I succeeded that one time. I did not succeed the time I decided to fill an entire book with buildings. I will probably never fill a sketchbook again, but at least I realized that it is not the purpose of my books. - M. Beta
