“What I’m about to tell you may seem a little London-centric, but don’t turn away because, if you live in a city or a large town anywhere in the country, this is going to impact on you too, maybe not immediately, but soon – far too soon. “As we all know, motorcycles and scooters are the perfect way to get around London’s congested, complex streets, and it’s estimated that 55,000 people ride into the capital, and that there are 130,000 registered twowheeled vehicles in the city every day. For some people, it’s a lifestyle choice, while for others it’s the only affordable and practical way of getting around on journeys that don’t work on public transport or are too far to pedal on a bicycle. “But this freedom of travel, and freedom of choice, is genuinely under threat, and may become a thing of the past even sooner than we’d expected. Sounds a bit dramatic? Well, it’s not, and these issues won’t go away on their own – we need to help ourselves, now. “Unbelievably, more than 50 motorcycles are stolen in London every day. Think about it. Do the maths. Out of 130,000 registered bikes we can expect that around 20,000 of them will get stolen this year. So why is this happening, and why does it gravely affect every single one of us? “It’s happening for two reasons. Firstly, our overstretched police and court system don’t see motorcycle theft as a priority. Along with the public, this kind of theft is seen as a victimless crime. Why? Because we’re all insured, right? So the insurance company will take care of it. “Err, no, that’s not how it works – who do you think pays for all this? The insurance underwriters do… for now. Insuring motorcycles and scooters in London is now a loss-making business, and many underwriters are completely pulling out of the London motorcycle insurance market. Premiums are rising dramatically and, more and more, people are being refused insurance altogether. Riders are having to register their bikes at their parents’ home address, or downsize their bikes, or even give up altogether.

violence. Because many of us do try to secure our bikes properly, thieves have turned from theft to violent robbery – their solution to added security is to hijack bikes on the streets. And they do this mobhanded, in groups of four or more, with extreme violence, using machetes, and now acid, inflicting life-threatening and life-changing injuries to their victims. The bikes they steal are then used for more street crime; snatching mobile phones, handbags and necklaces from easy targets, again, knowing that the police are unlikely to give chase. And because many of these thugs are young teens, even if they are caught they’re unlikely to receive a custodial sentence – just a fine… that they can pay by stealing more bikes or phones etc. Not only that, but it’s become a rite of passage for young would-be criminals – baiting the police and getting away is seen as cool, as to whether you have the right stuff to be with the gangs. Our politically correct, public-safety-driven policing policies are actually breeding young criminals and gang members by providing an exciting, safe, punishmentfree crime to cut their teeth on. This is bonkers. Society needs a wake-up call. Handing our streets over to thugs is too high a price to pay against the modest risk to public safety caused by a police chase. In other countries, fleeing criminals are legally fully liable for the consequences of their attempts to evade arrest. It should be the same here. “If this continues, riding a motorcycle in London will soon become a luxury commodity, only affordable to the very affluent or very dedicated few. No, I’m not exaggerating, I’m really not. And even if you don’t live in London, guess what’s coming to a town near you, any day now? “So, what’s the solution? We must demand that the police initiate a Zero Tolerance approach to motorcycle and scooter-related theft, robbery and street crime by giving a clear mandate to the police to wipe out this epidemic, supported by legal protection when they discharge their duties to pursue criminals, and ensure that tough sentences are handed out when these thugs are caught. The media and public also need to support the police in doing their duty, and frankly, stop whining.

“The second reason is that it’s an unpunished crime, and the criminals who steal bikes know that, unless they’re “What can we do? We can YOU do? You can lobby, you can very unlucky, there are pretty much no consequences for speak out, and you can protest. Go to www.weridelondon. their actions. As you’ll’ve seen on the TV news recently, com and see how you can get involved. Write to your MP, they feel completely at liberty to steal bikes in broad bother your mates, but most of all, do not do nothing. If over daylight, safe in the knowledge that the public are too a thousand London bike riders can be bothered to dress up afraid or too indifferent to intervene and the police are in tweed and raise money for the Distinguished Gentleman’s too busy to bother them. They also know that if the Ride on a classic or retro bike, then I’d expect thousands more police are called, they won’t chase them. As I can tell you to turn up and protest to help preserve our way of life, and our from face-to-face conversations with frustrated officers, right to ride. It works – how do you think the cycle community, they know that if a criminal, or member of the public, just 50,000 cyclists a day compared with our 130,000 is injured in a police chase, they, the police, will be held motorcyclists, persuaded Transport for London to allocate them personally liable under the law. The public, the press, a budget of almost one billion pounds of taxpayers’ money to the authorities, the IPCC and their own bosses won’t keep them safe? Clue? It wasn’t by asking nicely. back them up, and they’re not protected by the law, “Don’t be a wuss, don’t make excuses, and don’t leave it up so before they choose to chase a teenage scooterto someone else to sort. If you value your freedom to ride in mounted bike thief, they have to decide whether or London, and in towns and other cities too, get off your leathernot it’s worth their job and their pension. clad backside and help us preserve this hard-earned right. “Now, if this isn’t bad enough on its own, it’s creating a crime wave and a street culture of thuggery and “Rant over. Time for action.”

BEST ENGINEERING

BSH CHAMPS WINNERS

Well, the votes are all in, and they’ve been counted, and the winners of the 2017 BSH Custom Bike Building Champs have been decided. If you went to this year’s Motorcycle Live at the NEC last month, you’ll’ve seen them on the BSH Custom Xtreme stand, but for those of you who didn’t here’s a quick preview of the winning bikes before we feature them properly soon.

Grub from Blackmarket Customs is an old hand at custom bike building and he built this tall, skinny wheel Sportster to be both a show bike and a rider. Never seen a chopper smoke up its back tyre? You’ve never seen Grub on his then!

BEST NEW SKOOL CUSTOM

Aled Corps is another who builds at home, and this gloriously understated Norton ES2 is another fine example of the custom builder’s art. It won far more votes in its category than any other bike, and looking at it you can easily see why!

BEST CHOPPER:

Owned by Tommy Docherty, and built for him by Destiny Cycles’ Vic Jefford – one of, if not the premier custom bike builder in the land – it’s based around a Suzuki Intruder engine, and features more handmade, one-off parts than there’s room to list here!

BEST CUSTOM

BEST PAINT

James Rogers built this stunning Triumph custom by hand at home in his garage-cum-workshop. To get this level of minimalism and cleanliness takes so much time, hiding everything away so that it can’t be seen to give a bare, spartan appearance.

Nick Hailes’ Night Rod Special was painted by East Coast Airbrush, and is even more in-yer-face in the metal!

WIN A SPORTSTER!

In 2018, West London Harley Riders are celebrating their 35th anniversary, and they’ve decided to do something a bit different. The photo shows club members at Reading H-D, picking up the 2016 883 Sportster Iron which they’ve bought to use as a raffle prize. It has 1,800 miles on the clock and comes with one year’s warranty. They’ll be raffling it off at their annual Burning Budgie Rally, which is held over the weekend of 27-29th July, and the winning ticket’ll be drawn on the afternoon of Saturday, 28th July. All profits will be split 50/50, with half going to the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) and half going to the Headway Association, North West London. Tickets are £5 each and can be bought from club members – get more info from their website at www.westlondonharleyriders. co.uk and Facebook page.

NEW ROYAL ENFIELD 650 TWIN Royal Enfield have just released pics and info on their latest range of models powered by a new 650cc twin-cylinder. It’s a double overhead cam, four-valve engine that stays with air-cooling (no hidden oil coolers or radiators here!), but it still passes the Euro 4 emissions regs. It has a 270-degree crank, and a balance shaft to keep any primary vibes to a minimum, and while it may not be making massive horsepower (47bhp and 38ft-lb torque), the power delivery has the same low down punch of their

existing 500cc Bullet, albeit a bit less ‘thump’ and a bit more ‘rumble’. The official launch in Italy displayed two new models; the Interceptor and the Continental GT – a high-barred desert racer, and a cafe racer. Both bikes will be on sale very soon, and the answer to the question on everybody’s lips is that the expected price is set to be at around six grand. Get more info on the new bikes from your local Royal Enfield dealer or www. royalenfield.com/uk

The guest of honour at this year’s Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic at the Newark Showground on 6-7th January will be Michael Rutter, winner of 14 North West 200s, an unequalled eight Macau victories, five Isle of Man TT wins, and multiple BSB Superstock rounds.

The stunning new Z900RS retro is an up-to-date modern classic that pays homage to the legendary Z1. Providing supreme kerb appeal and the true spirit of riding satisfaction, the Z900RS is available in three different colour schemes, with three corresponding prices. The standard mean and moody Metallic Spark Black is starting at just £9,899, the special edition Metallic Matte Covert Green/Flat Ebony is £10,099, and the Z1-inspired Candytone Brown/Orange is £10,199. All three

versions will be in UK showrooms by the start of December. The new and eagerly anticipated Z900RS Cafe will join the Z900RS in dealers in March 2018. Thanks to its cafe racer-style front cowl, drop handlebar and striking Vintage Lime Green paint, the Z900RS Cafe takes the Z900RS in an exciting new direction and will be priced at £10,349. Get more info from your local Kawasaki dealer or www.kawasaki.co.uk

The show is the perfect opportunity to explore hundreds of classic bikes on display, and offers the chance to pick up a brand new project to start for 2018, or find the parts and spares to complete one and enjoy another year of motorcycling. As sponsors of the event, the team from Carole Nash will be in their marquee where they’ll be handing out goodie bags and giveaways as well as discussing insurance queries, and you’ll also be able to enter their free prize draw to win a fantastic biking prize. Get more info on tickets and stuff from the website at www. classicbikeshows.com JANUARY 2018

If you’re looking for a band for your event who don’t play the same old classic rock, then this lot might be just what you’re looking for. Fat Lip are an excellent pop punk band from Stoke-on-Trent who play dance-along covers of songs by Green Day, The Offspring, Blink 182, Bowling For Soup and the like. They’ve been playing together for a while now, and have built up a solid reputation for putting on a good gig. To get in touch with them, ring them on 07539 204169 or via their Facebook page.

The VMCC has announced the return of one of the best motorcycling events in Europe; the Festival of 1000 Bikes, combined with the Mallory Bonanza, at Mallory Park on the weekend of 6-8th July 2018. The festival will once again cover all aspects of classic motorcycling, and will feature public track sessions (on the Saturday), race bike track sessions (on the Sunday), pre-’65 trials, historic grass track racing, more than 50 club stands, trade stands, an autojumble, a bar marquee with panoramic view of the Stebbe straight, and much, much more. More details will be released over the coming weeks, but you can get more info from www.vmcc.net

NEW YAMAHA NIKEN

Yamaha has released the new Niken, the world’s first multi-wheel production motorcycle. This revolutionary new kind of motorcycle feels, handles and looks like nothing else, but its handling characteristics will also be reassuringly familiar to riders. The technology used in the double leaning front wheel layout offers high levels of traction, giving the rider the ability to carve through winding roads with unmatched confidence. And two front wheels means there are two front tyres and two sets of front brakes, so the levels of traction

Black Kat Kustoms is the brainchild of Tracey and Andrew Dyke from Shropshire, a bike building and leatherworking husband and wife team of note – they’ve had bikes accepted into the esteemed invite-only Radical Bike Show at Pecquencourt, and featured in BSH too.
