THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED…

…The electric car revolution that is. Is it happening? Is it here yet? Listening to the news and what industry pundits and commentators are constantly saying, you’d think it was literally happening now. And indeed, when I stop at a service area and see banks of Tesla chargers in the car park (and I’m not talking one or two, but dozens) it certainly seems to be on the horizon, or around the corner… or something. And yet, all these chargers are strangely deserted. It isn’t here yet; it hasn’t happened and electric cars still seem to be a bit of a pipe dream. The outcry for more and more to be done about carbon emissions gets louder by the day, whether it be Extinction Rebellion protests or Greta Thurnberg addressing the United Nations, or our own Parliament. All of this brings us to how we, as American car owners, square our hobby, pastime – love even, whatever you want to call it, with a growing antithesis to cars

and particularly ones with internal combustion engines and thirsty ones at that. I for one don’t feel guilty (should I?). My cars are 50/55 years old and as such represent the ultimate in make-do-and-mend driving – everyone knows that the amount of resources that go into building a new car easily outstrips any environmental ‘benefits’ that a newer, cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicle might offer. My cars might not be as fuel-efficient as a modern EV or more fuel-efficient ICE vehicle (Internal Combustion Engine!) but they’ve lasted five times the lifespan of your typical vehicle. Now, surely that’s efficiency in action?! This month’s magazine includes a supplement celebrating probably the American car scene’s most popular classic, the evergreen Ford Mustang. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the car’s popularity and relevance today – I hope you enjoy our paean to Ford’s pony car.

KINGSTOWN SHIPPING & RH INSURANCE COTY HEAT 1. Stunning heatwave weather meant that this year’s Surrey Street Rodders’ Wheels Day show was inundated with display cars and members of the public. That meant a packed show field and quite a challenge to pick out a car for the inaugural heat of this year’s Kingstown Shipping & RH Insurance Car of the Year competition. Fortunately Geofff and Jan Mitchell had taken along their stunning 1965 Chrysler 300L, one

of Chrysler’s legendary ‘letter cars,’ which was awarded the prize. This California black plate car boasts power windows, leather interior and 360bhp 413 cu in Wedge V8 engine, making it the perf rfect f epitome of a ‘gentleman’s muscle car’. The finals of this year’s Car of the Year competition will take place at the Classic Motor Show held at the NEC, Birmingham, over the weekend of November 8-10.

ROMSEY BOXING DAY CRUISE PHOTO WINNER Congratulations to Michael Guy who won the Romsey Boxing Day Cruise photo competition with this stunning image of a Camaro. Well done and your subscription is set up and ready to go – happy reading!

71% of Americans still fear self-driving cars A recent report from the American Automobile Association (AAA) revealed that 71% of Americans are still fearful of selfdriving cars. What’s interesting is that the results have been largely consistent for the last few years, despite automakers pouring billions of dollars into autonomous vehicle technology.

Date corrections

A couple of date gremlins crept into last month’s magazine; firstly the Stars & Stripes show at Tatton Park, Cheshire, was incorrectly dated, the correct dates are July 6 and 7; and Richie Gees Legendary Wildest Cats in Town Summer Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekender was incorrectly dated. The correct dates are July 4-8.

According to the AAA, this continuing public scepticism regarding autonomous vehicle technology could prove a serious roadblock to acceptance, at least in the short and medium term. A spate of collisions, including a highly-publicized incident when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a self-driving

Uber vehicle in Tempe, Arizona last year has done little to improve matters. Nevertheless, automakers and tech start-ups continue to push the technology, with cars continuing to log test miles across America, as well as the introduction of autonomous ride sharing services, such as Waymo’s program in Phoenix that began last December. In an effort to help educate consumers about AV technology, a coalition of 22 organisations was formed in January. Known as the Partnership for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE), it aims to educate lawmakers and consumers on the benefits of AV technology through initiatives such as test drives, workshops and information sessions. PAVE is hoping that it can use this strategy to help conquer consumers’ fear of the unknown and increase public acceptance of the technology. HE
