Asserting that education is one of the most important sectors, Congress Legislature Party leader Tokheho Yepthomi today stressed on the need to bring reform and changes in the education department in Nagaland. Speaking at the ques-
tion hour of the ongoing 2nd session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) here today, Tokheho lamented that the performance of government schools was discouraging in the HSLC and HSSLC examinations when compared to private schools. Stating that there are plenty of proxy teachers in the state, he asserted that
quality education is not going to improve unless teachers are checked. Appreciating the suggestions of the CLP leader, Minister for School Education, CM Chang assured that the department would definitely do the same. Earlier, in reply to a starred question raised by Tokheho on funds received from Government
of India under SSA and RMSA from 2008 to March 2013, the Minister said that a total amount of Rs. 37447.98 lakh was received from the GoI under SSA from 2008 to March 2013. Why has the number of liquor dens gone up, or alcohol consumption remained high? These things need to be reviewed,” he reiterated. Rio admitted today that the NLTPA has been a failure and apart from “thorough public discussion”, a technical committee should be appointed to present technical views on the Act. “It is very important, and only proper, to review any act from time to time,” stated a church leader, “but

Though there is no data to substantiate either of the claims, both the church and the mothers feel it is time to review the Act. “It needs to be put through public debate first,” maintained Meru, and also that this should be done with intent to amend, not remove the Act. Rio pointed out today that the NLTPA needs serious study about its effects, and that of spurious liquor manufacturers making huge profits. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has agreed to constitute a committee comprising of Naga leaders to look into the details of The Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989 (NLTPA). NCP MLA and Chairman of MACROFED, Mmhonlumo Kikon, today called for the assessment and review of the Act, in the 24th year of its enactment, at the second session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. “It is essential for a committee to review if alcohol consumption has increased or decreased since the Act has been in place, if drug use has risen
it should be done with an open mind, not with an agenda. All stakeholders of the Act should be consulted for a review.” According to this leader, who prefers to stay anonymous in the face of this “sensitive issue”, consumption of liquor has reduced since the Act was enacted in 1989, before which alcohol was openly sold and consumed. The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) disagrees. “Prohibition, it seems, has not helped at all. There

Congress Legislature Party leader Tokheho Yepthomi opined, “We should cautiously take care of this issue and see that we do not commit mistake again.” He added, “Let us not have confrontation attitude.” He also suggested a special session on the matter, where all 60 members of the House can speak and share their opinions. Deliberating on the issue, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio agreed to the remarks of the CLP leader of not confronting the GoI, but to go cautiously and seek the cooperation and understanding of the GoI. “Our intention is not to confront but to speak our rights which are enshrined in the Constitution of India in Article 371 (A),” Rio reiterated. Echoing the views of the CLP leader, Rio admitted that mistakes were committed in the past by allowing survey, investigation and even trial to ONGC. “They misused the trust and that’s why public agitation and operation was stopped in 1994.”

The Nagaland Baptist Church Council declined to comment on the issue at this point of time. “The Act has failed to check the crookedness of bootleggers, and there has been no proper implementation of the Act anywhere but in Dimapur. • ACAUT resolves ban on poultry import stands • Sale of locally reared and bred chicken allowed in selected places DIMAPUR, JULY 20 (MExN): The Action Committee against Unabated Taxation in its meeting with the Dimapur Poultry Farmers’ Association has resolved that while the June 20 resolution to ban import of all poultry into Dimapur still stands, sale of locally reared and bred chicken would be allowed in the interest of Naga farmers. A press note from the ACAUT informed that the DPFA would be allowed to sell broiler chicken reared by Naga farmers at selected places like two & half mile junction, Purana Bazar, Super Market, Notun Bosti junction, PWD junction and Sub-jail junction. The ACAUT further said that locally reared Broiler chicken would be sold as per DMC rate, i.e. Rs 110
and Rs 130 for whole sale and retail respectively. It added that there is no restriction on sale of localbred chicken and other breeds of chicken like koiler, etc anywhere, “other than the import ban.” It was informed that the DPFA would strictly implement the resolutions with the help of DNSU. It further cautioned that non compliance to the directives would be dealt with strictly. This decision, according to the ACAUT “should under ideal circumstances boost our local economy and help our educated unemployed youths find a source of livelihood in poultry and allied sector.” The note also informed that DPFA has decided to strictly abide by the June 5 public resolution, where-
in it was resolved that “no businesses would pay any form of tax to any factions unless the issue of multiple taxations and syndicate/ dealerships is resolved.” The ACAUT said that multiple taxations and syndicate/dealership system, apart from destroying businesses, livelihoods and contributing to price rise has also made it impossible for Naga entrepreneurs and businesses to flourish. It asserted that the ACAUT “is not merely concerned with illegal taxations” but that a sense of social responsibility always takes precedence in its decisions. It added, “ACAUT believes the time is now right for Nagas to venture into entrepreneurship and businesses without the burden of taxation to weigh us down.”

Confined in solitude for years, the lone leopard at Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP), Dimapur has at last got a companion. The female feline, christened Rani now has the company of a male leopard from Kaziranga National Park on Saturday, July 20. The latest member of the zoo, lovingly called Doom (after the name of the place where he was found) was raised at Kaziranga’s Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation & Conservation (CWRC). Now aged seven, he was found abandoned as a three-month old cub at a tea estate in Doom Dooma, Tinsukia, Assam. Doom was transported by road in a specially designed enclosure escorted by handlers, who were led by Rathin Barman, Deputy Director, Wildlife Trust

tral Zoo Authority (CZA). The transper of captive wildlife from one place to the other is permitted only after the consent of the
CZA, which is the apex zoo control authority in India. Doom will now share a spacious wire-meshed enclosure with the NZP’s resident leopardess – Rani. Coincidentally, Rani joined the facility on July 20 four years ago. But before they share the dwelling, handlers at the zoo will have to first get the pair acquainted with each other. The aim is to increase the number of residents in the facility, which will, hopefully attract more visitors. Other residents of the park – great Indian hornbill, redbilled hornbill and cat langur - require companions as well. Nagaland Zoological Park covers a sprawling 176 hectares in area of which around 50 hectares have been utilised. There is room to further increase the number of residents provided it gets the required funds. Continued on page 5

Dimapur, July 20 (mExN): The PTYF has stated that it is constraint to go public for installation of ATM booth at Pfutsero. The reason is that despite assurances, there has been no positive result. This was stated in a press note issued by Weto Kapfo, Advisor, PTYF and Deko Chiero General Secretary, PTYF. The note mentioned that Pfutsero is one of the main centres of Phek district. The sub-division caters to more than 3 towns and 17 villages of the area. It also pointed out that the then ADC Pfutsero, Robert Longchari, acknowledged the need of the area and took up the matter with the AGM, SBI in 2011, gaining the assurance that the first ATM machine that arrived in Nagaland would be installed at Pfutsero. Again, in February, 2012, the then AGM (SBI) A.K. Das, at the time of inauguration of the Kikruma Satellite Branch
once more assured the installation of the ATM at Pfutsero within three months. However till date, the wait is still on. No doubt, the PTYF expresses its gratitude to the SBI for their invaluable service in catering to the needs of Pfutsero and its adjoining areas. However, it stated that without a single ATM booth, it is affecting the business as well as the dwellers of the town. It has also become inconvenient for the travelers who pass through the town. Moreover, many a time villagers who come to draw money from the bank are unable to do so because of the long queues which reach upto the corridor and the cash transaction period being hardly for about four hours. The PTYF therefore in the note earnestly requested the concerned authority to kindly materialize the assurance given.

Dearth of corpses hits medical education
guwaHatI, July 20 (tnn): Dearth of corpses is hampering medical education in the state. According to Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines, eight students can work on one cadaver for anatomical dissection. However, due to lack of bodies, one cadaver is available for more than 16 students. The head of the anatomy department in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital ( GMCH), K L Talukdar, said, "Shortage of bodies are creating a problem for the students. "The recent killing of three newspaper employees, namely Sujit Bhattcharjee, Ranjit Chaudhary and Balaram Ghosh in Tripura, when they were working in the office of Dainik Ganadoot, an Agartala-based Bengali newspaper, speaks volumes about the sense of vulnerability for media persons in northeast India," JFA president Rupam Baruah said. In 1978, we told Muivah and Isak not to form a new government against the existing Naga national Government (FGN) and should not be repeated the mistake like that of the formation of Revolutionary government in 1968. But they did not take heed to us, and formed the so-called NSCN in 1980, and then, started killings their own Naga brothers who refused to support the NSCN. In 2005, I told my Khiamniungan brothers not to create another group again, because the Nagas have been suffered from killing each other and now faded-up with the factions. But they did not take heed to my advice and created Singnya group in 2005. Then after, they started to kill and torture their own brothers who do not support them particularly in Khiamniungan and Chakhesang Regions. In 2011, Khule and Ketovi defected from Khaplang faction and made their own group and started killings those who do not support them, which are going on till date. I told Dr. Wati and Dr. V.K. Nuh through phone when they started the formation of Forum For Naga Reconciliation (FNR) in 2008, that if you do think to form a another organization or government in the interest of reconciliation, it will be only creation of a new faction and will not form as reconciliation; and in the history it will be recorded that Dr. Wati and Dr. V.K. Nuh also formed another faction in the 21st century. Again when Dr. Wati met me on 17th November 2011, I asked him; do you accept the Nagaland as an independent country? He said, the Nagas are independent nation and we are working to defend our sovereignty". That's right, I said, and continued saying; as the Nagas are independent nation, they have their own Naga national Government known as Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) which was formed in 1956 by all Naga leaders from Ao, Konyak, Phom, Chang, Sangtam, Yimchunger, Khiamniungan, Lotha, Rengma, Angami, Chakhesang, Shepoumaramth and Zeliangrong Regions. Now Naga national Government is running more than fifty years and its Golden Jubilee was celebrated in March 2006. Knowing all these, why do you need to form another Naga National government? For what purpose and what will you do with it? Indeed, I am in favor and support of working for peace and reconciliation. For peace, we have to establish what is truth and justice, and for reconciliation, it must be political reconciliation but not of factional reconciliation. The Nagas have legitimate foundation and national principle established by our forefathers and handed

public discoursE down to us; this is a common ground and foundation for all the Nagas to reunite. But it is sad to learn that the FNR is gaining more support to form the so-called provisional Naga national government (NNG-P). Even if they formed the NNG-P, most of the Naga people will not support it. Because they have their own National Government and national political institution (NNC), therefore no more national governments are needed for them. Then, will they kill the Nagas again for not supporting the NNG-P? To eliminate good Naga leaders, innocent Naga people and to destroy the legitimate Naga national foundation are not taken as a sort of defending our nation or an achievement for the Nagas. But all these are recorded as treacherous acts and political blunder in the history. Such mistake should not be repeated by the young generations of today. Our forefathers had founded Nagaland on the solid rock, so, what the need to do by us today is, to work in one accord for the achievement of recognition of our sovereignty by the world; but not to form factions, new governments one after another and neither to demand any political status (greater Nagaland, integration, super-state, alternative arrangement etc.) from India. United Naga Democratic Party on Article 371 (A) On 26-07-2010, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly adopted resolution on the Ownership and Transfer of land & its Resources as envisaged under Article 371 (A) of the Constitution of’ India. The NLA resolved for fresh modalities to be framed by the State of Nagaland on Petroleum and Natural resources development. With hinges developing on the said resolution, the Govt. of Nagaland has taken a U turn and called a consultative meeting of various representatives including the Naga Hoho on 12-07-2013. The UNDP as a political party, would like to highlight in the interpretation of Article 371 (A) where there has been divergent approach. Nagaland unlike other States of Union of India is borne out of 16 (sixteen) Point Agreement which otherwise, was out of the Union of Indian. While accommodating Nagaland as the 16 (Sixteen) State in the Union of India, the framers of the Constitution of India using the wisdom had given the Naga people rights over their religious or social practice, their custom and procedure, their way of civil & Criminal justice according to their customary law and protection of ownership and transfer of land and its resources. With the passing of years, polarization as regard to monetary interest has crept in where there
is contentious craze for financial benefits to acquire from the Natural Resources of the State. The UNDP would like to highlight the public of the State and convey that, the land and its resources whatever it be so, belongs to the land-owners who through generations have inherited right and ownership over the land. The popular government which represents the people has to take into confidence of the people whom they represent for any decision taken by them and not act in a dictatorial or deceiving manner to become the owner of the inherited land of the people. Any contentious issue cannot be decided unilaterally and enforce on the masses but the public/ citizens of the state has to be taken into confidence through proper consultation before any rules regulations or resolutions are frame /passed keeping in mind that the general public are the custodian upon which the government stand. Definition of Democracy states that, the government stands for the people, of the people & by the people. Before any consultation was made, the government by resolution dated 26-072010 had adopted its resolution on the ownership & transfer of land and its resources and only on 12-07-2013 the State government has called for consultative meeting of the people. This action of government shows immaturity of the policy makers which is highly condemnable. The UNDP therefore, would like to express that any resolution taken on the Mineral resources of the State should be passed after a proper consultation with the LAND OWNERS of the State with Hohos to build a true welfare State which only can be said as a mandated of the people. robert Y. Kikon General secretary (Adm) UNDP, Nagaland
Race Of Faith In Self Rectification One of the greatest Olympic winners of all time was Paavo Nurmi, who won 12 Olympic medals, nine of them gold in long distance running in the early 1920s. When he ran something caught people’s attention from his hand. He always carried a stop watch. Before anyone said anything he already knew if he was running well or not! The Christian life ought to be like that too, the race of faith! We don’t need a stop watch but we ought to see how we’re measuring up to life challenges. The only way ahead is to think about, ‘what we’re doing, why we are doing it and what’s at the end of it?’ Because when we are in God’s presence and we recognize the mistakes we have made, at least, we can then hope to get things right and move on with our live. Do you know what one of the greatest risks that we face in our daily life today? Focusing on the faults of others, especially those you well but climbing the ladder
of success passing over you! It’s always so easy to see what others do wrong or badly; it’s quite another story when it comes to seeing what we do wrong or badly actually! The Bible says don’t judge others. We should only judge ourselves for a better change. So, all the energy we waste looking outwards should be used more productively looking our inwards to check what our failures are and seek to rectify them. If we don’t we will suffer the consequence of your own sin, which can be fatal. The Bible says that if we judge others rather than ourselves, we are preparing our own trial. And we all know what the verdict would be, guilty! If we want to be different in our lives it would be if we’d only learn this lesson! The Bible reminds us to always check our actions against what the word of God says to us and expects of us? In our spiritual lives, in our relationship with others, in our work places, in our service to the church, or in our obedience to God Himself! We must always examine ourselves in the light of the ‘Word of God’. Then only, we can change things, we can learn from our past actions, see where we are going wrong or right to reach the goal in life! If you don’t make good to your mistakes, God will do it for you. “If we carefully judge our-selves we won’t be punished” 1 Cor. 11:31. THE COMPETITORS CREED I am Created in the Image and Likeness of GOD. I am a Competitor Now and Forever. I will play only for ONE audience – JESUS I will Display my Talents in the form of Worshiping God.
I face my Challengers with the Face of Christ! I do not Boast in my Abilities, or Believe in my own Strength. I rely solely on the Resurrection of Jesus, and His power. I Compete for the Pleasure of my Heavenly Father! My body is the Temple of the living God - I am the Holy temple! The Holy Spirit dwells in my body; I must protect it from within. And nothing enters my body that does not glorify the Living GOD. My Sweat is an Offering - my Soreness is a Sacrifice to my Savior! My Attitude on and off the Field is above Reproach Whether in my Practicing or Playing I summit to God’s Authority. I will Love and respect my Neighbors (Opponents, Teammates & Referees)! I Give my ALL to JESUS. I do not give up - I do not give out! I am willing to accept the Outcome of the Competition in God’s hand. The Result of all my Effort must result in Christ alone! …..wow to JESUS!!! God’s blessing to those who rectifies True Identity in Christ!

he Midday Meal Scheme was initiated in the 1960s involving provision of free lunch on working days in schools. The key objectives of the programme include:Protecting children from classroom hunger, increasing school enrollment and attendance, improved socialisation among children belonging to all castes, addressing malnutrition, and social empowerment through provision of employment to women. The scheme has a long history, especially in Tamil Nadu as it was introduced by the then Chief Minister K Kamaraj in the 1960s and later expanded by the M. G. Ramachandran Government in 1982. It has been adopted by almost every States after a landmark direction by the Supreme Court of India on November 28, 2001. The success of this scheme is illustrated by the tremendous increase in the school participation and completion rates in Tamil Nadu. NGO’s have a main part in the preparation of the midday meal scheme. However, the scheme was soon marred by several scams, which have been unearthed since it was started in 1960. Distribution of contract of Midday meal scheme is one of the most corrupt practice in the country. In December 2005: The Delhi Police had seized eight truckloads (2,760 sacks) of rice meant for primary schoolchildren being carried from Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns in Bulandshahr District of UP to North Delhi. When the Police detained the trucks, the drivers claimed that the rice was being brought all the way to Delhi to be cleaned at a factory. However, according to the guidelines, the rice has to be taken directly from FCI godown to the school or village concerned. Later, it was found that the rice was being siphoned off by a UP-based NGO, Bharatiya Manav Kalyan Parishad (BMKP), in connivance with the Government officials. In January 2006: The Delhi Police unearthed a scam in the Midday Meal Scheme.
In November 2006: The residents of Pembong village under the Mim tea estate (around 30 km from Darjeeling), accused a group of teachers of embezzling midday meals. In a written complaint, the residents claimed that students at the primary school had not got midday meal for the past 18 months. Mar 5, 2006: One of the leading national dailies reported that the midday meal scheme in Punjab schools was floundering rules badly. Government schools across the State were grappling with administrative neglect and an unresponsive Government that had resulted in abject failure of the scheme. Needless to mention the pathetic condition of classrooms.

reported busted a scam involving Government schools that siphoned off food grains under the midday meal scheme by faking attendance. The modus operandi of the schools was simple—the attendance register would exaggerate the number of students enrolled in the class. The additional students would not exist—they were ‘enrolled’ to get additional food grains which were pocketed by the school staff. The scam was exposed, when P Asha Kumari, an assistant teacher at the Government model primary school, Jakkur, in Yelahanka acted as a whistle-blower. She informed the Lokayukta, who conducted a probe and indicted four persons for misappropriation. The whistle-blower was harassed by the school staff and requested a transfer. She was transferred to a Government primary school at Cholanayakahalli, where she again found the same modus operandi being used to siphon off the food grains. She again complained to the Lokayukta, who issued notice to the school.
In March 26, 2012: School children did not receive the prescribed nutrition under the midday meal scheme in Goa, according to the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India’s report. There was no check on the quality too as the State monitoring committee for the scheme did not meet even once from 2006 to 2011. Bihar mid-day meal tragedy
'death, not food was served on their plates'
A Students wash their plates after having a mid-day meal in New Delhi. In a tragic incident, 22 children died and atleast 27 are admitted to the hospital after eating food from a mid-day meal in a state-run primary school in Bihar's Saran district on Tuesday. The mid-day meal scheme was introduced by the government to encourage education among the poor by providing free food. We give you pictures from all over the country exhibiting the success of this scheme on only one strategy - nutrition support.
C
Soutik Biswas | BBC News n a country where nearly half of the children are undernourished and struggle to go to school, the programme is a weapon to tackle hunger and illiteracy. Economists believe the programme bolsters primary school enrolment and attendance, eliminates hunger, enables children from diverse class and caste backgrounds to share a meal together and bury social prejudices, and provides children with hygiene and nutritional education. There is enough evidence to prove that the programme has, by and large, been a success, they say. That's precisely why the deaths of more than 20 school children after consuming contaminated free meals in Bihar state is shocking. As with most of India's large state-run social schemes, the performance of the free meals programme varies from state to state. States like Tamil Nadu - where the mid-day meal began in the city of Chennai (Madras) as early as 1925 - and Kerala and Orissa have reported good results. Results in laggard states like Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal have been less than impressive. The source of the food contamination in the Bihar school is not entirely clear yet India's Mid-Day - doctors say that they have found Meal programme evidence of insecis the world's most ticide in the food; other reports talk ambitious free school about contamifeeding programme, nated vegetable providing cooked oil used in cooking. Tainted food meals to more than supplies or awful 120 million children kitchen hygiene in over a million could have led to the tragedy. schools across Whatever the the country. reason, Bihar, one of India's poorest states with a shoddy record in social welfare, has a long way to go in delivering an efficient mid-day meal programme for its more than 70,000 schools. Most of the beneficiaries come from poor families with an average annual income of $396 (£262) and where a third of the parents are illiterate, according to government estimates. A 2010 study by India's Planning Commission found that more than 70% of children in the sampled schools in Bihar were unhappy with the quality of the food served. A fifth of them said they did not get adequate meals. Three-quarters of the schools reported they did not have adequate utensils for cooking. The study also found that many schools in the state also did not receive their food stock "in a planned manner on a monthly basis, as a result of which a few schools were overstocked, resulting in breeding of insects [in the food]". Despite all this, more children have enrolled in schools across the state since the programme was introduced eight years ago. Economist Reetika Khera, who has extensively researched the programme, says the Bihar deaths are a "terrible tragedy". But, she says, they also come at a time when the programme is steaming ahead, and "showing huge improvements" mostly in northern India, where it was kick-started following a November 2001 directive from the Supreme Court to provide "cooked meals to all primary school children". "When the scheme began in northern Indian I remember many schools had no place to cook, no water. Teachers would double up as cooks, and children would collect firewood. Now schools have cooks and helpers, utensils and proper kitchen sheds for the cooking," says Dr Khera. Even the quality of meals has improved, say economists. In Rajasthan, remembers Dr Khera, children would be served unappetising meals of boiled wheat spiked with sugar and salt in the early days of the programme. Now the meals have become nutritious with a wide ranging and appetising mix. The state of Tamil Nadu provides a boiled egg to every child every day of the week. Rajasthan gives fruit to every child twice a week. The Bihar tragedy, say economists like Dr Khera, is not an indictment of the programmes. But it proves India needs to tighten up its hygiene (children have fallen ill in Bihar and Goa and Delhi in the recent past after school meals) and improve safety at school kitchens (more than 80 children were killed in a kschool fire in Tamil Nadu in 2004) to make the MidDay Meal a programme it can be truly proud of.
mid the massive mid-day meal tragedy unfolding in Bihar, a nasty political blame-game has begun over who was responsible for the deaths of 21 children. While the Opposition in Bihar has slammed the Nitish Kumar government for being "insensitive" and "callous", the ruling Janata Dal(United) or JD(U) has hit back, alleging political conspiracy. Here is what leaders said over the incident: MM Pallam Raju, Union Human Resource Development Minister: It looks like a case of contamination of food but we are awaiting forensic report... This is an example where we should exercise caution. We will know the forensic report by today evening. Rajiv Pratap Rudy, BJP Spokesperson: The chief minister of Bihar in-
stead of showing promptness in evacuating the children to a better medical facility has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs. 2 lakh for the children who died after having a mid-day meal. This showcases the insensitivity and the callous attitude. Jagdambika Pal, Congress leader: Earlier, too, complaints have come in Bihar and still they did not look into it due to which 20 children died yesterday. In a way, they did not serve food but death on their plates. KC Tyagi, JD(U) leader: The way the opposition of Bihar is responding, irrespective of their ideology and philosophy, is very sad... The reports that the doctors have given is that the cook is also the victim... I feel that it is a big conspiracy to destabilise the Bihar government. Shakeel Ahmed, Congress leader: BJP
should not politicize this issue... They are demanding Nitish Kumar's resignation just beacuser he is not in alliance Manish Tewari, Information and Broadcasting Minister: Extremely unfortunate incident.State govt must investigate matter & take action against guilty- #Biharmiddaymeal Tariq Anwar, NCP leader: Earlier also we have received similar complaints... ondemning the alarming neglect and continuing political indifference towards the midday meal programme, education experts and child rights activists are urging the government to clean up the rot in the system to avert another Bihar-like tragedy. Twenty-two children have died in a government primary school in Bihar’s Saran district after consuming contaminated mid-day meals. The Nitish Kumar government, however, has alleged that the meals were deliberately poisoned. Says Ambarish Rai, convenor of the Right to Education Forum, an umbrella group of civil society groups, “What has happened in Bihar is a prime example of how government schools are neglecting the programme. Why doesn’t this happen in the Kendriya Vidyalayas, or the Pratibha Vidyalayas, or unaided or aided private schools? It is because these schools are neglected and the children who go these schools are neglected… This is an attack on the dignity of children. This is an example of negligence

I
f there’s one thing we were made to do, it’s worship. Yet that calling will not come without a fight. I will never forget walking into a church service for the first time after I had received Christ. It was like hearing the music through a brand-new set of ears. It seemed so different to how I’d heard it before! The church that day was singing the old song, “I Hear the Sound of the Army of the Lord.” People from all walks of life—all ages, different denominational backgrounds and differing musical preferences— sang together, and here it was: the sound of one voice, one heart, one song, a sound more spiritual than musical but so beautiful. It’s still etched on my heart today. It was the sound of the church at worship. A song of the heart, not just the mouth. A song that had a measure of eternity woven throughout it. A sound that included us all and valued us all. A sound we were born to recognize and contribute to. The sound of grateful hearts. I’ve given my life to this heavenly song. A Sound Like No Other Music is created to give voice to the human condition. It’s a powerful vehicle of expression for the human heart. It communicates the cries, elation, anguish, joys, highs and lows. When mere language is insufficient, music speaks on. In Psalm 71, David says, “When I open up in song to You, I let out lungsful of praise, my rescued life a song” (v. 23, MSG). This is where the praise of God is unlike any other music you’ll ever hear. It’s not about style, volume or methods. It’s about genuine thanksgiving being released from grateful hearts. Matthew 7:6 in The Message says, “Don’t be flip with the sacred.” Yale professor Nicholas Wolterstorff once said, “Each people group, each generation, needs to be able to express its
sense of worship in its own voice, in a way that resonates deep in the soul.” Just because a sound is not our style, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t sacred. If worship isn’t dependent on a particular style or sound, then what is worship? The simplest explanation is that it is the giving of due worth to God. The word worthship would be an appropriate way to describe the act of worship, for God alone is worthy of all worship, honor, glory and praise. Worship is the inevitable result of the created—you and me—catching a glimpse of the reality of Christ and then responding. Unfortunately, the word worship gets flattened out all the time and reduced to a set of neat songs that make us feel good. But this isn’t even the starting point for truthful worship. Truthful lives of worship involve our entire existence (Rom. 12:1-2). Music, melody, art, dance, creativity—all these things give voice to the mystery and hiddenness of the human heart. Our cries, prayers and journeys, formed into songs, allow the heart to be expressed in a tangible way. In our natural bodies, when our hearts shut down, our lives shut down. The same applies to the power of praise and worship in song. When our praise shuts down, our hearts become small and stifled, and it affects our whole lives. Our lives are the substance of the song we sing, living in tune with the great Orchestrator Himself. Lamentations 5 describes a people who feel forgotten by God and a moment when they had no worship: “The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their music. The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning” (vv. 14-15, ASV). Even in the most challenging times, the art and discipline of lifting our voices to the truth of the Word of God is part of the miracle of praise, remembering that we cannot even utter the words “Jesus is

Why You Must Fight to Worship Darlene Zschech
Lord” and mean it but by the Spirit of God (1 Cor. 12:3). And so we lean into His breath and His power every single time we praise, bringing forth life through gratitude.
A Choice Rooted in Humility Worship has always required choice and change. It identifies which kingdom you belong to, and it has always been about the glory of God. Isaiah 43:7 says we were all created for His glory. The entirety of humanity was designed to adore and connect with the fullness of God. This means our need to worship is built into us—it’s part of our DNA. It is the ultimate expression that our existence craves. Furthermore, if we don’t worship our Lord, we will end up in idolatry, which is the act of placing our affections on anything higher than God. Usually we do this because we want to control the outcome. Yet as Eugene Peterson writes, “God cannot be fit into our plans, we must fit into his.” We can’t use God—He is not a tool or an appliance or a credit card. Holy is the word that sets God apart and sets Him above our attempts to enlist Him in our wish-fulfillment fantasies or our utopian
schemes for making our mark in the world. Holy means that God is alive on God’s terms, alive in a way that exceeds our experience and imagination. Holy refers to life that burns with an intense purity and transforms everything it touches into itself. There are countless millions who cannot play a note of music but are incredible worshippers. Conversely, there are many others, extremely gifted in music and song, who are poor worshippers. Worship is not about operating in our gifts and feeling fulfilled, but it has always been and will always be an anthem of the heart. Jesus Himself said that true worship must be in spirit and in truth, and the only way this is possible is through grace. Not one of us could ever claim we don’t rely on His grace to stand before His throne. Only by the cross—only by the blood—can we freely enter this glorious place of worship and adoration, thanksgiving and praise. The Father seeks for us to worship Him (John 4:24), and He will continually teach us to worship Him. This is said beautifully in Geoffrey Bingham’s book, The Way and Wonder of Worship: “Something of our
fallen humanity—our human flesh—mingles with the worship that the Spirit inspires. Yet this does not mean that such worship is unacceptable to God. Worship is commanded and, as we have said, is offered through grace, and so is accepted by grace. Therefore, we can be at peace concerning the worship we offer to God.”
A Step Up to the Truest Life Psalm 100 tells us to “enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise” (v. 4, NRSV). We are meant to sing a new song. Sing, sing, sing! Yet because strength and joy are found in God’s presence, it’s no surprise the enemy works so hard to try to silence our song. In Matthew 4, Satan tries to lure Jesus by his cunning words and empty promises. “Kneel down and worship me,” he says. You see, Satan has always craved our worship. In Isaiah 14:13, we learn the deceiver said in his heart, “I will ascend to the heavens, higher than God.” Satan is always trying to exalt himself first in our life, followed by any other idol he possibly can get us to worship—the kingdoms of this world, the culture, the values, the seductions. Yet to love God and wor-
ship Him with our lives is our ultimate satisfaction. When you have positioned yourself in His presence, it doesn’t take long for the reality of the world and its heaviness to fade in the glory of God and His promise over our lives. So how do you begin to live this way? For starters, always remember that God is not looking for an outside-in, performancebased or talent-based offering. He has always been looking for an offering of the heart. When it comes to our personal journey of worship and praise, you have to remember this is a journey of faith. Without faith, we rely on our own ability and understanding, our own skill level and our own favor—and living like this makes it impossible to please God. Coming to Him in worship takes faith. Leading others in worship takes faith. Revelation 4:1 says, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things” (NASB). This is one of the great worship passages in Revelation. And it surprises me that even as this great prophecy is being revealed to John, as he’s gazing at an open door in heaven, still he is required to take a step up—to “come up here.” In Exodus 24, the Lord says the same thing to Moses: “Come up” (v. 1). He asks Moses to step out of his limitations and come up the mountain to worship. Always, faith is required. We take a step from the temporal to the eternal. We take the song of the soul and join it with the great anthem of the Spirit. We take a step from the emotional realm to the truth realm. We put on a garment of praise for our spirit of heaviness. Yes, we need to come up. Taking a step up takes energy, a yielding of the will and a willingness to step out of the boat. And even though this first step forward makes you feel vulnerable, it’s the safest place in the world to be. As we come up, we take
others with us and teach their hearts to trust. I’ve heard many times from onlookers that they’ve learned trust in worship through watching our lives—by watching us continually grow through trials and fall into the arms of an ever-loving God. It’s part of the beauty of His body. As I observe people in developing nations and watch them connect with God, they really take on this command to come up—it is literally life to them. So come up, come up, come up!
A Gift of the Greatest Presence One thing I know is that the earth is desperate for the presence of God—as am I! The raw dynamic of His Being and Person stepping into our existence is something you never want to be without. The tender presence we become aware of in worship is God’s abiding presence—a nearness that is often evident to the redeemed. Even today, as I spoke to a friend who is critically ill, she shared with me her lack of fear. She explained, “It’s not that I’m brave. It’s just that I am so aware of God’s love and kindness toward me. I sense His constant presence.” So, dear friends, I pray you catch my heart for you today. I encourage you to lean in to all that God Himself is offering you today through His Son Jesus Christ and to allow the breath and power of the Holy Spirit to fill you afresh as you simply and wholeheartedly worship Jesus. His love for you is immeasurable. His glory is rising across the earth as the water covers the seas. I pray that we, His sons and daughters, will continue to see our lives poured out in response to His great love—for this is our spiritual act of worship.

Top 10 rudest things people do in church Redemptive Criticism (and Other Virtues)
J. Lee Grady t doesn’t bother me anymore to hear a phone ringing during a church service. It’s part of life in the 21st century. But I’ll admit I was shocked last month when I heard a ringtone while I was preaching—and a woman seated in the third row pulled her phone out of her purse and began a lengthy conversation as if she were in the waiting room of a beauty parlor. That incident prompted me to post a question on Facebook the next day. I asked my friends to share their own stories of rudeness in church. That triggered an avalanche of pent-up frustration about crinkly peppermint wrappers, loud music, smelly feet (yes, someone took off their shoes during the service), unruly children, coffee-sipping saints and parishioners who try to finish their pastors’ sentences during sermons. When I tallied the responses, I came up with this list of the rudest things people do in church:
I
1. Talking during a service.
2. Texting or surfing the web during a service. (One person mentioned seeing people playing video games on their phones.) 3. Sleeping—or snoring!—during a sermon.
4. Clipping fingernails during church. (I was amazed at how many people listed this offense. One person said his church’s sound
technician clipped his nails routinely during the sermon, and it was amplified over the loud speaker.) 5. Answering a ringing phone in church.
6. Constantly getting up and leaving the auditorium, presumably to use the restroom. 7. Walking out of a service early, especially during a prayer.
8. Letting babies cry incessantly in the service. 9. Chewing or smacking gum. (One friend from Puerto Rico said he is particularly annoyed when people “chew gum like a goat.”)
10. Public display of affection. (One person complained about a man and wife who enjoy giving each other back rubs during worship.) Those were the most common replies. Other infractions mentioned in my unscientific poll included (1) “Pushing people to the floor while praying for them”; (2) “Saying ‘Amen’ 100 times during the sermon”; (3) “Taking change from the offering plate”; (4) “Swearing in church” (I didn’t ask for the details on that!); and (5) “Drinking beverages during the entire service.” But as I mused over these replies, I couldn’t help but wonder: What does God consider rude? I don’t think He’s too annoyed by crying babies or rambunctious children. Nor do I think God is offended if a husband
and wife get slightly cozy in church. And surely God has compassion for a person whose tiny bladder forces them to go to the restroom more often than everyone else. Some of us just need to lighten up and extend grace to latecomers, fidgety kids, teeth-grinders, young mothers with infants and people who have to report to work promptly at 1 p.m. But when I look at the Bible, it’s obvious God doesn’t like it when people refuse to focus their attention when He’s talking. He has called us to listen. Moses told the Hebrews they would be blessed if theylistened to God’s commandments (Deut. 11:27, NASB). Solomon said that when we come to God’s house we should “draw near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools” (Eccl. 5:1, emphasis added). Isaiah said that God awakened him “to listen as a disciple” (Isa. 50:4, emphasis added), while Jeremiah rebuked Israel because they “did not listen or incline their ears” (Jer. 17:23, emphasis added). And when Jesus was glorified in His transfiguration, the Father declared, “Listen to Him!” (Luke 9:35, emphasis added). There is no possible way we can please God or be His faithful followers if we don’t learn to listen. Yet today we live in a distracted culture. We are sleep-deprived multitaskers. We surf the web while we watch TV; we text while we drive; we tweet while we work; we take calls when we are meeting friends for conversation. Some people even crash into each other while walking on sidewalks because they are too busy Googling to see another distracted Googler headed straight toward them. We are so focused on everything that we can’t focus on anything. I sometimes wonder if the proliferation of fast food, sugary drinks, movies on demand, “smart” phones and 24-hour news isn’t rewiring our brains so we can’t focus on what’s really important. We’re turning into media zombies. I’m not bashing technology. But we could lose the art of discipleship if we don’t reclaim the habit of careful listening. That means when we come to church, especially, we should not just turn off our phones but also tune out all other distractions so we can focus on what God is saying to us—through the preacher, the worship songs, the prayers and the Holy Spirit’s still, small voice. Please don’t be rude to God. Don’t just go to church. Go and hear the word of the Lord. Don’t talk, text, sleep or take calls when He is speaking. Listen as if your life depended on it. J. ow have the past 10 years changed me? I hope I’m more dependent. The most important thing to me in the Christian life is depending on Jesus. You make a declaration of dependence. I’m much less independent than I’ve ever been in my life. When you’re young, you’re cocky. You’re prideful. You think, I know how to do it. Nobody is more arrogant than the third-year seminary student who thinks he’s got a plan to build the church and hasn’t built anything. It takes about 10 years to knock the ego you built in seminary out of you. After 10 years, then God can really start using you. When I get up in the morning, my feet don’t touch the floor, I don’t get out of bed, till I have a long prayer that I pray every morning. Part of that prayer is, “Dear God, if I don’t get anything else done today, I want to love You more and know You better, because that’s what I was put here on earth to do. If at the end of the day I don’t know You a little bit more and love You a little better, I’ve missed the first purpose of my life.” Because God didn’t put me on earth to mark things off my to-do list.
It doesn’t matter how many things I accomplish or how many awards I win or how many interviews I do, if I’m not closer to Jesus, if I’m not walking with Him. Jesus is my best friend, and I’ve walked with him now for over 50 years. And I talk with him just like I’m talking to you. In fact, I’ll often talk to Him and talk to you at the same time. And so, being more dependent on God is the most important thing.
Being more gracious is the second most important thing. You can tell a person’s relationship to God not by their theology, but by their kindness and their joy. A lot of guys have a great theology, but they don’t know
God—you don’t see it.
Amazingly, sometimes people who know the most about the doctrines of grace are the least gracious; they’re ungracious. And I want to be more like Jesus. I so want to be more and more gracious. If I’ve experienced grace, I want to show it.
One of the most Christlike things I can do is remain silent in the face of criticism. Scripture says, when they falsely accused Christ of all kinds of stuff, He spoke not a word unto them. He refused to defend Himself. It’s Christlike to not defend yourself. It’s Christlike to not retaliate. It’s Christlike to return good for evil. When you try to do a middle road, then you get shot at by both sides. When you are friends of both liberals and conservatives, the Democrats and the Republicans, and you try to build bridges to Catholics and Charismatics and Calvinists and fundamentalists and everybody all at the same time—you’re trying to treat everybody with love—people in different groups are not going to like that. At one point I wondered, "Lord, how come I get so much criticism?" Then when I got on social media, I discovered something:
It’s the number one fear of pastors—the fear of criticism. And it's their number one pain.
I thought, "Well, OK. If God will allow me to take on maybe a little bit more criticism than others, then I can learn how to deal with it and I can help these guys." So it’s about redemptive criticism. In other words, bring it on, because I’ve been writing it down. Someday I’ll write a book on 500 Things I’ve Learned About Dealing With Criticism. One of those little books with one sentence on each page [laughter]—because the only way you learn redemptive criticism is to just get in the middle of it.

Insecticide in oil made Bihar’s mid day meal toxic Patna, July 20 (IanS): Cooking oil with strains of toxic insecticide compound organophosphorus was used for making food at a Bihar primary school where 23 children died after a free meal, police said Saturday, citing a forensic report. “The Forensic Science Laboratory report has found organophosphorus in oil samples collected from the school where the mid-day meal was prepared and consumed by the children in Saran district. The compound is used in farm insecticides,” Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Ravinder Kumar told reporters here. Ravinder Kumar said strains of Monocrotophos, an organophosphate insecticide, were present in the food. “It is highly toxic.” “It was also observed by the scientists of the FSL
that the poisonous substance in oil samples was more than five times the commercial preparation available in the market,” he said. The official said the forensic evidence collected from the school was analysed at FSL here. He said that it was a matter of investigation that how and from where this poisonous substance got mixed in the oil. “I will not go into the details as FSL report will help the ongoing investigation into the mid day meal tragedy,” he said. According to a Saran district official, the forensic experts collected samples of the oil used to cook the meal late Tuesday night. “The oil samples had a bad odour,” officials said. Amarjeet Sinha, principal secretary, education, earlier said preliminary findings pointed to insecticide poisoning of the oil

Soft spoken Ramesh, 52, a practicing chartered accountant, was killed near his office in Salem at around 10 p.m. by a four member gang. Condemning the killing, BJP state leader Pon Radhakrishnan told IANS: “The party has called for a state wide general strike Monday. Ramesh was a patriot and did not have any professional enemies. He is the fourth Hindu leader to be killed within a year.” He demanded a detailed probe into the murder by a retired judge. Radhakrishnan said Ramesh had escaped an earlier attack on his life and his car was burnt. “There is a concerted attack on Hindu leaders in the state and the government is not taking

Pune, July20 (IanS): Bollywood actor and prisoner of Yerawada Central Jail Sanjay Dutt emerged from prison for the first time in more than two months for a visit to a hospital, official sources said on Saturday. Dutt was taken under tight security to the Sassoon Hospital, where he underwent a full general medical check-up by a team of four doctors. Unofficial reports claimed that Dutt had been ailing, but jail authorities and hospital officials remained tight-lipped about
the details of the actor’s medical check-up, which lasted around three hours. Dutt returned to prison after the hospital visit. This was the first time Dutt was emerging from the famous Yerawada Central Jail in over two months after his surrender before a Mumbai Special Court May 16 to serve the remainder of his sentence after his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. On May 22, he was shifted out of Mumbai’s Arthur Road Central Jail and whisked off to Yerawada Central Jail to serve the sen-
tence that remained. mDuring his hearing before the Special TADA Court, Dutt had sought home-cooked food, medicines and other facilities, which he was permitted for a month. However, the Yerawada jail authorities objected to these privileges, citing the jail manual, since Dutt was serving time in prison as a convict, and was not an undertrial. Subsequently, Dutt was taught to make paper bags, a tedious indoor chore, that security personnel thought would be best for his safety. He is paid around Rs 25 each day for the bags.
bhubaneSwar, July 20 (tnn): Odisha government on Saturday ordered a high level inquiry into the deaths of nine infants in 24 hours at government-run VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla. “A twomember team will leave for Burla today (Saturday) to find out the cause of so many deaths and possible
remedial measures. They will submit a report to the government for further action,” said health secretary Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra. The government has asked director medical education and training Dr Sunamali Bag and director of Sishubhawan (paediatric hospital at Cuttack) Dr Niranjan Parida to probe the
did not know the meaning of democracy. Only 10% said it is about people’s rule, for 4% about parties and elections, for 5% about law & institutions and another 4% said it is about social justice and equality and for 9% about development & welfare. In fact, there has been discernible decline in perception of democracy since 2005. Around 41% said government should consider opinions of all ordinary citizens, 24% wanted government to consult local government and 19% said government can take decisions by itself. As for participation in political activities, major-
ity said they have never got together to raise an issue or seen a petition or attended a demonstration. It also comes out that the majority (54%) consider government as their employee and some (26%) look to it as their parent. The survey shows that government employees were most contacted to solve problems, even more than politicians. Most surprisingly more than half the people polled preferred government control over media. Representative democracy was again favoured (86%) in comparison to rule by experts, strong leader, military rule or rule
Indian women and children hold placards as they participate in a protest organized by non-governmental organization Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save Childhood Movement, against the death of schoolchildren after eating free midday meal served at a school, in New Delhi, India on July 20. Police said samples of cooking oil and leftover food taken from an Indian school where 23 children died after eating lunch this past week were contaminated with "very toxic" levels of an agricultural pesticide. and vegetables used in the meal. The post-mortem of the children confirmed presence of a poisonous substance in the potatosoyabean curry served to them .Soon after the deaths, a top government official said that he suspected it could be organophosphorous poisoning caused due to traces of insecticides in vegetables. He added that doctors had told him that atropine had a positive effect on the affected children. He also did not rule out contamination of the oil used to prepare the curry consumed by children Tuesday in the school in Gandaman village of the district, 80 km from Patna. Chandrasekhar Singh, a doctor in a government hospital in Saran, who treated several children said 10 kids, who did not eat the curry, are safe. “As many as
any serious action to put an end to this. Last month Hindu Munnani state secretary Vellaiayappan was murdered in the state,” Radhakrishnan added. He said there was no policeman at the murder spot when he visited it at around 4.30-5 a.m. Saturday. ,“The murder evidence could have been erased,” he remarked. K.T. Raghavan, a spokesperson of state BJP, said: “There seems to be a concerted targeting of second line leadership of Hindu organisations in the state.” ,“BJP’s medical wing secretary V. Aravind was killed in Vellore in 2012. Recently Hindu Munnani leader Vellaiappan was killed. The police seems to be having no clue about the killers,” Raghavan told IANS. Echoing him, Arjun Sampath of the Hindu Makkal Katchi told IANS: “There should be a CBI probe. Looking at the pattern of attacks it seems they are planned interstate. The attacks are targeted to create fear psychosis amongst the second rung leadership of Hindu organ-
isations.” Incidentally last month Sampath’s house in Coimbatore was attacked. According to him, Pughazendhi of Nagapattinam was killed around seven months back and many others like BJP’s M.R. Gandhi, Hindu Munnani activist Anand and others have been attacked. ,Sampath said the state should provide security or issue gun licence to Hindu leaders to protect themselves. Radhakrishnan said BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu will be going to Salem, about 335 km from here, to pay his respects.“Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, party leader Arun Jaitely and others spoke to me and asked about the details,” Radhakrishnan said. Condemning the attacks, BJP members staged protests at various places in the state. Ramesh was twice the general secretary of the Tamil Nadu BJP and was also a trustee at the Chennai Port Trust. ,He is survived by his wife Subha and daughter who studies in class 11.
mocracy has come down to 47% from 55% in the first SDSA in 2005. Even the percentage of people who were undecided (30%) has come down to 18% in the latest survey. Result of Indian survey was presented by political scientists Suhas Palshikar, Sanjay Kumar and Sandeep Shastri. Conducted over 22 states with a sample size of 5,465 and consisting of fair representation of all social categories, the highlight of the survey is that men are more satisfied with democracy and most importantly all minorities compared to majority prefer more democracy. Among the mi-
norities, 51% preferred democracy that found favour only among 43% of majority community. Among the minorities, 10% said under some circumstances an authoritarian government can be preferable to a democracy; 17% said it didn’t matter to them whether there is a democratic or a non-democratic government. In the majority community, 11% were in favour of an authoritarian government and 16% didn’t care. Interestingly, 30% of the majority community did not respond unlike only 22% of minorities. But the irony is that 54% of people surveyed
prevent violence. All major road intersections in Srinagar have been blocked with coils of razor wire, cross parking of security force vehicles and makeshift barricades. Srinagar district magistrate has said identity cards of those manning essential services and media would be treated as curfew passes by the security forces. An emergency control room has been set up to facilitate passage of patients to hospitals during emergencies. The strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway remained closed for the third consecutive day Saturday. Trouble erupted in Gool village in Ramban district Thursday when villagers, alleging desecration of a mosque and beating up of the local imam by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, stormed a BSF camp. BSF Inspector General (Frontier Jammu) Rajeev Krishna told reporters the BSF guards at the camp had
opened fire to prevent looting of arms and ammunition. Locals have dismissed the BSF explanation as ‘fabrication’ saying that the troopers had opened fire at peaceful protesters. Four villagers were killed in the firing while 43 were wounded. The state government has shifted the BSF camp from Dharam (Gool) village and the camp has been taken over by personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police. An ex-gratia of Rs.5 lakhs and a government job to the next of kin of each of the deceased was announced by the state cabinet. The cabinet expressed shock and condemned “the use of excessive force by security forces in Gool incident”. No Amarnath-bound pilgrim was allowed to leave winter capital Jammu for the second day Saturday as tensions along the over 300 km Jammu-Srinagar highway continued in Batote, Chanderkote, Ramban and Bannihal towns.

matter. “We will leave for Burla sometime later in the day and assess the situation there,” Bag said. Reports said nine children admitted in sick neonatal intensive care unit (SNCU) in the hospital in Sambalpur district, around 300 km from Bhubaneswar, died on Thursday and Friday.
Faith in democracy fell to 47% from 55% in 8 years, report says by a religious leader. However, in the last survey support for representative democracy was 94%. Call it a reflection of changing character of politics, preference for strong leader, military rule (39% from 24% in 2005) and even religious leader has gone up. Among those who supported rule by religious leader, 32% are non-literate, minorities (30%), majority (26%), youth (26%) and only 19% highly educated. But preference for military rule is higher among the majority community (42%), nonliterate (43%), highly educated (36%) and minority (32%).
Second day of curfew in Kashmir Valley
An Indian paramilitary soldier stands guard during curfew in Srinagar, India on July 20. A strict curfew continues for the second day in most of Indian-controlled Kashmir on Saturday, with thousands of troops fanning out across the region. The curfew was imposed a day after government forces on Thursday fatally shot four villagers. (AP Photo)
All examinations scheduled for Saturday have been cancelled by Kashmir University, Central University and the state board of
school education. Separatists have called for a three-day protest shutdown against the killings. All senior separatist
leaders, including Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, have been placed under house arrest in Srinagar.

Barcelona rubbish talks of Fabregas exit saying Fabregas would not leave Camp Nou at any cost, reports Xinhua. "We can assure you that we won't listen to any offers for Cesc. It is not an option. Cesc is non-transferable," Barcelona vice president Josep Maria Bartome said Friday. The 26-year-old, who spent eight years at Arsenal, was signed for 34
million euros by Barcelona in 2011. The Spanish international has continuously reiterated his stand to stay with his boyhood club and Barcelona has finally quelled talk of an exit. Manchester United had earlier missed out on Spain U-21 captain Thiago Alcantara, who decided to join former manager Pep Guardiola at
the two heated rivals. The 44-year-old Vilanova had twice previously been obliged to take a medical break from his duties at Barcelona, once as Pep Guardiola's assistant in the 2011-12 season and again as its manager last season. The quiet-spoken coach had battled the recurrent tumor in a saliva gland and had returned to work on both occasions. As recently as April, Vilanova said that he felt fine and "had never thought about quitting" the job of coach that he called "his life." But at that point his doctors had encouraged him to continue working. Now, that has apparently changed. "This is a piece of news I would have never in my life wanted to give," Rosell told a packed media room including Barcelona's first team with Messi and captain Carles Puyol.

Narain Karthikeyan relishing winning ways fourth round at Silverstone in June. He won a race that weekend and repeated the feat in Race 2 at Mugello besides finishing third in the opening outing. However, he inherited victories from Kevin Giovesi in both cases. “With the result last week, I think I can have a shot at the title. The car is good and with the way things are going, I am confident of chasing the leaders in the final three rounds,” said Karthikeyan, who lies fourth in the standings with 96 points, 42 short of topper Sergio Campana. Another reason why Karthikeyan is eying the Auto GP title is that he plans to move to United States next season for a stint with IndyCar. Looking back, Karthikeyan says it was tough for him to continue in single seaters after his team for two F1 seasons, HRT, decided to close operations. “Initially there was a lot of uncertainty which wasn’t good for morale and focus to be honest. When you have a clear goal and plan ahead, you tend to prepare yourself to work towards it," said the 36-year-old.

CoIMbAtoRE, JULY 20 (IANS): India’s first Formula 1 driver Narain Karthikeyan had been left in a blind alley by HRT when it shut shop after the 2012 season and finding that he could not land a drive in 2013, he soon found his way into Auto GP. Lo and behold, he is now in with a chance of grabbing the title after his double podium finish at Mugello, Italy, last week. Though the Auto GP series (formerly known as Euroseries 3000) is nowhere near F1, Karthikeyan is enjoying competing against a mix of young and experienced drivers, including former Grand Prix driver Christian Klien. “There is no comparison with F1 car or driving but I am happy racing in Auto GP. There is no better feeling for a driver than winning a race. It is nice to be beating some of the young guys and unlike F1, everyone has the same car, a kind of level-playing field and thus the results are all the more satisfying,” Karthikeyan told IANS. Karthikeyan's pace has been impressive ever since he moved to Super Nova from Zele before the

Vilanova steps down as Barca coach Open summer football challenge concludes
bARCELoNA, JULY 20 (AP): Tito Vilanova is stepping down as Barcelona's coach following a recurrence of throat cancer, just a month before Lionel Messi and his teammates begin the defense of their Spanish league title. Club president Sandro Rosell told a hurriedly called news conference at Barcelona's training facility on Friday that Vilanova will "follow a treatment" that will be "incompatible" with staying on as coach. Rosell said that a new head coach would be named next week and that Barcelona was canceling its first friendly of the preseason, scheduled to be played in Poland on Saturday against Lechia Gdansk. Spanish media was rife with speculation that little-known Joan "Rubi" Ferrer would replace Vilanova. Ferrer was hired on June

‘Trayvon Martin could have been Myanmar lifts order me, 35 years ago’ emergency in riot-hit areas
President Barack Obama pauses as he speaks during the daily news briefing at the White House on July 19, in Washington, about the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman. (AP Photo) WASHINGTON, July 20 (AFP): President Barack Obama offered a very personal take on the death of Trayvon Martin, saying that 35 years ago, he could have been the unarmed black teen shot dead by a neighborhood watchman. In a surprise appearance before reporters, Obama hailed the “incredible grace and dignity” of Martin’s parents and warned that a resort to violence in the wake of the Florida court verdict would “dishonor” his death. He also called for a review of controversial “stand your ground” laws like the one in place in Florida, which assert that citizens
can use lethal force -- rather than retreat -- if they sense their lives are at risk. “When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son,” Obama said, in his first substantive comments on a verdict that has aroused an impassioned debate on US race relations. “Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.” While he refrained from direct comment on the jury’s decision to acquit neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman on Saturday, Obama weighed in on the larger issues of race raised by the case.
“I just ask people to consider if Trayvon Martin was of age and armed, could he have stood his ground on that sidewalk?” Obama asked. “And do we actually think that he would have been justified in shooting Mr. Zimmerman who had followed him in a car because he felt threatened? “And if the answer to that question is at least ambiguous, then it seems to me that we might want to examine those kinds of laws,” he said. The teen’s parents Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton said they were “deeply honored and moved” by Obama’s comments. “President Obama sees himself in Trayvon and identifies with him. This is a beautiful tribute to our boy,” they said in a statement. “We seek a future when a child can walk down the street and not worry that others see him as dangerous because of the color of his skin or the clothes on his back.” Civil rights rallies were scheduled in cities across the country on Saturday in the wake of the Zimmerman verdict, with Fulton due to appear in New York and Tracy Martin expected to speak in Miami. In Congress, meanwhile, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said he would hold hearings on the US gun lobby’s role in promoting “stand your ground” laws in 30 US states. Martin, 17, was fatally shot on the rainy night of February 26, 2012 during an altercation with the 29-year-old Zimmerman in a gated community in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman said he acted in self-defense and his team did not specifically invoke the
“stand your ground” law in its arguments. A jury of six women, all but one white, cleared him of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. Critics of Saturday’s verdict argue that Zimmerman racially profiled the youth -- who had no criminal record -- and was able to kill him with impunity because of a biased criminal justice system. But Zimmerman -- who has a white father and a Peruvian mother -- has insisted race was not a factor in the incident. Obama urged better training of law enforcement at the state and local levels “to reduce the kind of mistrust in the system that sometimes currently exists.” He said young African American males needed greater encouragement in the face of negative stereotypes that many blacks believe were at the root of the shooting death. “There are very few African American men in this country who haven’t had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store. That includes me,” he said. “There are very few African American men who haven’t had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. “That happens to me -- at least before I was a senator.” “And I don’t want to exaggerate this, but those sets of experiences inform how the African American community interprets what happened one night in Florida,” he said. Calling for “some soul searching” on race, Obama urged that it be pursued in families, churches and workplaces rather than by politicians.
Cooler bag to keep food chilled for five days
HelSINkI, July 20 (IANS): Taking food to festivals or on holiday even during the hottest of days will soon be easier, as a new nonelectric cooler bag designed by a Finnish firm can keep food chilled for at least 4-5 days. The innovation dubbed “super cooler bag” has been designed by the Icebridge Oy company based in Tuusula, near Helsinki, news website goodnewsfinland.com reported. Company CEO Jukka Hämäläinen said a “nonelectric cooling system” developed by the
company can be used in many different applications, such as in cooler bags. “In practice, the basic product is ready but the product for the consumer market is still undergoing a few adjustments. We aim to complete the development work by the end of the year,” the official said. The most noticeable benefit of the “super cooler bag” over traditional cooler bags is its long-lasting and reliable temperature control. The product is designed for condi-
tions in which electric or otherwise-powered refrigeration space is not available or is insufficient. “Our product is especially suited for travel, long hiking trips, staying at the summer cottage, sailing excursions and other kinds of events such as festivals,” said Hämäläinen. He said the largest markets for the bag will be in the Middle East and in North America. Icebridge’s flagship product is a non-electric refrigeration system for airline catering. It is
based on patented technology developed by inventor Jarmo Aurekoski. The system cools the serving trolley evenly and for a sustained period, meaning that food can be kept cool for up to 23 hours. The CEO said that 10 airlines have been using Icebridge products. Dutch airline KLM has been flying with Icebridge coolers for over a year. The company has calculated that the product has helped save 1.2 million euros per year, he said.

yANGON, July 20 (AP): Myanmar’s president on Saturday lifted a state of emergency in the central part of the country put in place after Buddhist-led mobs went on a rampage, killing dozens of Muslims and burning down their shops and homes. Many of the victims were teachers and teenage students from an Islamic school. The decision to lift the emergency order in the battle-scarred townships of Meikhtila, Mahlaing, Wundwin and Thazi several months ahead of schedule was an indication that “peace and stability” have been restored, said the state-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper. The move came as President Thein Sein was wrapping up a European tour that was aimed in part at cleaning up the image of a country wracked by religious violence. Thein Sein told France 24 TV that allegations of “ethnic cleansing” in the state of Rakhine were not true and were part of a “smear campaign” by outsiders. The unrest in Meikhtila was sparked by a quarrel at a Muslim-owned gold shop on March 20, but escalated after a group of Muslim men pulled a monk off his motorcycle and burned him to death. Enraged, Buddhist-led mobs destroyed 12 of the city’s 13 mosques and burned down hundreds of homes before marching to a prestigious Islamic school, where they killed 36 teachers and students as police and local officials looked on. The violence which left a total of 44 people dead went unchecked until a state of emergency was declared March 22. It imposed a 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew and barred assembly of more than five people. It also allowed local authorities to seek military assistance to help bring the situation under control. “Lifting the emergency order is an important step, but the critical question is what is the government’s plan to foster reconciliation between Buddhist and Muslim communities in these areas,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for New York-based Human Rights Watch, noting that 7,000 displaced people are still afraid to return to their homes to start rebuilding their lives. “Just hoping for the best is not much of a plan,” he said. Myanmar only recently emerged from a half-century of isolation and brutal military rule. The struggle to contain tensions between the country’s Muslim and Buddhist communities which has killed more than 250 people in the last year is proving another major challenge for Thein Sein’s reformist administration as it attempts to chart a path to democracy. Human Rights Watch accused the government in an April report of an “ethnic cleansing” campaign. It said officials, community leaders and Buddhist monks organized and encouraged mobs to target the minority group, sometimes with the backing of security forces. Robertson stood by the report’s findings Saturday, and disputed Thein Sein’s allegations of a smear campaign against the government.

Danielle Steel heads inside the fashion world
C M Y K
T
he fashion world is the setting for the latest book by bestselling novelist Danielle Steel, a prolific author who continues to produce several books a year. “First Sight”, which appeared in mid-July, is the story of Timmie O’Neill who has created a ready-to-wear fashion empire after a difficult childhood and a past she wants to forget. Steel, 65, who has written nearly 100 adult novels and a number of children’s books, spoke to Reuters about the book, her career and how she managed to write while raising nine children:
of reasons. Family units are more unusual with a wide variety of options. It is common for single people to adopt children now and raise them on their own, or have children out of wedlock, which wasn’t nearly as common or acceptable 20 years ago. And women are under enormous pressure now, with big jobs and enormous stress they didn’t have 20 or 30 years ago. These are challenging times, in many ways, for families, men and women, and individuals, in a far more uncertain world.
C M Y K
Q: How have you changed as a writer? A: Life teaches all of us new views and perspectives, if we are willing to learn the lessons life doles out to us. My approach to writing is still the same: put bottom in chair, and keep it there for 20 or 22 hours straight, and keep at it until you drop, to get the best out of oneself, and get the story and all its nuances on the page. I have always worked very hard, and still do, perhaps harder as I strive to get better and write better with each book. Fortunately the challenge of telling the story, and doing the very best I can, is still fun to me.
Q: What was the inspiration for “First Sight”? A: I’m always looking to write about different things. I had never written in depth about a woman involved with a married man so that started the idea and then I got interested in writing about the challenges of working in the ready-to-wear fashion industry. I particularly like writing about people who overcome difficulties or tragedies and turn their lives around. After a terrible childhood, Timmie O”Neill makes something wonderful of her life. All of that appealed to me and it inspires people to think that others can do that. Q: What appealed to you about Timmie? A: What interested me about Timmie was her overcoming a painful childhood and tragedy as an adult and, in spite of that, she creates a remarkable life for herself. One can’t help but admire that.
Q: You’ve been quite prolific. How did you manage to accomplish so much? A: I don’t sleep a lot and never did. Fortunately I don’t need a lot of sleep or I could never have had nine children and written as many books. I’m also willing to sacrifice my personal time for my children and my work. I rarely, if ever, have lunch with friends and don’t go out socially when I can be with my kids or am writing.
Q: How have your characters evolved to match the times? Would somebody like Timmie have been accepted at the start of your career? A: Somebody like Timmie would undoubtedly have captivated readers at the start of my career, but when I first published at 19, I wouldn’t have had the insight to write about her and understand her motivations well myself. My books have moved forward with the times in that relationships are different now, and some of the challenges people face are different in a world of more liberated women, relationships harder to find - as witnessed by the proliferation of computer dating - and harder to maintain for a multitude
Q: Advice for aspiring writers? A: My best advice for young writers, or anyone in any field, or just in life, is perseverance. Keep at what you’re doing, try not to get discouraged, keep going no matter what. I always remind young writers that my first book got published fairly easily but no one bought the next five books I wrote. I kept writing, and from my seventh book on, the books started to sell, slowly at first, but with a forward momentum. If you really want to be a writer, you have to harden yourself to rejection, keep trying to improve, learn your craft, and keep writing. As in anything, persistence wins the prize.

Hong Kong honors kung fu star Bruce Lee
C M Y K
HONG kONG, July 20 (AFP): Hailed as cinema’s first martial arts hero and a cinematic bridge between the cultures of East and West, Bruce Lee helped put Hong Kong on the movie world map. So why are some in the city marking the 40th anniversary of his death in a toilet? “In 1958, Bruce Lee was a student at St Francis Xavier’s [College],” Wong Yiu-keung, chairman of the Bruce Lee Club, explains. “One day, he was caught in a fight in a washroom by one of the fathers. “But the priest also boxed back in his home country. So, he didn’t punish him. Instead, he invited him to the boxing classes. Lee later participated in an interschool competition and won.” The incident was significant in Lee, who died from swelling of the brain aged just 32, deciding to tunnel his love of martial arts into something positive. A short time afterwards he opened a martial arts school in the United States, where he was born. Fans of Lee will visit his Hong Kong alma mater this weekend as one of several stops on an unofficial “Bruce Lee trail” in the former British colony, where the star spent his childhood. Other points on the walk include Lee’s statue on the Avenue of the Stars and the Bruce Lee Club house, both in the Tsim Sha Tsui neighbourhood of the southern Chinese
city, which is without a permanent museum dedicated to the screen legend. Fans will also take in a monastery in the New Territories which featured in perhaps his most famous movie, “Enter the Dragon”. A five-year exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, featuring memorabilia from his life and films including his iconic yellow jumpsuit, was due to be opened Saturday by his daughter Shannon Lee. “The way I know my father is not through media. The way I know my father is in number of different ways,” Lee, who was four when her father died, said Friday.“It’s through the people who knew him well, his friends, my family. It’s also through his own words, because he wrote voluminously. “I have all of his library books, thousands of books and he would underline in them and write notes in the margins, so I know him from him.” Some of those notebooks, poetry, and family photos are among 600 items showcased at the museum until 2018. A 20th century cultural icon who founded Jeet Kune Do, Lee’s untimely death in Hong Kong in 1973 left fans around the world reeling. “I remember the funeral in Hong Kong
primarily, because it was were so many people,” “It was hot, humid, and like this whirlwind. And going on and so much a little kid, I just sort of being dragged through whole process and the ing of the chaos all around me.” Lee’s legacy lived on, inspiring a new gen-
just so chaotic. There his daughter said. it was just sort of there was so much sadness and as remember t h a t feel-
eration of actors such as Jackie Chan and breaking down barriers for Asian actors in Hollywood. “He won his fame from Kung Fu, which does not need language to deliver,” Lee’s biographer Roger Lo said. “Just like dance and music. You can watch it whoever you are. It is like Charlie Chaplin whose silent movies were borderless. “Lee was also a bridge between the cultures of East and West. He was educated both in Hong Kong and the United States. “He appeared on American televisions and also Chinese movie theatres,” he added. Chaplin Chang, the author of a new biography “The Bruce Lee They Knew” published this month, says that Lee’s real life personality, not just screen persona, are part of his enduring appeal. “People may give him god-like status. But he is just a human.” Chang, in the Chinese-language version of his biography, attempts to portray the action hero from an unconventional perspective, showing that the screen icon could be difficult at times but was generally friendly towards his subordinates. “He was not only (about) movies, nor was he only (about) martial arts. With his philosophy, his legacy lives on for generations. Therefore, he is admired by many even now,” Chang said.

JSW sign India team captain Sunil Chhetri BaNgalore, July 20 (iaNs): India football captain Sunil Chhetri Friday signed for I-League's new entrants JSW, the Bangslore-based club that is set to be launched Saturday. Chhetri's signing for JSW ends weeks of speculation about the striker's future. "I met the people at JSW a few months ago and the first thing that struck me was the passion behind all the planning. I want to play for a club that's clear about its vision and I saw that in JSW. I know I am coming from a champion team but that works as more motivation here," said Chhetri. Chhetri had signed for Sporting Clube de Portugal B last season before he came on loan to Churchill Brothers towards the fag end of the I-League. On his decision of signing for a club that will be making its ILeague debut this season, he said he didn't need any prodding. "Choosing JSW wasn't really tough because the people seemed genuine. We need to think long term. We are a young team and we wouldn't want to harbor high hopes. I'm not setting any targets but I'm sure we can achieve a lot of things if we stick together," he said. Parth Jindal, CEO of the club said they are delighted with the latest signing. "For someone of Sunil Chhetri's caliber to join JSW says a lot about the club. Signing the national team captain is the best possible statement of where we want to take this club. We are very happy to have Sunil on board," he said. With the team being a young one, Chhetri realizes that his responsibilities will double. But it's a task the diminutive marksman says he will relish. "I'm used to taking burdens and I'm going to give everything I am capable of, to this club. We're going to need everyone - right from the ball boy to the owners - to be behind us at all times and I am sure we can repay their faith," he said. Chhetri is the second national team player that JSW have signed after fellow-striker Robin Singh agreed a deal with the club last week
Federer loses to qualifier in Hamburg semis HaMBurg, July 20 (aP): In a further sign of his decline, Roger Federer lost to Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4) in the semifinals of the German Tennis Championships on Saturday. Federer, a four-time champion in Hamburg, was outplayed by the No. 114-ranked left-hander who advanced to his first career final. Federer took a wild card for Hamburg after losing in the second round at Wimbledon. The 31-yearold Swiss ace has dropped to No. 5, his lowest ranking in a decade. He has won one title this year, on grass in Halle, Germany, before Wimbledon. Federer lost to No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky — a player who failed to qualify for Hamburg — as the defending Wimbledon champion. It was his earliest Grand Slam defeat in 10

years, and his first loss to a player ranked outside the top 100 since 2005. Federer changed his racket after Wimbledon, going for a bigger frame. But he struggled in Hamburg, going to three sets in two of his previous three matches. Delbonis will play Fabio Fognini of Italy, who moved within one win of his second title in two weeks when he beat third-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (1). Delbonis was playing only the second semifinal of his career but maintained his composure and gave Federer, the 17-time Grand Slam champ, only two break points, one of which he saved. Fognini won his first career title in Stuttgart last week and is riding a nine-match winning streak. It was the Italian's 24th win on clay this season. Fognini is the second Italian to reach the final in Hamburg after Adriano Panatta lost to Manuel Orantes in 1972. Almagro is second in career clay-court titles among active players with 12. Rafael Nadal has 42.
Windies tie dramatic 3rd ODI with Pakistan
Castries, July 20 (iaNs): West Indies pulled off a tie from the brink of defeat in a thrilling finish to their third One-Day International (ODI) against Pakistan at the Beausejour Stadium here. Chasing 230, after Pakistan posted 229/6 off their 50 overs, the West Indies scored 229/9 from their quota of 50 overs Friday, reports CMC. Fast bowler Jason Holder, at 21 the youngest member of the West Indies team, held his nerve in the last over when the hosts required 15 runs. In an eventful last-wicket partnership with fellow Barbadian Kemar Roach, they took 14 runs off the decisive over, bowled by Wahab Riaz, as Holder lashed a four off the third ball and a mas-
sive six over extra cover off the fifth. The equation was then three runs off the final ball before Holder edged to third man and collected two which tied the scores. Holder seemed to be short of his ground on the second run as the throw came back to Pakistani wicketkeeper Umar Akmal, who failed to collect the ball. That secured an unlikely result for the West Indies, who struggled against tight bowling from the Pakistani spin and pace attack before and after a crucial fourth-wicket partnership between Marlon Samuels and Lendl Simmons. Paceman Mohhamad Irfan tilted the match in favour of the visitors when he broke the critical partnership (91 runs off 22 overs) between
Simmons (75) and Samuels (46). He had Samuels caught behind edging a lifting ball with the score on 141 in the 39th over. Then Saeed Ajmal accounted for Simmons, caught at deep midwicket by Shehzad. With the score on 178/5, Pakistan continued to collect wickets and control the game. The hosts went into the last 10 overs with the score on 144/4, needing 85 off 60 balls but were in deep trouble as captain Dwayne Bravo, Keiron Pollard and Darren Sammy got out cheaply in a space of eight balls. Spinner Sunil Narine gave the home team a glimmer of hope with a fiery 14 off five balls but once it was left to the last pair, Pakistan fancied their chances of moving ahead 2-1 in the series.
