ASTD resolves to stand by NFHRCC DIMAPUR , JUNE 21 (MExN): Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) has resolved to stand by the Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC). Following the NFHRCC serving an ultimatum to the Road & Bridges Minister on June 18 with regard to allotment of work contract, the ASTD held a meeting on June 21 wherein it resolved to “stand by the ultimatum given by the NFHRCC both in letter and spirit,” stated the ASTD president Supu Jamir. The ASTD further resolved to “summon the contractor to whom the work has been allotted (by the PWD, R & B) through the NIT in respect of the Ao sector in order to amicably settle within the four walls of the Ao family,” stated Jamir. Furthermore, the ASTD informed all its affiliate units in Dimapur to convene within two days “in view of the ultimatum issued by the NFHRCC” and discuss follow up action in the event the Government fails to respond to the NFHRCC ultimatum. Along with the ASTD, the Dimapur units of the Konyak, Chang, Khiamniungan and Yimchunger unions, and the Western Sumi Hoho, had separate meetings on Saturday. It was learnt that all the five tribe forums resolved to support and stand by the NFHRCC ultimatum. The rest of the tribe units in Dimapur, which are propping up the NFHRCC, are likely to decide by Monday. The NFHRCC will meet on June 22 at 1pm at its treasurer’s residence.

Oil Spills Compensation: $50 million rejected
lAGOS, JUNE 21 (AP): Thousands of Nigerian fishermen have rejected an offer of $50 million from Royal Dutch Shell for “some of the largest oil spills in history,” their British lawyers said Friday after winning a landmark court ruling. Shell already accepts responsibility for paying compensation and cleaning up spills caused by its own failures. But the London High Court decided that Shell can be held legally liable for spills caused by oil thefts, if it fails to provide reasonable protection for
its pipeline infrastructure. The court case involves one of Nigeria’s worst environmental disasters. Amnesty International called it “a shot across the bows for Shell” and said the ruling “paves the way for Shell to finally be held accountable for devastating oil pollution in the Niger Delta.” Shell played down the judgment, saying in a statement that it was favorable in limiting litigation to “an assessment of actual damages sustained” in spills. The oil company, Nigeria’s biggest petroleum produc-
er, claimed that the court found Nigerian law “does not hold pipeline operators responsible for damage caused by oil theft.” But Judge Robert Akenhead of the London Technological and Construction Court ruled Shell is responsible for taking reasonable steps to protect its infrastructure, including installing leak detection systems, surveillance equipment and antitamper equipment. Shell does not have such equipment in its Nigerian fields, though they are considered mandatory
in oilfields in the developed world. Mutiu Sunmonu, managing director of Shell Nigeria, said the company has accepted responsibility for the “deeply regrettable” spills and urged the fishermen to accept Shell’s “sensible and fair compensation offers.” Amnesty International has accused Shell of manipulating oil spill investigations and wrongly reporting the cause and volume of oil spills devastating the Niger Delta, and of making false claims about cleanup measures.
DIMAPUR, JUNE 21 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) stated today that the BJP government, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have “repeatedly exposed” their “hidden divisive agenda”; and that through an absolute majority in the parliament, the BJP feels that it can go ahead with it. The NPCC warned that unless the people rise and raise their voices against actions of the BJP government which are “remote controlled by divisive and communal forces,” the country is headed for harder times. In a press note released by its media cell, the NPCC stated that the BJP government started its tenure with “bending the rules” to appoint former TRAI Chairman Nripendra Misra as the PMs Principal Secretary which, the NPCC felt, was uncalled for. “Hardly has the dust settled after swearing in ceremony, the very next day MoS in PMO Jitendra Singh raked up the debate for abrogation of Article 370 in J&K. This could not have taken place without the tacit blessing of the PM,” it was stated. “In a move to further consolidate his stronghold on power and exposing his disdain for group based decisions, the PM has
scrapped all the EGOMs (Empowered Group of Ministers) and GOMs (Group of Ministers) in the guise of faster decision making. These EGoMs and GoMs were not the UPAs legacy but was carried over from the BJP led NDA days.” According to the NPCC, the BJP government, “in a bid to silence the dissent-
of the party” is “unprecedented and smacks of totalitarian mindset evolved by the BJP and Modi.” It reminded that inflation continues to spiral upwards without any signs of slowdown and the 14.2% hike in rail fares without even waiting for the budget session shows that “the BJP has no formula to improve the economic conditions despite their rhetoric’s during election campaign.” “ The dual charge of Finance and Defence Ministries entrusted to Arun Jaitely shows that the BJP is short on talent to man the crucial ministries and also their concern especially towards the Defence sector being addressed with adhocism,” the NPCC noted. Hitting out at the imposition of Hindi in all official correspondence and on social media, the NPCC called this “diktat” of the Union Home Ministry an “attempt to impose their divisive theory of ‘one nation one language one culture’.” “Today it’s the language, but tomorrow it will be an imposition of Hindutva culture in the name of nationalism. In a country where 59% of the populations have their own mother tongue other than Hindi and with 22 different languages listed in VIII Schedule of the Constitution, the imposition of Hindi will open a Pandora box,” it was stated.
Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee hits out at BJP government’s decisions ing voices,” “conveniently used” the IB report that indicts the NGOs for acting at the behest of western powers to scuttle the country’s economic security. “This move is a dangerous trend since the corporate funded BJP govt sees these NGOs as obstacles to fast track developmental works, as their activism especially to protect large scale exploitation of resources by corporate houses at the expense of common people needs to be curbed or silenced,” it maintained. Moreover, the NPCC stated, purging UPA appointed Governors and other officials in various statutory bodies to “accommodate the saffron leaning individuals and old guards
Match vision with implementation: the day the music didn’t die! Dimapur celebrates World Music Day 2014 - See page 11 CM tells officers and politicians Our Correspondent Kohima | June 21
Nagaland State chief minister T.R. Zeliang today said that many visions have been announced by the central and state government but regretted that implementation on ground has not taken place as expected. He stated that implementation cannot take place unless and until the people come forward, and think seriously about the vision papers. Speaking at the felicitation programme organised by Zeliang Officers’ Association, Nagaland (ZOAN) in his honour at Hotel Vivor, Kohima, he recalled visions like Look East Policy, Vision 2020 for the North East region and the NDA-announced Vision 2025. The chief minister told the officers that one can bring out a vision within few months/ years but to implement it takes several years. He informed the senior officers that as long as they are in service they have the opportunity to serve the people, reminding them that “every day, every hour is important for all of us.” Zeliang informed that the central government has already approved the PerenMaram-Dimapur road as an alternative to National Highway- 39, for which survey work has started. He said the central government will sanction the amount, the concerned department will implement the same and finally the benefit will go to the people. “Nobody will take away our road to anywhere. It will remain with us.” Zeliang said the right over the land, the landowners and Article 371-A, should not obstruct infrastructure development. The chief minister said the “intellectual group”
needs to talk to village councils, tribe hohos and other organizations that for the development of roads, no village or no community should obstruct during alignment or at the time of implementation. He continued that if any kind of organization or village council is to think that “our land is ours” and will not allow development to take place and if that mindset continues in the mind of our people “we can never progress.” He also stressed on the need to have better coordination between officers and politicians for progress and development of the State. He urged upon the officers, as well as politicians, to have more concern for the people and come forward with suggestions, adding that frequency of interaction and interface would give better knowledge to carry out their duties and responsibilities. He asked the officers to give valuable suggestions which in turn can be tabled in the Assembly and he expressed desire to hold joint politicians-officers meeting at least once a year. Zeliang also said that being a minority tribe representative he was not expected to be the chief minister, however, with God’s blessing and support of other tribes he was able to occupy the chair. He added that things have settled down and are ready to move ahead for development. “God loves our people because firstly we are peace-loving people and secondly God has given a beautiful land to our people with high potential” said TR Zeliang. Earlier, N. Benjamin, secretary agriculture and parliamentary affairs spoke on behalf of ZOAN. ZOAN president Pausui Zeliang chaired the function while vote of thanks was proposed by Khamba Haralu.

NEw DElhI, JUNE 21 (IANS): “Music doesn’t lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.” This homily from the late psychedelic rock star Jimi Hendrix resonated on the 32nd World Music Day Saturday. World Music Day, also known as ‘Fete de la Musique’, is celebrated thoughout the world every year June 21. It originated in 1982 in France. The idea of an all-day musical celebration on the day of the summer solstice, was conceived by American musician Joel Cohen. It was later adapted as a national celebration in France. The idea was embraced and made official by the French ministry of culture in 1982. The festival soon gained widespread recognition as music is a medium that connects people of all cultures. In 2013, World Music Day was celebrated in 108 countries and 726 cities. The day is also celebrated with a lot of pomp and show in India. Restaurants and pubs around the national capital New Delhi celebrated music Saturday. At The Hard Rock Cafe at Saket’s DLF Place, to salute some of the most legendary rockers of all time, DJ Robbie planned to spin tracks by bands like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, The Doors and Metallica in keeping with its outlets around the world. Gurgaon is also marking event in The Joint - An Addiction in DLF Phase 4 with a hard rock band from Delhi called ‘Aanch’ playing live at the venue. “We play in The Joint - An
Addiction tonight and tomorrow we participate in a music competition held to celebrate the World Music Day. Our band Aanch is a group of six people and we all come from different backgrounds,” Aanch manager Ishan Akhtar told IANS. “Our band comprises architects and engineers and only the lead vocalist is a musician by profession. Music for us is a connection. Whenever we get the time for an open session, it is our way to reconnect with nature through music.” Neel Adhikari, singersongwriter for Kolkatabased bands Neel and the Lightbulbs and Gandu Circus, feels very special about this day as it connects both music and love for him.
“World Music Day was started by the French. June 21 will always be a special day not only because of the music but this is the day my wife first came to Kolkata,” Neel said. “Since she is also French, I helped her organise music day events in the city. I celebrate this day every year by performing in events and gigs and openmic sessions,” he said. According to Shankar Sharma, vocalist for Delhi-based band Matchstyx, “music to me is very personal and powerful”. “Its stimulates my mind and makes me feel all those emotions that make us human. I think in today’s world, music is the only medium which can lift people up from their robotic lives and ask them to live life again,” Sharma said.

Music and food at “The Garden”
diMapuR, June 21 (Mexn): Coinciding with the celebration of music, “The Garden”- the newest addition to Dimapur’s fast food chain of restaurants would open officially and host the World Music Day under the theme “Noonlight Garden” at Super Market on June 21. When two young brains influenced by environment and hygiene got together to make a difference, there got to be more than meets the eye. The Garden, located in Super Market area is a cozy fast food restaurant which has been transformed out of an unmaintained park. Restaurateur, Akihito, also the front man of UDX band said the concept was to design a comfortable relaxing yet decent outdoor restaurant where people would hang out because so far, Dimapur has no outdoor place where one can sit, relax and eat good food. The Garden, designed by Akihito and Katrin is not cheesy. If anything, it is eco friendly and alcohol free, so much so that one would want to keep returning to it. At The

Garden, diners would sit at communal wooden tables which give the place a cozy yet friendly feel. As one enters The Garden, many people will not miss the cute tree house painted in pink and black. The reclining wooden chairs and tables, stone -slaps on the floor, plenty of green leafy flowers and colorful flowers contribute to the eco friendly environment of The Garden. Super Market area, be-
ing one of the busiest commercial localities in the town is unbearably polluted, unhygienic and yearns for a breathing space. The serious challenge here appears to be maintenance of the locality. Aki and Katrin said they specifically wanted that location to start off the business to encourage people living in the surrounding to keep their environment clean, green and healthy. The Garden is not the only innovation. The
young team says they have plans to offer food donation to the homeless on certain days in the near future. They have also introduced the “sustained meal” concept, where a customer may pay in advance for a meal that is provided to someone who cannot afford it. The extra meal that the people purchase is suspended, that is, the restaurant will mark down the sum of money and ‘suspend’ the additional meal for the poor.

difference between words ‘Mizoram belongs to the Mizos only’ Vast and work of BJP: Tarun Gogoi Newmai News Network Aizawl | June 21 The Mizoram government has beefed up security with four days left for Mizo students to enter the Chakma dominated area of Borapansury in Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram to construct a rest house there, much to the opposition of the Chakma tribe. Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the largest students' body in Mizoram, is determined to construct a rest house, called Zofate in the local dialect, at Borapansury in CADC from June 25, in order to send a strong message to the Chakma community in Mizoram that the latter community is not an indigenous tribe of the
State. The MZP said the rapid growth of Chakma population in Mizoram is a threat to the existence of indigenous Mizos. Amid this volatile situation, the Zoram National Party (ZNP) said in the event of violence breaking out between the Chakmas and the Mizos during the construction of the Zofate, the Chakmas should be held responsible. Earlier, the Mizoram Chakma Development Forum (MCDF) accused MZP of grabbing the land of the Chakmas. The MCDF also accused the ZNP of manufacturing concocted stories on Chakma population in Mizoram. "As per the record of first Mizoram general census, the population of
Northeast Briefs Assam opposes visa-free entry to select Bangladeshis again Guwahati, June 21 (Pti): The Assam government has rejected a revised proposal by the Centre for relaxation of visa norms giving free entry to Bangladeshi citizens below 10 years and above 70 years into India. The earlier proposal sent to the state suggested visa-free entry should be given to Bangladeshi nationals below 18 years and above 65 years of age. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday told a press conference here that the state government had received a communication on 19 June from the ministry of external affairs seeking its opinion about the proposal and a second revised proposal was sent after the first one was turned down. “We have rejected this proposal and informed the Centre accordingly. We are opposed to visa-free entry to any national from Bangladesh irrespective of age,” Gogoi said. “This is not visa-on-arrival. We do not have any issue on that as we already have such facility with many countries. The UPA government had proposed visa-onarrival with Bangladesh, but the latest proposal from the NDA government is for visa-free entry to a select group of Bangladeshi nationals,” Gogoi said. The Centre, he said, had sent the proposals, which were aimed at improving relations with Bangladesh. External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj will visit Bangladesh next week during which she will hold talks with the top leadership there on a host of issues of bilateral and international interest. She is also likely to discuss issues such as relaxing visa norms. “This is completely a U-turn from the poll promise. The BJP had said something else during the campaign and is now doing completely the opposite after coming to the power,” he said.

BJP flays PPA for RS poll defeat in Arunachal Pradesh itanaGar, June 21 (Pti): Accepting its crushing defeat in the Rajya Sabha election, opposition BJP has charged People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) of 'dishonouring' the coalition dharma in a parliamentary democracy. The party in a statement today said, it was anticipated that the regional party PPA, which is part of the North East Regional Political Front (NERPF), having pre-poll alliance with the NDA in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections would uphold the very spirit in the biennial election for lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state. “It is unfortunate despite such an alliance with the BJP-led NDA; the regional party barrenly dismembered the spirit of opposition,” said BJP spokesperson Techi Necha in a statement. The BJP's nominee Tapen Siga lost the Rajya Sabha election to ruling Congress member Mukut Mithi by a big margin of 37 votes. The polling for the lone RS seat was held on June 19 last at the State Legislative Assembly Secretariat premises and result declared the same day. Meanwhile, senior PPA leader Laeta Umbrey, who unsuccessfully fought the 2014 assembly polls as the party's chief ministerial candidate, yesterday resigned from the party protesting the act of his party's legislators for supporting the Congress nominee in the Rajya Sabha election.
Meeting held to streamline education in Arunachal Pradesh itanaGar, June 21 (Pti): To streamline the dismal education scenario in Arunachal Pradesh, a joint coordination meeting here adopted several resolutions to work in tandem by all stakeholders of the state. The meeting held here yesterday resolved that maintenance of existing infrastructure in schools may be accorded top priority while expansion of infrastructure should be made as per the growth and need of the institutions, a copy of the document made available to the press said here today. The meeting, attended by elected representatives including ministers, parliamentary secretaries, MLAs, municipal and panchayat leaders also resolved that new schools should be opened up only after construction of sufficient classrooms and posting of teachers. Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, while addressing the meeting, exuded hope that the meaningful suggestions that have evolved should emerge as policy guidelines for the government. He suggested for constitution of a committee to be headed by Education Minister Tapang Taloh with Health Minister Kalikho Pul, Parliamentary Secretary Phosum Khimhun, MLAs P D Sona, Kento Rina, Paknga Bage, Honchun Ngandam as members to submit their recommendations to the government so that early decision can be taken for these reforms. Education minister in his observation said that the involvement of ministers, MLAs and public leaders would about revolutionary changes in the education sector. He insisted on strict implementation of transfer and posting in the schools and asked all the senior officers to come up with data to his office to examine the feasibility of transfer and posting right in the beginning of the new academic session.
MZP to build structure in Chakma area in Mizoram
Chakmas in Mizoram was a mere 198. But astonishingly, the population at present time has incredibly risen to somewhere about 1,50,000 which is virtually abnormal growth,” MZP president Lalhmachhuana said, adding that the students' body is soon likely to inform the Prime Minister about the abnormal growth of Chakma population in Mizoram. Lalhmachhuana also said that the students' body is "disappointed with the Chakmas who have be-
come arrogant to the indigenous Mizos.” “To mark and demonstrate that Mizoram is the land discovered by our forefathers at the cost of their lives, we are going to proceed with the construction of Zofate Chawlhbuk at Borapansury from June 25, 2014 and we believe this construction will instill the feeling of nationalism and patriotism among Mizos,” Lalhmachhuana said. MZP said it is strongly discontented with the Chakmas and regretted problems and troubles faced by the Mizos "due to the arrogant and hostile activities of the Chakmas." "As an example of opposition to the ingratitude and misbehaviour on the part of Chakma people and to tell the world that Mizoram belongs to the Mizos only,
the students' body would construct the Rest House at the proposed site within CADC, the MZP president affirmed. The MZP president then said that the initiative has been taken for the construction of Zofate Chawlhbuk at Boraoansury in 2012 after a settlement was concluded with the State Government. With its approval and permission, an area of 2500 sq.mts owned by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumers Affairs was earmarked for the construction of Zofate Chawlhbuk and on May 2, 2014 measurement was taken at the site. Subsequently, the State Government issued construction order on June 11, 2014, the MZP president said.
ZB to pursue Tamenglong accident case taMenGLOnG, June 21 (nnn): In connection with the BRTF truck accident killing seven persons in Tamenglong district on June 19 the Zeliangrong Baudi (Manipur) has decided to pursue the case on behalf of the victims' families until justice is delivered to the nearest kith and kin of those who died in the accident. ZB (M) demanded that the victims should be fully compensated and
medical re-imbursement should be adequately made to the injured. According to ZB (M), the accident took place when a BRTF truck, fully loaded with sand and transporting the labourers, was giving passage to escort vehicles plying on NH 37. "We share the grief and mourn with the bereaved family members and relatives in these hours of sorrow," ZB stated. The Baudi further expressed
gratitude to all the persons involved in necessary arrangements and support during the condolence service. Meanwhile, ZB (M) demanded action on the escort vehicles which sped away. "Knowing very well that their vehicles were partly responsible for that accident, instead of carrying out rescue operations, their vehicles sped away leaving behind those victims," it stated.
Guwahati, June 21 (ianS): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Saturday said that there was a vast difference between the words and work of the BJPled National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre. Referring to the central government's announcement of hiking rail fares, Gogoi said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised to bring down prices prior to the Lok Sabha polls, but chose to "hike the prices of railway tickets and freight charges, which is going to affect states like Assam". "Before the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had campaigned that good days will come once they form the government at the centre. However, going by their actions, there is no indication that the good days are coming," Gogoi told the media here. Gogoi also took up reports on the NDA government's recent move to give visa-free entry to Bangladeshi nationals below 18 years and above 65 years of age. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured during his Lok Sabha campaigning here that the illegal Bangladeshi nationals living in the state had to leave the state immediately. However, now they are planning to allow the Bangladeshis to enter the state without a visa," he said. "I do not mind giving visa
Rattled Assam CM feels heat after Lok Sabha drubbing Guwahati, June 21 (Pti): Amid indications that he might be replaced, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi refused to confirm the move to replace him and said any such decision will be taken by the Congress high command only. "I won't say yes, I won't say no," Gogoi said in a press conference at Guwahati when asked if his replacement was in the offing. "It is going to be a high command decision only... I am going to Delhi. We have a meeting with the high command," he added. The chief minister said all his counterparts of the Congress-ruled states, along with the PCC presidents, were called for the meeting. According to senior party leaders at the Congress headquarters in Delhi, Assam could be the first state where a change of guard can take place. Assam senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is leading the dissident camp of the party in the state, is likely to meet top Congress leadership soon. Congress leadership has been under pressure to replace Gogoi for a long time as rebellion had mounted in the state unit, more so after the poor show of the party in the Lok Sabha polls. on arrival as done by some countries at present. But giving entry without visa will create problems for a state like Assam where we are already facing illegal infiltration problems," he said. "This may be a policy of the central government to develop a better relationship with neighbouring country. But this is not the way and we are totally opposed to it," he added. Meanwhile, Assam's regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Saturday sent a memorandum to the president, registering
Kuki Students' body resents Mnp Govt act in Moreh iMPhaL, June 21 (nnn): The Kuki Students' Organisation-General Headquarters (KSO-GHQ) alleged that the state government of Manipur has acquired a village land without the consent of the village chiefs in the border area of Moreh. "In yet another instance of government’s audacity in acquiring land without the consent of the chiefs, it has clandestinely allotted village land in Moreh to its departments, which became public just recently in local newspapers on June 19, 2014," said the KSOGHQ. It added that impudence shown by the revenue department by allotting land measuring 3.6465 hectares to district and commerce industries, fire services, medical, treasury and PWD is not acceptable. According to the KSO-GHQ, the village chiefs did not have an inkling of this land acquisition, when an inquiry was initiated by the KSO. "No chiefs' authorization was obtained when the government allotted these lands to its departments. Therefore, this amounted to thievery," the apex Kuki students' body accused.
The statement then said the KSO and other tribal organizations have been suspicious all along of government’s game plan to grab tribal lands in the hills. The government created reserved forests, parks, JFMC etc. without an iota of respect to chiefs' rights, it added. The chiefs who are mostly illiterates generally kept their silence because of their gullibility; and also because of the notion that it was all for development and for the good of poor villagers. So, out of ignorance, the chiefs were in the dark while their lands were steadily annexed in the guise of development and progress. The government is becoming a land shark. The KSO then warned that it will no longer remain a mute spectator to this policy. According to the KSO, during Chief Minister RK Jaychandra’s times, the Manipur Legislative Assembly passed the MLR & LR Act to cover all the hill districts of Manipur and the Act was sent to the Governor of Manipur for his ‘Assent’.However the Governor flatly rejected the Act saying that it needs the approval of the Hill Area Committee and the Act was eventually quashed.
It is baffling how an Act already repealed in the past can now be used to acquire lands in the hill areas. While the government does not have the guts to acquire land in Ukhrul, Tamenglong, and Senapati, it differentially treated the lands in Kuki inhabited areas without any regard. It acted as if our lands are wastelands and opened for all. In fact, the government always tries to acquire land at its whims and fancy. The latest being the 3000 acres acquisition plan in Haolenphai, KSO stated. According to the KSO-GHQ, in the beginning it was just 250 acres, then 1000 acres, and now 3000 acres. The plan to acquire such massive area of land smells of a sinister design. It is inviting civil unrest by this action. As a matter of fact, the chief of Haolenphai has the unquestionable authority to grant plot of land for settlement within his village, at the same time the chief also has the rights to refuse any sale of land. It also said that the government is trying to make sure its land revenue and land reform policy applies to hill areas too. It passed acts or laws
detrimental to tribal people, especially to the traditions and customs of the Kuki people, the KSO stated. "The Village Authority Act, Village Development Council Act, etc. are such laws designed to drive a wedge between the chief and his villagers. These Acts or Laws are in contravention to the tribal’s customary chiefs/Khullakpas' relation with villagers. All the chiefs and Khullakpas and the tribal people should defy these land laws unitedly to protect ourselves. All tribal MLAs, ministers, MPs, Members of District Councils (MDCs), must uphold the sanctity of the traditional tribal landownership system and work accordingly. Tamu- Moreh area was also one of the battle fronts during the Anglo-Kuki War of 191719", the KSO-GHQ pointed out. Therefore, the government if it is sincere enough to usher in development in Moreh, must learn to tread carefully so as to avoid civil unrests. Development which condescends upon our traditions and customs is meaningless development for us," the apex Kuki students' body said.
Suspension of Operation expires on August 22 DiMaPur/iMPhaL, June 21 (nnn): The current terms of Suspension of Operation (SoO) between the Government of India, the Manipur Government and the two umbrella Kuki underground organizations – Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United People's Front (UPF) – will expire on August 22, which is also the date for the tripartite talks between these parties to be held in New Delhi. Meanwhile, KNO spokesperson Dr. Seilen Haokip when contacted by Newmai News Network, said the umbrella organisation will observe closely how the new government i.e., Narendra Modi led NDA perceives and considers the Kuki issue and the Kuki underground outfits. Dr. Haokip said the KNO has been studying the situation and will continue studying the scenario till the second week of August before signing for the extension of the Suspension of Operation
(SoO). "Signing the SoO pact just for the sake of signing every time it expires is a futile exercise," stated the KNO leader. Dr. Haokip however expressed hope that the NDA government will be better than the Congress led UPA government. "Yes, I personally feel more optimistic with the NDA than the previous government UPA," said Dr. Haokip, a prominent leader of KNO, adding with a jibe, "The UPA government was too arrogant and lacks integrity." The KNO leader further expressed his personal opinion that Modi's slogan of "minimum government and maximum governance" is something worth noting. "Mr Modi seems to be more firm and a man of integrity," added Dr. Haokip. However, it is too early to conclude things, added Dr. Haokip. "Let us wait and see," he said. On the line of Dr. Haokip, the UPF and NSCN-IM leaders too have expressed and said they have more faith
with the Narendra Modi led NDA government. Expressing similar views, Sanga Hmar, the convenor of the Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) of the United People's Front (UPF), the other umbrella organisation of Kuki underground organisations said they too have more faith on the NDA government than the previous Congress led UPA government. He expressed hope that things are likely to be on the move. Meanwhile, the NSCN-IM has expressed on various occasions hinting its good rapport with the NDA than the UPA. "We are more comfortable with the NDA leaders than the UPA leaders," said a prominent NSCNIM leader over phone today. He then recalled that it was during the NDA regime under Atal Behari Vajpayee things were moving at faster pace than during the UPA regime with regard to the Naga peace talks.
its protest over reports of the central government's proposal to give visa free entry to Bangladeshi nationals below 18 years and above 65 years of age. The AGP also voiced its concern over the central government's consent for construction of a big dam for the 600 MW Kholongchu hydroelectric power project in Bhutan. The memorandum reminded President Pranab Mukherjee that the project in Bhutan had caused devastating floods in at least five districts of Assam in 2004 and 2007.

More NE students clearing JEE THETA TUTORIALS
Guwahati, June 21 (tnn): Northeast students have bettered their 2013 performance in JEE (Advanced) this year with 191 students from six NE states, except Tripura, clearing the examination this year. Last year, 151 students from the region had cleared the examination. A total of 27,153 candidates have cleared JEE (Advanced), 2014, that was conducted on May 25. There are 9,784 seats on offer across the 16 IITs and ISM Dhanbad. Labanu K Konwar, public relations officer of IIT-G, said that though the number of students having cleared the exam is not high,
the scenario has improved. Of the 10,053 candidates who had registered for the exam from IIT-G zone, 1,582 candidates (1,457 boys and 125 girls) have cleared the test. All eyes are now on IIT-G, which may emerge as the first choice of many rank holders after it became the only Indian institute to make it to the list of 100 top universities across the globe that are less than 50 years old, according to the UK-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings. IIT-G has bagged the 87th slot. "It emerged as one of the top educational institutes globally which is yet to cross 50 years of establishment,"
the faculty member said. Students from Bihar dominated the list of students, who have cleared the examination this year from IIT-G zone. "A total of 1,338 candidates Bihar, 41 from Siliguri and 12 from Dubai, UAE, have cleared JEE (Advanced). Prem Anand with 284 all-India rank is the topper from IIT-G zone. He has secured 260 marks out of 360," Konwar said. He said the joint implementation committee of JEE (Advanced)-2014 has decided to allow twice the number of students against the available seats in each category to fill choices for various undergraduate courses in IITs and ISM, Dhanbad.

One Government, One Tax – A Myth Or Reality? Dry Nagaland: My tryst and opinion
O
f late, there have been increasing civil uprisings against the so-called Naga Political Groups (NPG) for their excesses, especially in taxation. This is bad for Naga national politics because we will lose our face in the eyes of the world. Any political institution that has lost the confidence and support of the general public will ultimately come tumbling down sooner than later. “One Government, one tax”; a resolution adopted by Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) on October 31, 2013 emanated from protest against many years of suffering in the hands of some so-called national workers and apathy of the State towards the plight of the people. The Central government agencies in Nagaland will naturally turn a blind eye to the problem because it is serving their purpose. In the past, Nagas had only one political institution; the Naga National Council (NNC) and and one national government; the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN). NNC had levied its membership fee @ Re. 1.00 per head and
household tax @ Rs. 10.00 per household. Later on, when FGN was formed in 1956, the Naga national government levied additional annual army maintenance tax @ Rs. 100.00 per household. All other contributions were in the form of free-will gift that varied from hard cash to kinds; anything that could sustain the national workers. The national workers gladly accepted any gift without complaint. This is the type of NPG Nagas long for, today. NPGs of present day will not accept a pumpkin for a contribution. They will not accept anything less than hard cash. That’s the difference between national workers of yesteryears and of today. In theory; “one government, one tax” is a very beautiful slogan. But in practice; it is not without complications because unification seems the last thing in the minds of the NPGs. While ACAUT’s resolution for one government is quite legitimate, unity as a timeless precondition for tax contribution towards Naga national cause will have far-reaching ramifications. It will lead to self-destruction from actions and counter-
are against paying tax to NPGs that are misusing tax payers’ money for personal gratification without transparency and accountability. Constructing palatial houses, driving latest MUV/SUVs, leading luxurious life-style, etc. have become mockery to tax payers. What people want is for the national governments to channelize tax payers’ money through a unified government and use it to promote Naga cause at home and across the world. It is unbecoming of the NPGs and their governments to relegate themselves to Nagaland State’s internal affairs. Never had the feeling of Nagas of Nagaland State and Nagas of outside Nagaland State so pronounced as of today. This is partly the creation of the national governments. As far as Naga national politics for sovereignty is concerned, the Nagas had integrated themselves, both territorially and emotionally in Article 1 of Naga Yehzabo. Therefore, it is selfdefeating to call ourselves Nagas of Nagaland State or Nagas of other Indian States. Naga sovereignty is not something to be wished away; at least, not for the
actions. It is already happening. Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) has been working for reconciliation and unity of the NPGs since 2008. There’s no denying the fact that they have achieved reconciliation to a great extent. Yet, the dream of one national government still remains elusive. Which group is responsible for delaying the Naga unity? Isn’t it high time that FNR come out clear on this? If FNR is for the people, it should also be answerable to the people. Let Naga people know the truth. What’s the point endlessly trying to crack the hard nut whose hearts God must have hardened. People’s patience has a limit. It’s time that Nagas are allowed to call spade, a spade. The resolution of ACAUT had committed that the people are prepared to pay tax to one unified Naga national government in addition to the State Government. This plainly puts that people in general still cherish for Naga sovereignty. The NPGs need to realize that Nagas are not refusing to pay tax for a national cause. The people are only refusing to pay tax to multiple governments. The people
sake of the fallen true patriots. Therefore, if sovereignty is still our goal, it is imperative that we exercise caution and restraint in our talks and actions, lest our own folly is used against us by our ever watchful adversary to their advantage. Any public action against the excesses should be subjective and not against the political institution, provided the NPGs do not shield the criminals. A criminal is a criminal, irrespective of whether one is in this group or that group. The actions of some NPGs and their ranks and file are doing dis-service to Naga national cause by deviating from national principle. They are no less antinational than what they had branded the articulate common men. It’s time to segregate true nationalists from pseudo-nationalists. Any NPG that is against Naga unity must be pseudo-nationalist. We owe it to the true nationalists; past, present and future for their service because Naga National politics is fated to stay so long as sovereignty is the dream or till it is totally wiped out by our adversary through its divisive policy as of today. heavens perfect. Knowing God can make the world perfect. Unknowing God is the crux of all evils in the world and knowing God is the only solution. So how to perform religious rites well in different religions should be replaced by how to actually know the true God the Creator of the heavens and the earth and to build up character towards imitating the perfect characteristics of God. So “Know God, believe in Him, fear Him, obey Him” be acknowledged by the world so that the world may be beautified by knowing God. Rev. L. Suohie Mhasi

randishing hammers and levers, some of our community and religious leaders broke open doors and windows of those houses and outlets selling alcohol in and around Mokochung town; it was in the early 90’s when Nagaland was in the infant stages of being a “Dry State”. A young and self-righteous theologian with an impressionable mind, I also joined those leaders in the destruction spree. A significant amount of IMFL and cauldrons/pots of local brews were destroyed and set afire ceremoniously at the central police point of the town. I may not have realized then, in the midst of the frenzy, but I can recall back and sense the indignation of those individuals and families, whose properties we destroyed in our selfjustified action; they must have been watching from nearby or afar, unable to fight back but except to curse us. Even the regular customers must have watched with the same indignation while cursing us. “This is our livelihood” and “This is not the role of a theologian” were whispers I can recall that got drowned in the midst of all the drama. Call them brave or desperate, some individuals tried to douse the furnace of the alcohols we set on fire to collect unbroken bottles. Yes, we tried to destroy “the alcohol”, but we could not restraint all those who came to collect it, except to brand/judge them as sinners, good for nothing, and antisocial. I consider declaring Nagaland a Dry State, in itself, one of the greatest achievements in the history of Nagaland and duly applaud those who were behind the historic achievement. But let us face it; the State has failed miserably in living up to being a “Dry State”. Churches, excise department, Police, student bodies, Mothers’ Unions/association, tribal bodies, etc, undoubtedly invested and investing much effort to prevent trade in/of Alcohol into and in the State,
but availability is not an issue in many parts of our “Dry State” with demand showing no signs of relenting. In my blunt opinion, I consider the overall drama of declaring our state a “Dry State” as a short-cut approach to prevention of alcoholism and its related ills. Yes, availability is one factor contributing to alcoholism but merely destroying alcohol is not the only solution in addressing the issue. There are other factors that lead to alcoholism and unless the church and State government, in particular, keenly address those factors, “Dry State” in its true form will be a far cry. A recovering drug user once shared with me, “My parents, in their hope to help me kick my habit, would send me to places/ centres where drugs are not apparently available, but getting a pill or two was not a big problem for me; But I am a changed person today and I can live a sober life even where drugs are easily available”. Simple moral; getting alcohol in our “Dry Sate” is not a dilemma as long one is not ready to kick one’s habit. Similarly, not being a “Dry State” also does not make one an alcoholic. I am not against Dry State, but, as a lay person, I can see gaps in addressing the issues. As far as my observation is concerned, the Church, Civil Societies and the Government addressed and are still addressing only the object (Alcohol) and not the human (Alcohol users); we seem to be fighting more against Alcohol rather than against Alcoholism. If the Church, Civil Societies and the Government had better strategies to tackle the problem of Alcoholism, the situation would have been much better today. But to date, the strategies are limited to imposing fines, putting culprits behind bars, destroying of seized alcohols and some punitive punishments. Jails and prayer centers are becoming the last resort for those parents and relatives of alcohol abusers. I often
hear people saying “alcohol hinders the spiritual life of a person”; so, how effectively and dynamically has the Church has and is working among alcohol abusers remains a thorny question. Except few Youth Camps, Revivals, Spiritual Counseling, and Seminars.etc there are no skill building programs specifically on the issue of alcohol and alcoholism. Nagaland has a handful of detoxification and Rehabilitation Centers. Today, most of the clients coming to our (Prodigals’ Home’s) rehab centre are those with alcohol issues. It is sad to mention that many young people today are initiated into alcohol owing to various reasons in life accompanied by ignorance about the harmful effects of alcohol abuse. Primary prevention program for young people at the Government and Church level is missing in the state. If the Church, Civil Societies and the Government want to effectively implement prohibition act, all needs to implement effective action to reduce or oust the problem. Our “Prohibition Act” has failed miserably in comparison to its sporadic moments of success. I strongly believe that if the strategy is blended towards addressing both Alcohol and Alcoholism, the impact would be much effective and sustainable. This needs a complementary initiative by church, Civil Societies and the state. While the government implement the act in letter and spirit, the churches and the civil societies can initiate innovative strategies to curb the situation in the form of organizing primary prevention programs, intensive skilled interventions among the early initiators and alcoholics, Counseling and focused spiritual camps. I opine that the prohibition act will remain a mockery if such determined and complementary interventions are not carried out hand in hand. Maong Jamir Prodigals’ Home

We vehemently condemn such self-centred attitude and mentality and such an individual should not be allowed to continue to work in any right thinking organization,” it stated today. “Nagaland is for all of us irrespective of tribes and hence there can be no bar for any qualified contractor to work anywhere. storage and stock management is not easy to put in place. Public SPace On recent political turmoil in Nagaland
I
n Compliance to the recent political turmoil in the political party in Nagaland, I would like to put forth my stand from a layman perception, considering the present political situation in the state. No doubt the total shift or 3/4 Merger of NCP MLA’s with its Party Worker to BJP gives a new “Ray of Hope” to the Party and to the people of Nagaland in the realm of developmental activities. This is rightly stated by its President as - a Red Letter day, for the party and to people of Nagaland as a whole. But on the other side, the NCP workers who still continue to work in NCP might have a better vision and idea of their own, the reason and motive behind this heck-up discourse is best known to them. No matter what the situation may occur at this juncture, both party should think to be on the same
page, looking ahead of the greater interest of the state. And when we go through the “Tenth Scheduled of the Constitution of India” and its provisions for disqualification on ground of defection. We can’t assume as defection under the scheduled of the constitution. Since, The Sub-paragraph (1) of the Para 2 of the schedule, clearly states that any member of a house shall be disqualify; subject of the provisions of paragraph 3, 4 and 5, a member of a House belonging to any political party shall be disqualified for being a member of the House. But the case of the 16th June - imbroglio of 3 NCP MLA disqualifications on ground of defection did not apply here. Since, the provision of the 10th schedule – Sub –para (2) of the Paragraph 4 states; For the purposes of sub-paragraph (1) of this Paragraph (i.e. Paragraph 4. - Disqualifi-
cation on ground of defection not to apply in case of merger.- Sub-para (1) A member of a House shall not be disqualified under sub-para (1) of the paragraph 2 where his original Political Party merges with another political party and he claims that he and any other members of his original party - (a) Have become a members of such other political party or, as the case may be, of a new political part formed by such merger : )The merger of the original political party of a member of a house shall be deemed to have taken place if, and only if, not less than twothirds (2/3rd) of the members of the legislature party concerned have agreed to such merger. As such, constitution legality of merger is fully fulfilled since ¾ MLA consensually amalgamated to the BJP. M Zachamo Ezung President DLYF Dimapur Nagaland

When Global WarminG Kills Your God
Salmon dry in the sun in the indigenous Alaskan village of Chefornak.
Fishing for salmon in the Kivia River, close to the Bering Sea
Michael Andrew testifies about his belief in "ellam yua," the creator who provides king salmon to the Yup’ik people.
Max Olick, a village public safety officer, explains why he decided to flout the ban despite his law-enforcement position: “I risked my job going out [for] something that I believe.” Dana Kopanuk (left), a 78-year-old defendant, shares dried king salmon with his fellow fishermen and their supporters.
A dog team prepares to begin the Iditarod. Warming temperatures have drastically changed the terrain for the annual race. Simple wooden crosses mark the grave sites at an indigenous cemetery in Chefornak.
“Spiritually, it brought me down,” said David Phillip, explaining on the witness stand how last year’s shortage of king salmon affected him.
Twenty-three Alaskan tribesmen broke the law when they overfished king salmon, but they claim their faith gave them no other choice Adam Weymouth o there is a black fish swimming up the river, looking for a fish trap to swim into. Cycle of life, right?” Grant Kashatok was telling me stories the traditional Yup’ik way—his fingers entwined with string, like a child playing cat’s cradle. As he spoke, he looped the string into different shapes: it became a hunter, a mountain, a boat, an oar. “And he came to a fish trap that was broken,” he said, “and some of the fish in it were dead. The black fish poked his head out of the river to see who it was that owned the trap, and he saw that the village was dirty, and that the dogs were not tied up, and the woman came out to throw out the scraps of a fish dinner and he watched the dogs fight over the bones. The fish did not want his bones fought over. So he carried on swimming up river.” Kashatok is the principal of the only school in Newtok, Alaska—a town of 354 perched at the mouth of the Ninglick River, just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. In 2009, it was one of 26 indigenous villages listed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as “priority action communities”: The ground beneath it is slipping into the sea at such a rate that the village may only have two more years before the first houses fall away. Throughout the state, climate change is intensifying storm surges and thawing the permafrost—land that previously remained frozen throughout the year. Parts of highways are sinking. Trees around Fairbanks have slipped to such rakish angles that they have become known as drunken forests. But it’s not hard to see why the YukonKuskokwim Delta, a watershed the size of Britain, is especially vulnerable. Approaching from the air, it’s difficult to determine whether this region is a landmass with many lakes or a body of water with many islands. The Yup’ik never intended to live here yearround: They were a nomadic people forced into settlements by missionaries and the government. The villages where the Yup’ik now live year-round were once their summer fishing and hunting grounds. I went to the Delta to cover the trial of 23 Yup’ik fishermen who had violated a ban on the fishing of king (or Chinook) salmon. In late June and early July, as many as 40 million of the fish have been known to migrate throughout the state, returning from the sea to spawn on gravel beds. They run so thick that the fish swimming on the outer edges of the river are forced onto the banks. King salmon, I am told, can weigh as much as sled dogs. But over the past few years, their numbers have dropped dramatically. By the beginning of the 2012 season, the Department of Fish and Game was alarmed enough to gather a panel of fishery scientists and ecol-
“S
ogists from across Alaska to determine a response. They came up with seven hypotheses for the decline. Natural cycles are cited, but the report returns again and again to climate change. Rivers are breaking up earlier along their routes, sending more vulnerable juveniles out into the ocean. Changing ocean currents may be spreading disease. There are shifts in other species in the food chain upon which the salmon depend. Warmer waters are depleting the energy of the fish, causing higher mortality rates along the migration route. The impact of each of these factors is currently unknown. In June 2012, after Fish and Game announced a ban throughout the Delta, State Trooper Brett Scott Gibbens was sent out to patrol the rivers around Bethel, the central hub of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. He’d learned, through a press release, that a group of Yup’ik fishermen planned to defy the ban, and as he came down the Kuskokwim River, he found a small fleet of boats— somewhere between 12 and 16, he later testified. The gill nets they were using were perhaps 50 fathoms long, which made them illegal under the ban. Many of the fishermen pulled their gear and left as he was identifying and rounding up the others. Some of the fishermen later went on to pay fines. But 23 of them refused, and last summer, they stood trial in a Bethel courtroom. On the first morning of the trial, the court was standing-room only, crowded with defendants, supporters, families with babies, and a handful of journalists and cops. Behind Judge Bruce Ward, next to the American flag, hung a traditional Yup’ik mask. Someone produced a Ziploc of salmon jerky and passed it down the row. Everyone took a piece and chewed on it, including the two state troopers. The courtroom began to smell like a fish market. Felix Flynn was the first fisherman to take the stand. “Is it okay if he occasionally breaks into Yup’ik?” asked his lawyer, Jim Davis, pushing back a luxuriant sweep of hair. He is one of the founders of the Northern Justice Project, a private firm that represents low- and middle-income native Alaskans, and had taken this case pro bono. “We'll cross that bridge when we come to it,” replied the judge. Flynn raised his hand and swore on the Bible. A short man with drooping moustaches and cheeks scarred by frostbite, he began by telling the court how his father took him out herring fishing when he was a boy. “To start with, all I see is ocean,” he said. “Then after a while there’s glassy water, and there’s other water that’s not glassy. And that means the herring are here. That’s what I learnt from my father. I'm subsistence. I was born and raised an Eskimo. It’s in my blood. It’s in my family blood.”
“And what does that mean to you, subsistence?” prompted Davis, leaning over with his hands on the podium. “Subsistence is living from the land,” said Flynn. “It’s what we've always done. We go hunt ducks and seals in the ocean in the springtime. Ptarmigan. Salmon. My greatgrandfather and grandfather told us we have to be very careful what we catch. God made them for everyone. I was living subsistence even when I was in the military. My whole life. I make a fish camp every year and dry 30, 40 kings. I set a net last summer but there was too much closure. Things have been rough.” “And how did it feel not to be able to catch enough?” Davis asked him. “I have a grandchild, 2 years old—” He paused and rubbed his eyes. Several other men in the gallery also began to cry. “My grandson said to me, ‘When we gonna go check the net?’ And I couldn't say anything.” Michael Cresswell, a state trooper, leaned over and whispered in my ear: “This is momentous. This is climate change on trial.” A few days later, I flew to the small village of Akiak, population 346, to visit Mike Williams, the current chief of the Yupiit nation. Williams is one of Alaska’s most outspoken voices on climate change. In 2007, he was invited to testify before a U.S. Representatives Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. “If global warming is not addressed,” he told them, “the impacts on Alaskan Natives and American Indians will be immense.” He spoke to Congress about the Iditarod, the thousand-mile sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome. “To keep the dogs cool, since the days are too warm, we have to mostly mush by night now,” Williams told the politicians. “And we also mush more on land and less on frozen rivers because of thawing.” The Iditarod’s sponsors include, among others, ExxonMobil. Now, Williams was helping to coordinate the fishermen’s defense. To get to his Akiak office, you have to enter through a bingo hall. The doors hang from their hinges, the plasterboard sags from the ceiling. The toilet is broken. During our interview, the Internet was down; he spent much of the two hours trying to check his Yahoo account. “This is my war room,” he said, gesturing around himself. “This is where I cause trouble. I'm doing better than Gandhi.” In court, the fishermen’s civil disobedience has been framed as a First Amendment issue: The Yup’ik believe they have an obligation to continue their ancestral traditions. As Jim Davis summarized it, in a brief submitted before the trial: “If Yup’ik people do not fish for King Salmon, the King Salmon spirit will be offended and it will not return to the river.” An amicus brief filed by the American Civil Liberties Union elaborated further: A Yup’ik fisherman who is a sincere
believer in his religious role as a steward of nature, believes that he must fulfill his prescribed role to maintain this 'collaborative reciprocity' between hunter and game. Completely barring him from the salmon fishery thwarts the practice of a real religious belief. Under Yup’ik religious belief, this cycle of interplay between humans and animals helped perpetuate the seasons; without the maintaining of that balance, a new year will not follow the old one. But now the seasons are out of balance, and the Yup’ik can't stop hold the sea back. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, an estimated 86 percent of indigenous villages in Alaska will need to move within the next 50 years, at a cost of $200 to $500 million per village. Newtok is preparing to move to a new site, across the water to Nelson Island, but a struggle against the village leadership has recently stalled the relocation effort. As Williams drove me back to his house for lunch, he told me how Akiak had lost its graveyard to the water three years earlier. The bones and skulls of their ancestors had started emerging from the banks, drifting down toward Bethel. The community had gathered up what they could and carried the remains to a new mass grave on the other side of town. Lunch was a soup of whitefront goose, shot by one of Mike’s five kids. I sucked at the thin flesh of a boiled head, its eyes cooked to cataracts, its teeth a saw line. Dessert was the local version of ice cream: blueberries, margarine, and sugar, mixed and frozen. The soup was good, the ice cream revolting. The paneled walls were lined with photos of sledding kids bundled up in parkas, dream catchers, graduation portraits, animal hide drums, mushing memorabilia, and a Moravian church calendar. There was a basketball game on the corner—Montana vs. Indiana. A wood-burning stove in the corner heated the room, fueled with driftwood snagged from the river. Outside, Williams told me he wanted to show me where he had been born. He led me down to his dog yard by the river. His 30-year-old son, Mike Jr.—who ran his first Iditarod last year and came in 22 places ahead of his dad—was putting eight dogs into their traces and tethering them to a quad bike, the only way to exercise them without snow on the ground. About 40 dogs were pacing on their chains, yelping and yammering—a mottled crew of huskies and malamutes, lean, strong, and eager. “So where were you born?” I asked, looking at the houses around us: cheap rectangular structures raised on stilts. Their yards were full of buoys and outboards, caribou antlers and skulls, snowmobiles and aluminum skiffs awaiting their respective seasons. Williams pointed out toward the middle of the river. “Out there.”
That, he told me, is where the hospital once was—where all of Akiak once was. He waved his hand expansively. “I'm continuously moving my dog yard,” he said. I followed him down a dirt track that stopped abruptly at the river. “We lost this whole road last year,” he said. “One day I was driving down it. The next day, it was gone.” Shrubs had slipped, pointing horizontally across the water. The detritus of a house lay beside them—twisted sheets of corrugated iron, sodden insulation, pipes and tubes and lumber. It looked like the flotsam from a storm. “Nobody here knows the weather,” said 66-year-old fisherman Noah Okoviak, speaking from the witness stand in the Bethel courtroom. “Nobody here knows how many fish will come. Only the creator.” Judge Ward listened to Okoviak’s defense and found his beliefs to be sincere. But as with the other 22 fishermen, he found Okoviak guilty. The state had sufficient reason to impose the ban, the judge explained, and the fishermen had violated it. But the sentences were lenient—a year of probation and a fine of $250 apiece (in one case, $500) to be paid over the course of a year or sometimes two. At times, the judge was openly sympathetic. “When this case goes up for appeal,” he said, as Okoviak took his seat, “the cold transcript will not reflect that everyone in the courtroom was standing, and that record will not reflect that there are a number of people in the courtroom with tears in their eyes.” The fishermen’s cases have indeed moved on to the Alaska Court of Appeals, where their oral arguments may be heard as early as this summer. There, state-appointed judges will grapple with the same question the court faced in 1979, when an indigenous hunter named Carlos Frank was charged with illegally transporting a newly slain moose. Frank argued that he had needed the animal for a religious ceremony. Two lower courts found him guilty, but the Alaska Supreme Court reversed the verdict, calling moose meat “the sacramental equivalent to the wine and wafer in Christianity.” This, in the end, is what’s at stake for the Yup’ik fishermen. Their villages may be swallowed up by the sea, but the people themselves won’t float away. They’ll relocate en masse or drift into the urban diaspora of Anchorage. But if they stop fishing king salmon, the Yup’ik believe they’ll lose something far more fundamental than their homes. Harold Borbridge, an indigenous Fairbanks-based consultant with a wife from Newtok, put it this way: “If they can move the things that are important, the language, the culture, the dancing, if they can move the character, they'll have been successful. Anyone can move a few houses.” Adam Weymouth is a freelance writer based in London. Photos by Loren Holmes. Source: The Atlantic

od has entrusted us with the most outstanding nation in the history of the world. The United States’ freedom, technology and wealth have enabled the dissemination of the gospel throughout the world. For believers to have a cavalier attitude toward the moral freefall that threatens our future is both spiritually naïve and a terrible stewardship of the blessings our forefathers passed down to us. Jesus warned His disciples that following Him would put them in conflict with the culture. He said things like (to paraphrase slightly): “If the world hates me, it will also hate you” (John 15:18) “I did not come to bring peace but a sword” (Matthew 10:34) “I am sending you out as a sheep among wolves” (Matthew 10:16) “I will set father against son and … daughter-in-law against mother-in-law” (Matthew 10:35) That is why our ancestors used to sing hymns that equaled battle cries, singing
…Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Matthew 22:37 The scripture states that love is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10 ). The whole truths of the scriptures are basically based on the importance of having love in our hearts. It is this very virtue which has secured our salvation in Christ and our foundation will last as long as the virtue remains in us. It has to be made known that we live in a world which is void of love but for those who are in Christ, the tendency to love will always remain. Humans were created to have a relationship with God but our ancestors defied the warnings of God, which as a result affected our relationship with God. The existence of the Church of Christ can be attributed to the sacrifice of Christ. If Christ had not died, we would all have perished in our sins. But the result of His death was that, we became what He wanted us to be. The Word of God says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old has gone, the new has come ( 2nd Corinthians 5:17 ). Being aware of this we the Church of Christ must pursue the righteousness of God. The Church as a corporate body has its own sins and weaknesses but we as the members are

such refrains as, “A mighty fortress is our God,” or, “Stand up, stand up for Jesus, you soldiers of the cross.” They understood that Jesus had called them to a battlefield, not a playground. They took seriously Paul’s admonition: “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). Signing peace treaties In recent years, many churches have dropped all images of war in favor of a peace treaty with the world. We speak of Jesus as a healer and leader, but not Lord and King. We shout grace, whisper repentance and make inordinate attempts to ingratiate ourselves with those who oppose us. We retreat into silence in the face of horrendous evil and hope it will all go away. Do you suppose our children and grandchildren will one day ask, “Where were you when America lost the cultural war? What did you do when the world approved cohabitation, same-sex marriage, the proliferation of pornography, abortion on demand and the teaching of evolution as the source
of life in public schools? Did you stand up and fight when the anti-God forces insisted on removing any reference to God and the Bible from the public arena?” How will we answer when those questions come? Will we excuse our silence by saying, “We didn’t feel like it was our role to clean up the marketplace”? If that were God’s response in Jonah’s day, He would not have insisted that Jonah go to the pagan city of Nineveh and warn them to repent or face destruction. If Jeremiah embraced a passive philosophy, he would have been a popular prophet instead of winding up knee-deep in mud in a cistern. Avoiding involvement Will we explain our failure to get involved by saying, “Our ultimate hope is to win people to Christ, so we focused on building up the church”? Or will we say, “We didn’t want the church to have a negative image in the community, so we emphasized only what we’re for”? If John the Baptist had that philosophy, he would never have confronted King Herod’s immorality and got himself beheaded.
Church of Love Ambrose .J. Chakre Founder President Ambrose Foundation in Christ Ministries Kohima, nagaland expected to love each other as Christ loved us. Truth is, we will know what love is only when we experience it. The Churches which are void of this virtue will one day be destroyed. The reason behind the “death of the Churches “is because of the absence of love. Just to remind us of what love is, I quote the scripture which states “ Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trust, always hopes, always perseveres… it never fails ( 1st Corinthians 13:4-8 ). Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the
Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality ( Romans 12:9-13 ). These truths are for us and I declare to the Churches that unless we mend our ways, the love of God will never work in us. For where there is no love, death remains and where there is death, sin remains. Truth is, if we invest in sin, death and destruction will ultimately destroy us (Romans 6:23 ). God rebukes the churches which are controlled by impatience, cruelty, envy, boastfulness, pride, arrogance, anger and malice. The Lord wants us to be sincere and rather than honoring ourselves, we should see the good of others and honor others above ourselves. We should be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. When we learn to love one another, the law will have no power
Will we try to explain our passivity by saying, “I believed in the separation of church and state. Christians should not get involved in political battles, so I remained neutral”? If that had been Christ’s approach, He never would have said, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13), or, “Blessed are you when people insult you (and) persecute you” (Matthew 5:11). If Dietrich Bonhoeffer had that philosophy, there would be no books haling him as a courageous Christian martyr for opposing Adolph Hitler.
to make us guilty of this man’s blood.” Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men!” (Acts 5:28-29). Admittedly, it appears the culture war is all but lost. Unless the Lord intervenes through His return or the outpouring of His Holy Spirit in a dramatic revival, our civilization is heading for moral collapse. However, our calling is not to surrender to the forces of darkness but to stand firm in the faith. The rest is up to God. Matthew 19:26 says with Him all things are possible. Besides, I would like for my Standing for truth grandchildren to know that I had enough Church leaders, consider a couple pasperception to see what was coming—and sages of Scripture and ask yourself, “Am I standing for God’s truth with boldness, or had enough love for them to courageously fight the good fight of faith. am I cowering because I fear opposition?” At just twenty-two years of age, Bob became the “Be strong and courageous. Do not be pastor of Southeast Christian Church. That small congregation of 120 members became one of the afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord largest churches in America, with 18,000 people your God goes with you; he will never leave you attending the four worship services every weekend nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). in 2006 when Bob retired. Now through Bob Russell Ministries, Bob continues to preach at churches & “We gave you strict orders not to teach in conferences throughout the United States, provide this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jeru- guidance for church leadership, mentor other ministers salem with your teaching and are determined and author Bible study videos for use in small groups.
over us, and we shall be made complete in love. The nature of this write up is not what the title depicts but it is actually an attempt by the writer to make the truths of God’s love, judgment and promises known to the world and all the Churches. This is what God says to the Churches… “ Because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God will give to each person according to what he has done. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentiles. But glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good; first for the Jews, then for the Gentiles. For God does not show favoritism (Romans 2:5-11 ). This is an appeal to the leaders of the Churches and to all the members of the Churches to live by the truths of God’s Word. You shall not be judged if you are truly a member of the Church of Christ. Follow Christ and win souls.
Opposite run way leads to demotion

he word ‘Jonah’ comes from Hebrew Yonah which means ‘Dove’. He was the son of Amittai which signified ‘truth’ or ‘telling truth’ which means he have to be innocent like a dove and tell the truth. Similar to his name he has to preach good news to Assyrian capital and akin to his father’s name he must tell the truth to the enemy city. He was from Gath-hepher, three miles west of Nazareth and lower part of Galilee. So Pharisees claim of no prophet raised from Galilee was wrong (Jn 7: 52). Unacceptable Jewish tradition claims that he was the son of a widow from Zarephath whom Elijah raised from death (1Ki. 17: 19-23). Jonah belongs to tribes Zebulon from northern kingdom. He lived at the time of king Jeroboam-II when spirituality of nation was declining. Spiritual poverty engulfed the society, religions became ritualistic, idolatry was rampant and injustice prevailed. This book was written approximately 835 BC because book mentions the temple (2: 4, 7). Some scholars reject the authorship on Jonah since it is written in third person. However, record in the third person was the literary styles of those days. Nineveh was the capital city of Assyrian kingdom founded by Nimrod the great, grandson of Noah (Gen. 10: 8,11). Perhaps it was the largest city of that world. The city was located 500 miles North East of the Jonah’s native place. This city was destroyed in 612 BC about 150 years after Jonah’s visit. Amazing miracles recorded in the book show how the Lord did: hurl a storm on the sea (1: 4); lots fall on Jonah (1: 7); fish swallow Jonah alive and sea stop raging (1: 17); fish vomit Jonah in a sea shore (2: 10); nation repent (3: 10); made plant grow (4: 6); worms eat the plant (4: 7); blow a east wind (4: 8). Christ attested this historical accuracy (Mt. 12: 39-41) and even Jonah was the only prophet whom Jesus likened Himself. The entire incident shows Jonah was running. In chapter 1 he run away from God (en route Tarshish); in chapter 2 he run toward God (remembered temple); in chapter 3 he run with God (preached in Nineveh); and in chapter 4 he run ahead of God (complained for not destroying the city). Therefore it is fit to say Jonah ran. The chapter 3 is the best where Jonah ran with God. In another words he walked or worked with God. Instead of covering book from bird eye survey it is better to study chapter1 in detail. Thus opposite run way leads to demotion:
presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD (v. 3). The LORD told Jonah to go to Nineveh (1: 1-2) that was a great gentile city but was hostile to the Israelites. The nationalistic mind of Jonah may have been the main factor that hindered him from visiting this place. He knew if he preach there they will repent and God will forgive their sins (4: 2). He did not want enemy nation to be saved. It may be assumed that because of Jewish nationality he was afraid or the people of the city may not accept the message and ill treat him. Whatever the circumstance may have been, he flew toward west from the presence of the Lord. To Tarshish (present Spain) 2000 miles from Jonah’s native place, farther than Nineveh. Therefore he got first demotion down to
the sea since sea is below the ground level.
Demotion to the lowest part Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep (v. 5). Often people seek creator’s face only in the last stages of their problem. In the same way except Jonah all the passengers began to pray to their god. However may be apart from Jonah there was not anyone who worshiped YHWH. Chances of danger are more on good carrier ship in any unnatural calamity. So they lighten load that ship may not sink but their entire attempt utterly failed. People were busy to save their life but Jonah did nothing Demotion to the seashore Bur Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the for he knew it was because of him only. He got sec-
ond demotion as he went down to the lowest part of the ship. Demotion to the water So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging (v. 15). Captain wake up Jonah and advised him to call on his God. Meanwhile to find out who is responsible for this problem they cast lots and it fell on Jonah. This shows God was controlling the situation. However the fellow passengers did not scold him but searched the cause of the problem by asking his profession, the place of arrival and nationality. Jonah responded he fear sovereign God and who is the creator of heavens and earth (v. 9). Fear of YHWH fall on all the passengers. Instead of confessing his sin to God, Jonah advised the passengers to throw him in the sea. Tempestuous grew more and their hard row totally failed. Their entire effort bore not fruit and at last there was no any option except to follow Jonah’s advice. So they cried to YHWH to carry out Jonah’s wish to save them. Finally they threw him into the sea and Jonah got third demotion. Demotion into the belly Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights (v. 17). At last Jonah got final demotion into the belly of a fish. The type of fish is unknown but for sure it was a big fish. Jonah might have faced many problems such as: less oxygen supply (as fish breaths through gills); scarcity of drinkable water (as ocean water is salty); without food stuff; no light; and without changing cloth. In fear Jonah might have passed urine and toilet inside the fish’s guts which made him like staying inside a restroom. As the fish swam very fast to vomit him out at Nineveh, he may have a hard time for sleeping or standing or for any other posture. Moreover he might have been scared since he was alone in the dark corner. In nut shell it can be said that when God removed His hand fish’s belly became Jonah’s dwelling place. The Jonah’s life from above study shows that whenever a person runs away from God he/she is only embracing demotion. If Jonah might not repent inside the fish belly and cried to the Lord he may be permanently down to the hell. Therefore instead of running away from God whatever the situation or circumstance may be it is always good part on us to carry out the Lord instruction. The Best Team Of Football
I
Thamsing Lamkang SRC Dimapur
f you are a Footballer or football fan, let me ask a simple question: Which country is the best national football team in the world, and which 11 men were they? I am sure many would quickly reflect the 5 times FIFA World Cup winners Brazil National Team or some may say, the defending champion of the last 2010 FIFA World Cup winners’ Spanish National Team. But surprisingly the defending champions are out of the ongoing World Cup competition in Brazil. They may have many reasons for their early exits, and the team cannot even make it to the last 16. Some may opinions that due to not playing the qualification round from the early stages to improve their team game/work. Maybe their advantage of the World Cup winner for 2010 in South Africa may also have many disadvantage of their direct entry into the World Cup Finals? After the early exits of Spain from the football greatest competition in Brazil, the world right now is without any champion until the new winner emerges. Who do you think will be the new world champion? Please don’t refer me to go ocean and find for another “Octopus” to predict the World Cup winner. Let’s not give another headache to the innocent octopus. Let alone live for themselves, not for man’s prediction. Every team members are the best one’s selected to represent their National Team. The ‘Ultimate Goal’ of every team is to win for their country, and that’s what we call ‘passion’. But for time-being let’s changed our mindset from football, and focus on another team who plays and win souls for Jesus! The team is far better than those of the best National Teams competing in the ongoing World Cup finals in Brazil. This team always wins that does not dissolve with the passing of time. And this best team of all time, they were made up of Peter, John, James, Andrew, Bartholomew, Thomas, Thaddeus, James, Philip, Matthew and Simon. You might be confused, what team were they on? Actually they were not a sports team at all, but these eleven ordinary men are the team capable to change and transform the world through their Coach Jesus. You too can be part of this extraordinary team; they play to represent their Master. Teams in which everyone is essential, and which everyone can join, no specific qualities are needed. It is a team that lasts forever, not only for this lifetime but even beyond. “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever” 1Cor.9:25. Their Coach (Jesus) had died but rose again (resurrected) after 3 days, so that, He will give them a finest instructions to play as one of the best team ever and always. And the Coach after giving them assignments ascended to heaven, ‘He was at peace’. He knew that He was leaving behind the best “eleven players” capable of winning every game they play and even to win the entire world on their side. So that the world will know, “who is their Coach?” The simple answer is, “Jesus of Nazareth.” He only spent 3 years coaching His players, teaching them everything about the match and also about the spiritual game of life! Jesus trained to these eleven ordinary men, for it was “God’s Divine Plan”. There was no other team like them, very dedicated and committed to fulfill the task of their Coach. What would have been if the plan had failed? God didn’t allow the angels to play for them (preach the gospel). He didn’t leave signs written in heaven. God didn’t speak in loud voice which carried across the universe so that men would know His divine will. God’s entire plan was put into the hands of these eleven ordinary men, without human power, fearful, and doubting, but they are playing with the help of Coach’s empowerment of His Supernatural Power - the unseen coach to help them win the precious souls for Jesus – w.o.w (winning our world) to Jesus! Well, there is only one condition for joining this team; to be the child of the owner - God Himself. And the Bible tells us how to do it John 1:12, receiving Jesus in our life, and believing in Him. The object of this team is the most important one that has ever existed; to govern the universe. God is preparing the members of this team to play roles we have never even imagined. When you think of businessmen, kings, or governors that have thousands of people and projects in their hands…remember that they are nothing in comparison with the incredible business God has prepared for His team. Our decisions are transcendental, not only here on earth but in the visible and invisible universe. God’s team is the best and the most important team that will last forever. A team in which every member is essential and play on the same team like all brothers. Serving leaders with a serving attitude! Turn them into intelligent (wise) human beings. The team: 11 disciples like a soccer team: The final instructions given by Coach Jesus before His team starts to perform: ‘The fruit of a mentor is the character of the Disciples He forms’ Matt.7:17. “Send them - Go Forth to the World and Make Disciples of All Nations” Matt.28:18. Coach goal is – “This Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations and then the end will come” Matt.24:14. Would You Like to Be Part of - The Best Team of All Time? If Jesus asks you to recruit a gospel team of player to play for Him, what would be your answer? Let me tell you this, it is not too difficult to have a team, if you’re willing to play in His team. He already has given you the gifts and talents to be in His team to champion the world for Him! One can have a team of believers having a strong Christian character with dignity, who have the burden to win souls for the Lord. YES………….you can be one of the players to transform the world upside-down with the gospel of Christ Jesus!! - Pray for the World Cup CROWDS in Brazil - “Jesus Wept” for them! Blessings,

Rail fare hike difficult but correct decision: Jaitley “ ”
Stating that the choice before the government was to allow the railways to bleed and eventually walk into a debt trap or raise fares, Mr. Jaitley said, “India must decide whether it wants a world—class railway or a ramshackled one.
NEW DELHI, JuNE 21 (PTI): Defending the steep hike in rail fare and freight rates as a ‘difficult but correct decision’, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said the railways can survive only if users pay for availing of facilities. “The passenger services have been subsidised by the freight traffic. In recent years, even freight fares have come under pressure,” he said in his first reaction to the 14.2 per cent increase in passenger fares and 6.5 per cent hike in freight rates. Stating that the choice before the government was to allow the railways to bleed and eventually walk into a debt trap or raise fares, Mr. Jaitley said, “India must decide whether it wants a world—class railway or a ramshackled one. “The Railway Minister has taken a difficult but a correct decision...The Indian Railways for the last few years have been running at a loss. The only way that Railways can survive is when users pay for the facilities that they avail.” Mr. Jaitley, who will present the Union budget next month, said a lossmaking railway would provide below-par services and would eventually not even have the resources to meet its expenditure. In a Facebook posting titled ‘The Truth of Railway Fare Hike’, the minister said
the decision to increase the rates was mooted by the Railway Board on February 5, when the United Progressive Alliance was in power. The board proposed a 5 per cent increase in freight rates and a 10 per cent increase in passenger fares. The proposal was to rationalise freight rates with effect from April 1 and passenger fares with effect from May 1, he said. “Even as the Interim Budget of the Railways was yet to come, the date May 1, 2014, was chosen hoping that the general elections would be over by that day. The railways had proposed that this increase would give the railways an additional revenue of Rs 7,900 crore. “Armed with this decision, the then Railway Minister Shri Mallikarjuna Kharge met the then Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh on February 11, 2014. The then Prime Minister approved the hike and suggested that both freight and passenger fares should be implemented with effect from May 1, 2014, itself,” Mr. Jaitley said. The Railway Board, Jaitley said, accordingly notified this increase on May 16, when the election results were being declared. The decision gave effect “to what the Railway Board, the Rail Minister and the then Prime Minister had concurred.” However, Mr. Jaitley
Activists of Socialist Unity Center of India (SUCI) shout slogans from a police van after being detained during a protest against hike in rail fare, outside the Governor’s house in Kolkata on June 21. added, then Railway Minister Kharge “developed cold feet and in the evening of May 16, 2014, even after the UPA had been defeated in the elections, he countermanded the order of the Railway Board so that theo-
retically the decision taken by him and the then Prime Minister is implemented by the Railway Minister of the NDA government.” Mr. Jaitley said that by withdrawing the countermanding order, cur-
rent Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda has taken a challenging decision. “The choice before Shri Gowda was whether to allow the Railways to bleed and eventually walk into a debt trap by following the
policy of the UPA government or implement the decision which the UPA government had taken to increase the fares for both passenger and freight but did not have the courage to implement.”
Opposition parties slam rail fare hike, demand rollback NEW DELHI, JuNE 21 (agENcIEs): The decision of the Narendra Modi government to increase rail fares and freight charges has led to protests in several parts of the country. Congress workers held protests in the national capital on Saturday, with the police forced to use water cannons on them. They shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and burnt effigies of the leader. “We are not expecting a miracle to happen in such a short span of time, but if they cannot combat the prevailing inflation, they should not make it worse by taking such steps,” said Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely. “Before the elections they (BJP) were saying that good days are about to come, and as soon as they won, they started calling their steps as a bitter medicine,” he added. Samajwadi Party workers also took to streets in Varanasi and Allahabad. While they burnt the effigy of PM Modi in his constituency Varanasi, the SP workers brought a train to halt in Allahabad to protest the increased fares. Several opposition leaders, including BJP’s allies in Tamil Nadu, also slammed the move. DMK chief M Karunanidhi said that though BJP government promised to set right the “wrong precedents” of UPA government, its approach was no different from its predecessor’s on certain issues. He also referred to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa seeking a rollback of the hike and said that not just her, but all political parties had opposed the move. BJP’s Tamil Nadu allies, DMDK and MDMK, also sought a rollback of the fare revision. DMDK founder Vijayakant said that the rail fare hike “will further impact the poor”, and called for it to be rolled back. MDMK leader Vaiko also made a plea on the same grounds. CPI leader D Raja also condemned the Central government’s decision to hike rail fares and demanded an immediate rollback. “This is one of the strongest anti-people measures that government has unleashed. It shows the height of hypocrisy of BJP. BJP claims that it has a strong mandate. Strong mandate does not mean to take strong anti-people measures,” Raja said. BSP leader Satish Mishra said, “This is a huge burden on the common man, ‘bure din’ are going to come in the future. A rollback is needed. Freight charges have been increased too, it will result in inflation as well.” The government, however, continued to justify the rail fare hike and even blamed the UPA government for it. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the decision for the rail fare hike was taken by the UPA-II government. Condemning Congress for its 10-year-rule, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting said some steps needed to be taken to correct it. He also said people want security and good services. BJP leaders Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Siddharth Nath Singh also defended the rail fare hike, calling it a strong and effective measure to counter Congress’ failure. The government has increased rail passenger fares by 14.2 percent and freight rates by 6.5 percent, which has led to an outcry by the opposition parties.
Old wine, old bottle: Abducted Indians safe, in touch Why the Congress revamp is a dud
NEW DELHI, JuNE 21 (agENcIEs): As the Congress mulls changing leadership in Maharashtra, Assam and Haryana, the party doesn’t seem to have learnt any lessons from its mistakes. A golden opportunity to break away from the past seems to be lost on Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. The western state of Maharashtra has been with the Congress NCP combine for the past 15 years, but the near rout in the 2014 General Elections has forced the Congress to rethink its strategy. Congress managed only two from 17 while NCP could only retain four out of the eight seats they had won in 2009. The leadership issue has been pending in the state for over a year now. Initially Prithviraj Chavan was sent from Delhi in 2010 as the high command’s choice to quell infighting between various factions, but the inertia has carried on till now. So much so that legislators have been queuing up in Delhi to apprise senior leaders of how Chavan has not been able to instill any confidence in them. Despite the leadership being aware of being wiped away in Lok Sabha elections if no changes were made in Maharashtra, they did nothing except giving a patient hearing to potential candidates. Instead of moving away from the past and in keeping with their commitments made during most spirited speeches to their cadre, Congress seems to be closing in on former home minister Sushilkumar Shinde as its choice to
replace Chavan. The Gandhi loyalist is being projected because of his friendly relations with other political parties, especially the NCP. He will be used to try and break the grand coalition (Mahayuti) formed by the BJP Shiv Sena during the Lok Sabha elections. But the Congress easily forgets that Shinde has just lost his Solapur seat to the BJP by 1,49,381 votes. The same Shinde had won by 99,721 votes against Sharad Bansode in 2009. His daughter Praniti is a sitting legislator from Solapur Central, yet senior Shinde lost the assembly segment by 19,638 votes. What kind of confidence is he going to bring back into the party? By pushing for former chief minister Ashok Chavan as Maharashtra Congress president, the Congress wants to give a Maratha Dalit combination aided by minorities for the assembly election due in September this year. “There is talk of this in the media, but I have no knowledge about change of leadership,” counters Rajeev Satav, president Indian Youth Congress and MP from Maharashtra. “Party high command is competent to take these decisions and I’m sure senior leaders will keep the sentiments of party workers in mind.” Another headache for the high command is Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s critics within the party. Even though the Congress could retain only Rohtak seat from the nine out of 10 seats it held in 2009 from Haryana, Hooda seems to be
on course to finish his tenure with blessings from 10 Janpath. That has caused many a heartburn, especially with senior leader and fellow Jat, Choudhary Birendra Singh. There are murmurs that if Hooda is not replaces, then Singh may even jump ship to the BJP in the state. “These are all rumours being spread against our party leaders. Congress stands united and firm as a rock in Haryana and other states as well,” defends Randeep Singh Surjewala, national spokesperson Congress as he refused to be drawn into the leadership issue. Even if they do replace Hooda with a Singh or Kumari Selja, their problem still persists. “There is widespread criticism among party workers that same people get plum posts within the Congress,” says Tarit Prakash, director, Voters Mood Research. “The local units are ignored by the people in power. Once a leader is elected as an MLA or an MP, he or she stops visiting party office. They will come and meet the DM, SP and visit circuit houses, but will not sit in local party office,” he said. Tarun Gogoi too may be on his way out in Assam, as party observers will take feedback from MLA’s before taking a final decision. The rebel camp is being led by Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to replace Gogoi. Congress won only three while it had won seven out of 14 seats in 2009, which led to majority of the 76 MLA’s asking for Gogoi to make way. Though there are almost two years to go before the assembly election, the party is keen to end the leadership tussle in the state. Congress and Modi both may be at two different ends of the spectrum in terms of the political situation, but they find themselves in a similar position when it comes to taking tough decisions. Sonia and Rahul have seen their worst ever performance, so the situation cannot get any worse, while BJP’s simple majority in the lower House gives Modi sweeping powers to do as he likes. Yet the Congress seems to be running shy of taking hard decisions, opting for old wine in the same old bottle.
NEW DELHI, JuNE 21 (agENcIEs): One of the abducted Indian nationals who escaped from his captors in Mosul in Iraq has confirmed that the group of construction workers is “safe” and in touch with officials of the Indian Embassy in Baghdad, the External Affairs Ministry said on Friday. The man, who was able to break free from his captors in the city controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, is “having extensive briefing sessions” with Indian and Iraqi officials on the location and condition of those still in captivity, sources told The Hindu. Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said the government had moved 16 Indian workers out of the ISIS-controlled areas.
While eight of these workers were from the northern city of Baiji — where a fierce battle rages between ISIS rebels and Iraqi government forces — another eight were workers from the Lanco power project in the Sunni-dominated western prov-

would be extended through the Indian Community Welfare Fund in Iraq — set up by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs for the welfare of Indian workers in distress in foreign countries. The Fund has been operational at Indian missions in 17 emigration clearance required (ECR) countries — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Malaysia, Libya, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Syria, Lebanon, Thailand, and Iraq — since January 2009. The government was also working with the Iraqi authorities to resolve repatriation issues arising out of the Iraqi visa regime which mandates entry and exit of foreign nationals through the same ports.
Advani deserves to be President of India, Nitin says NEW DELHI, JuNE 21 (PTI): Union minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari has said party patriarch LK Advani deserves to be the President of India, a post commensurate with his stature. Appearing on Rajat Sharma’s show “Aap ki Adalat” on India TV, the Union road transport minister said it would not have been proper had he (Advani) been made the Lok Sabha Speaker as the party veteran has already been deputy prime minister. “Advaniji was deputy prime minister and it would not have
been proper had he been made the Speaker. Advaniji deserves to become the nation’s President,” Gadkari said, according to a press release issued by the channel. “All of us respect Advaniji and we want that he should get a post commensurate with his stature,” he said. Gadkari said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken a conscious decision not to induct ministers above the age of 75 years due to which some senior party leaders like Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi did not find a place in the Union Cabinet.
Comparing the party seniors with Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan who cannot play the role of a hero now as the generation has changed, the former BJP president said even he may be replaced ten years from now to make way for new people. He dismissed as media speculation reports that Joshi wanted to become deputy chairman of Planning Commission. “Joshiji is our thinktank, our senior leader. Our party will surely utilize his vast knowledge and experience,” he told the channel.
We’ll devise a new education policy: Irani
NEW DELHI, JuNE 21 (TNN): Nearly three decades after the last such exercise was undertaken, the Modi government will formulate a new national education policy “reflecting the aspirations of India now and opportunities in the next decade”, HRD minister Smriti Irani told TOI in an exclusive interview, her first to the English media after assuming office. Irani said the new policy will be put together after extensive consultations with all stakeholders. “It will be my endeavour to help India emerge as a knowledge-based economy,” she said. The current education policy was formulated by the Rajiv Gandhi government in 1986. The minister indicated that the government was proceeding with caution on the question of scrapping Delhi University’s controversial four-year undergraduate programme. “I see the role of MHRD if there is a blatant violation of law. I respect autonomy of institutions.
Any other comment at this stage from me will be inappropriate,” she said. Irani, however, reiterated the government’s intention to restructure the University Grants Commission, the country’s nodal agency for higher education, saying that promises made in the party’s manifesto “shall be kept”. The minister also sought to allay apprehensions that textbooks will be saffronized under the rightwing regime. “The President’s speech and PM’s resolve reflect what MHRD seeks to do,” she said on the issue. To question on how she would go about implementing the promise of setting up IITs in all states, the 38-year-old former actor said she intended to find a way through consultations. “I am aware of the challenges of existing IITs and IIMs,” the minister said, adding that she had set the ball rolling on consultations with IIT directors. “I will undertake a similar exercise with IIM directors,” she added.
9 Separatists dismiss Ukraine cease-fire 13 attackers shot dead in Xinjiang the morung express
DONETSK, JuNE 21 (AP): Pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine's embattled east have dismissed a unilateral cease-fire ordered by President Petro Poroshenko as fake, while nine Ukrainian service members were wounded in clashes just before and after the cease-fire began. Otherwise, no largescale fighting had been reported Saturday, the first full day of what is to be a six-and-a-half-day standdown by the Ukrainian military. Poroshenko ordered the cease-fire starting at 10 p.m. Friday as a first step in a peace plan he hopes will end a conflict that has left hundreds of people dead and weighed heavily on the country's economy. The plan includes an amnesty for fighters who lay down their arms, and a chance for them to leave the country. That is to be followed by local and parliamentary elections and a jobs program. The Kremlin — which had consistently demanded that Kiev be the first to cease fire — dismissed the plan, saying it sounded like an ultimatum and lacked any firm offer to open talks with insurgents. Separatist leaders have rejected the cease-fire and said they will not disarm. In Donetsk, a group of armed men gathered in the central square to take a military oath to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. near Slovyansk, scene of serious clashes over the past several months. "There is no cease-fire over there," Gubarev said. "There is shooting all the time, and this cease-fire that Poroshenko is talking about is just fake. The Ukrainian forces are either not under his control, or he is just a liar." Speaking to Russian reporters in Saudi Arabia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov lambasted Poroshenko's peace plan as "lacking the most important thing: an of-
fer to start a dialog." Poroshenko has always ruled out negotiations with those "who have blood on their hands." Lavrov also said that Moscow is concerned about what it described as a "build-up of military activity" in Ukraine, RIA Novosti reported. EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso lauded Poroshenko's peace plan and urged "all parties" to "actively promote its implementation." The Ukrainian Border Guard Service reported
overnight attacks on two border posts in the Donetsk region, which left three troops injured, hours after the cease-fire was announced. One of the posts, Vyselky, was attacked with mortar and sniper fire for half an hour, the border guards said. An attack on another border post, Izvaryne, immediately before the cease-fire left six men injured, the Border Guard Service said. Ukraine's Defense Ministry reported two attacks
on the quarters of a missile unit in the village of Avdiyivka. Kiev said men armed with automatic rifles and grenade launchers attacked the base at 11 p.m. — one hour after the cease-fire was announced — prompting the army to respond. The rebels left in the morning, the defense ministry said. The U.N. says 356 people have died in violence in Ukraine since May 7, and 34,000 have left their homes. The U.N. count did not include several recent
clashes and fighting before May 7. In Russia, President Vladimir Putin on Saturday ordered military forces in central Russia on combat alert as well as an exercise for airborne troops. The combat alert in the central military district, which encompasses the Volga region and the Ural mountains but not western Russia, will last until next Saturday and will involve 65,000 troops, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

SHANGHAI, JuNE 21 (REuTERS): Police shot dead 13 attackers in China's restive Xinjiang region after they rammed a car into a police station and detonated explosives, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday, in the latest of a series of attacks to worry Beijing. Xinjiang is the traditional home of Muslim Uighurs who speak a Turkic language, and China has blamed previous attacks on Islamist separatists it says seek to establish an independent state there called East Turkestan. Three police officers were "lightly wounded" in the attack on Saturday morning, but there were no casualties among the public, the news agency said citing the local government. "The gangsters drove a vehicle to ram the building of the public security bureau of Yecheng County in southern Xinjiang and set off explosives," it said. In 2012, seven attackers were shot dead after killing 13 people in a knife attack in Yecheng, also known by its Uighur name of Kargilik, a remote town on the road leading to China's mountainous border with Pakistan. China has been on edge since a suicide bombing last month killed 39 people at a market in Xinjiang's regional capital Urumqi. In March, 29 people were stabbed to death at a train station in the southwestern city of Kunming. The rise in violence has

prompted a crackdown on violent crime. Authorities in Xinjiang have arrested or tried dozens of suspects in recent weeks for spreading extremist propaganda, possessing banned weapons and other crimes. China also executed over a dozen people for terrorist attacks in the region earlier this month and three others for an attack on Beijing's central Tiananmen Square. The Restive West Resource-rich and strategically located on the borders of central Asia, Xinjiang has been plagued by violence for years, but exiled Uighur groups and human rights activists say the government's own repressive policies in Xinjiang have provoked unrest, something Beijing denies. Chinese President Xi Jinping said earlier this year that the Kashgar region, which sits in the far west of Xinjiang, is "the front line in anti-terrorism". The Silk Road city of Kashgar has been at the centre of much of the unrest in the region. Yecheng is in the Kashgar prefecture, and is more than 1,500 kilometres southwest of Urumqi. Chinese leaders have also been directing investment into Xinjiang. President Xi pledged last month to alleviate poverty and improve ethnic unity in the region, the most direct indication yet that China's leaders want to address the causes of violence in the area.
‘10.8 million Syrians Fidel’s former limos reborn as taxicabs need humanitarian aid’ uNITED NATIONS, JuNE 21 (AP): The humanitarian situation in Syria is worsening and the number of people needing urgent help has reached 10.8 million — almost half of Syria's population of 22 million, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday. Ban's monthly report to the U.N. Security Council said the current estimate of 3.5 million people living in areas that are difficult or impossible for humanitarian workers to reach is also likely to have increased to 4.7 million people. The U.N. chief painted a grim picture of a country gripped by severe levels of violence, including the intensified use of barrel bombs by government forces against civilian areas and suicide attacks, reported executions and other acts of terrorism by extremist groups. As a result, Ban said, the number of people in need has increased by 17 percent — from 9.3 million to 10.8 million. Ban said the rules that govern the conduct of war "are being flagrantly violated every day." "Efforts to expand humanitarian assis-
tance to those most in need have been met with continued delays and obstruction," he said. Currently, all U.N. aid must go through Damascus — a practice which U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos has repeatedly criticized. New procedures sealing government trucks delivering aid which were introduced in April resulted in fewer people being reached with aid in May, he said, and additional clearance requirements introduced by the government have further undermined access to people in desperate need of aid. By June 9, only 12 percent of the 4.25 million people the U.N. World Food Program planned to provide with food had been reached compared to 26 percent at the same time in April, Ban said. The secretary-general decried the government's obstruction of the delivery of medicine and medical supplies, saying "it is inhumane and unlawful" that these potentially life-saving items continue to be removed from World Health Organization convoys entering opposition-controlled areas. As a result, he said, opposition-controlled areas re-
ceived only 25 percent of the quantities distributed in the first three months of 2014. "Tens of thousands of civilians are being arbitrarily denied urgent and lifesaving medical care" which Ban called "a deliberate tactic of war aimed at denying help and support to those most in need." Ban said Physicians for Human Rights reported that 29 medical personnel were killed in May, "the highest number in a month since the start of the conflict." He said 27 were killed by government forces and two by opposition groups, bringing the total recorded deaths of medical personnel in the war to 502. The secretary-general said the U.N. is unable to provide an assessment of the presence and activities of foreign fighters in Syria. But he said the recent advance of alQaida-inspired Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is expected to have an impact on Syria's eastern regions "and may strengthen the presence of extremist groups in (ISIL) controlled areas of Syria." The Security Council approved a resolution in February demanding that all sides in the Syrian conflict allow immediate access for aid, but as Ban's latest report indicates, the situation has worsened.
HAVANA, JuNE 21 (AP): In a former life they were the "comandante's" cars: A fleet of black, boxy, Sovietmade limousines that for years were at the disposal of the presidency in Fidel Castro's Cuba. Today the limos have been decommissioned and repurposed as Havana taxi cabs, at the service of tourists who want a little slice of history to go with their ride across town. "When I tell (travelers) where the car came from, they sit in the seat back there and ... stretch their legs and say, 'I can't believe it!'" said Moises Suarez, 58, who has been behind the wheel of one of the ex-presidential limos for the last three years. The luxury automobiles were produced by Russian manufacturers GAZ and ZIL in the 1960s and '70s. Those sent to Cuba reportedly included a ZIL-111 convertible model that was the first of its kind to roll off the assembly line, a personal gift to Castro from Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. They were often used to ferry around visiting dignitaries. At least one of the limos was used occasionally by Castro himself, though he usually preferred a military-style jeep for his own

transportation needs. When former U.S. President Jimmy Carter paid a historic visit in 2002, Castro — who always had a flair for stagemanship — picked him up at the airport in a Soviet stretch despite the fact that by that time the presidency had acquired a fleet of slick Mercedes Benzes. Suarez, who drives for stateowned Cubataxi, said about 14 of the cars passed into the hands of the company about five years ago, and 10 are still on the road.
Many aspects of his GAZ-built Chaika — Russian for "seagull" — are original, from the camel-colored headliner to the radio with its buttons and knobs labeled in Cyrillic lettering. At some point a Mercedes engine was swapped in, however, similar to the way that 1950s Detroit classics in Havana are still running thanks to makeshift monkeywrenching. On the driver's-side door, Suarez has affixed a small sign that says "Smile,
Jesus loves you" — a small irony for a country that was officially atheist for decades under Castro (the policy was removed from the constitution in the 1990s). The limo seats six passengers in relative comfort. But despite the extra leg room, it can hardly be considered a luxury ride anymore. The faux wooden inlay is chipped and peeling, and the faded, brown-floral upholstery emits a smell best described as musty with perhaps a hint of stale cigar.
Still, it's a novel way to cruise down the seaside Malecon boulevard or through Revolution Plaza, where a massive sculpture of Argentineborn revolutionary leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara gazes stone-faced from the side of a building. Suarez said fares are negotiable, from just a few bucks for a quick trip to $100-$140 for an all-day road trip outside the capital. On a recent morning, a group of Spanish tourists took turns having their photo taken next to and inside the car as it sat parked beneath the massive, pyramidal monument honoring Cuban independence hero Jose Marti. "It's exciting to be able to get inside a historic piece of Cuba," said Miquel Torres, who was visiting from Barcelona. "It's a very different kind of car." As Suarez drives through the city, heads turn constantly. Not only tourists but also Cubans, who instantly recognize it as one of Fidel's fleet. "A lot of drivers pull up next to me at stoplights," Suarez said. "They start laughing and they say, 'You never imagined you would be driving the comandante's car, eh?' 'You have a great car in your hands."

Kate Moss’ husband has ‘separation anxiety’
K
ate Moss' husband Jamie Hince gets ''separation anxiety'' when he's away from his wife and their dog Archie for too long. Jamie Hince, who married the supermodel in 2011, hates being away from his spouse when he has to go on tour with his rock band The Kills or when she's jetting around the globe for modelling jobs. He is quoted by the Daily Mirror newspaper as saying ''My wife is very much my sidekick, so I tend to get separation anxiety when I'm away from her.'' Jamie, 45, insists the hardest part of touring with his band is missing his family and he can't bear to be away from Kate, 40, and their pet dog Archie for too long. Speak-
ing about the beloved pooch, he gushed ''He came from the deepest, wildest countryside in Italy. He was almost feral. I should've gotten a shelter dog, I know. But Archie was born, he was there and he needed me, so I adopted him.'' However, as well as missing his family when he's away on music commitments, Paul admits he's also in a lot of pain with his hand after a brutal hand injury threatened to end his guitar-playing. Jamie - who had to completely retrain himself to play his prized instrument - explained ''It's taken its toll on my other fingers and I'm in pain quite a lot after shows. That's my least favourite part of touring now - the physical pain, and missing my family.''

World Cup of big surprises smiles on Americas RIO DE JANEIRO, JuNE 21 (AP): The World Cup of surprises is turning into a sweet samba party for teams from the Americas. Having already stunned one former world champion, little Costa Rica shocked another on Friday and sent a third one home. Then the French exploded with five goals against their Swiss neighbors. In the evening game, Ecuador downed Honduras 2-1. The story so far: Two European powers — Spain and England — are out of contention after just two games. European teams have played eight teams from the Americas and won just twice. The nine teams from Africa and Asia have contrived to win just one game between them. But for teams from the Americas, their record as of Friday against nations from other regions: played 12, lost just two. Ole! In short, the new world is embarrassing the old one. None of the previous seven World Cups in the Americas were won by teams outside Latin America. On current evidence, this one looks increasingly unlikely to be the exception. Although the score was just 1-0, Costa Rica was a convincing winner Friday over four-time champion Italy in the coastal city of Recife. Having also won its first match, 3-1, against twotime winner Uruguay, Costa Rica is now guaranteed a spot in the knockout stage. Costa Rica's win also killed off England's faint hopes of advancing. Italy and Uruguay will play each other Tuesday to determine
which of them joins Costa Rica in advancing from Group D and which will join 1966 champion England and 2010 winner Spain in phoning their travel agents. Costa Rica, with just 5 million people, was seen as the easy opponent in the group — the first ever with three former world champions. Instead, the Ticos have looked the hungriest team of the four, and are already preparing for a knockout game. The only two European nations to have beaten Americas teams so far in Brazil are France and Switzerland, which overcame Honduras and Ecuador, respectively, in their first Group E matches. On Friday, France and Switzerland played each other in Salvador, also on the coast. The French were rampant winners, 5-2, all but guaranteeing they, too, will advance to the last 16 for only the second time since they won the title in 1998. Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld tipped France to go "very far in this tournament" after it shredded his team's defenses and reputation as tough to break down. Five different players scored for France. If it stays on top of Group E, it will likely face Iran, Nigeria or Bosnia in the last 16. They should all be manageable opponents for the talented French who are rebuilding their reputation ruined by a training ground strike by players at the last World Cup. Friday marked the fourth anniversary of that debacle in South Africa. Attackers Olivier Giroud and Karim Benzema each
scored one goal and created another against the Swiss. Benzema went 15 games without scoring for France in 2012-2013. He now is among just four players to have three goals in Brazil. "Karim is confirming that he's in very, very good form. He's in great shape athletically," said France coach Didier Deschamps. "Having such an efficient player is very important in a competition like this." The outcome of Group E remains undecided even after Honduras' loss in Curitiba to Ecuador, its second defeat of the tournament. France, with two wins and most goals scored and fewest allowed, is best placed to go through. Costa Rica had never beaten Uruguay in eight previous attempts or Italy in their only meeting in 1994. If it beats England in the teams' first-ever encounter next Tuesday, Costa Rica will complete a hat-trick of victories over those former champions with seven World Cup titles between them. Their victory over the Italians was no fluke. Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon made several diving saves. But he couldn't reach Bryan Ruiz's pinpoint header in the 44th minute off Junior Diaz's long, curling cross from the left. Costa Rica ground to a standstill as government employees took the day off to watch the game and many schools shut down shortly after the victory to allow children to join celebrations. Crowds shouting: "Yes, we did it!" blocked streets of downtown San Jose, the capital.

RECIFE, JuNE 21 (AP): Had Costa Rica been a less resilient team, it might still be stewing over referee Enrique Osses' refusal to award a penalty when explosive striker Joel Campbell was taken down in the area. Instead, the Ticos mounted another of their numerous raids on Italy's defense, scoring a minute later when Bryan Ruiz headed home Junior Diaz's long, curling cross from the left wing. Playing confidently and attacking relentlessly, Costa Rica seized control of Group D and clinched a place in the knockout round of the World Cup with a 1-0 victory over four-time champion Italy. "The first objective we
have already achieved, and now let's see," Ruiz said of the Costa Rica's assured place in the Round of 16. "Of course, we want to go forward, as far as possible." The triumph might have been more lopsided if not for Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who made several diving saves. Entering the tournament as the second-place team in CONCACAF qualifying, behind the United States, the Costa Ricans were apparently the weakest team in a group featuring former World Cup champions Italy, Uruguay and England. Not anymore. They've reached the second round for the first time since 1990 and can top the group with a
draw or better against England, which was knocked out of contention because of Friday's result. "Today is a very special moment for us," Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto said. "We knew that today we could make history for Costa Rica and we've been able to do so. "I've told my team we have to keep calm. We're here and we want to stay," Pinto added. "It's not going to be easy. A World Cup is never easy." The gravity of the victory for the small Central American nation was evident in the way several players reacted to the final whistle by collapsing to the turf the way tennis players often do after winning Grand Slam
titles. Nearly an hour after the match, when team captain Ruiz accepted the player of the match award, Costa Rican fans could be heard still celebrating just outside the stadium. Meanwhile, players began to receive photos on their smartphones of celebrating fans in the streets in the Costa Rican capital, San Jose, and beyond. "Maybe we hadn't realized how important this victory was after the match, but now we do," Ruiz said. "Thank you to the fans who have supported us all along, and those who haven't supported us maybe believe in us right now." Costa Rica entered its match against the Azzurri exuding confidence after
opening with a surprising 3-1 comeback victory over Uruguay, a semifinalist in 2010. But Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, who nearly led Liverpool to an English Premier League title this past season, missed that game and there were some questions about how Costa Rica would handle one of the traditional powers at full strength. By the fulltime whistle, Costa Rica had matched Italy in shots with 10 and shots on goal with six, despite having only 42 percent of possession. "It's been a great triumph, but on the other hand, all the team was convinced this was possible," Ruiz said. "After we won against Uruguay, we were really motivated."
England has no case for the defense Cancer-recovering physio who got Suarez fit
RIO DE JANEIRO, JuNE 21 (AP): No excuses. No one to blame but themselves. Feeble defending has sent England home from the World Cup. Costa Rica's surprise 1-0 win over Italy on Friday meant that England made its most humiliating exit from a World Cup since 1958, following consecutive defeats by the Italians and then Uruguay in Group D. Back in the 1950s, millions of pounds (dollars) weren't spent on preparing the team, and the players weren't supported by more than 50 staff members — as the 2014 squad are in Brazil. Pampered in Miami before heading to a beachside base in Rio de Janeiro after squad grumblings about the isolated South Africa HQ in 2010, the Football Association's preparations were meticulous. Everything the defending wasn't in Brazil. "We maybe should have accepted that going for a point might have been the best option," captain Steve Gerrard said after Thursday's 2-1 loss to Uruguay. Whether the England defense was up to grinding out a draw is questionable with the defenders at Roy Hodgson's disposal. Although, given the backto-back lapses against Italy and Uruguay, maybe England just doesn't have international quality defenders anymore. Going back to Bobby Moore, England's World Cup wining captain in 1966, solid center backs formed the bedrock of the team, with Terry Butcher, Tony Adams and Rio Ferdinand filling the position in later years. Phil Jagielka (Everton) and Gary Cahill (Chelsea) play for teams which finished in the top five last season and appeared to have forged a solid international partnership, not losing any of their 13 internationals together before the World Cup. But they struggled to

adapt to the most testing of football occasions, leaving England exposed too often in front of goal against Italy and Uruguay for four goals. Mario Balotelli evaded Cahill with ease at the far post to head in Italy's winner on Saturday. England didn't learn against Uruguay, with Cahill failing to close down Edinson Cavani before he chipped the ball to Luis Suarez, who shook off Jagielka and headed home. "They were sloppy goals (to concede) and we have to take responsibility for that as a team," said Gerrard, who inadvertently flicked the ball on for Suarez's second. England was desperately lacking the leadership of John Terry marshalling the back four. Even at 33, Terry regained his form and his place into the Chelsea team, but turned his back on England in 2012 before being found guilty by the FA of racially abusing an opponent in a Premier League
match. The only sight of Terry wearing the Three Lions jersey on Thursday was the picture he uploaded ahead of the Uruguay match on Instagram, wishing the team luck. "When players retire, we move on," was Hodgson's message ahead of the World Cup. However, the center backs aren't the only ones to have looked shaky. Full backs have been able to break forward but less adept defending. Antonio Candreva swept past left back Leighton Baines with ease before providing the cross Balotelli scored from on Saturday. Hodgson overlooked the more experienced Ashley Cole for the tournament, with the Chelsea defender rejecting a chance to be on the standby list after Luke Shaw was selected as Baines' cover. It's unclear why the promising 18-year-old Southampton player was brought to Brazil since he hasn't featured in either game. "I don't think we have
given up too many chances in the two games, but when we have, we have been punished," Baines said. "The tournament has been a bit like that. There have been a lot of goals so far and we'll have to look at it in the next couple of days." Although Glen Johnson set up Wayne Rooney's first World Cup goal in the Uruguay match, the right back's work in defense has been a constant concern over the last month with the lack of adequate cover. For all England's occasional flashes of pace and creativity at the front, predominately against Italy, the team always looked too fragile at the back. Not that Hodgson's tactics were faultless. Pushing Raheem Sterling to the left flank against Uruguay having been so dynamic in the No. 10 playmaker role against Italy, allowed Rooney to return to his favored central position but meant the Liverpool player's impact was more limited.
SAO PAuLO, JuNE 21 (AP): The most important figure in Uruguay's victory against England on Thursday didn't score any goals or provide any assists. His name is Walter Ferreira. He's the 62-year-old physiotherapist for the Uruguayan national team and he has spent the last month working on Luis Suarez's left knee. In Uruguay, they call him the "miracle man". After scoring the first of his two goals in the 2-1 win against England at Sao Paulo's Arena Corinthians stadium, Suarez made straight for the Uruguayan bench. He sought out Ferreira, embraced him and signaling to the crowd he urged them to appreciate his importance. Suarez was especially grateful to Ferreira, to whom he expressed heartfelt thanks, when speaking to reporters after the game. Later he repeated his gratitude in a YouTube video, recorded in the Uruguayan changing room. "There are people who know how crucial it was for me to have their support. If it wasn't for him (Ferreira) I would not have been here today," said Suarez, who despite suffering from cramp in the later stages, scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute. "I cried a lot with him, because it was such a hard time, and complicated because of what he was living through as well, he made a sacrifice to remain with me the whole time," Suarez added. When Suarez mentions it was a hard time for Ferreira, he knows what he is talking about, because the physiotherapist dedicated himself to the player, despite suffering from non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer. Ferreira completed his chemotherapy treatment just before the World Cup began. "While my wife and my two sons are the most important things in the world to me, now this man is too, because of everything he
did to aid my recovery, because 90% of this is the work of Walter Ferreira," said Suarez, Uruguay's leading goal scorer of all time, who on May 22 underwent surgery on the meniscus on his left knee. Following surgery, there were fears that Suarez would be unable to play in the World Cup. But the Liverpool striker was not going to miss the tournament and despite the doubting voices, he returned to competitive action, just 28 days after the operation. Ferreira was the key. In the first days after surgery, since Suarez was unable to walk, Ferreira travelled daily to the footballer's home. In no time, he convinced Suárez to abandon the crutches and start walking.
The rest of the exercises and massage treatments were done at Ferreira's house, with Suarez's wife Sofia responsible for driving him there and back from their Montevideo home. Ferreira completed his last chemotherapy session 21 days ago, a little before leaving for Brazil, Carmen, the physiotherapist's wife, told the Associated Press. And he has been in Brazil since, in Sete Lagoas, the Uruguay base, caring for Suarez. "The doctors gave him permission to travel because the tests showed all was ok, even though he still had a slightly low white blood cell count," said Ferreira's wife. "But they told him to go to the Cup and that it would do him good,
because his work is what gives him the most pleasure. He left fearful and with a huge case of medicine, but thankfully his white blood cell counts are rising." "The praise for what happened against England is two-fold, for Luisito and for Walter too, because they achieved it together," said Mrs Ferreira. Suarez was ecstatic at the end of the game and recalled that the English head coach Roy Hodgson had said before the game that they would be facing an opponent who was not in peak physical condition. "For those who doubted that I would be 50% fit, I had to show them in this match, and there was the answer, this gives me the courage to go forward," he said.

SALVADOR, June 21 (AP): France is striking at the World Cup again, this time in a way the fans back home will approve of. Four years ago to the day, France's players shamed the nation by going on strike at the last World Cup. On Friday, the team put on a striking attacking display, blowing Switzerland away with a 5-2 win on Friday to take total control of Group E and put themselves in position to avoid a showdown with Lionel Messi's Argentina in the next round. "We were all magnificent tonight," said goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, one of only four holdovers from the shambles of France's last World Cup. "We can't let ourselves get flooded by emotion and must stay calm. But we're going to savor this." Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud and winger Mathieu Valbuena alls scored one goal and created another to underline both the newfound team spirit in this team and the lethal versatility in attack. "When you score five goals, it's ecstasy," Valbuena said. France tops the group with six points, with Ecuador level on three points with Switzerland after beating Honduras 2-1 Friday. "It was a great night for us. We hurt them with our quick attacks and with the variety of our play," France coach Didier Deschamps said. Giroud and Blasie Matuidi scored a minute apart and Valbuena added another before halftime. Benzema made up for a first-half penalty miss with a poacher's finish in the 67th, and then turned provider for Moussa Sissoko, who made it 5-0 in the 73rd. "Karim is confirming

that he's in very, very good form," Deschamps said." He's in great shape athletically." Switzerland pulled two consolation goals back as Blerim Dzemaili scored with a free kick in the 81st and Granit Xhaka slotted in the second in the 87th. Benzema thought he had scored his second — and the goal of the night — but his curling, first-time strike was ruled out because Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers blew his whistle for full time just seconds before the shot. "I didn't hear the
whistle," he said. Friday marked the fourth anniversary of France's infamous World Cup training ground strike four years ago in South Africa, when the players shamed a nation back home. How different things look from 2010. "We have to carry on this way and to keep this strength, this irreproachable team spirit we have," Valbuena said. France has scored eight goals in two games in the tournament and Benzema could even afford to miss
a penalty. "It's a huge satisfaction within the team but we're not going to get carried away," Deschamps said. "We shouldn't think we're prettier than we are." Switzerland's demise came rapidly, after center half Steve Von Bergen came off with blood pouring down from under his left eye after Giroud kicked him in the face in the sixth minute. He was replaced by Philippe Senderos and things went from bad to awful from then on for a makeshift defense against the
ferocious pace of France's breaks from midfield and the slick movement of its interchanging forwards. "They can go very far in this tournament," Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said through a translator. "We have seen France's potential. They had an explosion of power." Deschamps had dropped midfielder Paul Pogba, who was lucky not to be sent off against Honduras for aiming a wild kick at Wilson Palacios, warning him that he needs to control his temper better.
Massa puts Williams on pole in Austria ineffective vs. costa rica, italy needs changes
SPIeLBeRG , June 21 (ReuTeRS): Brazilian Felipe Massa seized his first Formula One pole position since 2008 as a resurgent Williams swept the front row of the starting grid on Saturday in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. Finnish teammate Valtteri Bottas took second place for the Mercedes-powered former world champions with championship leader Nico Rosberg third fastest for Mercedes. It was the first time this season that dominant Mercedes had not taken pole and the race will see Williams' first start from the front of the grid since Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado in Spain in 2012. "Williams are back to the top, they are back to fight. I am pleased for me and the team as well," declared an
emotional Massa whose last pole was with Ferrari at his home grand prix before finishing that season as runner-up. "After a long time I hope this is just the beginning of great possibilities. I hope to be in this position again," added the Brazilian who suffered near-fatal head injuries in a freak accident in Hungary in 2009. Britain's Lewis Hamilton, Rosberg's team mate and closest championship rival who is 22 points behind the German after seven races, had a nightmare session. The 2008 world champion will start ninth after his first flying lap of the revamped Red Bull Ring was disallowed because he exceeded track limits and he then spun on his final attempt. Red Bull's quadruple world champion
Sebastian Vettel fared even worse, qualifying 13th at what counts as a home circuit for the team. "I'm not happy, let's put it that way," said the German. "I think anything is possible tomorrow but surely we are not as quick as we'd like to be." Australian team mate Daniel Ricciardo, winner of the previous race in Canada, qualified ahead of Vettel yet again and will start fifth, behind Ferrari's Fernando Alonso. The last time two Williams drivers lined up together on the front row was in Germany 11 years ago - the year Austria was last on the calendar. "I am so happy with what has happened today, with us, our team, it was such a great moment. It is a long time since I last had a pole position," Massa told reporters.

ReCIFe, June 21 (AP): Italy coach Cesare Prandelli once remarked that he dreamed of winning the World Cup by using seven different formations in seven matches. Well, maybe now is the time to head back to the drawing board. Prandelli's 4-1-4-1 proved ineffective in a 1-0 loss to Costa Rica on Friday and now the Azzurri need a win or a draw against Uruguay on Tuesday to reach the second round. Italy's chances were essentially reduced to two opportunities for Mario Balotelli late in the first half. Otherwise, the Azzurri struggled to set up their center forward — even when Prandelli added three more attackers — Antonio Cassano, Lorenzo Insigne and Alessio Cerci — in the second half. "The three attacking players I added didn't help," Prandelli said. "Balotelli moved well in the first half but in the second half we didn't have anyone to set him up." Ciro Immobile, the striker who led Serie A with 22 goals — none of them penalties — could provide another option in attack against Uruguay, the team Italy beat in a penalty shootout in the third-place
match of last year's Confederations Cup. "We've played an even match with our next opponent, and we can do that again in this do-or-die game," the coach said. Prandelli had been waging a battle for FIFA to allow water breaks during Italy's matches and was again denied for this game. The temperature at the Arena Pernambuco was 29 C (84 F), with 70 percent humidity according to FIFA, well below the 32 C thresh-hold for breaks. "The American squads are in better shape, they're more reactive," Prandelli said. "But it wasn't the heat that affected us. We have no more excuses. We've known about the climate and the schedule for ages." Midfielder Daniele De Rossi was limping after the game due to a right calf muscle problem and Prandelli acknowledged that 35-year-old playmaker Andrea Pirlo was fatigued. Perhaps that was because Costa Rica paid so much attention to Italy's creative wizard. "We covered Pirlo throughout the match," Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto said. "We blocked his initiatives."
Virat kohli loses number one spot in oDi rankings
C M Y K
DuBAI, June 21 (PTI): India`s batting sensation Virat Kohli`s decision to skip the recently concluded three-match series against Bangladesh has seen him lose the number one spot to South Africa`s A B de Villiers in the latest ICC ODI rankings issued on Friday. Kohli was leading de Villiers by nine ratings points in the natting chart, but since a player loses one per cent of his rating for missing every match the Indian batsman has dropped a total of 13 points to now trail the South African stroke-maker by four ratings points. De Villiers is also at the top of the batting table in the Test batsmen list, while Kohli is at the 10th position. However, all this could change over the next couple of months depending on how de Villiers performs in Sri Lanka and Kohli performs in England. Like Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have also lost ground for opting to rest from the tour. Dhawan is now 10th after slipping two places, while Sharma has fallen out of the top 20 to be at 23rd position. However, Suresh Raina, who captained India in Bangladesh, has moved up two places to 27th. In the ODI bowlers` chart, both Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin have lost two places, to be at seventh and 17th spots, respectively. However, pacer Umesh Yadav has jumped eight places to claim 78th position, while Stuart Binny, who returned figures of 4.4-2-4-6 in the second ODI, has gained 23 places and is now at 206th spot. Jadeja, meanwhile, has retained his fourth place in the ODI all-rounders` list, which is headed by Mohammad Hafeez of Pakistan. In the team rankings, there is no change to the pre-series rankings of India. India are on equal points with Sri Lanka (112 ratings points) but are ranked behind the Island nation in third place when ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.
