‘Coffee can reduce suicide risk by half’

lONDON, July 27 (IANs): A study has suggested having two to four cups of coffee every day can reduce the risk of suicide among men and women by 50 per cent. The finding was reached after researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health reviewed data from three previous US studies. They found that the risk of suicide amongst adults, drinking several cups of caffeinated coffee on a daily basis, was about half compared to those who drank decaffeinated coffee, very little coffee or no coffee at all, Daily Mail reported.

GuwAhAtI, July 27 (ptI): A television journalist has alleged that she was subjected to verbal abuse at a public place by a motorcycle-borne youth while she was on her way to an assignment. The city-based journalist, who works for ‘Aajtak’ channel, on Saturday said the incident occurred on Thursday and she has lodged a complaint in Dispur police station in this regard. “The unfortunate incident happened to me while I was on way to attend a press conference. A motorcycle-borne youth zoomed in front of my vehicle and was about to ram into it, but my husband who was driving the car somehow stopped the car, averting a possible collision.” The youth then stopped his two-wheeler in front of the car and allegedly charged towards her in an ‘aggressive way’ and attempted to intimidate her with abusive words. “If a lady reporter can be humiliated, abused and intimidated in daylight in the centre of the city and the police arrive late, one can well understand the fate of women moving on the streets of Guwahati,” she said. When contacted the police confirmed receipt of the complaint and said none was arrested so far. Investigation in the incident was on.

In June this year, citizens of Bhopal enthusiastically took part in a Mud Car Rally Challenge. Winners had the opportunity to bag up to Rs. 50,000. No such luck for residents of Dimapur, Nagaland, who are subject to numerous such mud car rallies. Slight rain converts the dry rugged terrain that is Purana Bazar on NH 29 into a challenge without a prize. Right after the Nagaland State Assembly Election, politicians were enthusiastic about sleeping on roads if they did not qualify certain standards. Alas, it will no more be possible to sleep on these roads of the economically strategic town of Dimapur. People on two-wheelers suffer the most riding through, with footwear slipping into the highway puddle’s depths, notes citizen journalist Avika Yepthomi. Cars and autorickshaw drivers face unique challenges as they have to face knee-deep sludge to push their cars out. Parts of Purana Bazar remain infested with roadside garbage dumps that the highway river takes with it and spreads. Shops shudder to up their shutters; filth, disease and discomfort are more arterial than the State Government’s development yarn. (Photo by Avika Yepthomi)

one arrested for abducting minor

DImApuR, JuNE 27 (mExN): A 45 year-old man was arrested on July 26 for allegedly kidnapping a sixteen-year-old Naga girl. The accused identified as Ramjan Ali, a construction worker by profession, and hailing from Sonitpur, Assam had abducted the girl with the intention of selling her. According to the Women Cell, Dimapur, a complaint of a girl missing from

4th Mile, Dimapur was received on July 25. But the case took a twist when the girl returned home the day police received the complaint. It later emerged that the girl was lured by Ali with promise of a better life and abducted her. Women Cell, quoting Ali’s statement said that the girl was taken to Tezpur on July 24 by Ali where he planned to sell her to a pro-

spective groom. However, his plan was foiled when he could not find any takers. The person who had earlier agreed to buy the girl reportedly backed out of the deal. With the deal not going as planned, Ali brought the girl back to Dimapur the next day on July 25. Meanwhile, in Dimapur, police, after receiving the complaint started inquiring on the matter. Ali was

arrested on July 26 after it emerged that the girl was abducted. It was further revealed that the girl was staying in the residence of Ali’s employers before she went missing. Along with his construction work, Ali also worked as a house help in the residence where he got in touch with the girl, Women Cell said.

In many of these areas, particularly in the state of Nagaland, the VGs are the only state forces guarding the porous IB with Myanmar, the report said. The Commissioner, Nagaland, is the head of the VG organization and is designated as the Commandant General Village Guards Nagaland. It is in this connection that the affairs of the VGs are looked after by the office of the Commissioner Nagaland at the directorate level, whereas, at the state government level (Secretariat), the VG organization comes under the home department.

Village Guards (VG) of Nagaland today stand at a strength of 9579. They are spread across the districts of Tuensang, Mon, Kiphire, Longleng and Meluri sub division of Phek district in 318 VG posts. The Village Guards started with 300 Nagas on March 1, 1957 at Pangsha Village under the present Noklak Sub Division in Tuensang district. The VGs are mostly peasants and their service is purely voluntary in nature. But the functions they perform are equivalent, if not more, to that of the regular police forces. According to the an-

nual administrative report of the state’s home department 2012-13 tabled by Home Minister G. Kaito Aye at the just concluded assembly session here, the VGs played a very prominent roles in antiinsurgency operations between late 1950s and early 1980s, and they are still playing an important part in keeping law and order in remote border villages where there are almost no regular police or para military forces. Since their inception, the VGs have been playing “valid roles” in ensuring the security and integrity of the state and the country, according to the report. ImphAl, July 27 (mExN): The Citizens Concern for Dams and Development (CCDD) and the Committee on the Protection of Natural Resources in Manipur (CPNRM) have welcomed the rejection of “Forest Clearance” for the proposed 1500 MW proposed Tipaimukh Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project by the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) of the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), Government of India in its meeting on July 11-12, 2013. This has established that the “Environment Clearance” accorded to the proposed project on October 24, 2008 was based on “wrong information” and

“without any holistic and participatory impact assessment and non-recognition of peoples’ rights over their land,” stated a press note released by Chairperson of CCDD, Dr. RK Ranjan, signed by its Joint Secretary, Jiten Yumnam. The CCDD and CPNRM have urged the MoEF and the Government of India to respect the recommendations of the FAC on Tipaimukh Dam and not accord “Forest Clearance”, as well as revoke the “Environment Clearance” given to the project. “The rejection of forest clearance by FAC has proven that the Government of Manipur and dam building companies pursued destructive forms of development in Manipur

with no care for the environment, forest, land and peoples to be affected,” stated the press note. The two organizations have asked the Government of Manipur to embark on an alternative model of power generation in Manipur based on the “needs, wishes and aspiration of the people” and to “minimize impacts on environment.” The recommendations of world commission on dams, 2000 and provision of UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, 2007 should be respected while pursuing mega dams and other destructive and unsustainable forms of development in Manipur, the organizations maintained.

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 27 (REutERs): Pope Francis urged young people to change a world where food is discarded while millions go hungry, where racism and violence still affront human dignity and where politics is more associated with corruption than service. Francis, on the fifth day of his first trip abroad since his election in March, went to Rio’s Copacabana beach to preside at a “Way of the Cross” service commemorating Jesus’ final hours as part of an international jamboree of Catholic youth, known as World Youth Day. In his address, Francis used the analogy of the suffering Jesus to ask the young people to ease the sufferings of the world. He used the theme to address issues ranging from hunger and crime to an oblique reference to the child sex abuse scandal that has roiled the Roman Catholic Church in recent years. Francis spoke of “the silence of the victims of violence, those who can no longer cry out, especially the innocent and the defenseless.” He said Jesus was united with families whose children were victims of violence and drug addiction. “Jesus is united with every person who suffers from hunger in a world where tons of food are thrown out each day ... with those who are persecuted for their re-

ligion, for their beliefs or simply for the color of their skin,” he said. In a reference to the sex abuse scandal, he spoke of “young people who have lost faith in the Church, or even in God because of the counter-witness of Christians and ministers of the gospel.” Since his election in March, the pope has taken strong stands in defense of the environment and has several times said that financial speculation and corruption were keeping millions of people in hunger. “So many young people have lost faith in political institutions, because they see in them only selfishness and corruption,” Francis said. Last month, Brazil, Latin America’s largest nation, was rocked by massive protests against corruption, the misuse of public money and the high cost of living. Most of the protesters were young. “The suffering of Christ is keenly felt here,” the pope said, asking the young people to step outside of themselves and not wash their hands of society’s many problems like Pontius Pilate washed his hands of Jesus’ fate in the gospel. It was the second time in as many days that the

pope urged young people to exploit their drive and energy to change things. During a visit to a Rio slum on Thursday, he urged them to not lose trust and not allow their hopes to be extinguished. Many young people in Brazil saw this as his support for peaceful demonstrations to bring about change. At the slum, he issued the first social manifesto of his young pontificate, saying that the world’s rich must do much more to wipe out vast inequalities between the haves and the have-nots. The first Latin American pope is clearly relishing the enthusiasm at a time when the Church, which once was an unrivalled religious bastion on the continent, is grappling to hold onto faithful. On Friday, he took on the role of a simple priest and heard confessions of young people. Later, he visited the archbishop’s residence, where he again showed his personal touch by lunching with youth and meeting juvenile inmates. The final, climatic event of World Youth Day is Sunday, when Francis presides at a closing Mass before returning to Rome that evening.

process, the CM said, and stressed on the need to update “our knowledge.” Rio congratulated the children of Late Rev. Dr. Neiliezhü Üsou for establishing a school in his memory. He was optimistic that the school will impart quality education and mould young minds “to make our society a vibrant society.” Rio said that he was touched by the unity and commitment of Rev. Dr. Neiliezhü Üsou’s family. Congratulating the recipients of Rev. Dr. Neiliezhü Üsou Music Award that was given during the function to the highest scorer in music in the HSLC examination 2013 conducted by NBSE,

Rio maintained that such awards will be a source of challenge for students to achieve excellence and aim for higher goals. Rio described Rev. Dr. Neiliezhü Üsou as a man of God, a family man, who had dreams and vision. He said that Rev. Dr. Neiliezhü Üsou gave support to the society, took care of his family and supported his children so they carry forward his dreams, vision and his legacy. Rio said it was Rev. Dr. Üsou’s concern for music that led his children to establish a music school today. “His legacy lives on,” the CM iterated. Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker Chotisuh Sazo and sev-

eral other dignitaries also graced the occasion. Earlier, glimpses of RDnüms were highlighted by Akobu Üsou, Montessori consultant while Ajau Haralu, curriculum planner for primary schools briefed the importance of Montessori. The function witnessed songs from Üsou instrumental praise, Ameu Üsou and the choir, children of RDnüms, Azha Üsou, School of Music, Nerhema Baptist Church Choir and MHBC choir. Welcome note and introductory speech was given by Aleü Üsou. In memoriam was pronounced by Kevisede Üsou while Küsa Yitachu delivered greetings on behalf of parents, RDnüms.

cally caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, C and D usually occurs as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids. Hepatitis B is also transmitted by sexual contact. “Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV) infections are silent diseases that remain asymptomatic for decades. Due to lower awareness, more than 80 percent HCV patients and over 60 percent patients with HBV are diagnosed at a stage when the disease is irreversible,” Anil Arora, chairman and head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi said. Ajay Kumar, senior con-

sultant gasteroenterology Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals told IANS: “Transmission of Hepatitis through infected syringes and blood is a significant problem in India.” “Most patients in India get the Hepatitis B and C forms in childhood either through mother to child transmission or contact with other siblings,” he said adding, many times after being infected the problem becomes chronic and they become permanent carriers of the virus. He added that there was much need to organize a countrywide education campaign among health workers, patients and the community, especially in the rural areas.

ULFA's strength has declined: Tarun Gogoi guwAhAtI, July 27 (ptI): With the ULFA observing its annual 'martyr's day' today in Assam, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the strength of the insurgents has declined and the security forces have foiled many of their attempts. "Today is their 'shaheed divas' and so they are trying their best to make their presence felt. We are resilient and the security forces have foiled many attempts, Gogoi said. "However, some incidents have occurred and we are very serious about this," Gogoi told reporters here referring to the grenade blasts in the state this week. He said that they were carried out by the antitalk faction of ULFA led by Paresh Barua. "ULFA's strength has come down a lot. When I took charge in 2001, about 400 people were killed a year by them. It is only around 10 deaths so far this year," Gogoi said. Stating that the government has alerted all districts to keep a strict vigil, he accused the banned outfit of getting help from 'more than one country' to destabilise peace and development in the state. Earlier this week, six persons were injured in a

grenade blast at a busy market area in Bokolia town in Karbi Anglong district. A day earlier, suspected insurgents triggered three serial grenade blasts in Lakhimpur district, injuring five persons on the high security Deputy Commissioner Court road, jail Road and Chawlkhowa areas. The police have arrested four persons, including an ULFA cadre and three surrendered members of the outfit for the Lakhimpur incident. Another militant, who was tasked with carrying out a blast in Dibrugarh, also surrendered. The chief minister also said that a task-force would be set up within a month to look into the modernisation of the police and to control terror incidents. "We are going to constitute a committee. It will be a task-force. It will deal with the issues of how to modernise the police and how to contain such (terror) incidents," Gogoi said. The task-force was likely to have members from various security agencies like police and army, besides prominent public figures. Speaking about modernisation of the police force, the chief minister said "We

are very serious about it. We are trying to modernise all facilities, training and other amenities ... We have already recruited 12,000 and we are going to recruit 8,000 more personnel." Gogoi, who held a highlevel security meeting yesterday, said as the definition of crime has expanded to various fields like childtrafficking and cyber crime, the police force needed to be trained to handle such cases. Asked if the police were not delivering its full potential, Gogoi said "Assam police is one of the best in the country. I am proud to have this force. It has fully controlled insurgency compared to many state police." Stating that thrust was on development and security, he said "No investor will come here if there is no sense of security in the state. "We are working for huge employment generation. We are also talking to CII and FICCI for jobs by private players in the MSME sector." The government would also construct houses for the rural and urban poor 'in a big way', besides taking care of children and widow who were victims of social disturbances, he said.

UCM charges GoI of ‘double standards’

ImphAl, July 27 (NNN): The United Committee Manipur (UCM) on Saturday blamed the neverending peace parleys between the Government of India and NSCN (IM) for “constantly threatening” the territorial integrity of Manipur. According to UCM President, Y Nabachandra, NSCN (IM) has demanded several counts including Greater Nagaland, a ‘Supra State Body’ model and the 'alternative

arrangement' for the Nagas ever since the Naga rebel group entered into a ceasefire agreement with the Centre and began peace talks. Nabachandra said this on the occasion of Integrity Protection Day (of Manipur) organised by the Akom Lup Kangleipak at Iboyaima Shumang Lila Shanglen, Imphal. Nabachandra charged the Government of India of “double standards” while dealing with the NSCN

(IM) to bring a political solution to the vexed Naga issue. He alleged that during the protracted political dialogue with the insurgent group, the Centre tells something to the NSCN (IM) and another thing to the people. Nabachandra said such attitude of the Centre coupled with the ceasefire agreement between the Government of India and NSCN (IM), and the peace parleys have constantly threatened the territo-

Manipur tightened security for migrant workers

ImphAl, July 27 (the hINDu): After a brief lull, migrant workers become targets of the armed persons in Manipur. Upon instruction of the Manipur Home Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei, the police and paramilitary forces have beefed up the security measures for them. For several decades, unidentified armed persons have been killing the ubiquitous migrant workers. In one or two cases of killings one underground organisation had

claimed responsibility. So far no killer has been brought to justice. About a month back a foreign made hand grenade was hurled inside a rented room at Uripok in Imphal killing two migrant workers and injuring three others. On Thursday one scraps dealer identified as Shahjahan Sheikh was gunned down at Phumlou Siphai in Imphal West district by two youths who came in a two wheeler. The killers escaped after the attack. There has been no claim.

3

No arrest has been made. Gangmei fears that militants have renewed their bloody campaign. From Friday, police and paramilitary forces have prevented the mobile hawkers moving around. Police sources said that over 50 migrant workers who were moving in the villages to sell various items or repair gas stoves or pressure cookers were rounded up and returned to their rented houses. For the time being they are asked not to venture out. If there is

more violence most of them will be kept in temporary relief camps to be opened inside the Imphal city. In absence of any formal claim from the insurgents police cannot say which group or groups are behind the fresh attacks. Some migrant workers who cannot move out of their rented rooms told The Hindu that since they cannot earn anything now they will have to return to their homes and they may try to come back once normality is restored. However there is no restric-

tion to the movements of these migrant workers within Imphal city and other areas where police had tightened security. Police feel that there may not be any formal claim from any underground organisation. This is because of the fact that parents and other sections had objected to the quit notice served on the migrant workers saying that in case of retaliations their children who are studying or working in almost all states will be at the receiving end.

NHRC questions 2010 Assam ‘encounter’

New DelhI, July 27 (ht): Questioning the genuineness of an encounter in Assam’s Sonitpur district on February 19, 2010 in which a person named Bijoy Boro was shot dead, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has instead recommended Rs. 5 lakh as monetary relief to Boro’s next of kin. “On the basis of the material on record, the Commission observed that there was no proof that an encounter took place, initiated by extremists, in which the security forces were compelled to return fire. Also, no

proof or the explanation was provided as to how the security forces came to this conclusion that Bijoy Boro had extremist links,” NHRC said. NHRC also turned down the defence ministry’s contention that monetary relief should not be given to Boro’s next of kin as the operation in which he was killed was “conducted in accordance with the laid down procedure and there was no human rights violation by the security forces”. “Thousands of such fake encounters have taken place in the Northeast. In Manipur itself, we

have documented 1528 such fake encounter cases. But unlike the Ishrat Jhan case, where the investigations have already started, not a single case in the Northeast has been investigated till now and only monetary compensations have been offered. The law should be equal for everyone,” said Babloo Loitongbam, leading human rights activist who is fighting the issue in the Supreme Court. While an AK-47 rifle was recovered from the scene of the incident, the police or the Army recovered no spent cartridges.

“Therefore, there was no proof that this weapon was fired,” the Commission noted adding that none of the standard tests that should have been routine in a thorough police investigation were conducted. While the Commission had sought specific forensic reports to establish that the rifle was in working order and had been fired, matching of Boro’s finger prints with those on the rifle and swabs from Boro’s fingers to confirm gun shot residue, none of those reports were produced before the Commission.

Illegal gun factory busted in Tripura AgArtAlA, July 27 (IANS): A clandestine gun factory was busted by Assam Rifles troopers in Tripura and three people arrested, police said here Saturday. Eight improvised guns, gun-making material and several hundred cartridges were recovered from the spot in northern Tripura, 195 km north of here. "Acting on a tip off, the Assam Rifles jawans (troopers) launched a combing operation Friday night and spotted the illegal gun factory at a jungle at Raishabari in northern Tripura. The security personnel arrested three people while the others managed to flee," a police spokesman told reporters. Police suspect that the arrested people might have associated with a militant outfit and making the firearms for the extremists. The three are being interrogated.

KolKAtA, July 27 (ptI): West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed on Saturday that a conspiracy was being hatched to dismiss her government, which was performing well. Peace had been restored in the (Darjeeling) hills and Junglemahal, but attempts were being made to create fresh trouble there, Mamata told the state legislative assembly during the one-day special session

to pass the budget. She said that those during whose time the state had witnessed terror were now raising a hue and cry about it. Mamata said that during in the previous two rural polls in 2003 and 2008 [when the Left Front was in power], a total of 75 people had died in violence. This time, only nine people had died in violence. She said that there were 159 poll-related violent inci-

Gogoi distances himself from minister’s meal remark

guwAhAtI, July 27 (ptI): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday distanced himself from Agriculture Minister Nilomoni Sen Deka’s remark of eight meals costing a total of Rs 20 in the state, saying it was his personal view. During a week, which saw making and withdrawing comments on the cost of a meal by various leaders in the country, Mr. Deka, who is also the Horticulture and Food Processing Minister, had on Friday reportedly said that eight persons can have a proper meal for Rs 20. “I have never said that I will get a meal for Rs 2. I do not know why he (Deka) said it and with what context. This was his personal views,” Mr. Gogoi told reporters here. The Chief Minister, however, said the cost of a meal will vary according to the price of food items avail-

able. “If we provide rice, dal and other items for just Re 1 each, then the cost will be very less,” Mr. Gogoi said. On poverty, he said the state government will go by the Planning Commission’s definition as it varies at different places across the country. Earlier, Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah, after triggering a huge controversy, on Friday expressed regrets over their respective remarks that one can have food for Rs 12 and Re 1. Mr. Babbar’s regret came after the Congress distanced itself from his remarks as also those of another party colleague Rashid Masood that meals could be had for Rs 5 in Delhi. Congress’ Communication Department in-charge Ajay Maken had said, “We do not agree with Rs 12 and Rs 5 statement of some leaders.”

There was a need for changing the definition for terming them as poll-related deaths, she said. Stating that people should be trusted in a democracy, she asked what was the use of making bombs in a democracy.

public discoursE Let Us Not Betray Our Solemn Pledge The preamble of the Yehzabo (Constitution) of Nagaland reads: “We the people of Nagaland, solemnly acknowledging that the sovereignty over this earth and the entire Universe belongs to Almighty God alone, and the authority of the people to be exercised on the territory is a sacred trust from God, who sustained our forefathers, the National workers and our people through the years of trail, and Having our attachment to the truth of popular sovereignty as declared on 22nd March 1956 and the articles contained in the provisional Yehzabo of 1962, to establish National Institutions based on the common ideals of democracy, justice, liberty, equality and fraternity among the people composing it, ….…” It is a known fact that the Naga people constituted the Naga National Council on February 2, 1946. Thus NNC formally declared Naga Independence on 14th August, 1947 one day ahead before India was set free by the British. Then NNC conducted a national Plebiscite on 16th May, 1951 and the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) was legitimately established on 22nd March, 1956 under the aegis of NNC through a federation to govern all Naga territories in accordance with the provisions of the Yehzabo of Nagaland. With the establishment of the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN), a heavy war was fought from 1956 to 1964 between the Government of India (GoI) and the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN). Meanwhile the Peace Mission Members, namely; B.P. Chaliha, J.P. Narayan and Rev. Michael Scott a Britisher proposed to sign an International Ceasefire Agreement between the GoI and the FGN and the proposal was accepted by the Federal authorities on 25th May, 1964 at Sakraba Village, Chakhesang Region, Nagaland. And this International Ceasefire was officially affected from 6th September, 1964. Thus the NNC/FGN upholds this Ceasefire Agreement up to this day. The NNC/FGN shall never allow the aggressors to annex our country. Therefore it is the bounden duty of every Naga to protect together our blessed land the gift of God, the creator of the Universe as every Naga who is born of the Naga blood is a bonafide member of NNC. The NNC does not seek political supremacy or any kind of benefits, but NNC always stands for the safety of the Naga nation. As a result the birthright of our nation has been clearly made known to the UN by our leader A.Z. Phizo, father of the Naga nation. Hence seeking any piecemeal solution within the constitution of the enemy is a taboo. It is against the mandate of the Naga people and against the will of God. In defence of our birthright, thousands of Nagas have sacrificed their precious lives and millions of our people have suffered. All these immeasurable sufferings faced by the Naga people cannot be sold out with a piece of plate of the enemy. And let us not involve anymore in the poisonous Indian elections rather we stand our ground as a people of a sovereign nation and fulfill the purpose of God in proclamation of His Holy words to the whole world. Let us not betray our pledge. If we betray our pledge, it would be a curse for all of us as well as for the posterity.

Clarification on “An Opinion”

I would like to bring to your notice that yesterday your paper carried an opinion article by a certain "Sedevi Angami” about budget deficit in the state. The article was not written by me. Somebody has used my name and sent it to the Newspaper by email. The person was not verified. This is highly dangerous and damaging. I understand that there is a remote possibility that there exists another person by my name and I do not have the monopoly of this name. I would suggest that all local dailies refrain from accepting arti-

cles without due verification. One can imagine the chaos and conflict this would create if everybody wrote to papers using pseudo names. Anybody today can create email addresses and write using somebody else's name. If all such articles are published, it would be utter chaos and your paper which till date has been doing reasonably well would lose credibility and trust. I am sure the press in Nagaland can evolve a mechanism to check this.

The Real Expose

To quote T. Meren Paul, Transport Commissioner (retd), it’s really “amusing” how officials, both serving and retired, can give lengthy discourses of various as-

pects of the law and try to justify their actions quoting this and that statute. ACAUT stands by its statement that Rs. 1500/- was collected from the particular deopani sand-laden truck as MONTHLY TAX and therefore illegal even though the money was paid as compounding fees. The simple fact is that laws can be subverted as no law is fool-proof. This is the reason why laws are subject to amendments. According to Meren Paul, “The owner/ offending party agrees to pay the prescribed compounding fees and compromise the case on the spot without going through the legal process of summary disposal by the Court. Thus compounding of offence is not a persecution nor a tax but a fee to compromise an offence purely intheinterestofthevehicleowner.”Thisparticularclause is the very loophole under Motor Vehicles Act 1988 as this allows MVEs under DTOs to engage in illegal activities while maintaining the façade of squeaky clean image at the same time. Every sand-laden truck that passes through the gates is loaded over and above MVA, 1988 specifications inviting the penalty of compounding fees. The sand stockiest being a clever businessman wants to maximize profits under least expenditure and what better way to do than bring more sand in one trip than making two trips to bring the same load? Talk about killing two birds with one stone. The MVEs under DTO also understand the economics of “one trip is better than two trips.” In a month, a truck makes around 10 trips to deopani, Assam to collect sand. If one were to pay Rs. 1500/as compounding fees 10 times every month for all 10 trips, a total of 15,000/- per month should be collected by MVEs as compounding fees (assuming the MVEs are strict rule enforcers). But no sand stockiest would be able to sustain his business under such circumstances since he is also paying multiple taxes to multiple UG factions. Therefore, instead of killing the goose that lays golden eggs the overall philosophy is to scratch each other’s back. Compounding fee is kept to a bare minimum or Rs. 1500/- per month and proper challan is issued as per MVA, 1988 and the amount is dutifully deposited in the treasury as per the provisions of the law and none is the wiser. What is left unsaid is that “chai pani” expenditure changes hands between the law enforcers and the sand stockiest for the ‘favour’ of keeping the latter in business. What Ms. Clara, DTO, Dimapur and Mr. T. Meren Paul fails to understand is that this Rs. 1500/- and the ‘chai pani’ expenditure are both added to the overall cost of procurement of sand and this is ultimately reflected in its pricing which the gullible public readily pays without a murmur! This is just the tip of the ice-berg, there being hundreds of sand stockiests in the state. What ACAUT revealed days back was not by any stretch of imagination an expose. It only wanted DTO Dimapur to rein in its officers. ACAUT has been demanding time and again that if one is really serious about tackling corruption, the departments should start their own internal investigations instead of taking on ACAUT. Vehemently denying the reality with an almost righteous indignation is not the way forward, most of all the learned Transport Commissioner(retd)himselfwhoshouldknowtheloopholes from where the rats comes in and goes out since he was master of the house once. This is the real expose.

to Wamaken Village and destroyed several Rubber plantation farms of Nagas on 17/07/2013. This issue is a very serious one and questionable in the eye of law that by what authority those arm forces of Assam have taken Law into their hand and destroyed those costly properties of Nagas before the political boundary between Assam and Nagas is demarcated. The government of Assam is well aware that the demand of Nagas is Independent and not State. It is also aware by everybody that the boundary between the Nagas and Assam is clearly mentioned and indicated by the British India Government in many of their available booklet. Moreover the Government of India assured the Nagas to return their forefathers conquered Areas of Land measuring 5000 Sq Miles encroached by Assam Government and the same area is yet to be returned to Nagas. And for which, the same boundary case between the Nagas and Assam is still kept pending in the Supreme Court of India for Final Settlement. Till such time Assam people should not threaten the Nagas with their Bow and Arrows or Arms and Ammunitions or destroying the properties of Nagas. I on behalf of the Nagas strongly condemn such unlawful activities done against the Nagas by the Assam Government and that the Assam Government should pay adequate compensation to the Rubber Farms owners without delay. t.L.Angami Founder & 1st President, G.B.F.N.

Naga identity and domicile - A mere commodity?

Members of The Naga Blog had highlighted a shocking news which we would like to bring to your notice. The Telegraph newspaper dated July 24 revealed that more than 58 candidates hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were arrested by Meghalaya police with fake documents which were supposedly procured at a price of Rs.15,000 from Dimapur, showing these outsiders as being domiciles of Nagaland. According to the police, these candidates had reportedly confessed that the documents were procured from a broker in Dimapur, Nagaland at a cost of Rs.15,000 each. If our Naga identity has become a mere commodity where it is being sold at a price by unscrupulous elements, then we can already foresee our pride in being indigenous people fizzle out within a generation or two. The indigenous inhabitant certificate or any other certificate proving a person’s domiciled identity ought to be considered as a sacred document; especially in the Nagaland context wherein our inissued by media Cell, ACAut digenous identity and existence is already being threatened by the influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. We earnestly request the Government to analyse and identify these loopholes, introduce stringent penalties and punishments to those who are involved in such activities which will yield a disastrous impact on our upcoming generation if these activities are not checked and resolved today. It is surprising and shocking to see that, why Yanpvuo Kikon, Armed Assam police and Assam Forest Official went the Naga Blog

Since we have inherited such a rich historical legacy from our forefathers, can we, the present generation plan and set goal for our coming generations to solve local problems by ourselves as our forefathers did and overcome our weaknesses and survive as a region against all kinds of exploitation. The GenNext is too precious to be left half baked with only casual daily routine. A total transformation of a young mind into a strong confident leader treading the path of successful entrepreneur to become a ‘Job Giver’ and not a ‘Job Seeker’ is needed. The terrible crisis of “unemployment” problem due to lack of self enterprise in Nagaland arises owing to the fact that parents as well as educational institutions inculcates job oriented education only and does not stress on self entrepreneurship resulting in our children becoming “job seekers” instead of being job givers, masters and owners. In this context, I am not discouraging public employment through competitive examinations, rather, the GenNext should strive to become the best public servants delivering the goods that are expected of a public servant with utmost integrity and commitment to their people, which in itself is an enterprise. In pursuance of such education, our children are sent to the various metros and even abroad and ultimately, to finance them, we are compelled to sell out our land. Thus, many renowned landlords and farmers have become almost landless or even landless and consequently, they too become jobless. Such cases can be seen in the fertile foothill belts of Dimapur and Peren districts in particular. To cite an instance, a village in Medziphema area has 150 households where only five owns TRC fields today and likewise, there are so many villages in Dimapur and Jalukie (Peren) area where such instances can be found. We as parents, by our own action we create a no-

munisation against the disease is an effective prevention method. Under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), the government provides Hepatitis B vaccine and the operational cost of vaccination to states and union territories for preventing Hepatitis B infection. Since April 2005, the government has also introduced auto-disabled (AD) syringes for all vaccinations under UIP in all states. AD syringes are single use, self-locking syringes that cannot be used more than once. This prevents misuse and contamination and cross- infection through repeated use of unsterile injection or equipment. Routine screening of blood units for Hepatitis B and C has been made mandatory for all blood banks to detect and discard contaminated blood units, a senior health ministry official said. Hepatitis viruses are estimated to be among the top 10 causes of death in India. According to the World Health Organization, 240 million people globally are chronically infected with Hepatitis B and around 150 million are chronically infected with Hepatitis C. As for Hepatitis C, one out of every 100 in India may be chronically infected by the virus and most among these 12 million people do not know they are infected. According to government figures, prevalence of Hepatitis C has been observed to be relatively higher in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. Interestingly, several studies conducted in these states have highlighted different risk factors which are believed to have led to the relatively higher prevalence of the condition. “Hepatitis C usually affects people in the age group of 20 to 60 years while Hepatitis B is most common in the age groups 10 to 60 years,” Kaushal Madan, senior consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist, Medanta - The Medicity Hospital, Gurgaon said.

“Be a Job Giver, not a Job Seeker” tion in our children that there is no life without a government job or they would not be able to get married unless one is employed in the government set up. We talk of independence but this culture of government job dependency has brought us far too many appointments even when there is no vacancy or work in the departments. We thereby deceive others as well as ourselves in our comfort zone collecting salaries without work or office attendance which robs our dignity, self respect, integrity, purpose of life, direction of God and pushes us towards a devalued community at large. Reportedly, in a certain department if the entire office staff were to attend office on the same day, then the fenced office premises would not be having enough standing space. Our identity and originality are much more important than just money. Where do we stand? Can we solve our own problems in the line our forefathers did? Seriously dwelling on the issue, it becomes our duty to help, guide and show leadership to GenNext so as to make them discover the latent potentials in themselves. They are fully loaded with talents and well equipped by faith in God to pursue any profession of their choice. The failure to recognize their worth is the problem of the day. For instance, it was Moses’ understanding of God’s immense power and his unfaltering relationship with God that saved the Israelites in their crisis when they were caught between multitudes of Egyptians soldiers and the Red Sea. Let us carefully examine our lives. Are we capable to solve our own problems as our forefathers did? Chakhroma weaknesses and failures might have driven our forefathers to pioneer CPO to solve their own problems by themselves and to counter exploitation. Probably they foresaw that no one would solve their problems unless they play their part. Let us apply the same remedy to build up GenNext. Our children are not created

by God to be ‘job seekers’, they only need to recognize and activate dormant talents, dormant seeds or dormant quality in them. The giant has to be awakened, seeds watered and qualities nurtured. Then they will know the higher philosophy of being created by God in His own image and likeliness. This inheritance is divinity in themselves in today’s complex world. Nagaland is not a landlocked state. It is the gateway to SE Asia. In the Global village, foreign merchandise goes to all over India via Mandalay- Tamu (Myanmar) and Moreh (Manipur). Some other roads are under construction through Nagaland to Myanmar. Nagaland is a land of untold opportunity and potentiality. We only need to do things within our reach sincerely with utmost integrity, then God will use us to do extraordinary things and it will work out miraculously beyond our expectation. “There are no hopeless situations but only hopeless men. Hopeless people are our problem.” The quality of life we need today is the degree and intensity to which a set of inherent characteristic of human character, physical, mental, emotional balance and value system fulfil and satisfy the achievement, esteem and self actualization needs of one self. ‘The greatest force in life is the hunger and search for the meaning of life’. It is our responsibility as parents, leaders and teachers to help the GenNext to utilise their full potential to be masters, owners, entrepreneurs and not slaves and job seekers. Casualness or procrastination has no place in this competitive world. “He sees your every step” and blesses you for being honest in small matters. The past cannot be changed. The present and the future are in our hands. God is asking for what one has got. Let one find out what is available within reach. Genuine care can do miracles. So sacrifice and invest in building Naga society and Chakhro region in particular. A new vibrant region of Chakhro has to be

built by new people before it is too late. Discipline, motivation and training constitute the basic platform. Let us inculcate these principles in the life of our children as a child’s development begins at home. The ‘I care’ is essential for our most precious asset-‘our children’. To re-make our world we need to re-build our children, mould the child constantly, with a fine tuned balance, to encourage the ‘unique spark’ of each child’s individuality, a core area to expose one’s unlimited potential to pinnacle height and intertwining delicately with extraordinary traits of entrepreneurial relationships thus becoming successful motivators to lead the society. Promote “Work and Worship” culture among them. Learning to solve our own problems by ourselves is the greatest challenge of the day. Therefore, realization of what they have, discipline to utilize the same is the key to our present crisis. This is the year of the Lord’s favour. They are meant to be masters, owners and job givers. However, we as parents must lead them to excel in ‘wise and courageous decision making’ and ‘risk taking abilities’ for the successful achievement with proper evaluation and assessment of themselves, so as to activate the latent power in them. This will re-build and awaken our Chakhro region and the Naga society as a whole. With reference to Chakhro region, we should be proud of our children’s high degree of excellence in many fields’ not only in academics, sports, music, communication skills etc. but in entrepreneurial leadership as well. However, it is also observed that there is lack of courage, consistency and discipline. This is where Chakhroma weakness lies. Should I say that the present generation is responsible for discouragement of our children? Multiple taxes, extortion, violence, too much easy money and land chasing too few people through corruptions may be examples. Drastic changes in these areas are needed.

tal forest and non forest area requirement of around 1000 Square Kilometer for the project, both for direct submergence (311 Sq. Km) and for compensatory afforestation in non forest areas (622 Sq. Km) will be “one of the highest land requirement by any single project all over the world.”

A Dimapur resident for more than 15 years after migrating from his native place in Assam, Ali had earned the trust of his employers often running errands and doing chores in the house. Ali also said in his statement to police that he had physical relations with the girl. This however can be confirmed only after the medical report is received. He was booked under section 363 of the Indian Penal Code, while more sections could be added as investigation progresses, it was added. Juvenile held for molesting 5-yr-old girl Earlier on July 25, a sixteen year-old juvenile was detained for allegedly molesting a five-yearold girl. The incident occurred at Chumukedima ward I. The juvenile, a non-Naga construction labourer, was caught by angry residents and handed over to the police, it was learned. Women Cell said that the juvenile was handed over to Chidline after the necessary formalities.

Though parents, leaders and teachers play a very important role for children, we are indirectly deciding the future of our coming generation by what we behave as if we are role models imposed on the society. The progress and backwardness of our region dwells on each one of us. If we don’t want our children to be any other but masters, we may plan carefully in advance for our children’s development and future ‘right now’ as the peak character formation period is till the age of 18 years. As parents, shall we ask ourselves what are we suppose to do, if we want our children to come up? The answer may be – ‘come out of our comfort zone then get into the faith zone and do our part to let God do the extraordinary to our family, society and region’. The plethora of challenges we have evinced to harness our children’s boundless energies, so as to empower them to create a benchmarking niche in this golden era of exponential economic development phase of our state is to freely discuss with them and encourage them. The greatest qualities that we need to encourage in our children are, ‘Hard Work’, ‘Discipline’, ‘Integrity’ and ‘Consistency’. Put them into 24 hours busy schedule system. Then they will automatically overcome laziness and indulgences. A child spends hardly 6-7 hours in the school which focus only on academics while we, as parents, have to plan their programme for 17-18 hours each day. All of our children need not go to metros for studying if we can inculcate the hard working abilities of our forefathers in them. What is our conscious plan for this? You and I are to be blamed for the backwardness of our society and region if we don’t bother on this matter. How long will the child hold our hand and walk? He has to venture out into this complex and competitive world independently and forge and empower himself, whether he likes it or not. Plan and act for his future right now, to be a master, a job giver to re-make our society, region and Nagaland. Is the superhero movie genre as invulnerable as its iconic characters?

M

an of Steel may have yielded the top spot at this weekend’s U.S. box office to Monsters University, but across the world, Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot remains No. 1 in people’s hearts. The movie has made north of $400 million internationally despite what could charitably be described as “poor critical reception” — and shows little sign of stopping. It’s also very much not alone. Even though reviews of the film ranged from the excited to the downright damning, its reception with audiences remained decidedly strong. It set a new opening weekend record for June box office and even though the movie’s aggregate rating by critics on Rotten Tomatoes was a decidedly meh 56 percent, the audience rating was “fresh” at 82 percent and the audience metric of Cinemascore gave it an A-. Many a summer superhero tentpole has followed a similar trajectory. All of which underscores one simple, yet still surprising, truth about flicks based on superhero comics: Moviegoers can’t seem to get enough of them. It also, however, begs the uncomfortable followup question: Will that last or will the appeal of capes and special powers and do-goodery wear off as audiences move on to other thrills? There were many — myself amongst them — who believed that the staggering success of last year’s Avengers marked the pinnacle for the genre, and that audiences would drift away from superhero-centric movies after the big climax of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And then Iron Man 3 broke box office records all around the world. Man of Steel’s success may be an even stronger indicator of the longevity of superhero movies as a genre, however. At this point, we cynically expect Marvel movies to do well, because — The Incredible Hulk aside — all Marvel movies do well. What Man of Steel does is prove that audiences can get excited about a big superhero movie that isn’t produced by Marvel (or starring Batman). That’s a good thing, too, considering just last week Sony announced its timeline for two more Spider-Man movies beyond next year’s sequel to Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, effectively plotting new Spidey flicks for this fall’s incoming high school freshmen to catch in theaters until after their graduations. Calling Spider-Man the company’s “most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise,” Sony Pictures’ marketing and distribution chair Jeff Blake revealed that the studio plans to release the third and

ike a hot claw through butter, The Wolverine slashes its way into thousands of movie theaters this Friday. The latest installment in the increasingly sprawling X-Men film franchise sees Hugh Jackman reprise his role as the adamantium-laced antihero for the sixth time — and seeks to right the wrongs of his odious last spin-off, 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And how, exactly, does The Wolverine plan to right those wrongs? By offering a grimmer, grittier take on a character that first appeared in Bryan Singer's relatively family-friendly XMen back in 2000. All dimly lit backdrops, brooding introspection, and visceral action, The Wolverine is the film fans have longed for since the character first clawed his way onto screens more than a decade ago. The new film is an adaptation of Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's 1982 comic-book origin story, which many hold up as the character's defining run. But while this new film may give hardcore X-Fans what they want, it's also part of an unsettlingly large wave of brooding comic-book blockbusters. If you need evidence of the industry's obsession with self-serious superheroes, look no further than your nearest multiplex: The summer season has already served up Zack Snyder's joyless Man of Steel and the surprisingly introspective Iron Man 3. There's more of the same on the horizon: Marvel's upcoming Thor sequel will take its audience into a "dark world," and the soph-

T

fourth installments of the rebooted series in June 2016 and May 2018, respectively. A week earlier, Disney announced two mystery movies by Marvel Studios with 2016 and 2017 release dates respectively, adding to a slate that already has two superhero movies every year between now and then. Warner Bros., meanwhile, is rumored to be fast-tracking a Man of Steel sequel that would see it arrive in theaters as early as next year, with the longstalled Justice League movie arriving a year later, a schedule which seems not only faster than a speeding bullet in terms of movie production, but also more than a little ambitious (or insane). Add to that Fox’s X-Men franchise — The Wolverine is coming next month, X-Men: Days of Future Past next year — and other, lesser-known, superhero properties in various stages of development or production including Kick-Ass 2 this August and a Fantastic Four flick in 2015, and it’s increasingly clear that if the success of the superhero genre is just a bubble in the wider summer blockbuster movie story, it’s a bubble that’s nowhere near bursting — at least on the supply side. Of course, most of the big superhero successes

have come from iconic characters like Iron Man and Superman, who are already well-known to mainstream audiences. It will be more interesting to see in coming years is how moviegoers react to films whose superheroes who lack the brand awareness of the Avengers or X-Men. Even with the Marvel logo attached, next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy — a collection of space-faring characters who have only been in print intermittently since the concept’s creation decades ago, featuring a talking raccoon and giant living tree, amongst other characters — may prove to be too much of an abstract concept in much the same way that Warner/DC’s Green Lantern did in 2011. Given the amount of lead time required in making these special-effects heavy movies — and the amount of lead we’re seeing in their announcements — it’s possible that audiences could tire of superhero movies before Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man makes his fourth appearance. But if they do, the question may not just be whether the genre is oversaturated, but whether the box office success of the genre can persist beyond the nostalgia and familiarity of its most iconic heroes. Why so serious, superhero movies? Daniel Bettridge

omore outing for Captain America has been described by Marvel's Kevin Feige as "a '70s political thriller masquerading as a big superhero movie." The latest swath of superhero movies is a far cry from the altogether more upbeat escapades that were enjoyed by Tobey Maguire in 2002's Spider-Man or the colorful heroes of 2000's X-Men — record-breaking films that helped blaze the trail for today's explosion of comic book adaptations on the silver screen. So, to borrow a phrase from one of the genre's darkest figures: Why so serious, superhero movies? After all, these characters are plucked from a medium known for its escapism. And let's be honest: These heroes are cape-wearing aliens, armorclad millionaires, and Norse gods. It's okay to take ridiculously conceived superheroes seriously — but in the rush to be taken seriously, superhero movies have largely forgotten how to have fun. In many ways, the darkening of the superhero genre reflects the trajectory that comic books followed more than 30 years ago. 1986 was something of a watershed for the comic book industry — a year that is widely credited as ush-

ering in "The Dark Age" of comics with the publication of acclaimed series like Alan Moore's Watchmen and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Suddenly, comic books were infused with darker political, psychological, and sociological undertones. Superheroes were no longer whiz-bang do-gooders who delighted kids, but anti-heroes with the same emotional baggage as the aging fans who read about them. As the subject matter moved away from the black-and-white morality that dominated the genre's so-called Golden Age, it delved into the shades of gray that lie between right and wrong. So when did big-screen superheroes start to emulate their comic-book counterparts? Hollywood's treatment of superheroes experienced a similar transformation when Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight hit theaters in 2008. Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his terrifying turn as the Joker, and the movie's failure to earn a Best Picture nomination has been widely credited with motivating the Academy to expand the field of nominees from five films to a maximum of 10. Does the success of dark superhero

films mean audiences no longer want superheroes to smile? How, for example, would modern moviegoers react to a whimsical, romantic Superman movie like the Christopher Reeve-starring Superman if it showed up in theaters today? For a likely answer, look no further than Brandon Routh, who did a pretty decent Reeve impression in 2006's Golden Age-inspired Superman Returns, which was tepidly received by critics and audiences alike. It's not for nothing that Man of Steel eschews the series' cinematic tradition in favor of emulating the tone of The Dark Knight. It's no longer enough for Superman to save the world; instead, he needs to spend his screen time contemplating his place in it. There are a few heartening exceptions — Joss Whedon's relatively upbeat The Avengers springs to mind, as does the failed attempted to mount a superhero comedy with The Green Hornet — but in the mad rush for gritty realism, superhero movies are also running the risk of losing a little piece of their soul: The sense of whimsy and unabashed escapism that has attracted audiences of all ages through the years. Superhero movies, like action movies and romantic comedies, have become a genre unto themselves, and there's no reason that one movie — however effective — should set the tone for all the rest. ‘The Wolverine’ Post-Credits Scenes

he audience I saw The Wolverine with sat quietly through the movie, not distracted, but not audibly engaged either. (They were certainly more docile than the crowd I saw Turbo with; there goes that tool for predicting box-office success.) Then the credits rolled, and after the above-the-line talent had gotten their contractually obligated billing, the movie started back up again for the now compulsory post-credits tag. The crowd lost it, and by "it," I mean their heads, their minds, their composure, the ability to remain seated -- the works. I won't spoil the scene's content except to say that it mainly serves to tee up next summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, and that it builds to a reveal that, while nominally surprising, should come as a shock to no one familiar with the way comic books bend their own history to suit the whims of their fans. Until its pro forma climax, The Wolverine commendably, and for the most part successfully, departs from the biggerfaster-louder logic of modern blockbusters. Wolverine, given healing powers by mutated genes and an unbreakable skeleton by the U.S. military, may be functionally immortal, but his adamantium claws require him to work on a human scale: He kills his enemies face-to-face, not by throwing a building at them. But that closing tag puts it back on familiar larger-than-life turf, which may be why it drew more whoops than the rest of the movie combined. City Weekly critic Scott Renshaw, who along with several other colleagues confirmed that his audience went similarly bonkers for The Wolverine's mid-credits tag, wrote on Twitter that "Credit teasers are a microcosm of movie-news mentality: Potential is always more interesting than what's actually happening right now." Given how much of the movie's (presumably gory) violence takes place just out of frame (See "This Summer's Movies Have a PG-13 Problem") , perhaps it's appropriate that its biggest thrill comes from something unseen. But it also reveals the extent to which comic-book movies, and movies informed by parallel sensibilities, have transformed the methods of the movie industry's top-tier product. Hollywood's early stabs at the comic-book idiom were apologetic, assuming that general audiences knew little of their titular properties beyond their basic iconography. But beginning with Tim Burton's Batman in 1989, the industry began to realize the power of motivating audiences who already had a stake in the characters. I'll never forget seeing the movie at an early screening filled with fans who'd bought their tickets through a local comic-book store, and the titanic roar that rose from the crowd as Batman's ship broke through the clouds and hung for an instant in front of a full moon, forming a perfect replica of the Bat-Signal. It was as if Hollywood knew we were there, knew we mattered. This movie was ours. Twenty-four years later, the movie surrounding that moment has become redundant. Last weekend, Warner Bros., who released Burton's Batman movie, whipped ComicCon's fans into a frenzy with a carefully staged, content-free presentation revealing that Superman and Batman will appear in the same movie in 2015. There's no footage, not even a script, but the mere idea was enough to send Hall H into paroxysms of ecstasy. Watch past the reveal in this fan-shot clip to hear a woman in the crowd exclaim, "I have goosebumps. I have actual goosebumps." Like soap operas, serial comic books don't end until their audience has had enough. No death is final, no door ever truly shut. And so it's become in comic-book movies. The stories wind on and on, reaching a conclusion only to have it undone, a thread provocatively left un-snipped. Rather than catering to new arrivals, the movies make them as if they've missed something: The heroes of both Iron Man Three and The Wolverine are haunted by the events of previous franchise installments, their anxieties nearly unintelligible to those who haven't seen The Avengers and X-Men: The Last Stand, or have seen and forgotten them. Instead of an asterisk reading "See Uncanny X-Men #27," these lacunae serves as incentives to catch up on or re-watch earlier movies, and as warnings for those who might considering skipping them in future. Better fleeting allusions to the past than the 10-minute chunk of Resident Evil: Retribution given over to superfluously recapping the franchise's onscreen history. But there's something insidious -- and deliberate -- about the way these movies are designed to make viewers feel incomplete, to long for movies that don't yet exist and in some cases may never. (Pity Dylan Baker, set up to be The Lizard in Spider-Man 4 but replaced in the franchise reboot.) Perhaps one of the reasons The Wolverine feels more self-contained, more satisfying, is because it's adapted, without credit, from a miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, a stand-alone spinoff that, for once, manages to fit a beginning, a middle, and an end into the same movie.

few years ago, the Spirit of the Lord spoke to my heart and said, Preach the goodness of God and fear not the reproach of men. As I began to search out what the Bible has to say about God's goodness, I found it was a theme that ran from Genesis to Revelation. Why do you suppose the Bible would so strongly emphasize the simple truth that God is good? Because it is the foundation of our faith in Him. The more we know God's goodness, the more we trust Him. The more we trust Him, the easier it is for us to put our lives into His hands. Only by placing our lives in His hands can we open the way for Him to save us, bless us and work through us, so that His wonderful will can be done on earth as it is done in heaven. When I began teaching on the goodness of God in healing services, I saw more miracles and healings than before. As people understood God's goodness, they found it easy to trust Him. That trust enabled them to open their hearts to His healing power. When they saw from the Word that it was the "Father's good pleasure to give" them the kingdom (Luke 12:32) and that "no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly" (Psalms 84:11), they realized God was for them and not against them. The truth dawned on their hearts that He was not holding out on them. He was not trying to keep healing away from them. Instead, because He loves to do good, He was endeavoring to help them. Seeing that, they were able to relax and by faith receive what they needed from Him. My prayer is that the same thing will happen for you. Until you settle the fact that God is good and you can trust Him with your life, your faith is never going to be great because you will always draw back in fear. You will always be thinking, What if He doesn't come through for me? What if He is not listening to me? What if He asks me to do something that will harm me in some way? However, once your heart grasps the goodness of God, you will be confident that He will never hurt you, abandon you or let you down. As long as you follow Him, He will always be there—loving you, helping you and blessing you.

God Isn't Confused Traditional religion has made people think they couldn't depend on the goodness of God. Religion has taught that one day God might make you sick. The next day He might make you poor. But that is contrary to the written Word of God. God is not confused about good and evil. He knows the definition of a blessing and a curse, and His definition is the same as ours. (That's because we got ours from Him.) In Deuteronomy 28, you can read the blessings and the curses as He described them to the nation of Israel. He sums up the blessings in verses 11-13: The Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them (New King James Version). Obviously, God has figured out what's good for us and what's not. He knows it's good when we have more than enough natural provision in our lives. He knows if we plant crops, it's good to reap big harvests. He knows if we have livestock, it's good for them to increase. He knows it's good for our children to be blessed and for us to be physically healthy and whole. On the other hand, He knows it's evil for us be sick, poor, frightened and oppressed. Actually, the Hebrew word shalom that the Lord uses so frequently to bless His people means to have wholeness in your life—spirit, soul and body. It means you have nothing missing, nothing broken. God knows that is the way things ought to be, and that is the way He wants them to be—not just for a few of His people but for every one of them. As Psalms 145:9 says, "The Lord is good to all."

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

"[What, what would have become of me] had I not believed that I would see the Lord's goodness in the land of the living!" (Psalms 27:13, The Amplified Bible)

a man after His own heart (I Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22). As a young shepherd tending his flock on the hills of Israel, David fellowshiped with God and came to know His nature. He knew He was a loving God. He knew that He was good, kind and patient. David knew that God would take care of him, provide for him and deliver him from danger. From that revelation, David wrote Psalms 23. My, what insight it gives us into God's goodness! You may have quoted it religiously for years. You may have even thought it referred to the care God gives us in heaven. But this psalm reveals what God wants to do for us here on earth—in the "valley of the shadow of death," where we must deal with our enemy, the devil. With those things in mind, read Psalms 23 and let it speak to your heart in a fresh way about the kindness and loving care God wants to give you: The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and shield me], I shall not lack. He makes me lie down in [fresh, tender] green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters. He refreshes and restores my life (my self); He leads me in the paths of righteousness [uprightness and right standing with Him—not for my earning it, but] for His name's sake. Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your The Key to the Courage of David staff [to guide], they comfort me. only goodness, mercy, and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, and through the length of my days the house of the Lord [and His presence] shall be my dwelling place (The Amplified Bible). The more deeply you understand the truth of those words, the more you will be able to trust God in every circumstance of life. Your confidence in Him will make you bold when others are timid. That is what happened to David. The revelation of Psalms 23 filled him with confidence in God. It made him bold and daring in dangerous situations. When a lion came after the sheep of his flock, David didn't run away. He single-handedly caught that lion by the mane and killed it. When the bear came, David killed it too. Later in his life, when everybody in Israel was afraid of the giant Goliath, David was the only one courageous enough to fight him. What was behind this great courage? David revealed that in I Samuel 17:37 when he said, "The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine." David not only knew about the goodness of God, he had seen it work in his life. He had seen the victories God's goodness had gained for him, and just thinking of them made him bold. You and I can be the same way. The more we understand the goodness of God and the more we see that goodness operating in our lives, the more victories we will have to remember. The more victories we remember, the harder it is for the devil to talk us into letting him run over us. We'll remember the victory over the lion and the bear in our own lives and think, You know, God got me this far. He will not let me down now! Look What the Lord Has Done! I have had that thought more times than I can remember in the past 35-plus years. My life was such a mess when I first learned about God's goodness. I have often wondered, What would have become of me if I had not believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living? I might not even be alive right now. I certainly would not be enjoying the blessings I am enjoying today. Over the years, as Ken and I have continued to trust God with our lives, we have seen the evidence of His

goodness continue to increase until it has totally overwhelmed us. The more I have come to know the goodness of the Lord, the more I have come to believe that God wants all of us to give our lives to Him so He can lavishly, without reserve, pour His blessings upon us. He wants all of us to be so blessed that everywhere we look, we see the goodness of God. Every time we drive up to our homes we say, "Look what the Lord has done!" Every time we get in our car and turn the key we say, "Thank You, Lord, for this good car!" God's desire is for us to feel so good when we get up in the morning that we cannot help but be grateful for a well body that functions faithfully and feels so good! Every time we look at our children and see the peace they enjoy, we praise the Lord. God's desire is that every direction we turn, we experience His goodness! Notice, I said "we," not just me. Not just my husband, Kenneth. God wants to bless you too—in every area of your life. He wants to bless you spiritually. He wants to bless you physically. He wants to bless you in your finances, in your relationships, and in your career. He wants to give you the desires of your heart. I know that sounds too good to be true, but that's not surprising. If you think about it, Jesus Himself seemed too good to be true. The fact that God sent Him to pay the price for all our sins, the fact that He died so we could live by simple faith in Him, sounds too good to be true. But it's true nonetheless. And Romans 8:32 says, "He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?" If you're still somewhat skeptical, let me ask you a question. Where will you be this time next year if you don't start believing to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living? You'll be right where you are now. Things will be no better in your life. In fact, they'll probably be worse because the devil will still be unhindered in his work to steal, kill and destroy. But if you'll find out what the Bible says about God's goodness and dare to believe it, things will begin to change in a wonderful way. Your life will immediately begin to improve. A year from now, you'll not only see that goodness on the pages of your Bible, you'll see it around you every day of your life. That's what I call living! hen a player signs with a team, his goal and dream is to be able to perform on the front lines and show what he or she is capable of doing. Not one player signs a contract eager to warm up the bench or end up as the water boy. So why are some of us who belong on God's team so comfortable and satisfied with being on the sidelines? Why are we so complacent about being actively involved? Has apathy or the absence of passion flooded our churches and our homes? Maybe a disappointment or a huge setback caused you to crawl back to the sidelines and perhaps run from what you know you are called to be. Maybe things got tough and nothing seemed to be going your way and giving up seemed like your best option at that time. There will always be reasons and circumstances that will incite you to quit and cause you to give up and to back down, but regardless of what your situation is, you have to stay in the game and know God will take your setback and give you a comeback. For many years, I got out of the game. I got caught up in drugs, followed emotions that deceived me and even struggled with an eating disorder. That’s when I asked, "Where are you, God?" And I heard these words: “I will never leave you or forsake you.” The God of the universe goes before and has not abandoned you. Your life isn't over because you had a setback or because you came short of accomplishing something you had set your mind to do. Your life is only over if you choose to quit and give up (Deut. 31:6). If you are considering throwing in the towel, the words in Deuteronomy 31:6 are powerful and can sustain you through any storm and hardship. Let's not be on the sidelines, nursing our wounds, as some of us have a tendency of doing. Ruth stayed in the game after her husband was killed—talk about a life changing experience! She made a choice to stick with Naomi, who was also a widow, and didn't run back to the land of comfort. As a result, God honored her by giving her much more than what she had lost. Ruth’s life was changed forever because she chose to stay in the game. The battle isn't over. More than ever, the body of Christ, the army of God, needs to remain sharp, alert and ready for battle. Leave the sidelines to the cowards! Get ahold of Gods plan for your life and run with it. “If God is for us, who can ever be against us?" (Rom. 8:31, NLT). God can bring change to any situation or any problem we face if we allow Him. It’s our attitude toward that annoying thing that is holding us back that will determine our victory. You are either determined to win or lose. The enemy of our souls will try to discourage us and tell us that it’s over—tell us that we are finished. But what does God say to you, saints? Read the Word and find Scriptures pertaining to your unique problem or situation. Your roadmap to victory is found in the Word of God. It’s our responsibility to read it, apply it, stand on it and see it manifest in our lives. You and I are key players in this game. The field is ready for us to take our place. Will history say we fought, or will it say that we were cowards? I am still under construction—the closer I get to Him, the more He reveals who He created me to be. I am no longer searching for my identity because everything I need is found in Him, and everything I am is because of Him. ere is a call for the endurance of the saints” (Revelation 14:12). We all long for rest and refreshment. That’s a God-given longing that he promises to fulfill: “I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish” (Jeremiah 31:25). And in a very real way Jesus gives rest to “all who labor and are heavy laden” and come to him (Matthew 11:28). But in this age, it is not the complete rest. In this age, Jesus grants us the gospel rest of ceasing the impossible labor of self-atonement for our sins (2 Corinthians 5:21). But in embracing the gospel we find ourselves also drafted into a war — a war to keep believing the gospel and a war to spread it to others. In this age we “strive to enter that [complete] rest” of the age to come (Hebrews 4:11). And wars are exhausting — especially long ones. That’s why you are often tired. Most soldiers who experience the fierceness of combat want to get out of it. That’s why you feel urges to escape or surrender. That’s why there are times you’re tempted to give up. But don’t give up. No, rather “take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded” (2 Chronicles 15:7).

The lifeline of Telangana turns 50

Nizamabad, aP, July 27 (The hiNdu): Sri Ram Sagar Project, the lifeline of Telangana districts completes 50 years on Friday. Located in Balkonda mandal, 50 kilometers away from the district headquarters town on Nizamabad-Adilabad border, the project originally known as the Pochampad project is the lone major project across Godavari river in the entire Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Construction of this project began on July 26, 1963 after the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had laid the foundation. He drove to the project site by road directly from Srisailam after inaugurating the project there. The Pochampad project constructed with dung lime and metal took 20 years for total completion. As many as 35 villages were affected with its construction. Among them 16 were fully submerged, seven partially and five villages suffered back water problem. Seven villages lost their agriculture land. Thus, the project took the present shape when people of 35 villages sacrificed all their things.

Even today people of the submerged villages keep making rounds to the government offices for payment of compensation as they initially were not fully justified. A noteworthy point here is that though the people of the district lost everything they did not get much benefit out of the project. They are able to use only two tmcf of its water through Lakshmi canal as it was built at a higher place. Now the project is able to provide water for irrigation to 16 lakh acres in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal and Nalgonda districts. In the recent past the project was in the media now and then as Babli was built upstream in Maharashtra by its Government, posing threat to the existence of the SRSP. The project with a capacity of 90 tmcf of water has three canals-Saraswathi, Kakatiya and Lakshmi. Besides, a flood flow canal was also dug later on to discharge flood water to downstream districts. Incidentally, marking this important occasion, the project was full to its brim today and 25,000

cusecs of water was being discharged by lifting eight gates in the morning. Minister for Major Irrigation P. Sudarshan Reddy who visited the project garlanded Nehru statue installed on the right side of the dam and paid tributes to him.

Non-Telangana Congress MPs meet PM, oppose division of Andhra Pradesh NeW delhi, July 27 (PTi): With the top Congress leadership appearing to have veered towards creation of Telangana, Congress MPs from rest of Andhra Pradesh opposed any division of the state while a party MP from Telangana region said the government should go ahead with the decision. The six anti-Telangana MPs, including Union ministers M M Pallam Raju, K S Rao, Chiranjeevi and D Purandesh-

wari (all hailing from coastal Andhra) and K Bapiraju and Anantarami Reddy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a delegation to push for keeping Andhra Pradesh united. The MPs told Prime Minister that there would be repercussions not only for the state but also for the entire country if Andhra Pradesh is divided. Rao said after the meeting that any decision to split the state would create

problems. It was neither in the interest of the people nor the various regions of Andhra Pradesh, he said. Talking to reporters, Bapiraju said the delegation told the Prime Minister that formation of Telangana will create problems in many states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh where there are demands for separate statehood. He said the PM gave a patient hearing to the

leaders. On the other hand, pro Telangana Congress MP Ponnam Prabhakar told a press conference that there should be no opposition, including from party MPs, to the formation of the separate state as the process of consultation was over. Now that the party has taken a “decision”, the leaders from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema should not “create any hurdle” in the formation of Telangana. “Please

NEW DELHI, JULY 27 (PTI): A Delhi court on Saturday issued fresh summons to Reliance ADA Group chairman Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani to appear as prosecution witnesses before it next month in the 2G spectrum allocation case. While Anil has been summoned on August 22, Tina has been asked to appear before the court on August 23. According to court sources, special CBI judge O P Saini has taken on record the list of witnesses to be called for recording of

evidence submitted by the agency and issued fresh summons to them. Besides Anil and Tina Ambani, the CBI has given the names of Reliance Energy Ltd officials Anita Gokhale and Kamalkant Gupta, CFSL experts Deepak R Handa and Vijay Verma and also a metropolitan magistrate. The court had on July 19 allowed CBI’s plea to make Anil and Tina Ambani prosecution witness in the case as their testimonies may throw light on alleged investment of over Rs 990

crore by his group companies in Swan Telecom, facing trial in the case along with its promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka. It had said CBI’s plea to summon Ambani, his wife and 11 others as prosecution witnesses was essential for arriving at a just decision in the case. The court issued the fresh summons to the couple after Ambani, who was scheduled to depose before it on July 26, had sought exemption from personal appearance on the ground that he has “pre-scheduled”

business engagements. He had said that he received the summon on July 23 and “owing to extremely short notice of just two days”, it would not be possible for him to appear before it and he would appear before the court any day after August 15. On July 25, the Supreme Court had refused to grant an urgent hearing on the plea of Reliance Telecom Ltd (RTL), an accused in the case, challenging the trial court’s order summoning Anil and Tina as prosecution witnesses in the case.

The apex court has posted RTL’s application for hearing on Monday before a special bench, comprising justices Singhvi and K S Radhakrishnan, which is hearing all the matters pertaining to the 2G scam. The trial court had allowed Anil Ambani’s exemption plea for July 26. The court had said testimonies of Anil and Tina Ambani are required to prove the facts “pertaining to incorporation of shell companies as some of the witnesses examined earlier have not been able to

do so”. It had dismissed the contentions of the counsel for the accused persons that CBI’s plea “suffers from the vice of delay”, saying the process of examination of prosecution witnesses is still underway. RADAG’s company, RTL, is an accused in the case. Three top Reliance ADAG executives Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair are also facing trial in the case. CBI has alleged RTL used Swan Telecom, an ineligible firm, as its front company to get 2G licences and radio waves.

NeW delhi, July 27 (aNi): Amidst the rousing debate on the definition of poverty amongst politicians, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Saturday questioned the way poverty is calculated in the country. Joining Union Law and Justice Minister Kapil Sibal, who also criticized the Planning Commission’s methodology of calculating poverty in Kolkata, Singh used the micro-blogging site Twitter to express his

concerns about the calculation of the poverty line. “I have always failed to understand the Planning Commission criteria for fixing poverty line. It is too abstract, can’t be same for all areas” Singh tweeted this morning. Singh followed his remark up by another tweet that suggested that certain criteria be laid down to define who is poor in the country. “First indicator of Poverty is Malnourishment

and Anaemia in the Family which is easily measurable. Can’t we have that as a criteria?” Singh said on Twitter Yesterday, Kapil Sibal had also conveyed that the process employed by the Planning Commission to calculate poverty was problematic. “If the Planning Commission said those who live above Rs. 5000 a month are not at poverty line, obviously there is something wrong with the definition

of poverty in this country. How can anybody live at Rs. 5000?” Sibal asked, at an address in Kolkata. The Commission had

Congress asks Goa govt to move SC to prosecute guilty miners, politicos

PaNaJi, July 27 (PTi): Opposition Congress today asked Manohar Parrikar government to file an affidavit in the supreme court for criminal prosecution of mining companies, miners and politicians involved in the illegal extraction of coal. Congress also accused the ruling BJP government of “fooling” people by filing complaints with the crime branch even though the issue is being heard by the apex court. “There is no need to go to different forum. This will further delay resumption of mining in the state. Congress is in the favour of restarting the mining activity as soon as possible,” said Congress spokesman Aleixo Lourenco. The state Mines and Geology department had filed case with the crime branch in connection with illegal mining in the state. “(Instead) the state government should file affidavit in the SC asking for criminal prosecution of all mining companies, mine-owners and politicians (who are) involved in illegal mining,” he said. Lourenco conceded that his party lost the 2012 Assembly elections on the illegal mining issue. “People threw us out because of illegal mining. But now the current government should not create further mess,” he said. The supreme court imposed a temporary ban on mining in the state on the petition filed by a state-based NGO, Goa Foundation last year. The apex court has directed the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to probe into the instances of illegal mining as pointed out by Justice M B Shah Commission in its report.

Curfew in J&K town after injured woman dies

SriNagar, July 27 (iaNS): Curfew was clamped in Jammu and Kashmir’s Badgam town Saturday in addition to more than two dozen villages after a woman, injured during sectarian clashes July 23, died. Fatima, 55, of Dadina village in Badgam district was admitted to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura in Srinagar with critical head injuries July 23. Family and relatives of the woman claimed police had beaten her without any provocation when she was standing with other village women. After news of her death spread in the already tense areas where curfew had been imposed for the last four days in the wake of sectarian clashes, authorities decided to clamp curfew in the district headquarters of Badgam as well. “Restrictions have been imposed in Badgam town as a precautionary measure while the situation is fast returning to normal in the district”, a senior police officer said here.

5,000 doctors worldwide to view live surgery in India

mumbai, July 27 (iaNS): More than 5,000 doctors from all over the world will witness a live surgery to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a sleep disorder, to be performed at the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) here Tuesday, an official said here Saturday. This is the first time that such a live robotic surgery will be performed before a global audience of medicos along with expert lectures on the occasion. Leading ENT surgeon Vikas Agrawal will operate on three patients to show the different issues pertaining to OSA among Indians. Two Italian medicos and pioneers in OSA - Claudio Vicini and Filippo Montevecchi - shall discuss different aspects of Transoral Robotic Surgery for OSA. OSA is a disorder in which a person stops breathing during night, maybe several times - with the gaps called ‘apneas’ (literally “without breath”). The disorder occurs when tissues in the upper throat collapse at different times during sleep, thereby blocking passage of air. According to Agrawal, OSA increases with age and the latest Indian studies have revealed that its prevalence is three times higher in men as compared to women. Agrawal is the first Indian medico to cure this complex ENT procedure robotically and endoscopically. AHI Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Ramakanta Panda (who operated on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh four years ago), has lauded the initiative which would help AHI set new benchmarks globally.

Violence erupts after rival rallies across Egypt CAIRO, JULY 27 (ReUteRs): Egyptian security forces shot dead dozens of supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi on Saturday, witnesses said, days after the army chief called for a popular mandate to wipe out “violence and terrorism”. Men in helmets and black police fatigues fired on crowds gathered before dawn on the fringes of a round-the-clock sit-in near a mosque in northeast Cairo, Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood said. “They are not shooting to wound, they are shooting to kill,” said Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad. “The bullet wounds are in the head and chest.”A Muslim Brotherhood website said 120 people had been killed and some 4,500 injured. A Reuters reporter counted 36 bodies at one morgue, while health officials said there were a further 21 corspes in two nearby hospitals. Activists rushed bloodspattered casualties into a makeshift hospital, some were carried in on planks or blankets. One ashen teenager was laid out on the floor, a bullet hole in his head. Egypt’s interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim told reporters only 21 had

died and denied police had opened fire, accusing the Brotherhood of exaggerating for political ends. Ibrahim said local residents living close to the Rabaa al-Adawia mosque vigil had clashed with protesters in the early hours after they had blocked off a major road bridge. He said that police had used teargas to try to break up the fighting. Well over 200 people have been killed in violence since the army toppled Morsi on July 3, following huge protests against his year in power. The army denies accusations it staged a coup, saying it intervened to prevent national chaos. The Arab world’s most populous state is battling economic woes and struggling with the transition to democracy two years after Hosni Mubarak was swept from power in the Arab Spring.Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians had poured onto the streets on Friday in response to a call by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for nationwide demonstrations to give him backing to confront the weeks-long wave of violence. His appeal was seen as a challenge to the Brotherhood, which organized its own rallies on Friday call-

US-Japanese partnership at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They say they can make mice remember a traumatic event that never happened. According to lead author Susumu Tonegawa of MIT, the method involves recognizing the brain cells that are changed physically and chemically during the formation of a memory, known as an engram. “Whether it’s a false or genuine memory, the brain’s neural mechanism underlying the recall of the memory is the same,” explained Tonegawa, a 1987 Nobel laureate and direc-

prosecutor, who is reviewing complaints from local residents unhappy with the huge encampment on their doorstep. The Brotherhood is a highly organized movement with grassroots support throughout Egypt, making it hard to silence

even if the army decides to mount a bigger crackdown. European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she “deeply deplores” Saturday’s deaths and urged all sides to halt the violence. There was no immediate comment from the United States, which

Then, they placed the mice in Box B and reactivated the secure memory while delivering a shock to the mice’s feet. When researchers returned the mice to Box A, they froze, exhibiting a common fear response, signifying they remembered something bad happening there, even though it had not. Scientists also observed they could reactivate the false memory at will by manipulating the light pulses to the part of the brain where the memory was stored. Even more, they could see the false memory aroused other parts of the brain, such as the amygdala, where active fear responses are based. “To the animal, the false memory seems to have felt like a ‘real’ memory,” said co-author Xu Liu. Learning how to turn on false memories may also help scientists figure out how to turn off, or erase, bad ones, he added. According to Bill Klemm, senior professor of neuro-

science at Texas A&M University, the research could help treat conditions like post-traumatic stress. “False memory is a big deal. It comes up in criminal trials and post-traumatic stress syndrome, all sorts of things. “This paper is important in the sense that here is an animal model where you can do things you can’t do in people,” said Klemm, who was not involved in the research. However, the study offers only a preliminary glance at how these processes may work in humans, since the lives of lab mice are much less complicated, and the memory span studied was short, he added. “There was only a oneday interval in between each condition,” Klemm told AFP. “In a real world situation, like eyewitnesses at a crime or something, days or weeks or months may elapse between the different contexts and a lot of intervening things may happen.” Elizabeth Loftus, a

distinguished professor of psychology at the University of California - Irvine, said she found the research “kind of exciting,” because it appears to answer a key question raised by critics. “When you work with humans you do have a concern about what we in psychology call demand characteristics -- the idea that humans are giving you the response they think you

would like to hear,” she told AFP. “That is probably not true for mice.” Besides, not all false memories are harmful. Loftus said this flexibility allows humans to self-correct after misremembering something, and even helps plan for the future. “Even without external influence, people remember that their grades were better than they were, or that they voted in elec-

Stressful events can often coincide with the creation of false memories, scientists said.

WAsHINGtON, JULY 27 (AFP): Stressful events can often coincide with the creation of false memories, when people recall things that never happened, and scientists said Thursday they are learning more about this curious phenomenon. A better understanding of false memories could help treat post-traumatic stress and possibly cut back on inaccurate eyewitness testimony that jails innocent people, experts say. The latest advances in studying manipulated memories in the lab were reported in the journal Science by researchers in a

Washington has delayed delivery of four F-16 fighters because of the turmoil, however, officials have indicated they do not intend to cut off aid to a country seen as a vital ally and which has a peace deal with neighboring Israel. Witnesses said police first fired rounds of teargas at Brotherhood protesters gathered on a boulevard leading away from the Rabaa mosque, with live shots ringing out soon afterwards. “There were snipers on the rooftops, I could hear the bullets whizzing past me,” said Ahmed el Nashar, 34, a business consultant, choking back his tears. “Man, people were just dropping.” Dr. Ibtisam Zein, overseeing the Brotherhood morgue, said most of the dead were hit in the head, some between the eyes. The bodies were wrapped in white sheets and laid on the floor, their names scrawled on the shrouds. A cleaner busily mopped the floor, washing away pools of blood. Haddad said the Brotherhood remained committed to pursuing peaceful protests, despite Saturday’s deaths - the second mass

tor of the RIKEN-MIT Center for Neural Circuit Genetics. “Our experiments provide the first animal model in which false and genuine memories can be investigated at the memory engram level.” Tonegawa and colleagues showed they could identify the cells for a specific memory in the hippocampus of mice and program the engram to respond to pulses of light, known as optogenetics. Researchers placed the mice in a peaceful place, Box A, and isolated the animals’ brain signature of that secure setting.

shooting of its supporters this month by security forces, who killed 53 people on July 8. Brotherhood activists at Rabaa said they would not be cowed and warned of worse bloodshed if the security forces did not back down. “We will stay here until we die, one by one,” said Ahmed Ali, 24, helping treat casualties at the field hospital. “We have the examples of Algeria and Syria in our minds. We don’t want it to become a civil war. If we take up arms it might become one. This is a religious belief.” There was little mention of the violence on Egypt’s two state television channels, which broadcast weather reports and a talk show on Saturday morning. All three state newspapers headlined their morning editions with Friday’s rallies, saying Egyptians had given Sisi the support he had asked for. “The people give the army and the police a mandate to confront terrorism,” said a strap headline on the bottom of a broadcast on the state’s Nile TV. Ibrahim said Morsi, who has not been seen in public since his removal from power, was likely to be transferred shortly to the same Cairo prison where former leader Mubarak is now held.

tions that they didn’t vote in, or that their kids walked and talked at an earlier age than they really did,” she said. “These self-enhancing memory distortions allow people to feel better about themselves.” MIT researchers said they are planning more study of how false memories are created, and whether they can extend to memories for objects, food, or even companions.

Pallekele: South African spinner Robin Peterson bowled the second most expensive over in one-day cricket when he conceded 35 runs against Sri Lanka on Friday. Left-hander Thisara Perera hit five sixes and a boundary in the 33rd over sent down by Peterson in the third one-day international in Pallekele. With the second ball declared a wide, the 35 runs taken in the over fell just one run short of the world record of six sixes hit by South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs off Dutch bowler D. van Bunge during the 2007 World Cup. Perera's run sequence in the over was six, a wide, six, six, six, four and a six. Pallekele, July 27 (aFP): David Miller and Lonwabo Tsotsobe played key roles as South Africa stunned hosts Sri Lanka by 56 runs in the third onedayer in Pallekele on Friday to stay afloat in the fivematch series. Miller plundered a robust 85 not out off 72 balls to steer South Africa to 223-7 after unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis had reduced the tourists to 154-7 in the 42nd over. Tsotsobe then ripped through Sri Lanka's top order with three wickets in the space of six runs before finishing with 4-22 as the hosts were bundled out for 167 in the day-night game. The victory ended

South Africa's 11-match losing streak in one-day cricket on Sri Lankan soil and gave AB de Villiers' tourists a badly-needed win in the current series. With Sri Lanka 2-1 ahead, South Africa must also win the fourth match at the same venue on Sunday to take the series into the decider in Colombo next Wednesday. Thisara Perera lit up the gloomy evening for the hosts by smashing five sixes and a boundary in the 33rd over sent down by left-arm spinner Robin Peterson. With the second ball declared a wide, the 35 runs taken in the over fell just one run short of the world record of six sixes hit

by South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs off Dutch bowler Daan van Bunge during the 2007 World Cup. Perera's run sequence in the over was six, a wide, six, six, six, four and a six, but his sensational hitting came too late for the hosts to deliver an unlikely win. Left-handed Perera made 65 off 49 balls with five sixes and as many

boundaries, before he was caught in the deep off Farhaan Behardien, who finished with three for 19. Sri Lanka paid the penalty for a shoddy batting display in which six batsmen failed to reach double figures and only two others entered their 20s. Earlier, Miller hit five sixes and four boundaries to boost the total from 100-

"We have seen the result in Ajit Wadekar team winning three series in 1971. With due respect to Wadekar, I am saying that the seeds were sown by Pataudi," he added. Bedi rated Sir Girfield Sobers as the greatest cricketer along with Sir Donald Bradman. "I am fortunate to have bowled to Sir Sobers. He was the ultimate cricketer. Two people -- Sobers and Bradman -would not emerge in world cricket again." Talking on a panel alongside India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Bedi was all praise for the side especially after their Champions Trophy triumph. "It's a great time for Indian cricket. We have good players and spinners like Ashwin. He has everything in him to become the go-to man for the Indian cricket."

Barcelona, July 27 (aFP): Teenage pool star Missy Franklin is relishing tackling eight events when swimming`s world championships start on Sunday as the sport adjusts to life after Michael Phelps. Having quit after London 2012, where he collected a record 18th Olympic gold medal, Phelps, 28, will only be a spectator during the eight days of swimming`s world championships in Barcelona. The 18-year-old Franklin will be looking to emulate Phelps, who won eight golds at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, as she tackles a punishing programme. Franklin`s schedule includes the 100 and 200m freestyle, all three backstroke events over 50, 100 and 200m and all three relays -- eight events in total. "It`s definitely a lot, but I am very excited, these are some of my favourite races," Franklin said on Friday. Should she win all her events, she will manage something even Phelps failed to pull off -- no swimmer, male or female, has ever won eight golds at a world championships. Having won four golds at the 2012 Olympics, and three at the 2011 world championships in Shanghai, Franklin has been working on her 100m and 200m freestyle, where she finished fifth and fourth respectively in London.

5 after South Africa had won the toss and elected to take first strike. Skipper AB de Villiers led the recovery with 47, before left-handed Miller pushed the scoring with his fifth one-day half-century, the first by a South African in the series. Miller put on 69 for the eighth wicket with Ryan McLaren, who remained unbeaten on 14.

london, July 27 (aP): Sprinter Tyson Gay failed more than one drug test this year, recording one of his positives at the US championships in June, where he won the 100 and 200 meters, the agency learned on Friday. Earlier this month, Gay revealed he had tested positive in an out-of-competition test he took on May 16. Three people familiar with the case told that Gay had multiple positives this year. One of those people said one positive came at nationals and the US AntiDoping Agency has notified him of that result. One person familiar with the case told that multiple positives over a short period of time are a sign of an athlete who wasn't trying to hide anything, but simply didn't know he was taking a banned drug. The people did not want their names used because the doping case against Gay is ongoing and the details have not been made public. Gay's representatives did not immediately respond to attempts by the agency to reach them. The sprinter has already surrendered his spot at next month's world championships. If a positive test from nationals is confirmed by his "B" sample, those results would be vacated, though it's likely they would be anyway because of his May 16 positive. A first-time offense for doping usually brings with it a two-year ban, though athletes who cooperate with USADA sometimes get reduced penalties. Gay is cooperating with USADA. "The additional positive sample is consistent with him taking responsibility," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said. "He should be commended for that and for removing himself from world championships, which we all should appreciate. The sample was expected, as he works with us for the fair resolution based on the rules, given the fact of his case." When Gay admitted to the earlier positive in a phone interview nearly two weeks ago, he fought back tears. "I don't have a sabotage story. I don't have any lies. I don't have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake or it was on USADA's hands, someone playing games," he said. "I don't have any of those stories. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down."

FILE - In this June 23, 2013, file photo, Tyson Gay runs to the finish line to win the senior men's 200-meter dash final at the U.S. Championships athletics meet in Des Moines, Iowa. Gay failed more than one drug test this year, recording one of his positives at the U.S. championships, where he won the 100 and 200 meters in June, The Associated Press learned on Friday, July 26. (AP Photo)

Since news of his positive, media reports have linked Gay to Clayton Gibson, an anti-aging doctor based in Atlanta. In an email sent to him, Gibson would not confirm Gay was among his patients. Gay has been the mostwatched US male sprinter for the past several years and has long sold himself as a clean athlete. The 30-year-old, who won the world championship in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay in 2007, took part in USADA's "My Victory" program - in which athletes volunteer for enhanced testing to prove they're clean - and his results never raised red flags. Until, that is, the outof-competition test in May.

'Sachin Tendulkar must score in Franklin eager to tackle eight at worlds South Africa to earn back respect'

london, July 27 (agencies): Former left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi on Saturday said that Sachin Tendulkar should be aware of his prolonged lean patch, and must score during India's Test series against South Africa, if he wanted to retain the respect of the cricket loving public in India and in other parts of the world. "It's high time that he (Tendulkar) should get back to runs to get people's respect," said Bedi. Bedi said getting 10 wickets in a Test match is like scoring hundreds in each innings. "Even a player of Tendulkar's calibre has not done it, so it's an enormous achievement," Bedi said recalling his only 10-wicket haul in Perth. The 66-year-old hailed former India captain Sourav Ganguly and said

the Bengal cricketer contributed enormously to the rise of the Indian cricket. "Like in the present day, we are reading so much about Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but the present day cricket was set up by Sourav Ganguly. He has made an enormous contribution to Indian cricket. It has just been taken forward by Dhoni in a calm manner. Calmness is Dhoni's greatest quality. Indian cricket always had ups and downs but now it seems reasonably stable," Bedi said. Comparing Ganguly with late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Bedi said, "I honestly feel that Tiger Pataudi was the greatest thing to have happened to the Indian cricket. He brought the sense of Indianness to the dressing room. Winning as a habit was cultivated by Tiger Pataudi."

"I was thrilled with how I did in London and exceeded my expectations there," said the teenager. "I`ve been training hard and working on the small things, so I am hoping it will all come off as the races happen." Franklin spearheads a youthful US team which will again be looking to top the medal table. Other candidates to shine include Franklin`s USA compatriot Ryan Lochte, 28, who left London with two golds and silvers, and has 12 world gold medals in his collection dating back to 2005. South Africa`s Olympic champions, 100m breaststroke star Cameron van

der Burgh and 200m butterfly gold medalist Chad le Clos, will be looking to bring more swim success to their country. Australia`s James "The Missile" Magnussen will be defending his 100m freestyle world title with his team seeking redemption after under-achieving in London and an ensuing tumultuous 12 months. Their 2012 campaign was Australian swimming`s first Games without an individual gold medal since Montreal in 1976 and their worst overhaul haul -- of one gold medal, six silver and three bronze -- since 1992 in Barcelona.

Two independent inquiries into what went wrong in London pointed to a squad lacking leadership and found "toxic" incidents such as drunkenness and bullying had gone unchecked. As a consequence, Australia will send their smallest team in eight years to the world championships. Magnussen is targeting both the 50m and 100m events in Barcelona, while five-time London Olympic medalist Alicia Coutts, who like Franklin faces a busy schedule having qualified for five individual events plus the prospect of swimming in three relay teams.

Results came back positive for a banned substance, the identity of which he has not been revealed. The latest news adds to a slew of negative headlines for athletics. Jamaican Olympic champion, Veronica Campbell-Brown, tested positive for a banned diuretic at a meet on the island in May. A month later, Asafa Powell, the former 100-meter world record holder, tested positive for a stimulant at Jamaica's national championships, as did his teammate, Sherone Simpson, a three-time Olympic medalist. In a recent statement, Powell said he had "retained legal counsel" and couldn't "discuss all the details of the case."

Ronaldo is a phenomenon: Ancelotti

Madrid, July 27 (agencies): Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has described Cristiano Ronaldo as a "phenomenon" and a cut above anything he has ever previously worked with. The new Blancos coach, who arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu from Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer, was speaking ahead of his side`s Guinness International Champions Cup campaign. And when quizzed on the credentials of the Portuguese, Ancelotti was more than glowing in his appraisal of the 28-year-old. "I`ve trained tons of talented players," Ancelotti said. "But Ronaldo is a phenomenon. He has an incredible talent, physical quality, and I`m extremely happy to be able to coach him. "He`s very professional, and I`m convinced he`s going to have a great season." Ronaldo finished second in the Liga scoring charts last season, netting 34 goals in 34 matches. Only Ballon d`Or winner Lionel Messi scored more, tallying 46 times. Real Madrid kick off their involvement in the ICC with a match against the LA Galaxy at University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona on Aug 1 and face Paris SaintGermain in a friendly in Sweden on Sunday.

President Barack Obama’s documentarian Amy Rice has signed up to direct Lindsay Lohan’s reality TV show. Amy - who directed the 2009 documentary ‘By the People: The Election of Barack Obama’ - will go behind the camera for the eight-part documentary for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network, which is set to air in 2014, the network announced at the TCA (Television Critic’s Association) press tour. OWN president Erik Logan said: ‘’Part of what makes this opportunity very exciting because I don’t think it’s gonna be anything that anybody expects. ‘’We have a great partner with Lindsay’s manager and her team. The series will focus on the ‘Mean Girls’ star’s past struggles with addictions and fame, as well as her film career and her hopes for the future. The actress is said to have signed the deal with Oprah at the Betty Ford Clinic even before she was properly on the road to recovery. Lindsay’s mother Dina is thrilled her daughter is set to follow in the footsteps of Lance Armstrong and Rihanna by being given a chance to tell Oprah her story. She recently gushed: ‘’Oh, it’s fantastic. If anyone is going to help mentor you, it’s going to be Oprah.’’

buDaPeST, JuLy 27 (aFP): Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes on Saturday edged out defending champion and season leader Sebastian Vettel to claim his fourth pole position of the season for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton pulled out a best lap of 1min 19.388sec to land his third straight pole and the 30th of his career with Red Bull's Vettel timing 1.19.426. Frenchman Romain Grosjean in a Lotus was

third fastest to take his place on the second row of the grid. It was 2008 champion Hamilton's fourth pole at the Hungaroring circuit. The 28-year-old Briton pulled off his fastest lap right at the conclusion of a closely-fought session, having battled handling and balance problems on Friday with the new Pirelli tyres. Hamilton's latest gambit lifted him beyond five-time champion Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio

to a career total of 30 poles. He himself appeared surprised at the feat after he squeezed ahead of defending triple world champion German Sebastian Vettel at the front of the grid. "Are we on pole?" he asked on his slowing down lap. "Yeah and we are as surprised as you, mate!" responded his race engineer. "Brilliant job, Lewis," said team chief Ross Brawn. "There wasn't much in it," said Vettel,

who nonetheless praised Hamilton. "Lewis did an exceptional job today - you have to hand it to him." But the German, seeking a first career win in Hungary, stressed: "I am still in a good position for tomorrow and we have a good car for the race." German Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes was fourth fastest ahead of two-time champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, who outpaced 2007

Kaltenborn 'relieved' at Sauber deal

LONDON, JuLy 27 (ageNcIeS): Monisha Kaltenborn says she was "relieved" to agree a deal with Russian investors which appears to secure Sauber's future. It was announced last week that Sauber had agreed a deal with three Russian companies - two of which have close ties to the government - with part of the agreement seeing Russian driver Sergey Sirotkin being prepared for a race seat in 2014. With Sauber having been open about its financial problems before the deal was announced, Kaltenborn said how the deal will be implemented is yet to be decided but said it was a relief to get the partnerships agreed. "The very first thing that has already taken place now that we have our contracts in place is that we were very happy and relieved," Kaltenborn said. "We are now focusing on starting

the implementation of this co-operation because it's a very complex and comprehensive deal. The major part of it is focusing on technology and we know from our previous experience which we had with Petronas in the past that you really have to go in to a lot of detail and you have to set out long-term plans because this is something that is a long-term co-operation. That's what we're doing right now." With the team's future uncertain prior to the announcement, Kaltenborn was reluctant to say Sauber's survival hinged on the deal. "It wouldn't be right for us to think in the way that 'If we don't get this deal done we cannot survive or not'. We're in here, we've gone through tough times before and we know that we can survive. It's just a question of do you want to survive or do you really want to

stably stay here and hopefully again at some point in time - the sooner the better - make the step ahead. "That was our focus and we knew that if this deal comes through in this way we have that basis on the long term to really make our way up again. That's what is going to happen now, step-by-step." Kaltenborn added she is confident the new partners will deliver what they have promised. "I certainly have no reasons to believe that [the deal won't happen] … we know what we are talking about and we have good reasons to believe in it."

Bolt clocks seasons best in 100m

C M Y K

LONDON, JuLy 27 (TNN): The world's fastest man Usain Bolt converted a lacklustre start into the season's best run, as he returned to London to win the 100 metres in front of a euphoric 65,000 strong crowd on the first night of the anniversary games. Bolt let out an ominous warning to his rivals ahead of next month's World Championships in Moscow by clocking a season-best 9.85 seconds. The 26-year-old, sixtimes Olympic gold medallist who kicked off the Games by taking a lap around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Stadium on top of a mock missile ship converted a poor start into a late burst to finish ahead of American Michael Rodgers (9.98 seconds) and fellow countryman Nesta Carter (9.99). Bolt said after the race, "I love coming here. The fans give you so much energy and this is what makes me run faster." He added "I am pleased with the time I did even if I was a little slow off the blocks and I had to play catch up. There is a lot of room for improvement. I am getting there and Moscow is going to be great". Hysteria broke out in the stadium as Bolt walked out onto the track in the last and final competition of the first day of the anniversary games. The stadium sparkled with camera flash lights as crowds broke into a deafening cheer. The only disappointment however was that the head to head between Bolt and the second fastest Briton ever, James Dasaolu didn't materialize due to the latter picking up a tight hip

flexor in warm up. Bolt entertained the sell-out crowd with his trademark pose after crossing the line a comfortable winner in 9.85. Despite a poor start, the Jamaican finished 13 hundredths ahead of American Mike Rodgers thanks to a very strong second 50 metres. Dwain Chambers finished fifth in 10.10, and he added "It was amazing being back here again, that was like my

Olympic final". Bolt ended his victory lap around the stadium by throwing his pair of running spikes into the crowd. Other than the Olympics, Bolt has never raced in Britain since 2009 because of tax rules which forced him to give up a share of any appearance or prize money, plus a cut of any endorsements. However, Britain decided to exempt non-resident athletes from

income tax to ensure the six-time Olympic champion agreed to race at the Park. The three day games will see 29 Olympic medallists, including 12 champions and four world record holders return to London. Bolt, who ran the 100m on Friday and will race the 4x100m on Saturday is using the London event as a warm up before the IAAF World Championships in Moscow in August.

Bolt, who repeated his Olympic treble winning feat from Beijing at last summer's London 2012 Games, is excited by the prospect of returning to The Stadium where he won three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and as a part of the world record breaking 4x100m Jamaican relay team. Bolt had earlier said "I'm just here to do my best and prove to the world that it is possible to run clean and run hard".
