Nagaland is not an integral part of India: NNC/FGN DimaPuR, June 29 (mexn): The NNC/FGN has termed Minister for Youth Resource & Sports, Merentoshi Jamir’s speech where he “urged students to spread the message that Nagaland as well as other North Eastern states is an integral part of India” as “perplexing and misguiding.” In a press note issued by the Ministry of Rali Wali, the NNC/FGN stated, “It is a verifiable truth that Indians forcefully occupied Nagaland; a fact known to the Indians and the world.” It added that Nagas have never been an integral part of India and “in account of which thousands of lives were sacrificed defending our historical, political and geographical rights.” The note also said that the “suppression of those rights by the Indians in the past has led to the long torturous history of unspeakable violence and crueltyrape, murder, arson, raids, massacres and torture.” It lamented that the present generation remains obscure to these “atrocities and afflictions.” It questioned as to whether the Minister’s statement was his personal opinion or “if it had been swayed by the NPF led by DAN Government.” It further advised the Minister to ascertain facts before addressing publicly.

VaTiCan CiTY, June 29 (aP): Pope Francis told prelates Saturday to shun the “logic of human power,” pressing his campaign to root out corruption and other wrongdoing from the Vatican’s scandal-tainted power structures. The admonition came a day after the latest embarrassment for the Vatican hierarchy -the arrest by Italian authorities of a Vatican accountant, in a probe of an alleged attempt by the prelate to secure the smuggling of 20 million euros ($26 million) in banknotes from Switzerland into Italy. Francis is making reforms aimed at ensuring his papacy’s priorities, which include paying more attention to the world’s poor and concentrating on cultivating spiritual, not material, wealth.

K’kulam n-power project to be up soon foothill road:

KolKaTa, June 29 (ianS): The much-delayed Kudankulam nuclear power project will become operational soon, India’s principal scientific advisor said Saturday. “The decision will come anytime now. Reactor is a safe reactor... no question about it... it is designed with safety features. It depends on the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to examine the test results and decide,” R. Chidambaram told reporters on the sidelines of the 120th birth anniversary of P.C. Mahalanobis at the Indian Statistical Institute here. “The job of the regulatory board is to examine everything they do. Nuclear Power Corp gives the results and regulatory board decides when to give the go ahead depending whether further tests are necessary or not,” Chidambaram said. He also stressed on the need to convey to common people the statistical estimate of the safety of nuclear establishments. “For all practical purposes, nuclear power is safe. Common people have difficulty in understanding

probabilistic safety assessment and analysis. India has an excellent safety record... with so many years in operation... absolutely clean safety record,” the scientist added. Observing that there could be no compromise on safety, the Supreme Court recently lashed out at the Tamil Nadu government for being lethargic in putting in place a plan for the evacuation of people in the event of an accident at

the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. The apex court frowned at the attitude of the state government while hearing a petition seeking to restrain the central government from operationalising KNPP-I and II in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district. The petition said that before operationalising the units, the safety measures, including 17 recommended by a task force set up by the Nuclear Power Cor-

poration of India Limited (NPCIL), should be put in place. India’s atomic power plant operator, NPCIL, is building two 1,000 MW reactors with Russian help at Kudankulam since 2001. Villagers under the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy banner have been opposing the project for the past two years, fearing for their safety, especially since the nuclear disaster at Fukushima in Japan in March 2011.

The Nagaland government has announced a proposal to construct a futuristic allweather, four-lane motorway traversing the foothills bordering Assam, which will directly connect Mon to Peren via Dimapur. Making an announcement is easier said, but actually getting the plan to work is an altogether different story. The realisation of this ambitious project is in all likelihood years away, if not decades. While the government sits on the proposal, there arises an all important need for coming up with a workable alternative for the interim or till such time the four-lane road takes shape. For the record, murmurs for the urgent need of a functional foothill road have been whirling about for decades, only, never going beyond the four walls of a room. As fate would have it, the recent May 24 incident in Mariani proved to

bandh. It stated that “any individual ignoring the fervent appeal of the students’ community will be doing so at their own peril and for which, the federation will not be held responsible.” The NSF said that the intention of the proposed total bandh is to express “strong resentment against the incessant clashes and killings amongst the underground factions, imposition of illegal taxation by the Naga UGs, against all arbitrary harassment and threatening the lives of innocent civilians and also the recent attempt on life of federation official.” It was also informed that administration, security personnel, emergency medical services and media would be exempted from the purview of the bandh.

DNSU extends cooperation

DimaPuR, June 29 (mexn): The Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA) inaugurated a fourth Legal Aid Clinic today at Dimapur district’s Kuhoboto sub-division. “This Legal Aid Clinic has been opened to provide free-of-cost legal aid to people with an income of Rs. 1 Lakh or below,” stated Dimapur District and Sessions Judge S. Hukato Swu, Secretary of DDLSA and chief guest for its inaugural program held at Kuhoboto Town Hall. Three other such clinics have been set up at Central Jail, Sub Jail and Niuland. The ‘Clinic’ at Kuhoboto is meant for a cluster of 24 villages in the area. It will engage two paralegals to disseminate information on “socially benevolent legislations” like the Right to Infor-

mation (RTI), Motor Vehicles Act, Senior Citizens Act, etc. It will then help poor people to get an advocate through the state, who will pursue their case free of cost. “Our target is to reach the unreached so that no one suffers injustice for reasons of poverty. We want to reach out to the rural areas where people cannot easily access justice,” explained Swu, who spoke to the audience in Sema. Both male and female participants attended the program in equal numbers. Speaking on the occasion was Dimapur Chief Judicial Magistrate M.T. (Azi) Therieh, also the Deputy Secretary of DDLSA. “Whether we like it or not, till we get an alternative arrangement or solution, Article 371 (a) will have to apply. Without this, our vil-

be a blessing in disguise. It sparked a movement, not ‘for bringing the culprits to book’ but a mass movement for development seldom seen before. The movement took the form of several tribes coming together with eyes set on making the Foothill Road dream come true. On June 29, a consultative meeting of representatives from nine tribes, namely – Konyak, Phom, Ao, Lotha, Sumi, Yimchunger, Chang, Sangtam and Khiamniungan took place in Dimapur aimed at hammering out strategies to take the movement forward. Four pressing points were put up for discussion at the conclave. It included land compensation, (underground) taxation, preventing

lage councils cannot derive power,” she said, touching upon the Nagaland Village Council Act. Therieh highlighted that the village authority’s functions are executive as well as judicial, which is why their powers have to be exercised with restraint. “Judicial powers of the village authority are clearly defined in law. If there is a murder or rape in your village, an FIR should be filed at the nearest police station, not taken to a customary court. The village authority can take up cases of theft, trespass or other mischief but its power cannot be exerted on ALL cases, nor does it have the authority to imprison anyone,” she clarified, while challenging the audience to think about the relevance of customary laws in today’s changing

the movement from taking a political tone, and the concept of the road should be within the definition of ‘foothill’ i.e. it should run along the foothills as envisaged. With regard to compensation for land owners, the tribal representatives assured that it will not come in the way of the proposed road. There was also a unanimous no to underground taxation for this particular project. The representatives also made it clear that the construction of the road should not be politicised and that it should be within the definition of ‘Foothill’. While doing so, the house maintained that making the shortest possible and the most convenient route between Mon and Dimapur must top the agenda. In the event the government fails to live up to its assurance made on June 10 last, it was asserted that the people will do everything within their means to start work on the road, even to the extent of raising funds. NSF calls for support to July 1 bandh Dimapur gets fourth Legal Aid Clinic DimaPuR, June 29 (mexn): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), while appreciating civil societies for extending their cooperation to the protest rally on June 28, urged the public for continued support to the ‘total bandh’ called by the NSF on July 1 from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. A press note from the NSF General Secretary, Esther Rhakho informed that the proposed ‘total bandh’ would restrict all vehicular and pedestrian movement, any form of functions, programs or events. The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union extended its “fullest cooperation” to the NSF’s ‘total bandh’ call on July 1. The Office of the DNSU through a press note from its President and General Secretary appealed to the public concerned, educational institutions and business establishments to co-operate and support the Union for the said total bandh. While informing the public that the bandh will be strictly imposed on vehicular movement, pedestrian, and government and private functions, the DNSU stated that Administration, Police, Security Force, Medical Emergency, Fire Brigade, Power Department on duty and Media Fraternity would be exempted from the purview of the bandh.

On executive powers (distribution of central funds for development works) of the village council, Therieh said that the village council should oversee the proper distribution and use of central funds, irrespective of political affiliation. “To make a strong village, a village council needs to be strong. If funds correspond to proper development of the village, everyone will gain,” she reiterated. Other advocates present spoke on RTI, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Right of an arrested person. This was followed by a question-answer session, addressed by Swu. A booklet titled ‘Lesson in Law for Students’ published by the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority was distributed to those present.

bers monitored by 7 administrators. Recent years have seen an increase in interest for anime movies and series creating a wave among the young generation. Anime (short for Japanese animēshiyon) is a style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or fu-

turistic themes. Cosplay (kosupure), short for “costume play”, is a type of performance art in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea from a work of fiction. Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture centered on role play. A broader use of the term cosplay applies to any costumed role play in venues apart from

the stage, regardless of the cultural context. Favorite sources include Manga, anime, comic books, video games, and films. Any entity from the real or virtual world that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject. Inanimate objects are given anthropomorphic forms and it is not unusual to see genders switched, with women playing male roles and vice versa.

new Delhi, June 29 (aGenCieS): Indian Railways on Friday launched SMS-based ticketing system to tackle the rush at the booking counters. Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) launched the ticket booking which can be done through noninternet based mobile. Government is hoping that this new system will help overcome the menace of touts who fleece unsuspecting people. But have you tried to book the ticket by SMS? Here’s five easy ways that will help you book a ticket by using your ordinary mobile phone. First: Register your mobile number with your bank. The bank will provide a mobile money Identifier (MMId) and onetime password (OTP) for authorization of payment. Second: After getting the MMid and OTP, now you can book your ticket. For booking, type an SMS with all your travel details like train number, date of journey, boarding station and

destination and Class of travel, besides name, age and gender of the passenger. The SMS should be sent to 139 or 5676714. Third: On receiving the SMS, the IRCTC will send a transaction ID. The passenger has to reply to the SMS with PAY followed by the transaction ID and the bank password (OTP). Fourth: This confirms booking and the ticket amount will be deducted from your bank account. Fifth: On successful booking of ticket, a message will be sent to the user by IRCTC which will be sufficient as the valid travel document along with photo ID card in original. Please check the IRCTC link for further queries like seat availability, Schedule, time table, PNR status. NOTE: First: The SMS scheme will not be available during 8 am12 pm for booking ARP/tatkal/ general tickets. Speaking after inaugurating the school building, Nungshila commended the efforts of the Naharbari community in getting involved with the school and said it was a good sign. She noted that the infrastructure would not have been completed without the help of the community. Such approach shows that the village authorities and its citizens know their responsibilities, she added. Talking on the RTE Act, the DEO said it was unfortunate that many parents and guardians had taken advantage of the provision in the Act which stated that the students would not be detained. Owing to this, she said, many parents and guardians were laid back in sending the students regularly to schools. “But how do we promote the students if they do not know anything,” the DEO queried and urged the community

FATYCM against Mnp govt’s ‘hasty decision’ iMPhAl, June 29 (nnn): Federation of All Tribal Youth Clubs, Manipur (FATYCM) on Saturday condemned the ‘hasty decision’ of Manipur Cabinet to 'take over' the sacred Royal Palace, saying the state Government appeared to be acting like the title-holder of the historical site. It is the onus of the state Government to refurbish the palace through ‘funding’ and then handing over the task to the Sana Konung Semgat Sagat Lup or other bodies working for preservation of the palace, FATYCM said.

It stated that the Government should honor the Sana Konung and take care of it by means of backing only and flayed the former for purportedly being ‘acquisitive.’ At the same time, the tribal youth federation said that the demand for introduction of Inner Line Permit in Manipur is feasible as enshrined in the Indian Constitution. It added that the Manipur lies along the international borderand is a budding state, as a result of which it is essential to stop the influx of migrants or

immigrants into the state from other states of the country as well as neighboring countries. For this, it added that ILP under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873 must be introduced in the state almost immediately. Expressing apprehension that the people of the state might become second class citizens of the country in near future, it called for immediate implementation of ILP system in Manipur saying New Delhi and the state Government cannot deny the legitimate demand.

World body issues alert over Mizoram outbreak AizAwl, June 29 (enS): The Paris-based World Organisation for Animal Health, or OIE, has issued a disease alert to its member-countries about the ongoing Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) outbreak in Mizoram. The OIE said in its alert that "the outbreak was confirmed initially as classical swine fever. Samples were sent to the laboratory. The presence of PRRS virus was also diagnosed". "Since this is the first time that Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome is identified in the history of the country, the reason for notification as first occurrence applies to the country but the event is in fact circumscribed to a zone," it added. The PRRS virus was detected by two government laboratories — located in Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh — in samples from pigs that had died from the outbreak. Altogether, the state government has identified more than 3,800 pigs as having died after the outbreak began in March, with more than 5,600 pigs having fallen ill but later recovered. The Centre had recently directed the state to cull all affected pigs. KYKL militant nabbed

iMPhAl, June 29 (nnn): An over-ground militant worker of the Kanglei Yaon Kanna Lup (KYKL) was arrested by a combined team of 15 Assam Rifles and Thoubal District Police commandos from Yairipok Ngangbam Mayai Leikai under Yairipok Police Station in the wee hours of Saturday. Sanabam Boicha alias Devchand aged 21 was nabbed by the combined security forces from his house along with explosives at around 4:00 am during a search operation in the area, according to police sources. However, the flood situation might turn worst as water level in major rivers like Brahmaputra and Jia Bharali are still showing a rising trend at many places in the flood-hit districts. Garo Hills returning to normal: Meghalaya CM

ShillOnG, June 29 (Tnn): The situation in the Garo Hills, especially the violence-hit West and South districts, is returning to normal, chief minister Mukul Sangma said on Friday. "So far, everything is under control and we are happy that the people have been cooperating with the district administrations and most importantly, the communities across the border, both from Meghalaya and Assam, are engaging continuously," the chief minister told reporters after chairing a cabinet meeting. "There was information that people went across the border, did some shopping and came back and vice versa. On Saturday, we have a number of important markets and I am in touch with my district administrations," he said, adding that the market committees on both sides of the

inter-state boundary were in touch with each other to ensure peaceful weekly 'haats' (markets). He said the district administrations have ensured involvement of market committees to ensure that all the traders belonging to different communities in Assam have the confidence to come and complete the process of the weekly markets so that normal trading activities could take place. Stating that district administrations on both sides of the boundary, besides chief secretaries of the two neighbouring states were in touch, Mukul said, "At the highest level, we are in constant engagement". He expressed hope that the Assam government would also play its part in facilitating and sustaining normalcy in those areas in the neighbouring state from where there have

The main opposition Congress had suffered a humiliating defeat, managing only 10 seats in the 60-member house in the Feb 14 polls. The Congress's poll partners Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura and National Conference of Tripura drew blanks, contesting 10 seats and one seat, respectively. The Left Front comprising Communist Party of India-Marxist (49) and Communist Party of India (one) registered a resounding victory in the polls, winning 50 seats.

been reports of tension. "It is important for us to ensure that we maintain normalcy and sustain it in the best interest of all concerned," the CM said. Mukul added that a delegation of legislators, who have been touring the Garo Hills, also visited certain areas in Assam, including Dudhnoi, on Friday to interact with certain social activists and prominent citizens. Tension gripped the Garo Hills on June 21 last when a migrant worker was lynched by a mob in the wake of rumours of rape of a mentally challenged woman, whose subsequent medical test confirmed that she was not raped. Last Sunday, eight labourers were shot dead by armed assailants in a remote coal mine in South Garo Hills following which there was large-scale exodus of migrant labourers to neighbouring Assam.

Murdoch splits empire into two firms

to his newspaper roots. Murdoch has spent a lifetime building News Corp from a single Australian newspaper he inherited. As his empire was being built through a series of mergers and acquisitions, Murdoch also went through a series of unions and breakups in his personal life. Earlier this month, Murdoch filed papers to divorce his third wife Wendi Deng, citing an “irretrievably” broken marriage to a woman 38 years his junior. The divorce will not affect the way in which the media empire is run, as Deng does not have stock or voting rights in News Corp, sources familiar with the company said.

New York, JuNe 29 (AFP): Rupert Murdoch split his corporate empire into two parts on Friday under a long-promised plan to “unlock value” by separating high-flying entertainment operations from struggling publishing activities. The split became effective at the close of trade in New York, creating a new group called 21st Century Fox while retaining the name News Corp for the publishing group. Murdoch remains in charge of both. The 21st Century Fox group, which includes the Fox Hollywood studios and television entities, “launches as a unique force bringing news and entertainment to more than a billion customers every day in over 100 languages,” said Murdoch. “Our success will continue to be rooted in a deep belief in originality and a commitment to empowering creative minds and entrepreneurs around the world. “Our management teams are the best in the business and we will drive growth and shareholder value by expanding our existing assets and brands, while embracing new opportunities and technology.” The new News Corp, with Murdoch in the role of chairman, includes well-known newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Post in the US; The Sunday Times of London, Sunday

Telegraph and The Sun in Britain; and The Australian. It also includes Dow Jones news agency, Fox Sports Australia and the HarperCollins publishing house. “We are continuing a proud tradition and fashioning a prosperous future in the new News Corp,” chief executive Robert Thomson said. “We have a valuable collection of complementary companies and our task is to make the new News more than the sum of these distinguished parts.” New News Corp shares will

trade under the ticker symbols “NWSA” and “NWS,” starting on Monday. Shares in 21st Century Fox will trade under the symbols “FOXA” and “FOX.” The split of the company, with some $34 billion in revenues worldwide, is seen partly as a nod to shareholders angered by the damage and costs inflicted by a phone hacking scandal in Britain, and partly because of troubles within the group’s publishing arm. While some analysts see the outlook for publishing as bleak, Murdoch says he remains committed

CheNNAi, JuNe 29 (iANS): The countdown for the first midnight launch of an Indian navigation satellite on July 1 began on Saturday at Sriharikota rocket launch centre in Andhra Pradesh and is progressing smoothly, a senior official said. "The 64.5 hour countdown for India's first navigational satellite IRNSS-1A began at 7.11 a.m today (Saturday). It is progressing smoothly," told a senior official at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). According to the ISRO official, this is the first time India is launching a rocket from its soil around midnight - the rocket launch is fixed at 11.41 p.m. on Monday. "We have had late evening and early morning launches. But this is the first time ISRO is launching a rocket around midnight," the official said. He said ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan is expected to have a brief meeting with the media at the rocket port post launch which will be around 12.45 a.m on Tuesday. The official said the launch time

has been fixed taking into account the orbit and inclination at which the satellite will be injected. Around 20 minutes into the launch, the rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-XL (PSLV-XL) will eject the navigational satellite at an altitude of 501 km. According to ISRO, the 1,425 kg navigational satellite IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System)-1A is intended to provide terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation services and help in disaster and fleet management. The satellite with a life span of around 10 years is one of the seven satellites constituting the IRNSS space segment - a regional navigational system developed by India designed to provide accurate position information service to users within the country and up to 1,500 km from the nation's boundary line, ISRO said. The IRNSS will provide two types of services - standard positioning service and restricted service. The former is provided to all users and the later is an encrypted

service for authorised users. ISRO had planned to launch IRNSS-1A last month. But it had to put off after finding a problem in one of the electro-hydraulic control actuators in the second stage engine. The rocket was fully assembled with the satellite when the problem was detected during checks. The second stage had to be dismantled to replace the actuator which is an assembly of several components. It weighs around 20 kg. Following the Monday launch of navigational satellite, ISRO is planning to launch its communication satellite G-Sat 14 using a heavier rocket - Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) - powered with a domestic cryogenic engine some time in August this year. Preparatory work for the GSat 14 launch is going ahead at the rocket launch pad in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, around 80 km from here. It will be followed by the mission to Mars later this year. The launch of one more remote sensing satellite is also being planned before the end of the year.

AirAsia to begin operations in India this year CheNNAi, JuNe 29 (PTi): Malaysian lowcost carrier AirAsia today said its Indian operations should begin later this year with flights for southern region and the company would also look at setting up some ancillary businesses in the country. “We are hopeful of starting Indian operations later this year with three aircraft serving Southern region,” AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes told reporters here. The airline would expand its services to other parts of the country in the second stage, he said. AirAsia would also look at setting up ancillary

services like air travel insurance and duty free shops in the country, said Fernandes who came to Chennai this morning. AirAsia has already put in place a strong leadership team for its India operations, which is a joint venture with Tatas and Telestra Tradeplace. Former TCS chief S Ramadorai has been appointed Chairman, while top industry leader Ratan Tata has been named as chief adviser to the board of AirAsia India. Besides, R Venkataraman (former executive assistant to Ratan Tata) and Bharat Vasani (chief legal counsel of the Tata Group), are among

the directors on the board. AirAsia India is a joint venture of Air Asia, Tata Sons and Arun Bhatia of Telestra Tradeplace with 49:30:21 holding. AirAsia will be represented by Tony Fernandes and Kamarudin Bin Meranu. Last month, Fernandes had named Mittu Chandilya as the CEO of AirAsia India. AirAsia is expected to bring in competitive pricing in the Indian aviation market with its “nano” airfares. These announcements had come within days after Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said all the issues regarding AirAsia’s India applications had been resolved.

public discoursE The plight of the Rengma Nagas in Assam

T

he Rengma Nagas had always been harrassed, tortured, heavily taxed and even killed for no reason, cause or any guilt committed by the Rengma Nagas. The armed Karbi terrorists and with the help of the Karbi politicians and organisations, which is not acceptable and highly condemnable of their insanity and barbaric behaviour meted out towards the Rengma Nagas. On 9th June 2013, the self styled (KPLT) Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers etc had even unprecidented ultimatum served to the un -armed innocent villagers to identify Karbi tribe or leave Rengma Hills at gun point, which

is an act of cowardice that one or the other day, they may return to their ancestaral lost tribe who does not know who they are where they belong or exist. Every section of the civil society should seriously view and condemn such an in-human act treated by those outfits and also urge the Rengma people not to give away their rights by any means without the knowledge of the 'parent body' or else necessary steps will be initiated or dealt with and assured need of intelligetia to (RNPC) and defence strategy to safeguard our country and its people. Further, appeal to the Govt. of Assam

not to harbour KLPT terrorists who are trying to abrogate an age old Ahom-Naga relationship and ties and also revoke the 'nothing to do ultimatum' served by the second class outfit as demanded by the Rengma Hoho, Rengma Students Union, Rengma Mothers associations and all the Civil societies. Further, gratitude to all the individuals and organisations who stood by them with selfless moral and material support to the aggrieved villagers who were outcasted from their ancestral Home land. K. Request to withdraw MIP/GPRN threat to Thepfulhouvi Solo and two others

O

n Wednesday, 26 June 2013, you put up a Statement in the local News Papers of Nagaland under the Caption: “TO SET THE MATTER STRAIGHT” in which you threatened three of us -we happen to be from the same community- with: “high treason against the Naga Nation” and “crime against the Naga People’s”. It is shocking to see such a naked threat in the News Papers openly against non-armed, non-violent peaceful Citizens by a fearful, often violently armed Organization like yours. I have sometimes been a critique of the Chief Minister of Nagaland, the Government of Nagaland, the Ministers and the Bureaucrats; sometimes I criticized my own Baptist Church Organizations like the NBCC and the FNR in particular. However, I have never been threatened by the Chief Minister or by his Government nor by the Church with ‘Ex-communication’; neither my Pastor nor any of the Reverends of the Church have expressed any ill will against me. I have always received warm hand shake and warm smiling greeting faces from all of them though some Christian friends understandably and jokingly told me I have been an NBCC and FNRBasher. True, I have often criticized you but had also others too; and if I may, I would openly but truthfully express my feeling

that to me, of the necessary evils that all worldly National Organizations are, of the Naga National Council (NNC) or NSCN (IM), yours is more than others. Please excuse me if I have been too naked open. In modern civilized Society, everyone has the Freedom of Opinion just like you have yours and others have theirs: No one can claim Monopoly to Freedom or to Patriotism, not even you. I would not want to enter into needless debates with you on the question of “True or untrue Naga”; it may lead us to undesirable racial issues detrimental to political Groups like yours or to individuals like me. The history of what may be called ‘the Universal Naga’ migration to the present land where they inhabit indicates several routes and directions but I have always held: “any aboriginal Mongolian in the North East who considers himself/herself a Naga is a Naga”; beyond this, the road is slippery, unsafe and may even become divisive, if not abusive. I would request you to please withdraw the Threats you issued against three of us to enable us Peace of Mind and not appeal to Nagaland or to the Home Ministry, Government of India; for our Protection and Security. thepfulhouvi Solo

Cong says Rio’s ‘insecurity exposed’ Dimapur, June 29 (mexn): The Opposition Congress party in Nagaland has stated that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has “exposed his own insecurity arising out of his despotic grip on the affairs of the NPF party for the past decade”. The Congress has also forewarned the DAN legislators that “by blindly supporting Rio to perpetrate the loot of the state exchequer and propagate divisive agenda to rule the state, they are willfully writing their own political obituaries”. “The DAN legislators will therefore have to exercise their political wisdom for the sake of posterity before it is too little too late,” stated a press note issued by the Media Cell of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC). The NPCC made these statements while responding to the Chief Minister’s statement while addressing the Central

Executive Council meeting of the NPF. The Congress termed as unfortunate that the Chief Minister chose to indulge and comment on the internal affairs of the Congress party in the state, when matters of governance needs urgent attention with total breakdown of the state machinery under the NPF led DAN govt. “By taking potshots at the Congress, the Chief Minister has exposed his own insecurity arising out of his despotic grip on the affairs of the NPF party for the past decade,” it stated. Terming it as an established fact, the press note stated that the Congress party in Nagaland has been rooted through inner party democracy, where leaders starting from the lowest level are elected and every potential leader can aspire to grow and lead at one point or the other. “The NPF on the other hand functions

Dimapur, June 29 (mexn): MLA, 5 GhaspaniII A/C & Parliamentary Secretary, Urban Development Department, Zhaleo Rio was today honored by the Medziphema Village Council (MVC) for his successful venture into DAN-III government. At the event held in the village ground, Rio was all praise for the honor bestowed upon him by the village, informed press secretary of NPF, 5 Ghaspani – II A/C Thejangukho Yalietsu in a media release. In his speech, Rio expressed his vision to usher in positive change for the constituency and the state as a whole, but at the same time, requested land owners to have a heart in allocation of land towards development which would go a long way to solve unemployment problems and also uplift the area and its people. While calling the people to unite for a better tomorrow, he also stated that “overnight change” in developmental sphere is rarely possible, but patient

co-operation and co-ordination is the key to achieve desired results in due time. He further exhorted the gathering to be active agents of unity in spite of the constituency size or the “galho” of tribal groups who inhabit the constituency. The note further said that MVC Chairman, Khonyü Kuotsu lauded the tireless efforts of Zhaleo towards developing Medziphema into a satellite model township, while also apprising him of the need to set up a medical sub-centre in the village which has over 300 houses. Earlier, the program began with invocation of blessings by Megovotuo Kuotsu, Pastor, BCMV, while Dosau Kuotsu, Former Chairman, MTC, delivered the welcome address. Besides, number of speeches was delivered by elders and leaders. The program was followed by a mass felicitation feast where all distinguished guests and villagers partook with fervor, it added.

under the authoritarian regime of Chief Minister Rio where the system of election in its party is more of selection with dissenting voices muffled.” The NPCC also mentioned about the “jumbo sized party organization which is prominently visible by the presence of numerous vehicles on the road displaying the nameplate of NPF functionaries and consuming the resources meant for development of the state.” Therefore, the NPCC points that the Chief Minister has no moral authority to comment on the internal affairs of the Congress party in Nagaland when he runs the NPF party as his personal fiefdom with scant regards for inner party democracy. Stating that the NPF led DAN will always parrot the “overwhelming people’s mandate” with 52 members in the current legislative assembly, however, this has also become a predicament with the problem

of plenty and therefore it is envisaged that sooner or later, DAN-III will collapse on the weight of its own, stated the NPCC. The press note also claimed that the Congress led UPA returning to power at the Centre for the third consecutive time in 2014 “can never be halted with the main opposition party, the BJP unable to extricate itself from the divisive agenda it propagated to polarize the nation and catapult itself as the main opposition party in the early nineties”. The NPCC went on to state that the Congress party which is over 125 year old and called the grand old party in the country “has enough room to accommodate diverse views, agendas and aspirations for the betterment of the people and the state and therefore the party can never be written off easily as desired by Chief Minister Rio”.

The letter clarified that the Under Graduate (Annual) Examinations- 2013 started on April 4, 2013 due to general election to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, and completed on April 27, 2013 and not April 17 as alleged by the ANCSU. Born as the First World War came to a close and departing from public life as the world marks half-a-century of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, I have reached that part of the long walk when the opportunity is granted, as it should be to all men and women, to retire to some rest and tranquillity in the village of my birth. As I sit in Qunu and grow as ancient as its hills, I will continue to entertain the hope that there has emerged a cadre of leaders in my own country and region, on my continent and in the world, which will not allow that any should be denied their freedom as we were; that any should be turned into refugees as we were; that any should be condemned to go hungry as we were; that any should be stripped of their human dignity as we were. ... Were all these hopes to translate into a realisable dream and not a nightmare to torment the soul of the aged, then will I, indeed, have peace and tranquillity. Then would history and the billions throughout the world proclaim that it was right that we dreamt and that we toiled to give life to a workable dream. Address to the United Nations General Assembly, 21 September 1998 On building peace

Peace is not just the absence of conflict; peace is the creation of an environment where all can flourish, regardless of race, colour, creed, religion, gender, class, caste, or any other social markers of difference. Religion, ethnicity, language, social and cultural practices are elements which enrich human civilization, adding to the wealth of our diversity. Why should they be allowed to become a cause of division, and violence? We demean our common humanity by allowing that to happen. ... New Delhi, India, 31 January 2004

There is still too much discord, hatred, division, conflict and violence in our world here at the beginning of the 21st century. A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of. … It is so easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build. ... Soweto, South Africa, 12 July 2008 On fighting poverty

South Africans have shown a tremendous capacity to join hands when facing difficulty. The apartheid system eventually fell because of the unity of those who were denied their rights, and because all sectors of society recognised that they had more to gain from working together than from fighting each other. It is that same quality that has helped us, so quickly, to lay the foundations for a better life. When apartheid ended we faced the difficult task of reconstructing our shattered society and providing the most basic of services for our people. We had to build schools and hospitals, to provide housing and jobs, to boost our economy, to protect our people’s rights through our Constitution and our courts, to help South Africa deal with the division of its past and start the healing process, to deal with abuse and damage which engulfed most of our communities. Essentially our task was to create the conditions in which every South African has the opportunity to create a better life for themselves. But government cannot meet these challenges by itself. It requires of us all to pull together, into a partnership, in order to bring about the necessary changes. In order to achieve these goals, we also needed to transform government from a system serving minority interests to one that meets the needs of all South Africans. And all these things had to be done in a country where most people were denied experience of government or proper education and training. This is why we have placed aheavy emphasis on building capacity in government. … When we say that the best solutions to these challenges can only be found when we work with each other, it requires a commitment of each and every one of us. Today we should all ask ourselves: What have I done to improve the surroundings in which I live? Do I litter or do I protect my surroundings? Do I spread racial hatred or do I promote peace and reconciliation? Do I buy stolen goods or do I help reduce crime? Do I pay my dues or do I cheat on my taxes, service fees and licences? Do I expect everything to be delivered to me or do I work with my local councillors to create a better life for myself and my community? Bothaville, South Africa, 14 October 1998

As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest. We shall never forget how millions of people around the world joined us in solidarity to fight the injustice of our oppression while we were incarcerated. Those efforts paid off and we are able to stand here and join the millions around the world in support of freedom against poverty. Massive poverty and obscene inequality are such terrible scourges of our times — times in which the world boasts breathtaking advances in science, technology, industry and wealth accumulation. We live in a world where knowledge and information have made enormous strides, yet millions of children are not in school. We live in a world where the AIDS pandemic threatens the very fabric of our lives. Yet we spend more money on weapons than on ensuring treatment and support for the millions infected by HIV. It is a world of great promise and hope. It is also a world of despair, disease and hunger. Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom. The steps that are needed from the developed nations are clear. The first is ensuring trade justice. I have said before that trade justice is a truly meaningful way for the developed countries to show commitment to bringing about an end to global poverty. The second is an end to the debt crisis for the poor countries. The third is to deliver much more aid and make sure it is of the highest quality. ... INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

A high-wire walk with God T

Nik Wallenda

he two-inch-wide steel cable felt cold and wet beneath the elkskin-soled moccasins my mother had made me. I slid one foot forward, then the other. Below was the lip of Niagara Falls, where 600,000 gallons of water per second plunged 170 feet straight down to jagged rocks. Billowing white clouds of spray spewed hundreds of feet into the air. The wind machines and fire hoses I’d practiced with were nothing compared with the turbulence that buffeted me and the swirling mist that made it hard to even see the high wire swaying under my feet. I grasped the 40-pound balancing pole. It lowered my center of gravity and helped steady me on the 1,500-footlong wire I was walking, crossing from New York to Canada. I still had a long way to go. “Looking good, Nik.” My dad’s voice came through my earpiece, quiet and soothing against the roar of the falls below. “Nice calm steps.” My heart pounded, not from fear but from excitement. Out there in the floodlit darkness were thousands of people watching me attempt this feat, hundreds of news cameras recording my every step. Other people had crossed the Niagara Gorge back in the 1800s but never directly over Horseshoe Falls. I had dreamed of doing this walk since I was 6 years old, and now, 27 years later, it was finally happening. “Thank you, Lord,” I said out loud, over and over. You might be wondering how someone gets a dream like this -- I know it seems crazy to a lot of people. I really think that my dream chose me. Walking the high wire is in my blood. I’m part of the seventh generation of a circus family that began performing in Eastern Europe in the 1780s. My mom walked the line while pregnant with me. I was walking a twofoot-high practice wire in my parents’ backyard by the age of 2. One night a program about my family came on TV. Grainy, silent news footage showed a balding man walking a wire between two tall buildings in Puerto Rico. Suddenly, the wire started to shake, and the man’s pole bobbed up and down like a seesaw. My mom tried to coax me away from the television but I was mesmerized. The man lowered himself, then grabbed at the wire and hung on for a moment before falling to his death. “Who was that?” I asked my parents. They exchanged a long look before my dad answered. “That was your great-grandfather, Karl Wallenda. Your mother’s grandfather. He made the family name what it is.” I was too young to fully understand then what he meant, but I knew Karl was important. I peppered my parents with lots more questions about him and the rest of our family while we traveled the country, as we did much of each year, performing in circuses and fairs. My parents walked the wire, while my older sister and I had supporting roles in their act. It might be surprising, but I never really worried about my parents doing what they did for a living. Before every show we prayed together. “Dear Father, protect us, and may our talents be used for your glory,” my dad would say. We often drove in a truck for 12 or more hours a day, singing along to praise and worship music, before settling in at a campground where my sister and I caught up on our lessons with Mom. On one of these trips, we visited Niagara Falls. “I want to walk across the waterfall when I grow up,” I announced to my parents. My dad chuckled. “No one has even been allowed to try that for almost a hundred years.” Shaking her head, my mom added, “There are lots of other things you can do in life besides walking the wire, Nikolas. Work hard and you can do anything.” But as I grew, I begged my parents to let me perform on the wire with them. They wanted me to prove I was ready; they would throw things at me and shake the wire in our backyard to distract me as I walked, testing my focus. My friends from the youth group at our church would come over and we’d play around on the wire. Everyone knew about my family legacy, the legacy Karl had created. You see, the Wallendas weren’t always wire-walkers. Karl was born into the third generation of circus Wallendas and when he was 17, he answered a newspaper ad seeking a hand balancer who wasn’t afraid of heights. Karl learned how to walk and do handstands on the wire. He started his own troupe, brought it to America and conceived its amazing signature act, the seven-person chair pyramid. For years, my family performed the act flawlessly before thousands of people. But during a performance in Detroit in 1962, the front man in the pyramid lost his footing, causing a chain reaction that sent three men hurtling 40 feet to the ground. Two of them died and the third -Karl’s own son -- was paralyzed. Yet Karl went on to perform daring solo sky walks over gorges and between high-rises, building up the Wallenda name, until 1978, when he plunged to his death in that sudden, silent fall in Puerto Rico at age 73. By the time I was born, the following year, the large Wallenda clan had broken up into several different groups. As I grew older, the hardships of our daily lives began to wear on me. Sometimes our truck would break down and my mom and dad didn’t know how they’d find the money to get us to the next show. They struggled to stretch their meager pay to cover food and clothes. My parents encouraged me to get out of the family business, especially after I turned 13, when they had to declare bankruptcy. Around the same time, though, they finally relented and let me walk the wire professionally. Up on the line, it was so natural, so easy, but down in the real world, I lay awake at night listening to my parents’ tense whispers about money and convinced myself it was best to let go of my dream of following in Karl’s footsteps. At 15, I got myself a nice, normal job as a busboy at First Watch, a breakfast-and-lunch restaurant in Sarasota. I worked my way up the ranks until I ran the kitchen. I got accepted to Southeastern University, a Bible college in Lakeland, Fla., and planned on studying to become a pediatrician. I’d started dating Erendira, a beautiful girl I’d known for years who was also from a circus family. I was happy, so happy. And yet the wire still beckoned, and Erendira understood its lure. Then our family was invited to resurrect the seven-person pyramid by the same Detroit circus where two Wallendas had lost their lives 36 years earlier. I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to help close that tragic chapter of our family legacy. And then maybe, just maybe, I would be able to move on. We trained for months before successfully reenacting the pyramid for an audience teeming with reporters. As I came down from the wire afterward, the dream I had tried so hard to abandon was ignited again within me -- more like a calling than a dream. That night, I watched news reports about our accomplishment, and inevitably there was a clip of Karl’s fateful fall. He was a man of such vision, such passion, following his calling no matter what. Was it that same passion that drove me? Be sensible, I told myself. Become a doctor and have a good life like Mom and Dad want for you, like Erendira deserves. Yet I knew my family had a special gift, a talent they had stayed true to for years. I didn’t know why God had given us this gift, but I knew in my heart that the only way to honor it was to use it. Even if it was difficult, even if it was dangerous. Danger was real, but fear was a choice. I would choose faith instead -- after all, that was a part of my family legacy too. Everything we did was for the glory of God. My parents fought my decision. “We want you to study and move on, Nikolas,” my mother said. Her anxiety was clearly stamped on the features that were so composed when she walked the wire. Dad raised his head from his hands. “I should never have allowed you to be part of the pyramid. We wanted better for you, Nik.” And yet now, high above Niagara, it was my father’s voice guiding me at every step. My hands were going numb around the balance pole, my eyes straining to keep their focus through the stinging mist. Dad urged me forward. I thought of how far I had come since that leap of faith almost 15 years earlier. I had broken world records; my mom and I had completed the same walk that had taken Karl’s life, as a tribute; I had persevered through two years of red tape just to get permission to attempt this walk. Not everything had gone as I’d hoped -- I’d had to wear a tether for the first time in my career to keep my television sponsor. But now I was so close

aredevil aerialist Nik Wallenda walked the full 1,400 feet across a gorge near the Grand Canyon late Sunday — and he did so in a continuous conversation with Jesus. Mr. Wallenda wore a microphone during his 22-minute, 53-second high-wire walk – elevated 1,500 feet above the gorge – which was telecast live on the Discovery Channel and streamed online in real time. The technology allowed viewers to hear Wallenda’s ongoing professing of Jesus, and interchange with Terry Troffer, his father. Wallenda praised God, and offered thanks when he felt winds strengthening about midway through his walk. “Definitely whipping that cable.... Golly, wind. Go away, in the name of Jesus.... Thank you Lord.

Thank you for calming that cable, Lord.... Oh, yeah. That's my savior. That's Jesus,” he was heard saying. Wallenda’s faith is ingrained in his career on the high wire. In his memoir, “Balance: A Story of Faith, Family, and Life on the Line,” released this week, Wallenda writes: “God’s grace is the balancing pole that keeps me from falling into self-obsession and self-deception. Whatever I have achieved — and will ever achieve — is the result of my relationship with Him.” His family legacy in the circus drove him to his line of work, however he says he was most influenced by his great-grandfather Karl

to completing the walk, I could hear the cheers of the audience on the Canadian side rising to greet me. I dropped to one knee on the wire and blew a kiss heavenward to Karl before rising and jogging the last few steps to the end of the line, where I hugged Erendira and our three children close. Those cheers were wonderful, but you know what was even better? All the people who talked and wrote to me afterward, telling me that watching my walk had inspired them to take the first step in pursuing their dreams or facing their fears.

Wallenda, who died in a fall from a tightrope in Puerto Rico in 1978. In an essay posted this year to Guideposts, an online Christian news site, he writes that he wants to honor his family’s “gift,” which he believes was given to them by God. “I didn’t know why God had given us this gift, but I knew in my heart that the only way to honor it was to use it. Even if it was difficult, even if it was dangerous. Danger was real, but fear was a choice. I would choose faith instead – after all, that was a part of my family legacy too. Everything we did was for the glory of God,” he writes. Sports figures commonly reflect

their faith on their respective field of play, whether through praying before, during, or after a victory. Wallenda told the Christian Post in early June that he often talks to God when suspended on a cable. “I find that peaceful and relaxing, and He’s the only one up there listening to me,” he said. Before the event Sunday, Wallenda and his family prayed with Christian televangelist and author Joel Osteen. Last year Wallenda crossed Niagara Falls, traversing a distance of 1,800 feet suspended at a height of 220 feet. After Sunday’s walk, he told reporters that God inspired him, like many around the world, “that again the impossible is not so impossible if you set your mind to it and reach for your goals.” “Praise God here I am in one piece,” he said.

My next plan is to walk across the Grand Canyon in June, 1,500 feet above the river and the magnificent ancient rock. And this time there will be no tether or net, in keeping with the way the Wallendas have performed for decades. Before I set out, I will join with my family in prayer, just as I do before every walk I take on the wire. We will thank God for a gift we may not understand but which we know we must honor. I train, I focus and I have faith in the path I feel called to follow. I know God is with me every step of the way.

‘Food Bill just a Rahul Gandhi favours 50% vote catching tool quota for women in AICC for Congress’

NEW DELHI, JUNE 29 (PTI): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday vowed to ensure 50 per cent representation to women in AICC and other party wings as he held his first formal interaction with newly-appointed party office bearers, the team set up by him for the 2014 Lok Sabha poll. “Mr. Gandhi talked about how to ensure 50 per cent representation to women in AICC...It’s not about reservation. It’s about their representation. “When he observed that their (women) presence is not in the proportion it should be, he said the presence of women is less but it will definitely be 50 per cent in the coming two-three years,” party spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das told reporters after the meeting. Ms. Ambika Soni is the only women among the 12 AICC general secretaries, while of the 44 secretaries only five are women. Mr. Gandhi also made it categorically clear to the office bearers, mainly general secretaries and secretaries, that those who have been given responsibility will also be held accountable. As the reshuffled AICC now wears a younger look with 52 being the average age of office bearers, he also chose

Dress code for Madras Christian College leaves students fuming

CHENNAI, JUNE 29 (TNN): It’s known for being one of the most liberal colleges in the state, which is why the decision of the Madras Christian College management to impose a dress code — contrary to the studied indifference of so many decades — has kicked up a storm. Students have been told to wear the college identity card with a tag around their necks, like software professionals or engineering students do. Some departments have asked male students to keep hair short, and all male students have been told to wear only formal clothes or only T-shirts with collars. “The idea of a dress code is appalling. And to wear the student ID around my neck is humiliating. Why should we conform to the rules of the rest of the world. That has never been our identity,” said a second year student. There are subtle hints to women to wear “appropriate clothing”, which means no sleeveless dresses or short tops. Demure salwars are preferred. It’s hard to picture an MCC devoid of men with rocker-style long hair and ripped jeans, or women in tees and skirts. Many current and former students see

the new regulations as the loss of freedom for students to make their choices and a compromise of college traditions. Students have gone online to protest against these changes by starting pages like ‘Condemn the new rules of Madras Christian College’ on popular social networking site Facebook. The page has registered 500 likes in a day and several responses from current and former students. R Sridhar, dean of student affairs, said people tend to exaggerate things online. “Many of the rules are the same as in earlier years. We respect the traditions of the college and are keen on retaining the liberal atmosphere,” he said. He said that students have been asked to wear their ID cards for security reasons. “The college has a 365-acre campus, and several gates. There is a strong possibility of outsiders entering the campus and disturbing the students. Last year, a professor was almost beaten up and minor thefts have been reported. We have identified a new security agency that will take over soon. We understand that it is a little annoying for the students, but it is a safety measure that should be taken,” he said.

GONDIA, JUNE 29 (PTI): The UPA government’s proposed Food Safety Bill is nothing more than a vote catching tool for Congress, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said and expressed concern over wastage of food grains in the country. Because of negligence on the part of the Government, food grains worth Rs 58,000 crore go waste in the country every year. There is a lack of planning and adequate storage facility for food grains, he said. “It’s very unfortunate that at on one hand kids are dying of malnutrition in tribal areas of Maharashtra and on the other paddy stocks worth crores are lying in the open. Who will take the responsibility for this?” he asked. The former Lok Sabha MP from Mumbai was speaking to reporters yesterday after visiting some paddy procurement centres, run by Tribal Development Corporation (TDC), near here in Eastern Maharashtra. “The proposed Food Safety Bill of Congress is their Vote Safety Bill in real sense. A government unable to prevent loss of foodgrains worth crores every year is talking of food safety for the poor. They should first make efforts to create adequate storage space for food grains,” Somaiya said. The landmark legislation aims at giving legal right over a uniform quantity of 5kg food grains at a fixed price of Rs 1-3 per kg via ration shops to 67 per cent of the population. Main Opposition BJP has said it supported the Food Bill in principle. The paddy lying in open gets completely destroyed and it is not fit for even consumption by animals. The Congress- NCP Government (in the State) is influenced by liquor lobby and that’s why they are not serious about taking steps for preventing the food grains from rotting,” Somaiya alleged. “I have visited seven states and more than 55 procurement centres in the states like Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Odisha besides Maharashtra. Among these, Maharashtra has the worst storage facilities.” On the growing Naxal menace, the BJP leader said it is a national problem and there should be no politics over it. All parties should come together to formulate a comprehensive and strong anti-Naxal policy, he said. Blasting Maharashtra’s Congress-led coalition Government, Somaiya said it is “neck deep” in corruption and this has halted growth of the state.

IDUkkI, JUNE 29 (IANS): A court here has dismissed a review petition filed by the victim in the Suryanelli sex case seeking the inclusion of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien as an accused in the case. The Thodupuzha sessions court said there was nothing new in the petition and all aspects had been looked into earlier. The woman approached the court after her petition was not admitted in a lower court in Idukki district in March. The sex scandal took place at Suryanelli in Idukki

district in January 1996, when the then 16-year-old was allegedly threatened, abducted and abused by a bus conductor and was later confined and sexually assaulted for 45 days by 42 men. The victim had demanded further investigation into the case in the light of new disclosures, after Dharmarajan, the lone accused in the case, who was absconding after securing bail, was caught by Kerala Police a few months back from Karnataka. Dharmarajan, ahead of his arrest told a TV channel, about the alleged involvement of Kurien in the case. He, however, testified in the court last month that his earlier remarks were made under the influence of alcohol and gave a clean chit to Kurien. Kurien’s name never appeared in the list of accused and in the late 1990s after a special court found more than 42 people guilty. The victim then filed a private complaint against Kurien in a court in Idukki district alleging that he had exploited her at a guest house. Kurien got a discharge over the complaint from the Supreme Court. The case was back in the spotlight after the apex court ordered a retrial in the case Jan 31 this year, while setting aside the acquittal in 2005 by the Kerala High Court of all but one of the 35 accused convicted by a special court. All the accused have since taken bail.

of girl’s father, city police said on Saturday. As per the complaint, the incident happened late Thursday night in a bylane near Rajendranagar Railway terminal. The eight-year-old Uzma Aara had alighted from a train from Darbhanga with her parents at the Terminal. She was walking with her family

elders in the by-lane when one local goon Bobby Khan and his aides, having alighted from the same train, grabbed her and allegedly chopped off her right hand, the FIR said. According to the girl’s father Eanual Ansari, a month back Bobby Khan had kidnapped his fouryear-old daughter in

which Uzma Aara was a witness. An FIR is registered in this connection with Laheriasarai police station of Darbhanga district. City Superintendent of Police Jay Kant said police were investigating the case. The girl is being attended in Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

Testing cosmetics on animals banned

CHENNAI, JUNE 29 (TNN): It may be just the first step, but it certainly has brought smiles to the faces of animal right activists. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Friday approved the removal of animal tests from the country’s cosmetics standard. India becomes the first country in southeast Asia to end the practice, thanks to the efforts of Humane Society International that joined hands with Blue Cross and Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO) to conduct a campaign which had members from various quarters lending their voice against animal testing. “It is definitely a victory, but the fight won’t stop until animal testing is prohibited in every sector,” said Arpan Sharma of FIAPO. “When there are several cruelty-free methods of testing in the market nowadays there is no justi-

fication for animal testing. This is a great first step but we need to go further and make sure the government bans cosmetics products that are tested on animals abroad and then imported and sold here,” he said. Animal Welfare Board of India vice-chairman S Chinni Krishna said the ban would end the pain of countless animals. “Animal testing was done by companies mainly to escape law suits. Testing was done mainly on rats, guinea pigs and rabbits and one cannot describe the trauma and abuse these animals undergo in the labs. They are force-fed drugs to check for side effects until they choke and die,” said Krishna who is also a member of the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA). Recalling how she rescued her pet beagle from Chinthana Gopinath, an animal rights ac- ing was banned in the pharmaceutical seca testing lab in Bangalore, tivist, said “it would be great if animal test- tor as well.”

Critics often attribute the violence in Xinjiang to what they say is Beijing’s oppressive and discriminatory ethnicity policies. Many Uighurs complain that authorities impose tight restrictions on their religious and cultural life. The Chinese government says that it has invested billions of dollars in modernizing the oil- and gas-rich region and that it treats all ethnic groups equally. Calls to local government agencies were either unanswered or were

responded to by people who said they were unauthorized to speak to reporters. State-run media reported that the incident Wednesday started when knife-wielding assailants targeted police stations, a government building and a construction site — all symbols of Han authority in the region. Photos released in state media show scorched police cars and government buildings and victims lying on the ground, presumably dead.

(AP) : A new poll shows Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff’s popularity has plummeted since the outbreak of nationwide protests several weeks ago. The Datafolha survey published Saturday finds 30 percent of respondents giving positive marks to Rousseff ’s government, down from 57 percent registered in its previous poll before the demonstrations began. Datafolha says it’s the biggest drop in a president’s approval rating since a 1990 fall for then-Pres-

Mello, who was forced from office because of a corruption scandal. The recent protests first targeted transportation fare hikes and quickly expanded to a variety of causes including government corruption, high taxes, poor public services and billions of dollars spent for next year’s World Cup soccer tournament. Datafolha surveyed 4,717 people on June 27 and 28. Its poll has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

More than 50 journalists hurt in Brazil protests

SAO PAULO, JUNE 29 (AP): The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism says that more than 50 journalists have been injured, harassed or arrested during the protest demonstrations that have swept Latin America’s biggest country since June 17. The wave of protests began as opposition to transportation fare hikes, then expanded to a variety of causes including government corruption, high taxes, poor public services and high World Cup spending. The association says in an emailed statement that 34 journalists were the victims of “aggression, hostility or threats by police officers,” Six reporters were arrested, some for a few minutes and others for up to three days. It says 12 were hurt by protesters.

Offices of Egypt’s ruling party set ablaze

CAIRO, JUNE 29 (AGENCIES): Two offices of Egypt’s ruling Freedom and Justice Party were set on fire in the northern port city of Alexandria and in Daqahliya governorate, a media report said. In Alexandria, the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated party’s central offices in Sidi Gaber district were torched, while in Daqahliya, the party office in Aga city was set ablaze Friday, the Al-Ahram daily reported.

Islamist groups staged a rally in support of President Mohamed Morsi in Cairo, even as thousands of Morsi’s opponents marched towards the city’s central Tahrir Square, chanting against Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood and urging him to step down. Clashes have taken place in several governorates - including Daqahliya, Sharqiya and Zagazig - which left three dead and scores injured in the

past week. Amnesty International has urged Egypt’s authorities to refrain from unnecessary or excessive force against protesters, and to protect bystanders from violence and uphold the right to peaceful assembly. Some 80 people have been killed during protests, mainly as a result of unnecessary and excessive force by security forces since Morsi took office a year ago.

Obama tells leaders to follow Mandela’s example

JOhANNESBURG, JUNE 29 (AP): President Barack Obama encouraged leaders in Africa and around the world Saturday to follow former South African President Nelson Mandela’s example of country before self, as the U.S. president prepared to pay personal respects to relatives who have been gathered around the critically ill antiapartheid icon. “We as leaders occupy these spaces temporarily and we don’t get so deluded that we think the fate of our

country doesn’t depend on how long we stay in office,” Obama said. Obama spoke at a news conference with South African President Jacob Zuma in the midst of a weeklong tour of the continent that also included stops in Senegal and Tanzania. But many other African nations are embroiled in religious, sectarian and other conflicts. Obama decided to avoid

stopping in his father’s home nation of Kenya because of international disputes there. The International Criminal Court is prosecuting Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta for crimes against humanity, including murder, deportation, rape, persecution and inhumane acts allegedly committed by his supporters in the violent aftermath of Kenya’s 2007 elections.

PERU, JUNE 29 (AGENCIES): Gold and silver riches from more than a millennium ago have been found in Peru, within what appears to be the first unlooted tomb of South America’s Wari civilization. The dramatic find was unveiled at a news conference at the El Castillo de Huarmey archaeological site, 185 miles (300 kilometers) north of Lima. It’s also described in a report from National Geographic, which supported the months-long excavation. The tomb, which dates back to an era between the year 700 and 1000, could open up an unprecedented window on the mysterious Wari, a culture that predated the Incas. “We are talking about the first unearthed royal imperial tomb,” Milosz Giersz, an archaeologist at the University of Warsaw in Poland, told National Geographic.

The mummies of three Wari queens were discovered — along with the remains of 60 other individuals, some of whom may have been human sacrifices. Giersz and Peruvian archaeologist Roberto Pimentel Nita are co-directors of the project, which had to be conducted in secret to keep looters at bay. Grave robbers have been active at the 110-acre site for decades, but the Wari mausoleum was hidden so deep underground that it was apparently preserved untouched. Three years ago, the archaeologists studied aerial photography of the region and spotted traces of a subterranean structure, sitting on a ridge between two large adobebrick pyramids, National Geographic reported. Last September, Giersz and his team dug through a pile of rubble and uncovered an

ancient ceremonial room with a stone throne and a large, carved wooden mace that apparently served as a tomb marker. Beneath piles of loose stone, they found rows of human remains — most of them women, wrapped in textiles and buried in a seated position. “The women were buried with finely engraved earpieces made of precious metals that once were believed to be used only by men,” Reuters quoted archaeologist Patrycja Przadk as saying at Thursday’s news conference. Bioarchaeologist Wieslaw Wieckowski told Reuters that six of the skeletons were laid out unwrapped in the main chamber, and appear to have been human sacrifices for the mummified elite. “They were people thrown into the grave before the grave was sealed,” he said. “They were lying on their bellies, in an

“The timing was not right for me as the president of the United States to be visiting Kenya when those issues are still being worked on, and hopefully at some point resolved,” Obama said. He noted he’s visited Kenya several times previously and expects he will as well in the future. Obama and Zuma appeared at the Union Buildings that house govern-

ment offices and the site of Mandela’s 1994 inauguration as the country’s first black president after 27 years behind bars for his activism. extended position, and their limbs went in different directions.” In three side chambers, the archaeologists found the three queens and their treasures. More than 1,000 artifacts were recovered, including gold and silver jewelry, silver bowls, bronze ritual axes, an alabaster drinking cup, knives — and even weaving tools made of gold. that he will improve. Obama and his wife visited with some of Mandela’s relatives Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, part of the former president’s foundation. The White House didn’t say which relatives were meeting with Obama. In accordance with the family’s wishes, Obama doesn’t plan to visit with Mandela. Obama revered Man-

dela as “one of the greatest people in history,” referred to him by his clan name as he praised South Africa’s historic integration from white racist rule as a shining beacon for the world. “The struggle here against apartheid for freedom, Madiba’s moral courage, this country’s historic transition to a free and democratic nation has been a personal inspiration to me,

it has been an inspiration to the world,” Obama said. “The outpouring of love that we’ve seen in recent days shows that the triumph of Nelson Mandela and this nation speaks to something very deep in the human spirit, the yearning for justice and dignity that transcends boundaries of race and class and faith and country,” Obama said. “That’s what Nelson Mandela represents, that’s what South African at its best represents to the world, and that’s what brings me back here.”

Abe chided for querying war apology

TOKYO, JUNE 29 (AP): A retired Japanese politician whose name is on a landmark 1993 apology over Japan’s use of wartime sex slaves says Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s attempts to downplay Japan’s actions before and during World War II have hurt the country’s global image and could undermine its pacifist pledge. Yohei Kono played a major role in the early 1990s helping Japan confront its wartime past and establish warmer ties with its Asian neighbors during years leading up to the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. He said in a rare interview with The Associated Press this week that Abe’s suggestion that he wanted to revise two apologies — including a 1995 statement expressing regret for Japan’s wartime aggression and commitment to peace— risks setting back by decades relations with China and South Korea. If the apologies are changed, “Japan will be isolated from the international community. That much is clear,” the 76-year-old Kono said. “I’m afraid he (Abe) is underestimating a possible impact of his comments” on Japan’s diplomacy. Abe has alarmed China and South Korea by suggesting that he would like to revise Japan’s pacifist constitution so that Japan’s military can operate with more freedom. Kono, too, is concerned about

this push and says Abe’s government needs to fully accept that Japan is geopolitically part of Asia, and has no choice but to deepen ties with China and South Korea. “You say it’s hard to get along with them, or there is complicated history. Even so, we must overcome the difficulty and be friends. It’s crucial to keep that in mind and make efforts, and prioritize that before anything,” said Kono, who retired four years ago after 42 years at the top of Japan’s political world. As Chief Cabinet Secretary in the early 1990s, Kono was a relatively liberal-leaning politician within the generally conservative Liberal Democratic Party. He helped craft — and read to the public on Aug. 4, 1993 — what has come to be called the “Kono Statement” apologizing for “immeasurable pain and incurable physical and psychological wounds” inflicted on thousands of “comfort women,” mostly Korean but also from China, the Philippines, Indonesia and the Netherlands. The statement — the government’s most thorough apology on the matter — won praise in Asia and elsewhere outside Japan, but faced some criticism at home from conservatives, including members of Kono’s former party, which has become increasingly right-wing.

Riders start on Corsica for 100th Tour de France

P O RT O V E C C H I O, JUNE 29 (AP): Riders set out Saturday on stage one of the 100th Tour de France with British sprinter Mark Cavendish among the favorites to take the first yellow jersey and race favorite Chris Froome overcoming an early technical problem. Starting from the harbor town of Porto Vecchio, the flat 132-mile stage first took riders inland before snaking along the Corsican coast to finish in Bastia. The race has usually started with a short prologue stage where riders raced against the clock. But in a break with tradition, this year's opener favors sprinters like Cavendish and rival Peter Sagan of Slovakia. With defending champion Bradley Wiggins not competing, Froome of Britain and Spaniard Alberto Contador start as the main favorites for the three-week, 2,115-mile race. Froome, the most highly regarded climber in the Tour, stopped to get a new rear wheel after a mechanical incident about five kilometers (3 miles) into the race. He then stopped for a second time to get a new bike shortly after before his Sky teammates helped him rejoin the main pack. It is the first Tour since disgraced former cyclist Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven straight Tour titles from 1999 to 2005 for doping. Armstrong still managed to hog the headlines on the eve of the race, though, infuriating riders both past and present by talking at length in a newspaper interview about doping in the sport and sparking a media

Allen returning to Heat next season MIAMI, JUNE 29 (AP): Ray Allen is returning to the Miami Heat next season. Allen exercised his $3.2 million player option Friday, barely a week after the Heat finished off the San Antonio Spurs to win the NBA Finals in seven games. Allen made one of the biggest shots in Heat history, a 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left in Game 6 of the finals to tie the game and force an overtime where Miami ultimately prevailed. Allen turns 38 next month, yet still played in 102 games during the regular season and playoffs for Miami. That was the most appearances by any player in the league this past season. Teammates, coaches and the Heat front office all made it clear to Allen that he was wanted back for next season. Allen left Miami following the end-ofseason team meeting on Tuesday without giving the organization an answer, though didn't keep people waiting much longer. He could have elected to become a free agent and wound up getting more years and more money in a new deal, and decided to stay with the Heat anyway. Allen averaged 10.9 points in the regular season, and 10.2 points in the playoffs. With the team exercising its

option on starting point guard Mario Chalmers, and with Rashard Lewis and James Jones exercising their rights to stay for next season, the next major course of business for the Heat will be trying to woo Chris Andersen to stay when he becomes a free agent next week. Teammates believe Andersen, who has remained in Miami since the championship and is working out, wants to return to the Heat next season. The Heat will also have a large luxury-tax bill next season, though team president Pat Riley said earlier this week that he has not been given a mandate to pare a player like Mike Miller or Joel Anthony to relieve some of that burden. Riley's hope is to bring the roster back as intact as possible.

RIO DE JANEIRO, JUNE 29 (AP): FIFA President Sepp Blatter responded Friday to criticism of the cost of staging the World Cup in Brazil by pledging to give at least $100 million from profits back to the country. World football's governing body gave South Africa $100 million to invest in development projects after the 2010 World Cup, but had not previously said it would establish a similar "social fund" after the 2014 tournament to Brazil. The Confederations Cup, which serves as a World Cup warm-up event, has been marred by protesters denouncing billions of dollars spent to host the World Cup — money some say should be going toward improving public services. "We have left a legacy (in South Africa), a special fund of $100 million, this fund is controlled by the Football (Association) of (South) Africa, the government of South Africa and FIFA," Blatter said in Rio de Janeiro. "I am sure an amount like that, or even higher, will be possible to have here ... the aim from FIFA is not to take profit out of the country, but to put into the country." Blatter said he can "understand this social unrest" that has rocked Brazil while the tournament has been taking place. The demonstrations took off earlier this month over a 10-cent hike in bus and subway fare in Sao Paulo and morphed into a mass, nationwide movement voicing public dissatisfaction with a range of issues such as government corruption, poor education, health care and spending on the World Cup. The government is projecting that $13.3 billion will be spent on stadiums, airport renovations and other projects for the World Cup, with an estimated $3.5 billion on the 12 venues. As violence escalated in the streets near to Confederations Cup matches, with protesters clashing with police, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said her government would start to invest in projects the public had been demanding. "They have promised to change — this is not our problem, this is a political problem, but something will be

changed," Blatter said. "Then the World Cup will have this platform when finally this can be delivered. It's all a question of patience and a question of trust and confidence." Blatter also expressed "trust and confidence" in how the authorities coped with "some uncomfortable situations we have witnessed" during the Confederations Cup, declining to comment on the police firing tear gas and rubber bullets at some protesters. Blatter, though, expects football to help unite the nation, and Brazil will lift the Confederations Cup on Sunday if it can beat reigning world and European champions Spain. "Hope is one of the elements of football ... we play football nowadays in all perturbed countries in all the world," Blatter said. "And not only in the perturbed countries where there are many (security) situations, like in Syria or in Afghanistan where we play football, but also (where) there is some social unrest. "Look at European countries, there is social unrest — there are demonstrations in Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece." The extent of the public anger was clear to Blatter at the opening match of the Confederations Cup between Brazil and Japan, with fans loudly jeered him and Rousseff. Blatter said he did not know if the president would attend Sunday's final at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, and the Brazilian government told The Associated Press: "We do not have that information."

sOUTHAMPTON, JUNE 29 (AP): Inbee Park's quest for a third straight major championship in 2013 remains right on track after she shot a 4-under 68 on Friday to lead the U.S. Women's Open by two strokes. After the horn sounded to suspend play for the day in foggy conditions, Park played out the 18th hole and sank a birdie putt from 12 feet to move to 9-under 135, leading fellow South Korean I.K. Kim. Of the players yet to finish the round, the closest, England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff, was five strokes back with three holes to go. Ha-Neul Kim, the first-round leader, had a 77 to fall to 1 under. Of the 114 players who finished, only nine were under par for the round. "With the wind and fog, it really made me think that's what the U.S. Open is all about," said Park, a five-time winner this year coming off consecutive victories. Of the other players to complete the round, Lizette Salas was third at 4 under after a 72. Fellow Americans Angela Stanford and Jessica Korda were another stroke back. Stanford had a 68, and Korda shot 71. I.K. Kim shot a 69 in the morning session. "Anything under par I thought was going to be a great score," she said. Kim seems to thrive under the demands of this tournament, finishing in third or fourth place three straight years from 2008 to '10. But the closest she came to a major title came last year at the Kraft Nabisco — one foot away, to be exact. Needing just a short putt to clinch the championship, Kim watched the ball lip out on the

18th hole. She went on to lose in a playoff. "Everybody has ups and downs," Kim said. "Definitely finishing top five in the U.S. Open is not a bad place. But there's times that I was disappointed. I just have a faith — if you do your best, everything is going to be OK." Park's putting was not quite as impeccable as usual, but she made one of her toughest birdie tries of the day on No. 13, a 20-footer from the fringe, to tie Kim at 7 under. On the par-5 15th, she sent her third shot to the back of the green, where it bounced off the fringe and rolled down to within a foot of the hole. Park tapped in for birdie and the outright lead. "Everything that was closer was not going in, then everything that was further away from the hole was going in today," she said. "It was weird." Her playing partner, secondranked Stacy Lewis, had a rough day with a 76 that left her at 3 over. Among the players still on the course were Michelle Wie, who was at 3 over for the round through 17 holes after an 80 on Thursday, and 16-year-old amateur Lydia Ko, at 3 over for the tournament through 16. The round will resume at 7 a.m. Saturday, with the third round beginning around 10:30 a.m. Players will start in groups of three from the first and 10th tees. Salas was frustrated that she barely missed several birdie putts, but she knows her 72 was a good score in the swirling wind Friday. "You just can't be too greedy out here," she said. "Just hitting fairways, hitting greens, that was my goal. Eventually the putts will drop."

frenzy that organizers could have done without as they desperately try to turn the page on doping and restore credibility and trust. In answering questions from Le Monde, a newspaper he scorned when he was still competing, Armstrong said it was impossible to win the Tour during his era without doping, echoing what he already told U.S. television talk show host

Oprah Winfrey in January when he finally confessed to years of drug cheating after denying it for so long. Before the stage started, French Sports Minister Valerie Fourneyron met with a delegation of riders unhappy about pre-race media reports that they thought focused too heavily on doping stories. Earlier this week, French media reported that a Senate investigation into the effec-

tiveness of doping controls pieced together evidence that a urine sample provided by long-beloved French rider Laurent Jalabert contained EPO, cycling's designer drug, at the Tour of 1998. Meanwhile, two-time champion Contador returns to the race following a doping ban that saw him stripped of his 2010 title. He has always denied doping. It is the first time since

1966 that the first stage has been tailor-made for sprinters, with the prologue introduced to the race in '67. With Wiggins pulling out about a month before the race because of a knee injury, Froome is the odds-on favorite to become the second Briton to win the showcase race. The 28-year-old has had a great run-up to the Tour, winning four of five races he started.

Bayern, Ribery agree Oliveira puts Mahindra on contract extension Racing on Moto3 pole BERlIN, JUNE 29 (IANs): Frenchman Franck Ribery put pen to paper on a new contract with Bayern Munich until 2017, the German football giant announced. The German treble winner and midfielder Ribery closed the deal this Friday between training sessions. The 30-year-old French international already announced after the end of the last Bundesliga campaign that he planned to stay with the Bavarians. "I am very delighted. I have always said that I feel at home in Bayern. I have a good feeling for my family and me, and I hope it continues like last year," Ribery told the club's official homepage. The Frenchmen joined the Bavarians in 2007 from Marseille to score 53 goals in 156 appearances. Since his arrival at Bayern, Ribery became quickly a key player of the team owing to his excellent dribble skills and his ball control.

AssEN, JUNE 28 (IANs): Portuguese teenager Miguel Oliveira claimed the first pole position for the all new Mahindra Racing in the four-stroke Moto3 Championships here Friday. In windy and cloudy conditions, Oliveira put in a fast lap early on to put his name at the top of the charts in case the track should become wet. It stayed dry, and with ten minutes remaining, the usual stars moved forward, pushing the Mahindra rider to fifth position. However, it was not enough for Oliveira. Knowing his bike's potential was higher, he went out again for a blazing last run that put him back on top. Later in the session, another rider equalled his time but nobody could beat it. Oliveira takes the prime starting position for the first time in his career. His previous best

was a second position at Le Mans earlier this year. Team-mate Efren Vazquez qualified 17th. The Spaniard is still nursing painful collarbone injuries that were aggravated by a small spill in the morning free practice. The first Moto3 pole underlines the strong debut of the Mahindra MGP3O, designed and built within six months, and tracktested for the first time less than six months ago. The 250cc fourstroke grand prix racer has proved both competitive and reliable from first shake-down tests, and recent performance upgrades have further strengthened its performance in the hotly contested Moto3 class. Mahindra claimed a pole position during the two-stroke years, when Danny Webb put the 125cc machine in first position in wet qualifying at Valencia in 2011.

Brazilians say they don't fear Spain

RIO DE JANEIRO, JUNE 29 (AP): Brazilians aren't hiding how much they admire Spain's national team, how good the World Champions are and how difficult it is to play against them. But make no mistake, they say, that doesn't mean they'll fear Spain when the teams meet in the Confederations Cup final on Sunday at the Maracana. In a match everyone has been hoping to see, the hosts will be trying to win their third-straight title in the World Cup warm-up competition, and fourth overall, while Spain will be looking for its fourth major trophy in five years. Nearly every Brazilian player who has talked about Spain has praised the world and European champion, acknowledging that it's the best team in the world today. But they guarantee Brazil will be ready to make the home fans proud. "We just have to play football, we can't be afraid," Brazil striker Neymar said Friday. "We know Spain is the best team in the world and that they have the best players in the world. We respect them and I admire them a lot, but when the match starts we have full confidence that we can play well to beat them and win the title for our fans." Brazil and Spain haven't played since a 1999 scoreless draw in a friendly. "It's tough to wait for a match like this," Neymar said. "I

wish we could be playing it tomorrow." Brazil won its fifth World Cup title in 2002, but recently it's Spain which has been the dominant team in international football, capturing the last two European championships and the 2010 World Cup. Yet to win the Confederations Cup, Spain has nearly the same squad that won the World Cup, while Brazil has only three players left over from its disappointing

participation in South Africa. "Everybody knows how good they are," Brazil defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo said. "But we are not afraid of having to play them." Spain hasn't lost in 26 matches, since a 1-0 result England in London in 2011. But it struggled against Italy in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup this year and only made it through to the final by edging the European rival 7-6 in a penalty shootout. "The

match against Italy showed that Spain can be beaten," Brazil assistant coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said. "Brazil has to keep playing its own game because it has worked so far. There is no reason to change that just because it will play Spain." Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari added: "We respect their quality, but we will go after the victory. We reached the final just as they did and we can beat

them." Brazil, trying to become the first team to win a FIFA tournament for the third-straight time, had its first practice in Rio de Janeiro on Friday. Defensive midfielder Paulinho, who scored a late winner to give the team a 2-1 victory over Uruguay in the semifinal on Wednesday, was rested because he woke up with flu-like symptoms. He is expected to play in Sunday's final.

fter garnering positive reception from the audiences for his six pack abs in ‘Ghajini’, Aamir Khan is reportedly leaving no stone unturned to get a beefy look once again for his upcoming action thriller ‘Dhoom 3’. Khan is said to have developed a weird habit at the breakfast table. Every morning, the actor religiously checks his BMI (Body Mass Index) before eating, in order to find out whether his diet has been working in his favour or not. Sources have revealed that ever since the film went on the floors, Khan has been extra careful about his physical appearance. “Aamir is not new to bodybuilding. The result of working out diligently for a year was there for everyone to see in Ghajini. But for his next film, he needs to sport a lean look and be on the top of his agility. He checks his body fat content everyday,” a source close to Khan said.

Hamilton wins pole Petra reaches 4th round at Wimbledon at British Grand Prix

SILVERSTONE, JUNE 29 (AP): Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton clinched pole position on his final lap at the British Grand Prix on Saturday, ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg and three-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel. The 2008 champion won his 28th pole with a lap time of 1:29.607, just moments after the 28-year-old Rosberg had clocked the fastest time. Third-placed Vettel edged out his teammate Mark Webber, who is taking the track this weekend for the first time since announcing he was leaving the sport at the end of the year. As Hamilton crossed the line, his team said over the radio "Storming job, Lewis, storming job" and fans in stands draped with a Hamilton banner were on their feet cheering. The 28-year-old Briton has only won the race once — in 2008. "We made the right steps going into qualifying. Still not perfect but it helped," said Hamilton, who had criticized his car's performance ahead of qualifying. "The crowd made a huge difference. I come here with extra boost of energy. I just want to pay them back. This is the first time since 2008 that I've had a car that can compete." Rosberg, who was fastest in practice and had been strong in recent weeks winning Monaco and pole in Spain, said he relished the rivalry with former karting rival Hamilton. "It's a big battle we have. Usually it's close, not today," Rosberg said. "Lewis had a great lap in the end. It's a really big push for the team that we are pushing each other all the time. It's fantastic momentum

we have at the moment." Vettel said he was still optimistic he could win on Sunday. He has already done it once this year, overtaking Rosberg who was on pole to win the Bahrain GP and exposing the fact that Mercedes seems to be quickest in qualifying but often can't keep the same pace over an entire race. "They are bloody quick in qualifying. They seem to be in a different world on Saturday afternoon," Vettel said. "They manage tires pretty well which allows them to get a good lap." With 12 races remaining, Vettel has a 36-point lead over Ferrari's Fernando Alonso. Lotus driver Raikkonen is another eight points back in third and Hamilton is fourth. The surprises of qualifying were Paul di Resta of Force India who finished a career-best fifth and Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo who starts sixth. The strong showing could help the Australian Ricciardo in his bid to replace Webber at Red Bull. The team said Friday it is looking at Kimi Raikkonen and Ricciardo and the other Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne as a replacement. Vettel came from Toro Rosso, which is also owned by Red Bull. While Hamilton had a good day, the rest of his rivals struggled. Raikkonen will start ninth and Alonso 10th — his worst place on the grid this year. It was a disappointing qualifying for home favorite Jenson Button of Mercedes who just missed out on Q3 by 0.05 seconds and will start 11th while Ferrari's Felipe Massa, who crashed in practice on Friday, settled for 12th.

LONDON, JUNE 29 (AP): Petra Kvitova avoided becoming the latest former champion to be knocked out in the first week at Wimbledon, rallying from a break down in the final set Saturday to beat Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and reach the fourth round. The match had been halted Friday with Makarova up 2-1 in the decider, but the eighth-seeded Kvitova broke right back when play resumed and won the next two games as well. After losing her own serve, the Czech player broke again for a 5-3 lead and then converted her third match point with a forehand winner. "It was another day for me," Kvitova said. "I played really well. I should go for every point and play my game. So I played quite aggressively. That was the key." Kvitova won Wimbledon in 2011 but has struggled to match that performance since and has slipped from second to eighth in the rankings. She has a good chance of reaching her second final at the All England Club, however, having seen second-seeded Victoria Azarenka and former champion Maria Sharapova already eliminated on her side of the draw. "It's still so far away," Kvitova said. "I'm the highest-ranked player (left) in my half, but there's still a lot of great players over there." To have a chance at another title, though, Kvitova said her consistency has to improve. "(In) 2011 I played really well. I mean, I play my best, for sure. Every shot was going to the court," she said. "It's not the same this year. ... I drop off little bit. It's always little bit up and down, but I hope it will be

more up than down." Later Saturday, topranked Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were set to play their thirdround matches, also looking to avoid further upsets after seven-time champion Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were both eliminated early. Because of rain over the last two days, Wimble-

don organizers were playing a bit of catch-up with the schedule on Saturday, ahead of Sunday's rest day. Among several other matches that had been postponed, No. 20 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia beat Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to set up a fourth-round meeting with second-seeded Andy Murray, who won in straight sets on Friday.

Two more seeded players went out, as No. 22 Juan Monaco of Argentina fell 6-4, 7-6 (8), 6-4 to Frenchman Kenny De Schepper, while No. 26 Benoit Paire of France lost 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 to Lukasz Kubot of Poland. As is traditional on the middle Saturday of the tournament, the Royal Box on Centre Court was filled with a number of in-

vited sports stars, this year mainly British gold-medal winners from the London Olympics. Among those getting the biggest ovation from the crowd were cyclists Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton — as well as Murray, who donned a suit and tie to make a brief appearance in the box to celebrate his singles gold medal won on Centre Court.

Upbeat India take on WIndies in tri-series

KINGSTON, JUNE 29 (AP): Experienced opener Chris Gayle slammed 109 off 100 balls Friday as West Indies romped to a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the opening one-day cricket international in the tri-nation Celkon Mobile Cup at Sabina Park. The 33-year-old Gayle blasted nine fours and seven sixes in posting his 21st one-day century as the hosts successfully chased down Sri Lanka's modest total of 208 all out off 48.3 overs. West Indies finished on 209-4 off 37.5 overs, ensuring they earned a bonus point in the tri-nation event that also includes India. Gayle and Johnson Charles laid the platform for victory with an opening stand of 115 in 20.2 overs.

Charles chipped in with 29. Earlier, ace spinner Sunil Narine grabbed 4-40 and fast bowler Ravi Rampaul took 3-38 to restrict the visitors to a below-par total on a true surface. Captain Angelo Mathews top-scored with an unbeaten 55 for the visitors, while veteran Mahela Jayawardene chipped in with 52. West Indies, which won the toss, fought back well after an opening stand of 62 in 13 overs between Jayawardene and left-hander Upul Tharanga. Captain Dwayne Bravo made the initial breakthrough by claiming Tharanga for 25 to an edge through to wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin. West Indies stifled the Sri Lankans after that through Narine, the miserly Darren Sammy

(10-0-34-0) and Rampaul. The long-serving pair of Jayawardene and Sangakkara were both prized out by Narine, the world's No. 1-ranked bowler. Jayawardene struck seven fours in a run-a-ball 52 before he tried to tuck to leg and spooned a catch off bat and pad for Ramdin to collect in the leg side. Sangakkara (17) followed at 104-3, the lefthander lofting a drive straight to Kieron Pollard at extra cover. When parttime off-spinner Marlon Samuels grabbed the scalp of vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal (21), who chipped to midwicket, the visitors were 140-4 in the 32nd over and never fully recovered. Mathews fought a lone hand as no other bats-

man reached double figures. Fast bowler Rampaul ripped through the late middle order in the batting powerplay, removing Lahiru Thirimanne and Nuwan Kulasekara cheaply. Thirimanne lofted a slower ball to long-off while Kulasekara top-edged to deep backward square leg. Narine claimed Jeevan Mendis and Rampaul added the wicket of Rangana Herath before the Sri Lankans limped past 200. Narine claimed his fourth wicket with a doosra to have Lasith Malinga lbw and Bravo wrapped up the innings by having last man Ajantha Mendis caught at slip. Mathews remained not out after hitting five fours off 77 balls. West Indies skipper Bravo finished with 2-37.

KINGSTON, JUNE 29 (PTI): On a roll after their Champions Trophy triumph, the Indian cricket team would aim to continue the unbeaten run when they take on the West Indies, who would be eyeing revenge, in their opening clash of the tri-nation ODI series on Sunday. The Indians got barely a few days to rejoice after their Champions Trophy win before boarding the flight to the Caribbeans and fatigue could be the only worry for a side which looks in unbeatable form. The West Indians, on the other hand, would be eager to extract revenge for the loss to India in a Champions Trophy group match. The hosts have in fact, started impressively in the ongoing series mauling Sri Lanka in their lung-opener. The biggest positive from the game was the return to form of Chris Gayle, who was slightly off-colour in the Champions Trophy. Gayle's marauding hundred, which included seven sixes and nine fours, helped the West Indies overhaul a 209-run target in a mere 37.5 overs. He would without doubt be the backbone of the West Indian batting against India as well. Both the sides are well aware of each other's strengths and weaknesses as their key players have played in the Indian Premier League either with or against each other. Interestingly, rival captains Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo are Chennai Super Kings teammates while Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle turned out for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
