NEW DELHI, APRIL 11 (DNA): While the VVIP culture has almost became a part of Indian society, aviation ministry seems to have made a start to get a clean break from it. If the aviation ministry proposal is approved by the government, Union ministers of state, former vice-presidents, and the cabinet secretary may soon have to queue up at airports and get frisked. According to reports, the proposal, which seeks to prune VVIP categories that are exempt from “pre-embarkation security checks at airports; will be an attempt to curb India’s VIP culture. If the proposal is accepted, except for few VVIPs such as PM, President and governors, rest will have to board planes like ordinary passengers.

NEW DELHI, APRIL 11 (PTI): Upholding the importance of the North Eastern states of India, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said despite their paltry population, the states of the region have made immense contribution to the country. “The population of all these states is meager, just four per cent of our total population but they have made immense contribution to the nation,” Mukherjee said, inaugurating a day-long cultural festival, “Songs and dances of North East”, here. Iterating the region’s importance, the President said that people of the region had actively participated in the freedom struggle. “They gave us eminent political personalities who have contributed and enriched our national lives,”

he said. Owing to its locational advantage of having international borders and rich resource endowment, the President said, the North East region has the potential to become a “hub of economic activities to have interactions with the more prosperous and fast developing regions of the world, that is, all ten states of ASEAN and South East Asia.” Mukherjee, who said he had visited almost all the states of the North East several times during his political career, appreciated the warmth and hospitality of the people and showered praise over the rich and diverse culture of the region’s music and dance. “If you go to any part of the region, youwillbemesmerisednotonly by the scenic beauty but also by the hospitality and courtesy extended by

them,”hesaid, adding,“Theytrulybelieve all human beings belong to one entity, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.” Offering a glimpse of the festival, a special performance comprising the regional music and dances of all the eight states was presented before the President along with a choir performance by the acclaimed Shillong Chamber Choir. Hosted by the Meghalaya government and sponsored by the North Eastern Council, the festival seeks to bring the region closer to the rest of the country. The states of Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland and Manipur set up their stalls at the festival, which saw performances by leading music bands from the region.

Governors will need President’s Breaking the barrier: First woman nod before travelling outside state auto rickshaw driver in Nagaland NEW DELHI, APRIL 11 (DNA): Before travelling outside the state, now governors will have to take prior permission from the President. Also, governors are now barred from spending more than 10 weeks on official visits. According to the new 18-point set of rules notified by home ministry joint

secretary Kumar Alok on February 10, in emergent or extra-ordinary circumstances no visit shall be undertaken by the governors without prior intimation to the President’s Secretariat. Governors will also have to explain last minute travel plans, and will have to send request to Rashtrapati Bhavan for permission

to travel outside the state, at least one to six weeks before travelling. Report also says that governors will have to send detailed itinerary to the President for every official visit and Prime Minister’s principal secretary Nripendra Misra and home minister Rajnath Singh will have to be marked on every request.

‘Government should have no voice in judicial appointments’ NEW DELHI, APRIL 11 (IANS): Eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani on Saturday said that the government should have no voice in the selection of judges as it may cause prejudice in its favour being the biggest litigant in courts. “We must have a system of appointment of judges where a litigant has no voice in the appointment of judges,” Jethmalani said at a seminar here, as he assailed the presence of the union law minister as one of the six members of the National Judicial Appointment Commission. Contending the litigant goes to the court against corrupt and illegal actions of the executive, Jethmalani said: “Therefore, process for the appointment of judge should be such that it should not create a slightest impression of prejudice in the mind of the litigants.” In his key note address at the seminar organised by the Res Publican Law Society, on “The National Judicial Appointment Commission Act, 2014”, Jethmalani said that there must be complete respect and

distance between judges and the litigant. He expressed an apprehension that the law minister’s presence could result in a situation of quid pro quo in the selection of judges for appointment to higher judiciary. “Corrupt politicians always want corrupt judiciary,” Jethmalani said making an impassioned plea to keep executive off in the appointment of judges. The parliament in 2014 had amended the constitution to replace the collegium system of appointment of judges by the National Judicial Appointment Commission. The National Judicial Appointment Commission Act, 2014 had also been passed in August 2014. Contending that the law minster had no role in the NJAC, Jethmalani said that instead an eminent jurist should be there to represent the legal fraternity and one from the academic world. He described as “vote bank politics” the provision for the representative of the scheduled caste/ tribes, weaker sections and minorities in the NJAC.

When Toliho Chishi first started driving an auto rickshaw, her family and friends thought she had lost her mind. They told her, “it’s a man’s job” and “girls don’t drive auto rickshaws.” But she was undeterred by such comments. Bent on proving that “a girl can take on any kind of job,” Toliho did the unimaginablebecome an auto driver! And today she proudly ferries passengers from 4th (char) Mile junction to Old Showba in Dimapur. Toliho, inarguably Nagaland’s first female auto rickshaw driver is a bold, cheerful and nonchalant woman. She learnt to drive while at school. “I first learnt to drive a scooter, then an auto rickshaw and now I can drive any vehicle except a bus,” she says, laughing heartily. The auto rickshaw she drives is a gift from her mother. She is the sole bread earner in her family. Oblivious to the fact that she is the first Naga woman to become an auto rickshaw driver, she says; “I am doing it for a living; to support my family and not to prove anything.” Not embarrassed about her job, Toliho has surprisingly received overwhelming support from her male colleagues. “On the first day of my

job, they said “ladies first” and gave me most of their passengers,” she said. Passengers, especially women, were also very encouraging and some even gave her extra money for the fare. She earned Rs. 470 (minus petrol charge) on the first day. She gives away every penny earned to her mother. Toliho begins her day at 7:30 am. She first drops students to school before heading to the auto rickshaw parking line where she begins her daily routine. She makes an average of 15 trips per day and works up till 7 pm. Her athletic physique provides her required strength to kick start her machine every time. Most women prefer to sit in her

vehicle and that is why her colleagues jokingly tell her not to “steal passengers.” “Of course, there are enough passengers for everyone but they like to pull my leg,” she says. Some even call her “bhai (brother)” just to annoy her. Toliho dropped out of school while in class 8 and joined the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Academy at Half-Nagarjan. She trained in athletics. But she quit the academy after a year and went back home because she couldn’t stay without her mother. “My father has passed away and since I am the youngest in the family, I am very attached to my mother,” she explains. Toliho is

not only a good driver; she can paint, play the drums and is a philanthropist in her own way. She gives a portion of her earning to the church and to the poor. Despite initial discouragement from people, Toliho has proven that women can break the barriers and perform any of a “man’s job”. She hopes that what she has initiated will set an example for other young girls to follow. “If I can do it, any other girl can too. I don’t mean they have to become a driver but they shouldn’t be embarrassed about earning a livelihood in an honest way,” Toliho says. She plans to continue driving her auto rickshaw as long as she can.

Between 30,000 to 50,000 cases and approximately 15,000 deaths are reported each year; however, the actual number of cases is likely to be much higher as there is lack of diagnostic capability and reliable surveillance data.

New project to Hill Area Committee in Manipur protect the ‘Ethnic is totally ineffective: BD Behring Architecture’ of NER Our Correspondent Imphal | April 11

Former MP BD Behring today said the Hill Area Committee (HAC) of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is totally ineffective as it is powerless. Behring was speaking at a one-day open dialogue on “Contemporary Issues of Manipur” organized by Emboi Serto-led All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM) at Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Chingmeirong here. The former MP said the HAC which aimed at providing legislative protection to the interest of the hill areas has become a toothless committee as it has failed to act as an effective body.

The Fifth Schedule and Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of the India provide the mechanism for the administration of the Scheduled Tribes and categorized into two areas. One is called the Tribal Areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and some selected areas of Mizoram under the Sixth Schedule. The tribal areas of Manipur are included in the Schedule Areas but not covered by the Tribal Areas of the Sixth Schedule. Behring said the long-pending demand for the Sixth Schedule provisions for the Manipur Hills has remained unfulfilled for years and therefore, the Manipur Government continues to deny tribal’s rights.

Assam minister violates law, enters Kaziranga with firearm GuwAhATi, April 11 (iANS): Assam Forest Minister Atuwa Munda entered the Kaziranga National Park - a world heritage site famous for one-horned rhinos with a firearm dangling from his waist, "violating" the wildlife act. Munda, accompanied by top forest officials, went to the park on Friday at around 10 p.m. and was surrounded by forest guards besides his personal bodyguards provided by Assam Police. This action of the minister drew flak from conservationists and wildlife lovers. Wildlife NGO Natures Beckon condemned the incident, saying the minister has not only failed to protect the rhinos but also failed to respect the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act. "The minister's move to enter the park with a firearm is a kind of political gimmick to impress people and cover-up their (the government's) failures," said Soumyadeep Datta of Natures Beckon. He said the act clearly stated that except forest officials and guards, no one can enter wildlife sanctuaries or national parks with a firearm. Park director M.K. Yadav, however, said the minister did not violate the wildlife act. The forest minister could not be contacted for comment. However, a section of park officials said the minister had violated guidelines under the act. "We do not allow police force to enter the park with guns. Munda is a minister and not a forest official who should be allowed to enter the park with a gun," a park official said on the condition of anonymity.

During the rule of the Maharaja the ratio of tribal was 95 percent but at present, the government ratio is 31 percent while the non-government calculation based on the practical ground is not more than 26 percent. The fast deduction in the ratio of the tribal section of the population is at the threat of existence and so we are demanding for separate tribal state like that of Telengana and hope that in the near future the central government is going to fulfil our demand," said N.C. Debbarma, president of IPFT. He further added that his party had placed the demand for separate tribal state to the UPA government and as well as to the NDA government. The poll which is scheduled for the first week of May has 758,554 eligible voters, including 375,117 women. 28 representatives will be elected through direct election out of the total 30 seats. The remaining two would be filled by Government nominees.

Meghalaya apprises Assam on Labourers death ShilloNG, April 11 (pTi): Meghalaya government has intimated the Assam government on the preliminary findings over the death of 14 labourers in a remote village in East Jaintia Hills district last week where they allegedly died of consuming poisonous fruits, officials said today. Chief Secretary P Barkos Warjri has assured all assistance and cooperation to his Assam counterpart Jitesh Khosla in connection with the case even as a police inquiry headed by IGP A Sun is yet to submit its report, they said. Besides an IG level inquiry ordered into the incident, the state police is awaiting report on the viscera samples taken from the victims to ascertain the cause of death presumably due to food poisoning after consuming the poisonous fruit, the official said. On April 6, at around 8:30 am, the labourers were reported to have found been dead at their makeshift camp in a remote village in Saipung area and preliminary investigation revealed they had consumed a highly poisonous fruit grounded together as 'chutney', Superintendent of Police M K Dkhar said. The bark of the tree is also used by the locals for partial poisoning of fishes in the river. According to the police, it is suspected that the labourers had no knowledge about the poisonous content of the fruit and might have consumed the same on April 5 evening for dinner.

The tribal people of Manipur have been demanding that provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian constitution be extended to the tribal areas. Under the Schedule, financial and legislative powers can be provided so that tribal people can administer their subjects as per their customs and tradition, apart from enabling them to protect their land. He also referred to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Manipur —Tamenglong, Chandel, Churachandpur, Sadar Hills, Ukhrul and Senapatiwhich he called feeble councils. These ADCs have been pushing for devolution of power and functions.

The elections for these ADCs were not held from 1989 to 2010 as the demand for extension of the provisions of the Sixth Schedule Provisions to these councils gather stems. However, it was subsequently revived and elections were held in 2010. The next election to the ADCs is slated for May 30 this year. He further urged the Manipur Government to fix the fund allocation in the hill districts according to the size of the geographic area and to stop providing fund in line with population. “There is also a great disparity in the fund allocation process of the State Government,” he accused. On the issue of Catholic

Schools in Manipur, Behring called for making all educational institutions a ‘disturbance free zone” and pointed out that Missions schools are far better than Government-run schools in the state. Apparently referring to the current ban on all Catholic schools in Manipur by a militant group, Behring reiterated that no group must disturb educational institutions. Referring to frequent bandh and blockades, he said people should not call strike at the drop of a hat. He admitted that bandh and blockades are democratic agitation, but added that no organization must take it up over pity issues.

AFSPA in AP due to state govt's failure to curb militancy: BJP iTANAGAr, April 11 (pTi): The Arunachal Pradesh unit of BJP today said that the decision to impose Armed Forces Special Powers' Act (AFSPA) in 12 districts of the state was taken due to failure of the state government to curb militant activity which is on the rise in recent times. "It was not a unilateral decision of the Centre. Regular intelligence feedbacks have painted a dismal scenario of the prevailing law and order situation in the

state," BJP state unit president Tai Tagak said here. "Even Chief Minister Nabam Tuki recently pleaded with the union home ministry to deploy 2,000 additional para military personnel to tackle insurgency in the state," he said. Tagak said earlier AFSPA was imposed on an area of 20 km of each district bordering Assam. However, after the December carnage by NDFB(S) in Assam, the Centre has launched Op-

eration All-Out in Assam. This has led to the militants sneaking into Arunachal Pradesh beyond the AFSPA area where operation by the security forces cannot be launched. "In the recent review meeting of Unified Command structure in Guwahati the representatives from Arunachal Pradesh highlighted the grim situation in the state...There is no pro-active government in the state to control the law and order situation," he said.

On people's apprehension about extension of AFSPA to entire state, Tagak said it was not clamped on the entire state but to 12 districts which would be lifted when situation normalises. "AFSPA is an evil necessity. Its imposition in 12 districts has exposed the state government's failure to curb insurgency. We do not want such a draconian law in our peaceful state but situation has compelled the Centre to take such a decision," he added.

Congress MLA's bail plea rejected by Gauhati HC GuwAhATi, April 11 (pTi): Gauhati High Court has rejected the interim anticipatory bail applications of controversial sitting Congress MLA Rumi Nath in connection with alleged links with a kingpin of a pan India auto theft gang and arms dealer Anil Chauhan who was arrested recently. A single bench comprising Justice Indira Shah rejected two bail pleas of Nath yesterday filed in connection with two case registered at Dispur police station and at Azara police station. Nath, who is an MLA from Borkhola in Cachar district, had filed for anticipatory bail on April nine following the arrest of her estranged second husband Jacky Zakir. The first case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged against her for allegedly receiving a stolen vehicle from Chauhan, while the case at Azara was registered in connection with Chauhan's arrest on April three last. Zakir, who is currently in police custo-

dy, was arrested on April 8 from his house at Badarpur in Karimganj district. Nath's personal security officer Bedabrata Barpatra Gohain was also in police custody after he was arrested from the Special Branch headquarters here. During investigations, it was found that Chauhan, who is wanted in a number of cases in Delhi and Mumbai besides in other states, was issued assembly car passes allegedly on the recommendation of the Congress MLA. According to police, one of the luxury cars presently being used by Zakir is suspected to be a stolen one and sold by Chauhan to Nath who had allegedly 'gifted' it to him. The controversial MLA had married Zakir in 2012 after converting to Islam and without divorcing her first husband and was subsequently assaulted by an irate mob at a Karimganj hotel in July 2012. The couple, however, parted last year and are living separately since then.

Railways to build station near China border in Arunachal pANAji, April 11 (iANS): Just days after it was revealed that China was planning a railway link to Nepal with a tunnel under the world's highest peak Mt Everest, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Saturday Indian Railways will soon set up a station in Arunachal Pradesh near the India-China border. "A draft of the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) is ready and will be signed soon," Parrikar said, adding he has spoken in detail about the project to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. The defence minister said that the "gravity" of the border issue between China and India has come

down as far as Arunachal Pradesh is concerned. The announcement assumes significance in view of the Chinese foreign office saying this week that the "huge dispute" over Arunachal Pradesh was an "undeniable fact". In the past, China has objected to any step taken by India in context of Arunachal Pradesh, including high-level visits by leaders and announcement of new projects there. State-run China Daily had reported this week that China was planning to build a tunnel under the 8,848-metre high Mt Everest, the world's highest peak, to extend its railway

network in Nepal. The Chinese plan to extend the Qinghai-Lhasa railway line to link it to Nepal's capital Kathmandu. The 540-km long proposed railway line is likely to pass through tunnels under Qomolangma, as Mt Everest is known in Tibet.

Car sales rise for the first time in 3 years Commercial vehicles however declined by 2.8% to 614,961

New Delhi, April 11 (AgeNcies): Sales of passenger cars in India rose by almost 5% to 1.87 million in 2014-15 after a decline in the previous two years. In the past two financial years (ending March 31), car sales dropped 7.7% and 4.7%, respectively, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam). “During FY15, general sentiment improved in the car industry. Investment

cycles restarted and the worries which people were having was greatly diminished,” said Siam directorgeneral Vishnu Mathur. Beside, interest rates and fuel rates came down, reducing the overall cost of ownership, he added. However, the absolute number of sales was still far below the total number of cars sold in the year ended March 2011. During the year, automobile makers launched 27 new models, 26 re-

freshed models and 37 variants of new models. According to Siam data, the overall passenger vehicle industry — including sales of cars, utility vehicles and vans -- grew 3.9 per cent to 2.6 mn units in 2014-15. However, commercial vehicles declined 2.8 per cent to 614,961, though sales of medium and heavy CVs increased 16 per cent to 232,755 units. Mathur said sales of heavy trucks had gained due to the start

of various infrastructural activities like mining and construction of roads, while sales of light CVs have still not picked up. “The ntotal volume of medium and heavy CVs is far lower than in 2011-12,” said Sandilya. Sales of two-wheelers grew 8.1 per cent to 16 mn, backed by strong scooter sales. Scooters as a segment grew 25 per cent to 4.5 mn in 2014-15. Motorcycle sales, however, fell 2.5 per

cent to 10.7 mn. “Motorcycle sales were impacted due to moderate demand from rural markets, which saw limited rainfall last year. Now, the rural markets have been impacted by unseasonal rain,” said Mathur. During 2014-15, overall automobile exports grew 14.9 per cent to 35,73,806 units, compared to 31,10,584 units in 201314. On 2015-16, Mathur said the industry was

“hoping for a moderate growth”.Honda, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki attracted most of the customers in the passenger vehicle segment, with fresh launches. During FY15, Honda’s domestic sales grew 40.7 per cent, Maruti Suzuki by 11.1 per cent and Hyundai by 10.6 per cent, according to Siam data. Sales of Fiat, Ford, General Motors, Renault, Skoda, Tata Motors and Volkswagen declined.

India, Mozambique to deepen ties in oil, gas New Delhi, April 11 (iANs): During Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's recent visit to Mozambique, the two countries discussed all issues related to the existing investment, an official statement said here on Saturday. The ways to expand the relationship in other areas of oil and gas sector were also discussed, the statement said. "It was agreed that there is scope for expanding cooperation in several areas of mutual interest," it said. Pradhan was on an official visit to Mozambique between April 9-10. Besides meeting his counterpart , the Minister of Mineral Resources & Energy Pedro

Couto, Pradhan also met Foreign Minister Oldemiro Baloi and called on Prime Minister Agostino Rosario. Following his meetings, Pradhan tweeted: "Met with Prime Minister of Mozambique; he was Ambassador in India for 6 years & has been a good friend of India." "Had a fruitful meeting with Energy Minister of Mozambique in Maputo; it was agreed to deepen & diversify energy ties. Mozambique is very rich in natural gas & coal; Indian companies have made good investments over there," his tweets added. "Had a fruitful meeting with Foreign Min of Mozambique; had signed MoU on energy cooperation with him in Delhi

in Nov14," Pradhan said in another tweet. Three Indian public sector undertakings - ONGC Videsh, Oil India Ltd and Bharat Petroleum - have already invested in a gas block, Rovuma Area 1 in offshore Mozambique. "This is one of the largest investment of India in any single hydrocarbon asset abroad," the statement said. Top representatives of ONGC Videsh, Oil India Ltd, Bharat Petroleum, GAIL, SAIL and senior officials of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas accompanied the minister. A Confederation of Indian Industry delegation of Indian businessmen with expertise in the oil and gas sector also went.

New YorK/ helsiNKi, April 11 (reuters): Nokia is considering selling its maps business known as HERE, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday, pushing up shares in the Finnish company as well as its network gear rival Alcatel-Lucent. After the exit from handsets, analysts have seen little synergies between the map unit and Nokia's mainstay network gear business. Nokia has hired a financial adviser to explore a sale of the unit, the source added.

puNe, April 11 (pti): Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan on Friday said the rupee might become fully convertible in the next few years. "My hope is we will get to full capital account convertibility in a short number of years," he said, addressing the convocation at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics here. Full capital convertibility means a foreign investor can repatriate his money into his local currency at will; this isn't allowed in India. Rajan said RBI was fairly open to the inflow of foreign funds into the country but there were a few areas such as debt (short-term flows) in which the central bank preferred to keep tight control. On Friday, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley launched India's first international

should be more than that," Inderes Equity Research said on its Twitter account. Nokia sold its oncedominant phone handset business to Microsoft last year, leaving it with its core network equipment business, HERE as well as its patent division. HERE last year had net sales of around 969 million euros with an operating profit of 31 million euros. The unit has signed several orders from the car industry recently. Nokia bought HERE's predecessor Navteq for 5.7 billion euros in 2007.

Full rupee convertibility in few years, says Rajan

Bloomberg first reported news of the sale on Friday. A Nokia spokeswoman declined to comment. Shares in Nokia closed 5.57 per cent higher while those in France's Alcatel-Lucent closed 4.82 per cent higher. The two companies have reportedly held on and off merger talks in recent years. Shares in Dutch navigation company TomTom surged more than 11 per cent after the news broke. "We have estimated that HERE's value is around 3.3-4.8 billion euros, and in a possible deal the price

finance centre in Gujarat. Full rupee convertibility could go a long way in effective functioning of this financial services hub. Many analysts have credited RBI for its policy of partial capital control, which helped it tide over the impact of the currency meltdown, which had hit many South Asian economies with full capital convertibility in 1997-98. In May-August 2013, capital control helped the country withstand the effects of speculation of the US Federal Reserve tapering its monetary stimulus programme, despite India seeing as much as $20 billion being pulled out by foreign investors. Following India, economy being liberalised in 1991, the government and RBI have been progressively lifting curbs on capital flows, as a result

of which foreign institutional investment into domestic has risen to $31 billion now. When asked whether the Federal Reserve's plan to end the zero-interest rate regime soon would have an impact on India, Rajan said: "The global liquidity glut will eventually come to an end, when the Federal Reserve starts to increase interest rates." He came out strongly against international organisations that sided with industrialised countries. "In emerging markets, we have been too quiet, saying what the industrial world does is the best for global economies. Sometimes, it is but we need better discussion, better policies," he said. Also, there was a need to avoid spillover of the monetary policies of various countries, he said.

Nissan, BMW recall vehicles to fix problems with fuel pumps Detroit, April 11 (Ap): Nissan and BMW are recalling more than 94,000 vehicles because the fuel pumps can fail and cause stalling. The recalls cover 76,000 Nissan Rogues from the 2014 model year and another 18,000 BMW 2, 3 and 4 series models from 2014 and some 4 series cars from 2015. Both automakers say in documents posted Friday by government safety regulators that improper nickel plating inside the pump can cause them to fail. That can cause engines to stall and increase the risk of a crash. Both companies used pumps made by the same supplier, Robert Bosch. Nissan will notify owners in May and BMW will start in late April. Both will replace pumps for free. The problem was discovered through complaints and warranty claims. Neither manufacturer reported any crashes or injuries.

RBI warns public against ‘balance checking’ app cheNNAi, April 11 (iANs): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Saturday warned the general public that it has not developed any software application allowing a person to check balances in various bank accounts. The software application has the RBI logo on it with the title ‘All Bank Balance Enquiry No’ and has listed several banks with either mobile number or call centre number. “The Reserve Bank wishes to clarify that it has not developed any such application. Members of public are, therefore, advised to use the application, if at all, at their own risk,” RBI said.

CCSU serves ultimatum to SCERT director Tuensang, april 11 (Mexn): The Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CCSU), the apex student body of Chang community, has served 30 days ultimatum to the Director of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Nagaland in regards to relocation of entire District Institute of Educational Training (DIET), Tuensang. The ultimatum was served on April 9. A press statement from CCSU vice president, Kelep Chang and assistant general secretary, Nayang Chang said that the ultimatum was served based on the “lackadaisical attitude” of the department concerned. It noted that the

Confederation had submitted a representation dated 31-03-2014 and memorandum on 01-09-2014 to the Director of SCERT for immediate construction of DIET, Tuensang. The proposed construction was approved by the Union Ministry consisting of one main building to accommodate the office, four class rooms and one conference hall, 61 bedded hostel for boys and 61 bedded hostel for girls, one principal quarter, one building with four dwelling units quarters for academic personnel and one building with 4 dwelling units quarters for grade IV staffs, CCSU stated. However, it alleged, despite several approaches and written intimation to

the authority concerned, there is neither positive response nor any progressive development from the department as yet. The CCSU further said that it has been more than 5 years since the construction of the institute was approved by the Union Ministry. Hence, it served the 30 days ultimatum to the Director, SCERT to do the needful and asking not to politicise while awarding contract so that the workmanship is not compromised, the statement said. Failing to comply within the stipulated time, CCSU cautioned that the department concerned will be held fully responsible for any further course of action by the Confederation.

LCS&RTI seeks chief secretary’s intervention for transparency in scheme DiMapur, april 11 (Mexn): The Life Consumer Society & RTI (LCS&RTI) Dimapur District has sought the intervention of Nagaland chief secretary with regard to the SC/ST/OBC hostels scheme in the State. A press release from the LCS&RTI Dimapur District alleged that the said scheme is being implemented without any transparency and specific guidelines under the direct control and super-

vision of the directorate of food & civil supplies. The Society also demanded that the security deposit amount of the present State stockiest (for all the districts) should be withheld till complete verification of distribution of food grains as per utilization certificate (monthly) is properly conducted at the district level. In order to avoid lapse of monthly quota of food grains meant for the tar-

geted beneficiaries, the Society also suggested that allocation and distribution of food grains to the district be routed through the network of existing Fair Price Shops till “improvement is properly made transparent under Public Distribution System.” The press release was appended by LCS&RTI Dimapur District president, Khekuto Tuccu and former president/advisor of the Society, Vinito Chophy.

NVCO laments poor sanitation NCCAF holds KohiMa, april 11 (Mexn): Following verbal complaints from the citizens about “disaster of police station‘s septic tank”, the Nagaland Voluntary Consumer' Organization (NVCO) president Kezhokhoto Savi personally visited the area and met police personnel. NVCO Press & Media Cell stated in a release that the police station concerned immediately replaced the septic tank pipe. Pointing out the absence of sanitation in Kohima town, NVCO stated that because of lack of proper toilet facilities and drainage system, waste are disposed off in the street creating foul smell and terrible living conditions for inhabitants. “Even public fail to

do on their part such as when they see a newly constructed drain or even before completion, they tend to throw all sorts of domestic waste thinking that drainage is waste bin. Some people even built latrine and pigsty on top of the drainage and clogs the drains. During rainy season, some of the citizens have habits of opening septic tanks at peak hours. Taking advantage of rainfall, they open their septic tanks and creating a very terrible and unbearable smell,” said the NVCO Press & Media Cell. It further added that NVCO has been constantly asking the competent authority to issue an order or direction to ban pigsty and opening of septic tank in the state capital town.

Reconciliation – NPF’s only lifeline for stable government

T

izing on the unwavering support extended to the party by the Naga people and securing the party’s future, the party resorted to destroy itself due to vested interest. The tug-of-war among the party legislators for the Chief Minister’s post after Neiphiu Rio vacated to become a Lok Sabha member, blinded them from their responsibilities towards the people of the State. Seeking lucrative berths and constantly changing leadership seems to have become the political order of the day. Now having already lost two good years as a result of internal political instability, the party bosses and the legislators need to wake up and realize the

he emergence of Naga people’s Front (NPF) as a political force from the ashes of ‘Bedrock of Naga Society’ in 2003 saw an era of new politics in Nagaland. The NPF after assuming power in 2003 with its pro-people policies started winning the confidence of the people. This was made visible during the 2008 Assembly polls and reaffirmed in 2013 when the party manage to finally bulldoze its main rival, the Congress, by winning 38 out of 60 seats. With the faith of the Naga people reposed heavily of the party’s leadership to perform, the regional party ought to have kept its political vision clear. Instead of capital-

moral responsibility they owe to the people. To start with, the ongoing political scenario fuelled by leadership change needs to see an early end. As the adage clearly teaches us, ‘with great power comes great responsibilities’, the legislators as well as the party workers, starting from the president, could do well to initiate a reconciliation process at the earliest. This is also the wish of the people. More so, as a Christian state, the principals of our faith should not be forgotten. Senior party leaders Dr. Shurhozelie and Noke Wangnao instead of aiming their guns on one another should initiate the reconciliation process- an act

which will be well appreciated. For prolonging the on-going political impasse will not work to anyone’s benefit but only amount to stalling all round development. Something the leaders themselves would not want to be remembered for. Besides, to bring political instability is not the reason they have been elected to power in the first place. Finally, the party needs to realize that the Naga people have not forgotten the NPF party’s manifesto which brought them back to power for three consecutive times. Hence, the least they should do is to bring back normalcy through reconciliation and allow the government machinery to function

effectively for progress and tranquillity in the State. Lastly, if the reconciliation process is taken up in later and spirit, it could go a long way to strengthen the leadership of Dr. Shurhozelie, as a veteran regional politician and chief minister TR Zeliang. However, any partial process could destroy the future of the party and lead to a worsen situation which will be against the wishes of the Naga people. So it will be the sincere prayer of all party well wishers that a total reconciliation process is initiated to resolve the imbroglio at the earliest without any bias.

wo dozen scruffy skateboarders launched perilous jumps in a soaring old church building here on a recent night, watched over by a mosaic likeness of Jesus and a solemn array of stone saints. This is the Arnhem Skate Hall, an uneasy reincarnation of the Church of St. Joseph, which once rang with the prayers of nearly 1,000 worshipers. It is one of hundreds of churches, closed or threatened by plunging membership, that pose a question for communities, and even governments, across Western Europe: What to do with once-holy, nowempty buildings that increasingly mark the countryside from Britain to Denmark? The Skate Hall may not last long. The once-stately church is streaked with water damage and badly needs repair; the city sends the skaters tax bills; and the Roman Catholic Church, which still owns the building, is trying to sell it at a price they can’t afford. “We’re in no-man’s-land,” says Collin Versteegh, the youthful 46-year-old who runs the operation, rolling cigarettes between denouncing local politicians. “We have no room to maneuver anywhere.” The Skate Hall’s plight is replicated across a continent that long nurtured Christianity but is becoming relentlessly secular. The closing of Europe’s churches reflects the rapid weakening of the faith in Europe, a phenomenon that is painful to both worshipers and others who see religion as a unifying factor in a disparate society. “In these little towns, you have a cafe, a church and a few houses—and that is the village,” says Lilian Grootswagers, an activist who fought to save the church in her Dutch town. “If the church is abandoned, we will have a huge change in our country.” Trends for other religions in Europe haven’t matched those for Christianity. Orthodox Judaism, which is predominant in Europe, has held relatively steady. Islam, meanwhile, has grown amid immigration from Muslim countries in Africa and the Middle East. The number of Muslims in Europe grew from about 4.1% of the total European population in 1990 to about 6% in 2010, and it is projected to reach 8%, or 58 million people, by 2030, according to Washington’s Pew Research Center. For Christians, a church’s closure—often the centerpiece of the town square—is an emotional event. Here people have worshiped, felt grief and joy, and quested for a relationship with God. Even some secular residents are upset when these landmarks fall into

disuse or are demolished. When they close, towns often want to re-create the feeling of a community hub by finding important uses for these historic buildings. But the properties are usually expensive to maintain—and there is a limit to the number of libraries or concert halls a town can financially support. So commercial projects often take the space. Europe-wide numbers of closed churches are scarce, but figures from individual countries are telling. The Church of England closes about 20 churches a year. Roughly 200 Danish churches have been deemed nonviable or underused. The Roman Catholic Church in Germany has shut about 515 churches in the past decade. But it is in the Netherlands where the trend appears to be most advanced. The country’s Roman Catholic leaders estimate that two-thirds of their 1,600 churches will be out of commission in a decade, and 700 of Holland’s Protestant churches are expected to close within four years. “The numbers are so huge that the whole society will be confronted with it,” says Ms. Grootswagers, an activist with Future for Religious Heritage, which works to preserve churches. “Everyone will be confronted with big empty buildings in their neighborhoods.” The U.S. has avoided a similar wave of church closings for now, because American Christians remain more religiously observant than Europeans. But religious researchers say the declining number of American churchgoers suggests the country could face the same problem in coming years. Many European churches have been centerpieces of their communities for centuries. Residents are often deeply attached to them, fighting pragmatic proposals to turn them into stores or offices. Mr. Versteegh sees the skate hall as a benefit to the town, saying it serves to protect the building and also gives youngsters a way to enjoy themselves in a constructive way. But he says local Catholic and city leaders refuse to support it, he thinks due to its vaguely rebellious aura. “We don’t know which door to knock on,” he says. Church and city leaders deny that, saying they like the Skate Hall but cite its precarious finances. “Collin wants sweet love. We’re going to give tough love,” says Gerrie Elfrink, Arnhem’s vice mayor. “He wants the easy way—‘Give me money and then I’ll have no problems.’ But that’s not sustainable.” As communities struggle to reinvent their old churches, some solutions are less dignified than others. In Holland, one ex-church has become a supermarket, another is a florist, a third is a bookstore and a

fourth is a gym. In Arnhem, a fashionable store called Humanoid occupies a church building dating to 1889, with racks of stylish women’s clothing arrayed under stained-glass windows. In Bristol, England, the former St. Paul’s church has become the Circomedia circus training school. Operators say the high ceilings are perfect for aerial equipment like trapezes. In Edinburgh, Scotland, a Lutheran church has become a Frankenstein-themed bar, featuring bubbling test tubes, lasers and a life-size Frankenstein’s monster descending from the ceiling at midnight. Jason MacDonald, a supervisor at the pub, says he has never heard complaints about the reuse. “It’s for one simple reason: There are hundreds and hundreds of old churches and no one to go to them,” Mr. MacDonald said. “If they weren’t repurposed, they would just lie empty.” Many churches, especially smaller ones, are becoming homes, and that has spawned an entire industry to connect would-be buyers with old churches. The churches of England and Scotland list available properties online, with descriptions worthy of a realty firm. St. John’s church in Bacup, England, for example, is said to feature “a lofty nave as well as basement rooms with stone-vaulted ceilings,” and can be had for about $160,000. The British website OurProperty is less subtle. “Is modern-day humdrum housing your idea of a living hell?” it asks. “Is living in a converted church your idea of heaven above?” If so, “there is a whole congregation of converts and experts out there ready to help you make the leap of faith.” Unused churches are now a big enough problem to attract the attention of governments as well. The Netherlands, along with religious and civic groups, has adopted a national “agenda” for preserving the buildings. The Dutch province of Friesland—where 250 of 720 existing churches have been closed or transformed— fields a “Delta team” to find solutions. “Every church is a debate,” says Albert Reinstra, a church expert at Holland’s Cultural Heritage Agency. “When they are empty, what do we do with it?” Preservationists say there often isn’t the money needed to create new community-oriented uses for the buildings. That debate can play out personally and painfully. When Paul Clement, prior of the Augustinian Order in the Netherlands, joined in 1958, the order had 380 friars; now it is down to 39. His monastery’s youngest friar is 70, and Father Clement, himself 74, is developing plans to sell its church. “It is difficult,” Father Clement says. “It’s sad for me.” In the U.S., church statisticians say roughly 5,000

The former Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Arnhem, Netherlands, one of hundreds of decommissioned churches, was turned into a skate park.

new churches were added between 2000 and 2010. But some scholars think America’s future will approach Europe’s, since the number of actual churchgoers fell 3% at the same time, according to Scott Thumma, professor of the sociology of religion at Connecticut’s Hartford Seminary. Mr. Thumma says America’s churchgoing population is graying. Unless these trends change, he says, “within another 30 years the situation in the U.S. will be at least as bad as what is currently evident in Europe.” At the Arnhem Skate Hall, the altar and organ of the church, built in 1928, have been ripped out, while a dusty cupboard still holds sheet music for a choir that hasn't sung in 10 years. A skateboard attached to a wall urges, “Ride the dark side.” Two dozen young men speed along wooden ramps and quarter-pipes, their falls thundering through the church, as rap music reverberates where hymns once sounded. An old tire hangs on the statue of a saint. Puck Smit, 21, a regular visitor, says the church ambience enhances the skating experience. “It creates a lot of atmosphere—it’s a bit of Middle Ages,” he says, between gulps from a large bottle of cola. “When I first saw it, I just stood there for five minutes staring.” Another regular, Pelle Klomp, 14, says visitors occasionally stop by to complain. “Especially the older people say, ‘It’s ridiculous, you’re dishonoring faith,’ “ he says. “And I can understand that. But they weren’t using it.” Mr. Versteegh, who oversees the hall, says city and church leaders won’t discuss their plans with him. The church needs about $3.7 million in maintenance, he estimates, and would cost $812,000 to buy, including the rectory—far beyond his resources. Father Hans Pauw, pastor of St. Eusebius Parish, confirms the parish is trying to sell the church, but says church leaders have no problem with skaters using it for now. He said the parish is talking to a potential buyer. “There are some things we don’t want—a casino or a sex palace or that kind of thing,” Father Pauw says. “But when it’s no longer a church in our eyes, then it can have any purpose.” As for the painting of Jesus holding a skateboard that now adorns the interior, he says, “I can see the humor in it.” Mr. Elfrink, the Arnhem vice mayor, insists the city has done what it can to support the Skate Hall, helping fund the wooden skating floor and paying last year’s tax bill. “I hope it can stay a skate hall,” Mr. Elfrink says. Mr. Versteegh sometimes wonders if it will. “Is there any point in continuing to do this if nobody is supporting you?” he says. “You have a building of value—historic value, cultural value—that is still owned by the Catholic Church. But there are no worshipers anymore.”

able, but according to the singer, the key to producing good worship songs is just good old simplicity and accessibility. "To try to come in and say 'Okay, here's a new style' would be doing a disservice to churches who are looking for new songs. I always push the lines a little bit as far as what I can sing to the church. I always want to come back to the core, and that's songs that are beautiful to sing and that are inspired by God's words," he said. Tomlin added that he wants to give people a voice to worship God, and his songs all focus on the greatness and grace of God. His 10th studio album called Love Ran Red was released last fall, and the album title comes from the chorus of his song "At the Cross." "I think that song is the centrepiece of the album," Tomlin told the Daily Press. "It's a foundational song, and my favourite song I've been a part of for a while. Making an album is about the grace of God and the greatness of God - both of those things. Writing songs pointing to his greatness and how he's beyond us, and about his grace, which is how he draws us close."

hris Tomlin says he will never try to reinvent himself since he prefers writing about worship songs inspired by the word of God. Contemporary Christian artist Chris Tomlin is recognised for his worship songs, and while some singers try to reinvent themselves or their music as the years pass by, Tomlin is quite content to keep on creating worship songs that are inspired by God's word. "I'm not trying to be stagnant or boring, but I never try to reinvent myself or so 'oh this is different' or 'I'm trying to change my music up,'" Tomlin told STL Today. "I'm trying to do the same thing, but hopefully it sounds better every time with simple songs that cause people to sing and worship God." Tomlin entered the music industry back in 1995 and he has popularised many worship songs, like "How Great is Our God," 'Indescribable," and "Whom Shall I Fear." He has won a Grammy Award, two Billboard Music Awards, and 21 Dove Awards. Tomlin's career success is undeni-

Michael W. Smith relives “Dark Days” Personal “Miracle” with Sovereign Hannah Goodwyn| CBn hree-time Grammy winner Michael W. Smith has more to say and offer to Christian music fans, believers in Christ and non-believers alike. His new worship album, Sovereign, opens up a new chapter for him, as a creative artist and worshiper. In a recent interview with CBN.com, Smith recalls making Sovereign, filtering more than 100 songs down to the 12 that appear on the record, but also about his own "Miracle" of overcoming his "dark days of drugs". Hannah Goodwyn: How do you see what your new song "Miracle" says as it pertains to your personal life? What miracle has God done in your life that you want to share with people? Michael W. Smith: Oh gosh, I should have been dead. I almost died a few times during my dark days of drugs, just bad choices. I got rescued after being in the gutter. I could be in the street, gosh, the list goes on. The list goes on just based on the faithfulness of God. I had a good mom and dad. I had a praying mom and dad. And you know what, for those who don't, I believe that God can father you and God can mother you, so my mom was a perfect example of that. She got left on the doorstep when she was eight years old with her two younger sisters and brother, and her real mother walked out and never came back. So my mom could have been a mess, but she just chose to let God mother her and she's awesome. There's just so many factors, so many miracles happened. I am a miracle. I'm a walking miracle at the end of the day. Goodwyn: Do you think about that time long ago especially while singing this song? Smith: You know what, I probably need to go back and reflect on it more. I mean, I think about it from time to time, especially during interviews. Sometimes people want to bring up what happened back then, "How did you get deceived? How did you get rescued?" So I sort of go back and obviously when I'm answering the question I have to play that again through my mind. It doesn't freak me out. I think probably the biggest thing is just going, Oh my gosh, how stupid I was and how I bought into the lie and almost lost my life over it. So it's just scary. What could have been and what is, it's

New 'Bible' replaces every mention of God with 'Kanye West' Carey Lodge

anye West is famous for trying to steal other people's thunder, but it seems unlikely that even he would try to knock God off the top spot in the Bible. However, someone has created the 'The Book of Yeezus: A Bible for the Modern Day' which replaces every mention of God with the rapper's name. "The Book of Yeezus is a creative vision, bound in a gold leaf-etched, illustrated, black leather book that details the story of Genesis – for the new age," a website promoting the book reads.

"In its foreword, we explore our culture's state of religiosity and its capacity for wonder. How does spirituality, an evolutionary reflex, manifest in a digitized world? Why does Kanye West take such outsized significance in the lives of many? "The Book of Yeezus is an interventionist art, coffee-table novelty, that will appeal to Kanye fans everywhere and those made curious by this enormous cultural phenomenon." On Etsy, where the book was first made available, the creators said: "For this generation, Generation Y, Kanye West is not only its greatest spectacle, but in some senses, a spiritual figure. "We are here to spread a doctrine. Well, a

pseudo-doctrine. We ask you to use your pulpit for Good." Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's wedding pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr: 'Anyone that preaches Jesus can have a relevant message' Pastor Rich Wilkerson who

married Kim and Kanye says his church is for everyone, 'from the nameless to the famous' West, who last year married Kim Kardashian, is a self-professed Christian and regularly includes religious references in his music. "I'm Christian, and I'm hip-hop. So you mix those two things together, and you want to express yourself a certain type of way, and be bold. I wanna be like Christ. That's not to say I have a god complex. But it's like, if people pick a favourite Halloween character it's like, that's what I would pick! Don't

people pick people that they look up to?" he said of his last album, Yeezus, which included a track titled "I am God". He also said in a recent interview with Vulture that his upcoming album will be "a joyful noise unto the Lord". The creators of The Book of Yeezus said the text is in great demand. "We've gotten a helluva lotta orders. Actually, we sold more Books than we have sitting in the kitchen," they wrote in an update. "Please understand that from your time of purchase, there will be an extra delay in delivery time as we wait for more books. Moses walked through the desert for 40 years. A few extra days ain't much."

History and mythology: Temple of Artemis at Ephesus is one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. It was a structure famous for its imposing size and for the works of art that adorned it. Artemis, in Greek religion, is the goddess of wild animals, the hunt, and vegetation, and of chastity and childbirth. Goddess Artemis was identified by the Romans with goddess Diana. The temple was destroyed by invading Goths in AD 262 and was never rebuilt. Little remains of the temple, though there are many fragments, especially of sculptured columns, in the British Museum. The controversy: The controversial issue of women in church leadership arises mainly from the apostolic ruling given in 1 Timothy 2:11-13. "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve." “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church” (1 Corinthians 14:33-35). At first glance these few verses seem to disqualify women from leadership in the church. But often the first impression may not the right reading. Moreover this is not consistent with the rest of the scripture and Paul’s own Epistles. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:28 & 29). Damage control: Ephesus was famous for the Temple of Diana and Corinth for the Temple of Aphrodite. Both Diana and Aphrodite are pagan fertility goddesses. Prostitution flourished in both Ephesus and Corinth. There were hundreds of temple priestesses who worked as sacred prostitutes. These temples were more like sacred brothels.Paul saw the danger from these pagan women and had to adopt damage controlmeasures to protect the church. His instructions were culturally shaped and sensitive. He had no other option but to restrict the role of women in Ephesus. The Great Commission: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”(Matthew 28:19 &20). “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction” (2 Timothy 4:2). The Gospel of Jesus is never presented as a suppressing influence in the lives of women, but a liberating force. We find women playing key roles of ministry in the New Testament. In today’s world, we see many women who give testimony to the call of God in their lives. God has chosen and seized their lives and they must submit in obedience. God is calling women to leadership in church today. Some famous women in the Bible: Prophetess Miriam (Exodus 15:20) Prophetess Deborah (Judges 4:4) Prophetess Huldah (2 Kings 22:14; 2 Chronicles 34:22) Prophetess Noadiah (Nehemiah 6:14) Isaiah's prophetess wife (Isaiah 8:3) Esther who became Queen ranks second togive deliverance to Israel. Prophetess Anna (Luke 2:36) Teacher Priscilla andteacher Aquila (Acts 18:24-26) Prophetess daughters of Phillip (Acts 21:9) Phoebe a deaconess (Romans 16:1-3) From the Old Testament to the New we find that women served God in many different ways. This is not to say women are in authority over men but they have authority to serve as God sees fit. This is God’s decision and we are to be obedient to our calling. Different gifts and roles: There are many different offices in which God will appoint womenand many will have more than one gift. There are teachers, preachers, evangelists, prophets, seers, healers, pastors-shepherds, apostles, scribes, etc. 1 Corinthians chapter 12 and chapter 14 talks about each of us (meaning both male and female) will be given different gifts to serve Him with. There is no difference when the Holy Spirit speaks through a man or a woman. "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy” (Acts 2:17 & 18). Men and women are both from the body of Christ. There is no distinction, God’s word and gifts are for all. God has commissioned all of us to serve Him in some way with what He had planned before the foundations of the world were formed. God bless you all as you discover your role or roles to serve Him as part of the body of Christ.

Modi in France: india, France ink 17 agreements, india to buy 36 rafale jets Paris, aPril 11 (iaNs): In a major fillip for IndiaFrance ties, India said on Friday that it will buy 36 Rafale fighter jets in flyaway condition as both sides also pushed for early conclusion of techno-commercial talks on the Jaitapur nuclear power plant and inked 17 agreements as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with French President Francois Hollande here. The Rafale deal was the biggest takeaway in the talks between Modi and Hollande. India had shortlisted Rafale, made by Dassault Aviation, in a $20-billion deal for purchase of 126 fighter jets for the MMRCA project in 2012. However, the final deal has not been inked. Hollande said their ties in civil nuclear energy, sustainable energy and defence and the desire to acquire 36 Rafale jets show the partnership has moved to new stage of cooperation, Hollande also voiced indignation at the release on bail of 26/11 mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. “We want to express indignation at the terrorist's release”, which he said was not good for stability or for development and peace. The issue of Lakhvi’s release also featured in talks between Modi and senior politicians in France at the National Assembly.

The French delegation at the National Assembly raised the issue twice. “Twice the French delegation raised the issue of the unfortunate release of Lakhvi in Pakistan and said it was not good news either for India or the world,” Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson India's external affairs ministry, said. Modi said several cities, including Paris and Mumbai, have faced terror attacks and India and France understand each other's pain. He said terrorism was spreading and taking new forms. “It is responsibility of every country to cooperate fully. It should not give them (terrorists) sanctuary and give them punishment at the earliest,” Modi said. Modi's remarks came on a day 26/11 principal accused Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi was released from jail in Pakistan. Modi said that both countries have completed 50 years in space cooperation and added that “I am glad we have released a joint postal stamp today”. “President Hollande has extended full cooperation in our 'Make In India' campaign in the defence sector which is not just a programme but an ambition,” he said in Hindi. Hollande also voiced support to India for a permanent membership of the

"After an inquiry, we found that Sukura, who earns his livelihood by cutting trees, has handed over his baby to the ASHA worker. His wife is mentally unstable. The tribal man has denied selling his baby," said Das. The ASHA worker paid Rs.1,000 to the couple, he said, adding the baby boy was in the possession of the worker.

Paris later this year. “The leaders expressed confidence that the Paris Conference would finalise an historic agreement for the post-2020 period.” The Modi government's initiative to create smart cities in India also came up for discussion. Earlier, Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome in the morning, after which he attended two back-to-back meetings with CEOS where Make in India was the focus. He also visited the UNESCO headquarters in Paris where he spoke of the Indian government's commitment to ensure that every citizen, faith, culture and creed has an equal place in society.

Both sides also urged for early conclusion of techno-commercial discussions on the proposal for construction of six 1650 Mwe nuclear power plants at Jaitapur, with due consideration to project viability and in the framework of an ambitious partnership for large and critical components, the joint statement said. The two also urged their atomic energy establishments to lay an ambitious foundation for

the future of India-France civil nuclear cooperation, including a wide range of subjects, including in the area of civil nuclear liability. Modi also went on a boat ride on the Seine river with Hollande and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius after conclusion of their talks. Both sides 17 agreements, including in the field of civil nuclear energy, railways and space, and three Letters of Intent.

The joint statement said that India and France reaffirmed their commitment to their deep strategic partnership and deepened bilateral ties. It said France and India shared common concerns and objectives in the field of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. “In a further effort to strengthen global nonproliferation and export control regimes, France and India committed to continuing to work jointly

towards India's accession to the multilateral export control regimes, namely, the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the Australia Group, and the Wassenaar Arrangement,” the statement said. On the pressing global challenge of climate change, Prime Minister Modi extended his full support to France for a successful outcome of CoP 21 to UNFCCC to be held in

Airbus assures Modi $2 billion for 'Made in India' Emphasising that each of its A320 family of aircraft has a "Made in India" tag today, Airbus Industrie told Prime Minister Narendra Modi at its huge campus here on Saturday that it will step up its sourcing volume from the country to $2 billion. The occasion also saw the Airbus top brass give its assessment on the need for aircraft by Indian carriers. The country, it said, will require as many as 1,291 planes over the next 20 year -- 913 in single-isle configuration, 322 twin-isled and 56 large ones. A visibly pleased Modi

was informed that the Airbus procurement from India was set to grow further as it planed additional manufacturing and engineering work packages with local firms and accelerate their integration into the group's global supply chain. Such partnership, the group added, will extend to a host of areas such as engineering, pilot training, customer services and maintenance, repair and overhaul capability, or MRO, with Indian partners. In India, the $65-billion Airbus Group already operates two engineering centres: One focused on civil aviation and the other on defence. It also has a research and technology (R&T) centre which together employ over 400 highly qualified people. It claims to be a significant part of the fleets of all major Indian carriers with a market share of well over 70 percent. The group said it counts as partners several Indian firms, notably the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics, Mahindra Group, the Tatas, Wipro, Larsen and Toubro, and Infosys Technologies. The Indian prime minister was in Paris first and then arrived here on Saturday on the first leg of his three-nation visit that will now take him to Germany on Sunday and thereafter to Canada.

Kashmir on strike to protest Poor children move Delhi HC for India plan for Hindu townships free summer uniforms, books sriNaGar, aPril 11 (aP): Shops and businesses were closed in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir on Saturday to protest India's plan to build townships for Hindus who fled a rebellion in Muslimmajority areas. Local political leaders criticized the plan to house nearly 200,000 Hindus in new townships as a conspiracy to create communal division by separating the region's population along religious lines. The issue of returning Hindus sparks high emotion in the mostly Muslim region. Many of the Hindus, known as Pandits, fled after a rebellion erupted in 1989 that they believed was aimed at wiping them out. Muslims in the region, long unhappy with Indian rule, deny that Hindus were systematically targeted, and say India moved them out while casting Kashmir's freedom struggle as Islamic extremism. "Kashmiri Pandits are part and parcel of our society. We will live together, but we will not allow separate townships for them," said Mohammed Yasin Malik, who leads a political group pushing for independence from India. Kashmiri Muslims and Hindus lived together peacefully for centuries

before a 1947 war between India and Pakistan left Kashmir divided between the two as they gained independence from Britain. Within a decade, however, divisions emerged as many Muslims began mistrusting Indian rule and demanding independence or a full merger with neighboring Pakistan. While the 1989 Muslim rebellion was largely suppressed, at least half a million Indian troops remain stationed in Kashmir, and anti-India sentiment still runs deep. This week's protests erupted after Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh asked the region to set aside land for building new townships for Hindus migrating back to the Kashmir Valley. On Saturday, roads were almost deserted while businesses and schools shut down. Armed police and paramilitary soldiers in riot gear patrolled and laid razor wire at major intersections. Clashes broke out Friday between stone-hurling anti-India protesters and government forces firing tear gas, leaving at least 20 people injured, including a photojournalist and eight policemen. Most Pandits have spurned previous resettle-

ment plans that offered jobs and relocation funding. They demanded full security measures and a separate area set aside for them before they return. Seeking to quell the controversy, the top elected official in the Indian portion of Kashmir said Hindu migrants would be settled where they had lived before. "There will be no Israel-type clusters," Mufti Mohammed Sayeed said. The home minister told reporters in New Delhi on Thursday, however, that the central government's plan remained unchanged. Experts said the government would be courting trouble by pursuing any plan to establish Hindu enclaves in the mountainous territory. The proposed settlements "will become walls of insecurity and hate," said political science professor Noor Mohammed Baba of Kashmir University in Srinagar, adding that any pro-India party in Kashmir would lose voter support for endorsing such a plan. "In India, too, it'll have dangerously divisive fallout," he said. "There will be demands from many persecuted minorities such as Christians or Muslims for separate homelands and protected enclaves."

New Delhi, aPril 11 (iaNs): A group of students, hailing from poor and disadvantaged sections, has approached the Delhi High Court against a city school for its failure to provide free summer uniform and books to them. The plea filed by 9 students of Bal Bharti School, Rohini asked the court to direct the school to provide free books, two sets of summer uniforms and writing materials to them and continue providing these entitlements until they complete their education in the school. In November 2014, the court had

directed the school to provide them winter uniforms and books, free of cost, after the students sought its interference on the issue. The plea filed through advocate Khagesh Jha said that the school was allotted government land on concessional rates and has to admit 25% of the students from the economic weaker section (EWS) and disadvantaged groups (DG). The children who approached the court were admitted in the school under EWS and DG category. The plea said that after court's direction to the school

to provide two sets of winter uniforms to them, the school had provided only 1 set of uniform. As the new academic session has began, the students sought the school be directed to provide free summer uniform, books and writing materials. Asking the DoE to initiate appropriate action against the school for their failure to comply with the provisions of RTE Act, 2009, and Delhi RTE Rules, 2011, the plea also urged DoE to frame a grievance adressal mechanism to address parents'grievance in urgent and time bound manner.

'Tense ties affecting funds release for GTA' Will challenge HM order in court: Greenpeace India KolKaTa, aPril 11 (iaNs): The tense relationship between the central and West Bengal governments is affecting the release of central funds for infrastructure development projects in north Bengal, a senior Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader said here on Saturday. As per the tripartite agreement inked between the central, Bengal governments and the GJM, the centre is to give a financial package of Rs.600 crore for three years. The funds are meant for projects to develop socio-economic infrastructure in the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) in addition to the normal plan assistance

to the state government. "In the agreement itself it is mentioned that certain projects would be taken up by the union government. Rs.200 crore for three years (Rs.600 crore altogether) was meant for extra projects... that money hasn't yet reached us," senior leader and MLA Harka Bahadur Chettri told the media here. The area of GTA shall comprise the areas of the entire sub-divisions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong with extended areas of Kurseong. He said the money has to be given by the centre to the state and the state has to route it to the party. "Unfortunately... between union government and state there is estrange-

ment and between state government and our party there is a love-hate relationship going on, it is blow hot, blow cold," he observed. Chettri said both the central and state governments need to do their part. Armed with more powers than its predecessor - the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council formed in the late 1980s - the GTA was created on July 18, 2011 via a tripartite agreement between the GJM and the state and central governments. The GJM has been demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland to be carved out of parts of Darjeeling and its neighbouring Jalpaiguri district.

New Delhi, aPril 11 (iaNs): Greenpeace India on Saturday issued a point by point rebuttal of charges made against it by the government and said it would not only challenge the order in courts but also continue to campaign fearlessly. "This (freezing of accounts) means that GP India's permission to receive money from overseas is currently suspended. It does not mean that GP

India itself has been shut down or will have to shut down. GP India gets nearly 70 percent of its income from domestic donations and will continue to operate on those funds even as it fights the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) suspension," said the environmental watchdog in a statement. The government on Thursday announced it has "temporarily" suspended the registration of Greenpeace India under the foreign contributions law for "underreporting" such funding and conducting transactions in such funds without informing the authorities as required by the law. Along with the 180-day suspension, the ministry of home affairs froze all

seven bank accounts of the organisation and served it a show-cause notice seeking an explanation why its licence should not be cancelled. Greenpeace India said it believed this is an escalation of the intimidation campaign that started with a "leaked" Intelligence Bureau report in June last year. "It is the government using strongarm tactics to clamp down on dissenting voices in civil society. We have been vindicated in our position more than once in the courts. In fact, the Delhi High Court held that the actions of the home ministry in the Priya Pillai case were arbitrary and the charges against Greenpeace India were misconceived," a statement from

Greenpeace said. "We will not only challenge the ministry of home affairs in courts, but also continue to campaign fearlessly on the issues we work on," it said. Greenpeace claimed that some of its domestic accounts have been frozen as well. It also denied the allegation that it had sponsored a Channel 4 (Britain) journalist's visit to the Mahan forests in Madhya Pradesh. "This is one of the many lies in the home ministry report. In a response to Greenpeace, Hugo Ward, director of the programme from Channel 4, denied the allegation," the statement said. On high salaries being paid to certain senior employees, it said: "We believe

that good talent should also be able to work on issues of environment and social justice, and we like to make this possible." "However, we ensure that there is parity between the amount paid to the executive director and the lowest paid employee in the organisation." Reacting to charges of under-reporting of foreign contributions, the organisation said there was a typographical error that was made in a hard copy submitted and "we have admitted to it". The home ministry had alleged that the opening balance of one account for 2008-2009, which was reported as nil in the auditor's certificate was actually Rs.6,60,31,78.

Handshake sets stage for historic Obama-Castro meeting PANAMA CITY, APRIL 11 (AP): With a cordial evening handshake, President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro moved Friday toward a groundbreaking meeting on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas in what would be a remarkable display of reconciliation between two nations. The powerful symbolism of a substantial exchange Saturday between the leaders with the leadership of the Western Hemisphere gathered around them could signal progress. Both sides are still working through nettlesome issues that would lead to the opening of embassies in Washington and Havana, the first stage in a new diplomatic relationship. The first visual clues of an improved relationship — at least among leaders — came Friday evening as Obama and Castro arrived at a Panama City convention center for the summit's opening ceremonies. A reporter for a Venezuelan TV network posted video online showing the two greeting each other comfortably with multiple handshakes and extended small talk, while U.N. SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez looked on. The White House said the interaction was informal and

said they didn't engage in substantive conversation. The two men were expected to speak further Saturday — the first extended conversation between the leaders of the U.S. and Cuba in more than 50 years. Obama, speaking to a meeting of civil society groups, cast the move to end hostile relations as a triumph for the Cuban people. "As the United States begins a new chapter in our relationship with Cuba, we hope it will create an environment that improves the lives of the Cuban people," he told the gathering, which included Cuban dissidents. "Not because it is imposed by us, the United States, but through the talent and ingenuity and aspirations, and the conversations among Cubans from all walks of life so they can decide what the best course is for their prosperity." The White House was coy over the status of the State Department's recommendation to remove Cuba from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terror. Removal is a top issue with Castro because it would not only eliminate Cuba's status as a pariah, but also ease Cuba's ability to conduct simple financial transactions. Nevertheless, the pace of activity over the terror list suggested that even if Obama did

not make an announcement Saturday, one would come soon. The U.S.-Cuban outreach entered a new, accelerated stage in recent days, with Obama speaking with Castro by phone Wednesday and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry holding a lengthy meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez late Thursday. The Cuban foreign minis-

try issued a brief account of the Kerry-Rodriguez meeting, saying they met for nearly three hours in a "respectful and constructive atmosphere." It was the highest-level, face-to-face contact between officials from the two countries since the Dec. 17 announcement that Washington and Havana would move to restore diplomatic relations that were severed in 1961.

Even as Washington talked up the historic shift toward Cuba, leftist leaders in Latin America took shots at the U.S. in solidarity with Venezuela. Barely off the plane, President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela laid a wreath at a monument to victims of the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989. To shouts of "Maduro, stick it to the Yankee," he vowed to personally ask Obama to apologize to

Panama and compensate victims of what he called a "massacre" that left more than 500 people dead during the invasion. "Never again a U.S. invasion in Latin America," Maduro said. President Evo Morales of Bolivia said he backs Maduro's drive to end U.S. intervention in the region. For Obama and Castro, their conversation Wednesday was the first since they spoke Dec. 17. The flurry of diplomacy around the summit was recognition of the historic nature of the new relationship intended to end five decades of American presidents either isolating or working to overthrow Fidel Castro's government. Officials hoped to make the most of the exchange between the two men. Still, Obama made a point of meeting with about 15 Latin American activists, including two Cubans who have challenged Castro's government. The White House identified the Cubans as Laritza Diversent, a human rights lawyer and independent journalist, and Manuel Cuesta Morua, a leader of a centrist opposition group. A large contingent of pro-Castro Cubans who were supposed to participate in a larger civil society forum left shortly before

Obama spoke to protest the inclusion of Cuban dissidents. Obama was already getting praise from allies in the Americas. "President Obama is going to leave a legacy the way he is supporting Hispanics in the United States, and also his new policy for Cuba for us is very important," said Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela. Removing Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terror would be a major milestone and likely generate controversy in the U.S., given the political repercussions of any Cuba opening. The sensitivities over Cuba are especially acute in Florida, a key presidential battleground, and they are likely to ignite vigorous debate among the presidential candidates. Congress would have 45 days from the day Obama removes Cuba from the list to issue a resolution of disapproval, but the margin of passage would have to be veto-proof. Rep. Jeff Duncan, the chairman of a House panel on the Western Hemisphere, criticized taking Cuba off the list. And Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is among Republicans considering a presidential bid, decried the expected Obama-Castro meeting and called the Cuban leader an "entrenched dictator."

Kenya demands U.N. Egypt sentences Muslim Brotherhood leader, others to death removes massive Somali refugee camp NAIROBI, APRIL 11 (ReuTeRS): Kenya has given the United Nations three months to remove a camp housing more than half a million Somali refugees, as part of a get-tough response to the killing of 148 people by Somali gunmen at a Kenyan university. Kenya has in the past accused Islamist militants of hiding out in Dadaab camp which it now wants the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR to move across the border to inside Somalia. “We have asked the UNHCR to relocate the refugees in three months, failure to which we shall relocate them ourselves," Deputy President William Ruto said in a statement. “The way America changed after 9/11 is the way Kenya will change after Garissa,” he said, referring to the university that was attacked on April 2. UNHCR officials were not immediately available for comment. Dadaab hosts more than 600,000 thousand Somali refugees, according to Ruto, in a remote, dry corner in northeast Kenya. Ruto said Kenya had started building a 700-km (440-mile) wall along the entire length of the border with Somalia to keep out members of the Somali Islamist militant group al Shabaab. “We must secure this country at whatever cost, even if we lose business with Somalia, so be it," he said. On Tuesday, Kenya closed 13 informal money remittance firms, hawalas, to cut off funding to suspected radicals. Ruto said any business that collaborated with al Shabaab would be shut down. Al Shabaab has killed more than 400 people on Kenyan soil in the last two years, including 67 during a siege at Nairobi's Westgate mall in 2013, damaging tourism and inward investment. On Monday, the Kenyan air force launched air strikes against al Shabaab targets in Somalia, a country where it has been militarily engaged against the Islamists for several years.

CAIRO, APRIL 11 (ReuTeRS): An Egyptian court sentenced Mohamed Badie, leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, and 13 other senior members of the group to death for inciting chaos and violence, and gave a life term to a U.S.-Egyptian citizen for ties to the Brotherhood. The men were among thousands of people detained after freely elected Islamist president Mohamed Mursi was toppled in 2013 by the military under Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is now president. Sisi describes the Brotherhood as a major security threat. The group says it is committed to peaceful activism and had nothing to do with Islamist militant violence in Egypt since Mursi's fall following mass protests against his rule. Egypt's mass trials of Brotherhood members and people accused of links to the group, as well as its tough crackdown on Islamist and liberal opposition alike, have drawn international criticism of its judicial system and human rights record. The sentences, pronounced at a televised court session on Saturday, can be appealed before Egypt's highest civilian court in a process that could take years to reach a

final verdict. U.S.-Egyptian citizen Mohamed Soltan was sentenced to life in jail for supporting the veteran Islamist movement and transmitting false news. He is the son of Brotherhood preacher Salah Soltan, who was among those sentenced to death. Mohamed Abdel-Mawgod, one of the defence lawyers, condemned the verdicts. "The court did not differentiate between the defendants and put them all in the same basket," he told reporters at the courthouse. None of the defendants were present during the hearing. Badie is the Brother-

hood's General Guide and has already been sentenced to several death and life sentences. His deputy Khairat El-Shater was given a life sentence on Saturday. "OPERATIONS ROOM" TRIAL Rights groups say Egypt, where a popular uprising toppled veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011 and started years of political turmoil, is now cracking down on all dissent. Sisi says stability is needed to revive the shattered economy. Rights advocates have criticised a U.S. decision to end a freeze on military aid to Cairo, saying Washing-

ton is putting human rights on the backburner. The United States has said the decision to end the freeze was in the interest of national security. Mohamed Soltan, 27, arrested in August 2013, had been on hunger strike while in prison. "He deserves the punishment because of the money and instructions from the Brotherhood which were found with him, and for spreading chaos and horror in society," presiding Judge Mohamed Nagi Shehata told reporters. Sara Mohamed, a relative of the Soltan family, said they would appeal the

verdict. "It was a farce trial of the first class...None of the defendants attended the session," she told Reuters by phone. A website calling for Mohamed Soltan's release says he was not a member of the Brotherhood, describing him as a U.S.educated peace activist who was involved in youth events and charities. The website shows pictures of him lying emaciated on a stretcher while in detention. Saturday's case was known in local media as "The Rabaa Operations Room" trial. This is in reference to a sit-in at Rabaa square in 2013 in which hundreds of people protesting at the overthrow of Mursi were killed when security forces tried to clear the area by force. Cairo has defended its actions, saying it had given protesters the opportunity to leave peacefully and that armed elements within the Brotherhood initiated the violence. Saturday's session sentenced 51 people. Those who were not sentenced to death were given a life sentence. The long list of charges included leading and funding an outlawed group, overturning the constitution and planning to spread chaos, a court source said.

Ready to run, Clinton to announce 2016 bid on Sunday Maldives jails former defense WASHINGTON, APRIL 11 (AP): Former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will end months of speculation and attempt a second bid at becoming America's first woman president when she launches her highly anticipated 2016 presidential campaign on Sunday. Clinton, the former secretary of state who lost the 2008 nomination to Barack Obama, will skip a flashy kickoff rally in favor of conversations with voters about the economic needs of middle class families and the next generation. Clinton appears unlikely to face a formidable primary opponent, though a handful of lower-profile Democrats have said they are considering campaigns. Some liberals have tried to lure Sen. Elizabeth Warren into the race, but she has rejected the idea. Should she win the nomination, Clinton would face the winner of a Republican primary field that could feature as many as two dozen candidates. They could include former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the brother and son of former

presidents, and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who is expected to announce his campaign in Miami on Monday. The first official word of Clinton's candidacy will come in a video posted on social media and to supporters online, according to two people familiar with her plans. She will then turn to crucial early-voting primary states such as Iowa and New Hampshire, looking to connect directly with voters in small, intimate settings. The people familiar with her plans spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss them publicly. Clinton has offered glimpses in recent speeches of why she will again seek the White House. Another preview came Friday in the epilogue to the paperback version of her 2014 book, "Hard Choices." "Becoming a grandmother has made me think deeply about the responsibility we all share as stewards of the world we inherit and will one day pass on," Clinton writes in the new chapter, according to a

preview published by The Huffington Post. "Rather than make me want to slow down, it has spurred me to speed up." The Sunday announcement will mark Clinton's formal return to politics following a two-year leave from government. Kicking off her campaign with straight-up retail politics, where she can talk to voters one-onone, would be a departure from how Clinton jumped into her first presidential campaign. In 2007, Clinton also launched with a

video, but followed it with a large, boisterous rally in Des Moines: "I'm running for president, and I'm in it to win it." This time, the emphasis will be making a personal connection, rather than touting herself. Clinton allies say they hope the intimate settings will let people see a more nurturing, empathetic side, along with her sense of humor. By campaigning heavily in Iowa and New Hampshire, which influence the rest of the state-by-state battle for party nomina-

tions, Clinton hopes to avoid making the same stumbles she did in 2008, when she entered the race as a U.S. senator and a heavy favorite only to be upset by Obama. Republicans have been preparing for a second Clinton campaign since she left Obama's administration in early 2013. They intend to campaign against her by equating her potential presidency to that of a "third" Obama term, during which they argue she would continue his most unpopular policies. In the past few weeks, Clinton has faced withering criticism over her use of a personal email account and server while she was secretary of state, as well as the Clinton Foundation's acceptance of donations from foreign governments. Also, Republicans running a select congressional committee reviewing the 2012 attack on a U.S. facility in Benghazi, Libya, which took place during Clinton's tenure at the StateDepartment, are investigating her decision to delete thousands of emails she has deemed personal in nature.

minister for 10 years

COLOMBO, APRIL 11 (AP): A court in the Maldives has sentenced a former defense minister to 10 years in prison on charges of detaining a senior judge, the same case in which a former president has also been jailed in a trial widely criticized as politically motivated. The sentencing of Tholath Ibrahim by the Criminal Court on Friday night came nearly a month after former President Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison for ordering the arrest and detention of Judge Abdulla Mohamed. Nasheed had accused the judge of political bias and corruption. Ibrahim was Nasheed's defense minister at the time of the judge's arrest, which hurt Nasheed's popularity and led to his downfall. The court said it had been proven that Ibrahim conspired with Nasheed to arrest the judge three years ago and helped detain him in an island used

for military training. Nasheed's trial and imprisonment has drawn w idespread international criticism and cast doubt over the Maldives' transition to democracy, which began after Nasheed was elected in 2008, ending 30 years of autocratic rule by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Nasheed resigned in 2012 after weeks of public protests over the judge's arrest and eventually lost support of the military and police. In elections the following year, he lost to Yameen Abdul Gayoom, a halfbrother of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Opposition supporters said his case is politically motivated and is aimed at eliminating him as a potential candidate in the 2018 presidential election. The country's judiciary is widely perceived to be loyal to the Gayooms, the judges unqualified and the laws archaic.

B’desh tightens security ahead of expected execution DHAKA, APRIL 11 (AP): Authorities in Bangladesh heightened security in the capital and elsewhere Saturday ahead of the expected execution of an Islamist party official sentenced to death for crimes against humanity during the country's 1971 independence war against Pakistan. Mohammad Qamaruzzaman, an assistant secretary general of Jamaate-Islami, refused to seek presidential clemency, paving the way for him to become the second person put to death since tribunals were set up more than four years ago to try suspected war criminals. Junior Home Minister Asaduzzman Khan told reporters that Qamaruzzaman would be hanged on Saturday. Qamaruzzaman's family members visited him for the last time in Dhaka's Central Jail, with security tight outside the facility, his lawyer Shishir Manir said. By Saturday evening, the concerned officials to execute Qamaruzzaman had entered the jail, a senior prison official told The Associated Press by phone on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. TV stations reported that a grave had already been dug in Qamaruzzaman's ancestral home outside Dhaka, the capital. On Monday, Bangladesh's Supreme Court rejected Qamaruzzaman's final legal appeal against the death sentence given to him by a special tribunal in May 2013. His only recourse would have been to seek a presidential pardon. Bangladesh executed another Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary, Abdul Quader Mollah, in December 2013 for similar crimes. Previous war crimes verdicts and Mollah's execution have sparked violence. Prosecutors say Qamaruzzaman headed a militia group that collaborated with the Pakistani army in central Bangladesh in 1971 and was behind the killings of at least 120 unarmed farmers. Bangladesh blames Pakistani soldiers and local collaborators for the deaths of 3 million people during the nine-month war seeking independence from Pakistan. An estimated 200,000 women were raped and about 10 million people were forced to take shelter in refugee camps in neighboring India.

IPL player Hokaito, who played for High School Daredevils of the recently concluded 2nd 10th Northern Angami-1 T20 Bash 2015 here at Kohima Village Ground Ziekezou, emerged as the highest wicket taker and man of the tournament. Hokaito commented the 2nd 10th Northern Angami-1 T20 Bash as one of the best tournaments he

had played in Nagaland so far. He complimented Khriehu Liezietsu, parliamentary secretary for Youth Resources & Sports, New & Renewable Energy and Music Task Force for initiating this tournament and the Brotherhood Group for the successful conduct of the tournament. Stating that he had identified many talented players from this tournament, Hokaito was optimistic that such tourna-

ment will certainly take the players to greater heights. Meanwhile, former Naga Wrestling meet champion, Kezhalelie Keretsii, who was also present on the occasion stated that the Naga youth have enormous potential in cricket. He however pointed out that coaching is one area where the State lags. In this, regard, Keretsii held that coaching camps should be conducted starting from the grassroot level.

Lewis Hamilton takes pole for Mercedes at Chinese Grand Prix

SHANGHAI, AprIl 11 (rEUTErS): Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton stormed to his third successive pole position of the season, and third in a row in China, after edging team-mate Nico Rosberg in a front-row lockout for Mercedes on Saturday. Hamilton, unbeaten in qualifying so far this year, lapped the 5.451 km Shanghai International Circuit in one minute 35.782 seconds to take his 41st career pole just 0.042 of a second clear of Rosberg. "Oh, come on guys," exclaimed a frustrated Rosberg when informed over the radio that he had lost out by such a small margin. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, winner of the previous race in Malaysia, will start third. Ferrari, who were helped by a bold strategy gamble and searing temperatures at Sepang, continued to lead the chasing pack but were unable to match Mercedes' formidable one-lap pace in the cooler conditions. Vettel's best time was nearly a second off Hamilton's benchmark. Bra-

zilian Felipe Massa and Finland's Valtteri Bottas, seeking to re-establish their Williams team as Mercedes' closest challengers, were fourth and fifth ahead of Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari in sixth. Former champions Red Bull, who had looked the third-best team after final practice, dropped back with Australian Daniel Ricciardo only seventh. His Russian team-mate Daniil Kvyat, meanwhile, failed to even make it through to the top 10. McLaren had another bleak afternoon and failed to make it past the first session of qualifying for the third successive weekend, once again qualifying ahead of only the backmarking Manor Marussias. Both Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso had hoped to make it into the second phase after an encouraging Friday but in the end missed the cut by just over two tenths of a second and will start 17th and 18th, respectively.

ifferent good writers and educationists have written and share their vast knowledge and different well-experiences on about the two hierarchical educational institution in our local daily paper. A matter of fact, secondary education and higher secondary education are complimentary to each other and interdependent institution cater the needs of our people. From the very inception of our own parliamentary govt. formation just after obtaining our statehood the institution of elementary and secondary has setup to run normal classes upto class 10. The head who look after this institution powers and functions is clearly defined by the concerned school education department. The age of elementary and secondary institution is about 52 years old. On the other hand, the institution of higher secondary even if foremost requirement is a new born up institution. It came into existence some years back only. The staffing pattern suggested recently by the higher authority is just like about a son and his own father. A son after getting married to a beautiful girl and setup a new family of his own responsibility trying to chase out his own father from their ancestral home while his father is still alive. This kind of practices is a curse according to our Naga customary law and religion point of view. The clearly demarcation of powers and functions of these institution will be better to serve the very purpose of our constant specific aim and objective. Joint family system have merits in one way but have more disadvantages in other way. The separate building and other infrastructure facilities will be more better and more convenient for these two family setup. As education is a state subject higher authority of the concerned department look into the matter at the earliest and take action conveniently for the larger interest of all would be highly appreciated and welcomed by all. A CULTURE OF MISOGYNY

U

nion minister Giriraj Singh was under scathing attack from many quarters for his racist remarks against Congress President Sonia Gandhi. The comment by Giriaj Singh was atrocious and frivolous: “If Rajiv Gandhi had married a Nigerian lady and not a white skinned woman, would the Congress have accepted her leadership”. Giriraj said in Hajipur, around 20 km north of Patna. Apparently, Singh was condemned by the political class and women’s groups with Congress Party asking the PM to dismiss him and apologize to the nation. Manish Tewari, a Congress Party leader responded that “It is for Modi to reflect as to what kind of elements and bizarre creatures are there in his government”. However, before leaving for party’s national executive meeting in Bengaluru, BJP chief Amit Shah called up Giriraj and asked him to apologize for using language unbecoming of a minister. When he was under intense pressure he obviously tried to retract by saying “If Soniaji and Rahulji have been hurt by my remarks, I express my regret”. He however tended to justify that his remarks made to journalists in Hajipur and were “off the record” and put the onus on media that seem to have blown this out of proportion. However, he is known for making such irresponsible statements. For example, during the Lok Sabha elections he even went to the extent of saying that people opposed to Narendra Modi can go to Pakistan, for which, he may have been awarded a ministerial berth. The remark reveals the racist overtones and also reflects casual racism that surface often at different levels in recent times. BJP functionary Giriraj Singh’s racist remarks have upset the Nigerian mission in India and it has demanded an apology from the Union minister for his “unacceptable” comments. Acting high commissioner of Nigeria O.B. Okongor suggested that the issue may even be raised officially with the foreign ministry as he said the comments were in “very bad taste”. “We expect the minister to withdraw the comments and apologize to the Nigerian people. We will notify our government about the issue,” he said. Asked whether the high commission would file a formal complaint with the foreign ministry, he said, “We need to file a complaint”. Many thought that the government would do something to salvage situation as India prepares for the India Africa Forum Summit later this year. However, the PM Modi as usual ignored and no action was initiated because Singh belongs to the politically powerful Bhumlhar community in Bihar and is believed to be vital to the party’s campaign in the state that goes to the polls later this year. The website rediff.com ran a commentary headlined: “5 reasons why Giriraj Singh should shut up”. It included this statement of his from last year: “Isn’t it true that all people caught in terrorist activities belong to one community? How could he blame one particular community? Why are so-called secular 2 parties silent on this”? His claims are baseless and all his state-

ments contravene the data and facts available. The facts and data do not match. Giriraj Singh’s comments for the last one year show his pathological perverted mind-set and if someone were to be there as the Prime Minister would not have chosen such an irresponsible person as a minister. Nonetheless, the PM Modi did choose him and continues to tolerate his frivolous statements and comments which lead to this fact and assumption that these fanatical mind-sets keep chanting what RSS & Co wants to say and so there is tacit agreement between them. RSS and BJP seem to be in agreement whatever Giriraj Singh said last year and that was the reason why he has been rewarded with a ministry. We see a clear pattern of utterances being made by misogynists BJP ministers. It is the new ministers, like Giriraj Singh and Niranjan Jyoti (famous for referring to non-Hindus as bastards), who serve in Modi’s cabinet because he agrees with what they say despite the causalities it causes to diverse religious and ethnic communities. The fringe elements like Giriraj Singh can speak only this type of language. They are soaked in a culture of misogyny. They genuinely know only to spew venom and hatred against people and communities. Parties like BJP and other ultra-rightist organisations and fringe elements want people of this sort. This is where we see the danger. People like him periodically make such obnoxious comments openly and have been defending their comments. They have not been reprimanded and gets away without any remorse. People are really fed up because nothing can be done to people like Giriraj Singh. At the most he or whoever will be asked by the PM or BJP chief Amit Shah to tender an apology. There ends the matter. Just for the sake of apology they offer an apology. And there it ends. The leaders and the workers of the Congress Party protested, demonstrated and burnt the effigies in different parts of the country. Everyone wanted Giriraj Singh’s arrest. Congress President Sonia Gandhi against who the comments were passed did not press too much on the issue and in a dignified way did not make any comments. Everyone is aware of the fact that the whole episode is monumental, intense, obligatory and yet with zero result. In BJP we see a bunch of ministers and MPs who are “serial offenders”. They do not have any scruples and their job is to advance their politico-cultural project of Hindutva. He has been uttering much worse statements and deeply offensive comments than this and yet not implicated. This culturally illiterate person is a minister in PM Modi’s Cabinet. In this government one could make any comment against the opposition especially the minorities they are not punished but rather rewarded. Hardly do we see anyone losing their berths. If go deep down the comment Giriraj Singh made, he has insulted the women of India and the world by making such an insinuating statement to a person who is heading a national party and also insulted the citizens of a friendly nation (Nigeria) prompting

the Embassy to 3 tender apology. Nigeria has an option to file a complaint with the ministry of external affairs. In all these episodes what we witness is the widening gap between the ruling party the BJP and the people. Giriraj Singh subtly brought the racism as he employed both the white skin and black skin and in the process made racist comment of the African people. Giriraj Singh’s comments unfold the sick racist mind-set of the communal forces and Hindutva elements. Periodically the fringe and communal forces keep uttering such statements that shame the people of India. It zeroes down to the skin colour such as “white skin” and “black skin”. We should not keep analysing and interpreting these fanatical statements based on our whims and fancies, political and ideological affiliations and consideration. It clearly conveys that Indian society is not only casteist but also racist. It underscores a nasty truth that we should all be deeply embarrassed and ashamed of. By these comments we could very well understand the sexist mind-set of these politicians who view women’s skin in racist and castist connotations. Their atrocious statements reveal deep-rooted and deep-seated prejudices that cut across states and party lines. Every citizens of our country should know that the recent cheap jibes against women have gone up dramatically ever since the BJP came to power almost a year ago. If we make a survey of the vulgar and sexist comments of the fanatical mind-set of these people such as Sakshi Maharaj, Uma Bharathi, Giriraj Singh and Co, we would wonder the level of integrity and maturity of our representatives who represent us in the Parliament and Council of Ministers. The ways with which the nation is governed despite PM Modi’s tall claims portrays the pathetic mind-set of some ministers and MPs. What PM Modi claims and what is happening on the ground contradict each other and do not match at all. There is an ultra-rightist fundamentalist group that triggers and translates the agenda of the BJP and RSS. It is spreading and gaining wide-spread acceptance amongst the fringe-elements. There seems to be a widespread culture of misogyny which is widely accepted by the BJP and RSS and at the same time pockets of strong resistance happening around the country. What we are witnessing is the emergence of yet another evil in our society. It started off as jibes and gradually moving towards rape and killing of women. Mr. Modi is the Prime Minister of India and therefore he ought to be duty-bound for the people of India. He should exert his authority at least now silence these fringe elements and pervert mind-sets not to use divisive comments and further polarise the society. If this trend continues targeting women of our country, there is undoubtedly a backlash from different quarters of our country since these are the very people who are responsible for the mammoth victory of BJP. Do not take people for granted because they are the core of democracy and electoral politics. DR. JOHN MOHAN RAZU Former Professor of CTC, Mokokchung

Nagaland - Assam Border Issue: An Insight

B

y now I am sure; many good numbers of conscientious and sensible people of the State have grasped some basic idea of the contentious border problem between Assam and Nagaland. By this I am referring to those people who have no knowledge on the issue either because they were not from western side of the State or yet to be introduced on the issue either because they are not interested or they have not been affected directly by various developments in the border areas. Or still, they are either young or are group of people who wants to live in their own comfort zone only! However, I have also found many people who are quite familiar with the issue. Most of them are either retired bureaucrats or senior citizens who have been familiarized by recurrent turmoil that frequently erupts in the border areas but sadly could not even raise an eyebrow on the issue at the right time due to reason only known by them. I have also come across good numbers of senior citizens who are ever willing to share some interesting stories and anecdotes. Yet, I must say if these stories relating to our people and land had to be taken with authenticity, then it must be recorded in written, more so since the case is under active litigation process in the Supreme Court. We cannot rely on our oral histories only since it may not be considered as authenticated evidences in the court of law. People must be aware by now that the United Naga Tribes Association of Border Areas (UNTABA), an organization basically trying its best to represent the people living in and around border areas had been continuously raising its voices on the issue but sadly all on the deaf ears. Our joint endeavor is twopronged objective: towards safeguarding the inherent rights of the people of Nagaland by pin-pointing the historical wrongs committed by various circumstances, agencies and factors in the course of our history, and; to protect and safeguard the people living in the border areas who are subjected to daily turmoil from every possible corner. The inexplicable problems faces by our people in their day today lives mostly comes from the people of questionable origins who have been constantly trying every possible means to settle

in these lands tacitly pushed and approved from across the State and the inability of the successive Governments of Nagaland in enforcing various administrative mechanism in support of our people as well as to stop those encroachers. The so called ‘neutral forces’ are directly functioning under the Government of Assam in spite of various existing terms of agreements. They are being issued ‘SOP’ (standard operation procedure) from ADGP of Assam Police. Our own State Administration, instead of raising objections in these unilateral actions of the Assam Government always bows down to the pressure of the Government of India, Home Affairs completely sidelining the terms of interim agreements that not only deprives the rightful occupation and settlements of our people but also completely negates the historical facts. UNTABA had initiated various pragmatic approaches including ‘Peoples’ Dialogue’ conducted on August 9, 2014 with all the stake holders and the people directly affected by the border imbroglio and subsequently submitted a Representation to the Prime Minister of India at New Delhi on November 10, 2014 demanding the Government of India to implement various terms of Agreements made with the people of Nagaland, in particular, on the issue of bringing back the Naga people’s land that were systematically transferred to Assam by the then British Imperial Government of India since mid nineteenth century onward for their administrative conveniences without any positive consideration. It must be clearly understood that the Government of India has deliberately sidelined the rightful claims of the Naga people. Instead of seriously considering our concern, the Government of India is bent on arbitrary bifurcation of the Naga country further through the honorable Supreme Court completely ignoring the Constitutional provisions of Article 3 & 4 and the agreed terms of provisions of ‘9 Point & 16 Point Agreements’. This lackadaisical approach on the issue by the Government of India is more or less fueled by the disunity amongst the people of Nagaland. The emergence of different Naga Political Groups, hydra-headed civil societies and organizations within the State itself fighting

against each other for petty issues and characterized by one-upmanship has given readymade excuses for this indifference. This is the hard realities when the long pending border imbroglio between Assam and Nagaland, the wrong legacy and the relic of colonial British period in north-east India needed utmost attention of all. On the other hand, it is really disheartening to observe the lackadaisical attitude of the successive Governments of Nagaland on the issue since the inception of Statehood. The Government of Nagaland had become an agent in bartering the land of its people instead of safeguarding the same. Signing of an Interim Agreement in 1972 and reaffirming the same in 1979 with the Government of Assam had been one of the most give away agreements. Emboldened by these Agreements, the Government of Assam Forest Department who were given the authority to administer in all the Reserve Forests adjoining the present State of Nagaland have taken undue advantages all along by systematically establishing hundreds of townships, villages, industrial centers, tea estates, etc. within the Naga territories even though the Forest Department of Assam was supposed to take due permission even to undertake maintenance work in the existing roads inside these Reserve Forests which are still yet to be de-notified. Again, by 1985 the Government of Nagaland agreed with the Assam Government in gradually identifying certain areas in the border and declared all the Naga inhabited areas as ‘Disputed Area Belt’ dividing into Sector A to F covering almost all the foot hill areas of Nagaland thereby completely negating the traditional, historical and political history of the Naga people. Not surprisingly the so called ‘Disputed Area Belts’ are now being claimed as theirs by the Assam Government in the honorable Supreme Court through the Original Civil Suit No. 2 of 1988 filed by it. While the land of the people are being systematically encroached upon, the Government of Nagaland, instead of raising strong objections against the continuous and illegal settlements from across the State had been allowing and accepting new batches of settlements, the case in point being Ralan areas. Not only these

developments but also all the existing Assam Police posts in the border areas are illegal because Assam cannot unilaterally establish any armed police Posts in the Reserved Forests in the border areas as per the interim agreements. Nagaland Government meanwhile had already issued exploration and extraction licenses of mineral resources including crude oil and natural gas before ascertaining the mineral deposits beneath the surface as well ascertaining the actual length and breadth of the Naga land. This random action will surely bring wide ramifications in the near future. The Government had also announced ‘Special Development Zones’ specifically mentioning the foothill areas of Nagaland in 2014. The people of Nagaland deserve ‘Smart Cities, Planned Cities’ and planned economic development. However, let us be realistic and ask ourselves - where is the foothill areas stretching from Khelma under Peren District to Tizit under Mon District? The hard fact is that our very own ‘Nagaland FootHill Road’ which seems to be under construction and had attracted media attentions for all the wrong reasons in itself falls under the very infamous ‘Disputed Area Belts’! The question of ‘IBI’ or the unabated influx of illegal immigrants and the people of questionable origins who are invading Nagaland like swarms - the issue which have heated up to such an extent that all of us are dump-founded and I must say confused now, will have serious repercussions now and in our immediate future completely changing the demographic composition in few years time. Let us ask ourselves realistically - how can we ever imagine checking this unabated influx of illegal immigrants in Nagaland when these people are living well inside our kitchen? When we have no boundary, how can we expect ourselves to adopt appropriate mechanism to check such influx? These are some hard facts we must accept and seriously consider for the long term mechanism for posterity. We have been conducting people to people interaction with all the leaders of different tribes and organizations so as to carry forward the issue in its right perspective with all the tribes of Nagaland on board without any tangible outcome so far. Let us question ourselves: Can we

accept the likely outcome of the arbitration process that is currently under active litigation process in the honorable Supreme Court? Can we allow the Government of India to deliberately overlook various terms of Agreements made with the people of Nagaland prior to declaration of Indian Independence and the Statehood of Nagaland? Can we allow further arbitrary bifurcation of Naga lands before the final political settlement is arrived at between the Naga Political Groups and the Government of India? How long do we remain mute spectator whilst Nagaland Government acts according to the dictates of others at the expense of the Naga people’s history? What pragmatic step should we adopt for those transferred Naga lands that are still under Assam, the approximate measured areas of which is roughly 4,974.16 square miles or about 12,883.07 square kilometers as per the records available with the Department of Border areas? Can we afford to sideline these historical realities? It is high time we put our heads and minds together irrespective of our different affiliations and associations. Let us not bind our minds with narrow considerations such as of being from different tribes, eastern, central or of being from southern or for such other orientations. Let us come together as one - a one Nagaland’s family. We should not be overwhelmed by the enormity of problems created by divisions and divisions amongst our people. Instead, we must objectively work together on important issue such as border problem vis-à-vis the traditional and historical land of the Naga people, otherwise, how can we ever expect ourselves to pursue the problem that lies ahead of us with the State of Manipur, Arunachal and Myanmar for that matter in near future? We are fortunate because all the required recorded histories are available with us starting from the ‘Treaty of Yandabo of 1826’ made between the British Imperial Government of India and Burma, now Myanmar. Let us seriously consider on how to bring about broad consensus on the likely step or steps we may need to adopt with all the tribes of Nagaland on board at least on this issue! Hukavi T. Yeputhomi, Chairman, United Naga Tribes Association on Border Areas.

umours about the early release of Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron began doing the rounds last week, but on Wednesday Disney (Marvel's parent company) officially confirmed that the movie will be releasing on April 24, a week before its release in the United States. According to Disney, the film will have the widest ever release for a Hollywood film in India, and will release simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, as well as English. This early India release is steadily becoming the norm for most blockbuster movies. A large portion of movie revenues are now generated from the "overseas market", i.e., outside the United States of America. For example, going by only the US revenues, films like Transformers: Age of Extinction and Pacific Rim would be considered flops, but have become hits thanks to global revenues. Superhero film buffs have been looking forward to this film since the release of the Aveng-

ers in 2012. The trailer for Age of Ultron has us worrying for Captain America, although we don't think the bad news will happen in this film anyway. Age of Ultron is going to be - in some ways - a more challenging film to make, since it keeps all the original Avengers, but adds a new villain Ultron (the first film used Loki, who was already familiar to audience from Thor) and several new characters such as Vision, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. The film is also expected to introduce Wakandans, for the eventual Black Panther movie, and possibly Inhumans, who might have a very important role to play in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Marvel has a good track record with team-ups - the first Avengers movie, and last year's Guardian's of the Galaxy could be the best films in the MCU so far and that's why Age of Ultron was on list of the ten films we're most excited about in 2015.

antasy drama TV series “Game of Thrones” piracy has spiked ahead of the April 12 premiere of the fifth season. According to rights management and piracy protection firm Irdeto, episodes of “Game of Thrones” were downloaded more than seven million times during a three-month period this year, reports hollywoodreporter.com. That’s a 45 percent jump from the 4.9 million illegal downloads that the firm reported for the same period in 2014. The numbers make “Game of Thrones” the most pirated show from February 5 to April 6 this year, ahead of “The Walking Dead” (5.7 million downloads), “Breaking Bad” (3.8 million), “Vikings” (3.4 million) and “House of Cards” (2.7 million), according to Irdeto’s research. Brazil ranks as the top country for illegal “Game of Thrones” downloads. France comes in second and US rounds out the top three.

ctress Sofia Vergara says her beau Joe Manganiello's age is the only thing she would like to change in him because he is four years younger than her. "There's nothing about him I d change other than the fact that he's four years younger than me," she told Vanity Fair in an interview. The 42-year-old "Modern Family" star started dating Manganiello, 38, shortly after she split from Nick Loeb, her fiance at the time. Vergara revealed Manganiello approached her the same day as she announced her break-up from Loeb. "The day that I sent the press release announcing the breakup, Joe

immediately contacted Jesse Tyler Ferguson," Vergara recalled. "He was like, 'Please, please, please tell her I want her number.' And I'm like, 'Jesse, no, he's too handsome.'" Vergara, however, gave in after her "Modern Family" co-star pleaded with her to consider the "True Blood" actor. "Then, after two days of Jesse trying to convince me, I m like, 'Okay, give him my number,'" she said. "I'm thinking, I'm in New Orleans shooting, and he's in LA. Nothing's going to happen. But we started talking a lot, and then he showed up in New Orleans. Since then we've been inseparable," she said.

Angelina Jolie’s ‘Africa’ project on shaky ground

A

frica, the feature about paleo-archaeologist Richard Leaky’s battle with ivory poachers in Kenya that was to be directed by Angelina Jolie and star her husband Brad Pitt, is said to be on shaky ground. The feature was being produced through David Ellison’s Skydance Productions from a script by Oscar winner Eric Roth. Sources close to the project say things started to turn just recently over budget involving creative issues. Tons of development money was poured into this project over years. Sources said that Ellison was going to put in 50%

and then pulled back and said Skydance would put in 25%. One of the complicating factors that contributed to where the film is now, is the role that the love story would play in the movie. Jolie always intended for the love story to be only a part of the movie; Skydance wanted the love story to become the centerpiece of the film. That’s apparently not the film that Jolie wanted to make. After that, Skydance halved its commitment, though sources on that side denied Skydance was ever in for more than 25%, the same commitment that Paramount Pictures made to the financ-

ing equation. Regardless, the budget is at $110M, and people are blinking. (Hey, everyone, we’re not in the ’80s anymore.) A draft of the script came in about five weeks ago and by all accounts, it was well-received. With a sweeping epic — and budget — of this nature, the sides are at odds now as to how to move forward. This has been a passion project for Ellison for many years, and they are now reaching out to other studios to find a partner. The project was to be produced by Ellison, Jolie, Dana Goldberg and Jon Peters and also was going to reteam 11-time Oscar-

nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins with his Unbroken director Jolie. In the past, Skydance has been the muscle behind big-budget tentpoles including the Terminator reboot Terminator: Genisys, which is coming in July. It’s also working on the next Mission: Impossible pic, a second Jack Reacher movie and Star Trek 3.

Charleston, april 11 (ians): Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis beat Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan to reach the Family Circle Cup tennis tournament's semi-finals.

The No.1-seeded Hingis and Mirza battled Medina Garrigues and Shvedova for an hour and 41 minutes for a 7-5, 4-6, 13-11 victory here on Friday, fighting off a match point down 10-9 in the match tie-break and needing six match points of their own to edge the Spanish-Kazakhstani defending champions. "They played really well - they were defending champions here, so we knew we had to come out with our best tennis," Hingis said after the match. "They knew how to play against us. They served well and were good from the baseline. We really had to keep our energy up, be solid and come up with the shots when we needed to," she added.

Changwon (Ko rea), april 11 (ians): Commonwealth Games gold medallist Apurvi Chandela became the second Indian to qualify for the Rio Olympics after winning the bronze in the women’s 10 metre air rifle event at the ongoing Shooting World Cup (Rifle/Pistol) here on Saturday. Apurvi shot a total of 185.6 in the Finals, to finish behind Pejcic Snjezana of Croatia who won gold and Serbian Ivana Maksimovic, who won silver. Pejcic scored 209.1 to Ivana’s 207.7 to win the gold medal match-up. There were three Olympic quota places to be bagged in the event. "A World Cup medal was something that I have been aiming for a long time, and now that I have it, it really makes e very happy. What adds on to the happiness is winning the second quota place for my country for the Rio Olympics,” said an elated Apurvi after winning her medal.

"This win has helped me feel more confident towards my preparation for the Rio Olympics. I will work towards securing more podium finishes in the competitions I participate in this year," she said. Men’s pistol ace, Jitu Rai had won India’s first slot at the Shooting World Championships in Granada, Spain last year, when he won silver in the 50m Free Pistol event. new Delhi, april 11 (agenCies): Chennai Super Kings opener Brendon McCullum smashed the first century in the eighth edition of Indian Premier League paving way for a convincing 45run victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on Saturday. McCullum's knock enabled Chennai to post a formidable 209/4 as Hyderabad managed 164/6 in their 20 overs despite captain David Warner's 42ball 53. Hyderabad opener Shikhar Dhawan got to a start but fell after scoring 26 runs. None of the other Hyderabad batsmen got going as the efforts of the Chennai bowlers were backed up by some superb fielding. Hyderabad were never in the run-chase. David Warner was there for a long time, but could never really get doing. Their decision to hold Kane Williamson back till the very end back fired as he finished with 26 off 18 balls and he could have been a far bigger threat, had he come earlier in the innings. On a flat deck, the likes of Dwayne Bravo, Ashish Nehra and Mohit Sharma bowled a slew of slower de-

liveries to put the opposition under pressure. It was Mohit, who picked up two wickets with the new ball. Mohit showed his mettle with a back-of-the-hand slower one to completely bamboozle KL Rahul and castle him. Ravichandran Ashwin, with flight and

guile, was also impressive. Even Warner struggled to make an impact against a disciplined bowling attack. Earlier, opting to bat at the M A Chidambaram stadium, McCullum reached his century in the last ball of the innings, the belligerent knock consuming just 56

deliveries. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed 53 off 29 balls while briskly adding 63 runs for the third wicket with the New Zealander. McCullum had stands of 75 with his opening partner Dwayne Smith 60 with Suresh Raina, re-

spectively. Batting on 89 at the start of the final over, McCullum saw Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja being dismissed off successive balls before hitting a six and a four to reach 99. Off a full length delivery by Trent Boult, McCullum jabbed it to the covers for a single to bring up a welldeserved century. McCullum struck nine sixes and seven fours during his stay in the middle. Dhoni, who smashed Karn Sharma for three sixes in the 18th over, hit the maximum four times besides picking as many boundaries. The hosts had a good start and exploded in the death. McCullum was his usual self, often running down the track to unsettle the bowlers. Pace spearhead Dale Steyn missed out on the match and the others struggled with Ishant Sharma leaking 46 runs in three overs. While Super Kings didn't tinker with the XI that beat Delhi Daredevils narrowly on Thursday, Sunrisers Hyderabad's Kane Williamson and Trent Boult made IPL debuts, Ravi Bopara got a game ahead of Eoin Morgan, and Steyn missed out.

India stun world champions Australia in Azlan Shah Cup

ipoh (Malaysia), april 11 (pti): Young striker Nikkin Thimmaiah scored a hat-trick as India produced their best performance of the tournament to stun world champions and title holders Australia 4-2 and secure a place in the third and fourth place play-off at the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament. Already out of title race, India played without pressure and at last came up with a complete performance that had Australia on the backfoot for most part of the match. The win gave also gave India's new chief coach Paul van Ass his best moment of a short career with the Indian team. India scored a goal each in all the four quarters through VR Raghunath (1st minute), Nikkin (23rd, 32nd, 60th), while Australia's goals came from the sticks of Daniel Beale (14th) and Matt Gohdes (53rd). By virtue of this win, India finished their league engagements with seven points from five game and will now face either Korea or New Zealand in the third-fourth place classification match on Sunday. The Kookaburras strug-

gled for ball possession throughout the match and their defence crumbled when put under pressure by the Indian forwards. Barring the two soft goals which they conceded, there was no blemish in India's performance on Saturday. After four games, the Indians at last showed class and made a promising start to the match against a side which is way above in current world hockey. India were by far the better side on display in the entire 60 minutes as they dominated the proceedings against all expectations. The Indians were off to a great start as they went on the offensive from the word go and in the process earned two penalty corners in succession with the very first move of the match and Raghunath converted the second set piece with a booming flick to give the side an early lead. The Indians continued in the same vein and had another great chance in the 10th minute which was wasted by Satbir Singh who scooped over with only the approaching Australia goalkeeper Tristan Clemons to beat.
