KATHMANDU, APRIL 25 (AgENcIEs): A powerful earthquake struck Nepal Saturday, killing at least 1500 people across a swath of four countries as the violently shaking earth collapsed houses, leveled centuriesold temples and triggered avalanches on Mt. Everest. It was the worst tremor to hit the poor South Asian nation in over 80 years. According to IANS, Nepal’s Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat informed at least 1,570 people have died in the disaster. Citing the Nepal Army, he told reporters that 1,457 bodies have been recovered from various quake-hit sites while 1,055 people were injured. Another 34 were killed in India, 12 in Tibet and two in Bangladesh. Two Chinese citizens died in the NepalChina border. The death toll is almost certain to rise, said deputy Inspector General of Police Komal Singh Bam to the Associated Press. It was a few minutes before noon when the quake, with a preliminary

magnitude of 7.8, began to rumble across the densely populated Kathmandu Valley, rippling through the capital Kathmandu and spreading in all directions -- north toward the Himalayas and Tibet, south to the Indo-Gangetic plains, east toward the Brahmaputra delta of Bangladesh and west toward the historical city of Lahore in Pakistan. Shrish Vaidya, a businessman, was with his family in his two-story house on the outskirts of Kathmandu, when the quake struck. “It is hard to describe. The house was shaking like crazy. We ran out and it seemed like the road was heaving up and

down,” he told The Associated Press. “I don’t remember anything like this before. Even my parents can’t remember anything this bad.” A magnitude-6.6 aftershock hit about an hour later, and at least 16 aftershocks continued to jolt the region for hours. Residents ran out of homes and buildings in panic. Walls tumbled, trees swayed, power lines came crashing down and large cracks opened up on streets and walls. And clouds of dust began to swirl all around. “Our village has been almost wiped out. Most of the houses are either buried by landslide or damaged by

shaking,” said Vim Tamang, a resident of Manglung village near the epicenter. He said half of the village folks are either missing or dead. “All the villagers have gathered in the open area. We don’t know what to do. We are feeling helpless,” he said when contacted by the Associated Press. As night fell, thousands of scared residents continued to camp out in parks and compounds, too scared to return to their homes. Meteorologists forecast rain and thunderstorms for Saturday night and Sunday. The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 7.8. It said the

quake hit at 11:56 a.m. local time (0611 GMT) at Lamjung, about 80 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu. Its depth was only 11 kilometers, the largest shallow quake since the 8.2 temblor off the coast of Chile on April 1, 2014. The shallower the quake the more destructive power it carries. The sustained quake also was felt in India’s capital of New Delhi and several other Indian cities. The Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Sikkim, which share a border with Nepal, have reported building damage. There have also been reports of damage in the northeastern state of Assam.

Modi talks to Nepal PM, assures all help With massive earthquake hitting Nepal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to his counterpart Sushil Koirala as well as President Ram Baran Yadav and assured all help in dealing with the “tough” situation. “Spoke to PM Sushil Koirala, who is in transit in Bangkok on his way to Kathmandu. Assured all support & assistance during this tough time,” Modi tweeted. Modi, who is personally monitoring the situation at home as well as in Nepal, spoke to Yadav first as Koirala was abroad and not reachable. Later, Modi

talked to Koirala and assured him of “all assistance to deal with the situation arising due to the earthquake”, the PMO said. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson tweeted that an IAF c-130 Superhercules with NDRF relief team on board is airborne for Kathmandu and that more relief efforts were under way. The Ministry of Defence spokersperson tweeted that two C-17 Globemaster III of IAF are being loaded with medical supplies at Hindon and sent to Kathmandu.

A jawan of 19 Assam Rifles (AR) was killed in an ambush by unknown miscreants at Classic Point near Red Cross complex, Kohima on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as VS Rawat, a Rifleman.Hewasoneamong the foot patrolling team of the 19 AR walking towards PR Hill site when armed miscreants opened fire at them around 12:50 pm. “We heard around four shots. The incident occurred right in front of the vendors selling vegetables at the footpath near Classic point,” a witness told this correspondent. According to another eye witness, around four to

five persons fired at the AR patrolling team and fled towards Para Medical colony. Police recovered five 9mm caliber empty shells from the site of the incident. A hand grenade was also used by the assailants in the attack but it failed to explode. Police said that the unexploded grenade was of Chinese-make. The deceased jawan was rushed to Oking hospital but was declared brought dead. Police said they are investigating on the incident. This is the second such attack on the Assam Rifles by armed miscreants within a period of one month. On March 26, four jawans were injured when unidentified gunmen fired at them near IG stadium.

The Assam Rifles have been on high alert with intensified patrolling since the March 26 incident and the twin bomb-blast which occurred on April 16 and 17at Lerie colony. State police have not been able to make any headway on any of the shooting and bomb blast incidents which recently affected the situation in Kohima. Following Saturday’s firing, there is a heightened feeling of insecurity among the denizens as they feel the recent series of incidents witnessed at the capital indicates a catapulting of violence. Meanwhile, Home Minister Y Patton condemned the killing of Assam Rifles jawan and has

strongly urged the state police to nab the culprits responsible for the crime. “In spite of repeated appeals made by the general public to those who were hell-bent on creating nuisance and disturbances, these people showed no compunction for the human lives and their sole intention was now seen as to deliberately create fear psychosis in the minds of the people who have been living peacefully,” Patton said in a press statement. Patton also urged both the Government of India and the NSCN (K) to extend the ceasefire which expires on April 27 this month for the larger interest of the settlement of the long drawn out Naga political issue once and for all.

4 businEss Farmer suicides: Is moving from Bookings open for Ducati farms to factories the answer? Scrambler India’s launch Dimapur

Sunday

The Morung Express

26 April 2015

Amulya Ganguli IANS

The stir against land acquisition took a tragic and macabre turn when a farmer hanged himself during an Aam Admi Party (AAP) rally in the heart of the national capital. The mortifying episode only showed how the political exploitation of a complex problem was diverting attention from what really needed to be done. Arguably, the answer to farmers' suicides lies in boosting the agriculture sector through more irrigation facilities, provision of cheap credit and crop insurance, better marketing facilities after eliminating middle men and encouraging big retailers to step in, and making the availability of seeds and fertilizer much easier. Equally important are initiatives like weaning away the subsistence farmers from their lands which have ceased to be productive either through overuse or sub-divisions among successive generations of cultivators. It is only through industrialization that the pressure on such lands can be eased as the peasants move from farms to factories. A transition of this nature is the essence of development. But Indian politicians are wary of following this line lest it shows them to be anti-farmer and pro-industrialist. Such an image, they believe, will be detrimental to their political prospects be-

cause of the belief that the simple-minded toilers in the fields are the epitome of all virtues while the suitedand-booted businessmen are rapacious exploiters. Indeed, this romantic view of the countryside has been the stuff of Indian fiction and films for generations. Hence Rahul Gandhi's tirade against the capitalists and against the Narendra Modi government for being in cahoots with them - "suit-boot ki sarkar", as he called the government. Evidently, his sabbatical in a Buddhist monastery in Myanmar - if rumours are to be believed - has made even more of a Communist than the Communists themselves, for even the latter are not totally against private sector investments, including those from abroad. As the comrades have said, foreign investments are all right if they provide employment and bring in new technology. However, for the 44-year-old prince of the Congress dynasty, a strident assumption of the role of a champion of the underprivileged is the only way for the party to emerge from the hole in which it now finds itself. As a self-confessed admirer of his grandmother, Indira Gandhi, it is possible that Rahul Gandhi is harking back to her "garibi hatao" (remove poverty) pledge to breathe new life into the Congress. But what worked for Indira four-and-a-half de-

cades ago may not work at a time when socialism has collapsed worldwide - except in North Korea and the Indian comrades themselves are now one of the weakest forces on the political scene. To expect the "poor vs rich" gambit to succeed, therefore, is a shot in the dark, especially by someone who was born with the silver spoon in his mouth. There are other reasons why the ploy is unlikely to work. As even a loyalist of the dynasty, Digvijay Singh, has acknowledged, the economic reforms lifted millions out of lowly poverty levels to join the ranks of the lower middle class, or the "neo middle class", as Modi calls them. Moreover, these groups have acquired the mindset of the "aspirational" middle class, according to Digvijay Singh. As a result, they no longer care for subsidies but are eager to avail of the employment opportunities promised by Modi's emphasis on development. Since an essential feature of the anticipated development is the prime minister's ace "Make in India" plans, the government's eagerness to push through the amended land acquisition law is understandable. Unfortunately, the spate of farmers' suicides, and especially the one during the AAP rally, is likely to force the government to go slow. Yet, the essential correctness of the industrialization pro-

cess cannot be denied. Rahul Gandhi, therefore, can be said to be trying to turn the clock back by his antibusiness stance. In doing so, however, he is positioning himself against the Congress' own history considering that Jawaharlal Nehru favoured industrialization as his "dams are the temples of modern India" observation showed, and Rajiv Gandhi wanted to take the country into the 21st century. Rahul Gandhi's present emphasis on "socialism", therefore, is tantamount to swimming against the tide. He is also courting the danger of alienating the middle class - the "neos" and others - who evidently voted overwhelmingly a year ago for Modi's development agenda. While he is playing the "socialist" card even if the Congress may find it difficult to sustain his anti-industry stance, Modi is dogged by ill-luck as the havoc caused by unseasonal rains and the continuing suicides show. Notwithstanding his current troubles, however, he remains one of the few who has some idea of where he wants to take the country, whereas his opponents, of whom Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, are the leading lights, are seemingly motivated by stalling industrialization even if it scuppers the prospect of the Indian growth rate overtaking China's in the near future, as has been forecast.

added. Vian, however, did not give any details about specific timing for the launch of the next version of the product. "In Google, there are

some second thoughts on how to interpret version 3 (of the eyewear)," Vian told shareholders during the meeting. "What you saw was version 1. We are now working on version 2 which is in preparation." A Google spokeswoman said that "the team is heads down building the future of the product," but declined to comment on specifics. Google Glass was unveiled as a prototype in 2012. It was distributed to

a select group of people as part of Explorer programme who paid $1,500 to be early adopters. On January 19 this year, Google quietly suspended selling Google Glass to consumers while continuing to support Glass as an enterprise product. Later, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt announced that Glass has been put under the watch of Tony Fadell, head of Google's Nest connected home division, "to make it ready for users."

Services push must to create more jobs: Jaitley new delhi, april 25 (ianS): India has the means and the potential to become a global hub for services with competitive pricing, and become a major source of job creation for millions of youth in the country, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said here on Saturday. "This is our area of core strength. We have the abilities to provide services cheaper," the finance minister said at a two-day ex-

position on services at a sprawling Pragati Maidan fair ground in the capital. He said from education to healthcare and IT had the potential to generate huge number of jobs. "Human resource is India's biggest power," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his inaugural address at the Global Exhibition on Services (GES) adding was "brain drain", now there is the "yatra “from brain drain to 'brain gain'."

‘Careful’ management of demand vital for ‘Make in India’ Chandigarh, april 25 (pTi): Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan said on Friday that for the success of Make in India domestic demand needs to be managed “carefully” and industry should be made competitive, while stating that economic security is a must for national security. ‘Make in India’ initiative could also be an answer to increase opportunities in and around agriculture, he added. Asserting that RBI is a “perfectly autonomous institution”, he also hoped that the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) will soon give a time series for a better understanding of new series of national accounts (with 2011-12 as base year) which revised economic growth upwards. Speaking on a number of issues at a interactive session at Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, he said the Re-

serve Bank of India (RBI) would examine the issue of opening bank branches in Pakistan to facilitate bilateral trade. Referring to the Modi government’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ programme, he said: “We have to make it sure that there is enough demand. Certainly exports are important. World is growing slowly. Year after year it is not picking up. We have to focus on making industry competitive with rest of world and we have to carefully manage our domestic demand.” Sounding a note of caution earlier in December last year, Rajan had said that Make in India should not focus only on manufacturing. “I am…cautioning against picking a particular sector such as manufacturing for encouragement, simply because it has worked well for China. India is different, and developing at a different time, and we should be agnostic

about what will work,” he had said. Stressing on sustainable growth, Rajan said that national security could not be achieved unless there is an economic security. To a query, Rajan said that RBI was a perfectly working as autonomous institution. “I do not think there has been any move for privatization of public sector banks as yet. There has been no discussion on that issue. As far as autonomy of RBI goes, I think we are perfectly autonomous institution,” he said. Rajan further said besides targeting exports, efforts should also be taken on carefully managing domestic demand to fast pace growth. He also laid stress on improving infrastructure, changing business environment, providing entrepreneur-friendly atmosphere and creating more job potentials. On CSO estimates, RaDIMAPUR Civil Hospital:

jan that CSO would give the time series of estimates to make better understanding of its growth estimates. Earlier also Rajan had said that RBI needed to spend more time to understand the GDP numbers. On the basis of new series with 2011-12 as base year, the CSO had estimated the real GDP growth at 7.4 per cent in 2014-15 and 6.9 per cent in 2013-14. The Governor also said that major steps were being taken on fiscal front in terms of fiscal consolidation, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and transfer of direct subsidies to beneficiaries. He further said inflation needed to be under control while credit growth should be of high quality for achieving sustainable growth.“On monetary stability, we have to make sure inflation is under control. There is trust with value of rupee internally and externally, credit growth is of high quality,” he said.

LOCAL Sisterhood Network for marginalised women, girls

The Morung Express

Morung Express News Dimapur | April 25

“Action speaks louder than words” is a fitting tribute to this NGO which has helped tailor the marginalized and school drop-out women and girls into ‘women of substance,’ far from the media glare. Formed in 2001, Sisterhood Network (SN) is an organization solely committed to the welfare of marginalized and neglected women and girls in Nagaland. With its motto, “Helping One Another,” SN’s mission is to empower and facilitate women and girls to take up self-help initiatives through various activities and programs towards dignified and responsible living in society. In recognition of the humble and “genuine” initiative of the NGO to better the lots of women and girls, the Beauty and Aesthetic Society of Nagaland (BASN), which organizes the annual

Miss Nagaland beauty pageant, during its silver jubilee commemoration last year decided to support Sisterhood Network. On Saturday, the reigning Miss Nagaland, Veineinem Singson, and other members of BASN visited ‘Sisterhood Network’ office –cum-hostel located at Anchor Complex, Burma Camp, as a sign of solidarity and also to encourage the nine girls undergoing livelihood skills training programme (LSTG) at the centre. At a brief programme held to welcome the BASN team, director of Sisterhood Network, Alongla Aier, said the main goals of the network is to let the girls grow up in confidence, train them to be employable to become self-dependent and teach them how to lead responsible and happy lives. “Little drops of water make the mighty ocean, so we’ve heard. heads high, living dignified, full lives today. SN dreams to see the drops of water turn into an ocean, making waves of transformation in our broken society. To this end, SN remains drawn and committed,” Alongla said. “Share your everything, share your sorrows and joys…its then we learn to build a family of love”, the LSTG trainees sang to welcome the BASN team. In response, Miss Nagaland, Veineinem Singson, said every girl (woman) possesses three admirable qualities - kindness, endur-

ance and toughness. “When it comes to kindness, we do from our heart, we are beautiful inside,” Singson said. On endurance, she said despite numerous hurdles “We (women) don’t cease to overcome them.” First runner-up of Miss Nagaland 2013, Dr. Abeny also said the trainees are blessed in that they are all “handpicked and chosen by God.” Both the beauty queens encouraged the girls not to give in to circumstances but show the world what women are capable of. President BASN, Asenla Longkumer, who could not

make the visit this time in a message said the “idea of organizing Divas in aid of Sisterhood Network came about as we wanted to do an event exclusively for women and support an organization working genuinely for the cause of women.” Two LSTG inmates of the centre, Arenla and Majang, also shared their learning experiences. Presently, SN works through two offices in Dimapur and Kohima. SN engages in the following departments: • Livelihood Skills Train-

ing Program for girls: soft skills, hard skills • Women Initiatives through SHGs: trainings - food making, banking, bookkeeping; awareness seminars, health camps, small scale projects, etc • Entrepreneurship: craft & tailoring center; cafes; gift shop (run by SN trained staff) • Community Development: a recent initiative targeting several urban, semi-rural, and rural villages in and around Dimapur. Besides these main programs, SN continues to participate in: • Advocacy: Child Rights forums, Violence against women, Gender & legal rights of women • Volunteer work - Community free tuition for poor students. • Relief work • Networking with NGOs, groups and individuals • Awareness seminars.

Charity School Kohima organises cultural event Kohima, april 25 (mExN): In an attempt to promote and educate the importance of cultural values and traditions, Charity School Kohima organized a cultural event on Friday under the theme "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots." The programme was marked by cultural songs and dances presented by the students representing the various tribes of the Nagas. The one-day event received a positive response as the students, all dressed in their traditional attires, actively took part. The cultural event, held at the school premises, was boosted by the presence of Rev. Sr. Anna Molly, principal, Little

Flower Higher Secondary School, who graced the function as chief guest. In her address, Sr Anna Molly lauded the school authority for taking the initiative to come up with such programme, which, she said, will go a long way in instilling in students the values and importance of the rich cultural heritage of the Nagas. “At a time when our culture is vanishing and the young generation is after the modern fashion, a programme like this is laudable,” she said. Stating that our culture is our identity, she underlined the need to respect one’s own culture. She suggested that similar programmes should be conducted so that the students at a tender age will be able to pick up the values and traditions practiced by our forefathers.

Rev. Ajangto Aonok: The walking — talking encyclopedia

O

n 1st October, 1901, Mr. Ajangto Aonok, one of the most illustrious sons of Changki was born. Since childhood, he was a man of upright value and a brilliant learner. As a child his father taught him alphabet, numeric, bible verses, and gospel songs at home. He was also fortunate to be with the company of his maternal grandmother who was well versed in Ao folklores. Under her tutelage he became one of the best known cultural historian of his generation. His proximity to her makes a deep impact on his life which becomes handy in his later years as a research historian. He began his formal education in the village school and completed the lower primary course in three years time. Then he came to Impur to study at the Mission Training School. It was the only Middle School in the present day Nagaland state. He passed Class VI in First Division excelling all students in 1921. The said academic distinction earned him the most coveted award, a weeklong trip to Calcutta City sponsored by the missionary. After graduating himself in flying colours from lmpur Mission Training School he studied in Jorhat Christian High School and passed Class VIII and much

later matriculated from Calcutta University in 1943. Between the year 1927 — 1970, he was awarded as many as ten proficiency certificate in theological studies from renowned institution in India and abroad and thereby acquired vast knowledge in Biblical and theological doctrine. Late Rev. Ajangto Aonok was known for his multifaceted personality. He was a brilliant scholar, a reputed Bible instructor, a talented song composer, a dedicated choir master, an ideal school teacher and an iconic cultural historian, he knew the detailed genealogy of his ancestors spreading over nine generations. It is said that he was one of the most garrulous man of his time and enjoyed the pleasure of story telling in his leisure. He was a raconteur par excellence. During the Second World War the imperial British Govt. requested him to join war service and as a loyal British subject accepted the offer with humility and rendered exemplary service to the best of his ability. True to his conviction he had overcome various temptation of war spoils. After the war he came back to his native village and served as pastors for 13 long years with great honour. The Ao Baptist Churches Association ordained him on 27th

July, 1968 in recognition of his rendering meritorious ecclesiastical service to the church. Among the distinguished persons of his time, he was the most gifted and versatile personality. In erudition he had no equal. He was a walking — talking encyclopedia. Late Ajangto Aonok took active part in the activities of the Ao Students Conference from its inception. In 1931, he was the Secretary and became president in 1940. In 1938-39, the annual general conference of the ASC was held in the historic Molungyimsen Village. One of the important agenda discussed in the meeting was the contentious issue of origin of the Aos. A research committee was constituted to conduct an in-depth research with regard to the origin of the Aos. The committee members were asked to submit and publish their findings along with appropriate suggestions. Mr. Ajungto was nominated as one of the member of the committee. With the overwhelming mandate of the apex student's body, he began his work in earnest with great deal of enthusiasm and submitted his thesis paper in record two months time. His work was published in the March edition of Ao Milen in 1939. At that point of time people generally believe in the

mythical story that the progenitor of the Aos were created from stones found in Chungliyimti, a sacred and widely held belief which was passed on to the people through oral transmission from the ancestors. But Mr. Ajangto was sceptical and inclined to differ with the prevailing belief and notion for various reasons and propounded his own theory. He firmly believe that the Aos in the course of their migration probably traversed various mountainous regions including the Himalayas, the Tibetan plateau, China, Burma and Patkai Hills, till they arrive and occupied the present settlement. The fall out of his writings was disastrous. There were angry reaction from the exponent and believer of Chungliyimti school of thought. The enlightened section of the people was however on his side. Acceptance and disapproval was mixed. At the end of the day it was quite apparent that the writings of the researcher has kindled the flames of new idea and modern thought at a time where superstitious belief were the order of the day due to ignorance and illiteracy. His detractors were highly agitated with the turn of events. They cried foul and filed a lawsuit against him in the court of Dobashi at Mokokchung. The case was

heard on 5th — 6th Apri1,1939. His opponent and the Dobashi hatched a conspiracy to malign and punish him. At the time of the trial he was not given opportunity to put forth his point of argument in his defence. He was mocked and ridiculed by his opponent in the most condemnatory manner. The Dobashi far from being neutral sided with the accuser which was most unbecoming of person holding judicial office. The Dobashi were the Judge, the Prosecutor all in one body. To rub salt to the injury his colleagues in the research wing and the official of ASC who were present in the court premise maintain stoic silence for reason best known to them. Meanwhile the hon'ble court pronounced the verdict and found Mr. Ajangto Aonok guilty of sacrilege. He was convicted and sentenced with fine of Rs. 50/- only, an astonishing sum at that relevant point of time. Thus the career of a budding and bright young research historian came to an ignoble end for no fault of his own but due to miscarriage of justice. The judgment was a classic example of Latin Maxim : Ignoratia Judices est calamitas innocentis meaning "ignorance of a judge is the misfortune of innocent". The judgment came like a bolt out of the blue. He was flabber-

gasted. One could not help but can only imagine his inner turmoil. At the time of handing over the fine he had the moral courage and temerity to say in the open court that I'll take back the money along with interest when I'm absolve from the charges in future. This was, perhaps, one rare act of fearless defiatce by a convict in the annals of Judicial proceedings. An unprecedented judicial history was enacted in the hon'ble court of Dobashi at Mokokchung. In recent time many scholars and authors of repute has written beautiful treatise and discourse on the cultural history of the Aos. They dealt at length on the issue of origin and migration and in the absence of any written records of the migration of people to the place now called the Ao Naga region they propounded their own theory and there seemed to be unanimity of opinion amongst the writers in as much as they traced the origin and migration of Aos to present day Myanmar region. It is quite obvious that their assertions were never contradicted and challenged by any one and from any quarter whatsoever. Hence one can conveniently draw an inference that the writings of the present day scholars has social and academic acceptance. In the same vein one should also

acknowledge and accept the work of Mr. Ajangto, as a young and budding historian he was the first scholar to trace the origin of the Aos to Myanmar region far beyond the geographical confines of Chungliyimti. But sadly and regretfully his views were discarded and get rid of by the contemporary Ao society. He was persecuted and punished. He had suffered irreparable loss and injury both in terms of money and honour. Therefore, it is in the fitness of thing that all right thinking people should acknowledge his role as a pioneer historian and accord him social and academic recognition befit of a man of his calibre and stature and to ensure facilitation of the honour one should not only be broad minded but must also keep in check their egos. Mr. Ajangto Aonok passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on 26th April, 1979 aged 78. He left behind a rich legacy not in terms of money and properties but in terms of selfless service to the humanity and for the glory of God's own Kingdom. On the eve of the occasion of 36th death anniversary of late Rev. Ajanato Aonok, I and my family pay our respectful homage to the great son of the soil. Michael Chabon’s Iconic songs that helped pop songwriting tips changed the world T

David Butow he celebrated novelist opens up about his move to music, penning several songs on Mark Ronson’s new album Uptown Special and annotating tunes on Genius. Just days after Kendrick Lamar released his newest song, “The Blacker The Berry,” Michael Chabon had annotated it on Genius—the lyric annotation site formerly known as Rap Genius. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier and Clay is no stranger to pop music or pop culture: after all, his opus was featured frequently in The OC, and he co-wrote the stellar screenplay to Spider-Man 2. But Chabon’s 2015 has been especially musical: the audiophile and writer has just earned his first professional songwriting credits as the co-writer of all but two songs on Uptown Special, Mark Ronson’s new album. While you may know of it by its smash single, “Uptown Funk” (not a Chabon original), the album features a suite of sunset-marinated tracks heavy with Americana, introspection and noir imagery by one of North America’s finest living novelists. Genius, meanwhile, has undergone a rebranding process in the wake of last year’s scandal wherein they allowed users to annotate Isla Vista shooter Elliot Rodgers’s 140-page misogynistic manifesto. Genius co-founder Mahbod Moghadam was forced to resign after praising the mass murderer’s prose as “beautifully written.” So in January, Genius lured New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones away from one of the most esteemed gigs in music criticism to become its editor. “It’s giving lyrics a safe place to live, raising the standards for all the annotations, bringing in different layers of meaning,” Frere-Jones explained to Newsweek. “At the end of the day, we’re just trying to put in one very user-friendly place a whole bunch of different voices that really, really bring out what’s going on in a song or a book or a fact.” It seemed only natural to ask the man behind the words how he went about crafting some beautiful funk jams. Chabon opened up over the phone about some of the ways he moved from the man of metaphor to the invisible lyricist and how he was haunted by the spirit of Stephen Sondheim.

hat does it take for a song to inspire the world? It turns out when people come together to fight for a cause they believe in, change can happen. The ONE’s agit8 campaign has brought together tons of amazing artists to relive some of the greatest protest songs that have shaped history as we know it. From Bob Marley’s final “Redemption Song” reflecting on historical and modern-day slavery to Bob Dylan calling out the military-industrial complex growing under Eisenhower, these songs stirred popular conversation that eventually sparked revolutions. U2 – Sunday Bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday, sometimes called the Bogside Massacre, was an incident that occurred in Northern Ireland in 1972 where 26 unarmed civil rights protesters were shot by the British Army. The famous U2 song offers a militaristic drumbeat to emphasize the somber content of the song. Larry Mullen, Jr., U2’s drummer, has said that the hit is really less about the event itself and more about the need to step up our collective effort to combat violence and hatred all over the world. What will it take to stop all the unnecessary violence? “How long, how long must we sing this song?” U2 sings. Bob Marley – Redemption Song When it comes to positive vibrations, few have made things shake more than Bob Marley. The final song released by the king of reggae, “Redemption Song” sings to historic and modern day slavery as well as our struggle with physical and psychological freedom. The song stands out from most of Marley’s other work because it’s a solo acoustic track. In the song, Marley quotes activist Marcus Garvey, singing, “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our mind.” Above is the Wayna acoustic cover of the song for the ONE agit8 campaign. To complement “Redemption Song,” here is an amazing recording from his final concert in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA of all places. You may have heard this version before – it’s so magical it’s also the last song on Marley’s & The Wailers Legend greatest hits album. Bob Dylan – Masters of War This Bob Dylan song is a critique of the Cold War-era arms buildup that occurred in the early 1960’s. Dylan was “speaking against what Eisenhower was calling a military-industrial complex as he was making his exit from the presidency.” Creedence Clearwater Revival: Fortunate Son This song is said to be inspired by the joining together of two political families when David Eisenhower, grandson of President Dwight Eisenhower,

and Julie Nixon, daughter of President Richard Nixon, married. Writer John Fogerty told Rolling Stones he “had the feeling that none of these people were going to be involved with the war. In 1968, the majority of the country thought morale was great among the troops, and eighty percent of them were in favor of the war. But to some of us who were watching closely, we just knew we were headed for trouble.” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Mary Lambert – Same Love This recent hit came out of Macklemore’s own frustrations with popular culture’s animosity to-

ward same-sex marriage and was recorded during the campaign for Washington’s Referendum 74, which legalized same-sex marriage in Washington State in 2012. “Same Love” gained mainstream popularity when the Supreme Court struck down DOMA in support of the rights of married same-sex couples. Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the Name This Rage Against the Machine cover, performed for ONE by Biffy Clyro, speaks out against institutional racism and police brutality in U.S. society. “They use force to make you do what the deciders, have decided you must do.”

Taylor Swift shares her ‘Quirky’ songwriting process for ‘storytellers’

W

Kara Warner MTV

hen the news broke that Taylor Swift would be featured on an upcoming episode of VH1’s “Storytellers,” it seemed like a no-brainer. Swift’s leave-it-all-onstage style as a performer is a perfect fit for the shows up-close-and-personal feel. And judging by the reaction to the taping of her episode this week, which took place in front of 2,500 fans/students at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, Swift’s storytelling is as engaging as her live performances. Although a lot of Swift’s emotions and experiences come through in her songwriting, she was just as excited to

tell them in full to a captive audience. “I’m excited about telling the beginnings of stories, like the story of this song called ’Ours,’ where I wrote it about this guy nobody thought I should be with,” Swift told VH1 News just before the taping. “So I wrote this song specifically just to play it for him, just to show him, ’I don’t care what anyone says. I don’t care that you have tattoos. I don’t care that you have a gap between your teeth. I love you for who you are.’ And that song ended up actually making it on a record [Speak Now] and becoming a #1 song. And then you take me being mad at my parents because they didn’t want me to date this dude when I was 17, and I threw a fit and ran to my room and wrote a song on my bedroom floor

called ’Love Story.’ So that turned into something that I never expected to be our first #1 worldwide hit. “Songs happen in really weird, strange, quirky ways, and to explore the start of them, where they were first brought into the world, where you first got that first little idea, it’s wonderful to get to share that with a crowd of 3,000 people,” Swift added. And those few thousand people thought Swift was wonderful, according to VH1 News’ Kate Spencer, who was lucky enough to be present for the taping. “It was very sweet,” Spencer told MTV News. “These students won a contest to bring her to Harvey Mudd, which is an engineering and science school full of really smart, scholarly students. They were really proud of

bringing her to the school,” she explained. “There was a real appreciative vibe, and she was aware of that. And the students … were genuinely into it. When I was in college, if there had been a concert, people would have partied beforehand. These students were there to listen to her music, and she really responded to it.” Spencer said one of the performance highlights was the debut single from Swift’s upcoming album, Red, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Swift politely request that the crowd sing on the chorus. “At the end, she explained that she had a nerdy daydream that everyone would sing the ’we-eee’ part of the song with her,” Spencer said. “It was really cute. Everyone got really into it.”

Makin’ Stuff Up: Writing under the influence Rand Bishop american songwriter

I

’m no fuddy duddy. I like to party. I’ll even confess to having penned a song (or ten) extolling my native affinity for getting a buzz on. I also pride myself on my aversion to nostalgia. Ain’t never gonna hear this guy pining for a long-ago day “when country was country.” Even so, I fear I’m about to sound like the grizzly ol’ curmudgeon next door, spraying his garden hose and cackling, “Get off my lawn, you no-good hoodlums!” Let’s travel back three decades, to when the original staff of this vaunted publication was readying its virgin edition. Country Countdown’s chart of that year’s top-100 hits included one – I repeat, ONE – lone drinking song. Appropriately, “Tennessee Whiskey,” which ended 1984 at #48, was performed by none other than bourbon’s BFF, George Jones. Ironically, however, in “Tennessee Whiskey,” the liquid in the bottle wasn’t what got the Possum high. The hooch was a simile for that one special woman, who kept the singer “… stoned on your love all the time.” Compare that poetic lyrical concept with Florida Georgia Line’s recent “This Is How We Roll” and my point should become instantly clear. In FGL’s smashed anthem, the booze flows with no potential consequence and no other purpose or justification than to lubricate pointless debauchery. The composition amounts to a vapid chant:

“We’re young, loose, stupid, and we don’t give two shits about the future!” From country’s inception, alcohol has been one of its most constant themes. However, as my buddy Jamie Ferrugia pointed out in a recent email, “… in those old songs, drinking was just a symptom of a deeper issue; in today’s country it’s an end in itself.” In “those old songs,” the bottle was there to obliterate a memory, to ease a pain, not to get a young lady’s panties off. Alcohol was the once-soothing potion that eventually backfired, took control, and destroyed careers and marriages. Booze played the “devil on my shoulder,” who disguised himself as the empathetic friend, then ceased coming to the rescue, leaving the singer wailing, “The whiskey ain’t workin’ anymore.” At the very least, getting loaded came in the guise of a “Family Tradition.” Or it was an integral part of a rite of passage. “Chug-alug. Makes ya wanna holler hi-dee-ho!” Drinking songs described dysfunctional relationships. “Don’t come home a’drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind.” Or, they were warnings about how alcohol can turn a sweet spirit bitter. “Don’t ask her on a straight-tequila night.” At their best, they were desperate prayers from helpless, selfdestructive retches. “Could you help me turn the wine back into water?” Thankfully, this great tradition has not died off altogether. Like Garth Brooks’ party-hardy “Friends In Low Places,” Toby Keith’s rowdy “I Love This Bar” isn’t about getting hammered so much as the instant camaraderie of dive-bar subculture. The vulnerable drunk-dialer in Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” longs to recapture lost love – as does hapless Eli Young Band in “Drunk Last Night.” Danielle Bradbery explains, “When he didn’t come home, she had the gin to thank.” When Gary Allan confesses, “It ain’t the whiskey that’s killin’ me,” he comes the closest to a country drinkin’ classic since “Whiskey Lullaby” by Brad Paisley, who more recently recalled the sharp, barbed wit of Roger Miller with, “You had some of the best times you’ll never remember with me,

Alcohol.” So true. So smart. So funny. But let’s face it. Too many of the latest chart toppers are simply trite and unimaginative. Today’s country dude admires the girl, not for her beauty, tender heart, patience, or generous nature, but for her tight jeans, her ability to hold her liquor, shake her badonkadonk, and party all night. Every video kicks off with a young, fuzzyfaced stud in a ball cap driving a gas-guzzling V8, then cuts to tables covered in beer, whiskey, and tequila bottles. By song’s end, our stud’s tatted arms are draped in scantily clad, obviously willing females. Not only do the records sound like they were produced in L.A. in the mid-’80s, the statements they make are no more substantial than Mötley Crüe or Quiet Riot. The bottle never seems to let these guys down. They’re out to get wrecked, apparently unconcerned about leaving a shred of wreckage behind. This new breed of performer panders to a minimum tribal IQ and blatantly exploits the most shallow, narcissistic propensities of its youthful fans. CMA Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan opens “That’s My Kind-a Night” with, “I got that real-good, feel-good stuff under the seat of my big black, jacked-up truck.” Gee! What do you suppose he means by that? Jerrod Neiman’s “Drink To That All Night” is an unabashedly misogynistic paean to the glories of recreational inebriation –with tuner-effected vocals, to a disco beat, for Haggard’s sake! In Brantley Gilbert’s “Bottoms Up,” the chorus has one actual rhyming word – “cup” – then employs “up” to rhyme with itself four consecutive times. Not only do these odes to hedonism shout dubious messages, the tunesmithing craft is often lazy, and sometimes nearly non-existent. And labels, performers, producers, managers, promoters, merch peddlers, songwriters, and publishers are profiting by marketing this pervasive nonsense. How do they sleep at night? On very comfortable, very expensive mattresses, I suppose – hopefully, with a barf bucket within reach.

1. It helps if you really love music Chabon has been a life-long music lover, or, he says, an “amateur scholar of music.” In particular, he has always loved lyrics, and has incredibly strong memories of their power even as an infant. “I can’t have been older than three years old and my mother had taken me to a doctor’s appointment downtown. It was the first time I was aware of what downtown was and in the doctor’s office ‘Downtown’ by Petula Clark was playing. It was guessing at the reality of my life in a magical way.” In his senior year at the University of Pittsburgh, Chabon was lead singer of a band called The Bats (not, he noted, to be confused with the Australian band of considerably more fame) and wrote lyrics for them. And their EP resurfaced on Mind Cure records at the end of last year and is now available for a listen if this album isn’t enough for you. 2. Have the right people around you For a music addict like Chabon, the chance to be involved in an album of musicians like Uptown Special was a dream come true: the chance to have Stevie Wonder or Carlos Alomar, the guitarist who’s best known for working with Bowie, on the same album he penned lyrics for. These amazing groups of talented musicans, new and seasoned, wouldn’t have happened for just any producer, Chabon argues. “I’ve seen comments about how well-connected Ronson is. It’s completely wrong. One of Mark’s gifts is to inspire people to work with people they’d never have an opportunity to work with.” The celebrated novelist opens up about his move to music, penning several songs on Mark Ronson’s new album Uptown Special and annotating tunes on Genius. Find the right music you need to inspire you When Chabon began working on the album, he spent a lot of time listening to great wordsmiths of the past: Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, artists that sought to bring the words to the fore. But he ended up finding a more unusual inspiration: Hall & Oates. “It’s not what you hear when the record is on but the verve and the simplicity of the lyrics!” said Chabon. He also listened to a lot of modern pop music: easy when you have a 13-year-old daughter to guide you in, he said.

Good lyrics are inconspicuous lyrics The album has received a huge amount of critical praise, but Chabon has not felt much of the praise has been aimed at him: but he couldn’t be more fine with that. “It’s a weird thing to say, ‘your lyrics are so good,’” he laughed. “The best lyrics are the ones not noticed,” he said, “unless it’s like Elvis Costello.” Songwriting is a puzzle to solve Songwriting for yourself, Chabon pointed out, is a very different beast than songwriting for others. “There has to be an efficiency as well as rhyme and cadence,” he said. You have to consider what another person can say rather than your own capacity. But the logician in Chabon really enjoyed the pragmatism of writing lyrics. “Writing has always been to me to a certain degree about problem solving. In screenwriting it’s really rigid, you know, you have a page and a half to do something and you have to do it visually,” he said, but found songwriting even more pleasurable to master. “The puzzle-solving element was the most pleasurable. Trying 27 combinations and then you solve the combination lock—it was the most satisfying thing.”

Rhyme can be your friend, but don’t let it rule you In the journey to lyric-writing, Chabon returned to Broadway lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim’s two books on song writing: Finishing the Hat and Look I Made a Hat. In these books rhyme is stated as important because the audience trust you, and the lyrics, to use full rhyme. He also, Chabon noted, spoke about how lyrics must be consumed in real time—there is no room to sit and digest the words on the page. Understandably, Sondheim’s manifesto was a daunting read. “I came in with this Sondheim figure berating me,” said Chabon, “and it was the first thing [album co-producer Jeff] Bhasker took out of my quiver and snapped over his knee.” What works in musical theatre, he learned, is not necessarily the right thing for a pop song. “Too many perfect rhymes sounds goofy.”

Some words are meant to be used together Throughout Uptown Special, Chabon uses a mixture of brand new imagery (a drug called ‘Daffodil’ he invented is the crux of the eponymous song) or uses slightly more obscure or abstract images that he has helpfully also annotated on Genius. But Chabon, king of the metaphor, also returns to images that music has always loved: in “Summer Breaking” he alludes to both Delilah cutting Samson’s hair, and a woman being “like a diamond.” Sometimes, Chabon said, the oldies really are the goodies when it comes to building up the images in song lyrics. “There are just certain words in English that sing really well. Like fire and desire,” explained Chabon. “And you can’t resist it, whatever accent you have, they sing well. Springsteen sang it and The Pointer Sisters sang it. It’s better to let the song do what it needs to do than to be too cute about it.”

Don’t force the big ideas—leave it to the audience At first, Chabon wanted to do something with a real narrative arc: although the songs are geographically disparate, he imagined a story running through it. “I was four years old when Sgt. Pepper came out, and Quadrophenia, and the heyday of the concept album,” Chabon said. “In my mind it all made a story. A love story.” But he was also aware that there were pitfalls to the narrative structure of Quadrophenia: sometimes songs that worked in context didn’t stand up on their own. So although Ronson was supportive of potentially doing it, it wasn’t a necessity for either of them. “It was a structure that was all in place and if Mark threw the switch it would have lit up, but it didn’t need to be there,” said Chabon. “It imposes meaning and its better when audiences can impose meaning his or herself. That’s what makes an album last.”

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

Let the little How to read the Bible for yourself children come to me John Piper

usually clarify the specific meaning the author intended them to have.

1. Read for the author’s meaning, not your own When we read, we want to know what an author intended us to see and experience in his writing. He had an intention when he wrote. Nothing will ever change that. It is there as a past, objective event in history. We are not reading simply for subjective experiences. We are reading to discover more about objective reality. I’m not content with what comes to my mind when I read it. The meaning of a sentence, or a word, or a letter is what the author intended for us to understand by it. Therefore, meaning is the first aim of all good reading.

Ask about connections with other parts in the Bible We have to ask how the meaning we’re seeing in a passage fits together with other passages. Are there confirmations elsewhere in the Bible? Are there passages that seem contradictory or inconsistent? When I feel tension between two verses or passages, I never assume the Bible is inconsistent. I assume I’m not seeing all I need to see. If I have not seen enough to explain the apparent inconsistency, asking more questions will likely help me see more. Few things make us deeper and richer in our knowledge of God and his ways than this habit of asking how texts cohere in reality when at first they don’t look like they do.

2. Ask questions to unlock the riches of the Bible When we read, we do not generally really think until we are faced with a problem to be solved, a mystery to be unraveled or a puzzle to be deciphered. Until our minds are challenged, and shift from passive reading to active reading, we drift right over lots of insights. Asking ourselves questions is a way of creating a problem or a mystery to be solved. That means the habit of asking ourselves questions awakens and sustains our thinking. It stimulates our mind while we read, and drives us down deep to the real meaning of a passage.

Ask about application The aim of biblical writers is not only that we “know,” but that we “be” and “do.” So we need to form the habit of asking questions concerning application. To us. To our church and our relationships. To the world. The task of application is never done. There are millions of ways a text can be applied, and millions of situations and relationships for them to be applied. Our job is not to know every application, but to grow in applying the meaning of Scripture to our lives.

Ask about words Ask about definitions. What does this word mean in this specific sentence? And remember, we’re asking what the author intended by the word, not what we think it means. This assumes words will have different meanings in different sentences. Ask about phrases A phrase is a group of words without a verb that describe some action or person or thing. For instance, “Put sin to death by the Spirit.” “By the Spirit” describes the activity. It tells us how we kill sin in our lives. Look closely at phrases like these and ask what specifically they’re explaining. Ask about relationships between propositions A proposition is a group of words with a subject and a verb. How propositions relate to each other is one of the most important questions we can ask. Often, there will be a small connecting word that holds the answer (e.g., but, if, and, therefore, in order that, because, etc.). Sometimes the ma-

T

he Bible glorifies humans alone are created in the image of God. On the last day of creation, God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). Thus, He finished His work with a “personal touch.” God formed man from dust and gave him life by sharing His own breath (Genesis 2:7). Accordingly, man is unique among all God’s creations, having both a material body and an immaterial soul/spirit. However, some extremists such as, the Evolutionists and the Mormons try to defy this truth into their own rational interpretations. According to Rich Dean, the Mormons have equated the image of God as being the physical characteristics of our bodies that make up the way we look. In fact, the Mormons have taken this interpretation to extreme by saying that God is just an exalted man, who has “a body of flesh and bones.” Unless God were a hermaphrodite (having both male and female sexual organs) this phrase could not refer to just physical characteristics. Evolutionary biology proposes that humans evolved from ape-like ancestors. If this is true then we are nothing more than glorified apes. However, compared to our closest “relatives,” scientific research indicates that humans are

jor differences between whole theologies hang on these connections. Ask how the context helps define the meaning of words and phrases You can’t know accurately what a proposition means until you know the meaning of the words, and you can’t know the meaning of words until you know the meaning of the proposition. It is a circle, but it’s not a hopeless circle. Words have a limited range of shared meanings. Wrong guesses about a word’s meaning are often set right by the end of the sentence or paragraph. Even though words, in and of themselves, can have several meanings, the content and relationships of the propositions around them

Ask about affections—appropriate responses of the heart The aim of our Bible reading is not just the response of the mind, but of the heart. The whole range of human emotions are possible responses to the meaning of the Bible. God gave us the Bible not just to inform our minds, but also to transform our hearts—our affections. God’s word is honored not just by being understood rightly, but also by being felt rightly.

Selie Visa Customary practice: It was the custom in those days for mothers to present their children in the synagogues at about the age of a year, or in the remoter places to ask a blessing from any rabbi who happened to be passing through their village. Jesus, of course, was recognised by the common people as a notable rabbi and naturally parents were eager for His special blessing. Blessing the children: As Jesus journeyed along toward Jericho there were brought to Him little children for Him to place his hands on them and pray for them. The disciples, however, felt it was their duty to protect Jesus from these continual delays and so they rebuked the parents, and bade them not to trouble Him.Perhaps they wanted to Selie Visa protect his privacy and shield him from needless interruptions. Though their motives may have been commendable, they again showed lack of spiritual sensitivity. Although children in Judaism of the time were deeply cherished, they were thought in some ways to be negligible members of society: their place was to learn, to be respectful, and to listen. Jesus was much displeased by the unkindness of the disciples and said reprovingly, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Jesus took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them… a striking act showing his love for them. This was the overflowing of Jesus’ divine love for children.

3. At every page, pray and ask for God’s help Messianic prophecy fulfilled: O Lord, incline our hearts to your word. Give us By this act Jesus fulfilled yet another Messianic prophecy dea desire for it. Open our eyes to see wonders there. clared of Him by Isaiah. Subdue our wills and give us an obedient spirit. unique on many fronts, including creativity, personality, abstract thinking and moral judgment. Besides the obvious differences, the Bible in Genesis 1 confirms about body, soul and spirit. The soul is best described as characteristics that make up the advanced brain, including mind, will and emotion. The spirit is that part of humans that is able to love and experience God directly. Having the “image” or “likeness” of God means, in the simplest terms, that we were made to resemble God and sets man apart from the animal world, fits him for the dominion God intended him to have over the earth, and enables him to commence with his Maker. It is a likeness mentally, morally and socially – Humanity. Mentally, human was created as a rational, volitional agent – can reason and can choose. This is a reflection of God’s intellect and freedom. Morally, human was created in righteousness and perfect innocence, a reflection of God’s holiness. Our conscience or “moral

(Matthew 19:13-15; Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-17)

compass” is an evidence of that original state. Socially, human was created for fellowship. This reflects God’s triune nature and His love. A closer look on Genesis 1:26ff will give a larger view on humanity. When we are being created with such specialty; a little lower than the angels, making us rulers over the works of His hands, putting everything under our feet (Psalm 8:4ff ), then surely there is a purpose behind humanity. The Bible makes it abundantly clear that God created man and that He created him for His glory (Isaiah 43:7). Therefore, the ultimate purpose of man is simply to glorify God. What does it look like to glorify God? In Psalm 100, we are told to worship God with gladness, acknowledge who God is and praise and worship Him as such. We fulfill our purpose of glorifying God also by living our lives in relationship and faithful service to Him (1 Samuel 12:24 and John 17:4). Since God created man in His image (Genesis 1:27), man’s purpose cannot be

fulfilled apart from Him. King Solomon tried living for his own pleasure, yet at the end of his life he concluded that the only worthwhile life is one of honor and obedience to God (Ecclesiastes 12:13ff). Today, we still bear the image of God (James 3:9) but we also bear the scars of sin. With the fall of the human race into sin, the image of God in humanity was seriously flawed, but not totally destroyed. In spite of a bend toward evil, aspects of God’s likeness remain in humankind, glimpsed in such characteristics as creativity, generosity, and compassion. Nevertheless, it is only by God’s grace that people can respond to God’s gift of salvation. In our fallen state, sin separates us from God and makes it impossible to glorify Him on our own. But through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, our relationship with God is reconciled – our sin is forgiven and no longer creates a barrier between God and us (Romans 3:23-24). The more we get to know our Creator and the more we love Him (Matthew 22:37ff), the better we understand who we are and what our purpose is. We were created to bring Him glory. God has unique plans and purposes for each person (Jeremiah 29:11), but we can know that, whatever those plans look like, they will ultimately result in His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Some profound lessons: As Jesus blessed the children, He pointed out some of the profound lessons to be learned. By stopping to talk with the parents and drew their little ones into His embrace He showed that the young are as precious in His sight as those of mature years. His reproof to the disciples is a standing rebuke to the church that fails to realise the paramount importance of the children in its midst. It was to emphasise the place of children in the family of God that just before His ascension Jesus instructed Peter not only to “feed His sheep” but also to “feed His lambs.” In the home, the school, and the church it is the solemn responsibility of the followers of the Great Teacher to assure their little ones of God’s tender love for them. Tragic indeed will be the judgment which will fall upon those who hinder the coming of the children to the waiting arms of God. Though He may no longer walk among us as He did in the long ago, He is still as ready to receive the children who are brought by godly parents for His blessings. Be like a little child: Jesus taught His disciples another profound and beautiful lesson when He said to them “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Jesus wanted children to come to him and not to be hindered in their coming. After all, children in their receptivity and dependence exemplify the characteristics of those who possess God’s kingdom. Jesus’ words about little children provide the attitude essential for receiving God’s grace. It is not age per se that is in view but childlike qualities such as trust, openness, and the absence of holier-than-thou attitudes. Jesus had compassion even on infants too young to understand the difference between right and wrong. In recent years we have begun to understand formally the importance of communication through touching and not only through talking. The kingdom of God is to be received as a little child receives something, that is, without self-consciousness and in dependence on the giver. The kingdom is both a gift to be received and a realm to enter.

ady Antebellum opened up to ET about their scary tour bus fire on Thursday, when a bus transporting Hillary Scott, her husband, and her tour manager caught fire while on their way to Dallas, Tex., for the Academy of Country Music Awards. An emotional Hillary shared that among other personal items, the dress she was supposed to wear to Sunday's ACM Awards was actually lost in the fire. "It actually was burned up and we got a replacement which is amazing, and I'm really excited about it," she told ET on Friday, looking on the bright side of things. But one thing that miraculously didn't burn up was her Bible. "Everything back there -- my toiletries, my iPad, a lot of things including a lot of our clothes that we were supposed to wear this weekend -- were ashes, disintegrated," she said. "And for whatever reason -- I firmly believe that God is an amazing God -- the Bible was intact and not a page was missing. I can't really talk about it without crying." Hillary also Instagrammed a picture of the Bible after the accident, writing, "My faith is forever deepened because of today." Still, despite yesterday's stressful day, Hillary said she's currently feeling "great." "I slept well," she said. "I woke up very, very thankful for, you know, how everything went yesterday. It could've been a very different outcome and thankfully everyone was safe and sound, family's good." And it definitely sounds like she got lucky. "I was asleep in the back of the bus, evacuated as fast as I could," she recalled about the incident. "Thankfully I was wearing decent pajamas and then it just erupted. It happened so fast. The first person to show up to the scene was actually the assistant Lady Antebellum Tour Bus on Fire. fire chief of the county, which was a true miracle."

reparing for worship means making time and making choices. Worship, especially corporate worship, takes time. It takes commitment. We must set aside time to come. We need to guard our schedules and consider times of corporate worship a priority. Listen to what the Word of God tells us about gathering together: And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near (Hebrews 10:24–25). Here the writer of Hebrews highlights the importance of regularly meeting together with the church. He also acknowledges that “neglecting to meet together” was a problem in the early church, and had even become a habit of some. The word used here in the Greek for meeting is episunagogen. We are not to neglect the “coming together,” “assembly,” or “gathering” [synagogue]. Though we should daily encourage and pray for one another as we have opportunity to invest in each other’s lives, there is a measure of encouragement, participation, and life in the church that cannot be attained or replicated apart from the regular assembly of God’s people in corporate worship.

We need to hear God’s Word read and proclaimed together. We need to pray and sing God’s praise together. Listening to sermon recordings or broadcasts can’t replicate it. Singing worship songs along with your iPod can’t match it. We need to see and hear and know and feel the testimony of lives changed by the power of the Gospel, covenanted, unified and gathered together all in one place, in the same room, for His glory. We live in a sad day when for many the church and worship have been pushed to the periphery. It is a sad day when people are willing to profess Christ, but unwilling to identify with His body. It is a sad day when making time to gather for worship is more a matter of senseless habit or convenience than spiritual hunger or conviction. It is a sad day when, awaking to a beautiful day outside, the idea of skipping church to go to the beach or a golf course is even an option that Christians would entertain. The early church “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). They were constant and committed to worship: being under the preached Word, breaking bread, and praying. And their worship was together, fellowshipping—encouraging and strengthening one another by being together as God’s people.

As you prepare for gathered worship, make worshipping God together with your church family a priority. Remove hindrances that might keep you away and apart from worship. Set aside one day in seven for rest, as God commands. Cherish that day. Regard it as special. Make it clear to family and friends that gathering with your church family is the priority of that day. If you are providentially hindered by illness or circumstances beyond your control, or by a work schedule that requires you to miss the gathered worship of your church, then make it a priority of prayer. And don’t stop making worship a priority when you arrive for a worship service. We live in a day when it is a simple thing to bring our distractions along with us. We open our Bibles on our phones and iPads, where Facebook, Twitter, email, and messaging all reside alluringly close by. Tune out the world and enjoy the rest of adoring Christ and delighting in His Word with your brothers and sisters in gathered worship. “Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). He obtained it “with His own blood” (Acts 20:28). The church was a priority to Jesus. And it should be for us as well, not just in theory or theology, but in practice and attendance. Make it a priority to worship God regularly and faithfully together in the church.

Amit Shah reminds Congress of its list of scams

JAipur, April 25 (iANS): BJP president Amit Shah on Saturday criticised the opposition, mainly the Congress party, for describing the Modigovernment as pro-corporate despite it contributing about Rs. 2 lakh crore to the government treasury. Addressing a BJP workers' meet here, Shah said: "Congress again and again calls us a pro-corporate government, may I remind them that coal, 2G and CWG scam took place when their government was in power. It was your government who distributed coal blocks to corporate houses like Jindal

and Darda." "On the contrary we adopted transparency in allocating coal blocks and deposited around Rs.2 lakh crore of money in the government treasury. Is our government pro- corporate or was your government?" Shah also alleged that under the Congress-rule, the land of poor farmers in Rajasthan and Haryana was given to members of the families of Congress leaders. "Our government at the Centre is going to complete one year in May and the Modi government has undertaken great work during this period. The opposition

has not been able to say anything against us on corruption," he said. Highlighting the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Adarsh Gram Yojana and Make in India campaign, Shah said the BJP government is a government for the poor in the true sense. He said that during the UPA regime, inflation was at a record level. "In 10 years of their rule petrol and diesel prices were not lowered even once. Under Narendra Modi's government, prices of petrol and diesel are being lowered almost every month."

Mentioning that when the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government took over "the growth rate was 4 percent and in five years of their rule the growth rate touched 8 percent" Shah said, "When Congress government came in power they again brought it down to 4 percent. Now under our government the GDP is again at 7 percent." He also said that it was for the first time that norms of compensation for damaged crops had been modified to benefit farmers. Also speaking on the occasion, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje ex-

pressed her grief at the death of Rajasthan farmer Gajendra Singh who committed suicide during an AAP rally in Delhi on Wednesday. "The father of Gajendra has written a letter to me and sought a CBI inquiry into the incident. We are for an impartial enquiry into the tragic incident," Raje said, adding that whoever is responsible should be punished in this case. "We will leave no stone unturned to get justice for the family," Raje said. After attending the rally, Shah along with Vasundhara Raje, visited the village of Gajendra Singh.

'Centre prepared to tackle monsoon deficit'

KolKAtA, April 25 (iANS): With the Met Department predicting a "below normal monsoon" this year that is likely to affect the agro and allied industries, Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha on Saturday said the Centre is prepared to take on the challenge. "Last year, monsoon was 88 percent of the long-term average. Despite that we were able to manage the overall situation quite well both in terms of supply of food items and inflation as well," he told media persons here while attending an event. He added that emergency plans along with swift response mechanisms are in place. With last year's experience to learn from, the Centre will be able to address concerns arising due to rainfall deficit, he said. 'Rs.8.5 lakh crore to be invested in railways'

ChANDigArh, April 25 (iANS): Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday said an investment of Rs.8.5 lakh crore would be made in the Indian Railways to strengthen and modernise the railway network. New Delhi, April 25 (pti): The Home Ministry is creating an "emergency" like situation, Greenpeace India alleged today, claiming that its "arbitrary" actions were a major international embarrassment for India. Reacting to a crackdown on the Ford Foundation, Greenpeace India said these government actions will "undermine" India's standing in the global community of democratic nations while it said that it is itself facing "very real threat" of shutting down in India with all its accounts frozen. "We have been saying all along that the clampdown on dissenting voices by the Home Ministry is against what Indian democracy stands for. The MHA is creating an emergency like situation and Indian civil society is already coming together to question this 'my way or highway' attitude of the government. "It is hardly surprising that the government's actions are now starting to attract international attention. India is right now seeking a far more active role on the global stage. Such actions back home will only weaken India's global image," said Samit Aich, executive director Greenpeace India. The Home Ministry has put the Ford Foundation of the USA on its "watch list" and ordered that all funds coming from the international organisation have to be routed only with its nod due to "national security concerns". US seeks clarification wAShiNgtoN, April 25 (iANS): Expressing concern over Indian action against the Ford Foundation and Greenpeace India, the US is seeking a clarification from New Delhi for limiting "a necessary and critical debate within Indian society." "We are aware that the Ministry of Home Affairs suspended the registration of Greenpeace India and has placed the Ford Foundation on a prior permission watch list," State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters Friday in response to a question. "We remain concerned about the difficulties caused to civil society organizations by the manner in which the Foreign Contributions Regulations Act has been applied," she said "We are concerned

has been at the receiving end of an "orchestrated" and "malicious" attack by the Home Ministry for the past one year, the NGO alleged. In the past few weeks, the MHA froze all of the NGO's accounts, suspended its FCRA registration and has also reportedly written to the revenue department to revoke the society registration and charity status of Greenpeace India. "With both our foreign and domestic income accounts frozen by the government, we face the very real threat of having to shut down

that this recent ruling limits a necessary and critical debate within Indian society, and we are seeking a clarification on this issue with the appropriate Indian authorities," Harf said. The Indian home ministry had Thursday placed the Ford Foundation, one of the most powerful international funding organisations, on a watch list in "national interest and security" of the country. Earlier, on April 9 the government announced it has "temporarily" suspended the registration of Greenpeace India under the foreign contributions law for "underreporting" such funding and conducting transaction of such funds without informing the authorities as required by the law. in what is celebrated as the biggest and most vibrant democracy in the world. "We hope that democratic principles will be upheld and the government accepts that civil society voices - even those critical of the government - have a legitimate role to play in a democracy," said Aich. It said the Indian courts have upheld the right to dissent and Greenpeace India hopes the government sees that it has more to gain by allowing a healthy debate and discourse in the country rather than clamping down on dissent.

Rape is the fastest-growing crime among juveniles; 86 percent of teens arrested for various crimes come from poor families, only six percent were homeless and less than six percent were girls, crime data for the last 10 years reveals. Arrests of juveniles in the 16-18 age-group increased 60 percent from 2003 to 2013, the highest among all three juvenile age groups, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a division of the home ministry. Juvenile arrests for rape rose 288 percent over this period and arrests for theft increased 68 percent, the data showed. Contrary to popular belief that juveniles from broken homes commit the most crimes, 81 percent of teens arrested in 2013, lived with their parents, the data revealed. The figures lend perspective to an unfolding national debate around a cabinet decision to enact a law that proposes trying juveniles as adults. The demand for such a law arose after a 17-yearold was sentenced to three years in a reform facility after he and five others gang-raped and battered a physiotherapy student in a Delhi bus on December 16, 2012. The proposed law provides that in the case of heinous crimes committed by adolescents aged 16 to 18, for examination by a Juvenile Justice Board to assess if the suspect should be regarded as a child or an adult.

Juveniles' law in the USA, UK and China United States: The upper and lower age of juvenile court delinquency differs from state to state. In the majority of states, the lower age is not specified (NS) and the upper age is 17. For example, in California, the lower age is NS and the upper age is 17; in New York: lower-7, upper-15; in Texas: lower-10, upper-16. China: The general age requirement for bearing criminal responsibility under Chinese law is 16. A person aged from 14 to 16 bears criminal responsibility in intentionally committing serious criminal offenses spelt out in the criminal law, including homicide, rape and robbery. An offender aged from 14 to Children living with parents committed most crimes As mentioned earlier, juveniles living with parents accounted for more than 80 percent of arrests 35,244 in 2013, according to the NCRB report. No more than 2,462, or six percent, of juveniles arrested in 2013 were homeless and 5,800 lived with guardians. Seventy-seven percent of juveniles arrested in 2013 belonged to poor families with annual incomes up to

18 is given a lighter or mitigated punishment. There is no criminal punishment for an offender under the age of 14. United Kingdom: The minimum age of criminal responsibility in England and Wales is currently 10. Those below this age are considered incapable of forming criminal intent. Children arrested for crimes in England and Wales and held in custody, must be separated from the adult population of the jail. The general principle for children charged with crimes is that they should not be held in police custody but instead be taken care of by social services in local authority accommodation.

The fastest growing crime: Rape The number of juveniles arrested on rape charges rose 288 percent, as we said, from 535 in 2003 to 2,074 in 2013. As many as 10,693 juveniles were arrested on rape charges over 10 years from 2003 to 2013. Similarly, arrests on the charge of assaulting a woman “with intent to outrage her modesty (section 354 IPC)” and “insult to modesty of women (sec 509 IPC)” rose 117 percent compared to the previous year. Most juveniles were arrested for theft in 2013: 7,969 of them. Over to parliament Parliament will now decide if juveniles can be tried as adults. One of the major amendments include removal of a clause in the law that relates to the trial of a person above the age of 21 years as an adult for committing serious offences when the person was between the ages of 16 and 18. The amendment also increases the period of preliminary inquiry by the Juvenile Justice Board in case of heinous offences committed by children aged 16 to 18. The amendment to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2014, will be introduced in the current session of Parliament.

100th year of Gallipoli battle GALLIPOLI | APRIL 25 (AP): For the first time at age 95, Bill Grayden has come to Gallipoli, where his father stormed the beach and took a bullet through his lung during the ill-fated British-led World War I invasion. Grayden was among thousands of Australians and New Zealanders who made the pilgrimage from the southern hemisphere to this distant peninsula in Turkey. They joined world leaders at a dawn service Saturday marking exactly 100 years since the invasion, which had aimed to secure a naval route from the Mediterranean to Istanbul through the Dardanelles, and take the Ottomans out of the war. During the emotional ceremony, Britain's Prince Charles and the prime ministers of Australia and New Zealand spoke of the heroism of the soldiers from their countries and other Allied nations. "For so many, the rising sun that day would be their last," Australia's Chief of Defense, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, told the

crowd of thousands gathered at Anzac Cove near the landing site. That was not the case for Bill Grayden's father Len. Five days after the landing, the elder Grayden was found wounded and nearly motionless on the field. During the heat of battle, someone noticed a slight hand movement and he was evacuated to a hospital ship and ultimately survived. The subtle moment that determined his fate demonstrates how small differences can substantially change the course of history. Len Grayden would return to Australia to raise a family. His son Bill later served in multiple campaigns in World War II and became a politician. He has raised 10 children of his own, 44 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and so far one great-great grandchild. The Gallipoli campaign also altered the course for the countries on both sides of the trenches. The landings marked the start of a fierce battle that lasted for eight months. Around

44,000 Allied troops and 86,000 Ottoman soldiers died. Australians and New Zealanders mark the anniversary of the landings every year as important national days of remembrance. Many of the attendees at Saturday's service had slept at the commemoration site in sleeping bags.

Most had won the coveted tickets in national lotteries. The tragic fate of troops from Australia and New Zealand is said to have inspired an identity distinct from the British. The anniversary of the start of the land campaign on April 25, known as ANZAC Day, after the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, is

Powerful quake strikes Nepal: Things to Know Gregory Katz Associated Press

A

powerful earthquake struck the Nepal region on Saturday, causing widespread casualties and triggering an avalanche on Mount Everest. The key information known at this time: HOW BAD IS THE DAMAGE? It's too early to tell, but early indications suggest the early figure of 906 people killed in four countries is likely to rise substantially in the coming days. The magnitude-7.8 quake was the worst to hit Nepal in eight decades and caused damage and fatalities in neighboring countries as well. In addition to the hundreds of deaths in Nepal, some 20 people were killed in India, six in Tibet, and two in Bangladesh. Two Chinese citizens died at the Nepal-China border. The earthquake hit a heavily populated area of Nepal, including the capital, Kathmandu, and its impact spread far beyond the Kathmandu Valley. Strong aftershocks were felt an hour after the initial temblor. Earthquake experts are preparingforhighnumbersin terms of deaths and damage. "This is a very large earthquake in a significantly populated region with infrastructure that has been damaged in past earthquakes," U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Paul Earle said. "Significant fatalities are expected." Local hospitals were already filling with injured residents, and Kathmandu's international airport was shut down, hampering initial relief efforts in the isolated mountainous country.

WHAT DOES 'RED ALERT' ISSUED BY U.S. OFFICIALS MEAN? The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was strong enough to merit a "red alert" for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. It said that "high casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread. Past red alerts have required a national or international response." Quick USGS calculations estimate a two-thirds likelihood of between 1,000 and 100,000 fatalities and damage between $100 million and $10 billion. Scientists estimate that more than 105 million people felt at least moderate shaking during the quake.

WHAT HAPPENED ON MOUNT EVEREST? A devastating avalanche swept across Mount Everest after the earthquake, claiming at least eight lives with an unspecified number of people missing and injured. The avalanche struck near one of the famed mountain's most dangerous spots. It swept down between the Khumbu Icefall, known for its harsh conditions, and the base camp used by international climbing expeditions. There were unverified reports of avalanches on other parts of the mountain. Nepalese officials said some 30 people were injured at the base camp. Facebook postings by climbers suggested that some people may have been buried in their tents when the avalanche hit. Climbers and their support teams were leaving the base camp Saturday looking for safer locations. More than 4,000 climbers have scaled the 8,850-meter (29,035foot) summit since 1953, WHAT HAPPENED? Dos and Don'ts during an earthquake tay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware S that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimize your move-

ments to a few steps that reach a nearby safe place. Follow these steps in case you feel tremors: If indoors 1. Drop to the ground; take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and hold on until the shaking stops. If there is no table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building. 2. Protect yourself by staying under the lintel of an inner door, in the corner of a room, under a table or even under a bed. 3. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, (such as lighting fixtures or furniture). 4. Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place. 5. Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, load bearing doorway. 6. Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on. If outdoors 1. Avoid moving. However, move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires. 2. If you are in open space, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings; at exits; and alongside exterior walls. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects. If in a moving vehicle 1. Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires. 2. Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake. If trapped under debris 1. Do not light a match. 2. Do not move about or kick up dust. 3. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. 4. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout if you have no other way to communicate. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust so be careful.

marked as a coming of age for both nations. "In volunteering to serve, they became more than soldiers. They became the founding heroes of modern Australia," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said at the service. The doomed offensive came to be seen as a folly of British war planning. The

decision to launch the attack nearly ended the career of Winston Churchill, who as First Lord of the Admiralty came up with the plan he thought would help bring an early end to the war. Prince Charles spoke about soldiers who were "tormented by the thought of their comrades being left behind" and that their graves would remain unvisited. He appeared to be moved as he read from passages written by Lt. Ken Miller of the 2nd Battalion and Benjamin Leane of the 10th Battalion. Leane had addressed his wife and children from Gallipoli, saying that he was not afraid of death or what comes after. He later died in France, never to see them again. Turkish officials and soldiers also took part in the dawn remembrance, part of two days of ceremonies at the site of the battle. Gallipoli was also important in the emergence of modern Turkey. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk used his prominence as a commander at Gallipoli, known as Canakkale to the

Turks, to vault into prominence, lead Turkey's War of Independenceandultimately found the Turkish Republic. Thousands marched in Gallipoli to honor the soldiers of the Turkish 57th Regiment, among the first unit to defend against the ANZAC landings, which Ataturk — then Lt.Col. Mustafa Kemal — famously commanded: "I do not order you to attack, I order you to die." In the Turkish capital Ankara, the mausoleum of Ataturk was left open throughout the night allowing thousands of visitors to pay their respects to their "Gazi" — Ataturk's honorary title as a victorious Turkish warrior. New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key noted that when the ANZAC forces landed, Ottoman Turks were defending their homeland. "We have coastlines similar to this at home. If the situation were reversed we know that New Zealand soldiers would have been willing to lay down their lives to defend their country," he said.

Human traffickers now on Facebook LOndOn, APRIL 25 (IAnS): Businesses are increasingly using social media -- even the illegal ones. Now, even smugglers have taken to the Facebook to woo their clients. The human smugglers are offering desperate migrants passage across the Mediterranean to Europe, according to a Financial Times report. The paper reported the existence of several Facebook pages in Arabic offering passage to Europe, many via Libya to Italy, but others from Turkey to Greece. And they promise a comfortable journey, with

some of them even claiming to be doing the smuggling quite "ethically". On a closed Facebook group offering tips to would-be migrants, a person, who goes under the pseudonym of Abu Moaz advertises crossings by inflatable boat to Greece. The voyage lasts about an hour-and-a-half and costs $950 per person. Anyone, interested can speak to him via the WhatsApp or Viber numbers on the site. The boat leaves from the Turkish coastline somewhere between Bodrum

and Izmir. "It is people smuggling, no more and no less," he was quoted as saying by the FT. He, however, insisted that unlike other smugglers, he travels with the migrants on the boat to ensure they reach their destination. "Others just show the passengers how to operate the engine, but they can get lost and run out of petrol. I will only take 20 people, though the boat can accommodate 25," he added. Abu Moaz is dismissive of the people smugglers, who send migrants in dangerously overloaded boats.

Gunmen kill activist in Pakistan KARAchI, APRIL 25 (AP): Gunmen on a motorcycle killed a prominent women's rights activist in Pakistan just hours after she held a forum on the country's restive Baluchistan region, home to a long-running insurgency, police said Saturday. While investigators declined to speculate on a motive for the killing of Sabeen Mehmud, friends and colleagues immediately described her death as a targeted assassination in Pakistan, a country with a nascent democracy where the military and intelligence services still hold tremendous sway. The gunmen shot both Mehmud and her mother, Mehnaz Mehmud, as they stopped at a traffic light Friday night in an upscale Karachi neighborhood, senior police officer Zafar Iqbal said. Later, journalists saw their car at a nearby police station, the front driver's side window smashed out and a pair of sandals on the floorboard, broken glass all around them. Blood stained the car's white body. "Two men riding a motorcycle opened fire on the car," Iqbal said. Mehmud "died on her way to the hospital. Her mother was also wounded." Thousands of people have disappeared from the province in recent years amid a government crackdown on nationalists and insurgent groups there. Activists blame the government for the disappearances, something authorities deny. In a statement Saturday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned Mehmud's killing and ordered an investigation into the attack. The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad also condemned Mehmud's slaying and offered condolences to her loved ones.

rockets outlast Mavericks in scorefest

DALLAs, ApRiL 25 (Ap): James Harden deferred to Dwight Howard and his role players when Houston swept two games at home to open a first-round series against Dallas. The MVP candidate took over in the game that put the Rockets on the verge of Harden's first postseason series victory with Howard in their second season together - even interrupting his big man on a question about the best rebounding game of the center's playoff career. Harden scored a playoff career-high 42 points, Howard had his postseason best with 26 rebounds and the Rockets beat the Mavericks 130-128 on Friday night for a 3-0 lead in their first-round series. "He was a beast," Harden said as Howard struggled for the right words about his big night on the boards. "He was a beast. Go ahead," he said, nodding toward his teammate. By that time, Howard had the words. "Tonight wasn't my night to score. I was OK with that," Howard said, although he did have seven of his 13 points to help Houston hold on in the fourth quarter. "But the one thing that I can always control is

the paint and just try to get every rebound." The high-scoring game was Dallas' first without effectively banished point guard Rajon Rondo, and Monta Ellis had a playoff career-high 34 points to match Dirk Nowitzki. But Ellis missed a potential tying jumper just before the buzzer, leaving Dallas to face a fourth straight year without winning a postseason series since taking the franchise's first championship. Game 4 is Sunday at Dallas. No team has ever rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win an NBA postseason series. "It was an up-and-down game, shot-making and play-making all over the place," said Nowitzki, who scored 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks rallied from 11 down after leading by 13 in the second - and trailing by 11 in the opening quarter as well. "This ranks up there with the toughest playoffs losses I've had in my long playoff career." Harden set his playoff career high and hit 40 points with a three-point play on a layup when Dallas was within a point. After Harden fouled Nowitzki on a 3-point attempt and the big German Rockets' Dwight Howard, top, dunks the ball in front of, from left to right, Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki, Al-Farouq hit all the free throws, Hard- Houston Aminu (7) and Amar'e Stoudemire (1) in the second half of Game 3 in an NBA basketball first-round playoff series Friday, en hit a jumper over Tyson April 24, 2015, in Dallas. Chandler. The ball rattled off the rim, hit the backboard and dropped back in for a 129-126 lead with 12.7 seconds remaining. The Mavericks had one more chance, trailing by two with 6.7 seconds left, but Ellis wasn't close, missing to the right of the rim. More concerned with protecting the rim after Howard and Josh Smith combined for five dunks off alley-oop passes in a key run in Game 2, the Mavericks let Harden have his shots. He found a rhythm and did most of his damage without his normal load of free throws, making 15 of 24 from the field. "The first two games, they kind of put two on the ball and kind of got me off the ball," Harden said. "This game, there were really no traps or anything like that. They were just giving me lanes and letting me be aggressive. So I just tried to read the play and make the best decision." When Dallas focused on slowing Harden in the second half, Corey Brewer hit two corner 3s and scored 13 of his 15 points. Harden had nine assists, including a nifty pass for an easy dunk by Smith, who had 18 points. The Mavericks were playing with-

out Rondo two days after coach Rick Carlisle said he had a previously undisclosed back injury while acknowledging that he didn't think Rondo would play for Dallas again. The announcement came after Carlisle benched Rondo for almost the entire second half of Game 2. HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR The Rockets had a season high in points in taking a 42-36 lead after the first quarter. The 258 combined points were the most in regulation in the playoffs since April 29, 1995, when Houston beat Utah 140126. "It was a hell of a game if you like offense," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "If you like defense, maybe not so much." CARLISLE'S BEEF The Dallas coach took issue with several calls but had his harshest words for the referees on a play early in the fourth quarter when Howard appeared to push Devin Harris out of bounds before grabbing a loose ball. He passed to Trevor Ariza for a 3-pointer and a 10499 lead. "That stuff's got to stop," Carlisle said. "Howard is throwing people all over the place. And that can't happen in Game 4."

Sachin got belly dancers on my b'day in NZ: Wadekar

mumBAi, ApRiL 25 (pti): Former India captain and manager Ajit Wadekar spilled the beans about "prankster Sachin Tendulkar", who once got half a dozen belly dancers on his 53rd birthday during cricket team's tour of New Zealand back in 1994. During a Cricket Club of India function, here yesterday, Wadekar recalled how Tendulkar had pulled a fast one on him during that particular tour. "There was this incident in New Zealand. It was on my birthday which is April 1. We had a lovely net session day before and I retired to bed early as I used to fool others on All Fools' Day. I was half asleep when at stroke of midnight, Sachin was at my room door with a serious look on his face,? Wadekar recalled during his keynote address at the Legends' Summit on the occasion of Tendulkar's 42nd birthday. "I asked Sachin as to why he was knocking at my door at such an odd hour and he said that something was wrong with Kapil Dev. I wore my pyjamas and went to Kapil's room two floors away. When we entered the room, I saw the entire team with a cake and champagne

bottled. I was shocked and surprised," the septuagenarian fondly recollected. What he said after that had the audience in splits. "Suddenly, from the connecting room, belly dancers, six of them, walked in and started dancing. I wondered this must have been Sachin's idea as Sunny (Sunil Gavaskar), though a commentator on that tour, was not to

be seen. Sunny is famous for his pranks but this must have been Sachin's idea," Wadekar said bringing peals of laughter from those present. "I really enjoyed belly dancing and had two glasses of champagne, before I realized that everyone had started leaving. I was suddenly left with one belly dancer. Being the manager of the team, I had to observe the code of conduct and retire to my room," he added cheekily. On Tendulkar's cricketing acumen, Wadekar recollected another incident during a series in Sri Lanka. "We were playing in Sri Lanka and he would come up with ideas. After team meetings, he would come to my room and have dinner so that he did not have to pay for it," there was another round of laughter. "Sachin came up with the idea of us starting to attack by bowling only on the middle and legstump line. I said to him, "If you can show me how one can bowl all six balls on middle and leg, I will take it seriously.” “Next day, he did bowl six balls on middle and leg. That is Sachin Tendulkar. He is above everyone else."

Vilanova memory lives on at Barca a year after his death

BARCELONA, ApRiL 25 (REutERs): A year since the death of former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova, his memory lives on at the club where he played an integral part in the most successful era in its history. Vilanova died aged 45 on April 25 last year after a long battle against parotid gland cancer that cut short the life of a coach in his prime. The way he steadfastly attempted to carry on despite his illness in his typically understated manner drew much admiration and there was a considerable outpouring of sadness at his passing. People from the sporting world and many others who wanted to pay tribute, attended a memorial service at Barcelona cathedral. Vilanova was Pep Guardiola's assistant during a golden spell for the club when they won three La Liga titles and two Champions League

trophies from 2008-12. While Guardiola was the public face, Vilanova worked hard behind the scenes as Barca not only won trophies but did it by taking apart opposition teams with their brand of short-passing football that became known as 'tiki-taka'. Vilanova would

take charge of preparing the strategy and advise on potential signings as Barca went on to win 14 out of a possible 19 trophies. The pair knew each other from passing through Barca's youth system but Vilanova was let go in 1990 and played for several lower league teams before final-

ly getting his chance in the Spanish top flight with Celta Vigo in the mid-1990s. It was as a coach that he really made his mark though and after Guardiola left, he took charge of the Barca first team. Barcelona went on to make a record start to a La Liga season with 18 wins from 19 games but in December 2012, Vilanova was diagnosed with cancer for a second time. It meant his assistant Jordi Roura took charge of the team on those occasions when he was undergoing treatment. Barca won the league but at the end of the season, Vilanova announced he was resigning to concentrate on his recovery from the illness. He is fondly remembered at the club for not only being a Barcelona man but also his unassuming manner and in February this year a pitch at their training ground was named after him.

It started with some verbal sparring in news conferences. Then it became physical with a touchline flare-up when they last crossed paths. What's in store next in the increasingly spiky relationship between Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger? The game between Arsenal and Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on Sunday pits the top two teams in the English Premier League together. Some of the world's best players are on show, and the league title is at stake. Yet, much of the build-up has focused on the animosity between the coaches, who have developed the biggest managerial rivalry in the league. Wenger and Mourinho have sought to play down their feuding this week, preferring to focus on the game itself. But when the pressure ramps up, and the atmosphere gets more intense on Sunday, don't be surprised if there is an exchange. "He is a manager of a big club in the same city where I work and I live," Mourinho said on Friday. "A big club with the same objectives we have in the competitions we play and, because of that, always comes a little bit of rivalry. "But for me, it's no different from when I was at Inter with the (AC) Milan manager, is not different from when I was at Real (Madrid) with Atletico managers, or at Porto with Benfica managers. It's the same." Yet, Mourinho undeniably has targeted Wenger. In the past, Mourinho has called the Frenchman a "voyeur" who "speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea." He has criticized the lack of English players in Wenger's teams, and took things even further last season when he labeled Wenger a "specialist in failure" be-

cause Arsenal had gone without a trophy from 2005-2014. Wenger, for his part, called Mourinho "disconnected with reality and disrespectful" in 2005, during the Portuguese coach's first spell at Chelsea. When Arsenal played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in October, Wenger was incensed by a challenge on Alexis Sanchez and walked across the Chelsea technical area to complain. Mourinho gestured for Wenger to retreat, only for the Arsenal manager to push Mourinho in the chest, triggering a tellingoff for both men from the fourth official. At the heart of Wenger's frustration is likely his inability to get the better of Mourinho. In 12 meetings, Mourinho has never lost to Wenger. "We have not always lost, first of all, in 12 attempts. We have come close to beating them a few times and they've always had very strong teams," Wenger said on Thursday. "I'm not a great believer in history. I just think football is down to the fact that the performance on the day will decide the game and the result, so let's focus on that." Tactically, Mourinho has had the edge over Wenger, as he has with the rest of the Premier League's top managers. In 29 games against Arsenal and the two Manchester clubs in his two

spells with Chelsea, Mourinho's teams have lost only twice. While Wenger's teams have adopted an easy-on-the-eye passing game, Mourinho's sides can be more pragmatic and negative — but more successful at the same time. Indeed, another of Wenger's criticisms of Mourinho, back in 2005, revolved around playing styles. "Once a sport encourages teams who refuse to take the initiative," Wenger said, referring to Mourinho's Chelsea, "the sport is in danger." Another sub-plot to Sunday's game is Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who left Arsenal for Barcelona in 2011 after eight years and more than 300 appearances. Arsenal reportedly opted out of its buy-back option when it became apparent he could leave the Nou Camp, and Mourinho moved to sign the Spain international. It will be the first time Fabregas has played against Arsenal in the Premier League. "I know why he chose Chelsea. I don't know why he didn't choose Arsenal," Mourinho said. "I just know that we promised him we'd build a team very adapted to his style of play. That he was going to be an important player in our project. And that, normally, good projects always end with titles. He was looking for that."

Wiz Khalifa opens up about Paul Walker tribute song

W

iz Khalifa has opened up about his tribute song for Paul Walker in the latest Fast and Furious film, saying it "connects with so many people". His song See You Again was used in the Furious 7 soundtrack, reportedly as Paul is seen driving off into the distance with the hit playing in the background. The poignant tune, which features Charlie Puth on vocals, has since become the quickest-selling single of the year. In an interview with BET, Wiz said of its growing success: "The fact that it connects with so many people, that’s what is really, really important for me so I’m f**king with it.” He explained vocalist Charlie initially wrote the lyrics about a friend who died in a car crash, and Wiz later took it over. He told the site: “My whole objective [when writing See You Again] was to make something that everybody can connect with. It feels personal, but it’s something that everybody can feel too. It’s not so personal that you’re disconnected to it. Basically, that was my mind frame for it. Think about family in general. Not necessarily my family or someone else’s family that everybody goes through in that situation.” He added: "I had a lot of good direction from the Fast & Furious people as far as the texture of the song and how they wanted it to feel. What was most important, too, was to make sure that it was a celebration of life. You know, to reflect on things, but also just to celebrate what we’ve been through." The track marks Khalifa's second appearance at the top of the Official Singles Chart after reaching the summit back in 2012 guesting on Maroon 5's Payphone. See You Again also sets a new streaming record, racking up 3.68 million streams in seven days and smashing past Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do.

The original car heads to the auction block at Mecum Auctions in Indianapolis, Indiana, between May 12 and 17, reports aceshowbiz.com. The car, which is one of a few used in the movie, can be seen in the memorable final scenes of the movie. In the scene, Walker is driving the bright orange coloured car, racing against actor Vin Diesel who is in his Dodge Charger, and jumping across a railroad crossing before Diesel collides with a truck. The car is equipped with a pair of Holley Performance nitrous-oxide bottles, as in the movie, but they are not connected. Additionally, it has a five-speed manual transmission, a heavy duty suspension and roll cage. The phenomenal car is expected to fetch around $200,000.

The 2nd unit, who were responsible for some of the big action-packed moments, including the now famous parachute car jump, were not credited, reported TMZ. As many as 25 stunt workers, including one of late actor Paul Walker's stunt doubles were uncredited. Universal has said that they are "looking into it". "Furious 7" has become the 20th movie to reach the billion dollar mark and it could be well on its way to topping the list. Fast & Furious 8, the first complete film without the late Paul Walker, will roar into theaters April 14, 2017. "I swear to you and I swear to my brother upstairs we're going to make the best movie you've ever seen," Diesel said. Diesel did not give further details about the project. Furious 7, released April 3, passed the $1 billion mark globally after just 17 days of release, a record for the fastest sprint to the box office milestone. The film has now made $1.15 billion.

T

he Royal family has been plagued with rumors for years now that Princess Diana has a secret daughter living in hiding in America – and according to a shocking new report from GLOBE Magazine, Prince Charles met with the woman secretly and their fiery confrontation was all caught on surveillance tape. GLOBE reported in 2014 that when Kate Middleton and Prince William traveled to New York City, Kate met with “Sarah,” Princess Diana’s secret daughter – and she informed her husband that Sarah was a dead ringer for his late mother. Prince William was so convinced that he had a sister in America that he sent his father to meet with the woman in Kentucky. According to the whisperings and a tell-all book, “The Disappearance of Ol-

ivia,” before Princess Diana was married to Prince Charles – Queen Elizabeth ordered a Royal physician to do an examination on Diana to ensure that she could get pregnant. The doctor also took a sample of Charles’s sperm to ensure that they would not have any problems conceiving together. Afterward Queen Elizabeth ordered the Doctor to destroy the eggs, but instead he implanted one in his wife – and that is how Sarah was allegedly born. Although she is technically Diana and Charles’ daughter, she was carried in a surrogate and raised in America. The April 13th edition of GLOBE Magazine reveals that Prince Charles travelled to Kentucky for a super secret meeting with Sarah after Prince William hounded him about his secret daughter. The magazine explains, “The clandestine reunion was arranged under strict secu-

rity during Prince Charles’s recent trip to America with his wife Camilla. But, it was caught on a surveillance camera and now the palace is trying to hide and incredible encounter and photo from the world.” GLOBE goes on to reveal that during their meeting Sarah begged Charles to take a DNA test so she could know the truth, and whether she really was his and Diana’s child. The future King refused and shouted that she was a gold-digger and stormed off. GLOBE Magazine goes on to reveal that Sarah got the last words in and “erupted in anger shouting at Charles, ‘I know you killed my mother, I know you killed Diana.’” GLOBE’s inside source at the Palace revealed, “The truth is Charles was shaken by Sarah’s likeliness to Diana in her looks and mannerisms. Deep down he suspects that she is his child, but he will never admit it. And, there will be no DNA test.”

erman Ambassador Michael Steiner along with actor Saif Ali Khan, his mother, Sharmila Tagore, and Javed Akhtar launched a remake of the famous music video "Kal ho naa ho" featuring Steiner`s wife, Eliese, former foreign minister Salman Khurshid and the ambassador himself. The project titled "Lebe jetzt!", which means "Kal ho na ho" in German, was launched on Friday at the German embassy here. Karan Johar, who directed the film "Kal Ho Naa Ho", and Sonu Nigam, who lent his voice to the song, sent video messages for the event from New York and Mumbai respectively. More than 700 guests were mesmerised with the Indo-German tribute to Bollywood. "Traditionally, diplomacy has got to do with government to government relations, but modern democracy has got to do with people to people relations and that`s what

we`ve achieved through the music video," Michael said. The song`s lyricist, Akhtar, said, "This music video has proved my worst suspicions right; I`d always suspected that politicians and diplomats are actors, and now we have a documentary proof." The original video for the song was shot in the US, wherein western outfits were donned by the actors. But the remake was shot in the capital featuring the German ambassador as Shah Rukh Khan and his wife as Preity Zinta in ethnic Indian wear. It also features former foreign minister Khurshid as Saif. Although the ambassador was thoroughly into the making of the video, he admitted struggling with the lip sync. He also said his wife has a collection of 150 Bollywood movies out of which "Kaagaz Ke Phool" is her favourite. The evening saw elite guests from the capital including ambassadors from other embassies as well as lawmakers.

"The government, armed and terrorist groups continue to kill, maim, rape, torture and take Syria to new lows that seemed unimaginable a few years ago," More than 23,000 migrants have reached Italy this year alone, and an estimated 1,750 have drowned in the attempt. them are Syrians fleeing the civil war in their homeland, as well as Eritreans, Somalis, Palestinians and sub-Saharan Africans. The death toll includes the estimated 750 migrants who were locked into the hold and lower deck of a boat that sank at the weekend after it accidentally collided with a container ship that had been sent to its aid. The Security Council has been split between Western powers seeking to pressure Damascus and the regime's allies Rus-

sia and China, which both wield veto powers. Jolie called for council "unity" to solve the crisis, and aid for the millions of Syrians who have fled to neighboring countries. "If we cannot end the conflict, we have an inescapable moral duty to help refugees and provide legal avenues to safety," Jolie said. "The crisis in Syria illustrates that our inability to find diplomatic solutions causes mass displacement, traps millions of people in exile, statelessness and displacement," she said. C M Y K

MuMbAI, AprIl 25 (AGeNCIeS): Lasith Malinga and Mitchell McClenaghan combined with seven wickets to hand the Mumbai Indians a 20-run victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad in an Indian Premier League clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Malinga effectively ended the contest in the penultimate over when the veteran Sri Lankan right-arm quick claimed a three-wicket maiden with the Sunrisers still needing 31 runs off the final 12 balls. The Sunrisers ended on 137 for eight in reply to Mumbai’s 157 for eight. Shikhar Dhawan and captain David Warner (nine) had given the Sunrisers a good start to the chase with an opening stand of 45 off only 30 balls but when Dhawan was caught by Malinga at short mid-wicket off McClenaghan for a well-played 42 off 29 balls, which included seven boundaries and one maximum, the visitors never recovered. The New Zealand left-arm quick also claimed the wickets of Lokesh Rahul (25) and Ravi Bopara (23) to end with figures of 4-0-20-3 while Malinga ended with impressive stats of 4-1-23-4. Lendl Simmons had earlier smashed six boundaries and one maximum ion his way to a half century, before being clean bowled by Dale Steyn (4-0-38-2) for 51 off 42 balls. Simmons and Pathiv Patel (17) gave the hosts a decent start with an opening stand of 42 off 38 balls before slipping to 49 for two as Praveen Kumar (4-0-32-2) had Unmakt Chand (five) caught at mid-wicket by Dhawan. Simmons and Rohit Sharma (24 off 15 balls) then combined to add 51 runs for the third wicket off 33 balls to re-ignite Mumbai’s innings before Steyn knocked over Simmons’ stumps. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowlers, ending with 4-0-263, which included a double-strike in the final over to prevent Mumbai from getting over the 160-run mark. Trent Boult bowled well up-front as the New Zealand left-arm seamer conceded 11 runs in his first over but came back well to end with figures of 4-0-27-0.

Messi scores as Barca beat Espanyol bArCelONA, AprIl 25 (Ap): Lionel Messi helped set up Neymar's opener before scoring a goal of his own to lead 10-man Barcelona to a 2-0 win at Espanyol on Saturday, provisionally increasing its lead of the Spanish league. Luis Suarez, the third member of Barcelona's star-studded attack, played a part in both goals against Barcelona's cross-town rival. Messi's incisive pass started a move that Neymar finished off in the 17th minute after Suarez had coolly let the ball run between his legs. Suarez then crossed for Messi to double the visitors' advantage in the 25th. Barcelona lost left back Jordi Alba to back-to-back bookings in the 54th after he continued to protest. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard played in his 500th Premier League match but it ended in disappointment, with Jordon Ibe coming closest to snatching victory for the team in the 62nd minute when his deflected shot struck the crossbar. Graziano Pelle toepoked the ball past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 29th minute to put the hosts ahead before Erik Lamela's flicked header from Eric Dier's cross made it 1-1 in the 43rd. Pelle then added his second in the 65th with a powerful header. Nacer Chadli equalized in the 70th for the draw which keeps Spurs a point above Ronald Koeman's Southampton. Swansea condemned Newcastle to an unwanted club record of seven straight Premier League

defeats, beating the Magpies 3-2 at St James' Park. There were protests by home fans both before and during the game, with owner Mike Ashley the target of pre-arranged action in the 34th minute, drawing attention to the 34 million pounds ($51.6 million) the club banked during the last financial year. In other games, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy scored just a minute after Burnley missed a penalty, securing a 1-0 win in a high-stakes game between teams fighting to avoid relegation from the Premier League, while Dame N'Doye scored twice to give Hull a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday that lifted the team away from the Premier League relegation zone.

‘Floyd Mayweather's violent history ignored’

WASHINGTON, AprIl 25 (reuTerS): While world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather prepares for his May 2 bout against Manny Pacquiao, women's advocates believe his history of domestic violence is merely a footnote to the biggest fight in years. Mayweather hit his ex-girlfriend in front of two of their children in 2010, resulting in a 90day prison sentence, just one incident highlighting his turbulent relationships with women. "Floyd Mayweather has a terrible history of domestic violence, the list goes on and on and on," USA Today columnist Christine Brennan, who often writes about women's issues in sports, told Reuters. "It's amazing to me that very few people know about it or seem to care about it." The National Football League has come under fire over the last year for its handling of domestic violence cases and responded by strengthening its sanctions

against offenders. The National Basketball Association and National Hockey League are closely watching offenders in its ranks and cracking down. Yet boxing never punished the 38-year-old Mayweather, who stands to make up to $180

million next Saturday. Former Olympic swimming champion Nancy Hogshead, who is now chief executive of Champion Women, an advocacy group for girls and women in sports, said Mayweather has gotten "a pass" on his history of do-

mestic violence. She said boxing promoters look the other way towards violence in the home. "I'm not surprised about their attitude," she said. "They won't even try to make the sport safer, try to do what football is doing, trying to prevent cases of ALS (or

Lou Gehrig's disease) from the repeated hits to the head." Over the last decade, Mayweather has been accused of assaulting five different women in at least seven different incidents that resulted in arrest or citation. AJ Maestes, president of the sports analytics firm Navigate Research, said boxing promoters "are desperate to get their guy on stage." "The sport of boxing needs something to stand out, they need a star to draw eyeballs," he said. "The (mixed martial arts group) UFC is outperforming them on every measure." In a recent interview with Yahoo's Katie Couric, Mayweather denied hitting his ex-girlfriend for which pleaded guilty in 2011 to reduced misdemeanour charges and was sent to prison. He said he was merely trying to restrain her. Mayweather suggested he was a target. "I'm black, I'm rich and I'm outspoken," he said. "Those are three strikes right there."
