india’s rising pollution
Wangtin, Tikhak form ‘NSCN (Reformation)’ Narendra Modi blames changing lifestyles
NEW DELHI, AprIL 6 (Ap): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday blamed the changing lifestyles that have come with India’s economic development for rising pollution levels that have given the country some of the world’s dirtiest air. With his government rolling out a new air quality index to 10 of the nation’s cities, Modi urged Indians to curtail waste and conserve resources even as they become wealthier, in order to prevent an environmental catastrophe. “Until we focus on our lifestyle and get the world to focus on it, we will not succeed despite all other measures being taken,” Modi told state environment ministers in New Delhi. Air pollution kills millions of people every year, including more than 627,000 in India, according to the World Health Organization. India announced plans last year for the air quality index, releasing a draft proposal in October based on New Delhi’s small network of air quality monitors. Experts have criticized New Delhi’s readings as erratic and unreliable, calling for more transparency and rigor in the data. Besides, environmental activists said the index had little value without offering

advice on how to cope with high pollution levels, or announcing any measures to reduce pollution. The index — a simple ranking of pollution over a 24-hour period as good, satisfactory, moderately polluted, poor, very poor or severe — will be used New Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Faridabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. A few of the cities, however, have just one air monitor. New Delhi has 20 in operation, but even that is deemed very low. The index’s scale may
also downplay pollution levels. For example, Monday’s pollution level at the U.S. Embassy in central Delhi was described as “moderately poor” on the Indian scale. But that same level is considered “unhealthy” by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency. “It is time to push for aggressive and time-bound action in Delhi and other Indian cities to meet clean air standards and reduce the public health risk,” said the Delhi-based Center for Science and Environment, a research and lobbying group.

DImApUr, AprIL 6 (mExN): Y. Wangtin Naga and P. Tikhak on Monday officially announced the formation of a new Naga political group going by the nomenclature, ‘National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Reformation)’ or NSCN (R) and its government as ‘Government of the People’s Republic of Nagaland’ or GPRN. The decision to float this new group was resolved unanimously during a joint council meeting held at Mon district under the chairmanship of Wangtin Naga and attended by members from both the ‘Naga Army’ and the civil set up, a press statement from the two leaders informing of the latest development informed. Wangtin, who was supervisor of the Cease-fire Supervisory Board (CFSB) and Tikhak, a senior functionary were expelled by NSCN (K) president and chairman, SS Khaplang after misunderstanding arose over the recent abrogation of ceasefire with the Government of India. The duo, wanted to continue with the ceasefire maintaining that “violence has never served a good purpose and the Naga political problem can only be resolved through peace and negotiation” while Khaplang had it abrogated because the “14 years of ceasefire between NSCN (K) and India has become a mockery and futile exercise.”
In their first communiqué’ as the newest Naga political group, the NSCN (R) justified their decision by maintaining that “it was never our choice to create another group but situation was created as such that, we have been left to fend for ourselves and also we need to accommodate all our followers.” They admitted it was quite understandable that the “Naga people will not be able to accept a new political outfit where there is already a plethora of NPGs.” However, it assured that the primary agenda of NSCN (R) would be to “develop a sense of brotherhood among the Naga family and also to rebuild the trust and faith among the Naga society.”“We would also like to give opportunity to all the Naga people, NGO’s, social organization, intellectuals and leaders of various tribal councils to share their ideas in building a renewed Naga society. It will also be our humble effort to run the party without becoming a liability to the people,” the press statement added. The High Powered Committee (HPC) constituted by the state government has already recognized seven Naga political groups namely- NSCN (IM), GPRN/NSCN, NSCN (K), NNC (Non-Accordist), NNC (Accordist), FGN (Non-Accordist) and FGN (Accordist). Along with these seven groups, NSCN (R) will now be the eight group in Nagaland.
Butterflies in Nagaland to be documented
GUWAHATI, AprIL 6 (pTI): A Rapid Action Project (RAP), a first of its kind in the north east, has been initiated to document different species of butterflies by the Wildlife Trust of India in Nagaland. The project has been launched around Doyang Reservoir under Sungro Range in the state as it boasts of a high concentration of different species of butterflies, a WTI spokesman said here. The RAP will focus on sensitizing locals on butterflies that inhabit the Doyang Reservoir and urge them to protect and conserve them. Launched in association with Charities Aid Foundation, a local expert W
Oponthung Jami will carry out the project to document the various species of butterflies found there. Jami said a number of butterflies are witnessing a drastic drop owing to increasing anthropogenic activities in their natural habitats and their dwindling numbers could create a huge imbalance in the ecosystem which would be difficult to reverse. “The role that insects, especially butterflies, play in the eco-system hardly comes into the limelight. It is high time, the concerned stakeholders should initiate protection and conservation measures to sustain their population in the area,” he said.
‘Food safety is a shared responsibility’ World Health Day 2015 is on April 7 under theme-From Farm To Plate, Make Food Safe
VATICAN CITY, AprIL 6 (Ap): Pope Francis on Monday again pressed the international community to do something about the killing of Christians in several parts of the world and not “look the other way.” He has been increasingly vocal about the fate of Christians being targeted by Islamic extremists in parts of the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Addressing pilgrims and tourists in St. Peter’s Square, Francis praised those who were “sensitizing public opinion about the persecution of Christians in the world.” While not suggesting any particular course of action, he urged “concrete participation and tangible help in defense and protection of our brothers and our sisters, who are persecuted, exiled, slain, beheaded, solely for being Christian.” “I hope that the international community doesn’t stand mute and inert before such unacceptable crimes, which constitute a worrisome erosion of the most elementary human rights. I truly hope that the international community doesn’t look the other way,” the pontiff said.
Already, many of New Delhi’s 4.5 million children have reduced lung capacity, according to a study by the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute of Kolkata submitted to India’s Central Pollution Control Board two years ago — yet made public by Indian media only last week. The researchers found that, out of about 11,000 children studied over years, one-third showed lung disease or deterioration. While there is scant reliable data on respiratory illness in India, doctors
said the number of respiratory illnesses is rising and the cases they see are becoming more serious. “By 35, you tend to have lungs which start behaving like a smoker’s lung,” says Dr. Pankaj Syal, a lung specialist at PSRI Hospital in the capital. “Not only are the cases rising, we are having difficulty controlling patients’ (cases) which were easily controlled earlier on.” India’s air pollution comes mostly from coal-fired power plants, crop burning, domestic cooking with firewood or cow dung, and vehicles burning diesel fuel. Anxious to grow its economy, India has made building electricity capacity a top priority. It plans to boost solar and wind power, but also plans to triple its coal-fired electricity capacity to 450 gigawatts by 2030. India is still home to at least 300 million people with no electricity at all, while hundreds of millions have just a couple of hours a day. Bringing them all onto a 24-hour electricity grid fueled primarily by coal could jeopardize global efforts to prevent the worst effects of climate change. Modi suggested Indians would have to be more energy efficient in order to disprove international perceptions that it did not care about the environment.
WHO’s five keys to safer food offer practical guidance to vendors and consumers for handling and preparing food: • Key 1: Keep clean • Key 2: Separate raw and cooked food • Key 3: Cook food thoroughly • Key 4: Keep food at safe temperatures • Key 5: Use safe water and raw materials KoHImA, AprIL 6 (mExN): World Health Day (WHD) is celebrated each year globally on April 7. This year’s theme ‘Food Safety’ focuses on the need for safe food that is ‘free from microbes, viruses and chemicals’. As food supply becomes increasingly globalized, the need to strengthen food safety systems in and between all countries is becoming “more and more evident.” That is why the World Health Organisation (WHO) is promoting efforts to improve food safety, from farm to plate on WHD. WHD is an annual event being celebrated for years to raise awareness among people pertaining to health issues and concerns. The decision to
have a day dedicated to World health was taken at the first conference of WHO in 1948 in Geneva. According to the Family Planning Association India (FPA India), Nagaland Branch, one of the most effective WHD themes was ‘Global Polio Eradication’ which was adopted in 1995. From then, most of the countries have become free of this fatal disease whereas in other parts of the world its awareness level has increased. “World Health Day celebration focuses on increasing the life expectancy by adding good health to the lives of people and promoting healthier living habits. Youths of the new era are also targeted by this event for healthy life which
in turn makes the world healthy and free from diseases,” stated the FPA India, Nagaland Branch, in a press release today. WHD 2015 is an opportunity to alert people working in different government sectors, farmers, manufacturers, retailers, health practitioners - as well as consumers - about the importance of food safety, and the part each can play in ensuring that everyone can feel confident that the food on their plate is safe to eat. Food safety is a shared responsibility. It is important to work all along the food production chain from farmers and manufacturers to vendors and consumers. Unsafe food is linked to the deaths of an estimated 2 million people annually - including many children. Food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances is responsible for more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers. New threats to food safety are constantly emerging, and increases in travel and trade enhance the likelihood that contamination can spread internationally. In the wake of these statistics, “it’s about time we address the issue of food safety which is a growing public health concern,” noted FPA India. WHD stresses on the collaboration of every government with civil societies, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and consumers to ensure safe food, where everybody has a role to play.

over missing of a teenage girl Our Correspondent Imphal | April 6
A 48-hour state wide general strike has been called in Manipur beginning April 7 midnight over the missing of a 17 years old teenage girl who is said to have been allegedly kidnapped by one Md Afsar. Whereabouts of the girl, a resident of Gaipunam village in Imphal West, is still unknown to her family since she was reported missing on March 18 last. One Md Afsar of Top Kshetri Leikai in Imphal East has been accused of kidnapping the school girl. The girl, has gone missing since she was last seen attending a tutorial class at Lamboikhongnangkhong in Imphal West on March 12. Reports had said the teen was abducted by Md Afsar on her way to home that day.
The Revolving Door of Mizoram's Raj Bhavan Guwahati, april 6 (thE NEw iNdiaN ExprESS): The Central government has created a record of sorts by appointing seven Governors within a span of just nine months in Mizoram, making Mizos wonder if their state is a “dumping ground for unwanted Governors”. The latest to come to the hill state is West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, who has been given additional charge of Mizoram. He replaced Aziz Qureshi, who was sacked last week within 3 months of being transferred to Mizoram from Uttarakhand. The wave of sackings and transfers of the Governors has enraged Mizos so much that they took to the streets in peaceful protest. On Saturday, the day Tripathi arrived in Aizawl, the influential Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizoram Students Union) took out a protest march to ventilate their displeasure. On April 7, the Union will enforce the closure of all Central offices in the state and hoist black flags there. Protests have been planned on April 9 as well when President Pranab Mukherjee will visit the state to attend the convocation of Mizoram University. The Union will also meet the President and submit a memorandum, urging him to ensure that Governors are not frequently shunted out from the state. Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla is livid. “It is a prerogative of the Centre but I wonder if Governors should be treated like this,” he said. The saga began in July when central Government transferred Vakkom B Purushothaman to Nagaland from Mizoram. He was miffed that the Centre did not consult him and quit in protest against the decision. He was replaced by Modi’s political bête noire Kamla Beniwal, who was moved out of Gujarat. But she could remain in office for barely a month before being sent packing for alleged impropriety. Later, Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, who had the experience as Governor of Nagaland, was transferred to Mizoram. But he refused to take charge and quit up on the issuance of his transfer order. At this time, former Union Home Secretary V K Duggal, who was Governor of Manipur, was given additional charge of Mizoram. But he quit within 20 days. Subsequently, the Centre gave additional charge of the state to Meghalaya Governor K K Paul. But even he could work for just a few months and was replaced by Qureshi. Qureshi, whose term would have ended in 2017.
Meanwhile, Lamphel Police Station Officer-inCharge (OC) O Dorendro has been charged with an assault case wherein the father of the victim girl was reportedly subjected to a severe beating by him inside the police station when he went to lodge a complaint in connection with the missing of his daughter on March 22 last. Many student organizations like Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Manipur (ZSUM), All Manipur Muslim Women’s Organisation (AMMWO), All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation (AMMSO) and Zeliangrong Youth Front, Imphal East have condemned the alleged unruly act of the Lamphel police officer. The joint action com-
mittee (JAC), which has been seeking strict action against the offending police officer, announced the 48-hour Manipur wide bandh yesterday. It says the National Highway-37 will be blocked in protest if the demand of the JAC is not met after the 48-hour strike. ZSUM, meanwhile, says the Manipur Government is keeping mum on the case. The union has also urged the Chief Minister to take stringent action against the Lamphel Police Officer-in-Charge. In an unrelated incident, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has issued an order asking the Lamphel Police Station Officer-in-Charge to investigate a case in which a student was terribly tortured by a woman and her son at a boarding school near
Eroisemba Zoological Garden in Imphal West. The main accused in the case is identified as one Surjabala Devi (40). MCPCR has demanded strict punishment against all individuals involved in the crime committed against the minor student. Meanwhile, the CPI (ML) Manipur unit has said flash bandh, road blockade and strikes are not affective in putting pressure on the Government for fulfillment of demands. It says only the common people especially the daily wage earners have to bear the brunt of bandh and strikes and appealed to all groups to take up alternative protest. Manipur has been witnessing a series of strikes since the past few weeks, imposed by various JACs and pressure groups pushing for their demands.
Guwahati, april 6 (iaNS): Balloting will take place on Wednesday to elect a new Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which administers four Bodo-dominated districts in Assam. The BTC runs the administration in the districts of Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang and Udalguri, home to most of Assam's three million Bodo tribals. Security forces have drawn up an elaborate plan to ensure smooth polls, the third in a series, to the council since it was set up in 2003. Voting will take place for 40 seats. The Assam governor later nominates six members from the unrepresented communities in the region. A total of 333 candidates are contesting in 40 constituencies, up from 149 in 2010. But there are only nine women among the hopefuls. The Bodoland election assumes significance for political parties in Assam, particularly ahead of assembly elections early next year. Security arrangements have been reviewed at regular intervals, fearing that the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) might try to dis-
turb the election process. "There has been sufficient deployment of forces in all the sensitive areas," said a senior Assam Police official. Lt. Gen. Sarath Chand, chief of the army's 4 Corps based in Tezpur, visited the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) last week and reviewed the law and order situation with Assam Police officials and deputy commissioners of the four districts. "The meeting was held to assess the current security scenario and formulate plans to ensure that the BTAD remains peaceful and all probable causes which can disturb peace are dealt with an iron hand," he added. According to an election official, the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), which has been in power in the BTC since its first election in 2005, has fielded 40 candidates this time. The Bharatiya Janata Party, an emerging force, and the Congress, which rules Assam, have also fielded candidates in all the constituencies. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) headed by perfume trader Badaruddin Ajmal, which also has support base in some of
Dimapur
the belts dominated by Muslims, has fielded eight candidates. The People's Confederation of Democratic Rights (PCDR), a newly floated conglomeration of various communities living in BTAD, has also supported independent candidates in all the constituencies. Besides, there are six candidates fielded by the Asom Gana Parishad, seven by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), one by the CPI and 151 independents. The BTC was established under the sixth schedule of the Constitution. It came into existence as a fallout of a settlement signed between the Indian government and the erstwhile Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) militant group on February 10, 2003. The BTC was born after the surrender of BLT cadres. Its chief, Hagrama Mohilary, formed the interim government in the council. The first election to the BTC was held in 2005, and the BPF led by Mohilary took power by winning a majority. The BPF could retain power in the second election to the council held in 2010 and formed the government.
NDA government talks tough on WAD conducts health camp in Thoubal Northeast India insurgency, terror Guwahati, april 6 (Et BurEau): Probably first time in a decade, the Centre is talking tough on militancy in Northeast India. This is a parading shift in the centre's approach to insurgency besieged Northeast India. Narendra Modi led NDA government has adopted a policy of "no talk with militant outfits indulging in violence and only action on them" while the UPA government's policy had been eschews violence and come for talks. Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) militant's orgy of violence on Adivasis and retaliatory action by the Adivasis has left over 80 people dead. Union Home minister, Rajnath Singh during his recent visit to Assam has outlined the policy of government when he said there will no talks with such kind of terrorist outfits. This is an act of terror and only
action will take against those terrorist. Singh on Monday called up chief minister, Tarun Gogoi and took stock of situation. Singh assured Centre's assistance for the rebuilding the houses and return of camp inmates. MHA is continuously monitoring the situation of Assam where violence has displaced over 1.76 lakh people. This is first time that homegrown outfits which were prefixed as "militants" are now paraphrased as terrorist. The tough stand of Centre has seen Army swinging in action and fanning out along the Indo Bhutan and AssamArunachal Pradesh border. Two linkmen connected with last week massacres were arrested in Assam. In 2003 NDA government in major diplomatic success along with Bhutanese army cleared the Himalayan kingdom of the Northeastern ultras.
Songbijit's faction has been running parallel government in different areas of Assam, killing and abducting people. Several tea planters in the Sontipur district are forced to pay ransom annually. Priya Basumatary (16 years old) in August this year was killed by anti talk NDFB in full public view in Chirang. The militants suspected that Priya passed the information to police regarding the presence of militants following which five hardcore NDFB(S) militants were killed in an encounter. She was shot in front of the villagers. Later they distributed the videos of this gruesome killing. NDFB(S) has killed police officers; abducted senior polices working in PSUs. Centre has already decided to entrust the NIA with the responsibility of probing into four incidents of killings by the NDFB(S) in the districts of Sonitpur and Kokrajhar.
thouBal april 6 (MExN): The Women Action for Development (WAD) organized a one day free medical camp at Tokpaching village under Thoubal District on April 5. Conducted with the support of Actionaid and ECHO, the camp was in continuation of series of health camp under the project titled “Humanitarian Support to People Affected by Conflict in Manipur” and aimed at
bringing health awareness to the people affected by various conflicts in Manipur, a press note from WAD stated. At least 170 villagers including 76 women and 56 children from Tokpaching, Chingjao, Sarik konjin, Umathel and other adjourning villages benefited from the camp. Major health problems were abdomen pain, skin decease, hypertension, body ache, gen-
eral illness, cough, stomach burning; loose muscle, chest pain, dizziness etc. A medical team including Dr. Th. Binita, Dr. H. Morish and Dr. H. Kherojit from Kakching Khunpou Primary Health Center along with nurses provided their services. Free health checkup and distribution of various medicines in free of cost were main service provided during the health camp.

Jaitley urges industry help in honest decision-making new Delhi, april 6 (ians): Errors in decision-making and corruption in decision-making need to be looked at differently, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Monday in a reference to probes against some leading industrialists and retired bureaucrats for graft. “The language of the Prevention of Corruption Act is deterring a large number of civil servants from taking decisions,” Jaitley said here addressing the national conference of industry chamber Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on the many challenges before the government. “The Law Commission also has, in its recommendations, spoken of this requiring a re-look,” he added. “I urge industry to set up working group to assist on the debate on the changes required about separating error in decision making from corruption in decision-making,” the finance minister said. He mentioned in this connection a proposal in his first full budget presented in February that seeks to substitute a regime of prior permissions for business by a regulatory mechanism that intervenes only when guidelines are violated. A committee has been set up to help institute such a system, Jaitley added.
RBI official calls for caution on foreign investor debt limits MuMbai, april 6 (reuters): India needs to proceed cautiously in fully opening up its debt markets to foreign investors, given the need to first tackle issues such as the large government borrowing and capital controls, executive director G. Padmanabhan said in a speech last week. Padmanabhan also raised concerns over the unhedged foreign currency exposure by Indian borrowers in offshore debt, saying it raised “systemic concerns.” The executive director, whose last day at the RBI is at the end of May, spoke at an Indian foreign exchange dealers’ association meeting on Friday. The speech was uploaded on Monday. Padmanabhan cited “structural frictions” in India’s bond and currency markets, including large government borrowings, as reasons that justified proceeding “in a non-disruptive manner” on removing debt limits for foreign investors. Foreign investors can now buy up to $30 billion of government bonds and $50 billion of corporate bonds.
Mercedes-Benz bags three top World Car Awards wellington, april 6 (ani): Mercedes-Benz has hogged all the limelight in the World Car Awards at the New York Auto Show this year by bagging three top awards, a report said. While the company’s C-Class drove grabbed the overall World Car of the Year award, the S-Class Coupe was named the World Luxury Car of the Year and the Mercedes-AMG GT picked up the World Performance Car gong, reported Stuff.co.nz. Mercedes C-Class made its way from an initial entry list of 24 vehicles from around the world to a short list of 12 and then outdid the Ford Mustang and the Volkswagen Passat in the list of three finalists to bag the top position. To be eligible, the vehicles had to become available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning January 1, 2014 and ending May 31, 2015. An international jury panel, comprising 75 top-notch automotive journalists from 22 countries around the world, selects vehicles and votes on them. Each member on the panel is appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. Mercedes-Benz was the only car manufacturer to make it to the final round with five vehicles.
Facebook rolls out ‘new guidelines’ lonDon, april 6 (ani): Facebook has launched a new set of guidelines in its “privacy basics portal” in an attempt to make its complicated privacy settings more accessible for users. The expanded portal now includes newly created 11 visual and interactive guidelines, which cover topics on how to ensure information is kept secure and how to recognise attempts to steal information, The Independent reported. The “How to keep your account secure” section will offer advice to users on creating a strong password, identifying suspicious activity and will also tell them what to do if their account is hacked. Melissa Luu-Van, a product manager at Facebook, said in the company’s blog post that the new guidelines were launched to help millions of people who had questions about the social media website’s security tools. She noted that online threats were a growing concern for people and the social media giant hoped that the platform would help users better understand how to stay safe and secure on Facebook. The new content on the revamped guidelines is available in 40 languages and easily accessible on phones, tablets and computers. It allows users to go through the settings step-by-step and understand the changes.

Out of the total GMV, the etailer makes around 5% to 20% depending on the category. In the fashion category Flipkart/Myntra’s biggest rivals remain Amazon and Snapdeal. Amazon recently started the fashion category in India, whereas Snapdeal too is on course for a $1 billion in sales under the fashion category.

Toothy affair: Are your teeth safe? Morung Express News Mokokchung | April 6
“Oral cavity is the gateway of our health. We tend to ignore it, but the truth is that diseases manifest in our mouth and there is a relation between oral cavity and systematic diseases,” states Dr. N. Moa Jamir, senior dental surgeon at Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, Mokokchung. As the world commemorates ‘World Health Day’ on April 7 under the slogan “From Farm to Plate, Make food Safe,” let’s relate how safe we are with the teeth that chew the food. “We give very least importance to the mouth. We, especially the Nagas, tend to neglect it as if it is not a part of our
own body. In doing so, we neglect the importance of our teeth,” Dr. N. Moa Jamir further asserts. Out of 90 patients who visit the hospital, 50 percent of the patients’ teeth are beyond repair, he says, adding that happens because the patients tend to seek the doctor only when there is a toothache and when the pain becomes unbearable. According to dentists in Mokokchung, only five people out of hundred take dental care seriously and visit the dentist every six months. “The extraction of upper tooth will affect the eyes or the brain, or the extraction of tooth by traditional healers who has the capacity to root out worms from the teeth are all
misconceptions that we Nagas held so dearly,” states Dr. O. Ayimba, a dental surgeon who has been running a dental clinic in Mokokchung for eighteen years now. With proper treatment from dentist there is no room for side effects and no healer can root out worms big enough that can be visible to our naked eyes, he adds. Oral hygiene is the only way to prevent dental diseases and prevent oral cancer. The love of tobacco and its product among the Naga people is the main cause for oral cancer. Out of hundred adult patients, sixty percent of male patients and forty percent of adult female patients have dental issues due to tobacco use. “If this trend continues
there will be more and more cases of oral cancer among the Naga people,” warns Dr. N. Moa Jamir. “Brushing our teeth twice daily isn’t enough to maintain oral hygiene. We need to floss our teeth and also use mouth wash. But the majority of our people are ignorant to flossing while mouth wash are nothing but fresheners that models use only in advertisements!” To maintain a healthy oral hygiene, one needs to keep away from sweets and sugary foods and abstain from tobacco and its products, the dentists advise, while stressing on maintaining healthy food habits and eating more fruits and fibrous foods as they not only help in keeping a
good health, but also good teeth. “We will notice that people who maintain a healthy oral hygiene are sound in health and healthy,” Dr. N. Moa Jamir adds. In the recent years, people have become more aware of the importance of oral hygiene, but more needs to be done to educate the people. The tooth affair with the dentist is expensive, but it becomes more expensive when it is neglected. As the dental saying goes, “The toothbrush doesn’t remove six months of tartar 30 minutes before the appointment,” one needs to care and maintain a healthy oral hygiene. Safe teeth to chew the safe foods should be the way of maintaining a good health on World Health Day this year.

The Naga spirit
A
t this juncture when Nagas seem to be getting further divided, there is an urgent need for vibrant and purposeful leadership that is able to reflectively process constructive criticism and to respond effectively and justly while representing the people’s genuine interests. Our history shows that there was no shortage of leaders in the traditional Naga context. The very nature of community life ensured that every individual was a responsible human being who contributed towards the common good. Through being stewards to the community everyone cared for each other’s well being. Today, this sense of stewardship and community responsibility is no longer felt and valued as it was in the past. Now, the negative notions of individualism have begun eroding the notion of community along with the unique contributions of its individual members. These transitions from our traditional Naga context of shared responsibility and mutuality are evident in the absence of purposeful leadership in present day Nagaland. As the community values and positive individuality have been pushed aside, the notion of individualism has increased competition and generated more friction in how Nagas relate to one another. Subsequently, one of its many consequences is that existing leaders – State politicians, Civil Society, Traditional, as well as, ‘national workers’ – no longer understand, listen to and communicate to the Naga spirit. This departure is evident in current day Nagaland as the leaders are no longer people-centered as past leaders were. The critical gap in understanding has widened between the leaders and the people. Tragically, this gap has been central in defining their perception of each other. And, because perception is based on politics they fail miserably in understanding each other’s intention. Invariably, the focus seems to be centered on posturing, rather than on recognizing and responding to each other’s needs as human beings. Purposeful leaders are needed that have goodwill for their fellow human beings and a perceptiveness or insight that enables them to respond in principled ways, flexibly, yet appropriately depending on what the situation requires. Nagas need leaders who are open and willing to publically acknowledge wrong doings and saying ‘Sorry’. Nagas need leaders who can humbly and sincerely recognize their own limitations, as well as, have the courage to elicit public opinion and involve the people in the process of policy formation. Nagas need leaders who have an all-encompassing expansive vision that revolves around improving the lives of all people, not just their kin, clan or their village. The Naga spirit is generous and forgiving. Nagas will embrace leaders with the Naga spirit who are willing to humble themselves and seek counsel from them. Nagas need leaders with a vision for the common good that can guide the people out of the present condition of indifference and apathy, and inspire new imagination, one that can rekindle the spirit of life once again. In reality, the majority is caught up in the cycle of day to day survival, so leaders are needed that can empower and catalyze the people break its inertia and trapping nature at this juncture. At the end of the day in a multi-cultural and diverse society such as the Nagas, we need leaders who can firmly address the prevailing ‘isms’ and demonstrate their relevancy to the people and the conditions, thereby restoring our Naga spirit.

There’s a Time for Everything
What does God say? Read Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 Some people define God’s calling in terms of roles or profession. For example, they assume that a pastor should do only pastoral works all his life and nothing else. In one of Jesus’ parables, a priest and a Levite thought it that way. So, they wouldn’t step outside of their priestly profession to help the traveler who was beaten up by some robbers (Luke 10:25-37). The real servant of God in the story was the most unlikely person: the Samaritan who took care of the wounded traveler. Calling to service is fulfilling God’s purposes by assuming whatever roles or activities it may take as a means. For example, David was called to serve God’s purpose by taking up various roles at different times in his life (Acts 13:36). That is, he played the roles of a shepherd boy, a musician, a soldier, and a king. Samuel was a priest, a prophet, a deliverer, a judge and a king-maker. Nehemiah was a slave, a cup-bearer, a construction supervisor and a governor. As for our Lord Jesus, He is a Prophet, a Priest and a King. The American Experiment A little over a hundred years after the first settlement of the Pilgrims in American, the moral condition of the English colonies were at an extreme low. For instance, the New England colony that was to be a “city on the hill” became very materialistic and worldly. Most of the people no longer followed the strict Puritan teachings. Then came Jonathan Edwards, the great revivalist, preaching throughout the settlements around 1734. He stressed on the need for immediate repentance to receive the grace of God. The revival began in his church, first among the youths before spreading to all the churches in the colonies. These churches in the colonies became a voice of freedom, stirring fires of liberty by telling the colonies that the British government was usurping their God-given rights and violating the laws of God. Indeed, the Christian ministers turned the colonial resistance into a sacred cause. They not only preached this from the pulpits, but they also served as military chaplains, took up arms, and led troops into battle. In 1775, for example, Lutheran Pastor John Peter Muhlenberg concluded his sermon with these words: “In the language of the Holy Writ, there is a time for all things. There is a time to preach and a time to fight. And now is the time to fight.” He then threw off his clerical robes to reveal the uniform of a Revolutionary Army officer. That afternoon, at the head of three hundred men, he marched off to join General George Washington’s troops. Okay, so now what? Are you limiting yourself in a single career box? Get out of it sometimes. Remember, there should be a time for other things too. Taken from the book “Breakfast with the King: The 100-Day Devotional” by Mazie Nakhro

Life’s Work: Garry Kasparov
G
human qualities.
arry Kasparov was the world’s top chess player for 20 years. Trained in the Soviet system, he’s become a mentor to younger players, an ardent promoter of the sport and a vocal critic of corruption in both the World Chess Federation and the Russian government.
Q: After your loss to IBM’s Deep Blue, you tried computer-assisted chess. What did those games teach you about effective collaboration between man and machine? A: The brute force of calculation isn’t enough – human intuition is an integral part of successful decision-making. Chess provides an ideal field for this experiment. You can play many, many games to figure out the best form of cooperation.
Q: What can people in business learn from the best chess players? A: In chess, soccer, baseball, business, politics – God forbid, war – we make decisions. Some are good, some not so good. The way to improve is to look back and analyze them. Many people think that if something worked yesterday and is still working today, it will work tomorrow. That’s wrong, because people on the losing side will come up with a new strategy. I stayed on top for 20 years because I knew that even if you win, there are things to learn. There’s no such thing as a perfect game. Not resting on your laurels is a very important lesson. Q: How do you analyze your opponents? A: In chess, it’s easy. You look at their games in the same way you do your own: He does this, he does that, he likes this, he doesn’t like that. Even if two champions are roughly at the same level, there are certain positions where one feels more comfortable. So you use your opening strategy to push your opponent into uncomfortable territory. Q: What has helped you more – natural aptitude or practice and preparation? A: Without natural aptitude, you wouldn’t go anywhere. But working hard is also part of talent. Always trying to be at the cutting edge of chess was important to me. I wanted not just to win the game or impress my opponent but also to make sure I was learning something. Q: How did your early rivalry with Anatoly Karpov help you? A: To discover what you’re capable of, you need strong – or even better – opponents. It’s like an iron in the fire: When pressed at a very high temperature, it either breaks or turns into steel. The first match with Karpov wasn’t just long. I was trailing five to nil, so he needed only one game to finish me off. I survived, and eventually it was five to three. Karpov got really exhausted psychologically, so they stopped the match. I demonstrated to myself and to others that I had huge resources. I learned that everything was in my hands. Q: What advice do you give the people
Q: You retired at the height of your chess career. Why? A: It was all about making a difference. What else could I do for the game of chess? Win a few more tournaments? Play for a few more years? There were many changes in my life at the time – I got married, we were starting a new life, I’d been building my career as a speaker, I had a book coming out – so for me it was like a global transition. I felt my energy could be used more productively on something other than simply playing chess.
Garry Kasparov you coach? A: There’s this conventional wisdom that it’s possible to give universal advice – a tip. But we’re all different. Your decision-making process is as unique as your fingerprints or your DNA. Something that works for you may be counterproductive for me. So you have to look inside. Some of us are more aggressive; some of us are more defensive. Some tennis players prefer to stay on the back line; some have a very powerful serve and rush the net. Both can be No. 1. You have to understand who you are, know what you’re capable of and what you’re not, and then try to construct a game – or a deal or a campaign – in which your superior qualities will be factors and your disadvantages will not be displayed. Remember that no matter how much time you spend in preparation, at the end of the day your key decisions will be made under time pressure, which means you’ll act on your gut feelings. If you’re defensive, you won’t be able to make an attacking move. At the climax you don’t go against your nature. So make sure to play your own game. The person who’s more skill-
ful in creating the right environment will be triumphant. Q: How do you decide whom to coach? A: The first was Magnus Carlsen. As he was on the rise, I was quite impressed by his abilities. It was a joy to work with him, because his playing style is more like Karpov’s. He’s a more intuitive, strategic player, while I’m more tactical and aggressive. It was good for him, because he learned how to look at the position through my eyes. I also worked with Hikaru Nakamura, the best American player, for a year – that was fun – and twice a year I do sessions through my foundation with the best U.S. kids ages 10 to 16. In the Soviet Chess School I benefited from lessons from Mikhail Botvinnik, and I think it’s still important for young players to hear from great players of the past. You can’t learn by just looking at a computer screen and pushing buttons or moving the mouse. You also need to hear a human explanation of the nature of the game, the rationale of certain openings, the ideas behind the moves. Everybody has access to the same computers. So if you want to be at the cutting edge, you have to use your
Q: Your opposition to Vladimir Putin has left you in exile. Why do you persist? A: I’m critical of any dictatorship, and his is the most dangerous: one man who wants to stay in power forever, has nuclear weapons and is staking his popularity on foreign aggression. There isn’t the balanced bureaucratic cushion you see in China, where there’s an interest against very dramatic policy shifts. I had no choice but to leave Russia in 2013. House arrest was probably the best scenario I could have hoped for. But I believe I can do a lot by publishing articles, speaking out, giving interviews. Putin is no longer a Russian problem. He’s a global problem. Q: Turning to a different kind of politics, you recently lost a bid to become president of the World Chess Federation. What did you learn from that experience? A: Unfortunately, we cannot depart from Putin, because right now the Kremlin controls the Federation. The institution has 182 national branches and leaders that act like emissaries – visiting world leaders, talking about some chess projects, but at the end of the day, doing something for Putin. I thought that we could reform the organization, depoliticize and decentralize it, and make it more of a giant social network, with chess for education as its key project. But fighting Putin’s machine was an uphill battle. Officials from every Russian Embassy were mobilized to court votes against me. I tried because I believe that chess deserves better leadership.
A new kind of internet pirate What's stopping people from using apps M like Periscope and Meerkat to livestream
eerkat and Periscope made livestreaming hip again—at least for a few weeks, before much of the hype died down. After all, both are tools for broadcasting what’s happening to the streamer in real time, which often means sharing the mundane goings-on of everyday life (think the Periscoping of fridges, for example) that can get old fast. But livestreaming apps could be useful for broadcasting more than just fridges and daily experiences; they can show breaking news (as was the case on the scene of a seven-alarm fire in New York's East Village last week), sponsored events, or, to take it a step further, copyrighted material like TV shows and films. It's not an issue the apps have encountered yet—the lowquality video would make extended viewing experiences uncomfortable, and there are plenty more sophisticated ways people finagle illegal access to art—but as the companies behind the apps grow, users could potentially grant other users access to, say, premium channels like HBO, by opening Meerkat or Periscope, pointing the smartphone at the episode of Game of Thrones airing live, and streaming the channel. So what's stopping someone from doing so? "Practically speaking? Nothing," says Rebecca Tushnet, a copyright law professor at Georgetown University. "There are very limited means to prevent this." Those means include tracking down users who repeatedly post copyrighted material and shutting down their accounts. But usually when it comes to dealing with copyright infringement, the measures a company takes come after the content has already made it through. YouTube, for
video they don't own? Not much shirley liapr The Atlantic
example, removes videos that include copyrighted material once it receives a Digital Millennium Copyright Act complaint. Then it notifies the user, leaving it up to that person to decide what to do with the removed video. In turn, companies holding the copyright can use tools like Content ID to find videos that include their copyrighted materials. YouTube even has a handy video explaining this entire process with puppets: Part of this process is thanks to the long history of copyright issues that have cropped up with broadcasting and sharing content. In 1984, the Supreme Court case Universal Studios vs. Sony Corporation of America—popularly known as the Betamax case—nearly made it illegal to tape TV shows. (Justices deemed it legal as long as the taping could be considered fair use.) In 2001, Napster lost a landmark case over copyright infringement, as the court found the company stored the copyrighted MP3 files users were sharing. Of course, Meerkat and Periscope are different: They let users livestream, not upload content after it's been recorded. And that “complicates these matters even a bit more," says Bren-
ton Malin, a professor of communication at the University of Pittsburgh, "in that the streaming content need not be stored on the computer of a streaming user—making it still harder to track down assumed copyright violations.” So what can Meerkat and Periscope do if a user streams copyrighted material and later catches the attention of the owner? They'll likely do what YouTube does: Remove the content if it's streaming, and notify the alleged infringer. For users who unwittingly stream copyrighted material (a TV showing a film in the background, a snippet of a song playing, etc.), the process would remain the same. “If you’re a startup like these companies,” Kembrew McLeod, a copyright law professor at University of Iowa, says, “you want to monetize, so you’re not going to ignore a takedown notice.” Which is why both Meerkat and Periscope have clear guidelines in their terms of service addressing copyright infringement. Below, from Meerkat: Meerkat respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects users of the Services to do the same. We will respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement that comply
WRITE-WING
with applicable law and are properly provided to us… We reserve the right to remove Content alleged to be infringing without prior notice and at our sole discretion. In appropriate circumstances, Meerkat will also terminate a user’s account if the user is determined to be a repeat infringer. “Meerkat’s value is in the conversation it creates, not in the content itself,” Meerkat's Community Director Ryan Cooley told me. “We’re a young company, so we fully acknowledge that we aren’t prepared for every single type of use case, but we’re flexible and we’re ready to take it on.” Cooley says the app hasn’t found any instances of people livestreaming copyrighted content—and the company doesn't expect to see this happen too often. “It’s on our radar, but certainly nobody has complained and seen it being abused in that way,” he said. “Nobody has created a live experience [of watching a TV show] that's so compelling that somebody’s going to sit at home on their phone rather than go experience it.” (Periscope did not respond to an interview request.) Besides, people have enough ways to get copyrighted material elsewhere without needing someone to point a smartphone camera at a television screen. As Tushnet, the Georgetown professor, points out, those who want to pirate episodes of Game of Thrones will likely and more easily find better quality versions of the episodes scattered online. That said, someone somewhere will probably still use Meerkat and Periscope to livestream shows or films. "People are going to do this just because they can, because that's what people do," Tushnet said, "but I can't imagine [using a cellphone camera] is a pleasant way to watch something."

Bangladesh ‘secular’ writers are fearful after 2nd blogger is slain Julhas alam

he writer, a thin young man who fears the growing interweaving of religion and politics in Bangladesh, knows his turn could come next. What happened earlier this week, when the second secularist blogger in less than a month was hacked to death in the streets of the capital, made it clear he wasn't safe. "Anytime they can hit me or my like-minded friends," said Ananya Azad, a 25-year-old blogger who has written pieces that were critical of Islamic fundamentalism and politics driven by religion. He quit his job as a newspaper columnist and stopped writing blogs in recent months after receiving numerous threats, but still posts critical comments on Facebook. Ananya says he's thinking about fleeing the country and spends much of his time indoors these days. "They don't hesitate to kill in the name of their beliefs," he said. "I'm an easy target for the fanatics." Bangladesh, a majority Muslim nation long seen as insulated from the most fervent strains of militant Islam, has seen that reputation crack amid an increasingly bloody divide between secular bloggers and conservative Islamist groups. In many ways, the divide is clear: The bloggers want authorities to ban religion-based politics, while the Islamists are pressing for blasphemy laws so that nobody can undermine Islam's holy book, the prophet or basic pillars of being a Muslim. In a crowded nation of 160 million, whose recent political history has been dominated by a bitter power struggle that regularly spills into street violence, many fear that religion could further destabilize the situation. Islam is Bangladesh's state religion, but the country is governed by secular laws based on British common law. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has repeatedly said she will not give in to religious extremism. Yet over the last decade or so, extreme interpretations of Islam have steadily gained ground here. "These attacks are not stray incidents," said Abdur Rashid, a retired army general and expert on national security. "They are well planned and strings are being pulled in some quarters eager to control the future of Bangladesh." He believes Islamist political parties are orchestrating the attacks to further polarize the country and expand their influence. "Some political parties, which have a distant desire to come to power in Bangladesh, are either directly or indirectly connected with this radicalization process," he said. The past few weeks have seen a spike in radical attacks. First, a prominent Bangladeshi-American blogger and writer, Avijit Roy, was hacked to death by unidentified attackers in late February while he was walking with his wife. Roy bled to death while his wife, also a blogger, was critically injured. Roy was an atheist who promoted secularism through his blog, books and newspaper articles. A previously unknown Muslim militant group, Ansar Bangla 7, claimed responsibility for the attack. On Monday, 27-year-old Oyasiqur Rahman Babu was attacked in daylight as he left his house. Unlike Roy, who had been on the radar of radical Islamists and had regularly received death threats, Babu was a low-profile online activist. Still, his Facebook page includes a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad from the French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo, and he had openly questioned writings in the Quran. Two of the three men believed to have attacked Babu were caught by passers-by and handed over to the police. A third man fled the scene. The two captured men, students at local madrasas, told police they neither knew Babu nor were familiar with his writings. Instead, they said a fourth man had showed them Babu's photographs and some of his writings, and then asked them to kill him. They followed the instructions, they said, because they believed it was their duty as Mus-

f a young woman, before her marriage or after it, is found to have had sexual relations with another man not her betrothed, she is sentenced to be stoned to death. By contrast, a man who rapes or seduces a young girl usually must pay a fine to her father, and offer to marry her himself. This punishment, ordained by God, is not confined to the ideologues of Islamic State. It is to be found in the holiest books of Jews and Christians: in a part of the Jewish Torah, known to Christians as Old Testament’s book of Deuteronomy. The Jewish literary critic Adam Kirsch writes that “in Deuteronomy, we find the same kind of panic about female sexuality, the same need to control women’s feelings and behavior…(while) under Talmudic law, (a woman) is not a legally competent individual, but the responsibility of a man.” The Talmud is a compendium of centuries of Jewish thought and commentary on the Torah. Why, then, should those born within the cultures of the two older monotheistic faiths — Judaism, the oldest, and Christianity — recoil in horror from the obedience of some Muslims to these commands of God, since our cultures contain the same observances and our cultures’ holy figures approved them? Because both Christianity and Judaism were profoundly changed by the Reformation and the European Enlightenment. The Enlightenment’s apostles included large figures from the Christian tradition — David Hume, Immanuel Kant and Rene Descartes; and from the Jewish, in Baruch Spinoza and Moses Mendelsohn. They, and a legion of others, thought “freedom and toleration were … essential to the pursuit of enquiry, both religious and secular.” Their belief became, especially in France, a cause, a militant proclamation of freedom of thought and of publication, a definition of the rights of man. “Man” to a degree meant also “wom-

logging has become a dangerous profession in Bangladesh. In February, a Bangladeshi-American computer engineer and founder of the secularist website Mukto-Mona, Avijit Roy, was hacked to death in a Dhaka street. Then this week, an atheist blogger named Washiqur Rahman was murdered in a similarly bloody attack. Both were killed for their views on religion. In Bangladesh, we take pride in defining ourselves against the country we could have been. Between 1947, when the British left India, and 1971, when we became an independent country, we were part of Pakistan. Now, whenever there is news of a tragic event involving violent extremism in Pakistan, we say to ourselves: That could have been us. Thank goodness we are no longer a part of that country, we say. That country is full of religious bigots. Look at the way it treats minorities. Look at the brave citizens who have gone up against the fundamentalists and lost. But now we have to think not about the country we could have been, but the one we are. Which is this: a country where three bloggers have been murdered in the last two years. A country where a writer’s books were withdrawn from sale because of death threats against a distributor, and where the writer himself, Mr. Roy, can be brutally assassinated in broad daylight. Mr. Roy’s murder was heavy with symbolism. He had come to Dhaka for the publication of his new book at the Ekushey book fair, which takes place on the grounds of Dhaka University — historically, the center of the independence movement. The campus was where the Pakistani Army and allied militias chose to attack at the outset of its 1971 genocidal pogrom of minorities and pro-independence intellectuals. On Feb. 26, Mr. Roy had just left the university, and was on his way home, when machetewielding assailants set upon him and his wife. In 2013, the blogger Rajib Haider was stabbed to death a few feet from his home. His connection with the events of 1971 was not the university or the book fair, but the Shahbag movement, a protest incited by the war crimes trials of 2013. Mr. Haider had been prominent among those calling for the death penalty for the proPakistan Islamists convicted of atrocities during the war of independence. Mr. Rahman, the latest victim, was the quietest of the three. He was not particularly educated. He had not, as Mr. Roy had, published books and articles. He mostly wrote posts on Facebook. Why was he targeted? Why, among all the other bloggers, was his name the one that came up? The police believe that his death was commissioned. Two madrasa students who were arrested at the scene have since confessed, according to reports, to having carried out the murder because of Mr. Rahman’s “writings against Islam.” (A total of four men have now been
lims, according to police. Islamist political parties have denied any involvement in the killings. Writing has never been a particularly safe profession here. Ananya's father was attacked a decade ago for his writings against Muslim extremism, and journalists are often targeted by political thugs. Bangladesh ranks 146 out of 180 countries on the press freedom index of the group Reporters Without Borders. The attacks come as Bangladesh grapples with an ongoing political standoff over contentious elections last year boycotted by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies. The opposition has staged violent protests and shut down roads with an often-bloody transportation strike. For more than a decade, Bangladeshi politics have been dominated by battles for power between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her archrival, former Prime Minister
charged in connection with the killing.) In the end, it was the digital technology used by the victims that may have brought about their deaths. Both Mr. Roy and Mr. Rahman had already received death threats via social media. Perhaps the person who engineered their deaths did a search for “Bangladeshi atheist blogger” to find a list of people who oppose fundamentalism, champion secularism or declare themselves to be atheist. The murderers admitted that they had never heard of Mr. Rahman or read his blog. The space between the killers and their victims is the distance of nanoseconds, the time it takes to execute a search. In some senses, their deaths are random and impersonal. But if the technology of targeting the victims is new, the technology of killing them is ancient and intimate. Mr. Rahman’s face was so mutilated by the attack that he could be identified only by his voter-ID card. As they did last month for Mr. Roy, protesters held a rally and vigil for Mr. Rahman at Dhaka University on Monday evening. It seems we are bound to return again and again to the site that symbolizes our independence movement, to warn against a future that obliterates the values our country was founded on. At the rally, campaigners accused the authorities of not doing enough to safeguard freedom of expression. In many ways, the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League party has cracked down hard on fundamentalism, banning terrorist organizations and affirming secularism as one of the pillars of the state. But Ms. Hasina’s government is distracted by its battle with opposition parties. So far this year, more than 100 people have died in protests. If we are to truly recover from this recent spate of violence, Bangladesh’s mainstream religious parties and their allies must take a stand against the murders of the three bloggers. They must say: Not in our name. We wait for them to condemn these attacks with the same vehemence with which they complain of injustices against Muslims elsewhere in the world. I fear it won’t happen. Mr. Roy and Mr. Rahman were the victims of murderous thugs, but they were also the victims of a poisonous political climate, in which secularists and Islamists, observant Muslims and atheists, Jamaat-e-Islami and the Awami League are pitted against one another. They battle for votes, for power, for the ideological upper hand. There seems to be no common ground. A month after Mr. Roy’s murder, his wife, Rafida Bonya Ahmed, wrote to protest the government’s lack of action: “This turning of a blind eye,” she said, “feeds both the public’s sense of cynicism and the terrorists’ sense of invincibility.” Now that there is yet another casualty, and a clear sense of the larger forces at play, the government must act decisively. In this fight for the soul of Bangladesh, the progressive voice must win over the bigot’s. Tahmima Anam, a writer and anthropologist, is the author of the novel “A Golden Age.”
Khaleda Zia, who heads the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Media reports say radical Muslim groups have compiled lists of bloggers and writers they view as anti-Islam. Ananya, who regularly meets with others concerned about the rise of fundamentalism, says his name is on some of those lists. "Fundamentalists glorify Allah, but they think nothing about lying. When I try to stand for truth, they want to kill me," he said in a March 12 Facebook post. Many of those under threat, including Ananya, demand the banning of Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh's largest Islamic party and a key ally of the Nationalists. Ananya is also among those who called for a senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader to be executed for his role in war crimes during Bangladesh's bloody war of independence in 1971. "I can't rely on the system for my protection," Ananya said. "We are frustrated, my friends don't see a liberal Bangladesh where free thought will be encouraged and protected."
Best chance for peace: Islamic Reformation John Lloyd
Source: Reuters an” — but far from completely. The idea of male supremacy continues worldwide. Only under the influence of liberal and socialist reformers, emancipatory movements and feminism did (some) cultures recognize real, substantial equality of the sexes — rarely completely. Islam did not join the renaissance, the rebirth, of Judaic and Christian cultures that began at the end of the 1500s and then evolved over centuries. Islam has within it millions of devotees who are liberal in their thoughts and actions, and who believe that nations should be secular, tolerating all religions and those with none. But the religion and the commentators on it do not lend them support: the religion still, in theory and in much of its practice, aspires to be the spine to a nation’s politics, the guide for its judiciary. Last month, two powerful voices — one Jewish, one a Muslim breakaway — have been raised to give voice to the same belief: that until Islam undergoes its own rebirth, in which its divine commands are generally allowed to give way to secular, enlightenment practices, the majority of Muslim moderates will be held hostage by the minority of Muslim extremists. Benny Morris is professor of history at the University of the Negev: he is the most prominent member of the revisionist historians of the 1980s who broke with Zionist orthodoxy and who wrote a searing, detailed book about the Arab-Israeli war of 1948, and the expulsion of hundreds of
thousands of Palestinians. An ardent leftist, he became a much more conservative figure, seeing in the failure of the negotiations in the early 2000s between Israel and the Palestinian leadership proof that the Palestinians would never agree to accept the existence of Israel as a Jewish state. At a talk in London, Morris poured scorn on those Western leaders – As President Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron — who argued the attacks on the magazine Charlie Hebdo in January had “nothing to do with the true religion of Islam.” Islamist violence, Morris said, is perpetrated in the name of Islam. Denying it doesn’t promote good community relations. It obscures a real problem that must be faced. Morris’ other view — that all Muslims, militant or moderate, “hated” the West — seems to me to be wrong. I asked him if he thought the Palestinian Israelis were biding their time before turning on their Jewish fellow citizens? He replied that the Israeli government’s demonizing of them was wrong. Instead, the government must do all in its powers to bring Israeli Arabs into full citizenship. Yet if they are suffused with hatred, how would that help? The “renegade” Muslim I spoke of earlier is Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Her journey began with escape a forced marriage in Somalia, through the Netherlands and to the United States, where she now lives. She has also traveled from being a devout Muslim to a
challenger of Islam’s basic precepts. She has been the subject of powerful memoirs, such as The Caged Virgin and Nomad and has been forced to live behind armed protection. Last month, she wrote that “the theological warrant for intolerance and violence is embedded in (Muslims’) own religious texts. It simply will not do for Moslems to claim that their religion has been ‘hijacked’ by extremists. The killers of Islamic state and Nigeria’s Boko Haram cite the same religious texts that every other Muslim in the world considers sacrosanct.” Judaism and Christianity, she writes “gradually consigned the violent passages of their own sacred texts to the past” so that extremism in both is confined to the fringes. “Regrettably in Islam it is the other way around: it is those seeking religious reform who are the fringe element.” Hirsi Ali is a woman of notable bravery; one who cares deeply about the religion she felt forced to leave. She ardently wishes to engage those whom she calls “Mecca Muslims” — devout and peaceful men and women, “the majority from Casablanca to Jakarta” in “a dialogue about the meaning and practice of their faith.” The reformation of Islam, she writes, would benefit not only the faithful: Westerners, too, “have an enormous stake in how the struggle over Islam plays out.” An Islamic reformation would be painful, surely internally violent — as reformation’s various phases were in Christianity. It would mean the sharp diminution of the power of the Imams; frontal challenges to the moral framework of millions, and to the power of religiously based dynasties, like the House of Saud. But if reform, and opening a space for free, unafraid debate, is to move from the fringes to the center and allow the majority to encompass both secular citizenship and devout practice, this hard transition is necessary — especially for Muslims themselves, the first and most numerous victims of extremism.

“What the Country Needs Is Dirtier Fingernails and Cleaner Minds”
“P
oets are destined to be extinct”. I don’t know how true the statement is but one thing is true that right thinking individuals sure are on limited release. However, it is not only important just to think right but also to act right. Who knew that when we continued our existence in this lonely planet of ours, the ideals to do right which were imparted to us by parents, of compassion, of respect for life, of integrity, love of virtue etc which also were advocated and further by our schools, colleges, churches etc would be so non existence in practice in the real world, where we actually need to be practicing what was preached? Where is the quality education that we all thought we received? We would like to think that we all are recipients of quality education. The curriculum that the relevant authorities have designed for schools, colleges and universities are based on delivering and enhancing quality education but where does it go when it’s actually time to deliver. We certainly need to spare a thought for this. Is it the failure of the individual or are we living in an idealist society where we just talk and there is no action to it. Perhaps, it is a combination of both. We have become part of a system where the wrong is overlooked and gently accepted it as routine and normal. Is something wrong with the institutions that advocate these ideals or is there something wrong with the individuals themselves for this failure. Or is there something bigger that we are missing, something that is much bigger for us to comprehend. We would all like to think that it is something bigger, much bigger for us to comprehend and leave it at that and move on with our miserable lives and let’s face it has been the attitude so far. Whatever wrong is perpetuating in our society and is being allowed to perpetuate be it corruption, favoritism, red tapism, immorality, dishonesty, negativity, indignity of labour etc etc are only going to rot our society and make our very existence intolerable and miserable. A fresh graduate when asked after three year of fine tuning and polishing is rather less optimistic about the future. There is fear and uncertainty clouding his mind and to be honest it is not supposed to be so because of the very fact that the schools and colleges are supposed to equip an individual to be ready for the challenges that lie ever ready to bring one down. So, why is there uncertainty? Why is there negativity? The mindset of an educated individual should be one of optimism, isn’t it? One answer can be because the society feeds him, the environment which he finds himself encourages such thought and behavior. And ultimately he falls in line of the existing pattern of our society. It is in our great quest to make our life more comfortable and easier that we have spun around ourselves a web where we ourselves are unable to cut loose, which we have failed to oversee. Survival has become so fierce that only those who can make it and those who can’t lie gullible to fall prey to social stigmas. This ultimately has led to not only social tensions but also individual degradation. A family of five, a husband and wife and five beautiful children were found dead in their home. Why? The parents had both lost their jobs and the husband, unable to find work, shot his wife and children before turning the gun on himself. It seemed as if there was no solution and no hope. The darkness of depression breeds wrong thinking. Irrational thought, fearful thinking, contemplation of destruction and death grow abundantly in the pit of darkness. In the light, these thoughts seem absurd and harmless, but the cloak of darkness hides their danger. The reality is that if we think wrong, we will live wrong. The opposite is also true, that if we want to live right, we must think right. A right thought life produces a right life! Will Rogers once said, “What the country needs is dirtier fingernails and cleaner minds.” A famous scene in Peter Pan illustrates the power of thoughts. Peter is in the children's bedroom. They have seen him fly and want to fly, too. They have tried it from the floor, then the beds! The result is failure. Finally, John asked, "How do you do it?" Peter answered, "You just think lovely, wonderful thoughts and they lift you up in the air." An educated mind should spur right thoughts and endeavour to work to influence and modify his environment where he finds himself. In the words of Albert Einstein, “If I had an hour to solve a problem I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.” Haven’t we all done all of the thinking of the problem that we need to, isn’t it time that we have a solution at hand and become part the solution ourselves. A great responsibility rests upon the cultivated minds to reshape and ultimately make right the very structure of the society because it is through society values and ideals are strengthened and exercised which inevitably influences the individual strands that form the very basis of society. Growth, environment can co-exist; India must lead fight on climate: PM
New Delhi, april 6 (iaNS): “Seeking to scotch "lies" being floated about the land acquisition bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asserted that it synergized India's growth imperative with the need for environment protection, while calling for the country to demonstrate leadership in tackling the global threat of climate change. Inaugurating the state environment and forest ministers' conference here, Modi said environment protection and development can go "hand in hand" but expressed disappointment that "lies" were being floated around in this regard. Giving the example of the land bill, he said: "The provisions of the bill do not touch tribal and forest land. But serious misconceptions and lies are being spread about it." He urged those spreading such "lies" to desist from doing so and added that their attempts to "misguide society are harming the nation". The two-day conference, also attended by union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, seeks to focus on issues of air pollution and better techniques of solid
waste management and sewage water treatment. It will also discuss the recommendations of a report by a highlevel committee, headed by former cabinet secretary T.S.R. Subramanian, recommending review of the country's green laws. Reflecting on his ministry's expectations from the meet, Javadekar said he hoped all states
take lead in thinking of ways to protect the environment. "We must think of traditional methods to tackle environmental issues. There can be green solutions in our age-old traditions," he said. The prime minister sought to clear the "wrong impression" of India that it was not serious on environmental issues, saying the
Land bill in sync with environment would partner with the central government in its effort to protect the environment. "We have planned for quite an intensive interaction on all important issues of forest and environment conservation. We will definitely have a good, working outcome," Javadekar told IANS. In his address, Modi also said India was ready to take the lead in fight against climate change but "people who lecture us on environment and the use of cleaner energy don't give us nuclear fuel (for clean energy)". "These are double standards," he said, adding that India has to
India's missile interceptor fails test bhubaNeSwar, april 6 (iaNS): India's ballistic missile interceptor failed on its tenth test on Monday, being unable to reach its target, a senior defence official said. The indigenous Advanced Air Defence (AAD) inte rceptor missile was fired from Wheeler Island off the coast in Odisha's Bhadrak district, about 170 km from here, but plummeted into the Bay of Bengal seconds after lift-off. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the AAD missile is 7.5 metres tall and weighs around 1.2 tonnes. The Monday test was against an electronic target to validate the missile capability. With the latest mission, the DRDO has tested the missile interceptor 10 times with eight of the tests being successful. The missile had last failed to hit the target missile during a similar test from the same defence base on July 26, 2010.
country had a culture in which the environment was equal to the divine. "Respect for environment is in our DNA. As our ancestors have long served mankind, we should lead the efforts in protecting the environemnt. That should be our attitude towards climate change as well," he said. Encouraging people to adopt a healthy and clean-energy lifetsyle that could contribute to environment protection, Modi suggested the youth commit themselves to the use of bicycles for, at least, once a week. He urged urban bodies to focus
on solid waste management with programmes to generate wealth from it, adding that such authorities could recycle waste water and send it to farmers, who in turn would make use of it and provide other services like growing organic vegetables, which would make life easier for all. The prime minister, who was presented a report on the status of tigers in India, expressed satisfaction on the increase in their number, adding that it reflects "India's commitment to respect for nature". He also released a "Standard Terms of Reference for Environment Impact Analysis", which was described by Javadekar as a step towards ensuring "ease of doing business". Modi also launched a National Air Quality Index, which will enable people across India to track the quality of air they breathe with the click of a button. Available on the ministry's website after the launch in 10 cities in the first phase, the colourcoded index indicating air quality will provide real-time data detailing the level of pollution in a given city.
'Janata Parivar merger matter of days' patNa, april 6 (iaNS): The merger of the six parties of the erstwhile Janata Parivar was a "matter of a few days", Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Monday. "Everything has been finalised and completed for the merger. It is only a matter of a few days," Nitish Kumar told the media after returning from Delhi where he met Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his own party president Sharad Yadav in this connection. Nitish Kumar said the formal announcement of the merger will be made in the next meeting to be called by Mulayam Singh soon. "Now, there are no ifs and buts, merger is final," the Janata Dal-United leader said. Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Monday said that after the six parties merge, they would defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party in the assembly polls scheduled this year. "Our leader will be Mulayam Singh Yadav," Lalu Prasad said.
Opposing Land Bill amounts to obstructing growth: Naidu New Delhi, april 6 (pti): Vehemently defending the Land Acquisition Bill, government on Monday said that opposing this legislation amounts to obstructing growth which is needed for providing jobs and creating rural infrastructure. "Obstructing the land acquisition, fair compensation, and rehabilitation Bill means obstructing the growth of the country. One has to understand this that the country wants growth," said Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said at a CII event. "Rural boys and girls want job opportunities...approval is needed even for irrigation projects. Employment for the affected families is made mandatory which was not earlier there (in the Bill)," he said. Amendments to the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013 have been approved by the Lok Sabha but could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha as the ruling NDA does not have a majority in the upper house. However, pending the passage of the amendment Bill by Parliament, the Ordinance was re-promulgated to ensure continuity in legislation. Opposition parties are against the Bill in present form and have been opposing it within and outside Parliament.

3 policemen killed in Kashmir SriNagar, april 6 (iaNS): Three policemen were gunned down and a policeman and a former militant were left critically injured in three terror attacks -- the first major strike in the Valley since the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government came to power in March. A police officer said the guerrillas attacked a three-member police party at Amshipora village in Shopian district with automatic weapons, killing all of them on the spot. "A police party of three had gone to Amshipora village in connection with a crime investigation when militants attacked them with automatic weapons," he said. "A head constable and two constables were killed in this attack." The Shopian attack came barely hours after the guerrillas fired at and critically injured a police officer in Baramulla district. The police officer had boarded a bus at Mirgund and the militants too boarded the same bus. They then shot him twice. The officer was supposed to alight at Parihaspur, but the militants didn't allow the bus to stop. The bus finally stopped nearly 30 km away, where the militants deboarded and fled. It was then that the terrified bus passengers raised the alarm. In the third incident, militants on Monday afternoon shot at and critically injured a former militant Rafeek Ahmed Dada outside a bank branch in Tral town of south Kashmir in Pulwama district. The injured was shifted to hospital in critical condition, a police officer told IANS.

KolKata, april 6 (iaNS): Around 8,000 handicapped people on Monday staged a law violation programme in the city to press for a fourpoint charter of demands including bringing all such people under the below
poverty line list. The other demands included punishment of culprits carrying out atrocities on the disabled and the passing of a state law benefiting the disabled population. The agitators broke six-
seven police barricades as part of the protest, with police trying to bring the situation under control. "Some arrests were made but those people were released thereafter," said Kanti Ganguly, general secretary of the West Ben-
gal Pratibandhi Sammilani (WBPS) which staged the demonstration. Ganguly, who is also a former minister and current state committee member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, called for "immediate withdrawal" of an alleged "false chargesheet" against the association's officials for holding a demonstration on the same day last year. "We demand all physically challenged people to be placed under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) scheme and the state should pass a special law for the disabled populace," Ganguly said. A year ago police baton charged a protest march organised by the association protesting against an incident of alleged police inaction involving the murder of a disabled person and arrested some of the participants. Thereafter, police chargesheeted its senior officials which the association is vehemently protesting against.

Presently, Indian Navy has 14 conventional dieselelectric powered submarines which include 10 Russian Kilo Class and four German HDW class vessels. Parikkar is in the city to review the progress of Project 75 programme undertaken by the Western Naval Command and is likely to get a status report on the Project 15 B-Class stealth destroyers being constructed at MDL.
Centre is anti-poor, anti-farmer: Congress
New Delhi, april 6 (iaNS): Describing the BJPled National Democratic Alliance government as "antifarmer and anti-poor", the Congress on Monday accused it of undoing all the good work done by the erstwhile government. Addressing a press conference here, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said the Land Acquisition Act 2013 was drafted after 2 1/2 years of consultation with all political parties and some of the BJP leaders even wanted to take credit for it after the bill was passed and became a law. "We don't have any problem with BJP leaders wanting credit for it but we want to ask why do they oppose it now," he said. Similarly the Food Security Act, passed during the United Progressive Alliance rule, is also being diluted and the poor are not given the grains that they deserve, he said. "By offering money instead of grains would not solve their problems," Singh said, adding that the poor farmer or labourer would first try to repay the loan he must have taken if gets money from the government instead of buying grains. The Congress leader also criticised the central government for setting up the Shanta Kumar Committee on the Food Security Act saying it was just an eyewash to dilute the poor-friendly act. The MNREGA was also not being implemented properly and poor farmers and labourers were suffering, Singh said. He said he keeps hearing about the problems of the people from Congress-ruled states due to all these activities of the central government. Touching upon the controversy over the organising a conference of chief justices of high courts and chief ministers on Good Friday, the Congress leader said the conference could have been organised on some other day. and asked "Would the Modi government organise such a conference on Diwali or Dussehra."

MuMbai, april 6 (pti): Asking the Maharashtra government why animals like goats do not figure in its ban on cattle slaughter, the Bombay high court on Monday mooted a licence policy by which import of meat of cows and bulls slaughtered outside the state can be permitted. A division bench of justice VM Kanade and AR Joshi was hearing a bunch of petitions challenging a provision under section 5 (d) of the recently amended Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act which bans possession and consumption of meat of animals like cows and bulls. According to the petitions, the flesh of
these animals, if slaughtered outside Maharashtra, should be allowed inside the state. "Why has the state banned only cows, bulls and bullocks? What about other animals like goat?" the bench asked. To this, advocate general Sunil Manohar said the government was considering it. "This is just the start (banning of cows, bulls and bullocks). We may consider banning slaughter of other animals too. As of now the state felt it was necessary to protect cows, bulls and bullocks," he said. The bench directed the government to file its affidavit in reply to the petitions and posted the hearing on April 20.
dra Modi on Monday met senior leaders of the Muslim community who apprised him of their concerns, including the increasing radicalisation and emerging threat of terrorism. "While expressing apprehensions about the trend of increased radicalisation and emerging threat of terrorism, the leaders underlined the need for greater unity and collective efforts to meet the challenge," an official release said. The leaders brought to the notice of the prime minister issues relating to properties of Muslim shrines, mosques
ernment's support in providing better facilities to Muslim youth, particularly in the field of education. Modi gave a patient hearing to the delegation and assured them of his full support in meeting the grievances of all sections of the Muslim society. He emphasised the need to empower Muslim youth to enable them to play a larger role in nation-building. Modi specifically assured the leaders that he will look into their grievances on shrines, mosques and madrassas. The prime minister further

Wonder material graphene can sniff out deadly food toxin April 7 is World Health Day
KolKata, april 6 (iaNS): Could wonder material graphene - the thinnest on earth and 200 times stronger than steel - help solve India's food safety woes linked to storage and transportation? Scientists may have inched closer to an answer. Graphene is the new buzzword in the global electronics industry and scientists at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) have applied its unique properties to sniff out a deadly cancer-causing food toxin with high sensitivity, just like finding a needle in a haystack. World Health Organisation has designated "Food safety: from farm to plate,
make food safe" as the theme of this year's World Health Day (April 7). It includes food safety along the whole length of the food chain in a globalised world, from production and transport, to preparation and consumption. And the toxin in question, Aflatoxin B1 (one from the aflatoxin group of natural poisons), is a common contaminant in peanuts, chillies, cottonseed meal, corn, rice and other grains. Produced by a fungus, it is a potent liver carcinogen, impairs immune system and hinders growth in humans and animals. "During transportation the toxin level can grow and multiply. So, we developed and tested a graphenebased sensor which gives out an ultra-sensitive and highly specific readout on the toxin
level compared to other sensors," Chirosree RoyChaudhuri, assistant professor, Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, IIEST, in Howrah, West Bengal, told IANS over the phone. "The modified form of graphene (reduced graphene oxide) that we used can easily bind to the protein-like structure of the toxin and give an enhanced signal compared to other materials. It is 100 times more sensitive than conventional sensors," she said. Approximately 4.5 billion people living in developing countries are chronically exposed to high, uncontrolled levels of aflatoxin. Moreover, there is a lack in awareness about these toxins in India, pointed out B.N. Reddy, professor, Mycology (study
of fungus) and Plant Pathology Lab, Department of Botany, Osmania University, Hyderabad. "Western countries, on the other hand, have strict regulations governing the testing of food products for aflatoxins. Chronic health risks are particularly prevalent in India where the diets of people are highly prone to fungal toxins due to poor harvesting practices, improper storage and transport," Reddy told IANS over the phone. Toxin presence also affects trade in food commodities with other countries. To manage the menace, one of the ways is employing simple and affordable detection techniques, said Reddy. RoyChaudhuri said the new sensor can be manufactured economically, is
portable and when refrigerated, has a shelf-life of about two-three months. It could be suitably modified to detect other types of toxins as well. "Specifically in this study, we have pointed out a different electrical aspect which has not been reported earlier. Graphene displays certain interesting electrical characteristics which imparts additional selectivity to the sensor," RoyChaudhuri said. The research was published online in 'Biosensors and Bioelectronics' journal in January this year and will come out in print in June. Other authors of the study are S. Datta and J. Basu from IIEST. RoyChaudhuri claimed the graphene-based device can indicate toxin contamination "even when it is
present at a level that is 10 times lower than its designated permissible limit in countries like India, U.S. and Europe". The use of graphene and other carbon-based nanomaterials, are growing rapidly, ever since its discovery a decade ago. At the same time, recent studies have suggested graphene may be toxic to humans and create environmental hazards as well. So how could a graphene-based sensor ensure food safety? RoyChaudhuri informed the developed technique is non-invasive. "The food product doesn't come in direct contact with the sensor. A small amount of sample is required for testing. The remainder of the food item is untouched," she added.

‘Iran talks a part of broader foreign policy’ WASHINGTON, AprIl 6 (Ap): President Barack Obama is casting the Iran talks as part of a broader foreign policy doctrine that sees American power as a safeguard that gives him the ability to take calculated risks. Obama defended a framework nuclear agreement with Iran as a “oncein-a-lifetime opportunity” to prevent a bomb and bring longer-term stability to the Middle East. He insisted the U.S. would stand by Israel if it were to come under attack, but acknowledged that his pursuit of diplomacy with Tehran has caused strain with the close ally. “It’s been a hard period,” Obama said in an interview with New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. He added that it is “personally difficult” for him to hear his administration accused of not looking out for Israel’s interests. “We are powerful enough to be able to test these propositions without putting ourselves at risk,” he said, citing his overtures to Cuba and Myanmar as other examples of his approach.

The president’s comments come in his seventh year in office and days after the U.S. and other world powers reached a tentative agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The framework cleared the way for negotiators to work out technical details ahead
of a June 30 deadline for a final deal. Obama argued that successful negotiations presented the most effective way to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, but insisted he would keep all options on the table if Tehran were to violate the terms.
“I’ve been very clear that Iran will not get a nuclear weapon on my watch, and I think they should understand that we mean it,” Obama said in the interview published Sunday. “But I say that hoping that we can conclude this diplomatic arrangement — and that it ushers a new era in U.S.-Ira-
nian relations — and, just as importantly, over time, a new era in Iranian relations with its neighbors.” The president said there are many details that still need to be worked out with the Iranians and cautioned that there would be “real political difficulties” in implementing an agreement in both countries. He reiterated his opposition to a legislation that would give the U.S. Congress final say in approving or rejecting a deal, but said he hoped to find a path to allow Congress to “express itself.” The White House plans an aggressive campaign to sell the deal to Congress, as well as to skeptical Arab allies who worry about Iran’s destabilizing activity in the region. The president has invited leaders of six Gulf nations to Washington this spring and said he wanted to “formalize” U.S. assistance. On the substance of the Iran framework agreement, Obama outlined more specifics of how the U.S. would seek to verify that Tehran wasn’t cheating. He said there would be an “inter-
national mechanism” that would assess whether there needed to be an inspection at a suspicious site and could overrule Iranian objections. The nuclear talks have marked a remarkable shift in the frozen relationship between the U.S. and Iran. It has become normal for officials from both countries to communicate and hold face-to-face meetings. Obama is yet to meet with Iranian President Hasan Rouhani, though they did speak on the phone. He has also exchanged letters with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Obama said the letters include “a lot of reminders of what he perceives as past grievances against Iran.” But he said the concessions Khamenei allowed his negotiators to make in the nuclear talks suggests that “he does realize that the sanctions regime that we put together was weakening Iran over the long term, and that if in fact he wanted to see Iran re-enter the community of nations, then there were going to have to be changes.”

Pak, Lanka ink agreement for nuclear cooperation
ISlAmABAd, AprIl 6 (pTI): Pakistan and Sri Lanka today signed six agreements including one on nuclear cooperation, two months after Sri Lanka inked an atomic deal with India, as the two countries agreed to deepen ties in various fields. The agreements were signed after Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had a meeting with visiting Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena here. According to an official statement the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understating (MoU) “for cooperation between Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and Atomic Energy Authority of Sri Lanka”. The two sides also decided to increase the current trade of USD 438 million to USD 1 billion within the next few years. Other agreements included one on cooperation against illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and academic cooperation agreement on exchange and collaboration between Pakistan’s National Defence University and Sri Lanka’s Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies. Sri Lanka’s nuclear pact with India in February during Sirisena’s first foreign visit after assuming office entailed cooperation in the transfer and exchange of knowledge and expertise, sharing of resources, and capacity building and training of personnel in peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Sri Lanka and Pakistan also singed MoUs in the field of sports, shipping and disaster management. The two leaders held a one-on-one meeting which was followed by delegation level talks discussing a range of subjects. Sharif said that Pakistan attached great importance to its relations with Sri Lanka. “There is immense goodwill in Pakistan for Sri Lanka which should permit us to develop even more close and cooperative relations in all fields including political, economic and defence,” he said.
Why more people are sharing less on Facebook NeW YOrk, AprIl 6 (IANS): If you have cut down on the amount of content you share on Facebook or Twitter even as your lists of friends and followers grow, you are not alone. A study co-authored by an Indian-origin researcher suggests that although more and more people are participating in social networking, a smaller percentage of users are actively creating and sharing content. The findings to be published in the journal Management Science pointed out that the cheaper and easier it becomes to reach large numbers of people via social media, the fewer “content creators” choose to participate and the more cluttered the networks become.
“Social communication incentives diminish even as the reach or the span of communication increases,” said study authors Ganesh Iyer and Zsolt Katona from University of California, Berkeley - Haas School of Business. Industry reports estimate that just 10 percent of Twitter users broadcast 90 percent of the network’s tweets, while only a tiny fraction of the 55 million users who blog post daily, Katona noted. The relative scarcity of message creators has been noticed before. But what has not been understood are the mechanisms responsible for the imbalance of senders and receivers and the implications for the social networking industry. The new researchers suggests that with expansion
of the social network, receivers, who once were the recipient of messages from only a few senders, are now targeted by many senders, leading to increased competition for attention. And the more distant the receiver, the harder it is for the sender to craft relevant messages, the researchers noted. As competition grows, some senders decide the payoff is not worth the trouble and drop out, and others decide not to enter the fray, which explains why the proportion of senders to receivers is so low. It may also explain why some users turn away from popular social networks and are looking for more intimate places to share items with just a handful of people, the researchers noted.
Indonesian court rejects last-ditch appeal by Australian death-row convicts JAkArTA, AprIl 6 (reuTerS): An Indonesian court rejected on Monday a lastditch challenge by two Australian drug convicts facing execution by firing squad, but lawyers for the state and defense were divided over whether legal avenues remained for them to avoid the death penalty. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were convicted in 2006 as the ringleaders of a plot to smuggle heroin out of Indonesia. They had both challenged the Jakarta administrative court’s decision not to hear an appeal against President Joko Widodo’s refusal to grant them clemency. “There is no more legal recourse,” Novarida, head of the state lawyers team, told reporters after the verdicts were delivered dryly in a court packed with lawyers and journalists. However, the pair’s lawyer said they would take their case to the constitutional court. “They have the right to live, and the
Kenyan warplanes attack suspected militant positions in Somalia NAIrOBI, AprIl 6 (Ap): Kenya launched air strikes against Islamic militants in Somalia following an extremist attack on a Kenyan college that killed 148 people, a military spokesman said Monday. Warplanes attacked positions of the al-Shabab militant group on Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning, said Col. David Obonyo of the Kenyan military. Al-Shabab, which is based in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the college attack Thursday in the Kenyan town of Garissa. Four gunmen died in the assault. The air strikes occurred in the Gedo region of Somalia, Obonyo said. “This is part of continuing operations, not just in response to Garissa,” he said. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta had vowed harsh measures against alShabab following the slaughter at Garissa, which is near the border with Somalia. Kenya has troops in Somalia as part of an African Union force to attack al-Shabab and shore up the beleaguered Somali government. Kenya has carried out air strikes before. Al-Shabab said it attacked students at Garissa College University as a reprisal for Kenya sending troops into Somalia.
state attorney knows that (the law) allows them to defend their lives,” Leonard Arpan told reporters. The Australians are among 10 drug convicts due to be executed by firing squad on the prison island of Nusakambangan. Others in the group include citizens of France, Brazil, the Philippines, Ghana, Nigeria and Indonesia. Widodo denied clemency to the convicts despite repeated pleas from Australia, Brazil and France. Australia’s minister for foreign affairs, Julie Bishop, voiced disappointment at the latest setback and said in a statement that Canberra would continue to use all diplomatic options to seek a stay of execution. Calls For Mercy Rebuffed Sukumaran and Chan, who were not in court on Monday, had sought in February to challenge the president’s blanket rejection, with their lawyers arguing that he did not give due consideration to each case. But the administrative court originally dismissed their case on the grounds it did not have the legal authority to assess it. The attorney general is awaiting the outcome of legal appeals by three remaining death row inmates before setting a date for executions. His office’s spokesman has previously said the intention is for all the executions to be carried out together, but they could be conducted in batches. Indonesia has harsh penalties for drug trafficking and resumed executions in 2013 after a five-year gap. Widodo has pledged no mercy for drug offenders, saying Indonesia faces a “drug emergency”. The country is a major destination for drugs trafficked in the region. Australia has made repeated calls for mercy on behalf of Sukumaran and Chan, but Widodo has refused to change his stand, turning down an offer of a one-off prisoner exchange and to have the Australian government bear the cost of the convicts serving life sentences. “Where there is life there is hope,” Mercy Campaign, a group collecting signatures for a petition to Widodo, said on its Facebook page after the latest ruling. “We will continue to respectfully ask the president to change his mind.” Sukumaran and Chan were identified as leaders of a group of nine Australians arrested on the resort island of Bali in 2005 and convicted of attempting to smuggle some 18 lb (8 kg) of heroin to Australia. Other members of the group have been sentenced to long prison terms.

ipl jamboree returns, star-studded opening night
KOLKATA, ApriL 6 (pTi): Its scandalous past seasons still quite fresh in memory, the Indian Premier League (IPL) organizers will look to ensure that the focus remains firmly on cricket when the cash-rich event gets underway with a glamorous opening ceremony, featuring top Bollywood stars, on Tuesday. After a pulling off a controversyfree tournament last year, the organizers would again be hoping for a smooth run when the 47-day tournament, marred by a spot-fixing scandal in 2013, kickstarts with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. Before that, the event will open on Tuesday night to a glittering ceremony where Bollywood superstars Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma form a powerpacked line-up of performers. The melting pot that it is, the opening match itself features two players, who aggressively faced off as recently as in the World Cup last month, playing together in one team. David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan will share the dressing room (Sunrisers Hyderabad) putting behind their spat in Australia recently. As the international rivals become friends, there will be some who will be hungry for success as the tournament provides an ideal launchpad ahead of next year's World Twenty20 in India around the same time. There will be some veteran Indian warhorses with the likes of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan among others, who will see this as a final chance to make a comeback to the national side. The Indian selectors might think otherwise, but the IPL teams clearly
believe the 33-year-old Yuvraj still has the fire in his belly as he was bought for a record Rs 16 crore by Delhi Daredevils after intense bidding among four franchises. This had happened on the back of his three successive Ranji Trophy centuries which were not enough for him to make the World Cup cut. But the player of the tournament in India's 2011 World Cup triumph is not the one to give up and would be among the ones to watch out for this season. "It's been a couple of hard years for me since I have come back from my treatment. I have worked very hard and I have had a good domestic season. I am confident of doing well and hope that things get better from here," the dashing lefthander has said. In fact, Yuvraj would be the key to the success for the Delhi Daredevils, who finished bottom of the table in the last two seasons. DD have once again gone for a complete overhaul and apart from Yuvraj, they have invested in a 36-year-old Zaheer Khan who too
would be aspiring to don India colours one last time. To be led by South African pro JP Duminy, DD have his compatriot Imran Tahir as the Pakistani-born legspinner would look to replicate his World Cup show. The consistent Mohammad Shami will partner the highly experienced Zaheer in the pace department, while in Yuvraj and star Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews, they will have the necessary X-factor. It's a strong team on paper but it remains to be seen whether they better their 2012 show where they finished on top and crashed out of the play-offs. They also have last-four finishes in 2008 and 2009. The Sri Lankan captain, however, will miss out on the team's opening match in Chennai on April 9 because of a ban on the Lankan players by the Tamil Nadu government. Another power-packed team, who are yet to win the coveted silverware is Royal Challengers Bangalore, the finalists in 2009 and 2011. Like their team owner and busi-
PSG beats bitter rival Marseille
pAriS, ApriL 6 (Ap): Paris Saint-Germain moved back above Lyon to the top in a hardfought French title race after twice coming back from a goal down to win 3-2 away to bitter rival Marseille in a frenzied match on Sunday. However, the win came at a high price as David Luiz and Thiago Motta went off injured with PSG facing a hectic schedule chasing trophies on four fronts. Luiz limped off after appearing to pull a hamstring and Motta trudged off right before the end with a similar-looking injury. PSG recently lost central midfielder Yohan Cabaye to a muscle injury, while Brazil winger Lucas is still trying to regain full fitness. "If I have to take something away from the game it's the victory, but we paid dearly with two players injured," PSG coach Laurent Blanc said. "In the race for the title, nothing is decided but it was an important win." PSG has a French Cup semifinal against Saint-Etienne on Wednesday, followed by the League Cup final against Bastia on Saturday and the first leg of its Champions League quarterfinal against Barcelona four days later. Marseille's top scorer Andre-Pierre Gignac struck twice in the first half, either side of France midfielder Blaise Matuidi's equalizer, to put Marseille in charge. But PSG profited from poor defending to score twice in quick succession at the start of the second half. Brazilian defender Marquinhos equalized and Marseille defender Jeremy Morel scored an own goal moments
later. "It's a fair result. It was a match of opposing styles and PSG came out on top," Marseille coach Marcelo Bielsa said. "It was nothing to do with luck or anything else, that's why we have no excuses." Tensions mounted when some Marseille fans threw projectiles at the PSG bus as it pulled into the Stade Velodrome stadium, with one window slightly cracked. PSG is one point above Lyon and five ahead of third-place Marseille with seven games re-
maining. "The key to the game was that we were never comfortable," Bielsa added. "I knew that PSG would dominate play with its passing and our tactics didn't work." With Zlatan Ibrahimovic largely kept quiet, Gignac shone as he took his season's tally to 18 league goals. But the absence of Cameroon center half Nicolas N'koulou was keenly felt, and Marseille's defense offered goalkeeper Steve Mandanda scant protection.
Royal star clinches 1st Winter Cup Cricket tournament
The Royal Star Team, Dimapur posing for lens after winning the final of 1st Winter Cup Cricket tournament, at Balijan Local Ground.
DimApur, ApriL 6 (mExN): Royal Star, a Dimapur based cricket team, clinched the 1st Winter Cricket Tournament, a month long 15-15 over knockout cricket tournament.
Organised by Balijan Youth Club, Royal Star beat KarbiAnglong based Lagan XI by 48 runs at the final at Balijan Local Ground, Karbi Anglong, Assam on Sunday.
Royal Star made a commendable target of 150 for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted 15 overs. Chasing the target, Lagan XI could muster only 103 in the alloted15 overs with 5 wickets to spare. The day belonged to Royal Star's right-hand bat Suresh, who clobbered 7 sixes and 2 boundaries while scoring 61 runs. He returned with the ball, scalping2 wickets. He was declared as the ‘Man of the Match’. He was also adjudged the ‘Man of the Series’ for his all round performance in the tournament. Gracing the occasion as the chief guest at the final, D S Pandey, appreciated positive outlook of all the teams despite the poor infrastructure and making the event a grand success. He also congratulated the organising body for giving platform to the youngsters. The sports secretary of the organiser, Shyam Roy also delivered a short speech. As the overall champion, the Royal Star team walked away with a cash prize of Rs. 16,000 while the runners-up received Rs. 8500.
Hogg and Kuldeep Yadav besides the South African spinner Johan Botha. Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav will lend stability to the pace department as the bowling would be KKR's main strength. The batting will rely heavily on the likes of skipper Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey. 2013 winners Mumbai Indians have a star studded support staff with Ricky Ponting as coach and a team icon in Sachin Tendulkar, who would look to inspire the side. They have acquired Aussie World Cup winning opener Aaron Finch and have some good all-rounders in Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard but it's their inconsistency of their batsmen including captain Rohit Sharma that would make the difference. Last season's runners-up Kings XI Punjab had a rousing start to their campaign winning five matches on the trot in the UAE leg. They boast of World Cup winners in Glenn Maxwell, David Miller and Mitchell Johnson but it remains to be seen how they cope with the hectic season ahead. They will also have the devastating Indian opener Virender Sehwag, who would be hungry for more, and Wriddhiman Saha, aiming to play a big role like last season. Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have announced David Warner as their captain, also feature an explosive batting line-up in Shikhar Dhawan, Eoin Morgan and Kevin Pietersen who will miss the league stage but will return should they make the playoffs. The fans and organizers may also have to keep a tab on the weather forecast as thunderstorm (known as Nor'wester) towards the evening is not unusual in these parts during this time of the season.

ness magnate Vijay Mallya, the team is flamboyance personified but that has not always translated in wins. The team obviously would look no further after having Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in their top four. Boasting of the terrific trio who define modern day cricket, RCB's batting is arguably the most explosive and this time they have invested Rs 10.5 crore in Dinesh Karthik to give depth to the line-up. But with Varun Aaron and Ashok Dinda their two leading pacers to begin with, the bowling looks a bit shaky in absence of World Cup player of the tournament Mitchell Starc who is likely to miss three weeks for a knee injury, while Adam Milne is recovering from a heel injury. The spin department will rely on Yuzvendra Chahal and Iqbal Abdulla who will be bowling under the tutelage of coach Daniel Vettori the master craftsman of the leftarm spin bowling. The 2010 and 2011 champions Chennai Super Kings have been the most consistent team across all seasons and will start 2015 with
some off the field distractions after the Supreme Court's judgement on Gurunath Meiyappan and the team's ownership by ICC chairman N Srinivasan-led India Cements. Following the conflict of interest judgement, the team was transferred to a wholly-owned subsidiary named Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd and made it difficult for Srinivasan to become BCCI president again. But in India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK have a captain who can overcome any crisis with ease. This year too, they have retained the nucleus of the side and have invested in Irfan Pathan and Michael Hussey, Kyle Abott, Rahul Sharma among others. They have made the last four in each of the last seven seasons, including four straight final appearances and two titles. Such is their might that three years without a title is being considered a trophy drought and they would look to bounce back and silence the critics. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders were in the news before the season began with BCCI ignoring ICC's report of Sunil Narine and summoning the West Indies off-spinner for a retest of his suspect bowling action. Having got a clean chit two days before their first match, it would be interesting to see how effective Narine becomes with his remodelled action. Narine, it maybe noted, has been key to their success in winning the titles in 2012 and 2014 and their effective slow bowlers make them the team to beat at the home ground of Eden Gardens. This season, they have invested Rs 2.4 crore in little known KC Cariappa, who is seen as a future Narine, and have two Chinaman bowlers in Brad
IP culture is on the rise and it is becoming very undemocratic, and a new form of racism in our society for its culture is against the idea of equality as it makes some citizen inferior than others. There can be no argument that some people deserve special treatment. However, it’s conventionally forgotten that the treatment is reserved only for the special office they hold, not for the individual per se. The president or PM of the country, for example, is protected across the world. It’s because the office they represent and the symbolic importance they carry. In our country VIP are surrounded by an average 3 policemen at the taxpayer expense, but more than 700 citizen get just 1 policemen. Ironically, it is the common man who pays the bills for the VIP security while he himself remain exposed to crimes, unsafe at street and even unsafe in its own home. Coming specifically to the question of VIP security for politicians. I always wonder why traffic has to be stopped for their convey and why thousand have to suffer or life have to come standstill to make life for big ones comfortable. On top of that, the most irked and shameful things are politicians’ kith and kin availing VIP treatment at the expense of the citizens. Let’s make it clear, politicians who enter politics do so voluntarily and not under compulsion with the main objective to serve the public as proclaimed by every politician. So if you, as a politician believe that your life is at risk for being a politician then either spend your own pocket money, but please not tax payers money to get yourself body guard or if you value your life so much, and politics pose a threat to your life, feel free to go back to the safer occupation, to whatever you were doing before you came to politics. If you (politicians) feel that you are unsafe on the street or at public place then common men are unsafe too. Mind it, layman life is equally important and valuable as yours. Arwind kejriwal who is against VIP culture in his assembly speech said that ”as long as God is with you ,nobody can harm you. When God decides otherwise, nobody can save you whatever be the number of your bodyguard”. So instead of just increasing your security at the expense of public money, have faith in God, do good work and I’m sure God will give you a better protection beyond your acceptance. Having worried about the VIP culture and its growing burden the Supreme Court and several governments have been intervening in this issue. However, since any action in this regard involves politicians and other influential person, they find it difficult to move. As a result, VIP problem has now become an epidemic and a part of the culture. The citizen must strongly rise against it as it’s not only disintegrating our society to a large extend but also violating our fundamental rights guaranteed by our constitution i.e. Equality before law. Moreover, the rule of law should be applied without any bias and the defaulters should be heavily dealt with penalties as no man is above the law of the land and every person, whatever is his social standing is equal in the eye of the law. oleang (festival) is the biggest traditional festival of the Konyaks which takes longest duration that prolongs for six days, that is why Konyaks mark it from April 1 to 6 at present days. This spring season is a favorable time for festival when the cold winter is over; wet and hot summer is yet to come. People are in festive mode when the sowing of the fields is done and nature is blooming with its new face. The activity of the old field of a year is over, and the work of another new field had just begun with seedling. So it marks the end of a year and heralds a coming new year. Therefore, this festival can be seen as a New Year festival. The main object of the Aoleang is celebrating the presence Wangwan, the divine spirit of blessing. They take the name of Wangwan praising and invoking its presence while singing, dancing, eating and drinking. Traditionally this Wangwan is symbolized by erecting bamboo with its branches hanging the tender palm leave in front of the Morung. From the first day, they would erect it and invite Wangwan to their community during festival, then asked all prosperity and blessing for the year through all singing and rituals of the festival. The last day of the festival is marked when in the evening they carried the symbol of Wangwan out at the outskirt of the village wishing goodbye to Wangwan till they meet in the next year again. The Aoleang is marked by much singing, dancing and feasting. This is the time when people remember their friends and
relatives. Everyone prepares best food in their houses. Everyone invites and visits friends and relatives. This is the time people remember ladies members of the family who were given married to other families either within or outside community with best food items and gifts. During this festival, they also observed the second day as to bid final adieus to the dead souls of the year in family and community. People visit the bereaved families and the graves of their near and dear ones. Aoleang is the time to mark boys and girls adulthood which called Süopanpu. Young boys and girls whoever attained adulthood shall start wearing traditional formal dresses and join the adult group in singing and dancing from that day. It is also a time of peace and reconciliation. Anyone willing to make peace and reconciliation by forgiving the past incidents or debts takes the opportunity of Aoleang festival as they share the feast, singing and dancing together. But we have never thought of getting into the Hindi filmdom,” he added. The hippie culture and drug menace are some factors often attached with rock music. Admitting the stereotypical attitude, Yogesh says that “it will fade away soon”. “These kind of stereotypes belong to the 1970s and 1980s era and people still believe in that. But it is very different right now. I think it doesn't matter whether you are into rock or other kind of music or other profession -- if people are into those kind of things, they will do it.
"But the stereotypes will fade away very soon,” said Yogesh, who's the brother of the band's frontman Girish Pradhan. The Shillong-based band, which was formed in 2009, doles out heavy metal music, electronic and power ballads with a feel of 197080s era, taking influences from Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Guns N Roses. The band gave a highvoltage performance at the Rongali festival here on Sunday. Yogesh believes in the power of such fests to support the genre. “Surviving as a musician is pretty tough with Bollywood ruling and dominating the music scene. Music festivals and more venues for such music should be
there to promote it. But it is important to note that we have our own set of followers and audience, so that helps us stick to the genre,” Yogesh said. Talking of the band's past, Yogesh said it was frequent jamming sessions led to the formation of the band. “My brother Girish and I started a heavy metal rock band when we were in high school. After that we met other bandmates and started jamming together. Gradually those session turned into a band,” he said. The band is currently working on its second album and Yogesh says that they will blend folk elements of the country with hard rock for the new offering.

While shooting for the video, Jackie Shroff’s son was seen interacting with young fans on set and he even did a couple of somersaults and kicks as dance moves for the video! Tiger’s flawless dancing skills have made him such a hit with the younger audiences. Producer Bhushan Kumar and choreographer Ahmed Khan were also on the sets of the music video, overlooking the making of the youth-oriented dance video! Talking about his involvement in the young dance video Tiger told a leading daily, “After the movie (Heropanti), I got a lot of love from kids. They would ask me if I could actually do all the stunts that I performed in the film. This video is to celebrate their innocence and to inspire them in the right direction.” Another surprise for the youth is that in this video, Atif Aslam will be seen shaking a leg for the first time on camera. The Pakistani heartthrob has never danced in a music video before. Talking about his experience Atif said, “Ahmed wanted me to dance with Tiger, who is a professional. I decided to try it, and I enjoyed myself.”

odel-turnedentrepreneur Heather Mills has claimed a new title the fastest disabled female skier. Mills, who lost the lower half of her left leg and crushed her pelvis after she was knocked down by a police motorcycle in 1993, set the new world record last week in the Alpine resort of Vars cheered on by a tightknit team of supporters. The 47-year-old told Hello! Magazine she was 'amazingly proud' after she hurtled down the French mountain at 103.6mph. She said: 'I feel completely
elated. It was such an incredible thing to do.' Mills carried a good luck charm from her 11-year-old daughter Beatrice - a small heart-shaped pebble. She said of the special stone: 'She found it on one holiday in Long Island and she gave it to me as a charm to keep me safe. I never go anywhere without it. Adding: 'I had a specially made downhillskiing outfit which is so tight that when I first put it on, I literally could only wear olive oil underneath so I could actually move. 'I was then told I had to wear
an Alpine ski suit under it, which I thought would be impossible. But I managed to get them both on. 'The only thing I squeezed into a pocket was my little pebble from Bea.' Mills, who married Sir Paul McCartney in 2002 and was divorced from the former Beatle in 2008, said: 'It’s a rare man who can give you the same thrill that going down a mountain at more than 100mph can.' She also said she wanted to compete in the Paralympics in South Korea in 2018, saying: 'I’ll be 50 then - but that won’t stop me.'

Sania-Martina win Miami Open title
MiaMi, april 6 (pTi): Sania Mirza achieved yet another career milestone by capturing her 25th WTA doubles title as the Indian ace continued her dream start with Martina Hingis to win the Miami Open trophy, here on Sunday. The top seeded IndoSwiss pair overcame a slug-
gish start to take the title with a 7-5, 6-1 scoreline against second seeded Russian team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. Sania and Hingis were trailing 2-5 in the opening set but regrouped and turned the tables on their fierce opponents by reeling off eight games in a row.
They had beaten the same Russian team to win the Indian Wells - their first title together. It has been an absolute dream start for Sania and Hingis as they are yet to lose a set since they began their partnership. "We just tried to keep telling each other to enjoy the struggle. Last week ev-
erything came very, very easily to us - we didn't lose more than four games in a set. Over here we were down, and we were panicking. It was like, 'Oh my God, we're not playing well.' We just weren't used to that," Sania said after the match. Hingis credited the win to tips provided by Sania's farther Imran Mirza during the match. "Today the coaching really turned it around - your dad came on court," Hingis said to Sania. "The most important thing is that we never stopped believing we're a great team. They played a great set to get us to that position, 5-2 down. Then we just tried to stay in there and get our chances. We just built on every point, which is what we did well last week too," the Swiss great, who now has 43 doubles title, said. With this win, Sania and Hingis now will move to number three from nine in the Road To Singapore doubles leaderboard. In individual doubles rankings, Sania is now only 145 points away from becoming world number one.
Djokovic overpowers Murray for fifth Miami Masters title
MiaMi, april 6 (iaNS/ EFE): Serbian top seed Novak Djokovic won his fifth Masters 1,000 title on Sunday by defeating Scotland's Andy Murray 7-6 (3), 4-6 and 6-0 at Key Biscayne. Despite not showing his best form on a hot day in Miami, Djokovic nonetheless demonstrated his competitive nature in the match lasting two hours and 47 minutes by overcoming all obstacles to win the Miami Open, after triumphing previously here in 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2014. Murray, who had lost to the Serb in the semi-finals at Indian Wells two weeks ago, had much more trouble with the heat and humidity although he started out aggressively and broke Djokovic's serve in the first set's third game. However, his rival returned the favour immediately and then dominated the tie-break to take the set. The pair delivered some great tennis in the second

set but Murray looked like he deserved the 4-6 win when he broke Djokovic. After losing his temper and picking up a code violation after that set, Djokovic regained his focus and
broke Murray in the third set's first game and then continued to pound the flagging Scot until he secured the 6-0 win in the third set for the title. Djokovic has now beat-
en Murray in their last 10 hard-court matches and has racked up an overall 18-8 record against him. The Serb earlier this year won at Indian Wells and at the Australian Open.
