No separate data on murder of journalists New Delhi, August 4 (iANs): The home ministry on Tuesday said data on the murder of journalists was not maintained separately, and 113 cases were registered and 30 people arrested for attacking media persons in 2014. “The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has started collecting data on attacks on media persons (grievously injured) since 2014. Data on murder of journalists is not maintained separately,” Minister of State for Home Affairs Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha in a written reply. He said the ministry has not received the report on safety of journalists from the Press Council of India and also has no proposal to set up a special task force to investigate attacks on journalists. “The provision of security to an individual is primarily the responsibility of the state government in whose jurisdiction such individual ordinarily resides,” he said. “Security is provided strictly on the basis of threat assessment made by the security agencies. There is no separate categorisation of protectees for journalists, although individual journalists are also among those who apply for security cover.”

tr gives clarion call to nagas to uphold unique history & identity DiMAPuR, August 4 (MexN): Chief Minister TR Zeliang today made a clarion call to the Naga people to protect and uphold the unique history and identity and to standby the principle of ‘One people, one vision and one goal.’ A statement from the media cell, CMO stated that the chief minister called upon the Nagas to come together to find better and more effective ways of facilitating the Naga peace process and come to a settlement which is ‘honourable and acceptable to the Nagas as a whole.’ On the challenges and responsibility placed on the shoulders of the Naga people by the Prime Minister, Zeliang said Nagas
must seize this opportunity to rise up to the occasion and stoutly take up the trust and responsibilities placed squarely on our shoulders by the nation. Zeliang said Nagas must not shy away, or shirk from the expectations of

Nagas must rise up to the occasion and “sink our petty differences and strive concertedly for the greater good” the nation, but endeavor to the best of God-given abilities to make the society a better place for the present and the coming generations. “It is now incumbent on us to reflect the traditional pride, selfrespect and confidence that we, Nagas, are proud
certedly for the greater good by burying the hatchets and forgetting the hurt caused to each other in the past if at all any.’ Commenting on the recently signed framework agreement and its content, which is yet to be made public, Zeliang appealed to
one and all to abstain from any negative thinking, either on the Prime Minister and the Government of India, or on the leadership of the NSCN (IM). “For me, I firmly believe that the Prime Minister has a healthy attitude and respect towards the Nagas, and he will never do what is bad for the Nagas. Rather, we should all congratulate the Prime Minister for taking such a bold and positive decision in the style of a true statesman,” he stated. The chief minister also espoused confidence that once the detailed modalities are worked out, all concerned would be consulted before finalizing them.
A Naga woman in Kohima was in seventh heaven over the signing of a ‘framework agreement’ between the NSCN (IM) and the Government of India (GoI). She was seen hopping around the house, exclaiming, Kuknalim! Kuknalim! Hallelujah! Our prayers have been answered! She prayed that the land she emerged from would be a part of this ‘agreement.’ There was, of course, no way for her to know as both the NSCN (IM) and the GoI remained tight lipped over the contents of the agreement even Tuesday. “There is enormous curiosity and anxiety,” says Tapan Kumar Bose, a longtime observer of the Naga issue. “People have waited 18 years for a ray of hope to emerge,” given their circumstances particularly in the states of Assam and Manipur. Nagaland based civil society, however, has chosen to “give the two sides time and space” to formulate the agreement before publicising it. They hope the NSCN (IM) will not “betray the Naga people” on their promise of a solution “acceptable” to the people. In this vacuum, speculation and rumour have emerged that could lead to possible panic in Naga inhabited areas in India. Documents uploaded on social media suggested “demands” made by the NSCN (IM) at an unknown point of time. Another speculated 8 points that constituted the “shared
One group cannot represent whole of Nagas: NNC asserts DiMAPuR, August 4 (MexN): Naga National Council (NNC) has termed the August 3 signing of the ‘framework agreement’ with the NSCN (IM) as ‘very wrong on the part of the present government at the centre.’ “It is unfortunate and unpleasant politically on the part of the Government of India to cheat and lie to the majority of Naga national groups and the people who have been left behind and neglected,” a press statement from information & publicity wing, NNC stated on Tuesday. It pointed out that one group cannot represent the whole and majority of the Naga national political groups and the people of Nagaland who stood for Naga national unity for political settlement in the interest of all concerned. The NNC therefore said the ‘GoI cannot be trusted in this serious matter as they always apply divide and rule policy to destroy the Naga people instead of proper political settlement for permanent peace in the region.’ It also reiterated that inclusiveness of talk or dialogue with all the Naga national political groups and stakeholders by the GoI has gone in vain, which, it said, was repeatedly stated by interlocutor RN Ravi on behalf of the government at the centre. sovereignty” that could be the basis of the framework. Mainstream media, on the other hand, went ahead and hailed the framework as a “peace accord.” Such ‘accords’ take time to be drafted, and this framework is just the first step towards it, notes senior journalist AS Panneerselvan. The conciliation process is a matter of protracted negotiations and several documents emerge over time. “Initial drafts often get leaked but this is unfair to the process as in the Naga case it was initiated a long time back,” he says, warning that “going by an earlier draft will be detrimental over time.” But how much time will it take for the content to be made known? Observers suggest that given the NDA’s status in
parliament and the NSCN (IM)’s ageing leadership, this was the perfect timing to publicly announce such an agreement. However, the Indian parliament will hold sessions till August 14, during which the agreement may not be introduced in case its clauses come under attack, though such a framework will not need ratification from the parliament. On August 15 the Prime Minister will make his Red Fort speech. The details on the framework could emerge only after that. The “wisdom” of “not sharing the broad contours at least” of the contents of the framework, however, will create myriad issues. “Eventually it will boomerang more on the NSCN (IM) than on the Government of India,” feels Bose.
former PM HD Gowda Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland is not Indian Territory: Adinno hails naga peace pact BeNgAluRu, August 4 (Pti): Congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Naga peace accord, Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda today hailed the pact as a “major achievement” to usher peace in the region. “This peace accord with Naga insurgent groups is one of the major decisions to bring peace in the North Eastern states in general, particularly Nagaland,” he told reporters here. Reminding that the initiation of talks with Naga groups happened during his tenure as Prime Minister, he recalled his meeting with leaders of the groups in Switzerland and various steps taken by his government for peace in the region that included announcement of a package. “This peace accord with Naga groups is a major achievement to see to that there is peace in the region. I hail this decision of the Prime Minister,” he added. Before the agreement was signed yesterday, the Prime Minister had spoken to several national leaders, including Gowda. Gowda said the Prime Minister had called him to inform about the accord and that he congratulated the PM and told him that this was one of the major achievements.
PDP says similar approach needed for Kashmir issue
sRiNAgAR, August 4 (Pti): Ruling PDP today welcomed the “historic peace accord” between the Centre and Nagaland’s NSCN (IM), saying a similar approach was needed in Kashmir and suggested that the four-point formula propounded by former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf could be used as a ‘launching pad’. “We welcome the signing of the historic peace accord between the Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (IM),” PDP chief spokesperson Mehboob Beg said in a statement. Beg appealed to the Centre to engage with all stakeholders in Kashmir with a similar approach - respecting their sentiments, culture and history -- in a sustained dialogue with the utmost dignity. “The Four Point Formula arrived at during the Vajpayee-Musharaf dialogue could be used as a launching pad to achieve the desired results,” the PDP spokesman said. Beg said the Naga Peace Accord was a huge step towards the challenges being faced by the country and then trying to resolve them with a flexible attitude.
DiMAPuR, August 4 (MexN): Pronouncing its stand on the Naga political issue, Naga National Council (NNC) led by Adinno Phizo on Tuesday stated that no Nagas should be confused with the ‘Naga national stand’ that ‘NNC is the guardian of Nagaland.’ “The Naga National Council (NNC) is not a political party. It is not a government. It is the ultimate national institution of the Nagas. As such, every Naga has a responsibility to uphold the
Naga National Council,” Adinno said in a press statement. Substantiating this stand, Adinno recounted the history of the Naga National Council. It said NNC was formed on February 2, 1946 to hold the Naga people together in one platform as there was no central authority prior to this. In May, 1947 the emerging modern India sent her delegation of the Constituent Assembly of India to Kohima and met the NNC members, and made an of-
GoI will not reduce central forces in NE
New Delhi, August 4 (iANs): There is no plan to reduce the deployment of central security forces in the northeast, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said on Tuesday. Stating that there was no proposal to reduce the deployment of central forces in the northeast, he said state governments were reimbursed security-related expenditure. The other measures taken by the government were sanctioning of India Reserve Battalions, banning unlawful associations, declaration of “disturbed areas” under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, and issue of notifications for unified command structure. According to the minister, three factions of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) were observing a ceasefire with the central government. “The NSCN-Khaplang had unilaterally abrogated the ceasefire in March and indulged in violence. “However, the ceasefire with the NSCN-IM, NSCN-Khole Kitovi and NSCN-Reformation “are in force”, he said. The central government signed a peace accord with the NSCN-I-M here on Monday.
fer to the Nagas to join the Union of India. The offer was refused, the press statement stated. In June 1947, the Ten-Years Agreement was given by the Indian representatives. NNC agreed with modification for 10 years but India broke off its promise with NNC. And before Great Britain handed over her power to modern India, the Naga representatives declared Naga Independence on August 14, 1947, a day ahead of modern India. AZ Phizo, on becoming
the president of NNC in 1950, immediately began directing the course of NNC into a political consciousness and brought all regions (tribes) together as a nation. He next took a national referendum, because modern India alleged that only a few educated Nagas were talking about their independence. Consequently, national plebiscite was conducted on May 16, 1951 by giving a choice to the people to decide whether to stay independent or join In-
dia. The result was 99.9 percent not to join India. Phizo also brought in the Eastern Nagas to join the mainland and established the Federal Government of Nagaland on March 22, 1956, it maintained. In light of the above mentioned, the NNC stressed that the ‘indisputable right the Nagas have is that Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland is not Indian Territory’ and asserted, ‘the Nagas have every right to be a nation.’

NSCN (IM) cadres in jungles of Eastern Bangladesh seek transit assistance
AizAwl, August 4 (the iNDiAN exPRess): NSCN (IM) cadres holed up in the hilly jungles of eastern Bangladesh have contacted Mizoram authorities saying they might need transit assistance as the state is the shortest and most convenient route through which they can go to Nagaland following the peace agreement between the militant group and the Centre. Top sources said “Colonel” Apum, commander of the NSCN (IM) in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts region, made contact with operatives on Tuesday to intimate them of a possible return to India through Mizoram. The NSCN (IM) contingent in Bangladesh has about 50 male and female combatants who remain in
a camp not far from the international border near Mizoram’s western Mamit District, a senior official said. Another senior official said the contingent could either pass through Mizoram via Mamit town and Aizawl city, the state capital, or through Kolasib district, which borders Assam, depending on their chosen point of entry. There is as yet no confirmation about when the transit would be, however. This will not be the first time NSCN (IM) contingents have passed through Mizoram. They had passed through the state at least twice in the 1990s, both leading to encounters with security forces after which some members dispersed into the state’s interiors.
They had also entered south Mizoram less than a decade ago during an internal disagreement that saw several alleged turncoats being murdered and some senior members of the group later arrested by Mizoram Police. The Mizo National Front, itself a former insurgent group, meanwhile said in a statement that both Thuingaleng Muivah and Isak Chishi Swu called former CM and MNF supremo Zoramthanga around 9.30 pm on Monday thanking him for his efforts towards a peace deal between the Indian Government and the NSCN(IM). The MNF also congratulated the leaders over the peace deal and wished them the best that it would lead to a durable solution.

Naga Framework Agreement: Some issues yet undecided says Neiphiu Rio New DelhI, August 4 (IANs): Former Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday said that even though the historic Naga accord was signed between the Indian government and the NSCN-IM, both sides were yet to take a decision on demands like the right to retain weapons in areas of the northeast where the insurgent group has its presence. "The Naga accord should not be seen as an immediate settlement between the government and the NSCN-IM. There still are demands from the NSCN-IM to be allowed to carry arms, especially in areas where it has a presence. "Now this might be
basically to protect themselves from attacks by rival factions. But the government is yet to decide on this demand," Rio, who served as Nagaland chief minister for three consecutive terms, told IANS in an interview. Rio is in Delhi to attend the ongoing monsoon session of parliament. The 64-year-old leader of the Naga People's Front (NPF), who gave up his chief ministership to become the lone Lok Sabha member from Nagaland, also said the government and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) have decided on a timeframe under which they expect to decide on all the
demands. Refuting media reports that the government did not accept the NSCN-IM's demand to redraw the state's border to incorporate Naga-inhabited areas of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal, he said: "The demand for Greater Nagaland is the main demand of the NSCN -- irrespective of which faction it is. The question of dropping that demand does not arise as this is what the conflict is all about." "Demand for Greater Nagaland is part of the 16-point demand in the agreement by the NSCNIM. I do not think it is going to be dropped. However, let's see what happens,"
said Rio, adding that every thing would be clear once the minutes of the accord are out, which he believes would take some time. Asked what if the other factions of NSCN do not give a positive response to the peace accord that was signed on Monday, Rio said: "The Naga Peace Accord is based on the basis of principles of the NSCN which is the same. There is still room for discussion with other factions and the government will surely talk with the other factions also. They will be brought to the negotiation table." Rio said Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him on Monday evening and spoke to him about how to
solve problems related to Nagaland further. Refuting rumours about Isak Chisi Swu not being consulted on the final agreement of the Naga Accord due to his deteriorating health, he said: "Swu was informed about each and every minute development related to the issue and even general secretary T. Muivah had spoken to him prior to the ceremony at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence." NSCN-IM chairman Swu was admitted to a Delhi-based hospital on July 5 after he suffered renal failure. The 85-year-old leader underwent surgery on July 14 and is said to be recovering.
'Accord will encourage other outfits to follow suit' AgArtAlA, August 4 (IANs): The signing of the peace accord between the central government and the NSCN-IM will encourage other militant outfits to begin peace talks with the government, a former terrorist-turnedpolitician said here on Tuesday. "We welcome the peace accord between the central government and NSCN (IM). This significant step will encourage other militant outfits of the region to initiate peace talks with the government," INPT president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl told IANS. At the instance of then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, Hrangkhawl's dreaded militant outfit Tripura National Volunteers (TNV) had signed a tripartite peace accord with the central and Tripura governments on August 12, 1988 before around 450 men of the outfit surrendered. Subsequently, the TNV merged with a tribal based political party Tripura Upajati Juba Samity and formed the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) in 2002. The 70-year-old tribal leader has served as a member of the Tripura assembly for 10 years from 1998. Speaking on the accord with
Tarun Gogoi welcomes Naga peace agreement, questions lack of details guwAhAtI, August 4 (PtI): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today welcomed the Naga peace accord, but expressed astonishment on why "clauses of the agreement have been kept in the dark." "The agreement has been reached after prolonged struggle by the Naga group and it will help in restoring peace and prosperity in Nagaland, but it is astonishing why the clauses of the agreement are kept in the dark," Gogoi said in a statement here. "The Ministry of Home Affairs has given the impression that it is in the dark about the details of the agreement and to keep such an important document under wraps raises doubt about its veracity. It also raises doubt that the peace deal might affect the interests of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh," he said. Gogoi further said, "we appreciate peace in Nagaland and welcome settlement of Naga issues, but will oppose tooth and nail any move that affects the interests of Assam". He pointed out that he was strongly opposed to the previous NDA Government's move to extend ceasefire in the Naga inhabited areas beyond Nagaland. With an aim of ending insurgency in Nagaland, the Centre yesterday signed an accord with key outfit NSCN(IM), which Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a "historic" step to usher in peace in the state. the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah, Hrangkhawl said: "It is good for both the northeast region and the Nagas, as the NSCN-IM had been fighting for the cause of the Nagas for many decades." The central government and

DImAPur, August 4 (mexN): The Asian Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) today stated that indigenous peoples, specifically indigenous women and girls, are the main targets and victims of trafficking due to their prevailing multidimensional condition of discrimination and marginalization. This condition, the AIPP stated in a press note, is brought about by the states’ disregard of their distinct identities and collective rights to their lands, territories and resources, and customary systems of governance for their collective survival, wellbeing and dignity. It is also due to the state’s neglect and denial of basic social services such as appropriate education, health services, livelihood and decent employment. The AIPP cautioned that reports of trafficking of indigenous peoples, women and girls, and children all over Asia are coming in different reports and stories. Citing various reports, it pointed to trafficking of indigenous peoples from Myanmar, Vietnam, Lao, and India. In India, the AIPP said that in the past eight years, 20,000 girls belonging to Chhattisgarh’s tribal region have been sold by human traffickers. The UNODC, it added, has identified the North East region as a high source area of trafficking of women and children. In Odisha as well, women’s organizations report that in 2013, more than 40,000 adivasi women from Sundargarh district alone were trafficked to work in big cities. Of these women, the whereabouts of around 15,000 are unknown. Civil society groups also report that about 10,000 children are trafficked from Jharkhand every year not only to work as either domestic help or sex workers, but also for forced surrogacy, which is emerging as a new form of exploitation. In India, the AIPP noted that poor economic conditions, usurpation of their land by corporations, lack of employment opportunities, displacement due to development and corporate projects, and impoverishment, render adivasi men and women vulnerable to trafficking in their
of the northeast region, including United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA-Pro-Talk faction) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Progressive (NDFB-P), are currently under ceasefire and suspension of operation agreement with the government. Officials of Tripura and union home ministry had held tworound of talks with the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) after the rebel group expressed their willingness to hold peace talks. Members of NLFT and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) have taken shelter and arms training in Bangladesh, which shares a 856km border with Tripura. Both outfits, banned in 1997, advocate secession of Tripura from India. But as most ATTF cadres have surrendered, the group is almost non-existent now. In view of the significant taming of terrorism in Tripura, the Left-ruled state government on May 27 withdrew the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) which gives sweeping powers and judicial immunity to security forces in conflict-hit areas. The law was enforced in the state 18 years ago to curb terrorism.

MCSU members allegedly attacked the Chawngte Police Station in the headquarters of Chakma Autonomous District Council (CDAC) where student leaders were detained, prompting police to fire in the air in which Agosh Chakma, a student

NE people not aware of initiatives for them: Rijiju New DelhI, August 4 (IANs): Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said a majority of people from the northeast were not aware of government initiatives for them. "I do not agree that the government is not aware of the problems faced by the northeastern people living in metro cities of the country. A majority of these people are not aware of government initiatives for them," the minister of state for home said. He was speaking at the first meeting of the North East Forum in the national capital after the BJP-led NDA government came into power last year. Stating that there was a "disconnect" between the people from the region and the government, the minister said that until the northeast people voluntarily try to
know about government efforts, the situation will remain the same. The condition of northeastern people in metro cities across India was the subject matter of the discussion at the meeting. Several parliamentarians from the northeastern states, including Gaurav Gogoi, C.L. Ruala and Brindaban Goswami attended the meeting. Presentations were made by IPS officer from the northeast, Robin Hibu, on crimes against people from the northeast in various cities of India. M.P. Bezbaruah, chairman of the Bezbaruah committee to look into the problems of the northeast people in cities, also spoke at length on the implementation of its recommendations.
search for livelihood and survival. The lack of exposure of tribal people to mainstream culture, and non-access to the justice system add to their vulnerability to trafficking. The AIPP said that indigenous communities for centuries are self-governing and self-sufficient. However, it lamented that wide-scale expropriation and destruction of their lands and resources have systematically destroyed the livelihoods that are particularly sustained by indigenous women. It cited the massive displacements of indigenous communities from their territories as a key factor for their vulnerability to trafficking, as these have undermined their economic base and social cohesion. RBI keeps policy rates on hold at 7.25%
MSO, Indian banks will no longer require prior nod New DelhI, AUgUst 4 (PtI): Multi System Operators and Indian banks wanting to open foreign branches will no longer be required to take prior security clearance, Lok Sabha was informed today. Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said no prior security clearance would be required. “It is proposed to do away with national security clearance for Multi System Operators and Indian banks wanting to open foreign branches,” he said while replying a written question. He said the Home Ministry has formulated a policy for national security clearance for certain sensitive sectors of the economy by codifying all existing practices. He said the policy has also liberalised certain investment restrictions existing earlier. “The new policy is aimed at bringing about a healthy balance between meeting the imperatives of national security and facilitating ease of doing business and promoting investment in the country,” he said.
Mahindra to launch five cars in seven months New DelhI, AUgUst 4 (NDtV AUto): It was at the Mahindra XUV5OO launch that Dr. Pawan Goenka said, that Mahindra would be launching nine cars by the end of this fiscal year. He had said that 3 will be all new, 3 major refreshes and 3 minor refreshes. Having already launched the facelift of the XUV5OO, the Scorpio and the Thar the company is looking to expand their portfolio in the next 7 months. Two will enter the compact/sub-compact SUV segment. The company has already revealed sketches of the TUV3OO sub-compact SUV and has said that the car will be launching in September this year. The S101 is the other car and its launch will follow suit. With the government bringing in a scheme for electric vehicles (FAME), Mahindra has plans to bring in an electric version of the Verito and this will add to its electric car portfolio. The company is also looking at introducing facelifts of the Bolero and the Xylo which round up the company’s goal for this year. Considering that there are already two sub-compact SUVs coming this year, Mahindra will have to re-think their strategy for the Quanto. Will it survive? When we asked Dr. Goenka this question, he told us to wait and watch and did not give a definitive answer.
MUMBAI, AUgUst 4 (ReUteRs): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept its policy rate on hold at 7.25 percent on Tuesday, as widely expected, while leaving the door open to ease further depending on the inflation outlook and how swiftly banks lower their lending rates. The RBI also said government economic reforms and the timing of any increase in U.S. interest rates would be key factors that will determine whether the central bank cuts rates for a fourth time this year. “It is prudent to keep the policy rate unchanged at the current juncture while maintaining the accommodative stance of the monetary policy,” the RBI said in its statement. “As the Reserve Bank awaits greater transmission of its frontloaded past actions, it will monitor developments for emerging room for accommodation.” India’s benchmark 10year bond yield was largely unchanged after the RBI decision. The broader NSE index was down 0.5 percent. The RBI has reduced its policy rate by threequarters of a percentage point since embarking on an easing cycle in January. The last cut lowered the repo rate to 7.25 percent on June 2. But, to the
Highlights of monetary policy MUMBAI, AUgUst 4 (PtI): RBI governor Raghuram Rajan on Tuesday kept interest rates unchanged, citing a spike in food prices and banks passing on to consumers only less than half of its previous rate cuts. Following are the highlights of the third bi-monthly monetary policy statement by the RBI: • • • •
Key policy rate (repo) kept unchanged at 7.25 per cent Cash reserve ratio (CRR) unchanged at 4 per cent Economic recovery is still work in progress After strong rainfall in June, July has been below par, but overall monsoon is near normal • Most worrisome is sustained hardening of inflation except food and fuel • Signs that consumption demand, especially in urban areas, is picking up • Weak global demand conditions restrained exports • Banks have passed on an average 0.3 per cent interest rate cut as against RBI’s 0.75 per cent rate cut since January • New investment demand emanating from private sector and government remains subdued • RBI retains growth target at 7.6 per cent for 2015-16 • Capital infusion into PSBs will help loan growth and transmission • Fourth bi-monthly monetary policy to be announced on September 29. central bank’s chagrin, the benefits for the broader economy have been limited because of commercial banks’ reluctance to lower their lending rates. The RBI’s next policy review is set for Sept. 29. That would be after the Fed’s September meeting, and any increase in U.S. rates is expected to suck money out of emerging markets. All but four of 51 analysts predicted the RBI would keep the repo rate on hold on Tuesday, but views were split over future ac-
tion. Twenty-four analysts predicted another 25 basis points cut this year, while 23 saw no change. Higher food prices pushed India’s annualised consumer inflation up to 5.4% in June, and analysts say the outlook will depend on rains as the monsoon season enters its climax over the next two months. The RBI maintained its consumer inflation target of 6% for January 2016, saying risks to that goal were “broadly balanced”, a slight change from its statement
on June 2 when it said risks to that target “were tilted to the upside.” However, the central bank also highlighted “a sustained hardening” of inflation outside of food and fuel as “most worrisome.” The RBI had this year set a broad target of 2 to 6 percent for consumer inflation. Indebted Indian companies are pressing for interest rates to be reduced further, and the RBI is unhappy that commercial banks have delayed reducing lending rates.
‘Engaged with the govt over the new financial code’
MUMBAI, AUgUst 4 (IANs):The central bank on Tuesday said that it is engaged in a dialogue with the government over the new financial code and that there exists healthy mutual respect between the them. “We have been supportively engaged in a dialogue with the government on the structure and policy of the proposed financial code,” RBI Governor Rraghuram Rajan said after the central bank’s monetary policy update at its Mint Street headquarters here. “We have to reach a broad consensus on the issue first, while the finer details can be ironed-out later.” The governor’s comments assumes significance as this has been the first time that he has publicly expressed his views on the government’s draft financial code which proposes to clip RBI’s autonomy. The code, if implemented, will undermine RBI’s ability to rein-in inflation. This will also discourage investors in taking risks in the future as RBI has been viewed by many as an anchor for financial stability in the country. However, the governor clarified that he is still in charge of the monetary policy, as he holds the veto right. Rajan further pointed-out that there are three reasons for a committee to replace the existing set-up where the governor, deputy governor and executive director of monetary policy take the decision on the key lending rates on the data made available to them. The first he said was that a committee will be well represented, secondly it will equally distribute the responsibility of the policy and thirdly it will ensure continuity in policy even after the governor or any other member leaves. “There is an healthy respect between the government and the central bank. De-facto RBI is independent. Any changes will first need to be made in the RBI Act through a legislative process,” Rajan added. The equity markets had earlier reacted negatively to the proposed financial code. However, experts feel that Rajan’s views have elevated any worries that the investors might had. “Rajan is the right person to speak on the topic and he did. The comments that the RBI and the government are on the same page has elevated any worries that the markets had,” Anand James, co-head, technical research desk, Geojit BNP Paribas, told IANS.
Asus to contract manufacture smartphones in India Fiat Chrysler launches Abarth 595 in India New DelhI, AUgUst 4 (IANs): Taiwanese handset maker Asus will start contract manufacturing in India soon, having identified the country as one of its top three smartphone markets, thanks to its mobile phone subscriber base of a whopping 980 million, a top official has said. “We should able to zero in on a partner be it Foxconn or any manufacturer by the end of third quarter of this calendar year and actually start delivering the phones by the end of the fourth quarter,” Peter Chang, country manager at Asus India, said. “We are looking to make 70 percent of our smartphones in India,” Chang told IANS. “But we want to focus on the product and not on the manufacturing, so we have taken the decision of contract manufacturing.” Asus had launched its Zen-
Fone smartphones business in India 18 months ago and has sold nearly 1.6 million units. “We aim to capture at least 5 percent of the Indian smartphone market and be among the top four by the end of next year,” Chang said. Currently, Asus has around 2-percent share of the smartphone market in India. The handset-maker, which has 400 employees in India, is also looking at expanding its channel coverage. It has 120 exclusive stores in the country. Besides, it is also looking at research and development centres in India. Asus, whose top markets continue to be Taiwan, India and Indonesia, also sells its smartphones in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Turkey and the US. “India had the biggest fan base till about a week back when Indonesia took over. New DelhI, AUgUst 4 (PtI): Italian-American auto major Fiat Chrysler Automobiles on Tuesday launched its premium sports hatchback Abarth 595 Competizione priced at Rs 29.85 lakh in India. The company will also launch a new model, Punto Abarth around the festive season as it looks to expand product portfolio in the Indian market. “We had promised that we would bring the Abarth to India and it is important to deliver on the promise we made,” Fiat Chrysler Automobiles India President and Managing Director Kevin Flynn said. He further said: “Abarth 595 Competizione is known for its sheer performance, iconic style and rich heritage. With this launch, we are hoping to bring this same legacy to our Indian customers and are confident that Abarth would provide a superior driving ex-
perience.” In order to add to the Abarth line up, Flynn said: “We will also Punto Abarth around the festive season. This will be another performance oriented hatchback in the Abarth range.” While the Abarth 595 Competizione will be imported as a completely built unit, the Punto Abarth will be locally made, he added. On the company’s plans to enhance model line up in the country, Flynn said: “India is a strategic market for us and this is an integral part of our commitment to widen our portfolio and to provide greater value not only to our customers but other stakeholders as well.” Admitting that the company has been up against negative brand perception in India, he said the priority is to gain consumer confidence while also making business for its dealer partners viable in the long-term.

The four people who abducted two labourers for ransom in Kohima. They were arrested by police on August 3.
Dimapur, august 4 (mExN): Kohima Police (North PS) on August 3 rescued two labourers (mason workers) who were abducted by miscreants from an ongoing construction site at GREF camp area, Kohima. Four accused, including a woman, were nabbed after being chased down by the police. According to PRO, Ko-
hima police, the miscreants demanded ransom amount of Rs 40, 000 from the relatives of the labourers for their safe release. The amount was negotiated down to Rs 30, 000. CNC lauds ‘historic peace treaty’ Dimapur, august 4 (mExN): The NSCN (IM)’s Council of Nagalim Churches (CNC) today congratulated its Collective Leadership and Indian Leadership for the “historic peace treaty of the two peoples.” In a press statement, CNC general secretary Rev. Seksim Kasar said the peace agreement is not for few actors, but for the entire Naga people and Indian people. Rev. Kasar thanked all the people who have been tirelessly praying for the well-being of the Collective Leadership, Isak and Muivah and for their success; for the national workers; and for the sacred cause of the Nation. He further asked all to remember to give thanks to the Lord while pointing out that God had made
the NSCN (IM) Chairman made strong to get up and sign the peace treaty. “Also give thanks to the Lord for Muivah who had walked extra miles for the people,” he said. “Thank the Lord for the Leaders and workers who had consistently labored for it. Most importantly, give thanks to the Lord for the sake of Naga Army who had withstood the cruelty of the heat and the cold, the rain and the Sun, the pain and the ill.” Senior BJP legislator welcomes 'framework agreement' Senior BJP legislator and adviser to Corporation, Imtilemba Sangtam, has welcomed the “Framework Agreement” signed between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) on August 3 in Delhi.
Describing as historic the signing of the “Framework Agreement” in presence of top leaders of NSCN (IM), Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the senior Nagaland BJP legislator exuded confidence that the leaderships of the parties (GOI and NSCN-IM) would be able to come up with politically mature and wise steps while working out the contents of the “Framework Agreement” which would be “honorable, acceptable and workable” to the Naga people. Sangtam also appreciated the leadership of the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) for giving their concerted efforts in making the historic “Framework Agreement” possible.
Tikhir Students’ Union demands separate quota for Tikhir tribe KiphirE, august 4 (mExN): All the Tikhir candidates in the ENPO police recruitment rally held at NAPTC, Chumukedima on August 3 and 4 have withdrawn from Yimchunger tribe quota. Tikhir Students’ Union (TSU), the apex students’ body of Tikhir tribe, in a press release stated that the reason for mass withdrawal was non-fulfillment of government’s standing orders: NO.RCBT-5/87(Pt-II), NO.RCBT-5/87(Pt-III) and NO.PHQ (B-1)1/24(GEN) 2014/130. In this regard, TSU condemned the gov-
ernment standing orders, which it said, are “complete mockery to the birth rights of Tikhirs.” TSU alleged that “Indigenous, Scheduled Tribe and Backward Tribe certificates issued by the government authority have been ignored and rejected by the so called Yimchunger Akheru Arehako (YAA), apex students’ body of Yimchunger tribe at the rally with the idea of classifying ‘duplicate and original Yimchungers’.” It stated that the Tikhir candidates even after producing Indigenous, Sched-
uled Tribe and Backward Tribe certificates as Yimchunger tribe as per government order were rejected “pointing out the name of Tikhir villages.” In light of the above, Tikhir Students’ Union has demanded the State government to issue separate Indigenous, Scheduled Tribe, Backward Tribe and separate quota for the Tikhir tribe. TSU also directed all the Tikhirs not to avail Indigenous, Scheduled Tribe and Backward Tribe certificates from the government till further notification from TSU.
Nagaland Peace Centre and NSF welcome ‘framework agreement’ Kohima, august 4 (mExN): The Nagaland Peace Centre (NPC) has appreciated the “political will of both parties” in signing the “Peace Accord” between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) on August 3. The NPC, however, expressed that many civil societies and Legislators are expressing their joy “with reservation because the content of the accord is not visible to the Naga public.” “The NSCN (IM) is a revolutionary movement which fought whole heartedly to achieve its goal of political opportunities for the Naga people
as a whole for many years. It is considered to be a political movement and not religious or social movement,” noted the NPC in a press release from its executive director, Lhusi Haralu, and chairman, N. Theyo today. The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) also appreciated the signing of the framework agreement, expressing gratitude to the “tireless efforts” of the Collective Leadership of the NSCN (IM) in signing the agreement, as well as “genuine concern” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a press release from its president, Subenthung
Kithan, and general secretary, Boveio Poukai Duo, the NSF acknowledged that it is “yet to know the contents of the Peace Accord” but “truly appreciated” the framework. “The Federation hopes and believes that the contents of the accord will be honorable, acceptable and beneficial for all the Nagas cutting across the artificial boundaries,” it stated. The Federation hoped that at a moment when Nagas are “achieving a long awaited aspiration, all our Neighbors will appreciate the achievement casting aside their doubts and insecurities.”
Dimapur, august 4 (mExN): A meeting of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Monday authorized the party president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu to take necessary steps for revocation of the 9 NPF legislators who were issued suspension orders in January when they joined the ‘dissident camp’ to oust the incumbent chief minister and the party president. A press statement from NPF Central Office, Kohima informed that even though the party president was empowered to suspend or revoke the suspension orders of the dissident MLAs, the CEC meeting, which was called to deliberate on the future course of action decided that the president should be authorized to revoke the orders. Addressing the meeting, Dr Shurhozelie pointed out that though the party constitution authorizes the president to suspend or revoke the suspension orders served against 9 NPF legis-
lators, he wanted to consult the CEC members and let them decide how best to go about in this particular matter of revocation of the suspension orders. Meanwhile, the NPF CEC welcomed the Peace Accord signed on August 3 between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) with the hope and belief that the aspiration of the Naga people would be taken into account for permanent peace in the land. It also acknowledged the political foresight of the party president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu, Chief Minister TR Zeliang and Speaker Chotisuh Sazo for the formation of the Nagaland Legislators’ Forum (NLF) on Naga political issue on May 25, 2015 to make the voice of the House heard by all stakeholders; and also for constituting the Parliamentarian Working Committee of Nagaland Legislators’ Forum on Naga political issue comprising all political parties in the Assembly.

Kyong Hoho reiterates its stand
T
he Kyong Hoho had an emergency meeting on 2th Aug 2015 and deliberated about the news caption in local media on 1st Aug 2015 cautioning the State government and Kyong Hoho saying that Kyong Hoho is non-existent. The Kyong Hoho time and again made it clear that the Kyong Hoho is a well organised apex body of the Lotha tribe, in existence since 1923. Initially the nomenclature of the Kyong Hoho was "LOTHA TRIBAL COUNCIL" and in 1977 the nomenclature was renamed as "LOTHA HOHO" through a resolution in a General Body meeting. But when the "LOTHA BAPTIST CHURCH ASSOCIATION" was renamed as "KYONG BAPTIST EKHUMKHO SANRHYUTSU" (KBES) in 1979 and the "KYONG ACADEMY" was established in 1993, an agenda was put under the office of the Lotha Hoho to find out whether our tribe is "KYONG" or "LOTHA". Therefore, the Lotha Hoho Constituted a Re-
search Committee comprising of eminent Lotha intellectuals and elders from all the Circles and Ranges under Wokha District. After a thorough research, the Committee brought out their findings for recommendation of the Lotha Tribe as "KYONG". Basing on the findings of the research Committee, the Lotha Hoho convened a General conference on 26 & 27 of Nov. 2007 and deliberated on the nomenclature of the tribe Lotha/ Kyong at length and during the general conference the nomenclature "LOTHA HOHO" was changed to "KYONG HOHO". Further the Kyong Hoho clarifies that the term "KYONG" will be used only for Organisations, adding that, there was no such Hoho notification or Resolutions imposing upon any individuals to use or change their title Lotha to Kyong. Therefore the Kyong Hoho appeals to all Lothas not to misconstrue Kyong or Lotha. The Kyong Hoho further states that there is only one guidelines and certain conventions to constitute the
traditional institute of the Lothas, and the guidelines does not have any provisions for the frontal organisations to form or select a tribal Apex Body. As such, the present team of office bearers were duly elected/ selected as per the guidelines of the Kyong Hoho in Nov. 2008 and on expiry of the four years term the same team of office bearers were given extension for another term during the General Conference held on 11th Dec 2012 in presence of all the legislators from Wokha District, which was again re-affirmed by the highest Representative body of the Kyong on 26th Nov. 2014 during its meeting. Therefore, the Kyong Hoho appeals to all Lotha public not to confuse or get confused by the nomenclature of the Kyong Hoho and it further assures to all that till the expiry of its tenure the Kyong Hoho shall always uphold the sanctity of the Hoho and shall work ceaselessly for the welfare of the Lothas and the Nagas. PMEGP aspirants appeal to revoke imposition of Aadhar Card
Dimapur, august 4 (mExN): On behalf of Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) applicants, ‘PMEGP Aspirants Dimapur District’ has taken strong exception to making Aadhar Card compulsory under KVIC, DIC, NKVIB. In a letter addressed to the parliamentary secretary, department of industries and commerce, PMEGP Aspirants Dimapur District convenor K Toluho Sema stated, “Aadhar Card being made mandatory would grievously thwart and jeopardize several potential educated youth and deny their rights to avail the flagship programme for self-employment in Nagaland.” It stated that notification issued by the Central
Government and Supreme Court clearly mentions that Aadhar Card is optional not mandatory to avail any government schemes to citizens. No person should be denied any "benefit" or "suffer" for not getting the Aadhar Card, according to Order dated 23, Sept. 2013. Fundamental Rights under Article 14 (Right to equality and right to life and liberty) must appropriately be upheld for any or all the government schemes, the convenor stated. Any deviation or conflicting exercises by the implementing department would be an infringement of fundamental rights. The letter mentioned that the local authorities entrusted by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) have till now cov-
ered only a small percentage of the population while issuing Aadhar Card to citizens. “By no means, Aadhar Card be made mandatory but treated as optional at this crucial juncture,” it stated. “To forestall an imminent filing of PIL, legal/ contempt proceedings against the implementing authorities/officials, we bring forward our plea highlighting the morbid nature of the issue for immediate redressal,” said the Convenor. It further appealed to the public office to peruse over the impasse and immediately revoke imposition of Aadhar Card and allow all eligible candidates with or without Aadhar Card to sit for the ensuing successive interviews.

‘Framework’ or ‘Framed’ Solution
We are always putting the question of what is possible. If you put an impossible question, your mind then has to find the answer in terms of the impossible – not of what is possible.
T
- Krishnamurti
here is a popular parable among the Aos known as the ‘Nokdensanger Moon.’ An old man in a desperate attempt to stop his wailing grandson promised him that he will give the moon if he stopped crying. The grandson stopped crying and became happy and excited by his grandpa’s promise. The moon became a renewed promise each time his grandson cried but the moon was never given to him. The signing of the ‘framework agreement’ as a ‘preamble’ between the government of India and the NSCN(IM) that would press for a ‘final solution’ surprisingly came as news from nowhere. This ‘momentous’ signing came at a time when the Nagaland CM had very recently spilled out that “a solution is possible now.” Now, whatever the ‘peace accord’ or ‘framework’ that is signed, the fact that ‘it’ is yet to be clearly worked and mapped out only gives rise to varied interpretations within the fold of ‘suspect thesis.’ Th. Muivah hailing the signing as a momentous occasion while also placing the ‘trust’ and ‘confidence’ of the ‘Nagas’ in the hands of the government of India even as Naga civil societies are left wandering in the dark on its contents as well as the sudden agreement. Is this the beginning of the emergence of a new ‘Delhi Accordist’? What if this ‘Peace Accord’ is pressing for a ‘framed solution’ rather than a meaningful and acceptable framework? Besides, another pressing concern is whether the five points adopted by the legislative assembly is in coherence with what the NSCN (IM) is also ‘negotiating’ with the government of India. Both the Nagaland CM and Nagaland MP Rio have welcomed the peace accord which makes one to wonder such a hearty welcome when the contents of the ‘framework agreement’ is not known. Beyond the political diplomacy, this brings us to the question of ‘inclusiveness’ and the ‘will’ of the Nagas and whether the ‘final solution’ will be applicable for all the Nagas on board. Parallel to this, the struggle towards a supposed ‘final solution’ also hinges on the response of the Manipur government especially on the question of autonomy to the Naga inhabited districts and closely attached to this is the issue relating to Nagaland-Assam border issue. There is also the question of ‘alternative arrangement’ though it is not clear whether it means full autonomy under an autonomous district council or a separate territory within a state. On the whole, the contents of the ‘Naga political Issue’ or ‘Naga political problem’ or ‘Naga political solution’ has been seemingly submerged and ‘guised’ within the issue of ‘ceasefire’ and ‘peace talks’ and what really happens at the ‘negotiating table’ which has been the ‘knowledge for a privileged few’ is simply kept away from the purview of the Nagas as a whole. On another level, there are certain pressing questions that each and every Naga needs to deliberate upon - What is the core of the Naga political issue; what are the real problems concerning the political issue; how do we address the problems within the issues; what are the central issues concerning the possibility of working out a viable solution considering the complex nature of the issue? There is need for a newer understanding of the entire political landscape through a historical genealogy and the current intricacies in order to locate and address the core problems and issues before thinking of a ‘possible’ solution that is also soluble. PM Modi’s confession that the vexed Naga political issue has existed for too long is because of lack of understanding shows some degree of sincerity as a starter, though a solution is nowhere near just through understanding of Naga history, but it will ultimately narrow down to the question of accommodation and inclusion of the issues at hand and the ‘Naga representation’ that are to be involved in the Naga political process. What is seen wanting in the Naga political issue is a meaningful ‘dialogue.’ When there is apprehensions from the government of India that the Nagas may turn down their proposal clearly shows the absence of dialogue and inclusiveness. Skeptical eyebrows have been raised through the signing of this ‘framework agreement’ and a meaningful solution can come only through a healthy dialogue based on what is ‘possible’ and what can be acceptable to every Naga. Time is also high for the ‘political destiny’ of the Nagas that it goes beyond the parable of the ‘Nokdensanger moon.’ (Dr. Asangba Tzüdir is an Editor with Heritage Publishing House. Marriage can curb drinking problem
I
f you are young and already having a drinking problem, finding a partner to tie the knot may help you return to a normal life again, new research suggests. Marriage can cause dramatic reductions among young people with severe drinking problems, the findings showed. The researchers used previously collected data from a long-term, ongoing study of familial alcohol disorders. They examined how the drinking rates of the participants changed as they aged from age 18 to 40, and how this change was affected by whether or not participants became married. About 50 percent of the participants included in the study of familial alcoholism were children of alcoholics. "Confirming our prediction, we found that marriage not only led to reductions in heavy drinking in general, this effect was much stronger for those who were severe problem drinkers before getting married," said one of the researchers Matthew Lee from University of Missouri in the US. "This seems consistent with role incompatibility theory. We believe that greater problem drinking likely conflicts more with the demands of roles like marriage; thus, more severe problem drinkers are likely required to more substantially alter their drinking habits to adapt to the marital role," Lee noted. The role incompatibility theory suggests that if a person's existing behavioural pattern is conflicting with the demands of a new role, such as marriage, one way to resolve the incompatibility is to change behaviour, Lee explained. Scientists believe that the findings could help improve clinical efforts to help these people, inform public health policy changes and lead to more targeted interventions for young adult problem drinkers. The findings appeared in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

Africa to Obama: Mind Your Own Business Like all imperial powers before it, the US seeks to dominate the world in order to exploit it
President Barack Obama delivers a speech to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, July 28, 2015. Closing a historic visit to Africa, President Barack Obama urged the continent's leaders to prioritize creating jobs and opportunity for the next generation of young people or risk sacrificing future economic potential to further instability and disorder. (AP Photo)
U
nited States President Barack Obama is the most admired foreign leader in Africa because he has ancestral roots in our continent. This is partly the reason his ill-informed and stereotypical admonitions of our leaders attracted cheers from a large section of our elite class. But it is also because we African elites have internalised the ideology of our conquerors that presents us as inferior, inadequate, and incapable of self-government. Bob Marley's words that we must liberate ourselves from mental slavery are important here. In his speech to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Obama acted like a colonial headman lecturing the natives on how to behave as good subjects. Yet behind Obama's seeming concern for our good lies the social contempt he holds us in. Flagrant hypocrisy Why doesn't Obama openly admonish leaders of Western Europe whenever he visits their countries? Is it because they govern better? Who has the right to make this judgement and by what criteria? There is a lot of corruption and widespread human rights abuses (especially of migrant minorities) in Western Europe - not to mention the brutality, genocides, forced labour, and racism that characterised their governance of Africa during colonial rule. The difference between Africa and these nations is that we are poorer in material possessions. But does their present wealth imply better governance? To use Jean Bricmont's analogy from his book Humanitarian Imperialism, the US and Western Europe be-
have like a mafia godfather who, as he grows old, decides to defend law and order and begins to attack his lesser colleagues in crime, preaching brotherly love and the sanctity of human life - all the while holding onto his ill-gotten wealth and the income it generates. Who would fail to denounce such flagrant hypocrisy? In any case, is the US such a model country in governance to give Obama the moral authority to lecture Africans? In the US, a black person is killed by the highly militarised police force every 28 hours. Scores of black people in the US are stopped and searched every minute for no other reason than the colour of their skin. Blacks constitute 12-13 percent of the US population but 43 percent of its prison population. Although there are only 33 million blacks in the US, there are one million (nearly four percent) of them in jail. Indeed, the incarceration rate of blacks in the US is 10 times that of blacks in apartheid South Africa. According to Michelle Alexander's book, The New Jim Crow, there are double the number of blacks in jail than in college. There are more black people in jail today than were enslaved in 1850; and more blacks are disenfranchised today than in 1875, when the 15th amendment prohibiting discrimination in voting rights based on race was passed. In Obama's hometown of Chicago, the total population of black males with a felony record is 80 percent of the adult black male workforce. The 48 countries of sub-Saharan Africa Obama admonishes have a combined population of 961 million and their total prison population is 830,000. If subSaharan Africa jailed its people at the same rate as the US jails its black population, we would have 38.4 million people in jail.
Dehumanising Africans But these are not the only state abuses in the US. There are mass surveillance programmes that allow the federal government to eavesdrop on almost every communication of American citizens and allies, the indefinite imprisonment without trial and torture of suspects in Guantanamo Bay and other illegal detention facilities around the world. The corruption of Washington and Wall Street - where corporate profits are privatised and losses nationalised - goes without saying. Invading sovereign nations and toppling their governments while leaving chaos in their wake, the large scale use of drones which kill innocent civilians in Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan are the kind of crimes the US commits. This is not an argument of two wrongs making a right. Rather it is to show that Obama's choice to lecture Africa is a product of the social contempt he and his countrymen and women have for black people. Many African leaders do not treat their people with the cruel contempt with which the US treats its black citizens. True some of our leaders use the police against their political rivals. But the US uses its police daily against innocent poor black people who are not even contesting for political power from the white financial, industrial, and military aristocracy that rules that country. Why dehumanise them? Lecturing Africans Contrary to Obama's self-appointed role as the secular priest of good governance, Africans fight for more freedom, democracy, and clean government daily. And in these struggles, the US has consistently sided with our oppressors.
It was complicit in the murder of Patrice Lumumba, supported apartheid South Africa against Nelson Mandela and his African National Congress (ANC, whom it declared terrorists), financed the terrorist organisation National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), and propped up incompetent and corrupt tyrants like Mobutu, Samuel Doe, and Siad Barre. Instead of coming to lecture, Obama should have had the humility to come and apologise to Africans for his country's sadistic adventures on our continent. Indeed, Obama has no moral right to lecture Africans on democracy, human rights, and clean government because his country has been sponsoring corrupt and cruel policies against black people at home and thieving tyrants on our continent. If there are weaknesses in our governance they are ours to struggle against and overcome. Steven Biko, a hero of the antiapartheid struggle, said that the greatest weapon in the hands of an oppressor is never his guns and armies, but the mind of the oppressed. This was clear from the assembled African elites in Addis Ababa who were cheering Obama as he presented himself as the altruist advising our leaders on how to lead us better. Like all imperial powers before it, the US seeks to dominate the world in order to exploit it. This is how it sustains her greedy consumption. But to disguise its intentions, the US rewrites history, employs selective indignation, and chooses arbitrary priorities to present its selfish agenda. Obama being of African ancestry is the best puppet the US uses to disguise its contempt for Africans. But the best he can do is to mind his own business and let us mind ours.
Hollywood's female superhero problem Derrik J. Lang

atman. Spider-Man. Iron Man. Ant-Man. The list of male superheroes starring in their own big-screen escapades is bigger than Tony Stark's ego, and the billions of dollars these films have generated rival the fortunes of the well-off tinkerer. However, in spite of Hollywood's continued fascination with supermen, a new surge of female power could finally electrify the genre and more closely resemble the audiences of comic book adaptations. That's the apparent takeaway from Marvel Studios' latest release, "AntMan." The film concludes with — spoiler alert — Evangeline Lilly's character, Hope Van Dyne, being bestowed with her late mother's prototype superhero suit and alter-ego. When she spots the ensemble, she satisfyingly informs her inventor father, "It's about damn time." It likely is, considering 42 percent of "Ant-Man" ticket buyers on opening weekend were women. "It was always intentional to end the movie that way with Hope saying she's going to be suited up in future adventures," said Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios. "Over the year since we shot that, it's taken on a greater meaning out there in the fan community. It's more relevant now than it's ever been." Over the past seven years of interconnected Marvel superhero movies, female characters who are not codenamed Black Widow have mostly been relegated to the sidelines as love inter-
ests, sidekicks, damsels in distress or all of the above, making Hope's parting words resonate beyond the screen for viewers who've long been dissatisfied with the lack of female superheroes in movies, despite their decades-long histories in comics. Scarlett Johansson's shadowy agent Black Widow is no longer the sole Marvel movie heroine following the introduction of Zoe Saldana's alien assassin Gamora in last year's "Guardians of the Galaxy," Elizabeth Olsen's mindbending Scarlet Witch earlier this year in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and Lilly's winged Wasp at the end of "Ant-Man." "Their intentions are in the right place," Lilly said. "They just have to get there. They're breaking new ground. I'm really honored and excited to be part of that, to be one of the pioneering women within the superhero realm, to represent strong women and put more of a female presence into these movies." Andrea Letamendi, a psychologist and comic book expert who recently participated in a talk at San Diego Comic-Con titled, "Building the Modern (Super)Heroine," was disappointed that the filmmakers stopped short of having Lilly's character actually don the Wasp's get-up and help save the day alongside Ant-Man. "When women don't see ourselves represented in an important role, for instance as a superhero, we begin to question our value in society," said Letamendi. "It's surprising that we're still
considering that, but it's very true. The clinical term for it is symbolic annihilation, and it has a damaging effect, especially on younger audiences." Letamendi commended Marvel for including smart, savvy female characters, such as Thor's astrophysicist girlfriend Jane Foster and Tony Stark's CEO significant other Pepper Potts, in past films, although she said it would be more socially beneficial for viewers to see women serve as actual superheroes or — better yet — lead the charge against all those killer robots and aliens. Financially, solely focusing on female superheroes has never boosted the bottom line for movie studios. "Supergirl," ''Elektra" and "Catwoman" each failed to dazzle audiences or critics, but that was more than a decade ago before the current superhero boom. Since then, the young-adult, female-led adaptations of "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent" series rocketed to the top of the box office, and — as with "Ant-Man" — women accounted for more than 40 percent of the opening weekend crowds for "Age of Ultron" and "Guardians of the Galaxy." Regardless of the recent boost of womankind in Marvel's superhero movie line-up and among theatergoers, the Disney-owned studio isn't planning to release a film centered on a singular female superhero until 2018's "Captain Marvel." In the comics,

the character is portrayed as a female fighter pilot who lands superpowers after a freak extraterrestrial accident. Warner Bros. will actually beat Marvel to punch a year earlier with a "Wonder Woman" film in 2017 starring Gal Gadot. She'll first pop up as the DC Comics character in next year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." The demigod will later join several male superheroes for a two-part "Justice League" film series. Other than the warrior princess and some female anti-heroes in next year's baddie mash-up "Suicide Squad," the forthcoming cinematic take on DC Comics' super-powered population is expected to be just as dominated by characters with XY chromosomes as the Marvelverse, unless the likes of Batgirl, Black Canary or Hawkgirl swoop in. The scenario is similar for Fox's "Fantastic Four," out Aug. 7. The reboot features a lone lady: Kate Mara's Invisible Woman. Conversely, the movie studio's mutant-filled "X-Men" franchise has always featured a mix of male and female characters over the past 15 years, and next year's "X-Men: Apocalypse" edition will star the series' most diverse cast yet. The question of just how female superheroes can fare on their own with modern audiences will be tested later this year, not in theaters but on small screens. CBS' "Supergirl" and Netflix's "Jessica Jones" are set to debut in the fall. If those serialized DC and Marvel adaptations soar on television, perhaps their superhero sisters will on the big screen, as well.

Naga ‘framework agreement’ explained!
The Newspaper with an Opinion The Morung Express
With the recent signing of the peace accord, there has been a torrent of emotions. Many are apprehensive, some are jubilant while many are wisely holding their peace and keeping silent. The world today is a different one with changing values and shifting priorities geared towards securing a more developed lifestyle. However, this can only be secured in a state and an environment that allows the common man to lift himself up through hard work and benefit from the fruit of his earnings. We need Nagaland to be that platform for our people to launch ourselves forward into the modern world. It’s time for governance and it is high time for…

The deal • The govt of India and Naga insurgent group NSCN (IM) signed a peace accord on 3 August • It is a framework agreement that lays the ground for further negotiations • It has been hastened by the ill health of NSCN (IM) leader Isak Swu The crux • Nagas believe they were not part of India, whether through conquest or consent • They declared their independence on 14 August 1947 • Several previous attempts to negotiate have failed The future • Naga groups have agreed to work with the govt to set up a federal relationship • A Pan-Naga Council could be formed across the state lines of Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal and Assam • This would look after the welfare of Naga tribes across the Northeast • Other Naga insurgent groups seem to be on board • The Meiteis of Manipur may form the only roadblock to these proposals The historic peace accord with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), signed on 3 August 2015, has been a long time coming. It was expected that the agreement would be announced in a few months' time. What seems to have hastened it is the indisposition of the chairman of the NSCN (IM), Isak Chishi Swu. He is in a hospital in the Capital, reportedly with multiple organ failure. He is supposed to have signed the agreement while in a wheelchair. Framework put in place This is only a framework agreement. The details of the accord are yet to be fleshed out. It is likely to be followed by more detailed agreements and negotiations. Had the framework agreement not been signed now, a new chairman in place of Isak Swu would have to be elected. Like Swu, he would have to be a Sema from Nagaland, to show Naga unity across states. Thuingaleng Muivah, the General Secretary of NSCN (IM), is a Naga from Manipur. While that would not be a difficult task to accomplish, it would certainly be time consuming. It is widely believed that Q Tuccu, a member of the NSCN (IM)'s collective leadership, fits the bill perfectly and would have been the front-runner among other Semas in the organisation - like AZ Jami, Vikiye Awomi and Tongmath Wangnao - to take Swu's place. However, the internal consultative and consent generating processes that the NSCN (IM) would have to undertake have been shortened by putting a framework agreement in place while Swu is still alive. A grim-looking Muivah, who signed the framework agreement, may have also done so as a special gesture to his ailing long-term friend and comrade. This way, Swu's ambition of bringing honourable peace to the Nagas in his lifetime will also be achieved. Some of the international legal and constitutional experts advising the Naga leaders are scheduled to be in Delhi later this month. They include, among others, Michael von valt Praag, a professor of international law at the Golden Gate University in San Francisco; Yash Ghai, an Indian-origin Kenyan academic of Constitutional Law; and Anthony Reagan, professor of law at the Australian National University. o we call our state a developing or an underdeveloped State? Both do not fit the category; as there is very little to no development to call our state a developing state and yet we have more than abundant resources to refer to ourselves as an underdeveloped State. Constructing buildings for commerce and trade, setting up business franchises etc. are not the mark of development. I could not help but relate the exact unavoidable notch which I find imperative for development of roads in our state. Would u drive a BMW or a Mercedes Benz on a road infested with pot holes every few meters. Or take a stroll through the puddles and muddy sidewalks? The condition of the roads here are pathetic, feeble and distressing. I would rather ride a bicycle over a smooth road than drive a car on such roads. Change has been the most contentious and urgent issue discussed for the past decades in relation with political situation in our State; and yet there is no sign, not even a hint towards a positive shift in our society. To contemplate on this subject is like crying over spilled milk. Our State is in a fix. It is a make it or break it situation. Discussing about the political and economic foundation seems futile as there has been very less progress that can be accounted for. Metaphorically, our State is an egg that has formed into a chick before its time. How long has it been since civilization caught up with Nagaland? Cell phones were practically introduced just a decade back. But we have managed to adapt in coping up with the lifestyle and luxury of others. The standard of living among the common people in Nagalandis not by choice but by constraint. Not everyone can afford to enjoy the luxury of owning a car or a smart phone; which is supposedly the trend of this generation. A rich man by choice lives a normal life, even when he is capable of living in luxury. A normal man works day and night at the office only to fetch enough to survive the month for his family. The anomaly here is quite din. A rich man has the luxury of living the lifestyle of his choicesand the other has no choice but work to make ends meet. Our society is beginning to function in that exact manner. Money was and is always going to be a major concern in our lives. It is true that it is difficult to balance the array of money, but the people should consider their priorities and change their perspective from wants to needs; only then will there be prospect for meaningful living. Money is an asset which cannot be denied and its importance ignored. It is an essential tool which runs our society, thereby making it a necessary evil.No single individual can be blamed for this swift and pathetic development in our State. If we closely look around, we will understand how naïve society has become. We have fallen so low to a point where our morals and virtues are now substituted by a bill. We have fallen prey to the foul and badgering delight of money. It is hysterical when we hear that the government has limited funds which cannot be made use of randomly unless for a definite cause. “The government has no money” they claim. But once we step out of our homes, all we see are construction of private buildings and complexes. Where are these resources to construct such buildings coming from? I dare not comment in this matter. If and when such questions begin to unsettle like it has in mine, I am certain you will understand the whole dynamic of the system. This actually is an abomination to democracy; we are secretly and yet openly being cheated upon. This is where we should be smart and diligent and make our stand. Vote for the right and potent candidate, as democracy itself says that it is a government of the people. We should not be credulous or be swayed away by the contention of money or personal gain. It is just a momentary joy that you find in money during such period. In a society where moral values and ethical culture are solely meditated upon, it has now reached an era of confusion – a confusion conventionally stagnant that many would find it to be a waste of time to ponder upon. Tribalism, nepotism, favoritism and corruption have prominently become the voice of our society, and the fact that our society quietly accepts such practices. Such practices have taken a strong foot hold in our society, creating animosity among our own people, making room for hatred. Our society is in desperate need to abate or even to a possible extent nullify such practices and filter our society with the good old moral values that creates a feeling of oneness amongst us. Our State is surviving like a narrow bridge, which makes it important for us to expand the bridge and make way for a better and prosperous future. There is a merit to all the disadvantages and probes because there can be progress only with better understanding of the mistakes made. I remain optimistic about the future of a better Nagaland.

Suspension of Congress MPs murder of democracy: Sonia
The Morung Express
Thane building crash kills 12
Opposition united in protest against suspension New Delhi, August 4 (iANs): A combative opposition on Tuesday protested inside and outside parliament over the suspension of 25 Congress MPs, with Congress president Sonia Gandhi dubbing the Lok Sabha speaker's decision a "murder" of democracy. The BJP retorted that there was "no democracy in the Congress DNA". Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh and vice president Rahul Gandhi, joined a noisy protest at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the parliament complex -all of them sporting a black band on thier arms. The MPs shouted slogans like "Down with Narendra Modi", "We want justice" and "Shame on you dictator". Similar protests also took place in Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and some other states. The suspension brought together on Tues-
day virtually the entire opposition, with even parties opposed to the Congress boycotting the Lok Sabha in protest against Speaker Sumitra Mahajan's Monday decision. Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav echoed the opposition sentiment when he said: "The suspension is not right. It should be taken back. And the MPs should be called back to attend the house." Rahul Gandhi made it clear that the Congress would not relent on its demand for the resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and the chief ministers of BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. "We will not budge... There will be no let up in our pressure (on the government) as far as issues of corruption, Sushma Swaraj and Vyapam (scandal) are concerned," he said. Sonia Gandhi called the suspension of MPs
"anti-democratic". "It is the duty of the government to run the house. The way our MPs were suspended was anti-democratic. Democracy is being murdered," she said. Rahul Gandhi added: "Vyapam scam has destroyed the lives of thousands. Sushma Swaraj has broken laws, and the Rajasthan chief minister is financially involved with (former IPL chief) Lalit Modi. "The demand for their resignation is not the demand of the Congress but of the entire country." He added: "The PM likes to do 'Mann ki baat'. Instead he should listen to 'Hindustan ki Mann ki baat'." Manmohan Singh said suspending Congress MPs was no way to resolve issues. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said parties like the Trinamool Congress, the Left and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had pledged their support
to his party and vowed to boycott the Lok Sabha. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Samajwadi Party also joined the Congress protest outside parliament. More parties boycotted the Lok Sabha proceedings, including the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of IndiaMarxist, Revolutionary Socialist Party, NCP, Janata Dal-United, Indian Union Muslim League, AAP, Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party. RJD, Samajwadi Party and Left members were present in the house in the morning but walked out after the speaker did not allow them to raise the issue of suspending the Congress MPs. In the Rajya Sabha, the Congress and other opposition parties remained boisterous, leading to the washout of another day's proceedings. Disregarding the sus-
pension of their Lok Sabha colleagues, Congress members in the upper house displayed placards against Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje. Madhusudan Mistry waved a piece of black cloth. Bharatiya Janata Party leader and union minister Prakash Javadekar said: "The Congress talking of democracy is like the devil quoting scriptures. There is no democracy in their DNA... The mother is the party president and the son the vice president. Will they teach us democracy? "Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are responsible for the logjam in parliament." Earlier, the BJP parliamentary party, at a meeting also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, blamed the Congress for days of parliament disruption and accused it of "obstructionism and negativity". The BJP made it clear that none of its leaders would resign.

thANe, August 4 (iANs): Twelve people were killed and 15 others injured when a three-storey building crashed in Naupada area in Maharashtra's Thane city on Tuesday morning, officials said. Krishna Nivas building, built around 50 years ago, collapsed suddenly around 2.30 a.m. while its occupants were asleep. "We were sleeping when suddenly the floor began to move. Even before we could run to safety, the building collapsed with a thunder," a shaken survivor told the media. Fire fighters reached the spot within 20 minutes, followed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and extricated three people from the debris. NDRF deputy commandant S. Gawde said his team of 50 and a sniffer dog rescued another four people from
under the debris. The building had 16 flats, with 5 families living as tenants on the upper floors. The ground floor was vacant. The tenants and landlord were embroiled in a legal dispute and the building had not undergo a regular structural stability test, a Thane Municipal Corporation official said. The official said the building was legal and not dilapidated and there were no complaints regarding structural problems. Thane Collector Ashwini Joshi and Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde and other officials rushed to the site to supervise relief operations. On July 29, the Matruchhaya building collapsed killing 9 occupants and injuring five others in the nearby town of Thakurli.
26/11 attackers trained in Sindh, Rahul on land bill: Govt ran off after 'threatening & shouting' admits former Pakistan intel chief
islAmAbAD, August 4 (iANs): Pakistan must admit its mistakes for allowing Pakistani terrorists to sail to Mumbai and carry out a horrific massacre in 2008, almost bringing Islamabad and New Delhi to war, a former senior Pakistani official said in remarks published on Tuesday. "Pakistan has to deal with the Mumbai mayhem, planned and launched from its soil," Tariq Khosa, a former director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), equivalent of India's CBI, wrote in the Dawn newspaper. "This requires facing the truth and admitting mistakes," he said, detailing the various Pakistani link to the terrorists who massacred 166 Indians and foreigners over three days in India's financial capital. "The entire state security apparatus must ensure that the perpetrators and masterminds of the ghastly terror attacks are brought to justice," Khosa said, underlining that the case had lingered on for far too long. He said dilatory tactics by the defendants, frequent change of trial judges and the assassination of the case prosecutor as well as retracting from original testimony by some key witnesses had proved to be serious setbacks for the prosecutors. Ten Pakistani terrorists sneaked into Mumbai from the sea in November 2008 and carried out a massacre in a wellplanned horror.
One of the terrorists, Ajmal Kasab, was caught and later hanged in India. Security forces killed the others. Islamabad initially denied any links with the attackers but later admitted that Kasab and the masterminds were Pakistani nationals. Khosa pointed out that Kasab was a Pakistani and that the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists who attacked Mumbai were trained near Thatta in Sindh and launched by sea from there. "The training camp was identified and secured by the investigators. The casings of the explosive devices used in Mumbai were recovered from this training camp and duly matched. "Third, the fishing trawler used by the terrorists for hijacking an Indian trawler in which they sailed to Mumbai was brought back to harbour, then painted and concealed. It was recovered by the investigators and connected to the accused. "Fourth, the engine of the dinghy abandoned by the terrorists near Mumbai harbour contained a patent number through which the investigators traced its import from Japan to Lahore and then to a Karachi sports shop from where an LeT-linked militant purchased it along with the dinghy. The money trail was followed and linked to the accused who was arrested. "Fifth, the ops room in Karachi, from where the operation was directed, was also identified and secured by the investigators.
The communications through Voice over Internet Protocol were unearthed. "Sixth, the alleged commander and his deputies were identified and arrested. Seventh, a couple of foreign-based financiers and facilitators were arrested and brought to face trial," Khosa said. Khosa said that the Mumbai case was unique, and that proving conspiracy in a different jurisdiction was more complex and required a far superior quality of evidence. "Therefore, the legal experts from both sides need to sit together rather than sulk and point fingers." He asked: "Are we as a nation prepared to muster the courage to face uncomfortable truths and combat the demons of militancy that haunt our land?" Khosa also flayed India for the "botched investigation" into the Samjhauta Express bombing and the alleged support to the Baloch insurgency as well as the terror financing in Karachi and Fata. "They (India) too have many skeletons in their cupboards. So why fight shy? "Let both India and Pakistan admit their mistakes and follies and learn to co-exist while trying to find solutions to their thorny issues through peaceful means." Khosa said the political and security leadership of Pakistan had resolved to eliminate the scourge of terrorism, militancy and extremism.
New Delhi, August 4 (Pti): Taking a swipe at government over its U-turn on land bill, Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said it "ran off" after "threatening" and shouting" in the face of resistance by Congress and vowed that the party will similarly keep up pressure for resignations in Lalit Modi and Vyapam issues. "On the land issue, Congress stood in front of them. They (government) shouted, made too much noise, threatened and later made a U-turn and ran off," the Congress vice-president said, a day after BJP members in a parliamentary panel moved amendments to restore provisions of the UPA's land law. "Similarly, on the issue of corruption, Vyapam, on the
issue of Rajasthan chief minister and Sushma Swaraj, we will not minimize the pressure on them even if they throw us out of Parliament or do not let us enter Parliament," Rahul said. He made the remarks while agitating with party MPs in Parliament House complex in protest against suspension of its 25 members from Lok Sabha. The Congress MPs faced action after they did now allow the house to function demanding the resignation of external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje for allegedly helping Lalit Modi and Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the Vyapam scam. Rahul said the Congress
will 'gherao' the government on these issues in the entire country. Reacting to the remarks, rural development minister Birender Singh said, "Those who stand at 44 will speak only this language". Congress was reduced to its least tally of 44 seats in Lok Sabha in the last general elections. The barbs from both sides came as the government expressed readiness to accept recommendations of the panel on land bill, which restored provisions of the UPA law, insisting that it was not a climbdown as it was always open to changes on which there is consensus. All 11 BJP members moved amendments in joint committee of Parliament seeking to bring back key provisions of
113 cases of attacks against journalists in 2014: Govt New Delhi, August 4 (Pti): A total of 113 cases of grievous hurt and attack on journalists were reported from across the country last year, the government told Parliament on Tuesday. While the maximum cases of attack against media persons were reported from Uttar Pradesh at 63, the highest number of people arrested for these crimes, at 10, were reported to be from Madhya Pradesh during the same time period. Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary, in a written reply to Lok Sabha, also said that the National Crime Records Bureau has started collecting data on attack on media persons under grievous hurt category since 2014. "Data on murder of journalists is not
maintained separately. As per available data, a total of 113 cases were registered and 30 persons were arrested under attack on media person (grievous hurt) during 2014," he said. The data provided by the Minister said there were 22 cases registered by the police for attack on media in Bihar, 7 in Madhya Pradesh, 5 in Maharashtra, three each in Jharkhand and Gujarat, four in Andhra Pradesh and two each in Assam and Tripura, among others. While six people were arrested for these crimes in Maharashtra, four each were apprehended in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh respectively and three in Bihar among others. Interestingly, the Minister's reply said no data was received from
Banning won't work, sex education will: Experts New Delhi, August 4 (iANs): Terming the government's crackdown on 857 pornographic websites an "act in haste", the country's top sex and behavioural experts have favoured making sex education mandatory for young Indian teenagers so that crimes like rape or child molestation can be efficiently curbed. According to them, a crackdown is not the solution as adults have a right to watch porn in the privacy of their homes and that right should not be taken away. "Banning porn websites is not the solution at all. Educating the youth about what sex and related behaviours are must be on the agenda of the present government,” Dr Prakash Kothari, one of India's leading sexologists based in Mumbai, told IANS. The ministry of communications and information and technology, in its order of July 31 under section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act 2000, banned the 857 websites terming their content "immoral and indecent". The ban will only result in a boom for the pirated porn industry, experts say. "One doubts if this ban can
Service providers asked to review 857 banned websites New Delhi, Aug 4 (iANs): The government on Tuesday asked the internet service providers (ISP) to review the ban on 857 websites, which were blocked as pornography sites and lift the ban on non-porn ones. "The government has asked the ISPs to go through the 857 sites again as the government has received complaints that some of the sites which are banned are of non-pornographic nature," an official source told IANS. "If the ISPs come across such sites, which are non-pornographic then the government will ask them to lift the ban on those," the source added. The decision was taken after Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad held a meeting with the officials of telecom and information technology department. Speaking on the ban, Prasad had said on Monday that they were "not a control-freak government and strongly object to the word 'Talibanisation'." He also said these bans are temporary measures till final orders are taken by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court in its observation on the issue on July 8 had said banning such sites would be violation of an individual's right to liberty. The apex court is slated to take up the matter on August 10. be a fool-proof solution. It will probably increase the sale of pirated porn DVDs. that some adult websites have links that lead to child pornography and those must be dealt sternly with,” noted Dr Samir Parikh, director of mental health and behavioural sciences at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi. Objectification of women and child abuse are growing in our society, says Dr Parikh, but there has to be a proper mechanism to ensure that young adults do not get easy access to porn. "With the proliferation of technology, kids have easy access to porn and related materials and this issue has to be brought to the fore,” he contended. Owing to the growth in the smartphone sector, online porn viewing is going to see an explosion in the next five years, a recent study said. According to Britain-based digital market research specialist firm Juniper Research, online porn watching will grow by nearly 42 percent in the next five years. The porn video hits will grow to 193 billion a year by 2020 from around 136 billion this year, it said. Growth is taking place in the video chat and webcam content area in the global porn industry

"In the absence of proper sex education, ignorance prevails because porn is a doubleedged sword," said Dr Sudhakar Krishnamurti, director of worldfamous Andromeda Andrology Centre in Hyderabad. "Responsibility lies with all the stakeholders -- government, media houses, social scientists, doctors, teachers -- to ensure that sex education becomes the key to tackle rising cases of sexual abuse,” Dr Parikh stressed. According to Dr Sameer Malhotra, director of the department of mental health and behavioural sciences at Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, “age-appropriate and sensitively handled sex education can help in preventing risky behaviour and addressing myths" associated with sexual issues. "Sex education will actually limit porn viewing among adults,” said Dr Manish Jain, senior consultant (psychiatrist) at BLK Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi. Indian rapper's toxic waste gibes goes viral mumbAi, August 4 (ReuteRs): An Indian rapper has gone viral with a music video calling on consumer products giant Unilever to clean up alleged toxic waste from a forested southern hill station. Sofia Ashraf's video, posted online by a nongovernmental organization called Jhatkaa, or "shock" in Hindi, has had more than a million views on YouTube, drawing attention to accusations against a thermometer factory in the town of Kodaikanal that closed down 14 years ago. Hindustan Unilever, the Indian subsidiary of the consumer goods company, has denied wrongdoing. It disputes claims of former workers who say their health has been damaged by exposure to mercury. The company said it shut down the factory in 2001 when environmental activists including Greenpeace "brought to Hindustan Unilever's attention the fact that glass scrap containing mercury" had been sold to a scrap dealer about three kilometres from the factory. "We have been rigorous in establishing the facts and several independent expert studies have concluded that there were no adverse impacts on the health of our people at Kodaikanal. We have also taken action to ensure the clean-up of soil within the factory premises," a Hindustan Unilever spokesperson said in an email. "There is still work to do here - which we are committed to fulfilling - as soon as we have received final consent from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to start the soil remediation." Set to the beat of Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda", and retweeted by Minaj herself, Ashraf also asks Unilever to compensate workers. "Kodaikanal won't step down, until you make amends now," she raps.

A-bomb survivors speak out against nuke power Kosovo votes for new FUKUSHIMA CITY, AUgUST 4 (ReUTeRS): When Atsushi Hoshino set out to revive a group representing atomic bomb survivors in the rural northeast Japanese prefecture of Fukushima 30 years ago, one topic was taboo - criticising the nuclear power industry upon which many relied for jobs. That changed dramatically after March 11, 2011, when a massive tsunami devastated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, triggering meltdowns, spewing radiation and forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes. “Until then ...I felt somewhat uncomfortable about nuclear power, but not enough to oppose it. Rather, I was in a situation where it wasn’t possible to oppose it,” Hoshino, 87, told Reuters at his home in Fukushima City, about 60 km (37 miles) from the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi plant, the country’s first commercial nuclear plant when it went online in 1971. Now, Hoshino, a survivor of the Aug. 6, 1945, U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima, is among the majority of Japanese who oppose Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s plan to reboot reactors taken offline after the Fukushima disaster. Kyushu Electric Power Co’s Sendai plant in southwestern Japan is expected to resume operations on

Aug. 10, the first to do so in nearly two years. “I think that since the risk of nuclear power and the fact that human beings cannot control it has become clear, none of the reactors should be restarted,” Hoshino said. Akira Yamada, chairman of Fukushima’s atomic bomb survivors group, says he reached a similar conclusion. Still, both men are wary of comparing the risks of nuclear power to the horror of atomic weapons. “There is a difference between military use and peaceful use,” Yamada, who like Hoshino became a professor at Fukushima

Nagasaki survivor Yoshiteru Kohata, 86, who returned to his birthplace in Fukushima a few years after the war’s end, says he long tried to forget the days after the bombing, when he helped injured and carried corpses up to the mountains for burial. Recounting his experiences, such as hearing a young woman screaming “Please stop, Please stop,” as an army doctor operated on her wounds without anaesthetic, still distresses him. “Even now, when I tell the story, tears well up and my chest gets tight,” added Kohata, a retired schoolteacher. Doomed To Lose Yamada, 89, who was at home 2.5 km from the centre of the explosion when the bomb fell on Hiroshima, filling the sky with black clouds and red flames, says he knew early on that Japan was doomed to lose the war. While Yamada was in middle school, his cousin, one year older, decided to apply to Yokaren, an Imperial Navy pilot school that ultimately trained many of the “kamikaze” pilots who flew suicide missions in the final months of the conflict. “I told him, ‘Give it up. Japan cannot win this war’.”
His cousin joined anyway and in February 1945 came to say farewell. “’We have no gasoline. We have no planes. All I can do is die’. You stay alive and work for Japan’,” Yamada quoted his cousin as saying. Two months after Japan’s surrender, the family was notified that his cousin had died in the bloody battle of Iwo Jima. Kohata said he, too, might have flown to his death had not an army colonel told him not to quit school and train as a pilot. “There were many who died at the age of 16,” he said. Like many “hibakusha” survivors, Yamada, Hoshino and Kohata are harsh critics of Abe, whose conservative agenda includes easing the constraints of Japan’s pacifist, post-war constitution on the military and adopting a less apologetic tone over the war. Abe is set to mark the 70th anniversary of the war’s end with a statement that some fear will dilute past apologies. “If you delve into the atomic bombings which had such inhumane results, it was because we fought that ... war of aggression,” Yamada said, calling Japan’s wartime leaders “murderers”. “But Mr. Abe is not delving deeply.” Hoshino was even blunter. “I don’t think Shinzo Abe ... truly recognises that the war was a criminal war of aggression.”

loNdoN, AUgUST 4 (IANS): The intense ice loss of the past two decades has resulted in a strong imbalance of glaciers in many regions of the world, says an alarming study, indicating that glaciers will suffer further ice loss even if the climate remains stable. “The observed glaciers currently lose between half a metre and one metre of its ice thickness every year. This is two to three times more than the corresponding average of the 20th century,” explained Michael Zemp, director of the World Glacier Monitoring Service at University of Zurich, Switzerland, and lead author of the study. Exact measurements of this ice loss are reported from a few hundred glaciers only. “However, these results are qualitatively confirmed from field and satellite-based observations for tens of thousands of glaciers around the world,” he added. According to the team, the current rate of glacier melt is without precedence at global scale, at least for the time period observed and probably also for recorded history. In addition, the study shows that the long-term retreat of glacier tongues is a global phenomenon. Glacier tongues in Norway have retreated by some kms from its maximum extents in the 19th century. The World Glacier Monitoring Service has compiled worldwide data on glacier changes for more than 120 years. It just published a new comprehensive analysis of global glacier changes in the Journal of Glaciology.
official announced his resignation on Tuesday amid a growing leadership struggle in the Afghan insurgent movement after the news of the death of leader Mullah Mohammad Omar last week. The swift announcement that Omar’s longtime deputy, Mullah Mohammad Akhtar Mansour, would be the new leader has riled many senior figures angry about the implication that Mansour covered up Omar’s death for more than two years. The infighting could split the Taliban and threatens tentative peace talks with the Kabul government to end 13 years of war that began with a U.S.led campaign after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. Since Mansour’s appointment was announced by the Taliban leadership council based in Quetta, Pakistan, it has been denounced by several top members of the group, including Omar’s brother, who has called for an assembly to choose the leader. On Tuesday, Taliban official Syed Mohammad Tayab Agha announced he was stepping down as director of the
KAbUl, AUgUST 4 (IANS): The son of late Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar has reportedly been killed, sections of the Afghan media reported on Tuesday. “Mullah Yaqub, the son of Mullah Omar, was killed a couple of days ago,” the Daily Outlook reported quoting lawmaker Zahir Qadir. Mullah Yaqub, according to Qadir, had attempted to succeed his father to lead Taliban fighters but was mysteriously assassinated by Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor, who has already been appointed by his supporters to lead the Taliban group. The private television channel Tolo has also reported Mullah Yaqub’s death, also quoting lawmaker Qadir. Taliban militants have not commented on the report. Cracks have appeared in the Taliban ranks since the death of their leader Mullah Mohammad Omar which was confirmed by Taliban outfit on Thursday. Some Taliban senior leaders, including Mullah Hassan Rahmani and Mullah Razaq Akhund have challenged Mullah Mansoor’s legitimacy to lead the Taliban while Mansoor’s supporters have been lobbying to convince the militants make allegiance to the new leader. Political Office in the Qatari capital Doha, originally set up to enable the Taliban to negotiate in any peace process. Agha said he considered the decision to conceal Omar’s death - generally attributed to Mansour - a “historic mistake by the individuals concerned”. “Now, as the leader is appointed outside the country and from the people who are residing outside the country
is also considered as a great historical mistake,” he said in a statement. He said previous leaders appointed outside the country going back to the invasion by Soviet forces, and the government set up after the Taliban were ousted, had “very bad repercussions”. The leader should be appointed “in presence of the courageous mujahideen in their strongholds inside the
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said he could not confirm the statement came from Agha but two senior members of the Qatar office confirmed he had resigned on Monday. “Relations between Mullah Mansour and Tayyab Agha had never been friendly even when Mullah Omar was alive,” said another Taliban member, who is close to Agha. He said Mansour’s decision to send his delegation to the first official peace talks between Taliban and Afghan government representatives last month in Pakistan had bypassed Agha, the head of the negotiating team in Qatar. Considered close to Pakistan, Mansour faces a challenge to hold the movement together with hardline commanders pressing for an end to talks and the continuation of fighting. It remains difficult to assess how serious a threat Mansour faces but the difficulties point to a suspension of the peace process while his position is consolidated. Several commanders are known to have stopped fighting until the situation is clarified.

T
he 193 member states of the United Nations have reached agreement on a new development agenda for the next 15 years that calls for eradicating poverty and hunger, achieving gender equality, improving living standards and taking urgent action to combat climate change. The draft agreement reached Sunday evening outlines 17 goals with 169 specific targets on issues ranging from ending poverty “in all its forms everywhere” to ensuring quality education and affordable and reliable energy, and protecting the
environment. “We can be the first generation that ends global poverty, and the last generation to prevent the worst impacts of global warming before it is too late,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters Monday. The document — called “Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” — will be adopted at a U.N. summit just before the annual meeting of world leaders at the General Assembly in late September. More than 160 world leaders are on the provisional speakers list for the three-day summit starting Sept. 25 which was released Monday including the presidents of China, Russia, Iran and France. Ban said “the goals represent a ‘to-do’ list for people and the planet.” “They address the requirements for all humanity to be able to live decent lives free from poverty, hunger and inequality,” he said. “They commit all of us to be responsible global citizens, caring for the less fortunate as well as for our planet’s ecosystems and
climate action on which all life depends.” The 17 new, non-binding goals will succeed the eight Millennium Development Goals adopted by world leaders 15 years ago. Elaine Geyer-Allely, who monitored the U.N. negotiations for WWF, the world’s largest independent conservation organization, said the new plan is a significant improvement because it recognizes that protecting the environment, eradicating poverty and promoting economic growth and well-being are interlinked. Amina Mohammed, the U.N. special advisor on the post-2015 agenda, said more than 8,000 people engaged in setting the new goals, including for the first time representatives from hundreds of organizations, business, parliaments and youth in addition to government officials. In his final report last month on the Millennium Development Goals, Ban said the effort has helped lift more than one billion people out of extreme poverty over the last 15 years, enabled more girls
to go to school than ever before, and brought unprecedented results in fighting diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Despite significant progress on all the MDGs, the only original goal that was achieved ahead of time was cutting in half the number of people living in extreme poverty, and that was due primarily to economic growth in China. Ban stressed inequality remains, with 80 percent of the people living on less than $1.25 a day located in southern Asia and subSaharan Africa, and 60 percent in just five countries, India, Nigeria, China, Bangladesh and Congo. Agreement on the new goals is the culmination of more than three years of intense and complex negotiations. Sticking points in the negotiations, which were supposed to be completed Friday, included differences over references to good governance, reproductive rights for women and occupied territories — and on how to refer to climate change ahead of the De-
cember summit in Paris which will hopefully adopt a legally binding climate agreement to keep global warming from reaching dangerous levels. Two key issues are cost and implementation. Kenya’s U.N. Ambassador Macharia Kamau, one of the facilitators of the negotiations, said implementing the goals will cost between $3.5 trillion and $5 trillion every year, which he insisted is “not unattainable” because most money will come from domestic resources raised in countries, complemented by international development assistance. “There is no reason why we can’t see remarkable transformation,” he said. Ireland’s U.N. Ambassador David Donoghue, the other facilitator, said that even though the goals are political “don’t underestimate the impact on governments” which will be subject to peer pressure and regular monitoring on implementation. “They do represent a new way of doing business,” he said. “It is highly significant.”
war crimes court
PRISTINA, AUgUST 4 (ReUTeRS): Kosovo’s parliament voted to change the constitution on Monday and create a war crimes court, which the West wants to try ethnic Albanian former guerrillas for alleged war crimes including organ harvesting. The vote was held just one month after parliament first tried to approve the creation of the court, seen by many Kosovo Albanians as an attempt to tarnish their 1998-99 guerrilla war against Serbian rule. The constitutional changes were endorsed by 82 deputies in the 120-seat parliament. “Finding the truth about some allegations from during and after the war is a challenge that we have to deal with,” Prime Minister Isa Mustafa told legislators before the vote. The now-disbanded Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), which counts among its former ranks much of Kosovo’s current political elite, has been dogged for years by allegations it removed organs from ethnic Serb captives, who were then killed and their organs sold on the black market. Kosovo’s chief diplomatic and financial backers, the United States and the European Union, have pressed Kosovo to address the accusations. They said that failure to create the court risks seeing the issue taken up by the United Nations Security Council and the inevitable involvement of Serbia’s big-power ally Russia, which opposes Kosovo sovereignty. Later in the day the parliament passed a law to create special court chambers and the prosecution office. The parliament also approved a new law to finance defence for all people that may be charged by the court but it remains unclear when the first indictments will be filed. After a decade of passive resistance, the KLA took up arms against forces of the late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic in the late 1990s, eventually winning NATO air support to halt the killing and expulsion of ethnic Albanian civilians. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and has been recognised by over 100 states, but not by Serbia or Russia. The new court will be located in the Netherlands, due to concerns over witness intimidation and judicial corruption in Kosovo. Former prime minister and wartime KLA commander, Ramush Haradinaj, was among those in parliament who opposed the court. “By approving this court we are turning ourselves into a monster. During the war we were not monsters, we were victims,” said Haradinaj, who now heads the opposition Alliance for the Future of Kosovo. The new court will be under Kosovo law but financed by the European Union and all prosecutors and judges will be foreigners. The embassies of the EU member states and United States welcomed the vote. “By dealing with its past and ensuring justice for the victims, Kosovo can achieve reconciliation and build a better future,” the embassies said in a joint statement.

Angel Di Maria accepts 4-year deal with PSG
PARIs, August 4 (AP): Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria will join Paris Saint-Germain on a four-year deal to become the second most expensive player in the French league history. A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that Di Maria is expected in Paris later this week to sign the deal after undergoing a medical exam in Doha on Monday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak publicly about the deal before it is official. Manchester United has agreed to sell the Argentina winger for a fee that is "in the region of 63 million euros ($69 million)" the person said. At PSG, the versatile Di Maria will be teaming up with Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, who joined the Qatarifunded club for a reported fee of 64 million euros when PSG broke the French transfer record in 2013. The former Real Madrid midfielder joined United for 59.7 million pounds ($99 million) last summer as the most expensive signing in the history of British football, but he had an inconsistent season at Old Trafford. Di Maria got off to a bright start early in the season then struggled to
adapt to the Premier League. The man of the match in the 2014 Champions League final was quickly reduced to a second-fiddle role in Louis van Gaal's side and ended the season with a meager tally of three goals in 27 Premier League appearances. However, his 10 assists were only bettered by Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas. Di Maria, who will be reunited with Argentina teammates Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Lavezzi in Paris, did show signs of his very best with his national team at the Copa America, where Argentine finished runner-ups this summer. PSG, whose main goal this season is to win the Champions League, will be counting on his energy, incisive dribbles and ability to run with the ball at pace to reach a new level on the European scene, where the French champions failed to advance beyond the quarterfinals over the past two seasons. He will give PSG coach Laurent Blanc plenty of offensive options, either on the left side of the midfield or in a more central role. PSG started to court Di Maria last summer but UEFA financial fair play restrictions, that have since been eased, prevented his transfer to the French capital.
UEFA dismisses Fenerbahce protest over Shakhtar doping case
nYon, August 4 (AP): UEFA says it dismissed Fenerbahce's protest against Shakhtar Donetsk fielding a player in a Champions League qualifying match who previously tested positive for doping at the Copa America. The 0-0 result stands for the teams' third qualifying round, firstleg match in Turkey last week ahead of the return match on Wednesday in Lviv, Ukraine. UEFA says Shakhtar's Brazil midfielder Fred had not been suspended by
South American confederation CONMEBOL when the first leg was played. Still, Fred is unlikely to play on Wednesday because of the doping case. Fred tested positive for a banned diuretic with Brazil at the Copa America in Chile in June. The substance, hydrochlorothiazide, can hide the presence of other drugs. Shakhtar acknowledged selecting Fred to face Fenerbahce in Istanbul against UEFA advice.

ven before our children are aware of stealing, we (the parents) have started to teach them how to steal (knowingly or unknowingly). Just look at ourselves at the time of scholarship applications (both pre & post matric) scholarship. When the government has introduced a policy to help the poor students for pursuing further studies it has rather become a very good opportunity to consider ourselves so poor that we profess to be earning below Rupees One Lakh annually (including many government officials of 1st class gazette status). I must confess that when I was young I also applied and received without realizing, but now that I’ve realized and my family will never allow our children to apply for one on the pretext that our income is below one lakh (Not say that we are rich but to speak the truth understanding that God is providing enough for us to meet our daily needs which accounts to more than One Lakh in Rupees annually. Let only those who deserve be left alone. Our Church leaders need to live, lead and speak the truth and so do the members including me. If our Church leaders don’t follow the teachings of the Bible how can they expect the members? Naga-
land being a Christian dominated state the Church plays a very important role in leading the people so that our society becomes healthy & full of life. I am all out for our church leaders to be given a comfortable/judicious package (Salary, quarter etc. so) that they can without unnecessary struggle, serve the Church which is the body of Christ. It is not a bad idea for any Church to have a good/ palatial church building or a Mahindra Bolero/ Scorpio etc, it is for the benefit for all the members in particular and the Christians in general but that may not necessarily contribute to the kind of Church which God wants because God’s plan for a good and healthy Church is primarily not in the infrastructures but in the Action and the fruits that follows. God did not take tell us that we should compromise with all those facilities at the expense of His teachings. The leaders should make every effort to maintain the sanctity of the church (according to Biblical principles). Today, many of our Church leaders have compromised the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ whom we profess to be worshipping, many of our leaders rather have sought/ seeking facilities in the wrong way (from ministers, MLA’s, rich members of the Church etc). How much can God
really trust our church leaders today? It is awful and shocking that many Church leaders today don’t even feel guilty to speak things which they do not practice. Many have become just professionals. In some churches, some have even started to use their untruthful Matric certificate (age/ DoB) for determining their length of their service with the excuse that everyone is using the same even in government jobs. But that is not true, everyone is not using a manipulated certificate including me and our families because truth is what our principle of life is build upon. We still have many Nagas who live in TRUTH, whose principle is HONESTY & JUSTICE. Is God more concerned for ones length of our service or our service based on His teachings and principles? Almost every Naga is a Christian; at least by name, but look at our roads, electricity, Schools, Hospitals etc. Where is all our money (meant for development) going? When our bureaucrats and politicians desire to do anything even that which are against the law even the law is silent, but when the common people protest for being subjugated they say ‘it is against the law etc’. May God be the judge, even the law of the land will not forget the hypocrites and wicked, time will speak.
Common man/layman like me also should be willing to listen to my leaders and be responsible citizens or at least live according to the principles upon which once our forefathers lived. For even our instincts/ intuition tells us what is right or wrong. For the Amazing Nagaland that God has designed, our Church leaders should live in truth and love, Social workers and politicians should have an unbiased attitude; business people should have honesty and dedication, National workers to the pledge they’ve made to when joining and all of us having moral integrity, Justice and love as our principle which will make us fearless and shine like stars in this depraved and crooked generation. To be able to live in that NAGALAND which we always talk and dream of, I need to change now, because nobody can force anybody to change and it is now or never. May our merciful God forgive us all once again and help us to live according to His teachings. Naga Youth, let us stop blaming each other or feel sorry for ourselves, rather let us wake up and rebuild our society otherwise we are losing our future. Changing Lives, Changing the World
E
veryone of the present generation realize the need and importance of CHANGE in our society. From a mere public to the great leaders in the present social, economic, religious and political dispensation, mighty talks about the express need of CHANGE have been echoed through public platforms, social networking groups and print media. Sadly, the effects of these “talks sans action” have had little/or no impact. Here’s this writer’s perspective on how to effect a change in our part of the World. We read that the great empires and governments, and wars change the course of history and the face of the World, so sometimes we’re discouraged and think, “Well, who am I? What can I do? It all seems hopeless and IMPOSSIBLE! It looks like there’s nothing that one person can do to change things for the better, so what’s the use of trying, what’s the use of trying anything?”- and we are tempted to give up and let the world go to HELL , which it sometimes seem to deserve. But despair not, and don’t give! The foundation of Change we desire lies within us... If you have changed one life (maybe your life), you have change a part of the world, and you have proven that there is a hope and that it can ALL be changed! If one life can be changed then there’s a possibility that more lives can be changed, whole locality/region can be changed and the World can be changed, starting with just one person---maybe you! You say, you can’t change the World? It’s too late, too bad, too big, and just too difficult? Well, why don’t you start with your OWN HEART, your OWN MIND, your OWN SPIRIT, your OWN LIFE? If you’ve even changed
your life, you’ve changed a whole universe, the UNIVERSE OF YOUR LIFE. The place and the atmosphere around you will be changed. Change not only your own life but those of your OWN FAMILY, of your OWN HOME! You’ll then have a new home, a new family, with new lives and new spirits filled with the truth and life and love of God. Then the whole home will have been changed, and that’s a whole world, YOUR WORLD! Then your little family can start trying to change the NEIGHBOURS and YOUR FRIENDS, BUSINESS ASSOCIATES or SCHOOLMATES, VISITORS etc. you can start individually, personally, just YOU, your little family, just planting SEEDS one by one, in heart by heart, day by day into that empty hole of an empty heart. It may seem only a little bud at first, just little sprig just one insignificant little green shoot. What is that to the forest that is needed? Well, IT’S A BEGINNING. It’s a beginning of the miracle of a new life and it will thrive and grow and flourish and become strong, turning into a whole tree, a whole new life, and perhaps a whole new world! SO WHY NOT TRY IT? YOU say you can’t change the World and wait for others or the World to change? - Well, why don’t you try? Why don’t you try changing your part of the World, the World of your life- your family, your neighbors, your town, and JUST SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!! WHEN you do what you are supposed to do, day by day, hole by hole, heart by heart, you are bound to reap a harvest. Not all may grow, but surely some would grow healthy to give you a rich harvest. model who is set to become the first ever deaf person to compete in hit reality series America's Next Top Model has revealed why he refuses to let his disability stop him from reaching the top of the fashion industry. Nyle DiMarco, 25, is set to feature on the upcoming 22nd season of the hit CW series, which was created by supermodel Tyra Banks. But while some might believe he is at a disadvantage when compared with his co-stars, the Washington-based model insists that his disability actually makes him all the more unique. 'I strongly believe that being deaf gives me a huge advantage because of my native language, American Sign Language (ASL),' Nyle revealed to Washington Life. 'ASL requires the use of facial expressions and body language expressions. With the rules of ASL immersed into my soul, it helps to bring out stories when [I'm] modeling for a photo, and makes for an interesting character when [I'm] acting.' And, perhaps unsurprisingly, the fact that Nyle is deaf certainly isn't the first thing that people notice about the budding model, who was contacted by the producers of America's Next Top Model after they saw him guest-starring in hit sitcom Switched at Birth. 'The show found me through my accounts on social media and models.com, which is where I showcase my work,' Nyle explained. 'I use my success both to inspire other people who are deaf and to raise awareness,' he explained to Washington LIfe. 'There are many beautiful deaf people out there but the agencies and photographers think we’re not able to model, let alone collaborate. 'I am here to raise awareness and change that perspective and prove that deaf people can model and collaborate to create something beautiful.' Nyle's twin brother Nico agrees, explaining to DHN: 'It's amazing that he can show what deaf people can do, and that really we don't have a glass ceiling whatsoever. 'People kept bugging him about modeling and about doing it more but he didn't care too much about it, and always shrugged it off. But after trying it for a bit, he realized that he was really good at it.'

mber Heard is reportedly receiving a hefty amount of money from Johnny Depp as her monthly allowance, following the news that she referred herself as "fiercely independent" for the July issue of a magazine. The 29 year old actress is reportedly receiving $25,000 every month from her husband, which she can spend on whatever she pleases, according to The Record. The site revealed that an insider told Star Magazine, "[She] can easily blow through her designated monthly allowance - rumoured to be $25,000 and he won't say a word because he's afraid of losing her." The Magic Mike XXL star recently posed for the July issue of Elle Magazine, where she told the tabloid that she is "fiercely independent." Talking about married life, Amber told Elle, "Nothing is a dramatic change. We've been together for a long time now, so it's been a fairly organic process. Adding, "I have a fiercely independent spirit" Johnny Depp's wife also admits that she fears of losing her freedom that fame might take over her life, which she worked so hard to acquire for herself.

Rene's treatment and fight has been very hard on Celine and the couple's three children - 14-year-old son, Rene, and four-year-old fraternal twins Eddy and Nelson - but she has been able to find perspective and strength from her ''spirituality''. Speaking to Taste of Life magazine, Celine - who was raised a Roman Catholic - revealed: ''Life is not always perfect. You have to deal with it. Whatever life imposes - sickness, or whatever, you don't have a choice. This is life, this is nature. But you do have the choice on how you're going to go through this. And if you don't have spirituality you're going to fall apart before things happen. I am very spiritual. I believe in myself, I believe in my family, and I'm positive. Through this, you show your children how to deal with things, and how to be strong.'' Celine took a break from her residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel and Casino but is due back on stage on August 27.

igi Hadid has been named The World's Most Connected Supermodel by W Magazine. The 20-year-old beauty has been given the title because of her incredible influence on social media with 5 million Instagram followers, but she insists she's reluctant to ''force her career'' on to other people. She said: ''All the companies I work for want me to guarantee how much I'll post for them. But I'm not going to force my career onto the people who follow me. I refuse to do 40 Instagram posts about any campaign.'' The stunning blonde who, along with pals Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne, is taking the modelling world by storm - is also adamant she's more than just a pretty face. She told the magazine: ''I have always been aware of the business side of the industry. I've always seen it as a career that required work and planning.'' Meanwhile, Gigi previously confessed she has no problem with being photographed in the nude following her raunchy campaign for Tom Ford's Velvet Orchid fragrance. She said: ''I've never been scared of being naked in pictures, but I wouldn't do naked for naked's sake. ''With Tom, it was an easy decision. When you think of scent, you don't think of clothes. ction star Jackie Chan said today that he wants to work with his son Jaycee on a movie and an album as they mend their relationship after Jaycee was jailed on a drug charge. Jaycee Chan was released from a 6-month prison sentence in February after pleading guilty to allowing others to use marijuana at his Beijing apartment. Jackie Chan said prison was good for his son because it made him mature and that their relationship has changed for the better. Before, "I was too Chinese, traditional - you, son, go away, I don't want to
help you, you have to help yourself," Chan said in an interview in Beijing. When filming the remake of The Karate Kid alongside Will Smith's teenage son Jaden Smith, Chan said he was struck seeing Will "helping his son to be in a movie, every day on the set." "I say why am I so stubborn? I have to help my son," Chan said. The Hong Kong actor said he was looking for suitable movie projects for Jaycee, 32, and in the meantime his son would produce one of his records, expected out at the end of the year. He
also said he hoped Jaycee would sing a duet with him on one of the tracks. "Probably there is one song that we will sing to each other," said Chan, adding that in it he would apologize for ignoring Jaycee when he was young. "I say 'sorry, I was busy at that time.'" Chan said he wasn't sure his actor-singer son would go for it, and that he might have to find somebody to sing it for him. He said Jaycee wrote songs and scripts and read a lot of books in prison, and joked that a bit of prison time might be good for a lot of people.
he news of Chinese actress Xu Jinglei freezing her eggs in the US has become a hot topic of online debates as the process is considered taboo, the media reported on Monday. Her action has sparked a debate over the safety and usefulness of egg freezing, the People's Daily reported. "The only thing I regret is that I am a little bit late in doing so," said Xu Jinglei, the 41-year-old Chinese director and actress, adding that storing the eggs was the only way for her to make up for the potential mistake if she failed to get married and have a baby due to her age-related decline in fertility. China has no major technological obstacles to successful egg freezing, but so far, only couples with infertility problems are eligible to apply. According to Chinese regulations, freezing eggs solely for the purpose of preserving or extending fertility, surrogacy and trading in ova are illegal. Experts are also warning that postponing pregnancy can lead to a host of problems and are urging potential mothers to think carefully before opting for such techniques.

The couple are asking for joint custody of their three children, nineyear-old Kingston, six-yearold Zuma and 17-monthold Apollo, gossip website TMZ reports. The news may shock fans as Gwen previously admitted she thinks ''it's a miracle'' they are still together because she thought she was out of his league when he was younger. She said: ''We go through so much together -- it's a miracle that we could stay together this long. ''I don't know if I was a nerd in high school, but I definitely wasn't the
super-cute cheerleader so I never saw myself getting somebody like that. But I do think he's quite handsome. It's not the most important thing about him, but it is nice -- and he makes really cute babies!'' And Gwen also cited spending time apart as a good thing for the pair's relationship. She explained: ''[Gavin's] on a short tour right now, and he wrote me the sweetest note this morning. It's good to have those days when we both do our own things. ''I think that's what keeps relationships going, when both people can be themselves and have their own individuality. That's especially important for women. It's hard to find time for yourself.''
Adidas defend Man United's new kit amid sexism claims

LoNdoN, August 4 (AgENCIEs): Manchester United's new kit supplier Adidas has defended itself against claims the design of the new Manchester United female jersey is sexist. The sportswear giant unveiled United's home strip for the new season on August 1, but came in for criticism from some quarters for the low neckline which features on the women's shirt. However, an Adidas spokesperson said: “Adidas provides an adult shirt which is a replica of what the players wear. “Based on research from fans, we also offer a women’s shirt as part of our lifestyle range of products. "This range has a slightly different design and fit to give fans a choice.” Despite the criticism received by Adidas, some supporters defended the shirt, with United fan Natalie Dickinson posting a photo of her wearing the shirt. She said: "I love my shirt. Makes a nice change as I usually feel like I'm being strangled by t-shirts/football shirts. "It's actually quite flattering as it's not as if they don't have the choice of buying the men's one instead."
Van der Burgh heats up chilly New offside rule introduced for EPL swim prelims with world record
KAZAN, August 4 (AP): Cameron van der Burgh heated up a chilly Tuesday morning at the swimming world championships by improving his own world record in the 50-meter breaststroke. The South African won his one-lap heat in 26.62 seconds, shaving five hundredths off his previous mark established in a nowbanned rubberized suit at the 2009 worlds in Rome. Van der Burgh celebrated by propping himself up on a lane rope and pointing his arms up, then he bowed to the crowd and flexed his biceps after climbing out of the pool. It's the first men's world record to fall at this meet after four women's marks were set on the opening two days. "It's nice to be joining the ladies for a bit of the fun," Van der Burgh said. Britain's Adam Peaty also swam 26.62 at the European Championships in Berlin last August but that mark was not ratified by governing body FINA because he was not tested at the time for the bloodbooster EPO. It was a simple administrative error because a box was not checked on the drug-testing form, FINA officials said. Peaty qualified second in 26.68, winning the last of nine heats. "Just went out there and had fun and didn't take it that seriously," Peaty said. "There's definitely more in there tonight and hopefully more tomorrow." Peaty came from behind to edge Van der Burgh for gold in the 100 breast on Monday but now Van
LoNdoN, August 4 (AgENCIEs): A change to the offside rule will be introduced to English football matches this season after a number of controversial incidents last term. In recent years, players could stand in an offside position so long as they weren't deemed to be actively involved in play. However, for the upcoming season, the rule has been changed to state that a player can be deemed to be offside if they "clearly attempt to play a ball which
is close to them when this action impacts on an opponent". Former referee Dermot Gallagher believes that the new rules will be easier to understand in practice. He told Sky Sports News HQ: "I actually think it will simplify it. When you see the season unfold on Saturday, you'll think that it's one thing on paper and another in practice." The new wording would rule out some goals that counted last season, such as Ander Herrera's strike against Preston North End in the FA Cup.

der Burgh has shown he intends to hold on to his title in the 50, which is not an Olympic event. "I had the luck of a good touch (today)," Van der Burgh said. "I knew I had great speed from the first split of the 50 last night." The session was held in an air temperature of about 15 Celsius (60 Fahrenheit) at the Kazan Arena, where a temporary pool has been placed inside a football stadium. A roof placed over the pool is open on one side, letting the outside air in. The warmup pool has no roof. American teenager Katie Ledecky kept up her impressive form by leading the 200 freestyle heats in 1:55.82, a day after she improved her world record in
the marathon-like 1,500 — also in prelims. "I was pretty slow around the turns. Hopefully I can clean that up tonight," Ledecky said. Katinka Hosszu, who also set a world record Monday, qualified second in 1:56.32. Defending champion Missy Franklin was third in 1:56.42 and world-record holder Federica Pellegrini advanced sixth in 1:57.34. Hungarian veteran Laszlo Cseh led the 200 butterfly in 1:53.71, while Olympic and defending champion Chad Le Clos only barely advanced in 14th, more than three seconds behind. Only the top 16 qualifiers made it to the semifinal. At the 2012 London Games, Le Clos won this event ahead of Michael
Phelps, who is not at te worlds after being suspended by USA Swimming for a second DUI arrest. Cseh took silver behind Phelps at the 2008 Beijing Games but has never won a medal in this event at worlds. In another non-Olympic event, Connor Jaeger of the U.S. led the 800 free in 7:44.77, just ahead of Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri. Twotime defending champion Sun Yang of China won his heat but only narrowly advanced in sixth with 7:47.87. Another contender, Ryan Cochrane of Canada, finished right behind Sun in his heat but didn't qualify in 10th — as only the top eight finishers advanced directly to the final.
