loNDoN, July 25 (IANS): Your fears are not completely unfounded. Mobile phones can actually cause cancer, says a study. A metabolic imbalance caused by radiation from your wireless devices could be the link to a number of health risks, such as various neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, the study suggested. This imbalance, also known as oxidative stress, is defined as “an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defence” by the authors. The hazardous effects of radiation from wireless devices could be realised through the “classical mechanisms” of oxidative impairments in living cells, the researchers said. The study, published in the journal Electromagnetic Biology & Medicine, explored experimental data on the metabolic effects of low-intensity radioThey are demanding remov- frequency radiation (RFR) in living cells. al of DAA and AFSPA. Study co-author Igor Yakymenko from the National University for Food Technologies said the oxidative stress due to RFR exposure could explain not only cancer, but also other minor disorders such as headache, fatigue and skin irritation, which could develop after long-term exposure. “These data are a clear sign of the real risks this kind of radiation poses for human health,” Yakymenko said. “ROS are often produced in cells due to aggressive environments, and can also be provoked by ordinary wireless radiation,” he added. In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified RFR as a possible carcinogen for humans. But clear molecular mechanisms of such effects of RFR were a bottleneck in acceptance of a reality of risk. Yakymenko and his colleagues call for a precautionary approach in using wireless technologies, such as cell phones and wireless internet.

orous discourse” among educators, policy makers, the fourth estate and civil society in order to tackle the issue. Tying well into this was Daniel M Khan’s paper on the ‘role of education in promotion and protection of human rights.’ He is Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Tetso College. He observed that while countless NGOs are working on imparting human rights education, the Government of India has not progressed too far. The UGC has introduced the study of human rights in higher education. However, the NCERT remains insistent on not introducing human rights education at the school level. Reason: it could be ‘too much’ for students to handle. Khan explained that the Government wants teachers to be educated on human rights, who are then expected to teach a huge population of students. This is “injustice,” according to Khan, as human rights values cannot easily be inculcated in a few classroom sessions. It needs a dedicated curriculum with direct training for students so that they can understand their rights as well as uphold those of others from a young age. 70% of human rights violations everywhere happen in the ‘third world,’
he informed, and keeping human rights open only to higher education means that half of India’s population (which is unable to make it to that level) never comes across the concept of human rights at all! In order to make human rights into a mass movement, noted Khan, it needs to be popularised through education. The last paper of the seminar was presented by Anil Kumar Das, Assistant Professor, Pranabananda Women’s College, Dimapur, entailing ‘a critical study on gender inequality in North Eastern States: A human rights perspective.’ He highlighted how despite many international and national efforts, a “large gender gap exists in political participation, education, employment and health,” in the region— women fall back in work participation, literacy, infant mortality and sex ratio. “Because of patriarchy, influence of male members of the family on the women, customary laws, gender division of labour as a result of which they acted as proxies of their male counterparts in the political domain,” he observed in his paper. Das, while giving statistics to analyse the problem, gave suggestions on how to bridge the gender gap in the region.

Wireless devices may cause cancer: Study
Are ‘Human Rights’ for all? Kaini Lokho, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, ICFAI University, Nagaland, today took up the challenge of addressing this issue as a keynote speaker at the UGC sponsored national seminar on ‘Human Rights in NorthEast India: Issues and Challenges’ at Tetso College. It was organised by Tetso College Department of Political Science in collaboration with The Morung Express on July 24-25. With various speakers focussing on the inalienability and inherent quality of human rights on July 24, Lokho’s paper put the ideas into perspective. She highlighted how, increasingly, “human rights have become territorial, constitutional and based on citizenship.” This “undemocratic mindset” and “parochial understanding of what constitute human rights,” have left people on the fringes of “proper society” with little freedom. Within this framework, Lokho looked at the challenges of human rights in North East India. Culturally diverse, the region has seen some of the “worst human rights abuses and violations due to claims of self-determination and nationalist movements, and for want
of recognition, the demand for identity which is intrinsically linked to their fundamental defining characteristics as a human being.” “Toxic scenarios” of state excesses, made possible by the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act has made human rights abuse “even more nuanced in the last ten years, not only between armed forces and civilians but spilled over to the diverse and multiethnic communities living together.” The ongoing militarisation of the region has led to “horrific acts of racist and xenophobic violence.” Lokho pointed out one of the “biggest concerns of human rights” in the North East today as the “anti-nonlocal” wave that is “shaping the societal contours of this region.” This, she termed as “extremely ethnocentric and xenophobic in nature.” “The rise of violence against communities which are disenfranchised, seeking refuge as a stateless people underlines this problem,” she noted. Citing instances of the rising challenges related to illegal migration into the region, Lokho pointed out that student groups have taken up the activism on the issue as the state has failed to address the issues. Keeping in mind the rights of citizens as well as displaced communities, she called for the development of a “rig-

AgArtAlA, July 25 (IANS): Guwahati and five other cities in the northeast will be developed as solar cities to reduce dependency on conventional energy, a top official has said. The six cities - Guwahati and Jorhat in Assam, Kohima and Dimapur in Nagaland, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh and Agartala in Tripura - will be developed under the Development of Solar Cities Programme of the union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE), the official of the Tripura’s urban development department said. “To reduce dependency on conventional energy, the Tripura government has already launched an ambitious plan to make Agartala a solar city by initially replacing 10 percent of the power use by solar energy,” the official told IANS. Gradually, the number of street lights and other lights at important locations would be replaced by solar lights and Agartala city would become the first solar city in the northeast region in the next few years, the official added. “Solar power is a sustainable and viable source of energy. The electricity crisis cannot be solved unless we use non-conventional energy such as solar power in a big way,” the official noted. As part of the project, solar hot water systems would be installed in all hotels, nursing homes, school hostels, government circuit houses and bungalows, hospitals and health centres, tourist lodges, temples and the governor`s residence. “Theft of batteries and solar panels is a major problem the authorities face in implementing the solar electrification programme,” said another official of Tripura’s sci-
ence, technology and environment department. The MNRE would bear 90 percent of the cost involved and 10 percent would be borne by the respective northeastern state governments. Elsewhere, 70 percent of the cost would be borne by the central government and 30 percent by the state authorities concerned . “To popularise solar energy, lakhs of specially-designed ‘solar caps’ and ‘solar torches’ would be distributed among rickshaw pullers and students in the state,” the official added. The Tripura government has also initiated a move to illuminate Agartala through LEDs, replacing sodium vapour and other lamps to save energy by over 40 percent. The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to put up LED lights in large parts of Agartala city, Power and Urban Development Minister Manik Dey told reporters. He said EESL would bear the entire Rs.20 crore cost of the project to install 35,000 LED lights. After completion of the work within the next few months, over 40 percent of electricity would be saved. The EESL, a joint venture of union power ministry PSUs, carries out and promotes the business of energy efficiency, including manufacture and supply of energy efficient services and products and implements energy efficient projects. Agartala will be the second city in eastern India after Kolkata to install LED street lights. So far, only Hyderabad and Vijayawada have LED lighting systems. With a population of around 500,000, the AMC is northeast India’s oldest municipal body. The Agartala Municipal Council was turned into municipal corporation last year. Agartala is the second largest city in northeast India after Guwahati.

The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) is disheartened to learn that constables, ministerial staff, and grade II personnel were appointed through “backdoor” in DEF Kiphire under the establishment of Superintendent of Police, Kiphire. Justin Khatomong T, Executive Chairman, USSC in a press release lamented that in a time when Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) is fighting for the 25% job reservation since 1977, such “backdoor appointment” in the Eastern districts shows “a complete fact how the Eastern Nagas are treated upon despite Job reservation policy.” “When many eastern Nagas are being rejected in
terms of height, medical, written skill and oral, these backdoor appointees from across Nagaland have not gone through the set rules and phases of recruitment culture,” the release stated. The USSC further alleged that the department concerned also failed to maintain the sanctity of recruitment process and trust of the public in the system. “Thus, such estranged attitude is clear evidence of manipulation, deprivation and the Job Reservation Policy. Besides, such policy of appointment shall only hurl repercussion and grudge towards to the department by unemployed educated youths without any hesitation,” it added. A senior official in the Ministry of Road, Transport & Highways (MoRTH) said, “The protocol has been cleared. There is a slight glitch with

customs, a meeting to sort out the same will be held in September. Myanmar needs four months for parliamentary approval. The agreement will be signed by November.” Modi is learnt to be very keen that effective and credible infrastructure links be established to enhance regional cooperation between South Asia and Southeast Asia. Senior ministry officials say the trilateral highway will drastically enhance the connectivity between the Mekong sub-region and India and prove to be a game-changer for India’s northeast region. It is an important component in the govern-

ment’s plans to ramp up its “Look East” policy to the newly coined “Act East” policy. “The India-Myanmar-Thailand road link has been designed to
bridge emerging economies in the Asean and Saarc regions. The pact is scheduled to become operational shortly and to mark the occasion a car rally would be held before
March 2016”, added the official. On implementation, the sub-region will get access to the larger Asean market through seamless passenger and cargo movement.
Elected members of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) of Manipur’s five hill districts are now furious over the Government’s alleged imposition of ironclad rule on formation of councils. Speaking to journalists at the Press Club here on Saturday, an elected representative from Ukhrul ADC urged the Manipur Government to fix a date for election of chairman of the councils and presiding officer at an earliest to facilitate the council formation. Yaronsho Ngalung, who won the election on Naga People’s Front (NPF) ticket, accused the Government of adopting delaying tactics in the council formation and said this process must be done with no strings attached. Raising the same issue, NPF had on July 24 announced a 24-hour total bandh in the hill districts on July 27 after the Manipur Government failed to fulfill the party’s demand for formation of councils by July 24.
Manipur unit of NPF president Awangbou Newmai threatened a series of democratic agitations against the Government for ignoring the ADCs. NPF secured the second position in the ADC elections 2015 with 43 seats while the INC emerged as the single largest party winning 46 seats. Each ADC comprises 24 elected members and two additional members who are nominated by the Governor. Ngalung claimed there is a tussle going on between Manipur Governor Shahid Ahmed and Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh over the nomination of members. Some of the elected members had been administered oath on July 13 last and the rest on July 24, he said, but regretted that still the Government is hindering the process of council formation. He warned of democratic agitation by all elected members if the council formation is deliberately delayed further by the Government. ADCs in the hill districts are for devolution of powers from the power-centric Imphal valley. Elections to the six ADCs were held on June 1 last.
CJRR demands justice for Rahul JE outbreak: Health Ministry rushes expert team to Assam New Delhi, July 25 (MexN): Committee for Justice and Release of Rahul Moirangthem held a press conference over, what it claimed, “false allegation” charged by the Delhi Police against Rahul Moirangthem on July 24 at Press Club of India, Raisina Road, New Delhi. Rahul Moirangthem was arrested by the Delhi Police in a case relating to the vandalization of Holy Child Auxilium School, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, which was alleged to have taken place on February 13, 2015. In a press release, the committee appealed for justice and urged that strong action be taken against police officials involved in implicating “innocent Rahul”. “Rahul is not aware of the existence of Holy Child Auxilium School and has never been there. So the allegation that his finger print matches with a finger print found in Holy Child Auxilium School Principal’s office is baseless and it is an attempt to implicate him,” the committee maintained. Stating that Rahul is a Christian by faith, the committee maintained that his alleged involvement in the said crime against Christian institution is “unthinkable and unfounded”. The committee alleged that Rahul was forcibly made to sign on 4 blank sheets by Delhi Police on May 29, 2015 and his finger prints were also taken on four different papers. This is a serious matter and we fear that his finger print will be misused by Delhi Police. Why his finger prints taken need satisfactory answer. It also alleged that the Delhi Police took Rahul to Holy Child Auxilium two times where he was videotaped both times. “It is very likely that police will use that video

to implicate guiltless Rahul,” the committee stated. Further stating that the Delhi Police gave out wrong information to the National Media and “assassinated Rahul’s character”, the committee strongly condemned the way the media “publicly criminalized” Rahul. “It was highly insensitive and condemnable that in this case that media never tried to contact the family members to know the truth,” the committee maintained. Appealing for justice, the committee called for the immediate release of Rahul and demanded strong action against police officials involved in implicating “innocent Rahul”. It also appealed to the media to write the “real stories” of Rahul Moirangthem. Further, the committee demanded that the fingerprints be retested at authentic international agencies.

Manipur: Protests demanding ILP continue iMphal, July 25 (aNi): Protests in Imphal city of Manipur continued unabated as women and members of various transport associations poured out into the streets reiterating the demand for immediate implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP). Protesters staged sit-ins, took out protest marches and raised slogans as they stood forming human chains. ILP is a travel document that restricts the entry and stay of people from outside the state without permission.
The protest was organised by Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) which has been spearheading the demand for the implementation of ILP which seeks to check the demographic imbalance within the state wherein non-locals outnumber native people of the state. General Secretary of All Manipur School Students’ Transporter Association (AMSSTA), Jimmy Tongbram said the organisation chose to support JCILPS as ILP implementation was a pressing issue.
CAG slams Arunachal for poor implementation of NBA itaNaGar, July 25 (pti): The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has slammed the Arunachal Pradesh government for poor implementation of central schemes under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA). The CAG in its recent report which was tabled in the state assembly this month, highlighted various anomalies in implementation of the NBA during the period of 2009 to 2012 in the state. The report pointed out inconsistencies in the number of BPL and APL households which it suggested for rectification. The performance review of the scheme during

the period revealed that a good number of individual household latrines (IHHLs) constructed became defunct by 2012-13 and components like construction of rural sanitary marts (RSMs), production centers (PCs) and solid & liquid waste management (SLWM) were not taken up except in Lohit district, where the constructed RSM was not satisfactory, the report highlighted. "Instances of financial mismanagement like diversion of funds, delay in transfer of funds to implementing agencies, non-existence of revolving funds and diversion of interest funds were noticed," the report revealed.
While a number of IHHLs constructed prior to March 2012 have became defunct, the failure to achieve target in time imposed extra financial burden to the state government to the tune of Rs 29.3 crore, the report said adding, in three sample districts, sanitary materials to the tune of Rs 18.3 crore was lying unused for prolonged period. Stating that none of the Anganwadi toilets constructed during the period were infant friendly, the report also pointed out that solid and liquid waste management in the state was still at a nascent stage and no concrete work had been done in this sphere.

‘Economic cooperation with neighbours imperative for prosperous eastern India’ KolKata, July 25 (IaNS): Observing that India cannot grow without the development of its eastern parts, economist and NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy on Saturday said economic integration with neighbouring countries was imperative for the prosperity of the region. Speaking at an Indian Chamber of Commerce organised event here, Debroy said the region's potential lies in agriculture and not manufacturing alone. "India cannot grow at the desired level until the eastern parts of India also grow. By eastern part
I mean, eastern part of UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and the entire north eastern region. "The eastern part of the country can only prosper when economic integration happens with neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, (others in) southeast Asia and even parts of China," he said. Asserting that 'Make in India' doesn't means manufacturing alone, Debroy said decentralisation of governance and development of physical infrastructure was essential for the region to grow.
"There is enormous amount of slack as well potential here. But that doesn't mean, to grow it has to manufacture in the strict corporate sense of manufacturing. Make in India doesn't necessarily mean manufacturing alone. "The great growth potential of this part lies in agriculture and agr0based stuff, because that is where the slack is the largest," he said. Claiming there was excessive government interference, Debroy said decentralization was essential for effective distribution of public goods and
services. "If the public good and services are delivered efficiently then there is no need for subsidies. To ensure efficient delivery of public goods and services, it is extremely important to emphasize on the need for decentralization and devolution not only within the central and state governments but also down to the local governments. "Since the past 60 years, there is an excessive degree of govern interference and one of the tasks of reforms is to reduce this malign role of the government," added Debroy.
Hyundai India to raise car prices Govt to sell 5 MuMBaI, July 25 (ReuteRS): South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co will raise prices on all but one of its car models in India by up to 30,000 rupees ($469) from Aug. 1 as input costs rise, the company said in a statement on Saturday. The newly launched sport-utility vehicle Cre-
ta was excluded from the price rise, it said. "The price increase has been necessitated by increase of input costs. We have been absorbing most of the costs but now we are constrained to consider the price increase in these challenging market environment," said Rakesh
Srivastava, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. Hyundai is India's second-largest carmaker by sales and largest exporter. India's car market, the world's sixth largest, is expected to grow to number three by 2020 as incomes rise.

New DelhI, July 25 (PtI): As a controversy brewed over a list of reasons given by his colleague Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh for suicide by farmers, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday dug out written replies in Parliament during the previous UPA regime, listing out 'love affair' as one of the several reasons for suicides. "Replies given in Parliament on the issue of farmer's suicide during UPA Government," Jaitley tweeted attaching four answers given during March 2012 and February 2014 in both Houses of Parliament.
On Friday, a written reply in Parliament to a question on the sensitive issue of farmer suicides in the country earned Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh severe criticism as he listed dowry, love affairs and impotency as some causes of suicide. Jaitely highlighted 'love affair' in the list of reasons given by the then Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Charan Das Mahant to Rajya Sabha on March 30, 2012. The other reply is attached was that of then Agriculture Minister Sharad

MuMBaI, July 25 (ReuteRS): India will sell a 5 percent stake in state-run Power Finance Corp Ltd on Monday in a stock market transaction that could raise up to $267 million for the central government, as per the current market value. New Delhi will sell about 66 million shares of the company and the base price for the auction will be set on Saturday, said a government notice to the exchanges on Friday. Power Finance shares ended 0.2 percent lower on Friday at 259.55 rupees. The Power Finance share offering is part of the government's budget target to raise as much as $11 billion from divestment of its stake in state-run companies. The government has missed its divestment target for the last five years in a row. The proceeds from the asset sale programme are critical for Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's plan to narrow the fiscal deficit to 3.9 percent of gross domestic product in the 2015/16 fiscal year that began in April.

The youth of Industrial Estate colony banded together to repair a section of the crucial NH 36, which has remained in neglect for the past many years. from funds donated by well-wishers of the locality for the work. A massive cleanup exercise was also conducted in tandem, the youths clearing garbage ly-
ing on the roadside. The condition of the particular stretch of NH 36, which passes through the locality, has deteriorated over the past few years due
to neglect. The highway connects Dimapur with Nagaon via Manja. Unbecoming of a National Highway, potholes dotted many sections of the stretch before it was filled by gravel today. The IECYF said that though it was not a lasting solution, concrete would be poured over the gravel to atleast allow for a smooth ride and avoid water-logging. The gravel dumped to cover the potholes was allowed to set during the day and it would be plastered by concrete during the night, when traffic lessens, the IECYF said.

bond agreement” should be immediately “revoked and nullified” since the agreement was done through “forcing” innocent victim under duress. It also demanded the GPRN/NSCN authority to take appropriate action against the captain for his “inhuman act” and bringing bad image to GPRN/NSCN government. DuCCF: The Dimapur Urban Council Chairman Federation (DUCCF) has also condemned the act of GPRN/NSCN cadres, who “brutally assaulted” Kahoto Zhimo on the issue of taxation but tried “to cover up their barbaric act” by alleging that he was an Army informer. “There are ways and means to settle an issue without violating human rights. If at all the GPRN/ NSCN claims to be a government it is beyond comprehension that they should use the threat of capital punishment since no government terrorizes its citizens,” the DUCCF Media Cell said in a press condemnation. Extendeding full supports the demands put forth by the 4 frontal business bodies of Dimapur, it assured the business organizations that the DUCCF will stand behind the business community in their fight for justice. And during the last 10 years, the bicycle has enjoyed something of a renaissance, thanks to ever-greater availability of lightweight materials, advanced safety and comfort features, and electric-motor-assist systems.Bicycles are becoming more beautiful, too. Small manufacturers, custom shops and independent designers are reinventing the humble twowheeler with cutting-edge shapes and technologies. Herewith, we pick 10 of our favourites.

BSG Wood.b Duomatic Country of origin: France
It was just a matter of time. Given single-speed cyclists' pathological fixation with minimalism, Estonia's Velonia – a boutique studio founded and manned by Indrek Narusk – has lopped off the seat tube right where it stood. The resulting bicycle, the Viks, is a noodly abstraction fashioned from just two steel tubes, joined at the head tube below the handlebar. Shown above in "Lamborghini Orange" powdercoat, a Viks can be configured for either fixed or freewheel riding, although Narusk cautions that handlebar-mounted brakes are a tricky fit, given the bar's unusual 30mm diameter. Best to go brakeless, in other words. (Photo: Viks) French bikemaker BSG’s Wood.b line of cycles combine metal pieces GreenChamp Original with structural components made of exposed ash plywood. The finished Country of origin: Singapore product – which is every bit as pricey as it looks – seems closer to art than machinery. Don't be fooled: BSG’s frame promises exceptional durability, and the use of painted aluminium components keeps weight to a manageable 35lbs. This beauty is a beast. (Photo: BSG Bikes)
Never mind the price tag, which is greater than a new Alfa Romeo MiTo: There is nothing sensible about the Cykno electric-assist two-wheeler. This Italian beauty features a monocoque frame, front forks and 26-inch radialspoke wheels made of carbon fibre composite, which, despite an array of electric-drive hardware, keeps weight to a not-unwieldy 57lbs. The Cykno's leather-wrapped centre section contains a 250- or 500-watt electric motor, a lithium-polymer battery pack and an on-board charger with cable. Full charge from a standard household outlet takes four hours, and the Cykno will cruise in pedal-assist mode for a generous 37 miles – perfect for a long day of Roman roamin'. Pashley Parabike Country of origin: UK
Youth, said George Bernard Shaw, is wasted on the young. So is this simply beautiful bamboo balance bike, made by Kickstarter-funded GreenChamp. For the uninitiated, a balance bike is a pedal-less two-wheeler intended to teach riding skills more effectively than that traditional staple of childhood, the tricycle. Beyond such worthy considerations as sustainability and carbon footprint, the GreenChamp Original is a triumph of design. Bamboo fibres are infused with honey (yes, honey) to prevent crackBikemaker Pashley, which has been in business since the days of King ing, and the tubes feature dual-wall construction for maximal rigidity. To George V, is known for its classically styled, eminently English cycles – bikes be young again... (Photo: GreenChamp Bikes) with Brooks sprung saddles and ding-dong bells and big wicker baskets. Pashley's new Parabike mines British history, as well, albeit a less genteel Cherubim HummingBird chapter of it. The cycle recalls a WWII-era two-wheeler called the Airborne Country of origin: Japan bicycle, which was carried into occupied France by British paratroopers. Pashley's version, while not designed with skydiving in mind (the original featured a folding frame that strapped to the 'trooper's body), is a classic in its own right, with a bowed multi-tube frame that is at once nostalgic and forward-thinking. (Photo: Pashley Cycles)
To many eyes, the bike you see here is, well, just a bike. But to millions of people across Africa who rely on pedal power to move themselves, their families and their goods, the Buffalo is very beautiful, indeed. The brainchild of the US-based charity World Bicycle Relief, the Buffalo is assembled by trained local workers at facilities in several African nations. From there, the bikes are donated to non-governmental organisations or sold to consumers across the continent. Its prim look, intended to recall classic British touring bikes, belies genuine brawn. Like its bovine namesake, the Buffalo bike is built for the rigors of African use – heavy loads, rough terrain and infrequent maintenance (each one includes a small tool kit and a tire pump). Vanmoof S Series Country of origin: Netherlands
Amsterdam's Vanmoof has been colonising the gallery districts of major world capitals since 2009, winning aesthetes over with its bikes' Tinker Toylike forms, tough materials and emphatically Dutch brand of sprezzatura. The S Series commuter bike builds on the no-frills original cycle without cluttering up the works. An eight-speed Shimano internal hub helps a rider handle hills, while disc brakes provide the stopping power of far more sophisticated – and far pricier – road bikes. (Photo: Vanmoof) Donky Bike Country of origin: UK The Donky Bike is a nontraditional beauty, to be sure, a bike that prioritises strength, simplicity and urban maneuverability over sensual lines or luxurious trappings. The cycle – which was nominated for a Design of the Year award by London's Design Museum – is BMX-inspired, with tough 20in wheels and a stocky frame bisected by a load-bearing steel beam, upon which are mounted front and rear cargo racks. It's a devoted hauler, but unlike traditional cargo bikes, which can stretch 8 feet or more end to

Christian Life and Obedience Scripture Passage: “Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins” (James 4:17 NIV) The church of the ducks: The 19th century philosopher Soren Kierkegaard's told a story about a make believes country where only ducks live. One Sunday morning all the ducks came into their little duck church, waddled down the aisle, and waddled into the pews. Then the duck minister came in, took his place behind the pulpit, and opened the duck bible and read, "Ducks! You have wings, and with wings you can fly like eagles." The ducks all quacked loudly “AMEN!” The duck pastor continued to read and said, "With your wings you can soar into the sky!" Again the ducks responded with Amen and Hallelujah. So the duck pastor read some more with even greater emphasis: "Ducks, you have wings! You can fly!" And all the ducks in the church quacked, "Amen!" And then the service ended and they all waddled home. None of them flapped a wing! Heads nodding in agreement: James has been writing to an audience just like the duck church. He recognizes that his letter has been read in various congregations and many will have been saying “amen!” and nodding their heads in agreement just like the duck church with what James has written. But for James, head nodding in agreement is not the same as obedience. It is not enough to know what you’ve heard or read in the word of God about what God wills for you. What matters is that if you know what to do, that you do it! Having the knowledge about God’s will and the necessity of obedience is not the same as being obedient. Believing God’s word and specifically, God’s will is that we obey it because it is true, good, precious, and real. We should really love God obediently, with no self-deception, no joyless legalism, no religious will power, but rather happy, free, heartfelt, vital, authentic obedient love for the living God. The importance of obedience: First, obedience is for our good. James calls it the “good” which means beautiful, excellent, noble, or right. The commandments of Jesus are not some impulsive, arbitrary whims of a despotic ruler. They are meant to make us well and happy. Every command is meant for our good. The scriptures say, “You are good,
7:19; “Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God's commands is what counts." Third, the scriptures teach us that we are saved for obedience. For example, “By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name…” (Romans 1:1-5) We are not saved by obedience. Salvation comes by grace through faith in Christ. But, we are saved for obedience. Fourth, obedience is the secret of happiness. Jesus said, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” (John 13:17). Jesus spells out the formula for happiness. Knowing the right things to do + doing them = happiness. Fifth, obedience demonstrates our love for Christ. Four times Jesus says in John chapter 14 that the test of authentic love for him is keeping his commandments. Repetition is one way of stressing importance so this is a very important point to Jesus. The test of authentic love for Jesus is whether you keep his commandments. Sixth, God does not love us because of our obedience, but for our obedience. God does not love us because we first loved him by obedience. John 3:16, " For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." This means God's love for the world caused him to give his Son before anyone loved or obeyed the Son. God loved first. 1 John 4:19, “We love because he first loved us.” Jesus said to his disciples in John Selie Visa 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.” loved you, so you must love one another. (Psalm 119:68) “And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your His commandments are not burdensome: The Apostle John says, “This is how we know that God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your we love the children of God: by loving God and carrysoul, and to observe the LORD's commands and de- ing out his commands. This is love for God: to obey his crees that I am giving you today for your own good?” commands. And his commands are not burdensome…” (Deuteronomy 10:12-13) Obedience is always worth (1 John 5:2-3). He adds something else about obedience it. Obedience is good for us and God’s demand for our that is both puzzling and wonderful. “And his commandments are not burdensome.” In order to obey the comgood shows what a good and loving God he is. Second, the scriptures clearly teach us that God de- mands of God there has to be something more than willmands obedience from his people. We are responsible power, duty, and decisions. The reality is that we cannot before God to obey his commands. Obedience to the obey the commandments of God on any of those bases commandments of God is utterly crucial in living the and therefore the commandments very burdensome. But Christian life. Matthew 5:19, “Anyone who breaks one of John says that obedience is not burdensome. So there the least of these commandments and teaches others to is a kind of obedience that is not burdensome; a kind of do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, obedience that is possible where God can demand somebut whoever practices and teaches these commands will thing impossible from us, yet by his grace and power be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” I Corinthians makes it possible to do what he demands.

Counseling and Pastoral Heartache Jeremy Pierre Creating Opportunity for Heartache “Life is hard enough with my own problems. Why am I taking on other people’s?” I have to admit, this thought passes through my mind more regularly than it ought. It usually finds me at some low point in ministry, then kicks me. The situations that bruise a pastor most are those that come when you’ve spent countless hours delicately untangling complex issues and setting people on a trajectory of growth, only to have everything collapse in an instant. The people give in or walk away, but not before delivering a parting kick to your shins. Walking with people in the complications of their lives will increase your heartache. There’s no use pretending otherwise. If you arrange your schedule to take on some counseling, you are creating opportunity for greater heartache. Why bother? The Evidence of Being an Undershepherd For pastors, heartache is a sign they’re alive. Paul identified himself as a faithful minister of the gospel, not merely by defending the purity of his doctrine, but by proclaiming his own experience of heartache for the spiritual good of his people. He defied the Corinthian believers to find a single person whose pain he did not associate with and whose spiritual good he did not care about: “Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?” (2 Corinthians 11:29, see also 1 Thessalonians 2:8-12). Heartache was evidence that Paul was Christ’s apostle. And it’s evidence that we are Christ’s undershepherds. So, just to be clear: I’m not saying that counseling increases heartache. Caring for the spiritual good of others does. Counseling is only a tool for caring. It allows a pastor to navigate the dark wilderness of people’s lives, guiding them to greener places. The pastor knows he could stay comfortably on his own homestead—there’s certainly enough to maintain there. But his burden compels him into the wilderness. And even when straying people are clumsy and slow, when they are stubborn and refuse to follow, when they kick, the pastor still seeks them out with good questions and appropriate words. He is patient when wronged and humble to admit his own shortcomings in the process. All of this is heartache. And it’s how a pastor knows he’s alive—alive with a life that is not his own. When I experience those rare moments of a heartache that does not flow from self interest but rather genuine concern for others, I know that Jesus is changing me. My heartache in ministry used to be tied almost exclusively to my own sense of performance or personal investment. Now, it’s less so. For a guy like me, that’s quite literally a miracle. Why do pastors take on other people’s problems? To honor the One who took a world of trouble that was not rightfully his. Jeremy Pierre (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as chair of the department of biblical counseling and biblical spirituality as well the dean of students at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also a pastor at Clifton Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the coauthor (with Deepak Reju) of The Pastor and Counseling.

You Are Loved The couple looked familiar to me as I saw them approaching, smiling, pushing a stroller toward me, but I couldn’t place their names. It was the annual summer meeting of my denomination, so I was used to renewing old acquaintances from all over the country. The husband was the first to speak, and he told me that he and his wife had met with me about adoption a few years earlier when they were students at the seminary I served. They wanted me to see the little boy they had adopted, from a former Soviet state. I knelt down to talk with the little fellow as he shyly curled back in his seat. The little boy had beautiful olive skin coloring, looked as though he had Arabic or perhaps Persian roots, and had cute little chubby cheeks. As I played peekaboo with the little boy, I asked the parents if they’d had any trouble with bureaucracy along the way. “The only problem we had was with the judge,” the wife said. “The judge thought there was some mistake that we’d want this child because he’s dark skinned. The judge said no one would want a child like that and that there were plenty of light-skinned babies available. He just couldn’t believe that we would want him and almost treated us as though we were up to something shady because we did.” I wasn’t expecting that, and as I stroked this little boy’s cheek, those words struck me: “No one would ever want a child like that.” I picked him up from his stroller and hugged him, hoping I wouldn’t start crying in front of my denominational peers walking up and down the corridor of the convention hall. “You’re loved and wanted,” I told him. “Isn’t that great?” After I finished the conversation with the family and went back to the relative inanity of voting on resolutions and motions on the convention floor, I couldn’t get the horror of that situation off my mind. How could a judge sit in his chair and deem that lovable child to be unworthy of love simply because of the shade of his skin? What kind
of backward Philistines were they dealing with in that courtroom? And then I remembered that my denomination, in whose deliberations I then sat, was formed in a dispute with other American Christians over the slavery of other human beings because of the color of their skin. And my people had been on the slaveholders’ side. Previous generations of preachers just like me (indeed probably some related to me) had argued that some children were unworthy of freedom because of the shade of their skin. My own ancestors had seen to it that children of a darker skin than themselves were made orphans. As the resolutions flew around the convention hall about “the sanctity of marriage,” I realized that previous generations of preachers in this very same context had propped up a system in which parents couldn’t marry legally because that would make it more difficult to sell them individually when necessary. A similar story could be told a billion times over in virtually every human society throughout history. There seems to be an orphan-making urge among us, whether we see it in the slave culture of centuries past or the divorce culture of today. But where does it come from? Satan’s Rage Against Christ and Children It’s not just impersonal economic and sociological factors at work. “The course of this world” is driven along by “the prince of the power of the air” (Eph. 2:2). Jesus showed his disciple John what the story behind the story is. It’s the picture of a woman giving birth to “a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron” (Rev. 12:5). Crouching before this woman’s birth canal is a dragon, the Serpent of old, who seeks to “devour” the baby (Rev. 12:4). That dragon then “became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring” (Rev. 12:17) and has done so ever since. The demonic powers hate babies because they hate Jesus. When they destroy “the least of these” (Matt. 25:40, 45), the most vulnerable among us, they’re destroying a picture of Jesus himself, of the child delivered by the woman who crushes their head (Gen. 3:15). They know the human race is saved—and they’re vanquished— by a woman giving birth (Gal. 4:4; 1 Tim. 2:15). They are grinding apart Jesus’s brothers and sisters (Matt. 25:40). They are also destroying the very picture of newness of life and of dependent trust that characterizes life in the kingdom of Christ (Matt. 18:4). Children also mean blessing—a perfect target for those who seek only to kill and
destroy (John 10:10). But Satan always uses human passions to bring about his purposes. When new life stands in the way of power—whether that power is a Pharaoh’s military stability or a community leader’s reputation in light of his teenage daughter’s pregnancy—the blood of children often flows. Herod loved his power, so he raged against babies. In the middle of all of this stood Joseph, an unlikely demon wrestler. Far More than Charity The protection of children isn’t charity. It isn’t part of a political program fitting somewhere between tax cuts and gun rights or between carbon emission caps and a national service corps. It’s spiritual warfare. Our God forbids Israel from offering their children to Molech, a demon-god who demands the violent sacrifice of human babies (Lev. 20:1–5). Indeed, he denounces Molech by name. He further warns that he will cut off from the people of God not only the one who practiced such sacrifice but also all who “at all close their eyes to that man when he gives one of his children to Molech” (Lev. 20:4). Behind Molech, God recognizes, there is one who is “a murderer from the beginning” (John 8:44). The spirit of Molech is at work among us even now. Even as you read this page, there are bones of babies being ground to unrecognizable bits, perhaps even a few short miles from where you’re sitting. There are babies lying in garbage receptacles waiting to be taken away as “medical waste.” These infants won’t have names until Jesus calls them out for the first time. There are little girls waiting in Asia for a knock at the door, for an American businessman who’s paid a pimp to be able to sexually assault them. There are children staring out the window of a social worker’s office, rubbing their bruises as they hear their mother tell the police why she’ll never do it again. Aborted babies can’t say, “Abba.” But the Father hears their cries anyway. Do we? The universe is at war, and some babies and children are on the line. The old Serpent is coiled right now, his tongue flicking, watching for infants and children he can consume. One night two thousand years ago, all that stood in his way was one reluctant day laborer who decided to be a father. Russell D. You can’t serve God and Entertainment
Y
Phillip Holmes
ou love entertainment. On-demand streaming, live television, video-sharing websites and social media are all at your fingertips. Your ability to access entertainment swiftly and effortlessly has encroached on every aspect of your life. Research recently revealed that you’re tempted to check Facebook every 31 seconds. Are your friends boring you with dull conversation? Grab your iPhone. Is your wife annoying you? Turn on your television. Is your professor uninteresting? Sign into Facebook. Entertainment is your means of escape from the inconveniences of life into a comfortable world of fantasy. And your means of escape has made you a slave. Confessions of a Slave If I’m honest, I’ve had an unbridled love for frivolous entertainment—over the years I’ve used it primarily as a means of escape. Entertainment was used to distract me from the guilt of sin, friction in relationships or anxiety about work. It became what daily prayer and Bible reading should have been— a safe haven to retreat for rest and comfort. I failed to recognize that my never-ending pursuit to be entertained had turned me into a slave. My love for my new master was subtly causing contempt toward God and reticence in my duty to delight in him. A Tale of Two Masters In Matthew 6:24, Jesus reveals that when we gravitate toward entertainment as a means of comfort, we’re moving further and further away from our Creator. The notion of two masters is, in fact, a fictitious tale. It’s impossible to have more than one. Jesus exposes an insightful reality: Love for one will cause hatred toward the other. If we devote inordinate amounts of time, money and affection to anything, including entertainment, we will despise whatever draws us away. We’ve all been faced with the choice between spending time in prayer and God’s word, or spending time with entertainment. At the crux of these crossroads, the all-satisfying gift of Jesus is pit against the temporal promises of entertainment. Whichever road is chosen increases hatred for the path denied. When we choose the broad path to careless entertainment, seeds of contempt are planted for Christ. Likewise, when we choose the narrow road to Jesus, seeds of hatred are planted, not only for mindless entertainment, but all of our indwelling sin. This path reveals that endless entertainment is a cruel master that seeks to devour our true joy and lead us away from Christ, our source. The Cruel Master Entertainment over-promises but under-delivers. It is unable to satisfy what our hearts truly long for. We want rest. We want comfort. But entertainment can only offer a temporary fix. As soon as we wake up from hours of binging on Netflix or scrolling through social media, our problems remain, still waiting to be confronted. And we’re faced with the truth that all we’ve done is put off the inevitable. Endless entertainment is a cruel master that seeks to devour our true joy and lead us away from Christ. Chasing joy in entertainment is like “chasing the dragon.” The term is a slang phrase, which refers to the continuous pursuit of an ultimate high previously obtained at the initial use of drugs. For example, a drug user tries heroin for the first time and has an amazing experience. But when he returns to the drug, he can’t get that same experience. Instead, the experience gets weaker, so the user takes more and stronger heroin to reach that same feeling. As he “chases the dragon,a” the user’s body decays inside and out. This decay usually manifests itself in extreme itching, unwanted weight loss, slurred speech, kidney or liver disease, and more. Addiction to entertainment is similar. The physical and health effects may not be as striking as heroin, but the spiritual effects are costly. We chase mindless entertainment hoping for relief for our souls, but instead all it really can promise is death. It distracts us from the highest and ultimate good with a mirage of happiness and comfort. Jesus Is the Good Master In Matthew 11:28–30, Jesus invites all who labor and are burdened to come to him, promising to provide rest for our weary souls. This promise is not empty. In the gospel, he fulfills his promise by taking up our burden on the cross for our rest and joy in him. I have never walked away disappointed when I’ve pursued my joy in God through prayer and Bible reading, reminded myself of his promises in the gospel, repented of my sin, and cried out to God for comfort. Were all of my problems solved? No. But my joy was restored, and my soul had feasted on his promises. Likewise, every time I’ve used entertainment as a means of relief for my soul, I was left wanting and unsatisfied. Even still, when I find myself at that proverbial crossroad between communion with Christ and frivolous entertainment, I’m tempted to say yes to entertainment and no to God. As we walk through life, we will be tempted to continue to engage entertainment carelessly and ignore our bondage. Some will continue to live like slaves, binging on entertainment and neglecting spiritual nourishment. But you don’t have to live in bondage. The gospel supplies the power to say yes to God and no to endless entertainment. Here we uncover the beauty of our wonderful master and realize that Jesus is better. In communion with him, we experience lasting joy that entertainment can only promise but never provide. The next time you find yourself at this familiar crossroad, cling to Jesus. Remember that he alone is your highest good. He died and rose so that we can experience communion with him, which provides the supreme joy that an escape to entertainment simply cannot compete with. Funding crisis puts India's AIDS programme, and lives, at risk
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, JULy 25 (REUtERs): India's fight against AIDS is being jeopardised by a cut in social spending by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, with health workers being laid off and programmes to prevent the spread of the deadly disease curtailed. With about 2.1 million people infected with HIV in 2013, India has the most cases in the Asia-Pacific, according to the World Health Organisation, but new infections have fallen more than 20 percent over the past 14 years. Despite the progress, India accounted for most of the estimated 340,000 new infections in the AsiaPacific last year and any cut-back to prevention programmes risks seeing rates rise, experts say. The government antiAIDS programme had been in trouble for more than a year, with bureaucratic delays and a funding crunch resulting in shortages of condoms and drugs. Then in February, Modi slashed the 2015-16 central AIDS budget by 22 percent, asking states to fill the gap. States have been slow to respond, and to make things worse, have fallen behind in disbursing the smaller amounts they have received. With thousands of workers unpaid for months, the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) is
warning of damage to programmes. "There is not only loss of morale, but also attrition," Navreet Singh Kang, the top official at NACO, wrote in a letter obtained by Reuters that he sent to all states on May 13. "Loss of trained staff would be a serious blow for due functioning of the programme ... There is real need to maintain focus, coverage and intensity." Three AIDS prevention units in states with high rates of HIV have ordered that up to 25 percent of prevention workers be laid off and have curtailed projects and services, other government letters seen by Reuters showed. The layoffs began in two states on July 1.
"We are not throwing away the programme, but we are resizing it as per availability of funds," one NACO official said. "OUT OF OUR CONTROL" In Modi's home state of Gujarat, the Ahmedabad city AIDS prevention unit has not paid staff since January, a letter from the unit to its non-governmental partners dated June 29 showed. The number of community workers promoting safe sex will be reduced by 80 percent in Delhi from August. Nochiketa Mohanty, India manager for global advocacy group AIDS Healthcare Foundation, warned the cuts would mean fewer infections be-
Won't allow another Kargil: Army chief DRAss, JULy 25 (IANs): The Indian Army will never allow a repeat of the 1999 Kargil war with Pakistan, army chief General Dalbir Singh said on Saturday. On the eve of the 16th anniversary of Vijay Divas, he laid a wreath at the Kargil war memorial here and said: "We won't allow another Kargil." "This is a difficult area, I congratulate you for the good work," he told the soldiers. The army chief said there were some problems of equipment and clothing which have been identified and were being rectified. The Kargil war was fought in the summer of 1999 to evict Pakistani regular forces who had intruded and occupied posts vacated for the winter on the Indian side of the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army has focused on plugging the loopholes after the Kargil war, where India was taken by surprise. According to former army chief Gen. (retd) V.P. Malik, who headed the army during the Kargil war,
General Dalbir Singh
improving surveillance and increasing the number of soldiers were some of the major steps taken after Kargil. "At the time of the Kargil conflict, there was virtually no surveillance device at the border. Today's technology was just not available. One had to walk from one post to another in snow," the retired general told IANS. "Today, things are different. We have more troops on the border now which started at that time with raising the 14th Corps," he said. The 14th Corps, a part of the army's Udhampurbased Northern Com-
mand, was raised in 1999 after the Kargil War to organise troops in Ladakh. A commemorative function is held every year in the memory of the hundreds of Indian soldiers who died in the operation. The commemorative functions for the Kargil Vijay Divas started on July 20. On Sunday, senior army officers, war heroes, political and civil administrative representatives will participate in the commemorative wreath laying ceremony at the Kargil war memorial located at the base of the Tololing feature, the scene of one of the most fierce battles of the operation.
Know side effects before using ginseng supplement
KoLKAtA, JULy 25 (IANs): If you ever think of trying out ginseng supplements then also go through possible side effects instead of blindly taking them, said health experts here on Saturday. According to experts, the popular Chinese herb is linked to bladder cancer. Ginseng is usually consumed in the form of energy drinks or herbal teas and has been traditionally used to lower blood sugar, cholesterol levels, protect against stress, enhance strength and promote relaxation. Some reports also claim that it has anti-cancer properties. "The fact that Chinese medications like ginseng cause bladder cancers is clear cut. There are a few cases in India also related to this. The number of bladder cancer cases in China is almost double than anywhere else in the world,"
urologist and andrologist J.G.Lalmalani, told IANS. The Mumbai-based expert was talking on the sidelines of an international live/video operative workshop on prostate cancer here at the R.G.Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He said it is best to "study the possible side effects" of such herbal supplements and drinks before regular consumption. He also cautioned about paying attention to the symptoms of prostate cancer. "If there is pain while urinating, blood in the urine, sudden weight loss and regular use of bathroom three to four times a night, you must realise something is wrong," he said. Explaining the increase in the number of prostate cancer cases in India, Lalmalani said an ageing population and heightened detection are the factors behind
the numbers. "Prostate cancer was always present. Now there is ageing population, earlier detection, awareness that prostate cancer exists. Nowadays, people don't opt for ayurveda, homeopathy, get treated and then come late," he said. "Complementary medicine cannot deal with such major diseases... which are lethal," he said advocating the dictum of early suspicion, prompt diagnosis and a radical treatment. Wo r l d w i d e, p ro s tate cancer is the second most common cancer in men. India has seen a steady increase in cases concomitant with an increase in life expectancy. According to the National Cancer Registry program by the Indian Council of Medical Research, prostate cancer is estimated to go up by 140 percent in the next few years.
ing detected. "How will people be aware of HIV testing? They are unlikely to be tested if prevention activities are curtailed," he said. In the Philippines, HIV infection rates rebounded after a successful prevention programme was scaled back, the U.N. envoy for AIDS in Asia told India's The Caravan magazine in April. Modi's government denies it has reduced overall funding, saying states can pick up the slack. As part of a major overhaul to boost infrastructure spending and give regions more autonomy, Modi this year asked states to contribute more for public welfare in return for a larger share of federal taxes.
But state governments are not obliged to spend the extra tax revenue on social programmes. Four months after the reform was introduced, AIDS prevention units in Delhi, Maharashtra and Gujarat have said their governments have not started contributing, or said how much, and when, they will. AIDS units were already reeling after the government last year stopped giving money to them directly, instead channelling more funds through state governments, where decisions often get bogged down in red tape. In Nagaland, which has India's highest HIV rate, the crunch means AIDS workers are unable to get out to the villages in hills on the border with Myanmar to fight the disease, said state AIDS official L. Watikala. "We can't do anything, it is out of our control. People are at risk, naturally," she said. Maharashtra state AIDS official Kushalsinh Pardeshi told Reuters that NACO had promised 80 percent of last year's funding, which would cover basic services. "But outreach and awareness activities would have to be curtailed," he said. Modi's office and the health ministry, which controls NACO, did not respond to requests for comment.

Nun with headgear not allowed to write exam
tHIRUvANANtHApURAM, JULy 25 (IANs): A nun who refused to remove her headgear was on Saturday barred from writing the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) here in line with a Supreme Court ruling. "I was told I can't sit for the exam in this dress," Seba told the media. "I told the officials that I can remove my veil and will put it on after they check my identity. The refusal came after a Supreme Court directive early this week refusing to
restrain the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from enforcing a dress code for the AIPMT. The bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu said CBSE's ban on certain types of dresses was meant to prevent malpractices adopted by some candidates. Sister Seba came to a school to write the examination in her usual dress. "But they said that's not possible, and I can write the exam only if I take off my head gear. I then decided to return," Seba said.
She also said the person who told her this was symphatic to her condition. "He told me that he too is a Christian, but was sorry that he had to go by the rules," added the nun. Bovas Mathew, official spokesperson of the Syro Malankara Church to which Seba belongs, described the incident as "really unfortunate". "It's really unfortunate that the central government is not doing anything to resolve this issue," Mathew told IANS.
'India difficult place to do business'
KoLKAtA, JULy 25 (IANs): Terming India a complicated and difficult place to do business in, a top central government official on Saturday called for dismantling archaic laws and procedural bottlenecks. Speaking on 'Make in India' campaign at an event here, Amitabh Kant, secretary, department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP), also said his department would relase a report in August "naming and shaming" state governments that do not ease up the process of doing business.
"We have made India a very complicated and a difficult place to do business. Over the years we have build up processes, rules, regulations, procedures, laws and our whole mindset has been about control," he said. "We need break rules, procedures, acts, and create a new mindset to allow people to do business. It is imperative that India makes itself one of the easiest and simplest places to do business. This would require a lot of dismantling of the control that we have acquired over the past 60 years," he said.
Kant said it was essential for India to be part of the global value chain and participate in various trading blocs across the world to strengthen its manufacturing base. He also lamented the country's dismal patents record despite India becoming the hub of global research and development. "If multinational companies can set up their R&D centres here, why can't Indian companies. India's patent record is extremely dismal and poor and it is important that Indians companies and institutions and govern-
ment must focus on R&D and stress on getting patents," he said. Kant said all the state governments have been provided with 98 points on which action needs to be taken by them towards ease of doing business and the report, to be released in August, will rank them as the best and worst in these terms. "We are in the process of evaluating them and by end of August we will release the report appreciating the best performing states and naming and shaming those who have done badly," he said.
Kant also said the report will be an annual affair. About land for industry, he urged the states to come up with "innovative ways" to solve issues concerning acquisition. "The states need to find a solution and come out with innovative ways to tackle the issue. There are various options like leasing or annuity-based agreements with the land owners. Providing developed land could also be an option," said Kant, adding that government must play a role in building consensus.
New challenges for urban Indian parents
KoLKAtA, JULy 25 (IANs): Hollywood's latest animation offering "Inside Out" has struck a chord with parents globally. Parallels with modern parenting are difficult to ignore, especially issues like 'helicopter parenting' or being excessively focussed on one's child, a trend that is on the rise in urban India, say experts. As they grapple with concerns over children's academics, relationships and too much time spent on social networks, Indian parents - particularly the 160 million-strong middle-class - these days are more aware about social changes due to their own sophisticated upbringing and western education. They are tuned into what is happening around them and with their kids, thanks to technology. This educated pool of parents are tapping into a plethora of online resources like parenting blogs and websites in addition to attending workshops and camps and regularly consulting experts in nutrition and mental health for allround development of their wards. Resources like e-tutorials, online mock tests, e-readers, tablets, computers and expensive coaching classes are being harnessed to ensure
July 26 is International Parents Day
children secure the highest marks, observed experts. Take the case of C. Ghosh, a school teacher, who spends hours surfing the internet daily to prepare notes for her 12-year-old son studying in a missionary school, keeps a close watch on his home work and prepares for him a large variety of dishes popular in various Indian states. But she rues that the boy takes little interest in outdoor games. "There are parents whose life is just kids. This (helicopter parenting) has now definitely increased. The reason is kids are not going out for physical activities," Shilpa Gupta, parenting coach and consultant at New Delhi's Centre for Child and Adolescent Well Being, told IANS. "There aren't enough parks and there is so much fear among parents if the child catches dengue or if the child is kidnapped. They don't play with the child at home either. Playing is an art and it helps in development," she added. For 35-year-old Nitin Tapadia, a Kolkatabased businessman, and his software programmer wife Aarti, taking their five-year-old daughter
Maanvi out for trips to malls, video game parlours or movies has become a weekend routine. "But I do realise there is not much interactive time that we dedicate to Maanvi even though we are constantly ensuring her happiness by giving in to her wishes," admitted Nitin, who has watched "Inside Out" with his family. Like most parents today, Nitin and Aarti will probably try to make up the lost time by interacting with the child when she grows up, but creating an emotional bond in her formative years is the cornerstone to a healthy and friendly parent-child equation. This is the time when one instills values and morals. "By the time the parent tries to establish a bond with the teenage kids, it doesn't work because the child has moved on and evolved," explained Gupta. School counsellor and clinical psychologist Ruvena Sanyal, who has an eight-year-old daughter, concurred. "Helicopter parenting is a major issue. There are huge issues of bonding, not spending enough time. The demands of gadgets and mobile phones at a young age
also stems from a huge sense of insecurity and vacuum. Fill him or her emotionally instead," Sanyal told IANS. It is true that children today are fast-learners and are exposed to all kinds of new things early, but giving in to technology as a way of engagement may cause addiction, said clinical psychologist ManojKumar Sharma. " D u e t o p e r m i ssiveness on the part of parents, children start spending free time on technology or develop a preference for technology, which would manifest as excessive to addictive use," Sharma, of Bengaluru's National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), told IANS. Gupta said there are definitely more attempts by parents at being open, but in practice, most stumble to explain basic facts to a teenager. "At that age, one should be supportive and be a good listener rather than being over-cautious and instructive since the kids probably know everything already," said Gupta. Rahul, a 17-year-old class 12 student, nearly laughed it off when his mother tried to swing a normal dinner conversa-
tion to sex education. While his parents used both Whatsapp and other messenger services to be in touch with Rahul as they traveled frequently, they failed to connect emotionally. When quizzed, Rahul said being in touch became more of receiving sets of instructions virtually. "That is why I nearly laughed. Growing up we never communicated on these aspects; so it became weird when mother suddenly broached the topic," Kolkata-based Rahul told IANS. But there are exceptions where parents are striking a fine balance and are accepting that kids are into relationships, are sexually active and are ready to talk about it. "I spoke to my teenaged son about protection after he revealed his relationship with his batchmate. Since, I already had a very good rapport with him as a kid and discussed various societal issues like homosexuality and gender issues, it was not too difficult to be candid," B. Ghosh, a doctor, told IANS. So, the ABCs as per the experts are: Start young, give kids space, listen, learn and enjoy their transition to adulthood!

Obama in Kenya: 'Africa is on the move' NAiROBi, JULY 25 (AP): President Barack Obama heralded Africa as a continent "on the move" Saturday as he opened a U.S.-sponsored business summit in Kenya, the East African nation where he has deep family ties. "Africa is one of the fastest growing regions of the world," Obama said. "People are being lifted out of poverty." Obama's visit to Kenya — the first by a sitting U.S. president — has been highly anticipated in a nation that views him as a local son. The president's late father was born in Kenya and many family members still live here, including his elderly step-grandmother. "This is personal for me," Obama said. "There's a reason why my name is Barack Hussein Obama." Much of the president's visit is focused on boosting business and security ties with Kenya, a growing economy grappling with the threat of terrorism, most notably from the Somalia-based al-Shabab network. Nearly two dozen U.S. lawmakers and 200 American investors have joined Obama on his trip, which also includes a stop in Ethiopia. At the Global Entrepreneurship Summit on Saturday, Obama announced more than $1 billion in new commitments from the U.S. government, as well as American banks, foundations and philanthropists. Half of the money will go to support women and young people, who Obama says face bigger obstacles when
White House Notebook: Kenya says it's no terror hotbed NAiROBi, JULY 25 (AP): Kenyans eager to have their country in the spotlight during President Barack Obama's visit have been irked by a news report describing the East African nation as a "hotbed of terror." Kenyans quickly mobilized a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #SomeoneTellCNN to correct what many here have called an exaggeration by the television network. President Uhuru Kenyatta even joined in, telling attendees at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit that they will find Kenya to be "a hotbed of vibrant culture, spectacular natural beauty, and a wonderful people with infinite possibility." The crowd laughed and applauded at his remarks. Kenya has struggled to contain the threat from al-Shabab militants based in neighboring Somalia. AlShabab, a group linked to al-Qaeda, has conducted major attacks in Kenya, including the 2013 attack on Nairobi's Westgate mall and an April attack in Garissa town that killed nearly 150 people. CNN later added an editors' note to its story on its website that read: "The headline and lead of this article has been recast to indicate the terror threat is a regional one." A CNN spokeswoman said the network had no further People on motor bikes celebrate American President Barack Obama’s visit to Kenya by holding up a photo, center top, of the comment aside from the editors' note. Obama hosted the inaugural entrepreneurship summit at the White House in 2010. This year's conference is the first to be held in sub-Saharan Africa. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who co-hosted the summit with Obama, lamented that the continent's security and other
challenges, including the 2013 attack on an upscale Nairobi mall, had created a negative reputation. He said he hoped Obama's visit would help change the narrative about Kenya and Africa. "Africa is the world's newest and most promising frontier of limitless opportunity," Kenyatta said. "Gone are the days when the only lens to view our continent was one of despair and indignity." At the two leaders sat
down for a formal meeting at Kenya's State House later Saturday, Obama emphasized the need for timetables and concrete plans to make progress for the region. He said the U.S. wants to partner with Africa "not out of charity, but because we see opportunity." "What happens in Africa is going to affect the world," Obama said. While in Nairobi, Obama toured an innovation fair highlighting the work of vendors working
with his Power Africa initiative, which aims to double sub-Saharan access to electricity. As he perused solar panels and posed for photos, Obama acknowledged concerns that the program's progress has been slow, but said it would soon help millions and that building power plants takes time even in the U.S. Obama also placed a wreath at the site of the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. The president bowed his head
for a moment, then studied the names of the victims etched into a brick wall. Extremists simultaneously attacked the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Aug. 7, 1998. The Kenya attack killed more than 200 Kenyans and 12 Americans at the embassy. Thousands were injured. Obama arrived in Kenya late Friday and spent the night reuniting with his father's family. Security was tight in the Kenyan
capital, with some of the city's normally bustling streets closed to traffic and pedestrians during his visit. There was palpable excitement in Nairobi for Obama's long-awaited visit. U.S. and Kenyan flags lined the main road from the airport and billboards bearing Obama's picture dotted the city. Local newspapers marveled at the massive U.S. Secret Service contingent that accompanies Obama whenever he travels overseas.
Children miss school, fear abuse US saw 204 mass shootings in 2015: Report after Nepal quake - aid groups LONDON, JULY 25 (ThOmsON REUTERs FOUNDATiON): Inadequate shelter, school closures and a lack of safe water and sanitation are the three biggest concerns of Nepali children affected by two huge earthquakes, said a major survey published on Saturday, the three month anniversary of the first quake. Children interviewed by aid agencies in the aftermath of the disaster also expressed worry about the lack of privacy and space, with younger children fearing attacks by wild animals, and girls feeling vulnerable to sexual harassment. "Living under the sky increases our exposure to abuse," an adolescent girl from Sindhupalchowk, a district hit by the earth-
quakes, told an aid worker. At least 2.8 million people, around 10 percent of Nepal's population, need urgent help according to a U.N. report published earlier this month. Almost 9,000 people were killed by the quakes on April 25 and May 12. Nearly 2,000 children were interviewed by four charities, in what they described as one of the largest ever child consultations ever undertaken following a disaster. "Tens of thousands of children are living in inadequate shelters, said Lucia Withers, author of the report. "It is still a race against time to provide basic needs of shelter, sanitation and protection." Withers is humanitarian adviser for Save the Chil-
dren, which conducted the survey alongside Plan International, UNICEF and World Vision. Separate research carried out by Oxfam in Dhading district to the west of capital Kathmandhu found that women and adolescent girls feel at risk of physical and sexual abuse in temporary shelters which are often overcrowded. The situation is particularly bad for single women, often widows and divorcees, who tend to be isolated and receive little in the way of community support, Oxfam said on Saturday. "After living through two massive earthquakes, this situation is only compounding their trauma," said Cecilia Keizer, country director for Oxfam in Nepal.
WAshiNGTON, JULY 25 (iANs): As yet another mass shooting in the US put the spotlight back on the contentious issue of gun control, media reports said that there have been 204 mass shootings in as many days in 2015 so far. Thursday night's shooting by a white man at a Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theatre showing the comedy "Trainwreck", that left two women killed and nine injured was the third deadly mass shooting in six weeks. The alleged shooter John Russell "Rusty" Houser, 59, using a handgun he legally purchased from an Alabama pawn shop methodically shot 11 people by firing off one 10-round clip, according to Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craig. "This was slow and methodical," as the State's Indian-American Governor
Bobby Jindal put it. "This was not a single burst." The Mass Shooting Tracker, a crowd-sourced project of the anti-gun folks at the Guns Are Cool subreddit, according to the Washington Post, had listed 203 mass shooting events so far in 2015 before the Louisiana movie theatre shooting. This year there were 18 mass shootings in April, 39 in May, 41 in June, and 34 so far in July, the Post said. The theatre shooting was Louisiana's eighth this year. There have been 10 in Ohio, 14 in California and 16 in New York. "Will anything change?" the Post asked and itself answered "Probably not" noting the reaction to the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, where a white young man shot and killed nine black worshipers at a historic church.
Conditions on Pluto: Incredibly hazy with flowing ice CAPE CANAVERAL, JULY 25 (AP): Pluto is hazier than scientists expected and appears to be covered with flowing ice. The team responsible for the New Horizons flyby of Pluto last week released new pictures Friday of the previously unexplored world on the edge of the solar system. "If you're seeing a cardiologist, you may want to leave the room," principal scientist Alan Stern teased at the opening of the news conference at NASA headquarters. "There are some pretty mind-blowing discoveries." NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, now 7.5 million miles beyond Pluto, has detected layers of haze stretching 100 miles (160 kilometers) into the atmosphere, much higher than anticipated. All this haze is believed to account for the dwarf planet's reddish color. If you were standing on Pluto and looking up, you probably wouldn't notice the haze, said George Mason University's Michael Summers. In fact, New Horizons had to wait until after its closest approach on July 14, so the sun would silhouette Pluto and the

atmosphere could be measured by means of the scattered sunlight. As for the ice flows, they appear to be relatively recent: no more than a few tens of millions of years, according to William McKinnon of Washington University in St. Louis. That compares with the 4.5 billion-year age of Pluto and the rest of the solar system. To see evidence of such recent activity, he said, is "simply a dream come true." Temperatures on Pluto are minus 380 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 229
degrees Celsius), and so water ice would not move anywhere in such extreme cold. But McKinnon said the nitrogen and other ices believed to be on Pluto would be geologically soft and therefore able to flow like glaciers on Earth. Some of that plutonian ice seems to have emptied into impact craters, creating ponds of frozen nitrogen. One of those semi-filled craters is about the size of metropolitan Washington D.C., McKinnon said. These latest findings
support the theory that an underground ocean might exist deep beneath Pluto's icy crust, McKinnon said. These ice flows — which might still be active — are found on Pluto's vast icy plain, now called Sputnik Planum after Earth's first man-made satellite. The plain is about the size of Texas and occupies the left side of Pluto's bright heart-shaped feature, named Tombaugh Regio after the late astronomer who discovered Pluto in 1930, Clyde Tombaugh. It's evident now that the
two "lobes" of the heart are quite different; Stern speculated that nitrogen snow could possibly be blowing from the brighter left, or western, side to the right. One of Pluto's newly discovered mountain ranges now bears the name of Sir Edmund Hillary, who along with Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay conquered Mount Everest in 1953. The New Horizons team already had named another series of mountains after Norgay. The spacecraft traveled 3 billion miles over 9½ years to get the first closeup look of Pluto. The New Horizons team stressed that most of the collected data are still aboard the spacecraft and will take more than a year to obtain. Over the next several weeks, much of the incoming transmissions will consist of engineering or other technical data — and only a few images. But starting in mid-September, "the spigot opens again," promised Stern, a scientist at the Southwest Research Institute. From then until fall 2016, "The sky will be raining presents with data from the Pluto system. It's going to be quite a ride."
It "did produce a fruitful national conversation -- not on guns, but on the symbolism of the Confederate flag, which the shooter adopted as a banner of his racist beliefs," the Post noted. "The morning after the third deadly mass shooting in six weeks, the presidential candidates acted as though they hadn't seen the news," the New York Times suggested looking at their reactions. Though most denounced the shootings and called for prayers for the victims, "none of the presidential contenders offered policy solutions to address gun violence", it noted describing it as a "reflection of the fact that gun laws are politically radioactive". Even "Jindal, who is mounting a long-shot candidacy for the Republican nomination, completely
deflected questions on tougher gun laws, saying he would talk about 'policy and politics' another time", Times said. The leading Republican presidential candidates are overwhelmingly opposed to any effort to restrict access to guns, it noted. The Democratic hopefuls have proposed gun control measures, but they too have been generally more focused on issues of economics, race and gender than gun violence, according to the Times. Although President Barack Obama said this week that the failure to convince Congress to pass "commonsense gun safety laws" was one of the great regrets of his presidency, Times said "Congress is unlikely to close any of the loopholes in federal gun laws exposed by the recent shootings".

Flooding in northern Myanmar leaves 9 dead YANGON, JULY 25 (AP): Monsoon rain in northwestern Myanmar has triggered heavy flooding, leaving nine people dead and affecting 70,000 others, the U.N.'s emergency relief organization said Saturday. The report on Sagaing Region from the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that 12,000 houses have been damaged and schools forced to close. The region registered a 24-hour rainfall of 7.8 inches (20 centimeters), the highest in 24 years, according to The Myanmar Ahlin newspaper. Flooding has submerged hundreds of acres (hectares) of paddy fields and inundated roads and rail lines, disrupting transportation. Heavy rain also has damaged sections of central Myanmar's Mandalay-Myitkyina rail line, forcing a partial suspension of service. The U.N. report said flooding has affected more than 800 households in northern Kachin state, forcing the relocation of some. Flooding is common during Myanmar's monsoon season, which typically starts in late May and ends in mid-October.
Magnitude-5.1 earthquake jolts Pakistan, killing Three people mANsEhRA, JULY 25 (AP): Authorities in Pakistan say an earthquake that jolted the country early this morning has killed three people. The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-5.1 quake rocked Islamabad and elsewhere in northwest Pakistan at 2 a.m. Saturday. The tremor was so strong that people came out of their homes and started reciting verses from the Quran. Senior police officer Akhtar Hayat Khan said the roofs of three homes caved in because of the earthquake in a village on the outskirts of Abbottabad, killing three people. He said police did not receive any other reports about damage in the region. Pakistan and the Himalaya region, along an active continental plate boundary, is often hit by earthquakes. In September 2013, a magnitude-7.7 quake struck Pakistan’s Baluchistan province, killing at least 376 people.
Tunisia overwhelmingly passes anti-terror law TUNis, JULY 25 (AP): Tunisia's parliament voted overwhelmingly to pass the country's new anti-terror law after a pair of devastating attacks against tourists, but critics fear the new legislation may endanger this North African nation's hard won freedoms. Alone among the countries that underwent the 2011 uprisings of the Arab Spring, Tunisia emerged with a democracy, but amid a rise in attacks by Islamic radicals, the new government is increasingly considering stability and security over personal freedoms. "There are many holes in the law that could open the way to human rights violations," said a statement by coalition of Tunisian 10 civil society groups, including the bar association, the journalists' union and several rights groups. The law, which had languished in parliament for years, was fast-tracked after gunmen in March attacked the national museum in Tunis and killed 21 foreign tourists. Three months later, another gunman attacked a resort in Sousse killing 38
tourists, mostly Britons. Since then, the government has mobilized a 100,000 additional army and police units around the country, including 3,000 dedicated to guarding hotels and tourist sites. The new law, which replaces one from 2003, is meant to aid this battle while still respecting human rights, according to Abada Kefi of the parliament's legislation committee, who described it as "a balanced law." While 176 deputies voted for it, 10 abstained and none voted against, some lawmakers have expressed reservations. "The political wrangling will affect religious rights and freedom of expression," said Sahbi Atig, a member of the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party who feared it would affect the "achievements of the revolution." The new law raises the amount of time police can hold a suspect without charge and without contact with a lawyer from six days to 15.
Death is the maximum penalty for terrorism, including disseminating information that results in the loss of life in terror attacks. Terrorism can also be defined as damaging public and private property during a demonstration. Outrage over the attacks, which crippled Tunisia's vital tourism industry, swept aside reservations over the anti-terror legislation. A study by the International Crisis Group, released as the law was being debated, contended that reforming the security services would be more effective than harsher penalties in combatting terrorism. The report said Tunisia's police suffered from corruption, brutality and poor organization. Without a reform to improve the training and conduct of police, "Tunisia will continue to stumble from crisis to crisis as its regional environment deteriorates and political and social tensions increase, at the risk of sinking into chaos or a return to dictatorship," said the report.

60 Blind men and the Elephant
60 blind men are trying to identify the elephant for the last two days. Some say the elephant is like 80%; some say 'then 20% of the elephant will be missing'. Some say all factions should also feel the elephant while some say the elephant should be shown to the public. 'Solution should be inclusive'; 'Solution should be acceptable to the public'; 'Solution is working out to be in favour Nagaland'; 'We will accept
what is acceptable to our people.' So the 60 blind wisemen say about Nagaland Political Problem. Another blind man from Delhi says ‘if I give you the elephant and you don’t accept it will become more problem.’ Can we expect any solution from these people? May the Lord save Nagaland. K. VlaDiVoStoK, July 25 (Pti): It turned out to be a dismal day for India at the Russian Open as all shuttlers, including Ajay Jayaram, failed to cross the semi-final hurdle and bowed out of the Grand Prix badminton event here. Third seed Jayaram lost in straight games to top seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia, while the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy and the mixed doubles combo of Akshay Dewalkar and Prajakta Sawant also went down in their respective matches. Jayaram suffered a 17-21 1721 loss to Sugiarto in a 33-minute clash, while the third-seeded pair of Manu and Sumeeth saw their gallant fight go in vain as they lost 21-19 7-21 16-21 to top seeds Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov of Russia in a 43-minute match. result, especially after taking the first innings lead. "Yes, it's frustrating. It was really positive for us to take the lead against the world's top-ranked Test side," Rahim said after the match. "If there had been a complete match, the result could have been different. We can only take positives from the match. "Bowling them out cheaply and then scoring over 300 runs against them first time, taking the lead,
the batting of top and late order are positives for us." Rain had washed out the entire fourth day's play and some 50 overs were lost on the second and third days at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. South Africa, who scored 248 in the first innings, bowled out Bangladesh for 326 before making 61-0 in their second knock. Bangladesh's first innings total was their highest ever against the Proteas,
the top-ranked Test team. Stiaan van Zyl remained unbeaten on 33 and Dean Elgar was 28 not out for South Africa. Bangladesh's pace debutant Mustafizur Rahman was judged man of the match for his 4-37, including three wickets in an over in the first innings. The home side named an unchanged squad for the second and final Test, which will be played in Dhaka from July 30.
CONCACAF says referee admits errors in contentious semifinal
PennSylVania, July 25 (aP): The president of CONCACAF said Saturday the referee in the Mexico-Panama game acknowledged making mistakes during the contentious Gold Cup semifinal. The regional soccer body did not say what those errors were. Mexico won 2-1 on Wednesday in Atlanta to reach Sunday's title game against Jamaica. Referee Mark Geiger "accepted that officiating errors had been made" and they "impacted the outcome," CONCACAF President Alfredo Hawit said in a statement. Hawit added that "such human errors are part of the game." Geiger issued a disputed red card to Panama's Luis Tejada in the 25th minute. He then called a penalty kick when Roman Torres fell on the ball in the area, leading to Andres Guardado's tying goal in second-half stoppage time. Guardado won it with a 105th-minute penalty kick. tion President Pedro Chaluja said Friday "we feel that that game was fixed." Geiger last year became the first American to referee a knockout stage World Cup match. Hawit became president of North and Central America and
the Caribbean's governing body in May following Jeffrey Webb's indictment. Webb and predecessor Jack Warner were named in a U.S. federal indictment charging soccer officials with racketeering, bribery and money laundering.

he movie world establishes an imaginary conception in our mental repository that devils exists and infests our human world in the form of either a dark and fearsome leviathan or a monstrous creature with multiple horns and tails with pitchforks. Such a devilish description we have about devils. However, I won't deliberate on the biblical aspects of devil and its attributes. In every nook and corner of the world today, injustice of unimaginable forms and natures are going rampant way beyond the instinctive control of human conscience. History narrates us stories of wars, bloodshed and plunders which we seemingly take pride in cherishing such a wrongful legacy. This trend goes on unceasing while negativism inhabits and evolves into phenomenal fashions with the civilization of society. Headlines in television channels and newspapers are married to reports of scam, scandal, coupe, rape, murder, racial abuse, strike, human rights violation, fighting and what not. The lists go on uninterrupted. Yet in most cases, it is the devil who bears the brunt for all the misfortunes and wickedness of mankind just as Eve blamed the Serpent. Against the backdrop of all these turmoil, I'm ironically assured to consider that devil does take the form of human beings in the absence of humane virtues. Perhaps, we should accept the fact that each of us has our own darker side. That's when I say we can be an-

other devil in fact far more dangerous than the imaginary devil we used to think of. The government is no exception to be another 'devil' as individuals-both humane and inhumane constitutes the whole structure of government. Political theorists particularly the realists holds the view that the ethics and morality of human individuals cannot be applicable to state thus leaving them independent of any decisions in their interests. Isn't that threatening if we say government is of and by and for the people? Yes! There lies the looming paradox splashing forth before us the institutional injustice meted out to citizens of Jammu &Kashmir and the northeastern states of India for the past 50 years. Hypocrisy is at its fullest play in the name of welfare state. Where on earth do we find armed forces of a nation slaying the lives of the innocent people who commit no slightest crime? Who can ever imagine armies on duty raping village women and even pregnant ones, harassing hard working farmers imbibing pepper in their anuses, torturing pastors and priests, turning churches into concentration camps where believers were compelled to do their nature call inside their place of worship, villages being burned down not just once but 14 times in some cases and so, so many in-

This is in no way better than the Holocaust committed by the Nazis that still haunts the conscious memory of every rational being. Today there lives hundreds and thousands of weary widows and orphans having nothing other than to embrace the deep wounds inflicted in their lives by the welfare government. Histories of ruthless killing by the armies are not only dated back to 1950's or 80's, another recurrence was inscribed in our 'Black Day' diaries as late as 16th July 2015, just few days back. The lives of two young and innocent children were once again uprooted by the Assam Rifles the so called 'Friends of the Hill People'. Surprisingly, they dragged the issue even to the extent of denying their involvement in the particular shooting at Wuzu village. What a big fat liar these devils are! Adding to the climax of injustice unfolds the zero media coverage in the mainland cities. Even the government ignores to censure such a horrific holocaust which deserves the most vociferous condemnation. Without any doubt, now we know which is more wortha cow or a human. The President or the so called Supreme Commander of the Armed forces of India poured out nothing but only silence to justify the inhumane misdeed done

arvel will coming up with a new comic book series, featuring teenage Peter Parker in his high-school days. The new series titled, "Spidey", is set in present, keeping in mind the new movie version to focus on that era, according to The Hollywood Reporter. To be written by "Supernatural" writer Robbie Thompson, with art by "Wolverine" and the "XMen" artist Nick Bradshaw, the series will take place at the very start of Parker's crime-fighting career. "I think the book is actually best summed up in the tagline Marvel created for it: before he was Amazing... He was Spidey. "For me, that's been a huge appeal of working on the book getting to go back to the high school years and shine
a light on the early days of Peter Parker's journey to becoming Spider-Man and doing it in an old school fashion ? single issues, each one telling their own story," Thompson said. The new comic book series is Marvel's attempt to return to the era of highschool Spider-Man. "This is a chance to go back to that vibe and energy and see Peter struggle to fit in at school, while trying to make a name for himself as a hero," he said. "There are complex and personal stories still left to be found in those years, and I'm thrilled to be a part of the team bringing them to the page," he added. "Spidey" will be launched this year around September. As part of Marvel's all-new, all-different Marvel publishing initiative.

lONDON, July 25 (AFP): Olympic champion and world record holder Usain Bolt blasted out a world championship warning with victory in the 100m at the London Diamond League meeting on Friday. The Jamaican sprint king won in 9.87sec, the same time he set in winning his heat earlier in the evening, on a cool, damp night at the London Olympic Stadium. Friday was his first appearance in six weeks with his only previous 100m race this year seeing him struggle to a modest 10.12sec in Brazil.
Justin Gatlin of the United States still leads the way with 9.74sec in the 100m this season, setting up an intriguing world championship showdown with Bolt in Beijing next month. "Overall, it was a good run. I wanted to run faster but my start was very poor and that threw me off. It was all downhill from there," said Bolt whose season has been plagued by a pelvic injury. "I feel like I am getting there and that's the good thing." Michael Rodgers was second in the final in 9.90sec with Kemar Bai-
ley-Cole of Jamaica taking second in 9.92sec. "I need to work hard ahead of Beijing. I have to keep pushing myself," added 28-yearold Bolt who was running on the track where he won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay gold at the 2012 Olympics. "I feel pretty good. If I work on my start I will be fine. I need to be more consistent." Bolt announced his return to form in the heats an hour and 20 minutes before the final on Friday. After Britain's world indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty had been disqualified for a false start,
Bolt made a hesitant start when the race got underway at the second time of asking. But he overhauled Rodgers as he eased across the line in 9.87sec, the American finishing runner-up in 9.92sec. It was the Jamaican's fastest time since September 6, 2013, when he clocked 9.80sec at the Brussels Diamond League meeting. It was also a major improvement on his one previous 100m race of the year, a 10.12sec clocking in Rio de Janeiro in April, moving him from equal 62nd to joint sixth on the world ranking list for 2015.

STAMFORD, July 25 (AP): World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. has severed ties with Hulk Hogan amid a report that one of the biggest stars in professional wrestling history used racial slurs in a conversation caught on a sex tape. The company deleted most references to Hogan on its website and issued a statement Friday saying it had terminated its contract with him. WWE did not give a reason, but issued a statement saying it is "committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide."
On Friday, a joint report from RadarOnline. com and The National Enquirer said that Hogan had used racial slurs in a conversation caught on a sex video that is the subject of an invasion of privacy lawsuit. In a statement, the 61-year-old Hogan apologized for using "offensive language" in a conversation eight years ago. "It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it," Hogan said, calling his departure from a WWE a resignation. Hogan, perhaps the biggest star in WWE's five-decade history, was the main draw for the first WrestleMania in 1985 and was a fixture for years in its signature event, facing everyone from Andre The Giant and Randy Savage to The Rock and even company chairman Vince McMahon. Hogan is currently seeking $100 million from the website Gawker for posting part of the sex tape of him with Heather Cole, the ex-wife of Hogan's one-time friend and radio show host Bubba the Love Sponge Clem.

hamilton in prime position for record hungary win BuDAPeST, July 25 (AFP): Defending world champion and series leader Lewis Hamilton bidding for a record fifth Hungarian Grand Prix victory will start from pole for Sunday's race after posting the fastest time in qualifying on Saturday. It is the fifth time in succession, ninth this season, the 30-year-old Briton has out-performed his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in qualifying. Hamilton’s pole success was his fifth at the Hungaroring circuit where he is the only driver to have won from pole position in the last 10 years. Hamilton leads Rosberg by 17 points in the championship standings with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel a distant third, 42 points adrift, after nine races. It was the 47th pole position of Hamilton's career and lifted him clear of fellow-Briton Damon Hill with his 18th successive front row start, leaving only legendary Brazilian Ayrton Senna to catch on 24. Four-time world champion Vettel was third fastest ahead of Australian Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull and Finn Kimi Raikkonen, fifth in the second Ferrari. The intense heat – the air temperature was 32 degrees Celsius and the track was 54 as qualifying began – meant that tyre degradation became a factor and accentuated the difference between the super-soft compound and the harder ‘medium’ rubber. Hamilton, on the harder tyres, set the early pace with Rosberg, last year’s pole-sitter, struggling. "There’s something

wrong with the balance," he complained. "So much under-steer…" Outpaced by not only Hamilton, but also Vettel and Ricciardo, Rosberg pitted to switch to softs, forcing Hamilton to follow suit as he dropped to 10th as their rivals trimmed their times. On softs, Rosberg went top only to be outpaced by Hamilton as the session ended with 2009 champion Briton Jenson Button, a two-time winner at the Hungaroring, taking an early exit in 16th place for McLaren Honda. Ricciardo took 12th to progress to Q2, the only man to do so using the medium tyres. For last year’s winner, it was proof that he had the confidence to resist the temptation of the softs.
In Q2, Vettel had set an early best time ahead of Raikkonen and Rosberg when, after Fernando Alonso’s McLaren stopped at the exit of Turn 13, the session was red-flagged. With some help, he managed to push the car uphill and back to the pits. The stoppage marred Hamilton’s first flying lap, leaving him without a time, but he swiftly rectified that on resumption with a best of 1:22.285, half a second faster than Rosberg. The two Mercedes men, led by Rosberg, were first out for the top ten shootout, both on used softs. The champion, in dominant form, went top on his first run with 1:22.408, 0.358 seconds quicker than his team-mate.
