Washington, June 13 (ians): If you are following a diet to lower blood pressure, you may expand your protein options to include lean, unprocessed pork, new research suggests. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is recommended to reduce blood pressure and is focused on the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, whole-grains, low-fat dairy products, nuts, poultry and fish, while reducing fats, red meats, including pork, and added sugars. “If people have to rely only on fish and chicken their diet choices can be limited and our results support that lean pork may be a viable option for people who are consuming a DASH diet without compromising the effectiveness of the diet plan,” said co-author Drew Sayer, doctoral student in nutrition science at Purdue University in the US. The study that appeared in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition compared lean, unprocessed pork with chicken and fish as the predominant protein source in a DASH-style diet. “This study supports that the DASH diet can include lean and unprocessed red meats in the appropriate serving sizes,” Wayne Campbell, professor of nutrition science at Purdue University, said.

Widows of naga freedom fighters’ plea to PM Modi

Dimapur, June 13 (mexn): “Do not miss the finest moment available to us for solution,” widows of Naga freedom fighters, who had given their lives during the 6 decade old Indo-Naga struggle, appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. This fervent plea expressed by the Naga Freedom Fighter’s Widow’s Welfare Federation (NFFWWF) in a memorandum appended by Mingthingla Khamrang, chairperson and Ramyola Duidang, vice chairperson, NFFWWF and addressed to the Prime Minister also called for intervention from the country’s premier to prevent further occurrence of violence in Naga country. “Unfortunately, although the tragedy and loss of lives cannot be reverted but certainly the honourable Prime Minister..., is in a position to avert further occurrence of violence in Naga country that would greatly contribute to regional peace and make a better place for all to live with dignity and respect,” the memorandum read.

Also highlighting the genesis of the federation, the NFFWWF said it was formed by widows of those killed in Indo-Naga political conflict with primary objective of offering our self as “prayer warriors” and to visit and comfort the aggrieved families and spread awareness on human tragedy caused by conflict. It stated that the more than 6 decades old Indo-Naga political conflict have killed more than thousands of lives, and great number of wives widowed, and children orphaned and have left many parents without children who are now living a life of misery. “And we have reasons to believe that the conflict has left its stains and humanitarian situation on Indian side too,” the federation said. The widows’ federation further expressed firm belief that the Government of India under Narendra Modi would bring permanent settlement to the protracted conflict through peaceful means honourable and acceptable to both the parties.

AAsA sound cautions to nagaland & ne students Dimapur, June 13 (mexn): The All Assam Students Association (AASA), in an advisory released to the media has informed students from Nagaland and North East in general to desist from taking admission in any of the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana colleges, particularly Guntur district’s engineering colleges and Ranga Reddy district’s engineering colleges. A press release issued by AASA president Milon Choudhury, alleged that these engineering colleges were run without any facilities and proper infrastructures and also did not maintain norms of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The fact about the colleges of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is that there are no proper qualified faculties, no prober laboratories (computers, mechanical labs, all core labs), no proper infrastructure, no placements and no library with required number of books, the AASA informed. The student body also informed that since these colleges were not maintaining AICTE norms, their respective state government has decided to cancel the college’s affiliations. It said inspections were underway with regard to affiliations and this may affect the career of students taking admission in any of the engineering colleges in the two states. It also informed that the Telangana Government in 2014 canceled affiliations to a number of engineering colleges that

violated norms prescribed by AICTE. There are more than 700 engineering colleges in united Andhra Pradesh. With the state government planning to cut off affiliation to around 500 colleges from the 700, the student body said it was still not clear as to how many colleges would be getting affiliation. Revealing that many of the colleges approached the high court and Supreme Court in 2014, but failed to obtain permission, a consequence of which, during 2014-15, all 174 colleges were with 0 admissions. This current year, the remaining 121 colleges are also in trouble with the government mulling to retain affiliation to only about 70 colleges, it stated. The student body also disclosed that even local Andhra & Telangana state students were refusing to take admission in their state engineering colleges for low quality education. Keeping this in view, the AASA has advised students from North East to take admission in TS / AP colleges only after confirming the affiliation letter from University as well as the government. It also cautioned the students to be cautious of fake assurances given by the college authorities. The AASA further stated that the fate of those students who are already studying in the second, third and fourth years in these colleges is also uncertain as they will not be able to write the end-semester examinations conducted by the affiliating university.

NPCC blames BJP for CF abrogation and violence

Dimapur, June 13 (mexn): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Saturday held the BJP responsible for the abrogation of ceasefire with the NSCN (K) and the renewed violence which has led to death of many. With over 55 lives lost and many more injured in two month time, NPCC president K Therie, in a press statement, cautioned that it will be a “long drawn guerrilla warfare if the BJP fails to change their approach and mindset.” Therie blamed Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju for aggravating the situation further with his ‘callous remark’ on May 4 in the media that “NSCN (K) has nothing to do with the Naga issue. He said such ignorance of the BJP leaders about Naga political problems does not qualify them to make senseless and insensitive statements. Pointing out that BJPs approach is in total contrast to the Congress who believes in “dialogue to solve the problem and not in confrontation,” the NPCC president asserted that the endeavour of the Congress is to solve the political problem through peaceful and constitutional means.

Two significant bridges linking to the mineral link roads which connect to the biggest limestone deposits in Nagaland State and Myanmar, at Nimi area, opened on Saturday. Tizu and Chizuti RCC Bridge, which falls under the Nimi (Kiphire district)Laruri (Phek District) mineral link road was inaugurated by minister for school education & SCERT Yitachu and minister for rural development & REPA CL John. “These two bridges on mineral link road will facilitate border trade with Myanmar and business and trade activities will flourish with Southeast Asian countries,” Yitachu announced while highlighting the international trade importance of the two bridges in the border area of Phek and Kiphire district. Yitachu said the Meluri Sub Division of Phek district and Kiphire district stand on the threshold of becoming the highest revenue contributor to the state, provided that the rich mineral resources are properly utilized. He pointed out that the two districts have the potential to become the richest business activity region and sustain the Naga economy. Expressing happiness over construction of the bridges, CL John stressed on the need to make the best use of it and develop the mineral resources in

the area. He was optimistic that the mineral link roads will felicitate economic prosperity. John pointed out that at present most people prefer Kohima and Dimapur for commercial activities, however, 10 years from now on, people would move towards the eastern side for business and trade activities since it possesses rich mineral resources. The two bridges was constructed by Nagaland State Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (NSMDC), while the project was funded by the Ministry of Development of North East Region (DoNER) and the state government in the ratio of 90:10. The contractor of the bridges was Viu Angami. According to NSMDC, the need to construct link roads to mineral deposit areas was first recognized by the Government of India, Ministry of Mines vide the “Report of the Task Force for Development of Mineral Industry in the North Eastern States” (1977), which recommended that approach road/link roads to mineral deposits should form a priority work for the region. Thus, two roadsAkhego to Phokhungri passing through Wazeho,

Zipu, Washelo, Shilloi Lake in one loop and from Wazeho to Shilloi via Phor & Laluri in another loop covering a distance of 138 km and Pungro to Nimi via Salumi covering distance of 70km were constructed by the BRTF. Since these were arterial roads; other shorter road linking the mineral deposits in order of importance had to be constructed in order to access the deposits. Therefore, a network of mineral link roads connecting the important and economically viable mineral deposits from these two arterial roads were proposed and so far three such link roads has been sanctioned by the Ministry of DoNER as in May 2008. Tizu Bridge (overall span of 111.50 metres) and Chizuti Bridge (overall span of 32.20 metres) have been constructed for double lane capacity keeping future expansion in mind. Parliamentary secretary for youth resources & sports, music task force and state lotteries Khriehu Liezietsu, parliamentary secretary for art & culture Eshak Konyak, MLA Torechu, MLA from Myanmar, Phek DC Murohu Chotso and several others were present on the occasion.

‘live, Dream and experience life’ Longrangty Longchar Mokokchung | June 13

For thirty-year-old Limaonen Imchen from Aliba village, life is about a dream, focusing on it, and living it as an experience. A theologian with a Master of Divinity degree from Bangalore, Limaonen has engaged in a lot of social activities; the most notable one being with the indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest area in Brazil during 2012-2013 while at ‘Youth With A Mission’ (YWAM) ministry. He volunteered to work under some of the most challenging conditions in different parts of the world at YWAM. Back home, Limaonen and some of his friends undertook a charity mission to a village near the Indo-Myanmar border and distributed medicines, clothes and other essential commodities to the villagers. During an informal interaction with The Morung Express, Limaonen said he was the leader of a team of 13 international YWAM members selected to work with the indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest. “There are lots of similarities between us (Nagas) and the Amazon indigenous people. In the interior places, the people are still uncivilized or semi-civilized. No cameras are allowed there. But it was such a great experience.” His team, which comprised of YWAM members from different countries, was engaged in education, conducting singing classes, constructing playgrounds etc. He is presently a motivational speaker and talks at youth programmes in different colleges, schools and churches. Besides, he has already authored and published a book titled ‘From Nobody to Somebody,’ where he narrates stories of

some young people who achieved something in life through talent and sheer determination. “If we use what God has given us, then we can achieve with whatever talent we have,” said Limaonen, while encouraging young people to identify their talents. He lamented that most Nagas have an ‘inferiority complex,’ which hampers them from moving ahead in life. Further, citing an example of a Naga friend who was highly respected by his landlord while studying in Germany, Limaonen said, “It is not from where you come from but it is your personality which determines whether people respect you or

condemn you.” He recounted that he dreamt of going to Germany when he was nine years old. And the dream finally came true in 2012 when he actually landed in Germany and even travelled most of Europe. “When you dream and focus on it; of course, challenges also do come, but if you don’t give up, dreams do come true,” said Limaonen with a sense of satisfaction. However, travelling for Limaonen was not without a hurdle. The biggest problem he faced was ‘identity crisis’ at the immigration offices in the different countries. “The immigration officers would look at me again and again and ask me whether I am really an Indian,” said Limonen with a glee. “They could not accept that I was an Indian because obviously I look so different (from the mainland Indians). So during our training graduation in Germany, they called out my name as Limaonen from Nagaland.” He also narrated about the presence of wild animals like jaguars and anacondas in the Amazon rainforest where they camped, besides ants and insects, which gave them a hard time. “Mosquitoes were the least of our problems. The bite from the ants and insects would give us skin inflammations and…but whatever the hardships, I took everything as an experience and took every challenge positively thinking to myself that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something worthwhile,” he stated. The young theologian is married to Hanna Brown, an Irish citizen and also a YWAM member, who is a trained teacher for children with special needs. CBCC initiates road construction Appeal to shift SBI original DGM Office from Jorhat to Dimapur

Phek, June 13 (Mexn): In an attempt to ensure the holistic mission of the church, the Chakhesang Baptist Church Council has taken the initiative to construct a village road between Tehephu and Khutsokhuno village in Phek District. Executive Secretary, CBCC Rev. Dr. Vezopa Tetseo in a press release stated that under the patronage of the CBCC, the construction works have begun recently by employing one JCB excavator. The local church and village authorities are giving their best co-operation in executing the construction work. The length of the proposed road construction spans 5 kilometers that will connect the two villages located in Tizu Region. Tizu region, which covers some of the Chakhesang villages, falls under Meluri Constituency. CBCC Executive Secretary adds, “The region is considered the most economically backward under Phek district. Until recently, this region is yet to see

the fruits of modern development due to lack of road connectivity.” The CBCC appeals to all concerned to extend all possible help and cooperation to execute this construction works in due

time. With the support, cooperation of the village authority, NGOs, and the Government, the CBCC looks forward to complete the construction works by the year-end. It is to be noted that

some fifteen years ago, under the patronage of CBCC, the road construction in this region was successfully completed between Sohomi Village and Kizari Village covering some 20 Kilometers.

DiMaPur, June 13 (Mexn): The SBI Jorhat South Module, which is under care of Regional Business Office Dimapur, has written to the Chief Minister of Nagaland with the request for shifting of SBI original DGM office from Jorhat to Dimapur in the interest of public services. Highlighting about the office, the request note stated State Bank of India has been functioning in Nagaland for the last 54 years in order to administer the branches, deliver faster services and ensure that co-operation with the State Government is maintained at the optimum; the Local Regional Office was opened at Dimapur in 1986. This was subsequently upgraded to Zonal Office, headed by a Deputy General Manager in 1991. A Lolly Moses, deputy general secretary, SBI Jorhat South Module and Ramesh Hasnu, assistant general secretary, SBI

Jorhat South Module, in the request note to the CM said that during the reorganisation exercise, all positions of DGM Zone Office was removed temporarily and subsequently restored. However, for Nagaland, the Deputy General Manager at Jorhat South was made to look after Dimapur Module. In order to legitimize the acts of the Bank Management, a new Module called Jorhat South was created on February 1, 2013, which includes the districts of Jorhat, Nogaon, Karbi Anglong and Golaghat in Assam and entire state of Nagaland with headquarters at Jorhat as South Jorhat. Appealing for the shift, the note stated, “By functioning from Jorhat, the module head is not going to improve administration, communication, cooperation, business etc. Rather, it will create undue harassment and problems to the Government of Na-

galand and General Public as they have to visit Jorhat for all matters that cannot be tackled by a junior level officer of the rank of AGM at Dimapur.” Out of the 136 branches of Jorhat (South) Zonal Office, 64 are from Nagaland State and most of the other 34 branches under Nogaon Region will have to pass through Dimapur centre on road or train to reach Jorhat Zonal Office. Secondly, for another 37 branches of Imphal region presently placed in Shillong Zonal Office. Dimapur is the nearest centre hardly 130 km from State Capital. Creation of the second SBI Zonal Office at Jorhat namely Jorhat South is not in the better interest of the Bank or its staff. Rather it will put the Bank in bad light in the eyes of the public of the North East in general and the people of Nagaland in particular. “This act on the part of the SBI Management is to-

M Y K

tally biased as it has compared the entire state of Nagaland to just four districts of Assam. While for Nagaland, the Bank is interacting with the highest levels of Bureaucracy. In Assam, the Jorhat South Module deals only with the District Level Officials. It is not possible for the people of Nagaland and the Staffs particularly to travel to Jorhat due to frequent bandhs in Assam particularly in districts bordering Nagaland.” On the availability of infrastructural facilities, the Government of Nagaland has allotted land to the SBI to build their Offices and Staff quarters at Dimapur and Kohima, which is not in the case of Assam. On the cited reasons, the CM is requested to intervene into the matter to instruct the Chairman of SBI to shift the Office of the DGM, S31 Jorhat South from Jorhat to Dimapur in Nagaland in the interest of all concerned.

India takes first step towards regulating medical devices

MuMBAi, JuNe 13 ( R e u t e R S ) : India plans to set up a regulator to oversee the country's $4 billion medical device industry, according to a draft policy released this month, the country's first effort to regulate an industry that covers everything from thermometers to prostheses. The policy document, welcomed by many in the industry despite concerns over a lack of detail, also outlines plans to boost local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports. While India is the world's third-largest pharmaceutical market, its share of the medical devices market is way be-

hind. More than 70 percent of medical equipment sold in the country is imported, mostly from the United States. The draft policy issued by the central Department of Pharmaceuticals proposes an autonomous National Medical Device Authority tasked with promoting the local industry and ensuring adherence to safety standards. It also proposes price controls for devices including surgical instruments, implants and diagnostic equipment -- a step that raised some eyebrows among manufacturers, as the country's pharmaceutical industry

is already in a legal wrangle with the government over price caps on drugs. Many industry groups welcomed the overall policy, however, though local makers pressed the government to do more to discourage imports. "It's like we are imp or ting Audis and Mercedes for our big hospitals, when the consumer needs Maruti Suzukis and Tata Nanos as well," said Rajiv Nath of the Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AIMED), which represents most local firms. Most Indian medical device makers are small and medium-cap firms, making basic, often dis-

posable, equipment. It falls to multinationals like Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N), Philips (PHG.AS) and Becton Dickinson & Co (BDX.N) to provide high-end devices. J&J and Becton Dickinson already have manufacturing plants in the country, while Philips, General Electric (GE.N) and Siemens AG (SIEGn.DE) are ramping-up their India operations. Still, the country is years away from making any meaningful reduction in the percentage of its medical device imports, because newer technologies continue to be launched overseas. Analysts believe the

Indian medical devices market could touch $50 billion by 2025, driven by a burgeoning middle class in need of more and better hospitals and clinics, which would require more medical devices. The government has taken some steps this year to realise that potential. In January, it allowed 100 percent foreign direct investment into the sector. The government also plans to set up medical device industrial parks in the states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Stakeholders in the industry have six weeks to respond to the draft policy before final regulations are issued.

India to start direct kerosene Make in India: Beauty, wellness subsidy transfer this fiscal sector will be a job puller by 2022

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (ReuteRS): India will start to directly transfer subsidy on retail sale of kerosene to bank accounts of some consumers by March 31, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told Reuters on Friday, as the country seeks to better target federal doles to the poor. Pradhan said his ministry was in talks with state governments to launch the scheme in 25 districts. India has saved 100 billion rupees ($1.56 billion) subsidy outgo

on cooking gas through a similar scheme, which the government says has knocked off about 40 million illegal consumers from the system. "The objective is not to stop the use of kerosene but to make it available to the targeted and poor audience," Pradhan said in an interview. Pradhan also said his government was encouraging companies to buy more oil from the spot market instead of long-term contracts to take advantage of lower prices.

Interest Rate Futures: Reserve Bank issues final guidelines MuMBAi, JuNe 13 (AgeNcieS): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on Friday, released its final guidelines for 6-year and 13-year cash-settled Interest Rate Futures (IRF) on Government of India Securities with residual maturity of 4-8 years and 11-15 years, respectively. The present notification amends the Interest Rate Futures (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2013. Besides, the RBI has

also changed the residual maturity for the existing 10-year cash-settled IRF to 8-11 years from 9-11 years. This would provide market participants greater choice and flexibility to hedge their interest rate risk across different tenors. Cash settled IRF on 10-year Government of India (GoI) Security, launched on the stock exchanges in January 2014, has received an encouraging response.

formation Technology and IT-enabled services (ITeS) is expected to grow from 27 lakh to 51 lakh during this period. While technology upgradation and automation is likely to trigger job losses in industries like call centres, it would be offset by an increasing use of IT in cyber security, policing, logistics and e-commerce which would be the main driving force to create newer jobs, Chenoy added. The skill-gap report was commissioned by NSDC and authored by leading international consulting firm KPMG, the objective being to understand sectorial and geographical spread of existing skill requirements. The figures were estimated on the basis of extensive stakeholder engagement including small, medium and large enterprises in every sector as well as Sector Skill Councils (SSCs), training providers in the skills space and academia. More than 1,000 industry experts, 19 SSCs, 110 training institutions and over 1,500 trainees were engaged for the studies.

wAShiNgtoN, JuNe 13 (ANi): A new study has revealed that most admired companies have room for social media improvement. According to Penn State researchers, not all of America's most admired companies are killing it on social media, in fact, some are almost flat lining. Several firms on Fortune Magazine's list of America's most admired companies are failing to achieve basic social media standards, let alone best practices, said Marcia DiStaso, associate professor of public relations.

DiStaso added that they were surprised that not all the companies had a Twitter account, for instance, and not every company had a Facebook page, or a YouTube page, noting that there are top companies that don't have a Facebook page, but just used an entry from their Wikipedia page. While 95% of the 417 most admired companies on the list had a Facebook page, 51% were basic Wikipedia-fed pages. Chenoy said the main reasons for this decrease are increasing mechanisation of agriculture, migration of many farmhands from permanent to temporary/seasonal nature of work and increase in productivity in areas like oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton etc. Of the 24 sectors surveyed by NSDC, the five sectors that would require the maximum skilled workforce are: Building construction and real estate (3.11 crore), retail (1.71 crore), beauty and wellness (1.42 crore), transportation and logistics (1.16 crore), and furniture and furnishing (71 lakh). The top 10 sectors, out of 24, will account for 80% of skilled workforce requirements. Skilled workforce in In-

AhMeDABAD, JuNe 13 (BuSiNeSSliNe): As the nation acquires more skilled workers to realise its “Make in India” dream, the largest employing sector of agriculture is expected to lose about 2.5 crore skilled farmers by 2022, while beauty and wellness sector is expected to witness the maximum growth in the next seven years, in terms of skilled workforce. Overall, India Inc will need nearly 12 crore skilled workforce across 24 sectors and another 46 crore people will need up-skilling or re-skilling, according to a recent survey conducted by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). The employment base in these 24 sectors in 2013 was 45.94 crore, which is projected to increase to 57.86 crore in 2022. Thus there will be an incremental human resource requirement of 11.91 crore in the 2013-22 period, Dilip Chenoy, Managing Director and CEO, NSDC, told BusinessLine. According to NSDC, skilled workforce in beauty and wellness sector would grow thrice as

TGOUN steps up in the field of elderly care

The newly constructed church building of Alempang Baptist Arogo, Mokokchung.

Alempang Baptist Arogo, one of the youngest churches under ABAM, remained a fellowship under Mokokchung Town Baptist Arogo before it became a full-fledged independent church in the year 1992. The construction of the new building was supervised by a 7-member committee and two technical consultants. The cost of the construction was initially estimated at rupees 5 crores and was

completed in a period of three and half years at the cost of Rs.4,44,26,560/-. The church building measures 215 feet in length and 65 feet in width, has a balcony measuring 20 feet in length and 65 feet in width, and has utility rooms in the basement along with two halls measuring 1170 square feet and 780 square feet respectively. Alempang Baptist Arogo is due to celebrate its Silver Jubilee in the year 2017.

Dimapur, June 13 (mexn): With a view to strengthen the Department of Geriatric and Elderly Care in TGOUN and to help the elderly rural women in Nagaland as well as other North East States, registrar of The Global Open University Nagaland (TGOUN) Dr. Imotemsu Ao today highlighted the health and other issues of elderly women. In a release issued by TGOUN planning officer Martoshi, Dr. Imotemsu pointed out that women and men age differently and the problems of elderly women are exacerbated by a lifetime of gender based discrimination. He added that patriarchal hierarchy and access to property rights are also discriminatory towards women. “Burdened with household chores for a longer span of time compared to older men, the older women do not have time for leisure or recreational activities,” he said.

Elaborating on the health of women, he said they experience proportionately higher rates of chronic illness and disabilities in old age compared to men and they also suffer greater non-communicable diseases and experience lower social and mental health status, especially if they are single or widowed. Over 50% of women over the age of 80 years in Nagaland are widows, he informed. The Department of Geriatric and Elderly Care was commissioned on the United Nations International Day for the Elderly on October 1, 2006 with a view to research on social, psychological, cognitive and biological aspects of aging, the registrar said. He also shared about updating the international panel of experts in the area at the university by inviting researchers and practitioners in the fields

of biology, nursing, medicine, criminology, dentistry, social work, physical and occupational therapy, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, economics, political science, architecture, geography, pharmacy, public health, housing, and anthropology. Meanwhile, the university chancellor TN Mannen said that geriatric care management integrates health care as well as psychological care with other needed services such as housing home care services, nutritional services, assistance with activities of daily living, specialized programmes as well as financial planning including banking and philanthropic/ charitable services. He also highlighted the “outstanding contribution” of the Founder Chancellor of the University Dr. PR Trivedi, who published 10 Volume World Encyclopedia of Geriatric Care.

According to the release, the main idea behind strengthening the department is to cooperate with the Government of India to prepare competent young professionals to help individuals, families and other care givers adjust and cope with the challenges of aging. The caregivers can cope by conducting care planning assessment to identify needs, problems and eligibility for assistance; screening; arranging and monitoring in-home help; reviewing medical issues; offering referrals to specialists to avoid further problems, providing crises intervention; acting as a liaison to families at a distance; making sure things are going well and alerting families of problems; assisting with moving the elderly persons from one place to another or rehabilitation centre; providing advocacy and offering counselling.

Ten great gardening tips D

Plan Your Garden A complete plan to plant a healthy garden will save you a lot of time and energy later. Everything is important, from selecting the right place for a garden to choosing what you can grow according to the season. Seeds are usually sown in spring, while fall is favorable for planting trees, shrubs, bulbs, and some other perennials. First decide what kind of garden you want to grow: a fruit garden, a vegetable garden, or a flower garden. Know when to sow and when to reap. Select your planting area according to your plants’ need for sunshine. It is your garden and it is up to you to plant whatever you wish, but in the beginning, I would suggest that you start on a small scale. Once you understand the nature of your plants, it’s easier to expand the boundaries of your garden.

Your Soil Matters A Lot If you know your soil type, then you can easily manage it and get the best out of it. The three basic types are sand, silt, and clay. And if you can’t recognize which one is yours, then take a sample to a nearby nursery or garden center. Soil needs a boost as well, which can be done by adding some simple organic matter to it. Such organic material includes the addition of a 2- to 3 inch-wide layer of compost, decayed leaves, dry grass clippings, or old manure. It enhances the nutrient level and encourages life-giving soil microbes and worms. Know when to dig the soil. Digging loosens the soil so roots can penetrate more easily, but digging when the soil is too wet or too dry can ruin its structure. You should dig only when the soil is moist enough to form a loose ball in your fist, but dry enough to fall apart when you drop it. Mulch, One of Your Garden’s Best Friends Sun, rain, and mulch are known as the best friends of a garden. A couple of inches of mulch will help keep weeds out and water in. The different sorts of mulch that are available include pine needles, cocoa hulls, and bark chips. For

Once you have everything you need, it’s time to set up your equipment and get brewing. You can formulate your tea specifically for whatever project you’re currently doing. For instance, molasses boosts bacteria which is beneficial to grasses, but protein like fish oil boosts fungal activity which is more beneficial to large shrubbery or trees. If you’ve never made compost tea before, you’re about to have some very happy plants. Set up your pump: Attach the tubing to the aquarium pump. Make sure the tube is securely attached and no air is escaping. Fix tubing to the side of your container with clamps, or bury the end of the tubing under your compost to keep it in place. Find a location for your bucket that is warm but not directly in the sun. Direct sunlight can promote algae growth and throw off the balance of nutrients in your compost. Mix together your ingredients: Put your compost in the container; you want to have a good balance of carbonbased and nitrogen-based compost. High carbon materials are things like: wood, ashes, bark, shredded newspaper and sawdust. High nitrogen materials are: coffee grounds, grass clippings, manure and seaweed. Loosely fill your bucket with compost about three-quarters of the way, making sure the mixture isn’t packed too tightly to stir. Now you want to add water to your mix. Rainwater is preferable since it lacks the chemicals that tap water may contain. Fill the bucket with water, leaving enough room at the top so you can stir without spilling or splashing. Start your pump: Turn your pump on and wait to see if you need to adjust it. After a few minutes you should see bubbles in your mixture; it should look like it’s boiling. If your pump isn’t producing enough air, adjust the pump up or down as needed. Add some food for the microorganisms: Once your pump is running smoothly and aerating as it should, add in one ounce of organic unsulfured molasses and stir your mixture. Let the tea steep: Vigorously stir your mixture a few times a day to release more organisms and increase aeration. Let your tea brew for about three days, turn the pump off and remove the equipment. Unclamp your tubing from the side of the bucket, disconnect tubing from the pump and unplug the pump.

Strain your tea: Allow the tea to settle for a few moments so the largest pieces of matter fall to the bottom, making the mixture easier to strain. Strain your liquid into another bucket or directly into your sprayer. You’re already so loved What to do when they don’t love you anymore Y Sarah Bessey

ou don’t have to be productive and you don’t have to change the world. You’re already so loved. You don’t have to be smart. You don’t have to be simple. You don’t have to read all the right books by the right people. You’re already so loved. You don’t have to be beautiful and thin with an articulated and ironic fashion sense, not at all. But if you’re into that kind of thing, well, that’s OK, too, darling. You don’t have to be healthy in your mind or in your body. You don’t have to be in full-time vocational ministry. You can watch horrible television or you can be proud of your television-less home. You can be artistic or scientific. You can spend your life travelling to meet beautiful people, or you can live and die in the town where you were born. You don’t have to be straight or white or powerful. You can be from the wrong side of the tracks or the gated community, suburbs or urban or rural. You can work with your hands and your mind, your back and your brain. You don’t have to be educated, not at all. You don’t have to have a degree or letters after your name. You don’t have to know the right people and boast a carefully curated Instagram feed with the famous and the beautiful and the influential. You don’t have to be conservative and you don’t have to be liberal. You don’t have to identify with certain political persuasions or ideology on sexuality or science or socio-economics or foreign policy. You can be a social justice warrior or, you know, not. None of that moves the metre of your belovedness. God won’t say, OK now I love her just a bit more because, look, she is finally out of debt or thin or powerful or influential or tireless. Your family story can be beautiful or terrible or, like most of us, it’s likely a bit of both. Perhaps you’re famous or well-known or influential, that’s OK. Perhaps you are quiet and unknown, maybe you hate that, maybe you love it. You don’t have to be a mother or a father, you don’t have to be married, you don’t have to be single, you don’t have to want children or raise children. You don’t have to be sober or clean. You don’t have to give away everything you own and take a vow of poverty, you don’t have to be prosperous either. Church or no church or a certain kind of church only, whatever. You have nothing to prove. You have nothing to earn. Sure, any one of those things might change because you are loved. You may know already where God wants to breathe change and wholeness into you, bringing your life more into line with the person you were meant to be all along. Love can and does and will transform us in every way—our ideology, our opinions, our habits, our values, our priorities, our very names. But it’s not a prerequisite or a requirement, it’s not behavior modification, it never is, not for Love. Love has happened and it is happening and it will happen. It is kind and patient toward you. You’re already so loved, you aren’t earning a breath of love or tenderness more than what you already have just by breathing—just by existing, just by being here in the wonder. Your name is already written in the lines of the hands of the universe, you’re star-breath-of-dust and you are beloved, intimately, faithfully, wholly. It’s your lifelong rock, you are known. You are loved with delight and abundance, with choice and desire, with covenantal love. And watch now, the places of weakness will become places of strength. Your desert will bloom with flowers. The well will never run dry. Everything will be redeemed. You are so loved. You are so loved. You are so loved.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

t’s my church home. I will never go anywhere else!” I smile when I read those words on our church’s Facebook page, but I know differently. Nobody stays forever. In fact, I’m pretty sure the only person not eventually leaving is my wife. People come, and people go, often for all the wrong reasons. • They grow bored with your teaching. “I’m not getting fed any longer.” • You’re not new and exciting anymore. “We feel called to support a new pastor in town.” • They don’t like the music. “We don’t do my favorite songs enough and the music is too loud.” • They’re struggling relationally. “I’m having some issues with Bob and feel it’s best to just move on.” • It seems like you’re all about numbers and reaching new people. “What about me?” Of course, there are a hundred other reasons given, but they always boil down to one: They don’t love you anymore, or at least not as much as they used to. Let’s face it, people rarely leave what they truly love. They don’t leave a dream job that they love. They don’t leave a spouse whom they love. They don’t leave a church that they love. It just doesn’t happen. We do what we want to do because we want to and because of our affections. Sadly, when it comes to matters of the heart, we humans are a fickle lot (and I include me in that we). Driven by emotions, we tend to make a lot of our decisions based on the way we feel rather than on what’s best for others or for God’s kingdom. I’ve been pastoring for nearly 35 years. I’ve been a church planter, a staff pastor and the senior pastor of both small and large churches. My point is, I’ve heard thousands of people show up at church and say, “Best church-evah!” Until it’s not. And the rejection used to shred my soul. So how do you handle this reality of human fickleness?

A life anchored on the Rock

saint walks with a limp. I’m not cynical, but I am a realist. Everybody’s leaving; even your most faithful member will eventually die. So stop fighting what you cannot control. You’ll sleep better.

Get over it. Rather than fixate on the ones who leave, focus on the thousands in your community who have no relationship with Christ or His Church. I know it hurts when you’ve poured your life into a person, and they leave. I know your shepherd heart cares deeply for the sheep, and you worry when they wander. However, while you’re bleeding out over shifting saints or wandering warriors, tens of thousands in your area are destined for a Christ-less eternity unless you reach them soon. The harvest is still ripe, and we still have a job to do. Learn from it. They might be leaving for all the wrong reasons, but that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing wrong. Don’t go navel-gazing-crazy, but don’t get stubborn either. Maybe there’s a grain of truth in their parting shot, and you need to hear it. Filter out the ugliness of any departing words often spoken in anger, and ask, “Is there something I need to see here?” By the way, there’s always something you can learn. For years, I read a passage in John 2:2325 (NIV) and it baffled me. John wrote about Jesus, “Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.” People got excited about Jesus the miracle-worker. They wondered if He might be the Promised One. Jesus loved them, but He knew the nature of man. He would not entrust Himself to people. He knew what people are made of and the character of humanity. Jesus wasn’t cynical; He had realistic expectations, and His call was not dependent on our applause. Love and serve people. Teach, challenge, inspire and correct your church with a hopeful heart. But when they leave, stay the course. Adjust your expectations, and entrust your heart to the One who promised never to leave or forsake you. Son. Brother. Husband. Father. Uncle. Grandfather. Pastor. Friend. Most of all...child of God and humbled by His love!

Selie Visa Scripture passage: "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash" (Matthew 7:24-27). The two builders: This parable of Jesus concerns a wise man and a foolish man. One built his house on rock; the other built his house on sand. The difference in their houses was the foundations. Both man faced life’s difficulties… “The rain came down, the streams rose, the winds blew.” The house built on the rock stood. The house built on the sand “fell with a great crash.” Palestine is known for torrential rains that can turn dry valleys (wadis) into raging torrents. Only storms reveal the quality of the work of the two builders. The point is that the wise person builds to withstand anything. Jesus is illustrating that we can live wisely or foolishly. It depends on where we lay our foundation. A wise person represents those who put Jesus' words into practice; they are building to withstand anything. Those who pretend to have faith, or have a merely intellectual commitment, are foolish builders. When the storms of life come, their structures fool no one, above all not God.

The ‘fool’ in the scripture: The word Jesus used for the wise builder is not the word for philosophical wisdom; rather, it is the word for Accept it. Stink rises as garbage triggers war of words among politicians

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (iANS): The stink is getting stronger, by the day. For, politics in the national capital is now literally down in the dumps - garbage dumps. The latest war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) comes in the wake of a very public tussle between Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government and Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung over the posting and transfer of senior bureaucrats in the national capital. Thankfully, the political fireworks over the powers of the state government and Jung went silent - at least for a while - after the matter reached the court. However, the bad blood created by the political spat between the two sides was sure to come to the fore sooner or later. And come it did. The strike by over 10,000 sanitation workers posted in East and North municipal corporation over non-payment of salaries for the past two months due to "funds crunch" provided another opportunity to politicians to add to the bad blood in the corridors of power in the national capital. Though the sanitation workers had struck work for the last 10 days or so, authorities reportedly hardly seemed to care for the inconvenience caused to the general public. It required the media - and of course a directive from the Delhi High Court - for the authorities to act. And fast. As the electronic me-

Will fight for your rights: Rahul to safaiwalas

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (iANS) :Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday reiterated his support for Delhi's sanitation workers, saying he will give his "whole life" to fight for the rights of the under-privileged. This was Gandhi's second consecutive meeting with the sanitation workers at the East Delhi MCD office. "I am not talking about sanitation staff alone but wherever the poor people are being suppressed. Wherever people in suit-boot or whether they are from Aam Aadmi (Party) are not doing their work, I will stand by them," he said. The Congress leader had met some of the sanitation workers on Friday and assured his full support. "I stood with them and will stand with them in future also. I am ready to stand with them everywhere. I told them I will join them whenever they need me," he said. "Yesterday (Friday), I was with them for 15 minutes but I am willing to give hours, days, months, years and my whole life for them," he said. Gandhi accused the Centre and the city government of passing the buck. dia continued to broadcast footage of garbage pileups in Patparganj, Mayur Vihar and other areas of East and North municipal corporations, Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung on June 12 ordered the release of Rs.493 crore to the municipal corporations to "facilitate payment of salaries to sanitation workers". Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court directed the city government to release the due salaries of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) employees by June 15. It also asked for a response by June 19 on the plea seeking directions for payment of salaries to the employees and removal of garbage from

"You keep the city clean... they are not bothered. If you go to the central government, it tells you to go to the Delhi government, who will again ask you to go to the central government... these are all excuses. I am with you... you call me and I will sit with you here even for 10-15 days," he told the workers. On Friday, as the strike by the sanitation workers was called off, the Congress claimed it was due to Gandhi's intervention that Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung finally released money for their salaries. "Rahul Gandhi has explicitly said Delhi's safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) keep the city clean and they are like soldiers of an army," Congress spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said at a press conference here. "Now that there is so much garbage on the streets, the 'Swachh Bharat Mission' of the prime minister and the broom symbol of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are not to be seen," he said. Over 15,000 workers were on strike for the last 10 days protesting non-payment of their salaries for over two months. They called off the strike after Jung announced that he would release Rs.493 crore for their salaries.

roads. Amid fast-paced developments, the cacophony generated by the usual blame game among the politicians reached a crescendo. The BJP claimed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal "doesn't know how to govern and is only interested in petty politics". Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay accused Kejriwal of keeping himself "busy fighting, ever since he took over as chief minister. He went on to say that the central government had given AAP government the required money and asked him to "stop dragging Prime Minister

(Narendra) Modi into it... stop playing petty politics". Not to be left behind in this battle to grab the maximum eyeballs and remain etched in the voting public's mind, AAP too conveniently dumped the blame for the sanitation workers's woes on the BJP and the Modi government. AAP leader Dilip Pandey claimed funds meant for workers' salaries were used for other purposes. Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh accused the BJP of trying to "convert Delhi into a garbage dump". The AAP even termed the civic bodies of Delhi as the "world's most corrupt organisations", demanding a probe into non-clear-

ance of salaries. An AAP leader even alleged that "Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung are punishing people of Delhi". The Congress, in turn, accused both the AAP and the BJP for the mess! "I am here with with you... if you want me to sit with you (on dharna), I will sit for an hour, two hours or 10 hours... I have time for you," Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said during his meeting with striking workers at Patparganj on Friday. Where does all this blame game between the BJP, Congress and AAP lead to? Nowhere! Except that politicians of all hues hog media limelight, act their part on television channels for a few seconds every day, make exagerrated claims on their abilities and capabilities while deriding political rivals and then fade away. On the other hand, an exasperated public is left wondering if it voted all these worthies to power to fight like cats in full media and public glare. Or, whether they are indeed entitled to a semblance of governance and development, platitudes which these politicians mouth almost on a daily basis. The biggest casualty of the one-upmanship currently on between the AAP government and Jung, allegedly backed by the Narendra Modi government and the Congress is good governance and public welfare.

discharged after first aid. Police have shifted the locals from the affected area to safer places as a precautionary measure, he added. Many of them have reported uneasiness in breathing and some of them fainted. Police have registered a case against the driver, who is missing after the incident. Punjab Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jyani told reporters in Chandigarh that he came to know about the incident at 1.30 a.m. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal directed the Ludhiana deputy commissioner and the senior superintendent of police to conduct an inquiry, he said. The government an-

nounced an ex-gratia Rs.100,000 to the next of kin of the dead. All medical expenses of the gas-hit would be borne by the state government. Official sources said the impact of the gas leak was felt even more than two kilometres from the accident site. "Over 1,000 people residing in the vicinity of the accident scene were directly affected," said an official. Twenty patients, mostly complaining of eye irritation and nausea, were admitted to the Civil Hospital in Ludhiana. As a precautionary measure, the district administration summoned teams of the National Disaster Response Force from Laddowal in Ludhiana and Bathinda.

US asks India, Pakistan to cool Tatkal booking timings 'Building Ram temple still on BJP's agenda' down after Myanmar strike to change from June 15

wAShiNgToN, JuNe 13 (iANS): While declining comment on India's surgical strike on militants in Myanmar, the US has asked India and Pakistan to take steps to reduce tensions and move toward resuming dialogue. "I don't have a comment on that specific operation," US State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke told reporters Friday when asked if the US supported or was concerned over India's cross border strike in Myanmar, a move that has raised hackles in Pakistan. But "we encourage India and Pakistan to take steps to reduce tensions and to move towards resuming talks," he said. "The relationship between India and Pakistan is critical to advancing peace

and stability in South Asia, so we welcome any steps India and Pakistan can take to reduce tensions and move toward resuming dialogue," Rathke said. "We encourage India and Pakistan to take those kinds of steps, and we believe that India and Pakistan each have a mutual interest in addressing the threat posed by violent extremism and terrorism," he said. Asked if the US had reached out officially to India or Pakistan to defuse tensions over the Myanmar strike, Rathke said: "Well, we've encouraged a reduction of tensions on both sides at high levels, so that's something we've mentioned." The spokesman also expressed concern over Pakistan's crackdown on Save

Declare non-involvement in drug trafficking: SC judge to lawmakers

MANAli, JuNe 13 (iANS):To check the menace of drug trafficking, a Supreme Court judge on Saturday asked elected representatives to file an affidavit stating that they are not involved in the racket. The elected representatives should file an affidavit stating that they are not involved in drug cultivation or trafficking in any manner, Justice T.S. Thakur of the Supreme Court said in his valedictory address at a seminar on the drug menace here. Urging the politicians to join the fight against contraband drugs, he also asked the panchayat members to report the illegal cultivation of cannabis to the police. The three-day seminar, "Drug menace in India: Overview, challenges and solutions", was organised by the Himachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority.

Exhorting police to go after the kingpins of the illegal trade, Justice Thakur stressed the need to send investigators for training to judicial academies to plug the loopholes in the investigation. Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir said drug abuse in India has assumed alarming proportions. He said drug addicts have to be treated and rehabilitated. State Health Minister Kaul Singh said the state government had taken various steps to curb the menace."Raids are being conducted routinely to destroy the illicit cultivation of cannabis. Unfortunately this is not an easy task because the plant grows wildly in the hills and it is difficult to know whether it is wild or cultivated," he said.

the Children organisation. Rathke could not say whether the issue had been discussed in Islamabad, "but it's certainly a matter of concern to us." "Save the Children is an international nongovernment organization. They do important work," he said. Rathke also did not have an update on expression of similar concern over India blacklisting some NGOs a few weeks ago. "We expressed our concerns and we've raised those with the Indian authorities. I don't have an update to offer here." Earlier in a press statement, Department Spokesperson John Kirby said the US was "concerned about Pakistan's crackdown on international charitable organizations and other NGOs."

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (pTi): The timings for booking Tatkal tickets in AC and non-AC classes will change from June 15 as the Railways has staggered the schedule to reduce the load on the ticketing site and booking windows. Currently, the booking under Tatkal scheme opens at 10 AM on the previous day of journey from train originating station. "It has been decided that from June 15, timings for booking of Tatkal tickets will be staggered for AC and nonAC classes to 10 AM onwards and 11 AM onwards respectively," said a senior Railway Ministry official. "The change has been effected to facilitate hasslefree booking by reducing the load on the server," he said. Currently about 10,000 to 12,000 tickets are be-

ing booked online IRCTC ticketing site at peak hours. "Staggering the timing for AC and non-AC Tatkal tickets will help reducing load at windows and the ticketing sites," he said. Hence, now the reservation under Tatkal scheme will open at 10 AM on the previous day of journey from train originating station for AC classes whereas that for non-AC classes will start at 11 AM on the previous day of journey from train originating station. Moreover, all types of ticketing agents including IRCTC agents will now be debarred from booking non-Tatkal tickets for 30 minutes from the opening of bookings, that is from 8 am to 8.30 am for general classes, from 10 am to 10.30 am for Tatkal AC classes, and from 11 am to 11.30 am for Tatkal non-AC classes.

bAlliA, JuNe 13 (pTi): Union Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot today said that building Ram temple is still on BJP's agenda and the party has not left it. "Ram temple is still BJP's issue and the party has not left it. When there is blessing of Lord Ram then his temple will also get constructed," Gehlot said while denying that BJP has

taken U-turn on the issue. "As of now we are waiting for the verdict of the Supreme Court on the issue," the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment As of now we are waiting for the verdict of the Supreme Court on the issue," the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment added. Hitting out at Congress,

Gehlot said the party which prevented Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar from entering Lok Sabha was now staking claim on him. "Ambedkar belongs to all people. Rahul and Sonia Gandhi are staking their claims, which is not right. Congress always insulted him and did not allow him to enter Parliament by fielding its candidate against him," he said.

'Bill to empower transgenders in next session' bAlliA (up), JuN 13 (pTi): The government today said that it would introduce a bill in the next session of Parliament to bring transgenders in the mainstream of the society. "In this bill, provisions would be made for transgenders to get facilities similar to the SC/ST, OBC and nomads in education and development sectors," Minister for Social Justice

and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot told reporters here. He said that the Centre would take several steps to bring them in the mainstream and action would be taken from social security point of view. The minister apprised that the Centre was seriously considering to constitute a board or council for transgenders at the na-

tional level. Gehlot said that concrete measures were being taken for the umpliftment of the physically challenged. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was making efforts to groom the talent of physically challenged people and to ensure their contribution in country's development, he further said.

Diabetes: The epidemic that Indians created

New Delhi, JuNe 13 (iANS/iNDiASpeND): Sharad Tripathi of Meerut developed diabetes five years ago, at 33, “no thanks to the stressful life of a sales person that involves a lot of travel, eating out and irregular meal times, and no time for exercise". Just when Tripathi learnt to manage his condition — with medication and lifestyle changes — his mother, in her mid-60s, developed diabetes. Tripathi senior joined the club a year later, at age 70. Tripathi found himself sharing the dos and don’ts of living with diabetes with his parents. The family’s predicament indicates how fast the disease is sweeping India, enveloping entire generations, ignoring age and setting new global records, as it trebled over the past two decades. In 1995, India had 19.4 million diabetics. Within 19 years, that number had more than tripled to 66.8 million in 2014, according

to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). That makes India, home to 17 percent of the world’s population, also home to 17 percent of the world’s diabetics. Another 77 million Indians are currently believed to be pre-diabetic, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research. In 2010, diabetes stood 18th in the list of diseases by years of life lost, up from 31 in 1990, as per the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010. Deaths attributable to diabetes grew 41 percent from 161,000 to 227,300 between 2000 and 2012, according to the World Health Organisation. That increase was enough to catapult diabetes into the top 10 of killer diseases in India. The IDF pegs annual deaths due to diabetes in India at more than one million, possibly because poorly controlled diabetes brings on other killer diseases. Diabetes in India now

cuts across all age groups and geographies. Although it is more prevalent in urban areas, rural India will catch up as lifestyles change. In cities like Chennai,Delhi and Kochi, one in five adults is diabetic. There is little doubt that India is witnessing a diabetes epidemic — brought on by Indians. We aren’t like that only Some offer the old excuse for India’s diabetes explosion — that a predisposition to diabetes is written in our genes. Those of Indian ethnicity have a genetic propensity to acquire metabolic syndrome, a set of five conditions of which you need only three to enter the class. One condition is both visual and measurable: the apple-shaped body. The others are measurable: high blood pressure, low highdensity lipoprotein (HDL), high triglycerides and high fasting blood-glucose. Metabolic syndrome

increases the risk for developing diabetes over the next five years five-fold, according to Enas A Enas, American-Indian cardiologist and head of the CADI (Coronary Artery Disease among Asian Indians) Research Foundation in the USA. “If you have metabolic syndrome, consider yourself in line for diabetes,” said Seema Gulati, head of the Nutrition Research Group, Center of Nutrition & Metabolic Research (CNET), National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation. Indians tend to have more fat than muscle at a given body mass index, visà-vis Caucasians. Obesity is a known risk factor for diabetes. Children of people with diabetes tend to develop the disease. A study in Chennai found 55 percent of the offspring of two diabetic patients had either diabetes or impaired glucose

tolerance, a pre-diabetic condition, compared to 15.6 percent of those with no family history of diabetes. The upward trend of diabetes explains why current generations cannot blame their genetic heritage for the ongoing diabetes explosion. “The influence of globalisation and urbanisation are the single biggest factors for India’s diabetes epidemic,” said V. Mohan of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai, and founder of Madras Diabetes Research Foundation. “Our eating habits now resemble the west and we’ve adopted sedentary lifestyles.” Indians have traded dal-sabzi-roti for pizzas, burgers and other caloriedense goodies. Researchers Nikhil Tandon and Nishant Raizada estimate that city-dwellers consume up to 32 percent of the daily energy requirement as fat. We rely on cars to get around. We’ve hired help

and bought machines to perform household calorieburning chores, and, for the most part, not bothered to replace those activities with exercise. At work too, more Indians than ever before are employed in sedentary white-collar jobs. In other words, Indians are bringing diabetes on themselves. It boils down to life choices If faulty lifestyle is the cause, lifestyle modification is the cornerstone of diabetes management. Overall, the chances of diabetes depend 80 percent on the environment, 20 percent on genes, said Anoop Misra, chairman, Fortis Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases and Endocrinology, and chairman, National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation. By aggressively pursuing changes, diabetics can manage without medication or with lower doses of drugs.

A look at the Rupert Murdoch boys' club: Who's in and out Ryan Nakashima AP Business Writer

Sibling rivalries. A quest for power. An affair. A scandal. The turbulent lives of 84-year-old billionaire Rupert Murdoch and his heirs returned to the spotlight this week as the aging magnate took steps to hand over control of the media empire he built nearly from scratch. The Murdoch family — whose assets include The Wall Street Journal, Fox News and the 20th Century Fox movie studio — in some places garners the type of paparazzi coverage its global outlets have bestowed on royals. But unlike with royals, in the Murdoch family, the eldest child's inheritance is never ensured. Once it was Lachlan, then it was James, and now both seem to be positioned to soon control the media behemoth that split into two separate entertainment and publishing companies two years ago: News Corp. and 21st Century Fox. And in the wings operates spurned daughter Elisabeth, whose independent voice and fortune have made her one of London's top socialites and a media power in her own right. "Between who's on top and who's arriving and who's departing — that's always changing," says Michael Wolff, a Murdoch biographer and author of "The Man Who Owns The News: Inside the Secret World of Rupert Murdoch."

Taliban kill 20 police officers in attack KAnDAhAR, JUne 13 (AP): Taliban fighters overran multiple checkpoints in a nighttime raid in Afghanistan's volatile southern Helmand province, killing at least 20 police officers as the battle raged into Saturday, authorities said. The assault came as Afghanistan's military acknowledged the Taliban controls at least four districts across the country. The attacks in Helmand hit police checkpoints in the Musa Qala district, said Mohammad Ismail Hotak, the head of the province's joint coordination of police and military operations. He said the attacks wounded at least 10 officers, though the Taliban also seemed to have suffered high casualties. The spokesman for the Interior Ministry, Sediq Sediqqi, said fighting ended Saturday afternoon with around 30 insurgents killed, including a group leader he named as Abdul Hadi. Saqi Jan, the head of police logistics in Musa

Qala, said area checkpoints were manned by officers from the neighboring district of Baghran who had been forced out by earlier Taliban attacks. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks. The militants have been targeting vulnerable police checkpoints across the country since launching their summer offensive in April. Last month, a Taliban attack in Helmand's Naw Zad district killed at least 19 police officers. Afghan army Gen. Afzel Aman, the head of the Defense Ministry's operational department, told journalists Saturday that four districts are now under Taliban control in the country: Nawa in Ghazni province, Baghran and Dishu in Helmand province and Khak-e Afghan in Zabul province. "Fighting is going on almost everywhere compared to last year, and many places are under threat of enemy attack," Aman said.

Aid-dependent Nepal says needs $6.6 billion for post-quake rebuilding Recent quakes have increased the number of poor in Nepal by 700,000 KAthmAnDU, JUne 13 (ReUteRs): Earthquake-battered Nepal will ask international donors to support a reconstruction plans that is expected to cost $6.6 billion over five years, the government said on Saturday. Two quakes on April 25 and May 12 killed 8,787 people and destroyed more than 500,000 homes, affecting 2.8 million of the Himalayan nation's 28 million people. Losses to the economy from Nepal's worst disaster on record stand at $7 billion, including from tourism, the government said in a Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report. Suman Prasad Sharma, a senior finance ministry official, said 36 countries and 24 donor agencies had been invited to a conference on June 25 to pledge support for reconstruction. "We have expectations of a very handsome and good support from our donors during the conference," Sharma said at a function in Kathmandu. Currently, Nepal gets twothirds of the cost of its economic development in international aid.

Government officials said some donors who cannot pledge more aid could still help Nepal by writing off debt the country owes or delaying repayment schedules. Nepal does not have commercial borrowings from international lending agencies. Concessional loans mainly from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank account for 18 percent of Nepal's gross domestic product, according to the officials. The government spends $300 million in debt repayment every year. Local donors say postdisaster reconstruction must be more accountable in a country that ranked 126 of 176 nations surveyed in Transparency International's corruption perception index in 2014, compared with 116 a year earlier. Nepal's annual economic growth is expected to slow down to 3.04 percent, the lowest in eight years, from 4.6 percent estimated earlier, according to its statistics bureau, due to the impact of the earthquakes on tourism and infrastructure. One in every four Nepalis lives on a daily income of less than $1.25. The quakes have also set back Nepal's efforts to fight poverty by increasing the number of poor by 700,000 to 7.78 million, according to Govind Raj Pokharel, vice chairman of the National Planning Commission.

SKorea and WHO downplay pandemic potential of MERS Kim Tong-Hyung Associated Press

Experts from the World Health Organization and South Korea on Saturday downplayed concerns about the MERS virus spreading further within the country, which recorded its 14th death and a dozen new infections, but said it was premature to declare the outbreak over. After a weeklong review of the outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome, the panel of experts told a news conference that there was no evidence to suggest the virus is spreading in the community. The outbreak in South Korea has so far been occurring only in hospitals, among patients, family members who visited them and medical staff treating them. The virus has spread at a pattern similar to previous outbreaks in the Middle East, and the sequencing studies of samples from South Korea show no signs that the virus has increased its ability to transmit between humans, said WHO Assistant Director Keiji Fukuda.

While the infections seem to be stagnating, the South Korean government must continue to maintain strong control measures, such as thoroughly tracing patients' contacts and preventing suspected patients from traveling, because it's still early to declare the situation over, he said. The continued discovery of new cases has created an impression that the outbreak is getting bigger, but Fukuda noted that many of the cases being reported were of people who were infected in the past. New infections appear to be declining, which suggests that the government's control measures are having an impact, he said. "Now, because the outbreak has been large and is complex, more cases should be anticipated," he said. There has been widespread fear here of the poorly understood disease, which has no vaccine and had a mortality rate as high as 40 percent in previous outbreaks. There also had been growing criticism over failures by health workers and the government to ini-

tially recognize and quickly contain the disease. Fukuda said that overcrowded emergency rooms and hospital wards might have contributed to a wider-than-expected transmission of the virus, which usually spreads poorly between people. South Korea's habits of "doctor shopping" — visiting multiple facilities to treat the same infection — and

the custom of having many friends and family members visiting hospitalized patients might have also facilitated the spread, he said. A 67-year-old woman who had been combating thyroid problems and high blood pressure before she was confirmed as having MERS died early Saturday, becoming South Korea's 14th fatality from the virus,

the Health Ministry said. Nearly 140 people in the country have been diagnosed with MERS since last month — including 12 new cases reported Saturday — in the largest outbreak outside Saudi Arabia. Among those infected, 16 are in serious condition, Jeong Eun-kyeong, a senior official from the Korea Centers for Disease Con-

trol and Prevention, told reporters. About 2,900 schools and kindergartens remained closed Friday, and more than 4,000 people were isolated as of Saturday after possible contact with those infected, the Health Ministry said. Two hospitals, including one in Seoul, also were temporarily closed after MERS patients were found to have had contact with hundreds of people at the two facilities before they were diagnosed. Experts think MERS can spread in respiratory droplets, such as by coughing. But transmissions have mainly occurred through close contact, such as living with or caring for an infected person. MERS belongs to the family of coronaviruses that includes the common cold and SARS, and can cause fever, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure. Most of the deaths in South Korea have been of people suffering from pre-existing medical conditions, such as respiratory problems or cancer.

Prospects dim for peace talks between Yemen’s warring parties DUBAI, JUne 13 (ReUteRs): Yemen's warring parties are heading to Geneva for U.N.-sponsored talks from Monday, but there are few if any signs that either is ready to make the compromises necessary for a deal. The United Nations envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, has said the talks can end more than two months of conflict that has killed almost 2,600 people, and save the Arabian Peninsula country from permanent division. But he also said on Friday that the sides would initially not even sit at the same table."All the parties are still barricaded behind their positions and continue to bet on war rather than a political settlement," said Abdel-Bari Taher, a Yemeni analyst. This may be because President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi insists that the talks be limited to discussing the implementation of U.N. Security Coun-

cil Resolution 2216, which calls for the Houthis to quit Yemen's main cities and recognise his authority. But it may also be because the Iranian-allied Houthis see little reason to give ground, having increased the territory under their control despite 11 weeks of aerial bombing by a coalition of Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia who fear that Iran is expanding its influence. Together, Houthi fighters and troops loyal to veteran former president Ali Abdullah Saleh have seized large parts of Yemen including the capital Sanaa and much of the port city of Aden. Meanwhile a humanitarian crisis has worsened dramatically. The aid agency UNICEF says 80 percent of the population, or more than 20 million people, need some form of aid.

The Houthis say they are pursuing a revolution against a corrupt government and Islamist militants, and deny any military or economic links to Iran, which also says it gives them only diplomatic support.

Houthi leaders say they will attend the talks from Monday without preconditions, although they have complained about a lack of clarity on who will attend and what will be discussed. Discussions were originally

scheduled for Sunday, but delayed as one of the delegations was arriving late, the United Nations said. The exiled government, meanwhile, is showing signs of divisions between Hadi and his deputy, Khaled Bahah. Bahah was in Djibouti and did not attend a meeting on Wednesday in Riyadh, where Hadi's government now sits, at which the negotiators were chosen. Farea al-Muslimi, a researcher at Carnegie Middle East Centre, said they appeared to have been appointed largely on the basis of their loyalty to Hadi. "Their selection tells you how little is being expected of the talks, and is a sign that attending them is symbolic and more a result of international pressure than genuine will to reach a resolution." Wales, iceland move closer destination Homeward- 1 to qualifying for euro 2016 public discourse

I

took a flight from New Delhi to Dimapur. It was after nearly five years I decided to visit home- A place where my heart is and a place that speaks my language and stimulates every senses of my mind’s desires. As I started packing, I realized how time had travelled very fast. My imaginations took me to wonderland about my family, friends, food, weather, those shanty ‘headquarters’ all over Kohima town, roads, and everything under the heavens. My imaginations never left my mind till I ended up at the New Delhi domestic airport. The domestic airport is an exasperating mess. It is like any other railway station in India, minus the stench and boisterous noise. The cacophony begins right at the entrance. With approximately 10 entry gates and queues of 25-30 people (maybe more), and piles of luggage at every gate, I encountered the unthinkable human traffic at 6:30 in the morning. After more than half an hour, I entered the check-in area. Once inside, for 3 minutes I must have looked like a pumpkin straight from the field, not knowing where to go and what to do. There were people intersecting at every inch that added to the confusion because some were going somewhere and some were coming from somewhere. I realized I needed to get my boarding pass lest I miss home after all these years. Delhi traffic is a nightmare, but this human traffic inside the airport is like “a nightmare dressed like a daydream” (and I found a rare occasion to express any form of gratitude to Taylor Swift for this statement). I managed to attract the attention of a ground staff and asked him about my whereabouts and where should I go for the passes. He pointed towards a direction which looked like a queue! Amidst 10’s and 50’s of counters, they have managed to open boarding pass kiosks. Another introduction to a simple and convenient life, yet, it is another reason to stand and “dillydally” my right and left legs at irregular intervals. The lines were long, but maybe 5-10 persons lesser. Took me about 15 minutes, but thankfully another staff helped me to get the pass. Next was the check-in queue. It is a well known fact that Indians and queues do not get along well. The lines are always crooked and within the blink of an eye, there are sub-lines formed, and within no time one fails to identify which is the main line and which is the by-line. So, a huge check-

in line is prone to many adventurous moments and movements. A fine young lady decided to jump the line because she also identified a friend, who was as fine as her much ahead on the line. They had made eye contact, which I pretended not to see, and sadly, I was not the only one to witness the “sisters in crime”. As she pushed her trolley towards her friend ahead, pretending she was on the phone and trying to find her way, a fine middle- aged lady who was just ahead of her decided to give her a 3 and half minutes of class on maintaining line. I thought I heard heartwarming applauses especially from the front side. She obliged, went back and stood where she belonged. After more than half an hour the line ahead thinned as the line behind elongated to a far distance. Checking in was not difficult since I prefer travelling light. But there were others who were carrying their entire houses so they were the nuisances responsible for such long lines and for causing so much leg pain. What follows after depositing the luggage is a mystifying agony. All the people from all those entry gates, check-in lines, counters, and other areas came together culminating into a serpentine queue towards the gatehouse. Just when you thought your burdens are off your shoulder and you are free from the rucksacks and brief-cases, you get entangled in the web of a torturous single snaky line. I pity the words “emergency” “urgent” “late” and the likes. People with blood pressure would have popped some pills and heart patients must have faced attack-like situations a few times. But the show must go on! We forget all our weariness and hard times when we see things that send instant currents of pleasure to our mind. In this regard, I believe we are all children at heart, and is similarly thought to be so by the ones who build and administer the airport. Smack at the gatehouse are showrooms, eateries, wine shops, and other attractions. After so much standing and strutting, it is like hitting the child with the rod and then giving a chocolate bar to pacify. Weird human psychology, but they got it right. I saw some people buying stuffs from the showrooms. There is always somebody in the crowd. Nevertheless, I boarded the craft finally. By then all the pleasurable imaginations I had prior to starting the journey deserted me. My mind was completely preoccupied with the mental picture of eternal lines

and queues of human, all going to a dark tunnel and whatnot. A quick halt at Kolkata and then we headed for Dimapur. This might sound funny to very few, but it really is funny. It was announced that we would be hovering around the sky for sometime because of traffic congestion at Dimapur airport. I thought cars, but why would a huge craft make way for tiny cars, and that too in an airport. So we hovered around the sky for about 20 minutes before we touched down. It was my first time at Dimapur airport. What looked like a grassland shown in National Geographic Channel with tall grasses everywhere was the Dimapur airport. I was told that there are only two flights that operates from Dimapur (or Nagaland)- Air India and Indigo. If there was a weird situation and the departure and arrival flights get stuck at the airport altogether at once, there will be a total of 4 aircrafts (a situation which would make many of us immensely proud because when will we ever see four aircrafts stationed at once in Nagaland!?). Then there might be a traffic jam. But all I saw were some trolley cars, an oil tanker, and a few ground staff workers which are not capable to cause jam from any angle, whatsoever. Later, I was told by the person who came to pick me up, that Air India took off about 20 minutes back. Bingo! Therefore the jam! Isn’t that funny? As we deplaned, the airport shuttle was waiting to transfer us to the gatehouse. Strangely and interestingly some people started walking towards the arrival without the help of the shuttle. It was just a 2 minute walk! I would have walked too had I known. I was in Nagaland at last! A journey which started at 5:40 in the morning ended at 1:30 in the afternoon after much experience. However, a thought loomed over. More than two decades have passed since the celebrated “Look East Policy” was initiated by the Government of India. It was supposed to open windows of economic opportunities for the NE States, and especially Nagaland with international boundaries. Clearly, the outcome of the policy has not had much impact in Nagaland, or else our airport would be buzzing with activities by now, no? We drove off towards the direction that says ‘city-way’ (or similarly like that). I was breathing local air already, or so I thought! Toshi Longkumer New Delhi

Cases should be settled with reasons without taking oath

O

They did not agree and the case was filed in D.B’s court seeking mutual oath. The day of hearing I attended and after both sides gave their statements, I asked them whether they tried to

settle the dispute amicably between them before going to Judiciaries or not. They replied, “No”. Then I said, “Taking oath by heaven and earth is against the teaching of Christ. He taught, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” (Mat. 5:32) - If you take oath mutually, one side or the other will be sinning. ales and Iceland both moved closer to qualifying for the 2016 European Championship on Friday, while the game between Croatia and Italy was overshadowed by a swastika symbol that had been etched onto the pitch. Gareth Bale moved Wales closer to a first major tournament since 1958 by scoring to secure a 1-0 victory over Belgium that lifted the country top of Group B. Iceland is trying to qualify for its first ever tournament and came from a goal down to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 and take over the lead in Group A. In Group H, Croatia maintained a two-point lead over Italy after a 1-1 draw at home in Split, but the talking point was the Nazi symbol that could be clearly seen outlined on the pitch — apparently etched in by someone before the game. "We weren't aware of it on the sidelines," Italy coach Antonio Conte said. "Not because of the tension of the match, but you couldn't see it. I was only told about it at the end of the match. There is so much sadness that such a thing could happen."

FiFA corruption scandal deepens federation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, that were "controlled" by former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner. In an interview with British television, Oliver Camps, described as Warner's right-hand man, said he felt "used and abused" by his old friend and associate. "We were like brothers. I realise that I should not have put so much confidence in him because he made me do the wrong thing and I was doing it very innocently. I knew nothing about those things," Camps told Channel 4 News. Warner has denied all charges levelled against him. He was not immediately available for comment. Channel 4 News said Camps, Caribbean football's finance committee chairman, had signed cheques worth millions of dollars on Warner's behalf, which were supposed to finance Trinidad's team in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. It said he was still signing the cheques three years after the World Cup ended. SCANDAL WORSENS It has been another bleak week for FIFA. On Wednesday, FIFA postponed the bidding for the right to host the 2026 World Cup, with Secretary General Jerome Valcke saying during a visit to Russia that it would be "nonsense" to start the process under present circumstances. Then, perhaps reflecting the growing crisis, the usually composed Valcke unburdened himself of an emotional tirade, saying he was being destroyed by the media in his native France and defending his decision to sign off on a $10 million payment at the centre of the U.S. bribery investigation. Brandishing his pen, a clearly irritated Valcke demanded of journalists: "You want me to take this pen and to hit my head and say 'Hey! I have been stupid, I should have asked many more questions?'"

"You have decided that after Blatter I have to be next head to be cut?" Valcke told a news conference. On Thursday, Communications director Walter de Gregorio, the public face of the football body, resigned after telling a joke at the expense of his employers on Swiss television. "The FIFA president, secretary general and media director are sitting in a car. Who's driving. Answer? The police." Despite announcing his resignation, Blatter has remained at his desk, saying he wants to usher in reforms at FIFA before his successor is chosen. FIFA announced that would happen at an election some time between December and February. The German Football Association meanwhile came up with a radical reform plan under which FIFA's voting structure should be based on the "size and sporting relevance" of its member federations. At present, each of FIFA's 209 members has a vote, giving football powerhouses Germany and Brazil the same influence as tiny Pacific islands. Football chiefs in developing countries, who have enjoyed generous funding to promote the game from FIFA during Blatter's 17 years in power, denounced the plan as unfair and racist. The South American confederation CONMEBOL meanwhile came under pressure of its own when Congress in Paraguay, where the football body is based, approved a measure withdrawing immunity from its Asuncion headquarters. A draft bill to remove the immunity was put to Congress last month after U.S. authorities announced indictments of 14 past and present senior football officials and sports media executives connected to FIFA. "There is an urgent need to repeal this law and get on with the investigation," Senator Juan Carlos Galaverna said during a debate over the measure, which is expected to be signed into law by President Horacio Cartes.

Musicians guide to soundcheck

A

n intense sound and light check workshop for musicians and performers was held on June 12 and 13 at Upstairs, Walford, Dimapur. An initiative of Mountain Music, the workshop, titled Soundstation, was conducted in collaboration with Audio Garage, Shiu Lights and Upstairs. The two-day workshop witnessed 22 participants –

all established musicians/ performers. Atsung Jamir of Audio Garage, arguably the best sound engineer in the region, and Samuel Shiu of Shiu Lightings, one of the most creative lighting engineer, were the two resource persons at the workshop. Atsung made participants experience frequencies of music and passed on his knowledge of how bands

and artists can configure their sounds to perfection. Sam, on the other hand, demonstrated and shared techniques of using the perfect lighting and automation, sequences, colours etc. A live stage was set up to make the event as interactive and interesting as possible. Soundstation is part of MMA’s endeavour to help equip musicians on

essential technical knowhow and to be better performers. Soundstation also holds monthly jam sessions at Furtados where musicians from all around come together to jam and make music, in effect, making the sessions a ‘melting pot’ for musicians. The workshop ended on June 13 evening with a live performance from Incipit, DJ Sumika and Akum Jams.

ctress-filmmaker Angelina Jolie, addressing the African Union summit, has called for more global support to end violence against women around the world. Jolie, 40, who is the special envoy to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, sat on a panel of foreign leaders to deliver a speech at the biannual event, held here and Pretoria, South Africa, this year. She lamented that crimes against

women, both in conflict zones and "within societies at peace", are given lesser attention than needed, reported People magazine. "There is a global epidemic of violence against women ? both within conflict zones and within societies at peace ? and it is still treated as a lesser crime and lower priority," the actress-director told the crowded ballroom. "The near-total impunity that exists worldwide for

crimes against women, in conflict zones in particular, means that we are seeing more and more armed groups turn it into their weapon of choice. "Women and girls are bearing the brunt of extremists that revel in treating them barbarically. This is inextricably linked to our overall failure to prevent and end conflicts worldwide, which is causing human suffering on an unprecedented level." The "Unbroken" director, wearing a dark gray Michael Kors dress and beige heels, paid tribute to African victims for their "extraordinary resilience, dignity and strength in the face of trials that would break any of us." "They are some of the most formidable and impressive people I have ever met and they deserve better than to be left alone to suffer," Jolie

and Ronie, vocal instructor of The Jam Tree. Eight of them were selected for the finale as one of the finalists are a group of four, which accounts to 4 finalists for the showdown. There was no age limitation and the youngest contestant is aged 9, from

said. She concluded her speech by stating that the solution needs to be tailored to, and pioneered by, women themselves. "We need policies for longterm security that are designed by women, focused on women, executed by women ? not at the expense of men, or instead of men, but alongside and with men," she said. "There is no greater pillar of stability than a strong, free and educated woman, and there is no more inspiring role model than a man who respects and cherishes women and champions their leadership." She joined former British foreign minister William Hague, Senegalese activist Bineta Diop and Zainab Bangura, who is the UN's Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, on the panel at the event.

Morgan Freeman to host religious series Salman Khan turned down a Rs 7 crore ad offer opposite Katrina Kaif!

S

alman Khan and Katrina Kaif were offered a whopping Rs 7 crore to feature in a commercial together. And while we hear that Katrina was thrilled to be back on screen with Salman even if it was for an advertisement, Salman wasn’t too happy with the idea. In fact, a source close to this development told BollywoodLife that Salman Khan ‘turned down’ this lucrative offer. All has been well between the ex-lovers, who have stood for each other. The duo might have

made appearances and been cordial with each other, but Salman seems to be keeping a safe distance from Katrina as far as work is concerned. The actor had once briefly commented on his ex-girlfriend after meeting her at Mehboob studio in Bandra, he said, “She used to be a friend, but today she is somebody else’s friend. I respect that and I stay away because I don’t want to give someone a reason to tell her, ‘Oh you are still in touch with Salman.’ The past should not intrude in the present.”

There were reports that Katrina was the first choice for Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which eventually went to Kareena Kapoor. Buzz also suggested that Kat was the first choice for Sultan opposite Salman, but the latter turned down

the offer and apparently asked for her to be replaced with another heroine. With Salman again saying a ‘NO’ to this ad with Katrina, it makes us wonder if all’s well between the two.

WoMen's World Cup: us held by swedes, Japan through to last 16

C M Y K

WINNIPEG, JuNE 13 (AP): Sweden held the United States to a scoreless draw at the Women's World Cup on Friday, providing a good result for the Swedes and their coach Pia Sundhage, who used to be in charge of the American team. The United States was a point clear atop Group D, ahead of Australia which beat Nigeria 2-0. Defending champion Japan became the first team to confirm its place in the last 16 after a 2-1 victory over Cameroon while the other Group C game saw Switzerland rout Ecuador 10-1. The Americans were chasing a win which would have assured a place in the knockout stages but could not break down the welldrilled Swedes. The U.S came close to scoring when veteran striker Abby Wambach headed on goal in the 72nd minute but the bouncing shot was tipped over the crossbar by Sweden goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl. Sweden came closer yet in the 77th when only some desperate defending by Meghan Klingenberg prevented the European team going ahead. Klingenberg, a diminutive defender positioned on the line for the Swedish corner, leaped to get her head on a goal-

bound shot by Sweden's Caroline Seger, deflecting it onto the bar and away to safety. Goal-line technology confirmed the ball never crossed the line. The United States needs only a draw from its final group game against Nigeria to be sure of progressing,

while the Swedes will need to beat Australia if they are to make it to the last 16. Japan scored two early goals and held on for a 2-1 win against Cameroon. Aya Sameshima scored in the 6th minute and Yuika Sugasawa added a header off a cross by Aya Miyama in

the 17th. Cameroon pulled a goal back in the 90th minute after a strong run and shot by Ajara Nchout and almost snatched a draw in stoppage time but Gaelle Enganamouit's shot missed just to the left. Australia put itself in a strong position to progress

after beating Nigeria 2-0 thanks to two goals by Kyah Simon. Simon beat Nigeria goalkeeper Precious Dede on a feed from Lisa De Vanna to put the Matildas up 1-0 in the 29th minute. She then found herself unguarded in the front of the goal to put away Samantha Kerr's arc-

ing cross in the 68th minute. Late in the match, Kerr was elbowed in the jaw in an off-the-ball incident which was not seen by the referee. Australia coach Alen Stajcic said the 21-year-old striker would require X-rays to determine if her jaw was broken. Barring an upset defeat for the United States in the last round of group games, Australia will need only a draw against Sweden to reach the next stage. Nigeria must beat the Americans by at least two goals if they are to go through. Switzerland handed another heavy defeat to Ecuador, beating the overwhelmed South Americans 10-1, with Fabienne Humm and Ramona Bachmann both scoring second-half hat tricks. Humm's three goals came within 6 minutes early in the second half, the first on a powerful strike from outside the penalty area in the 47th minute to put Switzerland up 3-0. Bachmann capped her scoring binge in the 81st minute for Switzerland's 10th goal. Eseosa Aigbogun and Martina Moser added goals for Switzerland. Angie Ponce, who was responsible for two own goals, also scored one at the right end with a 64th minute penalty to record Ecuador's first World Cup goal.

StuttGARt, JuNE 13 (AFP): Rafael Nadal defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils, 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday to reach the final of the Stuttgart Open. The Spanish top seed could become the first man to win titles at the event on both clay and this year's new grass surface if he wins

the Sunday final against either second seed Marin Cilic or Serb Viktor Troicki. Nadal dominated Monfils over 79 minutes, defeating the fourth seed despite 11 aces off the French racquet. Nadal, who claimed Stuttgart titles on clay in 2005 and 2007, has won 11 of their 13 meetings.

Mexico and Bolivia end scoreless at Copa America

C M Y K

VINA DEL MAR, JuNE 13 (AP): Mexico and Bolivia played a lackluster 0-0 draw Friday in the second match of the Copa America, the South American championship. The result was disappointing for Mexico, which is playing what amounts to its B team but was still a favorite to beat Bolivia, which has not won a match in this tournament since 1997. DHAKA, JuNE 13 (REutERS): India picked up three Bangladesh wickets in the morning session after declaring their first innings on 462 for six but rain washed out the rest of the fourth day as the one-off test headed for an inevitable draw. India raised hopes of an unlikely win as spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took two wickets and comeback man Harbhajan Singh another to restrict Bangladesh to 111 for three when bad light forced the players off for an early lunch. Opener Imrul Kayes was at the crease on 59 with the experienced Shakib Al Hasan yet to open his account. Left-hander Tamim Iqbal (19) went past former captain Habibul Bashar as Bangladesh's highest run-scorer in tests before he was stumped by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha off Ashwin. Kayes added 81 for the second wicket with Mominul Haque (30) to steady the Bangladesh innings before the latter fell to Harbhajan.
