“Let us pledge to create awareness to adopt ecofriendly ways to save our natural resources including forests and biodiversity and make planet earth a beautiful place to live in,” encouraged Nagaland state Minister for Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Dr Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire today. The Minister said this while observing the World Environment Day at the Botanical Garden in Kohima in an event organized by the Environment, Forests & Climate Change department under the theme ‘Sustainable Consumption and Production.’ The event was one of several held across the state to mark the day which is being observed this year with the slogan ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.’ The Minister cautioned that Nagaland, as per scientific reports from the Indian Institute of Science, is vulnerable to climate change. “It is predicted that in a climate change scenario accentuated by our dwindling forest area, there will be gradual shifting of plant species to higher altitude. is dwindling, there will be shifting of the plant species to higher attitudes and in due course of time some plant species will disappear,” Kire said. Kire lamented that Nagaland is witnessing degradation of its forests due to large scale shifting cultivation, mining, indiscriminate feelings of trees, poaching and killing of wildlife and unplanned development activities. He informed that the Forest Survey of India Report 2011 recorded a forest cover loss of 146 square kilometers, compared to the previous report of 2009. He specifically pointed to the

practice of shifting cultivation as a major reason for the loss of forest cover. The forest cover in the state, based on the Forest Survey of India report 2013 is 80.33% of the state’s geographical area. In terms of forest canopy density classes, the state has 1, 298 km2 under very dense forest, 4,736 km2 under moderately dense forest and 7,010 km2 under open forest. Stressing that the need of the hour is to create awareness among all stake holders, Kire encouraged: “It is only collectively that we can protect the environment.” It is our duty, he

The number for previous years is also lower at 150 and 240 for the year 2012 and 2013 respectively. For the IAS, the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territory cadre has highest number (43%) of defaulters. Nagaland has 54 defaulting IAS cadres (for the past three years) which is 20% of the cadre strength, the data revealed. More than 30 IPS officers in the defaulters’ list are Director Generals of Police. About 15 defaulting IAS officers hold secretary rank in the union government.

Discussions were held on the recent abrogation of the cease-fire with NSCN (K) which Patton said has created law and order problems. A press note from the CMO informed that Rijiju on his part conveyed that the Centre is working on a coordinated strategy with all stakeholders to bring peace to the region. Patton apprised the Union Minister that the Fourteenth Finance Commission had done away with providing central support for the ‘Scheme of Modernisation of Police Forces’ and lamented that in the absence of this scheme, the preparedness of state police forces to meet emerging law and order challenges would be hampered. He further urged Rijiju for a one-time grant to the Dimapur Police Commissionerate.

Dimapur, June 5 (mexn): ACAUT Nagaland on Friday termed the issue of backdoor appointment in the government as a “massive fraud being perpetuated by the political and bureaucratic elite at the cost of deserving society and meritocracy.” Calling serious attention to this menace, which it stated, was turning the whole system topsy-turvy, further compounded by massive drain on the state exchequer, ACAUT Nagaland, in a representation to the Chief Secretary, highlighted a number of proposals for perusal and implementation while putting into perspective the recent AG Report, filed through an RTI. As per the report, between September 2009 and August 2014, 10,823 government employees undertook retirement. According to rule of thumb estimate, during this 5 year period the NPSC would have had conducted exams probably for few hundred posts only, with the various departments advertising or conducting exam for even lesser number of posts. Because, considering the prevailing socio-economic system and the political culture, within this 5 year period, the remaining 10,000 approximate posts would have been filled up through back door, ACAUT noted. Thus keeping in mind the ‘nepotism, favouritism and corruption in the system,’ ACAUT has proposed putting an end to departments conducting internal exams for any post and suggested that sole prerogative should be given to the Nagaland

Public Service Commission (NPSC). It also stated that departments should be barred from advertising vacant posts, new posts, etc., with immediate effect and all requisition for new posts/vacant posts should be forwarded to the NPSC instead. The departments should also be barred from making any ad-hoc appointments for those posts which falls under the purview of NPSC selection exam, since the departments, “instead of requisitioning the vacant posts to the NPSC, for instance against death makes ad-hoc appointments against the said posts for the kith and kin of the powers be.” ACAUT also called for centralized examination for selection of candidates into clerical jobs such as LDA, UDA, etc., to be conducted by NPSC instead of the various departments making their own recruitment which it said was “cent percent bereft of transparency in the selection process.” Highlighting the random backdoor appointment and the utter lack of transparency in the selection process, ACAUT termed it as the biggest concerns in the police sector. It has therefore recommended that written exam and interview for the posts of constabulary/jawan level/ asst. sub-inspectors and sub-inspectors (both armed and unarmed) should be conducted only by the NPSC and not by the selection board constituted by the Home department/PHQ. ACAUT also reminded the chief secretary that in a multi-tribal state like Nagaland, having skewed employment ratio in favour of some districts vis-à-vis others will not only create social disconnect but in the long run result in skewed development between the districts. The State Government has also been urged to pass the Lokayukta Act in the monsoon session of the State Legislative Assembly.

be materialized as both the platforms were said to be too narrow to accommodate the sheds. Kumar’s visit to Dimapur on Friday is part of the Indian Railway Ministry’s 15 day drive by carrying out 23 different activities to celebrate one year of NDA govern-

ment. The Railways Ministry had pledged to send out 80 top officers, who are generally in charge of managing affairs at the policy levels, across the country to inspect stations and interact with passengers and ask them about the quali-

ty of services, food and cleanliness. The day did not bode well for the Railway officials stationed at Dimapur after Kumar noticed certain prohibited activities inside the station right under his nose. For one, during inspection, Kumar detected a shop inside platform no-1 selling tobacco products and mineral water priced above the MRP. The shop keeper was immediately fined, the items seized, while the railway officials received harsh reprimand on the face for being negligent. Kumar also directed the Government Railway Protection Force (GPRF) to tighten security inside the railway station after the media highlighted about frequent harassment of passengers and anti social activities occurring inside the station, which often go unnoticed. The DRM also inspected the ongoing beautification and expansion of the Dimapur Railway Station which is on its way of transforming into a ‘model railway station’ in the North East.

Morung Express News Jalukie | June 5

With the border issue between Assam and Nagaland dragging on for decades without any tangible solution in sight, the United Naga Tribes Association of Border Areas (UNTABA) today disclosed that it is all set to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court. According to UNTABA chairman, Hukavi T Yeputhomi, the writ petition will raise three pertinent issues that UNTABA feels have put Naga people on the back foot with regard to the ancestral land and divided them against their wishes. The UNTABA chairman pointed out that the first Naga Hills District was formed in 1866 under the British Rule and the first boundary of the Naga Hills District was notified in 1867 and amended in 1875. Huakavi said the subsequent 1925 notification of Naga Hills District and Naga Hills Tuensang Area was done without proper survey and mapping and excluded many Naga areas as originally contained in the 1867 notification. The petition will also challenge the 13th amendment of the Indian Constitution or State of Nagaland Act 1962 wherein Nagaland State was created as per the 1925 notification and not the first notification (1867). “We insist that the 1867 notification should be the basis for final settlement and demarcation of boundary between Assam and Nagaland,” the UNTABA chairman told mediapersons. The petition will further contest that the International MacMohan Line (between India and Myanmar) was arbitrarily drawn during the time of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru from erstwhile North East Frontier Agency to Manipur State without consulting Naga people, thereby dividing Naga people against their wishes. Earlier, UNTABA team comprising of the chairman, general secretary Imsumongba Pongen and executive committee member, Richard Haulai, convened a meeting with the Zeliang public leaders civil society at Jalukie town, where UNTABA members apprised the Zelaing community on the latest development vis a vis the border problem between Assam and Nagaland. On the ongoing case in the Supreme Court filed by Assam Government (Suit no. 2 of 1988), the UNTABA chairman said Assam Government is insisting that the border demarcation between the two states should be made on the basis of 1925 notification. “If this is done, then Naga people will be losing some 5,000 square miles of their land to Assam,” he said and added that Nagas must speak out in one voice that they cannot accept the verdict of the Supreme Court till final settlement of the Naga political issue. Hukavi said demarcation of boundary should be done on historical perspective and not verdict of the court. Zeliangrong Baudi (Nagaland) vice president, Raitu Elu, delivered the introductory note and chaired the meeting. The UNTABA team also held a separate meeting with Kuki leaders and public at Ahthibung town.

As the world celebrated Environment Day, in Dimapur, a group of college students led by Young Indians (Yi) members campaigned against littering today. In the sweltering heat, the Yi members and students conducted signature campaigns, distributed trash bags and car stickers to ve-

hicles at gas stations along the highway and at Chumukedima check gate. The Yi Nagaland Chapter organised campaign titled Don’t Litter My Highway started with participants pledging against littering by signing on a banner outside NRL gas station in Padum Pukhuri. The participants then proceeded to Chumukedima check gate. Don’t Litter My High-

way is one of the three campaigns of Young Indians Nagaland Chapter under Clean India Mission (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan). Yi Nagaland Chapter has taken up the national sanitation campaign initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a special project. The other two campaigns are Honking Not OK and Pick Me Up (Litter Picking). Today’s campaign marked

the start of Yi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan project. According to Oren Ovung, chair, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Yi Nagaland Chapter, the objective of the Don’t Litter My Highway is to change perceptions of the act of littering. Young Indians is an integral part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), a non-government, notfor-profit, industry led and

Yi’s pointers to make the campaign successful: • Never throw trash out of your car window even if it is a banana peel. • Place a bag in your car to collect personal trash (or recyclables) instead of tossing them. • If you smoke, never throw your cigarette butts on the ground. Cigarette butts, while small, actually constitute a large part of existing litter. • Get involved in a community clean up. • If you see litter, pick it up. Even if it is one chip bag or straw wrapper – that is one less piece of litter on the street.

ness about the importance of the healthy and green environment in the human lives, to solve the environmental issues by implementing some positive environmental action as well as to make aware common public worldwide that everyone is responsible for saving environment. He said this year theme is “Sustainable consumption and production” with the slogan “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Con-

sume with Care.” “The well-being of humanity, the environment and economies ultimately depends on the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources. Evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources that what the planet can sustainably provide,” Dr. Tseikha said. He regretted that many of the earth ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or

irresponsible change pushed by high population growth and economic development. BY 2050 if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our way of life, he said. “Living well within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future,” he said. He also urged upon the people to celebrate environment day by becoming more conscious of our ecological impact. “Let us think about the environmental consequences of the choices we make. Let us become better stewards of our planet,” he said. Earlier, KVSU president Kevitsu Yhome stressed on the need to initiate something today to tackle environmental issue “if not the future is at risk.” The occasion also witnessed administration of environment day pledge and the participants pledged to be an advocator for a greener and healthier environment.

Army launches massive hunt in Manipur GUWAHATI, JUNE 5 (REUTERS): The Indian army launched an operation in Manipur on Friday to hunt tribal separatist guerrillas who killed at least 20 soldiers in the deadliest attack on security forces in the state in more than two decades. The operation involves hundreds of soldiers on foot with the support of helicopters in the remote mountainous forests close to the border with Myanmar, where insurgents are demanding autonomy for their tribal groups or independence, army and intelligence officers told Reuters. The central government asked the army to "trace and eliminate the insurgents" involved in the attack, a military commander said, asking not to be identified because he is not authorised to speak to the media. As in much of India's remote and underdeveloped northeast, Manipur has been the scene of recurring strife between ethnic and religious groups since independence from British rule in 1947. Manipur Home Minister Gaikhangam informed on Friday that initial line of enquiry had begun in connection with Thursday’s Tengnoupal ambush in which a number of personnel belonging to 6 Dogra Regiment were killed and wounded. Addressing newspersons here, Gaikhangam stated that all efforts will be made by the State Government in the case and described the militant attack “very unfortunate.” Gaikhangam, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, added that Manipur shared the grief of tached to the rest of the India by a thin strip of territory arching above Bangladesh. In culture and appearance, its people have more similarities with Southeast Asia than mainland India. About 2,000 people have been killed in the violence in Manipur over the last decade, according to the South Asian Terrorism Portal. A senior intelligence officer said about 50 tribal guerrillas were involved in

the bereaved families. “The Initial line of enquiry into the incident has started. Manipur Government will take all possible steps in the case,” he assured. He said that paramilitary forces and Army are here for protecting the State and asserted that the hope for repeal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from Manipur will be stalled by such major attacks on the Army. “No good can be brought by continuation of killings,” he said. NE CMs ask Modi to discuss several issues in Bangladesh AGARTAlA/GUWAHATI, JUNE 5 (IANS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Dhaka from Saturday is likely to see the signing of 20 agreements besides talks with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on boosting trade, connectivity and anti-terrorism measures. Chief ministers of several northeastern states, though they are not accompanying Modi, have requested him to raise the issues of infiltration, border trade and connectivity with Bangladesh. According to a top Bangladesh government official in Agartala, Modi's 36-hour stay in Dhaka is likely to see both sides ink as many as 20 agreements. "Modi's predecessor Manmohan Singh could not sign the Teesta treaty due to opposition from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Teesta water sharing pact will cast a shadow during Modi's tour," Tapas Dey, a known expert on Bangladeshi affairs, told IANS Dey, who visited Bangladesh this week, told IANS: "Though Teesta has been a most fundamental issue for decades, this time both the Awami League government and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have agreed that the issue has some internal implica-

tions in Indian politics." BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who refused to pay a courtesy call on Indian President Pranab Mukherjee in Dhaka in March 2013, is likely to call on Modi. "This time the BNP has been very positive towards the visit of the Indian prime minister. Modi might meet Khaleda Zia on June 7 on the latter's request," Dey said. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who along with other northeastern chief ministers accompanied Manmohan Singh on his Bangladesh visit in September 2011, said Modi's trip would strengthen bilateral ties. "The visit is expected to immensely benefit the northeastern states," Sarkar told IANS. He said it was after Tripura's pushing that New Delhi agreed to supply 100 MW electricity from a state power plant to power-starved Bangladesh. Sarkar, a popular face in Bangladesh, said that Dhaka helped "a lot" to tame decades of terrorism in Tripura. He said some camps of northeastern militants still existed in Bangladesh. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has urged Modi to take up issues concerning his state with Hasina. "Modi should take up

the matter of boosting water and surface communication between Assam and Bangladesh and introducing rail links to enhance trade and commercial ties. He must also raise the issue of cross-border infiltration," Gogoi said in a statement. Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma wants more 'border haats' (markets) along the India-Bangladesh border. "Modi can discuss with Hasina about a strategy to develop road connectivity between northeast India and Bangladesh and to use Chittagong port for exports," Sangma told IANS over telephone. On June 7, Modi and Hasina would, over video

conferencing, jointly inaugurate a 'border haat' at Kamalasagar in western Tripura's Sipahijala district, which borders Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh. The 'border haat' will be the second in Tripura and the fourth on the IndiaBangladesh border. The Indian commerce ministry is footing the cost of the border haats to boost trade in local produce. Both sides are likely to ink an agreement on coastal shipping and effective use of water ways, on tackling human trafficking, besides operationalizing the historic land (enclaves) swap agreement. "Setting up Special Economic Zones in Bangla-

No t e d e c o n o m i st Sekhar Paul told IANS: "Economic cooperation between India and Bangladesh must go hand in hand with strong political support." India shares a 4,096-km border, including 1,116-km riverine one, with Bangladesh, the longest border India has with any of its neighbours. Besides West Bengal (2,216 km), the four northeastern states of Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km) together share 1,880 km of border with Bangladesh.

Nestle pulls Maggi noodles off Indian shelves

New delhi, JuNe 5 (ReuteRs): Nestle SA, battling a reputational crisis in India, pulled its Maggi instant noodles from stores across the country on Friday after regulators reported some packets contained excess lead. After coming under fire for failing to react swiftly and decisively, Nestle bowed to pressure in the early hours of Friday and announced an India-wide recall. In an effort to quell India’s most significant food scare in nearly a decade, the Swiss food giant fielded group chief executive Paul Bulcke to calm consumers at a televised press conference. Instead, he faced a rowdy gathering where he was frequently shouted down by Indian reporters. Adding to Nestle’s troubles, India’s food safety regulator issued a statement just as that meeting ended, accusing the food giant of violating labelling and oth-

tailers and the Indian army have banned Maggi noodles. On Thursday, Tamil Nadu became the first state to ban several instant noodle brands, including Nestle’s.

there is something wrong with communications. That’s why we are sitting here,” he said. Since inspectors in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh made their first report two weeks ago, at least six states, several major re-

MAGGI POINTS Maggi two-minute noodles, which sell for a dozen rupees ($0.20) per single-serving packet, are hugely popular in India. The snack is frequently served to children and eaten at roadside shacks and “Maggi points” across the country. With Bollywood superstars in its advertising campaigns, Maggi has been a market leader for three decades, though it now competes with rival brands like Hindustan Unilever Ltd’s Knorr and GlaxoSmithKline PLC’s Horlicks. Analysts and industry advisers welcomed the recall but questioned the firm’s strategy of clash-

ing with the regulator and denying the problem for weeks as headlines proliferated. “If you ask me everything that Nestle has done is wrong,” said Arvind Singhal, chairman of retail consultancy Technopak. “In this day and age of social media, you cannot question the government and consumers.” Bulcke said publicly Nestle would not challenge the Indian food testing methods, but the regulator’s report indicated Nestle had contested elements including the fact condiments were tested separately to the noodles. The regulator itself, though, when questioned on the matter by Reuters on Thursday, highlighted failings in a country where there is a chronic shortage of state laboratories for both food and drugs. Despite poor public hygiene, to date India

has not experienced food scares on the same scale as China. But analysts say increasingly affluent, health-conscious consumers and easy access to social media are likely to mean more incidents capture public attention, and global brands need to be better prepared. Employees contacted by Reuters at several multinational food companies in India reported what one described as a “state of alert”. “You have to understand multinationals are soft targets,” said one top executive. “If they checked street food, who knows how much lead and other things are to be found?” The noodle scare is India’s biggest involving packaged foods since 2006, when an environmental group raised questions over pesticide traces in Coca Cola Co and PepsiCo Inc fizzy drinks.

FB announces Lite version for slow networks French label Anna Luchini comes AirAsia to soon fly from Imphal to Guwahati New YoRk, JuNe 5 (AFP): Facebook has released a ‘Lite’ version of its application that was tailored for people using Android smartphones in places where wireless data bandwidth is scarce. “Facebook Lite is less than 1MB in size and includes Facebook’s core experiences like News Feed, status updates, photos, notifications and more,” according to Vi-

jay Shankar, Product Manager for Facebook Lite. Facebook Lite was built to use less data and work well despite potentially constrained telecommunications network conditions in developing countries, according to the Californiabased online social network. Facebook began rolling Lite out in Asia and said that the application will be available in part of Europe,

Africa, and Latin America in coming weeks. “In many areas, networks can be slow and not able to support all the functionality found in Facebook for Android,” the leading social network said in an online post. “Facebook Lite was built for these situations, giving people a reliable Facebook experience when bandwidth is at a minimum,” it added.

Maruti to bring in new green technologies to cut emissions New delhi, JuNe 5 (AgeNcies): Car market leader Maruti Suzuki is planning to bring new green technologies, which could include parent Suzuki’s mild hybrid system and downsized direct-injection turbo petrol engine to cut emissions by enhancing fuel efficiency. The company said fleet emissions of carbon dioxide had been down by over 11.6 per cent in the last five years and it would continue to work to bring it further down to promote clean air benefits. “This has been possible through fuel efficiency improvements, reduction of exhaust emissions and development of alternate fuel products during this period, the company said in a statement. Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director

and CEO, Kenichi Ayukawa said: “Going forward, we will continue our focus on investing in new technologies and strengthen our capability to bring down emissions per vehicle by enhancing fuel efficiency of our cars.” “The recent new models, product upgrades and even minor changes have been substantially more fuel efficient than the outgoing ones. With Auto Gear Shift technology the company is able to offer the convenience of an automatic without the need to emit more,” he added. “These future technologies will bring down emissions while raising vehicle performance. These technologies could find relevance in India and the company may explore these options as per customer requirements,” the company said.

BeNgAluRu, JuNe 5 (iANs): A year after it launched operations in India, AirAsia is set to fly daily from June 25 in the north-east region between Guwahati and Imphal, the low-cost carrier said on Friday. “We are offering an inaugural fare of Rs.900 on our website (airasia.com) by June 7 to fly from Guwahati to Imphal or vice-versa between June 25 and May 31, 2016,” AirAsia India chief executive Mittu Chandilya said in statement here. geNevA, JuNe 4 (Pti): India has lost a case at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) as the body on Thursday ruled that the Indian ban on import of poultry meat, eggs and live pigs from the U.S. was “inconsistent” with the international norms. India will have 12-18 months to implement this ruling, after which the U.S. can begin exports of these products to India. “The Appellate Body agreed with the panel’s finding that India’s AI (avian influenza) measures are inconsistent... because they are not based on a

risk assessment,” the WTO said. A WTO panel last year had ruled against India’s ban. After hearing New Delhi’s appeal, the appellate body said it has “found that the Panel did not, as India contended, act inconsistently.” The appellate body also upheld the panel’s findings that India’s AI measures are neither “based on”, nor “conform to,” the relevant international standard. It also endorsed the panel’s finding that India’s AI measures violated global norms on the

grounds that the prohibition was limited to just one country and not to all imports from any country with AI risk. India filed an appeal in January 2015 with the Dispute Settlement Board of the WTO. In its ruling on October 14, 2014, the WTO panel had said that India’s measures “arbitrarily and unjustifiably discriminate between Members where identical or similar conditions prevail and are applied in a manner which constitutes a disguised restriction on international trade.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Geology & Mining (G&M), Dr. Imtiwapang Aier underscored the significance of the G&M department to the growth of Nagaland economically. Dr. Aier met with G&M department officials at its Dimapur directorate on Friday; his first since taking charge of the department. Stating that the department may not be in the public limelight, Dr. Aier said that the department as a science-based agency is contributing to the growth of the State in its own way. “Without this department, we cannot plant industries for sustainable development of the state,” he said while referring to the extensive survey the department has conducted over the decades mapping the mineral resource of Nagaland. Particularly mentioning the huge reserves of coal, which is yet to be sustainably exploited, Dr. Aier underlined the importance of utilising the resource for the benefit of the State. In this regard, he said that he has proposed the idea of a coal-based thermal plant with the Chief Minister. He howev-

Maggi gate: How dangerous is MSg? Deekshita Baruah

T

he jury is still out there, but India's favourite go-to food option, our two-minute noodle friend Maggi, is in a hot soup. The Food Safety and Drug Administration's order earlier this week to Nestle to recall batches of Maggi noodles across the country, for containing dangerous levels of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and lead, was a confirmation of what we've always known. That all those Maggi memories apart, it isn't really what a dietician would ever include in a healthy diet! Reports suggest that a lead concentration of 17.2 parts per million (ppm), nearly seven times the permissible limit, was found in the noodles (the permissible limit of lead ranges between 0.01 ppm and 2.5 ppm). So how did we miss it until now? And how harmful is MSG for our health? Let's find out:

What is Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and what is the permissible limit? "Monosodium Glutamate or MSG is naturally present in various food items such as mushrooms, tomatoes, Parmesan cheese and soy sauce. It has a unique taste which is different from salty, sweet, sour or bitter. The taste is described as 'meaty' or 'savory' and termed as Umami," Delhi-based nutritionist and director of GFFI Fitness Academy, Neeraj Mehta tell us. The artificial form of MSG is derived from Glutamic Acid. Leena Saju, dietetics controller at Delhi's Artemis Hospital, adds: "Artificial MSG is produced by fermentation, a process similar to making beer or yoghurt. Carbohydrates from corn, beets or cassava are fermented to produce glutamate which is purified and crystallised. It's added to food in crystalline form which is 14% sodium. FDA considers

the addition of MSG to food to be GRAS (generally recognised as safe)." And what is the permissible limit? "The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has set a guideline for the permissible limit for MSG. 3 gm of MSG (less than a full teaspoon) is permitted for 454gm of

meat while the higher limit being 5 gm (1 teaspoon)," informs senior clinical nutritionist of Health Care at Home India, Kanika Malhotra. Is it dangerous if consumed in excess? Excess consumption of MSG promotes sluggishness in the body. It may

Bangalore Open Air 2015 brings taste of heavy metal

ndia's only dedicated open air heavy metal music festival, the Bangalore Open Air (BOA), is back in its heaviest and loudest avatar yet. Started in 2012, the festival, which aims to bring the best heavy metal artists from the world to India, will feature 32 bands over a period of seven days in Bangalore this year. The build-up to BOA 2015, which began on May 31, will end on Friday and the final leg of the event which concludes on Saturday will feature globally acclaimed heavy metal bands Napalm Death (Britain), Inquisition (US) and Belphegor (Austria) as the headliners, along with renowned Indian acts like Escher's Knot and Undying Inc among others. Inspired by Germany's Wacken Open Air festival, one of the world's biggest heavy metal festivals, BOA was created to promote heavy metal music in India, says organiser Salman U. Syed of artist management company Infinite Dreams. "Bangalore Open Air was an idea which was born in Wacken, Germany. I went there in 2010 and was surprised to see the magnitude of the

festival. I decided India needs a festival like this. I got in touch with the promoters at Wacken and requested the supporters to build a festival in India," Syed told IANS. With the event, Syed envisions a platform for international heavy metal bands to perform in India and give Indian fans the chance to witness them perform in their own country. "It's very difficult and expensive for people to travel to Europe for all these bands, so what we are doing is that we are getting these bands to India so that it's much easier for the fans," he said. In a country where Hindi film and pop music enjoys massive popularity, promoting a niche genre like heavy metal requires a concentrated effort. And BOA has been doing just that since its inception. "We are trying to build a scene here, a community for metalheads in India," Syed said. Syed, whose company Infinite Dreams curates the BOA every year, says that the subsequent editions of the festival will span across seven days, just like this year. "The whole idea of doing this is that in future people know that there is one week of metal happening in

Bangalore. It's going to be a sevenday festival from now on," he said. "We are targeting the age group of 18-30 years, college-goers and professionals. This year, we are expecting 3,000 people." Over the last decade, heavy metal has slowly but gradually developed an impressive following in India. The historic 2007 Iron Maiden concert, which saw over 30,000 headbangers from India and abroad in attendance, laid the foundation of a heavy metal movement in the country. Festivals like the BOA have only helped in nurturing the burgeoning metal movement in India. Syed also organises the Wacken Metal Battle in India, where the best metal bands from the country participate to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at the Wacken Open Air in Germany. Asked about the future of BOA, Syed says that he plans to expand the Wacken Metal Battle and take the competition to open air venues. "My whole idea is to the make the Wacken Metal Battle as the BOA. We have been doing it in clubs; so the idea is to take it out of the pubs, make it open air and have international headliners", he asserted.

n what is likely to be the only piece of positive PR that the world football governing body will receive this week, publisher Electronic Arts has announced it will be introducing female footballers into its Fifa video game series, beginning with the forthcoming Fifa 16 edition. The game features 12 international all-female teams, 11 of whom will appear at next month’s World Cup finals, including hosts Canada as well as England, Brazil, Germany and Spain. For each squad, the regular first 11 – along with select reserves – have been facially scanned using the same techniques applied to the men’s game, so photorealistic versions of world player of the year Nadine Kessler, USA alltime leading scorer Abby Wambach, and England skipper Steph Houghton are all certain to feature. Wambach also spent a day providing femalespecific motion capture at developer EA Sports’ Vancouver HQ, along with USA team-mates Sydney Leroux, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe. Fifa 16 certainly won’t be the first football sim to include female players. In 2000, UK studio Silicon Dreams included women’s football in its Mia Hamm 64 Soccer and Uefa Dream Soccer titles, though both reviewed poorly at the time. Series vice-president and general manager David Rutter claims that his team has been working to overcome the technical challenges of including women in its football sim for a considerable time. “It’s been in the pipeline for a few years, and really it was just a case of making sure that the game was in a good enough state for it the work properly,” said Rutter. “We needed to have tools and technology in place that could differentiate between men and women. Plus, we had to factor in the time and effort required for travelling around the world to scan faces and heads, record motion capture, etc. It’s been on the to-do list for a while.” Indeed, two years ago, Rutter told gaming website Kotaku that female

teams were something the studio had considered. It’s natural to wonder, then, whether the process of implementing them was expedited by last June’s backlash against Assassin’s Creed: Unity, which saw publisher Ubisoft lambasted for its negative attitude to the prospect of a female protagonist. Rutter insists that’s not the case. Rather, he claims, three years into this generation of consoles, the team finally has sufficient knowledge of PS4 and Xbox One’s development systems to retool critical elements of the match engine for female players. “The big change we’ve had to make is rebuilding the animation rig, in order that the skeleton underneath each player works with different proportions,” said Rutter. “Our underlying animation system was universally based on height and build. Rather than manipulating the proportions between joint and bone, it was like stretching an elastic band. “Now we’ve had to implement a new system that allows for the hips to be moved, the shoulders to be moved vertically, and the width of those bones and joints to be a factor too. It’s a pretty big change. The cool side effects are that we now have scalable skeletons, so we can also support different body types in the men’s side of the game.” There have been more obvious visual challenges

too. “A large number of female athletes have long hair, so we’ve had to focus on improving that element too,” said Rutter. “Again, that enables us to improve the look of male players with similar hairstyles.” The underlying gameplay engine remains identical to the men’s game, although attributes and traits are scaled to other players of the same sex. “You will get 80-rated players in the women’s teams but they’re not the same as an 80-rated player in the men’s game,” explained Rutter. “Our Cologne team [which handles all player data] has been through a ton of women’s matches over the last year or so, gathering details, information and their opinion on the players, in order to create these ratings.” For now, that means no plans this year to include male vs female matches (“As in real life, the sport itself doesn’t support that. If that changed, we definitely would”) or feature women footballers in the series’ most popular mode, Ultimate Team. The women’s teams – which also include USA, Mexico, Sweden, France, China, Australia and Italy – can be utilised in friendlies both on and offline, in addition to a bespoke offline tournament mode. The studio did discuss making an all-female Ultimate Team, as well as including the female teams from clubs such as Manchester City, but felt it too much of a stretch

Readers may please note that the contents of the articles, letters and opinions published do not reflect the outlook of this paper nor of the Editor in any form.

in this inaugural season. “We have 12 international teams,” said Rutter. “That won’t give us a population large enough to make anything close to a good Ultimate Team mode. We could have gone down the road of creating domestic leagues as well, but we probably wouldn’t have been able to stretch our resources far enough this year to provide a believable and broad crop of players.” While domestic female teams seem a natural ambition for the future, in the short term Rutter said he is looking forward to delivering his eight- and 11-yearold daughters to school in peace. “The younger one in particular is a very keen footballer, and I get a lot of stick on the playground about us not including women in the game. Finally being able to say we are will make for a refreshing change. “For girls of that age, or indeed any age, it doesn’t make sense for there not to be any women in Fifa. In the past there has always been a general acceptance that they weren’t in there. But within my household and social circle it’s always been significantly disappointing that female gamers couldn’t play Fifa with footballers of their own sex. “I’m really glad we’re doing it. We’ve got some cracking teams in there and there’ll be some amazing matches. It’s a big relief for everyone.” Fifa 16 is out on multiple formats later this year.

Not just engineers: Are IIT students finally embracing politics & activism? Mayank Jain

want to be the crowd instead of the leaders, so the only requirement is of someone who can lead these movements in campuses,” he said.

ay back in 1956, in the first convocation address of India's very first Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru called it a "fine monument of India, representing India's urges, India's future in the making". He went on to say that it seemed to him "symbolical of the changes that [were] coming to India". Almost six decades later, the IITs stand tall as institutes of national importance that have given the country thousands of engineering graduates who follow diverse career paths, ranging from the likes of novelist Chetan Bhagat to the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Over the years, the institutes have not only produced quality engineers but also successful entrepreneurs, authors, scientists and even politicians. However, lately, many IITs have been making news for reasons more closely related to political thought, activism and a clash of ideologies than engineering. What has changed? The recent controversy at IITMadras over the ban of an independent discussion forum, and the protests that followed nationwide, holds some indicators as to why students at other premier institutes felt compelled to start similar groups in their campuses as well, as a mark of solidarity. This also provides a clue about a new dimension of student activism where any restriction on their freedom of expression is intolerable. One of the major reasons for the recent upheavals at the IITs is because of increase in the attempts by the authorities to curb freedom of speech of students, according to Rahul Maganti, a mechanical engineer and one of the people behind Progressive and Democratic Students’ Collective at the IIT Bombay. The collective has played an important role of an ideological catalyst at the institution by organising lectures and talks on issues of socio economic importance as regularly as it has come out and supported liberties of people through protests ranging from the “kiss of love” to film screenings on gay rights and workers’ movements.

In the face of turmoil at the IITMadras, the students of IIT-Bombay not only went out to protest on the road but they also established their own Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle as a mark of solidarity. The time also proved opportune for students at the institution to announce a two-day summit to be held this week with activists from other IITs and discuss the future of democratic movements such as their own in campuses across India. Does this mean that the government is out to attack IITs and students are merely responding? Many disagree. “The governments of the past have been no better or worse than the current one for the freedom of speech in the country,” said a student from IIT Madras, requesting anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue on his campus. “It’s the administration that always ends up pleading allegiance to the current ruling outfit and ends up suppressing voices of dissent. It has happened before and it will happen in the future. But what helps voices such as ours is social media’s assistance in garnering support and yet staying faceless among the crowd when anonymity is warranted for academic future.” Identity crises It’s not just the power of the social media that is fuelling the activism on IIT campuses. It's also a sense of belonging and identification with those against whom the authorities seem to have been highhanded. The desire to organise and demonstrate also gets an impetus from the lead taken by other universities – in this case, Jadavpur and Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi set worthy examples to follow. A student at IIT-Delhi explained the need. “When a few students among us tried to organise our-

selves into a sexuality and gender diversity group, they faced a lot of pushback from the authorities,” he said. Another teacher speaking on condition of anonymity from the institution confirmed the incident and added that “the group has been reduced to a Facebook page.” What could be the reason for such resistance? “IITs are considered technical education institutions and not chambers of politics,” she said. “They are all scared of anything related to politics.” An ex-student from the institute, who worked as a volunteer with the Aam Aadmi Party only to get disillusioned with the outfit in a few months, feels that the academic life is not enriching enough for the students and the campus cannot be kept immune from politics. “Even though all political parties seem evil twins of each other, political ideologies still need to be articulated and debated,” he said. “Engaging with political thought or standing up for someone’s rights won’t make us politicians.” But not everyone agrees. A masters student from IIT Guwhati said that the campus remains apolitical as ever and all activism happens outside it. “There’s not enough interest for activism here,” she said. “I don’t think there are any political groups here because everyone just wants to be a great engineer.” At the same time, those inclined towards activism feel that it’s only a matter of time before other institutions become participants too. “It is empowering and certainly necessary to speak up when you are being governed by the political class,” said Rahul Maganti from IIT-Bombay. “If politics is determining our course, our stipends and our future, then we need to ask for redressal whenever required. There are many who

Trigger warning Arguing for the students' right to dissent, Hartosh Singh Bal wrote in Caravan that they are often treated as "technicians" more than anything else. "Our republic has ensured that the IITs supply a steady stream of technicians – engineers and managers – but very few who are truly creative. We must understand that even technological advances are creative acts and do not originate from those who have settled for the work of a technician," he wrote, adding that we value technicians more than creative people. "Under extreme conditions, pure mathematics may be a refuge for people denied a say in political life – as was the case in the Soviet Union, but most of them were only awaiting a chance to flee a society they had no sympathy for." While Maganti feels that it’s natural for political thought to grow and it will, many on his campus expressed the view that it’s the current government’s policies which have prompted those leaning towards the Left to take up issues and question them. “It’s never easy to express dissent," said a student from the graduating batch at IIT-B, "But the current government seems much more intolerant to critique than the previous others.” And it is not a party-political line that they want to blindly toe. “We want to critique policies objectively instead of subscribing to any political ideology and just disseminate the information of what’s happening on ground and how different it is from what’s being reported by the papers.” An ex-student from IIT Kharagpur felt that it is up to the campus to allow or suppress dissent and activism but issues often brew from inside. “People feel affected by things around them and then they want to speak up,” she said. “We can launch collective after collective to critique the government, but if nobody feels for it then there’s no point. The idea of a collective is to bring social change no matter how small scale that is in the beginning.” “We can’t cry foul all the time and resort to activism just to heckle,” she said. “As engineers, we should solve the nation’s problems instead.”

Why Technology Alone Won't Fix Schools

F

or about a month in the spring of 2013, I spent my mornings at Lakeside School, a private school in Seattle whose students are the scions of the Pacific Northwest elite. The beautiful red-brick campus looks like an Ivy League college and costs almost as much to attend. The school boasts Bill Gates among its alumni, and its students come from the families of Amazon and Microsoft executives. Unsurprisingly, there is no dearth of technology: Teachers post assignments on the school’s intranet; classes communicate by email; and every student carries a laptop (required) and a smartphone (not). In this context, what do parents do when they think their children need an extra boost? I was there as a substitute tutor for students spanning the academic spectrum. A few of them were taking honors calculus. They were diligent but wanted a sounding board as they worked on tough problems. Others, weighed down by intensive extracurricular activities, struggled in geometry and algebra. I would review material with them and offer pointers as they did assignments. Yet another group required no substantive help at all. They just needed some prodding to finish their homework on time. Despite their differences, the students had one thing in common: What their parents were paying for was extra adult supervision. All of the content I tutored is available on math websites and in free Khan Academy videos, and every student had round-the-clock Internet access. But even with all that technology, and even at a school with a luxurious 9:1 student-teacher ratio, what their parents wanted for their kids was more adult guidance. Lakeside parents are not unusual in their valuing of quality time with adults over technology. Other well-educated professionals agree. Silicon Valley executives send their children to Waldorf schools, where electronics are banned until the eighth grade. Steve Jobs once admitted that he didn’t give his children iPads: “We limit how much technology our kids use at home.” These parents aren’t anti-technology—at work, they tend to be exuberant digital evangelists—but they apparently don’t believe that more machines in and of themselves contribute to education. What is it that they know? Over the last decade, I’ve designed, studied, and taught educational technology in dif-

ferent parts of the world. In Bangalore, India, I experimented with multiple mice plugged into a single personal computer to increase student interaction. In rural Uganda, I cringed as students played a typing game with their index fingers, hunt-and-peck style. In Seattle, Washington, I wrestled with the distraction posed by technology in an after-school computer literacy class for pre-teens. Across all of those projects, a single, simple pattern held in every case. I call it technology’s “Law of Amplification”: Technology’s primary effect is to amplify human forces, so in education, technologies amplify whatever pedagogical capacity is already there. Amplification seems like an obvious idea— all it says is that technology is a tool that augments human power. But, if it’s obvious, it nevertheless has profound consequences that are routinely overlooked. For example, amplification explains why large-scale roll-outs of educational technology rarely result in positive outcomes. In any representative set of schools, some are doing well and others poorly. Introducing computers may result in benefit for some (the ones highlighted in pilot studies), but it distracts the weaker schools from their core mission. On average, the outcome is a wash. An even bigger problem is that administrators rarely allocate enough resources to adapt curricula or train teachers. Where teachers don’t know how to incorporate digital tools appropriately, there is little capacity for the technology to amplify. If a private company is failing to make a profit, no one expects that state-of-the-art data centers, better productivity software, and new laptops for all of the employees will turn things around. Yet, that is exactly the logic of so many attempts to fix education with technology. And what about computers outside of school? What happens when children are left to learn on their own with digital gadgets, as so many tech advocates insist we should do? Here technology amplifies the children’s propensities. To be sure, children have a natural desire to learn and play and grow. But they also have a natural desire to distract themselves with Angry Birds. Digital technology amplifies both of these appetites. The balance between them differs from child to child, but on the whole, distraction seems to win out when there’s no adult guidance. And this is exactly what economists Robert Fairlie and Jonathan Robinson found in

a randomized controlled trial of laptops distributed to some California students but not others: Those with laptops saw no improvement “on a host of educational outcomes, including grades, standardized test scores, credits earned, attendance, and disciplinary actions,” though they did use the laptops for social media and video games. That is, if you provide an all-purpose technology that can be used for learning and entertainment, children choose entertainment. Technology by itself doesn’t undo that inclination—it amplifies it. Meanwhile, if educational inequality is the main issue, then no amount of digital technology will turn things around. This is perhaps the least-understood corollary of technological amplification. At a talk Secretary of Education Arne Duncan gave at the South by Southwest conference, he pressed the case for more technology in education (mentioning “technology” fortythree times, and “teachers” only twenty-five). He claimed, “Technology can level the playing field instead of tilting it against low-income, minority and rural students—who may not have laptops and iPhones at home.” But this is wishful thinking; it’s misleading and misguided. Technology amplifies preexisting differences in wealth and achievement. Children with greater vocabularies get more out of Wikipedia. Students with behavioral challenges are more distracted by video games. Rich parents will pay for tutors so that their children can learn to program the devices that others merely learn to use. Technology at school may level the playing field of access, but a level field does nothing to improve the skill of the players, which is the whole point of education. Mark Warschauer, a professor at University of California, Irvine, and one of the foremost scholars in the field of educational technology finds that “the introduction of information and communication technologies in ... schools serves to amplify existing forms of inequality.” If tech-industry parents are right about their children, then what the U.S. education system needs above all isn’t more technology, but a deliberate allocation of high-quality adult supervision focused on those who need it most. The specifics are daunting and complex, but inequity in educational opportunity isn’t a problem that technology can fix. Without addressing the underlying socio-economic chasm, technology by itself doesn’t bridge the gap, it only jacks it further apart.

The Naga Blog is a forum on facebook where Nagas from Nagaland and around the world network, share ideas and discuss a wide range of topics from politics and philosophy to music and current events in Nagaland and beyond. The blog is not owned by any individual, nor is it affiliated to or associated with any political party or religion. The only movement it hopes to stir is the one raised by the voices of the Nagas every step of the way, amassing perhaps to mass consciousness one day. www.facebook. com/groups/thenagablog

Voice of the people on govt employees’ salary deduction Khrolo Kapfo: One day wage of almost all the government departments are being deducted without any pre information for Nepal's earthquake relief. Wasn’t the Indian government/State government's relief not sufficient? Should they just deduct the one day wage without the consent of the Government employees? Honestly speaking...it’s not a matter of some few hundred/thousand rupees but they should have given pre information. They should have instead made it a compulsory free will donation rather than snatching the hard earned money through the dark. Do they realize unlike them... many of the employees depend on their monthly salary and every single penny counts. Did they ever realize there are many employees whose salaries are being deducted from one or the other banks for the loans they have taken? And at last when some few hundred’s are left behind on his account to survive until his next salary comes....here comes the Government snatching away that money too..Now is the state government so poor that every government employees should be forced deducted of his one day wage? Why don’t they themselves who owns hundreds of acres of lands all over Nagaland, Dozens of SUVs, and dozens of big mansion all over Kohima and Dimapur donate some few lakhs out of their millions of rupees they have in their account. Being a government employee doesn't mean that one is so rich and that a one day wage doesn't count. Or else to make up for the one day wage deducted ....every deducted employee’s should not go to office for a day. Dear Government remember....it’s not a matter of few hundred rupees but the way you are working....and remember this too "People out here also depend upon their one day wage to survive daily" Issac Lotha: There are some departments in Nagaland that even go to the extent of deducting tithes for the departments church. All people working in this department are not members of the church but the people working in the mission and the people incharge of the Dept. collude to deduct tithes from the employees. Strange things are happening as far as money is concerned. Unfair practices as such in offices should be voiced so as to curb this KUSHI, KUSHI ATTITUDE of the BIG BOSSES. Senti Pong: If the state government had donated for Nepal quake was it really necessary to deduct again from our salary. As Imti Chang had mentioned it would have been better if it was freewill. Most parents are right now busy for their children's admissions and it’s really affecting our budget distribution... I don't know what the government is trying to convey even after they have sent relief... Huh with this money they could have repaired the beautiful roads of Nagaland. Jane Murry Yanthan: No news of teachers' salary yet. And yes.....the police department is one that deducts compulsory tithes. Mass deduction is not justified in any manner. I'm not against contribution to the church or God's ministry, but against the system. Hope the concerned deptt(s) do something about this issue. Jonah Achumi Naga: Our countless unions, associations, forums and higher-ups are always very eager and enthusiastic to collect these collections for whatever purpose they maybe.

The Naga Marriage Protocol Atsung Imchen: Marriage- where two people come together to spend the rest of their lives together in sickness or in health, till death do them part. What do you see when you attend any typical Naga Wedding? Normally it is lavish, glamorous, a brigade of vehicles, fashion, a huge crowd of attendees and expensive; in the end what is left are debt ridden parents. Behind all that glamour lays two families that are either in a condition to bear the expenses or must have taken alternative measures to cope with the expenses. Many will be able to bear the expenses, many won’t be. This trend of a lavish, expensive wedding is killing the real meaning of a wedding and gives pressure to the next group to do the same, to cope with the standard we Nagas have laid down ourselves, they have to somehow manage even if they are not in the position to do so. It’s really a sight of pity if we really see the problem parents normally go through after their sons or daughters marriage. It’s true, almost all the parents would want to give their children the best wedding they can have, but if the wedding is the reason for their problems, the reason why they are crippled with debts, is it worth it? You must be aware of such families who had taken those alternate measures, alternate measures as in selling of lands, houses anything that could relief them of the debt they would have incurred for a onetime event. There is no need to follow this so called wedding standard we’ve set for ourselves, those who can do it, that’s their choice, at the same time those who can do it can also lead by example, be the trend setter and return back the true meaning of Marriage. There is no need to feel, think or say “ah! That was a small wedding”. As long as you are surrounded by people who genuinely want to be a part of your onetime life event no matter the size, why should you worry about all that is missing? Because if we are to be true it’s not the number of people that attends the wedding it’s the number of people who actually cares about you or who have been part of your life from day one that matters. It’s not the glamour or the kings feast that matters but the dedication of those people whom you invited to come and witness the once in a lifetime occasion and be a part of it, it’s not the amount of money you've spent but the amount of joy you accumulate for yourself all well as for those who came and how meaningful it was. Lastly financially crippling your parents over your wedding expenses is really not a blessing if you think the wedding would be a blessing. Let the wedding be a true celebration of two people coming together and not a celebration of glamour, feast or who spends the most, Let it be a blessing not a curse in disguise, let us celebrate the Real Wedding. Issac Lotha: Our Naga wedding is rather funny. Follow our customary practices and go to church for the Christian ritual for pronouncement of husband and wife. It's high time we follow only one practice. Customary or the Christian way. We sure have our feet in two boats as far as marriage is concerned. Botoli Zhimomi: On point! And why should the parents pick up the cost of wedding expenses? If the couple does not have the money to pay for their own wedding cost; don't get married. Simple as that. Kevito Peter Zhimomi: Usually Billionaires & Millionaires make Wedding an intimate private party/celebration. But, we Nagas are Trillionaires so we make it a Festival out of it. Debts or Loans provided we are able to show off. Consequences are arguments & fights after Honeymoon. Lol Hope this Post change many mindsets regarding Weddings. Also, getting a wedding card is like means you have to give Rs 500 or Rs 1000. In a year we get 15-25 such cards. 13 out of world's top 20 polluted cities in India

A young ragpicker floats on an inflated tube as he searches for recycled materials in the polluted waters of River Kuakhai on World Environment Day on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, India, Friday, June 5, 2015. Of the world’s top 20 polluted cities, 13 are reported to be in India. (AP Photo)

New Delhi, JuNe 5 (hT): India may be lagging behind China on several economic indicators but when it comes to environmental degradation, the country has definitely outsmarted its giant neighbour. Of the world’s top 20 polluted cities, 13 are in India compared to just three in China. Air pollution slashes life expectancy by 3.2 years for the 660 million Indians who live in cities, including Delhi. In China, the corresponding dip is marginally lower at three years. The Ganga and Yamuna are ranked among the world’s 10

most polluted rivers. China has just one. An evaluation in February ranked Vapi in Gujarat and Sukinda in Odisha among the 10 most environmentally-degraded zones in the world. China had no entries on the list. The two nations have seen furious economic growth in the past decade fuelling a rapid rise in pollution. China leads the world in carbon emissions and India is in third position. But one important difference between the two emerging economies lies in China’s ability to manage the impact of breakneck economic growth on its environ-

ment much better than India. The effect of China’s success is most visible in its air and water, both of which have a direct bearing on public health. Both countries were saddled with almost identical environmental concerns a decade ago, but China cleaned many of its polluted rivers and managed to check the spiralling urban air pollution through stringent rules. The results are showing. “Beijing's air pollution has dipped 40% since 2000 as we have taken steps to phase out polluting vehicles and put checks on building heating sys-

tems,” said Beijing municipal officer Li Kunsheng at an event in Delhi earlier this year. In contrast, Delhi’s air pollution has steadily climbed by 20% in the same period with successive governments reluctant to act. The story is the same in cities across the country. Coimbatore is the only exception as the air there was found to be fit for breathing. The impact of rising toxins in the air is clearly visible on an average Indian's life, as proved by a Lancet study in 2012 that ranked air pollution as the sixth biggest killer with an annual estimated toll of 66 million. A 2015 report by the Centre for Science and Environment, a Delhi-based NGO, says the decline in the country's overall environmental standards was because of river pollution, which is worse now than it was three decades ago, piling garbage in cities and increasingly toxic urban air. "In India, environment degradation is a runaway problem impinging on public health an exacerbating poverty," says Sunita Narain, the NGO's director general. “We need to act and act fast ... otherwise the health cost would be enormous,” she added. A three-year analysis of the water quality in 290 rivers by the Central Pollution Control Board said about 66% of the stretches monitored had high organic pollution. It means 8,400 km of these rivers are badly polluted and not fit for supporting aquatic

life. "Increasing flow of untreated waste water from cities into these rivers is the reason for our rivers getting polluted," says Shashi Shekhar, CPCB chairman and special secretary in the environment ministry. But not all news is bad with innovative green initiatives sprouting all over the country. The bicycling clubs in Bengaluru act as one of the biggest networks of bikers in the country, a group of people have generated organic fertilizer from waste in Kolkata and Bungroo and a programme of the Gujarat Ecological Commission has turned wasteland into a good agri-production zone. And then, there are a new band of young environment activists such as Ritwick Dutta who took authorities to court for violating environmental laws and protect people's right to a clean environment. As a result, the National Green Tribunal has compensated locals for pollution and one such case is in Tamil Nadu. Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar is also hopeful of people's participation pushing governments to improve the environment, saying a policy of "development without destruction" is in place. In the coming years, his ministry plans to introduce a new environmental regime that will focus on "self-regulation" and strengthen the "polluter-pay principle" with higher penalties for violation of environmental laws.

Kejriwal attacks Modi, 'PM’s Bangladesh visit to consolidate cooperation' of illegal migrants and trafficking. says he is no Rahul Gandhi Both sides are likely to sign a

New Delhi, JuNe 5 (iaNS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday described Narendra Modi as "not a good prime minister", and said he cannot be compared with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi. Kejriwal told NDTV in an interview that Modi was using Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung to create obstacles for his Aam Aadmi Party government to avenge the BJP's rout in the February elections in Delhi. "He (Modi) is taking revenge against the people and the Aam Aadmi Party because of the loss (in Delhi)... He cannot be a good prime minister," Kejriwal said. Admitting that people had voted for Modi nationally and for the AAP in Delhi, Kejriwal said: "He (Modi) should run the country and let us run Delhi." The AAP leader, who led his party to a sweeping win, accused Jung of behaving like a "polling agent" of the Bharatiya Janata Party. "The Lt. Governor's house has become the second headquarters of the BJP." Jung and Kejriwal's government have been locked in a bitter row over administrative issues in the Delhi administration, with the Lt. Governor asserting his authority in select areas. The chief minister said Jung does not respond to telephone calls of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. "Manish calls him, many times, but his phone is never answered. If the watchman of (BJP president) Amit Shah calls him, he will go crawling," the chief minister said, using unusually strong words. Suggesting that he was a mass leader, Kejriwal said the BJP leadership must realize that he was not a Rahul Gandhi. "Narendra Modi ji must realise that I am not Rahul Gandhi," he said. Asked what he meant by that, Kejriwal smiled and said after a pause: "The message I wanted to convey has been conveyed." The chief minister also made light of reports that the central government could stop the salaries of Delhi government officials. "Let them do it if they can," he said, adding the AAP government was not beholden to the central home ministry, to which the Lt. Governor reports.

New Delhi, JuNe 5 (PTi): Describing Bangladesh as an “exceptional neighbour”, India on Friday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “historic” visit there from Saturday will help the two countries to consolidate and deepen cooperation in key areas of power, energy and connectivity. Briefing reporters on Modi’s visit to Dhaka, Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar said the two sides will exchange the instruments of ratification on the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA), recently passed by Parliament to settle the 41-year-old border dispute. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be present at the exchange ceremony. Apart from holding talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister will also

Violence in Jammu despite curfew, FIR filed against policeman Jammu, JuNe 5 (iaNS): Protests were reported from various places in Jammu on Friday despite indefinite curfew imposed in parts of the city following violence over Sikh militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale's posters in which a youth was killed. Meanwhile, police lodged an FIR against the Senior Superintendent of Police's (SSP) security guard for firing at Sikh protesters. Protests broke out at a number of places as Sikh protesters defied preventive restrictions imposed by administration, and pressed for their demand for arrest and punishment of those responsible for Thursday's firing incident. A mob stopped the vehicle taking killed youth Jagjit Singh's body, after it was handed over to his family for last rites, in the Gadigarh (Satwari) area and burnt the police vehicle accompanying it and well as half a dozen other vehicles. The protesters were squatting there with the body, a police official said. Earlier, dozens of angry Sikh protesters smashed vehicles and roadside eateries outside the Jammu railway station forcing closure of markets in the area as well in Gol Market area of Gandhi Nagar. Protests also erupted in Digiana and Ta-

lab Tillo area where authorities had deployed riot police and paramilitary in full strength. Indefinite curfew continued in areas of Satwari and Mirian Sahib where the army, assisting the civil administration, patrolled the roads. Curfew was imposed Thursday evening following the violence. Director General of Police K. Rajendra Kumar, who flew here from Srinagar, chaired a high-level security meeting. Authorities also ordered the suspension of internet services to check the spread of rumours. Jammu District Magistrate Simranjeet Singh on Friday ordered service providers to suspend internet, both on landline and mobile networks. He also imposed prohibitory orders banning the assembly of five or more people all over Jammu. Educational institutions in Jammu, and the neighbouring districts of Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch remained closed on Friday. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti condoled the youth's death and appealed for peace in Jammu.

meet prominent political leaders including Leader of the Opposition Raushon Ershad and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during his two-day visit, he said. “Prime Minister’s visit is very historic and the reason is the centrepiece — the conclusion of the LBA with Bangladesh, longest land boundary. This is the achievement with which the Prime Minister will go to Bangladesh and we will have the instruments of ratification exchanged. It is really not ordinarily achieved,” the Foreign Secretary said. He said the passage of LBA with Bangladesh by Parliament has generated lot of goodwill and confidence and will help better management of the 4096-km-long border, most of which was porous, and help tackling issues

number of deals including on enhancing connectivity to ensure greater people-to-people contact apart from flagging off the bus service between Kolkata and Agartala. A pact to supply diesel to Bangladesh has also been finalised and would be inked. Talking about the BangladeshBhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) Motor Vehicle Agreement, a sub-regional connectivity pact, Jaishankar said it is expected to be signed in “few weeks”. Asked if increasing intolerance in Bangladesh will be discussed during Modi’s meetings, he said, “Bangladesh is an exceptional neighbour. It is in many ways symbol of society where democratic roots have taken hold under very difficult conditions. While Teesta water sharing pact will not be inked during Modi’s visit, the issue of sharing of other river waters and waterways was expected to figure. The two countries are keen to strengthen railway connectivity, particularly to revive railway links which were in existence prior to 1965. The two countries are set to sign a coastal shipping agreement to facilitate sailing of small vessels from India to various ports in Bangladesh which now go through Singapore. On the trade front, there will be efforts to spur Indian investment in Bangladesh and an enabling MoU may be signed to facilitate setting up of special economic zones by Indian companies in that country. The current volume of bilateral trade is around $6.5 billion out of which India’s export is around $6 billion. Ph. No.

Geelani declares he is Indian for passport, calls it compulsion

SRiNaGaR, JuNe 5 (PTi): Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday appeared before passport authorities and declared himself as an Indian while completing formalities for travel documents but insisted that he did it out of "compulsion". "Geelani submitted his biometric data - finger prints and iris scan - at the designated counter," an official of the Regional Passport Office here said. The 88-year-old hardline Hurriyat leader, who wants to visit his ailing daughter in Saudi Arabia, reached the Passport Seva Kendra here at the scheduled time of his appointment at 10.15am. He mentioned 'Indian' in the nationality column, the official said. Talking to reporters outside the passport office, Geelani said, "I am not by birth Indian. It is a compulsion". A Hurriyat spokesman justified Geelani writing Indian in the nationality column saying "travelling on the Indian passport is a compulsion of every

Kashmiri". "Geelani too is compelled to complete the formalities in this regard," he added. The issue of granting Geelani passport had sparked a political debate with ruling BJP opposing it saying that he should declare his nationality as Indian and apologise for his anti-national activities. However, its ally PDP had favoured it while former chief minister Omar Abdullah had said it was not an issue as Geelani had been given passport in the past too. The Home and External Affairs ministries had a fortnight back said that Geelani's passport application was incomplete and could not be processed. The Centre had said it will examine Geelani's application on merit once he completes all formalities. "An incomplete passport application was received from him (Geelani). Fees were not paid and the biometric details and photographs not submitted," Spokesperson in MEA Vikas Swarup had said.

Cyber attack hits millions of US federal workers WASHINGTON, JUNE 5 (REUTERS): Hackers broke into U.S. government computers, possibly compromising the personal data of 4 million current and former federal employees, and investigators were probing whether the culprits were based in China, U.S. officials said on Thursday. Cyber investigators linked the breach to earlier thefts of healthcare records from Anthem Inc, the second largest U.S. health insurer, and Premera Blue Cross, a healthcare services provider. In the latest in a string of intrusions into U.S. agencies’ high-tech systems, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) suffered what appeared to be one of the largest breaches of information ever on government workers. The office handles employee records and security clearances. A U.S. law enforcement source told Reuters a “foreign entity or government” was believed to be behind the cyber attack. Authorities were looking into a possible Chinese connection, a source close to the matter said. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said such accusations had been frequent of late and were irresponsible. Hacking attacks were often cross-border and hard to trace, he said. The FBI said it was investigating and aimed to bring to account those responsible. Several U.S. states were

already investigating a cyber attack on Anthem in February that a person familiar with the matter said is being examined for possible ties to China. John Hultquist of Dallas-based iSight Partners told Reuters that the latest attack on OPM and the earlier breaches at Anthem and Premera Blue Cross appear to have been the work of cyber espionage hackers working on behalf of a state, not those focused on cybercrime. He said they may have widened their net to gather personally identifiable information for more elaborate, finely-tuned attacks in the future. “This is usually done by criminals, but based on their behavior, we believe these are espionage actors,” said Hultquist.

MALICIOUS ACTIVITY OPM detected new malicious activity affecting its information systems in April and the Department of Homeland Security said it concluded at the beginning of May that the agency’s data had been compromised and about 4 million workers may have been affected. The agencies involved did not specify exactly what kind of information was accessed. The breach hit OPM’s IT systems and its data stored at the Department of the Interior’s data center, a shared service center for federal agencies, a DHS official said on condition of anonymity. The official

would not comment on whether other agencies’ data had been affected. OPM had previously been the victim of another cyber attack, as have various federal government computer systems at the State Department, the U.S. Postal Service and the White House. Chinese hackers were blamed for penetrating OPM’s computer networks last year, and hackers appeared to have targeted files on tens of thousands of employees who had applied for top-secret security clearances, the New York Times reported last July, citing unnamed U.S. officials. “The FBI is working with our inter-agency partners to investigate this matter,” the bureau said in a statement. “We take all potential threats to public and private sector systems seriously, and will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace.” The U.S. government has long raised concerns about cyber spying and theft emanating from China and has urged Beijing to do more to curb the problem. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular daily news briefing in Beijing that China hoped the United States would have more trust and cooperate more. “Without first thoroughly investigating, always saying that ‘it’s possible’, this is irresponsible and unscientific,” said Hong.

e's one of Britain's biggest acting exports of the moment following his Oscar-winning portrayal of Stephen Hawking. So it's no wonder the big brands are snapping up Eddie Redmayne to appear in their ads. The actor, 33, was the guest of honour at a lavish dinner laid on by Omega to celebrate him becoming the company's latest ambassador at Quaglinos in Mayfair, London on Thursday. The dapper former model looked every inch the Hollywood leading man in a taupe blazer, blue tie and navy trousers. Although he tried to keenly show off his timepiece on the red carpet, he only had eyes for his new wife, PR Hannah Bagshawe, who he wed in December. The couple loved loved-up as they worked the room togeth-

Eddie had a busy night on his hands juggling staying by Hannah's side and chatting to many of the company's hotshots and star guests who had been invited. The former Eton student chatted with 12 Years A Slave actor Chiwetel Ejiofor at the bash, as well as ex-Downton Abbey lead Dan Stevens. Talking about joining George Clooney as an ambassador for the high-end brand, Eddie said: 'I have worn Omega for a number of years, so to be made an official ambassador for the brand on a global level is very exciting. There was no comment from the White House. Since the intrusion, OPM said it had implemented additional security precautions for its networks. It said it would notify the 4 million employees and offer credit monitoring and identity theft services to those affected. RASH OF ATTACKS “The last few months have seen a series of massive data breaches that have affected millions of Americans,” U.S. Representative Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said in a statement. Tens of millions of records may have been lost in the attacks on Anthem and Premera Blue Cross. iSight’s Hultquist said similar methods, servers

U.S. officials also pointed the finger directly at North Korea for a highprofile attack on Sony over a film spoof depicting the assassination of North Korea’s leader. China has routinely denied accusations by U.S. investigators that hackers backed by the Chinese government have been behind attacks on U.S. companies and federal agencies. U.S. military officials have become increasingly vocal about cyber espionage and attacks launched by China, Russia and other rivals. A Pentagon report in April said hackers associated with the Chinese government repeatedly targeted U.S. military networks last year seeking intelligence.

Afghan Taliban say informal talks took place in Norway KABUL, JUNE 5 (AP): Taliban representatives have been meeting this week with female Afghan lawmakers and peace negotiators in the Norwegian capital Oslo, a Taliban spokesman and the Afghan president’s office said on Friday. In an email statement, the Taliban’s Zabihullah Mujahid said the discussions were informal and could not be categorized as “peace talks.” An Afghan official told The Associated Press that talks took place on June 3 and 4 as part of a long-term Afghan peace initiative by the Norwegian government. Norway’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Frode Andersen said the meetings would conclude on Friday. At least five female parliamentarians, including prominent women’s rights advocates Fawzia Koofi and Shukria Barakzai, had taken part, attending as “independent representatives” from parliament, the Afghan official said. “They are not part of any (Afghan) government initiative, and were invited to an unofficial meeting, not as official delegates,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. Female members of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council, a government body charged with negotiating an end to the war with the Taliban, had also attended in an unofficial capacity, the official said. The office of President Ashraf Ghani issued a statement saying all Afghan citizens had the right to “work for peace where and whenever they want.” “We appreciate these are non-government talks, they are not representing the government of Afghanistan,” the statement said. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry confirmed the discussions had taken place between “Afghans of different political backgrounds ... expressing their personal views.” The meeting is the third face-to-face contact between Taliban and Afghan officials in recent months, though both sides have stressed their informality. Ghani has prioritized bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table and ending their insurgency. He has promised transparency in all dealings with the insurgents, who have been fighting Kabul for 14 years — since being ousted from power by a U.S.-led invasion in December 2001. The Afghan official said the Taliban’s representatives to the talks were Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, a former senior official of the Taliban regime that controlled Afghanistan until December 2001, and Mohammad Zahid Ahmadzada, who was a junior diplomat in that regime.

ne Direction will "go on a break" next year. The band - made up of Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne - is reportedly set to go on hiatus when the group have finished promoting and touring for their upcoming fifth studio album in 2016. It is said each of the boys wants some time to "step back and consider what they want to do next" after Louis, 23, was reportedly offered a spot on this year's 'The X Factor' judging panel next to their record label boss Simon Cowell and Harry, 21, is thought to be considering a solo career. A source said: "The band are to go on a break after promoting the fifth album next year, possibly with a number of live tour dates around the world. "Simon Cowell is supportive of what they need to do because he wants the band to stay together in some form for a very long time. "They have been working non-stop for five years, sold millions of albums and become some of the biggest celebrities in the world. At some point they have to take time off to step back and consider what they want to do next. "What's almost certain is there will be no 1D music next year." It is reported

Louis, Liam, 21, and Niall, 21, are all keen to reunite following their time off but doubts about the future of the boyfriend lie with Harry, who was recently said to have been offered the chance to star in a Hollywood blockbuster by legendary film producer, Harvey Weinstein. An insider told The Sun newspaper: "The reality is that once a boyband takes a break, it's often the beginning of the end. They're adults now and have their own interests. "Niall, Louis and Liam would want to get back together after the break but the big question mark is over Harry, who has lots of options." However, Harry recently insisted he has no plans to follow in former member Zayn Malik's footsteps after he quit the group in March this year and has urged his bandmates to stay "focused". He said: "We have the album and the tour that we're working on right now. And I think, when you have so many goals that you feel you have yet to achieve, it's kind of hard to see past those. "I think it's important to focus on what's going on and don't lose track. We're all working toward the same thing right now, and I don't think we're thinking much past that."

outed as the most stylish film of this year, Dil Dhadakne Do starring Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anil Kapoor, Shefali, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar and Rahul Bose has released today. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, this eccentric family drama had created good buzz courtesy its promising trailer and of course the stellar star cast. While the film has garnered mixed reviews from the critics, DDD has opened well at the multiplexes in most metros. But Priyanka and Ranveer starrer hasn’t fared that well in the single screens theatres. However, I am sure the film will pick up in the evening shows and also over

the weekend as there is no other big release this week. Trade portal Boxofficeindia reported, “Dil Dhadakne Do had a decent start of around 25-30% at multiplexes with the premium ones being better. The single screens as expected were not good at 15-20%. The film was released on around 2300 screens. The film will grow in the evenings as it caters to that audience.”The website further stated, “The opening day numbers will come out good in the major metros and a few other cities where there are a number of premium multiplexes but the crunch will come on Saturday as a lot will depend on how they grow.

Kashyap shocks world No.1 Chen Long to enter Indonesia Open semis

JAKARTA, JUNE 5 (PTI): On a bitter-sweet day for India, Parupalli Kashyap rallied to shock World No. 1 Chen Long to enter the men's singles semifinals even as Saina Nehwal bowed out with a quarterfinal loss to familiar foe Shixian Wang in the Indonesia Open Super Series badminton tournament on Friday. Kashyap, ranked 12th in the world, came from behind to beat the top seed Chinese 14-21, 2117, 21-14 in a contest that lasted an hour and three minutes. He will take on third-seeded Dane Jan O Jorgensen. "Big win today ! Thru to semis now. Keep supporting," Kahsyap tweeted. However, Saina, who has won this tournament thrice in her career, went down 21-16, 12-21, 18-21 to old foe Wang Shixian of China in a 69-minute battle. This was the 13th face-off between the two and Wang has a 7-6 overall lead now. Kashyap was the first to take the court on Friday and refused to be intimidated by the prospect of facing upto the world number one. The Commonwealth gold-medallist Indian was consistent with his smashes and impeccable with his net play against his more fancied opponent. Coming into this match, Long had a 7-1 head-to-head record against Kashyap. The numero uno shuttler over the last two years has emerged as China's successor to the incomparable Lin Dan. Incidentally, Kashyap's last victory against Long came in this very tournament in 2012. In what was a classic David vs Goliath battle, Kashyap used all his resources to overcome his rival. One of the fastest movers and hardest hitters in the world, Long failed to counter Kashyap's odd, precise smashes and start-

ed committing unforced errors. In the opening game, Kashyap was hardly a match to Long, who not only opened up a 6-2 lead but consistently moved ahead. Kashyap caught up with him on a couple of occasions but once the Chinese broke away from a tied 11-11 position to 1611, there was no looking back for him. Long comfortably sealed the first game 21-14. The second game went neck-and-neck till 7-7 before the Indian managed to take a slight lead and hold on to the advantage, always keeping his nose ahead. Even though the experienced Chinese kept breathing down his neck, Kashyap wriggled out of some tricky situations to take the game to the decider. In the third game, Kashyap broke away from tied 2-2 to take a 9-3 lead, even as Long committed too many unforced errors, hitting wide and long to

hand over a massive 14-5 lead to the Indian. In the end, it was a cakewalk for Kashyap, who made full use of his chances to sail through. Saina snatched the momentum quite early as she raced to a 11-5 lead and built on it quite aggressively to clinch the opening game in 30 minutes. But the experienced Wang roared back in the second game to draw level and make the battle interesting. Saina had the initial edge in the decider, grabbing a 6-3 lead but Wang did not allow her to run away with it by making it 6-6. A see-saw battle followed and the two players were locked 8-8 before Saina nosed ahead with a 15-10 lead. However, Wang fought back yet again to draw level at 15-15 and 17-17. The Chinese star took the lead from there on and held her nerves to outwit the Indian, who has triumphed here in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

OAKLAND, JUNE 5 (AP): Golden State overcame a big performance by LeBron James to beat Cleveland 108-100 in overtime on Thursday to take the opening game of the NBA Finals. In the NBA decider for the first time in 40 years, the Warriors rallied from an early 14-point deficit, absorbed a Finals personalbest 44 points from James and shut down Cleveland in the extra session, when league MVP Stephen Curry stood tall for the Warriors. "It was just a classic five minutes that we needed to get that win," Curry said of the overtime. James shot 18 of 38 from the field and had eight rebounds and six assists in 46 minutes. But the four-time MVP missed a long jumper in the dying seconds of regulation time which likely would have won it, and Cleveland missed its first eight shots of overtime. Adding to the Cavs' frustration, point guard Kyrie Irving limped to the locker room after aggravating his troublesome left leg in overtime. He did not return. With Kevin Love already out, the Cavs can ill afford to lose Irving for Game 2 on Sunday in Oakland. "You can see in the tone of my voice I'm a little worried," said Irving,

who buried his head in his hands at his locker and left on crutches. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he hopes Irving is able to play the remainder of the series. "I mean that," Kerr said. "You probably don't believe me, but I mean that." There were 13 lead changes and 11 ties in a game tightly contested across the board. There was little edge in shooting (Warriors 44.3 percent, Cavaliers 41.5 percent), rebounding (Warriors 48, Cavaliers 45) or assists (Warriors 24, Cavaliers 19). In the end, it came down to the NBA's top teams and biggest stars making plays — or not. James and newly crowned MVP Curry (26 points and eight assists) carried their clubs through the fourth quarter, trading scores and assists in a back-and-forth duel. Both stars also had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds of regulation. With the scores tied, Curry beat Irving off the dribble and moved in for the layup. Instead, Irving blocked the shot from behind, J.R. Smith came up with the rebound and the Cavs called a timeout with 24.1 seconds left. James dribbled down the clock and missed his

jump shot from just inside the left arc. Iman Shumpert just got off a desperation shot which nearly rimmed in at the buzzer. The Cavs never came so close again, due to a series of misfires in overtime. "I got to where I wanted to get, step back, made them before," James said. "It's a make or miss league, and we had our chances." James hit a game-winning

Barcelona, Juventus set sights on treble

MADRID, JUNE 5 (IANS): Spanish side FC Barcelona will be at full strength when they look to defeat Italian champions Juventus to win their fifth Champions League trophy in the final at Berlin. Saturday's game in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin promises to be a clash of the football Titans as the Spanish and Italian League and Cup double winners go head to head, reports Xinhua. There is no doubt that a Barcelona side led by the free-scoring trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar are the favourites, but nobody should forget that Juventus knocked Barcelona's eternal rivals Real Madrid out in the semi-finals. That has denied us the intriguing prospect of a Barcelona-Madrid final, but with former Real Ma-

drid striker Alvaro Morata looking to give fans of his former club something to smile about, Barcelona would be well advised to take nothing for granted. Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who will partner Javier Mascherano at the back, warned that Juventus have quietly made their way to the final, where nobody expected them to and said that the attacking threat posed by Morata and Carlos Tevez could not be ignored. Juventus will be without central defender Georgio Chiellini after he suffered a muscle injury that will deny fans the chance to see him face-off against Suarez after an ugly biting incident involving the two at the 2014 World Cup led to the Barcelona forward getting a fourmonth ban.

Barcelona meanwhile have no injury doubts and are looking for a repeat of the treble they won in 2009 under former coach Pep Guardiola. Indeed, current Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has said that the chance of a treble is what drives his side on and that ambition, rather than the Champions League alone which is their target. With defenders Jordi Alba and Dani Alves and midfielders Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta, Barcelona will look to dominate the ball, attack and pressure their rivals into mistakes. Barcelona will look to win and dedicate the trophy to departing veteran midfielder Xavi Hernandez. But Enrique has warned his team not to take things for granted.

"I kind of knew that play he wanted to get into, just going left, step back, and I was right there on him," Iguodala said. Curry drew two fouls at the start of overtime and made all four free throws, and Harrison Barnes hit a corner 3 just in

front of the Cavs bench to give Golden State a 105-98 lead with 2:02 to play. Irving limped to the bench trying to shake off his troublesome left leg after the play. The Warriors went ahead 108-98 on free throws with 1:16 to play, effectively ending the contest. James' uncontested layup with 8.9 seconds left accounted for Cleveland's only points in overtime.

Argentina out and NZ through to playoffs at U20 World Cup

WELLINGTON, JUNE 5 (AP): Pre-tournament favorite Argentina was eliminated in the group stage at the Under-20 World Cup for the first time in 24 years after drawing 0-0 with Austria on Friday. The Argentines were knocked out by host New Zealand's 5-1 defeat of Myanmar. New Zealand advanced as one of the four best third-placed teams in group play. Meanwhile, Austria advanced for only the second time, along with Ghana and Ukraine. Argentina took only two points from three matches in Group B after a loss against Ghana and draws against Panama and Austria, and needed to win and New Zealand not to win. Argentina, the champion six times, pressed Aus-

tria relentlessly, securing 71 percent of possession and creating 27 shots on goal, but despite its energetic attempts, it couldn't break down the disciplined and well-ordered Austria defense. Playmaker Angel Correa was a constant threat but even his outstanding range of skills couldn't crack the Austrians. New Zealand posted its first win at a FIFA tournament, after conceding an early goal to Myanmar. The Kiwis equalized with their first goal at a FIFA under-20 tournament, by Noah Billingsley in the 40th. Ghana reached the round of 16 with a 1-0 win over Panama, scoring the match-winning goal in the 82nd minute through Emmanuel Boateng.

any of us might not be aware of about a widely discussed and contentious environmental issue of the present day the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. We know that the Pacific Ocean is the largest of ocean among the world’s oceans, covering about 165.25 million square km of area (about 46% of the Earth's total water surface and about one-third of world’s land area). Of late, it is observed that as much as five large regions in this ocean have accumulated a large concentration of marine debris particularly low density plastic debris (5.1 g/m2), e.g., littering, illegal dumping etc, the total area of which could be twice the size of present USA. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States describe this phenomenon as “Pacific trash vortex” which we refer to it as the Great Pacific garbage patch. It is also revealed that an estimated 80% of this garbage comes from land-based sources while the rest 20% from cargo ships. The effect of this debris on wildlife and humans is enormous. Some of these long-lasting plastics end up in the stomachs of marine birds and animals and their young, including sea turtles and the Blackfooted Albatross. Midway Atoll receives substantial amounts of marine debris from the patch. Of the 1.5 million Laysan Albatrosses that inhabit Midway, nearly all are found to have plastic in their digestive system. Approximately onethird of their chicks die and many

of those deaths are due to being fed plastic from their parents. Twenty tons of plastic debris washes up on Midway every year with five tons of that debris being fed to Albatross chicks. Besides the particles' danger to wildlife, on the microscopic level the floating debris can absorb organic pollutants from seawater, including PCBs, DDT, and PAHs. Aside from toxic effects, when ingested, some of these are mistaken by the endocrine system as estradiol, causing hormone disruption in the affected animal. These toxin-containing plastic pieces are also eaten by jellyfish, which are then eaten by larger fish. Many of these fish are then consumed by humans, resulting in their ingestion of toxic chemicals. Marine plastics also facilitate the spread of invasive species that attach to floating plastic in one region and drift long distances to colonize other ecosystems. On the macroscopic level, the physical size of the plastic kills fish, birds and turtles as the animals' digestion cannot break down the plastic that is taking up space inside their stomachs. A second effect of the macroscopic plastic is to make it much more difficult for animals to detect their normal sources of food. While eating their normal source of food plastic ingestion can be unavoidable. It is estimated that this plastic marine debris affects at least 267 species worldwide and a few of the 267 species reside in the North Pacific Gyre.

The United Nations General Assembly realizing the imminent plight of the oceans and the marine ecosystems they contain has formally designated World Oceans Day in 2008 to be organized on 8th of June as an annual event and has, through its umbrella organisation UNESCO, been spreading a wider message/ awareness among the member countries to stop further polluting our Oceans. In its foreword, it writes: “The Ocean is the heart of our planet. Like your heart pumping blood to every part of your body, the ocean connects people across the Earth, no matter where we live. The ocean regulates the climate, feeds millions of people every year, produces oxygen, is the home to an incredible array of wildlife, provides us with important medicines, and so much more! In order to ensure the health and safety of our communities and future generations, it’s imperative that we take the responsibility to care for the ocean as it cares for us”. This year, the theme is “Healthy oceans, healthy planet” and let us take every possible effort to stop plastic pollution as it is a serious threat owing to the fact that it degrades very slowly, pollutes waterways for a very long time. Besides, it impacts the health of aquatic animals as animals including zooplankton mistaken the microbeads as their food. his article is not written for every Indian soldier who has died in Nagaland from 1955 to the present. I cannot write such an article because out of those thousands who have died in our lands; many were guilty of war crimes against our people. Many under the protective umbrella of the Assam Maintenance of Public Order Act 1953, The Assam Disturbed Area Act 1955 and the hated Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 etc, raped tortured and murdered many of our people. Many of them had also burned most of our Naga villages to ashes in the 1950’s. Many also most cruelly assisted their government in imprisoning almost the whole Naga population in 1957 through the groupings. For such guilty persons, rather than mourning their deaths, I would even appeal to the International court of Justice to dispense justice on those who are still alive. Yes, I condemn every Indian Officer of any rank who knew that Nagaland was never a part of India and that Nagas were never Indians by race culture or history; yet still assisted the Indian Government in invading Nagaland and occupying it for all these years under its puppet state of Nagaland. But on the other hand, how can I not mourn the deaths of all those hundreds (If not thousands) of Indian soldiers who did not know history or geography or politics and came and died in the six decades killing fields of Nagaland. How can I also not mourn even those who are now dying in our midst even as we nonchalantly go about our daily chores of life? Are their deaths something we should ignore as inconsequential and none of our business? When their parents, wives and children would be mourning their deaths, are we to go about life’s pursuits as if nothing is happening? As for me, from the depths of my heart, I mourn them. Like me, they were also ordinary

human beings. Like me, they also have families who were dear to them and for whom they also wanted to live. I mourn their deaths with all their kith and kin. I mourn their deaths more so, because their precious lives have been sacrificed on the altar of the Indian politician’s lie that Nagas are Indians and Nagaland is Indian territory. Many of these slain soldiers of India-especially the ones in the 1950’s and 1960’s- most probably did not have sufficient education to make their own independent decisions from their knowledge of history, geography and politics. They most probably came, tutored by their political leaders and military officers, that the whole South Asian sub-Continent is Hindustan and Bharat and that they have a duty to suppress and even kill any dissenting voice from any regions contagious with the Indian land mass. I hope the children and grand children of these slain soldiers who now have education, know the real historical and political facts. They have every right to sue their own Government for compensations for sacrificing their parent’s lives with their government's political greed for a bigger and wider India. This bloody Indo -Naga war has for too long gone on, costing too many innocent lives in both Nagaland and India. When will honest Indian politicians finally acknowledge the real facts of history, geography and politics and bring the war to an end. I for one, am utterly tired of writing about violence, counter violence and the deaths they bring to families in India and Nagaland. When will the war end so that Nagas and Indians can live in peace as friendly neighbors? N.B. The same thoughts from different angles and aspects have already been expressed in my (2001 published) book “The Naga Saga” in pp. 353-370. Kaka D. Iralu

FIFA can no longer protect itself, says ex-investigator Stan Warwinka books ZURICH, JUNE 5 (REUTERS): The U.S.-led investigations into corruption at FIFA have pierced the veil of secrecy that protected soccer's top power-brokers and more dominoes can be expected to fall, said a former investigator on the governing body's ethics committee. Nicholas Davidson, a prominent lawyer and honorary president of New Zealand's football association, resigned from his role on FIFA's investigatory chamber before Swiss police arrested seven senior officials in Zurich last week. While defending the work of the ethics committee

and its "fearless" personnel, Davidson said the governing body's lack of transparency had set it up to fail. "It strikes me from my observations of the people who work in the business, and I'm talking about ordinary employees, (they are) hugely skilful, talented people, and dedicated," Davidson said in a phone interview from Christchurch on Friday. "Somewhere above that there is a veneer of people who make decisions who have the ability to intercept or be involved in some way in the vast money that goes around." "Those people had been

protected by that layer of, if you like, working together. Now that layer, that veneer, has been pierced. And so they will talk. People talk. As Prince William said, this is the 'Salt Lake City moment'. And I think we've just scratched it." English FA president Prince William last week compared the FIFA scandal to the Salt Lake City Olympics corruption crisis that ultimately sparked deep reform of the International Olympic Committee and the bidding process for Games. Davidson, who feels world soccer is going through a similar "seachange", stressed he left

FIFA due to a change in his professional life and not because of his work there or the unfolding scandal. However, he said he nearly quit only months after starting work in earnest last October, following the departure of FIFA's independent investigator Michael Garcia. The former U.S. attorney submitted a report of his 18-month investigation into the controversial bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, which are now the subject of a probe by Swiss authorities. A summary of that report released by FIFA ethics judge Hans-Joachim Eckert in November found some impropriety by bid teams, but not enough to re-open the bidding process for the showpiece events due to be

held in Russia and Qatar respectively. Garcia, who complained the summary misrepresented his report, resigned in December after his appeal against Eckert's statement was rejected by a FIFA committee. "At that stage I was going to step down, but I was persuaded there was much to be done from this report and that investigations would be open," said Davidson, who credited Cornel Borbely, chairman of the ethics committee's investigatory chamber, for talking him round. Davidson declined to comment on the scope of his work, only to say it was separate from the allegations swirling around the officials and media executives indicted last week.

French Open final berth

PARIS, JUNE 5 (AFP): Only one man before him had managed to lose in the first round a year before, and the following year go as far as reaching the final. That man, Albert Costa, reached the feat between 2001 and 2002. From losing in the first round to Julien Boutter in 2001, to go all the way and win the title in 2002. A fairy tale, a sport's dream. Now Stan Wawrinkacould follow in those footsteps. After battling the heat, the French crowd, home favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the sliding and dry red clay of Philippe Chatrier court, Stan Wawrinka has managed to reach his first ever Roland Garros final, only his second ever major final, on Friday. Wawrinka got his ticket to the final after a four-set grueling battle in the Parisian heat, finished with the final score of 6-3 6-7(1) 7-6(3) 6-4 after 3 hours and 46 minutes. He needed 11 attempts, but he finally made it. Wawrinka is back in his 'Stan the Man' Version one year and a half after having won a Grand Slam for the first time, at the 2014 Australian Open. A former Junior champion in Paris in 2003, Wawrinka becomes the first former junior champion to reach the final at Roland Garros since Guillermo Coria in 2004. Only one man has managed to go all the

way and win the title both in juniors and pros, and that was Mats Wilander in 1988. That is also the same year the French crowd last saw a Frenchman reach the last act in Paris, Henri Leconte. That is a joy JoWilfried Tsonga won't live, at least not this 2015 year at the French Open. Stan Wawrinka was just too consistent compared to his opponent. Managing to stay focused all the time, pushing while put-

ting the ball on court, the Swiss showed important glimpses of his best form, the same form which last year brought him to success at the Australian Open. After Martina Hingis and Roger Federer only Stan Wawrinka has managed to bring the Swiss flag into a Grand Slam final. Against either Djokovic or Murray, Stan won't be the favorite. But again, that was also the case in Melbourne...

EPL to drop title sponsor from 2016-17

C M

LoNdoN, JUNE 5 (IANS): The English Premier League has confirmed that it will be sponsorless from the 2016-17 season. The new sponsorship strategy means to present a 'clean' brand image which learned from major American sports leagues like the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Football League (NFL). But the 'sponsorfree' model will not have

an impact on the Premier League clubs' right to seek their own commercial sponsorship, reports Xinhua. "Barclays has been an excellent partner for the League throughout their sponsorship of the competition and we look forward to working with them in 2015/16, the final season of their title sponsorship," said a Premier League spokesman on Friday. The Premier League has

been sponsored by British banking company Barclays, who paid $57 million for a three-year sponsorship deal in 2004 and subsequent extensions saw the value rise to the $120 million paid for the existing three-year sponsorship in 2012. The league, which did not have a title sponsor in its inaugural season of 1992-93, will simply be called the Premier League from next year.
