Morung Express News Kohima | March 14
The fire in Dzukou valley is 90% under control but continues to spread due to the wind. At around 6:30 am on March 14, 30 IRB personnel from 14 Bn, 20 army personnel from 164 Bn, Naga territorial army, Jakhama, 50 forest personnel from Dimapur and Kohima, volunteers from Southern Angami villages, SAYO and SAPO members along with the district administration led by the DC Kohima Rovilatuo Mor and the Police left for Dzukou from Viswema to take stock of the situation. SAPO president, Zadeho, informed today that around 90% of the fire is under control. Around 200 volunteers were at the spot controlling the fire. However, he stated, the wind di-
rections have been severe so it cannot be predicted yet if the fire will stop. Most of the work at the fire site has been through manpower, he said, with the help of shovels and machetes to pull out and burn dead plants separately. The president added that though dead plants were weeded out, the danger lies in the old dead trees which are around 30-40 feet tall and beyond human capacity to control their burning. However, the volunteers have been able to control the fire from spreading towards Tempu peak. District Forest Officer, Sidramappa, informed that the fire was active in few pockets along the ridge above Viswema and Jakhama towards evening. Minister for Forest, Environment & Ecology, Dr. Nicky Kire, also visited the
base camp today at Viswema and interacted with the administration, forest, SAYO and SAPO officials. Interacting with those present at the base camp the DC said that SAYO officials should take up the matter seriously and initiate preventive measures so that such fire incidents do not occur in future. The Indian Air Force (IAF) choppers did five sorties with water today to douse the fire and are expected early tomorrow. The coordination committee has decided to send around 50-60 volunteers and forest personnel to the valley in the wee hours to control the possible fire. The contingent will remain in the valley guest house and will be supported adequately by logistics. Refreshments are being managed by SAPO and SAYO at the base camp.
“We are meeting at a time when problems are not being solved. We need to understand what needs to be done. We have to claim ownership of the crisis and decide,” said noted Social and Peace Activist Niketu Iralu while addressing nearly 1000 students at the Inaugural Session of the 26th Biennial General Conference of the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) on March 14. Iralu, who spoke on the conference theme ‘Engaging Challenges,’ focused on rebuilding society by engaging with challenges. “It is in governance where positive changes can be brought about, where people can hope,” said Iralu, outlining challenges which need to be met. The fields of education, health, agriculture, which touch the life of every Naga, need to be challenged in all the villages. Citing funds given by the Government of India and its impact on the Nagas, Iralu stressed the need for every village to make a decision to use the funds honestly and truthfully; then change will come. “We must become a people others can respect. If we are not respected, our people will be destroyed,” he pointed out. To rebuild respect, one has to examine one’s life and take responsibility for one’s actions and mistakes.
Social and peace activist Niketu Iralu addresses the inaugural session of the 26th Biennial General Conference of the Angami Students’ Union underway in Kohima from March 14 to 15. (Morung Photo)
An important element in engaging with challenges was put forward by Dr. Vilhousa Seleyi, President, Angami Public Organization (APO). In his speech, he focused on two values or watchwords of the Angami community which builds an individual and enables a community to live in harmony with the rest. The two watchwords “Menga ho” (It is shame) and “Kenyü ho” (It is taboo) were/are perhaps the guiding principles of the community. While the value of shame enables a person to respect and love himself/herself and discipline them, the value of taboo helps a person stay pure, disciplined and a community to live in peace and harmony. “The esteemed personality of a person is built on this watchword ‘Menga ho’. The value of ‘Kenyü’ should be a guiding path in a person’s search for knowledge and wisdom. The magnitude of using these two values determines the future of the children,” added Dr. Seleyi. He urged the students to make Kemenga and Kenyü armour which discipline the individual and the community from making mistakes and creating trouble in the community.
The session was chaired by Neizokhotuo Belho with an invocation by Rev. Fr. Matthew Keemattan, Parish Priest Chiephobozou Catholic. The presidential address was delivered by Zakie Khate, President ASU. Special songs were performed by Ruokuovotuo Pfüseno and the Kohima Village Students’ Union. Honesty and Truth While also making a mention of the Dimapur incident and the Dzükou inferno, Niketu Iralu posited the importance of people owning up to their mistakes truthfully. Unless we have somebody who comes and says, “I’m sorry, I did it,” we won’t be able to answer such crisis. Unless honesty and truth prevails, Naga society will not be able to answer or solve crises, and the society as well as the ecosystem will continue to deteriorate. To engage in the current challenges is also to put aside past glories, move forward and sacrifice a little, aptly noted NSF President, Tongpang Ozukum. In his speech, Ozukum acknowledged the contributions of the Angamis in various social reforms in Naga society and for shaping the
ASU into what it is today. However, if Naga society has to compete with the rest of the world, he pointed out, only basking in past glories and taking pride in our ancestors’ achievement will lead us nowhere. “We have left behind various principles and traditional ethos and values. Today our society is afraid to speak of the truth,” said Ozukum, asserting that Naga society is in a “great mess” and to change the society, there is a need for a paradigm shift starting from the grassroots. He concluded with an appeal to the students to sacrifice a little for the future and break the barriers of tribalism. A society which has become destructive, a society which has created itself more into leeches rather than Nagas needs to re-examine itself, said Iralu. He further pointed out, “We have to see ourselves as much as we can and let others see us in areas where we can’t.” In conclusion, Iralu challenged the students to affirm to themselves - I am important and my role is important, that our life is important and we are not going to waste it. Perhaps, a beginning can be made to engage in challenges and to rebuild a people again.
Mahatma Gandhi gets London north east is economic statue near nemesis, Churchill corridor of india: Doner
London, March 14 (reuters): A statue of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled on Saturday in London’s prestigious Parliament Square, a space packed mostly with monuments to men who served the British Empire that Gandhi helped destroy. In an ironic twist noted by the Indian government, Gandhi’s likeness now shares the same space as a statue of Britain’s former leader Winston Churchill, who tried to thwart Indian independence and who despised Gandhi and his aims. Churchill famously called Gandhi “a seditious Middle Temple lawyer, now posing as a fakir of a type well known in the East, striding half-naked up the steps of the Vice-regal palace.” But almost seven decades after India won independence from Britain in 1947, thanks in large part to Gandhi’s peaceful civil disobedience campaign, relations between the two countries are strong with both keen to boost economic ties. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley unveiled the 9-foottall statue opposite the British parliament, marking the 100th anniversary of Gandhi’s return to India

from South Africa to start the struggle for self rule. “It ... marks an important, historic moment celebrating the strong bond between our two nations,” Jaitley said. “India and the UK share the same values
and we are a partnership of equals. This lasting friendship is just one of many legacies left by Gandhi.” Prime Minister David Cameron, who looked on as Jaitley removed an orange drape from the statue, said
the monument celebrated the special friendship between the world’s oldest democracy and its largest. “This statue is a magnificent tribute to one of the most towering figures in the history of world politics,” said Cameron. “Many of his teachings remain as potent today as when he first made them.” Film star Amitabh Bachchan spoke, as did Gandhi’s grandson Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi. The bronze statue of Gandhi, which shows him standing up wearing a dhoti, was crafted by British sculptor Philip Jackson. It is based on a photograph of Gandhi standing outside the offices of the British prime minister in 1931. The statue is lower than others on the square, a deliberate decision made by the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, which raised money for the monument, to reflect the fact that Gandhi considered himself a man of the people. Although the square is mostly filled with statues of former British prime ministers, Gandhi has been placed close to monuments of former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln and South African President Nelson Mandela.
dIMaPur, March 15 (Mexn): Union Minister of Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh today described the Northeast region as the “Economic Corridor of India” for entry into international market beyond the eastern borders of the country. He was addressing at the inaugural session of the Northeast Business Summit hosted by the Ministry of DoNER in collaboration with Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Delhi, according to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release. To “act east” distal to the eastern borders of India, we will first need to successfully “act east” proximal to the Indian borders within the eight Northeastern States, he added. Referring to new initiatives undertaken by him, Dr Jitendra Singh said, beginning from January 2015, he has introduced the practice of holding a camp secretariat office by rotation every month in each of the eight States of Northeast and informed that two such Secretariat Camps have already been held in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh respectively, in the months of January and February while the camp in March will be held in Mizoram. This, he said, will send out a loud message to the people of Northeast that they do not need to travel to New Delhi each time when they have a grievance. On the contrary, it is New Delhi which will reach out to them, he added. DoNER will also be taking up the project “Make in North-East” on the lines of “Make in India” project which was earlier announced by the Prime Minister. Dr Jitendra Singh said he is personally trying to reach out to industrial houses to promote organic farming and food processing which will generate revenue as well as employment in the region.
He appealed to leaders of the business community including Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to become active participants in this initiative and to inspire potential investors and entrepreneurs to supplement the DoNER Ministry’s efforts in the region. This will not only help in promoting industry and business but will also bridge the psychological barriers and bring Northeast closer to mainstream India’s brisk march on the road to development and growth, he observed. Senior government representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar are participating in this summit. The budget estimate of the ministry for the year 2015-16 is about Rs 2150 crores. Mary Kom appointed NE Brand Ambassador Olympic medal winning boxer MC Mary Kom is being appointed as the brand ambassador of the Northeast to showcase the potential of the region which offers Rs. 2.4 trillion business opportunities across various sectors. An official announcement in this regard would be made soon, Minister of State for DoNER Dr Jitendra Singh said. “We are going to have a brand ambassador for Northeast. So, after a lot of deliberations we have zeroed in on the name of MC Mary Kom as the brand ambassador. We will make a formal announcement in a couple of days from now when she is in Delhi,” Singh said while addressing the 10th North East Business Summit in New Delhi. Mary Kom is a five time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.

MDAVO observe International River’s Day
Imphal, march 14 (mExN): The Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organization – Citizens’ Concern for Dams and Development and Campaign for Peoples Goals for Sustainable Development – observed the International Rivers Day on March 14 at Chadong Village, Ukhrul District along the Thoubal River. A press release from CoChairperson Aram Pamei informed that the observation was marked by protest against Mapithel dam and speeches from environmentalist, rights activists and cultural presentations. Wungshangphy Keishang of Riha village and K.S. Marina of Chadong village shared poems, entitled “Save Yangwui Kong” and “Mapithel Valley.” Folk songs were presented by elders of Chadong. Sakhathan, Chairman of Mapithel Dam Affected Villagers Organization (MDAVO), in his welcome address stated that Mapithel dam was constructed forcibly without taking prior consent of the affected communities. “The Government of Manipur adopted forceful construction of Mapithel dam with militarization of their land and resources and further adopted divide and rule tactics among the affected communities,” the release stated. Thanmi Kashung, Ad-
visor, MDAVO, expressed concern that the Government of Manipur started blocking the Thoubal River to complete the Mapithel dam construction by March 2015. The blocking of Yangwui Kong (Thoubal River) already led to submergence of prime agriculture land and forest areas in Louphoung and Chadong village. He expressed concern that the Mapithel dam will submerge Chadong village in Monsoon season. Villagers will be forced to become refugees in their own land, he stated. Kashung demanded the blocking of Thoubal River and the construction of Mapithel dam be stopped. Pamei, Co-Chairperson, Citizens Concern for Dams and Development shared how the Government of Manipur, has been insensitive to the land rights and intrinsic livelihood and survival dependence of the indigenous communities on the Thoubal River. She shared that the Mapithel dam is already becoming anti people as the State refused to listen to rightful demands for participatory and rightful development processes. Sumshot Khullar of Naga women Union sharing on how the large scale development projects have affected communities, urged the communities to
remain united in resisting all development injustice introduced in Manipur. Jiten Yumnam expressed that the Mapithel Dam construction already set a nightmarish example for indigenous communities of Manipur. Her non violent struggle has been an inspiration for many across the world. “We all believe that democracy must listen to the voice of people and must not ignore such demands that are largely towards the objective of better governance and more humane society,” a press release issued by the organizers stated. “We also hope that more and more people will also come in support of the demand and we will raise our demand more strongly and loudly with our peaceful campaigning and advocacy,” the release added. Ravi Nitesh from SSSC remarked, “The vicious cycle of arrest of Irom
Sharmila is shameful and undemocratic. Instead of focusing on her demand, her issue, the government is only responding by arresting her. It is shameful that in these 15 years, the concerned government of both state and centre have not made a single attempt to open talks with her.” On the occasion, the organizers submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister of India demanding for immediate steps to repeal AFSPA from all regions of North east and J&K and for immediate release of Irom Sharmila and quashing the charges of section 309 lodged against her in Manipur and Delhi. The memorandum also reminded of the promise made by the BJP unit, Manipur prior to the parliamentary elections that it would repeal AFSPA once they come to power. Many people from different walks life which include students and young professionals participated and observed the hunger strike. Supporters in Mumbai, Panipat, Lucknow and even from Korea also observed fast at their workplace and home, to express their solidarity with Irom Sharmila, the release informed.
The participants of the observation resolved to urge upon the Government of Manipur to stop the Mapithel dam construction, to stop blocking the Thoubal River and to let the Thoubal River flow free, and further to resume the Expert Review Committee formed by Government of Manipur in 2008 with affected communities.

Revamped environmental law raises hope for cleanup in China Jack Chang Associated Press
People in China who want to take industries to task for fouling their surroundings have been rushing to file complaints and lawsuits this year in a test of legal reforms that toughens environmental penalties and makes clear that many publicinterest groups have the right to sue. Environmental watchdogs say people have filed hundreds of complaints with local governments under the new law launched in January, taking advantage of requirements that authorities respond to environmental complaints or risk having the cases be bumped up to higher levels of government. State media reports say at least one complaint resulted in immediate action, when authorities in eastern Shandong province shut down the coal furnace of a rubber factory that had bothered neighbors. Environmental groups also have filed six lawsuits that have
been accepted by Chinese courts, compared with one allowed during the same period last year. The new cases deal with everything from deforestation to illegal dumping by chemical plants, according to Zhang Boju, executive director of the nonprofit group Friends of Nature, which wrote two of the lawsuits. With a 300,000 yuan ($48,000) grant from Chinese e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba, Friends of Nature has set up a special fund to help other groups prepare their own lawsuits. In a country where officials often act above the law while willfully ignoring whole swaths of regulations, many Chinese fed up with environmental neglect say the reforms appear to be making a difference. Still, experts say, their success will depend on the continued receptiveness of the courts and local officials under pressure to curb the country’s notorious pollution problems. “The law brought predict-
ability to the process, where before there was no certainty about what we could do,” Zhang said. “We plan to do more cases and we’re helping other environmental groups do that as well.” Over the past three decades, Chinese leaders have prioritized economic development over environmental protections — and watched China’s skies fill with toxic haze while an estimated 55 percent of its groundwater became unsafe for human use. Public worries about China’s pollution woes were recently highlighted with the release of an online documentary called “Under the Dome” that detailed the health and social costs of Chinese environmental degradation. It received hundreds of millions of views in just a few days, before Chinese censors removed it from streaming sites. Over the past year, Chinese leaders have repeated that they are serious about cleaning up China’s air, water and soil. They’ve acknowledged that the
country’s pollution woes are not only a central source of social instability but, with China the world’s biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, also a linchpin in the global effort to avoid catastrophic climate change. During China’s annual legislative sessions, which end Sunday, China’s new environment minister, Chen Lijing, has said the government is committed to making full use of the reforms, and will commit itself to putting into effect environmental protections and inspections. “A new law can’t become a paper tiger,” Chen said March 7 in Beijing. “We want to let it become a weapon with steel teeth.” Among its provisions, the revised law specifies what kind of social organizations can file environmental lawsuits, with requirements including at least five years of experience in environmental public interest activities and registration with the government. About 700 groups qualify under the law, according
to a report by the All-China Environment Federation, a quasigovernmental coalition that has filed two lawsuits this year. The law allows authorities to impose fines for each day violations occur, rather than one-time fines, and requires officials to encourage “selfgoverning grass-roots organizations,” volunteers and others to help publicize and enforce environmental laws. The country has also launched a special environmental branch of its Supreme People’s Court to hear highlevel cases and help oversee a network of lower-level environmental tribunals. “In the previous law, it was a development-based approach, and now the purpose is to construct an ecological civilization,” said Ran Ran, an international studies assistant professor at Renmin University in Beijing. “It’s a more balanced approach.” Despite the new tools, the reforms don’t address a cen-
tral contradiction in China’s largely state-controlled economy: that the governments being asked to punish polluters are often the same ones that own the companies doing the polluting, said Benjamin van Rooij, a professor of U.S.-China business and law at the University of California at Irvine. “The laws are not going to be a force to push for a green agenda or to even deal with the widespread violation of laws that still exist,” Van Rooij said. “So for me, you need more than a change in law. You need political change.” Local groups, however, are hopeful. Friends of Nature said that only one of the four lawsuits they had filed before the reforms took effect was accepted over the past five years, compared to the two filed later and accepted in the first two months of this year. Compared to legal systems in the U.S. or Europe, Chinese courts accept fewer lawsuits in general, and plaintiffs are often put off by
paying high legal fees. Ada Kong, a senior campaigner with the environmental group Greenpeace in China, said she’s already seen an attitude change this year among local officials who have in the past been largely hostile to most Chinese citizens or groups calling out polluters. Just days into the new year, Greenpeace filed a complaint with a city in the northeastern province of Liaoning about wastewater discharged by a zinc smelter. After stalling for a few weeks, the city began checking back regularly with Greenpeace to give progress reports, Kong said. Recently, the city said the wastewater problem had been resolved. Kong said her group has yet to verify that claim, but added that officials’ attitudes have “changed to become more helpful.” “I think it’s the law and the government,” she said. “They’re paying more attention to this now.”
Govt offices see 95% rise in bribery over 5 yrs India’s GDP growth will be 7.5% this year: Jaitley The biggest increase in corruption in public offices has been by non-gazetted officers Devanik Saha IndiaSpend
A recent leak of information at the petroleum ministry revealed a deep nexus between public servants and corporates, the most recent reinforcement of the view that official corruption is endemic across India. An IndiaSpend analysis reveals that the number of senior government officials involved in public corruption cases investigated by state agencies has increased 95% over the past five years. The number of cases registered in states and union territories under the Prevention of Corruption Act increased 15%, from 3,683 in 2009 to 4,246 cases in 2013. The data reveal that in cases investigated by state agencies, the number of gazetted officers involved in corruption cases increased 95%, from 1,164 in 2009 to 2,274 in 2013, while the number of non-gazetted officers accused increased 16%, from 2,866 in 2010 from 3,317 in 2013. However, in cases investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the number of gazetted officers involved decreased 51%, from 1,241 in 2010 to 601 in 2013, while the number of non-gazetted officers involved increased 115%, from 417 in 2011 to 896 in 2013. “This is bound to happen,” said
Jagdeep Chhokar, Founder-Trustee, Association for Democratic Reforms, an advocacy. “Our elections are fought with black money obtained through corrupt practices and political parties have huge sums of unaccounted money. The first step is to make all political parties accountable and transparent with their funding. When the basic electoral process itself is corrupt, then we cannot expect honesty within government offices.” The petroleum-ministry espionage story also revealed the involvement of private persons in public corruption cases. Apart from the involvement of corporate executives, the police arrested a former journalist and an energy consultant, both accused of leaking and selling classified documents. There are differing views on whether the information procured by journalist Santanu Saikia was a legitimate form of journalism. Former investigative journalist Chitra Subramaniam Duella does not believe it was. “It is not justified for journalists to pay money for leaked information,” said Duella, “since it can become a business, as we saw in this case, and overall, it sets a wrong precedent for investigative journalism.” Investigative journalist Rana Ayyub agreed with that view. “There is a difference between indulging in crimes and paying your sources,” said
Ayyub. “If you are doing a story in a Maoist area or a conflict zone, then you might have to pay money or pay for drinks and food for your source to give you information. But the petroleum ministry incident is a case of blatant corruption. Leaking classified government document is not justified in any manner, and I do not support it in any way.” Data reveal that the involvement of private persons in corruption cases investigated by state agencies increased 20% from 889 in 2009 to 1071 in 2013. “The reason this is happening at such a large scale is two-fold: everyone is doing it and making money on the sly, so why not,” said Duella. “Secondly, nobody goes to jail in many of the cases.” After the incident, there have been many calls to make lobbying legal in India, a view echoed by Chhokar and Duella. “I think lobbying should be made legal, and the names of the lobbying firms registered with industry bodies, such as Associate Chambers of Commerce of India (ASSOCHAM) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). This is done all over the world in democracies. It strengthens systems and builds in transparency and accountability.” (IndiaSpend.org is a data-driven, public-interest journalism non-profit)

Like our fashion shoot in the seaside town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Vilkeviciute is warm and sunny. "It was so cool," she says of the shoot. "This was my first job back after the holidays. I went home to Lithuania for Christmas and then skiing in Switzerland, but I definitely prefer sunny climates. I've been to Puerto Vallarta before but never had time to enjoy it. This time I arrived in the morning and had the whole day off so I had breakfast with the team and then we all went into town." Vilkeviciute, 26, is a former Victoria's Secret model, currently the face of Calvin Klein and H&M , and this month launches Paradiso, a new fragrance by Roberto Cavalli . One of the sexiest - and in-demand - models on the planet, she has that classic brand of Eastern European beauty: pale skin, piercing blue eyes, lithe limbs and wavy blonde hair. Not unlike a younger Claudia Schiffer. Incidentally, Schiffer and her supermodel contemporary Naomi Campbell were the only names Vilkeviciute had even heard of growing up in Kaunas, Lithuania's second largest city. Her childhood was "simple and perfect, a lot of nature around and forests". She rode horses, played basketball, hung out with her classmates (with all of whom she is still in contact), and learnt to play the piano, guitar, drums and accordion. She is close to her younger sister, Karolina 23, who works for an events management company. Their father is a teacher, their mother a housewife. "I hadn't even heard of Kate Moss and I never, never thought about modelling - it was so far from my world," Vilkeviciute says. "We only had a few TV channels and the computer came late. I thought for sure I would go to university but I had no idea to do what. At school I was good at maths and chemistry; in Lithuania, most people want to become a doctor or a lawyer." Fate - along with the fashion industry - had other plans. Aged 17, while on holiday with her family in Palanga, a beach resort on the Baltic Sea, Vilkeviciute was scouted by a local agency. "Every day they would give me flyers to come to a competition, but my dad didn't go for it. Then after researching the agency he woke me up one morning and asked if I wanted to go see them. And I thought, why not?" Within a weeks Vilkeviciute was living and working in Barcelona (she now speaks Spanish). A stint in Paris followed, and for the past seven years she has called New York home. "It's a working town; it's like boom, boom, boom." By 'boom' we are talking the kind of pinchme career moments most models can only dream of. "There have been quite a few highlights but one was definitely working with [Mario] Testino. He's one of my favourite photographers, even my parents are crazy about him. And of course working with Karl Lagerfeld and appearing in his silent movie as Coco

here are many things to consider when donning a pair of sweats and a hoodie for an early morning class or making yourself beautiful and dapper for an evening out on the town. I’m willing to bet that when you’re rummaging through your drawers or closet, you rarely think about where your threads actually came from before you bought it at a store or sneakily snatched it from your roommate a year ago. Fashion isn’t just about the Ellie Saab dress Emma Stone sported on the red carpet or those beautiful weeks when all I want to do is see what Burberry came up with this season on the runway. It’s also about the impact on the economy, environment and society — on local, national and international stages.
So I’m going to look into these impacts and how they affect our wallets, our social circles and Mother Nature. I’m going to give you the low-down on what happens before and after our clothes, beauty and hair products get stocked in our favorite stores and added to our online shopping carts. How are we making our clothing and fashion choices in order to treat the world around us with respect? Is that company that you and your friends faithfully shop at making their clothes in good taste or using underpaid, overworked employees to manufacture products from materials that have a negative impact on nature? So, what does all that have to do with us lowly college students trudging to class on the curtails of winter, wearing sweatpants, leggings and some coffee-stained hoodie? Well, someone bought
your clothes and — for you DIY-ers out there — the fabric and thread to create them. There’s also groups of people in parts of the world who harvest cotton and manufactures the materials. I hope to better inform not only myself, but also audiences with the bigger picture of this self-expressive aspect of society. I’m not going to bore you every single week with the big picture of the fashion industry, though. I’ll still give updates and my opinion on trends, DIY projects and why Kanye’s fashion line looks like someone wrapped a bunch of bored models in fleshto n e d p o tato sa cks. What’s up with that? Anna Wintour didn’t look too amused by it, either. Anyways, always wear a smile but never a brown belt with black shoes. Korean model shares keys to success in fashion capitals

ark Sung-jin is one of Korea's hottest models. The fashion model website "Models.com" ranked him the 27th in the world last year and he was nominated as one of the 11 candidates for ‘Model of the Year: Men' category. No Korean male model has achieved similar recognition. "If I am to choose two words that best describes myself, they are ‘self-esteem,' and ‘guts.' Guts helped me become a global model," Park said in a recent Korea Times interview. A former art student, he did not foresee modeling in his future. "My cousin knew a manager in the model agency," "He offered me a shoot for a Korean brand called Kai-aakmann and it was a good pay. I was working at a shop selling surfing items in Busan, but I quit the job and came to Seoul for a better future," said Park. Only a year after Park had started modeling, he knew that Korea was too small for him. In 2012 spring, he flew to New York.. Park's potential as a model reached its peak after arriving in New York. He modeled for high-end brands such as Hermes, John Galliano and Raf Simons. The unknown model from Busan was suddenly
appearing in renowned fashion capitals -- New York, London, Milano and Paris. A photo-sho ot for the Italian luxury goods house Bottega Veneta's 2015 Spring Summer collection has special meaning for Park. He worked with the renowned contemporary art photographer Araki Nobuyoshi and model Saskia de Brauw. "We met in Japan," Park said. "Nobuyoshi is originally not a fashion photographer and he shoots suggestive prints. It only took him six hours to do his job when usually it takes a whole day. I did not get to check my picture because he used film-camera," said Park. Park does not regret becoming a model. He loves the fact that he can earn money while doing something he loves. Now, the model cannot imagine himself with a different job. Park was pessimistic about young Korean models jumping into American runways without proper preparation. "Europe might work, if you have really unique mask. Some Korean models may be seen in European Fashion Week but it is hard to find them in New York," said Park.
ho knows what deal, if any, was struck between Valentino and Paramount, the studio behind Zoolander 2 , but announcing its arrival via one of the most prestigious shows in Paris was a stroke of marketing genius, even if it meant that the exquisite collection by Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, Valentino's creative directors, was more or less completely upstaged. When Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson strutted down the Valentino catwalk on Tuesday, in character as Derek and Hansel, the two ludicrous male models they played in Zoolander, the house erupted. Zoolander is one of the most critically and commercially successful fashion spoofs of all time. The list is not long, granted. There are facets of the fashion world so ludicrous they defy parody. Rumoured supporting cast members for Zoolander 2 If Stiller hasn't lost his touch, the jokes may be far darker this time. Racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, sizeism, ageism - in the last decade fashion has been heavily implicated in most of the major, as well as some of the more recherché, isms. It has found itself in a pickle with its working practices in the developing world, and some of its most feted photographers alleged "working" practices in the studio. Ooh, and let's not forget the drugs, fiscal, and
Chanel." Also up there was Tom Ford's 2012 debut show at New York Fashion Week in which she starred alongside the likes of Stella Tennant, Carolyn Murphy and Karen Elson. "Everyone had goosebumps, we were so free, we could do whatever we wanted. It was magical." What does she believe is the secret to her appeal? "There is no secret; a lot has to do with personality and luck. I could say I am more of a classic kind of beauty. Maybe it's because I am outgoing and positive and people are tired of bitches. It's funny but being in this business has taught me to love the things about myself I never used to like. I used to think, why are my fingers so long? My smile is so weird because when I smile my lip goes up. And my legs are not straight. Now even if people don't like it I don't care, I have become so comfortable with myself." Not that you'll see her indulging in a neverending display of supermodel selfies. "I am not very open when it comes to social media and to be honest I would like it not to exist. It's amazing for business but on a personal level it's very impersonal." She says the best part of her job is travelling to far-flung destinations. "My family didn't travel - we didn't have the money. Now even if I have days off I am flying somewhere and I take my family and we have an amazing time." The recent trip to Switzerland was the first time Vilkeviciute had skied and she is now hooked. She has also fallen for Australia. "I visited Sydney and Byron Bay, which I loved, and I learnt to scuba-dive on Lizard Island - it's so beautiful and you see the most amazing fish." Then there is India. "My mum and sister came and it was such a special time. We didn't do the typical yoga, spiritual thing; we stayed in Rajasthan and every day we went to a different city." She is also a mad kite-surfer and a fan of old-school rock'n'roll, "I always try to see bands like the Eagles, Neil Young and the Rolling Stones when they are in New York." Photography books, especially those filled with old fashion images, are another inspiration. "I love and appreciate fashion but I am casual about the way I dress." Leather jackets
are a particular weakness. "It's a model thing. It was my dream when I was a young girl to wear leather as I thought it was only for bikers and cool people. And I love the black suit Tom Ford sent me as a present after the show. I don't know how many times I have worn it. I definitely prefer more tailored man-style dressing." And in her downtime? "Downtime, what's downtime?" On the rare occasion she finds a gap in her schedule she prefers catching up with friends over breakfast (often Buvette in the West Village) or a low-key dinner to hitting the latest model hangout. "Italian food is amazing. I love Lithuanian food, too, but I didn't realise how heavy it was until I left it - everything is with potatoes." These days her diet consists mainly of 'fish, salads and chicken, basic stuff", though she is a self-confessed chocoholic and partial to vodka with freshly squeezed orange juice. "I am so lucky that I have never really had to worry about dieting or putting on weight, though I do work out with a trainer because it feels good." While Vilkeviciute acknowledges "modelling has to stop sometime", she admits she has no idea where she will live and what she will do when it does end, though she does want to "settle somewhere and have kids". For now Rudy, her American Staffy, is her baby. "Yesterday was the most fantastic day. Because of the storm everything was cancelled so I went with my dog, whose favourite thing is snow, to Madison Square Park and we just ran and ran." It was a rare and fleeting moment of downtime; the day after our interview it was back to the airport for Vilkeviciute - Madrid, Stockholm, Dubai and the Maldives were calling. "I totally feel lucky, but then I felt lucky to begin with. It doesn't feel like a dream, because it is so real. This is just my life." Thanks to Viva London

cally acclaimed film. Marc Jacobs left Louis Vuitton. John Galliano imploded. Alexander McQueen committed suicide. Some labels have disappeared. Others have been subsumed into the mighty conglomerates whose reach and influence sometimes seems to be all-conquering. Bags started to cost £1,000, then £2,000. Shoes gave us vertigo, then the bends as they plummeted back down to earth. The Russians became the new dictators of taste, then the Chinese, then the Kardashians. And then there is the rise of social media, the advent of selfies and the circus outside the shows, where narcissism is not so much a character defect as a strategy for launching oneself as a "brand". Full marks to Stiller and Wilson for shoulder-robing their way down the catwalk. Shoulder-robing, i.e. wearing your coat on your shoulders rather than putting your arms through the sleeves, is part of a mandatory skill set among street stylers, along with tucking your hair into your collar so that it looks as though you've had a bad bob without going near a hairdresser. Predictably Wilson/ Hansel's shoulder-robing ended badly, with his pastel blue coat slithering onto the catwalk. But if he and Stiller/Derek really want to capture the fashion zeitgeist, their characters will return not as models, but as Instagram stars.

magine… You have been diagnosed with a terminal disease. You are admitted in the ICU and may die any second. Then the doctor informs you that there is one cure that is 100% effective. Would you take it or insist on other probable options? You are traveling to a famous historical site. The tourist guide says there is only one road that leads to the location. Would you question angrily why there are not more roads and return home in protest? You have being wanting to buy something since a long time. Then the family next door called you and offers you this item for free because they no longer needed it. Would you turn down the offer? Finally imagine that a man comes along claiming to offer the only path to knowing God. Do you reject him for his audacity and criticize his intolerance for others who think differently? When his followers repeat the claim, will you write them off as closedminded bigots? Jesus made the following claim: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). This may sounds pretty outrageous when you come to think about it. With so many religions in the world, it is one thing to claim to be one of many ways, to hold a truth among other truths and to offer one lifestyle among many. It's quite different to claim to be "the way and the truth and the life." For harmony and tolerance would seemingly require Jesus to offer many options about salvation and coming to God. But he didn't. He said, "No one comes to the Father except through me." Then his followers came along and said the same. Peter, one of Jesus' closest disciples, had the audacity to say, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).
What if there is only one choice? Wait a minute! Is not that an arrogant claim? Salvation is found in Jesus and in no one else? There is no other name by which we can be saved? This claim is not exactly a model of inclusiveness. Christianity is considered the most controversial religion. Christianity is the most hated; the most debated and the most dissected religion of the world. Why? All because of its exclusive claim as the only true religion and the only way that lead to salvation and offer access to God. It will be mind boggling to count how many Bibles were torn or burned, how many churches were torched or demolished, how many believers were out casted by their own families and how many were killed in gruesome ways. But you see, when it comes to the truth not every option is equal and not every choice is valid. When it comes to eternal life, to salvation, to having a relationship with God, there's only one way... through Jesus Christ. Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”(John 14:6). The highest occupation for the Christian is Jesus Christ and an increasing personal knowledge of Him. Jesus is the way to the Father; he is the truth incarnate and He is the life to all who believe on him. We are in the desperate need in our day for “the truth” in the place of religious ignorance and error. Jesus gives us a perfect revelation of the LORD God. We are alienated from God because of our sin, and we need the perfect way into his holy presence. However, there is a way to God through the person of Jesus Christ. We are dead in our

trespasses and sins, and he alone gives us eternal life instead of death. Jesus is not only the way; he is the only way to the Father. Man is totally ruined in sin, and his only hope in a right relationship with God is through the atonement of Jesus Christ. The solution to our problem is a personal relationship with Christ. We are in total ruin in God’s sight. We are not slightly tarnished by sin; we are dead, lost, condemned, unclean, alienated, totally depraved. We cannot influence on our part a right relationship with God. The only way we can have a right relationship with him is by his grace. Because of our spiritual state we cannot fix ourselves. We are sinners. That is not an excuse or a cop-out. It is a reality. We are spiritually dead and lost. The only way back to God is by way of the cross of Jesus Christ. He is not merely a
spiritual guide who came to show sinners the path in which they ought to travel. He is himself the Way to the Father. There is no other way because Jesus Christ is the only person who can deal with our sin problem. The sinless, spotless Lamb of God took our sins upon himself and died for us. He is our substitute. He died in our place. All our sins were laid on him, and he paid our death penalty. A newspaper carried a story about a ferryboat that capsized at Zeberuze. A bank official who stretched his 6'3'' frame into a human bridge saved 20 people. He emerged as one of the heroes of the Zebruze ferry disaster. Andrew Parker, his family and others were sitting in the corner of the vessel, were cut off from the safety of a small island of metal by a 6 feet wide cascade of water that rushed in after the ferry turned over on its side. It was too big for people to jump across. Parker told reporters, "I just made sort of a bridge with my body." “I was the first one to climb across and I stepped on his back,” said his wife Eleanor. "I was petrified!" says his wife. "When you climbed on him you had to jump and the floor was slippery with water. All the people in our corner over there got over through his human bridge. Otherwise we couldn't have gotten over across that space." Once across the gap the 20 people reached the small island of safety to which the rescuers had thrown a rope. Parker said he stayed behind for about an hour and half helping people climb the rope to safety. People were screaming. "My daughter thought she was going to die," Eleanor Parker said. Former WWE Star Shawn Michaels' book 'Wrestling for My Life' becomes New York Times bestseller

hawn Michaels' recently released book “Wrestling for My Life: The Legend, the Reality, and the Faith of a WWE Superstar,” has hit top 10 for the sports category of The New York Times' best-seller list. Debuting at No. 6 in the sports section for the month of March, Wrestling for My Life chronicles Michaels' walk of faith and its intermingling with his professional wrestling career. Ahead of Michaels on the list, from No. 5 to No. 1, are: Power Forward by Reggie Love; On My Own Two Feet by Amy Purdy; H Is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald; The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown; and Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Published last month by Zondervan, Wrestling for My Life was Michaels' accounting of his life before and after accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In an earlier interview with The Christian Post, Michaels explained that Wrestling for My Life came out of working on another book in 2006. "I thought that it would be fun to be able to do one someday, based solely on my faith and the things that are truly most important in my life — that being my faith and my family," said Michaels. "[I'm] getting the opportunity to do it five years after I retired again. [I'm] in a place where you have a better opportunity to sit down, take your
time, and reflect on everything as opposed to 2006, when I was still in the midst of doing it." Unlike the previous book which was "more geared toward the wrestling fan and wrestling in general," Michaels said his new book focuses more on "my journey and my testimony," and that now is "the right time to do it." Wrestling for My Life included two forewords written by fellow WWE stars Paul "Triple H" Levesque and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, who each recalled the dramatic change in Michaels following his conversion. "With millions of fans, Michaels had adulation and all the attention he could ask for, but he discovered there was something more," reads the book's description on Amazon. "When he became a committed Christian during his years in the WWE it had to affect everything. Michaels reveals what it is like to be a man of faith in this unusual world and shares insights for all of us." Regarding the news of Wrestling for My Life becoming a best seller, WWE star and friend of Michaels, Triple H, sent out a tweet celebrating the news. "@ShawnMichaels has a long list of accomplishments. Headlining multiple WrestleManias, numerous championships ... now @nytimes best seller!!" tweeted Triple H in a post that has received as of Tuesday morning over 300 retweets and more than 579 favorites.

did something wrong, I didn't mean to do it." That is what Christ did. He built the bridge with his body on the Cross. As the Son of God he could span the extremes of man's sinfulness and God's righteousness and offers to us the hope of forgiveness and eternal life. Jesus speaks of himself as the Way. In Acts the disciples were referred to as “the Way.” Christian life itself is a long journey, a long road. This road sometimes passes through green pastures, sometimes through dry plains and deserts. Sometimes it leads over high and steep mountains. Sometimes it is difficult to know which road is the right one. There are so many choices, and the possibility to go astray always exists. Sometimes the road becomes narrow and no one seems to walk on it. Sometimes the road is wide and filled with happy travelers. Sometimes the road almost disappears. Sometimes the scenery is so breathtaking. Sometimes it is so miserable we are tempted to turn back. Sometimes the road encourages us to move ahead. Sometimes it is uninviting and hostile. The opinions and attitudes of fellow travelers can make the journey either pleasant and refreshing or depressing and aimless. In the beginning, when motivation abounded, it may not appear so long. But toward the end, the road seems so rough and demanding. What is the name of the road? Jesus! Where does it lead? Our home to heaven! And suddenly that road, which seemed so long, becomes so short. And then the journey is over! The peace and the grace of our Lord Jesus, who is the way and the truth and the life, and through whom we have the abundant life be with you all. May our God in heaven help you to walk the whole distance, all the way home.Amen.
Church growth is OK, but Church health is what matters
T
Rick Warren
he New Testament says a lot about the health of the church. Consider just a few verses:
“As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing.” —Eph. 4:16b (NLT) “The focus of my letter wasn’t on punishing the offender but on getting you to take responsibility for the health of the church.” —2 Cor. 2:9 (Message) “You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other.” —James 3:18 (Message) Church health is the key to church growth. All living things grow if they’re healthy. You don’t have to make them grow—it’s just natural for living organisms. As a parent, I didn’t have to force my three children to grow. They naturally grew up. As long as I removed the hindrances, such as poor nutrition or an unsafe environment, their growth was automatic. If my children had not grown up, something would have been terribly wrong. I would have done whatever it took to discover the disease and correct it. I wouldn’t have remained passive, spouting clichés about faithfulness or wanting “quality not quantity” in my children. The same principle is true for the church. Since the church is a living organism, it’s natural for it to grow if it’s healthy. The church is a Body, not a business—an organism, not an organization. It’s alive. If a church is not growing, it is dying. What then is the secret of church health? In a word, it’s balance! Your body has nine different systems (circulatory, respiratory, digestive, skeletal, etc.). When these systems are all in balance, it produces health. But when your body gets out of balance, we call that “disease.” Likewise, when the Body of Christ becomes unbalanced, disease occurs. Health and growth can only occur when everything is brought into balance. The importance of balance Our entire world is based on this principle of balance. Our planet was perfectly balanced by God, at just the right angle on its axis to support life. It rotates at a speed that minimizes vibration. If this planet were just a little closer to the sun, we’d burn up, and if it were just a few miles further away from the sun, we’d freeze to death. Nature is a collection of ecosystems that live in balance with each other. We now know that even the tiniest variation in the ecosystem creates a chain reaction. God has set up a food chain with plants and animals in balance. In architecture, structures must be balanced. If the stress isn’t balanced, a building will collapse or a bridge will fall through. There must be equilibrium. If your life is not balanced, you
might collapse, and if your congregation is not balanced, it might collapse. As pastors and counselors, we must realize that healing is the recovery of balance to the body, soul and congregation. Healthy, lasting church growth is multidimensional. I’ve written extensively on the fact that church health has five facets: Every church needs to grow … • warmer through fellowship. • deeper through discipleship. • stronger through worship. • broader through ministry. • larger through evangelism. These five purposes of the church are commanded by Jesus in the Great Commandment and the Great Commission, explained by Paul in Ephesians 4, described in Jesus’ prayer for the church in John 17 and modeled by the first church in Jerusalem. In Acts 2:42-47 these five facets of health are mentioned: They fellowshipped, edified each other, worshipped, ministered and evangelized. As a result, verse 47 says, “the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Church growth is the natural result of church health. But church health can only occur when our message is biblical and our mission is balanced. Each of the five New Testament purposes of the church must be in equilibrium with the others for health to occur. Now this is important: Because we are imperfect beings, balance in a church does not occur naturally: In fact, we must continually correct imbalance! It’s human nature to overemphasize the aspect or purpose of the church we feel most passionate about. Most evangelical churches already do the five purposes of the church— sort of. But they don’t do them all equally well. One church may be strong in fellowship, yet weak in evangelism. Another may be strong in worship, yet weak in discipleship. Still another may be strong in evangelism, yet weak in ministry. Why is this? It’s the natural tendency of leaders to emphasize what they feel strongly about and neglect whatever they feel less passionate about. Around the world you can find churches that have become the extension of their pastor’s giftedness. They focus only on what he cares about most. Unless you set up a system and structure to intentionally balance the five purposes, your church will tend to overemphasize the purpose that best expresses the gifts and passion of its pastor. Healthy churches are built on purpose! By focusing equally on all five of the New Testament purposes of the church, your church will develop the healthy balance that makes lasting growth possible. Dr. Rick Warren is passionate about attacking what he calls the five “Global Goliaths” – spiritual emptiness, egocentric leadership, extreme poverty, pandemic disease, and illiteracy/ poor education. His goal is a second Reformation by restoring responsibility in people, credibility in churches, and civility in culture. He is a pastor, global strategist, theologian, and philanthropist.

Bride refuses to marry after groom fails to bow ghaziabaD, March 14 (iaNS): A groom learnt the hard way just how important it is bow before the bride so that she can garland him. A bride here walked out a marriage on Friday night when the groom was playfully lifted a little too high beyond her reach during their marriage ceremony. The marriage was called off and the groom's family ended up paying Rs.5 lakh to the bride's side for arranging the marriage function. Both the man and the woman, who would have been husband and wife, came to know each other while working in a multinational company in Pune and decided to tie the knot. The bride's family lives in Ghaziabad while the groom hails from Pune in Maharashtra. During the garlanding ceremony on Friday night, the friends of the groom lifted him too high due to which the bride could not garland him. She attempted to garland him thrice, and after that she refused to marry the man. A confrontation between both sides followed and police had to intervene. New Delhi, March 14 (iaNS) The Delhi Police on Saturday termed as "routine" a visit by a policeman to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's house
to make queries - including on his physical appearance - even as the party termed it "political espionage" and sought an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra
Modi. The BJP dismissed the Congress' allegations as ridiculous. Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said Assistant Sub-Inspector Shamsher Singh of the Special Branch had gone to get a proforma filled and left it at Gandhi's office March 3. He said the proforma was not personspecific and gathering such information about "vulnerable people" and revisiting it was part of the Special Branch's duties. "If he (the policeman) had gone with an ulterior motive or for snooping, he would not have left the proforma behind... There was no snooping, no instruction from the government of India. There is no pressure on police," he said. He said they had such information about Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and police have also visited residences of Congress leader Veerappa Moily and BJP veteran L.K. Advani. Bassi, however, admitted that "some shortcomings had been noticed (about the kind of ques-
tions in the proforma being used since 1999) and these will be rectified." His reaction came minutes after Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi condemned
telephone numbers and addresses of each of his (Gandhi's) associates, friends, what he does, where he goes," Singhvi said. "This kind of political espionage, snooping, sur-
There was no snooping, no instruction from the government of India: Police police's "unnecessary and weird inquiries" about Gandhi and launched a strong attack on the Modi government. The controversy erupted at a time Gandhi is on "leave of absence" to reflect on the party's future course. Alleging a Delhi Police officer was "found snooping" at Rahul Gandhi's residence a few days ago, he said when the Special Protection Group personnel stopped him, it was found he was trying to fill up a form with "very interesting somewhat weird questions" about Gandhi's name, his father's name, his height, gait, eye and hair colour, dress and shoes. "More importantly the
veillance and intrusion in political opponent's life may be the Gujarat model but not the Indian model," Singhvi said, referring to the oft-quoted Modi's Gujarat model of development. Taking potshots at Modi, who served as Gujarat chief minister for almost 13 years, he said: "Track record may show that it has been a model perfected in Gujarat. Indeed not only for political opponents but for, we are told, large number of tales about judges, journalists and private persons." Demanding a comprehensive explanation by Home Minister Rajnath Singh or the prime minister, he said that it was not a Congress-centric issue
and the party will raise it in parliament. "....It is something which everybody should stand up for, stand up against. It is something which no law permits." He said India is a proud democracy, not a police state. "This kind of political espionage is condemnable." BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi however ridiculed espionage charges levelled by the Congress, quipping the party considered itself to be above the law. "They think that the common practices of law do not apply to them," he said, adding: "If they call it espionage, then it shows their mentality." Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah however poked fun at the Delhi Police. "Honestly the Delhi Police-RG office script must have stand up comics salivating at what they can do with it. "Dear Delhi Police, just to save your chaps time & effort I'm 179 cms, medium build, fair complexion, grey eyes & greying hair. U R welcome," he tweeted.
PM Narendra Modi tours Sri Lanka's former war zone
cOlOMbO, March 14 (aP): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sri Lanka's former civil war zone on Saturday, in a sign of solidarity with minority Tamils who are calling for regional autonomy to end a decades-old ethnic conflict. Modi's visit to the Tamil heartland in the island nation's north, the first by an Indian prime minister, came a day after he called for greater autonomy for the Tamils during talks with Sri Lankan officials. He is on a two-day state visit to India's neighbor. During his visit to north, Modi commissioned a section of railway track built with Indian aid in Talaimannar and ceremonially began the construction work of a cultural center to be built in the town of Jaffna with Indian assistance. Jaffna is the cultural heartland of the Tamils and was the stage of many battles during Sri Lanka's quarter
century civil war. The war ended in 2009 when government forces defeated the Tamil Tiger rebels, who were fighting to create a separate state for Tamils in the country's north and east. Since the war's end, India has been calling on Sri Lanka to share power with the Tamils in order to promote reconciliation. India has a strong interest in the issue because southern India is home to 60 million Tamils. India's government, however, has been reluctant to become directly involved in Sri Lankan politics since a disastrous military intervention during the civil war left more than 1,000 Indian troops dead. The military intervention followed an agreement between India and Sri Lanka that led to an amendment of Sri Lanka's constitution and established provincial councils in an effort to end Tamil militancy.
During his talks Friday with Sri Lankan leaders, Modi said the full implementation of the particular amendment "and going beyond it would contribute to" building and promoting equality, justice, peace and dignity in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's former government promised to allow a greater degree of autonomy for the Tamil-majority regions, but later backtracked, saying it would take back the land and police powers given to the provincial councils. At the time, Indian leaders expressed dismay at the move. The current Sri Lankan government, which came to power in January, has promised to work toward ethnic reconciliation. Sri Lanka is the last leg of Modi's tour of the region, during which he has sought to woo smaller Indian Ocean states away from increasing Chinese influence. Modi is the first Indian

leader to visit Sri Lanka in 28 years, reciprocating the trip to India last month by Sri Lanka's new president, Maithripala Sirisena. In 1987, Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi traveled
to Sri Lanka to sign a peace accord in an effort to end the Tamil uprising, which was then in its early years. During his visit, Gandhi narrowly escaped serious injury when a Sri
Lankan sailor hit him with his rifle butt during a guard of honor inspection. Four years later, the Tamil Tigers assassinated Gandhi during an election rally in southern India.

'Gear up for online courses' challenge' Academic institutions should be benchmarked and accredited: Prez chaNDigarh, March 14 (iaNS): Calling for academic institutions to be benchmarked and accredited, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said universities should gear up to the challenge posed by new models of knowledge dispensation - especially online courses. Addressing the 64th annual convocation of Panjab University (PU) here, Mukherjee said the universities should be prepared to look at the future of knowledge dispensation. "Higher educational institutions would do well to recognise emerging global trends that are creating new models of knowledge dispensation. Rising costs of higher education and changing profile of education seekers, aided by technology, has led to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). "Due to its advantage of speed, scale and efficiency, it is fast catching up as the preferred mode of learning. Blended MOOCs - online instruction supplemented by periodic classroom interaction - also have the potential to gain ground,"

Mukherjee pointed out. Pitching for academic institutions in the country to be benchmarked and accredited, the president said these institutions should to create quality consciousness. "To pursue excellence, core competencies must be identified and centres of excellence nurtured. To create quality consciousness, every institution must be benchmarked and accredited," he added. "At the apex of the education system is the university. Indian universities have potential to be the leading institutions in the world. For that, urgent improvements in academic management are needed," Mukherjee said. The president said universities need to redefine teaching methodology to make it more effective. "To make learning more effective, teaching pedagogy must be refined, curricula up-dated regularly, an inter-disciplinary approach adopted and evaluation mechanism reformed," he said. The president honoured Nobel Peace Prize 2014 winner and Children's rights activist Kailash
Satyarthi, Fields Medal winner (2014) and noted Mathematician Professor Manjul Bhargava and renowned agricultural scientist and Padma Vibhushan recipient, M.S. Swaminathan, with honorary Doctor of Laws and Doctor of Science (honoris causa) degrees. Noted lyricist and film personality Gulzar was honoured with the PU Sahitya Rattan Award and leading ophthalmologist Amod Gupta of PGIMER was conferred the PU Vigyan Rattan Award. Emphasising that the teaching faculty to be made up-to-date in their field of knowledge, the president said faculty recharge programmes must be conducted. The president complimented PU for being the highest ranked Indian institution (276-300th bracket internationally) in the Times Higher Education Survey 2014-15. The president said roping in the industry in the academic scheme of things was the right thing to do in the present context. "An industry interface can benefit in terms of involvement of industry personnel in curricu-
lum design and project guidance; sponsorship of chair positions; and setting up of incubation centres and laboratories." He said these could be facilitated "through an industry-interface cell as well as by induction of industry experts in governance mechanisms". Mukherjee advocated that institutions should reach out to its alumni to associate them in academic management through governing bodies and for business and project mentoring and curriculum design. He said higher education institutions like universities should not confine themselves to classrooms and campuses. "These can act as a role model to usher in socio-economic development," he said, adding that academic institutions must take active part in the recent initiatives like 'Clean India' and 'Digital India' launched by the central government. On the occasion, 682 students, 514 of them women, received degrees and medals.
KOlKata, March 14 (iaNS): A 70-year-old nun at a convent in West Bengal's Nadia district was allegedly gang raped by dacoits in the early hours of Saturday, police said. Strongly condemning the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the matter. "We strongly condemn the incident that took place at the Ranaghat Convent. The CID will be examining all aspects to this horrific crime. Swift, strongest action to be taken," said Banerjee. The incident happened early on Saturday around 2 a.m. at the school Convent of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat, some 80 km from Kolkata. "The nun was allegedly
raped by the dacoits when she tried to prevent them looting the valuables inside the church. The victim has been hospitalised with critical injuries," said a police officer. Kolkata archbishop Thomas D'Souza, who visited the convent, said that the CCTV cameras have captured three of the culprits. "Around six to eight men barged into the convent and ransacked. They looted money and attacked on of our elderly sisters. The CCTV footages show three of the culprits who attacked the convent," said D'Souza. While locals blocked road and rail traffic in protest against the rape after the news broke out, students staged a candle lit march later in the day. The incident has attracted wide-
spread condemnation. While Women against Sexual Violence and State Repression (WSS) - a network of women from diverse political and social movements - strongly condemned the 'gruesome act', the United State Forum for all denominational Christians, said the incident is a part of a "greater conspiracy". "The incident is not merely a case of ordinary robbery but a part of some greater conspiracy," Herod Mullick of the Christian forum said. Leader of opposition and Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo member Surjya Kanta Mishra too condemned the incident and expressed concern over the increasing crimes against women in the state.

Vanuatu residents remain in shelters after massive cyclone WELLINGTON, March 14 (aP): Residents in cyclone-ravaged Vanuatu hunkered in emergency shelters for a second straight night Saturday after venturing out to find their homes damaged or blown away by the powerful storm, aid workers said. Packing winds of 270 kilometers (168 miles) per hour, Cyclone Pam tore through the tiny South Pacific archipelago early Saturday, leaving a trail of destruction and unconfirmed reports of dozens of deaths. Power remained out across Vanuatu later Saturday and people on many of the outer islands had no access to running water or outside communications, said Chloe Morrison, a World Vision emergency communications officer in the capital, Port Vila. Morrison said communications have been so problematic that her aid group hasn’t yet been able to account for many of its own 76 staff on the islands and authorities have been unable to assess the extent of the damage. “I can say that for anybody who wasn’t in a secure shelter last night, it would

have been a very, very tough time for them,” she said. Vanuatu has a population of 267,000 spread over 65 islands. About 47,000 people live in the capital. Morrison said authorities did a good job Friday moving thousands of people in Port Vila into 23 evacuation centers. With the winds and rain easing Saturday, many people stepped out only to find that their homes were
missing a roof or had disappeared, and were forced to return to the shelters. Teetering trees and downed power lines in Port Vila have made many areas hazardous, Morrison said, adding that she had heard reports of entire villages being destroyed in more remote areas. “It’s still really quite dangerous outside. Most people are still hunkering down,” she said.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the impact and scope of the disaster caused by the cyclone wasn’t yet clear, but he feared the damage and destruction could be widespread. “We hope the loss of life will be minimal,” he said during the World Conference on Disaster Risk and Reduction in Japan. The U.N. said it was preparing to deploy emergency rapid
response units. The president of Vanuatu, Baldwin Lonsdale, who was attending the conference, told participants, “I do not really know what impact the cyclone has had on Vanuatu.” “I am speaking to you today with a heart that is so heavy,” he said. “I stand to appeal on behalf of the government and the people to give a helping hand in this disaster.” Morrison said the first priority was to ensure people had adequate food, drinking water and shelter. Beyond that, she said, there would need to be a long and concerted rebuilding effort in the months ahead. She said the winds peaked between about midnight Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday. A westward change of course put populated areas directly in the path of Cyclone Pam. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said there were unconfirmed reports of 44 deaths in Vanuatu’s northeastern islands after Pam moved off its expected track. New Zealand on Saturday pledged 1 million New Zealand dollars ($734,000)
to help with relief efforts. Australia was preparing to send a crisis response team to Vanuatu if needed, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said. “There are destructive winds, rain, flooding, landslides, sea surges and very rough seas and the storm is exceedingly destructive there,” she said. “We are still assessing the situation, but we stand ready to assist.” The small island nation, located about a quarter of the way from Australia to Hawaii, has repeatedly warned it is already suffering devastating effects from climate change with the island’s coastal areas being washed away, forcing resettlement to higher ground and smaller yields on traditional crops. Scientists say it’s impossible to attribute single weather events like Cyclone Pam to climate change. The cyclone has already caused damage to other Pacific islands, including Kiribati and the Solomon Islands. Authorities in New Zealand are preparing for Cyclone Pam, which is forecast to pass north of the country on Sunday and Monday.
Myanmar ferry capsizes; 34 Cameroon says 25 Boko Haram suspects died in custody YaOUNDE (caMErOON), March 14 (aP): Defenders in Central Africa, based in the capital, dead, over a dozen missing Cameroon acknowledged that more than two Yaounde, cited “reliable sources” in claiming that YaNGON, March 14 (aP): A crowded double-decker passenger ferry capsized in northwestern Myanmar after being slammed by huge waves, killing 34 people and leaving more than a dozen missing, officials and state television said Saturday. Rescuers pulled 167 survivors from the sea and brought them to safety after the Aung Tagun 3 went down near Myebon in Rakhine state late Friday, said Myanmar Red Cross Disaster Management chief Maung Maung Khin. He said many of the survivors were sent back to their homes. The ferry was carrying 216 passengers, and 34 people were confirmed dead, state television reported. Search and rescue teams were looking for those still missing. Boat accidents due to overcrowding and bad weather are common in Myanmar’s river deltas and coastal regions. People rely on boat transport because of the lower cost and the inaccessibility of many areas by road.
‘Liberia one month away from being declared Ebola-free’ MONrOvIa, March 14 (IaNS): Liberia - one of the countries worst hit by Ebola - will be declared free of the disease by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on April 13 if no new case is reported, a Liberian official has said. Montserrado county - an Ebola hot spot - has gone 18 days without any new case being reported, said Tolbert Nyenswah, head of Liberia’s Ebola Incident Management System and assistant minister of health for preventive services, according to Xinhua on Friday. He said that other areas across the country have had no new cases for 21 days or longer. Lisa white, public information officer of the United Nations Mission for the Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), urged people
to stay alert and said: “Liberia’s borders are open to countries that are still fighting against the virus.” According to new figures released by the WHO, 10,004 people have died from the disease in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, and more than 24,350 people have been infected. The UN announced on Wednesday that the WHO and the World Food Programme (WFP) would be joining forces to bring the cases of Ebola outbreak in West Africa down to zero. Ebola is a form of haemorrhagic fever, symptoms of which are diarrhoea, vomiting and bleeding. The virus currently has no approved therapy or vaccine, though earlier this month, the WHO launched Ebola vaccination trials in Guinea.
dozen Boko Haram suspects died in custody late last year, but a government spokesman denied the country’s army was carrying out regular human rights abuses in its crackdown on the Nigerian Islamic extremist group. The 25 suspects were found dead in their cell one day after being arrested in December, Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a press conference Friday evening. They were part of a group of 56 detainees, and the cause of their deaths is still being determined, he said. “I can already state here that at this stage of investigation, no evidence has been established to corroborate that these persons were deliberately killed,” Bakary said. He added that a senior military official had been removed from his post and was being investigated over the deaths, though he did not identify this person by name. In January, the Network of Human Rights
50 Boko Haram suspects had suffocated to death in their cells before being buried in a mass grave. The group’s report accused the army of engaging in rights violations including torture “with impunity.” Boko Haram has been fighting a nearly 6-year insurgency against the Nigerian government, killing thousands and carrying out mass kidnappings, including of schoolgirls. The conflict has taken on an increasingly international dimension in recent months. Cameroon’s northern region was repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram before the country signed up to participate in a multinational force that has dislodged the group from a score of northeastern Nigerian towns in recent weeks. Nigeria acknowledged on Thursday that it is getting help from regional security operatives amid reports that South Africa and other foreign contractors are involved in the fight against Boko Haram.
Sierra Leone’s vice prez asks US for asylum FrEETOWN, March 14 (aP): Sierra Leone’s vice president sought asylum from the United States on Saturday, saying he no longer felt safe in the country after soldiers disarmed the security team at his residence. “I don’t feel safe this morning as vice president,” Samuel Sam-Sumana told The Associated Press by phone. He said he was not at his residence and declined to disclose his whereabouts. After hearing that soldiers were heading to his home Saturday morning, Sam-Sumana
said he tried and failed to contact President Ernest Bai Koroma. Instead, he said he reached top officials at the presidential guard who informed him his security team was being disarmed on orders from the president. Sam-Sumana said he then called U.S. Ambassador John Hoover and requested asylum. “They’re having a meeting and they will get back to me,” the vice president said. U.S. embassy spokeswoman Hollyn Green said Saturday that embassy officials, including Hoover, had “seen the news” but could not provide any reaction.
“There is no comment at the moment and there is no action on our part,” Green said. Green confirmed Saturday afternoon that Sam-Sumana was not in the U.S. embassy in Freetown. A government spokesman said he could not immediately comment on the situation. Sam-Sumana was expelled from the ruling All People’s Congress political party last week, accused of “orchestrating political violence” and trying to form a new party in his home district of Kono, located in the country’s Eastern Province.

MaLE, March 14 (aP): A former president of the Maldives called on his supporters to go out in the streets to protest his imprisonment after a quick and disputed trial that raised fears of more instability in the Indian Ocean nation. A three-judge panel ruled Friday that Mo-
hamed Nasheed, the country’s first democratically elected president, issued an illegal order to detain a senior judge in 2012 while in office. Nasheed has denied ordering the arrest. His supporters say the charges are aimed at eliminating him as a challenger against
incumbent President Yameen Abdul Gayoom in the 2018 presidential election. In anticipation of a ruling against him, Nasheed issued a public statement earlier Friday asking his supporters “to be courageous and confront the dictatorial powers,” and
change the government. He also asked them to “not be afraid of being arrested or facing a long sentence ... and go out onto the streets in protest.” On Saturday, only a few supporters responded to his call amid heavy police presence in the streets of the capital, Male. Nasheed’s defense lawyers pulled out of the case in the middle of the trial, accusing the court of rushing the hearings and not allowing them enough time to prepare. The United States said it was concerned “with the apparent lack of appropriate criminal procedure” and troubled by reports that the trial was conducted in a manner contrary to law. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki called on the Maldives government to ensure Nasheed’s safety and wellbeing in custody as well as restore confidence in democracy and rule of law. “We hope all Maldivians will express their views peacefully,” she said. Hu-
man rights group Amnesty International called the trial deeply flawed and “travesty of justice.” “Rather than responding to international calls to strengthen the impartiality of the judiciary, the government of the Maldives has proceeded with this sham trial for political reasons,” Richard Bennett, the group’s Asia-Pacific director, said in a statement. The court rejected an objection from Nasheed’s lawyers that two of the judges were not suitable to hear the case because they had testified against Nasheed at a police inquiry on the judge’s arrest. The court also dismissed four witnesses produced by Nasheed’s lawyers before they even testified, saying they were not strong enough witnesses. Nasheed had earlier been charged with abuse of power but prosecutors last month filed more serious charges under the country’s terrorism law. The trial was completed after 10 hearings over 23 days.

Pakistan detains Lakhvi again before his release
ISLaMabaD, March 14 (PTI): Pakistan on Saturday detained Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind, for 30 more days under a public security order before he could be released from jail following a court directive to set him free, which evoked a strong protest from India. “The Punjab government today issued the order of Lakhvi’s detention under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) for a period of 30 days. He will remain detained at the Adiala Jail where he is currently under custody in the Mumbai attack case,” a Home Department official of the Punjab government told PTI. An “outraged” India had on Friday summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit in New Delhi to lodge a strong protest against the Islamabad High Court order to release the LeT operations commander Lakhvi and said freeing him will pose a threat which “cannot be ignored“. The Home Department official said the detention order of 55-year-old Lakhvi had been issued on the request of the Interior Ministry. Lakhvi’s lawyer, Raja Rizwan Abbasi, claimed the Punjab government had issued the order in violation of Pakistan’s Constitution. “The Punjab government has in fact committed a contempt of court by detaining Mr Lakhvi under MPO which was twice suspended by the IHC,” he said, adding that he would challenge this “illegal” order in the high court on Monday. “The Punjab government has entered in the MPO controversy to try to make the matter more complex legally,” Abbasi said and expressed hope that the High Court would set aside the Punjab government’s order on the first hearing. The Adiala Jail authorities in Rawalpindi yesterday refused to release Lakhvi merely on the court’s order they received through fax from his counsel and asked him to produce the certified copy of the order for his release. “Today we were to produce a certified copy of the court’s order to the jail administration for my client’s release before the Punjab government intervened and detained him under an illegal order,” Abbasi said. The IHC judge, Noorul Haq Qureshi, yesterday suspended the government’s detention order of Lakhvi for the second time and ordered his immediate release.

F1: Hamilton takes pole Salvage Naga image...call in CBI for dominant Mercedes
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain waves as he stands with teammate Nico Rosberg, left, of Germany and Williams driver Felipe Massa of Brazil after qualifying for the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne on March 14. (AP Photo)
MELBOURNE, MaRch 14 (REUtERs): World champion Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Saturday ahead of Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg as the Silver Arrows continued to underline their dominance in Formula One. The Briton recorded a fastest lap of one minute 26.327 seconds, trouncing Rosberg by nearly six-tenths of a second while leaving the Williams of Felipe Massa well adrift in third. Hamilton set the early running in the final session before roaring home to capture his 39th pole on a windy afternoon at Albert Park. "It's been a great start to the weekend," Hamilton told reporters after capturing his first pole since the Russian Grand Prix last October. "A big rush and a huge effort from all the guys back at the factory to enable us to come here and have this performance so I feel incredibly blessed to have this car." The two-time world champion's pole was Mercedes' 12th in succession and victory in Sunday's race would appear a formality for the team that raffled 16 of last year's 19 race wins. Rosberg led Hamilton in two of the three practice sessions but locked up and spun into the grass in the final qualifying phase after complaining of an en-
gine cut-out in the second. However, last year's championship runner-up blamed himself for being off Hamilton's pace. "It wasn't a great day today," he said. "For me, the speed was there. I just didn't get it together." Four-times world champion Sebastian Vettel will start fourth on the grid on his debut for Ferrari with his Finnish team mate Kimi Raikkonen fifth. Valtteri Bottas will start sixth in the other Williams, although the Finn will rue an error on the final straight that denied him a chanceof claiming a spot on the second row. Though the sessions produced no major incidents, team radios blared throughout as drivers reported a myriad technical problems and occasionally skidded off track. McLaren's dismal weekend continued after troubled winter testing, with Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen to line up from the back of the grid after failing to be in the top 15 cars that advanced through to Q2. Red Bull are also well off the pace and Australian Daniel Ricciardo complained from the outset that his car lacked power. He will line up seventh on the grid while his Russian team mate, Daniil Kvyat, was knocked out in Q2 and will start 13th.
5th March 2015 disaster has critically mutilated the image of the Nagas in the eyes of both National and International community. While the world will surely understand the fundamentals that a 'Naga mob' is no different from the 'mobs' anywhere else around the globe... totally devoid of any rationality as a common denominator... the galling difference is the determined manner in which the Naga mob caused slow painful death of an accused with bloodthirsty brutality. Though the Government of Nagaland has set up a one man Judicial Inquiry, the public is well aware of the circumstantial political, social and tribal pressures that such an inquiry will be subjected to and will tend to leave behind a residue of doubt even within our home ground. It is more than likely therefore, that the National and International community too will find suf-
L
ficient reason(s) to write off a State controlled Inquiry as an eyewash kitchen exercise being mounted to repaint a softer picture of a situation that had gruesomely gone out of control... no matter how sincerely and honestly the job of inquiry is carried out. Restoring credibility of a Naga image will continue to be subjected to a great deal of critical scrutiny. It would take ages to salvage a saner image of the Nagas beyond our boundary. Viewed from this perspective, it makes greater sense to engage an acknowledged body like the CBI to independently delve into an impartial investigation and inquiry. What needs to sensitively be kept in mind is the fact that this shameful incident is not a close circuit Dimapur affair alone. It has a wider ramification of sentiments of other races beyond our State being hurt, who too would want creditable answers to rest their
et me give you an insight into what is going in the minds of all the young people outside Nagaland 'why did we have to resort to such action without proper and ethical way of investing the situation' no matter how proud we are as a state, and even as a proud Naga I am quite ashamed of the incident, this is a sensitive issue no doubt but that is why we should address it so that we know the consequences of our action. We have been compared to the barbaric uncivilized nation that we have fought so long to proof wrong. We are proud people who do not tolerate getting pushed around but I wonder what happens to the pride and the power of mobilization to fight when it comes to corruption or when pushed and used as pawns during election. After watching the videos and pictures circulated around I was appalled by the brutality if not the sheer pleasure of people's faces participating in the heinous act. This immediately made me sympathetic towards the allege 'rapist', now keep in mind no one knew exactly what had happened it was not given a proper trial neither am I supporting rape but because of the information many of us had on the incident we knew this was not
otherwise possible vengeful intent. The result of CBI inquiry would find more acceptability across the board that would ease the pressure on the Nagas living elsewhere in the mainland which the home grown Inquiry cannot accomplish. One other aspect that needs serious consideration is the fact that no stringent action has generally been taken in the aftermath of such a local inquiry which tends to get bogged down by multiple reasons including tribal concerns and finally forgotten. If the Government is seriously contemplating on streamlining the issue of governance and to plug the loopholes in the management system of General Administration, the Judiciary and the Police, this could be an opportunity to set the norms in order... based on a report of a neutral body. The culprits responsible for generating mob frenzy can also be dealt
LISTEN I Unokali Assume, New Delhi just another 'rape case' it had something to do with touching human sentiments, of a man who was not given a fair trial. This has nothing to with religion, race, culture or ethnicity, it's just about the course of humanity, the insensitivity of dragging and torturing a dead man's body was something many of us will never forget even just witnessing through our computer or mobile screen. How did such normalcy turn into anarchy, how did normal citizens(especially the youth) turn into blood thirsty sadistic, and the biggest question is how did the people though not participating in the act just stand there, taking videos and photos and acted as if it was just a normal day to day life activity. Where was the Christian state or just the fact of humanity gone on that particular day. Nagaland got the ultimate press coverage not just all over the country but internationally too for a very wrong reason and I can feel my heart along with thousands of hearts sink-
with as sternly as their commission dictates without a tribal overtone. Those involved in the arson and looting can equally be treated with an iron fist based on law rather than be tempered by tribal compulsions to ensure that such crimes do not get casually repeated. Organised mischief makers should not be allowed to go scot free with the kind of colossal image damage they have caused at the cost of the majority of innocent Naga sons of the soil. It is imperative that the matter of accountability before the Law of the land be restored and respected by all... once for all. This is therefore an appeal to the Government on behalf of concerned citizens to seriously consider setting up a CBI Inquiry instead, in the greater interest of the Nagas living within and outside Nagaland. ing because of what has happened back home. Since we proudly call ourselves a Naga but being a proud Naga has for now become painful to digest, maybe this is a lesson that will be passed on to the next generation. Let's not play the blame game, we should accept the wrong we've done trying to take the course of justice in our hands, don't dwell in it but overcome and try to change and not let such incidents ever occur again that put us nagas in the history of shame that might embarrass our future generation who deserves to be proud of their culture and state just the way we are. All of us outside Nagaland has been placed in a vulnerable position, we might think twice to go out, as if things were not hard for us already, now as the situation unfolds there is a skeptical feeling at the back of our minds as we stay alone far away from home without the comfort of our family and friends. At the end putting aside our own personal reasons and motives, why don’t we for a change, accept what is wrong in our society and try to rectify it. Write a history that can be looked upon with pride and glory, that can inspire positive changes instead of shame and our own past weaknesses being used against us.
Contradicting the Government’s decision to bar social media groups, the dark side
T
he heading itself should be able to give the complete picture of how the situation is being handled over the recently concluded unfortunate event that put the world's Spotlight on Nagaland, a place many didn't even know existed. Being a member of a Social Media group myself, a reasonable one, I had observed how our Law enforcers and legislators are unaware of how the Internet works and how important it is for them to seriously take in account the threat from the negative use of Internet has on the real world. The first thing i would like to share is, asking for a ban on a group in Facebook is like asking Facebook to shut down (which is currently beyond human imagination). Even if somehow, someway the groups are shut down one can always open up another and it will take just 2 minutes for the whole task to complete. Whereas running after people and other authorities to close down social media groups, pages etc will be
time consuming and wastage of resources unless that group is anti social and against the Guidelines of the provider which in this case is Facebook. Not forgetting that the authorities should have valid proof as well. Moving forward, i had experienced the sheer ignorance of our law enforcers to take the Social Media Groups appeal to consider the threats owing to the misuse of the Internet seriously and of course the misuse of Social Media Networking Site like Facebook. As a member of a Social media group we took the ownership to call up the Authorities and inform them of how people were misusing and spreading rumors and false statements across the Internet knowing the negative impact it will have but to our utter surprise they were least bothered about it. Not just one but two instance where we attempted. One suggested we call up the "Home Minister", one stated “we will look into it, nothing to worry about”. That’s a firsthand account of how our
conversation and appeal went. Now the recent press release where the Authorities had stated that they had approached the Ministry of Information and Technology to close down Facebook groups owing to the fact that those arrested over the Dimapur Lynching case got in touch through social media and got information from social media groups. The question one have to ask now is, after they had been so oblivious of the threats and after Social Media group approached the authorities requesting them to consider the immense threat false rumors and propaganda on Social media platform possesses, I am unable to understand why would anyone in their right thinking mind point the fingers back at those who were alerting them from the first place? First of all which 21st century human being with hands, legs, fingers and the privilege to own a smartphone does not get information and connect through social media? Who does not?. The blame game has been go-
ing on since the very beginning of this event, from the CM of Assam Mr. Gogoi spreading the false medical report statements to some individuals with vested interest on the Internet like Nilim Dutta and his sibling spreading false messages and trying to make the issue into a communal issue, how can the authorities point the fingers back at those who were the one’s manning the Internet making sure the rest of the WORLD does not get the wrong picture, how can the authorities point their fingers back at those who were requesting them to take steps to prevent such things from escalating and how did they come to think that the problem is the Social Media Groups. It does not make sense nor is it justifiable. Is it a last minute excuse and finger pointing tactics? Or have they ran out of options? Freedom of Expression is the right of every Human being but at the same time if misused it can be harmful to self and others around them which we have clearly seen and learned. This is not a plea but a request to
all the right thinking citizens to really cogitate and question how our authorities and legislators use the power showered upon them and how are they utilizing it. At the same time this recent unfortunate event is also a good lesson for our law authorities to take the threat from Internet seriously and enhance our State Cyber Police Team and enroll capable people into such post because the world is a Technology Park and we are all part of it whether we like it or not. That is where the world has come to and we should cope up with it. To choose to ignore is like writing our own obituary. I am not sharing this just because i am part of a Social Media group but i am sharing this because i am part of a group that has given so much when our own Govt. could not, i am sharing this because i am part of a group that has stood against Corruption in our land openly when it was just confined to kitchen talks, i am sharing this because i am part of a group that tried to build a platform for our young Naga Genera-
tion to stand and share their ideas with the rest of the Naga's both young and old and to the world, i am sharing this because i am part of group that is genuinely concerned of our people, our History and our political Struggle, i am sharing this because i am part of a group where i have personally and like me many thousand others had put their heart and soul in trying to build a better future for our people, i am sharing this because i am part of the group where we popularly claim it as the "VOICE OF THE PEOPLE" i am sharing this because i am part of a group called "THE NAGA BLOG" and we will make a justified stand, if we are wrong, we are wrong but when we are not, taking the opportunity of the unfortunate event to silence the Voice of the people is something we hope does not happen and definitely not the right decision to make. Hoping that at least some sense prevails in our leaders and our authorities and are able to see through the blanket of lies and misconception. Atsung Imchen, Kolkata
An observation of rape from wider perspective
A
Failed Naga City: Our heads hung in shame when the news broke out that one of our sisters was raped by a man on 23/02/2015 at Dimapur. This inhuman act had brought colossal damage not only to the victim’s physical body, mind and soul but also sent shock wave to all women about their security and safety in our land. While we were still struggling to reconcile the madness done to the woman victim, the perpetrator had been dragged out by the angry crowd from the prison and murdered in broad day light (05/03/2015) denying him legal justice. From Christian mission point of view, we have denied him the opportunity to repent. It is unfortunate that this kind of brutal and vicious unwanted incident is taking place in Nagaland, a State where Christianity- a religion of love - serve as State religion. It is also a land where there are hundreds of prayer centres and Churches. Even more so, this incident took place in Dimapur city where there are more than 40 theological colleges/seminaries imparting God’s word to thousand committed Christians and sending out more than 400 graduates every year. This city has some of the finest, costliest and biggest church buildings among Asian countries. However, the present scenario of Dimapur with increasing rate of rape, murders, prostitution, drug abusers, gamblers and drunkards tend to depict to outside world that in this city people are living without Christian principles. Sad enough to say that Naga Christians have failed to convert this city into a ‘mission field’, to reach out to different ethnic races with the message of love – the true Gospel. All Naga churches (or mission department) must give effort to make Dimapur city a city of
mission, where every individual of different races experience the love of God. Having said that, I would like to move on to the complex issue of rape. Reasons of Rape: Rape cannot be fully understood through a single lens. Only when see through a prism, we will be able to see the multi-dimensional issues involve in rape. It is a shameful thing to know that human being is the only animal that rapes others. No other animal commit this sin. Although rape is one of the oldest issues of human being, the means to control this menace is not found till today. Human laws and regulation and religious moral teaching have failed to stop this menace completely. In order to tackle the problem of rape, we need to look from diverse perspective more importantly the causes of rape and people’s reaction to it. Among the many reasons of rape, here are some of them. Firstly, rape is committed due to lust. Many people find modern technology as the culprit for the increasing rate of rape as explicit adult sexual contents are made easily accessible to all people-young and old. This has misguided many young people to commit rape. Secondly, men are mentally weaker than women. This is the reason why sometimes man-made society blamed women’s dressing style as the cause of rape. Thirdly, rape can be committed by a drunkard who has lost all sense of moral judgment. Fourthly, many cases of rape are related to caste domination. Among the Hindu society, upper caste groups indulge in raping women of lower caste groups as a means of domination. Fifthly, rape is used as a means of inflicting fear on the enemy and as revenge during war and conflict. Such instances can be seen committed by Indian armed forces raping Naga women during combing operation against Naga in-
surgents and Naga IRB personnel raping adivasis women while deployed to check the menace of the naxalite insurgents. Sixthly, rape is employed as a tactical threat with economic and job interest as seeing in many cases of discrimination and sexual molestation against the north east people in New Delhi. Hence, rape is not just because of lust but it has many factors. Consequences of Rape: When a woman is raped or sexually assaulted by man, it affects the whole humanity of that victim. It brings shame to the victim’s family. This force many mothers to restrict the movement of their daughters. In other words, women should not have freedom equivalent to that of men’s. As women are considered ‘keepers of sexual morality’ by our society, the one who perpetrates the act is often protected and the victim is blamed. Rape that is committed to a single individual affect the mentality of women as a group. Women are kept in dread of men and they seek protection from men who are also their oppressors. Rape is tantamount to slow murder especially when the act is committed by a HIV/AIDS positive without using any protective gears. The rape victims are vulnerable to many STDs too. We must raise our voice together and fight against this menace. However, Naga people have very strong not-in-my-backyard mentality towards any issue. Many rape cases are reported against our sisters from New Delhi or Bangalore, etc, but we did not raise our voice rather we kept mum till it happened in our own state. Unless some serious problems affect one’s family, or close relative or tribe, we never protest. Rape is not a ‘private matter’ but it is a social issue that affect the whole community. It is a crime against humanity. Protest to Rape Cases: People
react to rape incidents in different ways. In deeper analysis, the reaction to rape incidents is connected to caste, ethnicity and patriarchy with economic, political and religious interest. This means that all reactions to rape cases are not because of love and to get justice for the raped victim. Many people join the protest to get economic mileage. For instance, in metropolitan cities (like Dimapur and Imphal), when rape in committed by a particular ethnic or religious group, other ethnic/religious group (with hidden agenda) may take advantage of the situation to punish and threaten the whole ethnic/religious group of the perpetrator. By creating fear and insecurity to perpetrator’s community, the other group/s gets benefit in terms of employment and business especially in today’s fierce economic competition. Rape incident is also employed to flare up communal and religious tension. Sometimes, politicians also used rape incident to criticise the ruling government or topple the government in the name of restoring law and order. Again, in caste ridden Hindu society, when a dalit or shudras woman is raped by upper caste man, the lower caste people protest and fight together for justice. Here rape is considered as an issue of caste discrimination. But when a dalit woman is raped by dalit man, the matter is considered to be a ‘private issue’ and the culprit is usually let loose with little or no punishment. This shows that if a woman is raped by one’s own relative or tribe, the matter is not as serious as the act committed by outsiders. Even in Naga society, the seriousness of rape penalty depends on the status of the victim. If the raped victim is from dominant and powerful tribe, the case is pursued seriously than
for a woman who belongs to a less significant tribe. The severity of rape punishment can also be determined by educational and economic status so that the punishment of raping a domestic servant is different from that of a hi-fi woman. In many Naga villages, the perpetrator of rape is set free with little or no penalty in the name of compromise. Many a time, when rape is committed, man-made (not human) society considers it as attacking the prestige of the victim’s clan or tribe and hence harsh reprisal followed. Therefore there is different punishment for the same crime – rape. The above discussion clearly shows that not all those who protest against rape are not doing solely to bring justice to the raped victim or to secure the rights of women but for their own interest. What Must We Do? With more liberated women coming out to the open space (man’s traditional space) leaving behind traditional beliefs and roles, one can expect back-lash from men. Sexual discrimination will be on the increase as men want their status quo of domination and women fighting for equal freedom. With the states actively pursuing economic growth through tourism development, another great platform is opened for sexual discrimination. Tourism enhances sex industry. For instance, there are 10,000 children fathered by Korean men tourists with prostituted Filipino women often known as “Kopino.” Dislocation from villages and urbanisation will also lead to more sexual discrimination similar to the situation of Thai rural women. Today we feel angry of one incident of rape. Tomorrow such case may multiply by tenfold. It is high time for us to get ready to meet any such eventuality in the near future. Killing one person is not the solution to rape. Peo-
ple should not take law in their own hand. Blaming and suspending the district administrators will not solve the problem at this juncture. What we need today is to come together and critically examine the ideological role of patriarchy, caste, ethnicity, consumerism and global market forces that encourage, sustain and justify sexual discrimination. We also need to carefully examine the ‘interest’ of different people’s group who stand to protest against rape. Any ‘misdirected protest’ can lead to vicious cycle of violence and loss of life. The State as ‘guardian of all its citizen’ must work hand in hand with churches, civil organisations (NSF, Naga Hoho, NMA, etc), NGOs, intellectuals, activists, law makers and frame stringent law to deal with sexual discrimination in general and rape cases in particular. Apart from strengthening the State machinery, the religious and educational institutions must take initiative to create awareness among all section of people’s groups about human dignity be it woman or man, young or old, black or white, rich or poor. NBCC may consider Dimapur as an important mission field and invest financial and human resources through NMM. Above all, it’s high time for the nearly fifty theological institutions in Nagaland to seriously re-examine what kind of Christian ministers we are producing today. In this, Nagaland Theological Colleges Association (NTCA) needs to play a prophetic and larger role in responding to various societal and religious problems of our society. In a state like ours, when all the highly theologically trained persons keep mum, the society will turn from bad to worse. If we do not take concrete step now, the future looks bleak. Z.K. We have exclusively learnt that composer Jeet Ganguly, for Vikram Bhatt’s upcoming film Mr. X, starring Emraan Hashmi, has composed a song called You Can Call Me X for which Mahesh Bhatt has lent his voice. We learnt that at the time when Jeet made Bhatt sahab listen to the song first, he kept alternating between the girl’s voice and the boy’s voice to make Bhatt sahab understand which part would be sung by the girl and what part by the boy. Bhatt sahab loves singing and volunteered to sing the male part for him, but Jeet liked it so much that he decided to keep it in the final song. Talking about his singing debut to us, Bhatt sahab said, “My voice is as old as music is.” Usually, daughters follow in their father’s steps. But Mahesh Bhatt is a different father. And he seems to be following in Alia’s footsteps as far as singing goes.

he mother of the ‘We Can’t Stop’ hitmaker’s boyfriend Patrick Schwarzenegger is reportedly finally on board with their relationship and has “warmed up” to the idea of Miley and Patrick. A source shared: “Maria is a very hard egg to crack. But now she sees that the relationship isn’t just a passing fad or phase, so she has warmed up quite a bit and is starting to respect Miley as a person. “Patrick has really shown that he hasn’t changed by being with Miley and Maria is very happy with that. Maria just doesn’t want her son to get his
heart broken but it looks like everyone is in a good place right now.” This is surely good news for the couple as they are reportedly getting “more serious”, with the pair even discussing marriage. Another insider told HollywoodLife.com: “They are not engaged, she would say yes if he asked. “They have talked about it, but they are going to continue being a couple without the officialness of engagement or marriage for a while.” The couple are said to be even testing the water with friends by telling them they have gotten engaged.
Gul Panag’s new TV show depicts triumph of human spirit
A
ctress Gul Panag, who will be seen hosting reality adventure show “Kingfisher Blue Mile - Mission Mount Everest”, says it “depicts triumph of the human spirit”, and has been shot extensively in a unique yet effective way. The show will witness a team of nine adventurers who will trek to the base camp of the highest mountain in the world -- Mount Everest. Selected through a series of adventure laden campouts from all across the country, these contestants will push their limits to trek to the Mount Everest base camp. “It’s not just a show as it showcases a journey that has been captured on camera. It’s a trek to the base camp of world’s highest mountain -- Mount Everest. The show has not been shot like other usual ones,” Gul told IANS over phone from Mumbai. “We have seen shows that have witnessed people climb the Everest, but they were mainly professionals. Also climbing it is not the same thing as trekking towards its base camp. “‘Kingfisher Blue Mile’ is about giving a chance to common people from various parts of the country and they are not specialised climbers. It depicts tri-
umph of the human spirit. Viewers will get a visual treat,” she added. The 36-year-old, who herself is an adventure junkie, will anchor the show and will help contestants throughout their journey along with the mentors -- world record holding mountaineer twins Tashi and Nungshi Malik, who are the first twins and siblings to climb Seven Summits. Asked what’s her favourite adventure sport and spot, Gul said: “I’m very partial to paragliding. It makes me feel free and smile in the air. And Ladakh has been my favourite adventure destination. “I recently filmed a documentary for Discovery Channel in Ladakh. It chronicles my journey with a friend of mine in a customised SUV to Ladakh.” “Kingfisher Blue Mile Mission Mount Everest” will be aired on NDTV Good Times starting Saturday.

aucKLaND, march 14 (rEuTErS): World champions India extended their unbeaten record at the cricket World Cup on Saturday with a six-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in their final group match before a noisy crowd of predominantly Indian supporters. Suresh Raina (110) and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (85) combined in an unbeaten fifth wicket partnership of 196 at Eden Park to give their team a sixth successive victory in the tournament. The win had no influence on the group standings as India were assured of top place in Pool B regardless of the result while Zimbabwe had already been eliminated. Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor was the day's individual hero, celebrating his last international before taking up an English county contract by scoring 138 in his team's 287 all out from 48.5 overs. Taylor reached his eighth one-day international hundred, a Zimbabwe record, with a ramp shot off Mohammed Shami which steered the ball over third man for a six. He was also the first Zimbabwe batsman to score consecutive centuries in a World Cup. The Zimbabwe skipper then struck three fours and two sixes off an over from left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja to become the second-highest run scorer in the tournament before he was caught off Mohit Sharma. Taylor added 93 for the fourth wicket with Sean Williams (50) who hoisted three sixes to leg off Ravichandran Ashwin before the off-spinner took his revenge by holding a sharp caught-andbowled chance. Opening bowler Tinashe Panyangara rocked the Indians by capturing the wickets of openers Rohit Sharma (16) and Shikhar Dhawan (4) in the same over. Ajinkya Rahane (19) played some handsome drives before he India's Suresh Raina waves his bat after scoring a century while batting was run out trying to regain his against Zimbabwe during their Cricket World Cup Pool B match in Auckland, crease after a misunderstanding with his partner Virat Kholi. were in trouble when Kholi was bowled around his legs for 38 trying to sweep off-spinner Sikandar Raza before Raina found his timing to hit Williams's left-arm spin into the crowd from successive deliveries. Raina hit a huge six into over wide long-on while Dhoni hit hard and ran harder as the pair brought up their ninth century partnership in one-day internationals. The Zimbabwe fielding began to falter and the bowling became more erratic and Raina completed his first World Cup century and his fifth in one-day internationals from 94 balls. Dhoni secured the victory with eight balls to spare by hooking a six.
Dropping Raina's catch was turning point: Taylor
Zimbabwean stand-in skipper Brendan Taylor on Saturday rued dropping the catch of Suresh Raina, as it turned out to be the game changer against India in their last World Cup Pool B game at the Eden Park here. “It was crucial drop catch there,” Taylor said referring to Raina’s catch spilled by Hamilton Masakadza. Raina was batting on 47 when he was dropped by Masakadza in the last ball of the 34th over of the Indian innings. It was off a Sikandar Raza delivery which the former miscued playing a sweep shot. The 29-year-old said the platform was set to post a total in excess of 300 runs but added he was happy with the score after 50 overs. “After 50 overs I would have taken 280, but the last four-five overs we should have got it up to 310-320,” he said. Taylor, for whom it was the last match in Zimbabwean colours, said it is special to get two consecutive hundreds and added it was a journey that he had thoroughly enjoyed. “Always special to get two back to back hundreds in the World Cup. It would have been much sweeter if we would have gone over the line but it’s been a joyful ride, one which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed,” concluded the veteran batsman who has signed a three-year deal with English county club Nottinghamshire. Starc stars as Australia pummel Scots
hobarT, march 14 (aFp): Mitchell Starc continued his impressive World Cup campaign with a four-wicket haul as Australia overpowered Scotland by seven wickets in Hobart on Saturday. Left-arm paceman Starc took four for 14 in 4.4 overs as Scotland, in their last Pool A match of this tournament, collapsed to 130 all out in barely half their alloted overs after losing the toss at Bellerive Oval. There were five ducks in the innings, with fast bowler Pat Cummins, recalled in place of dropped spinner Xavier Doherty, taking three for 42 in seven overs. Matt Machan, who plays for English county side Sussex, topscored with 40 and Calum MacLeod made 22 but at 79 for seven there was a real chance Scotland would be dismissed for under 100. However, bold hitting from the ninth-wicket duo of Josh Davey
(26) and Michael Leask (23 not out) took the non-test side to three figures. Australia captain Michael Clarke – passed fit after missing training in midweek to rest his hamstring injury – then decided to give himself some batting practice ahead of the quarterfinal in Adelaide on March 20 by making a runa-ball 47 opening the innings. There was a worrying moment for Australia, when with 39 still needed for victory, rain stopped play. But when the match resumed, new batsman David Warner – usually an opener - settled Australia's nerves with a straight six and a four off the first two balls he faced. Warner finished on 21 not out, off just six balls, while James Faulkner (16 not out) ended the match with a six as Australia finished on 133 for three in 15.2 overs. Scotland have still to win a
World Cup match, having now taken part in three editions – a run of 14 games – and all four of their previous one-day internationals against Australia had ended in thumping defeats – by six wickets in 1999, 203 runs in 2007, 189 runs in 2005 and 200 runs in 2013. Opener Kyle Coetzer – who made 253 runs in Scotland's first four matches of this tournament – fell for nought, his second successive duck, when his flat-footed drive off Starc was caught by Steven Smith at third slip. Wickets fell in clusters and 36 for two became 37 for three when Scotland captain Preston Mommsen fell for a second-ball duck when he mishooked a Shane Watson bouncer to Starc at deep backward square leg. Then 50 for four was soon transformed into 51 for five when offspinner Glenn Maxwell struck first ball, Richie Ber-
rington chipping tamely to cover. Left-hander Machan's enterprising 35-ball innings, including six fours, ended when he turned a short ball from Cummins to James Faulkner at long leg. Scotland were 130 for eight off 25 overs when rain fell and their innings was finished four balls after the resumption, with Davey and Iain Wardlaw (nought) both undone by Starc yorkers. Australia lost Aaron Finch early in their chase before Clarke and Watson (24) put on 58 for the second wicket. Watson became Davey's 15th wicket of the World Cup when he top-edged a sweep and was caught by wicketkeeper Matthew Cross. Clarke's quickfire innings, including seven fours and two sixes, came to end when a pull off Wardlaw was brilliantly caught by the diving Leask, running round the boundary.

He has eight triple-doubles this season and 16 in his career. Enes Kanter had 23 points and 15 rebounds, and Dion Waiters and Mitch McGary added 12 points apiece for the Thunder. In Phoenix, Paul Millsap scored 23 points and Kyle Korver added 14 points for the Eastern Conference-leading Hawks. Phoenix led by 11 points in the third quarter and were up 73-65 entering the fourth, but Millsap and Korver each sank two 3s and Kent Bazemore one in the Hawks' late surge, when they went 5 for 6. Atlanta outscored Phoenix 31-14 in the fourth quarter. Kenneth Faried had 24 points and 17 rebounds and Randy Foye hit three crucial 3-pointers to lead Denver past Golden State, which rested several of its top players, including Stephen Curry. The Nuggets pulled off an impressive double this week — beating Atlanta on Wednesday and now the Warriors, who are on top in the Western Conference. Denver also improved to 5-2 since inter-
im coach Melvin Hunt took over for Brian Shaw. Golden State coach Steve Kerr gave Curry, Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala and Andrew Bogut the night off because the team plays Saturday at home. In Toronto, Kyle Lowry had 19 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals to lead the Raptors, who ended a 16-game skid against the Heat. Their previous victory over Miami was a 111-103 home win on Jan. 27, 2010. Injured Miami forward Chris Bosh had 24 points and 18 rebounds for the Raptors in that game. In Dallas, Chandler Parsons scored 22 points and Tyson Chandler had 14 points and 12 rebounds for his 26th double-double for the Mavericks, who pulled within a half-game of the fifth-place Clippers after starting the day in seventh place in the tightly packed Western Conference. In other games, Portland's Damian Lillard had 28 points, including five 3-pointers, and LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 points as the Trail Blazers cruised past the Detroit Pistons 118-99. It was Detroit's ninth straight loss. Boston overcame an 11-point deficit to beat Orlando 95-88 for its fifth win in the last six games. Evan Turner scored 16 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter. Charlotte got 20 points from Gerald Henderson and 18 from Mo Williams to overcome a 19-point, first-half deficit and defeat Chicago 101-91. In Philadelphia, Robert Covington scored 24 points and the 76ers rallied from 18 points down in the third to beat Sacramento 114-107.
