Noke group for ‘amicable reconciliation’ of NPF

DimaPUr, march 29 (mExN): Following the March 27 order of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to the divided NPF parties to resolve the issue based on their party constitution, the NPF group led by Noke Wangnao and G Kaito Aye today unanimously resolved not to take any action that will “jeopardise the process of unity and reconciliation within the party.” In a press release, the Noke-Kaito NPF group maintained they had made it clear on several occasions that “they are all for party unity and amicable reconciliation of the party in the greater interest of the party and the people of Nagaland.” “We have made appeals, issued statements and extended the olive

branch to all sections of the party, which has been taken note of and acknowledged by the ECI,” the release maintained adding “Our stand continues to remain the same and we want to make it clear to all sections of Naga society that we are open for reconciliation and party unity for the greater interest of all sections.” On the matter of general convention as suggested by the ECI, the NPF under Noke and Kaito espoused full confidence that they have the overwhelming majority support of the party organisation from the grass roots to the top leadership. “We have the overwhelming support of the majority of divisions, assembly constituencies, working committee, CEC and

grass root workers of the party at all levels,” the release claimed. Also taking reference to the para 7 ECI findings, the release said the ECI has acknowledged the overwhelming majority of the Noke group. Citing reasons, it maintained that firstly, the ECI did not recognize the suspension order served by Dr Shurhozelie on 9 MLAs and secondly, it acknowledged that the Noke group has 20 MLAs and Shuhozelie and TR’s camp have only 16 MLAs. “This means those MLAs who signed in favour of both sides are not counted and described as vacillating, which means they are inconsistent, unpredictable and wavering and hence the majority,” the release contended.

DimaPUr, march 28 (mExN): Following the sudden abrogation of the 14 year old ceasefire with the Government of India (GoI), NSCN (K) in another move expelled Kilonser Wangtin Naga and Kilonser P. Tikhak from both party and government with immediate effect. Informing this in a press note released to the media on Saturday, MIP in-charge, NSCN (K) said Wangtin Naga, who is the supervisor of the Cease-fire Supervisory Board (CFSB) and Tikhak, another senior functionary, were “found culpable of anti-government, anti-national and anti-people’s conduct.” The NSCN (K) has established “beyond doubt numerous instances of hatching conspiracies with India to destabilize the Naga cause,” the MIP release stated. The expelling of the two senior functionaries came right after a CFSB meeting was held with the Government of India (GoI) at Chumukedima, Dimapur. The MIP further clarified that any statements issued by the two expelled Kilonsers pertaining to ceasefire issues between NSCN (K) and India is rendered null and void. The statement in question pertains to the announcement made by Wangtin Naga on Friday to media person that NSCN (K) ceasefire with the GoI will continue. A senior functionary of the NSCN (K) who did not wish to be named said all members of the CFSB were notified prior to the recently held ceasefire review meeting by the president and chairman SS Khaplang to desist from attending such meetings. “It is not a matter of miscommunication or confusion; we had already informed all our members loud and clear prior to the

Khaplang has no authority to withdraw ceasefire: Wangtin

DimaPUr, march 29 (mExN): NSCN (K) chairman SS Khaplang and senior functionaries Y Wangtin Naga and P. Tikhak have expressed differing stance on the ceasefire with the Government of India. Against the back drop of the NSCN (K) top leader Khaplang abrogating the 14 year old ceasefire with the GoI and simultaneously expelling Wangtin Naga, who is the supervisor of the CFSB and senior functionary P. Tikhak, an emergency meeting was convened at the CFSB office, HQ-Mon on Saturday. The meeting attended by a host of senior kilonsers, deputy kilonsers, CCM, central secretaries, army officers and regional authorities unanimously resolved to disapprove the unilateral decision of Khaplang to abrogate the ceasefire, a press release received from the two senior functionaries Wangtin and Tikhak said. Stating that “Khaplang has no authority to withdraw the ceasefire from the Indian side while he keeps enjoying ceasefire with the Union of Myanmar,” Wangtin and Tikhak said, “He (Khapmeeting. But they knowingly attended the meeting while knowing the repercussions,” the senior functionary said when contacted. On the abrogation of the ceasefire, the NSCN (K) in a press release which The Morung Express received on Saturday morning said the 14 years of ceasefire between NSCN (K) and India has become a “mockery and futile exercise.” “The shallow commitment and politics of deceit has become a hallmark tradition of India to engage in peace and political discourses. It is pre-requisite for the two entities to recognise the sovereign existence of the Nagas as people and Nation,” the release

lang) never consulted his council of kilonsers and his Army officers before taking such a drastic step.” Also blaming the attack on the security forces during the ceasefire period and other Naga political groups on the “Khaplang boys,” the release said, “violence has never served a good purpose and the Naga political problem can only be resolved through peace and negotiation and not military intervention.” “It is not war, but peace and conducive atmosphere that is of paramount importance for all the Nagas at this hour to resolve all outstanding issues with the GoI.” In light of these matters, the house while disapproving Khaplang’s unilateral decision, decided to “continue the ceasefire with the GoI under the leadership of senior kilonser Y Wangtin Naga and P. Tkihak in order to promote peace and reconciliation among the Naga family.” More meetings among the national workers from different regions of Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh will be held in the next couple of days, the release further informed.

maintained. It asserted that the sovereignty of all Naga indigenous area and its inhabitants was not subject to negotiation nor can it be relegated to mere ceasefire proceedings. “The NSCN (K) led by its chairman and president along with top functionaries reviewed the overall scenario and collectively resolved to abrogate the armistice with India so as to pave a way for radicalised and practical course of struggle to oust militarized political ascendency of India over the Nagas for more than 60 years.” The senior functionary from the NSCN (K) added, “14 years has been too long

Pongba (name changed) is only five but narrates his life before 2014 with precision. “I used to live on the rail tracks (in Dimapur). We would go to Murgipatti at night and collect waste to eat,” he says in Nagamese, referring to his friends and him. Why did you go only at night, someone asks. “We felt ashamed to go in the daytime,” replies the prompt Pongba. The whereabouts of his parents are unknown, and Pongba now lives under the care of a children’s home in Dimapur called the Love Care Home (LCH). The story of the unknown number of orphaned children in Nagaland merely starts from here. At LCH, some of these stories come pouring out alongside tears. Yari (name changed) was four by when her parents were no more. A relative would keep her shut in a room all day, in isolation, and then beat her up for urinating or passing stool in the room without a toilet. Now 12, she begins to cry as she bravely stands up to share her story. Someone in the neighbourhood intervened and brought her to LCH. Then there is John (name changed) whose drunken relatives, who brought him to LCH, never call or come to meet him. At the age of eight, he is a fan of cricket with a knack for bowling, he softly reveals. Lemba (name changed) is 15, one of the oldest, and was brought to LCH five years back with myriad illnesses and medicines. NK Keny, their legal guardian and the woman who runs the LCH, made him switch to local medication made out

five years of age. Some have lived with her for more than 12 years. Keny does not give her children away for adoption. She works with miniscule funds, yet tries to send all the children at the LCH to school. Albeit small, help always comes to their doorstep through friends and well wishers. “Through prayers,” she affirms. “From there, we manage. First 10% is left aside as tithe, and 3% is distributed among the children for shopping for essential items. Once items are here, we assign duties. For example, one child has the duty of squeezing out an equal amount of toothpaste to all the children every morning. This is how we get by,” she smiles, with the children in tow. With limited resources, they tend to a garden and knit little dolls to enhance other skills. But life is not easy without systematic funding. Water, for instance, is a perennial issue. Keny managed to get a well dug on the LCH compound some years back that provides muddy water. The water is purified using two old basic sand-andcharcoal purifiers, boiled and consumed. Then there is the problem of affording private tuition for the children who reach higher grades. When medical conditions arise, so does a financial crisis. Keny admits as much. After they complete their Class 10, she finds the closest relative and sends the children to them. “Even they cry, even I cry,” she says, as they all rise up in prayer to end their day. Congress demands CBI probe into chit fund groups in Tripura agartala, MarcH 28 (ianS): The Congress on Saturday demanded a CBI probe into the activities of all illegal non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and chit fund organisations in Tripura. The Congress alleged that the ruling CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) leaders and members were involved in the activities of chit fund groups, an accusation which was strongly refuted by the Left party. The party made the demand after its leaders met Tripura Governor P.B. Acharya on Saturday. "We have urged the governor to request the central

government to depute the CBI to inquire into all aspects of the activities of illegal NBFCs and chit fund organisations in Tripura," opposition leader Sudip Roy Barman told reporters. He said: "The Central Bureau of Investigation has so far taken up very few cases filed against the chit fund organisations. We want the CBI to probe all aspects of their activities and involvement of high profile persons." "Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and several CPI-M leaders had on a number of occasions attended the functions of chit fund organisations," he added. On Friday, the Congress

IPF holds roundtable discussion on building awareness to its demands

released a booklet showing government documents and photographs about the activities of the unauthorised NBFCs and chit fund groups. The party has also announced that it would soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request him to direct the CBI to probe the fraudulent activities of chit fund companies in Tripura. "If the central government did not accept our demand, we would organise sit-in demonstrations in New Delhi," Barman said. "The Tripura government is not taking effective steps against illegal chit fund companies and NBFCs which have been collect-

ing crores of rupees from the market," the Congress leader said. Refuting the Congress' allegations, CPI-M state secretary Bijan Dhar said Tripura's Left Front government was the first in India to enact laws to curb the unlawful activities of the chit fund companies and NBFCs and repeatedly asked the CBI to investigate their activities. "The Congress has no issue and they are playing an old record just to misguide the people," Dhar, also a CPI-M central committee member, told reporters. The Tripura High Court last week asked the state government to set up a

Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the activities of illegal NBFCs and chit fund organisations. In 2013, the Tripura government referred 37 cases relating to chit fund companies and NBFCs to the CBI. The central probe agency, however, has taken up only five cases. Unauthorised chit fund companies and NBFCs have mushroomed in the northeastern region in recent years. They lure depositors by promising exceptionally hefty rates of interest ranging from 25 percent to 30 percent. After collecting the money, they quietly end their operations and vanish.

ing a platform to local designers and popularize indigenous handloom designs. Self-help groups from across the state showcased a variety of hand-made products including colorful traditional attires, bags and household products. A photo-exhibition was also organized as a part of the event. "This effort is mainly to promote many sectors, especially handloom and textiles, skill development, cultural affairs, tourism of Assam, so that they all can come in one platform and promote Assam in a very positive way and generate interest specially in the youngsters and young entrepreneurs to give exposure of Assam in a global horizon," said Bikram Rai Medhi, Designer. "Through these expos, people from outside come to know about Assam's yarns and our products like eri, muga, pat and nunipat. They get to know that there are such good quality products in Assam and the demand increases," said Swarna Devi, Participant. The northeast region is famous for its weaving and handloom work, that needs to be preserved. Rural artisans do not often find market for their products and such events are highly important to generate awareness about the rich handloom products, besides providing a market for the crafts persons.

nEw DElHi, MarcH 28 (Pti): Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi, who has had a running feud with the Centre and even approached the Supreme Court against attempts to ease him out, was sacked today. A brief statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said that "Qureshi shall cease to hold the office of the Governor of Mizoram." Governor of West Bengal Keshari Nath Tripathi has been asked to discharge the functions of the Mizoram Governor, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements are made, it said. Qureshi, who had a tenure till May 2017, is the second Governor after Kamla Beniwal to be sacked after having been shifted to Mizoram months after the Narendra Modi government assumed office. Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, who was also transferred to Mizoram, had tendered his resignation, refusing to take charge of his new assignment. Qureshi, who was among the Governors ap-

Aziz Qureshi

pointed by the UPA government and was told by the then Home Secretary Anil Goswami to quit after change in Government, approached the Supreme Court against attempts to ease him out. He was then the Uttarakhand Governor. In his petition, Qureshi, a veteran Congress leader, had claimed that after the NDA government came to power, Goswami had called him on July 30 and asked him to tender resignation and made it clear that he will be removed from office if he does not step down. He alleged, in his petition, that Goswami again

called him on August 8 insisting that he resign. Goswami had said in his reply to the Supreme Court that he had, with authority and justification, "suggested" to Qureshi that he should consider resigning on his own since his actions were not "behoving the status of the Governor" and showed the constitutional office in "very poor light" apart from "bringing it into disrespect". After the new Government took over, many governors appointed by the previous UPA regime were eased out which included Beniwal, 87, who had served in Gujarat earlier and had a running battle with Modi when he was the state's chief minister. Virendra Kataria, a former Congress leader, was also sacked as Puducherry lieutenant governor. Four other governors — MK Narayanan (West Bengal), Ashwani Kumar (Nagaland), BL Joshi (UP), Shekhar Dutt (Chhattisgarh) and B V Wanchoo (Goa) had put in their papers apparently after they were telephoned by the Union Home secretary.

Terror kills more in northeast than elsewhere nEw DElHi, MarcH 28 (tnn): Violence in the 106 Naxal-affected districts of the country and militancy in Jammu & Kashmir may hog the limelight, but it's in the northeast that most die in terror attacks. In 2014, due to various terror attacks while 193 people died in Kashmir and 372 in Naxal areas, 413 died in the northeast. Assam is the worst sufferer of human casualties in terror attacks among all Indian states. Comparatively, communal violence which has been a major concern in the past couple of years has claimed 95 lives. Notably, some of India's best security resources remain invested in these regions. Sustained effort by various governments at the Centre both on socio-economic and security front have brought down violence in left wing extremism (LWE) areas and

Kashmir has remained comparatively peaceful in recent years. It's only the northeast where deaths in insurgent violence continues unabated. "The focus on the northeast, though emphasized by this government, has been far behind both the emotional and physical investments the Centre has made in LWE and J&K over the years. It took massacre of over 80 people in Assam last year for government to launch an offensive against cadres of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbjit) or NDFB(S). In a matter of weeks the outfit has been significantly weakened. No one is asking what stopped the government from doing so earlier," said a security establishment officer dealing with the region. In 2014, Assam accounted for 168 deaths in 246 insurgency incidents. As many as 144 of these deaths were

at the hands of NDFB(S) cadres. In 2013 too, the outfit claimed maximum lives in Assam. Of the 40 deaths recorded due to insurgency in the state in 2013, 16 were in NDFB (S) attacks. Comparatively United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) claimed just three lives while Karbi People's Liberation Tigers (KPLT) killed 12. According to government data, in the last three years (up to February 28, 2015) insurgent outfits in Assam have killed 242 people including 14 security personnel. "Unlike J&K where our neighbour is constantly pushing in terrorists, we have a friend in Bangladesh on the northeast side. However, the region is far more complicated than both J&K and LWE areas. Still, we must leverage our advantages in the form of friends in the neighbourhood to weaken these groups further," said the official.

Number of rhinos in Assam's Kaziranga up, says census guwaHati, MarcH 28 (ianS): The number of world famous one-horned rhinos in Assam's Kaziranga National Park has increased to over 2,400, according to a latest census released on Saturday. mumbai, march 28 (rEuTErS): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed to lower the ceiling on how much a bank can lend to a single corporate group, in a move to curb risks in the banking sector at a time when bad loans are on the rise. Under the proposal, banks would only be allowed to lend up to 25 percent of their core capital, down from the earlier ceiling of up to 55 percent, starting Jan. 1, 2019. The central bank also said late on Friday it would consider setting a minimum percentage of capital requirements that companies must raise from corporate bond and com-

mercial paper markets, saying the corporate sector had become too dependent on banks for their financial needs. The RBI requested feedback on its proposals by April 30. The central bank regularly issues discussion papers on proposals, which are not final measures. The RBI had said earlier that it planned to review the lending cap to companies to gradually align it with a 25 percent ceiling set by global standard-setter Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. Analysts have said in the past that this was more of a prudential measure, as banks typically do not breach current caps.

India finally ready for in-flight Wi-Fi NEw DElhi, march 28 (agENciES): The Indian government appears to be finally warming to the idea of in-flight Wi-Fi. Several years after other airlines started rolling out the service, India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation is reported to have approached the country’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to discuss in-flight Wi-Fi. The Economic Times cited an unnamed

“senior official” from the ministry as saying that a formal announcement is expected soon. “The DoT has already said the proposal is possible to implement,” the official told the newspaper. Both Vistara and SpiceJet have expressed an interest in providing in-flight Wi-Fi services. At present, only international airlines like Emirates offer in-flight Wi-Fi in India.

Google will pay 70 mln dollars to its new CFO waShiNgToN, march 28 (aNi): Google has reportedly agreed to pay its new CFO, Ruth Porat, about 70 million dollars in total compensation by 2019. An SEC filing revealed on Thursday that the package would include a five million dollar signing bonus, a 25 million dollar new hire grant that begins vesting at the end of this year and a 40 million dollar biennial grant beginning in 2016, reported Mashable. Her base salary at Google would be 650,000 dollars, the filing disclosed. Porat will also get 7,500 dollars to re-

locate to Google's Mountain View headquarters. The news came after Google announced earlier this week that it is hiring Porat from Morgan Stanley, where she held the same title and was touted to be a "tireless worker." She would replace Patrick Pichette , a longtime Google executive, who retired with a candid memo about work/life balance. The compensation offered by Google represents a lucrative raise for Porat, who received 12 million dollars in total from Morgan Stanley in 2013.

Primary teachers in Dimapur Dialogue is the only way forward to sustain peace: Bishop demand regularization of posts Dimapur, march 28 (mExN): Five members of the Dimapur District Adhoc Fixed Teachers Association (DDAFTA) have expressed their grievances regarding non-regularization of their posts. The government primary teachers, who were appointed on adhoc basis lamented that they have been drawing a fixed salary of Rs. 6700/per month for last four years. In a letter to the director of school education, the members informed they were appointed in the year 2010 and 2011. And, as per the requirement set by the Department, the teachers

had completed their D.Ed courses and all necessary trainings within two years of appointment for the regularization. Stating that so far they have not been intimated regarding regularization of their posts, the teachers questioned when they will be regularized. “When teachers are sacrificing and teaching the future generation it is indeed ironic that we the teachers are deprived of our rights,” stated the letter appended by Amos, Lucy, Moala, Thungdemo, and Aienla. “We the teachers have been faithfully teaching the student in spite of our grievances. When even

the fourth grade fixed pay are more than ten thousand per month it is indeed unimaginable that the Directorate does not seem to care for the teachers who are committed and at the same time barely able to make their ends meet.” The teachers further added, “With the rise of market prices and when essential commodities are sky rocketing normal living condition is becoming beyond manageable with such meagre earning.” The letter requested the Directorate of Education to look into the matter and regularize the posts at the earliest.

esus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible"(Matthew 19:21-26). Jesus wants undivided loyalty and full-hearted obedience. This young man could not face that. He was willing to discipline himself to observe all the outward stipulations and even perform extra works; but because of his wealth, he had a divided heart. His money was competing with God; and what Jesus everywhere demands as a condition for eternal life is the surrender of self. Jesus is not saying that all poor people and none of the wealthy enter the kingdom of heaven. That would exclude Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to say nothing of David, Solomon, and Joseph of Arimathea. Most Jews expected the rich to inherit eternal life, not because their wealth could buy their way in, but because their wealth testified to the blessing of the Lord on their lives. Their opinion was that being favoured with wealth on earth means a guaranteed entry into heaven. Jesus' view is different and more sobering. The disciples, reflecting the common Jewish view of the rich, are astonished and ask that if rich people, blessed of God, cannot be saved, then who can be? Jesus agrees: "With man this [the salvation of anyone] is impossible, but with God all things are possible" “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager

for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:9&10). “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share” (1 Timothy 6:17&18). In this passage Paul corrects those who desire to be rich for selfish reasons. He condemns mammon worship. This is why he says, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” It is not money itself that is evil but the love of money. The problem is not a matter of you

having money but of money having you. In verse 17&18 Paul addresses the rich. Interestingly he does not command them to give away everything and live in poverty. Instead he tells them not to become arrogant or deceived into trusting something as unreliable as money. They are encouraged to put their trust in God. He is the One who has given the riches. Paul does not make any remark to make affluent feel guilty for having riches. Instead he encourages them to use the money wisely, to be generous and share with others. Churches have been built and many evangelists and missionaries are sent out. This is possible because believers had money and resources and they willingly obeyed God by passing along the blessings they had received. To prevent people from being blessed by God financially is to hinder the gospel. The purpose of financial prosperity in these end times is, like never before in church history. It is urgently necessary to provide the means for spreading the gospel to every person on earth. The gospel must be spread to every land and nation, to people of every culture and language! And this requires financial means! Don’t be deceived by preachers who claim that God is instantly going to removes all your personal problems, financial difficulties and debts. They will ask for donations, beautifully wrapped as planting “the seed” for future “financial harvest.” Most tele-evangelists who preach prosperity doctrines on TV are millionaires and living in luxury. They would convince you with their oratory skills that your donation will come back to you ten-fold or even a hundred-fold. Beware of this trap of greed. Which is more valuable to you, perishable material blessings or spiritual blessing? God is not operating a high interest return banking institution. Ask God for your daily needs, his provisions never runs out and he will provide you. Ask him to bless you spiritually use you as an instrument for the extension of his kingdom. Put your whole hope and trust in him for he knows you, he knows all your needs better than you do.

Stop dressing so tacky for church I

John Blake

f the Rev. John DeBonville could preach a sermon to lift the souls of churchgoers across America, his message would be simple: Stop dressing so tacky for church. DeBonville has heard about the “come as you are” approach to dressing down for Sunday service, but he says the Sabbath is getting too sloppy. When he scans the pews of churches, DeBonville sees rows of people dressed in their Sunday worst. They saunter into church in baggy shorts, flip-flop sandals, tennis shoes and grubby T-shirts. Some even slide into the pews carrying coffee in plastic foam containers as if they’re going to Starbucks. “It’s like some people decided to stop mowing the lawn and then decided to come to church,” says DeBonville, rector at the Church of the Good Shepard in Massachusetts. “No one dresses up for church anymore.” Church leaders like DeBonville have harrumphed about declining dress standards for Sunday service for years, while others say God only cares what’s in someone’s heart. But which side is right? What does the Bible actually say about dressing properly for church? And does Jesus provide fashion advice anywhere? Wasn’t he a homeless, Galilean peasant who wore flip-flops? The answers to these questions are not as easy as they may seem. The Bible sends mixed messages about the concept of wearing your Sunday best. And when pastors, parishioners and religious scholars were asked the same questions, they couldn’t agree, either.

Wearing ties on first dates There was one point on which both sides did agree: People are dressing sloppier everywhere, not just church. Take a trek to the supermarket on Saturday morning and you’re bound to run into a sleepy-eyed woman in slippers and rollers at the checkout counter. Or take a walk outside and you’ll be greeted by teenagers slouching around with their jeans sagging over the butt-cheeks. Even corporate America isn’t immune. Casual Fridays has morphed into casual every day and even tech tycoons like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wear bland T-shirts during public presentations. It’s a sharp departure from another era in America before the 1960s, when people wore suits, dresses and white gloves in public. The Rev. Gerald Durley, a sharp-dressed civil rights activist in Atlanta, recalls taking his future wife, Muriel, on their first date. When he showed up at her house, her father opened the door, looked at him, and took him aside gravely, “Young man can I talk to you for a minute.” “He told me, 'If you’re going to take my daughter out, you can wear one of my ties,'” says Durley, a retired Baptist pastor. Jennifer Fulwiler, who wrote an article for the National Catholic Register titled, “Why Don’t We Dress up Anymore,” says her great-grandfather would put on a coat and tie just to go grocery shopping. The reasons why people stopped dressing up could fill a book. Yet Fulwiler offers one explanation that’s seldom mentioned – lack of gratitude. Fulwiler’s revelation came one day as she watched scruffily dressed people board a plane. She flashed back to a black-and-white photo she had seen of her grandparents boarding a plane in the 1940s. Most of

Remember when people used to dress up for church? Casual Friday has now morphed into Sloppy Sabbath.

the passengers were dressed in suits and ties and dresses because air travel was such a privilege at the time. “We dress up for what we’re grateful for,” she says. “We’re such a wealthy, spoiled culture that we feel like we have a right to fly on airplanes,” says Fulwiler, author of “Something Other than God,” which details her journey from atheism to Christianity. Church is like air travel now – it’s no longer a big deal because people have lost their sense of awe before God, Fulwiler says. Yet some of these same people who say it doesn’t matter how you dress for church would change their tune if they were invited to another event, Fulwiler says. “If you had the opportunity to meet the Queen of England, you wouldn’t show up in at Windsor Castle wearing jeans and a T-shirt,” she says. The church customer is always king Shouldn’t people have that same reverential attitude when they show up at church to meet God, some ask? After all, doesn’t your dress reveal the importance you attach to an occasion? That sentiment, however, is seen as hopelessly old school in many popular megachurches across America. Casual Fridays has morphed into casual Sundays. And many of the popular megachurch pastors are middle-aged men who bound onto the stage each Sunday dressed in skinny jeans, untucked Banana Republic shirts, and backed by in-house Christian rock bands. They’ve perfected a “seekerfriendly” approach to church that gets rid of the old formal worship style with its stuffy dress codes. But there’s a danger in making people too comfortable in their clothes on Sunday morning, says Constance M. Cherry, an international lecturer on worship and a hymn writer. Some churches have embraced a business-oriented “the customer is always right” approach to worship that places individual comfort at the center of Sunday service, says Cherry, author of“Worship Architect: A Blueprint for Designing Culturally Relevant and Biblically Faithful Services.” “Many young people and boomers judge the value of worship service based on personal satisfaction,” Cherry says. “If I get to wear flip-flops to Wal-Mart, then I get to wear flip-flops to church. If I get to carry coffee to work, I get to carry coffee to church. They’re being told that come as you are means that

God wants you to be comfortable.” What the Bible says The Bible says that’s not true – people had to prepare themselves internally and externally for worship. In the Old Testament, Jewish people didn’t just “come as they are” to the temple in Jerusalem. They had to undergo purification rituals and bathe in pools before they could enter the temple, says Cherry, who is also a professor of worship at Indiana Wesleyan University. Both Old and New Testaments suggest that people should not approach God in a casual manner, Cherry says. Psalms 24 urges the faithful to “ascend the hill of the Lord …with clean hands and pure hearts.” When Jesus taught in the synagogues, he also observed the rules and decorum of being in God’s house, Cherry says. Cherry isn’t calling for a restoration of first-century cultural norms, such as women covering their hair in worship, or a rigid dress code. She says churches should meet people where they are, and make even the poorest person feel welcome. She just says that preparation for worship should give less thought to people and more thought to the divine. “There should be some sort of approach to God that will include certain steps to honor the God that is not our buddy but fully The Other,” she says. Others back up Cherry’s call to keep the Sabbath special. Dressing up really makes a difference on Sunday, they say. “It puts you in a different mindset,” says Tiffany Adams, a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who grew up wearing jeans in church. “It actually sets the Sabbath apart from every other day.” And there are still pockets of church culture where no one has to persuade people to look sharp on Sunday. The African-American church is one such place. Many of its members still insist on dressing up on Sunday because of the historical struggles of blacks. Sunday morning was often the only time in the week that a black person could assert their dignity, says Durley, the Atlanta civil rights activist who also is a retired Baptist pastor. “On Sunday morning, when you put on your tie, your shirt and put your palms together and slicked down your hair, you were no longer the hired help, you were a trustee, a deacon or you chaired this board and you dressed accordingly,” Durley says.

What would Jesus wear? There are others, though, who say God cares more about the person’s soul than their style. No one wears a bracelet today asking, “What would Jesus wear.” Clothes just weren’t important to Jesus or the early church, they claim. The early church was anti-hierarchical and adopted a “come as you are” approach to worship, welcoming outcasts and the disenfranchised who often couldn’t dress in fine clothes, says Carl Raschke, a religious studies professor at the University of Denver. Raschke cites Mark 12:38, where Jesus mocks the fine clothes worn by the Pharisees, a group of elite Jewish religious leaders of his day. Others cite James 2:2-4, where the writer of the New Testament book criticizes early Christians for discriminating against poor people visiting the church in dirty clothes and favoring the man “wearing a gold ring and fine clothes.” “Adopting a dress code would not only be suicidal for American Christians who are swimming against the stream of casual secularism, it would be antithetical to what Christianity sees increasingly as its abiding mission – to reach those who are marginalized and ‘don’t fit in,’ ‘’ Raschke says. Some people, though, remain convinced that casual Sundays are getting too sloppy. “The casualness of Sunday church attire has gone too far,” says DeBonville, the pastor of the Massachusetts church. “It’s about respect and honoring God.” When DeBonville looks across the scruffy fashion landscape of America, he sees only one profession that’s holding the line against tacky dress. It’s not the preachers or priests, though. These people belong to another profession whose members aren’t exactly known for respect and honoring God. “The last ones wearing shirt and ties are the politicians,” DeBonville says. Easter is supposed to be about the renewal of hope, but when asked if the spread of sloppy Sabbath can get any worse, DeBonville sounds gloomy. Yoga pants in the pews, pajamas near the altar – will everyone soon start showing up at church dressed like “the Dude” in the film, “The Big Lebowski.” Nothing would surprise DeBonville anymore. “There’s growing casualness everywhere,” he says. “I don’t know if it can get much worse.”

hristians are called to discern truth from err, light from darkness, and right from wrong ... but how? Jeremiah 23:17 offers one answer, "They continually say to those who despise Me, 'The LORD has said, You shall have peace;' And to everyone who walks according to the dictates of his own heart, they say, 'No evil shall come upon you.'" False teachers often don't warn, confront or convict. They offer comfortable messages and a false sense of peace, or they mislead with rules and regulations as found in 1 Timothy 4:2-3—"speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth." Jesus said in Matthew 24:24 that "false Christs and false prophets will appear and deceive many." Deception comes in many forms but centers around false hope or legalism. Not all leaders in experience-oriented movements are false and misleading. Many are sincere and open to the work of the Holy Spirit. God's Word is the foundation on which all truth stands (cf. 1 Tim. 3:15). What is true revival then? Simply stated: a genuine revival is God reviving His people—"Wilt thou not revive us again that thy people may rejoice in thee?" (Ps. 85:6). Repentance is often a mark of true revival as what was reflected in the life of Griffith Jones, who preached during the Welsh revivals of the 18th century: "The tears [of the congregation] began to flow in streams down their cheeks. Soon, they wept openly, and cried out, 'What shall we do to be saved?'" Further, it was not uncommon for people to tremble and weep or shout for joy under the anointed preaching of George Whitefield. Whitefield was the primary evangelist during the Great Awakening that occurred in the mid 1700s. During this time, old grudges and debts were forgiven, morality improved, many were added to the church, and there was a greater sense of the fear of the Lord. Those who use past revivals to in an attempt to validate odd events today perhaps have not truly researched revivals. In reading charismatics and Calvinists, Pentecostals and Puritans, Acts and Azusa, as well as countless biographies of leaders such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, John Wesley, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, Charles Spurgeon and D.L. Moody, and puritans such as Thomas Goodwin, John Bunyan, John Owen and Richard Baxter, nowhere do these leaders encourage the hysteria or the outright weirdness that we sometimes see today. Granted, there were times of strong conviction such as when people held on to trees thinking that they were falling into the abyss of hell during the famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," by Jonathan Edwards. And people did cry out to God, and/or fall on the ground under the strong conviction of sin during the revivals of George Whitefield, John Wesley and Evan Roberts, but this is because sin, righteousness and holiness were preached—"falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you" (1 Cor. 14:25). This is true revival. Perhaps a balanced end to this article is found in an excerpt from Duncan Campbell's book, The Price and Power of Revival: "How is it that while we make such great claims for the power of the gospel, we see so little of the supernatural in operation? Is there any reason why the church today cannot everywhere equal the church at Pentecost? I feel this is a question we ought to face with an open mind and an honest heart. What did the early church have that we do not possess today? Nothing but the Holy Spirit; nothing but the power of God." "Here I would suggest that one of the main secrets of success in the early church lay in the fact that the early believers believed in unction from on high and not entertainment from men ... How did the early church get the people? By publicity projects, by bills, by posters, by parades or by pictures? No! The people were arrested and drawn together and brought into vital relationship with God, not by sounds from men, but by sounds from heaven. ... The early church cried for unction and not for entertainment. Unction is the dire and desperate need of the ministry today." There is a desperate need to preach and proclaim God's Word with genuine power if we are to experience true revival. Without God's authority and power, words are lifeless. Where are those with uncompromising power and authority in the pulpits today? The one thing that all of the great revivals in church history had is the one thing that we often lack—the genuine power of the Holy Spirit. The very thing that we need is the very thing that we are afraid of. Many do not truly want revival because of fear of what it may involve. A few years ago I prayed, "Lord, bring revival to the churches"—I was not ready for the response that followed. I felt impressed with these words: "You don't want revival—it will ruin your schedule, your dignity, your image and your reputation as a person who is 'well-balanced.' Men will weep throughout the congregation. Women will wail because of the travail of their own souls. Young adults will cry like children at the magnitude of their sin. With the strength of My presence, the worship team will cease playing. Time will seem to stand still. You won't be able to preach because of the emotions flooding your own soul. You'll struggle to find words, but only find tears. Even the most dignified and reserved among you will be broken and humbled as little children. The proud and self-righteous will not be able to stand in My presence. The doubter and unbeliever will either run for fear or fall on their knees and worship Me—there can be no middle ground. The church will never be the same again." Shane Idleman is the founder and lead pastor of Westside Christian Fellowship in Lancaster, California, just North of Los Angeles.

Yadav, Bhushan sacked from AAP Panel after a ‘violent’ meet, may take legal recourse

New Delhi, March 28 (iaNS): Less than two months after it stormed to power in the national capital, the AAP virtually split on Saturday after it expelled four dissident leaders, including Prashant Bushan and Yogendra Yadav, from its National Executive in a stormy meet marred by chaos and protests. The duo, who are the founding members of country's youngest political party, reiterated that AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was a "dictator" and said they would approach the court against the "illegal" decision taken at the party's national council meeting. Hours after their ouster, Medha Patkar, a senior leader, announced in Mumbai that she was quitting the party, saying what happened in the meeting in New Delhi was disrespect to senior leaders and did not augur well for the party's future. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was present in the meeting, but left before the crucial voting. The two others who were also sacked were Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha for siding with the rebel duo. The meeting started at 10 a.m. with the supporters of both the camp shouting slogans and holding banners against each other. Yadav also held a protest outside the venue over the denial of entry to "genuine"

members. A national council member told IANS that many shouted slogans in favour of Yadav and Bhushan during the meeting. Many were reportedly forcibly removed from the meet. At the AAP's National Council which was attended by 311 members, a resolution to oust Yadav, Bhushan, Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha was tabled by Kejriwal confidant Manish Sisodia. Two gave their dissent in writing and 54 members expressed no view, he added. AAP national secretary Pankaj Gupta told reporters that 247 members had voted in favour of the proposal of removing the four members, while eight opposed. Delhi legislator Devender Sherawat was also one of the eight. A member who attended the meet told IANS that Kejriwal told the members to "be either with him or with them (Yadav, Bhushan)". A visibly upset Bushan later said: "It is true that we can move the court, Election Commission or call another meeting of the national council. All options are open." "I have been telling him (Kejriwal) this that he has dictatorial tendencies and he must curb them. "I have failed. Instead

AAP draws flak, ridicule from rival parties over current turmoil

of curbing these dictatorial tendencies, he has ruthlessly stifled any opposition," he told reporters. Yadav also said that goons were also present in the meet who beat their supporters. AAP was quick to reject the charges as "baseless" with its leader Sanjay Singh saying that Yadav and Bhushan wanted to gain sympathy. "No violence had taken place. No one was hit or injured," he told media after the meeting. Bhushan, a noted Supreme Court lawyer, claimed the AAP meeting was scripted. "Everything happened there in a planned manner. It seems that everything was scripted." "This is murder of democracy... There was no distinction between mem-

bers and invitees. Manish Sisodia announced they have a petition signed by 160 people... There was no voting, no discussion," said Yadav, a psephologist and co-founder of AAP. Yadav and Bhushan had five demands -- transparency in the AAP, autonomy for local units, a Lokpal probe into graft charges against party members, AAP should come within the ambit of the RTI, and an end to secret ballot during election to key posts. Ever since the AAP came to power in the national capital by winning 67 of its 70 assembly seats, the party has been embroiled in an internal crisis that has pitted Bhushan and Yadav against Kejriwal, the party's best known face. Anand Kumar, a Jawaharlal Nehru University

professor who was also ousted, however said they will not leave the party. Giving his account of the events, he said: "Kejriwal said we caused trouble in the elections, and asked members to decide whether we should be ousted. But they did not let us speak." "We are not out of the party. We will neither leave nor break the party. This is a party of the workers," he said. Medha Patkar quits AAP Meanwhile, Senior leader and anti-Narmada Dam activist Medha Patkar on Saturday said that she has quit the AAP following dissident leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan's expulsion from the party's national executive in Delhi. RS cut short for Land Ordinance New Delhi, March 28 (iaNS): The Rajya Sabha (RS) was on Saturday prorogued by President Pranab Mukherjee, an official statement said, giving the government the scope for repromulgating an ordinance amending the land acquisition act. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday.

A bill to replace the ordinance issued in December was passed by the Lok Sabha in the first half of the winter session. The bill, however, faces a roadblock in the upper house where the government is in a minority. The decision was taken after attempts at talks with the opposition failed to reach any conclusion. Proroguing the RS brings an end to its 234th session which started on

New Delhi, March 28 (iaNS): Appreciating gender behaviour and relations in tribal communities, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said that "there is a lot to learn from them". "The gender behaviour and relations in tribal communities, and the respect and honour accorded to tribal women in their societies holds significant lessons for us. We must also learn from the manner in which the tribal societies have retained, nurtured and developed their contact with nature," he said in statement here. Interacting with a group

of young participants in the 7th Tribal Youth Exchange Programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan, he said that the notion of tribal welfare is not just about development of tribal communities through economic progress but a larger concept of lifestyle that fosters holistic living. The challenge in preparing any policy for tribal upliftment exists even now as the policy makers have to strike the right balance between preservation of tribal identity with their distinct culture and values, while ensuring their access to mainstream education, health care and income

generating opportunities, the president said. Mukherjee also said that the 73rd amendment to the Constitution bestowed special powers to the 'gram sabha' on decision-making and self-governance matters in tribal villages and hamlets. "This has provided an impetus for protection of rights and enhancement of welfare of the tribals. At this point of time, when the country is marching forward in unity, it is absolutely essential that we ensure all segments of society to participate in and benefit from inclusive and equitable growth," he added.

India has highest number of deaths of children under five years of age New Delhi, March 28 (TNN): India accounts for the highest number of deaths of children underfive years of age with 50% of such deaths caused mainly due to malnutrition, a new policy paper has said. The paper, prepared by Forum for Learning and Action with Innovation and Rigour (FLAIR), estimates more than 15 lakh children below five years of age died in India. Flair is a non-government organization engaged in policy research and analysis. A report by Unicef on child mortality also endorses the figure. According to the Unicef report, about half of underfive deaths occur in only five countries: India, Nigeria, Democratic Repub-

lic of the Congo, Pakistan and China. While India accounts for 22% of the total under-five children death worldwide, Nigeria contributes 13%. Lack of basic sanitation in India is seen as a key reason for severe child malnutrition burden. The policy paper suggests states like Kerala, Manipur, Mizoram and Sikkim, where 80% or more of the rural population have access to toilets, have the lowest levels of child malnutrition in India. However, child malnutrition rates are high in states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand where most households are without toilets. "Unhygienic environment combined with high population density creates

a perfect storm for diseases to thrive, and malnutrition to flourish," says Dr Raj Bhandari, advisor-health & nutrition in Flair. Bhandari, who has co-authored the paper, is also technical consultant to Unicef. According to Bhandari, the absence of sanitation exposes children to infectious diseases such as typhoid and diarrhoea, which rob them of their ability to absorb nutrients and make them vulnerable causing comorbidity. Apart from poor sanitation, food and nutrition insecurity, lack of health care and extremely poor conditions of public health including water are considered primary reasons of malnutrition.

hopes, people of Delhi had chosen the government. The promises which AAP and its leaders have made with public, they must fulfil them," Jaitley told reporters in Varanasi. "They should not let this historical opportunity go waste just because of their immature politics." Nalin Kohli, BJP's national spokesperson, said the turmoil in AAP has to do with fight for power. "It is a fight of opportunism," he said. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said it is the people of Delhi who are suffering the most due to the AAP's internal turmoil. "First AAP should set its house in order and start delivering in Delhi. That is our concern, Delhi citizens' concern and Delhi community's concern. And this kind of laundering goes on in open spectacle every day... Then I think Delhi is the biggest sufferer," Singhvi said, adding the allegations and counter allegations by rival factions in AAP are "extremely serious". Another Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said, "I understand that AAP is an experiment. But right now it so happens that the laboratory is on fire. That's all." "The ongoing tussle is the internal affair of the party and they must resolve it so that the people of Delhi don't have to suffer," CPI(M) politburo member and Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury told reporters in Jammu.

February 23, when the budget session of the Lok Sabha was called. Article 123 of the constitution gives the president the power to pass an ordinance - a law brought by the government without parliament's approval - an ordinance cannot be promulgated while both houses are in session. The end of session for the RS means the government can now reissue the ordinance, which was to lapse on April 5.

A lot can be learnt from tribal communities: President

New Delhi, March 28 (PTi): The AAP today drew flak and ridicule over the internal turmoil from rival parties which asked it to put its house in order and deliver on the promises made to people of Delhi without wasting the opportunity with its "immature" politics. Terming the continued tussle within Aam Admi Party(AAP) as a "struggle for power" and "opportunism", the BJP said Delhi will not see any progress in such a situation and those who were elected to power will have to answer public for the same. Congress said the "laboratory of AAP experiment is on fire" and accused AAP Chief and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of demeaning his party and the political class. Taking a dig at AAP, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said it was becoming more like "older parties". The CPI(M) termed the ongoing tussle in AAP as an internal affair of the party but said the rift should not affect the welfare of the people of Delhi who had voted the party to power. Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said that AAP should fulfil the promises it had made to the public during Delhi assembly polls and that people of the city had a lot of expectations when they voted for this government. "With a lot of expectation and high

New Delhi, March 28 (iaNS): The defence ministry on Saturday cleared a proposal for an Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) to be developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) at a meeting cleared a proposal for two AWACS, which will be mounted on Airbus A330s, worth Rs.5,113 crore. Ministry sources said six AWACS will eventually be developed. A proposal for procuring Harpoon missiles for submarines was also

cleared after a change in offset clause. The sources said 22 missiles will be procured for Rs.913 crore. The DAC also cleared a Rs.710 crore proposal for aquiring 1,512 mine ploughs to be mounted on T90 tanks. The plough clears mines ahead of the tank. A request for proposal (RFP) for the project will be issued soon, the sources said. Other projects to get cleared include 220 truck mounted lifting devices, a crane like device to be mounted on heavy mobility vehicles, worth Rs.26 crore, and 30 weapon locating radars for Rs.1,605 crore.

SriNagar, March 28 (iaNS): The personal security guard (PSO) of a senior Jammu and Kashmir minister fled with two rifles on Saturday, prompting police to launch a massive manhunt. A senior police officer told IANS here on Saturday that "Constable Nisar Ahmad Pandit posted as personal security guard with the Minister for Public Works, Syed Altaf Bukhari, has escaped with two AK47 rifles from his duties. "An FIR has been lodged against him and a massive manhunt has begun to nab him," he added.

India launches fourth navigation satellite India moving closer towards joining a select group of nations possessing their own satellite navigation system Venkatachari Jagannathan IANS

India successfully put into orbit its fourth navigation satellite with its own rocket on Saturday evening in copybook style. Exactly at 5.19 p.m., the rocket - Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle - (PSLVC27) standing about 44 metres tall and weighing around 320 tonnes, roared into the bright blue clear evening sky trailing an orange plume. The expendable rocket had a single but important piece of luggage: the 1,425 kg IRNSS-1D. The rocket blasted off from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here, around 80 km from Chennai. For onlookers the rocket resembled an inverted flare/torch with a long handle as it gathered speed amidst the cheers of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) officials and the media team assembled at the rocket port here. PSLV-C27 launch shows India's increasing space capabilities: Prez New Delhi, March 28 (iaNS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday congratulated Indian space agency ISRO for the successful launch of PSLVC27 and said that it showed India's increasing space capabilities. In his message to Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar, the president said: "My heartiest congratulations to you and your entire team for the successful launch of PSLV-C27, carrying the IRNSS-1D.

"The nation is proud of this achievement which has demonstrated, yet again, India's increasing space capabilities. I am very happy to know that this is the fourth in the series of seven satellites of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System." "I understand the IRNSS-1D will provide navigation, tracking and mapping services which will take us closer to setting up our own navigation system," said Mukherje.

the IRNSS-1D around 20 minutes into the flight. Immediately, scientists at the mission control centre were visibly relieved and started clapping happily. Soon after ejection into orbit, the satellite's solar panels were deployed. The satellite's control was taken over by the Mission Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan in Karnataka. The MCF will manage the satellite's orbit raising operations by firing the on-board motors till it is placed in the circular geosynchronous orbit. The system is similar to the global positioning system (GPS) of the US (24 satellites), Glonass of Russia (24 satellites) and Galileo of Europe (27 satellites), China's Beidou (35 satellites). While GPS and Glonass are fully functional global systems, the Chinese and the Japanese systems offer regional coverage and Europe's Galileo is yet to be operational. The IRNSS will provide two types of services - standard positioning service and restricted service. The former is provided to all users and the later is an encrypted service for authorised users. With this success, India moved closer towards joining a select group of nations with its own satellite navigation system.

4,000 fishermen stranded on Indonesian islands JAKARTA, MARch 28 (AP): The number of foreign fishermen stranded on several remote eastern Indonesian islands has spiraled to 4,000, including some revealed in an Associated Press investigation to have been enslaved. Many are migrant workers abandoned by their boat captains after the government passed a moratorium on foreign fishing five months ago, according to the International Organization for Migration, which released the figure Friday. However, others have been trapped on the islands for years, after being dumped by fishing boats or escaping into the jungle. "This is the worst moment in our life right now," one former slave told the AP, which is not releasing the names of the men for their safety. "It is even worse than being in hell. We have to work every day to survive. ... There is no hope for us anymore." The AP reported earlier that slaves — some of them beaten and locked in cages — are forced to fish, and their catch ends up in the supply chains of American supermarkets and restaurants. The migration agency said Friday that the report follows several years of close work with Indonesian authorities to rescue hundreds of fisherman identified as victims of trafficking. Many of the stranded are men from Myanmar

who went to neighboring Thailand in search of work. They were taken by boat to Indonesia, which has some of the world's richest fishing grounds. Others left behind on the islands are Cambodian and a few from the poorer parts of Thailand. Steve Hamilton, IOM's deputy chief of mission in Indonesia, said for every man they've already rescued, many more now need help. With the fishing ban, boats have docked or fled, ditching their crews. "It is reasonable to expect many are victims of trafficking, if not outright slavery," he said. "But for the first time in possibly several years, their feet are touching dry land and there is a real possibility for them to go home, once we and the authorities locate and process them," he said. About a quarter of the men are in Benjina, a town that straddles two islands in the Maluku chain, according to an Indonesian official who recently visited the area. These men, some abandoned five, 10, even 20 years ago, load and unload fish off boats for food and pocket money, or cut and sell logs in the forest of surrounding areas. When the AP showed up, asking the men to share their stories, only a few emerged at first out of fear. Then, more and more filtered in, until a group of around 30 formed. Most squatted or sat on

Religious minorities vulnerable amid IS violence: UN Chief UnITeD nATIOnS, MARch 28 (IAnS): UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon said that religious minorities remain highly vulnerable since the Islamic State (IS) affiliated groups are targeting minorities and attacking religious sites in Libya, a media report said on Saturday. Ban made the remarks at a Security Council open debate on the victims of attacks and abuses on ethnic or religious grounds in the Middle East, saying the main parties in Libya must quickly reach agreement to end conflict to prevent the country "falling in the hands of terrorist groups", Xinhua reported. Also noting the plight of minority communities in Iraq and Syria, Ban said: "We must avoid highlighting differences and reaffirm the values of diversity and peaceful coexistence." "Governments and parties have the primary responsibility for protecting minorities -- but we must engage with partners in civil society, faith leaders and others with influence, including regional and other actors," he added.

France, the Security Council's president for this month, initiated the first ever debate on the topic of situations of minorities in the Middle East following the recent tragic events in which Christians in the Middle East were targeted. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius attended the debate and later warned at a press briefing here that there is a real danger that minorities in the Middle East might "entirely disappear." The French mission said in a document that "it is important for the Security Council and the entire international community to mobilize against the systematic and widespread persecution by IS of ethnic or religious groups and other minorities in an attempt to methodically eradicate the diversity of the social fabric of societies in the Middle East." Last month, the IS group in Libya released a video in which beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians was shown. Besides, there have been reports about the IS group in Syria kidnapping Christian Assyrians from time to time.

In the wake of an AP report on fishermen who were enslaved, on Thursday, March 26, 2015, Thai lawmakers voted unanimously to create tougher penalties for violating the country’s anti-human trafficking law, including the death penalty. But in a Thursday email, Phil Robertson, deputy director of Human Rights Watch’s Asia division said, “The Thailand government has made repeated verbal commitments to get tough with traffickers but every time real follow-up has been lacking.” In the meantime, Thein is one of the thousands of men who are waiting. the ground, others stood around them as they recounted the horrors they had witnessed at sea. Then one after another, they expressed their desperate desire to go home, saying they were sure their families thought they were dead.. "Our body is here but our mind is at home," one dockworker said. "If it was possible to walk back home, we would do it right away." Another wiped tears as

he spoke, his voice quivering. "Our lives have no more value than a dog," he said, adding no one cared if they lived or died. The AP is not using the men's names for their safety. The moratorium was declared by Indonesia's new Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti to determine which ships are not properly licensed and crack down on illegal foreign boats. Poaching drains billions of

dollars from the country, and Pudjiastuti said Friday that stamping it out is key to addressing labor abuses. She added she was horrified knowing fishermen are being enslaved in her country. "We are not letting this happen," she said. "In the past, it's been a normal practice. Not now. I'm not allowing it." The Indonesian government has pledged to take legal measures to address

ROMe/ SeATTle , MARch 28 (ReUTeRS): Italy's top court on Friday annulled the conviction of American Amanda Knox for the 2007 murder of her British flatmate and fully acquitted her in a surprise verdict capping nearly a decade of courtroom drama. The brutal stabbing of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher, alleged sex games and multiple trials provided fodder for tabloids on both sides of the Atlantic and inspired books and films. "I'm still absorbing the present moment, which is full of joy," an emotional Knox, 27, told reporters at a news conference outside her mother's Seattle home on Friday night. "I'm grateful to have my life back." The Court of Cassation threw out the second guilty verdict against Knox and her Italian former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 31, for the murder, saying there was insufficient evidence to convict either of them. Kercher, who was born in South London, was found stabbed to death in a house she shared with

Knox in the medieval hill town of Perugia in 2007. Rudy Guede, originally from the Ivory Coast, is serving a 16-year sentence for the crime, but judges in the previous trials ruled he did not act alone. It had been widely expected that, even if the court overturned the previous convictions, it would order a retrial. Instead, both Knox and Sollecito are now definitively cleared. "Meredith was my friend," Knox said, battling back tears. "She deserved so much in this life. I'm the lucky one." Knox and Sollecito, who faced some 28 years and 24 years in jail, respectively, have both already served four years in jail after an original conviction in 2009. The roundabout acquittals almost eight years after the murder are sure to stoke further controversy and questions about the Italian justice system, which has now twice overturned guilty verdicts in the case. "We shouldn't have had to wait all these years, but we have a good decision today, so we are happy,"

people were wounded. There was no immediate indication of how many of the dead were attackers, all of whom were killed according to Hussein. Somalia's ambassador to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Yusuf Bari-Bari was among those killed in the attack, said Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

ment has made repeated verbal commitments to get tough with traffickers but every time real follow-up has been lacking," Robertson said in an email. "The question now is whether the revelations in AP's article will finally be enough to push Thailand to take long overdue action against fishing vessels that are systematically using slave labor to catch the seafood ending up in America's kitchens." In the meantime, Ngwe Thein, 42, is one of the thousands of men who are waiting. Thein has been living on an island near Benjina for three years, after being forced to work long hours on a fishing trawler with inadequate food and little or no pay. He said he left Myanmar, otherwise known as Burma, eight years ago when his country was still under military rule. He did not know about the political and economic changes that began sweeping his country in 2011 or that the oppressive and brutal junta was gone. He asked if Nobel prize-winning opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was still under house arrest. Hours after the AP talked to him, he got a haircut and changed into a crisp shirt, saying he had hope for the first time that he might get to go home. "I don't know whether our country is good or bad now," he said. "There is just always a problem for us to survive wherever we are."

Knox's Italian defense lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova said in Rome. He added that when he called Knox in Seattle to tell her the news she was "crying with happiness." Francesco Maresca, a lawyer for the Kercher family, expressed very different sentiments. "This is not so much a defeat for the prosecution as a defeat for Italy's justice system," he said outside the courtroom. "The judges said there is a lack of proof and whoever acted with Guede has not been found." If the conviction against Knox had been upheld,

Al-Shabab siege at Somali hotel ends MOGADIShU, MARch 28 (AP): Somali troops on Saturday took full control of a hotel that extremist gunmen stormed and occupied for more than 12 hours following a suicide bombing. At least 17 people died and dozens were wounded. The gunfire has stopped and security agents control the whole building, said senior police officer Capt. Mohamed Hussein. He had earlier said the gunmen were believed to have occupied the third and fourth floors of the Maka Al-Mukarramah hotel in the capital Mogadishu. "The operation has ended. We have taken full control of the hotel," Hussein said. Hussein said security forces found four more bodies in the hotel Saturday, plus nine dead on Friday. Four more people died in the hospital, according to Duniya Mohamed, a doctor at Madina hospital in Mogadishu. Hussein Ali, an official of Mogadishu's ambulance service, said 28

what is happening in Benjina and other islands. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha also acknowledged the AP story and said his government was stepping up efforts to prosecute those responsible. "If they still continue to exploit their fellow human beings, they should not be given any licenses to operate businesses in Thailand, and they must receive the punishment they deserve," Prayuth said in a writ-

ten response to questions submitted by the Bangkok Post. However, earlier this week, Prayuth urged journalists not to report on human trafficking without considering how the news would affect the country's seafood industry and reputation abroad. The U.S. State Department last year blacklisted Thailand for its handling of labor abuses, putting it on par with countries including North Korea and Iran. The Thai government says it is cleaning up the problem and has laid out a plan, including new laws that mandate wages, sick leave and shifts of no more than 14 hours. On Thursday, Thai lawmakers voted unanimously to create tougher penalties for violating the country's anti-human trafficking law, including the death penalty. On Friday, 21 Thai fishermen who had been stranded in Indonesia returned home to their families, and the government is working to repatriate more. Major leaders in the U.S. seafood and retail industries sent a letter to the ambassadors of Thailand and Indonesia this week, demanding to know what will be done to free slaves in the seafood industry. Phil Robertson, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Asia division, also urged Thai authorities to tackle the scourge. "The Thailand govern-

Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremist group that has carried out many attacks in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the assault on the hotel, which is popular with Somali government officials and foreigners. Al-Shabab controlled much of Mogadishu between 2007 and 2011, but was pushed out of Somalia's capital and other major cities by African Union forces.

The attack started around 4 p.m. Friday when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden car at the gate of the hotel. Gunmen then quickly moved in. Hours later, the militants were still holed up in the hotel's dark corridors and rooms. Sporadic gunfire could be heard, but it appeared that the security forces waited until daybreak before trying again to dislodge the militants.

The terrorists are said to have then stormed into the first, second and third floors of the hotel where rooms are located and held several people hostage. The attack was condemned by the African Union mission to Somalia in which troops from several African countries support Somalia's weak government. "Our message to the perpetrators of this inhuman act is, that their action will not dampen our spirit for the common good of Somalia, but will further strengthen us to work even harder to defeat the enemy of peace and development, with the aim of rebuilding a stronger and stable Somalia," said Ambassador Maman S. Sidikou, the African Union's representative in Somalia. Al-Shabab routinely carries out suicide bombings, drive-by shootings and other attacks in Mogadishu, the seat of Somalia's Western-backed government, often targeting government troops, lawmakers and foreigners.

it would probably have sparked a complicated legal bid by Italian authorities to try to have her extradited. Knox, who returned to Seattle in 2011, and Sollecito have maintained their innocence throughout but Knox's lawyer Luciano Ghirga said before the verdict on Friday that his client was "very, very worried." Following the 2011 acquittal, the Court of Cassation ordered a new trial. A Florence court convicted them again, saying the murder had been the result of a domestic argument, squashing the previous the-

ory that it happened when a sex game went wrong. In Friday's verdict, a previous three-year jail sentence given to Knox for falsely accusing Congolese barman Patrick Lumumba of the murder was confirmed. But as Knox has already served four years in prison this has no practical consequences for her. Cries of jubilation could be heard from Knox's mother's house in Seattle where family had gathered to await the verdict. After the verdict was handed down, people could be seen rushing outside into the backyard with phones pressed to their ears, and later neighbors showed up with food and drinks. Bill Knox, her grandfather, said by phone he was "relieved and ecstatic" that Knox could finally move on with her life in Seattle, where she has worked as a journalist at a newspaper and is engaged to a rock musician whom she has known since childhood. "It's been a long time coming. I just want for her to be happy," Bill Knox said. "She is an exciting granddaughter."

axe attack

cOlOMBO, MARch 28 (AFP): The youngest brother of Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena died in hospital on Saturday after being attacked by a man wielding an axe two days earlier, police said. Priyantha Sirisena, a father of three, suffered severe head injuries in his hometown of Polonnaruwa, police said. The local businessman's death came as the Lankan president was in China on a state visit. Police said they arrested a man in connection with the attack and an investigation was under way. The government in a statement said he was "attacked during an altercation with a friend" on Thursday evening. The president's brother was flown to the capital for emergency treatment, but his head injuries were so severe that, despite surgery, he did not recover, doctors said. Unlike most former Sri Lankan leaders, President Sirisena has not extended personal security for his siblings and is known to have drastically scaled down his own protection unit.

Xi pledges path of peaceful development

BOAO, MARch 28 (ReUTeRS): Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Saturday that turmoil at home or abroad were not in the country's interests as its bitter past has shown, pledging that Beijing will never stray from its proclaimed path of peaceful development. Xi has jangled regional nerves with a more muscular approach to diplomacy since assuming the presidency two years ago, ramping up development of advanced weapons and being more assertive in territorial disputes in the East and South China Seas. Speaking at a high-level forum in Boao, on the southern Chinese island of Hainan, Xi said that China was ready to sign more friendship treaties with its neighbours and proposed holding dialogue among Asian civilisations. "What China most needs a harmonious and stable domestic environ-

ment and peaceful and tranquil international environment," Xi said, to an audience including leaders of countries like Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Nepal. "Any turmoil or war does not accord with the basic interests of the Chinese people," he added. "China has in the past 100 years or more suffered turmoil and war, and the Chinese people will never impose upon other countries or people the tragic history our own people have experienced," Xi said. "Looking broadly at history, any country trying to use force to achieve its own development goals will in the end only fail," he added. "I'm willing to use this opportunity to repeat that on the path ahead, China will unswervingly develop peacefully." Xi, who also used last year's APEC summit in Beijing to strike a more conciliatory diplomatic note, did

not make any direct reference to the East or South China Sea spats. This week China expressed serious concern after the Philippines said it would resume repair and reconstruction works on disputed islands in the South China Sea, though China is itself building on the islands it claims. Indonesian President Joko Widodo, speaking after Xi, said he supported finding peaceful solutions to issues within the region. "Tension between countries in Asia is a dangerous game, which does not benefit any nation," he said through a translator. Widodo said in an interview with a major Japanese newspaper shortly before arriving in China that one of China's main claims to the majority of the South China Sea had no legal basis in international law, but that Jakarta wanted to remain an "honest broker" in one of Asia's most thorny disputes.

‘Opt for a career in sports’

DiMaPUR, MaRch 28 (MExN): The 43rd annual sports week of Government High School, Diphupar, was conducted from March 26-28 at Diphupar Local ground with commander, 6 Sector Assam Rifles, Brig. Brijesh Dhiwan, gracing the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest. The chief guest in his address encouraged the students to foster and promote unity and oneness and to face whatever challenges that may come their way. Terming extracurricular activities like games and sports as vital to the overall personal development of the students, Brig. Dhiwan, urged the young participants to respect the rule of the games and to always have the sporting spirit. He also said in real life too, students should also put into practice the team spirit and camaraderie exhibited during the games. Brig. Dhiwan further said that students can opt for a career in sports, which will not only earn them personal fame but also bring glory to the state and country. Earlier, the chief guest unfurled the flag commemorating the start of the sports week and also took the salute of the march past contingents comprising of four houses and accompanied by the Assam Rifles band party. It's a team for the future, says Dhoni

MELBOURNE, MaRch 28 (agENciEs): It takes time to build teams for World Cups. Bob Simpson spent a few years with the Australian team before it began emerging as the new global superpower in the game two decades ago. Imran Khan and Arjuna Ranatunga nurtured sides with great care keeping the game's biggest tournament in mind. MS Dhoni got to lead an Indian team that had been a dominant force in the cricket world for 10 years. None of these champion teams got to beat the rest of the world overnight. The Indian team that saw its World Cup campaign come to an end in Sydney on Thursday was a side in the making for three years and Dhoni says that regardless of him being around or not, this is the side that'll continue to stay together for the 2019 edition. After the semifinal loss, Dhoni hinted at playing the 2016 World Twenty20 but it's unlikely if the skipper - 33 years of age now - will stick around another four years. He nevertheless is convinced that the current lot will evolve in due time. "This is a very young team that has played together for a few years now. There are some very talented players who have done well consistently and they're still learning," the skipper said. The average age of this Indian team is 27 and Dhoni is the oldest at 33. The likes of Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan, will be around 32 when it's time to tour England. The loss to Australia in the semifinal notwithstanding, Dhoni feels this bunch will improve as time flies by. "This batting order that you have seen will remain in the coming years. So whatever they have learnt, it will help them in the coming tours outside the sub-continent," he says. At present, the skipper's big and only concern is the bowling unit and how it'll sustain the pressures of injuries and fatigue in the years to come. He says it's time the BCCI and the state associations back in India start figuring out a long term plan for India's pace bowlers to avoid burnouts. "If we want to look at the interest of Indian cricket, we have to monitor the progress of fast bowlers as to how many overs they are sending down and the amount of workload they are taking. At the same time, our bowlers shouldn't play too many matches in Indian domestic cricket. They should play on and off," says Dhoni. Umesh Yadav (18), Mohammed Shami (17) and Mohit Sharma (13) collectively took 48 wickets, an effort that left many surprised. Dhoni says that for this talented bunch to be nurtured, the state associations in India need to leave them alone to concentrate on the game at the highest level instead of pestering them to play the Ranji Trophy. "If a fast bowler refuses to play domestic matches, local associations grumble and say 'now that you are playing for India, you won't play for us'," observes the skipper. "These problems need to be tackled."He strongly opposes this trend and has urged the board to monitor these players closely. "There are no checks and balances on the number of overs they are being asked to bowl. At the international level, the intensity level required is high. We have seen a lot of times how a fast bowler comes to the scene bowling 145 kmph and suddenly becomes a 132 kmph line and length bowler. It needs looking into," says Dhoni.

ur state attained statehood on December 1st, 1963; however, far behind the other progressive states even after 51 year. The current scenario of Nagaland is extremely sad. Why is it sad? You must be thinking of political setback or the societal mutilation in a general sense. But today, let us retrospect; take a closer look from the lowest level to the highest. You might question, what are the core causes dampening the advancement of our state? I am sure that there is no ambiguousness of abhorrent factors that are obviously prevailing in our society and for which every individual must have queries to this quest. I am gratified with the engrossed gesticulations by some of the young Nagas and the initiation of movements like ACAUT, FNR etc., which tries to tackle the emerging task to fight for the reprehensible injustice; filing an embark on the atrocious matters of multiple prevailing issues in our Naga society. I am enthralled by them but also doubt that these organisations alone will not resolve all the burning issues. There are astonishing tasks pertaining to resolving impediments in our society by NBCC which are fascinating including a few involvement by other Associations or denominations but what about the rest? Many ignore these, consciously or inadvertently though they discern the causes. Why are we being so ignorant? A look at the statistical report, the literacy rate of Nagaland is high and impressive but by the way we ignore the matters in a civilised society is saddening. Captured from the perpendicular Broadview, the onetime cohesion of Nagas has become frail in the way we subsist today. The general public and the ruling class alike, knows no boundaries in pursuing selfish ambitions and self attainments at the cost of each other through unjust ways and measures. To name a few - the search for position, power, money, fame and recognition, at all strata of the society, has resulted in a failed state. The inability of our government to deliver basic public service is truly aggravating keeping aside the many other functionaries of our state. Blame game played by each of us has generated many evils in many unknown outcomes. Not realising that we are contributors to the already weakening state of ours; we continue to degrade our society. Negligence or ignorance of our people to strive ahead slackens the move towards the green pasture. Instead of being trend setters we have been blinded by our greed, corrupting our minds which can be depicted in the present polluted state. By ‘pol-

luted’, I mean a wide range of issues pertaining to our society. Today we witness corruption which is eminent from the grass root level to the topmost level, administrative failure, favouritism, intolerance and impatience. Spirited arguments about state’s economic achievements and failures had been raised, nonetheless behind the scene all of us know what operates. One is furious when one’s aspirations or expectations are not fulfilled which intensifies the already degraded society of ours. This vicious cycle carries on because of our narrow vested interest. The values and principles inherent in our predecessors are at a crucial and critical point as we often ignore them in pursuance of our greed and interest. No doubt we take ourselves as wise but by taking ourselves as wise, we are becoming fools. Our actions and deeds contradict our good judgements. Letting go of hard labour and good works we are mastering in sowing lies, forgeries, and deceitful ways in the quest for self fulfilment. We are submitting to our weaknesses and sliding down the ladder. We are now good in pointing fingers at the flaws of others never realising that we commit the same pitfalls. The failure of responsibility and accountability in every circle is truly agonising when we closely examine our society whether in offices or any other work places. The administrative services in our state is weak, the policymakers hardly abide by what they profess, the general public fuelling behind the scenes, breaking down the whole mechanism. Will we continue to trade off our short term benefits over long term proper functioning of our society, telling ourselves that it is inevitable and nothing can be done or are we going to stand up and fight? We have in our society the prevalence of divisions, factionalism, tribalism and communalism where each one is against the other leading to unsolved issues and complications to the extent of threats and killings. Each group wants recognition and power and is stained by hatred and betrayal. The so called “national workers” extort from our own people and also commit heinous crimes which amount to further complication of the whole social issue. Most of the time when people talk about the underground units, what comes to our mind is their improper actions like: extortion, bribery, killing, stirring violence. When they should be playing role models in bringing about peace and unity, they have become the forerunners of corruption. At this crucial stage of pressing for Naga independence we cannot tolerate all the above mentioned untoward instances. Today, many Christians deceive themselves by violating values wearing masks. Often we tend to pass judgement on Christian leaders not realising that we are at the other end doing the same thing. There are some dynamic Christian ministers/ leaders who involve in unjust means

and we are quick to judge. Who are we to judge when we indulge in the same field? Today many Christian leaders do ministry without knowing the real meaning of Ministry. Some Christian leaders think of their ministry as a stable and respectable position and being immodest and not in meekness. There are also some who do ministry with wrong motives simply to compete with some others whose ministries are flourishing. At this juncture, we need to strive to cultivate better ethics and higher thinking to engage in a better transformation of our society. I am sure many of the politicians, the bureaucrats, the administrators, the factionalists, are Christians or attached with a church in one way or the other and claim themselves as Christians. If we are Christians, an authentic believer or follower of Christ, it’s sad that our deeds contradict our principles. We declare the theme “Nagaland for Christ” for our land but what seed are we sowing today? Scrutinizing a recent event, December 2014, during the Hornbill Festival, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi paid a visit to Nagaland. Here, observing the obsession of Modi’s visit, let me take the stance of NH 39 which is the main route where Modi supposed to passed through. The state government renovated the road swiftly. Had Modi not come, would our government have bothered to reconstruct the road? If our state government perpetually failed to pay attention to the immense needs of our people, not just in this instance alone, I wish external factor keep striking in and that our Prime Minister visit our state every year so that at least we could have better roads through renovation each year. Schemes and development programmes from the central Government will not bring our Naga’s issues to an end. It may solve the problem to some extent but the major solutions are within each individual as Nagas. We now live in an age where our lives are marked with instabilities, inequality, jealousy, criticisms, and we cannot surpass these trails without facing them. Undeniably, we witness pulling down of some honest people who work for the welfare of our society. With this discrepancy we do not see changes in our land instead, intensification of corruption overpowering the little good that we inherit at present. I believe, in order to restore the intrinsic values of our society, we need to voice out, responding individually to the hour of need. Now is the time we need to shoulder and resolve the current issues and do away with our narrow vested interest. We need to envision a broader view and collectively make a change. The future lies in our hands and we all have a part in it. Let us choose to collectively harness and tap our abilities and capabilities for a better tomorrow. On unabated influx of illegal immigrants

D

espite all continual efforts since the past decades by many Naga forefront leaders, the saturated problem already created due to the unregulated influx of illegal immigrants in Nagaland has become too alarming, which is directly threatening the very existence of the Naga identity in our own homeland because of the incompatible mushroom growth of illegal foreigners. In view of these impending dangers, the Nagas must join hands in the struggle to prevent ourselves from being swamped by outsiders and outside forces. Therefore, if we wish to escape from the current threat, we need to initiate effective policies to deliver realistic and optimal solution to rectify the irregularities in the system, where, the past State and Central Government(s) machinery have miserably failed to tackle illegal infiltrators to a great extent. The serious concern rekindled recently by the Naga Students Federation (NSF) and Survival Nagaland (SN) to tackle the menace on Illegal Bangladeshis Immigrants (IBIs) should be well appreciated and welcomed by every Nagas in finding a common logical end. However, if we wish to win the battle, we need powerful leaders and intellectuals from all fronts besides NSF and SN to input insights into the technical deficiencies of the system. And to achieve the common goal, the State Government must promptly act on generating a comprehensive policy in approaching the Central Government for all necessary assistance. While it is important to understand the provisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 popularly known as the ‘Inner Line Permit’ system and other constitutional Acts, below here are some points of suggestions for discussion

and adoption; 1. To demand for further extension of ILP boundary in the whole state of Nagaland covering Dimapur Dist. and all the foot-hill areas of Nagaland. 2. A separate cell, centre for issuing ILP should be launched in Nagaland's port-head i.e. Dimapur, to intensively check and record any foreigners arriving by roads, train or flight at Dimapur. 3. A visitor or tourists, who intend to apply for the existing temporary permit of 15 days, should not be entitled for jobs either in public or private enterprises. 4. Departments such as, Labor and Employment should be officially assigned for supervision and authentication of every non-local labourers in the State with specific criteria and duration to stay in Nagaland. 5. A Chairman/Headman/GB of a Town, village and colony with Tribal Hohos and Student bodies of any perceptive area under the operation should be empowered to maintain proper records of the ‘in and out’ movements of immigrants residing in the particular vicinity. 6. A Special Commission should be constituted immediately to undertake extensive revision of electoral roll aimed at deleting the names of foreigners and illegal migrants from the electoral rolls within a stipulated period; until such revision is completed, no election should be conducted in Nagaland. 7. A Special committee should be instituted involving the like-minded Organizations to study and adopt a proactive policy to be submitted to the Central Government in the form of a ‘White Paper’ for bringing out a comprehensive policy to combat this problem.

8. Any initiative policies of these Special Committees approved by the State Govt. on behalf of the genuine citizens should be co-operated and encouraged by providing logistic and other supports including financial implication required for its effective implementation by the Government and the public at large. Further, to rhythm with these challenges, I humbly urge that every Nagas must aim to contribute to the debate on Illegal immigrants concerning Nagaland state keeping in mind all other confronting Issues of the Naga society, by stimulating discussion and exchange of ideas between various professionals, academicians, researchers, policymakers, consultants, practitioners, government officials and postgraduate students from resources-related fields for the State and Central governments, businessmen, communities, and Non Governmental organizations to continuously assess the factors on ground reality, to examine future trends and to adopt comprehensive policy and various worktable techniques to cut risk and implausibility. And I’m sure, in the process, many lapses and loopholes in the system will gradually be diagnosed to be treated with better equipments. To conclude, the need of the hour is to understand that it is no longer a humanitarian problem but a security problem, which needs to be dealt assertively but without hampering bilateral relations with the neighboring countries. It is time for the country to understand the seriousness of the issue and set up time bound measures once and for all. “SAVE NAGALAND TODAY FOR YOURS TOMORROW” N. Sonnet on ThirtyFive and Seventy I woke up two thirty in the morning, It was too early to start a day, I know. I kept myself away from drinking, That is a routine I wanted to follow. I took a pencil to note down in my diary. There was a clock hanging on the wall, I saw the valuable time ticking away, Then I felt for the nature’s call. Birds on the tree started chirping, I went on thinking and dreaming. Wandering away to an age of seventy, Without a word written on my diary. ll Catastrophic Accidents originate from a small mistake or from apparently an insignificant negligence. The Bhopal Poisonous Gas Catastrophe is reported to have been due to the late reporting for duty of a low level Worker whose duty was to close the valve that prevents poisonous gas escaping into the atmosphere at night. Normally on joining duty, the night shift Worker closes the Valve but he was late joining his turn and assumed the Worker he relieved must have closed the Valve. The day shift Worker on the other hand thought the night shift worker as usual would close the valve and left. At night extremely poisonous gas escaped into the atmosphere. The Gas Plant was very near the Bhopal Railway Station and poisonous Gas -heavier than Air- engulfed the Railway Station. Immediately Passengers fell ill and begin to suffocate unconscious. They did not know what has happened. The matter was reported to the Police, the Police enquired whether something has gone wrong with the nearby Plant but were answered there was no Report from the chemical Plant of anything gone wrong. By then a section of Bhopal was engulfed by the Gas, only then the Plant people found the stop cock that prevents the poisonous gas from escaping into the atmosphere open. A local Sümi college girl alleged to have been raped in Dimapur on 23 February 2015, allegedly by an illegal immigrant generated wide spread resentment in the Nagas particularly in the large Sümi population in and around Dimapur against the so-called IBI –illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants, who has almost captured the Vegetable, the Second hand Garments, the Cell phone & Electronic Markets, most of the Construction and Agriculture workforce in the Plain Sector. There has been intermarriage particularly between the upper-class-land-owning Sümis and the many Shares cropping Meyas for the last one generation and almost a Community of mixed Sümis and Meyas called Semiya often speaking flawless Sümi has come out and most other Naga Communities view this with grave apprehensions. An FIR was filed and on 27 February 2015 on Sayed Farid Khan and a co-accused Naga were reported to have been arrested and put into the Jail. It was alleged Khan was an IBI –illegal Bangladeshi Immigrant. The Victim is reported to have told the Police that the Accused with his co-accused accomplice and She went to the Super Market at Dimapur from where the Accused left the Co-accused and took the Girl for a ride towards Shoba, a Village some 15Km east of Dimapur. There she became intoxicated of a Drink and she alleged was raped. After that they rode back to Dimapur and checked into a well known Hotel. The Internal TV Circuit in the Hotel showed the Accused at Registration Counter and the Victim standing behind him with her face half covered. Then the TV caught them entering a Room with the Victim following the Accused. The Victim in her narration told the Police she was violated twice again in the Hotel Room and was offered Rs. 5000/ allegedly by the accused 'to keep her mouth shut'. The next morning the internal TV caught them again checking out, the Victim following immediately behind the Accused! Medical Report on the alleged Victim confirmed 'Penetration'. The Accused Khan has informed the investigating Police that the episode was a consensual activity. Now, if the physical violation at Shoba were a case of Rape, it is surprising the Victim rode back to Dimapur with the accused and checked in to a high Class Hotel together to spent the night without any protest or complaint to any, instead of running away from the Culprit! There are many unanswered questions, a few important ones are: i. Did the Girl have no Cell Phone to inform her Relatives immediately? ii. Did she tell her Parents or Relatives or the Hotel Authorities she was violated? iii. It is reported she was offered Rs 5000/ 'silence money'. iv. Did she accept it or not? If the silent money was accepted, she should have kept silence bound by it and not cried wolf for which the whole inhuman ghastly Lynching took place. The protest Rally from Schools, Colleges, 9 NGOs and a wide circle of concerned well meaning Citizens in Dimapur, in support of the girl, turned into a senseless lynching mob. How did a well meaning Protest Rally of Peaceful Citizens turned into an inhuman Mob ? The First mistake was in the use of the hated word "RAPE". The complainant, here a young College Girl, filed an FIR in which she complained she was 'RAPED'. The Second mistake which sent a drastically wrong sense was that the Accused was an alleged 'Illigal Migrant' -a term allergic to most Nagas in Nagaland. The responsibility to keep a Public Rally within the bounds of democratic decency lies mostly with the Organizers and the 9 NGOs led by NSF with its former President who functioned as the Chairman of the protest Meeting at the Clock Tower on that fateful day of 5th March 2015. Much things have gone wrong and many questions are still lay unanswered but the two things that launch are: i. Crying Wolf by a local College Girl of RAPE, ii. By an Illegal Immigrant. This inflamed the indigenous into anger that led to a chain of actions one after another and finally, a supposedly peaceful Rally ended in a lynching of unimaginable ferocity, cruelty leading to irreparable damage to the already lowered Nagaland's Image and all Nagas not only in India alone but also in the whole world, all because of a characterless naga girl and some ruffians in the Street! Nagas must avoid such things in future. Thepfulhouvi Solo

Good luck you’ll love it!” Following the announcement by O’Leary, there were suggestions that he could move to the BBC to join Top Gear. With his Radio 2 work, he has become a star on the BBC as well as ITV, particularly after generating admiration on social media after completing a 24-hour danceathon for Comic Relief. He replaced The X Factor’s original host, Kate Thornton, who presented the show from 2004 until 2007 when she was axed by Cowell. The 12th series of X Factor is due to begin this year and Cowell is expected to refresh the show as usual. An ITV spokesman said: “Dermot’s been a fantastic host of The X Factor for the past eight series and we’re sorry to see him go. We wish him all the very best for the future and hope that he’ll be back on ITV screens soon.”

ollywood actress Katrina Kaif has become the latest Indian star to join the Bollywood line-up at Madame Tussauds in London. The actress unveiled the wax statue and joined the new Bollywood setting as part of the popular wax-work museum’s “15 years of Bollywood” celebration. After coming face-to-face with her wax model, Katrina said, “This is amazing it does look really like me.” Katrina, born to a British mother and Kashmiri father, was picked after she went head to head with competitors Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone to win a hotly contested poll last year via Madame Tussauds website and in collaboration with Panjab Radio, with more than 225,000 votes were cast. The 31-year-old British-Indian actress has become the seventh Bollywood actor to be honoured with a figure at Madame Tussauds London and joins Amitabh Bachchan (2000), Aishwarya Rai (2004), Shah Rukh Khan (2007), Salman Khan (2008), Hrithik Roshan (2011) and Madhuri Dixit-Nene (2012). “Our world famous sculptors have worked closely with the Indian film industry over the last decade, and we now have a stellar line-up in a specially created Bollywood area — one of the most popular in the attraction,” Madame Tussauds said in a statement. Katrina’s figure was created by a team of 20 sculptors and artists over a four-month period, using hundreds of precise measurements taken at a sitting in Mumbai and cost $150,000 to create. Madame Tussauds Studios London has been making wax figures for over 150 years with each masterpiece taking up to four months and a team of 20 dedicated sculptors to create.

ichael Clarke's retirement decision overshadowed the eve of the Cricket World Cup final, with the Australian captain using a pre-match news conference to reveal Sunday's tournament decider against New Zealand would be his last one-day international. Clarke, who turns 34 next week, said he told his teammates of his retirement about 10 minutes before announcing it to a packed news conference on Saturday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He said wanted to give his successor a full four-year cycle to prepare a team for the 2019 World Cup, and hoped that a break from the shorter format would allow him to continue playing test cricket for longer. "I was very fortunate four years ago to get the opportunity to captain this one-day team (and) that was really good preparation for me leading up to this World Cup," he said. "The next Australian captain deserves the same opportunity. I don't think it's realistic that I'll be fit and healthy for the next World Cup, so I believe it's the right time." Clarke has had a chronic back problem throughout his career and has recently struggled with hamstring strains, requiring surgery late last year that kept him out of action for more than two months between the finish of the first test against India and Australia's second match at the World Cup. Full name: Steve Smith, the Michael John Clarke 25-year-old batsman Date of birth: April 2, 1981 who deputized as test Teams: Australia, Hampshire, captain in Clarke's New South Wales, Pune Warriors absence against InNickname: Pup dia, is a contender TesT record to take over the ODI Matches: 108 captaincy. That gave the Australian public a great insight into a player who had been a regular in the national team for a dozen years. Clarke was part of Australia's winning team at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, and a member of the squad which lost in the quarterfinals in 2011 to eventual champion India. Sunday's match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground will be his second appearance in a World Cup final, and his 245th ODI. He made his debut at Adelaide in January 2003, taking a wicket and scoring 39 not out in a win over England. "I think I leave the one-day game for the Australian team in a better place than when I took over the captaincy," he said. "Last World Cup, we were knocked out in the quarterfinal. This World Cup we've been able to make the final and hopefully we can go on and have success in that final." Clarke, a right-handed batsman and occasional left-arm spinner, has scored eight centuries and 57 half centuries in his 222 ODI innings, compiling 7,907 runs at an average of 44.42. He also took 57 wickets with a best return of 5-35. Australia will play test series against the West Indies and England after the World Cup, where Clarke will be aiming to add to his 108 test caps. It's "obviously a priority for me to continue to be successful in the test format," Clarke said, "and I think by walking away from oneday cricket it probably gives me my best opportunity."

factfIle

LONDON, March 28 (aFP): Wayne Rooney and debutant Harry Kane scored as England sank Lithuania 4-0 at Wembley on Friday to claim a fifth consecutive win in qualifying for the 2016 European Championship. Rooney's early header took him to 47 England goals -- two shy of Bobby Charlton's record -- and Tottenham Hotspur breakthrough star Kane netted with his second touch after coming on as a substitute to mark his first international appearance with a goal. Raheem Sterling also claimed his first goal in an England shirt, while Danny Welbeck capped a man-of-the-match performance with his sixth strike of the qualifying campaign. The victory preserved England's six-point lead at the top of Group E and means Roy Hodgson's side will travel to Italy for next week's friendly with a place at next year's tournament in France already in sight. There had been conjecture prior to kick-off as to whether Kane would start the game, but Hodgson's decision to keep faith with Welbeck quickly bore fruit in the first ever meeting between the teams. Adopting a roving role on one side of Rooney, with Sterling his counterpart on the other side, the Arsenal man immediately forced Igoris Pankratjevas's men back with his directness and sinewy running. Rooney squandered a chance to open the deadlock in the fourth minute, steering the ball against the post from Fabian Delph's flick, but he did not require a second invitation. Two minutes later, Welbeck nutmegged Tadas Kijanskas before forcing Giedrius Arlauskis to save and Rooney followed in to head home his 47th international goal. He was to strike the woodwork again in the 19th minute, intelligently looping a header against the bar after Welbeck had athletically hoiked the ball back from the byline. There was one first-half scare for England, with Phil Jones obliged to block from Deivydas Matulevicius after right-back Nathaniel Clyne had allowed Vytautas Andriuskevicius room to cross. But it did not have the feeling of a true contest and England were soon back on top, with Arlauskis smothering Rooney's free-kick and the rampant Welbeck curling over before the

latter made it 2-0. Stooping, Welbeck managed to help on Jordan Henderson's cross-shot from the left and the ball bobbled into the net via a big deflection off Kijanskas's thigh. The onslaught continued in the second half, with Arlauskis producing a fine one-handed save to repel a volley from Delph and then beating away a shot from Welbeck. The third goal duly arrived shortly before the hour and saw captain Rooney turn provider with an inviting right-wing cross that Sterling turned in. Kane, scorer of 29 goals for Tottenham this season, made his entrance to loud cheers as a replacement for Rooney in the 71st minute and it took the 21-year-old just 80 seconds to find the net. Sterling reached the byline on the left before lifting a cross to the back post and Kane powered a downward header through Arlauskis's grasp to confirm his burgeoning reputation as English football's hottest property.

bizarre headed goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic put Sweden on the road to a 2-0 victory over Moldova in their Euro 2016 Group G qualifier in Chisinau on Friday, with the striker also netting a late penatly. Sweden's captain gave his side the lead immediately after halftime when Moldova goalkeeper Ilie Cebanu's attempt to deal with a back pass failed to clear the frontman. Ibrahimovic reacted with lightning reflexes to head the ball into an empty net from the edge of the penalty area to notch his 52nd goal in 102 international appearances. Bottom of the group on a single point, Moldova chose to defend deep for most of the game and created little, their occasional forays forward on the counter-attack failing to trouble the Swedish rearguard. Ibrahimovic almost doubled his tally in the 75th minute, but his thunderous free kick found Cebanu in a less generous mood and he swatted the ball away to safety. Cebanu continued to redeem himself, performing a smart double-save to deny Sweden substitutes Marcus Berg and Emil Forsberg in the 81st minute. But there was little he could do in the 84th minute when winger Forsberg was upended and Ibrahimovic smashed home the resulting penalty to secure the win for Sweden. With group leaders Austria winning 5-0 away to Liechtenstein, the result means the Swedes stay in second place on nine points, four behind the Austrians. Source: Reuters

Lewis Hamilton on pole for Malaysian Grand Prix

SEPaNg, March 28 (rEUTErS): World champion Lewis Hamilton splashed through the puddles at a rain-soaked Sepang International Circuit to secure pole position for Mercedes in a hectic Malaysian Grand Prix qualifying session on Saturday. The Briton, who cruised to victory from the front in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix this month, battled through the traffic just to survive the final cut in Q2 and was rewarded with the 40th pole position of his career. Hamilton clocked one minute 48.834 seconds on his first lap of Q3 and the time was fast enough to hold off all challengers, including Sebastian Vettel, who proved Ferrari`s impressive early-season form was no fluke with a solid second place. Four-times world champion Vettel, who looks revitalised since join-

ing the Italian outfit from Red Bull in the close season, backed up his thirdplace finish in Australia with a scintillating final lap to trail Hamilton by just 0.074 seconds. The German not only broke the Mercedes stranglehold in qualifying by finishing ahead of a disappointed Nico Rosberg, but he also became the first Ferrari driver to sit on the front row since Felipe Massa at the same circuit in 2013. Rosberg will be joined on the second row by Red Bull`s Daniel Ricciardo after a tropical downpour early in the second session forced the drivers to wait in the garage for 35 minutes before the track was safe enough to go out again. Daniil Kvyat will start in fifth place in the other Red Bull with Toro Rosso teenager Max Verstappen joining the Russian on the third row following another impressive drive.

Saina to become World No.1, enters maiden India Open final

NEw DELhI, March 28 (IaNS): Come Thursday when the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings are revised, Saina Nehwal will become the first Indian woman to be ranked No.1 in singles. Following reigning World Champion Carolina Marin's semi-final loss to Ratchanok Intanon at the India Open Superseries here on Saturday, Saina's way became clear to notch the top spot ahead of her own semi-final, which she plays later in the day. Spaniard Carolina and Saina were in the race to grab the coveted position in the absence of China's top ranked Li Xuerui. It is only a formality for the 25-year-old Saina who will overtake reigning Olympic champion Xuerui on Thursday to become the first non-Chinese woman to be No.1 since December 2010 when Denmark's Tine Baun was the top ranked shuttler. day, when the Badminton World Federation (BWF) releases its revised rankings, Saina came out on top in only 44 minutes to overcome the unseeded Japanese 21-15, 21-11. The top seed exacted

revenge from Yui for her second round loss exactly two years ago here in the same tournament. It was the only time the two met previously. World No. 2 Saina will next take on 2013 winner and former World Champion Ratchanok Intanon in the final on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Thai overcame reigning World Champion Carolina Marin of Spain 21-19, 21-23, 2220 in a marathon battle that lasted an hour and 24 minutes. Later, the World No. 37 proved no match for Saina as the Indian won 42 of the 68 points played in the match. Though the Japanese showed spirit at the start of the contest, she could not persist with the high level of agility and speed to match Saina. The second game was totally dominated by the Olympic bronze medallist as she reached 20-6 in no time. Saina appeared a little lax to waste five matchpoints before sealing the tie on her sixth attempt.

Rafa Nadal and Murray advance in Miami Open

MIaMI, March 28 (rEUTErS): Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray got their Miami Open bids off to a solid start with straight sets victories at Key Biscayne on Friday. Nadal defeated fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-4 6-2 in 89 minutes in windy conditions as he began his campaign to finally win the Miami tournament where he has lost in the final on three occassions. "In general I thought I played a solid match. I played well, I had good movement," said Nadal. "I had to put the balls in and play with no mistakes -- that was the idea with very tough conditions. Almagros was not an easy opponent." Murray had little trouble dealing with American Donald Young in his opening match with a 6-4 6-2 victory. Murray, a two-time winner at Key Biscyane, broke left-hander Young four times as he wrapped up the win in 82 minutes. The Scot will face San-

tiago Giraldo in the next round after the Colombian beat Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-2 3-6 6-0. Murray is looking for his 10th Masters 1000 title and his third trophy in Miami, having won in 2009 and 2013. Key Biscayne is something of a 'home court' for Murray, who practices at the venue during his offseason preparation. "I spend hours, hundreds and hundreds of hours, practicing on that court," he said. "Each week, when I am here, I would practice 14 hours at least on that court. Over the last seven, eight years, I have spent a lot of time on it." South Korean teenager Chung Hyeon, who gained his first ATP World Tour win on Wednesday, was beaten by eighth seed Tomas Berdych, the Czech triumphing 6-3 6-4. Chung showed his promise again, however, gaining a 4-2 lead in a rain-interrupted second set before Berdych took control, winning the last four sets.
