Dimapur DC terms March 4 auto strike as unauthorised

C M Y K

Dimapur, march 2 (mExN): Dimapur Deputy Commissioner, Wezope Kenye today informed the public that the indefinite strike called by the General Autorickshaw Drivers from March 4 is unauthorised and illegal. The DC informed in a public notice that appropriate action would be taken against those defaulters who try to create law and order situation. The DC further directed all auto drivers to ply and comply with the rates fixed by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Dimapur. Meanwhile, the Dimapur District Auto Drivers Union (DDADU) has informed all auto drivers and the public that it has not called for an autorickshaw strike on March 4. It directed all auto drivers “not to resort to any kind of strike, but take out their vehicles for interest of the general public.”

district since the February 16 incidents of violence, it was added. From March 3, curfew will be relaxed from 6:00 am till 4:00 pm allowing schools to reopen, government offices to function and businesses to resume. Night-time curfew will however remain in effect beginning 4:00 pm till 6:00 in the morning. With regard to the ultimatum served to the Tuensang police by the Longkhim Division Students’ Union and the Town Students Union Longkhim, the Tuensang police said that it has conducted inquiry on the

allegation of assault levelled against personnel of the 14th NAP (IR). It was alleged that IR personnel during law and order vigil had assaulted two youths and had extracted money from vehicles on the pretext of conducting security frisking in Longkhim on February 26. During the inquiry, six personnel of the 14th NAP (IR), who were reportedly involved in the incidents, were identified. The police personnel have been withdrawn from law and order duty and sent back to their battalion headquarters for further disciplinary proceedings, it was informed.

Nagaland’s vast virgin forests, which stretch as far as the eye can see, may vanish in decades, with the rising demand of timber and domestic fuel and also with the arrival of a machine - the chainsaw which has been imported from across the border. In areas like Phokhungri, under Meluri sub division, chainsaws are imported from Burma. Phokhungri serves as a habitat for a variety of plant and animal species and also the store house of fresh water and clean air. An unusual combinations of sounds is heard, when one traverses along the large forests of the Phokhungri area. This sound combines the cacophony of the chainsaw interspersed with whispering pines, chirping birds, and some herbivorous animals in the silence of beautiful nature. Villagers in the area who have started using these machines disclose that more than ten chainsaws have been imported from across the border recently. The chainsaws, with German labels on them, cost Rs 42,000 per piece and are bought from Lashi in Burma. The villagers say that these machines are still in large demand. According to the villagers, the use of chainsaws has drastically reduced the amount of time and la-

bour required to cut timber for sale. Expressing visible satisfaction with their machines, they inform that with the help of chainsaws, four persons can cut 4-5 ‘thaks,’ measuring 6x6 ft of firewood. The cut firewood is arranged and sold for Rs 1300 on the spot itself. The entire process takes about three days. If done manually, the process from cutting the firewood would require three weeks, besides an increase in the cost of firewood. The villagers mostly sell the cut wood to local log merchants. The chainsaws require around 5 to 6 liters of petrol a day and can cut around 30 cft of plank. The same job would require around six persons if done manually. Villagers

also disclose that the cost of a chainsaw can be recovered within eight months time. If any parts of the machine are damaged they import the parts from Burma. The villagers further say that, with the coming of the chainsaw, life has become easier. The vast geography and the richness of the forest in the area enable villagers in Phokhungri to cut any quantity of wood in the forest reserve, provided that the wood is used for domestic purposes and not for commercial use. Sensing the need for road connectivity and development, some of the villagers in the area make deals with the local contractors. As part of these deals, the contractors are

allowed to take 700-800 truckloads of high quality wood, provided that they provide some sort of road connectivity to the village. In a place where felling timber and selling of wood is a major avenue for villagers to earn, the chainsaws from Burma have occupied a space which gives them personification. These inanimate machines run on petrol have increased the earnings of villagers, while simultaneously speeding up the rate of deforestation. Like many other areas of the world, permeation of ‘modernity’ into indigenous ‘lifestyles’ of the Nagas have created a complex milieu. The Burmese chainsaws of Phokhungri are an example.

ues.” Informing that among the many sports, Naga wrestling attracts the largest crowd in the state, the Parliamentary Secretary encouraged Nagas to take up the sport in the national and international levels. swine flu: nagaland Health Department urges alertness

Dimapur, march 2 (mExN): The Nagaland state Health Department today stated that while the status of the Swine Flu epidemic in Nagaland is under control, “we should remain vigilant and alert.” A press note from the Nodal Officer, IDSP, Dr Tiasunep Pongener informed that all cases in the state were imported from outside. However, he noted that the virus “has entered Nagaland and it is here to stay and cause sporadic and seasonal outbreaks in future.” So far, the Nodal Officer informed that 16 samples have been sent to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dibrugarh, out of which four tested positive. The ICMR Laboratory at Dibrugarh has reportedly advised the state Health Department to screen patients by following the Standard Operation Procedure Guidelines (SOP) of the centre prior to collection and despatch of

samples. All District Hospitals have also been instructed to follow the same criteria of screening. Treatment with Capsule Oseltamivir for confirmed H1N1 patients, Dr Longkumer informed, is available with the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare (provided on need based). As per the centre’s guidelines, the “vaccine should be given to high risk people e.g. health personnel, chronic asthmatic patient, Immuno compromised cases etc.” The Nagaland state government is “contemplating” to provide vaccination to its health personnel. In the meantime the Department of Health & Family Welfare does not recommend the use and promotion of any unrecognized or unauthorized medicines, informed the Nodal Officer. He further assured that the “direction of the epidemic” in Nagaland “is not so alarming.” This, he stated, is due to high level

commitment from the government, warmer and dry weather taking over, better awareness levels, commitment and sensitivity of health personnel, contribution of stakeholders and experiences gained during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and Ebola outbreak. Affirming that the fight has just begun, Dr Longkumer called for more thrust by all stakeholders in order to control the situation. He advised against unnecessary travel outside and called for “safety habits, prevent spread to others, avoid crowded places, seek timely medical advice, eat nutritious food and get plenty of sleep and rest.” “At the same time do not panic or create rumours but be cautious and cooperate at all levels,” he urged. With the arrival of the windy season, Dr Longkumer further advised precautionary measures against respiratory diseases, especially exposure to dust.

DIMaPur, March 2 (Mexn): The WHO member States, collaborating centre and partners will be involved in the commemoration of International Ear and Hearing Care Day March 3 2015 under the theme “Make Listening Safe”. The proposed theme intends to draw attention towards this problem and to raise awareness about noiseinduced hearing loss caused by recreational exposure to loud sounds, while also conveying suitable message to ensure effective ear and hearing health. WHO estimates that there are 360 million persons in the world with disabling hearing loss (5.3 % of the world’s population). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and India’s National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO), four in every 1,000 children in India are born with hearing impairment and the incidence of hearing loss in adults and the elderly is increasing at an alarming rate. Half of all cases of hearing loss can be prevented through primary prevention. Some simple strategies for prevention include immunising children against childhood diseases, including measles, meningitis, rubella and mumps. Immunising adolescent girls and women of repro-

ductive age against rubella before pregnancy, screening for and treating syphilis and other infection in pregnant women, improving antenatal and prenatal care including promotion

one suspected NSCN (K) Tripura to increase women police personnel cadre killed in encounter Our Correspondent Imphal | March 2

One suspected NSCN (K) cadre was killed and another wounded when Assam Rifles personnel ambushed a combined team of NSCN (K) and Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) last evening in Aben area of Tamenglong district. According to sources, the attack took place in the forest area of Aben under Tousem subdivision of the district around 6 PM.

Sources added that the two sides engaged in a fierce gun battle which lasted about 20 minutes. Additional forces of Assam Rifles rushed to the site and recovered one M-16 rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition. However, no trace of the slain cadre or the wounded was found. Sources informed that the bodies were apparently carried away by their colleagues following the encounter.

Security forces conducted a massive search operation in the area, but no arrests have been made so far. On February 27, ZUF was involved in an encounter at a place between Longreng and Tamlok villages of Tamenglong district and ZUF had alleged that the Indian Army and the NSCN (IM) had combined forces during the encounter. ZUF also claimed that three army personnel were killed and

another five were wounded in the encounter. In a separate incident, 11 AR recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from near Shakao village area in Green Hill, Ukhrul district yesterday. One Italian made pistol, two country-made pistols, two hand grenades, one lethod bomb, 16 rounds of 9 mm, 18 rounds of AK-47 rifle, one M-16 rifle and one Kenwood radio set were recovered in the search, a police source said.

Assam CM, governor NSCN (IM) counters ZUF allegations clash over poaching issue guwahati, March 2 (ianS): The debate between Assam Governor P.B. Acharya and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi over the killings of one-horned rhinos gained steam on Monday after the latter slammed the chief minister on the first day of the assembly's budget session. The protection of rhinos is the responsibility of the people of Assam. It is the pride of the state. Petty criminals challenging the government of Assam will not be tolerated. I cannot appreciate that fact that rhinos are being killed unabated, Acharya said while speaking to reporters outside the assembly. The Assam governor, who has been continuously expressing his concern over the killing of the animals, had said on Sunday that if those responsible for protection of the heritage animal were not up to the mark, they would do well to quit gracefully. Gogoi, in response, said that the governor should remain within his limits. "There are some limits for everyone and one should not go beyond his limitation," Gogoi said.

Meanwhile, Opposition parties rocked the first day of the budget session of the assembly, forcing the governor to leave the House without completing his speech. Asom Gana Parishad legislators Padma Hazarika and Phani Bhushan Choudhur y objected when the governor, in his speech, mentioned that Assam has achieved good economic growth in the last few years. Other opposition parties, including the BJP, AGP and the AIUDF also objected to the governor's speech. Acharya, later, read out only the last line of his over 50-page speech and left the House.

It is a peculiar situation where once a protector of ZUF now becomes their worst nightmare,” the MIP stated. While stating that in

order to continue and strengthen the policy of political and military dominance, “renegades” are often employed for the furtherance of such policy, it remarked, “However, the success of such instrument could hardly be seen as the camaraderie with the adversary like Assam Rifles are short-lived. Thus, today, all partisan groups created to counter NSCN are head-on with their creator.”

India overhauls monetary policy activity growth slows with inflation target toFactory five-month low in February

MuMbai, March 2 (rEuTErS): The Reserve Bank and the finance ministry have agreed, in the biggest change to monetary policy since opening up India’s economy more than two decades ago, to introduce inflation targetting to rein in a long history of volatile price rises. In a document dated Feb. 20 but published on the ministry website on Monday, the two sides set a consumer inflation target of 4 percent, with a band of plus or minus 2 percentage points, by the financial year ending in March 2017. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will first aim to have consumer inflation fall below 6 percent by January 2016. The changes bring closer to reality a goal pursued relentlessly by RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, who has said the inflation targeting, more commonly seen in developed economies,

was also vital in India. The central bank will be deemed to have missed its target if consumer inflation is at more than 6 percent or at less than 2 percent for three consecutive quarters starting in the 2015/16 fiscal year, the document also showed. The RBI’s governor will determine the country’s key interest rates or any measures needed to achieve that inflation target. There was no mention in the document of a longexpected Monetary Policy Committee, though that is expected to be introduced at a later date. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said on Saturday the government and the RBI had agreed on a new monetary policy framework and promised to change the RBI Act, which is required to implement the changes. Consumer prices rose an annual 5.11 percent compared with a 4.28 per-

cent gain in December, according to data issued on February that changed the base year for measuring inflation to 2012 from 2010. Govt to amend RBI Act to form monetary policy panel

The government will introduce amendments to the Reserve Bank of India Act that would allow for the creation of a monetary policy committee, Finance Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said on Monday. Mehrishi was speaking at a news briefing after the finance ministry struck a pact with the RBI to make targeting inflation the cornerstone of India’s monetary policy, setting a central target for consumer price growth of 4 percent. The act would be amended in the 2015/16 fiscal year after consultations with the RBI and other stakeholders, Mehrishi told reporters.

MuMbai, March 2 (rEuTErS): Indian manufacturing activity expanded at its slowest pace in five months in February as a slowdown in new orders dragged on overall output, a business survey showed on Monday. The HSBC Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index, compiled by Markit, fell for the second consecutive month, to 51.2 in February from 52.9 in January. A reading above 50 separates growth from contraction. “Manufacturing growth in India lost momentum in February, with output and new orders expanding at softer rates than those seen in the past four months,” said Pollyanna De Lima, economist at Markit. The new orders sub-index fell to 51.9, the lowest level in 5 months, from January’s 54.4. The drop underscored softer domestic demand, which also accounted for a slight cut in headcount at firms. The seasonally-adjusted output index also fell to its lowest since September. “On a positive note, foreign orders rose at a strong and accelerated pace, while the PMI remained in positive territory. These factors brighten the prospects for a rebound in output and employment in coming months,” De Lima said. Indeed, February marks the 16th straight month of factory activity expansion. And if India can grow as strongly in the coming fiscal year as the government said in its newly-released budget - expanding by up to 8.5% - that should boost manufacturing. Output prices, or the inflation on goods for consumers, rose at the weakest rate in 5 months as manufacturers offered discounts to secure new business, according to a press statement released by Markit.

NEw DElhi, March 2 (PTi): Government today said industry should help in generating more revenue instead of always seeking tax exemptions as the country has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios globally. “I always see industry ask government, ‘don’t tax us’, but never on how industry can help the government in increasing its revenues through taxes. India’s tax to GDP ratio is around 16 percent, one of the lowest globally,” Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said here at the Nasscom event. He added that countries including Brazil, Nigeria and Uganda have, in fact, a higher tax to GDP ratio. Even the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has around 35 percent, he said. “It is not appropriate for the industry to always talk on taxes and exemptions. You want us to bring down corporate tax, we can, but then you will lose lot of exemptions.

“This will have a lot of effect... Our efforts are to make tax compliance easy and improve ease of doing business in the country,” Sinha said. He agreed however that corporate tax in the country is higher than the ASEAN nations’ average “but the government is trying to bring it down”. He also advised IT firms and their executives to inform the government about blackmoney being stashed abroad. “Now we have very serious punitive measures for people stashing black money,” Sinha added. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced in Union Budget, 2015-16, that a stringent law will be brought in, providing for up to 10 years imprisonment for concealment of income. Speaking at the occasion, Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government is issuing various schemes for the government so that the industry finds it easy to conduct their day-today operations.

ment’s monetary policy framework agreement with the Reserve Bank of India published on Monday, the RBI will aim to bring retail inflation below 6 percent by January 2016, and to around four percent by fiscal 2016-17. “The Reserve Bank will aim to bring inflation below 6 percent by January 2016. The target of financial year 2016-17 and all subsequent years shall be four per cent with a band of (+/-) 2 per cent,” says the agreement published by the finance ministry. Presenting his first full union budget on Saturday Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that “to ensure that our victory over inflation is institutionalized and hence continues, we have concluded a Monetary Policy Framework Agreement with the RBI, as I had promised in my budget speech for 2014-15.” “We will move to amend the RBI Act this year, to provide for a Monetary Policy Committee,” he added. The agreement also requires

missed for a specified period. The RBI is also required to make public every six months a document explaining the sources of inflation and the inflation forecast for the period between six and eight months. The agreement provides two criteria under which RBI would be deemed to have missed the target for inflation. If inflation is more than 6 percent for three consecutive quarters for fiscal 2015-16 and all subsequent years, or if it is less than two percent for three consecutive quarters in 2016-17 and subsequently, then the RBI would be considered as having failed to meet the set target. In such a case, the RBI in a report to the government would give the reasons for its failure, remedial action proposed and an estimated time within which the given target would be reached, the document said. In case of any dispute arising out of interpretation of the agreement, it would be resolved through a meeting between the RBI governor and the government, it added. The new mon-

have eight members, including a finance ministry nominee and external members. The RBI governor will head the panel and, as such, will have the veto power in the new monetary policy framework. Consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation rose to 5.11 percent in January from 4.28 percent in December. RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, known for keeping a hawk eye on inflation, when asked about the lack of forward guidance in February’s monetary policy review, told reporters in Mumbai: “The guidance remains what it was when we cut rates (in January). Further action will depend on developments on the fiscal front and on the disinflationary process.” In this connection, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Saturday extended the target deadline for controlling fiscal deficit to three percent reasoning that insistence on a pre-set timetable to contain the deficit would harm growth prospects. “I will complete the journey to a fiscal deficit of three percent in three

told the Lok Sabha while presenting the NDA government’s first full budget. “Thus, for the next three years, my targets are 3.9 percent for 2015-16, 3.5 percent for 2016-17, and 3.0 percent for 2017-18,” he said. Calling the deficit deadline postponement a “goal missed”, former RBI governor and chairman of the PM’s Economic Advisory Council C.Rangarajan said that “a high level of fiscal deficit leads to growing debt and interest payment burden.” Jaitley has a headache in controlling the fiscal deficit because the tax revenue earned by the central government as a percentage of the GDP has been falling over the years. Tax revenue in 2007-2008 stood at 11.9 percent of the GDP. By 2013-2014, it had fallen to 10 percent of GDP and in 20142015 it is expected to fall further to 9.6 percent, signifying the government`s declining ability to service its accumulated debt. The new monetary policy framework is likely to get constitutional recognition during the course of the next fiscal.

Governor, orgs mourn GM Rongmei’s killing kohiMa, March 2 (MexN): Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya has grieved the tragic death of GM Rongmei, Sub-Divisional Engineer of BSNL posted in Zunheboto, on March 1 in Dimapur. The Governor extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed to God to grant them the strength to bear the irreparable loss. Organisations condemn TUD: The Tenyimi Union, Dimapur (TUD) has stated it was “extremely disturbed” by the killing of GN Rongmei, and bullet wound caused to his niece Rajni, by unidentified assailants on March 1 at their residence at Naga Gaon Colony, Dimapur. In a press statement, TUD president, Khalo Kapfo and

general secretary, Zhasa Vupru stated that both the victims, bona fide members of TUD, were “peace loving citizens and do not deserve such attack for any reason whatsoever.” Further, TUD declared that “perpetrators of such brutal and atrocious acts deserve no place in a civilized society and such acts should be condemned by all peace loving citizens.” Condemning the “cowardly incident”, TUD also urged upon the law enforcing agency to carry out speedy investigation and dispense justice by punishing the culprit(s) involved without fear or favour. Meanwhile, it conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved family members of the deceased and also wished the injured a speedy recovery. ZBN: The Zeliangrong

Baudi Nagaland (ZBN) has also condemned the “cold blooded murder” of GM Rongmei, and serious injury of Rajni Rongmei. “Lt. GM Rongmei was a very dedicated and committed officer who has served in BSNL department for the last 34 years in different capacities,” acknowledged ZBN in a press note. “He was a very honest and sincere officer who rendered his utmost devotion to his service without any bias or colours; he was also posted in Dimapur District and served for 7 years.” The Baudi further appealed for booking the culprits and giving befitting punishment. Meanwhile, informing that Rongmei leaves behind his wife and 4 children, ZBN conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

Naga Gaon Council: The Naga Gaon Council (NGC) has condemned the killing of one of its bona fide members, GM Rongmei. Late GM Rongmei had served the Council as the first treasurer from 1994 to 1997, informed NGC in a press note. Stating that the Council is “shocked and dismayed” by the incident “where an honest and sincere man with no bad records was killed mercilessly in his own house,” the Naga Gaon Council appealed to the district administration, police and the authority concerned to take all measures to identify and apprehend the culprits and reward befitting punishment as per the law. Meanwhile, the Council wished speedy recovery to Rajni and prayed that God

grant comfort and solace to the bereaved family at this hour of grief. SEWA NE-II: Condemning the brutal killing of GM Rongmei, the SC/ST Employees Welfare Association of BSNL North East – II Telecom Circles (SEWA NE-II) today stated that “if there were any differences whatsoever, incident of this magnitude could have been avoided through negotiation or other peaceful means.” Pointing out that BSNL is providing wide telecom services throughout the country and is the only operator to cover many remote regions and difficult parts of the country where private operators have few or no operational base, it said, this kind of incident would hamper the developmental works not only for telecom indus-

try, but other industries as well. The Association further appealed to the district administration and law enforcement agencies to book the perpetrators at the earliest and also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members. NCD: Stating that it was “infuriated” by the killing of GM Rongmei and wounding of his niece, Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) condemned the crime and questioned the reason behind the murder of a sincere Naga officer. In a release, NCD appealed to the law enforcement agencies to unearth the criminal involved and award befitting punishment. It also appealed to the public to join hands to act against such heinous crimes “which attempt to cow down Society.”

Transformation in Action

U

nderstanding and accepting the profound and lasting impact of genuine transformative processes in our lives is the key to fulfilling our own purposes in life as human beings. Transformation is an interactive synergistic journey that involves deep personal shifts and transitions within an individual which then brings about positive changes between other human beings, all of which makes possible more enduring and respectful conditions between human beings, Nature and the Creator. While the individual human’s journey is unique to himself or herself, his or her personal transformations definitely impacts others around them. It is through the continuous praxis of ‘reflection and action’ that people learn to rely on their true feelings that inform how to respond in situations which enables them to live fully in their environments with a new understanding of their surroundings. Transformation can bring about social change when people consciously participate in opening democratic space where they can guide their lives and future by choosing what is best for them. This also involves evolving systems, structures, policies and processes that best represents their true values, worldviews and aspirations. The very values of self-determination – respect, dignity, autonomy - enable a people’s growth to become makers of their own culture and their destinies. The ideas and desire for transformation can be nurtured through life-long learning and education. Ideally formal education systems will nurture a people’s capacity for growth as critical thinkers, pro-actively respond to injustices, open spaces for transformation and creative development. However, due to the State’s overbearing centralizing and hegemonic tendencies, educational policies and institutions all too often have given way to become instruments of the State in carrying out its policies that are passive to injustices, promote corruption and institutional violence and are dependent on the State’s power for survival. EF Schumacher points out that the problems of education are merely reflections of the deeper problems of our time. They are problems that cannot be solved by organizations, administrations or financial resources because education’s dilemma is a metaphysical disease, and the cure therefore must be metaphysical. He further says education which fails to clarify our central convictions is mere training or indulgence that is entrapping or seductive and does not challenge or promote critical thinking processes. And so long as our central convictions are in disorder, the chaos will grow worse. In today’s modern context our society and educational system teaches us that solution lies in progress – better and faster technology, having more machines and superior intelligence. Subsequently, when we as a society fail, so often we place blame on these machines and on technology! But the crisis and the fault is not what is wrong with machines, but what is wrong with wrong values and a misguided society. Educational institutions need to liberate themselves from the powers that be. Education that supports human beings’ fullest development is a political act that involves an awakening process to understand the surrounding realities which stands for justice, dignity and respect. Transformation can only take place under conditions of true humility, sincerity and modesty that creates conditions for enduring peace with justice.

Sin as the Cause for National Downfall

Thought-Provoking Question: Has God denied political sovereignty to the Naga people because of our own sins? What does God say? Read Hosea 4:1-6 During the time of the prophet Hosea, the religious leaders failed to teach the law of God to the people. They failed to serve as the moral conscience for their society (Hos. 4--6). So, the common people turned out to do whatever they saw fit in their own eyes. They set up their rulers without God’s approval (8:4). And their rulers were no better in their moral standard: they were land-grabbers, liars, adulterers, and given to wine (5:10; 7:3-6); they were totally corrupt and useless (5:4; 10:3-4, 13; 12:7). They were unfit and unworthy as a nation. The ten tribes of Israel were gullible and senseless (7:11a). Their rulers were opportunists. One year they turned to Egypt; but the next year they switched to Assyria (7:11b; 12:1). They easily mixed with outsiders, but they had no idea that they were putting their identity and future at risk (7:8-9; John 4:9). So, they would be swallowed up among the nations (8:8). They would become a laughing-stock in Egypt and also captives of Assyria (7:16; 9:1-3; 2 Kings 17). They would lost their national sovereignty: “For the Israelites will live many days without king or princes, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or idol” (Hos. 3:4). When faced with severe military pressures from Assyria, even the people of Judah would not turn to their God for help. Instead, they decided for a political union with the Assyrians and settled for a puppet state under the Assyrian kingdom (2 Kings 16:7-9). The reason for the loss of Israel’s national sovereignty was not Assyria. God says, “Your sins have been your downfall” (Hos. 14:1). But if they would repent again and turn to God, He would still restore them to the place of blessing (3:5; 14:1-9). Okay, so now what? When our parents’ generation asserted themselves to be a sovereign nation in the 1950s, they had deep faith in God and had no doubt that He would make their common aspiration a reality. But along the way, some abandoned the foundation our parents had laid when they chose to accept India’s offer of statehood. Added to this, we have compounded our problems with our collective sins. All these have brought us to where we are today. But as if our political aspiration could still be fulfilled by others, today some of us are looking up to India while others are assuming that China is what we need. But the question is, where exactly are we putting our trust: on nations or on God? Prayer: Lord, we have fallen short in so many areas. Forgive us. Look on us in mercy, not judgment. I believe You are not finished with us. May You be pleased to restore us to the plan You have for our people. Amen. Battle of Manila: Survivors keep memory alive

S

eventy years have not dulled the memories of survivors of the monthlong Battle of Manila. The mass killings by Japanese forces, the loved ones lost and the desperation are etched in their minds, as is the elation when American forces finally rescued them in the closing months of World War II. The U.S. liberated the Philippine capital from the Japanese, but not before Manila was destroyed and more than 100,000 civilians killed. About 16,000 Japanese soldiers and 1,000 U.S. troops also died in the fighting from Feb. 3 to March 3, 1945. Manila was the second-most devastated city in World War II after Warsaw, Poland, said historian Ricardo Jose of the University of the Philippines. He called the city "one of the worst battlefields in the world." When the Japanese invaded the Philippines, then an American colony, in 1941, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, commander of the U.S. forces there, declared Manila an "open city" to spare it from destruction. But when the Americans returned, the Japanese decided to fight to the last man, from building to building, and burned entire city blocks. Civilians died from malnutrition and American shelling, but mostly, historians agree, at the hands of Japanese troops. Four survivors shared their stories with The Associated Press: Roderick Hall was 9 when the Japanese occupied Manila. The British boy and his family lived in a home in the Malate district, though his father was interned with thousands of foreigners at the University of Santo Tomas. In late January 1945, before American forces closed in on the capital, the Japanese barged into the family home, searched every room and found what the raiders claimed was an illegal radio transmitter. Hall, now a business investor, said it was just a short-wave radio the family listened to for news outside Manila. All members of the household — including Hall and his brother, his mother, his grandmother, an uncle, and aunt and the family's helpers — were brought to Manila's Masonic Temple. Hall, then 12, and his brother and the house helpers were later released. They were allowed to bring food to their mother and the others for several days. Then the Japanese stopped the visits. About 200 people were massacred at the temple, but Hall learned only recently from a war document that his mother was listed among dozens executed at Fort Santiago, a centuries-old Spanish garrison used by occupation troops to torture and kill suspected guerrillas. For a while, Hall had hoped that his mother somehow escaped and was safe with the guerrillas. "About two years later, I was away in school. My father wrote and said, 'I am going to marry again.' And that's when I started to cry and broke down and had to admit to myself that this hope that my mother was alive somewhere was no longer the case." For someone who was 4 when the Japanese began bombing raids on Manila in December 1941, Juan "Johnny" Rocha remembers a lot from the war. Perhaps because, when those first bombs were falling, he was being rushed for an appendectomy — not in the operating room, but to the hospital basement, where it was safer. Rocha, who later would become the Philippine ambassador to Spain, once saw a man hanging dead from a telephone pole, with a sign that said he was a thief. He remembers his family using huge wads of devalued Japanese wartime currency to buy basic commodities, and privately singing "God Bless

e are overwhelmed by information. A 24/7 news cycle and constant social media compete for our attention, while society demands that we explain our decisions logically, like a storyboard of causes and consequences. In a bid to escape, we turn to yet more sources of information, such as self-help books and lifestyle advice columns. They tell us to meditate. To walk 10,000 steps each day. Yet relying solely on guidance from external sources overshadows our internal decision making tools. According to life fulfilment guru Oprah: ‘‘Learning to trust your instincts, using your intuitive sense of what's best for you, is paramount for any lasting success. I've trusted the still, small voice of intuition my entire life. And the only time I've made mistakes is when I didn't listen.” In Civilization and Its Discontents Freud argues that people are instinctively geared to be aggressive, with the ability to love only if there remains another group to direct anger at. This bleak interpretation of mankind leaves little room for the positive instincts of compassion which sit equally deep within the human soul. What about the parental instinct which causes humans, along with hedgehogs and cheetahs (thought to have some of the strongest caring instincts in the animal kingdom) to care for their young? How about the instinct which drives us to form deep connections with those around us, or to reach out to help those in need? Although the existence of destructive human impulses can't be denied, our positive instincts should be celebrated and cultivated. Take the case of homelessness for instance. Instinct tells us that nobody should have to spend their days and

America," and "I Love My Own, My Native Land" at home. "The most remarkable thing was whenever we passed in front of a Japanese sentry we had to all bow, and if we didn't bow, he would slap us or kick us or whatever," he said. As fighting in Manila intensified, his family decided to flee, but tragedy struck before they could. When a shell landed on a neighbor's house, shrapnel cut through an adobe wall and sliced off the top of his mother's head, killing her. Rocha's father lost 13 relatives when the Japanese herded them inside the German Club with hundreds of others, then torched them all alive, Rocha said. Rocha saw Japanese soldiers shoot a man because he didn't raise his hands, and a woman screaming as she was bayoneted against a tree. "Christians are taught to forgive, but we are never taught to forget. We cannot forget," he said. "All we need is that they recognize what they did and apologize." Joan Bennett Chapman, a Philippine-born American, remembers being so deprived at the Santo Tomas prison camp that powdered milk was a special treat. When her mother was able to give her a spoonful, she would nibble on it on the steps of the large staircase in the main building. Chapman's father, Roy Bennett, was the first editor-in-chief of the pre-war Manila Daily Bulletin. He was tortured by the Japanese before he and his family were interned. Chapman, an 80-year-old former lawyer, said internees looked like "walking skeletons" and starvation deaths were routine. When American tanks crashed through the university gates on Feb. 3, 1945, she heard "people being hysterically happy." "The soldiers were out throwing candy bars down to the people, and the people who were starving were scrambling for them. It was the happiest kind of chaos you can imagine," she said. The Japanese camp commandant refused to surrender and was shot as he tried to reach for what was believed to be a grenade in his backpack, she said.

His body was dragged to the main building, where some internees spat and urinated on it, she said. Chapman wanted to spit on the body, too. Her father, who was abused by the occupiers for years and would be tormented by the war for the rest of his life, forbade it. James Litton, then 11, heard thunderous explosions the day after the Americans reached Manila. The Japanese were blowing up bridges to keep U.S. troops from advancing. Days later, the Japanese began burning houses in the Malate district, where his family lived. Litton's fourstory home was made of concrete, so it became an emergency shelter for about 120 homeless neighbors. Then the Japanese ordered everyone to leave. As civilians hurried toward the nearby Philippine General Hospital for shelter, a 15-year-old girl stepped on a Japanese land mine. "After the dust had settled, all I could see was a torso, legless, without the left arm. She was moaning still but her blood was coagulating with dust," he said. His mother lay unconscious nearby and his brother was wounded in the face. A cousin carried his mother and they ran toward the hospital. Japanese snipers were targeting people entering the main gate, so they climbed over a fence. Finally, on Feb. 17, Americans reached the area. "I was just filled with happiness. My chest was bursting with joy realizing that we had survived. We're alive! We're alive!" said Litton, now 81. As they moved out of the hospital, he saw the body of a Japanese soldier lying on the street. "What I can't forget is when we were walking, an elderly man got an adobe stone and with all his might threw it at this dead Japanese," and cursed, he said. Later, as a textile businessman, Litton often visited Japan. "I never met a more hospitable, a more cultured, a more accommodating people," he said. "How could a people like this have produced an army as barbaric as the one that came here and Nanking? ... Nobody has yet explained that to me."

To create positive change, trust your instincts Sonya Likhtman

At a time when fear and terror seems pervasive, individual and group instincts can triumph nights on the street with little food and zero comfort. What’s more, ending homelessness makes logical sense: enabling people to live with dignity in a home will make them healthier, stronger and ultimately more able to contribute positively to society. If our individual instincts could be scaled up to the level of politics, homelessness would end. How about the challenge of creating inspiring workplaces? Intuitively, we say that all people should feel respected, valued and integrated in the workplace. Equally, countless studies have shown that people are more productive and fulfilled when they are empowered and included in decision making. My recent research in the Mondragon Cooperative in the Spanish Basque Country revealed that many workerowners of the cooperative’s 281 firms are generally happy, motivated and proud at work. They attributed this specifically to Mondragon’s values and practices, such as ensuring that the highest salary within the cooperative is only six times greater than the lowest salary.

This incredible financial commitment is echoed in human relations: during a tour around the offices and factories, Mikel Lezamiz, Director of Corporate Dissemination, greeted every cleaner by name. His instinct informed his actions towards all colleagues in the workplace. Divestment from the fossil fuel industry similarly fulfils instinctive as well as logical criteria. According to the organisation 350.org and Fossil Free, 80% of known fossil fuel reserves must remain in the ground for us to avoid catastrophic warming beyond two degrees. Clearly, for the sake of ourselves, our planet and future generations, our fossil fuel frenzy has to end. All instincts point to the urgency of socio-economic transformation to renewable energy, a low carbon economy and more sustainable modes of consumption. Why then, when the intuitive case for positive change is so strong, can it seem beyond reach? Problems such as poverty, inequality and climate change are deep-rooted and complex. There are issues of

distributed responsibility and dilemmas which have no unequivocally ‘right’ solutions. While personal instincts may be strong, knowing how to translate them into action is not always easy. Scaling them up to institutional and governmental decisions remains an even greater challenge. Nonetheless, at a time when fear and terror may appear pervasive, the positive instincts of individuals and groups can triumph. Think of Malala Yousafzai, whose advocacy for female education has disseminated a ripple of hope to young girls across the world. Think of the nurses and coordinators working tirelessly to cure victims of Ebola. Think of Lassana Bathily, who risked his life to protect a group of hostages during the recent attack on the kosher supermarket in Paris. When these people listened intimately to their instincts, they heard that compassion and creativity can triumph over hatred and injustice. Humans are social beings, highly influenced by the behaviours and attitudes of others. What may begin as a few individuals following their instincts can progressively transform society’s perspectives and behaviours at large. The abolitionist, feminist and civil rights movements are clear examples of this social power, though their battles are not over yet. So how can we know which instincts to trust, when we are overwhelmed by arguments and emotions? We must strive to showcase our instincts of compassion and ingenuity, whilst putting those of selfishness and greed to rest. This demands courage and persistence. It necessitates time and dedication. As past and present moments of transformation have shown, it will be worthwhile in the long run.

rom the ground in this extreme northern part of Antarctica, spectacularly white and blinding ice seems to extend forever. What can't be seen is the battle raging thousands of feet (hundreds of meters) below to re-shape Earth. Water is eating away at the Antarctic ice, melting it where it hits the oceans. As the ice sheets slowly thaw, water pours into the sea — 130 billion tons of ice (118 billion metric tons) per year for the past decade, according to NASA satellite calculations. That's the weight of more than 356,000 Empire State Buildings, enough ice melt to fill more than 1.3 million Olympic swimming pools. And the melting is accelerating. In the worst case scenario, Antarctica's melt could push sea levels up 10 feet (3 meters) worldwide in a century or two, recurving heavily populated coastlines. Parts of Antarctica are melting so rapidly it has become "ground zero of global climate change without a doubt," said Harvard geophysicist Jerry Mitrovica. Here on the Antarctic peninsula, where the continent is warming the fastest because the land sticks out in the warmer ocean, 49 billion tons of ice (nearly 45 billion metric tons) are lost each year, according to NASA. The water warms from below, causing the ice to retreat on to land, and then the warmer air takes over. Temperatures rose 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) in the last half century, much faster than Earth's average, said Ricardo Jana, a glaciologist for the Chilean Antarctic Institute. As chinstrap penguins waddled behind him, Peter Convey of the British Antarctic Survey reflected on changes he could see on Robert Island, a small-scale example and perhaps early warning signal of what's happening to the peninsula and rest of the continent as a whole. "I was last here 10 years ago," Convey said during a rare sunny day on the island, with temperatures just above freezing. "And if you compare what I saw back then to now, the basic difference due to warming is that the permanent patches of snow and ice are smaller. They're still there behind me, but they're smaller than they were." Robert Island hits all the senses: the stomachturning smell of penguin poop; soft moss that invites the rare visitor to lie down, as if on a water bed; brown mud, akin to stepping in gooey chocolate. Patches of the moss, which alternates from fluorescent green to rust red, have grown large enough to be football fields. Though 97 percent of the Antarctic Peninsula is still covered with ice, entire valleys are now free of it, ice is thinner elsewhere and glaciers have retreated, Convey said. Dressed in a big red parka and sky blue hat, plant biologist Angelica Casanova has to take her gloves off to collect samples, leaving her hands bluish purple from the cold. Casanova says she can't help but notice the changes since she began coming to the island in 1995. Increasingly, plants are taking root in the earth and stone deposited by retreating glaciers, she says. "It's interesting because the vegetation in some way responds positively. It grows more," she said, a few steps from a sleeping Weddell seal. "What is regrettable is

that all the scientific information that we're seeing says there's been a lot of glacier retreat and that worries us." Just last month, scientists noticed in satellite images that a giant crack in an ice shelf on the peninsula called Larsen C had grown by about 12 miles (20 kilometers) in 2014. Ominously, the split broke through a type of ice band that usually stops such cracks. If it keeps going, it could cause the breaking off of a giant iceberg somewhere between the size of Rhode Island and Delaware, about 1,700 to 2,500 square miles (4,600 to 6,400 square kilometers), said British Antarctic Survey scientist Paul Holland. And there's a small chance it could cause the entire Scotland-sized Larsen C ice shelf to collapse like its sister shelf, Larsen B, did in a dramatic way in 2002. A few years back, scientists figured Antarctica as a whole was in balance, neither gaining nor losing ice. Experts worried more about Greenland; it was easier to get to and more noticeable, but once they got a better look at the bottom of the world, the focus of their fears shifted. Now scientists in two different studies use the words "irreversible" and "unstoppable" to talk about the melting in West Antarctica. Ice is gaining in East Antarctica, where the air and water are cooler, but not nearly as much as it is melting to the west. "Before Antarctica was much of a wild card," said University of Washington ice scientist Ian Joughin. "Now I would say it's less of a wild card and more scary than we thought before." Over at NASA, ice scientist Eric Rignot said the melting "is going way faster than anyone had thought. It's kind of a red flag." What's happening is simple physics. Warm water

eats away at the ice from underneath. Then more ice is exposed to the water, and it too melts. Finally, the ice above the water collapses into the water and melts. Climate change has shifted the wind pattern around the continent, pushing warmer water farther north against and below the western ice sheet and the peninsula. The warm, more northerly water replaces the cooler water that had been there. It's only a couple degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the water that used to be there, but that makes a huge difference in melting, scientists said. The world's fate hangs on the question of how fast the ice melts. At its current rate, the rise of the world's oceans from Antarctica's ice melt would be barely noticeable, about one-third of a millimeter a year. The oceans are that vast. But if all the West Antarctic ice sheet that's connected to water melts unstoppably, as several experts predict, there will not be time to prepare. Scientists estimate it will take anywhere from 200 to 1,000 years to melt enough ice to raise seas by 10 feet, maybe only 100 years in a worst case scenario. If that plays out, developed coastal cities such as New York and Guangzhou could face up to $1 trillion a year in flood damage within a few decades and countless other population centers will be vulnerable. "Changing the climate of the Earth or thinning glaciers is fine as long as you don't do it too fast. And right now we are doing it as fast as we can. It's not good," said Rignot, of NASA. "We have to stop it; or we have to slow it down as best as we can."

Detaining the president’s daughter andrew stroehlein and steve swerdlow

A year on from her disappearance from public life, what does the treatment of Gulnara Karimova reveal about Uzbekistan’s rights crisis?

A

year ago, the daughter of Uzbekistan’s authoritarian president disappeared from public life. Arrested under corruption allegations in February 2014 and apparently detained at her Tashkent home ever since, Gulnara Karimova – former ambassador, singer, fashion guru, social media star, and business tycoon – remains in a kind of sealed limbo, apparently unable to communicate directly with the outside world. Karimova’s treatment over the last 12 months is far superior to that of thousands of other people in Uzbekistan suffering severe human rights abuses. Yet her high-profile case provides a telling insight into the dire state of human rights in Uzbekistan today.

The black sheep Islam Karimov’s daughter became the ruling family’s black sheep at some point in 2013, railing publicly, mostly on Twitter, against those in Uzbekistan’s political elite Karimova felt had crossed her. At first, her concerns were primarily with corruption allegations thrown at her in several European countries. Criminal cases have been opened against her and her associates in various jurisdictions, including for money laundering in Switzerland. In response, she accused others in the political elite of dirty dealing. Later, in 2013, she started mentioning human rights for the first time in her long career, accusing the country’s feared security services, commonly known by its acronym, the SNB, of torture. Even though Karimova’s statements almost exclusively concerned the supposed illtreatment of her close associates, the public acknowledgment by a member of Uzbekistan’s ruling elite that such abuses are regularly committed by law enforcement bodies was unprecedented. This may have been the final straw for a father known for defiantly refusing to acknowl-

edge any criticism, whether domestic or international, of his government’s appalling human rights record. A political earthquake In mid-February last year, Karimova’s home was raided – a political earthquake for Uzbekistan given her position in the ruling family and her previous formal roles with the government. By her account, security forces threatened her daughter, badly beat her long-term partner before arresting him and another close associate; and took several others into custody on charges of corruption. A military court in Tashkent sentenced her long-term partner Rustam Madumarov and business associate Gayane Avakyan to 7 and 6 years imprisonment, respectively, although it is unclear whether they are serving these sentences behind bars. A few days later, she was apparently under house arrest and has supposedly been there ever since, only able to leak out a few messages to the outside world through her son, Islam Karimov, Jr., and through a PR firm – both in the UK. Many years of speculation that her father might tap her to run as his handpicked successor for president in 2015 ended in January, when Karimov himself announced he would run for a fourth consecutive term as president, even though the constitution only allows him two. No sympathy Many people, familiar with her his-

tory, are unconcerned about her situation. She had, after all, been infamously tagged in a WikiLeaks cable as the ‘single most-hated person’ in Uzbekistan. Karimova was an integral part of this government for many years and denied its systematic torture, its use of the forced labour of children and adults, and its mass killing of largely peaceful protesters in Andijan in 2005. As Uzbekistan’s representative to the UN in Geneva, where the UN Human Rights Council is located, she never uttered a word in defence of human rights, despite our calls on the government to end its human rights abuses and our numerous exchanges on Twitter directly with her imploring her to speak up. She was contemptuous of universal human rights at every step of her career – until her own rights were threatened. Uzbekistan is holding dozens of journalists, human rights activists, and opposition figures on politically motivated charges; and thousands of peaceful religious believers have been locked up in horrific prisons and tortured, some for decades. Karimova’s conditions under house arrest remain murky, but they are certainly far better than those of longterm political prisoners in the country’s vile gulags. One example is the rights activist Isroiljon Kholdorov, in prison since 2006 for speaking to the media about the mass graves in Andijan. Uzbek security ser-

vices kidnapped Kholdorov from neighboring Kyrgyzstan, where he had fled for safety, and held him incommunicado in a room with boarded windows for six months before bringing him to trial on trumped-up charges. Rights for all Still, Karimova’s rights, like everyone else’s, should be protected. She has a right to a lawyer, and it’s unclear whether she has one. She has a right not be held in this sort of pre-trial limbo detention for such a long period. She has a right to a fair trial, too. But that is virtually impossible in Uzbekistan, where the judiciary is heavily dependent on the executive branch and where the independent legal profession has been dismantled through what have been described as legal ‘reforms. Karimova also has a right to free expression – at the very least through a lawyer – to address, among other things, her current conditions and whereabouts. By all indications she is prohibited from doing so. Even those of us who didn’t agree with the things she was saying publicly in 2013 can still agree she had, and has, a right to say them, just like everyone else in Uzbekistan has, despite the government’s persistent refusal to acknowledge that right. Also, Karimova’s story does not only concern her personal rise and fall. It is reasonably clear there has been a purge of those associated with her, not only those in her closest circle, but even employees of her businesses and foundations. Some young people have told Human Rights Watch they are being punished for having even a very tenuous connection to her once vast empire. It appears that their rights are also being trampled, and their individual cases ought to be impartially investigated. Ultimately, Karimova’s case is about much more than her. It is indicative of Uzbekistan’s desperate human rights crisis, and underlines the need for robust international attention to its myriad abuses such as the absence of civil and political freedoms, torture, and endemic corruption. If the Uzbek government can trample the rights of even the president’s own daughter, then what hope is there for the rights of ordinary people?

very creation has its beginning and ending. So let us begin with the genesis (origin) the creation of the universe in genesis chap.1 where god created the universe in just within 6 days out of nowhere but with his mighty super power and Adam being the first man on earth. But according to science, most accepted theory to explain the origin of universe is the BIG-BANG theory. According to this theory, universe had an explosive beginning. Universe originated about 15 billion years ago by a big bang (thermonuclear explosion) of a dense entity. Large-scale collision between protons, neutrons and electrons give rise to atoms of hydrogen. Hydrogen fuses into progressively heavier atoms. The original gaseous cloud spread out into space and divided into larger and smaller masses, forming stellar system and stars. Atoms → molecules → cells → Tissues →organs → organs system→ individuals. It is believed that the earth is appx.4,800(4.8 ×10⁹ ) years old. Living organism may have arisen as early as 4,000 million years ago. The fossils remains of bacteria similar to those known today have been dated with some certainty to be atleast 3,300 million years old. Whatever the creation may be. What uppermost in my mind with a volley of questions and a cloud of storms in my mind is how long will our earth continues to last or how many years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds left for the destruction. When I say destruction (the dooms day) or the second coming which our solar system including the earth is going to face a dead blow from the neutron star. Scientist believed that our entire solar system including earth will be burned up and teared them apart by these neutron star. So what is these neutron star? A neutron star is a stellar corps made of neutron. A star much massive than the sun burns through its fuels extremely rapidly and at the end of its life when run of its fuels, the entire corps of the star simply collapsed. These creates one types of supernova in a massive stellar explosion. The gravitational pulls is extremely strong that means as object comes closer to the object they teared them apart. Scientist believed that the neutron star is readily heading toward our solar system. So far what it is known to the science is that we can’t blow it up, we can’t change its direction or we can’t gets out its way but to face the horrific consequences of the neutron star. The end of the world i.e the doom day device is heading towards us rapidly approaching, the beginning of the end. The question is where does these neutron star comes from? Scientist believed that some 60,000 million years ago, star at the age of our galaxy collapsed and huge explosion called supernova. The violence of these event catapult the dead remain are the journey of thousands of years, along its way it is causing devastating and will occur sooner or later within 75 years and the earth will be completely destroyed. Next question is what will happen as the neutron star approaches towards our solar system? Scientist have said as the neutron star comes into the system matter bits of rocks, asteroids, comets as name in the solar system will be attracted towards the object. It can even alter the orbit and be more elliptical. This would mean that our season would be extremely different and there will be more and more natural calamities. Besides the artificial calamities created by man. These are some of the natural calamities which have occur in 2014 alone. 1. Feb: The biggest eruption of Indonesia’s volcano Mt. Sinabung. 2. May: A landslide triggered by heavy rain buries the village of Hobo Barik in north-eastern Afghanistan. 3. Aug: Landslide and flooding due to torrential rain in Nepal. : 6.5 magnitude earthquake that had struck a part of south-western China. 4. Sept: Nearly half a million people are hit by the deadliest flood in Pakistan history. : Unprecedented flash flood leaves a trail of destruction and suffering in Kashmir valley. Scientist believed as the neutron star approached the earth, the core and crust of the earth it will get heated up and the radiation from the star will be worse than the ground zero of the Hiroshima bomb. (2 Peter 3:10,12) With these global warming and cooling the only natural habitat of man can face more and more consequences like drought, flood, diseases, famine etc. NASA scientist have said that 2014 is the hottest in 10 years. With these gradual global warming at these present scenario even the agricultural cultivation will be a failure, because pollen grains are sensitive to hot temperature. The pollen grains are likely to be killed in the temp. ranging between 42-48˚c in case of jowar and 40-44˚c in case of rice. When the temp. become too cold the pollen grains will definitely die in the temp. between 0-6˚c in case of rice and 0-2˚c in case wheat, and will definitely end up in famine all over the world. Even the reproduction in human will be a failure if the temp. increases. Next is can we really evacuate from these earth? Or who will be Lot or Noah family who escaped destruction. Certainly, there are stories in Bible and other religion about humanity being wiped out periodically throughout human history. In Bible we came across the flood of Noah, where god destroyed everything on earth that has breathed leaving behind only the god chosen family i.e Noah family (Genesis chap.7-8). Lot escaped destruction when lord destroyed the sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis chap.19). Our only option would be to look for another solar system to get completely away from these destruction. But how could it be possible? According to scientist the only option to escape from these destruction is to build a huge collosial spaceship and fly 6-8 light years away to another star and find a star which can support life or humanity next home. Last but not the least in conclusion, if these neutron star is really heading towards us what humanity can do in these 75 years spans of time and escape these horrific destruction and rebuild human civilization in the new world?

Furore in Rajya Sabha over Mufti's comments

Stories of unusual entrepreneurs highlighted in a book New Delhi, March 2 (iaNS): A young girl from Jammu and Kashmir is reviving numdah, the popular rug-making technique, a man from Coimbatore has created a machine that can make cheap but good-quality sanitary napkins, a social enterprise in Gurgaon is revolutionising the domestic housekeeping sector. These lesser-known stories about independent entrepreneurs who are changing the face of India individually by working on issues that are often ignored by the state but are an integral part of our social ecosystem are highlighted in journalist-author Hindol Sengupta's new book “Recasting India”. “There are millions of millions of entrepreneurs doing wonderful jobs in India and if the state can clean up the process, imagine what kind of growth India would be touching in coming years,” Sengupta told IANS in an interview. “My argument in this book us that in spite of all these problems, look at the wonderful things happening in India and if the problems are solved, how much more can be done,” he added. Author of, among others, “The Liberals”, Sengupta deliberately chose to write stories of these unsung heroes who are diligently and silently working towards aking society a better place for the marganalised communities or people caught in conflict zones. He feels the country is deliberately painting a negative image of India and this could possibly be done because there is some “hidden agenda”. “Why are we so negative? Whose agenda is being fulfilled by painting India in negative light? I am sure someone's agenda is being fulfilled,” he said. “We have always sold and romanticised poverty to the world and that is why no one wants to tell positive stories about India,” he added. And the answer to this question lies in the chapter “Business Models in The World's Most Dangerous Place” where the author has shared many inspirational stories from the Kashmir Valley, which has been a conflict zone since 1989. Sengupta also elaborates on the wonderful work done by the Jammu and Kashmir Bank, especially during the early 1990s when militancy was at its peak. So he questions why no one in the media has so far reported many of the good things that have happened in the Valley. “The Indian elite will not let you tell a positive story about Kashmir. Has anyone told you India's best bank is in Kashmir and is run by Kashmiris? They risked their own lives to get the business going during militancy years,” he said. “Why doesn't anyone talk about it? I want to ask this question - why are we so negative,” he asked. The book has also been shortlisted for Hayek Book Prize and with it, the author hopes to introduce the world to the good things happening in India.

New Delhi, March 2 (iaNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's controversial comments giving credit to Pakistan for the peaceful assembly election in the state created a furore in Rajya Sabha Monday, with the opposition terming it anti-national. "The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir was sworn in yesterday in the presence of prime minister (Narendra Modi), L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and BJP president Amit Shah... A press conference was held soon after in which the chief minister made a statement which was most controversial and hurt the nation," Congress leader Shantaram Naik said, raising the issue in the house. "He said elections were peaceful because of the forces 'us paar' (on the other side). He indicated Pakistan. Then (he said) because of millitants and because of Hurriyat... He gave credit to these three for peaceful elections in Jammu and Kashmir," Naik said. Opposition members were heard chanting "shame shame" as the Congress member said this. "This statement is antinational. BJP spokespersons immediately went into action to salvage the situation and said it is an 'untrue' statement. BJP was embarrased. I will also say

Rajnath dissociates centre, BJP from Mufti's remark New Delhi, March 2 (iaNS): Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday dissociated the government and the BJP from the remarks of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who gave credit to militants and Pakistan for the smooth conduct of assembly elections in the state. The Congress and some other opposition parties staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha demanding a resolution on the issue. Raising the matter in the Lok Sabha after the question hour, Congress member K.C. Venugopal condemned Sayeed's remarks. The opposition members also demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Venugopal said Sayeed had remarked that he had apprised Modi of his views. Modi Sunday attended the oath-taking of Peothis is a violation of oath of office. Within minutes (of taking oath) he is violation the oath by showing allegiance to certain forces which are anti-national," said Naik. "Secondly what is the role of election commission. It is election commission and security forces and people of Jammu and Kashmir who made this election possible. J&K chief minister did not give credit to any of them." He also targeted the state government and said: "One

ple's Democratic Party-Bharatiya Janata Party government in Jammu. The Congresss member said that credit for smooth conduct of assembly elections should go to the people of state, security forces and the people of the state. "We expect a clarification from prime minister," he said. Rajnath Singh said: "The government and the party fully dissociates themselves from the remarks." The minister, who was repeatedly interrupted by opposition members, said that he had come to the house after talking to prime minister. "What I am saying, I am saying with deliberation and with consent of prime minister," Rajnath Singh said. He said the assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir had been

of the ministers, his brother is in Hurriyat, no problem... his wife is Pakistani, still I don't know how they are going to tackle this issue." "During election campaign, Modi very clearly said 370 par kam se kam charcha to karo (atleast discuss article 370)," he added, asking government for an explanation. He was joined by Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader K.C. Tyagi who said BJP has murdered the ideology of Syama Prasad Mukherjee, founder of BJP's predeces-

held in a conducive atmosphere. "I want to give credit for this to the election commission, armed forces and paramilitary forces," he said. The minister said there had been no secret talk between the prime minister and chief minister and no contentious issue was discussed. Sayeed had stoked a controversy on Sunday, saying that people from across the border had contributed to making the atmosphere conducive for elections. He also gave credit to the Hurriyat and militants, saying that if they had done something, it would not have been a smooth election with large participation of people. Sayeed also pitched for taking Hurriyat Conference and separatists on board in talks on the Kashmir problem. Congress leader in Lok Sabha

sor Bharatiya Jana Sangh. "The prime minister was there in the oath taking ceremony. Mufti sahab was taking oath. At that time there were two flags on the dais, one of Jammu and Kashmir and one of India," said Tyagi. "Mukherjee sahab was martyred against this, and yesterday they murdered his ideology," the JD-U leader said. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi tried to salvage the situation, saying the

Mallikarjun Kharge said that the government should bring a resolution to send a message to the new chief minister over his remarks. "He (Sayeed) will know that the entire house is against his remarks. It (smooth elections) happened because of people of the state, the government servants, but they are saying it happened due to Pakistan. The prime minister should come and condemn the remarks. What has the chief minister told the prime minister," Kharge said. Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav also sought a statement from prime minister but Rajnath Singh said there was no question of such a statement. Opposition members including those belonging to the Congress, Left parties and Trinamool Congress then staged a walk out.

credit for peaceful election goes to the people of the state more than anyone else. "All I have to say is that people of Jammu, Kashmir, Leh and Kargil have shown their respect for democracy and the way they participated in Lok Sabha and assembly elections, we salute them," Naqvi said. "If credit goes to someone, it goes to the people first and election commission and the local and central security forces which helped in free and fair election," he said.

Within hours of taking oath as chief minister Sunday, Sayeed said: "There is Hurriyat, there are militants. If they had done something, it would not have been such an election, there would not have been such participation." He also said that people from across the border also contributed to making the atmosphere conducive. Sayeed also pitched for taking Hurriyat Conference and separatists on board in talks on the Kashmir problem.

Ram Temple will be built through other means: Union Minister Ballia, March 2 (PTi): Stressing that the ruling BJP has not gone back on the Ram temple issue, Union minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Hansraj Gangaram Ahir on Monday said the temple would come up in Ayodhya and "it will be built through other means". "BJP government has not gone back on the Ram Temple issue... Though it is not in our manifesto but it is the matter of our honour and dignity," Ahir who

was here to take part in programme at Duha Bihra village told newspersons. "The sadhus and mahants are doing their work in this regard. Hindu and Muslim leaders are also meeting the government," he said, adding "It is decided that whenever it happens it will be temple which will be built in Ayodhya and not Masjid". When asked further, he said it is not right to keep on talking about Ram Temple issue all the time. "It is

however decided that it will be built through other means," he said without elaborating. The minister said the government which has come with the aim of 'sabka-saath, sabka-vikas' is working for the welfare of farmers and the unemployed. To a question on differences of the party with Shiv Sena, he said though BJP has 282 MPs it does not have any arrogance and is working together with all

its allies. "Senior leaders are in touch with the Shiv Sena and they will come to understand this soon," the minister said. When sought his views on the controversial statement of the new chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Saeed, Ahir said "Muftiji has to clarify his position...", meanwhile wondering how Pakistan can help establish democracy in India.

Dec 16 gang rape: Convict blames victim New Delhi, March 2 (iaNS): In a shocking comment, one of the convicts of the December 16, 2012 gang rape on a moving bus in Delhi, has blamed the 23-year-old woman for the fatal sexual assault on her. Mukesh Singh, one of the convicts in the gang rape case said women who go out at night had only themselves to blame if they attracted the attention of molesters. In an interview from jail for a BBC documentary to be aired on March 8, Mukesh Singh said: "A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy." He was quoted as saying by British daily The Telegraph that had the victim and her male friend not tried to fight back, the gang would not have resorted to a savage beating. Describing the gruesome incident as an "accident", he said:

"When being raped, she shouldn't fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they'd have dropped her off after 'doing her', and only hit the boy." The interview will be aired by BBC Four on its Storyville programme "India's Daughter" on Sunday to coincide with the International Women's Day. The physiotherapy student was raped and assaulted with an iron rod after she was tricked into boarding an unregistered private bus to go home after watching a movie with a male friend. Her male companion was badly beaten up and could not come to her rescue while the assault was being carried out in the bus. The two were later dumped naked and bleeding on the roadside. The woman died 13 days after the attack from injuries. Four attackers, including

Mukesh Singh, were convicted and sentenced to death last year. Judge Yogesh Khanna said the victim was "tortured till the very end" and the case fell into the "rarest of rare category", which justified capital punishment. The Supreme Court has stayed the death sentences. Mukesh Singh, who was 26 at the time of the attack, was driving the bus. "You can't clap with one hand it takes two hands," he was quoted as saying in the interview. "A decent girl won't roam around at 9 o'clock at night. A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy. Boy and girl are not equal. Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night, doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes. About 20% of girls are good." He also claimed that executing him and the other convicted rapists will endanger future rape victims.

He also added that there is no danger to the new government in Jammu and Kashmir and it will complete its term. On questions raised on the Land Acquisition Ordinance of the union government, he said the Bill is in the interest of farmers. "We have to go to the farmers for votes.. How can we work to harm their interests", Ahir asked. Reiterating that there will be no shortage of gas and fertiliser for farmers,

he said a long term plan has been formulated to make the country self-reliant in this area. "On the lines of China, coal-based industrial units of gas and fertilisers will be set up in the country," he said. Ahir also said fertiliser industries in UP, West bengal, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh which closed down because of the wrong policies of the previous government, will be revived.

MHA recommends against repealing AFSPA

New Delhi, March 2 (PTi): The Home Ministry has recommended against repealing the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, dubbed by its critics as "draconian". In a report submitted to the Cabinet Committee of Security, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry said that the report of the Justice B P Jeevan Reddy committee, which recommended repeal of the law terming it as "a symbol of oppression" should be rejected. "We have recommended to the Union Cabinet to reject the report of Justice Jeevan Reddy committee," a Home Ministry official said. The Defence Ministry is also opposed to any dilution of the Act and has said that the forces operating in insurgencyprone areas are protected by the AFSPA from "harassment". The committee was set up in 2004, in the wake of intense agitation in Manipur following killing of a woman, Thangjam Manorama, while in the custody of Assam Rifles and the indefinite fast undertaken by activist Irom Sharmila. The committee, headed by Justice Jeevan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, submitted its report on June 6, 2005. The 147-page report recommends, "AFSPA should be repealed." The committee observed that "the Act has become a symbol of oppression, an object of hate and an instrument of discrimination and high handedness".

‘Attempts being made to remove Arvind Kejriwal as convener’ New Delhi, March 2 (aGeNcieS): In the midst of allegations, counter-allegations and leaked letters, the Aam Aadmi Party has decided to hold a meeting of its national executive on Wednesday to discuss the roles of senior leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan in the party. Addressing a press conference on Monday, party spokesperson Sanjay Singh said that a conspiracy to remove Arvind Kejriwal from the post of the national convener has been afoot since the last six to eight months. "The party will not be able to function smoothly when its senior members target Arvind ji and make efforts to defame the party," Singh told reporters. He also said in its national executive meeting on March 4 the party will discuss the recent turn of events, including the leakage of letters, as well as the

roles of Yadav and Bhushan in the party. "Constant leaks of letters written by party members has made the party look like a joke," the party spokesperson said. He also clarified that Kejriwal will remain the party's national convener. According to sources, AAP founding members Yadav and Bhushan will be asked to step down from their posts in the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) or assume non-active roles amid difference on various issues. They will not be asked to leave the party but if they choose to do so, they will not be stopped, sources said. With a series of letters leaked to the media - one by party lokpal Admiral L Ramdas, one by Yadav and Bhushan, one by Dilip Pandey and finally a rebuttal by Yadav – serious differences within the AAP, including Kejriwal's role

in the party, have tumbled out in the public. While Ramdas pointed to two camps emerging within the top leadership and asking the AAP to reconsider 'one-man, one-post' arrangement, others raised a number of problems including the treatment of volunteers, money management, donations, etc. Pandey's letter and Singh's statements, however, show that these issues are being interpreted as a conspiracy against Kejriwal. People close to Kejriwal such as Ashish Khetan have, meanwhile, been inducted in the Delhi government. Plans to expand to other states have also been put on hold by Kejriwal despite a keen interest shown by Yadav and several other party functionaries. Efforts were made by leaders to contain the differences with AAP lead-

er and former journalist Ashutosh tweeting that the developments were just a "clash of ideas" after the letter written by Bhushan became public. Earlier on Monday, Yadav slammed the "fabricated" and "bizarre" reports about the crisis in the party involving him and colleague Bhushan. "Voters in Delhi have given us a huge mandate and this is the time to work more with a large heart," Yadav wrote on Twitter. "The country has placed a lot of hope with us. And I can only appeal that we should not lower that expectation with our petty actions. I pray that better sense prevails on us," he added. After media reports stated that the party was looking at reconstituting the Parliamentary Affairs Committee (PAC) and keeping Yadav out of it, both party members ex-

pressed a desire to leave. Kejriwal did not dissuade them, sources said. Kejriwal did not attend the national executive meeting held on Thursday. According to party members, an argument between Yadav and other party members broke out. Another meeting was held on Friday which Yadav and Bhushan did not attend. It was in this meeting that the members asked Kejriwal to remain the national convener and reconstitute the PAC. Bhushan in his letter had accused the party of running a "one personcentric" campaign that revolved around Kejriwal during the Delhi assembly elections saying it was contrary to the AAP's principles. Bhushan said the campaign was making the party look like other conventional parties and called for more "swaraj" within the

organisation. "Running one personcentric campaign may be effective, but does that justify sacrificing our principles? We will need to make a conscious course correction if we have to get away from a supremo-controlled party," Bhushan said in a letter to members of the AAP's national executive, which met last Thursday. Bhushan also sought transparency in the way funds were spent which, he claimed, was being done in an "arbitrary" manner. "The party now receives considerable donations. There is, however, no systematic planning on how these funds are to be spend. We do not have any empowered committee or decision making system of deciding on how the funds are to be spent," he said. "We said that we would put out all our accounts on a public website... But far from bringing party under

RTI, we haven't even put our accounts on website, we've put donations but not expenses," he added. "Our party has been built on idealism and sweat and tears of thousands of volunteers who sacrificed much to create a different party… We owe it to them and must ensure that we don't drift and become just another one man centric party," the letter went on to add. Bhushan also accused Kejriwal of not giving more to the states to take their decision on contesting elections. Bhushan and Yadav wanted the party to contest the Haryana state elections, but another section led by Kejriwal was against it. "Swaraj means decentralised decision making. On those principles it is the state unit who have to decide whether we should contest elections in the state. But we are deciding for them and ordering them

not to contest elections. "Even the national executive had decided when to allow the states and when to contest elections but that decision was frustrated by Kejriwal by not allowing the states to contest elections. We made mockery of the principles of democracy and swaraj," Bhushan said. "With the result that such decisions are being made in an arbitrary manner by a few people who are not authorised by the national executive to take such decisions. There are some volunteers who are paid by the party, but a vast majority of them are not... Even these decisions need to be taken in a systematic and democratic manner," Bhushan said. In a public spat in June last year, Yadav had offered to quit but reconciliation was reached between him and Kejirwal.

Iraq launches operation to retake Tikrit

BAGHDAD, MArcH 2 (AP): Backed by allied Shiite, Sunni and Iranian fighters, Iraqi security forces launched a large-scale military operation Monday to recapture Saddam Hussein’s hometown from the Islamic State extremist group, a major step in a campaign to reclaim territory in northern Iraq controlled by the militants. But hours into the operation, a key test for the embattled Iraqi army, the military said it still hadn’t entered the city of Tikrit, indicating a long battle lies ahead. State-run Al-Iraqiya television said that forces were attacking Tikrit from different directions, backed by artillery and airstrikes by Iraqi fighter jets. It said the militants were dislodged from some areas outside the city. Several hours into the operation, it gave no additional details. The military commander of Salahuddin region, Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, told state TV the operation was “going on as planned,” with fighting taking place outside Tikrit mainly on its eastern side. “Until this moment we have not entered the city,” al-Saadi said. “God willing, we will enter, but we need some time as planned. ... God willing, victory will be achieved and Salahuddin will be turned into a grave for all terrorist groups.” Tikrit, the provincial capital of Salauhddin prov-

State militants and lies on the road connecting Baghdad to Mosul. Retaking it will help Iraqi forces have a major supply link for any future operation to retake Mosul. U.S. military officials have said a coordinated military mission to retake

Mosul will likely begin in April or May and involve up to 25,000 Iraqi troops. But the Americans have cautioned that if the Iraqis aren’t ready, the offensive could be delayed. The U.S.-led coalition launching airstrikes targeting the Islamic State group

Eastern Ukraine toll exceeds 6,000: UN GenevA, MArcH 2 (IAnS/ eFe): More than 6,000 people have been killed in the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine, the UN said on Monday, noting that the recent clashes near Donetsk airport and the city of Debaltseve have resulted in the deaths of hundreds. The two locations have witnessed the most recent and serious fighting between the Ukrainian government forces and the pro-Russian separatist militias, both before and shortly after the ceasefire went into effect two weeks ago. In its latest report on the human rights situation in Ukraine, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said that from midApril 2014 to February 28, 2015, a total of 5,809 deaths were documented, while 14,740 more people were wounded in clashes in the east of Ukraine. However, the OHCHR estimates that the total number of victims in the eastern Ukrainian conflict has “almost certainly” ex-

ceeded 6,000, including civilians and combatants, given that full casualty reports are still pending, including figures coming from the Donetsk airport and Debaltseve areas. “More than six thousand lives have now been lost in less than a year due to the fighting in eastern Ukraine. It is imperative that all sides comply with the provisions of the Minsk agreement and halt indiscriminate shelling and other hostilities that have created a dreadful situation for civilians,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said. The report compiled from data collected by observers deployed in Ukraine said that the number of casualties reported between early December and mid-February, when the ceasefire took effect, indicates that this was the most violent period of the conflict. During this period, it is reported that 1,012 people died and 3,800 others were injured. Al Hussein expressed his con-

cern about the recent attacks in Kharkov and Odessa, along with a general fear of more attacks on the city of Mariupol where 31 people died on January 24, alone. “Should this trend continue, it would represent a new and very deadly chapter in this conflict, expanding the areas where the rule of law and the protection of human rights are effectively absent,” Al Hussein said. “All aspects of people’s lives are being negatively affected, and the situation is increasingly untenable for the local inhabitants, especially in areas controlled by the armed groups. Many have been trapped in conflict zones, forced to shelter in basements, with hardly any drinking water, food, heating, electricity or basic medical supplies,” he explained. This is the ninth human rights report prepared by UN observers who work independently from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which is in charge of supervising the current ceasefire agreed upon in the Belarusian capital city of Minsk.

Officials said the vaccines were exposed to fluctuating temperatures, possibly because of faulty generators. “There may have been issue with the generators, but the facts will become clear after the inquiry,” said Dr Saqlain Ahmad Gilani, the national programme manager at the Expanded Programme on Immunization. He said 1.3 million doses of vaccine worth $3.7 million had been wasted. They had been donated by

GenevA, MArcH 2 (reuterS): U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry accused the U.N. Human Rights Council on Monday of being obsessed by allegations of Israeli abuses and said the United States would defend Israel against efforts to isolate it. In a speech to the Council in Geneva, Kerry also exhorted the 47-member-state group to look into what he described as severe abuses in separatist-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine as well as in Crimea, annexed by Russia from Ukraine last year. He also condemned North Korea’s human rights record as “appalling” and said tens of thousands of people there lived “as virtual slaves”. Kerry added, “There is no freedom of expression, worship or political dissent. “Kim Jong-un executes those who disagree with him, purging his country of anyone he knows, or imagines, to be disloyal. For decades the government has subjugated its citizens, starving and torturing and incarcerating them or worse.” Kerry offered a strong defence of Israel against what he called the council’s unbalanced focus on the country. “It must be said that the HRC’s obsession with Israel actually risks undermining the credibility of the entire organization,” Kerry said. “The United States will measure these things, I hope, fairly and dispassionately but we will oppose any effort by any group or participant in the U.N. system to arbitrarily and regularly de-legitimise or isolate Israel.”

the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). UNICEF says one in 10 Pakistani children does not survive their fifth birthday. The majority of deaths are due to easily treatable diseases. Doctors also say patients are regularly exposed to infected blood as authorities fail to monitor blood banks.

Seoul: North Korea test fires 2 short-range missiles SeouL, MArcH 2 (AP): North Korea on Monday fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea and warned of “merciless strikes” against its enemies as allies Seoul and Washington launched annual military drills Pyongyang claims are preparation for a northward invasion. North Korea regularly conducts such test firings of missiles, rockets and artillery, and they are often timed to express the country’s dissatisfaction with actions by Washington and Seoul. Monday was the start of military drills that will run until the end of April. Early Monday morning, two missiles launched from North Korea’s west coast flew about 500 kilometers (310miles) before landing in waters off the east coast, according to South Korea’s Defense Ministry.

Spokesman Kim Min-seok called the launches an “armed protest” against the South Korea-U.S. drills and a challenge to peace on the Korean Peninsula. The annual U.S.-South Korean military drills inevitably lead to angry North Korean rhetoric, although the allies say they are purely defensive. The North’s rhetoric is meant to show its people that a tough leadership is confronting what its propaganda portrays as outside hostility, but analysts also believe the drills infuriate because they cost Pyongyang precious resources by forcing the country to respond with its own drills and launches. “The only means to cope with the aggression and war by the U.S. imperialists and their followers is neither dialogue nor peace. village of al-Jalam south of Tikrit, killing seven troops and wounding 15, police and hospital officials said. Al-Jalam, a farming area that has been a stronghold of Sunni militants, is located outside the Sunni city of Samarra, 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists. Tikrit is an important test case for Iraq’s Shiiteled government, which is trying to reassert authority over the divided country. Islamic State fighters have a strong presence in the city and are expected to put up fierce resistance. The offensive comes as momentum has begun to shift since Iraqi soldiers, backed by airstrikes from a U.S.-led coalition, took back the nearby refinery town of Beiji in November. Any operation to take Mosul would require Iraq to seize Tikrit first because of its strategic location for military enforcements. Iraq is bitterly split between minority Sunnis, who were an important base of support for Saddam, and the Shiite majority. Since Saddam was toppled in a U.S.-led invasion in 2003, the Sunni minority has felt increasingly marginalized by the Shiite-led government in Baghdad, and in 2006 long-running tensions boiled over into sectarian violence that claimed tens of thousands

of lives. While the TV said Shiite and Sunni tribal fighters were cooperating in Monday’s offensive, Tikrit is an important Sunni stronghold, and the presence of Shiite forces risks could prompt a backlash among Sunnis. The Iraqi military is heavily dependent on Shiite militias that have been accused of abusing Sunni communities elsewhere in Iraq. Ahead of the operation, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, a Shiite, called on Sunni tribal fighters to abandon the Islamic State extremist group, offering what he described as “the last chance” and promising them a pardon. “I call upon those who have been misled or committed a mistake to lay down arms and join their people and security forces in order to liberate their cities,” al-Abadi said Sunday during a news conference in Samarra. His comments appeared to be targeting former members of Iraq’s outlawed Baath party, loyalists to Saddam, who joined the Islamic State group during its offensive, as well as other Sunnis who were dissatisfied with Baghdad’s Shiite-led government. Saddam, whose Sunnidominated government ruled the country for some two decades, was executed after his ouster. Tikrit frequently saw attacks on U.S. forces during the American occupation of the country.

‘Pakistan wastes $3.7 mn worth of donated vaccine’ ISLAMABAD, MArcH 2 (reuterS): Pakistan has wasted $3.7 million worth of vaccines donated to protect children from deadly diseases because officials failed to store them properly, a senior health official told Reuters on Monday. were not involved in the Tikrit operation, Iraqi officials said. American officials had no immediate comment. Past attempts to retake Tikrit have failed, however, as Iraq struggles with its armed forces, which collapsed in the wake of the

Islamic State group’s offensive last summer. Iraqi forces battling near Tikrit also apparently have the help of Iranian Gen. Ghasem Soleimani, the commander of the elite Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, who arrived there two days ago, the Iranian semi-official Fars news agency reported. The powerful general has emerged as the chief tactician in Iraq’s fight against the Sunni militants, working on the front lines alongside dozens of advisers from his country’s Revolutionary Guard to direct Shiite militiamen and government forces in the smallest details of some battles. Fars also reported drones were flying over Tikrit, without identifying whether the drones were Iranian or Iraqi. Hours after the offensive began, the U.N. special envoy in Iraq appealed to warring groups to avoid attacking civilians. “Military operations reinforced by international and Iraqi air support must be conducted with the utmost care to avoid civilian casualties, and with full respect for fundamental human rights principles and humanitarian law,” Nickolay Mladenov said in a statement. dealt with only by merciless strikes,” an unidentified spokesman for the North Korean military’s general staff said in a statement carried by state media. He said the U.S.-South Korean drills are aimed at conquering the North’s capital, Pyongyang, and removing its leadership. The rival Koreas earlier this year floated the possibility of holding what would be the third summit between their leaders since the countries were divided 70 years ago. But they have been at odds in recent weeks over terms, and prospects seem dim. North Korea separately told the U.S. that it was willing to impose a temporary moratorium on its nuclear tests if Washington cancels the joint military drills with South Korea. But the U.S. rejected the overture, calling it an “implicit threat.”

arrested a suspect Monday in the killing of an American writer who was a prominent critic of extremist Islam and was hacked to death last week as he walked with his wife in Dhaka, a government spokesman said. The arrest of Farabi Shafiur Rahman came four days after attackers wielding meat cleavers killed Avijit Roy, an outspoken atheist and critic of the intertwining of religion and politics, on a crowded sidewalk in the capital, said Mufti Mahmud Khan, a spokesman for the anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion. Roy, a Bangladesh-born engineer with American citizenship, was killed on a visit from Georgia in the United States to attend Dhaka’s main book fair. He and his wife, Rafida Ahmed, were attacked after leaving the fair. Ahmed was seriously injured. Rahman, a Muslim blogger

ings, Khan said, quoting him as writing: “Avijit Roy lives in America, so it’s not possible to kill him right now. But he will be killed when he comes back.” Rahman had been arrested previously for threatening an imam who performed funeral prayers for another atheist Bangladeshi blogger killed in 2013. He was released on bail after six months in jail. While Rahman acknowledged making the threats, Khan said, authorities refused to say if they believed he was one of the attackers. “He has admitted that he threatened Avijit but we are not sharing more information with you for the sake of the investigation. We need to ask him more,” Khan said. The Bangladesh government has accepted a U.S. offer of FBI help in the investigation of the killing, according to Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali.

Best employee we ever had: Jihadi John’s former boss

LonDon, MArcH 2 (IAnS): In fresh revelations about the journey from normality to infamy of the man known as “Jihadi John”, it has come to light that Mohammed Emwazi, the Briton identified as an Islamic State (IS) executioner, was once a star salesman for a Kuwaiti IT company. Emwazi, the Kuwaitiborn but London-raised graduate who features in IS videos apparently beheading hostages in the Syrian desert, was quiet and rather withdrawn but had a natural gift for his work, a former boss in Kuwait City told the Guardian. “He was the best employee we ever had,” the former boss said of the then 21-year-old. “He was very good with people, calm and decent, he came to our door and gave us his CV.” He said the staff were surprised that a Londoner would want to come and work in Kuwait, as many of his peers in the region would be looking to make the journey in the opposite direction. The former boss added that, after a stellar probation period, the Briton

disappeared completely in April 2010 after a trip to London. “How could someone as calm and quiet as him become like the man who we saw on the news? It’s just not logical that he could be this guy.” During his brief stint at the IT company, he twice requested emergency family leave to return to Britain. In simple English handwriting, he wrote ‘London’ as a destination for a seven-day stint on January 10, 2010. His second request was

made days before he left for good on April 25 that year. “We never saw him again,” said his employer. “But he did send us back his SIM card in the post.” Soon after his return to London, counter-terrorism officials detained him and prevented him from returning to Kuwait. Asked to reflect on how the young sales representative who persuaded people to buy their IT products became one of the world’s most wanted men, the employer said: “I have no answers for this. He wasn’t

sociable. He was always earnest. He didn’t smile. But he wasn’t bad. “We have Indian Christians working at this company who have been here for 17 years,” he said. “They are treated the same as everyone. You must deal with people well. You must not use force. Maybe he fell into the wrong hands when he went back.” Asked to send a message to his former protege, the employer said: “I would say to him one thing: ‘Fear God, because Islam prohibits what you do’.”

he Surviving Interim-Body Members are constrained to voice their serious concern regarding the socio-political and economic condition of Nagaland in these days. We seem to be spiraling out of control and headed for a much degenerated Nagaland. The Nagaland we envisioned under the 16 Point Agreement and Article 371 A(1)(a), which is an unprecedented written provisions granted by the Constitution of India, has hardly materialized although the Government of India has provided optimum aid to develop our State and people. but in retrospection we really must admit that we all are to blame for the deplorable condition of our ‘Nagaland for Christ’. Naga people failed to produce leaders with vision and charisma. Leaders who can lead with example and be an epitome for Naga patriotism is the need of the hour. The people must wake up and face reality, and desist from auctioning their universal-franchise to Political candidates who are unscrupulous enough to woo them with cash and kind. People must elect candidates who pos-

sess genuine love and concern for their home and country. The worship of Money must be replaced with genuine devotion to Lord Jesus Christ and the practice of embezzling public funds must be stopped with the fear of God Almighty. We believe that redemption for corrupted Nagaland is possible if we turn to our God and have the vision for a prosperous , honest ,hardworking and Godly Naga society. We must be able to forgive and reconcile in the name of Jesus Christ for a better Nagaland. ‘Corruption’ in Governance and public life simply means stealing from public funds meant for development as well as extortion in any form. Anyone indulging in such must realize it’s a shameful act of being a thief and an extortioner! As a declared Christian State how can we bear to go on reading in our daily Newspapers only reports of evil and wickedness which is caused by corruption at all levels in our society? Burning of effigies, bombing homes and public places, extortions ,kidnapping for ransom, cold blooded murders, illegal taxations and all oth-

er immoral acts are very strange and cowardly with regard to Naga way of life. Our forefathers lived simple, honest lives and settled differences face to face in a straight-forward manner. Any decision made was verbal and unwritten yet it is final and honoured forever. Offering of prayers only at functions, inaugurations, dedications etc. is not enough. We appeal to all Naga Christians, especially those in decision making positions to exercise Godliness and make Nagaland and its people to be a blessing for others. Remember that we all must give account sooner or later before the judgement seat of Christ. This is “Nagaland for Christ” and don’t think that God is going to be a silent spectator! May God forgive and bless us. May the name of Jesus Christ be extolled once more in Nagaland and her people! “ Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.” Isaiah 51.7 Surviving-Interim Body Members T.Kikon,Tokheho Sema & Lothi Rengma

Mourinho feeling 'like a kid'

Chelsea's head coach Jose Mourinho lies on the ground as he celebrates his team winning the English League Cup final soccer match between Chelsea and Tottenham, at Wembley stadium in London, Sunday, March 1. (AP Photo)

London, March 2 (aFP): Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said he felt "like a kid" after claiming the first trophy of his second Stamford Bridge tenure with a League Cup final victory over Tottenham Hotspur. A deflected John Terry strike and a Kyle Walker own goal gave Chelsea a 2-0 win at a rain-soaked Wembley on Sunday and earned Mourinho his third success in the competition after two triumphs during his first spell as the west London club's manager. It ended a 914-day wait for silverware for the 52-year-old Portuguese -- the longest of his managerial career -- and he expressed hope that it was a sign of things to come for his nascent Chelsea team. "Before the game I had the same feelings as my first final, I don't know how many years ago. It's impor-

tant for me to feel the same happiness after the victory. It's important for me to feel that I am a kid at 52 years old,” said Mourinho, whose previous trophy had been the 2012 Spanish Super Cup he won with Real Madrid. "I need to feed myself with titles. It's important for me, it's important for the boys. For the club it's one more cup. "But it's the first one of the new team. You have Petr Cech, John Terry, (Didier) Drogba, and after that everybody belongs to a new generation of players. So as a team, very, very important." One of Chelsea's new generation to feature prominently at Wembley was 20-year-old French centre-back Kurt Zouma, pressed into action as an auxiliary holding midfielder in the absence of the suspended Nemanja Matic. "It's very difficult for a central defender to play there,"

Mourinho said. "In that position, you're surrounded by players. You have to think quick, you have to decide quick. It's very, very difficult, but our new Marcel Desailly, he worked hard during the week and did a fantastic job for us." Mourinho's first League Cup success, in 2005, proved the precursor to back-to-back league titles, but although Manchester City's 2-1 loss at Liverpool earlier on Sunday left Chelsea five points clear in the Premier League with a game in hand, he said there was still a long way to go. "We have lots of difficult matches to play," he said. "Twelve matches to play, still difficult." Spurs had stunned Chelsea 5-3 when the sides last met at White Hart Lane on New Year's Day and they started positively, with Christian Eriksen hitting the bar from a free-kick and

Harry Kane testing Cech with a low shot. But Terry's goal arrived with cruel timing just before half-time and after Walker had inadvertently deflected a shot from Diego Costa into his own net in the 56th minute, Tottenham's fight faded. However, Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino said he was proud of his team's display and with 21-year-olds Kane and Eric Dier and 20-year-old Nabil Bentaleb among those getting their first taste of a major final, he urged his players to build on the experience. "We respected our style, our philosophy," said the Argentine. "I think we are a very young squad. Today, 23 and a half years the average (age) on the pitch and for many players, the first final.” "It's sure that we will play a lot of finals in the next few years."

Modern day apartheid in the republic of India

T

he Times TV News channel under the dynamic anchor Arnab Gosawmi for the past few days has been intensively campaigning and creating awareness amongst the people of India on the growing VIP/VVIP culture being practiced in places where all citizens have “equal rights and privileges”. The commoners who in other words the citizens of India are restrained, prohibited and heckled by these so-called “superspecies” because of the special tag “Very Important Person”/”Very Very Important Person” (“VIP/VVIP”) being exclusively enjoyed by select brands and classes of people. We are proud of our nation and call ourselves as Indians. Our Constitution guarantees equal rights and privileges on par with others. Indian Constitution also reinforces equality and dignity to all. Further, it categorically states that there shall be no discrimination and distinction shown and practiced within and between individuals, groups and communities. Despite the constitutional guarantees even after 67 years of Independence along with other isms we have somehow failed to take notice and ended with yet another form called as “VIP/VVIP”. It is modern day apartheid. We may have overlooked or undermined or even ignored the VIP/VVIP culture. Since we failed to address this VIP/VVIP culture it has now become a phenomenon. Those who call and claim themselves as VIP/ VVIP have taken undue advantage and taken the majority of Indians for big rides. In recent times, it has assumed alarming proportions, therefore could be termed as modern day apartheid in Independent India. Having abolished the privy purses and colonial rule, we are continuing with a baggage called as VIP/VVIP. The union ministers, state chief ministers, ministers, judges, governors, MLAs and others who hold important portfolios in the names of “security” and “protocol” use VIP/VVIP tags by violating basic etiquette and civility. For each and every one government (s) allots convoy and Z--security and commandos. In Chandigarh there are two roads leading to railway station with big board: 1) For VIP/VVIP & 2) For Ordinary Citizens. In most of the railway stations and even in the airports there are VIP/ VVIP lounges. They are wellequipped with all facilities. These are the restricted areas for nonVIPs/VVIPs. VIP/VVIP culture has crept into the mind set of our politicians, ministers and others in high places. In Chandigarh, the Badal families enjoy the privileges and abuse them to the maximum. Similarly, take Chandra Babu Naidu, the chief minister of Andhra 1 Professor of Social Ethics, teaching at ACTS Academy of Higher Education and Clarke Theological College, Mokokchung, Nagaland.2 and KCR, the chief minister of Telangana, have maximized their privileges because of the VVIP tag. During peak hours from Banjara Hills to the Secretariat or wherever Chandra Babu Naidu and KCR travel the roads are blocked for hours. Four times a day the main roads on which he travels are blocked and the commoners

have no other go except wasting four hours a day at an average. Karan Singh also enjoys this privilege and when asked “It is a privilege given to him”. Needless to say Ministers such as Ram Vilas Pasvan goes straight to the tarmac and others also enjoy this arrangement. Praful Patel’s family was given a separate Air India plane when he was the aviation minister. Shamelessly they give all sorts of reasons such as health grounds, business, so on and so forth. Even it seems that the CM of Bihar, Nitish Kumar had applied whose application was rejected. When interviewed by the reporters those who enjoy and think that they are superspecies say that “they are given these privileges, why not enjoy”. They think that they are given, but in real terms these privileges have been taken and almost grabbed. Along with these VVIPs their entourage, security and gun-trotting musclemen, sycophants and other chumchas too enjoy these privileges. First and the foremost, who are they? How did they get into these positions? If you go back to their past most of them hail from humble background and have come up to this position by working hard. Once they get elected and given ministerial berths they think that they are superhumans. In reality, these privileges though given to a few but many have grabbed it. In this the bureaucrats are to be included and enjoy the most. They use the privileges to the maximum because the politicians are at their mercy. So, the bureaucrats in fact take full advantage. They should be taken to task too. Harish Salve, one of the renowned advocates of the Supreme Court of India, who is an active member of this campaign, informed that there is exclusively a road for VIP/VVIP that goes far beyond our imagination. It shows that a disease that has crept in and thus moved from feudal principality to republic. It shows clearly the vestiges of feudalism. Even though there has been a shift from hereditary maharaja rule to inheritance rights. Take Kolkatta or Chennai or even Pondicherry they have special roads and parking lots for MLAs, Ministers and so on. In Chennai airport these VIPs and VVIPs could park their vehicles anywhere and there is no time limit. Even the present BJP President of Tamil Nadu before she became the President enjoyed the VIP privilege. It is alarming to note that only VVIP cars are allowed into the arrival corridor at Chennai Airport. Further, the VIPs and VVIPs need not pay the tolls. It is ludicrous that why are they exempted and for what? They receive their salaries and enjoy the road, but need not pay, while the tax payers are expected to pay. Simply there is no rationale and logic. Times TV Channel keep covering many such incidences where VIPs and VVIPs have usurped these privileges and enjoy shamelessly for which they don’t deserve. When 3 asked, invariably they say that “it is their “entitlement”. Who gave them the VIP/VVIP entitlements? For what and why are they entitled? The VIP/VVIP culture shall not be tolerated. People irrespective of the age go through all difficulties day in and

day out, but these shameless VVIPs and VIPs have never been pushed over. The Supreme Court in its landmark judgment ruled out the use beacon (red light). It also symbolizes VIP/ VVIP culture. But some retorted back and said “if red light is prohibited, we would then use blue or green or any color other than red”. In Jaipur six-lane highway is dominated by the VVIPs. Delhi-Chandigarh highway, the VVIPs can just pass though a separate lane and they need not pay the toll charges. Even in the railway stations they are exempted from paying parking fee. Separate roads, separate treatment and separate counters. Why and for what? They are enjoying numerous privileges that include separate lounges and toilets. It is in this context, line of separation need to look at and probed in. It is bewildering that VIPs and VVIPs have private security and when they go for morning walks the security given to them become their cover. Some thousands of security personnel are employed at the cost of the government exchequer. While on the other commoners have one police for every 700 people. Common people suffer in the railway stations, airports and bus stations. Their behavior clearly manifests feudal and corrupt mind-set. It is just a tip of the iceberg. If the VIP/VVIP culture is not curbed and annihilated commoners would revolt like that French Revolution. We are a Republic and each one ought to enjoy the same privileges. The so-called VIPs and VVIPs think that they are somewhat special species. Take for instance their background. The moment they become MLAs, MPs and Ministers they think endless of themselves. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. They do not know how to moderate power. The ways they behave and appropriate the privileges are appalling. It is strange when we see top people like UK’s PM David Cameron travels by tube train and Boris Johnson one of the most wanted politicians and the Mayor of London usually travels by bi-cycle when invited to speak. Every day we hear and see number of cases. These top wigs continue to behave the same and do not want to change. Who made them VVIP? It is not public and they made themselves as VVIP. Are they seriously embarrassed? We need to end the culture of entitlement. BJP promised Aam Aadmi that the good days are ahead. Even after nine months Aaam Aadmi continues to suffer. In addition, look at the huge bungalows these collectors and bureaucrats enjoy. In small towns and districts these collectors and their deputies act like mini-maharajas. British Raj is gone and yet continues in other forms. Politicians who enjoy VIP/VVIP should understand that a day would come and certainly these VVIPs would go out and eventually become ordinary citizens. By then it would be too late and heavy for them to realize. The whole system remains colored. The mindset of these VIPs and VVIPs are corroded. Let the politicians, 4 bureaucrats and ministers whether state or centre know that they are there to serve the people. They should not think that their job is to lord over, but to serve

the people. This is why there are called public servants. The politicians are elected by the people to serve them and not to entitle them with privileges by having VIP/VVIP tags. Let us remind them that they are there as long as people want them. Once they get rejected the society would consider them as liabilities. Along with others, the Indian Church should also be included. Indian Church has always been feudal. The feudal zamindars are well represented by their attires. When they come for important ecclesial-related programs and ceremonies, the use of scepter and different vestments and other paraphernalia depict the feudal age and feudal mindset of the Indian Church. When they go out for functions the moment they step out of their cars people should carry their suitcases and show respect by kissing their rings and bowing before them. Use of terms such as Your Grace, Most Reverend and other titles show the colonial and pre-reformation age. Nowadays they also fitted big plates above the car numbers indicating bishop of such a place like that of government vehicles fitted with fancy lightbeams and so on. The big cross they wear is to show that they are somebody important and supreme leaders, but in essence the cross means sacrifice and struggles. The ecclesiastical episcopacy is no different than others. The VIP/VVIP culture has permeated into the Indian church especially amongst these heads. They thus equate them to ministers. They are elected to do the ministry following the foot-steps of Jesus and bear the cross of the adherents, and certainly not to lord over. The arrogance and abuse of power have crept into the top echelons of the Indian Church. They are ordinary people called out to serve the people nurturing and inculcating spiritual and ethical values to the believers. The cars they use and the wealth amassed totally contradict the ministry they are in. The moderators, bishops and priests except a few show their arrogance and insensitivity when they attend wedding receptions and other public functions. They are taken to exclusive halls and served dinner and looked after well. Mingling with the adherents and the public means lowering their VIP/VVIP status. Without any common sense most of them cut the queues to wish the couple. It shows sheer arrogance and if questioned or dared aam admis should face the wrath of them both muscle and money power. The VIP/VVIP culture is deeply soaked, entrenched and crept into India’s political and religious establishments. It is astonishing the ways these VIPs/VVIPs behave in the airports and other public places. They do not have iota of decency; the moment they land/arrive they expect everyone to give them respect and pave way so that they become special viz VIPs/VVIPs. Their psyche is filled with demanding and commanding respect and privileges from the public. They fail to understand that because of the public and the adherents they enjoy the VIP/VVIP status; without them they are nothing. Take for 5 instance, the behavior of the Indian politicians and the reli-

gious heads while on flight and at the airports. We come across many horrifying episodes. Some years ago, one of the top-ranked ministers in UPA government tried to cut the queue at Amsterdam airport. An ordinary security personnel stopped him and told that “This is not India; follow the queue”. People across the globe find this type of behavior strange and thus look at us as if something wrong with us and think that we are freaks. The behaviors of these super-species bring disgrace and shame to the Republic India. The battle has just begun. The Times TV channel is pioneering the movement. It is the defining moment for all us and the public of the Indian Republic. A crusade has just begun against the VIP/VVIP culture and feudal mind-sets. Hundreds and thousands of Aam Aadmis are joining this movement. It is like another freedom struggle so that dignity and equality shall be restored to each and every citizen of this great Republic. The silent spectators and victims of these arrogant and insensitive VVIPs/VIPs are coming out openly with their pent up emotions and feeling. In unison the slogans are: “Enough is Enough of Your Medieval and Feudal Culture”; “If You Don’t Stop & Change, We Shall Force You to Change and Remove VIP/VVIP Tags”. For the last 67 years the VIP/VVIP culture has been part of the DNA of our political and religious leaders. They would not easily give it up and try their level best to resist because they are thick skinned and shameless. So we need to name them and shame them. VIP/VVIP culture is in their DNA. All those who claim themselves as VIPs/VVIPs are not VIPs/VVIPs by birth, they become VIPs/VVIPs by the positions they hold. It is the mind-set problem. Robert Vadra and Rahul Gandhi are the serial offenders for having abused this VVIP tag. Because of the protocol many lives are lost. Ambulances are stopped for hours because of these insensitive super-species who are accompanied with long entourage and convoy. BJP did not initiate a single thing to stop this VVIP-super class; rather many want to enjoy this privilege. BJP cannot snatch the privileges and do not want antagonize its political class as well as others too. VVIP/VIP craze leads to genetic mutation because they behave differently. Let us struggle to get rid of VIP/VVIP culture from our society. It is also the movement of equality because all are equal. The words VIP/VVIP are to be made redundant. In order to get rid of these words from our parlance more stories and incidences should come out. The media such as The Times and others have taken up this struggle at different levels. PM Modi keep chanting Achche Din and Achche Din, but when? So, we the AAM ADDMIs have the resolve and resilience to bring about this change because this movement is about bringing about and thus establishing: “ONE HUMAN RACE AND NOT TWO’ because “WE ARE All THE PEOPLE OF THIS REPUBLIC, EQUAL AND WE ARE THE DEMOCRACY AAM AADMI”. On this there shall be no compromise and no dilution in LETTER AND SPIRIT. Dr. John Mohan Razu CTC, Mokokchung

Vogue Editor Anna Wintour reveals the secrets of her success

Be decisive, get sacked and PRETEND to know what you're doing

S

he's one of the most famous and successful magazine editors in the world, legendary for her frosty manner, trademark bob and wearing sunglasses at all times - even during the Oscars ceremony. But what makes American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, 65, so successful? In an interview with Alistair Campbell for his new book Winners And How They Succeed, she shared the secrets of her success. In a book extract in the Sunday Times' Style magazine, Wintour, who became American Vogue's editor in chief in 1988, reveals that being decisive, delegating and recovering fast from setbacks have taken her to the top - and kept her there. Having been fired from her role as a junior fashion editor at Harper's

Bazaar after just nine months in 1975, she said: 'Everyone should be sacked at least once in their career because 'perfection doesn't exist'. She added: 'It's important to have setbacks, because that is the reality of life.' The most powerful woman in fashion and editor of Vogue for almost 30 years is rumoured to have been the model for Miranda Priestly, the terrifying magazine editor who hires Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada. But her analysis of her own strengths is far more human and surprisingly humble than the film character as she asks whether 'journalist' is even the right word to describe what she does. Yet her most surprising trick is pretending to be sure of herself, even if she doesn't feel it. She said: 'It makes it clearer for everyone else.

Most people prevaricate. I decide fast.' With the nickname 'Nuclear Wintour' owing to her frosty demeanour Wintour, was made artistic director of Conde Nast by her employer in 2013 and editorial director in July 2014. She attributes being organised and a good delegator to her success, and says there's no need to double and triple check what her staff are doing. 'People work better when they have responsibility,' she said. She also revealed that she has no idea how to make a dress, couldn't create an image from a photo shoot and can't write, and instead responds to other people's talents. Her other tips for getting to the top include getting up early - she rises at 5am everyday - and 'turning off' at the weekend.

Popularity comes with work, not via social media: Boman IranI H

Seven new dinosaurs of 'Jurassic World' introduced

e has 'followers' galore--over 2,300,000 on Twitter and almost 42,000 on Facebook. But Bollywood's endearing actor Boman Irani says that while social media presence is vital, it's not a "yardstick" for an artiste's popularity. "I genuinely believe that popularity comes as a result of one's work. I have never felt the need to be active on social media to stay popular. If it was so, I would be far more regular and regimental in the way I post (online)," the 55-year-old told IANS over phone from Mumbai. In a chat as freewheeling as he considers his "social

media interactions" to be, the versatile actor opened up about his networking skills -- a skill, one must admit, has become an indispensable part of all actors' life. "I don't write about my every step and move. It's not a compulsion to stay connected, but I don't consider it a duty. I tweet when I wish and when I feel like," said the actor, who uses the medium not just to share updates on his projects, but also "slice-of-life" moments from his everyday life, apart from sharing glimpses of his photography skills. One thing he steers clear from is sarcasm.

"Sarcasm doesn't work for me. People don't read between the lines," said Boman, whose comic timing in movies like "Main Hoon Na", "Lage Raho Munna Bhai", "Khosla Ka Ghosla" and "3 Idiots", as well as at live events, has been appreciated by Hindi film audiences over the years. Nevertheless, Boman says people must not cringe from sharing strong opinions on such platforms as long as it's made "well and in a prudent" manner. Has he ever faced brickbats on social media? "People have generally been nice to me, they haven't been tough on

niversal Pictures has introduced more dinosaurs from its upcoming film "Jurassic World". The "Jurassic World" viral site has been updated to include pictures of seven more creatures that visitors can meet when they visit the park, including Suchomimus, Baryonyx, Dimorphodon, Pteranodon, Edmontosaurus, Metriacanthosaurus and a pack of Microceratus. These beasts join previously-revealed species like Ankylosaurus, Gallimimus, Mosasaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus Rex and of course Indominus Rex. Images and details for Pachycephalosaurus, Parasaurolophus and the Velociraptors have yet to be unveiled. In related news, a video has been uploaded to the Jurassic World site, giving fans glimpses at how baby dinosaurs are made. The clip sees a number of scientists at the Hammond Creation Lab working hard to "extract, sequence and assemble the DNA necessary to bring dinosaurs back from extinction to Jurassic World." "Jurassic World" is opening in U.S. theaters on June 12. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the film that's set 22 years after the events of the original "Jurassic Park" stars Ty Simpkins, Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson and Chris Pratt among others.

ne Direction star Zayn Malik has embarked on a solo project with British songwriter/producer Naughty Boy. Malik has been working with the La La La hitmaker on an upcoming track after previously working together on One Direction track One Chance To Dance. The song failed to make the cut for the boyband's 2014 album Four, but now the Dj is planning to release that song and his new collaboration with Malik as part of his upcoming project. However, Naughty Boy is confident Malik's solo endeavor will not spell the end of One Direction. He tells Britain's Sun on Sunday newspaper, "We're making music and having fun. This is just like a side gig and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. "It's a good time for Zayn to showcase what he really can do. I don't think that is being fully exploited within the band because there are five people and it needs to be balanced out. They all have something to show the world as individuals. They can always come back together and do their thing. I don't think they will ever split up..."

poiler alert: the archetypal Italian mamma, part Sophia Loren, part fecund Mother Theresa is, in reality, quite thin on the ground. Italy has the lowest birthrate in Europe. The eventual extinction of the Italian race is a matter of considerable hand wringing here. Dolce & Gabbana to the rescue. If the clothes in this tribute to mothers don't lead to a population spike in nine months, there is no hope for Italian manhood. These clothes make women look the way God surely intended. This was classic Dolce & Gabbana territory, for which read an update on their beloved 1950s and 1960s tailoring. He will be joined by Geeta Kapur and Terence Lewis on the show. "I had become so choosy that there was nothing left to choose from," he laughs, when asked what took him so long to return to TV. "Now that I have decided to come back, I am taking up whatever promising is coming my way, be it films or TV. I want to be how I was in the beginning of my career and work hard," he adds. Why did he choose this show to be his comeback vehicle? "No specific reason, I just wanted to start working. Mothers represent strength and I am sure they are going to rock on the show," he sums up.

Colin Firth fronts campaign to help children with stammers

ritish actor Colin Firth is fronting an appeal to raise $2.4 million (ÂŁ1.5 million) to help children with stammers. The star won an Oscar for his portrayal of King George Vi, who struggled with a serious stutter, in The King's Speech, and now he is throwing his support behind Britain's Action For Stammering Children campaign, which aims to ensure every child with a stammer gets the professional help they need to overcome the speech disorder. In a statement, Firth says, "The King's Speech taught me not only the cruelty of having a stammer but also the lifechanging benefits specialist therapy can bring... "I hope everyone will get behind this appeal, which will make a genuine difference to children up and down the country, all of whom deserve to speak freely and live their life (sic) to the full."

uperhero Batman's enemy andromantic interest Catwoman, Selina Kyle, has come out bisexual in the latest issue of 'Catwoman' comic book. Selina is the head of Gotham's Calabrese crime family, and, on the brink of a mob war, shares a kiss with the woman currently in the Catwoman costume, Eiko Hasigaway, in a moment that have major ramifications for both characters as the storyline progresses, reported the Verge. In her blog, series writer Genevieve Valentine wrote that, for her, "this wasn't a revelation so much as a confirmation." Selina Kyle's relationships outside of the one she shares with Bruce Wayne have been viewed with ambiguity for years, and adding this angle to her character was "indispensable". The moment between Selina and Eiko in Catwoman is not meant to titillate, though, but lends the characters depth, especially with war right on the horizon in issue.

lONDON, MARch 2 (REUtERS): Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Villarreal on Sunday to leave them just two points ahead of Barcelona in the La Liga standings. Bayern Munich crushed Cologne 4-1 to stay eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and French champions Paris St Germain missed the chance to go top of Ligue 1 when they were held to a 0-0 draw by AS Monaco. SPAIN Real Madrid had their lead over second-placed Barcelona cut to two points when they failed to win at home for only the second time this season as Villarreal fought back from a goal down in an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu on Sunday. Cristiano Ronaldo gave Madrid the lead in the 52nd minute with a penalty he earned and converted. But Madrid squandered Ronaldo's league-leading 30th goal of the season when it conceded a goal to Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno. Champions Atletico Madrid also stumbled, a 0-0 stalemate at Sevilla denting their chances of a second consecutive Spanish title and leaving them five points behind Barca in third. Uruguay forward Luis Suarez had a hand in all three Barca goals in a scrappy 3-1 win at struggling Granada on Saturday, netting in between strikes from Ivan Rakitic and Lionel Messi. FRANCE Champions Paris St Germain failed to move top of Ligue 1 after being held to a 0-0 draw by AS Monaco on Sunday. PSG

remained one point behind Olympique Lyonnais, who suffered their first league defeat in three months against Lille on Saturday. Olympique Marseille are in third place, four points behind the leaders after losing 3-2 at home to Caen. GERMANY Leaders Bayern Munich continued their unstoppable march towards the Bundesliga title with a 4-1 demolition of Cologne to stay eight points clear at the top, with Bundesliga top scorer Arjen Robben scoring one and setting up two more goals. VfL Wolfsburg stayed second after charging back from a goal down three times against in-form Werder Bremen to win 5-3 with Bast Dost and Daniel Caligiuri scoring twice each. Last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund can hope for European football next season after climbing up to 10th with a 3-0 victory over Ruhr valley rivals Schalke 04. ITALY Napoli's grip on third place, the Champions League playoff spot, weakened after they lost 1-0 at Torino while Lazio and Fiorentina behind them both won. Kamil Glik's goal gave Torino an impressive win and left Napoli with 45 points from 25 games, two ahead of Lazio with Fiorentina a further point behind in fifth. Mohamed Salah's third goal in four league games since his move from Chelsea gave Fiorentina a 1-0 win at Roberto Mancini's Inter Milan.

NEw DElhI, MARch 2 (AFP): Jagmohan Dalmiya, who turned India into cricket's financial powerhouse before being unceremoniously dumped by his peers, returned as board president Monday in place of the sport's scandal-hit global supremo. Dalmiya was elected unopposed as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as part of a deal which observers say will allow the embattled incumbent Narayanaswami Srinivasan to stay on as head of the International Cricket Council. The election caps a remarkable comeback for Dalmiya, who helped bring about a massive expansion in the BCCI's financial muscle in the 1980s and 90s by negotiating mega television deals before being ousted a decade ago over allegations of misappropriation of funds. Srinivasan had been forced to stand aside after the Supreme Court found him guilty of a conflict of interest over his ownership of a team in the Indian

Premier League, the BCCI's money-spinning Twenty20 tournament. However observers say that Srinivasan, who cut his teeth under Dalmiya, will remain a powerful figure behind the scenes in the BCCI and the board will use its influence to ensure he can extend his tenure as president of the ICC, the game's Dubai-based world governing body.

The 74-year-old Dalmiya, who hails from the eastern city of Kolkata, is credited with helping to turn the game into a lucrative global sport. He went on to become ICC president from 19972000 and BCCI president from 2001 to 2004, a period which also saw him secure another World Cup for the sub-continent. While Dalmiya effectively

handpicked his successor, Ranbir Singh Mahendra, he was marginalised the following year when Pawar beat Mahendra to become the president after a bitterly-contested election. Later, Pawar got Dalmiya expelled from the BCCI for alleged misappropriation of funds and for his refusal to provide documents pertaining to hosting the 1987 World Cup. Dalmiya challenged the decision and in 2007 both the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court cleared him of any irregularities. He returned as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal in 2007 and was back in the BCCI fold. Cricket's status as the dominant sport among India's 1.2-billion strong population has led to regular power struggles within the BCCI. International news organisations, including Agence France-Presse, have suspended their on-field coverage of matches hosted by the BCCI after the board imposed restrictions on picture agencies.

Nadal wins first title of year in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, MARch 2 (REUtERS): Rafael Nadal won his first title of the year with a 6-4 6-1 victory over Juan Monaco in a rain-interrupted Argentine Open final on Sunday. Nadal, showing marked progress in his comeback from injury and other woes last year, notched his 65th career title and equalled Guillermo Vilas’s 46 on clay with the Argentine great watching from the stands.

“I had the hope of winning here and I prepared very well for this so it’s objective achieved,” the Spaniard, upset in the Rio Open semi-finals a week ago, told a courtside interviewer. The world number four, ninetimes French Open champion, got the first break in the seventh game after a finely weighted chip that landed well out of Monaco’s reach put him 30-15 up and took it when the Argentine netted a service return.

Nadal wrapped up the rain-interrupted set in 45 minutes. It had stood at 1-1 after 14 minutes when the players had to come off court for nearly an hour before play could resume. He was too good for the 2007 tournament winner and former world number 10, who is also looking to regain his best form after a lean spell, breaking serve three more times for a comfortable victory in one hour and 26 minutes.
