Protest over RTA directive continues Morung Express News Dimapur | May 13
C M Y K
The protest by autorickshaw drivers over the recent directive from the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Dimapur continued on May 13. Even as the Dimapur District Auto Drivers’ Union (DDADU) was reported to have met the RTA and district administration to further deliberate on the matter on May 12, autorickshaw drivers protested at the DimapurChumukedima route parking lot today. Many passengers were stranded for hours during the day as the police faced stiff opposition from drivers. Unhappy over the RTA directive that would reduce per day earnings, the drivers refused to ferry passengers on the Dimapur-Chumukedima route. The drivers began to take the route only as evening approached when police checks enforcing the directive lessened. The lack of city passenger bus service became clearly evident as passengers, who have been relying on the ‘shared-auto’ system for years, had to either wait or turn back. A nonexistent city bus service means the public have to either use ‘sharedauto’ or personally hire one, which normally costs between Rs. 200500 on the route or simply on how well the fare is pre-negotiated. The enforcement of the RTA directive banning the seating of passengers on either side of the driver entails a loss of at least Rs. 60 per trip for the driver, which translates to a few hundred rupees per day. Rs. 30 is the shared per passenger charge on the DimapurChumukedima route. The protesting drivers contend that if the RTA directive is to be enforced it has to follow suit with revision of fare (per passenger). While neither the DDADA nor the district administration could be reached for comment, the RTA is reported to have askedDDADUtosubmita memorandumproposing fare revision at the meeting held on May 12.

‘only one teacher’ running college Smoked meat - most common of cancer in North East departments in eastern nagaland cause Head & Neck Cancer – An Indian cancer
TuENsaNg, may 13 (mExN): The Chemistry and Political Science Department of Sao Chang College, Tuensang is managed by “only one teacher” respectively while computer department does not have a single faculty, a students’ union representing Eastern Nagaland highlighted today. The other government colleges in the region Wangkhao, Yingli and Zisaji – are facing the same problem, the Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) stated in a press note issued by its Chairman Longre Chang and Joint Secretary Angth. The Union said that it is painful to see the students suffering during examination due to non-completion of the syllabus. While these colleges have to run with a single teacher or even without a teacher in some departments, excess teachers are manning the same in other districts, it maintained. In this regard, reminding thegovernmenttoaddressits demands at the earliest, the Union stated that, “It will not allow any colleges within its jurisdiction to function without sufficient teachers from

next semester.” The Union, however, had agreed to give few more days as “verbally requested by the Additional Director” during a meeting with ENCSU officials in the first week of May, it added. It further acknowledged “prompt action” taken by the concerned authority in posting Principals at Wangkhao College, Mon and Yingli College, Longleng, but expressed regret that they remain mostly absent from duties. For instance, without a Principal for more than 2 years, ENCSU informed that the recent designated Principal in Yingli College was transferred from Sao Chang College who was “found absent from his bounded duty during our (ENCSU) visit to Sao Chang College reportedly due to poor health.” The ENCSU, therefore, cannot accept the posting of designated Principal at
Yingli College, the Union said urging the Government to make an alternative arrangement at the earliest and post someone who can be “physically and practically present in the college.” The Union also reaffirmed its demand that the department should take disciplinary action “against the irregular teaching staffs” and the action taken report should be conveyed to ENCSU for “further necessary action in the interest of all concern.” “If the Department fail to take action against the erring staffs then the ENCSU is prepared to take our own course of action. The department should also cancel all the teachers out at attachment immediately,” it added. Meanwhile, the ENCSU also reiterated that the New Building of Zisaji Presidency College, Kiphire should
be electrified and provided with all the basic necessities before shifting to the new site. Also acknowledging the provision of a new bus to Zisaji College, the Union however asked the government to sanction the “required buses to all the colleges” as mentioned in its earlier memorandum. ENCSU further appealed the government to take immediate action in constructing Staff quarter and the border fencing to curb rapid ‘land encroachment.’ “When the citizens of Eastern Nagaland have sacrificed their land for the sake of development and education, the Government and the Department cannot do anything good to the people of the Eastern Nagaland especially when it comes to higher education,” it further noted. Calling upon the Government and the Department to “deliver justice to the downtrodden people,” the ENCSU pointed out that “Education is a pillar for the society and the state but if we are not provided with the quality education than we can’t hope for any bright future.”

He also added that being the land owner, the Kohima Village people should not create any hindrance as far as welfare programmes of the govern-
ment are concerned but to contribute positively and facilitate them. Dr. Liezietsu also thanked and appreciated people who had donated land for the upcoming Nagaland Medical College in Kohima. Speaking on the topic, ‘Restoring spirituality peace building in Nagaland,’ Dr. Wati Aier noted that people talk a lot but rarely put the talks into action. P Leonard Aier spoke on the importance of individuals and the power that we all wield by being part of the society while deliberating on, ‘Political will power and Peace building in Nagaland’. “By the virtue of being a part of the society, we are all political players and the degeneration of social de-
mocracy cannot be blamed on anybody but us as citizens,” he said. “Everyone has will power. Society moves in cycles and to transform the society we must speak the truth,” he added. This was informed in a press release on the event from NEISSR. Liangsi Niumai lamented that the ability of women to contribute to peace building is sometimes not considered. Peace building starts in the family and women as mothers have had great influence on how values of peaceful living are inculcated in children, she said. She opined that peace
building is not about disarming weapons but also nurturing our children at the right time. Presentation from the panelists was followed by a Q & A session The panel discussion was organized by the MSW trainees of Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies as a part of their forum activity. A short video documentary titled, ‘Nagaland: A quest for Peace’ was also screened during the programme. Reviving oral tradition: ‘Story Nights’ with Methaneilie Solo Morung Express News Kohima | May 13
The most popular Naga artist of the 1990s, Methaneilie Solo Jütakhrie, today spoke at the second Café Conversations series ‘Story Nights’ of the Global Shapers Kohima Hub at Ozone Café. Interacting with a cozy gathering of young fans at Ozone Café, Methaneilie shared his passion for music and his journey as a musician in Nagaland. Born on July 2, 1955, Methaneilie was permanently handicapped after an accident during a game he played when he was six years old. Confined at home for most of his childhood thereafter, he found passion for music. “Back then, we could access music only through radio. I could not afford a guitar, so I made one with my own hands. I have preserved that guitar till today,” said Metha-
neilie. He said he drew inspiration from Jim Reeves, Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi. He has composed 187 songs, and performed in numerous concerts. “I do not follow any of the structured musical notes but learned to compose songs with my own Do Re Mi,” said the singer, speaking in Tenyidie, his speech translated to English by Kezhazer Angami. Methaneilie’s biggest challenge came in the form of poverty and lack of education; he could study only up to Class 6. He was once offered to sing in the Indian film industry in 1984 but declined, worried about his lack of knowledge in Hindi. Sharing his passion for music, the legendary artist said that he could compose two songs in a single day in his prime time. “Those days, my heart and mind was in music,” he acknowledged.
cians today do not work as hard as in the past. He advised young musicians not to indulge in substance abuse, to put their best efforts into music, respect elders and mentors, seek their advice, and stay rooted in humility.

the Nagas the most, a virtue followed by everyone back then. Despite progress among Naga musicians, Methaneilie was of the view that young musi-
Nagaland City Kuribole One of Methaneilie’s most popular songs, ‘Nagaland City Kuribole’, continues to be a favorite. Besides pointing out humorous idiosyncrasies of each tribe, the musician also points out the lack of integrity among leaders. “I wrote this song at a time when Nagaland was undergoing a crisis where tussles among the government led the elected members to continuously switch allegiance. I also felt that I needed to point out the faults of not just our leaders but our own people,” observed Methaneilie,
who wrote and composed the song as a satire. The inspiration to compose the song came while he was on the banks of Doyang River; it took 13 days for the artist to fully compose it. “During my prime, I could sing 40 songs in a row without taking a break but now, it is a struggle. Although my strength and energy is fading, I still sing for the love of music,” said Methaneilie. He concluded Story Nights with ‘Siekelhouko’ (meaning ‘future generations’) and Nagaland City Kuribole. Global Shapers Hub is an initiative of the World Economic Forum. Global Shapers, Kohima Hub, comprises of people from diverse fields and has been engaged in mental health programs, environment and sanitation projects in Kohima, apart from its Cafe Conversations.

mal,” he added. He told the students guidance was of utmost importance if they wanted to see their career moving in the right direction. A Mother’s Love is forever Vishü Rita Krocha Kohima | May 13
Nothing can stop a mother from giving all the love she can gather for her children. On the eve of Mother’s Day, The Morung Express caught up with a 68-year old mother, whose pride and joy lies in the children she raised to be responsible people in life. Hailing from Phenshunyu village, Gwanyule Keppen recalls how different it was in her time to bring up children. “By God’s grace, I have had no sicknesses as a mother but our days were different then. We didn’t have much facility for baby-care and it was much harder. That way, today’s children can be considered to be in heaven because of
the ample facilities that are available now,” she observes. Mother of 3 children (2 sons and 1 daughter), she has been greatly instrumental in raising them to be where they are today. The three children are now able to look after themselves, one of the responsibilities that parents feel, is met. The eldest son is an Advocate in the High Court while the second son is serving as a Captain in the Indian Army and the daughter, with an M.Sc degree teaches at the Rincho Academy. But to get here was not an easy journey, she indicates, even while recalling the period when all the three children were studying outside and she and her husband had to
make do with whatever money is left after sending it across for their children’s requirements. Fortunately, she was also serving at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office after she matriculated from T.M. Government Higher Secondary School Kohima. “I am blessed to have a good husband and obedient children…I am very happy,” she puts across. She also remembers her own mother, who taught her lifelong values, which are still deeply instilled in her and have helped her immensely in raising her own children. “My mother was always so loving and kind, and especially emphasized for us to have the fear of God. She taught us not to speak evil and to have kind

words to say all the time,” she expresses while evoking heartfelt memories of her own mother. Gwanyule Keppen is also a grandmother to 2 grandchildren. As a mother, it is her fervent wish that her other two children also settle down
while she and her husband are still healthy and well. She speaks for all mothers when she gives the impression that ‘a mother’s love is forever’. There is really no end to it and the wellbeing of her children is her greatest concern just as it is at the core of any loving mother.

Tripura to issue Aadhaar cards to over 32,000 Mizoram tribals AgArtAlA, MAy 13 (IANS): More than 32,000 Mizoram tribals staying in seven refugee camps in Tripura for the past two decades will be issued Aadhaar cards by the Tripura government, an official said on Saturday. An official of the Tripura Relief and Revenue Department said that the Home Ministry had asked the state to provide Aadhaar cards to these tribals to ensure hassle-free government benefits to them. The process to click photographs of these refugees will begin next week. "The 12-digit card will be first issued to schoolchildren of the refugees and then all the adults," Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Santosh Deb told IANS. The cards will be issued from the offices of Sub-Di-
visional Magistrates of Kanchanpur and Panisagar. About 32,900 Reang tribals -- who locally call themselves 'Bru' -- have been living in the makeshift camps in north Tripura's Kanchanpur and Panisagar sub-divisions, adjoining Mizoram, since October 1997 after they fled their homes in western Mizoram following ethnic troubles in that state. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, among others, had visited the refugee camps in north Tripura and Mizoram many times and urged both the Mizoram government and the refugees to end the stalemate. The Supreme Court had earlier directed the Home Ministry and the Mizoram and Tripura governments to jointly work for the return of these tribal refugees to their home state of Mizoram. "We are ready to return
to our homes in Mizoram, but the state's government is reluctant to meet our basic demands, like allotment of land for cultivation," refugee leader Bruno Msha told IANS. "In several meetings with the Home Ministry and Mizoram government officials in New Delhi and in refugee camps in Tripura, we demanded five hectares of land to each refugee family. However, the Mizoram officials summarily rejected this demand. If we do not have land, how will we survive?" he asked. A 30-member team of Mizoram officials last year conducted a survey in the refugee camps to identify bona fide residents of Mizoram. Despite several initiatives by the Mizoram government to bring the refugees back, they have been
reluctant till their demands for food and security are met. The refugees' apex body -- Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF) -- has been insisting that its three teams be allowed to visit Mizoram districts of Mamit, Lunglei and Kolasib to study the situation before they can be rehabilitated there. Mizoram Home Minister R. Lalzirliana said in Aizawl that the state government will not concede MBDPF's pre-conditions for refugees' repatriation. "It will be impossible for the Mizoram government to allot five hectares to each tribal family. The repatriated families will also have to wait for allocation of land for construction of houses and for farming in accordance with the guidelines of their respective village councils," the Minister said.
Manipur rights activist alleges police intimidation guwAhAtI, MAy 13 (ht): A prominent human rights activist from Manipur has accused the state police of using intimidation tactics to prevent her from helping victims of rights abuse. “Heavily armed group of Manipur police personnel landed at my parents’ Imphal house around 1.30 pm on Friday. I was away, but my 87-year-old father and 84-year-old mother were badly shaken by the incident,” Binalakshmi Ne-
pram told HT. Nepram is the founder of the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, an NGO that works for female survivors of violence. The activist said the police were trying to prevent her from providing relief and legal assistance to victims of rights violations by state forces. Nepram, however, remains unfazed. “We are not going to be bogged down by such threats. We will continue our work with renewed vigour,” Nepram told HT.

DiMapur, May 13 (Mexn): A one day seminar on ‘Promoting Entrepreneurship in Nagaland’ was organised by the trainees of North East Institute of Social Science & Research (NEISSR) in collaboration with YouthNet, Peace Channel and Quest Alliance at NEISSR conference hall on May 12. Speaking in the programme, one of the panellists, Bethel Tsuzu, Director of Mountain Music Academy and proprietor of Furtados Nagaland, shared her mantras of entrepreneurship summing it up as Curiosity, Passion and Frustration. Defining entrepreneur, Bethel said, he/she is an initiator, a challenger and a driver, who could be responsible and accountable and who is not only about making financial gains, informed a press release. She also cautioned about challenges like taxation and even competition from other entrepreneurs. Zuboni Humtsoe, co-founder and Director of Precious Me Love,
also a recipient of Nari Shakti Puruskar 2016, maintained that belief in oneself is of utmost importance. “Everything starts within oneself and everyone holds the power to change the world,” she asserted. Pointing out that the present world is run by entrepreneurs, she encouraged the participants not to wait for miracles to happen but create miracles of their own. Another panellist, Imtisunep Longchar, Director of the e-commerce site ilandlo.com shared on the basics of entrepreneurship and encouraged the participants to learn smart. “The most important ingredient in entrepreneurship is the target area of customers and the selection of products or services,” he said. He also stressed that creating a value of products or services is important and customers should be attracted with the right and genuine services, the release added. The panel discussion was moderated by Razouvikhol Luho, Operation Head, Nagaland Job Centre (NJC).
He reiterated that the petrol pumps are currently operating on extremely low margins, selling high-tech unleaded petrol/ diesel products in which the evaporation rate is very high leading to huge losses and other outstanding issues. Besides there are concerns like paying a certain amount of minimum salary to the staffers at each petrol pump, which has become unaffordable owing to the low operating margins, he said. The FAMPEDA's proposed move of a weekly off on Sundays and a single-shift operation on weekdays would hit the jobs of around 100,000 petrol pump staffers in Maharashtra who work mostly in two shifts or more depending on the location and business. The first step in this direction was initiated last Wednesday with petrol pumps refusing to buy fresh stocks from the OMCs with 85 per cent success. Earlier, some dealers had attributed the move towards saving fuel and Forex for the country, in response to an appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Sunday-holiday move could entail savings of around 20 per cent fuel burned in the country, they said. On April 20, the Petroleum Ministry said it "neither endorses nor approves" of the move by small section of dealers to keep their petrol pumps closed on Sundays. It said the move would lead to inconvenience to general public.

MuMbai, May 13 (ians): All petrol pumps in eight states across the country which had announced a weekly 'holiday' from May 14 and work on a single shift from May 15, called off their proposed agitation on Saturday, an official statement said here. Federation of All Maharashtra Petrol Dealers Association (FAMPEDA) President Uday Lodh said that in view of a review meeting called on Wednesday (May 17) by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) it has been decided to postpone the agitation till further notice. The Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers (CIPD) along with FAMPEDA was planning to launch the 'Cost Cutting Module' in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Haryana, citing low margins. The move would have affected 4,500 petrol pumps in Maharashtra alone, with 225 in Mumbai, said Lodh. The FAMPEDA move was in support of CIPD's call vis-Avis the various demands with OMCs, including a hike in dealer margins which have not been revised since 2011, and other long-pending issues, he added. The CIPD claims to have 25,000 members. "Next Wednesday, we have been called to discuss our agreement with the OMCs of November last year and related issue. So till then, we have decided to postpone our agitation," Lodh said.

‘Only bJP can provide good governance’ Nurturing Roots: TSUM 20th general conference held Kiphire, May 13 (MexN): State Secretary, BJP Nagaland and incharge of Kiphire district, K Thong has maintained that it is the desire of BJP to install good governance all over the country and even in Nagaland. “Good governance is the true implementation of welfare programs with transparency, accountability, efficiency, responsiveness, participatory, obedience to rule of law and with political will,” he said in his address at the district executive meeting of BJP Kiphire on May 10 in Kiphire. Asserting that good governance is essential to promote true democracy, he said people of Nagaland deserve good governance which can only be provided by the BJP if voted to power. He further alleged
that poverty has alarmingly multiplied over the decades, adding the rich have become richer and richer and the poor poorer. “Because welfare schemes had not benefitted the targeted groups of people but were embezzled by people in power.” Thong noted that the NDA government led by the BJP has launched various policies, programmes and pro-poor schemes in redeemed form to eradicate poverty and transform the society towards developed and true independent India. The BJP official meanwhile stated people are fed up of prolonged corruption, mismanagement of affairs and sick government machinery. “…However, during this critical juncture the BJP led by our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ar-
rived in the political arena with many new hopes and brought the wind of change and ushered in the new era of development.” He asserted corruption should be completely replaced with real all round development of the society. Meanwhile, Thong said good, qualified, talented and God fearing people should join politics and participate to bring true social transformation. “They should be provided an opportunity in the decision making bodies to truly benefit the people. The BJP desires that good people should be given an opportunity to rule the country.” People of Kiphire district, he stated, deserve to move forward along with others and only BJP can uplift the same if only it is elected to power.

Public SPace Failing the Naga People, Tragically A special request to Deputy Commissioner Tuensang

n the news section of four papers, there is the same article, with slightly different titles and substance, but basically saying the same thing. The article in the Imphal Free Press, the Eastern Mirror, and the Nagaland Post is dated May 12, 2017, and the article in The Morung Express is dated May 13, 2017. The article is by the NSCN (IM) (hereinafter IM), stating why the Framework Agreement of August 3, 2017 (hereinafter the Agreement) will give the Naga people all they asked for and expect, telling the Naga people that all is fine and not to listen to dissenting voices saying otherwise. The article paraphrases the IM in some instances and quotes it in other instances. It is written on behalf of 81 senior members of the IM (and ends with the name of each, at least in the Eastern Mirror). I will presume that the parts of the article that are paraphrased are an accurate description of the actual words of the IM. The IM does not offer anything new to the debate on the Naga nationalist movement. It says that “the agreement will promote and strengthen harmonious interdependent relationship of the two nations.” (Emphasis added.) “It will provide an ample opportunity to the two peoples [the Nagas and the Indians] to building a highway of peace and
progress in the region in particular and South East Asia in general.” Moreover, “senior national workers from Nagaland state today that the agreement embraces all Nagas and their territories based on the uniqueness of Naga history.” This of course refers to the promise of Nagalim, the expansion of the Naga territory to take in all Nagas in the surrounding states, and even Myanmar. The IM then commences its usual condemnation of people and organizations that participated in the birth of the state of Nagaland: “It is pointless to glorify the people or organizations who made the accords of treason; it is meaningless to shift the blame to the enemies who outwitted and out manoeuvred [sic] the authors of the accords; it is ridiculous to invoke the names of heaven and earth for the political mistakes one has made; it is unscrupulous to justify the political wrong one has done. One must have the courage to speak the truth and amend the mistakes he has made for the sake of the people” (My emphasis). Then come the usual threats. “The leaders [of the IM] cautioned that 'rejection of this historic agreement will amount to murder of the precious second chance the good Lord has given to the Nagas.' However, the leaders took note saying 'there are some people from some quarters who are out there talking of other option....our people are witnessing the communal and
factional cards being played by the agencies of the GoI....'” No specific agencies are named and no specific acts by them are mentioned. To summarize, the IM talks as if India and the Nagas will be equal “nations.” It has affirmed that the Agreement has prepared the GoI to grant Nagalim to the Nagas, even though Modi, campaigning in person this past March in Manipur prior to the Assembly elections specifically said that the borders of Manipur will be honored. It has again called all those who brought the state of Nagaland into existence guilty of treason, and it has in guarded words threatened all those who it sees as complicating its mission, viewing its words as, and “the courage to speak the truth ...for the sake of the people.” This is the IM as savior, tolerating no disagreement or dissent. Here are some truths for the IM: First: Nagaland is a state in the Indian union, one of 29, and it is under the Indian Constitution. Second: It is clear to anyone who is willing to look and listen that the concept of Nagalim is dead! Third: I was told once by the editor of one of the Nagaland state papers that, to understand the Naga nationalist movement, I should try to see the movement through the eyes of a Naga. I have tried to do so and have only been partially successful. It is difficult for an Ameri-
can to show empathy for such a movement, so foreign to my own culture. But I have tried. Fourth: But I know this beyond any reasonable doubt. I know of only two Nagas who have attempted to view the Naga nationalist movement through the eyes of the members of the GoI and the people of India. There has been no attempt to empathize with those people and, quite to the contrary, when I have brought up the views of the GoI in relation to the Naga nationalist movement, the nationalists I have spoken to have brushed the GoI's and people of India's views aside as irrelevant, as “their problem,” with a show of arrogance that makes me wonder whether most Nagas have any common sense. Fifth: Here is the TRUTH. The Naga people are not getting a sovereign Naga nation nor are they getting Nagalim, ever! Sixth: It is long past time that the newspapers of Nagaland expressed the views that I have expressed; that they have the courage to present the Nagas with an opposing view, even if they disagree with it. It is a journalistic responsibility to do this, despite whatever risk it takes. The people of Nagaland deserve the professionalism and courage of what is best and most important in journalism: to present views that may prevent the people from marching down the road to destruction.

thought in the Naga politics is that killing is a good strategy to popularise our movement before the world. So life attempts have been made to kill five Chief Ministers who are Hokishe, Jasokie , SC Jamir, Vamuzo and Neiphiu and killed some ones who were their entourage but God has miraculously saved their lives. Thenucho the Speaker was included in life attempts. Dr. SC Jamir was most attacked and most wonderfully saved by God. Surviving the life attempts, he has been serving the country till date. When he was the Chief Minister, I wrote a letter to him telling that he should resign and become a peace maker. He replied me that once he too thought of doing so, but
because of Hokishe’s advice, he gave up the idea. He is really a learned man but he has been branded an anti – national by our National workers especially the NSCN ( IM ). For me I do not commend or criticize him but whether individuals or groups or tribes or any organization, if there is any divisive design, it should be mended. The resolution of the Nagas is to be one and to live under the same roof of Naga National entity. If there is any divisive attitude towards the unity and integrity of the Nagas, it is a sheer deviation from the original resolution of the Nagas. Such an attempt is very unfortunate. So any individual or any group or organization should endeavour to go together with the main stream of the Nagas for the better understanding and unity of the Nagas.

ne day a poor woman approached Mr. Lincoln for an interview. She was somewhat advanced in years and plainly clad, wearing a faded shawl and worn hood. "Well, my good woman," said Mr. Lincoln, "what can I do for you this morning?" "Mr. President," answered she, "my husband and three sons all went into the army. My husband was killed in battle. I get along very badly since then living all alone and I thought that I would come and ask you to release to me my eldest son." Mr. Lincoln looked in her face for a moment, and then replied kindly, "Certainly! Certainly! If

you have given us ALL, and your prop has been taken away, you are justly entitled to one of your boys." He then made out an order discharging the young man, which the woman took away, thanking him gratefully. She went to the front
herself with the President's order, and found that her son had been mortally wounded in a recent battle, and taken to the hospital. She hastened to the hospital. But she was too late, the boy died, and she saw him laid in a soldier's grave. She then returned to the President with his order, on the back of which the attendant surgeon had stated the sad facts concerning the young man it was intended to discharge. Mr. Lincoln was much moved by her story, and said: "I know what you wish me to do now, and
I shall do it without your asking. I shall release to you your second son." Taking up his pen he began to write the order, while the grief-stricken woman stood at his side and passed her hand softly over his head, and stroked his rough hair as she would have stroked her boy's. When he had finished he handed her the paper, saying tenderly, his eyes full of tears, "Now you have one of the two left, and I have one, that is no more than right." She took the order and reverently placing her hand upon his head, said, "The Lord bless you, Mr. President. May you live a thousand years, and may you always be the head of this great nation."

What's happening? The mixture you created should go bubbly and taste like a lemonade, soda, fizzy or soft drink, if you added some sugar it might even taste like a lemon flavoured soft drink you've bought at a store. The bubbles that form when you add the baking soda to the lemon mixture are carbon dioxide (CO2), these are the same bubbles you'll find in proper fizzy drinks. Of course they add a few other flavored sweeteners but it's not much different to what you made. What you'll need: If you are wondering how • Lemon the carbon dioxide bubbles • Drinking glass formed, it was because you • Water • 1 teaspoon of baking created a chemical reaction when you added the lemon soda • Some sugar to make it (an acid) to the baking soda (a base). sweet here's a lot of people out there that like drinking fizzy drinks, so why not do a fun science experiment that leaves you with your own lemon soda to drink afterwards! A bit of lemon here and a bit of baking soda there and before you know it you'll be an expert at making your own fizzy drinks. Make your own lemonade softdrink with this fun experiment for kids.

Fundamentalists, Modernists, and the Rest of the Story Early 20th-century evangelical history was more than two camps lobbing grenades at each other Elesha Coffman | Christianity Today
G
eoffrey Treloar’s The Disruption of Evangelicalism: The Age of Torrey, Mott, McPherson and Hammond feels like the culmination of a very long project. Back in 2003, historian Mark Noll inaugurated InterVarsity Press’s five-volume series on the history of evangelicalism with The Rise of Evangelicalism: The Age of Edwards, Whitefield, and the Wesleys. He described the series as a whole, in the introduction to that book, as accessible to any reader, yet footnoted for scholars; global in scope, though grounded in the English-speaking world; and centered on “evangelical religion, as understood by the evangelicals themselves” while attending to historical context. Subsequent volumes appeared in chronological order, except for this one, which marks the end of the series but covers the penultimate time period, 1900–1940. The early 20th century is generally considered the low point in the long sweep of evangelical history. Superstar evangelist Dwight L. Moody died in 1899, and his mantle would not be taken up by Billy Graham until after World War II. Key events, including World War I, the Great Depression, and the rise of fascism in Europe, offered little to cheer. The period also saw the infamous fundamentalistmodernist controversy, which split numerous denominations and religious institutions along lines of biblical interpretation, doctrine, openness to scientific inquiry, and posture toward the outside world. In a move reminiscent of the “new academic hagiography” advocated by historian Rick Kennedy (see his discussion at The Pietist Schoolman blog), Treloar seeks to rehabilitate this era, casting it as a time not of narrowness and rancor but of breadth and creativity. Instead of two hardened camps, fundamentalist and modernist, lobbing rhetorical shells between their respective seminaries, Treloar describes a wide spectrum of evangelicals with
most of its vitality at the center. “Not all fundamentalists were the same; liberals varied in the degree of their liberality; and the centre was broad,” he writes. This perspective rescues little-known figures from obscurity, both expanding the roster of evangelicals and marking finer shades of differentiation among them. A Wider Frame The spectrum approach is a major strength and weakness for the book. On the positive side, Treloar is able to show how evangelicals accommodated differences of opinion on such matters as the role of the Holy Spirit and the need to balance evangelism with social service activities. Beneath the din of the strident voices that dominate other accounts of this period, Treloar argues, most evangelicals endeavored merely to live holy lives and make the world a little better for their neighbors, and they made good strides in both areas. At the level of leadership, rather than a cacophony of divisive, desperate attempts to make faith relevant in the modern era, Treloar sees a “flourishing of evangelical theology,” brimming with outstanding contributions from the center-left and center-right. Overall, Treloar deems early 20th-century evangelicals to have been enthusiastically
J
ewish women waited for a messiah. They hungered to be the mother of the Savior. They bore children in the hope of a messiah. They raised, nourished, taught, and sheltered their children in anticipation. Anticipation of salvation. Hope for a victory. Faith in God’s promises. And so many years later—here we are, doing many of the same small tasks. Aching bodies growing new life. Nursing babies waking us through the nights. Small children with small needs. Mouths to feed, over and over. Floors to clean, clothing to tend to, physical needs to meet. Victory But we are in a different place in this story. We are not mothering in hope anymore. We are mothering in victory. We are not bearing children to clear a field for planting, we are bearing children to work the harvest. It can be so easy for us to get caught up in the details of mothering. The details of lost sippy cup lids, and watercolor messes. The demanding work of keeping the fridge full, and the laundry empty. The worry over high school grades and college scholarships. The work of buckling people in and out of our cars, spending the days in the details, and forgetting to see what the big story is. The sacrifices we make every day are not made in a losing battle. They are the sacrifices of the victorious. They are the cost of a winning war. Arrows God does not share our sentimental view of motherhood. While he delights in children, he does not speak of them in some cutesy photo shoot kind of a way. He compares them, not to tiny fairies, or dewey flowers, but to arrows. To weapons in the hand of a mighty man. God does not tell us to desire the blessing of children because their cheerful voices will make our houses feel cozy. He tells us to desire children who will contend with the enemy in the gate. It is natural and good that we delight in the little things with our children. God didn’t command mothers to rejoice over elbow dimples and the smell of a new baby’s head. He didn’t tell us to smile over them while they sleep, or to love the way they look in footie pajamas. He didn’t tell us these things, because He didn’t have to. That is the natural love of a mother for her children. But the love that we need, the reminders we need, is to love them, not for our own sake, but for what God is doing through them. We need a supernatural love. We need to believe in the victory, to mother in faithful confidence. “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies. That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger” (Psalm 8:2). These mouths we are feeding—these are the mouths that God has ordained to use to silence the enemy.
one (Noll) was based in the United States, and this perspective means that readers familiar with only American evangelical history encounter much new material. Treloar, an Australian, taps archival sources not commonly used by American scholars and melds voices from around the British Commonwealth into the debates he covers. In this way, he makes good on the series’s promise to help explain how a movement once limited to the (impressive) ambit of George Whitefield’s travels came to circle the globe. This is not just an American, or even just a transatlantic, story. Understandably, however, wide geographic focus comes at the expense of contextual specificity. It is not clear, for example, that all of the voices Treloar brings into his discussions thought of themselves as interlocutors or even knew of one another’s existence. He does not describe the circulation of the periodicals he uses as primary sources or map connections among the church and parachurch organizations to which people belonged. As a result, the first and last thirds of the book feel abstract, like a meeting of minds who likely never met. A sense of disembodiment is not uncommon in works of intellectual and theological history, but accounts
ISAE was one of several ventures (including conferences, fellowship programs, and the magazine Books & Culture) established in the 1980s and ’90s to study and further evangelicalism. These ventures drew funding from the Lilly Endowment, Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Luce Foundation, and they involved an identifiable cohort of scholars, almost all of them white, male, theologically attuned, self-identified evangelicals. In scholarly circles, these men were sometimes jokingly called the “evangelical mafia.” Start Your Small-Group Ministry The ISAE shut down in 2014. Books & Culture followed in 2016. Noll and other members of the “evangelical mafia” have retired or moved into administrative positions. Books about evangelicals continue to appear steadily, but fewer and fewer of them reflect the sympathetic, theologicallycentered insider perspective of the previous generation’s work. To cite just a few recent examples, Bethany Moreton, Timothy Gloege, Kevin Kruse, and Darren Grem have all examined the influence of American business cultures on evangelicalism. In addition to this “business turn,” gender and sexuality have become central concerns in studies of evangelicalism. Work on evangelical ideas, such as Molly Worthen’s Apostles of Reason, has become more pointed. The current bestselling book on the topic, Frances Fitzgerald’s The Evangelicals: The Struggle to Shape America, focuses on politics rather than on theology, is highly critical of evangelicalism, and is written by an East Coast journalist with numerous writing awards but no insider credentials. The field is changing, dramatically. Treloar writes about one era of disruption in evangelicalism. His book appears at another. It remains to be seen whether polarization will rend the movement this time or if theological creativity and a robust, irenic center can emerge again to carry the day. Elesha Coffman is assistant professor of history at Baylor University and author of The Christian Century and the Rise of the Protestant Mainline (Oxford University Press).

ecumenical, a corrective to their portrayal as relentlessly fissiparous. But the spectrum approach also proves unruly. A dizzying array of figures populate these pages, with the individuals mentioned in the subtitle making only token appearances. (Thomas Chatterton Hammond, a little-known Irish-Australian clergyman, shows up on page 199, while the flamboyant Pentecostal preacher Aimee Semple McPherson does not arrive until page 214.) The right end of the spectrum comes into focus as fundamentalists separate themselves from evangelicalism—a development that Treloar insists took place after World War I, even though The Fundamentals were published between 1910 and 1915. But the left end remains vague, as Treloar stretches it to include men such as the progressive Woodrow Wilson, the socialist Sherwood Eddy, and the Federal Council of Churches architect Samuel McCrea Cavert. Considering that evangelicals defined themselves against the very things that these men stood for, it makes little sense to tuck them cozily under one big tent. Treloar’s attention to the wider English-speaking world is also a strength and a weakness of the book. Of the five authors in the series, only
of real-time arguments help to bring such works down to earth. Personality conflicts and ideological fisticuffs are in short supply here. Church Compensation Survey The middle third of the book is quite different. It focuses on World War I, an event that Treloar contends has been under-studied in religious history. (Philip Jenkins’s The Great and Holy War, which was published too recently to contribute more than a footnote to Treloar’s book, begins to fill this gap, but much more can and should be written.) This section is firmly, and often movingly, rooted in historical context, describing the ways men mobilized and ministered, doubted and died. The problem in this section is that the gradations of evangelical belief and practice that figure so prominently in other parts of the book start to disappear. Some of this blurring is warranted, historically, as the war made common cause among people who might otherwise disagree about the chronology of Genesis 1 or the role of indigenous leaders in global missions. Here, though, Treloar writes of “evangelicals” who are undifferentiated among themselves or from anyone else. Sample sentences, from the span of a few pages in chapter 6, read, “Evangelicals were well aware of the temptations that accompanied military life. … Evangelical ideals of womanhood readily adapted to the demands of war. … The norm among evangelicals was a measured acceptance of the war and the resolution to do what they could to secure victory on both the home and foreign fronts.” None of these sentences is footnoted to a source for greater elaboration. It is impossible to discern precisely who or what Treloar is describing. The End of an Era The Disruption of Evangelicalism not only marks the end of a fivebook series but also suggests the end of an era in evangelical scholarship. In the acknowledgements for volume 1, Noll thanks the “network of historians connected by Wheaton College’s Institute for the Study of American Evangelicals,” an institute that Noll and fellow historian Nathan Hatch founded in 1982. Space for more How can we do this better on the second Sunday of every May? Rather than doing less (as many disappointed and resigned women have concluded), I think we need to do more. We need more than the distribution of flowers and a round of applause. We need more than narrow or idealized notions of motherhood. We need more than an insistence on a single emotion. What all mothers and women need on Mother’s Day is the same thing the church needs every day: that we “keep the unity of the Spirit” (Eph. 4:3) and “love one another deeply, from the heart” (1 Pet. 1:22). We can start by acknowledging the realities of mothering in a deeply fallen world. Let’s give the overworked Proverbs 31 woman a rest and instead make room for the complexities and struggles we all live with every day. To do this, pastors can invite women to share their stories, however they choose to tell them. Let’s bring the microphone to the pews (as my church does), making time and space for stories both beautiful and tragic. For those who cannot speak, we can invite them to write their story. Perhaps the church bulletin can host a collection of brief quotes or stories from members of the church. Through these avenues of honest sharing and listening, those without a mother may find a mother in Christ. Those without children may find spiritual sons and daughters. Yes, there will be laughing and rejoicing, if we are so blessed. And, yes, there will also be tears. We cannot be afraid of this. We’re good at praising and celebrating together, but we often don’t know how to lament together—and it’s time we learned. The Psalms give us both permission and language to complain, rejoice, and grieve together. And Mother’s Day gives us a critical day on which to do so. Pastors, who themselves tirelessly “mother” and “father” their congregations, can make space on this day to allow the body of Christ to truly see and serve one another anew. If we do this, will some still feel deep hurt or will mistakes still be made? Of course. We, the church, will never be more than human. But if we do not take risks and reimagine how we honor one another on this day, we’ll miss another chance to be the family Christ died for.
A
week ago, as I anticipated this upcoming Mother’s Day, I felt ready to fight for my flower. Each year, I look forward to the carnation and the vague, glowing tribute churches often pay to women who mother. After all, haven’t I earned it? After birthing and raising a daughter and (count them) five sons, after 29 years of the daily dying-to-self that defines mothers’ lives, I am grateful for any Mother’s Day payback—even for the greasy (delicious) donut my church handed out one year. But I am increasingly recognizing the tremendous cost of that flower (or donut). A few days ago, I posted a simple query on social media: “How do you feel about Mother’s Day celebrations in church?” In one day, 150 women responded with passion and detail—and the messages are still coming. After reading their stories, it became clear to me: Mother’s Day Sunday is, for many, the single most painful day of the entire church year. Like salt in a wound Most churches try to honor mothers in some way, but rather than attracting women with its special focus, legions either stay home from church on that day or leave their church service filled with resentment and pain. Many women have told me why. Single mothers describe it as momentary attention that lapses into invisibility again once the day passes, leaving them struggling to raise their kids alone. Bonnie, a mother of a beautiful adopted daughter, tells of one Mother’s Day when her pastor invited children to hand out chocolate kisses to their mothers. He was very specific about who qualified: They were to give their candy “not to the women who are like a mother to you” but only to “the woman who gave birth to you.” Bonnie was horrified and actually shouted out, “Or who has adopted you!” Sandra lost her own mother early and was never able to have children of her own despite her great longing. On Mother’s Day, with neither a mother nor children, she tells me she feels “like I have been abandoned by God’s people.” Shari, who tragically lost her daughter to cancer, finds her church celebrations devastating, like “salt in a wound.” On this day, many women grieve children they never had or children they have lost. They grieve mothers they never had or mothers they have lost. I, too, carry great grief on this day. However well-meaning, Mother’s Day messages from the pulpit can be disturbing as well. Amy, who married later in life and is mom to stepchildren, told me she is weary of sermons that glorify motherhood and tending a home. Some pastors go so far as
and housekeeping is a woman’s highest calling. Judy, a theologian who teaches around the world, recalls a Mother’s Day sermon on the Proverbs 31 woman ending with an admonition for all women to recommit themselves to domestic tasks and to “working with their hands.” Carrie, a devoted mother of five who has beautifully cared for her home and family, tells me after the day’s specially-themed sermon on motherhood, inevitably, she leaves feeling like a failure. Let us all confess: Mother’s Day is a mess. At this point, though, I want to pause and give a bouquet to every pastor. Whatever the mistakes and insensitivities, ministers have an impossible job as they face Mother’s Day. How can they honor mothers without wounding others in their congregation? Most deserve kudos for bravely stepping into this minefield. But perhaps they shouldn’t even try? Many of the 150 respondents I asked said, “Leave Mother’s Day to Hallmark and leave church for worshiping Jesus.” But I protest. We can’t—and shouldn’t—ignore it We can’t ignore Mother’s Day in church any more than we can ignore Christmas— nor should we. The world blares messages of consumerism, yes, but also of love and appreciation for mothers. For the church to stay silent would be worse than celebrating it badly. All of us who mother (whether we work outside the home or not) need this affirmation and encouragement in a culture that appears increasingly to honor work and career above raising children. Despite the sometimes unbiblical hyperbole we may hear in sermons (that motherhood is our highest calling), the truth remains that mothering is a high calling, designed by God himself as a crucible of love, blessing, and regeneration. Mary, the mother of Jesus, reminds us all to willingly offer our bodies and lives for the bring-
God. Mothers in the trenches can forget this. During the 20-plus years I was either pregnant, nursing, or potty training, I struggled, unseen and silent, with combat fatigue and exhaustion. During that period in particular, Mother’s Day—at home and at church—offered a day of renewal and remembrance. And remembrance is biblical. The fifth commandment, “Honor your father and your mother” (Ex. 20:12), was hardly an afterthought of God’s. It was and still is essential to the well-being of God’s people. Of course handing out gifts in church one day a year doesn’t allow us to tick that command off our to-do list, but it does afford us a moment to corporately respect and pay tribute to those who gave us life, regardless of their character. If we forgo Mother’s Day in church, we all lose out in another way as well. In our culture of identity politics, we are increasingly encouraged to define ourselves by our traumas: childless, abused, motherless, disowned. Yet as members of the body of Christ we are called to something more: to “rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” (Rom. 12:15). We must honestly acknowledge our own afflictions even as we’re beckoned to enter into others’ joys and afflictions. Mother’s Day offers another chance to enlarge our compassion and empathy. Let the exhausted pregnant woman comfort the grieving childless woman. Let men give praise to their wives. Let children thank their spiritual mothers. Let the happily mothered comfort the abandoned daughter. In other words, let the body of Christ minister to its own members—for this is our truest family. Jesus himself reminds us of this when he asked rhetorically, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers? … Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother” (Matt.12:48, 50 ESV). Jesus constantly deepened and en-

Nirbhaya-like brutal gang-rape, murder in Haryana, 2 arrested
Representational Image
ChandIgarh, may 13 (IanS): In a savage gang-rape reminiscent of the 2012 Nirbhaya incident, a young woman from Haryana's Sonepat district was abducted and brutally raped and murdered, with her head and face smashed with a blunt object and crushed under the wheels of a vehicle. Two men, including her neighbour who was stalking her, have been arrested. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has expressed "deep shock" over the rape. The incident comes days after the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of four accused in the December 16, 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape. The Haryana woman, aged around 22 years, went missing on May 9, as per the complaint filed by her family. Her body was found on the outskirts of Rohtak town, 70 km from national capital Delhi, early on Friday. Police officials said that forensic experts have disclosed that the victim was sexually assaulted and her body was badly mutilated. Stray dogs had bitten off parts of the body. S.K. Dhattarwal, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, said that the post-mortem examination of the body indicated sexual assault, mutilation of private parts and murder. Police was told that the vic-
tim's head and face were smashed with a hard object and crushed under the wheels of a vehicle. This, according to the police, was done to hide her identity. The Haryana Police have launched an investigation into the brutal gang rape and murder. The arrested men were being interrogated, a police officer told IANS. The two men arrested have been identified as Sumit and Vikas. Police said that Sumit was a neighbour of the victim in Sonepat and had been stalking her. He was pressurising her to marry him but she had refused. Police officials alleged that Sumit planned the gang rape and murder to teach a lesson to the woman. Expressing deep shock and outrage over the brutal gang rape and murder, Congress President Sonia Gandhi hoped that the Haryana government would take action against the perpetrators. "This savage and bone chilling incident has shocked the conscience of the nation, reminding each one of us about the crying need of revisiting the important issue of women's safety and security," she said. A mentally unstable Nepalese woman was brutally gang raped and murdered by seven men in Rohtak district in February 2015. The accused were awarded the death penalty by a local court in December 2015.

INdIa set to sKIP CHINa's BRF due to CPeC CoNCeRNs
BeIJIng, may 13 (PTI): India is likely to boycott China's Belt and Road Forum (BRF) beginning here tomorrow (Sunday) in view of sovereignty concerns related to the ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of the initiative that is expected to figure prominently in the two-day meet. While there is no official word with the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi declining to comment, informed sources told PTI that India may not take part in BRF. This is contrary to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's announcement last month that India will have a representative at the meet, a prestigious initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping. The likely boycott will leave India in a tight spot as China in the last few days has managed to rope in even the US, which yesterday agreed to send a top official after Washington clinched a lucrative trade deal. "It is a tricky situation for India because it cannot get any diplomatic dividend by attending it. On the contrary, it may be em-
barrassing for the Indian delegation to sit through the programme when CPEC is highlighted and may have to walk out," an Indian scholar attending the BRF meeting told PTI on the condition of anonymity. Indian officials maintain that New Delhi has objections related only to the CPEC traversing through Gilgit and Baltistan of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India treats the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir as its integral part. Staying away from the meet may "isolate" India in the region as all countries in South Asia -- barring Bhutan which doesn't have diplomatic relations with China -- were participating, a top Chinese official in New Delhi had said last week. He had warned that New Delhi's absence "will not be constructive" for bilateral ties. Playing down India's absence at the meeting, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang had told the media yesterday that Indian scholars would be attend-
ing the meeting. Japan, at the receiving end of strong criticism from China in the last few years particularly over the disputed islands in the East China Sea, has also agreed to send a high level political delegation that includes a vice minister. The May 14-15 summit, which is expected to strengthen Xi's power base as he gets set to begin his second five-year tenure later this year, will be attended by 29 heads of state and government, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. A number of other countries, including South Korea, France, Germany and UK, have deputed either ministerial or official delegations. While this is the outcome of hectic diplomatic lobbying by China, unlike India, none of the other countries have sovereignty related issues with the One Belt and One Road (OBOR) initiative. Considering CPEC's importance in the plan -- it is the only project at present with
prospects of delivering early results -- Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to take centrestage to highlight its significance as a "game changer" for his country. He is leading perhaps the largest delegation -- four chief ministers and five federal ministers. Besides Sharif, the only head of government to be represented at the summit will be Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe who will be in Beijing immediately after hosting his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at home. From Nepal, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Krishna Bahadur Mahara will lead the delegation. Bangladesh and the Maldives will also have official representations. India's stand on the meet comes after a year of bilateral discord over China's stubborn opposition to its entry into the NSG and a UN ban against Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Muhammad leader Masood
Azhar. China, too, protested India's decision to permit the Dalai Lama last month to visit Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims as South Tibet. In the last few days, China has tried to assuage India's feelings by asserting that the commercial CPEC will not have any impact on its stand that the Kashmir issue should be settled by India and Pakistan through dialogue. India's worries over the 3,000 km long CPEC project connecting Pakistan's deep-water port Gwadar and China's Xinjiang stem from the fact that Gwadar, which was taken over by the Chinese, will become a future naval base. The Gwadar port across the waters from Mumbai's port housing the Indian Navy's western naval command provides a berth for China in the Arabian Sea and to the Indian Ocean. China has already announced plans to station its marines there as well in Djibouti in Horn of Africa in Indian Ocean.
Bengal civic polls a crucial BJP seeks AFSPA in Kannur after RSS worker's murder test for all political parties
KolKaTa, may 13 (IanS): The ruling Trinamool Congress' capability to continue its electoral successes and the BJP's bid to become the main opposition force would be tested amid a revival of the Gorkhaland demand in the hills as seven West Bengal civic bodies go to the hustings on Sunday. The elections to the municipalities spread across five districts in northern, central and the southern tip of the state would provide a peek into the mind of the voters in the small towns and pose a challenge for the Left Front and the Congress to revive their fortunes in the backdrop of recent electoral results where they lost ground to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The polls would be held for four municipalities in the northern Bengal hills Darjeeling, Kurseong and Mirik Notified Area Authority in Darjeeling district and Kalimpong in Kalimpong district. Besides, Raiganj municipality in North Dinajpur district, Domkal in Murshidabad district and Pujali in South 24 Parganas district are also up for grabs. The Trinamool is a principal force in all the areas, and is hoping to break the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's stranglehold in the hills by tying up with the Gorkha National Liberation Front. State Tourism Minister and Trinamool Congress leader from north Bengal Gautam Deb was confident of an impressive show in the hills. "We will win in Kurseong. We will also perform fairly well in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. People want to know why the GJM could not carry out necessary development in the hills despite being in power for so long. "There was a fear psychosis among the people. Most of the local body elections were uncontested for many years. People could not come out to vote independently. The situation has changed under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee," Deb said, alluding to the Chief Minister's repeated trips to the hills and the development projects and sops she has announced for the region. The hills have not witnessed a local
election in the past five years. GJM chief Bimal Gurung, however, accused the state government of not providing the necessary funds for development. "The state government is talking about development here. I ask where is the development and where is the money sanctioned for the hills," he questioned. To strike an emotive cord among the people, the GJM has revived the call for a separate Gorkhaland state and tried to turn the polls into a Gorkhaland-vs-Bengal issue. In Domkal, the Trinamool is up against an undeclared seat adjustment between the Congress and Left Front major Communist Party of India-Marxist. Murshidabad is one of the very few strongholds of the Congress, and the party is going all out to woo the electorate. However, state Congress chief and Murshidabad strongman Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused the Trinamool of using the administration to slap false cases and arrest his party leaders. "In Domkal, without any investigation whatsoever, Congress leaders are named in false cases and arrested and under such provisions that they don't get bail," he said. But at the other end, the Trinamool is banking on the large number of former Congress leaders, who have crossed over to its fold in recent times. The LF-Congress, who have cobbled up unofficial seat understandings in Raiganj and Pujali too, is hoping to do well in Raiganj. Days after BJP chief Amit Shah said West Bengal was the "next target" on his radar, the party is campaigning hard to retain the momentum it received by finishing runners up in the recent Kanthi Dakhin assembly by-poll. Giving an indication of its intent, the BJP has fielded several Muslim candidates in Domkal and Pujali that has a majority of Muslim population. "In Domkal, seven of our 20 candidates are Muslim and in Pujali, we have fielded three Muslims among our 16 candidates," said BJP minority cell president Ali Hossain.
Kannur/ThIruvananThaPuram, may 13 (IanS): The BJP on Saturday sought the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Kannur, a day after the hacking of an RSS office bearer, which Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has brushed aside, terming it a one-off incident. On Friday evening, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh office bearer Biju in his early 30s was hacked to death at Payyanur in Kannur, the hot spot of political murders. The state Bharatiya Janata Party
leadership has accused the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist activists of the murder, which the Left party has denied. A dawn-to-dusk shutdown is being observed in Kannur district on Saturday. So far it has passed off peacefully with shops, markets and establishments -- all closed and public vehicles off the road. BJP's lone legislator O. Rajagopal and a team of party leaders on Saturday called on Governor P. Sathasivam asked for the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act to be imposed
in Kannur. Rajagopal said: "Today the Kerala Police has become an outfit of the CPI-M and miserably failed to protect the lives and property of citizens. "The police are always linked to the leaders of the CPI-M, who direct them. The only way peace can return to Kannur is with implementation of the AFSPA," he told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram. "The good thing is Kannur has an Army camp and we have requested the Governor to see that AFSPA is implemented," said Rajagopal. The police has regis-
tered a case against seven persons in the crime. They have found out that the murder of Biju was carried out by a gang of four persons, who came in an Innova car. Biju along with his friend was driving a twowheeler, when an Innova car knocked them down and he was hacked to death. The victim, who was out on bail, was the 12th accused in the July 2016 murder of CPI-M worker Dhanaraj. Vijayan who arrived in Kannur on Saturday told reporters that things appeared to be calm following an all-party
'No school bag' on Saturdays in UP govt schools
luCKnow, may 13 (IanS): In a bid to take load off students, the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has decided that Saturdays will be a "no bag day" in all government run primary and secondary schools, an official said. Students would engage in "joyful activities" and there would be efforts to enhance a positive relationship between the students and teachers on this day, the official said on Saturday. A go-ahead for this initiative was given by Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, who is also the Education Minister. Co-education would also be encourage in these institutions. The Education Department officials met on Friday and decided that the power of settling disputes in management committees would no
longer rest with the Manager of the school but with the Registrar of such societies. Principal Secretary (Secondary Education) has been directed by Dinesh Sharma to repave a proposal within a week and send it to him for approval. A directive has also been
issued not to put school teachers and the staff on census, election duties and also during natural calamities. The Bharatiya Janata Party government, soon after taking over the reins of the state had declared that it was committed to improve the education system.
meeting that discussed political rivalries. Vijayan said: "Those talks did a world of good and everyone should be careful to see that things are under check. It was an unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday (Friday) and it is seen as a oneoff incident." Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has blamed both the CPI-M and the BJP for the happenings in Kannur. "Both these parties are responsible for what's happening in Kannur and they have to find a way out of this," said Chandy.

From India to Britain, massive ransomware attack creates havoc neW DeLhI/LonDon/WAShIngton, MAy 13 (IAnS): A day after a massive ransomeware attack hit nearly 100 countries, including India, terrifying details were slowly emerging on Saturday as computers from hospitals in Britain to police stations in Andhra Pradesh were hacked into, keeping cyber security experts on tenterhooks. In India, a section of computers at Andhra Pradesh’s police departments were hacked. Computers in 18 police units in Chittoor, Krishna, Guntur, Visakhatpatnam and Srikakulam districts were affected. According to Director General of Police N. Sambasiva Rao, systems using the Windows operating system were hit by the cyber attack. The police chief’s computer with Apple’s iOS operating system was safe. R. Jaya Lakshmi, Superintendent of Police, Tirupati Urban, said the ‘ransomware’ encrypted data in some police stations, adding that they were not able to access data and hackers were demanding ransom in digital currency bitcoin to restore access. “The impact is minimal as we also keep offline record of FIRs and other documents,” Lakshmi added. Among the government agencies and companies affected globally were Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), the Russian Interior Ministry, Spain’s communications giant Telefonica, power firm Iberdrola, utility provider Gas Natural and FedEx in the US. According to media reports, teams were working round the clock in response to the attack, which resulted in operations being cancelled, ambulances being diverted and documents such as patient records made unavailable in England and Scotland. After denying reports that its computers had been targeted, the Russian Interior Ministry later confirmed that “around 1,000 computers were infected”. The ministry said the technicians had contained the attack. Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab detected that variants of a malware called “WannaCry” were used that encrypted the files. “Once inside the system, the attackers install a rootkit, which enables them to download the software to encrypt the data. The malware encrypts the files. A request for $600 in Bitcoin is displayed along with the wallet -- and the ransom demand increases over time,” Altaf Halde, Managing Director Kaspersky Lab (South Asia), told IANS. Kaspersky Lab confirmed that the company’s protection subsystems detect-
ed at least 45,000 infection attempts in 74 countries, mostly in Russia. “This is big and set to get bigger. We haven’t seen anything like this since Conficker in 2008,” Amit Nath, Head of Asia Pacific-Corporate Business at cyber security firm F-Secure Corporation, told IANS. Another cybersecurity firm Avast said it had seen 75,000 cases of the ransomware around the world. Europol also warned a “complex international investigation” was required “to identify the culprits”. Rail passengers in Germany were confronted with the ransom message when looking up train information at stations after Berlin-based railway company Deutsche Bahn was targeted. Carmaker Renault was France’s first company to be affected by the ransomware while Portugal Telecom and a local authority in Sweden also faced a similar fate. The ransomware infects victims by exploiting a Microsoft Windows vulnerability described and fixed in “Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010”. Microsoft also said it would roll out the update to users of older operating systems “that no longer receive mainstream support”, such as Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003. The seeds of the massive cyber attack were sown by a mysterious hacking group “Shadow Brokers” in April when it leaked a hacking tool called “Eternal Blue” developed by the US National Security Agency (NSA). Interestingly, the same tool is believed to have been used by another anonymous hacking group to gain remote access to computers, that brought parts of the NHS to a standstill. “It’s likely that regular online criminals simply used the information that the ‘Shadow Brokers’ put on the internet and thought ‘how can we monetise this’,” telegraph.co.uk quoted Graham Cluley, a computer security expert, as saying on Saturday. The attack was the latest in the growing menace of ransomware in which hackers deliver files to computers that automatically encrypt their data, making it unusable until a ransom is paid. Hacking group or groups were yet to claim responsibility for the attack. Meanwhile, the Group of Seven (G7) nations, which were holding a two-day meeting (May 12-13) of Finance Ministers and central bankers in Italy, released a draft statement committing to join forces to fight the rising threat of cyber attacks.
Trump to back Palestinian “selfdetermination” on Mideast trip
WAShIngton, MAy 13 (ReuteRS): President Donald Trump will express support for Palestinian “selfdetermination” during a Middle East trip this month, a senior aide said on Friday, suggesting Trump is open to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict despite not having publicly embraced the idea so far. The comment by U.S. national security adviser H.R. McMaster came just nine days after a White House visit by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in which Trump vowed to seek a historic peace deal but stopped short of explicitly recommitting to the eventual goal of Palestinian statehood, a longtime bedrock of U.S. policy. Previewing Trump’s first foreign trip, McMaster also said he would use a visit to Saudi Arabia, his first stop, to encourage Arab and Muslim partners to take “bold new steps” to confront those from Iran, Islamic State, al Qaeda and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government “who perpetuate chaos and violence.” Trump’s travels, which begin late next week and will also include stops in Israel and Rome, are intended to “broadcast a message of unity” by visiting holy sites of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, McMaster told reporters. Trump’s meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, currently due to be held separately, will be closely watched for whether he begins to articulate a cohesive strategy to revive long-stalled negotiations. Most experts are sceptical of Trump’s chances of brokering a peace accord that eluded his predecessors. Trump plans, in talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to “reaffirm America’s unshakeable bond to the Jewish state” and in a meeting with Abbas to “express his desire for dignity and self-determination for the Palestinians,” said McMaster, a decorated Army general with extensive Middle East experience. Trump is expected to meet Abbas, the Westernbacked head of the Palestinian Authority, in Bethlehem in the West Bank, Palestinian sources say. Palestinians were disappointed when Trump failed to mention a two-state solution in a joint appearance with Abbas on May 3. Trump sparked international criticism in February when, during a news conference with Netanyahu, he appeared to back away from a longstanding U.S. commitment to Palestinian statehood, saying he would leave it up to the parties to decide. An independent state is not only the aspiration of the vast majority of Palestinians but has been the objective of successive U.S. administrations and the international community. Asked whether Trump would bring Netanyahu and Abbas together in the same room during the visit scheduled for May 22-23, McMaster said that would be up to the president and the other leaders. “The final plans aren’t set yet,” he said.

Pakistan signs nearly $500 million in China deals at Silk Road summit
ISLAMABAD, MAy 13 (ReuteRS): Pakistan signed new deals with China on Saturday worth nearly $500 million ahead of Beijing’s international forum on its “Silk Road” trade and infrastructure initiative for Asia, Africa and Europe, the Pakistani government said. The memorandums of understanding add to $57 billion already pledged for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a network of rail, road and energy infrastructure that is part of the wider Chinese project also known as One Belt-One Road. The deals came as Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of the Beijing summit expected to be attended by leaders from at least 29 countries to promote Xi’s vision of expanding trade links. Delegates in Beijing will hold a series of sessions on Sunday to discuss the plan in more detail, including trade and finance. Proposed in 2013 by Xi, the project is broad on ambition but still short on spe-

cifics. Pakistan has been a flagship country and one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the One BeltOne Road initiative, in part because many projects are for power plants to alleviate the country’s decade-long energy-shortage crisis that sees frequent blackouts. “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a core
component of your visionary initiative of the “One Belt-One Road,” Sharif told Xi when they met at the Great Hall of China on Saturday, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.
special economic and industrial parks along the corridor, state Xinhua news service reported. Among the 3.4 billion RMB($493 million) in deals Sharif’s office said were signed on Saturday were: PROJECTS * Two cooperation Xi called for a swift agreements worth 2.3 bilcompletion of projects in- lion RMB ($333 million) for volving Gwadar Port and an airport in the southwest-
ern town of Gwadar, site of a deep-water port that is to provide an outlet to the Arabian Sea from the far western Chinese province of Xinjiang. * Establishment of the Havelian Dry Port in Pakistan. * Agreement on economic and technical cooperation (1.1 billion RMB) ($160 million) for the East Bay Expressway linking Gwadar to Pakistan’s existing highway system. China says that between 2014 and 2016, its businesses signed projects worth $304.9 billion in Belt and Road countries. Some of the projects could be in development for years. Some countries are wary of the debt burden that the Chinese financing could create. Pakistan, however, has expressed an optimistic view, with the government’s chief economist telling Reuters this week that the repayments will peak at around $5 billion in 2022, but will be more than offset by transit fees charged on the new transport corridor.
NASA drops idea of putting humans on first flight of new rocket WAShIngton, MAy 13 (IAnS): NASA has dropped the idea of putting astronauts aboard the first integrated flight of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft -- Exploration Mission-1, or EM-1 -- the first in a broad series of exploration missions that will take humans to deep space, and eventually to Mars. NASA’s original plan was to launch the test flight without crew, but in February, reportedly at the request of the Donald Trump administration, NASA be-
gan an effort looking at the feasibility of putting crew aboard EM-1. “After weighing the data and assessing all implications, the agency will continue pursuing the original plan for the first launch, as a rigorous flight test of the integrated systems without crew,” NASA said in a statement on Saturday. However, engineers will apply insights gained from the effort to the first flight test and the integrated systems to strengthen the long-term push to extend
WhatsApp fined over $3 mn for data sharing in Italy

LonDon, MAy 13 (IAnS): WhatsApp has been fined over $3.3 million in Italy for ‘forcing’ users to share their personal data with its parent company Facebook. The popular chat app has been asked by all of the 28 European Union data protection authorities to stop sharing users’ data with Facebook as there were doubts over the validity of users’ consent, Express.co.uk reported on Friday. “We’re reviewing the decision and we look forward to responding to officials,” the report quoted a WhatsApp spokesman as saying. Facebook took over

WhatsApp in 2014 and in August 2016, it changed its privacy policy to allow the transfer of its users’ personal information to the parent company for processing -a move that also created a furore in India. The Indian government told the Supreme Court in April that it was actively considering to put in place a law to protect data and curb sharing of individual data on social networking sites and online messaging services. NASA determined it is technically capable of launching crew on EM-1, but after evaluating cost, risk and technical factors in a project of this magnitude, it would be difficult to accommodate changes needed to add crew at this point in mission planning. The effort confirmed that the baseline plan to fly EM-1 without crew is still the best approach to enable humans to move sustainably beyond low Earth orbit.
“We appreciate the opportunity to evaluate the possibility of this crewed flight,” NASA acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot said. “The bi-partisan support of Congress and the President for our efforts to send astronauts deeper into the solar system than we have ever gone before is valued and does not go unnoticed. Presidential support for space has been strong,” Lightfoot added. The US space agency also announced its plan to
delay the scheduled launch of EM-1 in 2018. “NASA will adjust the target launch date for the EM-1 mission to 2019, and will execute its normal process in the coming weeks to determine an official revised launch date,” it said. “NASA will continue to work with the Administration and Congress as we move toward a crewed flight test on EM-2 and, right now, we are very focused on accomplishing the EM-1 flight test,” Lightfoot said.

THE MORUNG EXPRESS
Mother’s Day: The most Special day of all B Mankam Loika Konyak KUDA B’ Khel Dimapur
I
t is time to be thankful to our mother who has given so much and is still doing her very best that we feel loved and protected every day. There are some relations that go through the test of time and emerge as ever victorious. Among all such relations, the connection we share with our mothers is still really priceless as it is constantly being nurtured with love and kindness. There is no relation in this entire world that can be at par with the one we share with our mothers. Mothers are the perennial source of love and comfort for us. We feel really blessed because God has created a Guardian Angel for us in the form of our mothers. She is the one who rises before ev-
ery family member and go to bed after everyone has gone to sleep. We certainly cannot negate the importance of mother’s nurturing quality from our lives. It lays the foundation of our growth and development throughout our life on every dimension. Many Philosophers are of the view that Mother is the first school for the child and it is quite true as she is the teacher and guide for us . She teaches the life’s most valuable lessons in terms of unconditional love, Kindness and many moral values. Our childhood memories are sweeter because of the presence of our mothers. Hence, in no way we can ignore the role of mother. On Mother’s Day, we get the opportunity to revert back to our mothers and show our gratitude towards her. There are lot
many people around the globe who celebrate this day with huge sense of pride and ardent feeling. Many people share messages and greetings with their mothers. They even gift their mothers with valuable items and gifts which show that everyone want to ensure that their mothers feel loved and appreciated for their effort. It makes a huge difference in our relation with our mother if we take the initiative to strengthen it and appreciate it. As we go through our lives, we need to take time to come close to our mothers. She is the only one who can give valuable guidance whenever we feel the need and she can encourage us when we feel down. So it is time that we realize her significance in our well being that is driving force that is nourishing and ever loving. Love your
mother and Hug her tightly whenever you get the chance, show your love, care, affection, respect and appreciation as you commemorate one of the important days in their life. Even once in a year, make her feel loved and well appreciated. When was the last time you said “Thank you” to your mom for everything she has done? When was the last time you tell her that you love her? Admit it, we seldom appreciate her efforts and deeds. We seldom see the value of our mom even though she’s around us. This Mothers Day, although we will not be able to repay all her kindness, let us make this day extra special for her. Let her know how thankful and grateful we are having them around. “A Ver y HAPP Y MOTHER’S DAY To All the Mothers”
‘A letter to my father on Mother’s Day’ Moali Pongen
Dear Father! How are you? I hope you are good, wealthy and fine. First of all send my warm “Mother’s Day” wishes to your beloved wife “Life is short, treat her like a queen,” Lest you will drift away seeking another woman, if you displease her. Now addressing you as a “Father” is less out of courtesy and more for not knowing your surname to address you as “Mr. So and So”. On this special day, I address this ugly, painful letter just to let you know about the existence of a woman, whom you impregnated and abandoned two decades ago. 21 years, I grew miserably life has been all but pain and hurdles. However, the woman I grew with, though suffered more than me, still taught me how to survive in good terms. Mother. Woman. Pain. What do we talk about when I talk about Mother. On better yet as a Woman, what Kind of pain, she is familiar with? The Cramps? The Wounds? Or the pretty hurts when she is getting pressured against her body being fornicated by you….. Her beloved one? They say, writing is one way to exhaust your sufferings. My Words, I have nothing to sustain my inner thoughts, if not for this words, written with clouds of Cigarette smoke and a glass of whisky. Most of the time, She managed to wear blinkers like a horse in harness,
to sidetrack and blindside her nauseous existence. But with the darkness of the night, I saw mother penetrating her interior reality reminding herself the engraved scars of having being a love , illiterate woman betrayed by the man she loved the most, which till date bleeds my soul regardless of any tourniquet. The day you left, the world turned blind towards her. She was underestimated at home and society, yet still remained calm and serene, taking the blame to her, while painting your mistake with a patina of her own moral value being kept at stake, and often questioned by humanity, only tagged at the end as an unfaithful obstinate woman. Yes she was my mother, who despite the dismantle reputation still silently taught me how to love, forgive and be hopeful. Though it has been a decade since she left me, her lesson on this three goals ring as a legacy, shaping the woman in me. Love others as yourself, she often said, for everyone deserves love, no matter even if he is the most brutal criminal on earth. Perhaps she said that because, she knew how it is to survive without love, a painful shackle existence. Dear Father, Peace would have prevailed if everybody love others as our oneself.
Hope the only thing that keeps us going to that better unseen world and the only weapon, she survived with. Though she was betrayed by the man she loved, her daughter abandoned by the man she cared, with “Hope” she survived through the midst of the curse. With hope blended with unshaken faith, the taught me to seek life through vain. Nothing on the order of a stroll with a dear person not one hour of quiet and serene contemplation, all tainted by mundane worry and staleness. I guess that’s what a woman or less an orphan’s fate entails. Dear Father, getting disemboweled and dismembered would have been a preference to the tortures, which I have not known laid waited for me, when ‘Mother’s” left. Life would have been another beautiful story if you had for once thought about the destruction you are doing to an innocent life before impregnating dear woman. Sometimes she remained in the threshold of surreal brink of desperation with her tears at a blurred line for the love of her daughter and the life inside her which could have taken away despite the inhumanity shown to her. She turned a mute in the face of the menaces, sometime convincing herself it’s all a night mare, a seemingly unending bad dream, she never seem to wake up from.
But “Father, Mother has left already to an unseen peaceful world and without her; I am but a mere human existing without any priority. Without Mother Life is a dismantle, erratum of unorganized a posteriori. Hard blows and stitches, I sur vived rights, when even the starry night seemed so cursed. When all I have is a door to my defense, isolating myself in a room. Missing Mother and her words. And her long forgotten miserable life, which at least for Heaven’s sake, she found peace, ultimate peace in her coffer. And for me “I stimulate the brain to suppress these memories. Sometimes I mimic and emulate the same people to keep my emotions at bay and act accordingly because I can no Longer retain peace and hope form my own, without the existence of a “Beloved Mother”…….. Perhaps you must be thinking, why such an indecent letter on this special day?? But “Father” I wrote this letter just to let you know that beside the daily mundane struggle of earthly mothers pains and cursed fate, like my own mother also ought to be celebrated……………… after all mothers of my kind also existed……… So Father’s allow me to send greeting to Woman like my Mother in this letter Carry on Woman!! For the love of God held’s you deep With Agony Yours would have been Daughter
Revive Railway High School Dimapur Ashish Deb Ex-Student (1987 batch) Railway High School Dimapur

ixty five years is a long time and it dates back to even before the state of Nagaland came into being when the Dimapur Railway High School was established. During the earlier days, the school was known for its academic excellence. Certain records crated during those days are still to be equaled, leave aside surpassing them. Therefore, it is a moment of pride for all those who have been associated with this once prime institution. While congratulating the team of ex-students who made this event possible, we should also thank all the dignitaries who graced the occasion and added to the glamour of the celebration. Now, coming to the core issue as far as this school is concerned, it is quite disturbing to see this once vibrant institution being allowed to fade with the passage of time. The dilapidated condition of the school
structure and the meager remunerations to the faculty is the fallout of the lack of initiative on the part of the Indian Railways. It has come to such a pass that this institution, which lies in the heart of the commercial hub of Dimapur can be declared as a non performing asset (NPA) of the Railways whereas it is far from the truth. There is a fear that some vested interest groups may have drawn a long-term plan to scuttle its development and get it leased out to run under private patronage. If this is the case, then it will be a great blunder on the part of the Railways as well as the Government of India. As it is, the Railway High School, Dimapur occupies a space which is in the heart of the city, which can be otherwise called a prime location and is a property of the India Railways. It is sad that the Railways have shifted all important offices out of Dimapur for reasons best known to them despite the fact that it is the second highest revenue earner
in the entire Northeast region after Guwahati. This is nothing short of discrimination and definitely by speaks of step-motherly treatment. It is strongly felt that even if it is for the sake of making some amends, NR Railway should take up the issue by the Railway High School Dimapur and try to revive it to its past glory. They should rebuild the school and bring it directly under its administrative control. That way it would benefit the local students community and generate employment avenues for may aspiring youngsters. And if the same is handed over to any private parties, it would become another money making institution to the consternation of all parents. So the higher ups and decision makers in the Indian Railways should take note of this and revive the school under the Corporate Social Responsibility. It’s time that the people also get back something in the Modi dispensation under the “Act East Policy” which is famously propagated.
Mothers – An Irreplaceable Asset Vikali Shikhu
I
Unity Village, Dimapur
whole heartedly agree with Abraham Lincoln when he said "all that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother”. This is one beautiful statement every mother would be proud of. My mother is my pride and I thank God for blessing me with a Godly mother. She is truly an asset to her children and an inspiration to everyone around her. I have no basic experience in motherhood, yet my mother is the reason for my strength and source through which I proudly pen this article on mothers. A mother is a giver of life and therefore biologically, socially and morally entrusted with several responsibilities. The world expects her to be the custodian of all round development of a child. Should there be a faulty behaviour in children, the blame lands on the mother’s shoulder. A mother with a genuine personality always disciplines her children and put them into a habit of saying ‘SORRY’ and ‘THANK YOU’. "Having kids—the responsibility of rearing good, kind, ethical, responsible human beings—is the biggest job anyone can embark on” said Maria Shriver. When we view motherhood through economic window, raising children is one of the family's investments. Our homes are all about the limited resources to meet multiple and sometimes competing demands amongst the children. Moreover, there is no household in the world that doesn't need monthly necessities. Mothers with a good managing skill do wonders ending up with magical results in financial management. They also compromise their physical comforts and work round the clock. Valerie Young in her article "What’s A Mother's Worth?" mentioned "Every mother saves her family, thousands of dollars by performing services in unpaid domestic labor for free" All mothers are educators irrespective of being literate or illiterate. Let it be learning new words or learning by doing, anything to do with learning something new is education. My mom is a retired Teacher and I remember the way she checked our school work and homework every evening during my primary schooling. I grew up watching her tolerance and patience as she held the hands of my younger ones to be able to write better during pre-primary schooling. She delivered equal justice to her students in school and students at home
(we her children). Where there is a mother's prayer, things deemed impossible becomes possible, we are able to conquer the highest mountains and assured God's protection and safety from all the dangers posed by this world. This is my personal life experience from being blessed with a dedicated, prayerful and faith abiding mother. My mother is a priceless gift and a wonderful asset of all assets. Modern homes have many working mothers with a skill to balance between family and profession. We salute all the working moms and appreciate the way they organise things and live a strong social life too. We also have many social workers who are contributing to society much more than the husbands. "An educated woman with ambition is able to give intellectual companionship to her husband, help in making decisions about finances and education for the children, self-reliant, independent, and even contributes to the family's income," says Dr Snehal Shah. According to the survey conducted by TimesJobs.com, "over 60% of the surveyed organisations believe that working mothers are an important asset to them". You may be a mother or a stepmother but Mother's Day is your day. Who doesn't want to have biological mother to love and to be loved? It breaks our heart to see video clips of inhuman acts and ill treatment meted out by some step-moms. The significance of Mother's Day may not hit you hard if you do not have the heart of a mother to those children. Talk to yourself as to why God has placed them in your hand. You are NOT AN ASSET to them if they do not get unconditional love and care from you. There is a belief that a silent prayer of an orphan travels to God which is more powerful than anything we could ever think of. I believe step-moms would have manifold blessings if step-children find solace in them. There are definitely some ungrateful kids in the society. When your biological mother abandoned you for whatever reason, you definitely had the tag of 'unwanted child' the day you were born. That was the moment your parents welcomed you with open arms and immense love and held you so close to their hearts. Remember the years of your childhood and your mother's motherhood, the pain she had undergone to make you her own. She didn't care about your DNA because you are connected to her through heart and soul. God knows
that she is your asset. To me, if someone asks me the definition of a mother, I would say a mother is the one who raised you up. Robert A. Heinlein said "Being a mother is an attitude, not a biological relation.” When we observe some families around us, there is a dearth of moral values and ethics. A mother is definitely a mirror and her worth is reflected through the family's living condition. It is true that there are signs of a mother doing a great job. A mother is the pillar behind every child's success. Fortunate is a child whose mother is a channel of blessing, this is one classic example of an enviable asset because not all mothers carry the same weight or qualities. So also, there are enough signs that someone is a resourceful wife. I personally appreciate all self-made women, some of them I know are living with beautiful testimony. They were ambitious and already successful prior to meeting their husbands. Together, they make a great couple excelling in their endeavours today. I always believe a strong woman would make her husband great and successful in life. There is one online quote I really like that says "God and a good wife are two best things a man could have in life". Multi-tasking the role as a home maker, wife, mother, teacher, mentor, nurse, chef, planner, builder, comforter, provider, counsellor, guide, bread winner, social worker, best friend and even that of a servant, a mother is one superstar who is to be bestowed with the highest respect and a lifetime of honour. Yet it is so painful to see some unfortunate wives not being considered as an asset by their husbands. Despite selfless efforts and sacrifices as his wife and a mother to his children, wives are sometimes rewarded with a recipe of disaster when there are three people in a marriage. Those evil women who have no respect for another woman and shamelessly raid marital homes should remember that MARRIAGE BED IS A SACRED ALTAR. On this auspicious occasion, I take this privilege to convey to all married men that one wife is an asset, but two is a liability. Your legally wedded wife deserves 'undisputed respect' for the reason that she is an important asset to you, your children, family and society. “A Mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place No One else can take”. Happy Mother's Day 2017 to all mothers including moms in heaven.
A letter from a mother Veronica Chishi Sanglir
A
Letter from a Mother has been on my mind for a long time and this month seemed to be the perfect month for me to write, since my son has just completed a year. A letter seems to me the perfect way to let my loved ones know how I feel about them. Through this letter, I want to tell my dear husband, my mother, my child and the other mothers about the joy of being a Mother and what an important and lovely part they play in my life. Firstly I address this letter to the most beautiful part of my life, my better half, my soul mate and my best friend. Rarely do I tell you how I enjoy this journey with you and so I want to tell you that over the years our friendship has developed beautiful strands of strength, grace and love which we will cherish as the years roll by. Everything may not be perfect, but let us remind each other of the moments that took our breath away and accommodate and give each other the space and love we can as we grow old together. As a mother today, I understand how it is so essential to have the love respect and understanding of our husband, because when our days are blue you give us a reason to smile, through your gentle words and touch. We feel loved by your gaze and are
comforted by your assurances and reassurances that you are always there. You are our life support system, by your confidence in us we are able to overcome all odds. Your fatherly figure is very vital and important for the well being of the family, so cheers to you my dear!! My dear Mom and all the Mothers around, when we first held our babies in our arms, the joy is unspeakable and something we can only experience as we walk in the shoes of a mother. I write this letter to show my appreciation and pay my respect to my mother and all the mothers and commend each and every one of you for the work that you have done which cannot be measured or rewarded. We give love that is unconditional, we hurt but we mask ourselves and try to put our best foot forward, we may not want to be in the driver's seat but sometimes time and circumstances compel us to and we are bound to play our role. Mothers, as I address you, I speak to myself too, we have a vital and important role to play. My son just turned one and I am amazed at how quickly he learns things though one step at a time. A powerful lesson that we are taught here is that, it is in our hands how we nurture him and give him values and lessons for life . Spending quality time
with your child, enjoying family meals and teaching and guiding him or her will never go to waste but they are the real investments that we make. Motherhood is hard work without a pay, alas it is the toughest job to excel in as we are never the best since we keep on learning till the end. It is a lot of work and we may not always be appreciated, however we do because we care and want the best. All we ask of our spouse and others is to appreciate us and empathise with us. I don't want you or the other mothers to sympathise with each other as it leads to self pity which is detrimental to our overall well being but yes encouragement and empathy is something that will be welcomed with wide open arms. Motherhood is patience and I realised how much I have toned down or how I have become patient since I had my first baby. It changes you and one is amazed at the transformation it has on you. Being a mother is a blessing as well as a responsibility that should not be taken lightly, as we are placed to raise up a child in the way God intended us to raise him or her. We give him horizons to dream and we teach them to value things that are beyond value. So mothers, as I remind myself, I would also like to take the opportunity to
remind you not to take your role for granted but to strive to bring out the best in your children. Lastly, my dear child.. oh my precious one!! everyday spent with you is so beautiful and I don't know whether you would remember any of this but the journey of growing up with you is so beautiful that it fills my heart with awe and wonder. Sometimes I wish that you never grow up and be as pure as you are. From your first babblings to your trying to being an adult to trying to be a hero and your curiosity just makes me so happy to be your mother. I confess at times I am angry, irritated and frustrated but when you smile at me and touch me with your little hands I forget all my pains and I just want to hold you in my arms. Dear child, as you grow up and become what God had placed you in this world to be, I want to remind you to love and give, learn all that you can, love with an open heart and be the best you can in whatever field you are placed in. Life is a collection of moments, my dear husband, my dear mother , my fellow mothers and my dear child, we live our life once, so let us learn to appreciate the little things in life and love the life God has blessed us with and give the best we can in the little time that we are here. Happy Blessed Mothers Day to all the Lovely Mothers

avid Beckham reportedly wants to buy his wife Victoria an island to mark 20 years since they first met. The retired soccer star has been looking at territories in the Caribbean as he thinks it would be the perfect gift so he and his wife, along with their children Brooklyn, 18, Romeo, 14, Cruz, 12, and Harper, five, could go on holiday without being bothered. A source told Heat magazine: ''David loves the idea of the family having their own A-list status symbol and has always envied Sir Richard Branson owning Necker Island. ''The whole family would be able to enjoy holidays without worrying about paparazzi or fans wanting selfies.'' David - who met the former Spice Girls band member when she watched him play for his former club Manchester United and went on to marry the brunette beauty in 1999 - has set a budget of £9 million for the purchase and has been looking at islands in the Bahamas, where Johnny Depp has a private stretch of land, and the British Virgin Islands, which is home to businessman Richard's Necker Island. And the British hunk wants the children to play an important role in making decisions about their ''private paradise''. The insider said: ''He likes the idea of
naming the island after Harper, but I think the names for the beaches would be decided by the kids. ''They're not looking to go all Bear Grylls - they want a luxury property too. ''Victoria is not a big fan of boats but I'm sure she'd enjoy getting one to her own stretch of land. ''And David loves the idea of handing her the keys to her own private paradise.''

Not only does she dazzle on the acting front, but she rarely steps a foot wrong when it comes to her sartorial choices. And Thursday proved to be no exception for Freida Pinto as she cut a chic figure at the Dior Cruise Collection 2018 show in Los Angeles. Daring to bare, but in a sophisticated manor, Freida chose to don just her lingerie underneath her navy collared jacket. (Image Credit/Mail Online)

ormer "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell says he is not interested in the revival of the reality show based on singing. "I was asked to do it, and the answer is no," Cowell said in an interview with extratv.com about the show, reports ew.com. Cowell, who left the competition series in 2010, added: "I have no interest. My memories are when we first started. It
was a different time with Randy (Jackson), Ryan (Seacrest), and Paula (Abdul). You can't recreate that." He also said the last time he tuned in, "it was not the same show, just the same name. I left for a reason and I never regretted that." ABC confirmed on Tuesday that it struck a deal to reboot the show next season. The original show's host Ryan Seacrest is likely to return to it. The film was shot by Australian-born actor Leo McKern, who played a villainous cult leader in the film, and shows the band in unguarded moments behind the scenes on the set. "This is footage taken in 1965 of people who at the time were the most famous people on earth at the pinnacle of their collective career," Neil Pearson, a London rare book dealer who
is selling the footage, told Reuters. The band feature in around 10 minutes of the footage, which comes on the original 8mm film cassette on which it was shot, labeled by McKern as "snow scenes," which also features footage of the actor's family. The footage includes scenes showing the band tobogganing, joking around while playing instruments in a brass band, as well as more private moments, including Paul McCartney smoking a cigarette and taking pho-

WEST BROMWICH, May 13 (aP): Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has had the golden touch in his first season in the English Premier League, all the way through to the titleclinching game. With Chelsea scoreless at West Bromwich Albion on Friday and looking like squandering the first of three opportunities to regain the trophy, Conte took the bold decision to remove star winger Eden Hazard and introduce substitute Michy Batshuayi, a player with just one goal to his name all season.
Within six minutes, Batshuayi was poking home a close-range finish and getting mobbed by teammates in front of Chelsea’s jubilant visiting fans. It sealed a 1-0 win at The Hawthorns and Batshuayi had just won the league for Chelsea. He later referred to himself as an “unexpected hero” in a Twitter post. “The beauty of football,” Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas said, “a player who didn’t play a lot scores the winning goal for the championship.” Batshuayi’s 82nd-minute strike was only his sec-
ond league goal, and first since August, in a tough first season in England. As for Conte, it couldn’t have gone any better. The Italian became the fourth manager — after Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Manuel Pellegrini — to win the Premier League in his first season in English soccer, and he was thrown in the air by his celebrating players in joyous scenes after the final whistle. His moves in the transfer market, his tactical switches, and his late substitutions have all come
LONDON, May 13 (REuTERS): Manchester City survived a stirring Leicester City fightback to claim a 2-1 win that lifted them above Liverpool into third in the Premier League on Saturday. The hosts, looking to cement their top-four status, were cruising when goals by David Silva and Gabriel Jesus put them 2-0 ahead after 36 minutes but Leicester hit back strongly. Shinji Okazaki smashed in a sensational volley before halftime and the hosts had a huge let-off in the 77th minute when Riyad Mahrez's penalty was ruled out because he inadvertently made a double contact while striking the ball. Jamie Vardy also missed a late chance but a nervy City hung on to move to 72 points with two games remaining. Liverpool have 70 points with two games left while fifth-placed Arsenal have 66 with three to play.
off. He has now won four straight domestic league titles, taking in three in a row with Juventus from 201214 before a spell in charge with Itay. Chelsea’s players have gone from being champions in 2015, to finishing in 10th place in 2016 following the worst-ever Premier League title defense, to being champions again. Chelsea — the league leader since early November — has won 28 of its 36 games, including nine of its last 11 matches, to resist a late title challenge by Tottenham. Second-placed
Spurs are 10 points behind Chelsea with three games remaining. It could get even better for Conte’s team, which has also reached the final of the FA Cup where it will play Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on May 27. For now, Conte will savor winning the Premier League. After long celebrations on the field, Conte returned to the dressing room and was showered first by a large tub of water and then by a bottle of champagne poured by a semi-naked Diego Costa.

SHaNGHaI, May 13 (REuTERS): Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson set the fastest time in the world this year when she won the women's 100 metres at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting on Saturday. The Jamaican left the rest of a quality field in her wake to finish in a time of 10.78 seconds, almost three tenths of a second clear of American Tori Bowie with Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast in third. Omar McLeod saw off a stellar field to win the 110 metres hurdles in 13.09 seconds, with the Olympic champion finishing
Hamilton back on pole in Spain
BaRCELONa, May 13 (REuTERS): Lewis Hamilton took pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix for the second year in a row on Saturday with Ferrari's championship leader Sebastian Vettel alongside the Mercedes driver on the front row. The pole was the 64th of the Briton's career, one short of his late Brazilian boyhood idol Ayrton Senna on the all-time list. "I'm super proud that we can get back up there. My last lap was so-so but I could see the fans cheering and all the flags," said the triple champion, interviewed on the finish line in front of the crowd in a new departure for the sport. Hamilton's team mate Valtteri Bottas, a first-time winner in Russia two weeks ago, qualified third, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen fourth. Dutch teenager Max Verstappen, who became Formula One's youngest winner in Spain last year after Hamilton and then team mate and 2016 champion Nico Rosberg collided at the start, will start Sunday's race in fifth place for Red Bull. Vettel, who leads Hamilton in the championship by 13 points after four races, had an engine change between final practice and qualifying with mechanics finishing off the job with only minutes to spare. He then had a big scare during the opening session
when it looked momentarily as if his afternoon was already over. "Stop the car, stop the car now," the German was told over the team radio. The four times world champion hesitated, however. "Seems better now," he said and carried on. "OK, box, Sebastian, box," he was told. "OK, you can push," came the eventual radio message from the pit wall as he set the fastest lap of the session before Hamilton and Raikkonen went quicker. Double world champion Fernando Alonso, whose McLaren broke down in first practice and was slowest overall on Friday, enjoyed a miraculous transformation -- and delighted his home crowd -by qualifying an astonishing seventh. Australian Daniel Ricciardo was sixth for Red Bull, with Mexican Sergio Perez eighth in a Force India. Britain's Jolyon Palmer, yet to score a point this season, had another disappointing Saturday after qualifying 17th in the Renault while team mate Nico Hulkenberg went through to the second phase and will start 13th. Canadian 18-year-old rookie Lance Stroll, also yet to finish in the points after four races, failed to get his Williams through the first phase and will line up 18th. Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa will start ninth.
ahead of Orlando Ortega, while Noah Lyles equalled the fastest time in the world this year in the 200 metres as the 19-year-old stopped the clock in 19.90. Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo from Jamaica set the fastest time of 2017 in the women's 400 metres when she demolished the opposition to cross in 49.77, finishing almost a second ahead of second-placed Natasha Hastings. South Africa's Luvo Manyunga claimed the men's long jump with a Diamond League record leap of 8.61 metres while Hellen Obiri recorded the quickest time
in 2017 for the women's 5000 metres when she blew the field away to finish in 14 minutes 22.47. Kenya's Faith Kipyegon won the women's 1500m in 3 minutes 59.22, the fastest so far this season, to finish more than a second clear of Ethiopian Dawut Seyaum in a commanding early season display. Bershawn Jackson claimed the men's 400 metres hurdles in a time of 48.63, a new meeting record, to leave a strong field including double Olympic gold medallist Kerron Clement and world champion Nicholas Bett trailing.
Hyderabad beat Gujarat to qualify for IPL play-offs

KaNPuR, May 13 (IaNS): Skipper David Warner led from the front to help Sunrisers Hyderabad cement their place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs after the visitors comfortably beat Gujarat Lions by eight wickets at the Green Park Stadium here on Saturday. Warner scored a 52-ball unbeaten 69 and was well complimented by young Vijay Shankar's 44-ball unbeaten 63 to lift the visiting side to the second spot in the IPL standings, with 17 points from their 14 games. Chasing a decent 155, Warner held up one end firmly after veteran medium pacer Praveen Kumar took two wickets in the same over to dismiss Shikhar Dhawan (18) and Moises Henriques (4).
The fall of Henriques brought in the in-form Vijay, who continued his good run with the willow to match shot by shot with his skipper. The left-right duo started cautiously, dealing mostly in singles and hitting the occasional boundaries to take the visitors to 82/2 midway into the innings. Warner batted sensibly to bring up his half century off 41 balls before Vijay joined the party to get to his fifty in 35 balls as the duo went on to add an undefeated 133-run third wicket stand to take their team home in style. Earlier, Gujarat Lions squandered an excellent start to post 154 after being asked to bat first. Gujarat rode on power packed batting by openers Ishan Kis-
han and Dwayne Smith to cross the 100-run mark in the 10th over and were in a comfortable position at the halfway stage of their innings. However, they seemed to inexplicably lose their wits and lost 10 wickets in the space of just 43 runs to be all out in 19.2 overs. Young pacer Mohammed Siraj and Afghan legspinner Rashid Khan were the lynchpin for Hyderabad as they produced some excellent bowling to contain the dangerous Hyderabad batting line-up. Siraj posted figures of 4/32 in his four overs while Rashid returned 3/34. Experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar had figures of 2/25 with fellow pacer Siddarth Kaul also bagging a wicket.
