“There is dissatisfaction within the ranks of BJP party (regarding induction and portfolio allocation) and we will take up the issue with the NPF,” said BJP national General Secretary incharge of Northeast, Ram Madhav. Madhav was responding to a query from reporters on Monday in Dimapur as to whether the party felt sidelined in the recent induction and allocation of portfolios in the DAN government to which BJP is a pre-poll alliance of the ruling NPF. He said there was a principle that the BJP and Congress cannot be in the same government and that it was something that the NPF has to think about. Asserting that the Congress MLAs wanted to disobey their party and has joined the DAN government, Madhav added, “We are watching the situation as more clarity will emerge later.” Related news on Page 5

Facebook’s Internet. org attracts 8 lakh users in India C M Y K

C M Y K

NEW DElHI, MAy 25 (PtI): Facebook has garnered 8 lakh users in India for itsInternet.org initiative that has been in the thick of the net neutrality controversy. As part of the global initiative, Facebook had partnered Reliance Communications to offer free access to over 30 websites without data charges to users in India. Facebook has faced criticism for launching the platform as it is seen as violating the principle of net neutrality, which is against any priority being accorded to an entity in the Internet traffic flow because of payments to service providers such as telecom companies. About 20 per cent of Internet.org users were previously not active on mobile data and thus, Internet. org is bringing new people online, the spokesperson said. Internet.org service is available for Reliance customers in seven telecom circles of Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Internet. org claims to have made Internet available to over 800 million people in nine countries, including India. The new Internet users acquired by Internet.org are now consuming over 100 MB of data a month outside of Internet.org, that is, paying for data from Reliance.

nlA legislators constitute forum to address naga political issue our Correspondent Kohima | May 25

The meeting of all legislators of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) was held here today and unanimously resolved to constitute a Nagaland Legislators’ Forum (NLF) on the Naga political issue comprising of members irrespective of political party affiliations. The Forum shall carry the voice of the House to all sections including the Government of India and the Naga national workers, according to the resolution adopted at the meeting.

The meeting was held at the Conference Hall of NLA Secretariat. The NLF reiterated its commitment to play the role of facilitators in the ongoing peace process and appealed to the negotiating parties to expedite the ongoing negotiations so as to bring an amicable solution that is acceptable to the people. The NLF also acknowledged the renewed efforts of the NDA government and the Naga national workers in resuming the Indo-Naga political dialogue. The NLF also appreciated the GoI particularly the Prime Minister

and Union Home Minister for their renewed sincerity in the Indo- Naga political dialogue. It also resolved to constitute a Parliamentary Working Committee on the Naga political issue consisting of all political parties. Further, it resolved to ask the NLA Speaker to set aside one day exclusively for discussion on the Naga political issue during the Assembly budget session. Earlier, an introductory speech was made by Nagaland state Chief Minister, TR Zeliang. NLA Speaker Chotisuh Sazo chaired the meeting.

AgArtAlA, MAy 25 (IANS): Discontinuing the special category status for North East states will be a “dangerous and disastrous move,” and “cannot be accepted at this stage,” said Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar in an interview to IANS. He said this would be “a big blow to the interest of the industry starved backward region which has been suffering from inadequate infrastructure and under-development for many decades giving birth to terrorism, ethnic unrest and numerous predicaments.” Cutting across political lines, Chief Ministers of eight North East states, ruled by Congress, Left and regional parties, have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to retain the ‘special category status’ for the mountainous states. Sarkar told IANS “The resolution was recently sent to the prime minister and the chief ministers of the eight states wanted to meet with him on the issue.” There has been no response from the PMO as yet. “The special status must be retained to ensure that these states continue to avail financial help and assistance from the central government to help bring the backward states at par with the other states,” said Sarkar, who has been the chief minister of Tripura for 17 years. Sarkar took the initiative and drafted the resolution, which was adopted by the other chief ministers. The resolution has been signed by Tarun Gogoi (Assam), Lal Thanhawla (Mizoram), Mukul Sangma (Meghalaya), T.R. Zeliang (Nagaland), Nabam Tuki (Arunachal Pradesh), Okram Ibobi Singh (Manipur) and Paban Chamling (Sikkim). All these eight states have non-BJP governments except Nagaland, where the Bharatiya Janata Party is a partner of the ruling Nagaland People’s Front-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur and Meghalaya are ruled by the Congress, while Tripura has a Communist Party of India-Marxist led Left Front government and Sikkim is ruled by the Sikkim Democratic Front. Sarkar said: “After studying the 14th Finance Commission recommendations

and the union budget for the current fiscal, it appears that the special category status of the northeastern states is going to be discontinued.” There are 11 states in India which are clubbed in the special status category. The special category tag was first given to the three states of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Nagaland in 1969 after the Fifth Finance Commission recommended additional assistance to some disadvantaged states in the form of central aid and tax holidays. Currently, the eight northeastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand have the special category tag. The funding pattern for the special category states for central schemes was in the 90:10 ratio where 90 percent of the total expenditure is borne by the Centre while ten percent is contributed by the state. Sarkar said : “Northeastern states of India deserve a special dispensation despite the region having abundant human and natural resources. The resources remain untapped because of the faulty policy of the central government.” The chief minister was certain that the region had huge scope to benefit economically through trade and other economic activities with the neighbouring five countries, including China. At the same time, he said the future of the northeastern states was uncertain because the performance of the North Eastern Council and ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) was “extremely disappointing”. Only 250 km out of the northeast’s 5,687 km outer perimeter touches India. The remaining represents international boundaries with China (1300 km), Myanmar (1643 km), Bhutan (516 km), Bangladesh (1880 km) and Nepal (97 km). Sarkar, a member of the CPI-M politburo, said : “The BJP-led present NDA government’s authoritative attitude is detrimental to centre-state relations. If the central government keeps all powers to itself, the country would not develop and governance in states would be weakened.”

Nagas are duty bound to fight: NSCN (K)

DIMAPUr, MAy 25 (MExN): The NSCN (K) today claimed that peace can only be established permanently in Naga country “once the aggressor India disbands her illegal military expedition in Naga country which is long overdue by any international standard.” A press note from the MIP of the NSCN (K) questioned as to when will “Naga champions of peace understand or accept the fact that India is the aggressor and Nagas the victim.” “Why cannot the elite intellectual organisations acknowledge that precarious political and security situation have been created because of forceful intrusion of Indian Armed Forces on Naga country?” the NSCN (K) asked. Continued militarisation for more than sixty years, it stated, is bound to “regenerate more aggression and

counter-aggression” and that the Nagas are “duty bound to fight for her dignity and God endowed ancestral sovereign existence.” The NSCN (K) further questioned “what is the hidden agenda of the Naga peace mongers that they choose to oppose Naga Sovereignty workers, proclaim non-co-operation and remonstrate NSCN/GPRN for armed resistance against illegal Indian Army occupation.” It asked as to why they cannot demand the Government of India to withdraw its Army from Nagaland and “leave the Nagas to her own preordained natural state so that peace and security can once again flourish in the land.” Terming this as “India inspired and instigated non-co-operation,” the NSCN (K) however asserted it would

“with even more ferocity and determination carry out armed onslaughts in a sustained manner until final capitulation of India’s militarised political hegemony over the Nagas.” It then cautioned “anti-NSCN activists and especially the leaders of non-co-operative areas” that if any NSCN/GPRN worker while in the line of duty “fall prey to India’s dragnet within their non-co-operative jurisdictions, entire responsibility shall be borne by them.” The NSCN (K) further directed any Naga individual or group “ascribing to India dictated peace and averse to NSCN/GPRN armed struggle for sovereignty... to leave the conflicting Naga area lest their opposition to rightful resistance is mistaken for enemy of the nation and incur upon themselves the wrath for espionage.”

AgArtAlA, MAy 25 (IANS): Over 13,000 employees employed in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in northeastern states would launch a stir from next month to regularise their jobs and attain uniformity in their salaries, a leaders said on Monday. "As first step of the agitation, we would send letters from all the eight northeastern states to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to regularise the jobs of the MGNREGS employees and uniformity in the remunerations," NEMEA president Joydeep Kar told reporters. He said: "After sending letters to Prime Minister, e-mail and tweet messages would be send to Modi in support of the de-

India to have 70 super computers for high-level research

New Delhi, May 25 (PTi): The Narendra Modi led government has begun the process of having 70 super computers in the country, which will enable high-level research in different fields for not only government agencies but also the private sector. The super computer will help India do research in different fields ranging from climate, defence and other areas, which a normal computer is illequipped for. The computer would have a capacity (speed) of half petaflop to 20 petaflop, but by the time the project reaches its full peak, the speed of the super computers can go up to 50 petaflop. A petaflop is a measure of a computer’s processing speed and can be expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second. “The project, which costs around Rs 4,500 crore is in its nascent stage. tion of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Information and Technology (DIT). These super computers will be in different parts of country,”

Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary of DST, said. The government has formed modalities to discuss nitty- gritty of the project. However, sources pointed out that it is ex-

pected to take seven years for the project to complete. “We will be having these computers across the country where scientists can come and do their research… These can do

calculations which your normal desktop or laptop cannot. It can help in defence simulation, computing, biology and material science and earth science,” Sharma said. He said even scientists/researchers other than those affiliated to government institutions can use the super computers. “Many companies have scientists doing their research. They need not go abroad for their research and can instead use these super computers,” Sharma said. However, there are challenges before the plan is undertaken at a fullscale level. First would be building both software and hardware infrastructure for such a large-scale project and making applications for these super computers. More importantly, having man power for running these super computers would also be a challenge as it would require training them.

The lender has launched a voice recognition feature, which will now be able to identify and authenticate customers based on your voice. Now, you no longer need to give out your account details or password in order to identify yourself. This voice recognition technology works on voice prints that will comprise more than 100 characteristics such as voice modulation, speed, accent, pronunciation etc. These will be stored against the customer’s account and will be used to authenticate the details every time they call back. The bank said that the voice recognition is secure since these characteristics are specific to one person and therefore it will be difficult to emulate it. “We have noticed that the customers, especially those who use smart phones, find it difficult to enter the 16 digit card number and the 4 digit PIN with accuracy and at a reasonable speed. We wanted to offer them a secure and hands-free alternative to the traditional on-screen commands on smart phones. The voice recognition service has the potential to increase security and convenience,” said Chanda Kochhar, MD & CEO, ICICI Bank. The lender said that over 33 million of its bank and credit card customers will be able to use this service.

aviation ministry has dropped its plan to regulate airfares. The decision, which spells a relief for airlines, came after the ministry’s analysis of lowest and highest fares showed fares have come down or only marginally increased in the past few years. The ministry has decided against regulating fares even as members of Parliament and a parliamentary panel urged it to put in place a mechanism. Its analysis since January-March 2014 on six key routes showed fares have lowered or marginally increased (see chart). “We did a quarterly analysis of fares for some quarters and it shows that fares have not gone up to the extent costs for airlines have. As of now, we do not see any reasoning behind regulating fares. All airlines declare their minimum and maximum fares to the aviation regulator every month and that it is a transparent enough mechanism to check fares,” civil aviation minister Ashok

The ministry had in the past discussed ways to regulate fares. Methods discussed by the ministry included limiting the highest fare at Rs 20,000, fixing a lower and higher fare band and allowing airlines to go only 33% higher or lower from that fixed band. None of the models was either finalised or implemented. The minister, however, feels that the concern of emergency travellers can be addressed by bringing in an emergency quota of seats. “We also realised that going into floors and caps, you will push up cost for some and pull down cost for others. Fares are not regulated anywhere in the world. The problem that we have is last-minute emergencies. Is it not possible to ask the airlines to reserve some seats for emergency travellers and release the seats last minute for people travelling due to an emergency?” he said. Passengers, however, believe lower or higher fares may have come down but average

of Civil Aviation ( DGCA) does not have the expertise to monitor the economics behind fares. Rather than collating data on low/high fares, they should have asked for average fares from the airline, as the airline operates on the basis of yield management,” said D Sudhakara Reddy, president of Air Passengers Association of India. Reddy further said airlines sell a large number of tickets last minute at higher prices and hence increase their yield. “So, the fare range may not have increased but the number of tickets at higher prices has surely increased. On top of it, airlines are also increasing cancellation charges and introducing a charge for seats,” he said. Meanwhile, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), after complaints from members of Parliament and a parliamentary panel, has started an inquiry into alleged cartelisation of fares by airlines. In earlier inquiries, CCI did not find any irregularities in airfares.

The Morung Express

Morung Express News Dimapur | May 25

BJP national general secretary (North East in-charge), Ram Madhav, today claimed that the country has made an economic turnaround in the last one year of the BJP-led NDA Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mhadav said when the BJP-led NDA government came to power a year back, India’s economy was in bad shape with economists predicting a dark future for the country. But one year down the line, all economic indicators are on upswing and Modi’s “Make in India” has impacted the FDI inflow to go up by 58%, the BJP national general secretary said in his address at the “One year achievement of NDA Government” celebration programme organized by Nagaland State

BJP national general secretary, Ram Madhav (2nd right) along with Nagaland state BJP leaders and legislators addressing the media at Hotel Acacia in Dimapur on May 25.

BJP here at Hotel Acacia. Asserting that the Modi Government has accomplished more in one year than what the Congressled UPA could do in ten years, Madhav said though Congress claims itself to be “pro-poor” party, the party could come out with only two schemes (MGNREGA and Food Security Bill) in the last ten years pertaining to welfare of the poor.

MEx FILE Man accused of raping mentally challenged mother arrested Peren, May 25 (Mexn): The person accused of raping a mentally challenged mother of eight in Peren district has been arrested. Kiedai Dwaswang (55) was arrested by Peren police on May 25 around 2:30 pm from the outskirts of Ngwalwa village. A press release from superintendent of police, Peren, informed that based on newspaper report on May 19 and subsequent FIR lodged by the relatives of the victim on May 20, Peren police conducted extensive search operation for the alleged rapist. However, following his ex-communication by the village council, the accused absconded and could not be traced for few days until May 25. The accused has been booked under relevant sections of law and thorough investigation is in progress, the release added.

DC informs on compensation DiMaPur, May 25 (Mexn): All the landowners and beneficiaries of Chumukedima village affected by the construction of new BG railway line from Dhansiripar to Chumukedima village have been informed that payment of compensation for land, building, and other items will be held on May 28, 10:00 am onwards at the conference hall of deputy commissioner, Dimapur. The deputy commissioner has informed the chairman/head GB and other members of Chumukedima village council to be present physically for identification of landowners and beneficiaries during the disbursal of cheques. Failing which, payment shall be withheld, the DC said. Meanwhile, all affected landowners and beneficiaries have been directed to come in person along with identification proof, bank passbook, five copies of passport size photo etc. Payment to representative other than the person concerned will not be entertained, the DC said in a press release.

NSCN/GPRN terminates one DiMaPur, May 25 (Mexn): The MIP of NSCN/ GPRN has informed that Beduta Chakhesang (ASO) under the Ministry of Eidangitar has been terminated from national service for “indulging in extortion and anti-party activities unbecoming of a national worker” as per the order of the Cabinet office dated May 22.

On the other hand, Modi government introduced four welfare schemes for the poor including ‘Jan Dhan’ and other social security schemes in the past one year, the BJP leader said. Madhav added while the Congress party stands for “poverty alleviation”, the BJP is all out for “poverty annihilation.” Asserting that the BJP has politically reduced the

Congress party to a nonentity, Madhav said Andhra Pradesh first state in India to have a “Congress-mukt” (Congress-free) assembly, followed by Delhi and Nagaland. The BJP leader said Congress represents a political culture, the culture of corruption, which has proved to be a nemesis for the country. He further said for the Congress, minority

communities are not “people but votes.” “We (BJP) are for welfare of each and every community, we are for development which does not discriminate on the basis of caste or religion,” Madhav said. “The present NDA Government is incorruptible. Nobody can corrupt Narendra Modi. Transparency in public life is very dear to us,” he said. The BJP leader further expressed optimism that under the leadership of Modi and the “larger political unity” in the state, solution to the Naga issue can be achieved in a “time bound” manner. Nagaland State BJP president, Dr. M Chuba, delivered the welcome address and TL Merry from the NPF also spoke on the occasion. State BJP general secretary and spokesman, K James Vizo, chaired the programme.

The DUCCF has urged the NPGs not to serve any letter of taxation or pressurize the urban council chairmen to collect tax on their behalf. DUCCF said it respects the Naga National Movement and will always endeavor towards a strong, united Naga Nation. “But as

the Naga public has realized that so long as the Naga National Movement stays a divided house it’s futile to pay tax. Nagas aspirations and dreams will never be fulfilled if things continue in the present trend.” Therefore, based on the decision made at the October 31, 2013 public rally, DUCCF had since resolved not to collect any tax for the NPGs and stands firmly on the principle of ‘One Government, One Tax’, the Media Cell said. The Federation opined that various colony councils have been instituted to serve the interest of the general public, without any fear or favor. Meanwhile, DUCCF informed that all DUCCF members are members of ACAUT Nagaland.

PVSU, WTPYF condemn rape attempt Wokha, May 25 (Mexn): The Pongidong Village Students’ Union (PVSU) and Wokha Town Pongidong Youth Forum (WTPYF) have condemned the rape attempt on its member by one Renbi Yanthan at Wokha Town on May 22. The two bodies termed the act as a “nasty crime which is intolerable and unacceptable in the society.” It stated that such kind of “shameful deed” befits a harsh punishment. Acknowledging the O.C and his team for apprehending the offender in the nick of time, the organizations further appealed to the law enforcement agency to take stern action against the accused.

CAPO calls Chakhabama-Zboto road work ‘manmade disaster’ Concern expressed over misery caused by the road construction during monsoon Zunheboto, May 25 (Mexn): The Chokri Area Public Organization (CAPO) has expressed concern that come monsoon, the people in the area will undergo “harrowing torment” of “manmade disaster” brought by the construction of Chakhabama-Zunheboto road. A press release from CAPO president Vezhosa Chuzho stated that the two lanning of the road, which was expected to provide better life to the people, has turned into a nightmare. “Several plantation areas have been lost, irrigation channels washed away, perennial water sources providing irrigation to farmers have been dumped with mud, permanent terrace paddy fields have been washed away,” it pointed out. Ever since the earth cutting work started, according to the release, “haphazard and callousness were the hallmark of this road construction.” The construction was carried out in several patches without completing in a single stretch. Wherever,

earth cutting was carried out, natural water ways/ outlets were ignored and filled with mud and worst of all no drainage were constructed for the water to drain causing mudslide and heavy landslide, it added. With the recent shower, the release said, mudslide began in the recurring spots blocking entry of vehicles, which were cleared after repeated requests to the company. The CAPO president recounted that in the past, due to non clearance of mudslides, goods laden vehicles had accidents, vehicles were stranded for days together and passengers had to face untold difficulties in the middle of the jungle without food and water. These led to hike in prices of essential commodities. The release further informed that recently, in the guise of soiling, the company dug the road at Chetheba town, but even after several days, the road is yet to be filled with sand gravel. The organisation said they were told that a joint venture of Mytas and Gay-

atri with high reputation in road construction has been awarded the work. “However, our interaction with the workers reveals that they are not employees of the real company who have been awarded the work. In fact they are employees of some lesser companies who have been allotted the work.” In this, it queried, “if such subletting was to be done do we not have competent local contractors?” “We definitely have and it is up to the State Government to ensure that work is carried out according to the terms and agreement entered into.” It has been cooperating with whatever company has come to carry out the work; however, CAPO said, its “goodwill and gesture are running out if the same manmade disaster is forced upon us again” while referring to the miseries caused by the road during monsoon. If no action is taken by the company and State government this time, the CAPO cautioned that people would be forced to resort to their own course of action.

Holistic Health and Sports

T

he holistic growth of a society depends on the dynamism and vibrancy of its human resources in order for it to progress economically, culturally, socially and politically. A society’s greatest asset is its human resources, and developing them relies on a balanced approach that integrates creative, studentcentered education and physical activities. While the focus and resources are usually aimed to develop aspects of formal education, the same cannot be said about sports in the Naga context. Ironically, the lack of well-organized sports programmes invariably negatively affects student’s overall performance. Understanding the relevance of athletics and sports to formal education provides insight into why in more recent times Naga society has become quite physically unfit. Our changing lifestyle, eating habits and food preferences, combined with the lack of routine physical exercise and sports are negatively affecting Naga people’s physical health, as well as Naga society. Perhaps you have noticed that Nagaland has failed to produce quality champions in both individual and team sports. While Nagas have traditionally been known to have a natural physical aptitude that could be nurtured and developed in mastering a specific sporting discipline, the lack of sports and athletics infrastructure in schools, as well as public sports complexes, has deprived many youths of an opportunity to excel in these areas. This has resulted in both health and social consequences. With this fast changing lifestyle, society’s overall physical fitness is reflected in the quality of life and health, particularly among the youth. The present Naga situation has evolved within a long-standing political crisis which has manifested in other conditions including alcoholism, drug addiction and unemployment, as well as increased mental health diagnosis. Introducing sports and athletics programmes could be one way to address some these social issues through engaging people in more physical and team oriented activities. The need to develop sports in Nagaland is not just confined to the need to produce quality sports persons among men and women, but as a means of providing the space for young people to physically express themselves. The increasing role of media, particularly television, has raised awareness of sporting activities and the need to keep physically fit. The Nagaland State Government needs to express its genuine concern for young people’s physical and mental well-being by introducing and implementing policies that are youth-centered. Schools can be encouraged to balance academics with physical activities which can be supported by developing new government policies focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle. For instance, sports can be supported by building a sporting infrastructure that meets international standards in all districts throughout Nagaland state. Recognizing that our rapidly changing lifestyle is dramatically impacted, the overall physical and mental health condition of Nagaland state needs to be carefully examined and appropriate interventions introduced to support a healthy lifestyle. A public health policy that goes beyond the existing notion of health needs to be framed that integrates sports programmes beginning in primary school is one approach for increasing everyone’s health and well-being.

The True Friends of the Hill People What does God say? “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born out of adversity” (Prov. 17:17, CEV) The Naga Experience When some Naga representatives met Mahatma Gandhi at his Delhi’s residence on July 19, 1947, the Indian leader was very understanding and sympathetic to their right of self-determination. He told them, “The Nagas have every right to be independent. We do not want to live under the domination of the British and now they are leaving us.” Then, the Naga representatives apprised him of their intention to declare their independence on August 14. And Gandhi responded, “Why wait till 14th August? Why not today?” So, these Nagas told Gandhi of Sir Akbar Hydari’s threat of using military force, and to which Gandhi said, “Don’t you trust me? India has no right to do so. If force were to be used, then I will sacrifice my life for you and I will ask them to kill me before a Naga is shot.” While Mahatma Gandhi is considered as the founding Father of Independent India, the Nagas will forever honor him as the true friend of the hill people. Okay, so now what? Because of the Indian army’s atrocities committed against our men and women in the past, we still tend to look at every Indian with hate. But it is time we bury the “old hatchet,” otherwise hate will only eat us alive from within. A very long time ago, I decided not to look at Indians anymore through the lens of racial hate. Then, something happened: I began to discover many wonderful Indian people. Some 30 years ago, an elderly Rajasthani woman reached out to me and still treats me as her son; one Punjabi doctor regarded me as his younger brother; several South Indian families would do almost anything for me; many Marathi people have embraced me as though I am one of their own. My point is this: there are still many Indians who have the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi--friendly, peace-loving, understanding, reasonable and gracious. To build a better Naga future, we must still deal with the India people, especially the Gandhian kind. They may be educationists, scientists, engineers, architects, urban developers, industry experts, mechanists, technologists, innovators, herbal researchers, businesspersons, social workers, journalists and social activists. And hundreds of them, even just the ones I know personally, have that heartfelt desire to reach out to us. And on our part, we Nagas would do well to reciprocate and even do so as Christ would do to others. Taken from the book “Breakfast with the King: The 100-Day Devotional” by Mazie Nakhro

The dilemmas of migration and the alternatives

T

he EU has approved the use of force to combat human trafficking on the Mediterranean. Groups of Moroccan immigrants frequently try to jump the fence into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia turn away boats with thousands of people fleeing Myanmar and Bangladesh. In South Africa, foreign workers from neighbouring countries face vicious attacks. And ‘coyotes’ (traffickers) are making their fortunes illegally by passing people between Central America, Mexico and the United States. These are only a few examples of the thousands of people who prefer to die at sea or at the hands of traffickers than to live in penury, in the midst of repression or violence. Borders at sea and on land create the dramatic spaces where more people every year try to make their way to a different life. In Europe, some see the influx of foreigners as an advantage—providing a young workforce to contribute to sustaining the social security system. Others consider it a source of crime. Some believe that societies are never static and that multiculturalism is enriching, while others fear it causes a loss of identity, or increasingly link migration with jihadist terrorism. Informing these views is the powerful, sometimes hidden component of racism on the one hand, and on the other a power discourse apparently unable to do anything about immigration and the growing demands for political asylum, except to try and stop or restrict them. Hedged in by these restrictive narratives—which present no alternative other than to close down the gateways of the US, Europe, Australia and increasingly some southern countries—international conventions on asylum are sidelined, as are moral and humanitarian considerations and the economic and financial alternatives that could be implemented to strategically reduce the need for people to migrate. As with other international problems (such as climate change and organized crime), migration is a complex issue with no single, immediate solution. However, a series of economic measures together with a greater determination in resolving armed conflicts could help alleviate the causes for mass migration in the medium and long term. If a strategic approach is not adopted, the problem will grow until it becomes impossible to manage. Inequality, poverty and violence The crisis in Europe and the United States has benefited a conservative approach, as populist leaders capitalize on the fear of immigration and use it to spearhead their chauvinist narratives. In times of crisis, subjective feelings of fear are easy to spread. The anti-immigration discourse of the extreme right has gained adherents in centrist and socialist parties and among their voters, as seen in the recent elections in Britain. Meanwhile the data corroborate the correlation between poverty, inequality, war and violence, on the one hand, and migrants and asylum seekers, on the other. The number of Syrians and Palestinians grows in parallel to the lack of political solutions in their countries. Meanwhile, the disintegration of Libya—two governments, dozens of armed groups, the presence of so-called Islamic State—is increasing both the number of people who want to flee and the number of traffickers. Even without open war or repression, however, the global system with its growing reliance on robotics is a machine that increasingly puts people out of work, especially the younger generations, and results in massive inequality and depredation. Vertical and horizontal movements of people According to UNHCR, “More than 218,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean in 2014—almost three times the previous high in

hat is one of the first things new parents announce when their baby is born? 8 pounds 11 ounces. Proud parents share the birth weight of their bundles of joy, reveling in the amount of precious space junior has carved out in this world. It seems from the moment we are born, our lives are constrained by the tyranny of numbers. For as long as I can remember, I let numbers rule my life, allowing it to dictate the state of my being. As a student, I paid zealous attention to my test scores. The metric for the amount of learning held more sway over me than the actual learning. And then there’s that wretched bathroom scale, whose numbers are always higher than desired, and which held the power to determine my self esteem. These days, with social media as the staple of my brain diet, I battle obsession over the number of notifications, likes, blog views, and shares. The quality of my creativity has been so easily cheapened into a quantifiable statistic. I don’t think I’m a lone captive to numbers. If my Twitter stream is any indication, the latest Pew Research Center survey released on “America’s Changing Religious Landscape,” was enough to throw the American church into a collective frenzy, arguing over how to interpret and analyze the stats, strategizing to combat this increasing decline of the American religious. I’m grateful for organizations like Pew. I believe in due diligence and social science research. But I think we have to be careful to not give too much power to what is merely a tool, a metric, and some data — especially

Force and denial are not going to solve the migrant crisis—instead we must turn to longterm economic, political, and cultural solutions

Alternative policies Bombings will not stop migration. On the contrary, many repressive measures lead to a proliferation of illegal migration methods and the number of traffickers. Instead, though most recipient countries present the problem as almost impossible to solve, there are many alternatives to the use of force, expulsion and barriers. Europe, the United States and other recipient countries could plan the integration of these people, safely and legally, with educational, training and employment mechanisms. UN forums suggest integrating the discussions about refugees, migrants and internally displaced people into the current review of sustainable development goals, and linking it to respect for human rights and the protection of vulnerable people. The 2014 UN Secretary General report on international migration and development has many important and concrete suggestions on how to manage migration internationally. A report by the Australian Refugee Council concludes that refugees "can diversify and enhance the skill level of the population, increase economies of scale and foster innovation and flexibility.” A World Bank report concludes that refugees bring skills, boost the demand for products and services locally, and attract remittances from abroad. According to Philippe Legrain, an economic adviser to the president of the European Commission from 2011 to 2014, “Studies by the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development show that migrants tend to be net contributors to public finances. Educated abroad, they are typically young and healthy, and unlikely to be eligible for a pension if they leave again. Far from being a threat to Europe’s welfare programs, increased migration could make them more sustainable. An influx of new taxpayers would also alleviate the debt burden of the existing population.”

2011 during the 'Arab Spring'…More than 3,500 women, men and children were reported dead or missing in the Mediterranean Sea in 2014.” It is estimated that another 200,000 will attempt to cross the Mediterranean in 2015, with numbers increasing by the end of the year. Europe is alarmed by the northbound movement of people, but in the Middle East and North Africa, as in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America, the flow is horizontal. People move where they can, from centers of conflict such as the Middle East, Somalia, Nigeria, Burundi, Central African Republic, Myanmar and Mali. (In the same way, families try to protect their children from the maras or gangs in Guatemala and El Salvador by paying the coyotes to take them out of harm’s way.) Interestingly, the largest number of immigrants in the inter-European flows of people between 2010 and 2013 came from eastern Europe to southern Europe and northern and southern Europe to northern Europe, thanks to the financial crisis. Despite the increase in asylum applications in the north, most refugees live in precarious conditions close to their countries of origin. According to UNHCR, even though Syrians were the largest group seeking asylum in industrialized countries in 2014, “their number remains modest compared to the number of Syrian refugees hosted by surrounding countries. The overall number registered or await- The racism component The governments of industrialized countries, ing registration in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and and increasingly of the so-called emerging powers, Turkey had surpassed the 3.9 million mark.” are not adopting regulations in investment, trade and finance that could help diminish the number Debate over the use of force On May 11, Federica Mogherini, High Represen- of migrants. More Than Numbers: Beyond American Christianity's 'Crisis' Cindy Brandt Sojourners when what we are quantifying are human beings and the state of our faith. It is far too reductionist to claim we are no more than plotted numbers on a chart. Many of my Chinese friends prefer Chinese medicine over Western medicine. Western doctors diagnose patients by running tests and analyzing results, following precise formulas that have been proven through rigorous research to be effective. On the contrary, Chinese doctors diagnose patients by picking up their hand and feeling their pulse. Treatment isn’t based on hard data, but through human touch and allowing each unique rhythm to speak for itself. I’m not a doctor, and I will leave the validity of various diagnostic tools to medical professionals. But I see the merit in honoring the wild diversity of humanity beyond the confining data they are categorized in any sort of survey. The tools are helpful in that they help us see large trends, which when dissected, help us shape and affect human stories. But let’s always remember the human sto-

ries are what matters most in the end. So I am not criticizing the validity of the Pew Research survey, but that it should be viewed as a tool, a conduit through which we listen to the stories of the people. It’s important to listen to the stories told through the numbers as well as the untold stories. As a non-American, it is surprising to hear my brothers and sisters throw out phrases like, “the church is in decline,” when what you are referring to is the church in America. The global church is alive and well and thriving in many areas of the world, and what joy it would be to allow their voices to speak into the congregations of the global North. Many of the polarizing, divisive issues in the American church, such as gay marriage, abortion, and the death penalty, are being discussed by the global church outside the context of the binary lenses of the American left and right. These outside voices can serve to soften the rhetoric hurled by each side, and also give perspective to the priority placed on them in light of the problems

faced by the global South. It is incumbent upon the church to touch real-life human beings and feel the pulse of their heartbeats. Look into the eyes of our churched and nonchurched neighbors to hear the nuances of their church entry/exit stories. Listen to the cry of their hearts and the longings of their soul. Say, “I hear you” without an agenda, without a clipboard, without a recruitment plan. They are not boxes that have been checked, but human stories with desires, pains, dreams, sufferings, and hope. Let’s take our focus off of the numbers, because we do not serve the Lord of numbers — we serve a God of God’s Beloved. And the people of God have always been in the process of telling and retelling their story in light of present realities with an ever-present God. The people of God told and retold their story when they were exiled into Babylon. They told and retold their story when their Messiah shockingly hung on a cross. They told and retold their story when Gentiles were surprisingly incorporated into their family. The American church is changing, slowly losing majority status. The church worldwide is shifting, with the global South gaining robust growth. We are at the brink of change, and the people of God must be ready to tell and retell the story of God as we have been tasked to do. So we speak, quietly, faithfully, gracefully with our one wild and precious life: in our homes, at our workplaces, and wherever our adventures take us. The numbers matter, but the human stories behind them matter more.

t was just the two of them, brother and sister, out on the open ocean with hundreds of other desperate migrants, mostly Rohingya Muslims fleeing their homes in Myanmar. For nearly three months, the siblings comforted each other when rolling waves thrashed their boat, when their empty bellies ached and when they were beaten for trying to stand up to stretch their legs. As the oldest, Mohammad Aesop - just 10 years old - knew it was his job to keep his 8-year-old sister safe. But with the Thai crew wielding guns and threatening to throw troublemakers overboard, he felt helpless. Theirs was the first boat to wash ashore in Indonesia two weeks ago, followed by a number of other wooden trawlers crammed with hungry, dehydrated people. Many were abandoned at sea by their captains following a regional crackdown on human trafficking networks. So far, nearly 3,100 Rohingya and Bangladeshis have landed in three Southeast Asian countries, according to the International Organization for Migration. More than half of them wound up in Indonesia, where nearly 170 children who traveled alone - some after being tricked or kidnapped wait to learn what will happen next. Labeled one of the world's most persecuted minorities, the Rohingya have been fleeing predominantly Buddhist Myanmar for decades. But it was only after the country started moving from dictatorship to democracy in 2011 that the numbers really spiraled, with newfound freedoms of expression lifting the lid off deep-rooted hatred felt by many toward the ethnic Muslims. Hundreds were killed, and thousands more were placed in internment camps where they cannot work and medical care is scarce. In recent months, however, flight from the area has been triggered less by fear than by desperation and greed. Rohingya brokers, eager to fill boats with human cargo that fetch $100 each, roam villages and displacement camps touting stories of jobs waiting overseas. Bored, frustrated and naive, youngsters are the easiest to trick. Once on board the ships, they are also the most vulnerable. At the Indonesian seaside camp in Aceh province's Kuala Cangkoi where Mohammad and his sister now stay, nearly a third of the migrants are

he two great ecological challenges of our times are biodiversity erosion and climate change. And both are interconnected, in their causes and their solutions. Industrial agriculture is the biggest contributor to biodiversity erosion as well as to climate change. According to the United Nations, 93% of all plant variety has disappeared over the last 80 years. Monocultures based on chemical inputs do not merely destroy plant biodiversity, they have destroyed soil biodiversity, which leads to the emergence of pathogens, new diseases, and more chemical use. Our study of soils in the Bt cotton regions of Vidharba showed a dramatic decline in beneficial soil organisms. In many regions with intensive use of pesticides and GMOs, bees and butterflies are disappearing. There are no pollinators on Bt cotton plants, whereas the population of pollinators in Navdanya’s biodiversity conservation farm in Doon Valley is six times more than in the neighbouring forest. The UNEP has calculated the contribution of pollinators to be $200 billion annually. Industrial agriculture also kills aquatic and marine life by creating dead zones due to fertilizer run off. Pesticides are also killing or damaging aquatic life. Besides the harm to biodiversity and the climate, industrial agriculture actually undermines food and nutrition security. Firstly, industrial agriculture grows commodities for profits of the agrichemical (now also Biotech) and agribusiness corporations. Only 10 percent of the annual GMO corn and soya crop goes to feed people. The rest goes to animal feed and biofuel. This is clearly not a food system that feeds the world. Secondly, monocultures undermine nutrition by displacing the biodiversity that provides nourishment and the diversity of nutrients our body needs. Herbicides like Roundup do not just kill the milkweed on which the monarch Butterfly larvae feed, they kill sources of nutrition for humans – the amaranth, the "bathua," and the mixed cropping that produces more "Nutrition per Acre" than industrial monocultures.

children. Some of the smallest Rohingya suck on lollipops and munch on potato chips passed out by local residents and students who come to snap photos of the group. Other exhausted little ones, who went three days without food on the boat, lie face down asleep on the cool white tile of a pavilion where fish is normally hawked. "The vulnerability of these children can never be overstated," said Steve Hamilton, deputy chief of mission at the International Organization for Migration in Indonesia, adding that the government has said special care will be provided to ensure the safety of unaccompanied minors. "The hardships they have endured at such young ages are heartbreaking." Mohammad and his sister, Untas Begum, lost their mother three years ago, when sectarian violence in Myanmar's troubled state of Rakhine reached its peak. She was killed by a machete during an attack at a market in the state capital, Sittwe. Her children were taken in by a relative, who struggled to care for them with little money for food. Their father has been living in Muslim-majority Malaysia, one of the few places where Rohingya can find menial jobs and a semblance of acceptance. He decided it was time for his children to join him, and paid a broker in March to put them on a boat in the Bay of Bengal. The siblings were forced to sit with their knees bent so that another person could be seated in between their legs - like human dominos stacked together as closely as possible to ensure the biggest payoff from ransoms of around $2,000 per person demanded from the migrants' families after they left Myanmar's territorial waters. To sleep, they simply leaned back into the chest of the person behind them. When their legs shook and ached from being locked in one position for so long, they were beaten for moving or trying to stand. The heat on the boat was oppressive, and the stench of sweat and soured vomit was nauseating. They were given only a few spoonfuls of rice gruel twice a day. Fever, diarrhea and dehydration were common among the children and adults, but no medicine was provided. Untas said she once shivered while burning hot and freezing at the same time. "We were given a little food and water, and we were on the sea for a long time," she said, sipping water casually though a straw, a precious commodity that such a short time ago was rationed to keep her alive during the journey. "We didn't have our mom or

dad on the boat, so we were scared." Fear and desperation have driven smugglers to flee their vessels following recent arrests and the discovery of dozens of mass graves in Thailand and Malaysia where migrants were held in the jungle before the floating camps were set up offshore. Mohammad said one night a smaller boat approached, and as the captain and crew left, they pointed guns at the people on the larger vessel and told them that anyone who tried to follow would be killed. "He shot twice into the air. Everyone started screaming and crying," Mohammad said, adding that he threw his sister across his lap to try to shield her with his tiny body. "I thought they would kill all of us." The Associated Press spoke to numerous children in Myanmar who managed to escape their boats, along with those who made it to shore in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Some said they ended up at sea after brokers in Rakhine told them that if they left immediately without telling their parents, they could earn big money in Thailand and Malaysia and send it home to their impoverished families. People continued to be loaded even after the crisis began unfolding earlier this month, with abandoned boats being pushed back to sea like pinballs by the region's navies. Others, like Atau Rahman, 12, of Sittwe, reported being outright kidnapped. He said he and nine other boys were grabbed by a "weird man" and shoved onto a boat where they simply disappeared. They were held for weeks offshore until the boat was finally crammed full of enough bodies to leave. "I don't know what happened," he said at a camp in the Acehnese town of Langsa, where the most recent vessel landed last week. "We were put on the boat and tied up, and gags were put in our mouths so we couldn't talk." In a tent just behind him, a little girl with diarrhea lay listless on a plastic tarp with an IV drip strapped to her arm. Skinny women sat nearby on the ground nursing fussy babies, while some children with every rib showing ran naked through the grounds. Indonesian medical workers scurried to conduct basic health screenings and provide vaccinations - likely the first medical care many Rohingya kids have ever received. Meanwhile, a 3-year-old girl died from tetanus after arriving at the local hospital last week, and a few other kids were receiving treatment there. "This human tragedy was too cruel for the children to bear. I'm so sad to see their blank gaze when they describe their emotional wounds," said Rudi Purnomo, from the Indonesian nonprofit group Act for Humanity. "The condition of these children in the refugee shelters makes me hug my own kids tighter than usual and feel grateful." Denied citizenship, the 1.3 million Rohingya living in Myanmar are effectively stateless, wanted not at home nor by any other country. Governments fear that by letting in even a few poor, uneducated migrants, they will open the floodgates for many. In recent days, Indonesia and Malaysia relented, saying they would provide temporary shelter to 7,000 people - the number who have already landed combined with those believed still stranded at sea. But they did so only on condition that the international community would resettle them in third countries within a year. So far, the U.S. and the tiny African nation of Gambia are the only countries to raise their hands. Hussein Ahmed, a 12-year-old Rohingya boy, has stopped trying to imagine a future for himself. He left a camp in Sittwe by himself when a broker convinced his mother he could earn money abroad to support the family since his father was killed three years ago in the violence. After months at sea, he now feels his people may be the most unwanted on earth. "I was born in Myanmar, but they don't want me. I tried to go to Thailand or Malaysia, but I can't go anywhere because they don't want me," he said at the Langsa camp. "I was a kid back home, but now I have to be a man. I am in a different country alone. It's up to God - whatever will happen next."

Women and Biodiversity Feed the World, Not Corporations and GMOs Vandana shiva CommonDreams Having destroyed our sources of nutrition by destroying biodiversity—and creating vitamin A, iron and other deficiencies—the same companies who created the crisis are promising a miracle solution: GMOs. Genetically engineered Golden Rice and GMO Bananas are being proposed by corporations hiding behind the cloak of academia as a solution to hunger and malnutrition in the Global South. But these are false miracles.

Biodiverse ecological agriculture in women's hands is a solution not just to the malnutrition crisis, but also the climate crisis Indigenous biodiverse varieties of food grown by women provide far more nutrition than the commodities produced by industrial agriculture. Since 1985 the false miracle of Golden Rice is being offered as a solution to vitamin A deficiency. But Golden rice is still under development. Billions of dollars have been wasted on a hoax. On 20th of April, the White house gave an award to Syngenta which had tried to pirate India’s rice diversity, and owns most of the 80 patents related to Golden Rice. This is reminiscient of the Emperor who had no clothes. Golden Rice is 350% less efficient in providing vitanim A than the biodiversity alternatives that women grow. GMO ‘iron-rich’ Bananas have 3000% less

iron than turmeric and 2000% less iron than amchur (mango powder). Apart from being nutritionally empty, GMOs are part of an industrial system of agriculture that is destroying the planet, depleting our water sources, increasing green houses gases, and driving farmers into debt and suicide through a greater dependence on chemical inputs. Moreover, these corporate-led industrial monocultures are destroying biodiversity, and we are losing access to the food systems that have sustained us throughout time. Biodiverse ecological agriculture in women’s hands is a solution not just to the malnutrition crisis, but also the climate crisis. Women have been the primary growers of food and nutrition throughout history, but today, food is being taken out of our hands and substituted for toxic commodities controlled by global corporations. Monoculture industrial farming has taken the quality, taste and nutrition out of our food. In addition to destroying biodiversity, industrial agriculture is the biggest contributor of greenhouse gases (GHGs) which are leading to climate change and climate chaos. As I have written in my book, Soil Not Oil: Environmental Justice in an Age of Climate Crisis, 40% of all GHGs—including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and methane—come from industrialised globalized agriculture. And chemical monocultures are also more vulnerable to climate change as we have witnessed in the unseasonal rains at harvest time in 2015. On the other hand, organic farming reduces emissions, and also makes agriculture more resilient to climate change. Because organic farming is based on returning organic matter to the soil, it is the

most effective means to remove excess carbon in the air, where it does not belong, and putting it in the soil, where it belongs. Navdanya’s research has shown that organic farming has increased carbon absorption by 55%. International studies show that with 2 tons of Soil Organic Matter (SOM) per hectare, we can remove 10 gigatons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which can reduce the atmospheric concentration of carbon back down to preindustrial levels of 350 ppm. In addition, organic matter in the soil also increases water-holding capacity of the soil, reducing the impact of floods and droughts. Just 1% increase in Soil Organic Matter can raise the water-holding capacity of soil by 100,000 liters per hectare. And an increase of 5% can raise it to 800,000 liters. This is our insurance against climate change, both when there is drought and too little rain, and when there are floods and excess rain. On the other hand, cement and concrete increases runoff of water, aggravating floods and drought. We witnessed this in the Uttarakhand disaster in 2013 and in the Kashmir disaster in 2014. At harvest time of spring 2015 India had unseasonal rains which destroyed the crops. More than a 100 farmers committed suicide. The unseasonal rains due to climate instability added to the burden of debt the farmers are already carrying due to rising costs of production and falling prices. Both the crisis of debt leading to climate change and the climate crisis have a common solution – a shift to biodiverse ecological agriculture which is free of high cost chemical inputs and dependence on corporate seeds, hence of debt, and also has climate resilience built into it through biodiversity and organic soils. 4000 years ago our ancient Vedas had guided us, "Upon this handful of soil our survival depends. Care for it, and it will grow our food, our fuel, our shelter and surround us with beauty. Abuse it, and the soil will collapse and die, taking humanity with it." “My voice on the educational system in Nagaland” I feel like an experiment being tested by our Educational Board. Before I put my thoughts to words, this is for your atention that I do not mean to go against any systems, neither do I expect an answer to any queries that I put forward. This is just a feeling being expressed by a student about the educational system under which she was brought up. Inatoli K. Jimo

uring my high shoool days, we (the students) were under the constant change of systems which very often made our jaws drop in wonder. After every two or three years, I hear my father who is a teacher in Government High School say that a new educational system is being introduced for the students in the state. As I grew up, I began to realize the turn of events in the educational system which made me think that, I and every other student of my batch are being used as an experiment to test the new system that had been introduced recently. With the promotion of class I get every year, it became more and more evident that there is no one straight line for the Educational board in our state. Instead the Nagaland educational system has many options that we are almost like the gypsies always on the move. The board is always in search of a better system of education in the state, that they almost forget about the condition and experience of the thousands of students currently studying (or being experimented) under the system. Sad to say this, but yet again, I still feel like an experiment even in my undergraduate level. I feel like an unwanted child in this new semester system of which I am of the first batch. I wonder if there are any strong foundations on which the Universiity has built this Semester system. I have very strong reasons to say this because of all the experiences I had as a student. (I feel more like a victim) under this new system when we first started we were highlighted about the system, and also told that our answer papers for the fourth and the sixth semester exams would be sent to the University for evaluation. Fourth semester came, it was about time for the end exams when we were told that our papers will be evaluated in the College itself, as the University was not ready to do it. It gave us mixed feelings about the University’s this and that. It was both a blessing and a curse, as we were happy on one hand that our lecturers would be correcting our papers, while on the other, we were furious at the University for not being prepared for the odds while introducing new systems. What I learned later on was that, it was just the beginning of the malfunctioning of the system. The most annoying part of all was the experience that we, the English Honours students had to go through in the fifth semester. We were informed by the college authorities when we were about to fill up our forms for the end semester exams, that we had to drop one of the general subjects i.e., History, Sociology, Political Science or Economics, as it was too much for the English Honours. When we ( me and some of my friends) approached the authority to say that we were okay and that we do not want to drop any of the subjects, we were also told that it was the rule of the university, and that we have no option but to drop one of the subjects. We were dejected, but without any alternative we had to drop one subject which we had been studying for the previous four semesters and even till that moment. By the time we filled up the exam forms, the internal assessments for the entire semester was already taken, and we have also prepared a bit, if not so well of the subject which we have left too. As such we were infuriated by the systems which we cannot even go against because by then, the damage had already been done. One big question I still have on my mind is, ‘Why did they make me study a subject for the entire semester if they were going to let me drop it just before the exams?’. I wasted plenty of time preparing for tests and writing assignments and doing researches on that subject instead of focusing more on the other subjects just because I did not know that it would be useless. Thankfully, my life as an experiment is finally over after exhausting tedious years. I am now only praying that the University will not treat me like an experiment if I happen to join the Nagaland University for my masters. Pardon me, if I have said anything wrong. It is my wish that any educational board or university should have a well planned system before introducing anything new to the students. Or else, a little loophole in the system might make students like me feel like we’re being used as an experiment, especially when one is of the first batch, which is always more or less introduced to test the new system. Shalom.

‘Achche din' not for those who looted nation: Modi Zero to Modi govt on job creation: Chidambaram

People take vantage positions as they listen to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a rally at the birth place of Denndayal Upadhyay, one of the main ideologists of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), on the eve of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s first anniversary at Nagla Chandrabhan, on Monday, May 25. Modi completes one year in office on Tuesday. (AP Photo)

Mathura, May 25 (iaNS): Asserting that his government has delivered the promised "achche din" (good days) to the people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that the promise was not for those who looted the nation. "Achche din (good days) came for many, but for many bure din (bad days) have come... I did not guarantee achche din for those who looted the

nation for years," Modi said while launching the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) mega campaign to mark the NDA government's one year in power. "Are the bad days over or not?" Modi asked people. He added that during the UPA rule there were scams and corruption and cited the coal and 2G scams among others. "The country was in a bad shape. You tell me

whether the situation has changed or not? It is you who is responsible for the change, not Modi," he said. He said that now no union minister was in the news for corruption charges, while earlier "every day there were scams, remote controls ran the government, officers were jailed, leaders were jailed and coal was stolen". "I have stopped power brokers from having a say.

New Delhi, May 25 (pti): Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram today gave zero marks to the Modi government on the issue of job creation, faulted it for not carrying out major reforms despite adequate numbers in the Lok Sabha and spoke of worrying signs in the economy. The senior Congress leader also took a jibe at Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, saying tax terrorism coined by him has "come to haunt him" now in the backdrop of tax notices to FIIs regarding Minimum Alternate Tax. Seeking to puncture the celebratory mood of the Narendra Modi dispensation over completing one year in office, Chidambaram suggested that the tenure so far was a missed opportunity as it failed to carry out reforms despite the ruling BJP securing majority on its own. He warned that investors will not come if growth in credit and demand do not pick up and private projects remained stalled. Taking a dig, he said "but if you will ask a big industalist who was promised Rs 5,000 crore from State Bank of India, he will of course give 10 out of 10". These power circles are history now, there is no place for such people." The rally was organised in Chandrabhan village near Mathura. Modi also said that the government was dedicated to increasing urea production to 20 lakh tonnes. "We have decided that in the next five years, rivers will be interlinked and water harvesting will be done. We will ensure that farmers get adequate water and

electricity in the next five years. The amount of electricity that we have generated in one year had not been achieved in the past 30 years," he added. "In the past 60 years more than 3 lakh farmers have committed suicide. We do not want to do politics on it. The farmer knows how to work hard. We have decided to give a soil health card to every farmer over the next three years," said Modi.

More than 500 people killed as heat wave bakes parts of India New Delhi, May 25 (thoMSoN reuterS FouNDatioN): Soaring temperatures have gripped parts of southern and northern India in an extreme heat wave which has killed more than 500 people and looks set to continue this week, officials said on Monday. The hottest place in India was Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, which saw mercury rise to 47.7ºC on Sunday, while the capital Delhi recorded a high of 43.5ºC. Most of the 539 recorded deaths have been of construction workers, the elderly or the homeless in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, said officials, but some deaths have also

occurred in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red warning to affected regions saying that the heat wave conditions are likely to continue over coming days. Director of Andhra Pradesh's Disaster Management Department K. Dhananjaya Reddy said 325 people had died of sunstroke or dehydration in the state in the last three days. "We are advising people not to go to work between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.," said Reddy. "We have also opened centres in different places specially in urban areas for the distribution of water and butter milk."

The government has cancelled the leave of all doctors as hospitals were being flooded with cases of heat-stroke, he said, adding that compensation of 100,000 rupees will be given to families of people who had died. In the neighbouring state of Telangana, 204 people have died. Taxi drivers in Kolkata capital of West Bengal state where four deaths have been reported - refused to work between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. after two cabbies died in their cars last week. The monsoon, predicted to hit southern India’s coastline on May 31, will bring some relief from the high temperatures, said weather officials.

3 killed, 2 injured in Kashmir attacks SriNagar, May 25 (iaNS): A soldier and a man were killed in two separate terror attacks in Kashmir on Monday. A guerrilla was also killed in a fierce gun battle with the security forces. The first attack took place on a shop that sold BSNL SIM cards in north Kashmir's Sopore town, and hours later, rebels opened fire at a Rashtriya Rifles patrol in Kulgam district. The morning shooting in Sopore town, about 50 km south of Srinagar, left three people critically injured. Muhammad Rafiq Bhat, a resident of Sogipora in Kupwara, later died from his injuries at a hospital. Just hours later, a Rashtriya Rifles patrol was ambushed by guerrillas in Kanjikulla Kokergund (Yaripora) area of Kulgam district. Soldier Dharam Ram of the Rashtriya Rifles was critically injured in

the attack, and died later at a hospital, a police officer said. In the fierce exchange that erupted as security forces pinned down the militants, a separatist guerrilla was killed, police said. 3 soldiers killed in LoC Meanwhile 4 people, including 3 soldiers, were killed in a gunfight between security forces and infiltrators on Monday along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district. The gunfight was continuing late in the evening, a senior police officer told IANS adding 1 infiltrator also got killed during the gunfight. "The exchange of fire is still on in the area (as of 8 p.m.) and the army has cordoned off the surrounding forest area there," said the officer.

2 dead, over 100 injured as Muri Express derails in UP Girls pip boys in CBSE Class 12 results lucKNow, May 25 (iaNS): At least two people were killed and over 100 injured after eight coaches of the Ranchi-Jammu Tawi Muri Express derailed in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district on Monday afternoon, officials said. The accident occurred between the Sirathu and Athsarai railway stations in the Allahabad-Kanpur sector of the rail zone, 173 km from here. The toll is feared to go up, said officials.

Three general sleeper coaches - S5, S6, S7 - and three air-conditioned coaches - three-tier B1 and B2 and two-tier A1 along with the pantry car derailed while one coach capsized and fell in a ditch nearby, a district official told IANS. Local villagers rushed to the rescue even before officials of the district administration reached the spot. The state government has announced

a compensation of Rs.2 lakh each to the families of those who died. The office of the chief secretary said that Kaushambi and health department officials have been asked to ensure prompt relief and rescue operations. Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan is personally monitoring the situation, said a home department official. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who is in France on a four-day visit,

has been apprised of the accident. The North-Central Railways (NCR) has meanwhile set up a helpline 1072 - where people after prefixing the local STD code can enquire about the passengers travelling on the train. A relief train along with a crane and cutters has also been rushed to the spot while senior railway officials were also at the spot, said railway PRO Anil Saxena.

McMahon Line illegal: China responds to Ajit Doval BeijiNg, May 25 (pti): Sticking to its stand that McMahon Line on India-China boundary is "illegal", China Monday said it is ready to work with India to resolve the vexed border issue at an early date through "friendly consultations" to create more favourable conditions for bilateral ties. "The Chinese side holds a consistent and clear position on the eastern section of the China-India boundary," foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said, reaffirming Beijing's claims on Arunachal Pradesh, which it says is a part of 'Southern Tibet'."The Chinese government does not recognise 'the McMahon

Line', which is illegal," she said, reacting to national security advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval's remarks made at the KF Rustamji lecture in New Delhi recently. "The Chinese side is ready to work with the Indian side to resolve the boundary question through friendly consultation at an early date and create more favourable conditions for the development of the bilateral relations," she said in a written response to a PTI query. In his address on May 22, Doval said settlement of the border issue is "critical" for India-China ties and called for a "larger plan" for "tack-

ling" the issue to resolve all contentious matters. Doval, also the special representative of Sino-India boundary talks, said while ties with China are looking up, "we are particularly concerned about the Eastern sector where the claims have been made on Tawang (in Arunachal Pradesh) which is totally in contravention of accepted principles". The line that was agreed to by Britain and Tibet as part of the 1914 Simla Accord is named after Sir Henry McMahon, foreign secretary of the British-run government of India and the chief negotiator of settling disputes with China.

Are reverse osmosis filter systems a threat to public health? KolKata, May 25 (iaNS): The reverse-osmosis water purifier at home seems to be a benign invention, allowing people to drink clean, healthy water. But now scientists are warning that rampant use of the RO technology could pose a serious threat to public health. One of the most popular water purifying technologies in India, the RO process is efficient in terms of filtering out toxic substances like arsenic and fluoride, especially in areas where groundwater is heavily contaminated. Simultaneously, though, RO systems, at both household and industrial levels plough back concentrated amounts of these substances back into the aquifers. Experts suggest that regulations are needed to stop the unchecked use of RO, or at least the disposal of the stuff left behind after filtering. "What we found with our survey is that industrial firms, like bottled-water ones, and households have no way out but to put it back into the soil and aquifers," said Saradindu Bhaduri, Assistant Professor, Centre for Studies in Science Policy, School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The arsenic and fluoride-laden waste water generated by RO systems could have "adverse consequences" for human and animal health after it is dumped back into the groundwater aquifers, he told IANS. This could affect the population in the surrounding area which is dependent on this

water source. "The waste water contains high amount of total dissolved salts like sulphates, calcium, bicarbonates and organic matter and higher concentration of arsenic and fluoride in areas where originally these elements were reported in ground water," co-author of the study, Aviram Sharma of the JNU, said. Published on April 25 in Current Science, the survey report titled 'Growth of water purification technologies in the era of regulatory vacuum in India' also questions the absence of proper methods to dispose of the contaminated waste water. The research shows that bottled water firms of all sizes and classes, ranging from major multinationals to the vast majority of India's 2,700 small proprietory firms, use RO-based water purification technologies in their manufacturing plants. The USP of RO-based system is that it can produce higher amount of filtered water with less supervision in comparison to methods like ion-exchange, explained Sharma. However, there is a drawback. During industrial use, waste water amounts to between 30 and 40% of the total water used. At the household level too there is a huge wastage. This can have a "disastrous impact" in water-starved areas due to over extraction of ground water, which is a major source of fresh water in most of the regions in India, said Sharma.

New Delhi, May 25 (iaNS): Girls once again performed better than boys in the CBSE Class 12 results announced here on Monday. Delhi girl M. Gayatri topped the examination with 99.2 percent marks. The second spot was shared by a Noida girl student, a boy from Delhi and another from Kerala who all scored just a mark less than the overall topper. The overall pass percentage of girls this year stands at 87.56 percent, while it is 77.77 percent for boys. "You can see the difference (between the pass percentage of girls and boys) is more than 9.79 percent. So, as usual, girls have outscored boys this year as well," said Rama Sharma, public relations officer, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). "There were 10.4 lakh candidates who appeared in the exam this year, which was 1.2 percent more than the past year. The pass percentage of 2015 is 82 percent, which is marginally lower than that of last year which was

82.70 percent," she added. Overall, the CBSE's Thiruvananthapuram region recorded the highest pass percentage of 95.41, followed by Chennai with a pass percentage of 91.14 percent. Chennai's pass percentage last year was 91.63 percent. Delhi stood third with an overall pass percentage of 86.13 percent. Delhi's pass percentage for boys was 81.59 percent and 90.87 percent for girls. Of the 2,66,661 registered students in Delhi, 2,63,361 students appeared for the

exam, of whom 2,26,838 passed. Gayatri, a commerce student of New Green Field School in Delhi's Saket area, emerged the topper. The second spot was shared by Noida student Mythili Mishra, B. Arjun from Pattom in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and Saurabh Bhambri, a student from Delhi's Greater Kailash area. All three of them scored 99 percent - 495 out of the total 500 marks. Last year, the city recorded an overall pass per-

centage of 86.78 percent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated "all my young friends who have successfully passed the CBSE Class 12 board exam". The per for mance of Delhi's government schools was the best in the country among all government schools as 88.22 percent of their students cleared the exams. However, Delhi's figure was 88.78 percent in 2014. Delhi was followed by Ajmer region where the government schools had a pass percentage of 86.11 percent, compared to 86.63 percent last year. The students suffered some anxious moments earlier in the day when the CBSE website crashed for about an hour due to heavy traffic. The results were declared at noon and were available at www.results. nic.in, www.cbseresults. nic.in and www.cbse.nic. in. Of the three sites, www. cbse.nic.in and www.results.nic.in crashed following the declaration of results.

How goats, chicken have lifted households out of poverty New Delhi, May 25 (iaNS/ iNDiaSpeND): Some interventions in day-to-day living have led to a 15 percent increase in assets, 26 percent growth in consumption and 96 percent rise in savings among the ultra-poor, or those with no assets, in India, according to a new six-country study that followed the lives of 21,000 of the world's poorest people. Examples: A chicken, goat or a similar productive assets or Goods (such as betel leaves and vegetables) for a small shop. Training on using such assets. Money to reduce incentives to sell assets in an emergency. Frequent personal mentoring or coaching. Health education. Savings services for between 18 and 24 months. These interventions follow what is called the "graduation model", a programme that endeavours to help the poorest people upward and out of poverty, and could have seminal implications for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, as it attempts to move from costlier, broad subsidies to clearly-targeted interventions. Apart from India, the graduation model was tested in Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, Pakistan and Peru by researchers from the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

(MIT) in Boston, US. “The programme’s approach differs from that of micro-credit or self-help groups as households are not required to repay the asset cost. Further, the training and intensive hand-holding helps beneficiaries fully benefit from their chosen selfemployment activities,” according to economist Abhijit Banerjee, J-PAL founder, and one of the researchers. In India, it has meant a 433 percent return on investment The J-PAL research in India was carried out in West Bengal by Bandhan-Konnagar, the not-forprofit arm of Bandhan Financial Services and offered a 433 percent return on investment. “We gave [a] stipend for a year and provided support for 18-24 months. The per beneficiary cost worked out to Rs 20,000-25,000, with 70 percent spent on the asset and stipend, 10 percent on training and 20 percent on managing and monitoring the project for two years,” said Shekhar Ghosh, chairman of Bandhan Financial Services. Those in the programme group had significantly more assets and savings, spent more time working, went hungry on fewer days and experienced lower levels of stress and improved physical health, said Ghosh. Across the six countries, re-

searchers tracked 10,495 households to test the graduation approach. Researchers used a “randomised controlled-trial methodology”, in which they tracked people invited to participate in the two-year programme and a similar group that was not, and compared how their lives changed up to a year after the programme ended. The researchers found that the beneficiaries, after the third year, had significantly more assets and savings, spent more time working, went hungry on fewer days and experienced lower levels of stress and improved physical health. Vast anti-poverty apparatus have given a miss to India’s excluded people The country has almost 216 million people, or 43 million households, with no assets, as IndiaSpend has reported. Of those with zero assets, nearly 80 million people-the population of Germany-or 16 million households are Adivasis. The government runs various social-security programmes. Some are employment-led, such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which promises 100 days of work per person annually, and the National Rural Livelihoods

Mission (NRLM) which trains rural youth to be self-employed. Others, such as the food-security mission, promise rice and wheat at subsidised prices and offer support in kind and cash, such as old-age pensions. There has been a 125% rise in funding, from Rs.47,014 crore in 2013-14 to Rs.1,06,115 crore in 2015-16. This vast anti-poverty apparatus-one of the world’s most extensive-barely addresses the needs of the asset-less class of Indians. Schemes like the NRLM are struggling in areas with a significant rural population because self-help groups were not being formed or could not be formed. Spending on trainers, healthcare similar to job funding The J-PAL study found that the money spent over two years on each beneficiary-including spending on trainers and healthcare-was around Rs 20,000; roughly what the government would spend if the beneficiaries received 58 days of employment a year. The study results prompted NGO partner Bandhan to scale-up the programme to 32,280 families in six states: West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Assam, Tripura and Madhya Pradesh. The programme is also being scaled up in 20 other countries.

Malaysia: Human traffickers’ camps had 139 graves WANG KELIAN, MAy 25 (AP): Malaysian authorities said Monday a cluster of abandoned jungle camps used by human traffickers contained 139 suspected graves as well as barbed-wire pens likely used to cage migrants, shedding more light on a regional trade that preyed on some of Southeast Asia’s most desperate people. National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said forensics experts were exhuming the suspected graves found at 28 vacated camps in the hilly jungle area on the border with Thailand where trafficking syndicates were known to operate. “It is a very sad scene,” Khalid told reporters at a police outpost in the town of Wang Kelian several kilometers (miles) from the camps, one of which appeared large enough to hold about 300 people. “I am shocked. We never expected this kind of cruelty.” At one forest camp, police found several parts of a decomposed body inside a wooden pen. The parts were placed into white bags and brought to Wang Kelian, and district police chief Rizani Ismail said they would be examined by forensics experts. Po-

lice said they would begin digging up other suspected graves — mounds of earth, covered with leaves and marked by sticks — on

Tuesday. “We have discovered 139 of what we believe to be graves,” Khalid said. “We believe they are victims of

human trafficking.” Prime Minister Najib Razak, in Tokyo on an official visit, vowed to find the perpetrators. “I am deeply

concerned with graves found on Malaysian soil purportedly connected to people smuggling. We will find those responsible,” he

said on Twitter early Monday. The finding in the northern Malaysian state of Perlis follows a similar discovery earlier this month by police in Thailand who unearthed dozens of bodies from shallow graves on the Thai side of the border. The discoveries have exposed hidden networks of jungle camps run by human smugglers, who have for years held countless desperate people captive while extorting ransoms from their families. Most of those who have fallen victim to the trafficking networks are members of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya Muslim community or impoverished migrants from Bangladesh, part of a wave of people who have fled their homelands to reach countries like Malaysia, where they hope to find work or live freely. As Southeast Asian governments have launched crackdowns in recent weeks amid intensified international pressure and media scrutiny, traffickers have abandoned camps on land and boats at sea to avoid arrest. Khalid said at least two of the camps found in Malaysia appeared to have been abandoned within

the past few weeks, based on the condition of items left behind such as vegetables, rice and almost new cooking utensils. Scattered personal possessions included a pink teddy bear and white children’s sandals, he said, indicating the possible presence of children at the camp. On three large whiteboards, police pasted dozens of pictures taken at the camps, which ranged in size, with the largest capable of holding about 300 people and smaller ones just a few dozen. Some of the pictures showed large, crudely built pens made from wooden sticks and barbed wire that were believed to be used as cages. “We think the migrants were imprisoned in these wooden pens,” Khalid said. “They were not allowed to move freely and traffickers kept watch at sentry posts.” Other items left behind included a rifle pouch, used bullets and bullet casings, he said. Police also found white muslin cloth, used by Muslims in Malaysia to wrap dead bodies, and a wooden stretcher believed to have carried bodies. The findings were the result of an operation Malaysian authorities conducted from May 11-23,

during which they combed the steep jungle area along 50 kilometers (30 miles) of the border with Thailand. Due to the difficult terrain, Khalid said the investigation and forensics analysis could take a few weeks. Human rights groups and activists say the area on the Thai-Malaysia border has been used for years to smuggle migrants and refugees, including Rohingya Muslims, a longpersecuted minority in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar. In many cases, they pay human smugglers thousands of dollars for passage, but are instead held for weeks or months, while traffickers extort more money from their families back home. Rights groups say some have been beaten to death, and The Associated Press has documented other cases in which people have been enslaved on fishing boats. Since May 10 alone, more than 3,600 people — about half of them from Bangladesh and half Rohingya from Myanmar — have landed ashore in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Thousands more are believed to be trapped at sea in boats abandoned by their captains.

Donor fatigue hits Nepal one UK PM Cameron outlines who Former Israeli Premier Olmert month after mega earthquake: UN can vote in referendum on EU sentenced to 8 months in prison NEW DELHI, MAy 25 (THOMsON REuTERs FOuNDATION): The international community’s response to devastating earthquakes in Nepal has been disappointing, a United Nations official said on Monday, adding that donors were focusing more on reconstruction than much needed aid such as food and shelter. The impoverished Himalayan nation is reeling from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck on April 25. A second quake of 7.3 magnitude struck on May 12. Over 8,600 people have died. “I am disappointed in the sense that there was such an impressive response in terms of search and rescue - all the teams that came in to do the work, they did very impressively and comprehensively - and maybe they think that’s the job done,” said Jamie McGoldrick, U.N. resident coordinator in Nepal. “The talk now is about reconstruction, but we are trying to remind people that in

between search and rescue and recovery, there is a phase called relief and we can’t forget that,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone from Kathmandu. In the weeks following the earthquake, scores of international agencies and foreign governments rushed to send search and rescue teams, doctors and relief materials to the country which is sandwiched between India and China. The U.N. appealed for $423 million to be able to provide up to two million survivors with basic relief such as tents or tarpaulin sheets, dry food rations, safe drinking water and toilets for the next three months. As of Monday, the U.N. Financial Tracking System showed $92.4 million has been raised, 22 percent of the required funds. McGoldrick said the slow response was partly due to donor fatigue where governments were being torn between competing humanitarian crises across the world such as the civil con-

flict in Syria or in Yemen. Nepal’s traditional donors were also more “development” focused and were likely holding back funds for long-term reconstruction and recovery projects, he added. But he warned that there was only a small window of opportunity to buy and get relief supplies delivered to survivors in remote mountain hamlets ahead of the annual monsoons which run from June to September. The heavy rains in areas which were already damaged by the earthquakes would “complicate relief efforts all the more” as they would trigger more landslides and block roads, hampering the delivery of aid by trucks, he said. “It only gives us a limited window to get the much needed supplies to the very remote areas, where some people have been very badly affected by the earthquakes,” said McGoldrick. “We have to make sure that there is enough materials - shelter, blankets, food, water and sanitation.”

LONDON, MAy 25 (AP): Britain’s prime minister on Monday outlined who will be allowed to vote in a referendum on whether or not the country should remain in the European Union, opting to exclude most voters from the 28-nation bloc who live in the U.K. The question is important because so many non-British EU citizens live in Britain — nearly 2.8 million. Some have argued that they have a right to vote on something so material to their future. Prime Minister David Cameron announced the parameters ahead of introducing legislation Thursday in Parliament to organize the ballot. No date has been set for it yet but Cameron is committed to holding the referendum by 2017. His plans also include a tour of European capitals to press his case that the EU needs to be reformed, hoping that the upcoming vote in Britain will convince those on the continent that Britain is determined to enact change. Cameron plans to travel to Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Poland and Germany this week as part of his efforts to talk with all of the leaders of the EU member states before the June European Council late next month. Under the referendum measure, the vote will be open to those allowed to normally vote in British elections — rather than rules that are used for European Parliament elections. The rules would exclude, for example, a French citizen working in London but not qualifying Commonwealth citizens and Republic of Ireland citizens who are eligible to vote if registered. U.K. citizens living abroad for less than 15 years will also be able to vote. There would be exceptions, most notably in regard to Gibraltar, a British territory. Situated at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar resolutely wishes to remain separate from Spain, although public opinion there has been staunchly pro-EU. The chief minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, praised Cameron for being “true to his word” on giving the territory’s residents a chance to vote in the referendum on EU membership.

JERusALEM, MAy 25 (AP): Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was sentenced Monday to eight months in prison for unlawfully accepting money from a U.S. supporter, capping the dramatic downfall of a man who only years earlier led the country and hoped to bring about a historic peace agreement with the Palestinians. Olmert was convicted in March in a retrial in Jerusalem District Court. The sentencing comes in addition to a sixyear prison sentence he received last year in a separate bribery conviction, ensuring the end of the former premier’s political career. Olmert’s lawyer, Eyal Rozovsky, said Olmert’s legal team was “very disappointed” by the ruling and would appeal to Israel’s Supreme Court. They were granted a 45-day stay, meaning the former Israeli leader will avoid incarceration for now. Olmert also was given a suspended sentence of an additional eight months and fined $25,000. A slew of character witnesses had vouched for Olmert, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former Israeli Mossad chief Meir Dagan in written statements read aloud Monday. The verdict stated that it recognized Olmert’s vast contributions to Israeli society and sentenced him

John Nash: A life of great struggle and even greater success

In this March 24, 2002 file photo, John Nash, left, and his wife Alicia, arrive at the 74th annual Academy Awards, in Los Angeles. (AP File Photo)

TRENTON, MAy 25 (AP): Born to an electrical engineer, and later a precocious and dashing young man who attained an Ivy League education, John Nash seemed destined for a life of stunning success. That he achieved, winning a Nobel Prize in 1994, but not without a struggle with mental illness that would make him a household name even more so than his achievements in mathematics. Nash had read the classic “Men of Mathematics” by E.T. Bell by the time he was in high school. He planned to follow in his father’s footsteps and studied for three years at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh — now Carnegie Mellon University — but instead followed his passion for math. He then went to Princeton, where he worked on his equilibrium theory and, in 1950, received his doctorate with a dissertation on non-cooperative games. The thesis contained the definition and properties of what would later be called the Nash equilibrium. But it was while teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959, when his wife, Alicia,

was pregnant with their son, that schizophrenia began to emerge, a yearslong fight that was chronicled in the Academy Award-winning blockbuster “A Beautiful Mind.” The Nashes died in a car accident late Saturday on the New Jersey Turnpike. He was 86; she was 82. “John’s remarkable achievements inspired generations of mathematicians, economists and scientists who were influenced by his brilliant, groundbreaking work in game theory, and the story of his life with Alicia moved millions of readers and moviegoers who marveled at their courage in the face of daunting challenges,” Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber said in a statement. In an autobiography written for The Nobel Foundation website, Nash said delusions caused him to resign as a faculty member at MIT. He also spent several months in New Jersey hospitals on an involuntary basis. However, Nash’s schizophrenia diminished through the 1970s and 1980s as he “gradually began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of think-

ing,” he wrote. 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind” was based on an unauthorized biography by Sylvia Nasar, who wrote that Nash’s contemporaries found him “immensely strange” and “slightly cold, a bit superior, somewhat secretive.” Much of his demeanor likely stemmed from mental illness. “A Beautiful Mind” won four Academy Awards, including best picture and best director, and generated interest in John Nash’s life story. Russell Crowe, who was nominated for best actor for playing Nash, tweeted that he was “stunned” by news of the couple’s death. “An amazing partnership,” he wrote. “Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts.” Jennifer Connelly, who won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Alicia Nash, called the couple “an inspiration,” and the film’s director, Ron Howard, tweeted that “it was an honor telling part of their story.” The Nashes split in 1963 then resumed living together several years later and finally remarried in 2001. John Nash held a re-

search post at Brandeis University before eventually returning to Princeton. Known as brilliant and eccentric, he was associated with Princeton for many years, most recently serving as a senior research mathematician. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for his work in game theory, which offered insight into the dynamics of human rivalry. It is considered one of the most influential ideas of the 20th century. Just days before his death, Nash received a prize from the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters in Oslo with New York University mathematician Louis Nirenberg, who called Nash a truly great mathematician and “a kind of genius.” Nirenberg said he had chatted with the Nashes for an hour at the airport in Newark, New Jersey before they’d gotten into a taxi to return home to Princeton Township. New Jersey State Police say the Nashes were thrown out of the taxi when it crashed around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Monroe Township, about 12 miles from their home. The cab driver was hospitalized.

to less than the prosecution had demanded. Still, it ruled that “a black flag hovers over his conduct.” Olmert was forced to resign in early 2009 amid the corruption allegations. His departure cleared the way for hardliner Benjamin Netanyahu’s election, and subsequent Mideast peace efforts have not succeeded. Olmert, 69, was acquitted in 2012 of a series of charges that included accepting cash-stuffed envelopes from U.S. businessman Morris Talansky when Olmert was mayor of Jerusalem and a Cabinet minister. Olmert was found to have received about $600,000 from Talansky during his term as mayor, and additional amounts in cash during his term as a Cabinet minister, but a court did not find evidence the money had been used for unlawful personal reasons or illegal campaign financing. Talansky, an Orthodox Jew from New York’s Long Island, had testified the money was spent on expensive cigars, first-class travel and luxury hotels, while insisting he received nothing in return. The acquittal on the most serious charges at the time was seen as a major victory for Olmert, who denied being corrupt. He was convicted only on a lesser charge of breach of trust for steering job appointments and contracts to clients of a business partner.

The Morung Express 10 SPORTS insists Saina set to defend Verstappen Grosjean to blame for LeBron's triple-double helps Australian Open title Monaco GP crash Cavs top Hawks in thriller Dimapur

SYDNEY, MAY 25 (iANS): Star Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal is all set to defend her women's singles title when she takes to the court at the $750,000 Australian Open Superseries, which commences here on Tuesday. World No.1 Saina has been seeded No.2. and had defeated Spaniard Carolina Marin -- who later won the World Championships -- to lift the trophy last year. This time she will open her campaign against a yet to be decided qualifier.

MONACO, MAY 25 (AP): Teenage driver Max Verstappen is making a name for himself in his first Formula One season for Toro Rosso with aggressive driving and a love of overtaking. However, the 17-year-old's performance at Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix will be remembered for a late crash as he tried to squeeze past French driver Romain Grosjean. It led to a safety car coming out when Lewis Hamilton was well in the lead. Hamilton finished third after his team miscalculated by calling him to the pits for a tire change and he came back out behind Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg, who won. Although it looked like a reckless overtaking attempt from Verstappen, he insists Grosjean made a mistake by braking at the wrong moment. "I braked in the same spot like the lap before but he clearly (broke) 10-15 meters earlier. When it is that close, you have no room," Verstappen said. "He caught me by surprise. By then it is too late because you don't expect someone to brake that early." Grosjean, who has angered some drivers in the past with risky overtaking moves of his own, clearly blamed Verstappen and said "that was stupid" over his race radio moments after the crash. He finished the race in 12th place, and out of the points. Verstappen, the son of Dutch F1 driver Jos Verstappen who competed in over 100 GPs, was unharmed as he climbed out of his car. Saina and Sindhu are in two different halves of the draw and a possible clash can only happen if both make it to the finals. In men's singles action, World No.4 Kidambi Srikanth has been seeded fourth and will start his campaign against Danish Hans-Kristian Vittinghus while compatriot and reigning Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap has also been given a tough opener against Chinese sixth seed Wang Zhengming in the draw of 32. In men's doubles, Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar will take on Cai Yun and Kang Jun while Commonwealth Games champions Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will face Dutch pair Samantha Barning and Iris Tabeling in women's doubles. Chopra and Ponnappa will join hands in the mixed doubles qualifiers, so will R.M.V. Gurusaidutt to try and find a spot in the men's singles main draw.

Pakistan pip Zimbabwe to clinch T20 series 2-0

LAHORE, MAY 25 (REUTERS): Pakistan edged Zimbabwe by two wickets in the second and final Twenty20 International on Sunday to clinch the series 2-0 at a boisterous Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Needing 12 runs of the last over, number 10 batsman Bilawal Bhatti clobbered a six, ran for two and hit a four to seal a victory with two balls to spare and clinch the series that marked international cricket's return to the country. Zimbabwe had earlier posted a strong 175-3 after Vusi Sibanda (49) and Hamilton Masakadza (39) gave them a strong start and Sean Williams scored

an unbeaten 58 off 32 balls. Mukhtar Ahmed topscored for Pakistan with 62, while Umar Akmal contributed 30 but it was Bhatti's unbeaten 13 off five balls which hauled Pakistan over the line. "What gives me maximum joy is that both the matches went without any issues and the Zimbabwe team also enjoyed a lot," Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said at the presentation ceremony. "I also want to thank the crowd, who once again demonstrated how keen they are to witness (international) cricket here." MANCHESTER, MAY 25 (AP): Manchester United sent Radamel Falcao back to Monaco on Sunday after a disappointing season-long loan in which the Colombia international failed to show the predatory instincts that once made him one of the world's top strikers. United announced the club would not be exercising the option to sign the 29-year-old Falcao on a permanent deal, which would have cost 43.2 million pounds ($67 million) for a player who scored just four goals in 29 matches this season. "Falcao is a top professional and a good human being," United manager Louis van Gaal. "On behalf

of myself and everyone at the club I would like to wish him well for the future." United paid around 6 million pounds (then $9 million) to Monaco on deadline day in Europe's summer transfer window last year to take Falcao on loan for the season, with an option to buy. However, Falcao hasn't managed to reproduce the kind of form that made him stand out during prolific spells with Porto and Atletico Madrid. He doesn't appear to have recovered fully from the serious knee injury that ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and robbed him of his explosive pace and movement.

Colombia's all-time top scorer scored for United in his fourth game — a 2-1 win over Everton — but only netted three more times since October, and not in his last 13 matches. Falcao was left out of United's squad for the final game of the season, at Hull on Sunday, through injury, according to Van Gaal. His last match was the 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Old Trafford last weekend. The departure of Falcao leaves United short of options up front, especially with doubts surrounding the future of striker Robin van Persie. Falcao joined Monaco from Atletico in 2013 in a deal worth 60 million euros (then $78 million).

5 ODIs and 3 T20s in India

KOLKATA, MAY 25 (AgENCiES): Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Nagpur will host the four-Test matches against South Africa when the Proteas tour the country in October and November. The BCCI Tour Programme and Fixtures Committee, which met on Sunday, allocated the venues for the international matches. According to a BCCI media release, South Africa will be playing four Tests, five ODIs and three T20 Internationals while Sri Lanka play three T20 Internationals in India. With the ICC World T20 slated to be held next year, the BCCI

has taken pains to schedule six T20 Internationals. The five ODI venues for the South Africa matches will be Chennai, Kanpur, Rajkot and Mumbai with either Indore or Gwalior hosting one match. The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) will take a call on it at a later stage. The three T20 Internationals against South Africa will be held at Kolkata, Mohali and Dharamsala. The three T20 Internationals against Sri Lanka will be held in Pune, Visakhapatnam and Delhi. "The table does not indicate the sequence in which the matches will be played.

The detailed schedule with the exact dates will be announced later," BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur was quoted as saying in the media release. Contract system for women The BCCI's women's cricket committee, who also met on Sunday proposed, among other things, a contract system for women cricketers. "On the lines of men's cricket, a contract system for international women cricketers was proposed. It was also proposed to have more international fixtures for the Indian women's cricket team," said Thakur.

Hull relegated, Newcastle survives on final day of season

LONDON, MAY 25 (AP): Hull was relegated and Newcastle ensured its survival as the Premier League season ended with a series of farewells on Sunday. The final relegation place was the main matter to be determined, with Hull joining Queens Park Rangers and Burnley in the second tier in August after being held 0-0 by Manchester United. It prolonged Hull manager Steve Bruce's forlorn record against United, having never won as a coach against the club he captained. Just two months ago, when Bruce signed a season-long contract extension, the northeast club was five points clear of relegation zone. "I've not been good enough," Bruce said. "I'll reflect on that and have a conversation with the powers that be." Newcastle's 10-match winless run ended at the perfect time with a 2-0 victory over West Ham. Jonas Gutierrez, who was playing

his final game for the club after recovering from testicular cancer, and Moussa Sissoko scored to leave the club four points and three places clear of danger. "We shouldn't be in the position we were in, but we were and we dealt with it," Newcastle manager John Carver said. "We have to invest and hopefully we will." Whether Carver remains in charge of the team is unclear. Within minutes of the final whistle, it was Sam Allardyce's long-anticipated departure from West Ham that was announced. "I knew it was coming, I had no problem," Allardyce said. "I have done everything that was asked of me, got them into the Premier League and stayed there comfortably over the last three seasons." Another manager's future appears uncertain after a season on the slide ended with a final humiliation for Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool: a 6-1 loss at Stoke. "If the owners want

me to go, then I go," Rodgers said. "But I still feel I've got a lot to offer the club." The only consolation for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was scoring before heading to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Frank Lampard also signed off with a goal for deposed champion

Manchester City in a 2-0 victory over Southampton before jetting to the United States to play for sister club New York City FC. Lampard's former Chelsea teammate, Didier Drogba, ended his second spell at Stamford Bridge by lifting the Premier League

trophy for the fourth time. The 37-year-old was carried by his teammates to the touchline before a staged flamboyant substitution 28 minutes into a 3-1 victory over Sunderland. Drogba's replacement, Diego Costa, equalized from the penalty spot before Loic

Remy netted twice ahead of the trophy celebrations. Costa ended his first season in England with 20 goals, the third-highest in the Premier League. Topscorer Sergio Aguero contributed his 26th goal for Manchester City on Sunday when Harry Kane took

his tally to 21 in his breakthrough season for Tottenham. Kane ensured Tottenham clinched fifth place and a spot in the Europa League group stage with a 1-0 win over Everton. It sent Liverpool tumbling to sixth, a year after being runnerup, and Rodgers' side will have to start in the Europa League in the playoffs. Arsenal has gone 11 years without winning the title but secured automatic passage to the Champions League group stage by finishing third ahead of Manchester United. Theo Walcott scored a hat trick as the holders prepared for the FA Cup final by beating West Bromwich Albion 4-1. Fellow cup finalist Aston Villa lost 1-0 to relegated Burnley and finished only a place above the drop zone. Danny Ings scored his 11th and perhaps final goal of the season for Burnley, with a Premier League club likely to be the striker's next destination. Leicester celebrated its

survival by compounding the misery of Queens Park Rangers with a 5-1 victory over the London club. Leicester's stunning revival was perhaps only equaled by Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace. A superb six months since quitting Newcastle for south London was capped by Pardew with a 1-0 win over Swansea — a 10th win in 18 league games for him. Pardew quit Newcastle because of the financial constraints that angered fans. The season ended with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley bowing to public pressure and finally speaking in public after seven fractious years at the northeast club. "The club is on a very sound financial footing, so we are able to spend and punch above our weight with the financial situation the club finds itself in," Ashley told Sky Sports television. "I shan't be selling the club until we win something. Not at any price."

The recent earthquakes have raised fears that tourists will be driven away from Nepal, a poor country where many people depend on tourism for their livelihood.

Chris Brown 'in child support battle with his daughter Royalty's mother Nia Guzman'

A

fter giving his daughter, Royalty, a taste of the showbiz life when he took her to the Billboard Music Awards last weekend, Chris Brown is reportedly locked in a legal battle over child support. According to TMZ, 26-year-old Loyal singer Chris stopped paying former fling Nia Guzman their initially agreed figure of $2,5000 a month for their 11-month-old daughter's upkeep back in March. The website reports that the star decided to cut off the cash supply after Texas-based former model Nia requested that the payments be increased six-fold to $15,000 a month. As such, TMZ claims that plans are afoot for a legal team to file documents demanding the new sum, in addition to missed payments. MailOnline has contacted Chris Brown's representatives

for comment on the report. In March, Chris' on-off four-year relationship with Karrueche Tran came to an abrupt end after it was revealed he had fathered a child with Nia while they were together. Upon finding out he was a father, the star reportedly tried to persuade Nia to move from Texas to Los Angeles so he could be a more frequent part of his little girl's life. Chris, ex-boyfriend of Rihanna, has since appeared to embrace fatherhood, sharing a steady stream of snapshots of the adorable tot on his social media pages. He also gave her a taste of the red carpet life when he took her to May 17's Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. Alba revealed that one of the biggest bumps was being taken seriously as a businesswoman, saying that people usually thought of someone in her position as more of a spokesperson, someone that would sell beauty products. She noted that most of her advisers in entertainment thought she should do a perfume or something like that, but she ignored them and pushed on with her idea, eventually meeting entrepreneur Brian Lee with whom she partnered to launch The Honest Company. The reason why she went into business was really to create a safer and healthier world for her children and for all children, Alba said.

ussian tennis pro Maria Sharapova has never been short of male fans, but there's only one man she cares about. Maria, 28, and Grigor Dimitrov, 23, have been inseparable since they started dating in 2012 and now in an interview with the Financial Times, she reveals what makes their relationship work. The former No.1 player, with five Grand Slam titles, says that a shared understanding of the game and life on the tennis circuit is key to their romantic success. Maria, who as well playing pro tennis since she was a teenager also runs her own confectionery and lifestyle company called Sugarpova, revealed that she and Grigor's shared understanding of the game is what makes the relationship so strong. Bulgarian-born Grigor is ranked as the world's number 11 seed. Maria, who hopes to triumph at Wimbledon this summer, told the FT: 'It's nice to have someone who really understands and respects [what I do] and knows the drill.' Much like former tennis pros Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, who have now been married for 14 years, Maria and Bulgarianborn Grigor met on the tennis tour circuit and have dated since 2012 She continued: 'There are so many little variants in an athlete's career that are not always easy to explain to the outside world. 'So it is nice that they are aware of it and know it.'

Maria, who was born in Western Siberia, has previously spoken about how she and Grigor often have to grab time together between busy tennis schedules, as and when they can. 'We really don't have that much time during the tournament because our schedules are quite different and sometimes we end up playing the matches on different days. 'But it's always nice to catch up at the end of a day, that's usually when we have our time.' Maria, whose talent was spotted by Martina Navratilova in Moscow when she was just six, has been one of the highest paid female sports stars since first winning Wimbledon in 2004, aged just 17. Meanwhile, Grigor has been touted as men's tennis's next big thing. The pair are both committed to their demanding careers, with Maria having recently won another tournament in Rome, and currently preparing to defend her French Open title. She has also become a successful model, appearing in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, as well as ads for Tag Heuer, Evian, Porsche, Nike, Prince, Canon and fashion line Cole Haan. Her business acumen has also seen her top Forbes' ranking of the highest-paid female athletes every year for the last decade. But asked if she can ever beat her on court nemesis Serena Williams, she replies: 'Absolutely.'

PTI Photo An elated Mumbai Indians' mentor Sachin Tendulkar said that staying together in adverse situation has been key ingredient to their franchise's success in the Indian Premier League cricket tournament. "It was great fun to be in company of each other. We stepped together, worked hard, executed our plans. It was also on how we stayed together during tough times," the legend told former Australian opener Matthew Hayden during a snap interview. "It was excellent start given by Lendl (Simmons) and Rohit," said Tendulkar. To a fun query if he contemplated making a comeback in IPL, Tendulkar said an emphatic "No" but also dropped a hint that his and Shane Warne's brainchild Legends T20 matches in the US is taking shape. "There are a few thoughts here and there and one might see us playing a few matches," Tendulkar said. He took the opportunity to thank his millions of fans across the globe. KolKata, May 25 (IaNS): Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coach Stephen Fleming lauded the efforts of Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) final here, saying the opponents were “faultless”. Mumbai Indians beat CSK by 41 runs on Sunday night to clinch their second IPL trophy at the Eden Gardens after their triumph in 2013 at the same venue. “They played really well, they were excellent. We wanted to bowl first; it was new pitch and it had grass. We watched some games that Kolkata (Knight Riders) played on and we thought we might get some

assistance. We started well but then we got loose," said Fleming. "Rohit Sharma in such good form and Lendl Simmons got into great momentum and we were just not good enough to stop them. Their game from the second over on was faultless and we stuttered. It was similar to the last 5-6 games we have played, we weren’t at our best and were just trying to hang on, but it was not good enough.” Rohit and Simmons put up a 119-run partnership for the second wicket. The New Zealander said if given another chance, CSK would have batted first. "In hindsight, yes, we would

have batted. But everything suggested we should bowl because it was a fresh wicket with good amount of grass on it. What we did not expect was inconsistency,” he said. “This ground is renowned for chasing, KKR do it all the time. They played a very smart game and we were always under the scoreboard pressure. We were often playing the catch-up game and that can make conditions worse. It was more pressure than anything else.” Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to field came as a jolt to many experts, but Fleming defended him, saying it was a

collective decision. “We misread the pitch as a team. It is not science, it suggested it would be quite fresh. But it doesn’t win or lose you the game in Twenty20. The way they played won them the game, they got the total on the board and then we did not bat as well as we would have liked to because of the scoreboard pressure,” said the 42-year-old. Speaking on winning just two of the six IPL finals that CSK has featured in, Fleming said, "It’s not jinxed. We won the Champions League. It’s just on the day and it’s very tough to win when two good sides go at it. We have

Berdych breezes past Japanese qualifier at French Open

PaRIS, May 25 (aP): Getting past his first round opponent at the French Open was easy. Breaking the Big Four domination will be a lot harder for Tomas Berdych. In an era dominated by Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray, winning a major might sometimes look beyond reach. But the big-hitting Czech is not giving up hope. A runner-up at Wimbledon in 2010, Berdych also made it to the semifinals at theFrench Open that year. The Czech is playing at Roland Garros for the 12th consecutive time and has reasons to believe he can match his best result in the French capital. After hiring Andy Murray's former coach Dani Vallverdu, Berdych has been in consistent form this year, reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open and finishing runner-up in Doha, Rotterdam and, more recently, at the Monte Carlo Masters. But he wants more. Berdych, who came to prominence when he won the Paris Masters in 2005, has been a permanent member of the Top 10 over the past five years. He has however failed to achieve what Stan Wawrinka did at the Australian Open last year, when he became the first man from outside the Big Four to win a major since 2009, before Marin Cilic won the US Open. Against a player looking for a first ever win on clay at a big tournament, Berdych certainly took them. He used his powerful groundstrokes to overwhelm Nishioka from the start and broke for a 2-0 lead. After that he never looked back, saved all three break points he faced and hit a total of 32 winners. The Japanese teenager offered a better resistance in the second set but his lack of experience was flagrant in the 12th game when Berdych applied more pressure with a series of good returns and broke with a backhand down the line that Nishioka returned wide. Another break in the third set was enough for Berdych to improve his record on the Parisian clay to 18-11. On a cool and breezy day, the hot-tempered Fabio Fognini kept his cool as the 28th-seeded Italian dispatched another Japanese player, Tatsuma Ito, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. No. 11 Feliciano Lopez of Spain became the highest seeded man to tumble so far, losing 6-3, 7-6 (9), 6-3 to 74th-ranked Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia. Radek Stepanek, the oldest man in the draw at 36, progressed with a four-set win over Ivan Dodig while the youngest man to compete bowed out in straight sets. Making his debut at a Grand Slam tournament, 17-yearold Frances Tiafoe lost 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to 36th-ranked Martin Klizan of Slovakia. On women's play, former world No. 2 number and 2012 Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska lost in the first round for the first time since her 2007 debut at the clay-court Grand Slam, bowing out 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 against Annika Beck. Eighth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro continued her good run of form, advancing to the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Monica Niculescu. The Spaniard, who was runner-up to Maria Sharapova in Rome, could face the Russian defending champion in the quarterfinals. Also, 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber routed Timea Babos 6-0, 6-1, former French Openfinalist Samantha Stosur defeated Madison Brengle 6-1, 6-3 while local favorite and No. 29 seed Alize Cornet rallied past Roberta Vinci 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The 26th-seeded Stosur is returning to form after reuniting last month with former coach David Taylor. After winning only eight matches in 2015, she decided last week to play in Strasbourg, where she claimed her first title this year.

been beaten by some great individual performances. We have been below par for one, but the team has got us this far so we are proud." Fleming said the loss of Brendon McCullum among others also resulted in CSK's downfall. “We lost McCul-

lum and a couple of key players so were staring down the barrel a little bit while they were on a high. We have been hanging on for the couple of weeks hoping more than looking for a good performance," said the former left-handed batsman.
