DAN says CM should become an MLA

C M Y K

DIMAPUR, MAY 26 (MExN): The Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) today appealed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct the by-election for the 10 Northern Angami-1 A/C at the earliest. During a meeting of the DAN Legislature party, including independent MLAs in Kohima today, the DAN acknowledged those MLAs who had “volunteered” to vacate their seats for the Chief Minister, and in particular former MLA Kriehu Liezietsu who vacated his seat. The DAN legislators endorsed the view that the CM should become a member of the NLA and work together as a “solid team to facilitate the same.” Meanwhile, the DAN further reiterated its position to “pave the way in the event of an honourable and amicable settlement arrived at as a result of the ongoing political talks.” It urged the centre to expedite the political dialogue and bring an early solution before the Assembly elections in 2018.

art as a medium of change, Lasuh brought up the aspect of objectivity and presenting the truth. Equating the arts, in her case – documentary film-making, to a “pursuit of truth,” she said that a film can be packaged in myriad different ways, while adding, “It may have humour, may have an artistic touch… at the core of it is the truth that people can relate to.” Her graduation film at Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland titled ‘Children of Silence’ focussed on the Oinam incident of 1997 and the subsequent military retaliation. She said that she opted to tell the Oinam story over the more famous Battle of Kohima. This, she did at the advice of her teacher at Edinburgh College, who exposed to her the importance of telling an untold story. Sesino Yhoshu emphasized how motion picture can narrate a story and leave a lasting impression on the viewer. Her film, ‘The Pangti Story’ tracks the story of how an entire Naga

village got sensitized to the idea of wildlife conservation; in her words, “The transition of a village from hunters to protectors…” to changing the concept of wildlife as a source of food to that of being protected. Yhoshu, after completing her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and Video Production from St. Anthony’s college, Shillong, specialised in Electronic Cinematography from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). She also went on to study Masters in Documentary by Practice from Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. Her filmic interest lies in Video Portraiture. Her film ‘Apfütsa’, a video portrait reflecting on the time and space of her grandfather, was screened at the National Portrait Gallery, London, Bang Short Film Festival, Nottingham, University of Rochester, New York and Rubin Museum of Art, New York. NFHRCC urge CM to make good on April 27 assurances Morung Express News Dimapur | May 26

The Nagaland Foothill Road Project, work for which started in December 2013, has hit another financial barricade. Earth cutting works remain stalled in two sections of the over 300 km long proposed road that will connect Dimapur with Tizit in Mon without crossing into Assam. Only around 8 km (3 km in Naginimora and 5 km in Niuland sectors) is left to complete the earth cutting works. The amount required comes to around Rs. 11.5 cr but the funding has stopped halting work and stalling the entire project. The Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) on May 26 urged the Nagaland state government to “seriously and expeditiously” revive the works considering the proposed road’s economic impact on the state. The NFHRCC stated that the Chief Minister is still to make good on an assurance given earlier on April 27. On that date, it stated that the NFHRCC members apprised the CM on the nature of the project and appealed for sanctioning fund to complete the earth cutting works. At the meeting, the NFHRCC said that the CM while expressing the “inability to provide fund also assured to consult his Cabinet (on the matter) and to intimate the NFHRCC.” Maintaining that no timeframe was given by the CM, it stated that till date there has been no intimation from the CM or if at all he has met the Cabinet. While reiterating the CM’s April 27 assurance, the NFHRCC asked the CM to discuss the matter with the cabinet “if he has not.” The NFHRCC said that fund amounting to Rs. 70 cr has already been pumped into the project. “However, for the last 3 consecutive years, the people’s project has been ignored by the state government.” While it urged state legislators to “discuss and debate the issue” on the floor of the Assembly “as it belongs to the whole Naga family,” it appealed Naga organisations to approach the NFHRCC in the event of any misunderstanding with regard to the project.

Rio’s educational qualification AASU draws attention to students’ grievances GST Bill to be passed in special NLA session case: Court reserves judgement Morung Express News Dimapur | May 26

Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dimapur on Friday reserved its judgement on the case of the educational qualification of former State Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio. The CJM reserved judgment after the hearing from the counsels on the issue of limitation period. Speaking to media persons after the hearing, Counsel for Rio, Vitsorel Lcho said that they (Rio side) have appealed the court to drop the charges against him as the complaint was filed after the limitation period. “If any such complaint is to be filed then it has to be done within a year starting from

the date of alleged offence committed,” Lcho said and added that the complaint in the present case was filed after a delay of two years. It was on this technical ground that the Counsel for Rio appealed the Court to dismiss the case. The Counsel said there was not much argument on the merit of the case since the Police complaint against Rio was not relevant. “The educational certificate was not forged and it was a bonafide mistake committed by the institution and the MP (Rio) had mistakenly used it with no criminal intention,” he added. Further, he informed that the Court had clubbed the FIR and complaint filed by individuals since the allegations were same.

DIMAPUR, MAY 26 (MExN): The Aboi Area Students’ Union (AASU) today drew attention to the accommodation problem being faced by students at the Government Higher Secondary School, Aboi after they pass their 10th standard. “Along with those who pass from the government high school in Aboi as well as surrounding areas, we have a member of students coming from private schools vying for admission to class 11,” the AASU stated in a press note. It pointed out that Aboi having the only higher secondary school in the vicinity, the question of accommodating hundreds of students comes into play. “The statistics this year can speak for itself- so far the figure stands at 190 (one hundred ninety) admitted

in class 11. However, there are a considerable number of students who are still seeking admission,” it added. The AASU informed that the problem being faced by the school authorities is the lack of space to accommodate these students. The current building that houses the higher secondary section is actually the high school building which was constructed a few years back, while the high school was shifted to the boy’s hostel a few hundred meters away. The current building houses five class rooms, two staff rooms and a store room. The class rooms can hardly accommodate above fifty students maximum at the time but currently sits seventy students in a class. Moreover, the AASU said that the class rooms in use

face a lot of leakage during rainy season. There is also a huge shortage of benches and desks. It asked the concerned authority to look into the grievances of the school and do the needful necessary improvements at the earliest. The AASU meanwhile lauded the teachers and staff of the school for their service ever since the high school was upgraded. It may be noted that despite hardship, they have been providing the best possible service which has produced exceptional and commendable result in the last few years. Even this year the school produced 85% pass percentage with 6 students in 1st Div, 17 Students in 2nd Div and 6 in 3rd Div. Two students even passed with distinction in Education and Pol. Science subjects.

Nagaland State Chief Minister, Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu today said that the Goods and Service Tax (GST) Bill will be taken up for consideration and passing in the special session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on May 27 in Kohima. Speaking at the workshop on GST here at Banquet Hall, he said the GST regime is definitely going to be a milestone for making the tax administration in the state more effective and transparent, thereby having a beneficial effect on the consumers and the economy as a whole. “We also expect that the tax collection in the state would see a rise in the GST regime,” he said. However, he stated that in the event of loss of revenue, “we would be compensated change can be brought in for the shortfall in collecsociety. He lamented that tion by the central governthere are many maladies ment for the next five years in the Naga society today which cannot be solved by force but through discussion in such conferences and through the blessings of God. He said that only Christians can bring a positive change through their belief in truth and nonviolence. Jamir meanwhile expressed hope that the participating theologians would deliberate on the theme of the conference and go back to their respective churches and propagate the importance of living a life of integrity without any compromise on corruption. Around 700 Ao theologians are participat180 ing in the three day conference which will conclude on Sunday, May 28. ‘We need integrity in public, govt & church life’ Morung Express News Longmisa | May 26

The 31st Triennial Conference of the Ao Theological Association (ATA) began today at Longmisa Baptist Church on the theme ‘Integrity in public life.’ The theme was elucidated by the Editor of Tir Yimyim, K Temjen Jamir on Friday, who said that integrity is required not only in public life or government but in the church as well. While exhorting the Ao theologians gathered, Jamir pointed to the sad scenario of present Naga society by citing incidents that he has personally observed, where a parent was asking a minister for some money for constructing the cemetery of a deceased son and another parent asking a minister for some money for their children’s admission. Terming such incidents of people asking for money from the ministers as a ‘shameful’, yet Jamir observed that “while look-

ing from another angle, such shameful incidents happen because of lack of integrity on the part of the government or politicians” and their inability to provide proper healthcare and proper government schools and colleges. He maintained that if the government, public leaders or officials could provide proper healthcare or proper government educational institutions, then ‘those parents’ would not have to beg for money to construct a cemetery for a deceased

son since proper healthcare could have cured him; or those parents would not have to beg for money for children’s admission, since the government educational institutions would provide free education. In this connection, he said that the theme ‘integrity in public life’ is very apt, looking at the present Naga context where corruption is quite rampant. However, he asserted that integrity is also needed in the church. He pointed to the beautiful church buildings but not so

beautiful houses of the public near the churches; and said that while the ‘church’ is very rich, church members are not rich. Who knows, some of the churches might be asking the government for funds for construction of their churches etc, he said. In this connection, Jamir claimed that while churches outside Nagaland do not accept funds from unknown sources, churches in Nagaland find it very hard to deny such funds. Therefore, he called for integrity in the church so that a positive

Chief Secretary, Pankaj Kumar said the GST is to be implemented with effect from July 1, 2017. The final step in legislative process for implementation of GST in Nagaland is the passing and enactment of the Nagaland Goods and Services Tax Bill 2017. The GST Bill was approved by the cabinet yesterday. The purpose of the workshop is to familiarize legislators with the important features of GST system and the Nagaland Goods and Services Tax Bill 2017. Earlier, a presentation on GST was made by Asangba Chuba Ao, Commissioner of Taxes, Nagaland while Finance Commissioner, Abhijit Sinha proposed the vote of thanks.

JSUN to resume bandh

The arts – motion picture, theatre or music - transcend barriers irrespective of language, geographical or cultural distinctions, and can be instrumental in inspiring, provoking and invoking action for social change. With that in mind, the 9th Morung Lecture held on May 26 at the DABA’s Elim Hall focussed on bringing the arts to the fore and how it can impact social change. Three independent film-makers - Tiakumzuk Aier, the man behind Dreamz Unlimited; Sophy Lasuh and Sesino Yhoshu, the women behind the making of the award-winning ‘The Pangti Story’ and ‘The Story of a House – helmed the lecture. The three recounted their experiences, their creative pursuits and how it relates to the audience it has exposed itself to. “Story-telling is perhaps one of the oldest forms of art,” said Sophy Lasuh, while drawing a parallel between the oral tradition of telling stories and films. After a two-year stint with Indian Television, Sophy Lasuh went back to college and completed her Masters in Film & Television from Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland, 2009. Her first short film with Sesino Yhoshu “The Story of a House” has been screened at various film festivals. It won a Best Director Award in the short film category at the North East Film Festival (2016). She currently runs a Production House and is working on a documentary, ‘Rone’. Underscoring the impact of

er works include ‘The Imaginary Line’, ‘The Story of a House’ and ‘The Pangti Story’. Dreamz Unlimited with its humourous and sometimes brazenly sardonic takes on the prevailing Naga societal mind-set is today a household name in Nagaland. Tiakumzuk recalled the birth of Dreamz Unlimited following a workshop conducted by the National School of Drama. With no formal film-making background, Aier said that the early years were dominated by ‘Proscenium style’ stage production “with artistic touch.” He and his team’s exposure to theatre outside the state proved to be a learning curve, imbibing ideas and eventually Dreamz Unlimited in its present avatar. “For us, we make comedy, try to make people happy and at the same time put in a message or two,” he said. This simple approach imbibing contemporary Naga nuances and paradoxes with comic relief certainly rang a chord with the audience. While the works of Dreamz Unlimited has resonated, he added that the biggest challenge early on was the opposition to his choice of profession – the viability of theatre in a place like Nagaland. Dr. Aküm Longchari, Editor, The Morung Express, in his concluding remarks termed artists as “our conscious keepers and dream catchers”, and said that by acknowledging and unveiling the truth, the question or process of change will begin. Having said that he added that there is also the challenge of beginning “a new imagination without disconnecting from past memories.”

Besides the Chief Minister and Governor, several other dignitaries were present at the Dibrugarh airport to receive the Prime Minister. Soon after his arrival, Modi left for Dhola to inaugurate the river bridge. After inaugurating the bridge, Modi was scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute at Gogamukh. From Gogamukh, Modi will head to Guwahati, where at the Sarusojai stadium in Changsari he will inaugurate the All India Institute of Medical Sciences project in Tezpur through remote. Later in the afternoon, Modi will attend a public rally in Guwahati celebrating the successful completion of three years of the NDA government at the Centre and one year of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in the state.

Dibrugarh, May 26 (iaNS): Inaugurating the longest 9.15 km bridge over a river in Assam here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made a veiled attack on the previous Congress-led UPA government, accusing it of delaying its construction even as he named the bridge after legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika. The Dhola-Sadiya bridge over river Lohit, a tributary of river Brahmaputra -- constructed at a cost of Rs 950 crore that will connect Assam with eastern Arunachal Pradesh. The bridge will save travel of 165 km and time of six hours. The event marked completion of three years of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. He said the bridge would contribute to the development of the northeastern region. "This bridge will bring about a new economic revolution," the Prime Minister said. He also said the government was working to make the region a hub of economic activity. "This region can play a huge role in connecting India to Southeast Asia," Modi said. Approval for the bridge was given by the Union Cabinet in 2009

under the UPA government. Its construction began in 2011, under the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government in Assam. The bridge cuts the distance between Rupai on NH-37 in Assam to Meka or Roing on NH-52 in Arunachal Pradesh by 165 km, limiting the travel time to just one hour. Union Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, in his address earlier, said that development of the northeast region was the top priority of the BJP-led NDA government. "This bridge will boost tourism in the region and give employment to the people here. This bridge will also help boost the economic development of the region," he said. "We are committed to the development of the northeast. We are connecting different areas of the region with roads and waterways. We will soon start setting up floating terminals at 15 identified places on Brahmaputra river," he said. Gadkari announced that they would be starting three more big bridge projects in different parts of the northeast. "We have also started various road and highway projects with estimated cost of Rs 40,000 to 50,000 crore," he said.

missing with two pilots onboard has been found in the thick forest around 60 km from Tezpur, Assam, where it lost radar contact with the base," an official statement said. The statement said ground parties were to be airlifted to the crash site as the area is totally inaccessible. Search for the flight data recorder and missing crew will be pursued by the ground parties after they reach the crash site, it said. Search parties of the Army are also attempting to reach the crash site by trekking to the site, however their progress was

hampered due to inclement weather, thick vegetation and steep gradient of the terrain. The Su-30 had taken off from the IAF Tezpur air base, located about 172 km from the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh around 10.30 a.m. on a routine training mission on May 23. It lost radar and radio contact with the controlling station around 11.10 a.m. near Arunachal Pradesh's Doulasang area, adjoining China, 60 km north of Tezpur. Tezpur has one of the three IAF air bases in the country that host the Suk-

hois. Search and rescue operations were launched to locate the aircraft and the pilots. Help from civil administration and military authorities was also sought to locate the aircraft. Aerial search was commenced based on the last known position of the Su-30. A court of Inquiry has been ordered to probe the cause of the accident, IAF said. Last year, a Sukhoi30MKI crashed near Nagaon town of Assam during a routine sortie. While the two pilots ejected safely, some locals suffered splinter injuries in the crash.

Thirteen yrs after quitting, Zuckerberg gets honorary doctorate from Harvard washiNgtoN, May 26 (aFP): Thirteen years after dropping out of Harvard University to work on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday finally got his degree -- well, sort of. Zuckerberg returned to the university where he launched what would become the world’s biggest social network, and basked in the spotlight by receiving an honorary doctor of laws degree and addressing the 2017 commencement. His speech capped a nostalgic visit for the 33-year-old billionaire, which included a visit to his old dorm room. “Mom, I always told you I’d come back and get my degree,” read the caption of a picture he posted of him posing with his honorary diploma and his parents. Facebook -- now one of the biggest tech firms, with

nearly two billion members worldwide -- grew out of a website he created on campus. He left Harvard in May 2004, according to his Face-

book profile. In his address, which he said he’d been working on “for a long time,” Zuckerberg urged graduates of his alma mater to “build great things.”

He highlighted themes of equality, inclusiveness and opportunity, while urging students to be unafraid to take chances. “I’m here to tell you that

finding your purpose isn’t enough,” he told the rainsoaked crowd in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “Our challenge is to create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose.” Zuckerberg said he is from the same generation as the new graduates, and that the so-called Millennials will be facing a challenge of inequality, disillusionment and a loss of jobs to automation. “It’s our generation’s turn to build great things,” he said. “Let’s do big things .. not just to create progress but to create purpose.” - ‘New social contract’ Zuckerberg said opportunity is hindered by “a level of wealth inequality that hurts everyone” and that this is one of the social problems that need to be addressed.

Financial overhaul that shook the nation

“Right now our society is way overindexed on rewarding people who are successful,” he said. “There is something wrong with our system when I can leave here and make billions of dollars in 10 years while millions of students can’t even afford to pay off their loans, let alone start a business.” Zuckerberg said this generation needs to find creative solutions to social problems. “We should explore ideas like universal basic income to make sure everyone has a cushion to try new ideas,” he said. “Now it’s time for our generation to define a new social contract. We should have a society that measures progress not just by economic metrics like GDP but by how many of us have a role we find meaningful.”

MuMbai, May 26 (DNa): Narendra Modi came to power with the promise of economic revival, development, and new opportunities. In the three years since, the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Finance have worked in tandem to overhaul an inchoate tax system while going after black money and modernising the informal economy. From the fight against black money to demonetization, from a strategy for bad loans to reforms like GST, the Finance Ministry has become the hub for carrying out many of PM Modi’s promises. But India’s biggest tax reform in a very long time is undeniably the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, which is being readied for a nationwide rollout on July 1 this year aims to simplify the tax code across states. As part of its subsidy streamlining mission, the government has also paid over Rs 1 lakh crore to beneficiaries of various social schemes under the Direct Benefit Transfer. It has also done away with plan and non-plan expenditure. Most important, it has commenced a crackdown on bad loans, which have plagued both the banking and corporate sectors for long.

New Delhi, May 26 (ReuteRs): Indian shares hit record highs on Friday, with Reliance Industries and Tata Steel Ltd leading the gains, as higher derivatives rollover led to strong follow-up buying in index heavyweights. The broader NSE Nifty rose as much as 0.65% to a record high of 9,572.25, while the benchmark BSE Sensex gained as much as 0.73%, also touching a lifehigh of 30,975.52. “Most of the movement on the indexes since Thursday is due to broad index-level buying in the markets because of the F&O expiry,” said Tirthankar Patnaik, chief strategist and head of research, India at Mizuho Bank. “On Thursday, major shorts were covered and longs have been rolled, so there is follow-up buying in today’s session. Nifty saw 75% rollover yesterday,” said Miraj Vora, derivative analyst at Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt. Ltd. A higher rollover is typically a bullish sign and means investors expect gains to continue. Reliance Industries Ltd gained as much as 3.22%, while Tata Steel Ltd gained as much as 5.6% to Rs. 511.90, its highest since September 2014. Consumer firm ITC Ltd, which is slated to report March quarter results later in the day, gained as much as 1.55%. Meanwhile, downstream oil companies lost some ground. “There is some profit-booking in downstream oil companies,” Patnaik said. Indian Oil Corp Ltd slipped for the first time in 3 sessions, falling as much as 5.2%, while Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd lost as much as 3.3% and looked set to snap 3 sessions of gains. Pharma company Cipla Ltd dropped to an eleven-month low after posting a quarterly loss against analysts’ expectations.

MuMbai, May 26 (DNa): Imagine a pair of Christian Dior grey silver tone earrings originally priced at Rs 35,000, now retailing for Rs 21,000? Or Prada oval frame sunglasses costing a mere Rs 7,000, as against the original Rs 26,000? Or a pretty Dolce & Gabbana dress that you can buy for half the original price of Rs 45, 000? It ain’t raining in discounts from the world’s leading luxury brands. It is instead a fast-evolving trend of retailing ‘pre-owned’ luxury. Owners of high-end luxe brands find re-sale value in their super-expensive Cartiers and Salvatore Ferragamos, while aspirational consumers perceive preowned goods as a great way to own an unaffordable brand. And to leverage this demand and supply are fashionsavvy entrepreneurs who’ve started platforms where buyers and sellers can indulge in luxury transactions. “Luxury was considered unaffordable in India. Only a few people would indulge in it and that too overseas. By retailing pre-owned, we are making luxury accessible to more people. Moreover, owners of luxury can look to make some money for goods they no longer use,” says An-

vita Mehra, founder & CEO of Confidential Couture, a platform for luxury buying and re-selling. According to Mehal Kejriwal, cofounder of DuaVivo, which connects luxury buyers and sellers, pre-owned has caught up with people across India and the trend is growing. The concept works when sellers list out their products, which undergo stringent quality and authenticity checks, followed by bio-cleansing and professional photography; before being made live on the platforms for re-

and students in the 17-50 age group. “The initial stigma attached to preowned luxury is fading now. The interesting part is the paradigm shift in the type of visitors; with buyers becoming sellers and vice versa,” says Mehra. The experts state that though most sellers are from New Delhi, Mumbai or the other metroes, buyers come from every place. The potential for pre-owned luxury is high. The Indian luxury market is estimated at $18.3 bn, growing at a compound annual rate of 25%. And sensing the potential, the luxury platforms are chalking out growth plans. DuaVivo has plans to go international by tracking buyers and sellers from geographies like Dubai, Singapore and the UK. Kejriwal plans on introducing offline stores to create awareness about the pre-owned concept, engage with buyers and sellers and garner more traction. Confidential Couture, which witnesses a 20% growth in order volumes month-onmonth and a 15% growth in the items that come in for selling, is looking at adding more product categories. “We are also working towards a better UI/ UX, especially for mobile phone users,” says Mehra.

The rise of Esports and what it means for brands E.J. Schultz

I

Adage India

an Porter did something that unnerved his parents: He dropped out of college to play video games for a living. "They were obviously giving me crap about it and telling me, 'When are you going back to school?'" His retort, half-joking, was, "I want to make more money than you guys next year." Pretty soon, no one was laughing. Mr. Porter, 23, a onetime honors student at the University of Washington, hauled in nearly $200,000 over a 12-month period in 2014 playing in video game tournaments. Three years later, the money continues to roll in for Mr. Porter and other players like him who are climbing the ranks of the nearly $700 million global competitive videogame-playing industry known as esports. The prize pools are rising because there is a large, ravenous segment of fans who watch online or pack stadiums like Los Angeles' Staples Center to cheer on their favorite players competing in games like "League of Legends" and "Call of Duty." The explosive growth has started catching the eye of big-spending marketers including Arby's, Audi, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Gillette and Bud Light. They are among the brands putting money into esports in hopes of reaching the sport's demographic sweet spot: males between the ages of 21 to 35 who are increasingly hard to reach via traditional advertising. For marketers able to navigate the nascent esports landscape, which one analyst group compared to the Wild West, the paybacks can be huge because gamers have shown loyalty to brands that do it right. "If you are a CMO and you are not in esports in 2017, you are going to risk getting fired," said Tobias Sherman, global head of esports at talent agency powerhouse WMEIMG. The agency runs an esports league in partnership with Turner Broadcasting called ELeague that launched in 2016 and includes games shown on TV on TBS as well as online on popular esports site Twitch, which recently drew more than 1 million viewers for a single event. The global esports economy—which includes media rights, advertising, sponsorships, merchandising and ticket sales—will grow by 41% in 2017 to $696 million and reach $1.49 billion by 2020, according to Newzoo, which provides market intelligence for esports and global gaming. Newzoo estimates the global esports audience at 385 million people, including 191 million enthusiasts and 194 million occasional viewers. Sponsorship revenue is expected to reach $266 million in 2017, while ad spending on esports will hit $155 million, according to Newzoo. That still pales in comparison to traditional sports behemoths like the NFL, which hauled in $1.25 billion in sponsorship revenue last season, according to sponsorship consultancy IEG. But esports, while still a niche, is gaining ground and is poised to enter the mainstream. Newzoo forecasts that sponsorship spending will reach $655 million by 2020, while ad spending in the esports industry will climb to $224 million. Even Will Ferrell is getting involved. According to media reports, the actor, who has already starred in films revolving around competitive basketball, ice skating and car racing, has signed on to star in a movie about esports, which will further cement its place in popular culture. Some universities have even begun offering esports scholarships. That includes University of California, Irvine, which last year opened a 3,500-squarefoot "esports arena" that includes 80 custom gaming PCs and a webcasting studio capable of broadcasting matches to millions of viewers. To outsiders, it might sound crazy: Why

would people want to watch other people play video games? Insiders point to similarities with traditional sports. Just like basketball or football, esports has teams, leagues, championships, stars and passionate fans—plenty of them. Esports players even train like traditional athletes, logging countless hours of practice time. Still picturing out-of-shape kids playing video games in their mother's darkened basement? Then consider this: The renown IMG Academy—an elite boarding school and training program in Florida geared for athletes in basketball, football, tennis and other traditional sports—recently added an esports training program that includes physical, mental and nutritional aspects. At IMG, members of an esports team called Faze Clan last year went through a three-day boot camp in advance of a big Call of Duty tournament. The regimen included weightlifting, stretching, nutritional education and vision training meant to improve reaction time, according to a video posted on the "Call of Duty" website. "Esports has a physical component to it. The athletes are playing for many hours at a time: You have to have eye-to-hand coordination, you have to be able to have good posture, good flexibility," David Hesse, IMG's director of athletic and personal development, says in the video. "You can have an argument all day long about what sport is. But I think esports is going to be and is perceived as a sport amongst the community. That is all that really matters," said Dan Ciccone, who leads RevXP, which is the esports arm of Chicago-based sports marketing agency Revolution. One of RevXP's clients is Optic Gaming, a suburban Chicagobased esports franchise that has revolutionized the industry by putting as much emphasis on content creation and entertainment as it does on winning tournaments.

(See Inside Esports Star Franchise Optic Gaming) Mr. Porter, whose esports moniker is "Crimsix," plays for Optic's "Call of Duty" team. For brands and fans, esports offers something that most traditional sports cannot—nearly unprecedented access to star players. This mostly occurs online, where players routinely interact with fans via social media or with YouTube videos. One of the biggest digital players is Twitch, the six-year-old social video platform and community for gamers that Amazon bought for $970 million in 2014. The site allows anyone to livestream themselves playing video games. Today the site boasts more than 2 million unique streamers per month, drawing 9.7 million active daily viewers with an engagement rate of 106 minutes watched per person per day, according to its website. "For individual players, the pathway to esports success is now clear: Build a following on Twitch, get noticed by teams and sponsors alike, get big," according to an esports report issued late last year by Leaders, which publishes market intelligence for sports industry leaders. Twitch also streams most of the biggest esports competitions across the globe, drawing huge audiences. The site is free, but Twitch's secret sauce is its ad revenue model. The top 17,000 streamers, which include professional esports players, can participate in an ad-revenue-sharing program. But the players, not Twitch, decide in real time when the ads run during their streaming sessions. So a top esports player might hop on Twitch to practice playing, draw thousands of viewers, and then take a quick break and ask viewers to watch an ad, noting that it will help support their career. "It creates a much more honest and genuine relationship between the advertising and the content creators because there is a direct link there," said Nathan Lindberg, di-

rector of global esports sponsorships at Twitch. Players don't just stream their games on Twitch, they interact directly with fans via a live chat that runs beside the video. "When was the last time you heard LeBron James tweet, 'Hey I'm going to be at the Y this weekend practicing and shooting hoops; come on down and shoot hoops with me.' That doesn't happen in traditional sports, but it happens all the time" in esports, Mr. Ciccone said. If accessibility is the greatest strength of esports, it's biggest weakness might be its disorganization. The sport looks like a scattered mess compared with traditional sports, which are neatly organized by central leagues such as the National Basketball Association and National Football League that oversee a reliable schedule of regular season games followed by playoffs and a championship game. Esports events, on the other hand, are run by myriad organizations including game publishers and media companies. Esports is the Wild West with a "fractured landscape and lack of cohesive calendar," the Leaders report stated. "For the outsider, it is almost impenetrable to decipher what and when the biggest events are and how they fit into a wider narrative." Big players include Activision Blizzard, the maker of games including "Call of Duty" and "StarCraft," which in 2015 acquired Major League Gaming. MLG operates MLG.tv, an online broadcast network for professional gaming, and the MLG Pro Circuit, the longestrunning esports league in North America. Another behemoth is Riot Games, maker of esports hit "League of Legends." Riot, which is owned by Chinese internet giant Tencent, runs the League of Legends Championship Series. Globally, the most established player is German-based Electronic Sports League, or ESL, which was founded in 2000 and hosts major events

across the globe. Esports had humble beginnings. The Leaders report traced the sport's roots to informal competitions held at video game arcades in the 1970s. One of the first breakthroughs came in 1980, when Atari's National Space Invaders Championship drew 10,000 participants across the U.S., the report noted. Esports as a spectator sport first took off in South Korea, where cable networks began broadcasting tournaments of the "StarCraft" game in the early 2000s. By 2004, Korean StarCraft events were drawing 100,000 people to stadium, Leaders noted. Intel gave the sport a push in 2006 when it teamed with ESL to create the Intel Extreme Masters, whose most recent season included stops in Shanghai, Oakland, Calif., South Korea and Poland and a total prize pool of more than $1 million. The most recent event in Katowice, Poland, drew 173,000 people during the last weekend in February and first weekend in March, plus an additional 46 million unique online viewers, according to organizers. Intel uses the events to showcase high-powered personal computer processors, including some that are tailored to the gaming community, like its Core i7 "extreme edition" processor. "We bring things like that to the gaming community and they sell out instantly," said Intel Global Marketing VP Julie Coppernoll. In the U.S., a watershed moment for esports came in 2013 when a reported 13,000 people packed the Staples Center to watch a team from South Korea defeat a Chinese team at the world championship final of League of Legends. The Los Angeles Times covered it just like a regular sport, noting that "fans, with the help of inflatable noise-making sticks, cheered every time someone killed an opponent. Many were rooting for the underdogs and hoping the bloodshed would con-

tinue late into the night." "It was so visible, and that changed the whole thing," Newzoo CEO Peter Warman told Ad Age in a recent interview. "A couple months later, Madison Square Garden filled up—and that was it," he added, because mainstream media outlets like Turner and ESPN "decided not to mock esports but to embrace it." The rising fan and media interest meant U.S. brands could no longer ignore esports, and plenty have gotten involved lately. While the audience is attractive—especially for brands seeking millennial males—there are risks, notably that gamers are a savvy group. The sport is new enough that fans will reward brands that help it grow by backing teams and tournaments. But gamers will punish brands who are seen as exploitive and only in it for a short-term gain, according to industry experts. "What gamers care about is altruism, and they want to see the brands doing something that benefits the space, not just the brand," Mr. Lindberg said. Brands that get it wrong "do a logo slap," he said. "They are in and out very quickly, they don't stay." But online, esports is a significant force. The Jan. 29th ELeague final drew more than 1 million concurrent viewers on Twitch, breaking a record. While esports is a digital-first sport, getting TV attention is critical to making it mainstream, according to some industry experts. "We are not trying to necessarily migrate esports to television. The broadcasts for us provides a portal for us to be able to present esports to a broader audience or potentially a more casual fan," said Craig Barry, exec VP-chief content officer for Turner Sports. "I hear words like 'mainstream' around esports, and although it's getting there, it is still very much niche," he said. But "it's a huge niche and an extremely engaged community." Yet spending by esports falls short of traditional sports. Enthusiasts will spend an average of $3.64 per person following the sport in 2017, according to Newzoo. Compare that to basketball, on which fans spend an average of $15 each. The reason for the discrepancy is that esports content is "largely available for free and the money spent on merchandise remains relatively small," Newzoo stated. But spending is rising and expected to reach $5.20 per fan by 2020. One development that could nudge esports into the mainstream is new involvement by key backers of traditional sports. Back in Chicago, esports pro Mr. Porter has an appetite for something else: Maintaining his status as the winningest player in "Call of Duty" history. On an average day, he practices from the afternoon to as late as 3 a.m., he said. "It's a grind," he said. But when you play a video game for a living, "I can't call it work." As for his parents? They "obviously support me now," he said. As the money rolled in, "they were surprised to the point where they were like, 'We can't tell him anything more.”

Within minutes, the music swells, the mirrors in the 85-degree heated room begin to fog and sweaty ponytails come undone as participants perform 5 grueling, uninterrupted minutes of squat jumps while Toomey unleashes occasional expletive-laced insights. “We’re really using the physical body as a metaphor to deal with what’s out there,” said Toomey, a former fashion executive for Ralph Lauren and Dior, who opened a luxe studio in Tribeca in January. The goal of her 75-minute class is to train the mind to create new ways to respond — rather than react in the moment — to challenging external triggers. Other spiritual workouts gaining popularity around the U.S. include the intenSati Method, Qoya and Equinox’s Headstrong. Yoga and tai chi have drawn from these principles for years, but a new crop of workouts includes more cardio and strength-training moves as many fitness buffs seek more than a six-pack from their workouts. Toomey leaves a moment at the end of each song to stop the physical movement and encourage participants to reflect. “How

are you feeling, not what are you thinking?” she asks the class. Headstrong uses high-intensity interval training and changing stimuli to challenge the body and brain. The first three sections of the class focus on stretching, agility and intensity; the class ends with a 15-minute guided medita-

tion. Qoya founder Rochelle Schieck incorporates lots of free movement into her women-only workout that refers to “movement as medicine.” It’s the least physically challenging of the bunch and is good for beginners, but it has a powerful emotional takeaway.

Each Qoya class has a theme. If the theme is freedom, participants are given a moment to reflect on what it feels like when they don’t feel free. Then they express those emotions through free-form dance. Schieck says there’s immense value in acknowledging uncomfortable emotions like fear

or anger and “letting people embrace their wholeness instead of pretending I always feel free.” Part of the class includes a few minutes of shaking, which is designed to shake fear and discomfort out of the body to calm the nervous system. The class ends with a fun, choreographed dance that might include kickboxing moves to “Eye of the Tiger.” Both Toomey and Schieck followed a similar journey in creating their workouts. Yoga wasn’t enough for Toomey, who longed for more fire and cardio. Schieck was a yoga instructor but also felt something was missing. She also took pole dancing classes and loved its physicality, but kept getting injured. “Women kept saying as I was just developing it, ‘I’ve been waiting my whole life for this,’” said Schieck, who has trained some 300 Qoya teachers. Nadine Abramcyk, a 38-yearold small business owner and mother of two, attends one or two of Toomey’s classes a week, calling it her “personal therapy.” The change was so dramatic, her husband started going. “I had a very cathartic experience with it. ... It really isn’t about the physical for me. It’s really about the mental combined with the physical. It’s so multidimensional in that way and does

something that regular exercise can’t.” Natalia Mehlman Petrzela is an associate professor of history at The New School who is researching feminism and group fitness. She spent years working out at the gym, “but as a feminist, I was so disappointed in the culture and the language ... there was this dominant language, ‘This is for your bikini body, what did you eat last night, how many inches did you lose ladies?’ It just fell short in many ways of the much broader, deeper potential of what exercise can mean to women.” Petrzela started teaching the high-energy cardio and strength intenSati Method, which includes vocal affirmations. “When you’re sweating, your heart is pumping (and) there is science that shows you’re open or particularly susceptible to your mind-set,” she said. IntenSati, created by Patricia Moreno, starts with an affirmation reminder that you can choose how you react to things. The class includes squats, lunges, side roundhouse kicks and punches while chanting something like “I am strong.” “I felt I finally had the words to express something I’d been feeling but didn’t have an outlet to,” said Petrzela.

Living books on loan

T

his is an annual event at the main library in a little arctic city. It was started some nine years ago and proved so successful that it was held every year. Called ‘Levende bøker’ it is a special day when library users can come to the library and borrow a living book for an hour. The ‘books’ are people from different countries and nationalities and cultures. They range from ages 16 and above. Many of the ‘books’ come from war-torn countries and are trying to find a new life in a peaceful zone. Other ‘books’ are trying to get a good education to equip themselves to get better jobs. It is quite an interesting experiment. People come in hesitantly and ask if they can borrow a book for example, on Somalia or Iraq or Iran or some other available country. The young Somalians and Iraqis and Iranians, Syrians, Uzbeks, Serbs, Russians joined by other nationalities, are sitting by a table, ready to be lent out. For a half hour or an hour, people get to ask them questions on their lives

in their home countries. These young books get all kinds of questions and they answer them as best as they can from the information and knowledge they have within themselves. Many questions are on culture: people want to know what kind of food they eat, how youngsters socialize in their cultures, how marriages take place, and all the aspects of social life that most individuals find of interest. There are questions on the political turmoil in their home countries and these questions range from a mild curiousity to real interest. The objective of the project is to facilitate the city to have face to face encounters with the minorities living within their borders, and create a space where people can discover that they are ordinary humans trying to live their lives the best way they can. Young girls from different cultures talk about things that interest them and find a common plane to connect. People get the opportunity to sit together in a neutral environment, and find out that

other humans are in truth, very similar to them and that their goals in life are even akin to their own. We need this so much to help societies survive together, co-exist together and come together to build up the towns that they make into their homes. The project addresses stereotyping and the misconceptions that exist around minority communities. It has the potential for widening people’s minds about ‘the other’ and turning around perspectives full circle. It treats each person as a book, a living book that you can read and learn from. It creates a great opportunity for those who are willing to participate and be willing to be loaned out. Because it is the opportunity for them to speak up and express themselves in societies where their voices are seldom heard because they are the minority voice. At these events, they also come closer to the people who have borrowed them and are showing genuine interest in their lives. Such moments create empathy, and fellow feeling. It is a deterrent to crime because the end results of these projects are creating

inclusiveness and understanding (keeping in mind that many adolescent crimes are spurred by a sense of feeling unwanted and misunderstood). The curse of otherness can be kept at bay because borrowing a living book is a warm occasion of connecting. This is one of many projects that can be used to help humans connect better. It works for schools and educational institutions where young students get the chance to meet people of their own age and learn about the lives they led in their home countries. Nor is it one-sided.The project works as an eye-opener for the borrowers. Young people who live in peaceful countries learn to appreciate what they have. Thus it becomes a mutually beneficial project. Insularity is dangerous. It doesn’t teach us to treat people as they deserve to be treated. It teaches us to treat them according to the collective identity society has given them. Make time to borrow a living book – the ones that live in your neighbourhood. Chances are, you won’t regret it.

old being a soft metal, contact or abrasion between different jewellery pieces may damage them. Wrap each piece separately to avoid such a problem, say experts. Anita Mertia, Founder at Shri Ram Jewellers, and Subash Naheta, Chairman of Jaipur Jewels, have listed ways in which you can keep your expensive gold safe and make it last longer: * Don't wear your gold jewellery while bathing or cleaning: There are chemicals in soaps and other cleaning agents. Exposure to these chemicals can dull your gold. * Store it separately: Gold is a soft metal. Contact or abrasion between different pieces may damage them. Wrap each piece separately in a soft cotton cloth and try hanging up the gold chains. * It needs occasional buffing: Though the jewellery may not need cleaning yet but buffing or rubbing your jewellery with a soft chamois cloth can help restore the shine of the piece immediately. * Cleaning tips: Mix mild dish washing detergent with water. Soak your jewellery. If the piece has stones avoid soaking, use a soft cotton cloth dipped in the cleaning mixture and wipe down carefully. Rub the pieces with hand or cotton swabs one at a time. You may also use a children's soft toothbrush for heavily ornamental pieces with numerous crevices. Make sure to use the brush extremely gently. Rinse with warm water to remove all the suds and dry with a soft cloth or leave it out to air-dry overnight. * For jadau jewellery: For your precious gold-based jadau jewellery, an eraser can be used to wipe off marks that develop over time. It is not a very good idea to use water on jadau jewellery since humidity may leave the jewellery rusted.

oing through Matriculation/Class 10 Board exams in the Indian Union can bring trauma and turmoil. Scarred, some of us have spent the better part of the rest of our lives unlearning ethos imparted through the education system. Jitendra Jain, author of a 2017 book titled ‘Chasing 33%’, however, is at the top of the game, embracing the world of competition as a senior executive at a multinational firm. Much like his protagonist, Jain grew up in Golaghat. His book traverses the life of a fictional 16-year-old and his friends in Dergaon, Golaghat, Assam, on the cusp of their Class 10 board exams. Like many of us, these kids have the itch of doing something completely different on the eve of the next paper. From playing cricket to watching movies in shady theatres or even creating their own technology, the protagonist makes it clear: that he is up to no good. He promptly attracts insults from all quarters for not keeping up with the most important event of his life. The book is divided predominantly into subject-wise chapters. They tell the story of how the young elements deal with life before every paper, with some aiming to score a pass 33 percent and be done with the torrid affair. Narratives exist galore from the North East region but rarely one that tells of how a non native of the region experiences the annual rut of an imposition. The most exciting bits of the book, thus, are the ones where the author tells us the geographical or economic-sociocultural aspects of the non native protagonist’s life— escaping on a train from Furkating, regional news that affects him, friendships that squeeze him and his friends through situations, or expectations and bottlenecks faced by second generation migrant families. But these contextual, even funny, bits are just that. Bits. They are few and far in between. The author seems keen to keep the book short and easy to read even for those who may not have won the board exam-battle. This does not make us any less or more than who we are, is the message. Unabashed fat shaming and degrading elders throughout the narrative show how ruthless children can be when values of respect, love, kindness or empathy get left out of education; similarly corporal punishment gets its moment in the spotlight. Awaiting excitement though, we wonder till the end if three random dogs featuring more than once will find parallels with the three friends in the story. Alas, no such moment appears as lectures are delivered, and institutional injustices corrected by way of ‘clever’ answers to exam questions. It scratches the surface of what its hero feels is an unjust system but puts a full stop at the ‘judgmental’ aspect of the score card. It does not attempt to rescue those less fortunate, those who may never even get a chance to study till class 10 or those with no option but to do well, nor does it want to overhaul the system. The dilemma raised is left as it is, at the level of a dilemma. But that is alright as the first time writer remains uniformly focused on the message he tries to portray—Board exams results, as his hero puts it, are “as good as shit.”

MONEY MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES Inza, Assistant Professor (Department of Management – BBA)

What exactly is Management about? Is it necessary only for large corporate companies? Is it required only for private enterprises or for businesses only? Opposition to fight if no govt consensus on President

New Delhi, May 26 (iaNS): Major opposition parties, including the Congress and mutually antagonistic outfits in states, came together on Friday on a common platform and decided to contest the upcoming presidential election if the government does not come up with a consensus candidate -- but the absence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar set off speculation. On a day the Narendra Modi government completed three years in office, the luncheon meeting convened by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, also provided a joint platform for them to hit out at its policies, saying that they had imposed unprecedented burden on all sections of people, including farmers, youth, minorities and weaker sections. A joint statement issued after the meeting said, it's a normal practice for the ruling party to take the initiative to build a consensus on the names of candidates for the posts of President and Vice President. "This has not happened so far. If acceptable consensual candidates do not emerge, then we (opposition parties) shall decide to field such persons who shall steadfastly defend the constitutional values of our republic."

Banerjee, who left the meeting at the Parliament House a little early, told reporters that it was agreed that a consensus was possible on a government nominee also if the candidate was secular and would uphold the Constitution. In case a consensus was not possible then a committee would be formed to choose an opposition nominee. However, the absence of JD-U chief Nitish Kumar set political tongues wagging, with his scheduled attendance on Saturday at a lunch being hosted by the Prime Minister for the visiting Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, adding fuel to the fire. JD-U leaders were at pains to explain that Kumar was only attending an official function, and it had nothing to do with politics. However, political observers say that Kumar's absence from the opposition leaders meeting where RJD chief Lalu Prasad was present, was more than what meets the eye -- especially after the IT raids on the "benami" properties of Lalu's kin. Observers wonder whether it could lead to fresh political realignment in Bihar. Friday's luncheon meeting however brought together some leaders who have been strong ri-

vals in the states, including BSP chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and her Left rivals CPI-M's Sitaram Yechury and CPI's S. Sudhakar Reddy. Others present included former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar, Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah. The term of President

Mukherjee will end in July and that of Vice President Hamid Ansari in August this year. The ruling BJP-led alliance has so far not come up with any names but is learnt to have begun discussions with its allies to pick up nominees for both the posts. The BJP has a clear edge in the presidential election due to support of some parties outside the ruling National Democratic Alliance. Banerjee said there was no harm in discussing a candidate

with the government if it comes out with a name and referred to the 2002 Presidential election when the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had floated A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's name and a consensus was evolved around it. Asked about another term for incumbent Pranab Mukherjee, she said no names were discussed in the meeting. Banerjee said all the parties were united in criticism of the government over Kashmir, the violence in Saharanpur and demonetisation. The joint statement said the opposition parties resolved to strengthen floor coordination in Parliament and "unitedly oppose the government's policies that are imposing unprecedented further burden on all sections of our people - farmers, working people, youth, SCs, STs minorities, women and other weaker sections of the society in various parts of the country". Talking to reporters, Mayawati said the condition of Dalits, people belonging to weaker sections, religious minorities, poor and farmers has deteriorated in the three years of NDA government. "The meeting was held in a very good atmosphere. All parties decided that the policies

and working style of the central government will be taken to the public," she said. Lalu said the Modi government has failed on all fronts. "Under Modi's rule the Pakistan flag is being waved in Jammu and Kashmir and terrorists from Pakistan cross the border and kill our soldiers. All promises made to the youth have also failed," he said. CPI's Sudhakar Reddy said the opposition parties may wait for the ruling alliance to announce a candidate "till the announcement of presidential polls". Among those who attended the meeting were Congress leaders A.K. Antony, Mallikarjun Kharge and Ahmed Patel, JD-U's K. C. Tyagi, Samajwadi Party's Ram Gopal Yadav and Naresh Agrawal, BSP's Satish Misra, DMK's Kanimozhi, RJD's Prem Chand Gupta, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's Hemant Soren and Sanjiv Kumar, Kerala Congress' Jose Mani, IUML's P.K. Kunhalikutty, CPI-M's P. Karunakaran, CPI's D. Raja, AIUDF's Badruddin Ajmal, RSP's N.K. Premchandran and C.S. Puttaraju of Janata DalSecular. Sonia Gandhi had taken the initiative to evolve a consensus presidential candidate of the opposition and had spoken to a number of leaders in this context.

'Supercop' KPS Gill passes away at 82

New Delhi, May 26 (iaNS): 'Supercop' K.P.S. Gill, who had played a major role in wiping out militancy from Punjab in the '90s and had advised Gujarat and Chhattisgarh governments on security, died here on Friday after suffering complications arising out of kidney failure and heart disease. Kanwar Singh Pal Gill, 82, died at 2:55 p.m. at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital where he was admitted on May 18. Gill was suffering from the end-stage kidney failure and significant ischemic heart disease. He had been recovering from peritonitis but died of sudden cardiac arrest due cardiac arrhythmia, said nephrologist D.S. Rana, who had treated Gill. Known for his no-nonsense attitude, Gill was a

controversial figure and several groups had levelled allegations of human rights violations against him while he battled insurgency. There was also a case of sexual harassment filed by Indian Administrative Service officer Rupan Deol Bajaj, a case in which he was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment in 1996. But after an appeal in the Supreme Court, the jail sentence was reduced to probation. When Punjab faced a serious problem of insurgency by Khalistan extremists in the 1980s, Gill was Director General of Police from 1988 to 1990 and then again from 1991 to 1995 till his retirement. Before Gill, the state had contracted the services of another top cop, Julius

Ribeiro from Maharashtra, who had contributed his might in eliminating terror. In a controversial decision, Gill expanded a bounty system of rewards for police who killed militants -- a practice his detractors alleged encouraged the police to resort to extra-judicial killings. Gill was largely credited with having dealt with

militancy in Punjab with an iron hand and with breaking the back of the Khalistani movement. During the militancy and even a little later, scores of political leaders and police officials lost their lives in the terror that held sway in the state in the '80s and the '90s. Notable among them was Akali Dal leader Harcharan Singh Longowal,

who signed the Punjab Accord with the Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and the then Chief Minister Beant Singh. Gill was not deterred by the anti-Centre discourse that took place after 'Operation Blue Star' in 1984, and he dared to command "Operation Black Thunder" in 1988 to again flush out militants hiding in the Harmandar Saheb, the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The operation offended the Sigh high priests and they held the then Chief Minister Surjit Singh Barnala "guilty" of being 'antisect' for ordering the antimilitant campaign. Later, Barnala made amends by offering apologies and doing 'kar sewa' at the Golden Temple. In 2000, the government of Sri Lanka sought Gill's expertise as an anti-

militancy expert to draw a counter-terrorism strategy against the dreaded LTTE, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Two years later, after the post-Godhra violence in Gujarat, Narendra Modi as the Chief Minister appointed him a security advisor in the state. Gill was also considered an expert on the northeast region where he had worked in his initial years in the Indian Police Service (IPS), essentially in Assam. The Chhattisgarh government also later appointed him a security advisor to help check Maoists' menace between 2005 and 2009. Gill's interests also spread to hockey. He had remained at the helm as the Indian Hockey Federation President for long but controversies did not spare him there too.

BJP leaders get bail, seven workers sent to police custody in Bengal

KolKata, May 26 (iaNS): A court here on Friday granted bail to all senior BJP leaders including its national General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, West Bengal unit president Dilip Ghosh, and Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly, but remanded seven party workers to police custody till Monday in connection with disturbances during its protest here a day back. A total of 135 Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and workers were presented before the Bankshall Court, a day after the party's activists clashed with security personnel here during a protest march to the city police headquarters Lalbazar. All the BJP leaders and workers were arrested on Thursday and spent the night in the Lalbazar police lock up. State BJP secretary Locket Chatterjee, a former actress, also secured bail. Altogether 128 BJP leaders and workers were bailed out on Friday, but seven others were remanded to police custody till May 29 for their alleged involvement in specific cases relating to destruction of public property, rioting and hurling bombs. Moving the bail plea, the defence counsel said no bombs were seized from the arrested workers. They were arrested first, and the bombs seized only later. Wondering why the workers - if they at all wanted to create lawlessness - would burst only one bomb, counsel said it was a political agitation, but police carried out a "ruthless" baton charge. "The police claim bricks were thrown at them, but they have made no such seizure. There is no evidence that those seven protesters were throwing bombs," counsel said. Opposing the bail prayer, the public prosecutor said for maintenance of law and order, the protestors were arrested first, as the topmost priority of the police is to save people's lives. The prosecutor said the accused were detained after the incident, but the case was started only after a specific enquiry. "There are several non-bailable sections. So those under such sections need to be interrogated to go into the depth of the case," he added. After listening to both sides, the judge sent the seven workers to police remand and gave bail to 128 others including the top leaders.

"Against Modi's promise of 2 crore jobs annually, only 1.35 lakh jobs were created in 2015. We need to create over 34 crore jobs by 2028 but what is the state of domestic investment and bank credit, both are at their historic lowest," the former minister added. The party demanded to know the government's plans to counter the growing joblessness.

its troops foiled an attack by Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT) on a patrol party along the Line of Control in Uri sector of Kashmir, killing two militants. "Alert troops foiled a BAT attack on our patrol party in Uri sector today. Two BAT terrorists were killed in the operation," an army official said here. The BAT attack was effectively repulsed, the of-

of the two slain militants were lying in "no man's" land along the LoC. Two Indian soldiers were beheaded in a BAT action in Krishnaghati sector of Poonch on May 1 which had triggered a strong reaction from India. On Tuesday, the Army had said it launched "punitive fire assaults" on Pakistani positions across the LoC, inflicting "some dam-

trated from a Pakistani post which is 200 metres from the LoC in the area. They were spotted on the Indian side around 8:40 AM in South of Jhelum in the Uri sector. In exchange of fire, both were neutralised at distance of 500 metres from the LoC in the Indian side, the sources said. One AK-47 rifle, one pistol and other warlike stores were recovered, they said.

CBSE to announce Class 12 results on Sunday New Delhi, May 26 (iaNS): The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will announce the Class 12 results on Sunday, the board said on Friday. The results will be announced online and can be accessed on -- www.results.nic.in, www.cbseresults.nic.in and www.cbse.nic.in The results are coming out after an ongoing controversy over the board's moderation policy. The CBSE had proposed scrapping the policy on April 25 that entailed according extra marks to students as compensation for tough, inarticulate, confusing questions. However, when the matter reached the Delhi High court, it shot down the proposal, saying the rules cannot be changed at the eleventh hour.

Centre bans the sale of cattle for slaughter at markets across India New Delhi, May 26 (ageNCieS): The government has banned the sale of cows and buffalo for slaughter at animal markets across India, rules that will hurt millions of poor farmers and squeeze supplies to the country’s meat industry. The central regulation for cattle business notified this week allows only farmland owners to trade at animal markets. The notification covers bulls, bullocks, cows, buffalos, steers, heifers and calves, as well as the camel trade. The new rules do not amount to a nation-wide ban on cattle slaughter or its trade. But they will squeeze supplies to India’s Rs 1-lakh crore meat industry which sources about 90% of its requirement from animal markets. The rest comes for licensed breeders. Experts say the rules will hurt the mostly Muslim traders who face mounting violence by increasingly assertive cow vigilante groups. Farmers will also be hit because they will be deprived of a traditional source of income from selling nonmilch and old cattle. Farmers who can’t take care of their cattle will have to pay for their upkeep in shelters. To be implemented in the next three months, the move introduces lots of paperwork for cow traders who are mostly poor and illiterate. For instance, be-

fore the trade, both seller and buyer will have to produce identity and farmland ownership documents. After buying a cow, a trader must make five copies of proof of sale and submit them at the local revenue office, the local veterinary doctor in the district of the purchaser, animal market committee, apart from one each for seller and buyer. More than 99% Indians now live in areas under cow protection laws, Gujarat has strictest rules “Take an undertaking that the animals are bought for agriculture purposes and not for slaughter,” reads a directive to committees overseeing animal markets in the rule notified under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act of 1960 that gives the Centre powers over animal welfare. The new rules were approved by former environment minister Anil Madhav Dave before his death last week, ministry sources told HT. The ministry drafted the rules on Supreme Court directions aimed at improving condition of animals in these markets. Considered holy by many Hindus, cows are a sensitive political topic and have gained in importance since Prime Minister Narendra Modi stormed to power in 2014 as several BJP-ruled states enacted strict laws to punish cow slaughter.

In 2 years, BJP govt electrified 13,523 villages; only 8% completely By Mukta Patil

s many as 73 per cent of the 18,452 villages that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government identified for electrification in 2015 now have power supply, but only eight per cent of these had all their households electrified, according to the governments own data. As of May 25, 13,523 villages have been electrified, but 100 per cent household connectivity has been achieved in only 1,089 villages, according to data in the Power Ministry's Grameen Vidyutikaran (GARV) dashboard. Besides, 25 per cent (45 million) of rural households across the country still have no electricity. In Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Jharkhand and Bihar, fewer than 50 per cent of rural households have electricity, three years after the BJP was sworn in at the Centre having promised "electricity for all". Among the 43.5 million below-povertyline households identified to be provided with free electricity connections under the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, 23.5 million (59 per cent) have been covered, and many geographically remote locations have been connected with off-grid sources of power. However, this kind of basic energy access does not provide larger benefits to recipients, and is not a substitute for grid connections, studies show. A village is considered electrified if electricity is provided in public places such as schools, panchayat offices, health

centres, dispensaries and community centres, and at least 10 per cent of households, according to the criteria used by the Power Ministry since October 1997. So, a village can be considered electrified even if 90 per cent of its households do not have electricity. As such, household-level data is a better metric to assess citizens' access to electricity. At the household level, several states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh report less than 50 per cent of their rural households have electricity supply, data from the ministry show. "Two challenges to electrifying households are: One, many poor households cannot afford to pay the upfront cost of connection, which ranges from Rs 2,0003,000 depending on the state," Abhishek Jain, senior programme lead at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, told IndiaSpend. "And second, even if they get connections, the supply is far from reliable; so there is no incentive for rural households above the poverty line to connect to the grid." This is because families below poverty line get free connections. This suggests that the challenge of 100 per cent electrification can only be overcome through concerted improvements at various levels -- not the least in the income levels of rural households and in the reliability of power supply. In 2014, when the BJP came to power, India had the world's largest energy access deficit in terms of electricity -- 270 million people, accounting for just under a third of the world's deficit, according to the World Bank's 2017 State of Electricity Access report.

"Certain segments of India have been historically disadvantaged. Due to a lopsided development approach and skewed allocation of resources, they continue to lag behind the rest of the country in socioeconomic indicators," the BJP had said in its manifesto for the 2014 general election, promising to ensure equitable growth and development by "ensuring a basic level of Infrastructure to all -- Home, Electricity, Water, Toilets and Access". The previous Congress-led government, under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana rural electrification scheme, had connected 108,280 villages to the grid between 2005-06 and 2013-14. From 2014 to 2017, under the BJP's rural electrification drive, 14,528 villages have been electrified. On average, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government electrified 12,030 villages per year, while the BJP government has electrified 4,842 -- less than half the UPA's average. In the BJP's third year, 2016-17, 6,015 villages were electrified, five times more than in 2013-14, according to a May 19 press release by the Ministry of Power, but fewer than the villages electrified the year before in 2015-16. Celebrating the achievement, Power Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted: "In the past three years rural electrification has witnessed an unprecedented change, and it is our aim to provide everyone with 24×7 power." Of the 4,492 villages that remained to be electrified at the end of March, 2,268 were scheduled for grid connection, 2,196 for off-grid electrification because of geo-

graphical barriers, and 28 for electrification by state governments, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority. Most off-grid village projects are concentrated in states such as Arunachal Pradesh (958), Assam (357), Jharkhand (356) and Chhattisgarh (306). As part of the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, the BJP's rural electrification scheme, the government had also proposed to provide free electricity connections to over 43.5 million rural households below the poverty line (BPL, with the poverty line set at Rs 816 per capita per month for rural areas). As of April, 25.68 million BPL households (58.9 per cent) were provided free electricity connections, according to the power ministry. Between 2005, when the UPA scheme was launched, and March 2013, a total of 20.5 million BPL households were provided free electricity connections. However, the connection these households get is often unreliable, and the two free-of-cost LED bulbs they are entitled to are often siphoned off to the black market by unscrupulous sub-contractors, IndiaSpend found during travels in villages of eastern Uttar Pradesh. As per the Modi government's promise, all villages could be electrified by May 2018. However, it remains to be seen how many households will actually have access to reliable electricity supply. Despite villages having an electricity connection, true energy access remains low in many states, marked by poor quality, reliability and duration of supply.

Kim’s rocket stars: The trio behind North Korea’s missile programme SEOUL, May 26 (REUtERS): After successful missile launches, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un often exchanges smiles and hugs with the same three men and shares a celebratory smoke with them. The three, shown with Kim in photographs and TV footage in North Korean media, are of great interest to security and intelligence agencies since they are the top people in the secretive country’s rapidly accelerating missile programme, South Korean officials said. They include Ri Pyong Chol, a former top air force general; Kim Jong Sik, a veteran rocket scientist; and Jang Chang Ha, the head of a weapons development and procurement centre. The three have been individually identified previously but the photographs and TV footage show they are clearly Kim’s favourites. Their behaviour with him is sharply at variance with the obsequiousness of other senior aides, most of whom bow and hold their hands over their mouths when speaking to the young leader. Unlike most other officials, two of them have flown with Kim in his private plane Goshawk-1, named after North Korea’s national bird, state TV has shown. The North Korean government does not provide foreign media with a contact point in Pyongyang for comment by email, fax or phone. The North Korean mission to the United

Nations was not immediately available for comment. With their ruling Workers Party, military and scientific credentials, the trio is indispensable to North Korea’s rapidly developing weapons programmes - the isolated nation has conducted two nuclear tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of last year, all in violation of U.N. resolutions. “Rather than going through bureaucrats, Kim Jong Un is keeping these technocrats right by his side, so that he can

AP Investigation: Five things to know about UN sex abuse COLOMBO, May 26 (aP): The key findings on AP’s investigation into the U.N.’s sexual abuse and exploitation controversy: 1. No Sri Lankan peacekeeper has ever been jailed for sexual assault or sexual misconduct despite a child sex ring in Haiti involving at least 134 soldiers that was discovered in 2007. 2. In 2013, Sri Lanka sent a top military general to investigate the alleged rape of a Haitian teenager. The general, who has been dogged by war crimes allegations himself, never talked to the alleged victim and cleared the soldier. 3. The United Nations has expanded individual vetting for Sri Lankan recruits who may have been involved in human rights abuses during the country’s civil war. Some have already been turned away. 4. Women who were raped during Sri Lanka’s generation-long war have begun speaking about how they were held and gang-raped at military camps. One woman said that she was raped by a soldier who later went on to become a U.N. peacekeeper. 5. Since the war ended in 2009, Sri Lanka’s current government has said it is making strides to reconcile its past. Still, despite months of opportunities, it refused repeated requests from the AP to explain how the Haiti sex ring case was investigated or why no one was jailed.

New Silk Road not about military ambitions: China BEIJING, May 26 (REUtERS): China’s ambition to build a new Silk Road is not about seeking to expand its military role abroad nor about seeking to set up foreign bases, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday. The new Silk Road, formally known as the Belt and Road initiative in China, is President Xi Jinping’s signature policy to expand links between Asia, Africa and Europe underpinned by billions of dollars in infrastructure investment. At a summit in Beijing this month, Xi pledged $124 billion for the plan, promising to forge a path of peace, inclusiveness and free trade. But China’s ambitions have caused nervousness in some countries, particularly India and in some European capitals, which suspect Beijing of using the plan to promote Chinese influence globally, pointing to investments in ports in places such as Pakistan that could one day be used by China’s navy. Asked whether Chinese Belt and Road investments in ports in Greece, Pakistan and Sri Lanka had a covert military intention, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said such speculation was “groundless”. The new Silk Road is about cooperation and trade, he told a regular monthly news briefing. “The Belt and Road initiative has no military or geostrategic intent. China is not seeking the right to guide global affairs, or spheres of influence, and will not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.” Still, China has been building a military base in the Horn of Africa country of Djibouti that will be its first overseas naval base, though officially described as a logistics facility. Djibouti’s position on the Indian Ocean’s northwestern edge has fuelled worries in India that it could join China’s “string of pearls”, or military alliances and assets ringing the south Asian nation, including Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

contact them directly and urge them to move fast. It reflects his urgency about missile development,” said An Chan-il, a former North Korean military officer who has defected to the South and runs a think tank in Seoul. Kim Jong Sik and Jang are not from elite families, unlike many other senior figures in North Korea’s ruling class, North Korean leadership experts say. They said Ri, the former air force commander, has been to one of the better-regarded schools in North Korea,

but he and the other two were hand-picked by Kim Jong Un. “Kim Jong Un is raising a new generation of people separate from his father’s key aides,” said a South Korean official with knowledge of the matter, referring to Kim Jong Il, who died in late 2011 leaving the younger Kim in charge. The official requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. THE ‘BIG POTATO’ The most prominent of the three is Ri, according to leader-

ship experts. Always shown smiling in photographs, he is now deputy director of the Workers’ Party Munitions Industry Department, which oversees the development of North Korea’s ballistic missile programme, according to the South Korean government and U.S. Treasury. The department was blacklisted by the U.S. Treasury in 2010 and Ri was named by the South Korean government last year for activities related to the country’s weapons programmes. “The big potato in that trio of people is Ri Pyong Chol,” said Michael Madden, an expert on the North Korean leadership. “He’s been around since before Kim Jong Un was even talked about with any seriousness”. Born in 1948, Ri was partly educated in Russia and promoted when Kim Jong Un started to rise through the ranks in the late 2000s, Madden and the South Korean government official said. Ri has visited China once and Russia twice. He met China’s defence minister in 2008 as the air force commander and accompanied Kim Jong Il on a visit to a Russian fighter jet factory in 2011, according to state media. “Ri looks like the party’s guy in the missile programme,” said Kim Jin-moo, an expert on North Korea’s elite and former government think tank analyst in Seoul.

THE ROCKET SCIENTIST The rocket scientist in the trio is Kim Jong Sik. He started his career as a civilian aeronautics technician, but now wears the uniform of a military general at the Munitions Industry Department, according to experts and the South Korean government. But it was his role in the North Korea’s first successful launch of a rocket in 2012 which really helped him earn recognition, Madden said. “When that thing went off and entered into a lower earth orbit, he got credit for that,” said Madden. “The nuclear and missile guys under Kim Jong Un are getting their jobs based on merit”. Last year, Kim Jong Sik was at the National Aerospace Development Administration or “NADA”, North Korea’s official space agency, where he escorted Kim Jong Un through the mission control room ahead of a successful long-range rocket launch in February. State TV footage showed him riding to a launch site in Kim Jong Un’s private plane. Upon arrival, he accompanied the young leader down the red carpet and received flowers from other senior officials. Most other details, including his age, are not known.

National Defence Science, previously called the Second Academy of Natural Sciences. The body is in charge of the secretive country’s research and development of its advanced weapons systems, “including missiles and probably nuclear weapons”, the U.S. Treasury said in 2010 in its decision to blacklist the group. The organisation obtains technology, equipment, and information from overseas for use in weapons programmes, the Treasury said. Jang was added to the Treasury blacklist in December 2016. Under Jang’s leadership, the academy has around 15,000 staff, including some 3,000 missile engineers, according to South Korean media reports, citing unnamed sources. North Korea’s banned weapons programme began in the early 2000s with a similar trio of men close to the leadership who specialised in procurement, science and military affairs. Of them, logistician Jon Pyong Ho has died. The others - scientist So Sang Guk and military coordinator O Kuk Ryol are elderly and no longer in the public eye. Their place, Madden said, has been taken by Kim Jong Un’s hand-picked men. “These are the men bringTHE MYSTERY MAN Of the three men, the least ing North Korea’s missile prois known about Jang Chang Ha, gramme into the 21st Century.” president of the Academy of the he said.

Militants attack Christians in Egypt, killing at least 28 Exposure to diesel pollution CaIRO, MaRCh 26 (aP): Masked militants riding in three SUVs opened fire Friday on a bus packed with Coptic Christians, including children, south of the Egyptian capital, killing at least 28 people and wounding 22, the Interior Ministry said. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the fourth to target Christians since December, but it bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State group. The attack came on the eve of the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Islamic militants have for years been waging an insurgency mostly centered in the restive northern part of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, although a growing number of attacks have recently also taken place on the mainland. The assault happened while the bus was traveling on a side road in the desert leading to the remote monastery of Saint Samuel the Confessor in Maghagha, in Minya governorate, about 220 kilometers (140 miles) south of Cairo where Christians account for more than 35 percent of the population, the

highest ratio in any province. Security officials quoted witnesses as saying they saw between eight and 10 attackers dressed in military uniforms and wearing masks. The victims were en route from the nearby province of Beni Suef to visit the monastery. Security and medical officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters, said the death toll stood at 28 but feared it could rise. According to Copts United news portal, only three children survived the attack. It was not immediately known how many of the victims were children. Arab TV stations showed images of a badly damaged bus along a roadside, many of its windows shattered and with numerous bullet holes. Footage of the bus’s interior showed blood stains on the seats and shattered glass. Ambulances are seen parked around the bus and bodies are lying on the ground, covered with black plastic sheets. Another video purported to show about 10 bodies of mature men lying on the sand on the side of the road with pools

of blood around them. Children hysterically screaming could be heard in the background. The surge in attacks targeting Christians in Egypt has added to the challenges facing President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s government as it struggles to contain the insurgency while pushing ahead with an ambitious and politically sensitive reform program to revive the country’s ailing economy that already has sent the cost of food and services soaring. There was no immediate word from the government on how it intends to stop similar attacks from taking place, but it is likely to heighten security around churches, monasteries, schools and annual pilgrimages to remote Christian sites across the country. On Wednesday, Egypt blocked access to nearly two dozen websites it said were sympathetic to militants or spreading their ideology. “The growing number of these terror attacks is not at all reassuring,” Father Rafic Greiche, spokesman for the Egyptian Catholic church, told a local television station.

‘Exposure to PM 2.5 from diesel can lead to systemic inflammation, vasoconstriction - narrowing of blood vessels, and raised blood pressure’ LONdON, May 26 (IaNS): People exposed to particulate matter (PM) emitted mainly from diesel used in vehicles may be at greater risk of developing heart attack, heart failure and death, researchers warned. The findings showed that exposure to PM 2.5 from diesel can lead to systemic inflammation, vasoconstriction -- narrowing of blood vessels, and raised blood pressure, all of which can cause harmful changes to the structure and function of heart. The combination of these factors can also increase the pressure in the heart, which enlarges to cope with the overload. Every 5 per cubic metre air or µg/m3 increase in exposure was

associated with a 4-8% increase in left ventricular volume (structure) and a 2% decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (function), the researchers said. “The study found that as PM2.5 exposure rises, the larger the heart gets and the worse it performs. Both of these measures are associated with increased morbidity and mortality from heart disease,” said lead author Nay Aung from Queen Mary University of London. This may be due to an inflammatory response. The inhalation of PM2.5 causes localised inflammation of the lungs followed by a more systemic inflammation affecting the whole body, Aung added. For the study, presented at the annual conference EuroCMR 2017 in Prague, the team included 4,255 participants, 62 years old on average. “Reducing PM 2.5 emission should be an urgent public health priority and the worst offenders such as diesel vehicles should be addressed with policy measures,” Aung noted.

Philippine president appeals rebels to halt siege, start talks ILIGaN CIty, May 26 (REUtERS): Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte appealed to Islamist militants on Friday to abandon hostilities and start dialogue in an effort to end their bloody occupation of a southern city that experts called a major blow to regional security. Duterte said the presence of foreign fighters in street battles that have raged since Tuesday in Marawi City was proof that Islamic State had gained a foothold on the restive island of Mindanao, but there was still a chance for peace. “You can say that the ISIS is here already,” Duterte told soldiers in nearby Iligan City, referring to Islamic State. “My message mainly to the terrorists on the other side is we can still solve this through dialogue. And if you cannot be convinced to stop fighting, so be it. Let’s just fight.” Special forces commandoes were deployed to drive out the remaining 20 to 30 Maute group rebels holed-up in Marawi but encountered heavy resistance on Friday. The army said 11 soldiers and 31 militants

have been killed. Fighting erupted on Tuesday after a bungled raid by security forces on a Maute hideout, which spiralled into chaos, with gunmen seizing bridges, roads and buildings and taking Christians hostage. Duterte responded by declaring martial law throughout his native island of Mindanao. Rohan Gunaratna, a Singapore-based security expert, said the siege was a wake-up call for the Philippines. “Islamic State capturing a major city in the Philippines is a very significant blow to the security and stability of this region,” he said. “The Filipinos need to get their act together ... They must understand the truth that IS ideology took hold in their country. The local groups have transformed.” Malaysians, Indonesians and other foreigners were among the guerrillas killed on Thursday, which the government said demonstrated how the Philippines could become a haven for overseas militants. The White House on Thursday said it backed the Philippine fight against “cowardly terrorists”.

Philippine intelligence indicates the two groups from different parts of Mindanao are connected, through Isnilon Hapilon, a leader of a radical faction of Abu Sayyaf. Abu Sayyaf has a track record of banditry, piracy and violence, while the lesser-known Maute group has proven itself a fierce battlefield opponent for the military, able to sustain air and artillery bombardments and regroup after heavy losses. Hapilon was the target of Tuesday’s botched raid and Duterte said Islamic State in the Middle East had anointed him as its man in the Philippines, and Hapilon was revered as its leader. Military chief General Eduardo Ano said the fierce resistance by the Maute in Marawi was to protect Hapilon, who was in poor condition after being wounded in a January air strike. “If we capture him, all the better. But if he fights back we have to do what is necessary,” he told reporters.

Chelsea seeks double, Arsenal looking for redemption Gattuso to return to AC Milan to coach youth team

MILaN, May 26 (ReuteRs): Former Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso is returning to AC Milan, where he spent most of his career, to coach the youth team, he said on Thursday. Famously combative, hard-working and hot-tempered in his playing days, the 39-year-old left his job as coach of Pisa earlier this month when they were relegated to the third tier of Italian football after one season in Serie B. "As far as I'm concerned, it's the right choice and not a step backwards," the 2006 World Cup winner told the Mediaset Premium television channel. "I'm returning to a great club that wants to be big again. I hope to transmit a sense of belonging and help the players improve."

"I will be in close contact with the first team because you have to play with the same idea and to have the same identity." Gattuso, who spent 13 seasons at Milan, led Pisa to promotion from the third tier in 2015/16 and said it was as good as winning the Champions League, which he did twice with Milan. He quit the club in August because of off-field problems but was persuaded to return one month later. Pisa continued to struggle behind the scenes during the season and were docked four points over late payment of tax and social security bills. Gattuso's has experienced mixed fortunes in his coaching career, although it has never been dull. He began at Swiss first division side Sion in 2013

but was sacked after three months, then joined Italian Serie B side Palermo where he was fired after six games. In 2014, he tried his luck with Greek Super League side OFI Crete who were beset by financial problems and, according to Gattuso, were "struggling to feed their players". He lasted six months, during which he gave an infamous expletive-ridden news conference in which he banged his fist on the table repeatedly and said, in broken English, that he expected his players to "play with balls" despite the problems. Gattuso said those experiences had changed him. "I have much more knowledge, I'm more mature and I go out there with a completely different mentality," he said.

LONDON, May 26 (aP): For Chelsea, it’s a chance for a double. Arsenal is just looking for some redemption. The London teams will meet Saturday in the FA Cup final, with Chelsea hoping to win its second league-cup double since 2010 and Arsenal wanting to make up for missing out on the Champions League with a season-ending trophy at Wembley Stadium. “It has been a great season,” Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said. “To be a fantastic season we have to win the FA Cup.” Chelsea, which will be making its seventh FA Cup final appearance since 2000, is favored to win the trophy for the eighth time. But a win for Arsenal would set a record for the club and manager Arsene Wenger. Arsenal has won the title 12 times, the same as Manchester United. Wenger has been at the helm for six of those triumphs and one more would see the Frenchman on his own with seven wins, surpassing the six won by Aston Villa manager George

Ramsay between 1887 and 1920. It could also be Wenger’s farewell. He is expected to announce soon whether he will stay on for next season. Wenger has faced criticism after a season in which the team finished outside the top four of the Premier League for the first time in 20 years. In keeping with brushing off questions about his future, Wenger said his only focus was Saturday’s final. “What I want is to win the next game,” Wenger said. “I love to win and I want to do well for my club. I want to win the cup for my club and that’s all I care about. It’s not about me, it’s about us winning the trophy and giving absolutely everything to achieve it.” HOLDING THE FORT Arsenal’s defensive crisis has given Wenger a major selection headache. The absence of suspended central defender Laurent Koscielny is a huge blow. Gabriel is injured and Shkodran

Mustafi is a doubt. “It’s absolutely unbelievable and unpredictable, and we have been hit hard in a position where we will need to be strong on Saturday,” Wenger said. “We’ll have to find solutions and hopefully I will find the good solutions.” Wenger is likely to use 21-year-old Rob Holding, who has made a good impression in his first season since signing from Bolton last year.

THIS SEASON Everything looked rosy for Arsenal when it routed Chelsea 3-0 at the Emirates back in September, during a run of nine wins from 11 matches in all competitions. Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil scored first-half goals. The way Arsenal tormented Chelsea’s backline that day prompted Conte to make a season-defining tactical defensive switch, adjusting to three at the back in a move that proved to be the catalyst for its title challenge. When the sides met again at

Stamford Bridge in early February, Chelsea outplayed Arsenal to win 3-1, getting goals from Marcus Alonso, Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas before the visitors netted a late consolation. ANOTHER TERRY FAREWELL? Long-serving Chelsea captain John Terry enjoyed an emotional farewell in his final home game last weekend, playing 26 minutes before being substituted in a contrived exit - 26 is his shirt number. Conte must decide whether to give his 36-year-old center back another moment in the spotlight at Wembley after making more than 700 appearances in 19 years at the club. Terry experienced his first FA Cup final as an unused substitute in Chelsea’s win over Aston Villa in 2000. He has since won the trophy four times - 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. He is the only member of the 2012 team that beat Liverpool in the final still at the club.

o society is flawless. It is the existence of problems that makes societies ‘a society.’ It is good to ruminate on aliments that afflict one’s society and how best to go about solving them. Yet, at the same time, it is also essential not to excessively dwell on the infirmities as these distract us from appreciating the basic essentialities of human existences: finding joy, happiness, meaning, and purpose to one’s life. Certainly, there are existential realities of life—such as earning a living to feed and provide shelter for one’s family, to provide education for the children, and, the most important of them all, to make ends meet—which we cannot disregard, especially in society such as ours. After all, everyone is, understandably so, absorbed in procuring security for oneself as well as for one’s own family. These realities exerting on us every day divert us away from refining our own humanity. That is cultivating one’s higher nature, such as kindness, selflessness, honesty, sympathy, compassion, understanding, virtuous, and so forth. Of course, this is not to say that we shouldn’t care about our family, children, and so on, but that, because we are so engrossed on our survival, we unintentionally overlook the task of refining our own character, which in reality is an essential aspect of personal and societal maturity. Hence, we constantly toil and aspire to attain status, accumulate wealth, travel to exotic destinations, dine at the high-end restaurants, and collect rare and expensive effects hoping all these attainments will result in us becoming more happy and content in our own personal lives. plest experiences and activities. We see these simplest occurrences as something ordinary, cheap, dull, and unremarkable. Hence, we think traveling to exotic places for vacations is always better than visiting one’s own back garden; that eating out at expensive restaurants is always better than the usual rice and vegetable dinner at home; that attending a concert is always better than spending quiet evenings at home; or that taking an adventure trip with group of friends is always better than spending time with one’s own family, who we see every day. We’ve begun to seek happiness and joy in such transient and fleeting events that we take many things for granted that are essential to leading a meaningful and content life. No doubt, as our society transitions into modernity, our lives and our happiness become contingent on us being able to satisfy such material desires. As such, the more we are enthralled in attaining such desires, centered on momentary material pleasure, the more difficult it becomes for us to realize joy and happiness in our own lives; and so we become more frustrated. In our quest to “Not Miss Out on Life,” we constantly seek to experience ‘the exciting,’ ‘the expensive,’ ‘the luxurious,’ and ‘the exotic.’ We feel disappointed and wail over the fact that we have “Missed Out on Life,” when in reality we actually haven’t. We feel less significant and even embarrassed that others have experienced such exciting occasions—such as travelling, dining at high-end restaurants, attending concerts, etc.—and, hence, we feel they must be happy; while we come to an erroneous conclusion that, until we experience and do the same things as others, we cannot be happy nor can we find any joy because we are missing out on so many things in life.

lections to the Nagaland Assembly are slated for February 2018 and the same drama played out on the eve of every such election has already begun, since June 2016, actually ~ albeit with a small difference. Normally, batches of people join and “support” the party in power basically because (1) the ruling party has the “maximum purchasing”, (2) a cursory look at the “support” the ruling party garners on the eve of Assembly elections indicate Nagas’ predilection to be on the winning side. However this time, there aren’t too many indications that the ruling party, the Naga People’s Front, leading the DAN Government, for almost fifteen years, is able to garner as much “support” and swell its ranks, as much as it would like to because of rifts within the party, and because the Centre hasn’t loosened the purse-strings. Well, with the BJP at the Centre, nothing is the same anymore in the Northeast, perhaps especially in the Northeast. But first thing first ~ with the impending Assembly elections, party time has begun in Nagaland with the launch of the Nagaland Congress (NLC) on June 21, 2016, by some former members of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), which commits “to provide suitable political platform, aspiring leadership and public participation toward preserving, protecting and promoting the inbuilt identity, au-

What has happened, and what is actually happening in our own Naga society, is that we have failed to appreciate and take for granted what is at hand, what is presently available to us. A life’s experience may indeed look very simple and trivial such as eating an apple, having long chats with one’s grandparents, playing with one’s nieces and nephews, taking a nap in a garden on a hot summer’s day, doing household chores, helping the needy, watching the geese float by the pond, or watching the clouds lazily amble along the sky; these activities may neither look exciting nor exhilarating, yet they are the source of some of life’s greatest joys and some of life’s most satisfying events. If duly reflected, these sorts of activities may be among the most satisfying moments we can experience in life because of their simplistic and modest nature that makes them freely and readily available to all. Hence, the maxim, “There is beauty in simplicity,” verily describes the significance of finding joy, happiness, serenity, and meaning in life’s simplest and inconspicuous moments. Finding meaning, happiness, and serenity in life can hardly be found in ephemeral events invariably increasing our endless needs to satisfy our equally limitless desires. This is why we put in a lot of effort in order to experience the exciting, the posh, and the affluent. We are let to a fallacious realization that we can only attain happiness if we follow the trend, the vogue: dine out at expensive restaurants, buy the latest vehicles, build a fashionable house, live in a posh neighborhood, travel to new and exotic destinations, wear branded clothes, and live a lifestyle as seen in advertisements and on television screens. We believe that we must live our life as a life lived by our ‘cool’ friends and relatives,

who are living an exciting and fun-filled life; otherwise, we feel that we truly cannot find happiness. We feel that we should follow the trends of others so as not to be left behind or missed out on life. We voluntarily pressure ourselves to like and do certain things and follow certain trends because everyone approves of them. While, at the same time, we do not pursue things we love because it is not approved by others. And, we think, because things we like are not in agreement with everyone, we must acquiesce to the prevailing trends approved by others. In trying to keep up with the trend we unconsciously become self-absorbed and selfish. In such conditions, who has time for self-cultivation of one’s nobler character? It is essential to recognize that we cannot wait for others to approve all the things we love and are enchanted by. We must allow ourselves to love and be enchanted by things that are charming and pleasant to us, in the simplest sense, even if these are not approved by other. We must follow our own liking and joy even though others may not approve of them. Remember, life’s greatest joy can neither be found in the “approval of others” nor in the lavish. Rather it is to be found in the simplest of life’s modest moments and unassuming activities. For it is only in these simplest moments that we experience the sublimity of life. And in experiencing the sublime, we realize the meaning to our lives and find happiness. In appreciating the simplest life experiences, we refine our character. We refine the nobler aspects of our own humanity, for the simplest life’s activities reveal some of our most profound idiosyncrasies. They help bare all that is human in us and express all that is required to cultivate

the foibles in our own character. Life’s modest activities elevate us high above the temporality of our parochial existence by unadulteratedly revealing some of the most profound truths about ourselves. These simplest activities divulge us valuable life lessons: for instance, having long chats with one’s grandparents teach us to be sympathetic and compassionate to the experiences of others; playing with one’s nieces and nephews instills in us important lessons on caring, patience, understanding, and unconditional love; taking a nap in a garden on a hot summer’s day makes us realize that to be alive is itself a fortune; doing household chores teach us the significance of sharing responsibilities and the virtues of love; helping the needy makes us realize not to complain about the problems in our own lives when there are people who are in worst situation than us; watching the geese float by the pond makes us realize how we unfairly discount much of nature’s beauty all around us; or watching the clouds lazily amble along the sky teaches us the importance of reflecting on our own lives and rectify the faults in our own character. These inconspicuous life’s activities aid us to make simplest of changes in our own character. This way, the simplest of changes not only refine our nobler aspects but also usher in a larger change in the society. Certainly, I am not suggesting that we shouldn’t care about the realities of life; rather despite our selfishness, our vengefulness, our corruptness, and our deceptive nature, we should continue to reflect on the simplest moments of life for they instill in us a realization of life’s sublimity with a clairvoyant insightfulness about the warmth and affectionate kindness which we all are capable of.

Residual Spray (IRS) of DDT Issued by National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP)

S

everal malaria cases are reported every year in Nagaland for which DDT spray operation is one of the most effective preventive measures carried out by National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP). This year also indoor DDT spray is being carried out. It has been observed that over the years, there has been resistance from the public to indoor DDT spray and non-compliance to technical guidelines. Therefore the following points are put forward to clarify why indoor DDT spray is carried out and why it is important to follow standard procedures: 1. Indoor DDT spray is found to be a very effective method to control mosquito population. Entomological studies show that mosquitoes in Nagaland are susceptible to DDT. IRS is therefore carried out in two rounds every year from midMarch to mid-August, i.e. during malaria transmission season. 2. DDT is the most cost-effective chemical for mass spray. There is no alternative cheap and effective chemical which can be used in a large scale. 3. Indoor DDT spray is safe as long as it is carried out as per standard spray procedures, carried out by trained personnel. 4. Spraying of DDT outside the house is counterproductive. It chases the mosquitoes inside the house. 5. Spraying of DDT outside can be injurious to health. DDT is a ‘hard’ insecticide which is slow to degrade and its residues persist in the soil for several years. As it passes up the food chain, concentration of DDT increases by a process called bio-magnification. 6. The government of India has approved use of DDT only for indoor spraying for disease vector control. Indiscriminate use of DDT for other reasons can amount to violation of The Environment Protection Act 1986, Section 8 which states that “No person shall handle or cause to be handled any hazardous substance except in accordance with such procedure and after complying with such safeguards as may be prescribed.” Indoor DDT spray not only protects against malaria but also against other mosquito borne diseases which are detected in Nagaland, like Japanese Encephalitis and Dengue. Therefore, it is an important method of disease prevention which requires acceptance and compliance by all for the common good.

In Nagaland, it’s party time again Monalisa Changkija

tonomy and welfare of Nagaland state by being ‘national in outlook and regional in content’”. NLC’s claimed objectives are “to provide transparency in governance and accountability to the public … to give all-round development and equal opportunities to the people of Nagaland”, …“to reform Nagaland, safeguard the rights of Nagas, to make it free from corruption and clean the electoral roll”, “strive for unification of all Naga inhabited areas under a single administrative unit, to protect the rights and privileges of minorities living in Nagaland … to promote and safeguard the traditions and rich cultural heritage of Nagas”, … “to support the Indo-Naga peace process for early settlement which should be acceptable to all sections of the people and it would respect the sentiments of every section of community and extend solidarity as and when needed”. On May 17 last, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was launched “In response to the feelings of the masses, who strongly desire for formation of a new political organization …” stated its emailed press release. The resolutions passed in its general meeting are pretty much as same as any other political party in Nagaland viz. “to strengthen the

peace process and contribute towards realization of early, honorable and wholesome resolution of the Naga political problem …”, “… strengthen the democratic principles at all levels of society and oppose corruption, violence and injustice”, “.. stand for transparency, strive for respect of human rights and dignity, protect freedom of speech and expression, work for upliftment of weaker and marginalized sections of society, uphold gender equality and endeavor to protect our rich cultural heritage”, “combat social evils and work towards a society that recognizes merit, promotes innovation, supports creativity and allows art to flourish … strive for emergence of the people’s voice, the realization of the people’s aspirations … reflect the desire and will of the masses” and “… be regional in spirit, national in outlook and act in accordance with global issues and concerns that include protection of the environment and responsible actions towards climate change” and opened its doors “for all those who aspire to work for the people and are willing to make efforts towards resolution of the political conflict and contribute towards bringing early and honorable politi-

cal solution in the greater interest of all sections of society”. A cursory look at the new parties’ objectives indicate bankruptcy of ideas of Nagaland’s political class, as all political parties here offer the same menu. And it’s doubtful if there really is “the feelings of the masses, who strongly desire for formation of a new political organization” ~ if there is, which “masses”, seeing that most people here are unimpressed with our political class, as reflected in local newspapers, social media and private conversations. The new parties also haven’t articulated road-maps to achieve their objectives, Besides, they were formed mainly by three categories of people – (a) the hasbeens of the Congress and NPF the electorate rejected hence have become redundant to the parties they belonged but are desperate for a come-back, (b) still very powerful politicos but sidelined by their parties and thirsting to drink from the well of power, and, (c) former retired government servants, who have seemingly amassed a sizeable amount of wealth and want a big bite of the political pie. But their potential to upset the NPF’s apple-cart cannot be discounted ~ (1) because of NPF’s incessant infighting due to its failure to discipline

its power and money-hungry elected members and its prioritization to hold on to power then on governance resulting in Nagaland’s under-development; (2) inability to make the Centre loosen the purse-strings, (3) allowing itself to be dictated and cowered down by muscle-flexing NGOs and civil societies, which have forced their imprint on governance here, (4) failure to infuse fresh blood in the party, (5) more focus on spreading it tentacles in neighbouring states than on issues plaguing Nagaland, ~ actually the list is quite endless but then the NPF of the last fifteen years comprises of quite a few runaways from the Congress Party since 2003. And then there is the BJP, which is making very inconspicuous but equally confident inroads into Nagaland, facilitated by the NPF’s alliance with it in the DAN coalition, which gave the BJP the foothold it needed into the inner sanctum of Nagaland’s political arena. Two, the BJP has the money, which makes muscle power more accessible. Three, possibly and probably at least one of the newly launched political parties here is the BJP’s handiwork, and/or if and when some from these two parties win, they look kindly towards the BJP seeing that the BJP is re-

portedly of the opinion that it doesn’t matter who wins the election but who forms the government ~ and we all know how governments are formed, at least in Nagaland. Then there are the non-state actors here, who have inexorably always dictated and decided over-ground politics, not least government formation. Unofficial electoral history indicates that over-ground politics is dependent on non-state actors to win elections and form the government. The incestuous relationship among over-ground, underground and middle-ground politics is a volume by itself, deserving dedicated research to understand Nagaland’s political history. Moreover, from past accounts, electoral victory and government formation here is inevitably dependent on money and muscle power ~ with few exceptions though. Who will win the elections and form the next government in Nagaland? Well, the Congress Party has marginalized itself so the fight is mainly between the NPF and the BJP but now with the entry of two new political parties, your guess is as good as mine. Still, because of the entry of the two new political parties, the BJP could have the upper hand ~ and it has been working hard to get the upper hand. Then there is the matter of the Chief Minister’s election by this August, which could change the entire electoral scenario impacting the next elections. The original incarnation was mostly a cover band that did just a couple of shows. They released two albums in the early 2000s that was mostly filled with cover songs by rock legends Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Scorpions. The band has since shortened its name to Fozzy. By early this decade, Fozzy flipped the covers and satirical spins and instead, attacked music with a more serious approach. Jericho, who once defeated Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin on the same night to win the WWE undisputed championship, scaled back his wrestling career and now shows up when breaks by the band allow him to hit the ring.

18-year old Thejangulie Mekro was recently selected for a nine months training at the Europe Basketball Academy (EBA), Barcelona after being discovered by the Academy through social media via Facebook and Instagram. The EBA is a leading Academy in Europe which aims to nurture young players and has produced notable Basketball players. “They asked me to send my videos through email,” recalls Mekro who received the invitation after the Academy saw his videos and skills. Mekro and another player from Hyderabad have been selected from India for training in the Academy. Donning Jersey No. 2 for The Mystic Ballers (TMB) – one of the leading Basketball teams in Kohima, Mekro has been playing for the team since he was in Class 8. The team consists of about 20 players, including Thejangulie who plays in his preferred Combo guard position – a position made prominent in the 1990s when players like Allen Iverson switched between playing point guard and shooting guard using their relatively small frame and athleticism to advantage. Because of his passion for the game, Mekro admits, “Sometimes I can’t concentrate on my studies because of Basketball.” “I play for almost six to eight hours in a day,” says Mekro who was introduced to Basketball when he was around seven years old by his elder brother. The two brothers now play alongside in the same team.

His mother Rüngubino Chasie, a retired government employee, and father Dr. Vizovol Mekro, a Professor in the department of Geology, KSC, has been supportive of his interest in Basketball, and in fact it is his parents who will be funding his expenses and training fees in the Academy. Having recently passed out in First Division (HSSLC) from Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, this young athlete aims to become a professional basketball player in future. Mekro believes that there is a future for Basketball in Kohima where people can earn their livelihood through this profession and says, “We have a lot of talented people here. They just need opportunities with coaching and better facilities.” Mekro will be joining the EBA at Barcelona on June 15, and hopes to give his best efforts to earn a scholarship. Spain is considered to have the best Basketball Academies in Europe which has produced notable players and placed several proleagues in Europe as well as globally.

Here they go again. For the third straight year, it’s Cleveland and Golden State in the NBA Finals. The 2016 champions versus the 2015 champions . The first “threematch” — rematch of a rematch — in league history. It’s the matchup most expected, the matchup most predicted, and probably the matchup the Cavaliers and Warriors wanted as well. Let the hype, and the waiting, begin: Game 1 isn’t until June 1. “I’ve been very blessed the last few years to be a part of this league and play on the big stage,” said Cleveland star LeBron James, who has now reached the Finals for the eighth time — including each of the last seven years. “But we’re going to enjoy this for a couple more days before we have to lock in on that juggernaut out west.” The Cavaliers and Warriors split their two meetings this season, both winning at home. Cleveland won by one on Christmas Day, Golden State prevailed by 35 on Jan. 16. Golden State led the league with 67 wins this season and is a staggering 27-1 in its last 28 games — including a perfect 12-0 in the Western Conference playoffs, the first time a team has gone this deep into an NBA postseason without losing. Cleveland, which seemed sleepy at times in the regular season, went 12-1 in the Eastern Conference playoffs that ended with a win over Boston on Thursday night. “Playing in this league, you can’t take

anything for granted,” Warriors guard Stephen Curry said. “Thirty teams suit up every year trying to get to this point, and only two teams do. So you have to appreciate it.” For James, the Finals are an annual rite. For Durant, this trip ends a five-year wait. Durant’s only other time in the Finals was 2012 when he was with Oklahoma City. The Thunder lost to Miami in five games, a series that made James a champion for the first time. At the very moment where the clock ran out in that series, the person James was embracing was Durant — telling the thenThunder star, his offseason workout partner at the time, how proud of him he was. “Hopefully,” James said that night, “I don’t continue to have to run into him.” They’ll collide again, starting next week. Durant’s decision to leave the Thunder for Golden State as a free agent last summer meant the Warriors went from mere overwhelming favorites to win the West again to super-duper-overwhelming favorites to win the West again. They got a big scare in late February when Durant had a left knee injury, but he’s back and the Warriors have rolled since. The storylines are many. Can James win his fourth ring? Can Durant win his first? Will the Warriors be haunted by letting last season’s 3-1 lead slip away? Will they become the first team in NBA history to go undefeated in a postseason?

The five five-day long free football coaching camp conducted by Nagaland Football Coaches Association (NFCA) concluded today at the Kohima Local Ground. Held on the theme “Make Football Happen”,

46 budding footballers in the age group of 6 to 12 years and Under-17 years underwent the coaching. Exhorting the upcoming footballers, NFCA President Roko Angami said even as the camp concluded, they should be maintaining regular practice. He however urged them that they should also give equal

importance towards their studies and not only play. He called upon them to maintain discipline not only in front of the coaches but they should respect the elders while also seeking their blessing to be successful. NFCA Technical Director William Koso along with 12 coaches with AIFF ‘D’ li-

cense conducted the training. He also informed that NFCA would also be conducting similar camps in other districts. The coaching camp in Kohima was the second such camp following the first which was held in Dimapur. Meritorious awards were also distributed to the campers.

WBA suspends judges after disputed N'Dam win Tokyo, May 26 (aFP): The World Boxing Association (WBA) has suspended two judges for six months after Frenchman Hassan N'Dam won the middleweight title on a split decision over Japan's Ryota Murata last weekend. N'Dam controversially took the vacant world title in Tokyo on Saturday despite being knocked down by the 2012 Olympic champion Murata and suffering heavy punishment for much of the fight. But WBA president Gilberto Mendoza, who has already ordered a rematch, told a press conference Thursday that Panama's Gustavo Padilla and Canadian Hubert Earle had been banned after studying their scorecards. "My scoring, as well as the scoring of five (independent) judges and the supervisor of the fight were different from that of Mr. Padilla and Earle," Mendoza was quoted on the

WBA's official website. "I had to address this case personally, and so I did it on Saturday night. However, we had to announce our decision on the judges after a closer evaluation." Padilla and Earle will have to pass tests before they can judge WBA-sanctioned fights again, the association added. Padilla scored the bout 116-111 to N'Dam while

Earle had it 115-112. American Raul Caiz scored it 117110 to Murata, who largely dominated the fight. After the shock result was declared, Mendoza tweeted: "Let me apologise to Ryota Murata. There are no words to repair the damage. I will demand the championship committee order a direct rematch." Murata floored N'Dam with a right hook in the fourth round and wobbled

him on several other occasions. N'Dam sank to his knees when the scores were announced as boos rang out from the Japanese crowd. Murata, hoping to become only Japan's second middleweight world champion, and first in 22 years, lost for the first time in 13 professional fights. N'Dam improved his record to 36-2.
