mi for more education, but only to those who swear allegiance to God,” explains Vechilu Rhakho (50), one of the 12 prayer warriors of Kütsapomi Naga Shisa Hoho, consisted of 10 women (including her) and two men. It was this that led to the nearly 70% of till-then unconverted citizens of Kütsapomi to convert to Christianity. Today, there are some government schools in the village and many are educated, but Kütsapomi’s 300-odd households lie miles away from any real development. It happens to be one of the first villages where Nagaland State’s Village Development Board (VDB) experiment was implemented. Kütsapomi draws its strength from the responsibility placed on it to bring the Naga people together. Firmly situated in community ethics, its people continue to pray and fast so that all Naga people will “do in obedience” to god (meaning of the word Shisa), thereby uniting and earning their sovereignty. “There is only one sovereignty. God will present the Naga people with a leader as soon as they come together,” prophesizes Chosayi, hopeful of a rightful place for the Nagas, and eventually, perhaps, Kütsapomi.

Tucked into the hilly folds of Phek district in Nagaland is Kütsapo village, or Kütsapomi, as it is referred to in Chokri and Sümi, the languages its inhabitants speak. International Workers’ Day also known as Labour Day was observed at Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) office premises in the presence of DC Dimapur Kesonyu Yhome, ADC Dimapur Elizabeth Ngully, DMC Administrator H. Atokhe Aye, Assistant Labour Commissioner Sashi Jamir, DAN Executive Officer Noleto Visa and other officials. The organizers took the opportunity of gathered workers to sensitize

them on the SVEEP campaign against migrant labourers and factory workers. Yhome highlighted about the eligibility criteria for voting and also the rights of the labourers. He said migrant workers from Assam who were commuting from Assam on daily basis were not eligible to vote. He also urged labourers to inform the BLO’s in case of death of certain family members who earlier had voting rights. Atokhe requested the DC Dimapur to work out schemes and other means

of assistance in the form of rations to the labourers. It was later learnt that the DC had agreed to look into the matter. Atokhe also spoke about the need for housing the labourers and reminded that the DMC had written letters to the appropriate authorities in this regard. Assistant Labour Commissioner, Sashi acknowledged the contributions of the labourers in various manual works. DC Dimapur later distributed caps to the workers during the programme chaired by ADC Dimapur, Elizabeth.

“Festivals apart, Nagaland state has also “too many” of teachers, government employees, politicians and contractors. We have too many teachers without conviction, which is destroying the education system; too many government employees without understanding the meaning of ‘work is worship’ as expected in a Christian welfare state,” observed Nagaland parliamentary secretary for School Education, Yitachu. Referring to the poor performance of government schools against the backdrop of the recently declared HSLC and HSSLC exam results, the parliamentary secretary said this is because most teachers do not have genuine concern to educate the children but are more interested in pursuing their own personal benefits including good postings and salary. “This is contrary to our belief and faith. How will our society progress in such an environment? How will our younger generation grow?” the parliamentary secretary asked.

Yitachu was speaking at the inaugural function of the newly upgraded Christian Mission Higher Secondary School, Diphupar, on Friday. Taking serious view of absentee teachers and the practice of appointing proxy teachers, Yitachu said in doing so, “we are trying to criminalize our education system…Schools should not be for employment only. Money cannot transform our society, only education can transform our society.” He also said that the Right to Education Act has only compounded problems

within the education system. The parliamentary secretary said the School Education Department is in the process of “rationalization” where schools which are not functioning properly or do not have enough students would be closed down while performing schools would be upgraded. Yitachu also informed his earlier assurance that the state government would provide Math and Science teachers to all private schools has not materialized so far due to numerous problems, which needed to be sorted first. Yitachu further noted that the state has “too many politicians without principles”, which is destroying good governance in a welfare state and “too many contractors without quality work.” Stating it was “heartbreaking” when one ponders on problems and issues confronting Naga society today, Yitachu however said nothing is too late to be corrected. “If we start today, then in another 50 years we will have an ideal society. But if we wait for our children to correct, it will taken a hundred years,” he added. Chairman, MHSS management board, SK Kenye and Diphupar Village Council chairman, I Vitoshe Kinimi, also spoke on the occasion. Principal, CMHSS, Imti Temsu Chakhesang, delivered the welcome address.

Set up in 1982, the 30-member TTAADC has 28 seats filled through direct election while two members are nominated by the government. Twenty-seven seats in the council are reserved for tribals. Argentina’s capital is world capital of bookstores

BueNoS aireS, May 1 (aP): All across Argentina’s capital, lodged between the steakhouses, ice cream shops and pizzerias, is an abundance of something that is becoming scarce in many nations: bookstores. From hole-in-the-wall joints with used copies of works by Jorge Luis Borges, Miguel de Cervantes and Gabriel Garcia Marquez to elegant buildings with the latest children’s books in several languages, Buenos Aires is filled with locales that pay homage to print. The city has more bookstores per capita than any other major city in the world, according to a recent study by the World Cities Cultural Forum, an organization that works to promote culture. With a population of 2.8 million

people within the city limits, there are 25 bookstores for every 100,000 people, putting Buenos Aires far above other world cities like London, Paris, Madrid, Moscow and New York. The closest is Hong Kong, which has 22 bookstores per 100,000 people. “Books represent us like the tango,” said Juan Pablo Marciani, manager of El Ateneo Gran Splendid, an immense bookstore in the affluent Recoleta neighborhood where 7,000 people visit each week. “We have a culture very rooted in print.” Behind the high number of bookstores, 734 by last count, is a combination of culture and economics. Culture boomed along with the economy in the early part of the 20th centu-

ry, and even if the economic path grew rocky, ordinary Argentines embraced and stuck to the habit of reading. To this day, many across the region call the Argentine capital the “Paris of Latin America” thanks to its architecture, wide streets and general interest in the arts, music and literature. During the Spanish civil war in the 1930s, many top writers and editors fled to Argentina, further cementing the country as a literary capital and powerhouse for printing. In 2014, there were 28,010 titles in circulation and 129 million books were printed in the country, according to the Argentine Book Chamber, making it one of the most prolific book printers in Latin America.

Many stores carry rare books that are hundreds of years old. At Libreria Alberto Casares, bookworms can gaze at a collection that includes a French translation of Spanish poet Garcilaso de la Vega from 1650 and Gregorian chants on papyrus dating back to 1722. In buses and subways, in parks and cafes and even in malls, it’s common to see people flipping pages of whodunits, histories and poetry, or most recently, new books about the mysterious death of prosecutor Alberto Nisman, a case that has rocked the country since he was found shot dead in his bathroom Jan. 18. “I was born with paper books and I’ll die with paper books,” said Aida Cardozo, 65, who was recently reading “Las Huel-

las del Rencor,” or “Traces of Resentment,” philosopher Santiago Kovadloff’s work on changes in Argentine society over the last 13 years. “Computers are for responding to emails and using Facebook, but not to read a novel,” she said. Books also receive help when it comes to staving off the digital deluge. There are no sales taxes on books, notable in a country where most products get 21 percent slapped on top of the sticker price. And heavy import taxes on books, and electronics such as ereaders, help keep the local printing industry strong. While Argentines are increasingly glued to their mobile devices, customers who want to use foreign retailers like Amazon have to pay a 35 percent surcharge

on their peso-denominated credit cards. The use of e-readers like the Kindle is still relatively low. Less than 10 percent of the 1.2 million people who attended the city’s annual book fair last year said they used electronic devices to read books, according to a fair survey. Ignacio Iraola, the Southern Cone editorial director for publishing house Grupo Planeta, said the economic factors make printed books an attractive business for bookstores and make books a popular gift in tight economic times. “A book costs 200 pesos ($23) compared to 400 pesos $46 for a shirt,” said Iraola. “And the perceived value of a book is much higher.”

The company marked the occasion with a noble cause of a blood donation drive dedicating the day to the service of the people in the region. Airtel employees and partners across offices in the region together donated 400 units of blood to Govt. medical college hospital blood banks, Govt. hospital blood banks and Red Cross Society blood banks. Saurabh Goel, CEO North East and Assam, Bharti Airtel, who also participated in the campaign said, “As a brand we always endeavor to enrich the lives of our customers. We wanted to extend this commitment to the larger society with the blood donation drive as we celebrate 10 years in the region. We hope that our small gesture will go a long way in creating awareness about blood donation in the society.” According to a recent WHO report, the estimated requirement of blood in India is about 12 million units while the total collection is close to 10 million units annually. The blood banks in North East and Assam especially are in constant need of fresh supply of blood. Airtel thus initiated this campaign to contribute towards driving away this shortage and helping those in need of blood transfusions. Camps were successfully organized simultaneously across 10 locations including Guwahati, Tezpur, Dibrugarh, Bongaigaon, Silchar, Agartala, Shillong, Aizwal, Imphal and Kohima with the help of the blood banks.

In Mumbai, non-subsidised cooking gas has been cut by Rs 4.50 to Rs 627.50, while it will cost Rs 649 in Kolkata as against Rs 654.50, previously. Chennai will see a price cut of Rs 5.50 to Rs 608.50 per cylinder. Rates vary from state-to-

The price of non-subsidised or marketpriced domestic cooking gas (LPG) was cut by Rs 5 to Rs 616 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi, state-owned fuel retailers said. The reduction comes on the back of 2 successive hikes – Rs 5 on March 1 and Rs 11 on April 1.

jet fuel, in Delhi by Rs 272 per kilolitre or 0.5 per cent to Rs 49,609.84 per kl. The increase comes on the back of a 2 per cent reduction in rates last year. Jet fuel constitutes over 40% of an airline’s operating costs and the price cut will reduce the financial burden on cashstrapped carriers. No immedi-

Free medical for in-laws helps Indian tech start-ups woo talent back MuMBai, May 1 (reuterS): After losing top engineering talent for years to America’s tech heartland of Silicon Valley, India is luring them back as an e-commerce boom sparks a thriving start-up culture, unprecedented pay, and perks including free healthcare for in-laws. India’s IT industry has long been seen as a back-office backwater, even by its own engineers who started moving abroad in their droves in the 1970s. That is now changing. The e-commerce sector, led by companies such as Flipkart and Snapdeal, attracted more than $5 billion of investment last year, Morgan Stanley says, compared with less than $2 billion in 2013. That growth is fuelling the hunt for talent to drive the next stage of expansion - for many, an initial public offering or a push into overseas markets. “The appetite for finding engineering talent ... is great,” said George Kaszacs of Silicon Valley-based headhunters Riviera Partners, who helps

Indian startups scout for potential hires. The number of returnees is small, but they represent a sign of the early emergence on the global stage of Indian upstarts. Indian companies such as Snapdeal, Inmobi and Zomato each say they have hired between a handful to as many as 20 people from Silicon Valley in the past 5 years. India’s biggest e-commerce company, Flipkart, recently hired two senior executives from Google Inc in California, both engineers of Indian origin, for its headquarters in Bengaluru. Flipkart did not disclose their pay, but headhunters say remuneration packages can reach $1 million over 3-4 years. Headhunter Kaszacs said several factors are drawing Indians back home, including the chance to join a fast-growing start-up. Joining bonuses, stock options and other perks were also helping. The chance to live close to parents and other relatives is another factor drawing Indi-

an executives back home - an important consideration in India’s close knit family system. For Tanmay Saksena, who heads online ordering at restaurant review website Zomato, similarities between the Indian and Silicon Valley start-up culture helped him decide to return after eight years away. “Of course your base pay is not the main driver, it is equity and you join a start-up because you think it will do well,” Saksena said. Other executives moved for similar reasons, saying the chance to work for a thriving start-up offset the challenges of everyday living in India’s chaotic cities. In return, companies are going all out to make settling back as easy as can be. InMobi, a mobile phone advertising platform, provides summer camps for kids and meetings where spouses can socialise with one another. It offers health insurance not just for employees and their spouse, but their in-laws too, which Abhay Singhal says is a big hit. “

Saturday

set a good example and it should be followed by all Nagas. sible for stalling the development and paralyzing the government for months. “As responsible leaders, we are truly sorry,” he said adding, everything will come normal within a week or two through the latest development of reconciliation within the party. Moatsu, or the sowing festival of the Ao community, is celebrated in the first week of May every year. It is the festival of thanksgiving to the traditional ‘Lijaba’ god, which was observed by the forefathers after the sowing season, and is still revered by the present generation. This year’s celebration at Mulongkimong, a historic village where the first American missionary Dr EW Clark set his foot in Naga country, was added with much pomp and gaiety because of the presence of the NEZCC director and a host of dignitaries from the government. The State of 2015's Summer Movies

H

The Atlantic

ollywood's summer almost always begins with a bang, then a scramble to maintain momentum. May 1 heralds the release of what is likely to be the industry's biggest earner of the season—Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron, the eleventh installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which some critics see as the spark igniting an inferno of reboots, sequels, and franchises that threatens to engulf modern moviemaking. The coming months will do little to quell those fears, but outside of the Avengers machine, there's no project in the works that feels like a truly safe bet, however big the budget or familiar the title. The success of the Marvel saga is, more than anything, its reliability—no matter who the hero on the poster is, the money always rolls in (last year's Guardians of the Galaxy, starring TV's Chris Pratt and based on a largely unknown comic, took $774 million worldwide). Every other studio is looking for that kind of cachet, and is throwing everything against the wall in the hope some of it sticks. Each summer brings its share of sequels and remakes, but there's an desperate air around many this year. Audiences haven't embraced franchises like Jurassic Park,Terminator, Mad Max, or Vacation in a generation, but Hollywood is betting that, despite their age, name recognition still rules. Nonetheless, May offers the best chance to en-

Marvel continues to crush in its efforts toward world domination, but there's cause for optimism amid the promising indie films in the mix joy that rarest of breeds: the auteur-made, original blockbuster that's neither adaptation nor spinoff. That's Brad Bird's Tomorrowland (May 22), a Disney production that remains shrouded in mystery weeks before its release. Trailers indicate the plot revolves around a magical sci-fi world that George Clooney and his young charge Britt Robertson can visit, but details have been kept mercifully brief in the moving teasers. Its unknown plot makes Tomorrowland more of a risk than most of the projects debuting this summer, but Bird's involvement should prove tempting. After directing three animated-feature classics—The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille—Bird's 2011 live-action debut was the balletic Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which compensated for its nonsensical plot with truly breathtaking action sequences. Tomorrowland promises more of the same, but grounded in Bird's original storytelling (co-written with the Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof ). The idea of a rebooted Mad Max (subtitled Fury Road, out May 15) seems far more groanworthy. But the singular

George Miller is still behind the wheel of the series 36 years after his first Mad Max; Mel Gibson is nowhere to be seen (replaced with Tom Hardy); and the trailers offer an eye-popping new vision of Miller's sand-swept desert apocalypse. Whether or not Warner Bros. was wise to sink $150 million into an R-rated dystopian car-chase, Fury Road at least stands out from the rest of May's offerings. It's hard to know who'd want a remake ofPoltergeist (May 22) considering the plethora of cheaper, more original horror films on offer today, but Fox has revived it anyway. The sequel Pitch Perfect 2(May 15) is nice to see even if simply because it's a major franchise targeted toward women. Meanwhile, The Rock will fly around in a helicopter rescuing earthquake victims in the ill-timed disaster flick San Andreas (May 29). The writer/director Cameron Crowe's latest effort to

rekindle his career is titledAloha (May 29) and boasts a charming cast (Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams) and setting (Hawaii), but it's been a worryingly long time since he connected with audiences (his last three features were Vanilla Sky, Elizabethtown, and We Bought a Zoo). In June comes a depressing pair of bro-y revivals: the big-screen debut of the HBO series Entourage (June 5) and Seth MacFarlane's Ted 2 (June 26), of which nothing more needs to be said. Even more trepidation accompanies the arrival ofJurassic World (June 12), the first Jurassic Park film in 14 years, but director Colin Trevorrow's approach has a depressing sameness to it. Chris Pratt has been brought in as the lead, and the familyfriendly horror of Steven Spielberg's original seems to have evolved, with the plot focusing on a genetically engineered super-di-

no rampaging through an open park. Such splendid destruction is easy to buy onscreen these days, but genuine suspense or originality remain much harder to manufacture, let alone a good script. Let's hope for the latter in June's two biggest comedies: Pixar's Inside Out (June 19) and Paul Feig's Spy (June 5), the director's latest collaboration with Melissa McCarthy, which won raves at South by Southwest. Feig's Bridesmaids and The Heat helped prove that women could be the target audience for a money-spinning blockbuster, but perhaps the biggest indicator that Hollywood is finally listening is the existence of Magic Mike XXL (July 1), a sequel that exists purely due to audience demand and feels as critic-proof as any superhero franchise entry. It's the one sure thing in a month ushered in by Paramount's Terminator: Genisys (July 1), from director Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World

). It's the latest re-seasoning of a series that hasn't really struck a chord with audiences since 1991, with a grizzled Arnold Schwarzenegger back as the visibly aged cyborg, but from the looks of the confused marketing, it exists only to clear up the franchise's muddled timeline, and thus open up a path for future sequels. Even Marvel's July entry, Ant-Man (July 17), feels like it's stumbling out of the blocks after losing original director Edgar Wright to "creative differences" last year. With a funnier tone and Paul Rudd as marquee idol, the movie feels like a smart direction for Marvel to pursue, but so far the action has looked a little flat, maybe because it's about a screw-up thief who fights crime by riding ants. The most promising comedy of the summer is due out the same week: Trainwreck(July 17), directed by Judd Apatow, stars Amy Schumer as a

commitment-phobe who falls in love with a nice guy (Bill Hader), and has received rapturous festival praise. Apatow has always thrived at identifying talent and letting it shine on the big screen—Schumer is hardly a discovery at this point, but she certainly seems primed for superstardom. There are too many hoary old properties getting revived to flesh out in detail, but along with Poltergeist, it's hard to imagine just who the audience is for films like Vacation (July 31, with Ed Helms in the Chevy Chase role), The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (August 14), or even a new Hitman (August 28), a video game spinoff whose 2007 debut was quickly forgotten. Fox's newest Fantastic Four(August 7) heralds a trend of ill-advised "grim and gritty" takes on comic books that are anything but—beware the Justice League onslaught that begins in 2016, which seems to be following the same path. Perhaps most jawdropping is Sony's Pixels (July 24), which sees a giant Pac-Man munching on cities while Adam Sandler screams in the background, and which no amount of arch selfawareness in the script could possibly forgive. Decrying studio laziness is never difficult, and the summer is always the easiest time of year to declare the sky is falling, but it's worth noting the amount of exciting independent and small-scale projects that will get significant releases in these months, coming off successful runs at Sundance, in Austin, or even on the

Internet. Andrew Bujalski's romantic comedy Results (May 29) warrants attention thanks to a magnetic lead performance from Cobie Smulders (who's right there with the Avengers battling Ultron the very same month). The Sundance winner Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (June 12) promises wellearned teenaged tears; the festival also produced the surprise hit Dope (June 19), a hip-hop-centered coming-of-age film. James Ponsoldt's The End of the Tour(July 31) will attract notice for Jason Segel's performance as the late literary legend David Foster Wallace, but hits hardest as a stunningly smart portrayal of the banalities and idiosyncrasies of clinical depression. Many of these smaller jewels will never get a wider release as a pixilated Pac-Man munches up theater space around the country, but video-ondemand means they can be seen faster, and more widely, than previous generations of filmgoers could ever have imagined. That's the most viable counter to the notion that Hollywood is awash in bombast—independent cinema has long existed, of course, but it's never been so accessible. As Age of Ultron rides roughshod over the box office and earns the billions it is basically due, remember that director Joss Whedon's previous film was Much Ado About Nothing—a micro-budgeted black-and-white delight filmed over 12 days at his Santa Monica home. As the traditional blockbuster swells ever bigger, so can the satellite industry around it.

Blind man, armless friend plant thousands of trees in China Bringing the outdoor indoor Associated Press

A

once-barren bank of the Ye river in central China now has 12,000 trees irrigated by a small canal, thanks to unlikely but dedicated gardeners: two friends, one blind and one without arms. For the past 13 years, the two have planted and watered cedar trees near their village in Hebei province in what originally was supposed to be a commercial venture but became a mission supported by local officials to improve the air in a region more famous for its stifling pollution than for its rolling hills. The story of Jia Wenqi, 53, with no arms, and his blind friend, Jia Haixia, 54, is one of perseverance, environmental awakening and of finding a path in a country where it is difficult for the disabled to find jobs. "This empty riverbank was only dry sand and pebbles. It was deserted for many years. For normal people, it was impossible to plant trees there," Wenqi said in an interview on the riverbank. "But as the saying goes: Nothing is impossible to a willing heart." Every morning Haixia grabs onto the empty sleeve of Wenqi, who leads the way to the riverbank and then carries Haixia on his back across the shallow Ye river to their plantation. Haixia climbs trees to prune them of branches to be used as cuttings to plant new trees, using his hands to feel for the branches. Wenqi digs holes for the cuttings, tucking a shovel between his cheek and shoulder to aim it and then using his foot to drive it into the ground. He also uses his feet to fetch water from the river with a bucket and

pour the water around the newly planted tree. "Just ask a normal person to work with his arms in his pockets, like Wenqi!" Haixia said. "We handicapped people have an endurance that normal people don't possess." The two childhood friends share a surname but are not closely related, though they both grew up in Yeli Village, part of the Hebei city of Shijiazhuang. Unable to find work, they started their venture in 2002 with the modest

goal of planting around 800 trees a year. But a drought devastated their first crop, and they have never made any money from the plantation. Instead they get by on modest government assistance for disabled people. However, they have stuck with the tree-planting and now feel they have a purpose: to improve the local environment. Their village is part of the industrial hub of Shijiazhuang city, which was China's third-worst-polluted city in a list by the

Environment Ministry earlier this year. Seven of the top 10 cities on that list were in Hebei province, a heavily industrial and coal-burning province. People with disabilities are at a substantial disadvantage in China, a highly competitive society where anti-discrimination laws and policies to encourage hiring of disabled people are not enforced. Their unemployment rates are well more than double that of non-disabled people, according to a 2013 report

by the International Labor Organization. Income levels for households with disabled people were less than half the average of other households, the report found. "We handicapped people often feel inferior. No one takes us seriously and we have to depend on ourselves," the blind man said, his eyes gazing aimlessly. Haixia lost his eyesight in a work accident in a stone quarry in 2000. Wenqi was electrocuted at the age of 3 and both arms were amputated. He performed for many years in a traveling troupe of disabled people in which he demonstrated calligraphy written with his feet. Several old photographs of his travels are pinned on the walls of his dusty room in the basement of a house he shares with his brother and sister-in-law. He left the troupe in 2001 to take care of his dying father. Wenqi said their tree venture's focus was initially commercial, not environmental. "Gradually, as the trees grew and by watching promotional programs on television, I learnt that planting trees can improve air quality and the whole environment. We grew trees, but we also grew our minds." Their village committee has given them nearly 7 hectares to plant the trees, and the local forestry bureau has chipped in with some tree seedlings. "Our tree planting may not have much substantial benefit for the present generation, but it leaves a green environment to the next one," Haixi said. "We are physically disabled but mentally healthy. We have this big dream in our heart to leave a stretch of green to our children."

t is summer when it is not raining that is. And home gardens are flourishing. Whether it is a money plant framing the kitchen window, chalkboard pots hanging in the patio, repurposed metal tins to hold flowering plants on the balcony railing, or colourful metal planters mounted on the wall, bringing nature into one’s living space has never been cooler. According to Reena Chengappa, co-founder and director of My Sunny Balcony, “The increasing gardening trend the world over is to grow as much food as possible. Early summer is the best for this, with a variety of greens, spinach, coriander and other herbs coming up very easily. Summer is also the season for tomatoes and brinjals. Another trend is to go colourful with bright planters and accessories in metal, terracotta and other media.” “Trendy and attractive space savers are the order of the day,” finds Tanya Brar, proprietor of Chulbuli Balcony. “They could be metal railing planters which can be hung directly from balcony/terrace railings - they

not only give you space below them to be utilised for other things but they also spruce up the area.” “Get an indoor plant and place it where it gets some indirect light, for a window or a brightly lit source. Use recycled plastic bottles to make pots that you can hang up on your window sills or balconies and house plants in,” Reena says. “Flowering plants include jasmines, adenium, marigold, portulaca, dianthus, petunia and water lilies. Vegetables such as spinach, amaranthus, brinjal, tomatoes and beans. Shade plants such as ferns, syngonium, money plant and palms are perfect for the summer.” Tanya says: “Add pebbles in pots to retain moisture or spread dry grass clippings. Add as much colour as much as possible. Paint your dull terracotta base pots, add beautiful metal garden hook and lanterns.” For our feathered friends, gardening enthusiast Rani Mathew, says: “You can buy an inexpensive birdbath, paint it in bright colours, fill it with water, and leave it on your balcony. There are also metal variants available in

the market that can be suspended.” DIY lovers can also experiment with different looks for their home garden. Use old light bulbs as planters for your balcony. Mason jar lanterns are the perfect way to light up a home garden. Convert an old wooden ladder into a plant holder. Old windowpanes can also be utilised for the purpose. Birdcages can be used either as planters or as a source of light. Just wind fairy lights around them and bring in that vintage charm. Hanging terrariums are a great way to lift the look of your mini-garden. “Install a self-circulating water feature in a corner of your garden to bring in the sound of water. Hang up wind chimes, beads, little trinkets and knick-knacks to give your garden a fairytale feel. Hanging tyres and mirrors are also great to accessorise your garden. Put in a little garden bench or coffee table in a corner where you can enjoy your garden in peace with a cup of tea,” says Reena. Experiment, after all there’s so much more than silver bells and cockle shells to make your garden grow!

Dattatreya announced in early April that the government planned to introduce amendments to the Child Labour Prohibition Act in the current session

of Parliament. His ministry, while seeking the amendments, said the Act will not apply to children helping families in home-based work, and especially families working in agriculture and animal-rearing. The objective of these amendments, according to ministry officials, is to help children nurture a spirit of entrepreneurship. They will particularly help children of families currently living at subsistence levels, the ministry claims. Child rights activists say the move will benefit factory owners in the cow belt. Their profits will escalate fourfold as children could be made to work longer hours and paid less than adults. Social jurist and Su-

preme Court advocate Ashok Aggarwal describes the proposed amendments as unconstitutional. “They are going against the recommendations of the

parliamentary subcommittee that barred children from helping parents even in domestic chores,” Aggarwal said. Enakshi Ganguly Thukral of HAQ Centre for Child Rights believes this is an attempt by the Modi government to ensure a sizeable chunk of the population remains in the informal sector, deprived of minimum wages and social security. “The government is not in a position to provide jobs for millions of young people,” said Thukral. “Such a retrograde step will help ensure millions of kids remain illiterate and therefore unemployable.” Bad old days again Major cutbacks in the 2015 budget in the areas of

health, women and children, and education will further compound this problem. Thukral says labour officials are already guilty of under-reporting child labour. “But once child labour is permitted under one guise or the other, then even a minimum [level] of accountability will cease to exist,” she said. Labour officials at the district level are empowered to file cases against employers hiring children but few employers are ever convicted. Statistics from the Ministry of Labour for 2004-2014 show that there have been 1,168 convictions for children employed in hazardous industries with about Rs 83 lakh collected in fines. This money has been designated for the rehabilitation and welfare of child labour. However, in this period, only Rs 5 lakh was disbursed from this fund. Khan recalls the period before the RTE Act, when touts and dalals openly knocked on the doors of rich seths to sell trafficked children. “In the ’80s, kids were being paid a daily wage of as little as Rs 4 per day,” he said. “We kept up pressure on the government, insisting that all outof-school kids be categorised as child labour. This open trafficking of kids declined sharply with the RTE Act. If the BJP succeeds in introducing such a dangerous amendment, we will be back to those old days.”

Wearing a suit makes people think differently Jow Pinsker

ome psychology research in recent years is making an old aphorism look like an incomplete thought: Clothes make the man… Yes? Go on? Clothes, it appears, make the man perceive the world differently. A new study looks specifically at how formal attire changes people's thought processes. “Putting on formal clothes makes us feel powerful, and that changes the basic way we see the world,” says Abraham Rutchick, an author of the study and a professor of psychology at California State University, Northridge. Rutchick and his co-authors found that wearing clothing that’s more formal than usual makes people think more broadly and holistically, rather than narrowly and about fine-grained details. In psychological parlance, wearing a suit encourages people to use abstract processing more readily than concrete processing. Research on the effects of clothing on cognition remains in its early stages. Another similar study showed that when subjects wore a white coat that they believed belonged to a doctor, they became more attentive, an effect that didn’t hold when they believed the garment was a paint-

"T

er’s. But clothing’s psychological effects have been specified for only a couple of the ways the brain makes sense of stimuli. That said, at work, when some have to wear suits, there are some specific implications when attire flicks on abstract processing. “If you get a stinging piece of critical feedback at work, if you think about it with a concrete processing style, it's more likely to negatively impact your self-esteem,” says Michael Slepian, another one of the paper’s authors and a professor of management at Columbia Business School. Slepian added that thinking about money with an abstract processing style might lead one to skip impulsive purchases in favor of smarter, long-term savings behaviors. The researchers arrived at their finding after a series of experiments. The first two had student participants show up without any sartorial instructions, rate the formality of the outfit they happened to be wearing, and then take some tried-and-true cognitive tests to determine their processing styles. In these tests, selfrated formality correlated with the favoring of abstract processing. But since, in the words of the researchers, “the students on this campus tend to dress casually,” explicit instructions to come to

the lab with formalwear were required to get students to not show up with sweatpants alone. When subjects who changed into “clothing you would wear in a job interview” took similar cognitive tests, they demonstrated more abstract processing than the group that sported “clothing you would wear to class.” That was a result that allowed the researchers to arrive at a causal link. Does the effect Rutchick, Slepian, and their colleagues found matter just as much for everyday suit-wearers as more sporadic ones? “No matter how often you wear formal clothing, if you are wearing formal clothing, then you are likely in a context that's not the intimate, comfortable, and more socially close setting with no dress code,” says Slepian. “Thus, whether you wear formal clothing every workday, or only every wedding, my prediction is that we would find a similar influence because the clothing still feels formal in both situations.” As casual attire becomes the norm in a growing number of workplaces, it would seem that the symbolic power of the suit will erode in coming years. Slepian thinks the opposite. “You could even predict the effect could get stronger if formal clothing is only reserved for the most formal of

situations,” he says. “It takes a long time for symbols and our agreed interpretations of those symbols to change, and I wouldn't expect the suit as a symbol of power to be leaving us anytime soon.” Meanwhile, no formal research exists— just anecdotal observations—on how the world appears different when wearing a black turtleneck and jeans.

The deaths seem to have come in quick succession, and with each bereavement their places are left empty, and the society where they filled a beautiful role is impoverished by their going. Many of them were the carriers of our oral history, carrying the histories that did not find the opportunity to be written down for a long period. They were part of a particular period of our history – the Second World War and the years directly before that. They were old enough to remember the incidents around that time, and recollect in clear details the Japanese invasion, the bombing of Kohima and the

evacuation of Kohima town and the villages around Kohima. They lived history. I have often wondered if it was their experiences of the hardships of war that gave them the strength of character so distinctive about people from their era. Theirs was the courtesy

of the old world. They made time to visit each other and acquaint themselves with the lives of their dear ones. There was a welcoming spirit in their homes for visitors which our busy homes of today are losing. They had grace and were willing to share it with others. You

never went away from their homes without sharing a meal, a cup of tea, a prayer. All of them were excellent cooks and bakers. Ami Chanbemo made some of the best cakes in the sixties and seventies in Kohima. The ladies had recipes that were worthy of many cookbooks. The sharing of meals was as sacred and as beautiful as the breaking of bread together. A meal was like shared sacrament. In their unhurried worlds, they took the leisure to love God and their fellow men. They were our storytellers; their individual stories were books on our society. As they gently leave us one after another, I am saddened not just by my indi-

Into the past future present award :) CONGRATULATIONS to all the citizens of Nagaland. Nagaland has been awarded the best Administered and Developing Territory in the World under the prestigious LOTWC platinum award. Kindly bear with me. Awards have been given under the below category:1. Ministry of Road and Bridges- “The best Test Drive roads for Vehicle Durability Test” 2. Ministry of Power- “Excellence in Load shedding and crucial decision making on when to provide Electricity”. 3. Ministry of Higher Education, SEC (The State Education Committee) – “Zero Tolerance on educating the younger generation on their own history”. 4. Ministry of Public Health- “Ignorance on how to Run it.” 5. Ministry of Rural Development- “For Redefining the concept of development” 6. State Vigilance Commission/Anti Corruption Dept. - “Golden Award for the most inactive body” Interviewer (Narola): Before we begin, I just want to express how grateful I am for giving me this opportunity to interview all of you, respected Ministers for the award that has been showered upon the people of Nagaland due to your hard work. My first question to the one and only show stopper Sir.xyz Chief Minister of Nagaland. Sir, how were you able to find such capable leaders to work under you for the betterment of the people, I am sure it must have been a hefty task. CM: (**hemmm!! Clears the throat**) Well, as you said it, it was indeed a back breaking task for me to choose and find such hard working and capable leaders to lead the people into a new Age of Ultron…hehe sorry, just watched the pirated copy of Avengers age of Ultron, tongue slip. As I was saying it was indeed a big task but eventually I had to find the candidate who had spent more money during the election and obviously someone who does not understand the idea of Development and what corruption is, that is a must required quality. The rest is all team work. Our predecessors have set a very high benchmark of corruption which my team does not understand and we are working day and night to make sure we cross the benchmark and set an even more higher benchmark for the next group of leaders. Interviewer: Umm..mm Thanks? My next question is to Sir. xyz Minister of Road and Bridges. Sir, your team has been awarded “The Best Test Drive Roads for Vehicle Durability Test”, how does it make you feel? What is the secret behind this achievement? Minister of Road and Bridges: Ahh! Hard work and dedication, as simple as that. We tend to give importance on the quality rather than quantity. For that we choose those incompetent contractors to build the roads that last only one rainy reason and they do an excellent job and the good thing is that we do not even check what kind of road they have made. In order to maintain the quality we do not repair roads for years after years, some of the roads are not repaired since the Britisher’s left, keeping in mind the need to provide quality. Another secret is to let the public repair the roads even when we are there, that’s the secret, we get sanctions for roads, bridges, highways etc but we let the public waste their money and repair the roads themselves. Sometimes I wonder why do we even have employees in our department. Interviewer: Interesting, moving on Sir. Xyz Minister of Power Dept. tell us something on your award of excellence. Minister of Power: Load shedding is fun (**giggles**) we like hearing people shout on top of their lungs during Football World cup season, Miss World etc it’s just so fun to do it during that time apart from the other normal 365 days of the year load shedding (**giggles again**). Besides that, our top department analysts have identified that Hornbill festival is more important compared to Students examination. During the Hornbill festival we provide 24/7 electricity and during crucial examinations which is just two or three months after Hornbill festival we continue with the load shedding. We've inverters at home so no worries for us. Interviewer: (**giggles**) You also na..very funny ho. Next question to Sir.xyz Minister of Higher Education. What is it like to receive the award of “Zero Tolerance on educating the younger generation on their own history”? Minister of Higher Education: I am deeply humbled, it’s like a dream come true, at last all our predecessors work and our continuo’s effort to make sure none of the younger generation knows of our genuine history has finally paid off. We have been implementing this strict procedure since a very very very long time and that is the reason why we are standing here. Even if we have MBA, MA degreed employees in our department and in our Committee, none of those educated members have even tried to mention that there is a need to impart our History to our younger generation. We thank them for their support. What is the importance of knowing who AZ Phizo is, what were Nagas like in the past, how many tribes, Freedom struggle, 14th of Aug Independence declaration etc etc and so many other things. We are better off feeding foreign histories to our younger generation. Trust me, I am an expert. Interviewer: Umm...mm if you say so. Moving on Sir.xyz Minister of public health, what is your take on the award? Minister of public health: What public health? (**secretary whispers something into his ear**) ohh!!... Public health? Acha acha well we've Naga Hospital Kohima where all the people regardless of distance can come and avail the services, we've state of the art equipment, just make sure that during post mortem of unfortunate victims you don't visit the post mortem building hehe... After all these years Naga Hospital is the best we can offer for all the districts. Besides who has time to check whether district hospital Nurses and Doctors are present right? Visit Naga Hospital Kohima problem solved.

An era passing away

he page has turned on a whole era," was a friend’s moving remark on the passing away of a dear senior relative. The remark was very true. It had begun some years ago, but we didn’t mark it so closely until the older ones were taken from our midst one by one. In the last few years, a great number of people from this passing era have left us rather suddenly. They were people like Uncle Benwati, Azuo Viüzonuo Zopianga, Apfo Khrieü Sekhose, Ami Bao Peseyie, Ami Deo Solo, Apfu Sovizo Iralu, Dr K.Tseikhanuo, Dr Khrielieü Kire and very recently Apfo Rano Shaiza and Azuo Khrielieviü O’Leary. In the first week of December 2014, Ami Chanbemo Mozhüi suddenly died. He was active

vidual loss but by the larger loss of our society. We are losing an era with its own inimitable elegance. The spirit of their generation was more accepting of others, more forgiving of human faults. Great values for us to imitate and acquire. The ones who still remain with us are infinitely precious as we are made acutely aware that time is running out for our senior citizens. Let us honour them as they deserve to be honoured. It may not be possible to recapture the charm of the age they exemplified; but we can infuse our own era with a few things borrowed from theirs. Caring for each other and showing it, graciousness both at home and on the streets, and putting value back into human beings. An era is closing. May it not go by in vain.

Interviewer: A bit harsh eh? Sir. Xyz Minister of Rural Development your comments? Minister of Rural Development: Development is a very complex thing to tackle in rural areas especially when we are distributing the chairs, foods, and other centre sponsored materials to our family members, employees, relatives, neighbors. The world is a tough place to live in you know. It’s survival of the fittest and by that I mean in any possible way. We thank the central government for giving those items to our family members, relatives, employees neighbors etc. We try our best and make sure that only a drop from the ocean of materials and other items under the Rural Development program reach the rural areas, due to the complexity of development in Rural areas and I assure you none of the beneficiaries (who are not supposed to get) are ashamed of it and we are very proud of it. Interviewer: I am so blessed to hear that. Lastly, Sir. Xyz Vigilance Commissioner of State vigilance Commission, what is your take on your award? Commissioner: And who is going to be vigilant of us? (** all the Ministers starts laughing**) No further comment. Interviewer: hehe (**giggles**) tui khan be na. My sincere gratitude for the time and appreciation to all the awardees and departments, may you continue to carry on the good work. Here, don’t forget to take your LOTWC (Leaders on the Wrong Chair) award. With cameraman Botoka, this is Narola reporting live from xyz News Room, a News Station, Nagaland is yet to get. India slams US govt panel report on religious freedom

New Delhi, May 1 (iaNS): India has slammed a US government panel report that claims direct link between the 2014 general elections in India and the spike in attacks on religious minorities in the country. The report said since the 2014 elections, religious minority communities in India have been "subject to derogatory comments by politicians linked to the ruling BJP" as well as "numerous violent attacks and forced conversions by Hindu nationalist groups, such as RSS and VHP". External affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, "Our attention has been drawn to a report of the USCIRF which has passed judgement on religious freedom in India. The report appears to be based on limited understanding of India, its constitution and its society." "We take no cognizance of the report," he said. The US Commission

on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) released its 2015 Annual Report on April 30. USCIRF is an "independent, bipartisan US federal government commission, the first of its kind in the world, dedicated to defending the universal right to freedom of religion or belief abroad," the website says. "USCIRF reviews the facts and circumstances of religious freedom violations and makes policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and Congress. USCIRF Commissioners are appointed by the president and the Congressional leadership of both political parties," says the website. The annual report, which devoted five pages to India, has recommended that India along with 10 countries be placed as Tier 2 countries as "those countries whose governments engage in or tolerate at least one of the elements of the 'system-

atic, ongoing, and egregious' standard, but do not fully meet the CPC standard." CPC stands for "Countries of Particular Concern" -- defined under law as countries where particularly severe violations of religious freedom are tolerated or perpetrated: Central African Republic, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, and Vietnam. The eight Tier 2 countries are: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Russia, and Turkey. Other countries monitored include Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Cyprus, Kyrgyzstan, and Sri Lanka. The report, which devotes a section to "Hindu Nationalist Groups and Forced Conversions", mentions the proposed "Ghar Wapsi" plan of RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat on Christmas Day last year as well as the other reported incidents of "ghar wapsi" (re-

co0nversions) by Hindu rightwing groups. On the anti-conversion law passed by some states, it claims the law is "one-sided" and is "only concerned about conversions away from Hinduism but not towards Hinduism". It says: "Observers note they create a hostile, and on occasion violent, environment for religious minority communities because they do not require any evidence to support accusations." The report also notes US President Barack Obama's comments on religious freedom in India, including during his visit to India in January and during the US National Prayer Breakfast address in February. Obama in his town hall event in New Delhi had "underscored the importance of religious freedom to India's success", urging the country to not be "splintered along the lines of religious faith". Among its six recommendations to the US gov-

ernment are: "Integrate concern for religious freedom into bilateral contacts with India, including the framework of future Strategic Dialogues, at both the federal and provincial level"; "Increase the US embassy's attention to issues of religious freedom and related human rights, including through visits by the Ambassador and other officials to areas where communal and religiously-motivated violence has occurred or is likely to occur and meetings with religious communities, local governmental leaders, and police; "Urge the central Indian government to press states that have adopted anti-conversion laws to repeal or amend them to conform with internationally-recognized human rights standards"; "Urge the Indian government to publicly rebuke government officials and religious leaders that make derogatory statements about religious communities."

Ensure dignity of labour to those who toiled to build India: Rahul New Delhi, May 1 (iaNS): Paying tribute to the working class on May Day, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday called for ensuring dignity of labour to those whose "hard work and sweat" contributed to the building of the nation. "Today we pay tribute to the millions of workers whose hard work, sweat and tears have gone into building our nation," he said in a message on International Labour Day. "No country can aspire to greatness without ensuring that the people who build the nation are partners in its prosperity and success."

Those who work in our factories, in our fields, at our construction sites, in our mines and in enterprises, big and small, across our country should be assured dignity of labour and a decent quality of life, he added. Gandhi said that the children of the working class should also have every opportunity to choose the life they want to live. He called for renewing the resolve to "strive for an India in which every citizen rich or poor, farmer and labourer, irrespective of the circumstance of their birth can hold their head high and live and work with dignity and honour".

The tremors in Andaman region come within a week of the massive quake that hit Nepal and some parts of India on April 25.

Ramdev medicine issue’

Black money: 121 cases filed against HSBC's Geneva account holders

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev displays a packet of Ayurvedic medicine called “Putrajeevak Beej”, which is produced by Patanjali New Delhi, May 1 (iaNS): The Income Tax de- Ayurveda Kendra, part of a trust established by him in New Delhi partment has filed 121 cases of prosecution against on Friday, May 1. Ramdev said that the name given to the prodthose entities whose names have appeared in the uct is according to the scientific name of the main ingredient, HSBC Geneva bank list, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley “Putranjiva roxburghii” whereas opposition members claim that the medicine was being sold promising a male child as the literal said on Friday. "If I understand correctly, the assessment of 100 of translation of Putrajeevak Beej is “Seed that gives life to a son”, those cases has been completed and 121 prosecutions terming it as illegal and unconstitutional and seeking stringent have been filed by the tax department against those actions against the manufacturers. who were caught with the accounts abroad," he said here, addressing the foundation day of the Enforcement Directorate. A senior official told IANS here in this regard that a report in the matter has also been sent to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is now compiling all the figures and data to present an action report before the Supreme Court on or before May 12. The 121 cases were filed before the March 31 deadline after which these cases would have become timebarred and thus could not be prosecuted by the department. Jaitley, who said he would move the Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets (Imposition of New Tax) Bill, 2015, in Lok Sabha next week, recently said the government had completed an assessment of 350 foreign accounts and tax evasion proceedings had been initiated against 60 account holders. This move followed the Supreme Court last year giving a list of 628 entities in the HSBC Geneva branch, that was furnished to it in a sealed envelope by the central government, to the SIT constituted in May last year. India has no official estimate of illegal money stashed away overseas, but the unofficial assessments put it somewhere in between $466 billion and $1.4 trillion.

New Delhi, May 1 (PTi): A day after opposition MPs demanded a ban on a medicine from his pharmacy, yoga guru Ramdev on Friday rebutted allegations that it was being sold for conceiving a male child and claimed that he was being targeted through "lies" to defame the Prime Minister. However, he said a disclaimer will be added on the package of the medicine 'Putrajeevak Beej' that it does not promise a male child and claimed it is named so after the scientific name of the herb 'Putranjiva roxburghii Wall'. "MPs who have no clue about Ayurveda should be ashamed and should apologise to the nation. The

medicine (pack) does not say anywhere that it helps in producing a son," he told a press conference in New Delhi, and demanded an apology from JD(U) MP KC Tyagi, who raised the issue in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, accusing him of resorting to "lies". The yoga guru, who has courted several controversies in the past, also took a jibe at Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan saying she was demanding a ban on his pharmacy products as she was "not getting any opportunity to act in movies these days". "The name has simply been derived from its scientific name 'Putranjiva roxburghii Wall' and has got nothing to do with the

KolKaTa, May 1 (PTi): Amid a controversy over an ayurvedic medicine being sold by Ramdev's pharmacy that allegedly promised a male child, Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan today said the Union Health minister has already assured opposition MPs that the matter will be looked into. "It is a gender issue. If you are asking for only a male child, it is illegal. The health minister (J P Nadda) has said that the matter will be looked into," he said here today while reacting to the uproar in the Rajya Sabha yesterday over 'Divya Putrajeevak Beej' sold by Divya Pharmacy. "However, you cannot bring this (product) under misleading advertisement," he said. Without elaborating whether his ministry is taking any action on the medicine at a time when the NDA government was carrying out its 'Beti Bachhao' campaign, Paswan said if a product did not deliver what it promises, only then can it be misleading. The opposition had demanded a ban on the ayurvedic product in Rajya Sabha yesterday and sought stringent action against the manufacturers. promise of a son. Lying in the Parliament is a national crime," he said. Calling himself a "fakir" (ascetic), Ramdev, who had openly supported Narendra Modi's prime ministerial campaign, repeatedly invoked the Prime Minister's name and said not only he but the PM was being "unfairly" targeted through these "falsehoods". "On one hand there is the fakir and on the other hand there is the wazir. It's being said that when the Prime Minister is saying 'Beti Bachao', his closest man is saying 'Beta Badhao'. Essentially insult the fakir and and tarnish the wazir's name is the method," he said.

According to Ramdev, the opposition was latching onto every issue to target Modi, who, he said was focusing on developing the manufacturing sector as well agriculture. "While Modi is trying to find a balance between the two, the Opposition wants him to fail on both the fronts. He should be given time," he said, evading a direct reply on the Land Acquisition Bill. On Thursday, opposition MPs led by KC Tyagi in the Rajya Sabha demanded a ban on the product and had sought stringent action against the manufacturer. Ramdev was recently made Haryana's brand ambassador by the BJP government there.

ChaNDigarh, May 1 (iaNS): Silent for nearly two days after a teenaged girl was killed after being thrown out of a bus owned by him, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday finally admitted that the bus service was run by his company. According to reports, the victim's family was refusing to cremate her body till action was taken in the matter. Expressing his "deepest sorrow and outrage" over the Moga bus tragedy, in which 13-year old Arshdeep was killed after being pushed out of the speeding vehicle by her molesters, Sukhbir said: "I am with the grieving family in their hour of extreme sorrow and want to assure them that those responsible for bringing this tragedy upon them would be given exemplary punishment under the law of the land." The victim's mother, Shinder Kaur, 36, who was also pushed out of the bus, was admitted to a government hospital with serious injuries. In a statement here, Sukhbir Badal, who also holds the home portfolio, said: "I am personally and deeply anguished over the incident, more so because of the bus in which it happened." Referring to his ownership of the company, he said: "The fact only adds to our responsibility. It is absurd to even think that the incident of such brutality and brazenness to go unpunished because of the company's ownership." Sukhbir Badal and his wife and union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal own the Orbit Aviation Company to which the bus belonged. The opposition Congress had on Thursday demanded that a case be registered against Sukhbir Badal and his family members who were owners of the company. The incident took place Wednesday evening near Moga town, 180 km from here. Shinder Kaur said that they complained about the molestation to the bus driver but he mocked at them and started speeding the vehicle. She said that no one helped them inside the bus and alleged that she and her daughter were pushed out of the moving bus by the molesters. The family of three, including a 14-year-old boy, had boarded the bus at Moga town for Baghapurana town, which is 20 km away, on Wednesday evening. The mother and daughter were soon targeted with indecent gestures and molestation. Reacting to the incident, which has left the Punjab government, the ruling Akali Dal and the Badal family embarrassed, the Punjab government on Friday set up a high level committee headed by Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal to suggest ways to ensure safety and security of commuters in public transport. Sukhbir Badal, said he would allow police to complete its investigation into the matter independently.

FDA orders FIR against Snapdeal.com top brass India lags emerging world in MuMbai, May 1 (iaNS): The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has ordered the filing of a first information report (FIR) against e-commerce major Snapdeal.com's CEO, directors and distributors on charges of selling prescription drugs online, a top official said here on Friday. FDA Commissioner Harshadeep Kamble said that the action follows raids and investigations against Snapdeal.com over the past two weeks. "Despite a written assurance from the company, it was found that Snapdeal. com continued to offer, exhibit and sell drugs like I-Pill, Unwanted-72, emergency contraceptives and other drugs through their website. We ordered these drugs online and received them on April 24," Kamble told IANS. When contacted, a spokesperson for Snapdeal. com in New Delhi claimed it had "already delisted the products and said sellers,

and also stopped payment, in addition to providing all information to the FDA team as required". The company reiterated it invests significantly in educating sellers on engaging in fair and safe sales on the platform and consequences of selling inappropriate products, at times sellers end up listing such products. "Upon being notified of any such products, we delist the products and take appropriate action against such seller,” the spokesperson added. However, the FDA, in dummy transactions, ordered some of the banned drugs online and also got delivery last month. FDA probe revealed that Jasper Infotech Pvt Ltd has agreements with various pharmaceutical deals all over India to supply drugs through Snapdeal.com and also collect payments. "The drugs involved are containing Sildenafil Citrate tablets which are to be sold

by retail only on the prescription of Urologist, Endocrinologist, Venerologist, Dermatologist and Psychiatrist... they are to be taken with caution and self-medication and indiscriminate use may lead to harmful effects,” Kamble said. Kamble said the company's actions contravened the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 Sec. 3 and 4, which stipulate a jail term of three-to-five years and a minimum fine of Rs.100,000. The FDA has written to the DCGI to issue relevant directions in this regard, and also asked Drugs Controllers of other states to take action against the culprits in their respective regions. Kamble explained that only a certified medical practitioner can sell the Schedule H drugs and only when prescribed by a doctor. Since such type of online sale of drugs is not allowed,

the FDA has ordered lodging of police complaints against Snapdeal.com CEO Kunal Bahl, other directors of the company and distributors of the drug. On April 16, the FDA sleuths raided Snapdeal. com's offices in Goregaon, north-west Mumbai, after a specific tip-off was received that prescription drugs like Ascoril cough syrup, Vigora tablets, and other medicines were being sold online. It later carried out searches at Snapdeal.com's offices and godowns in this connection. Besides, Kamble said, the FDA is also investigating Flipkart.com and Amazon.com offices to ascertain whether they are also indulging in such activities, and has sought details from them in this regard. "Through such vigilant actions, the FDA is trying to control the menace of Internet-based sale of drugs which could be harmful to the patients," Kamble said.

s it attempts to drive growth and innovation, India lags the developed and emerging world in a key area, research and development, as a recent imbroglio over stipends reveals¬. An IndiaSpend analysis reveals that India has 366 research and development (R&D) personnel per million population, compared with 1,366 in Brazil, 2,358 in China and 6,995 in Germany, according to the Unesco. At 10,073, Iceland has the highest number of R&D personnel per million population. Spending on research activities in India is low: 0.85%t of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013 and projected at 0.9% in 2014. Global spending averages around 1.8%. While the United States spends around 2.8% of GDP on R&D, China spends 2 % and Russia 1.5%, according to a report by Batelle, a non-profit research and development organisation. On an average, an Indian researcher is paid around Rs.2.5

lakh/year, which is 22 percent lower than the average minimum salary range of Rs.3.2-Rs.5 lakh/year paid by well-known IT and engineering firms to fresh graduates. For more than a year, research scholars across India have been demanding increased stipends. Scholars at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, wore armbands to protest the issue during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the institute. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) approved an increase in stipends in October 2014. These range from 55 percent for junior research fellows, from Rs.16,000 to Rs.25,000, and 66 percent for research associates, from Rs.24,000 to Rs.40,000. The University Grants Commission (UGC) also announced a 55% hike in 15 fellowship schemes. But the scholars still haven't received the hiked stipends. Ignoring R&D in this manner could imperil India's future growth and without research, India struggles with innovation. Low spending on R&D is the major rea-

son India lags similar economies in innovation and scientific development. In 2012, Manmohan Singh, then prime minister, had expressed concern that expenditure on research and development in India has been "too low and stagnant". India had 0.44 million R&D personnel, as compared to China's 3.2 million, Japan's 0.86 million and Russia's 0.83 million, according to data last available. In terms of filing patents, too, India lags major countries, and its contribution to global patent filings was 1.8 percent in 2012. The number of patents filed by foreigners in India largely exceeds patents filed by residents between 2005-2012, a trend also observed in Brazil and South Africa, according to data available with the World Bank. The number of female R&D personnel in India is also low: Just 15 percent are female, compared to 29 percent in France, 41.4 percent in South Africa and 27.3 percent in Germany. Bulgaria, where women comprise 53.3 percent of personnel, tops the list.

Workers around the world unite on May Day BERLIN, MAy 1 (AP): Left-wing groups and trade unions staged rallies across Europe, the Middle East and Asia on Friday to mark International Workers Day. Most events were peaceful protests for workers’ rights and world peace. Historically, May 1 regularly sees clashes between police and militant groups in some cities. International Workers Day originates in the United States. American unions first called for the introduction of an eight-hour working day in the second half of the 19th century. A general strike was declared to press these demands, starting May 1, 1886. The idea spread to other countries and since then workers around the world have held protests on Here’s a look at some of the May Day events around the world: TURKEY In Turkey Police and May Day demonstrators clashed in Istanbul as crowds determined to defy a government ban tried to march to the city’s iconic

The demonstrations are the first large-scale protests since the government passed a security bill this year giving police expanded powers to crack down on protesters. SOUTH KOREA Thousands of people marched in the capital Seoul on Friday for a third week to protest government labor policies and the handling of a ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people a year ago. Demonstrators occupied several downtown streets and sporadically clashed with police officers. Protesters tried to move buses used to block their progress. Police responded by spraying tear gas. That would surpass the 8,500 who died in a 1934 earthquake, the last disaster on this scale to hit the Himalayan nation sandwiched between India and China.

KATHMANDU, MAy 1 (REUTERS): The death toll from Nepal’s devastating earthquake rose steadily past 6,200 on Friday as fresh aftershocks and the stench of rotting bodies made it hard for nervous survivors to return to their homes. Disposal of the hundreds of bodies still being found six days after the 7.9 magnitude quake devastated the Himalayan nation of 28 million people was becoming a problem for officials, who have ordered immediate cremations. “Morgues are full beyond capacity and we have been given instruction to

incinerate bodies immediately after they are pulled out,” said Raman Lal, an Indian paramilitary force official working in coordination with Nepali forces. Aid was slowly beginning to reach remote towns and villages nestled in the mountains and foothills but the overpowering smell of bodies trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings in the capital was making it hard for residents to return to their homes. Many Nepalis have been sleeping in the open since Saturday’s quake. According to the United Nations, 600,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.

Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat said Nepal would need at least $2 billion to rebuild homes, hospitals, government offices and historic buildings and appealed for help from international donors. “This is just an initial estimate and it will take time to assess the extent of damage and calculate the cost of rebuilding,” Mahat told Reuters. The United Nations has said 8 million people had been affected, with at least 2 million in need of tents, water, food and medicines over the next three months. A home ministry official said the death toll had

Unprecedented Scale Home ministry official Laxmi Prasad Dhakal said that, even though the 1934 quake was more powerful, there were fewer people living in the Kathmandu valley then. “The scale of reconstruction will be unprecedented,” Dhakal said. “We have still not even been able to assess the damage in remote areas, which have been completely devastated.”Officials have said the chances of finding any more survivors were fading, even though a boy and a woman had on Thursday been pulled from the rubble where they had lain trapped for five days. As rescuers slowly started reaching outlying areas, witnesses reported seeing 70 to 80 percent of build-

the quake damage, poor weather and aftershocks. Tensions between foreigners and Nepalis desperate to be evacuated have also surfaced. In Ashrang village in Gorkha, one of the worst-hit districts about four hours by road west of Kathmandu, hundreds of villagers were living outdoors with little food and water even as boxes of biscuits, juice and sacks of rice and wheat were stored in a nearby government office. Nepal is also appealing to foreign governments for more helicopters help the 20 at work in rescue operations. China was expected to send more, home ministry official Dhakal said. In the Himalayas, climbing is set to reopen on Mount Everest next week after damage caused by avalanches triggered by the quake is repaired, although many have abandoned their ascents. A massive avalanche killed 18 climbers and sherpa mountain guides at the Everest base camp.

‘French soldiers raped African children in camp’ BANGUI, MAy 1 (AP): Residents of a squalid refugee camp said that French soldiers tasked with protecting civilians had sexually abused boys as young as 9 years old, luring the children with army rations and small change when their families had nothing to feed them. The accounts given to The Associated Press by one of the boys’ mother and another woman living in the camp came a day after French authorities acknowledged that investigations into the allegations had been underway for months. The children — who described to investigators last year how they were given bottles of water after being sodomized — are still living in the refugee camp, relatives said. The French government has not explained why the probe was kept quiet, though France’s president promised tough punishment for any soldier found guilty. The probe came to light Wednesday in a report in Britain’s the

Guardian newspaper after the alleged whistleblower at the United Nations was removed from his duties. Details also emerged Thursday of similar accusations against soldiers from Chad and Equatorial Guinea. “For the moment, we don’t know if the facts have been proven,” French military spokesman Col. Gilles Jaron said Thursday, stressing the importance of the French military operation in limiting the bloodshed in Central African Republic where thousands died amid fighting between Muslims and Christians. France, the former colonizer of Central African Republic, sent several thousand additional troops to Bangui in late 2013 and in early 2014 amid sectarian violence that prompted tens of thousands to seek refuge on the grounds of the capital’s airport. The mother of one of the children told AP that her son was just 9 years old when he was assaulted by French soldiers. She spoke

on condition of anonymity so as not to identify her son as a victim of sexual abuse. Her family had fled to the airport the first day of the sectarian clashes in December 2013, and she and her son are still living there. “The children were vulnerable because they were hungry and their parents had nothing to give them, so the children were forced to ask the soldiers for food,” she recalled. “They took advantage of the children forcing them to perform oral sex and also sodomizing them,” she said. “The moaning of children in the area often started around 10 p.m. or 11 p.m.” Another resident said other abused children ranged in age from 10 years old to 13. “In exchange for cookies, the soldiers demanded oral sex,” she said, recounting what the children told her. “Afterward they were given bottles of water. They even sodomized the children.” Paula Donovan, whose

group AIDS-Free World has been looking into abuse by peacekeeping personnel, said she had been given a copy of the U.N. internal report that detailed the accusations. She said that 16 soldiers were cited, including one or two who the children said had been on the lookout while the abuses happened. Children also accused soldiers from Chad and Equatorial Guinea, Donovan said. “A child reported that he had watched from a hiding place as his friend was raped by two soldiers from Equatorial Guinea,” she said in an email. “One soldier stood watch while the other demanded oral sex and then sodomized the boy, and then the two soldiers switched roles.” She added, “At another point in the interviews, a boy reported seeing a child he knew being sodomized by two soldiers from Chad while a third Chadian soldier watched.” French military officials refused Thursday to say whether the soldiers have

been identified or whether any were still serving in Central African Republic. The U.N. later set up a 12,000-strong peacekeeping force in September, taking over from regional peacekeepers who hailed from neighboring countries. The U.N. says the investigation is now in the hands of French prosecutors. The chief prosecutor in Bangui’s capital says a local inquiry is being launched as well. French President Francois Hollande, speaking Thursday to reporters in western France, said if the allegations are proven true, the sanctions against the soldiers should be “very serious” and “set an example.” About 18,000 people are still living on the grounds of the airport nearly 1½ years after the violence erupted, in some cases seeking shelter under rusty decommissioned planes. At the height of the crisis, more than 100,000 internally displaced people were living there.

separate May Day marches in Athens, carrying banners and shouting anti-austerity slogans. Minor clashes broke out at the end of the peaceful marches, when a handful of hooded youths threw a petrol bomb at riot police. No injuries or arrests were reported. Earlier, ministers from the governing radical left Syriza party joined protesters gathering for the marches, including Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis — who was mobbed by media and admirers — and the ministers of labor and energy. In the northern city of Thessaloniki, police said another 13,000 people took part in three separate, peaceful marches.

GERMANY Police in Berlin say the traditional ‘Walpurgis Night’ protest marking the eve of May 1 was calmer than previous years. Several thousand people took part in anti-capitalist street parties in the north of the city. Fireworks and stones were thrown at police, injuring one officer. Fifteen people were detained. Elsewhere in the German capital revelers partied “extremely peacefully,” police noted on Friday morning. At noon, Green Party activists unveiled a statue at Alexanderplatz in central Berlin of Edward Snowden, Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning, considered heroes by many on the left for leaking secret U.S. intelligence and military documents. The statue, called “Anything to say,” depicts the three standing on chairs and is scheduled to go on tour around the GREECE world, according to the In financially struggling website http://www.anyGreece, an estimated 13,000 thingtosay.com/. people took part in three In the central German

city of Weimar far-right extremists attacked a union event. Police said 15 people were injured and 29 were arrested. RUSSIA In Moscow, tens of thousands of workers braved chilly rain to march across Red Square. Instead of the red flags with the Communist hammer and sickle used in Soviet times, they waved the blue flags of the dominant Kremlin party and the Russian tricolor. Despite an economic crisis that is squeezing the working class, there was little if any criticism of President Vladimir Putin or his government. Participants said the May 1 march was a tradition going back to their childhood. This Soviet nostalgia was imbued with feelings of patriotism in the run-up to the 70th anniversary of victory in World War II on May 9. The Communist Party later held a separate march under the slogan “against fascism and in support of Donbass,” with participants calling for greater support for the separatists fighting the Ukrainian army in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine. CUBA Thousands of people were converging on Havana’s Plaza of the Revolution for the traditional march, led this year by President Raul Castro and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. After attending Cuba’s celebration, Maduro was to fly back to Caracas to attend the May Day observances in his own country. Additional marches were planned in major cities around Cuba, including Santiago and Holguin in the east.

NbA: bulls clobber bucks 120-66 to advance

MILWAUKEE, MAY 1 (AP): Chicago came close to setting an NBA playoff record for margin of victory as the Bulls routed Milwaukee 120-66 on Thursday to complete a 4-2 series win against the Bucks and move into the final eight of the postseason. In the day's other playoff game, the Los Angeles Clippers pulled out an impressive road win at San Antonio to avoid elimination and square that Western Conference series at 3-3. Amid all the Bulls' star power, Mike Dunleavy was the unlikely top scorer with 20 points and also got under the skin of the young Bucks with some physical play that sparked retaliation. "They had some momentum in the series, won a couple in a row," Chicago Bulls' Jimmy Butler (21) drives against the Milwaukee Bucks' Zaza Pachulia (27) during the first half of Game 6 Dunleavy said. "We came out on of an NBA basketball first-round playoff series on April 30, in their court and put it on them. That's frustrating. If anybody's Milwaukee. (AP Photo)

Genesis of Nagaland Missions Movement (NMM)

T

Missions Week 1-7 May

he Gospel of Christ first reached the Nagas through the sacrifices of the American Baptist missionaries whose labors established the church among a few tribes. In 1955, when the last missionary family withdrew from Nagaland, the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) took up the unfinished task of evangelising the remaining unreached tribes in Nagaland. In 1960, a Home Mission Board was formed for this purpose. As this ministry developed a decision was made in 1969 to employ a full-time Secretary for Home Mission Division. The first Home Mission Secretary was appointed in 1970. Also that year for the first time 20% of the yearly budget was designated for Foreign Mission work. To reflect this broader scope of ministry, the name Nagaland Baptist Home Mission was changed to Nagaland Missionary Movement (NMM) at the Thirty-fourth Annual Session of the NBCC in 1971 held at Kohima from 31st January - 3rd February. With the changing trend in the world for missions, the need for changing the nomenclature of “Nagaland Missionary Movement” to “Nagaland Missions Movement” was recommended by the Board to the NBCC Executive Committee which was approved in its meeting held on 21st May, 2008 at Kohima. In 1980, the Nagaland Baptist Church Council by its action (ANBC 79/415) declared the “Nagaland Mission Day” to be observed in all the Baptist Churches of Nagaland annually from MAY 1-7 for SPECIAL PRAYER AND RAISING OF FUNDS. Since then, our churches observe this week as Missions Week. Today, it is also observed in institutions and mission fields for prayer and financial support. We invite you to extend your continued prayer support, financial support and personal involvement in reaching out the un-reached through the various ministry programmes of NMM, the Missions department of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC). SHORT CUT WAY OF LIFE I was musing at how people like cutting things short. I hear people calling the noun by using the adjectives only. A couple of examples will suffice to get to the point: 1. A truck manufactured by the Tata Company is just called ‘Tata’ instead of the full name ‘Tata Truck’. People say, “I came by Tata as I did not get bus ticket”. One can imagine the scores of Tata products including, Tata soaps, Tata tea, Tata salt, Tata tools, and various cosmetics, among others. Which of these Tata products the person came by? 2. A telephone made portable, even calling ‘Mobile Phone’ is referred to by the adjective only for want of time, as ‘mobile’. Imagine how many things today are made mobile by technology. In this touch and run culture when people cannot locate their misplaced telephones they just cut short and cry ‘where is my mobile’? Which of the modern mobiles the speaker meant? The actual object ‘telephone’ is never mentioned here. 3. An official photo for one’s personal identity is called ‘passport photo’.The whole village now calls the passport photo as ‘passport’ only to supply to the Bank, to the Pension Office, or the Gas Agency. No one ever mentions the word ‘photo’ though that word is the need of the hour. This is how the educated people have taught the villagers to call the nouns by the adjectives. Adjectives normally precede the nouns but for want of time, or to get to the desired object with the shortest possible means people use only the adjectives/prefixes. Reverend Judas is sometimes addressed as ‘Reverend’ only instead of using his proper name, for want of time or, to cut things short. These short cut seeking people would like to do everything the short cut way. They are given to construct roads with boulders, stone chips, sands, and bitumen. They cut the work short by cutting off some of those essential items away in quality and in amount because the bill should be realized first at any cost by the shortest possible means. Various subsidies are given to these people for developing their land but they cut short to the money even before the work begins. Construction of public buildings on contracts follows the same procedure. Jobs are easily obtained by short cuts, paying heavily by those well to do. The public cut short to what could have been their pay off by taking huge sum in exchange for their votes, thus leaving no chance for development or good governance by those voted to the seat. People live in this natural world but when they compromise the natural process to produce the natural the result will be the unnatural or supernatural. They produce a world that is not natural, a world unfit for living, unpleasant to live in. Worst for these people living the short cut way is when they seek to cut short to heaven. Their religious living is not natural because they want to wear the crown without bearing the cross. God’s way of ordering things is that people should live the way of the cross to reach the reward of the crown. Thank God no human can grease the hand of God. God has given God’s people to live by the Kingdom values including those virtues listed under the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). These spiritual ideals are tough indeed to live out unless the people want to be true to their Lord. In cutting things short these people finding difficult to live them out have labeled their properties by these divine nomenclatures. Thus you see the peoples’ properties ranging from tiny Pan Shops to shopping malls, labeled Grace, Love, Faith, heaven, peace, angels, revivals, maranatha, Immanuel, besides naming many people after biblical characters (the name of Christ is also used in short cut manner). Once these heavenly virtues are done away with following short cut by labeling properties the people can live their lives free of these spiritual entities. In some cases these labels are used to attract sympathizers but these have been so frequent that the onlookers are annoyed by the wrong motif of the users. The people need changing their method of facing life, including living their religious life. There is a need to avoid cutting everything short and facing life squarely. How can people face truth in short cut? How can they call the noun by the adjectives only? True, adjectives qualify everything but without the object so qualified is seen life will only remain in subjunctive mood. Christians are qualified by that name they take but without allowing the Reality by which they are qualified to rule them they only remain in the qualifying phrase. How will, then, Christ work with them? In other words, how will truth prevail among them? 1. ‘People’ is used to refer to the group of the actors to avoid the intricacy of the variant pronouns Ezamo Murry 5th Mile, Model village Dimapur

been there before, that's frustrating, and I understand that." The Bulls, who move on to face Cleveland in the second round, finished four points from the NBA playoff record for largest margin of victory. Minnesota beat St. Louis 133-75 on March 19, 1956. The game was over early, but it still featured plenty of the intensity and bad blood that marked the first five games of the series. Dunleavy drew the foul that led to the ejection of Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo for a flagrant 2 foul just before halftime. Pau Gasol scored 19 points and Jimmy Butler added 16 for the Bulls, who started the series with a 3-0 lead before two straight wins by the defensive-minded Bucks put them back in position to tie it. Derrick Rose scored 15 points and all five Chicago starters were in double figures.

In an indication of Milwaukee's misery on offense, no Bucks starter scored more than ZaZa Pachulia's eight points. It was the biggest playoff loss in team history. The Bucks lost by 36 points at New York in 1970. The Bucks were 25 of 76 from the field (32.9 percent) while Chicago was 46 of 90 (51.1 percent). Antetokounmpo was ejected after a hard foul on Dunleavy during a 3-point attempt that sent him crashing into the front row of fans with 1:34 left in the second quarter. After a review, officials ruled it a flagrant 2. "Sometimes, you've got to take a hard foul," Dunleavy said. "We've all been there. There's a time and a place for it." It may have been a reaction to a hand to the face that Dunleavy gave Antetokounmpo a little earlier in the game — an incident similar to contact be-

tween Dunleavy's arm and Michael Carter-Williams' face near the beginning of the game. Bucks coach Jason Kidd called it a learning experience for Antetokounmpo, adding that "it wasn't very smart." "He kind of got under our guys' skins," Pachulia said. "Especially he picked the young guys, he picked the right guys, and unfortunately our guys responded and we got hurt. But they're going to learn from it." It was a rough end to a successful season for the Bucks, who were the league's worst team in 2013-14 but turned it around to earn the No. 6 playoff season under Kidd. "They're not a secret anymore," Kidd said. "They've got to get better if they want to compete against the best." The Bucks were never really in this one, though, trailing 34-16 at the end of the

first quarter and 65-33 at the half. "We got better," Kidd said. "The whole experience of being in the playoffs, you can't take that away from those guys, no matter if you lose by 40 or you lose by one. It's a loss. That's it. You move on." Just not this year. The Clippers forced a Game 7 against the Spurs by pulling off a meritorious 102-96 win at San Antonio. Blake Griffin had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Chris Paul had 19 points and 15 assists for Los Angeles. Marco Belinelli hit two 3-pointers in the final 80 seconds, including one with 14 seconds remaining, to cut the Clippers' lead to 98-96. But Jamal Crawford hit two free throws to preserve the win. The Clippers, who won for the second time in San Antonio, will host Game 7 on Saturday. No other first-round series this year has gone the distance.

public discourse

persecution not expected in Nagaland

A

s reported by some Christian organizations that in the year 2014, about 147 incidents were reported persecuted on Christians in different parts of India. There were also many unreported cases. If this continues in the same manner, this year there would be more persecutions. Who is responsible for this kind of religious persecution that is threatening the lives of minorities which is against Indian constitution? The main responsible organization for creating religious tension is mostly by Rashtriya swayamsevak Singh (RSS). The RSS was banned twice in 1948 and 1992. This organization openly decries the existence of a democratic, federal and secular India; it has long tradition of worshipping dictators like Hitler and Mussolini. The RSS was the brain child of KB Hedgewar,VD Savargar and BS Moonje. They were great fans of Fascism and Nazism. Later, MS.Golwalkar, in his book, we or Our Nationhood Defend, idolizing the Nazi cultural nationalism of Hitler in the following words: German Race pride has become the topic of the day. To keep us the purity of the Race and its Culture, Germany shocked the world by her purging the country of the Semitic Races- the Jews. Race Pride at its highest has been manifested here. Germany has also shown how well-nigh impossible it Is for Races and cultures , having differences going to the root, to be assimilated into one united Whole , a good lesson for us in Hindustan to learn and profit by.(M.S. Golwalkar, We or Our Nationhood Defined,1939,p.35).

The ideological statements made by the RSS chiefs clearly come to conclusion that their intention is to create a Hindu Nation by ways and means that are hidden to them but dangerous to us. If I am allowed to write about RSS and their activities space does not permit to do so. Therefore, let me come to the point. It is known fact, in many cases; Christian’s persecutions are directly committed by RSS. The sad part of the story is even these incidents are reported to the police but they refused to take the case, even if they do so with the support from some local politicians manipulate the case ,thereby, victims become the accused. In such a situation the only hope for the Christian communities in India are the faithful Christian lawyers who tirelessly and fearlessly rescue the victims. Their service to the hopeless people must be appreciated and learn from them. These are instances happening everyday in different parts of India, where Christians are minorities but in the case of Nagaland, Christians are majority and hence we do not expect direct persecution. But on the other hand, Nagaland can be more vulnerable. This could happen through Political influences. As we all know Nagas are very susceptible to Power and Money, and moreover our survival depends on Central Government. Hence there are enough chances for survival of our Faith in God can be easily compromised if we are not deeply rooted in our Faith. And furthermore, the present context of Naga community system is very fragile. The reasons are, we are divided in politics, we have fac-

tionalism, we have division in Churches and every organization in many cases works for their own members benefits ,but have less vision plan for inclusive of Nagas as One Christian Nation .

The following visions are suggested for Action-Plans : 1. The political parties in Nagaland should not compromise our religion for the sake of their own political mileage. And Naga masses should not support if such ideology is ever seen in any political party. 2. The Christian Churches in Nagaland need to be a watch-tower not only inside the four-walls of church premises, but to be more vigilant that are happening day to day in the multi-religious context ,particularly in Dimapur Town. 3. In India, the victims of persecutions hope lies in the hands of Christian legal profession. The Christian lawyers in different parts of states in India are the voices for the voiceless minorities. Likewise, in Nagaland the lawyers are almost Christians. Their contributions through the mass awareness of religious rights would be immensely a pillar of self-consciousness of religious rights by every citizen. Why because legal matter plays an important role in defending our religious freedom. Is it necessary to form a religious defending legal organization in Nagaland? If it sounds good, I will be the first person to extend my concern for this matter. 4. Thus far in Nagaland, there is no record of collectively and intentionally

the Christian community has initiated anything that is against other faiths, even though, the Christian population in the state are majority .Moreover, Christians would never force to subjugate others by using religious ideology, rather, the Love of God and legacy of self-sacrifice of our Lord Jesus are the principles of our faith. And friends of other religions residing in Nagaland must respect these principles of Christians and pass a message to their own religious communities to stop religious persecution towards the Christians. On the other hand, friends of other faiths should not play any role to disintegrate the Christian communities in Nagaland.

Conclusion: Christians in Nagaland should not remain a silent spectators in regard to religious persecution and moreover we should also be a voice for the voiceless Christians in India. Human beings are moral beings. Therefore, our religious obligation towards our Creator (God) is above all our wants and needs. The Bible says : “But first seek the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”. (Matt.6:33).Our great Leader Joshua says: “choose this day whom you will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”.(Joshua 24:15). Do what your heart desires, but remember one day God will bring your good and bad deeds into Judgement. Yanbemo Lotha, Pastor Dimapur

25th Anniversary of the Funeral of AZ Phizo

A

People with a History are a People at Peace with itself. The Happiness Level of a People depends on many factors. This Graveyard is a place of Reverence, of Peace and a Heritage for the people, the present and the future. At the very outset, it is set on record that this Graveyard is not for the extension of any Political Group. It was organized by a Funeral Organizing Committee (FOC), selected by an unprecedented crowd of Naga Public that packed the Naga Club Building and its premises on the morning of 1st May of 1990 for the Funeral of A.Z. Phizo, the accepted Father figure of the Naga People. From the very beginning, in conformity with the majority Faith of the Nagas; it was not thought to raise a lifesize figure of Art Work in the likeness of the Man, in Stone or in Metal. In the tradition of the Nagas, Stone speaks a universal language timelessly, and this Stone represent the Heritage of that language to all. President of the Naga National Council, Mr. A. Z. Phizo passed away quietly and peacefully in his house in Bromley in London on 30 April 1990. After the News reached the family members at Kohima, it spread like wild fire all over in the City from person to person by words of mouth. Everywhere people were shocked to learn the news; they were perplexed as to what to do or what to say. The atmosphere of the city was charged and tense; the sky seemed to fall; the people were aghast. Human Words could not adequately describe the peculiar atmosphere. Then News spread that a Meeting will be held at the Naga Club Building at 10 AM on 1st May. Nagas packed into the small Naga Club Building and filled all the spaces around it. Mr. Tobu Periatsü Kevichüsa, the General Secretary of the NNC Presided over the Meeting. He did not mince words. He precisely spoke a short Speech that his organization has not the proper channel of communication with the Government to work out the modalities to bring the remains of the President to Nagaland, nor do they

have the means to arrange the necessary finances. 'But', he said: 'since the Naga People regards Phizo as their Father figure, his Organization hands over the responsibility of bringing the mortal remains of the Leader, to the Naga Public'. So said, Tobu vacated the Chair. Then Speakers after Speakers vowed Phizo's Body will be brought to Nagaland sooner or later. Every speaker said his body will not be buried in a foreign land that it will surely be brought to our native land for burial. Someone even said 'his body will be brought to Nagaland by hook or by crook'! Since everyone were saying the same thing, someone wisely suggested that time should not be lost further in everyone saying the same thing and that a Committee be immediately formed to bring the Body to our land. Immediately a Committee was set up with the responsibility to raise a Public Fund for the purpose of bringing the body to Nagaland. The four major Naga Tribes -Angami, Ao, Sema and Lotha- immediately were to please raised Rs. 1,00,000/each early the very next morning. The Nagaland Contractors Union also was requested for contribution of Rs. 50,000/-. The Sema, the Angami and the Ao Communities deposited their donations soon and later the Chakhesangs and the Changs also gave Rs. 1,00,000/- each; the Contractor Union donated Rs. 30,000/- . Many other Organizations including the Government of Nagaland and non-Nagas also contributed to the Public Fund. All together an amount of Rs.16,00,000/- Lakhs finally came to the Fund out of which an amount of Rs.1,00,000/- each were returned to the Sema and Chang Communities on their own request. It was thought, in the fitness of things, that a well known Reverend may be the Chairman of the Funeral Organizing Committee to which Rev. V.K. Nuh was selected. The Chairman with some others thought it necessary to represent the Funeral Committee

immediately and proceeded to Delhi to arrange for the Exchange of the British Pound. In this, Rajmohan Gandhi, the Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and his friend Niketu Iralu provided vital help in procuring the exchanged amount and Visas very quickly for the Members. In those times it took months to get the rupee exchanged and Visa obtained. In London, it necessitated more than several days to arrange for the various Medical and Official Papers for the transportation of the dead body of the Leader by Air. The then Indian High Commissioner to UK, Mr. Kuldip Nayar in his great graciousness provided the necessary communication to take the dead body of the Naga Leader to his native Land for burial. The remains of the Naga Leader were finally brought to Dimapur on 10th May 1990 afternoon. Suddenly as the Chartered Russian Plane was landing in the Air Port at Dimapur, a Rainbow mystically appeared in the Sky to the triumphant Naga yelling of thousands upon thousands of Citizens of all kinds of people waiting impatiently at the Airport. The Cortege proceeded to Kohima with the Coffin draped in the Naga National Flag -Rain Bow on a Blue background- and Naga Warriors in traditional Dress and Spears on Guard in a new Mini Tata vehicle never before used for any other purposes with the Khonoma Baptist Church Pastor Keriu Mor and Kevisiezolie Suohu, the Transport in Charge, FOC at the Driver's side, moved at snails pace through the National Highway, crowded with Villagers in lighted Candles on the sides to pay their last Reverence to the Man who led them for so many years. By the time the funeral procession neared the outskirts of Kohima, it was night and the head lights of the Vehicles accompanying the Cortege, in the Curves and the Corners of the Road, became impossible to count; their number being too great. In Kohima, both sides of the Street were jam packed with crowd, many in burned out Candles, in pin drop silence; and not a single urchin, nor a single stray

dog, crossed the Road. Such disciplined crowd was never before seen. Mrs. Geweni Phizo, for more than a generation of struggling Nagas, has not seen the face of her husband who has given his whole life in the Service of his people. Therefore the FOC decided that she should be united with her husband for the last time in their own private Home at the Mission Compound, Kohima. The Body was directly taken to their home and laid there for 2 hrs. At12 O'clock midnight, it was taken to the Local Ground -with Naga National Flag for once flying on a lofty Post- to enable the pressing Public to see the face of their revered Leader and file past in final Respect. Kohima had never before seen the size of crowd that packed the Football Ground during the funeral Service of A.Z. Phizo in such solemn silence. The City will perhaps never ever see the likes of such huge crowd in pin drop silence again. The Queue of people to file past the Casket stretched to thousands of Meters on both ends of the Ground Gates. From dawn to 4 o'clock in the afternoon of 11 May 1990, there was no end to the queue line. Student Volunteers at last had to gently nudge the people in the line past the Casket at the count of every third Second! Mr. Chalie Kevichüsa, latterly selected Secretary of the FOC Chaired the Funeral Service; the Executive Secretary of the NBCC Rev. Ponsing Konyak invoked the Blessings of God and a hundred Voices Choir of the Khedi Baptist Church sang a most inspiring song: 'He hided my Soul in the cleft of the Rock' , a favorite of Late Zapuphizo. A few prominent Persons necessarily spoke, of which J.P. Misra, a Gandhian Social Worker from UP and a great admirer of late A.Z. Phizo, accompanied the dead body from London to Kohima on his own account and spoke most supportively of the Naga Leader. A little after the 4 in the evening of a perfect sunny day, finally the Body was taken to the Graveyard at the new Secretariat site and laid to rest. Thepfulhouvi Solo

Meet J.Crew's four-year- Jennifer Lopez’s J tribute to Selena at old fashion designer emotional Billboard Latin Music Awards Sydney Keiser- aka Mayhem- may be the youngest fashion designer in the world

hen a budding fashion designer named Mayhem was approached to design a capsule collection for J.Crew's childrenswear line Crewcuts last year, she was more relaxed about it than most people would have been. But then, her rise to prominence had already been somewhat meteoric. Particularly for a four-yearold. 'We were most definitely a little surprised at first, but very excited that a brand we already loved - and had hanging in our own closets would want to work with us in such a unique way,' says Angie Keiser, Mayhem's mother (Mayhem's real name is Sydney). 'I was cautiously optimistic, but hopping on to a conference call with four of their executives, who are not only smart and savvy women but mums as well, sealed the deal.'

Mayhem, now five, started making clothes from paper, gift wrap and sticky tape with her mother over a year ago, after developing a fondness for creating her own outfits from Keiser's clothing. Her efforts are posted to her blog, Fashion by Mayhem, run by Keiser, which has swiftly built up followers. The accompanying Instagram account currently has 474,000. Jenny Cooper, the head designer for Crewcuts, says, 'I was on a trip across the world, glued to an article about Mayhem and texting Jenna (Lyons, the creative director and president of J.Crew), asking, "Really? Could it be possible?" We were convinced that Mayhem was the real deal and that it could be fun to have a four-year-old do a project for us.' In June 2014 Mayhem

and Keiser were flown to New York from their home in Ohio. They spent two and a half days at J.Crew's offices with Cooper and Lyons. 'When it was time to design, we sat on Jenny's office floor and played pretty much like we do at home,' Keiser recalls. 'Mayhem then put together her own design board, choosing colours and fabrics, and the rest of the playing and designing kept those colours in mind.' 'I think I was prepared to do a lot more guiding than we actually did,' Cooper says. 'She is very definitive about what she likes.' The team did, however, have to make some allowances for their precocious young collaborator. 'Everyone

knew and embraced that Mayhem was a little girl who liked having fun making stuff,' Keiser says. 'And when she got tired, it was totally OK that she took an impromptu nap in Jenny's office.' 'She thinks the collection is "really awesome" and is excited to finally be able to wear the pieces,' Keiser says. He underwent five hours of surgery, and U2 was forced to cancel its weeklong residency on The Tonight Show. And now, five months later as the band is preparing to launch its Innocence + Experience Tour, Bono still hasn't recovered fully, and he might not know whether he'll regain all of the feeling in his left hand for another 13 months. “I really used to think that my head was harder than any surface it came in contact with, and I don’t anymore,” said Bono. “I

There is no glory here.” The U2 frontman offers an update on his recovery to The New York Times in a preview story about the tour. Most of the lingering damage is concentrated in his left hand and forearm, it seems. Bono explained that he can't bend his curled fourth finger and pinky on that hand, and another part of his left hand "is like rigor mortis." It feels like I have somebody else’s hand,” he said. "But they say that nerves heal about a millimeter a week, so in about 13 months, I should know if it’s coming back.” His forearm is "all numb"

e were more than a little surprised when Rihanna was announced as the new creative director of Puma in December last year, as well as a global ambassador for the sportswear brand. Now we can see the first fruits of her labour as she appears in her debut campaign. "An icon who does it all needs a shoe that can keep up. Introducing the Pulse XT, worn by @ badgalriri. #ForeverFaster," tweeted Puma along-

side the black-and-white image, which shows Riri in a balletic lunge. The 27-year-old singer wears a Puma-emblazoned crop top and visor with patterned leggings, a sweatshirt tied around her waist and the Pulse XT trainers, all of which we can assume she played a part in designing. When the partnership was announced it was explained that Rihanna will "work with Puma to design and customise classic

Puma styles as well as create new styles to add to the Puma product portfolio." But Puma isn't her only current sartorial concern - she's also gearing up to be unveiled as the new face of Dior. She stars in the fourth episode of the French fashion house's 'Secret Garden' series, which was filmed by Steven Klein in Versailles during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. The short film will be released at the end of May.

ennifer Lopez, 45, joined Los Dinos and delivered a powerful, emotional homage to Selena, the iconic Tejano singer who was murdered in 1995, during the Billboard Latin Music Awards ceremony on April 30! If there was anyone to pay proper tribute to the late Latin music superstar, it’s definitely JLo. Jennifer was phenomenal during her April 30 appearance at the awards ceremony. While wearing a crop top with jeweled pants under a sheer overlay, Jennifer performed a medley of Selena’s greatest hits with Selena’s siblings Suzette and A.B. and widow Chris Pérez (Los Dinos). Selena’s father, Abraham, even joined the group at the end of the performance. When it was all done, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! Jennifer’s connection to Selena is more than just admiration. Jennifer and Selena are the only two Latin female stars to top the Billboard 200. And the connection doesn’t stop there! Selena was responsible for launching JLo’s career, as Jennifer portrayed the late singer in the 1997 Selena biopic. Jennifer cut her first demo afterwards, which led to her debut single and a legendary music career! It all came full circle on stage at the Billboard Latin Music Awards!

In reply, the hosts chased down the target in only 13.5 overs to rise to fourth spot in the eight-team league, where Kings XI still lie last. Chelsea's Costa may not play again this season

LONDON, May 1 (ReuteRs): Diego Costa will not play against Crystal Palace and the Chelsea striker may not feature again this season if the champions-elect clinch the Premier League title with victory on Sunday, manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday. Costa, who has scored 19 goals in his first season in England, has not featured since going off with a hamstring injury against Stoke City on April 4. Chelsea are three points away from a first league title since 2010 and Mourinho said he may allow the 26-year-old Costa, who has been plagued by hamstring injuries dating back to last season at Atletico Madrid, to take the rest of the campaign off. "There is a chance he might not play again if we win on Sunday," Mourinho told a news conference. "If we lose on Sunday and need the points against Liverpool, I would say he plays. In this moment we are result after result. If we don't need him he probably doesn't play again. "He needs a long break and a good period of work. We are preparing a good working situation for him during the holiday period." Chelsea beat Leicester City 3-1 on Wednesday to open up a 13-point

lead at the top and Mourinho said his players were relaxed ahead of the match against Palace at Stamford Bridge. "We are calm," the Portuguese coach said. "We need two or three points to be champions. Let's say three to make sure you don't depend on goal difference. "We have been top of the league since the beginning of the season. That is something very difficult to do.

LONDON, May 1 (ReuteRs): Although pleased with the progress of his Arsenal side this season, manager Arsene Wenger is frustrated injuries have hampered the Gunners' premier league challenge. Fourth-placed finishers for the last two seasons, Arsenal currently sit third, level on 67 points with second-placed Manchester City, but with a game in hand. The Gunners have not lost in the league since a 2-1 away defeat away to north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in February, but despite their fine run of form they are 13 points behind champions-elect Chelsea. "We have made progress so I look at it in a positive way," Wenger told reporters on Friday. "What you want to show during the season, is that you are getting better. We were faced with a big challenge especially with Chelsea out in front. "They have proved to be more consistent from the start to the end and we weren't able to reel them in. "We had injuries to key players after the World Cup. We needed to find balance in the team. Looking back, we dropped big points... and that was a big

disappointment." Chelsea can seal the title with a win against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and Wenger believes their ability to grind out results is what sets them apart from the rest. "Once you are fighting for the Championship you win some games because you smell you can do it, games that you don't necessarily win if you are fourth or fifth. That doesn't always represent the value of the team," Wenger said. "The gap is there because they have been more consistent than us from start to end. They had a very strong start, and that got them through to the end." Arsenal travel to Hull City on Monday hoping to edge ahead of Manchester City in the race for second place, and leave fourthplaced Manchester United further behind. "Manchester City had ups and downs and started stronger than us and were in front for a long time. Manchester United had a slow start and became stronger," Wenger said. "We fight with each other to show who will be the best at the end. The only thing I can say is if we do well we can get in front of them."

"Obviously, we want to finish as soon as possible. If we can finish it at home, on Sunday, even better. That's what we have in our minds." Asked how he would celebrate winning a third league title at Chelsea after back-toback triumphs in 2005 and 2006 during his first stint in charge, Mourinho said: "I will go home. We have nothing prepared. Normally, I finish the game and go home."

fantastic 4/20 from his four overs. The Australian was given good backing by veteran Indian pacer Zaheer Khan, who returned to the playing XI with impressive figures of 4-0-17-2. Captain JP Duminy and spinner Amit Mishra also picked up a wicket each for the hosts, who played the last match of the 2015 season here. In reply, Daredevils hardly broke a sweat in chasing down the target with absolute ease. Openers Mayank Agarwal (52 not out) and Shreyas Iyer's (54) struck half-centuries to guide their team home with the help of a 106-run opening wicket partnership. Agarwal hit six boundaries and a six in his knock while Iyer, whose wicket was the only minor hiccup provided by Kings XI medio Thakur, smashed four boundaries and three sixes.

Boxer Manny Pacquiao speaks during a press conference on April 29 in Las Vegas. Pacquiao will face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a welterweight title fight in Las Vegas on Saturday. (AP Photo)

Las VeGas, May 1 (ReuteRs): When Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao enter the ring on Saturday the stakes could not be higher, even for a bout already labelled the "Fight of the Century." The richest prize fight of all-time will give each fighter a multi-million-dollar payday and smash pay-per-view numbers while eye-popping ticket prices, out of reach for all but the rich and famous, will see the 16,800-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena rival the Super Bowl in gate receipts. There is a garish championship belt embossed with 3,000 emeralds on the line along with the mythical title of world's best pound-for-pound fighter but more significantly it is a bout that could cement a boxing legacy and a fight on which the future of the sport could hang. Five-plus years in the making, all the hype and elements are in place to elevate the welterweight showdown into one of those memorable watershed sporting moments. Or it could be a flop, providing another blow for a sport that is just starting to lift itself back off the canvas. "This fight has been talked about for so long the anticipation now people are really looking forward to it and willing to pay any price to watch it," Oscar De La Hoya, one of the few boxers to fight Mayweather and Pacquiao, told Reuters. "It this fight is dull, if it's a dud then that can really affect the overall game but if it is an exciting fight, a fight people want to see again, it can take boxing to new heights." With tickets on the resale market commanding over $100,000 for ringside seats and close to 3 million people expected to pay $100 on pay-per-view, the undefeated Mayweather (47-0) and Filipino southpaw (57-5-2) will be expected to produce a spectacle worthy of such princely price tags. The fight will be a classic matchup of boxing styles. Considered one of the best defensive fighters of all-time, Mayweather is crafty with a superior ring intelligence that has allowed him to survive nearly two decades in the ring by avoiding danger. In contrast, Pacquiao brings an all-out attacking style to the showdown, a hard puncher capable of landing a knockout shot that could hand Mayweather his first

professional defeat. While the fight is the most anticipated in decades, for most boxing experts it comes a half-decade too late with both fighters past their prime. The 38-year-old American may not be as slick or fast as he was while there are questions about Pacquiao's power, the 36-year-old having not scored a knockout win since 2009 when he floored Briton Ricky Hatton in the second round. "The ingredients are there and it is only because of Pacquiao," said De La Hoya, who lost to both men. "We know what Mayweather is going to do, we've been there, we've done that but the one person who can make this fight an exciting one is Pacquiao. "He has a relentless style; he will be the one pressing the action. "It all depends on Pacquiao." For Mayweather, it will be his 11th consecutive fight at the MGM Grand but it is Pacquiao who will have an entire nation in his corner. A politician, philanthropist, recording artist and action movie star, Pacquiao is a national hero in his homeland where his image has featured on a postage stamp and video games. His rags-to-riches story of a young man who once lived on the hard scrabble Manila streets is inspiring, a source of motivation Pacquiao routinely draws upon, "I can't imagine the boy who was starving and sleeping on the street has become what I am now," said the eight-division world champion known as Pacman. "I have a good feeling for this fight. "For me, it's about how we can make the fans happy. They are paying big money ... so they deserve to have a good fight." For Mayweather the fight is one that will define his legacy and place among the pantheon of boxing greats. Even if Mayweather were to retire with an unbeaten record there would have always be a question mark hanging over his career if he never clashed with his great Filipino rival. "This fight is about one fighter who is at the top fighting another fighter who is at the top. It's about giving you guys excitement," said Mayweather. "We don't know how this fight is going to play out, but I believe in my skills. I believe I am going to be victorious.
