FGN calls for end to disunity and fratricide

C M Y K

C M Y K

DIMAPUR, MAY 29 (MExN): The Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) today urged that disunity and fratricide among the Naga people must be stopped. “We have written countless articles with all sorts of abusive words accusing each other among ourselves. But we must eschew all these past mistakes and ill practices lest we continue to suffer,” asserted a press note from Captain (rtd) Yirei Lungleng, Kilonser Rali Wali, FGN. The FGN further called for disunity to be replaced by unity and fratricide replaced by fraternity. “Let us build our nation together on the laid foundation,” it added. The FGN reminded that the Naga people have lived a “life of disunity and fratricide for the past fivty five years within the periphery of Divide and Rule Policy of India, the aggressor since the so called Naga People’s Convention (NPC) signed the treasonous 16 Point Agreement with India in 1960.” It further called upon writers, readers, spokesmen and officials to be “equally careful, genuine and constructive,” in order to reduce misunderstandings among the Naga family and prevent untoward incidents.

HYDERABAD, MAY 29 (AP): Dizzying temperatures caused water shortages in thousands of Indian villages and killed hundreds more people over the past day, driving the death toll from a weekslong heat wave to at least 1,826, officials said Friday. Meteorological officials called the heat wave “severe” and warned that it would continue for at least two days across a huge swathe of the South Asian country from Tamil Nadu in the south to the Himalayan foothill state of Himachal Pradesh. Most of those killed by heat-related conditions including dehydration and heat stroke have been in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh

and Telangana, where 100 people died just on Thursday as temperatures hovered at about 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit). Thousands of water tankers were delivering supplies to more than 4,000 villages and hamlets facing acute water shortages in the central state of Maharashtra, state officials told the Press Trust of India news agency. People across India were plunging into rivers, staying in the shade and drinking lots of water to try to beat the heat. Scorched crops and dying wildlife were reported, with some animals succumbing to thirst. Many farmers and construction workers struggling with poverty were still working outdoors

despite the risks. They along with the impoverished elderly were among the most vulnerable. Cooling monsoon rains were expected next week in the south before gradually advancing north. However, forecasting service AccuWeather warned of prolonged drought conditions, with the monsoon likely to be disrupted by a more active typhoon season over the Pacific. “While there will be some rainfall on the region, the pattern could evolve into significant drought and negatively impact agriculture from central India to much of Pakistan,” senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls at AccuWeather said in a statement.

The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) on Friday rejected the High Power Committee (HPC) report constituted to inquire into the alleged irregularities, lapses and loopholes in the conduct of AIPMT, MBBS, BDS, Agriculture and allied courses exams. It also submitted an ultimatum to Chief Minister TR Zeliang against what it termed as “colossal corruption and deprivation of justice by department of technical education.” The ultimatum which was made available to media during a press conference here in Kohima censured the report as one of the biggest disappointments which is ‘shoddy, confusing, inconclusive, biased and lacks commitment.” The apex college students’ body regretted that the committee invited them only for the preliminary round of consultation, and rather, went off tangent, miserably failing to see the tree for the woods. It stated that the whole findings and recommendations of the HPC is “an eyewash and highly compromised, in fact it is frightening and bizarre to note that the report was prepared and written by no other than the Director of DTE.” “The HPC report is copy paste of the very report given by the DTE Director,” the students’ body stated and questioned the principle of the members of the HPC whether they had “surrendered themselves fully

ANCSU DEMANDS • The report of the High Power Committee, February 2015, stands rejected • Immediate recall of students who have been selected for MBBS/BDS illegally • Immediate constitution of CBI enquiry to investigate the conduct and selection of students in various technical courses during the last 10 years. • Remove concerned officials from their responsibilities when the process of enquiry is being conducted. • Punitive actions against the erring officials. to the guidance of the DTE” against whom the students’ had pointed out fingers to. While ventilating its disappointment, the ultimatum said the Fact Finding Committee (FFC) of ANSU has found numerous discrepancies and lapses committed by the DTE, such as misleading notification, lack of communication with other departments, clarity in seat allotment etc. It stated that the most serious incident of 2014 in selections/nominations for various technical courses was the selection of 4 students whose names are not indicated in the declaration of AIPMT results were later offered seats in MBBS & BDS through NSPMT exam. The students’ body said there is no record of Nungsangzulu Walling, Motsuo K Ezung, Reuben Lalrammawi and Aneizo Khruomo appearing in AIPMT. “Their AIPMT marks are imaginary. Hence, this is a manipulation of highest order by the DTE.” ANCSU stated that the DTE was given the task by the CSB to obtain marks of both AIPMT and NSPMT and do necessary selections/nominations accordingly. However the department went several steps ahead by allotting marks to selected “special case students,” who had not even appeared in the exams,

and filched seats from deserving students for a price. It further termed as utterly shocking that the conduct of BSc (Horti) examination and declaration of results in 2014 were under microscopic scrutiny with massive public upheaval and strong students protest, however the concerned officials could blatantly commit “such heinous crimes with impunity and disregard for the future of students.” “Such action displays a strong indication about the DTE’s dubious activities during the past preceding years. With such officers devoid of semblance of integrity and morals in the helm of affairs, there is absolutely no chance for meritorious students of the state, to ever get justice and fairness in achieving their aspirations,” it lamented. In this connection, ANSU placed the 5 point ultimatum to be ratified within 30 days with effect from the day of submission. The students’ body also urged the chief minister to take prompt and immediate action on this matter, failing which, ANSU would be compelled to initiate its own course of action. ANCSU will have series of meeting with the NSF and ENSF at the earliest and address the issue, it was also informed.

Nagaland to do away with Alternative English subject Our Correspondent Kohima | May 29

Director of the State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT), Vipralhou Kesiezie today announced that Nagaland will do away with the Alternative English subject and replace it with ‘Heritage Study’ from Classes VVIII from next academic session. Announcing this during the celebration of International Arts Education Week here today, Kesiezie said this was approved by the State Level Education Committee, 2014.

“This change has been necessitated because of the fact that Alternative English has been introduced in schools in lieu of Mother Tongue although Alternative English is never a substitute of Mother Tongue,” he informed and hoped that introducing this new subject will enable preservation and promotion of Naga cultural values. He claimed almost 90% of Naga students take Alternative English in lieu of their mother tongue, thereby depriving themselves of learning Naga cultural values, including their own lan-

guage. “We hope that by introducing this new subject ‘Heritage Study’ we will be able to inculcate traditional and cultural values of the Nagas,” he said. In this new subject, students will be given opportunity to learn about their own culture and heritage relating to history, folk tales, legends, poems, dances, music, games and sports, tribal ways of life, dresses/attires, food, cultivations etc. Kesiezie further informed that SCERT Nagaland is scheduled to introduce a 2 year diploma in Visual & Performing Arts in DIETs from the next session 2016.

one Ar jawan injured in ambush

Morung Express News Kohima/Dimapur | May 29

One Assam Rifles jawan was injured when an AR convoy was ambushed by unidentified gunmen, suspected to be NSCN (K), at Phesama, Kohima on May 29. The 19 AR convoy, comprising four vehicles, was enroute Jakhama when the ambush occurred near the FCI godown at Phesama, sources said. The injured rifleman, whose identity could not be established, was wounded on the neck.

He was initially admitted to a military hospital before being airlifted to Kolkata, the sources added. The AR jawans retaliated with heavy fire, shooting some 100 rounds, which lasted between 5-10 minutes. There was casualty on the other side in the retaliatory fire, the sources said, though it could not be established. Three of the vehicles managed to shoot their way through, while one (a Maruti Gypsy) remained stranded after capsizing. The sources added that a fleet of

Army vehicles was also behind the AR convoy about half a kilometre away when the ambush occurred. The Army convoy was headed towards Manipur. A massive ‘combing operation’ was launched in the surrounding area in the aftermath. Police recovered twelve 5.56mm and twenty-seven 7.62mm calibre empty shells, including one ‘bullet head’, from the site. After reports of the ambush emerged, the Kohima DC along with the SP and SDPO Kohima also visited the site of the incident. Additional sources informed that movement of traffic was halted in the area for about two hours as the Assam Rifles and police conducted search operations. Meanwhile, the Phesama Village Council (PVC) has condemned the incident. A press release from the PVC questioned the “motive and responsibility of the underground faction to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the area and creating fear psychosis in the minds of the people.” “Such senseless, desperate cowardice act cannot be repeated in future where Naga are tired and striving for peaceful co-existence,” added the press note. The PVC urged every responsible citizen to “denounce such kind of terrorism,” and declared that the “responsible faction will not be cooperated with in future.”

Trial run of shorter route of Agartala-Kolkata bus soon AgArtAlA, MAy 29 (IANS): The trial run of a bus service between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh that would reduce the journey by over 1,000 km will be held on June 1-3, a minister said here on Friday. "As part of the trial run, a bus carrying West Bengal government officials would start from Kolkata on June 1. It will reach Agartala via Bangladesh on June 2 and would return the next day," Transport Minister Manik Dey told reporters. He said West Bengal government's Principal Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay, who will lead the officials during the trial run, informed Tripura's Transport Secretary Samarjit Bhowmik about this in a letter. He said: "We have asked the central government to allow the Tripura government to conduct a similar trial from Agartala to Kolkata via Bangladesh." Agartala via Guwahati is 1,650 km from Kolkata by road, while the distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh is just about 600 km. Tripura's Governor Tathagata Roy earlier said that a direct bus service between Agartala and Kolkata through Bangladesh is expected to be finalised during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Dhaka on June 6-7.

Tripura's transport minister said the state government has been demanding direct bus services between Tripura and other northeastern states and Kolkata through Bangladesh for easy movement of people of the region. "Since March 2010, a series of meetings were held between the officials of the ministries of external affairs and road transport and highways, Tripura and West Bengal governments and concerned organisations. The last meeting in this regard was held at the road transport and highways ministry in New Delhi on May 14," Dey added. "Currently, the Agartala-Dhaka and Dhaka-Agartala bus services are being run four days a week and the periodicity is likely to be increased due to the demand of the Kolkatabound passengers," a Tripura transport department official said. The Agartala-Dhaka bus service started in September 2003. The Kolkata-Dhaka bus service was introduced in July 1999. The Bangladesh government-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation, the Tripura governmentowned Tripura Road Transport Corporation and the West Bengal's West Bengal Road Transport Corporation

are now operating the Agartala-Dhaka, and Kolkata-Dhaka bus services. To introduce the Guwahati-Shillong-Dhaka bus service, trial runs were conducted twice from Assam's main city of Guwahati. Transportation via Bangladesh is much easier as road connectivity is a big factor for the mountainous northeastern states which share boundaries with Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan and China. Before the partition of the country in 1947, the routes of the then East Bengal (now Bangladesh) had been used to ferry men and material to and from northeast India. "For the people of Tripura, southern Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram, the Bangladeshi route is the only secured, easier and cost-effective option to go to Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of India as road, rail and air journeys from this hilly region are otherwise terrible," Barun Saha, a trader in Agartala, told IANS. Hundreds of passengers, including seriously ill patients, job seekers, students, even bridegrooms and tourists, face problems in going to Kolkata and other parts of India in view of the non-availability of air tickets for want of aircraft.

AR to continue to guard Myanmar border New DelhI, MAy 29 (the INDIAN expreSS): The Assam Rifles will continue to man the porous Myanmar border despite a proposal by the Union Home Ministry to replace the paramilitary force with Border Security Force. In a recent meeting between Army chief General Dalbir Singh and Home Secretary LC Goyal, it was decided that Assam Rifles shall continue to be deployed along the Myanmar border as interim measure. The Home Ministry has been pushing for the deployment of BSF along the 1,643 km long border with Myanmar

for the past five years. On Thursday, chief of Joint Intelligence Committee, R N Ravi, held a meeting on the issue. He will submit the report to Union Home Minister. According to sources, the BSF had told the home ministry that at least 42,000 men would have to be recruited if the force had to be deployed along the Myanmar border. Assam Rifles (AR), which already has 25,000 men deployed there, said they would need only 16,000 more men to plug the gaps along the border. “As far as financial implications are concerned, it

Class X CBSE results: NE pass percentage dips

makes sense for the Assam Rifles to continue there, as they would have to recruit only a few thousand additional men. As far as BSF is concerned, new installations and manpower need to be raised. The government does not have that much money to support BSF’s recruitment plan now,” said a senior official of the home ministry. Though an interim decision has been taken to let Assam Rifles continue along Myanmar border, the final decision would be that of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), sources said. India and Myanmar

share an unfenced border of 1,643 km adjoining Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Nagaland (215 km), Manipur (398 km) and Mizoram (510 km) and permit a ‘free movement’ regime upto 16 km across the border. While Assam Rifles functions under the Ministry of Defence, its administrative control is under the Ministry of Home Affairs. “The BSF had a proposal to raise 42 battalions, but it was brought down to 37. Even then the financial implication of raising additional battalions of Assam Rifles is much less than that of the BSF,” said the official.

Socio-economic Caste Census data soon, to slash subsidy

Brief SBI loan approval now goes online MUMBai, May 29 (the hiNDU): Governmentowned lender State Bank of India launched Online Customer Acquisition Solution (OCAS), an online platform to apply for home loans, car loans, education loans and personal loans. The application will help the customers gauge their eligibility and get a quote personalised to their requirement. The customer will instantly get an eapproval on filling the online form. Thereafter, the Bank officials will contact the customer and complete all the loan formalities,” SBI said in a statement. Customers can even upload all necessary documents online, reducing the processing time of their loan. A similar application will shortly also be launched on the mobile platform as well. “India is witnessing one of the highest growth rates of internet users and to cater to this segment SBI has customised this platform for an enhanced customer experience,” the statement added. SBI has been going aggressive on its technology platform, in an attempt to change the way public sector banking is viewed.

India’s GDP grows by 7.3 percent in 2014-15

New Delhi, May 29 (FiNaNcial express): A key hurdle in reducing the wasteful parts of welfare schemes and subsidies will be removed soon with the results of India’s first ever decentralised Socio-economic Caste Census (SECC) launched in 2011 set to be released soon. Official sources told FE a Centre-state consensus on identifying the potential beneficiaries of various social sector schemes, including the ambitious food security programme, will finally be facilitated with the rural development ministry publishing the final SECC lists of all 640 districts of the country in a week or so. These lists being the products of comprehensive door-to-door enumeration across the country are more reliable gauges of de-

privation than the data furnished by the National Sample Survey Organisation or the National Accounts Statistics on which poverty estimates hitherto hinged on, experts feel. Since the SECC lists have been compiled relatively recently, they also address the issues of data lag to a great extent (the latest NSSO survey-based poverty figures, for instance, pertained to 2011-12). While the Narendra Modi government uses the direct benefit transfer scheme for reducing diversion of subsidised LPG meant for households to the commercial sector, little headway has been made in extending it to disburse the subsidies on food, fertiliser and kerosene. This is primarily because the

beneficiaries could not be identified by the Centre and states. In the case of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) roll-out, for instance, several deadlines for a pan-India execution have already been missed as many states are going slow on putting the beneficiary lists on line. At present only 12 states have rolled out food security scheme either fully or partially. Sources said that in order to force states to be ready for the NFSA implementation, the Union food ministry might decide to supply foodgrains to states that are yet to be ready with beneficiary lists at above poverty line (APL) rates — rice at Rs 7.90 per kg and wheat at Rs 6.10 a kg — against food security entitlement of rice and wheat at Rs 3 and Rs 2

per kg, respectively. The food ministry has already communicated to the states that additional grain allocation to them for distribution to both BPL and APL families would stopped unless the food security law is implemented. This followed a directive from the Prime Minister’s Office. The expert group headed by C Rangarajan in July 2014 came out with an estimate that 30.9% of the rural population and 26.4% of the urban population were below the poverty line in 2011-12, with an all-India ratio of 29.5% . The Rangarajan formula, which differed from the Tendulkar methodology adopted by the former Planning Commission primarily in introducing relativity in estimation of deprivation, showed higher

prevalence of poverty than the estimate based on the Tendulkar methodology, which put rural and urban poverty ratios in 201112 at 25.7% and 13.7%, respectively. The rates of poverty reduction seen by the two, however, haven’t differed much. The Rangarajan methodology was based on the principle that the poverty line should be “based on certain normative levels of adequate nourishment, clothing, house rent, conveyance and education and a behaviourally determined level of other non-food expenses”. The SECC, analysts feel, would be a superior tool to identify the beneficiaries of the welfare schemes. So far, final SECC lists have been published of only 200 districts while another 424 have come out with the draft lists.

New Delhi, May 29 (iaNs): The Indian economy grew by 7.3 percent during 2014-15 from the 4.7 percent increase in the previous fiscal, government data showed on Friday. The gross domestic product (GDP) -- which is a measure of the total value of goods and services produced in the country -- broke the subfive percent growth barrier after the last two consecutive years. According to the ministry of statistics and programme implementation, the GDP at constant (2011-12) prices in the financial year 2014-15 is now estimated at Rs.106.44 lakh crore -- showing a growth rate of 7.3 percent over the 2013-14 figure of Rs.99.21 lakh crore. In 2012-13, the GDP climbed by 4.5 percent. The data also showed that the economy expanded by 7.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014-14, from 6.6 percent rise in the September-December quarter. The GDP had increased by 8.4 percent and 6.7 percent in the second and first quarters of 2014-15, respectively.

Kochi, May 29 (ecoNoMic tiMes): Hit by a slump in prices of tea and rubber, the plantation industry in Kerala has suggested a series of measures including a three year moratorium on taxes, a single window clearance system for diversification projects under the permission to use 5% land for activities other than plantations and purchase of one lakh kg of tea a week from Kochi auctions by the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (KSCSC). The Association of Planters of Kerala (APK) said the tea industry in the state is going through one of the worst crisis faced in the past 100 years of its existence. The average auction price realised by tea produced from Kerala in the current financial year is Rs 95.59 per kg when the cost of production is hovering above Rs 120 per kg. For every kg of Kerala tea sold in the auction market, the producer is

suffering a loss of Rs 25 per kg. Even though the average price of Kerala tea for the year 2015 is Rs 95.59 per kg, the actual price realised by the grower is less as nearly 90% of tea produced in Kerala is CTC grade whose average price is only Rs 93.75 per kg. The large tea producers like Kanan Devan Hill Plantations, Harrisons Malayalam etc., who are known to carry out cultural operations meticulously, are forced to curtail cultural operations to a large extent due to the severe cash flow crunch. Some of the estates have decided to extend the plucking rounds in order to reduce the cost and also the quantity of production, APK chairman C Vinayaraghavan said. The small and medium tea growers, who sell the green leaf directly to tea factories, started abandoning the operations altogether.

said, without detailing how much the company will invest. Royal Enfield plans to spend 5 billion rupees ($78 million) in 2015 on its global expansion, building two new technology centres, of which one is in Britain, and increasing its Indian production capacity by 50 percent to 450,000 vehicles. The company last year started selling the motorbikes in Colombia, which Lal says could soon become its biggest market outside India, and it now plans to enter

Indonesia and Thailand. It is also looking at ways to enter Brazil, though high import duties mean it will need to look at setting up its own plant or partnering with a local manufacturer. “Eventually, if we want to be a big player in Brazil it is inevitable to manufacture,” said Lal, adding it will need to consider a similar plan for southeast Asia, due to high import costs. The bike maker, which supplies India’s police, currently has more than a 95% market share in

The first Parents Teachers Association (PTA) meeting, since the establishment of GHSS Kiphire in 1972, was held today where hundreds of parents, well wishers, student leaders, NGOs and stake holders came together at the school premises to join hands to uplift the quality of education especially in government schools in the district. Representatives from United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) while taking part in the discussion at the meeting expressed dismay to learn that the GHSS is running without any library. “It is a deprivation to student community to dig deeper into the knowledge and is confined only to textbooks,” USSC stated. “It is the moral responsibility of each parent and teacher to shape the younger generation so that the highest standard of education should be imparted to the students,” the representatives added. While appreciating the sacrifices rendered by the teaching community, USSC asked teachers and the administration of GHSS to retrospect and take corrective measures as the school, over the years, has

not been producing good results especially in HSLC exams. USSC assured all possible help to uplift the standard of the GHSS and also promised to issue textbooks to Classes 9 and 10 to GHSS in the next academic session 2016. Assuring all possible help, parents who attended the meeting also expressed their deep concern on the health of the GHSS as the school was not reaching expectations. They asked the administration and the teaching faculties to give more effort so that the school can become one of the best. The meeting also decided to organize Parents Day every year. Parent’s Teachers Association (PTA) was also formed. The joint area students union also took the responsibility to introduce a mailbox for the GHSS. During the programme, Ville Rhetso, Counselor FPA India, lamented that in many cultures menstruation is treated as something negative, shameful or dirty and reminded that menstruation is a normal biological process and a key sign of reproductive health. Briefing on how menstruation occurs in a girl body and symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, she stated that it is crucial for every young adolescent girl to be educated on matters relating to menstruation, hygiene and management. However, it is seen that limited access to information both at home and in schools results in many young girls having very little knowledge about what is happening to their bodies when they menstruate, and how to deal with it. Moreover, many girls go through periods very secretively and don’t really bother to figure out if their practices are hygienic or not. Therefore, stating that the time has come to break the silence around menstruation, she urged upon the girls to start the conversation around menstruation unashamedly and even

Where FIFA's Power Stops: Protecting Workers

B

5 potential consequences of UEFA pulling out of FIFA

The Atlantic

efore Wednesday, the power of top officials in soccer’s international governing body seemed to observe few legal boundaries. That was the upshot of a 47-count indictment against nine FIFA officials—covered in more detail by my colleague David Graham—seven of whom were just arrested at a five-star hotel in Zurich. Meanwhile, the Swiss attorney general is leading a separate investigation into another alleged abuse of power: the suspected “criminal mismanagement and money laundering” surrounding the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, which were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively. Yet perhaps most troubling are the ways FIFA hasn’t been using its power. To build the stadiums, transportation, and luxury hotels required for the 2022 tournament, Qatar needs workers, and immigrants make up some 90 percent of Qatar’s workforce. Under the country’s kafala labor system, employers control migrant workers’ legal rights, including the right to find a new job or leave the country. Tek Bahadur Gurung, Nepal’s labour minister, spoke to The Guardianafter Nepalis in Qatar were barred from returning home to visit victims of April’s earthquake: “Nothing will change for migrant workers until FIFA and its rich sponsors insist on it,” he said. "We are a small, poor country and these powerful organizations are not interested in listening to us.” But FIFA’s response has been to keep calm and confirm that Qatar won’t lose the tournament. Ger-

Thariq Amir

many’s member of the FIFA executive board, Theo Zwanzinger, feigns helplessness in the face of worker abuses. "This feudal system existed before the World Cup," he said. "What do you expect of a football organization? FIFA is not the lawmaker in Qatar." It’s true that Qatar’s abuse of migrant workers predates the country’s being awarded World Cup hosting duties in 2010. That announcement brought attention to the conditions migrant workers face in the country, and in response to international criticism, Qatar’s government promised limited reforms last year. But a new Amnesty International report found that the oil-rich Gulf nation is dragging its feet: “On the crucial issues of the exit permit, the restriction on changing employers in Qatar’s kafala system protection of domestic workers and the freedom to form or join trade unions—there has been no progress whatsoever.” Qatar’s public-relations efforts have fallen flat too. The prime minister’s office

invited a group of journalists from the BBC to check on what the government itself called “sub-standard labor accommodations.” When the BBC tried to interview a group of workers from Nepal on their own, they werearrested and interrogated. Off the building sites, conditions are no better. "We wake at four in the morning, get to work at about six and work until five in the evening. It takes an hour to get back to the camp. My room there isn't fit for humans—six of us share and there's no place even to sit and eat,” Imran, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi, told the BBC. An in-depth 2013 report from The Guardian called the abuses faced by Nepalese tantamount to “modernday slavery.” It’s hard for a multinational institution that made $5.7 billion from 2011 to 2014 to play powerless. During the 2010 World Cup, FIFA convinced hosts South Africa to set up dedicated courts to hand out swift sentences to thieves who might ruin visiting fans’ experiences. FIFA pushed Brazil to serve al-

cohol in stadiums during the 2014 tournament, despite the country’s decadeold law banning the drinks at games for safety reasons. For the sake of this World Cup in Qatar—where summer temperatures can soar above 100 degrees—FIFA moved the 2022 tournament from summer to winter. But no such influence has been wielded to improve the conditions of those building the stadiums. Never mind that the French-Algerian soccer player Zahir Belounis was recently, by the same labor system that governs the Nepali migrants, trapped in Qatar for two years after a pay dispute with his team—as yet, pressuring the 2022 host to treat foreign employees better is for FIFA a step too far. It’s too soon to tell whether today’s arrests will bring real change for the 2022 tournament—it would take a huge internal shakeup for FIFA to agree to a new vote, or choose a new host. But it is clear which organization connects, however indirectly, mistreated Nepali laborers to a luxury Swiss hotel a world away. FIFA.

FIFA’s role is diminished With no UEFA within its ranks, FIFA will lose a huge amount of authority and credibility. Jerome Champagne voiced his concerns of FIFA becoming a diminished organization if it does not reform its structures and amend its practices. Sponsors will, rightly so, reassess their relationship with FIFA and possibly avoid signing new contracts with the world governing body. FIFA competitions such as the Club World Cup, the Confederations Cup and of course the World Cup without UEFA teams would not be as attractive to television companies, worldwide audiences and potential sponsors. The hit to FIFA’s pocket would be huge and that’s not to mention the possibility of the world’s governing body taking legal action to try and redress any perceived imbalance. However if FIFA did become a lesser player, then the lack of finances could further lead to other confederations considering their membership within the organization. UEFA to become the de facto world body? What UEFA brings to the table is prestige and money. The winners of the last three World Cups have come from Europe. CONMEBOL do boast the super-teams Argentina and Brazil as well as other talented nations but don’t possess the financial clout of UEFA. G l a m o r mat c h e s, friendly and competitive, between Europe’s and South America’s giants

laws? Would UEFA go their own way and form their own body dedicated to the creation of new laws? If UEFA did withdraw from FIFA, would that oblige the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish boards to pull out from IFAB? It’s unlikely to lead to two separate codes of association football (a la rugby union and rugby league) but nations within UEFA would be bound to playing by their governing body’s rules whilst the rest of the world could adopt a FIFA president Sepp Blatter next to UEFA President Michel Platini. different standard. will most certainly be im- to host the World Cup. Need to step up fight against smokeless killer Use your emotions to become productive

rapped inside betel leaves and placed in the corner of the mouth, chewing tobacco has been a practice in India for centuries. While there is certainly an increased awareness in terms of the harmful effects this could have on health, the medical fraternity is very much concerned about the growing number of cancerous lesions in the mouth. The prestigious scientific journal Lancet has placed India at the second position -next to China - in terms of those consuming smokeless tobacco. Various forms of looseleaf chewed tobacco are commonly consumed in the Indian subcontinent. Smokeless tobacco use is particularly prevalent in India, Bangladesh and among women in Thailand. What is less known to most people in India is that more than 4,000 different chemicals have been found in tobacco and over 60 of these chemicals are known carcinogens. Almost 30 percent of the Indian population older than age 15 use some form of tobacco. Men use more smoked tobacco while women are more likely to use the chewed variety. In case of paan with tobacco, the main ingredients of paan are the betel leaf, areca nut (supari), slaked lime (chuna), and catechu (katha). Sweets and other condiments are also added for flavour. The varieties of paan are named for the different strengths of tobacco in it. It is a myth that

A

chewing tobacco with betel leaf is not harmful. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has rightly established that people who chew both the betel leaf and the areca nut along with tobacco have a higher risk of damaging their gums and having cancers of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and stomach. Khaini is yet another common chewing tobacco seen mostly among the women folk. Dried tobacco leaves are crushed and mixed with slaked lime and chewed as a quid. The practice of keeping the quid in the mouth between the cheeks and gums causes most cancers of the gums - the most common form of mouth cancer in India. Let us pause and take a look at a case study here. Raghav Sharma (name changed) was diagnosed

with stage IV mouth cancer. A road-side vendor in Delhi, he earned his living out of selling vegetables. Sharma underwent surgery and had to get the central portion of his lower jaw removed. For this, he gave away all that he had to save himself. Now, the same man has knocked the door of the hospital again with two marble-sized yellowish lumps in his gums. The ugly dreadful cancer is back again with a vengeance and the doctors have no other option but to go for a second surgery. There is an urgent need for increasing awareness on the ill effects of chewing tobacco. Interestingly, there are misconceptions that tobacco has germicidal compositions that could cleanse the teeth. Mishri is one of the kind which is applied on the teeth like a tooth powder. In due course, the in-

dividual gets addicted to the usage and becomes totally dependent on the product. The user also ends up damaging his teeth and gums. Gudakhu, again used commonly by women, is a paste of tobacco and sugar molasses and involves direct application of tobacco to the gums, thus increasing the risk of cancer of the gums. A campaign that empowers cancer survivors to tell their stories to influence policymakers and raise awareness among other tobacco users about the damaging effects of tobacco on health is the need of the hour. Besides cancer of mouth, use of tobacco, in the smoke or smokeless form, may lead to other serious diseases including heart, lung, circulatory diseases and stroke. Once diagnosed with cancer, the genetic damage is irreversible.

Dr Josh Davis

lthough we may not always be aware of it, many of the tasks we perform—whether we’re answering a colleague’s email or engaging in a tough negotiation with a supplier—elicit emotions: excitement, anger, pride, boredom, uncertainty, and so on. The reason emotions have a surprisingly powerful effect on our performance is that emotions have adaptive value—they can help us cope and respond to the situation at hand. For example, Beyonce was once quoted as saying, “Every time I get on stage I’m nervous [beforehand]. I’m actually really scared when I’m not nervous.” If she’s not nervous, she explained, she does not perform at her best. Even emotions that we perceive as negative, such as anxiety, are great tools for getting our minds energized and focused on the task ahead. Anxiety: Get Pumped for a Presentation Anxiety and readiness are physiologically almost the same, my father—a psychiatrist—explained to me when I was a teenager and felt anxious about some upcoming big challenge. Anxiety is a way of revving us up to be on high alert and ready to react to whatever may come our way—for example, in a presentation or a sales call. It’s easy to want to wish the feeling of anxiety away, but when you understand its benefits, you can be grateful for it. The next time you find yourself feeling nervous, see how it goes to say to yourself, No, I’m not nervous. I’m alert and ready to react.

Feeling good: Boost Creativity A positive mood is especially useful for discovering new insights, being creative, being less critical when making decisions, and making snap decisions. Positive emotions can lead to easier collaboration. If you want to let unimportant things go more easily— look with a less critical eye—a positive mood can help. If it’s time to get creative, I suggest getting into a positive emotional state. When you need to make decisions fast and there won’t be time to deliberate, see if you can enter that situation in a positive mood. Notice whether you’re in a good mood when you come to a decision point. Or close your eyes and remember something that makes you generally happy—a favorite TV show, learning, chatting with a friend, relaxing for a few minutes with a book, having a good laugh. Remembering something emotionally positive helps bring about that positive emotion.

Anger: Take Action Feeling mad is unusual among negative emotions in that it facilitates approach-oriented behavior, or actions that move us toward a person, object, or idea. For example, a store owner considers increasing prices in order to increase profits, which she badly wants. But by doing so, she will run the risk of violating the trust she’s built with her customers. She’s afraid that increasing prices will lead to customer backlash, which she wants to avoid. Tapping into a source of anger, rather than fear, may help. This sounds surprising: When I coach someone on emotion regulation, they often want to get better at controlling their anger, not eliciting it! But one option is for the store owner to recognize when she’s angry for some other reason and consider it a good moment to consider pricing options. She may ruminate on how unfair it is that her profit potential is held hostage to the whims of shoppers who don’t understand the products she sells.

The next time you’re afraid to take a risk even though you know it’s the right thing to do, consider getting a little angry. Sadness: Think Critically This emotion has several surprising effects. When we’re feeling sad we tend to be less biased in decision making—thinking a little more slowly and deliberately about whom to trust, for example. We are also likely to act more fairly and less selfishly. Plus, we err on the side of healthy skepticism, helping us to avoid being too gullible. And we’re more apt to put in the effort to make a message persuasive. All in all. it seems that when we need to slow down, be thoughtful, and think critically, sadness can be a real resource. So if you’re on the receiving end of a sales pitch, you may want to go ahead and think about how much you miss your childhood dog. And on the other hand, if you’re feeling super happy, you may want to avoid taking a sales pitch and use that positive emotion for something good instead— like your creative work.

7 Reality Shows & The Music Scene In Nagaland Morung Youth Express

gift hampers, music videos, recording deals and a few months of glory or do they want something more than that? Don't you think they can use the voting money to do all those things? Get vocal teachers, grooming class, recording, and music videos? No they are there because they need guidance, mentoring, and the experience, exposures etc. because they are new and blind, and don’t know where to go & what to do. Now many people do complain about the voting cards system etc., I say it’s fine with me because they need revenue to run the business and yes it is a business at the end of the day and trust me, the production cost is huge FYI but the problem here is, most of the time, money is more important than the goal for most of the organizers honestly. And this is one of the reasons why the shows are getting more unpopular season by season and I believe TRP also goes down every season. My suggestion is why not give more reasons to the audience to come back again by making it more interesting every year. I want to request the organizers to think big and out of the box and make the goal or vision more important than the profit -look at it as a longterm business. And ultimately more revenue will follow once the show is a hit. The audience will judge the show according THE ORGANIZERS to the final outcome, which is after the show. I believe you The problem: I am approached almost guys are still not making use every year to judge in these of the whole potential of what competitions but when I ask your show can do. the organizers their vision and what their plans are after the The Solution: I know that as an organizer season is over, most of them do not have much concrete plans there are so many obstacles besides the prize money, re- and challenges in organizing cording deals, music video these shows. And also instead and few gift hampers and yes of appreciating you for the efmost of all, platforms to these fort you put, people always say unknown artiste or singers. negative things instead of parNow my question is, are these ticipating and above that there artistes competing for money, are very less big sponsors or ewspapers, Billboard, Magazines, posters, social Media - everywhere I see advertisements for "Reality Shows" these days. Every single competition with the same motive - to promote, explore and give platform to the hidden and untapped talents. Being an artiste myself, I have been watching and studying the market for all these years, but unfortunately, it pains me to say that once the competitions are over, there is hardly any participant or winner who makes it big or carries on with his/her dreams. I can only remember and see a few of the names of those who have made it, though still struggling, while the rest perish slowly after their moment of glory, and most of them stop dreaming altogether. Here are few of the points why I think Reality shows in Nagaland are unable to create wider avenues and more opportunities for the artiste to be able to make use the most of it and also why most of the participants fail to make it big. I am not here to blame the participants nor the organizers but I am writing this with the hope that it will help improve our reality shows so that they will give more platform and recognition to the artiste and also help the artiste achieve bigger & better goals in the days to come.

T

Some words from a musician’s heart proper TV channels, FM radios to help you reach out to the masses. Now the competition is high since every fortnight, some new reality show or the other is coming up, so it’s up to you to make your show better and give the audience the chance to wait for your show every year. I am not here to teach you how to do your shows, since you guys know it better than I with all the years of experience but am here to give, my insight on what to do after the show. According to me I think Instead of giving prize money, why not use that money and promote the artiste. The reason they are here is because they need guidance and if you yourself are blind, how do you help them? Do some research; do some vital networking before you plan out your season. For example instead of giving the winner the whole money, take out 50k from the prize money and give it to professionals producers/songwriters to write and compose songs for them according to their genre, maybe a song or two and then use another 50k to make a decent music video. Now take 50k and use it for publicity on social medias like Facebook, YouTube etc. for a month intensively and send the music video to all the leading music channels and blogs etc. Now do a pocket road shows around Nagaland and later book places like Hard Rock Cafe, Blue Frog or any pubs, church, cafés around India to open up for some bands, with 2 Lakhs do the transportation, food lodging etc. Now with another 50k print some few CD's & merchandise to carry around with the artiste. This is just a simple example; you can do more than these. Send them for vocal lessons, Grooming, fashion, photoshoot etc.

Now offer these two prizes options to the contestant and am sure most of them will chose the second one. The main problem for me is that the organizers after the hectic season is over they want to take rest and they care less for the artiste. Why not form two team or hire some PR people with the prize money and let them handle the after result activities. You got nothing to lose. THE CONTESTANTS / ARTISTE/ WINNERS The Problem: Why do you participate in the first place? Is it because you want fame, money, a platform etc.? Most of the artistes started acting like Superstars even before they hit the stage. Mind you, in the studio you can re edit and undo your mistakes, but on stage it's just one go. Make it or break it! Most of the participants get the platform and recognition during the show but most of them are forgotten after the show is over. There are just few names of those who have made it to the top and remains in people’s heart. How many of you remember the names of the winners of the many reality shows in Nagaland? Very few of you I guess, or may be none. Do you participate to get fame just during that short period? No I don't think so. You are wasting your parents, family, friends, well-wishers money and above that your precious time and if you don't have dedication, please don't participate from the very beginning. Most of you do it because it's cool, because you think you can sing and dance. But it is beyond that, you need real passion, hard work and dedication and wisdom to remain in this business.

The solution: The platform is a big opportunity so makes the most of it, think beyond the competition, use the show as a ladder, and reach out to the maximum. But the ugly truth is you are still in many ways a nobody, and even though you participate or win any competition, that is just the starting stage and your first steppingstone. Don't wait for opportunities, make use of the platform and recognition you got and go and grasp it. Humble yourself and look around for shows, try your best to promote yourself as much as you can, initially. Once you are known, people will start looking for you. But now dude you are nobody, and just because you have few thousand likes on facebook, and your few family, friends, and well wishers know you, it doesn't make you famous. And I am sure your dream and goal is bigger than that. Think BIG, why target only your people, your locality, your district, your state ... Think national, think Globally. Never be satisfied with what you know, learn and learn and learn. Professionalism comes with experience. THE PUBLIC The Problem: One of the biggest enemy of the artiste in Nagaland is the PUBLIC. My manager told me once if you make a song and impress Nagas, you can impress the whole world, it's the most challenging thing to do because people fail to appreciate talents always. The most popular artistes in Nagaland & outside Nagaland are the ones with the biggest critics, talking about Tetseo Sisters, Nise Meruno, and Abiogenesis etc. As an artiste, my band and I we get more support outside Nagaland than here at home.

Our illegal public buildings

he Persons with disabilities (Equal o p p o r t u n i t i e s, P ro t e c t i o n o f Rights and Full participation) Act, 1996 enacted by the Government of India on 1 January 1996 is a beautiful piece of work. It is a major move towards inclusion of members of the society who have different disabilities into public life. The Act promotes what it terms a “barrier-free environment” for persons with physical disabilities so that they can be part of the social mainstream. It gives guidelines for the construction of ramps in all public buildings, kerbs and slopes on the pavements and auditory signals at traffic light signals for the visually impaired. Public buildings are to be fitted with toilets for the disabled members of society. All these are part of the standard safety requirements for the “access needs of diverse disability groups, such as persons

with mobility, speech, hearing and visual impairments.” It takes into account their “safety, convenience and usability.” By this standard, our public buildings are all illegally constructed as there are no provisions to give a barrier-free environment to people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users. Even in 2013, the Raj Bhavan did not have any of these requirements in place. (I hope this has been taken care of since then). Leaving aside government buildings, the churches too are quite impervious to this need. Elderly members with mobility problems are excluded from participating in church services simply because our beautiful church buildings do not have access facilities for a wheelchair user or a person who uses a walker.

In this day and age, after many years of celebrating Disabled persons Days, we have no excuses any more for not having better access to our public buildings. It won’t cost very much to construct a ramp for a

wheelchair user. Barriers and handholds will help both the disabled and the elderly. The lack of will in educational institutions and public offices, and churches to make their buildings more accessible says a lot about our mindset. It is sadly, a mind-set that sees the physically impaired as incapable of participating in intellectual discourse with the rest of society. I quote from Diethono Nakhro’s blog on this matter: “Do you know that

there are hundreds of our children who are completely marginalised and unable to get even basic education? These are children with various kinds of disabilities. Some of these disabilities may be visible, others not. Physical barriers, attitudinal barriers, communication barriers and numerous other obstacles effectively ensure that a child with disability in our land has no chance of ever going to school, ever participating in activities or learning the things that their non-disabled peers take for granted.” Writing from personal experience, she sensitively brings out the need for Naga society to become more disabledfriendly in the public spaces. This is a voice that needs to be heard as there are not enough voicing the plight of the disabled.

Coming back to our mind-set, things tend to happen only if there is the threat of a fine from the government hanging over our heads. I don’t for a moment feel wicked for suggesting this: Seeing that all our public buildings are violating “The Persons with Disabilities (Equal opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full participation) Act 1996” the government is within its rights to send a directive out for the construction of facilities that comply with the Act. The directives of the Act are wide-ranging, and extend to non-discrimination in transport on roads too. The countries that are disabled-friendly have buses equipped with facilities for wheelchair users to board public buses in safety. How hard could it be to make our public buildings more accessible? Can churches please lead the way in this noble undertaking?

The Other Side of the Moon & The Odd Couple: A Review

Book Review

I

Vishü Rita Krocha

t is always exciting for a book lover to get hold of a new book. Especially if it is a newly launched title. “The Other Side of the Moon & The Odd Couple”, consisting of two short stories, written by Petevilie Chasie, and published by the Heritage Publishing House is one such book I had the pleasure of reading. The stories carry very apt titles, with characters, unmistakably drawn from the ordinary life that the Naga society is quite familiar with. Both stories have that element of love, which is a universal feeling that anybody can relate to. This particular theme runs through both

the stories, but in different ways, giving it an interesting touch. Also with its setting in Nagaland, the stories are naturally interwoven with the very Naga culture, which would enable even an outsider to have a glimpse of it, and for a Naga to fully enjoy the familiar environment that the stories lead you into. As the former Principal of St.Xavier’s College, Mumbai, Rev. Fr. Joe Dias says of the book“The stories are interesting; it could have taken place in reality”, there is every possibility that the instances and circumstances, which the Author portrays in the stories, could have happened in reality. The book is perfect for light

reading, and I am quite certain that many readers would find the stories compelling. I would, however be denying the book an honest review if I fail to mention the part, which, I also consider, is of outmost importanceEditing. It would have been a first great book had that part been given the due importance it deserves. But that’s really not to say, I didn’t enjoy the book. If one can overlook the typos and errors, you can actually end up enjoying “The Other Side of the Moon & The Odd Couple.” The book, priced only at Rs. 200 is certainly worth your time and money, just as John Ruskin says, “If a book is worth reading, it is worth buying.”

People always find fault no matter how you perform out here, the worst thing is they started judging about your lifestyles too. They fail to recognize the good things and rather point out the little mistakes and always find a way to discourage you. They troll an artiste thinking that it’s fun and cool to laugh at someone but they fail to realize that they are killing them slowly and silently. Be proud of our accent, as long as people understand your English or can communicate it's ok. Why do you never laugh at German, French, Jamaican, Spanish, Russian speaking English in their own accent but always laugh at some artiste because he or she has Sema, Ao, Chakesang, Angami, Konyak etc. accent?? Be different at least, &be proud of it. Most of the artistes are not from good educational backgrounds and above that our English teachers those days equally spoilt our dictions and pronunciations. Please go and help them instead of mocking them. The public should know that you always end up comparing us with the west, but remember that we are like 40-50 years (or more) behind them in almost everything. But you fail to recognize the struggle and hardship that went through to be where they are today. We still have a long way to go, we are just starting and infact the first generation to take music outside and making Music as a career, and if you continue to bitch and pull us down like that, congratulations we will always be where we are. The only platform to earn money for an artiste is live shows these days because people don't buy music anymore. But even live shows in Nagaland always run at a loss because the public doesn’t come out to watch and also for lack of corporate sponsorships, while the production costs go higher every year. You will be

shocked to know the production cost to bring up a show – Lights, Sound, Generators, Stage, chairs, publicity etc. The funny fact is that the organizers pay more to the production than the artiste who always get peanut or nothing at all most of the times. So most of the organizers are scared to organize concerts and it is often very hard for artistes to organize their own shows. The solution: First of all, learn to appreciate the talents and try not to judge much, instead correct us personally and advice us to be better. If you have criticism kindly give solution also. Support us by coming to our shows, buy our music. And the most important of all, try to promote and spread words about us, share our music to your friends etc. around the world. I was so encouraged to learn that Assamese, Mizo and Meitei communities residing overseas, organize shows and invite their own local artistes to come and perform, but unfortunately I have never experienced any initiative like that by our people living outside the country. We cannot do it on our own; we need each other to promote our talents - our artistry. Please help us. Music scene in Nagaland is almost dead and only few of us are struggling and working hard towards our dream, so please, PLEASE DON’T KILL US. Lastly I am not writing this article targeting any Organization or individuals, but if I hurt your sentiments unknowingly I am sorry but I hope this small write up will help some artistes or organizers to do better and even encourage the public to support us more in the days to come. Thank you for reading, Kuknalim! Alobo Naga Singer/composer

Intelligence is anti-evolutionary Nury Vittachi

new island appeared off the coast of Japan and scientists are watching it to see evolution at work. So I was told. I was a bit dubious. Doesn't evolution take a while? The reader who sent me the report, Sunita Chau, admitted that the only biological entity on the island of Nishinoshima so far was bird poop. I suppose one can imagine bird poop evolving into extremely primitive live forms such as bacteria, single-celled micro-organisms, and Fox News viewers, for example. She said she reckoned that nationalist politicians in some countries probably shared 99 percent of their DNA with bird poop. To do my due diligence, I phoned a scien-

tist, who castigated me for making the common assumption that human intelligence was the pinnacle of evolution. Intelligence is an anti-evolutionary trait, he said, quoting numerous studies. That makes sense, if you think about it. The most powerful people in human society are rock stars, builders, footballers, supermodels, stockbrokers et al, folk whose intelligence levels are too often roughly level with that of an average novelist's colonic microfloral bacteria. In contrast, people who actually have big brains are writing novels or teaching math and not earning enough money to rub two coins together to keep warm, let alone marry and spread their DNA. If humans are not evolution's zenith, what is? One colleague nominated sharks. They do nothing

at all except eat, sleep, reproduce and occasionally star in movies. A second said it was domestic dogs: "We feed them and clean up their poop in return for nothing but love and affection." A third said catowners feed and clean up the poop of cats "in return for nothing but disdain and aloofness". Cats win. Retreating to my inbox, I found a reader had sent a web link to a news report about a woman who accidentally shot herself when trying to take a "selfie" while holding a gun to her head. A web-search led me to a New Scientist report that several studies showed that human intelligence was falling rather than rising. All this could be good news for the long-term survival of the human race. So let's all do our bit. Avoid the natural temptation to overthink things.

Suffering from ‘Piku’ syndrome? Don’t sit on it I

f you ask about the one thing that Amitabh Bachchan-starrer and now a Rs.100-crore-club member ‘Piku’ has done to the Indian masses, apart from entertaining them, is bringing into the public domain a topic that is taboo in social conversations but that almost everyone experiences or has been a chronic sufferer: constipation. According to Deepak Lahoti, senior consultant (gastroenterology) at Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, the Indian squat position is the best to beat the morning blues (which, in fact, actor Irrfan Khan suggests to Big B in ‘Piku’ too). “It is more effective than the western chair position to maintain a healthier bowel movement, especially if you raise your knees towards your chest,” Lahoti told IANS. Yogesh Batra, director and senior consultant (gastroenterology) at BLK Super Specialty Hospital in the capital, agrees. The reason behind this is simple. The acute angle present between the rectum and the anal canal gets straightened

and there is external pressure applied over the anterior abdominal wall for the smooth release of the stool. Another tool in your armory to tackle constipation is to change your diewt. “Oats and high-fibre diet helps in tackling mild-to-moderate constipation. However, in case of severe constipation, you need to seek expert advice,” said Manish Kak, consultant gastroenterology at Ghaziabad’s Columbia Asia Hospital. Other than this, drinking two to three litres of water every day, maintaining an exercise regime with yoga or jogging or a walk in the morning helps. Alcohol, stress and fried foods need to be avoided. The key to defeat constipation is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Sitting for long hours and not moving – in office or at home – can result in constipation,” Lahoti noted. “If you ease yourself, you will be relieved faster. Do remember that in the western world (among predominantly meat eaters), people may not pass stool up to a week without any discomfort,” Batra points out.

IIT-Madras reprimands students’ body that criticised Modi & saffronisation

Chennai, May 29 (The indian express): The Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle (APSC), a student association in IIT-Madras has been de-recognised by the management following an anonymous complaint to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) that alleged that the body has been criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his policies and Hindus, besides raising caste issues. The student body was banned by the dean of students, Sivakumar M Srinivasan, on May 24 following a letter from MHRD dated May 15 inquiring about complaints raised against APSC. One of the leaders of APSC said they have been taking stands against caste discrimination, Hindi imposition and beef ban. “We tried to expose the Brahmanical tendencies present in IIT Madras. These stands did not go down well with the institute administration. Our administration is already filled with regressive forces supporting superstitions and events against theory of evolution within the campus. APSC brought out pamphlets against the attempt to spread such lies in institute. Dean of students told us that Brahmanical rituals and caste system cannot be criticised as it hurts the sentiments of caste Hindus. He went on to say that even scientific research if it hurts the sentiments of a huge chunk of people should not be pursued and published. IIT-Madras seems to be in a sad state of affairs where scientific temper and social justice are being curtailed but superstitions and brah-

The anonymous letter also sought action against APSC for issuing posters and pamphlets against MHRD circulars for separate dining for vegetarians and use of Hindi in IITs. The letter also complained to MHRD against a lecture on the

Responding to the anonymous complaint, Prisca Mathew, an MHRD under secretary sent a letter to the Director of IIT-M Madras seeking comments of the management on issues raised by the anonymous letter, eventually leading to the ban of the organisation. APSC was created as an independent student body in April 2014 by a group of students to promote Ambedkar–Periyar thoughts and to initiate debates on socio-economicpolitical issues and culture within academic fraternity. Smuggling of tobacco persists despite efforts: WHO new delhi, May 29 (ians): The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday said the smuggling of tobacco in southeast Asia was thriving despite stringent laws enacted by countries to control tobacco consumption. WHO's southeast Asia director Poonam Khetrapal said: "In the southeast Asia region, many countries have porous borders that provide easy opportunity for the smuggling of tobacco products." "All southeast Asian countries have enacted stringent laws to control tobacco consumption - both on pricing and sale of tobacco products in-country as well as against import of foreign brands - and despite these efforts, there is still a thriving trade in smuggled tobacco products," Khetrapal said in a statement.

Her comments came two days ahead of the 'World No Tobacco Day' that falls on May 31. Noting that the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control was adopted by many countries in November 2012, Khetrapal urged all the member states to speed up their process of ratifying or acceding to the protocol. She said there was a need to make a consolidated effort to put a break on these illegal transactions. According to the WHO, tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year globally and is likely to kill over 8 million people every year by 2030 if the situation is not brought under control. It also said more than 80 percent of these preventable deaths would occur in low and middle income countries.

"Countries are constantly defining ways to curb tobacco consumption. Tax and price policies are widely recognised as most effective for reducing demand for and consumption of tobacco products. These measures together with strong pictorial warnings have brought substantial health care gains," she said. However, illicit trade undermines tobacco control efforts and facilitates increased intake of tobacco by youth and adults from low income groups by making tobacco products more affordable and accessible. "Until products are not subject to legal restrictions and effective health regulations aimed at curbing tobacco use, such as pictorial warnings or banning sales to minors, this is fuelling the tobacco epidemic," Khetrapal added.

Pigeon with ‘Pakistani SC seeks Delhi govt's reply new delhi, May 29 (agen- Governor (LG) will have jurisdicmarkings’ sparks alert Cies): The Supreme Court on tion over matters connected with

Chandigarh, May 29 (The indian express): When it comes to the India-Pakistan border, even an avian is not above suspicion. Security agencies are in a flutter over a pigeon with “Pakistani markings” that was “caught” on the border in Pathankot district of Punjab on Wednesday. The “suspect”, now in police custody, was nabbed by villagers in the Bamial sector of Pathankot district, which is just a few kilometres away from the Pakistan border. The bird has “Shakargarh” and “Narowal” written on its body in English, along with some numbers and words in Urdu. Shakargarh tehsil is a sub-divison of Narowal district in Pakistan’s Punjab province close to the border. “We are investigating the matter and have alerted the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Border Security Force (BSF),” said SSP, Pathankot, R K Kaushal. The district police have left nothing to chance, even getting the bird scanned to check if there was something hidden inside it. “But we did not find anything in the scan,” said the SSP. He added that there was something written on the pigeon in Urdu and that efforts were being made to get that read. “It may be harmless but we cannot take any chances,” he added. This is not the first time that a pigeon has flown across the border and got caught. Five years back, in May 2010, another pigeon with Pakistani markings was “apprehended” near the border in Amritsar sector. It was then alleged that it was a “spy pigeon”. The bird was later handed over to wildlife authorities after being “cleared” in investigations.

Friday sought the Delhi government's response in three weeks on the Centre's plea seeking stay on the High Court judgement which termed as "suspect" the notification clipping powers of the Aam Aadmi Party dispensation. In its May 21 notification, the Centre had restrained the Delhi government's Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) from acting against its officers in criminal offences and holding that the Lieutenant Governor cannot act in his discretion. Clarifying that there is no stay on observations made by the Delhi High Court single judge in the May 25 judgement, a vacation bench comprising Justices AK Sikri and UU Lalit said, "We are not inclined to go into the issue of stay at this stage and after getting the reply, we will look into it." The bench also issued notice and sought response within six weeks from the Delhi government on the appeal filed by the Centre against the High Court's judgement. The bench also said the High Court would hear the fresh petition filed by the Delhi government challenging the May 21 notification of the Centre independently and without being influenced by the observations made by the single judge in his verdict. As per the notification, the Lieutenant

services, public order, police and land and he may consult with the Chief Minister whenever he thinks necessary on issues of services using his own discretion. At the outset, the bench said that it is up to the Delhi government to decide whether they want to pursue the matter in the Supreme Court or the High Court as the issues are related to Centre's notification. The bench also suggested that the matters from the High Court be transferred to the apex court. "Let it be decided for once and all by the final court," the bench said. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Friday said it will hear on August 5 a PIL challenging the Centre's notification. A bench of Justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva while listing the matter for August 5, said by then either the Supreme Court would decide it on the Centre's plea or the single judge would take a decision on the issue which has also been raised by the Delhi government. The turf war between Kejriwal and Jung over the control of key bureaucratic appointments was sparked by the appointment of IAS officer Shakuntala Gamlin as acting chief secretary of Delhi against the wishes of the AAP chief.

APSC took stubborn decision to stick with the same title. For a second time in September 2014, he sent a mail for the same reason, through the general counselling unit for students stating that the name is polarising the students. We clearly explained the motto of the study circle and relevance of Ambedkar and Periyar’s name,” said the statement.

Veterans ready for long fight over OROP new delhi, May 29 (ians): Miffed over their long-pending demand of onerank-one-pension (OROP) not being met, veterans from the armed forces say they are ready for a long fight with the government and will launch an agitation next month. On Thursday, two war veterans Wing Commander S.D. Karnik and Wing Commander Bhopadekar boycotted a function where they were to be felicitated by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. According to Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement chief Major General Satbir Singh (retd.) they have been trying to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a long time but have failed to get an appointment. The veteran said the government should implement OROP as it was an election promise. "Prime minister had promised that one-rank-one-pension will be given within 100 days of the government taking office; it's one year now. What happened to the promise," Singh asked while speaking to IANS. "We are prepared for a long haul; we will start agitation from mid-June, and we will go on the streets," he said. The Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement, which has around 30,000 active members, is attached to several other organisations. "It will be wrong to say that we will boycott all government functions. But if needed, to assert our views we will not participate in the Republic Day parade next year," Singh said. "We met the defence minister four times. All modalities have been worked out... Why is the government delaying it

now?" he questioned. He said that it was an election promise of the government made by Modi himself. "We have written four letters to the prime minister; we have been seeking appointment with him, he does not even want to speak with us," said Singh. "Modi promised three things, an exservicemen commission, war memorial at India Gate and one-rank one pension. Not even one has been implemented so far. Exservicemen are opinion makers in elections at several places; there are at least 150 constituencies where ex-servicemen dominate the voting pattern," he said. There are around 24 lakh retired servicemen in the country, and around 6.5 lakh widows of men from the armed forces. "When a soldier writes his life to the nation, it is the nation's responsibility to take care of him and his family. Those who have given their lives for the nation deserve their right," said Singh. Currently, the pension for retired personnel is based on the Pay Commission recommendations at the time when the personnel retired. This leads to a difference in pension for officers of the same rank who retire on different dates. With OROP, the retired personnel would draw the same pension as officers and soldiers of the same rank who are retiring now. They would also be entitled to a year's pension arrears at the new rate which would be a windfall for them. OROP will benefit 25 lakh ex-servicemen and is expected to cost the government around Rs.8,500 crore.

schools in Israel say SE Asia vows to rescue “boat people” Christian budget cuts hurt community BANGKOK, MAy 29 (ReuteRs): Southeast Asian nations agreed on Friday to intensify search and rescue efforts to help vulnerable “boat people” stranded in the region’s seas, as Myanmar said its navy had seized a vessel off its coast with more than 700 migrants aboard. More than 4,000 migrants have landed in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Bangladesh since Thailand launched a crackdown on peoplesmuggling gangs this month. Around 2,000 may still be adrift in boats on the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal, the United Nations said. Countries affected by the crisis agreed at the meeting in Bangkok to set up an anti-trafficking task force, and approved a wide-ranging list of recommendations to tackle the “root causes” of the crisis - although the plan was carefully worded to avoid upsetting Myanmar, which denies it is the source of the problem. “That the summit took place at all with this wide participation is itself a good result,” William Lacy Swing, director general of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), told Reuters. “It’s a very important first step. Having Myanmar there was key. I’m pretty optimistic. We’re pleased that they’ve retained an emphasis on intensifying search and rescue operations.” While some of the migrants are Bangladeshis escaping poverty at home, many are members of Myanmar’s 1.1 million Rohingya Muslim minority who live in apartheid-like conditions in the country’s Rakhine state. “You cannot single out my country,” Htein Lin, director general at Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and head of the country’s delegation, had said in his opening remarks. “In the influx of migration, Myanmar is not the

only country.” Myanmar does not consider the Rohingya citizens, rendering them effectively stateless, while denying it discriminates against them or that they are fleeing persecution. It does not call them Rohingya but refers to them as Bengalis, indicating they are from Bangladesh. Just as the meeting was wrapping up in Bangkok, Myanmar’s Ministry of Information announced its navy had intercepted a boat with 727 “Bengalis” aboard and was taking them to a base on an island off its southern coast to determine their identity. ROOT CAUSES The Bangkok gathering brought together 17 countries from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and elsewhere in Asia, along with the United States, Switzerland and international bodies such as the UNHCR, the UN’s refugee agency, and the IOM. One delegate said

Myanmar had pushed for other participants not to use the term “Rohingya” and that most were respecting Myanmar’s request. The final statement included a paragraph that called for addressing factors in the areas of origin of migrants, including “promoting full respect for human rights” as well as investing in economic development. It did not mention Myanmar by name. “Myanmar agreed to this paper,” Norachit Sinhaseni, permanent secretary of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters. Volker Turk, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the UNHCR, said earlier the deadly pattern of migration could only be ended if Myanmar addressed discrimination against its Rohingya minority. “This is a very good beginning,” Turk said after the meeting. “There is a strong paragraph on root causes in the agreement... There is a sense of opening from

Myanmar that I welcome. There was a discussion about Rakhine State.” There were also pledges of money to help deal with the crisis from the United States, Australia and Japan. PEOPLE SMUGGLING CAMPS Officially called the Special Meeting on Irregular Migration in the Indian Ocean, the gathering took place against the grim backdrop of Malaysia’s discovery of nearly 140 graves at 28 suspected people smuggling camps strung along its northern border. Thai authorities had found 36 bodies in abandoned camps on their side of the border at the start of this month, which led to the crackdown. When the Thai crackdown made it too risky for traffickers to land migrants, they abandoned thousands at sea, triggering the crisis. Regional governments have struggled to respond, although images of des-

perate people crammed aboard overloaded boats with little food or water prompted Indonesia and Malaysia to soften their initial reluctance to allow the migrants to come ashore. Malaysia, which says it has already taken 120,000 illegal immigrants from Myanmar, and Indonesia said last week they would give temporary shelter to those migrants already at sea, but that the international community must shoulder the burden of resettling them. Thailand has refused to allow the boats to land, saying it is already sheltering more than 100,000 migrants from Myanmar, but has deployed a naval task force to offer medical aid at sea. Thailand said on Friday it had given the United States permission to fly surveillance flights over Thai airspace to identify boats carrying migrants. “We have to save lives urgently,” US Assistant Secretary of State Anne Richard told reporters before the meeting.

t was an unlikely display of protesters: nuns cloaked in white, a black-clad priest clutching a golden scepter and dozens of Arab schoolchildren picketing outside the hulking headquarters of Israel’s Education Ministry. Their message, raised high on large banners: “Take your hands off our schools.” Private Christian schools are among Israel’s highest ranked educational institutions, established by churches in the Holy Land hundreds of years ago — long before Israel’s own creation. But school administrators are accusing Israel of slashing their funding as a pressure tactic to get them join the Israeli public school system — a move they say would interfere with the schools’ Christian values and high academic achievements. They are also complaining of discrimination, since as Israel moves to cut money to Christian schools it continues to fully fund large private school networks that cater to ultra-Orthodox Jews. “Even if we are a minority, we have an ancient message,” said Father Abdel Masih Fahim of the Franciscan Catholic order and principal of the Terra Santa School in the central town of Ramle. “We want to be treated equally, not only in education but also in every other aspect of life.” It is the latest sign of trouble for Christians in the Holy Land. In the birthplace of Christianity, Christians are a tiny minority, making up less than 2 percent of the population of Israel and the Palestinian territories. There are about 150,000 Christian citizens of Israel and about 50,000 Christians spread out in east Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Although they have not experienced the violent persecution that has decimated Christian communities elsewhere in the region, the population has gradually shrunk over the decades as Christians have fled conflict or sought better opportunities abroad. Pope Francis has raised the plight of Christians across the Middle East as a cause for concern. Under a longstanding arrangement, Christian schools and other private schools that manage their own affairs receive only partial government funding, with the remainder of their budgets covered by either donations or tuition. The government funds cover roughly threequarters of private schools’ standard costs, but it has been cutting back on other supplementary funding. The protesting Christian schools say this public funding has been systematically cut in recent years to their elementary schools. To compensate, schools raised

tuition fees — a burden for the Arab community whose average income is generally lower than the national average. But last year, the Education Ministry also placed limits on how much tuition the schools could collect from parents. Administrators say private funding from donors in the U.S. and Europe has dropped as they have directed their assistance to trouble spots elsewhere in the Middle East. The Christian schools say they held months of negotiations with the ministry to resolve the budget crisis, but ended the talks when Israel suggested the schools become public. In a statement, the schools said joining the public school system would mean “the end of the Christian, value-based educational enterprise and even a critical blow to the Christian minority in the Holy Land.” Kamal Atileh, a spokesman for the ministry, said it is trying to strengthen public education in Israel, but says it is up to the private schools to decide whether or not to become public. Israel would “maintain the uniqueness” of each private school if it joined the public school system, he said. The Christian schools’ fight reflects a wider battle being waged by other private schools — which have the status of being “recognized but unofficial.” According to the Education Ministry, there are a total of 277 elementary schools with this status. Christian administrators say their 47 church-run elementary schools are affected by the budget crisis. These schools are all facing the same budget cuts that the Christian private schools are, said Amnon De Hartog, a lawyer representing one of 23 private schools — mostly Jewish religious schools — that are petitioning Israel’s Supreme Court against the recent budget cuts. They say the cuts are unfair because Israel fully funds two large ultra-Orthodox Jewish private school networks — preferential treatment enshrined into law years ago thanks to the great influence of ultraOrthodox political parties. Advocates for the Arab community in Israel say the situation of church-run schools is different from other private schools. Some 30,000 Arab students — about half of them Muslim and half of them Christian — study in about 50 church-run schools in the country. Many of the schools have operated for centuries. “It’s a major part of the Arabic education system,” said Sawsan Zaher of Adalah, a legal center for Arab minority rights in Israel. “When you see they are not fully funded while religious ultra-Orthodox schools are fully funded, of course you have discrimination, even if you have the law that enables that.”

If you're trying to pick a winner in the Under-20 World Cup, you may not need to look much further than Latin America. Argentina has won it six times. Brazil has won five, the last in 2011. The two countries have also been runners-up four times. France won the most recent tournament in 2013, but only after beating Uruguay in a penalty shootout. Latin American teams overwhelmed the event at one stage, winning seven of the eight tournaments from 1993 to 2007. Spain, with future Barcelona star Xavi leading the way in 1999, was the only nonLatin American winner in that long stretch.

Argentina won its last title in 2007 with a team featuring current stars like Sergio Aguero of Manchester City and Angel Di Maria of Manchester United. But since that triumph, Argentina failed to qualify in 2009 and 2013, a relative slump by the country's standards. Most Argentine attention this time will focus on Angel Correa and Giovanni Simeone. Forward Correa signed last year with Atletico Madrid and already is being compared with Aguero or Carlos Tevez of Juventus. Simeone is a striker with Argentine club River Plate. He is the son of Diego Simeone, the Atletico Madrid coach and a former Argentine international. The younger Simeone was born in Spain but has chosen to

play internationally for Argentina. The Brazil squad features Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira, who was voted Manchester United's under-21 player of the year this season. Born in Belgium, he could play for either Brazil or Belgium but has said his "heart" is Brazilian. Eight of the 24 teams in the tournament are from the Americas, providing a wide showcase for up-andcoming stars. Colombian midfielder Andres Tello, playing on loan with Juventus, could be among those to leave a big impression. Another young player who has already broken through with a big club is Arsenal midfielder Gedion Zelalem, who plays for the United States. He was born in Germa-

At the start of the second game too, 2010 Asian Games champion Shixian continued her dominance and held a 6-3 lead before Saina equalised at 8-all. London Olympic bronze medallist Saina managed to hold a one point lead at 10-9 before Shixian was able to break away by taking five points on the trot. Shixian, bronze medallist in the 2010 World Championships, raced away to invincible 18-11 lead as the 25-year-old Chinese collected four consecutive points against Saina, who made a lot of judgement errors. After Saina bagged two straight points, a ruthless Shixian shut the door on Saina's title defence by killing off the game with three straight points to win the game 21-13.

ny to Ethiopian parents and has elected to play for the U.S. after gaining citizenship last year. He attended high school in the United States before going to Arsenal's youth academy in England. The other teams from the America's include Uruguay, Panama, Mexico and Honduras. Uruguay forward Rodrigo Amaral, who plays for Club Nacional de Futbol, is almost certain to be scouted by large European teams. The tournament kicks off Saturday with four matches. One features an all-Latin American showdown with Argentina against Panama in Group B at Wellington. Brazil opens against Nigeria on June 1 in a Group C match at New Plymouth.

Saina loses to Shixian in Australian Open quarters

SyDney, May 29 (ianS): India's campaign in the $750,000 Australian Open Superseries ended as World No.1 women's singles shuttler Saina Nehwal was outplayed 15-21, 13-21 by China's Shixian Wang in the quarter-finals here on Friday. Defending champion Saina failed to produce her best game at the Sydney Olympic Park and was outplayed in 42 minutes by former world No.1 Shixian, who also equalled her head-to-head record against the 25-year-old Hyderabadi at 6-all. The first game was a neck-to-neck affair till the five-point mark before Shixian started to show that she is the better shuttler on the day. Shixian's good show was matched by Saina up to some extent but the chinese was better on the attack and got ahead before the Indian got into groove and equalised at 14-14. But Shixian's flaw-

propos the enforcement drive against vehicles using black films on their windshields and windows and the enforcement to strictly monitor the use of helmets by two-wheel riders, the notification to the public through the local print media on the 20th and 21st of May is appreciated. People having tinted films on their windows and windshields will remove after reading the notification. Those that ignore the notification will be penalized and the black film removed by police as notified. Twowheel riders may also start wearing helmets if they posses one and do not

want to be penalized. Those that do not owe a helmet can purchase from one of the many shops where helmets are available. However, vehicles plying with outside registration cannot change their registration numbers in a day, week or even months for some cases. On enquiry after seeing your notification, it is learnt that vehicles permanently brought to another state should have their registration numbers changed within 12 months as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Seemingly, most of the public were not aware of it and many are still ignorant about the law, blaming the

police for levying a fine with the sole intent of filling its coffer. There are numerous vehicles in Dimapur with outside registration and it is learnt that Rs.500.00 is penalized per vehicle for not having the registration number changed. May I request, in the interest of the people owning outside registration vehicles, to give us some months before we are made to pay a fine on your considerate understanding as per your motto “Security, Service, Sacrifice” as most were not aware of the offence? ollywood actress Madhuri Dixit seems to have landed in a soup for endorsing Maggi with the Haridwar Food and Drug Administration today serving a notice to her on the claims made in the advertisement. The notice seeks a report from the actress within 15 days on claims made in the advertisement regarding the nutrition value of the ‘2-minute noodles’, an official of Haridwar Food and Drug Administration said. Maggi recently came under the scanner after samples collected by Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration were reported to be containing Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) and lead more than the permissible limits. Nestle India was asked to withdraw a batch of the popular snack from the market by the authorities in Uttar Pradesh recently. Dixit has been asked to explain how Maggi is good for health and the basis of making the claims. If the actress fails to respond to the notice within the stipulated time frame, a case could be registered against her, Food Security Officer Mahimanand Joshi said.

t’s not the first time that Sonam Kapoor has taken criticism with a pinch of salt. In the past, her knack of saying ‘you know what I mean’ inspired a spoof, which went viral. Even then, the actress sportingly shared it on her blog. Her latest ‘dramatic’ outfit at Cannes too inspired funny memes, with one even comparing the outfit to Anil Kapoor! However, without being offended, the fashionista shared that too on her social networking page, stating, “This is hilarious. I felt like a princess just so you know!” Way to go girl.

he remembers being bullied as a "brownie" in her teenage years in the US. But now Priyanka Chopra, who has landed a key role in American thriller show "Quantico", hopes her new endeavour helps her to break the "stereotype" that global pop culture has made out of Indians, and opens more doors for the country's actors to be taken seriously in the west. "The fact that 'Quantico' happened was a big win. I just hope it is successful because I really think that it would make a dent in Indian actors being taken seriously. I think," Priyanka said here. A teaser of "Quantico", which has been picked by ABC, gives ample footage

to Priyanka, who essays FBI Agent Alex Parrish. And she even speaks with an accent! Commenting on her debut in the US TV series, the 32-year-old said she agreed to work in the show only on a condition. "The fact that she is an Indian should have nothing to do with the story. 'I am an actor, so cast me as an actor' (was my point)... They indeed found me a part where I play a half-Indian, half-Caucasian FBI agent." "I play an American girl, I have an American accent, and it's nothing related to the stereotyped image of Indians. We are beyond the exorcism, spirituality and yoga... its there, which is great, but that's not it," said Priyanka, who also broke stereotype

when she ventured into the global music scene with her single "In my city". Some of her past memories of the US when she went to study there are sour. “I was bullied a lot when I was in a school in America. A lot of racism happened with me... which is why I came back. I was in high school, only 16 years old. I was called 'Brownie, go back on the boat you came from' and things like that." “So, when the opportunity of working in the West started coming in, starting with my music, I really wanted to try and bring relevance to Indian talent, because I was given the opportunity, ” added the multi-talented former Miss World. I take them with me to the shop sometimes, but they are too young to take on anything now. Till I’m there, and hopefully even after, I’ll make sure the salon is running successfully. Be it from his children, who are always in awe of their dad, or the elders in his family, Ramesh has always found encouragement. Sepp Blatter wins re-election as FIFA president

C M Y K

ZUriCH, May 29 (aP): Sepp Blatter was re-elected as FIFA president for a fifth term on Friday, chosen to lead world soccer despite separate U.S. and Swiss criminal investigations into corruption. The 209 FIFA member federations gave the 79-year-old Blatter another four-year term after Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan conceded defeat after losing 133-73 in the first round. Prince Ali's promise of a clean break from FIFA's tarnished recent history was rejected despite the worst scandal in the organization's 111-year history. The election went ahead Friday after U.S. and Swiss federal investigations struck at the heart of Blatter's "football family" this week. Two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected FIFA executive committee member were still in custody Friday as the votes were counted. Still, soccer leaders worldwide stayed loyal to their embattled president of 17 years, even though Prince Ali pushed the election to a second round by getting a surprising 73 votes. Before the second

round started, Prince Ali stood before the congress and conceded. Blatter has blamed others for bringing shame and humiliation on the sport. In a pre-election address to voters on Friday, Blatter said it was "impossible" for him and FIFA to "keep an eye" on everyone and be responsible for everything that happened in world soccer. Blatter won despite calls for his resignation from UEFA president Michel Platini and others. Platini said Thursday that UEFA could pull out of FIFA and withdraw from the World Cup if Blatter was re-elected. FIFA's big-mone y sponsors have also called for change within FIFA. Visa warned Thursday that it could pull out of its contract, which is worth at least $25 million a year through 2022. The defeated 39-yearold prince was a FIFA vice president for the past four years with a close-up view of Blatter's previous scandal-hit mandate. Blatter was re-elected unopposed in 2011 after promising to fight corruption and support key investigations of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bid-

Palestine drops planned FIFA vote to suspend Israel ZUriCH, May 29 (aP): The Palestinian and Israeli soccer federations took an uneasy path to reaching an accord at the FIFA Congress on Friday. The Palestinians withdrew its plans for vote on suspending Israeli from world soccer after weeks of talks involving FIFA and political leaders. "I am here to play football rather than play politics," Palestinian soccer leader Jibril Rajoub said from the stage. "I don't want to score goals, I want to end suffering." Rajoub eventually accepted his Israeli counterpart Ofer Eini's offer of a public handshake in the hall after an awkward stand-off lasting several minutes. "Football is a uniting element, not a dividing element," Eini said earlier through a translator. The handshake followed FIFA President Sepp Blatter steering away Rajoub's request for a separate vote registering protests against Israeli soccer. The Palestinians have argued that Israel restricts movement of its players in the West Bank and Gaza. Israel's soccer officials have cited security concerns at a government level which are out of their control.

Federer, Sharapova advance at French Open Klopp preparing for last

game in charge of Dortmund

BErLiN, May 29 (aP): While he'd love to sign off with a win, outgoing Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp doesn't want to be the hero in Saturday's German Cup final against Wolfsburg. "It's not my aim to be the hero tomorrow," Klopp said Friday ahead of his last game in charge. "I'm happy to leave that to the players." The 47-year-old coach is leaving Dortmund after seven memorable seasons, having restored the club's standing after its flirtation with bankruptcy in 2005 and brushes with relegation in subsequent years. Klopp took over in 2008 and led Dortmund to the Bundesliga title in 2011, its first league and cup double the following year — when Switzerland's Roger Federer returns the ball to Bosnia and Herzegovina's Damir Dzumhur Dortmund defeated Bayduring their third round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros ern Munich 5-2 in the cup

Paris, May 29 (aP): Stepping onto center court to take on 88th-ranked Damir Dzumhur, Roger Federer was on his guard. The 17-time Grand Slam champion had been caught cold at a previous French Open by a player ranked as low as the 23-year-old Bosnian, and he made sure that did not happen again. Federer advanced to the fourth round for the 11th straight year with a clinical 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win Friday. "I'd never played him before, he moves well, he's very quick. I didn't know him and I didn't know how he'd play on the key points," said Federer, who lost in the first round in Paris to the 88th-ranked Luis Horna 12 years ago. The 33-year-old Federer, who is seeded second at the tournament, won his only French Open title in 2009 when he completed his career Grand Slam. After winning his first two matches in straight sets, Federer put on another aggressive and solid display, winning 24 points at the net and saving four of the five break points he faced. The Swiss hit a superb forehand passing shot to earn a match point and

sealed it when Dzumhur sent a backhand into the net. Federer will next be up against either 13th-seeded Gael Monfils or No. 21 seed Pablo Cuevas. On a good day for the favorites, defending champion Maria Sharapova produced a convincing 6-3, 6-4 win over former finalist Samantha Stosur and Federer's Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka advanced in straight sets. After struggling in her first two matches at the French Open, Ana Ivanovic eased past Donna Vekic 6-0, 6-3 to book a spot in the second week. It was Sharapova's first serious test this year, and she passed it with ease, in a sharp contrast to her previous match with Stosur in Paris last year, when she trailed 6-3, 4-3 before turning it around. Up next for the secondseeded Sharapova is another tricky match against No. 13 seed Lucie Safarova. Sharapova has won four of their five matches, but their last three went to three sets. On a cold morning in the French capital, it took Ivanovic just 53 minutes to return to a fourth round at a major tournament for the first time in more than

final — and to the 2013 Champions League final, where Bayern exacted revenge through a late goal from Arjen Robben. Under Klopp, Dortmund was a persistent thorn in Bayern's side though the Bavarian powerhouse left Dortmund runner-up in the league in 2013 and 2014, while Bayern also won last year's German Cup final in extra time. Dortmund reached Saturday's final at Berlin's Olympiastadion by defeating Bayern on penalties in Munich, where the home side missed all of its spot kicks. This was the first season that Klopp had to face mild criticism, with some media commentators wondering if he had lost his touch. There were times it appeared he could do little to stem the tide. Dortmund lost stars

Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski to Bayern in successive seasons and struggled to replace them, while injuries to important players didn't help either. Klopp's side maintained its high-pressure intensive game but conceded on counterattacks and the players appeared to lack confidence both in defense and attack. It seemed Klopp had no Plan B. Dortmund slipped to bottom of the Bundesliga in February before the side eventually recovered to finish seventh and clinch a place in the Europa League. If Dortmund beats Wolfsburg on Saturday, Klopp would become the club's most successful coach with six trophies including the two German Supercup titles. Ottmar Hitzfeld has five.

Paes-Nestor, Sania-Hingis enter third round of French Open Paris, May 29 (PTi): It turned out to be a good day in office for the Indians at Roland Garros as both Leander Paes and Sania Mirza won their men's and women's doubles matches with respective partners to enter the third round of the French Open on Friday. Leander Paes and his Canadian partner Daniel Nestor breezed into the third round with a straight-set victory over the German-Austrian pair of Andre Begemann and Julian Knowle. The 10th seeded Indo-Canadian pair made short work of Begemann-Knowle winning in straight sets 7-6 (7-3) 6-2. Top seeds Sania and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis defeated local pair of Stepahnie Foretz and Amandine Hesse 6-3 6-4 in only 65 minutes. In the match featuring Paes, the first set saw both pairs trade a break each, it went to the tie-breaker where the fancied pair of Paes-Nestor brought on all their experience into play winning it at 3.

a year. Ivanovic, who won the French Open in 2008 after losing in the final a year before, wrapped up the first set in 23 minutes and finished with 19 winners. "After the first two matches, I really started to get a little bit of feeling and groove," said the Serb, who was pushed to deciders in the first and second rounds after twice losing the opening set. Since winning the title seven years ago, Ivanovic has never progressed past

The second set was a virtual cakewalk as the winners got a double break straightaway in the second and fourth games to lead 4-0 as the German-Austrian pair couldn't comeback despite winning a couple of service. The highlight of Paes-Nestor pair's performance was the successsful conversion of 82 percent of their first serve. They finally won the match on the eighth game to progress to the next round along with Bryan brothers. For Sania and Hingis, it wasn't a tough battle as they broke the French pair in the eighth game and followed it up by holding their serve to take the first set 6-3. The Indo-Swiss pair started the second set well as they took a 1-0 lead breaking the opposition serve. However Foretz-Hesse duo broke even to make it 3-3. But the decisive break happened in the ninth game which they won and served for the match without much difficulty.
