It was once considered one of the most radical student bodies in the South Asian region. The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) was once the apex body of the Naga people; one of the few organisations that not just worked towards the welfare of students, but also for the political and socio-economic rights and aspiration of the Nagas. However, in recent years, the Federation has taken a murky political turn. State politics have affected the NSF, weakening activism and promoting politicking. “The initial days were all about sacrifice. Past activism did not expect personal returns. Many leaders did not

have any ambition for fame or name, or utilise their positions for their needs. Now it’s a different story,” says a keen observer of activism among Nagas. This “different story,” views the observer, has come through the involvement of the State in student activism— a conscious effort programmed from the top. “Earlier, State machineries were very cautious of NSF activities. Now it’s the other way round. NSF has become an extension of the State. The student body now plays a very cautious role trying not to displease the State. Their activities are just about political correctness—a display for the sake of it,” further remarks the observer. This involvement is not confined to State politics; it extends to the Naga Political Groups (NPGs), exemplified in NSF elections as various groups lobby for their candidates. “For quite some time, politicians and UGs have played gimmicks,” says Vipopal Kintso, former NSF President, citing “lobbying and bribing” by some candidates who are “hell-bent” on winning. “The involvement of NPGs and politicians is an open secret. Politicians sponsor candidates from their tribe or region without considering the candidate’s credentials for reasons known to all. The NSF has become a platform for shaping a future career in politics,” says a Student Rights Activist from Chan-

del. He further asserts that factionalism, regionalism, tribalism confronting the present Naga society has had a direct impact on the Federation. Such involvement, “unseen” pressures and facts, has led to differences in opinions and issues, proving to be a setback for the student body. Around Rs. 20 Lakh (or more) is spent on campaigns, informs a former candidate. While campaigning in each unit, the candidate meets all stakeholders, tribal leaders etc. Although cash is

‘Govt trying its best to promote industry’ Morung Express News Dimapur | May 8

The Business Association of Nagas (BAN) held its 2nd general body meeting at Hotel Acacia on Friday with Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Industries & Commerce, MK Mero, as special guest and officials from State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) and State Department of Taxes as special invitees. The special guest in his address highlighted the activities of Industries & Commerce Department and also the various schemes and projects available for entrepreneurs. The Commissioner & Secretary admitted that due to the excess number of state government employees whose salary account for 65% of the state’s budget, the state has not been able to do much on infrastructure and development front. He however said the department is coordinating with nine Ministries in Delhi and trying to promote industrial and entrepreneurial activities in Nagaland and creating employment. Mero informed on the recent launching of food processing and apparel & garment manufacturing in the state. He said the state government was trying its best to promote textile industry, especially fashion designing, in the state. He further in-

formed that the Tuli paper mill is likely to be commissioned by November, 2016. Relationship manager (medium enterprise), SBI, TAP Paul, shared some business tips and said “when you earn, you should save and then go for further investment. Wise investment will take you far in the long run.” Paul said financial institutions can help businessmen and entrepreneurs in many ways and that SBI has different schemes to fit different types of business. Branch manager, BoM Dimapur, Tsewusto, said Nagas still do not have banking habits because of which many are unaware of the schemes and facilities provided by banks. He said the CD ratio in Nagaland is at 30. 16% is far below the national average of 76% and RBI’s mandatory 60%. One reason for this low CD ratio is because many Nagas fail to repay loans taken from banks as well as financial illiteracy of the general populace. Joint commissioner, Department of Taxes, Nagaland, Wochamo Odyuo, highlighted the salient features of newly introduced Goods & Service Tax (GST) in his power-point presentation. Earlier, chairperson BAN, Thungbemo Murry, delivered the welcome address and general secretary BAN, Dr. Khekugha Muru, presented the various activities of BAN in the last year.

LONDON, MAY 8 (THOMsON ReuTeRs FOuNDATION): If you’re a scientist and have just identified a dangerous new disease in Peru originating from pigs then please don’t call it paralytic Peruvian pig pox. Disease names like swine flu or Rift Valley fever risk stigmatizing communities and damaging economies, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Friday as it called for a rethink on naming new human diseases. “This may seem like a trivial issue to some, but disease names really do matter to the people who are directly affected,” said Keiji Fukuda, WHO’s assistant director-general for health security. “We’ve seen certain disease names provoke a backlash against members of particular religious or ethnic communities, create unjustified barriers to travel, commerce and trade, and trigger needless slaughtering of food animals. This

can have serious consequences for people’s lives and livelihoods.” The world health body issued guidelines for the naming of new human infectious diseases to minimize any negative impact. Terms to be avoided include geographic locations such as Middle East respiratory syndrome or Spanish flu, people’s names as in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Chagas disease, and animals such as bird flu or monkey pox. Cultural or occupational references are also a no-no, as are words that incite undue fear like “fatal” and “epidemic”. Diseases are often given common names, which quickly gain currency as they spread via the Internet and social media, WHO said. Once they are in use they are hard to change. “It is important that whoever first reports on a newly identified human disease uses an appropriate name that is scientifically sound and socially acceptable,”

WHO added. The guidelines say a name should consist of generic descriptive terms based on the relevant symptoms such as respiratory disease, neurologic syndrome or watery diarrhea. More specific descriptions like progressive, juvenile, severe or winter can be included when it becomes clear how the disease manifests, who it affects, its severity or seasonality. The pathogen that causes the disease should be part of the name if it is known, for example, coronavirus or salmonella. The guidelines, aimed at scientists, national authorities and the media, do not affect names that are already established. The final name of any new human disease is assigned by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), which is managed by WHO. Its new guidance is meant to cover the gap between identification and the assigning of the final name.

not given, a lot of money is spent on travelling and buying amenities for their vote bank, he points out. Expenditure depends on the generosity of the candidate. “In the last elections, some politicians were involved. The candidates spent over Rs. 10 Lakh. Of course it is spent on food, lodging and all luxuries for their vote bank. The expenditure increases when it comes to urban areas,” confirms another source. This trend, claims the source, started after the Rio Government emerged. When Rio came to power in 2003, he forged links with the civil society and most concerned groups in Naga society. The propaganda of establishing a ‘Peoples’ Government’ became an insidious element wherein most civil society groups were co-opted by the government. “Everybody became a part of the government. The rationality of civil society and activism was lost. It is the same case with the student body,” adds the source. On the other hand, some argue that ‘co-option’ began way back in 1997, with the ceasefire. “The NSCN-IM wanted all the civil society and NGOs under its control,” says a commentator. In the course of these events, the silence of the civil society entrenched manipulation and corruption in gov-

ernance. However, efforts to control unethical aspects of elections are in progress. In the past, NSF pioneered many organisations and took up issues ranging from political to socio-economic matters. NSF continues to be political in nature, asserts Kintso, further opining that the future of the younger generation needs a direction and NSF provides this. “Whatever wrong has been done, we are all trying to mitigate it,” asserts Student activist Lee Moyon, who views that the entire body has not changed and giving or receiving depends on the individual leading the organisation. Moyon believes that NSF still holds great importance for the Nagas because it involves all Nagas. “In this Federation, there is no boundary. Geographical names are what we give to communicate but in this arena, everyone comes as a Naga and not from a region or location,” says Lee. Perhaps the need of the hour, as Vipopal Kintso remarks, is leaders with ‘principles’. The NSF will hold its 26th General Conference from May 13 to 16 at Khonoma village, Kohima. The Conference will pave way for a new tenure with new leaders on May 15. Will the NSF indulge in more politicking or take up genuine activism with ‘principled’ leaders? Only May 15 will tell.

VDB Association rues loss of central funds

DimaPuR, may 8 (mExN): The Nagaland State VDB Association has taken serious note of the loss of developmental funds provided by the Government of India under various Centrally Sponsored schemes, due to retention and late releases of the funds by the State Government leading to subsequent loss and penalty deductions of further release by the Ministry of Rural Development, GoI. The Nagaland State VDB Association has appealed to the Chief Minister for timely and full release of funds as per stipulated in the guidelines. NSVDBA, President, Tohoshe Awomi in a press release stated that such delays ultimately prove to be highly counterproductive to the development of Nagaland and the rural areas in particular. Moreover, the perennial late or short state share releases towards flagship schemes like MGNREGA, IAY etc by the State Government has been attracting proportionate deductions by the Ministry of Rural Development, GoI that is highly avoidable and which causes huge loss of developmental funds to a resource strapped State like Nagaland. The Association stated that this matter has been highlighted to the department of RD on several occasions without much positive

response excepting a reply of a plea of State resource crunch being cited as the reason. “We, the VDB organization, as a mature and responsible organization, has accepted and appreciated the State financial problem till date but the previous year’s performance (2014-15) of the RD department while not casting any aspirations on non-performance, has been dismal, leading to the deprivation of benefits to the poor rural population of its livelihood,” it added. Taking all into considerations, the VDB Association of Nagaland has approached the Chief Minister for his intervention for timely release of central funds and also to provide the full state matching share. NSVDBA said it has approached the Ministry of Rural Development, GoI to intervene with the State Government on behalf of the VDBs of the State for timely release of its funds to the VDBs and without deductions. While appreciating the State Government in its endeavour to uplift the poor rural people of the State, the VDB Association stated that it will also be intervening in finding solutions for smooth releases of all the Centrally Sponsored Flagship programmes under other departments that are meant for the upliftment of the rural poor in the future for a prosperous Nagaland.

KSU president sent to 14-day judicial custody ShilloNg, MAy 8 (TNN): The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) president, Daniel Khyriem, was arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody on Thursday after he refused to accept the bailable warrant served on him by the special court constituted by the state government to try damage suits filed against leaders of various pro-inner line permit (ILP) groups. Khyriem was arrested in connection with a complaint lodged by the district administration against him for allegedly trying to prevent a voters' enrolment drive conducted in the office of the deputy commissioner recently. He was later produced in the chief judicial magistrate's court. Earlier, agitated over the arrest, KSU members blocked the police vehicle carrying Khyriem in front of the court even as they demanded his immediate release. In 2013, about 14 groups, backed by opposition political parties, had agitated for almost three months for implementing ILP in the pre-dominantly tribal state to check influx of 'outsiders' and illegal immigration. Three persons belonging to minority non-tribal communities were killed (two of them burnt alive) in violence related to the ILP movement in the state capital.

HPCD militants were planning to cross into Mizoram. The patrolling lasted all night when another report specified the HPCD militants were at Tiaulian village. The police team crossed the river to ascertain their presence. The HPCD militants fled and shot at the police as they ran, the statement said, adding Malsawmkima was killed in the exchange of fire. A Ruger .38 revolver was recovered from his body, it added. The police team gathered the body and brought it to Sakawrdai town in Mizoram’s Aizawl district. His relatives live in the town. An officer said the body arrived around 3.30 pm. Malsawmkima was a constable

A delegation from Bangladesh, in its February visit to India to discuss the progress of the ratification of the Land Boundary Agreement, discussed Chetia's case. Many on the Indian side read that as a sign of the two issues being connected. A top security source said linking the two issues might not have been Ban-

Mizoram Police had stepped up operations against the HPCD since the ambush. On April 16, a police team arrested the group’s “Army Chief” Lalropuia Famhoite and “Finance Secretary” Norbar Sanate and one alleged cadre near southern Assam’s Silchar town. The two high-ranking militant leaders have been slapped with at least ten different charges including extortion, criminal intimidation and maliciously using explosives and face up to a decade in jail if convicted.

gladesh's intention. "However, the developments in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha will definitely boost Indo-Bangla ties, which, in turn, would be a positive sign for the deportation of Chetia." Chetia, the founding general secretary of Ulfa and Paresh Baruah's cousin, has been in a Bangladeshi prison since 1997 after being arrested for illegal entry into the country and illegal possession of foreign currencies and a satellite phone. He completed his jail term on February 25, 2005, but went

into 'protective custody' of the Bangladesh government on court order after he petitioned for political asylum in Bangladesh or a third country (but not India) on the grounds of there being a threat to his life. The Bangladesh government is yet to take a decision on his petitions for political asylum, which he filed thrice in 2005, 2008 and 2011. Two years ago, he changed his mind and expressed a desire to return to Assam where he faces several cases of terrorism. The pro-talks faction of Ulfa, led by Arabinda Rajkhowa,

wants Chetia to join the peace process. The security source said, "Chetia is wanted in Assam. If he is deported, Assam Police will take him into custody and begin prosecution. If he joins the peace process, things will change for him in the sense that he might be allowed to be go free to help him participate in talks." Chetia's wife Monika Baruah and his daughters Jumon (22) and Bulbuli (17) arrived in Assam from Dhaka two years ago. Their arrival was facilitated by both India and Bangladesh.

3 Normalcy slowly returns at Manipur’s Pallel Saturday

Our Correspondent Imphal | May 8

After three days of unrest, normalcy is slowly returning at Pallel area in Manipur’s interior Thoubal district, but the indefinite curfew imposed by the authorities in the entire area from Pallel to Kakching Lamkhai continued on Friday. The last rites of M Gopal, who was killed in the shooting incident, were performed today. Tension prevailed in Pallel area after a gun man attacked a group of devotees, who were performing a ritual ceremony of Lai Haraoba festival, which left

one person dead and four others injured on May 5 at Laithok Ching, a hillock. Laithok Ching is located adjacent to Pallel and Aimol. Pallel is a Meitei village while Aimol is a Kuki village under Chandel district. The joint action committee (JAC) yesterday decided to cremate the body of M Gopal, 43, after an agreement was reached with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh in a meeting here. Payment of ex-gratia for the death of Gopal in the shooting incident was also discussed during the meeting. Home Minister Gaikhangam on the sidelines

of a function here informed media on Thursday the accused in the shooting incident had been nabbed by police and investigations were on. The accused is identified as Augustine Aimol, 21, resident of Aimol Satu village. Many social organizations including United Committee Manipur (UCM), All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Umang Lai Kanba Lup (UKAL), and Aimol Tribe Union Manipur have condemned the Laithok Ching shooting incident, saying such attacks were unacceptable to all communities.

The Unexpected Pleasure of Doing Things Alone People avoid going out by themselves because they think they'll appear antisocial, but it turns out they'll end up having a lot more fun than they expected.

happier going out and doing something." Some of Ratner and Hamilton’s experiments had subjects trying to imagine themselves in certain situations—running errands, watching movies at home, going out to dinner—alone or with others, and forecasting how much they’d enjoy doing them. But the experiment that is the most telling compared subjects’ predictions to how the experiences actually played out. The researchers stopped 86 passers-by in a college’s student union—some of them recruited while walking alone, others in a group—and asked them to stroll through a nearby art gallery, but only after they’d predicted how much they’d enjoy it. Comparing those results to surveys after the trip, the researchers found that the solo gallerygoers predicted lower levels of enjoyment, even though they ended up enjoying the experience about as much as those who went with company. The researchers determined that the main reason people didn’t think they’d enjoy

themselves is that they were afraid other people would think they didn’t have any friends. (That effect was only present for public activities—watching a movie on the couch wasn’t considered less appealing when done alone, but going to a theater was.) Another experiment revealed the irrationality at the core of this fear. The researchers found that individuals assume the judgments they receive for being alone are going to be much harsher than those they’d pass on others in the same situation. They thought they’d be seen as unusual, antisocial, and strange for going somewhere without friends, but said they wouldn't attach these labels as strongly to someone they witnessed, say, sitting alone at a movie theater. Ratner and Hamilton also ran some experiments to see how they might be able to nudge people to go out by themselves. They realized that there wasn’t the same mental block against going to the grocery store alone, and theorized that this was because

Using a Bad Filter You see all the negative details, blow them out of proportion, and don’t bother considering positive aspects of a situation. Example: Susan has been working hard at her exercise program for six months. She is losing some weight and her arms and legs look more toned than ever, but her midsection isn’t as slim as she’d like. Instead of acknowledging her progress, which would make her feel good and give her more energy), she focuses on the size of her waist, letting that “problem spot” be the filter for interpreting her success. What if Salman Khan had run the Secret and Violent History over a fellow Bollywood star? of Sixties underground radicals

Anahita Mukherji n a drunken night behind the wheel of a car, had Bollywood superstar Salman Khan mowed down a fellow Bollywood superstar, would there have been any debate on the quantum of punishment that the actor deserved? Or for that matter, would there have been any debate on whether he deserved to be punished at all? If the victim had been somebody other than a faceless, impoverished pavement dweller, would there have been a teeny weeny bit more sympathy for the family of the deceased and not merely the family of Salman Khan? Would the view that the judiciary had handed Salman Khan an exemplary sentence because of his celebrity status have been trotted out if he had killed another Bollywood star? I can’t quite think of a word that means the opposite of exemplary, but that’s just the sort of word I would use for Bollywood today. There are many things that I have grown to admire about Bollywood. I admire some of the excellent films that have been produced by the Hindi film industry. I admire Bollywood’s contribution to public relations — Hindi films are a hit in a diverse range of countries from Russia to Turkey. But on Wednesday morning, I cringed with disgust as I saw Bollywood come out in full strength to support Salman Khan. There was an outpouring of sadness over Khan’s conviction, with not a word of sympathy for the kith and kin of the man who died on the city’s pavements. It was almost as if Khan had been convicted for swatting a fly. Those who fit snugly into their Being Human T-shirts seemed to have forgotten that a man who’s dirt poor and sleeps on a pavement still qualifies as a human being. While many in Bollywood merely ignored the existence of the pavement dweller who was killed, the award for the most cringe worthy comment would have to go to playback singer Abhijeet, who had this to say on Twitter: “Kutta rd pe soyega kutte ki maut marega, roads garib ke baap ki nahi hai I ws homles an year nvr slept on rd.” Loosely translated, he feels that if a dog sleeps on the streets, he should die like a dog. He goes on to say that the roads aren’t a poor man’s father’s property, adding that, though he, too, was homeless for a year, he never slept on the streets. The tweet says much about the playback singer’s views on animals and people. While he has rather strong views on people sleeping on pavements, he seems to have no problem with people driving on them. “After watching Dabang, I actually thought the deceased man will be convicted for sleeping on the pavement instead,” she a twitter handle called @ammarawrites in a satirical swipe at Khan. Barring a few rare birds like Abhijeet, the deceased man was all but forgotten by the film industry. “@BeingSalmanKhan is a man who has always helped d underprivileged! A man who has done so much humanitarian work. Prayers for a fair judgement,” says Bipasha Basu. I can’t quite understand what “doing a lot for the underprivileged” has to do with being convicted for running over an underprivileged man. Are there so many underprivileged people in India that it doesn’t matter if you kill a few here and there? While many prefixed their sympathy with a line on how they respected the court’s verdict, some actors like Arjun Kapoor, didn’t deem fit to do so. “It doesn’t matter what anyone or any court says he doesn’t deserve this at any level…will stand by @ BeingSalmanKhan no matter what…” says Kapoor, clearly an expert in the law. “It hurts when your own are punished, even if they are in the wrong. We love you and are standing by you,” says actor Alia Bhatt. Of course, the pavement dweller and his family aren’t “her own.” Once again, I wonder how Bollywood would have reacted if Khan’s car lost control and rammed into a Bollywood star, sitting, standing, sleeping, singing, dancing or pirouetting on the pavement. What if he had killed “one of their own?”

ow you think about your ability to lose weight and keep weight off is critical to your success. Here, Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper reveals the outlooks that can make losing weight harder, plus important advice to change your thinking.

wo years ago, a Dutch creative agency opened a concept restaurant in Amsterdam that would be, in the words of its founder, “the perfect place to dine in pleasant solitude.” The restaurant is called Eenmaal—this name has been translated into English as “dinner for one”—and was launched in an attempt to start dissolving the stigma attached to going out alone. Apparently picking up on the same cultural drift, a new fast-casual restaurant in Washington, D.C., has tiered, bench-like seating with individual trays, an arrangement that caters to solo diners. As antisocial as those ideas may sound, it’s surprising that the world hasn’t seen more of them. Today, more than a quarter of American households are home to just one person—a figure that has tripled since 1970. Also, the median age at which Americans get married has recently reached a record high. Given these demographic shifts, one would think that by now, going out to the movies or to dinner alone wouldn’t be the radical acts they still are. A study in the Journal of Consumer Research gets at why most people are so reluctant to leave home and do fun things on their own. In a series of experiments, the University of Maryland’s Rebecca Ratner and Georgetown’s Rebecca Hamilton demonstrated that when it comes to going to the movies or to dinner, individuals consistently think they won’t enjoy themselves as much if they aren’t going with any of their friends. "People decide to not do things all the time just because they're alone," Ratner told The Washington Post. "But the thing is, they would probably be

The 6 mental attitudes that sabotage your weight loss

O

Mind Reading You think you can divine what people think about you. Example: Lindsey is shopping for a new outfit to inspire her to stay on track with her diet. She finds a pair of jeans she loves but can’t find her size. She asks a saleswoman if they have her size in the back, then sees the saleswoman talking in hushed tones to another; they are both glancing over at Lindsey. They are actually discussing whether they can give her the pair they know is on hold, but Lindsey assumes they are talking about her weight. She leaves the shop in shame before the saleswoman can return with the good news that they do have one pair left. Control Freaking You must be in control. If not, you become convinced you’re a victim, or think you’re responsible for everyone else’s feelings. Example: Ken is struggling to stick to his gym routine. On a Saturday morning he makes himself get into his workout gear and drive to the gym. On the way, his car breaks down. Convinced that it is “all my fault” because he “must have” been irresponsible in maintaining the car (even though he is) he exclaims, “Just my luck! Things never go my way!” He kicks the sidewalk, phones roadside assistance, and buys a donut from a nearby shop while he waits.

"T

he revolution ain't tomorrow. It's now. You dig?" As chronicled in journalist Bryan Burrough's revelatory new book, Days of Rage, that's what a hippie radical named Sam Melville told his girlfriend in the summer of 1969, shortly before stealing a bunch of dynamite and setting it off in banks, government buildings and corporate headquarters around Manhattan. It was among the first in a series of bombings carried out by homegrown wouldbe revolutionaries — in 1972 alone, there were more than 1,900 on U.S. soil (though the vast majority resulted in zero casualties). "When you look at the totality of the political actions," says Burrough, "the bombing, the mayhem, the assassinations, I don't know how you say that's not of political and historical significance." Days of Rage traces the colorful sagas of the Weather Underground, the Black Liberation Army, the Symbionese Liberation Army (of Patty Hearst fame) and the FALN, a violent Puerto Rico-independence move-

ment. Burrough based his 2004 book Public Enemies (a chronicle of Prohibition-era gangsters) largely on FBI files, and he initially assumed he could do the same this time. But that route proved useless, in some cases because, according to Burrough, the FBI had used illegal methods to pursue radicals and then purged its files. He ended up having to do an enormous amount of reporting, much of it awkward at best. "Think about the challenge in calling up people you don't know and asking them about buildings they bombed in 1971," says Burrough, who points out that some of the best journalism on the subject appeared in Rolling Stone. The book is filled with fresh information, but the Weathermen sections Brian Hiatt may get the most attention; Burrough suggests that one of its leaders, Bill Ayers (whose minor associations with Barack Obama have long obsessed the right), and other members have long coasted on inaccurate claims that they never intended to hurt anyone. Even an oft-romanticized figure like Black Panther George Jackson (subject of a laudatory Bob Dylan song) comes off as something close to a monster. Burrough reminds readers that Jackson killed a prison guard by tossing him from a balcony. Still, Burrough adds, "I don't endorse what they did. But judged on their own terms, what some of these people did was kind of remarkable."

The “Should” Illusion You have a secret list of many inflexible commandments about how you and others should act. Example: Dave was in a car accident 10 years ago that left him with chronic back pain. He also has high blood pressure and pushes himself too hard at work. Dave’s doctor recommends he take up yoga to help with his back issues and reduce stress. Instead of finding a gentle class, Dave takes power yoga because his internal “commandments” stipulate that he should always be able to take on the toughest of challenges. He forces himself into hard positions and hurts his back. He hobbles out of the studio feeling more stressed than when he went in, swearing yoga is not for him. How to Stop Distorted Thinking Step 1: Note the automatic thought you have immediately after the situation: “Great. Another example of my weakness.” Step 2: Pause and make a mental note of what emotions you feel. The simple act of observing your own thought pattern is sometimes enough to shift things right away. Step 3: Interject at least one fact that counters the distortion. For example: “I’ve put on two pounds before and I’ve lost it again pretty fast.” Or imagine what you’d say to a friend in the same situation. The game changer in this process is the rational and self-compassionate information you use as ammunition. Keep a list of these push backs on your computer in a note-taking app on your phone. Better yet, print them out and put them where you’ll see them when you need them—on your bathroom mirror, refrigerator door, workout clothes drawer, etc.

The Growing Generational Divide The Naga Blog is a forum on facebook where Nagas from Nagaland and around the world network, share ideas and discuss a wide range of topics from politics and philosophy to music and current events in Nagaland and beyond. The blog is not owned by any individual, nor is it affiliated to or associated with any political party or religion. The only movement it hopes to stir is the one raised by the voices of the Nagas every step of the way, amassing perhaps to mass consciousness one day. www.facebook.com/groups/thenagablog

was always with older folks when I was very young. They called me “Little Man” and told me I was “an old soul.” I worked in the garden with my grandparents, learned how to count money with Old Man Hoskins at the local store, and eavesdropped on the tales of my ancient neighbors. But it was the stories of my fierce aunt, Sis, that were my favorite. Unfortunately, it seems there are fewer opportunities for different generations to interact now. The 2010 United States census shows that Appalachia, where I live, has some of the lowest levels of age segregation in the nation. Yet even here I notice a shift away from the intergenerational activity I enjoyed as a child in the 1980s. What do we lose as we drift further away from our elders? I spent a great deal of my time with Aunt Sis, who seems to have always been old. She knew how to plant and how to build a fire. She had once been known as the wildest and most beautiful woman in Leslie County, Ky. She was blunt and hard to please. Sis loved to wear red dresses and red lipstick. Her coal-black hair was always styled, even after long hours in the yarn factory that left her hands bloody with thin cuts. I grew up right next door to her, and everyone said I was “her pick.” She didn’t bother to deny it. “Little Man is my baby,” she always said, even when I was into my 40s. Sis challenged my notions of what it meant to be elderly. Sis loved the most current music. She cussed. She took me to concerts and sneaked me into R-rated movies. Sometimes she and I danced in her living room to the latest Bob Seger record. “He’s my favorite!” she’d yell while she snapped her fingers, every part of her moving. “Turn it up, Little Man!” More than anything else, my aunt told me stories. She knew all the key elements of storytelling: love, mystery, trouble. In her tales there was comedy, tragedy, a man who got his comeuppance, a defiant woman who would not be

defeated, a community that ostracized the heroine. She recalled rationing and claimed to remember listening to F.D.R., my childhood hero, on the radio. She brought my long-lost greatgrandparents to life. This is the main thing we lose when we don’t talk to our elders: the histories. How many teenagers, for example, know the intimate details of the Kardashians’ lives but don’t know the love stories of their own parents? The joys and sorrows of the older generations serve as examples for us to learn from, to emulate or, perhaps even more useful, to avoid. As age segregation becomes more ingrained in our culture, what cycles will be repeated, what misconceptions will flourish? Sis was not without fault, of course. She could be racist and xenophobic in a casual way that many of her generation shared. I had learned that slurs like this were not appropriate, and taught her as much. Intergenerational education. Many of us move away from our hometowns and extended family. As I got older, I moved, too. We also take less part in the activities that once brought different generations together: things like church, community-focused entertainment and communal work. In my hometown, entire families used to attend an annual sorghum cook-off. We pulled foam off the bubbling syrup, sat around an outdoor fire and exchanged stories. First the teenagers stopped coming, then the middle-aged folks. For a while the older generation soldiered on, but that par-

ticular tradition stopped a few years ago now. The generational divide is nothing new, of course, and it may only continue to grow. According to the most recent census, the elderly population will more than double between now and 2050. Before then we’ll have to decide if it’s better to ignore a huge chunk of our population, or if we will embrace everything we can give to one another. Members of the older generation can help; they are certainly not innocent in this. They, too, congregate with those their own age. My generation should be bridging the gap between the young and the elderly. My daughters, both teenagers, spent a lot of time with Sis in her very old age. She may have been on oxygen and in a wheelchair, but the stories she shared taught them how to be as strong, defiant and determined as she had always been. Sis taught them that people of all ages have value, and revealed to them that multigenerational mixing can lead to true laughter, knowledge and mutual respect. Sis’s favorite singer, Bob Seger, turned 70 this week and recently released another album. Shortly before her death in February, I played a few of his new songs for Sis. She managed to swing her foot along to the beat. Struggling for breath, she smiled at the music and our joint memories. Now she is gone, and a universe of stories has gone with her. Fortunately, I had been taught to listen, to be present, and so those stories go on in me and in my daughters, handed down from one generation to another.

HANGE STARTS FROM OUR OWN KITCHEN, OUR OWN COMMUNITY, VILLAGE, TOWNS, DISTRICT, STATE then we can start thinking about changing the world. Like our favourite TNB quotation : Small Minds talk about people, Average Minds talk about Events and Great Minds talk about IDEAS. So, as much as possible, when am with my friends I try to get them to share their stories and experiences so that these can be turned into best practices, or converted into ideas to inspire others. This time, I had the chance to catch up with one of my good friend, we call him The Naga Hulk Hukupa Ciekhan Thulu-o. We all know him as the body builder who represented India at Mr. International held in Jakarta, Indonesia. What you would not know about him is that he hails from a humble background where both his parents are cultivators in Phek district but his passion and zeal to follow his passion has taken him from a small town in Pfütsero to Indonesia to win him the Mr. International Viewers Choice Award in Jarkata, Indonesia. He is currently setting up a new gym in Kohima to continue his passion for body building and fitness but he continues to work and uplift the village where he hails from, that is where his heart lies. Our humble giant hails from a village called Phüsachodü in Phek district where the Government School was not performing as good as other schools with less than 50% passing percentage in previous years. In 2013, he was the President of Phüsachodü Students Union PYS and he knew something wasn't right and the truth needed to be spoken about irregularity of teachers in the school. The Art subjects teacher in the particular school never bothered to visit the school and made special appearances only ONCE OR TWICE IN A YEAR!!!! And the sad thing about most places in Nagaland is that THE ELDERLY ARE ALWAYS RIGHT!!! Nobody dared to raise their voices against them because if the young people speak up, your voices are shut and repressed! You dare not speak and irk the old methods and go against the POWER of those who are playing with the lives of our younger generation! Until, our gentle giant stepped in during a parents meeting and raised this issue of their infamous teacher. He took out the question paper which the teacher set for CLASS 9 students which even had questions like 'What is your name?' (Imagine, a CLASS 9, test question paper!) This great teacher would be chilling out in Kohima without even teaching a single chapter and other staff would struggle to teach those chapters to his students.. Hukupa strongly objected against this corrupt practice and charged the elders and even told the Village Development Board(VDB) to stop his salary until he shows up in the school regularly for a month! So the teacher and his bunch of alcoholic elders started hunting for Hukupa and created a lot of commotion where the old system almost had our Hulk cornered with threats, mockery and challenges. But Hukupa did not budge but stood his ground until the teacher finally decided to leave the school and go back to where he came from Adios!!! THIS YEAR, Govt.High School, Phüsachodü, Phek SECURED 100% PASS PERCENTAGE!!!!!!! One of the only 5 Government schools in the entire State to achieve this feat!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE WHO HAIL FROM THIS EXEMPLARY VILLAGE!!! Currently there is only one Maths teacher who hails from South India in the school but a person working as LDA is also volunteering to teach other subjects. I say, that guy is a HERO!! The carpenter steps in to teach Tenyidie subjects sometimes and that is how they are managing! THESE ARE THE REAL HEROES WHOSE STORIES ARE UNHEARD AND UNSPOKEN.! Our older generation have had their time and they have only managed to turn our society into the mess that it is today. This is not just a story about HUKUPA, but about all the other student and community leaders, that IF YOU HAVE THE WILL TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM, YOU CAN!!!!! IT TAKES ONE LEADER TO TRANSFORM OUR SYSTEM!!!! I encourage other bloggers to be story tellers and share such stories from your own community, friends, village etc to inspire one another because in order to CHANGE OUR SYSTEM, IT NOW DEPENDS ON OUR GENERATION!!

nergy-neutral, glow-in-thedark trees planted on pavements to replace street lights. Water pipes that monitor their own leaks. Bionic arms powered by the mind. A mouth-guard that detects concussions. Self-driving cars. These are the kind of technologies of which we'll see more in the next 10 years. And, no doubt, the pace of innovation will accelerate at a dizzying speed as the world's best creative minds try to sate the demands of our insatiable appetite for progress and an insta-lifestyle that's faster, cheaper, easier and better -- whatever 'better' might mean. But as we consider what the next 10 years will bring, let's ask ourselves this: What good are these technologies if they cannot be shared and enjoyed by all -- especially the people or nations who need them most? Or if a lack of security and stability prevent people from accessing them? In other words, what good is technological progress without moral progress? Answer: It's nothing more than the illusion of progress. Right now in my region, the Middle East, men are beheaded for sorcery while children are forced to watch. Women are enslaved and abused for belonging to 'another' religion. Around five million children are out of school -- missing out on the a,b,c's and the 1,2,3's of their future and the future of our region. Elsewhere, the ugly scenes in Ferguson and Baltimore remind

us that below the surface and, too often, above it, injustice and prejudice simmer across the US. We've seen religious intolerance manifest itself in terrifying massacres in Kenya. And already this year, around 1,500 refugees, in search of a better life, have drowned, in part, because of the global community's indifference to their plight. As long as progress is exclusive and not inclusive, shared by some and not all, the more we'll see incidents like these. And the more we'll see lone wolf terrorists and groups, such as ISIS, Al Shabaab and Boko Haram feed off people's sense of injustice and seek perverted fulfillment. To go forward, to write a narrative of real and lasting progress, we must go back. Back to basics. We must return to the roots of our common humanity and to the universal values that connect us to each other. And we must be as hungry and restless for them as we would be if

they were the next smart phone or Fitbit or video game. Imagine the power behind the simple act of getting to know others different from ourselves -- of reaching out to someone from a religion or culture different to our own. What waves of understanding and compassion would follow if we stood in one another's shoes. I'm an Arab and a Muslim and a mom of four but I empathized -- and applauded -- the actions of African American mom, Toya Graham, when she hauled her son out of the riots in Baltimore and ordered him home to keep him safe. And I know I wasn't alone. A mother's love is the same in any culture, religion or language. Is Toya any different to 40-year-old Ghada -- a Syrian mother of five girls and two boys? Her husband killed by a sniper; her in-laws' home looted and burned; threats of rape and

murder against her daughters; and with the security services after them, Ghada took her children and escaped. In the dead of night, terrified that the moonlight would reveal them, they walked the hilly, rocky ground, carrying the youngest children and what possessions they could, until they reached the safety of the Jordanian border. A mother's love is the same in any culture, religion or language. It's in that moment when we think, "that could be my child," that we start to identify with each other and relate to each other's hopes and fears. It's the impulse that makes us take responsibility for each other's well-being. It's the essence of global citizenry and what living in an interdependent world means: being able to depend on each other. And, yet, somewhere in our fast-paced world, crammed full of the latest gadgets, the alleged hallmarks of 'progress', too many people have forgotten the values on which our global family is built. So, how do we remedy this? With an app called "Moralify' on which we click daily to remind us to be honest, kind and generous? Or a 'Valuebit' we wear on our wrists to count integrity, love and forgiveness points? How about we pause, put down our devices, look up and listen to our hearts and our consciences? Not so much 'connectivity' as just connecting with each other. And if that moral progress could keep pace with technological progress then that would be, well, real progress.

once sat in a seminar where the motivational speaker kept saying: "Accept yourself as you are." Fine with me, but the colleagues at my side all had serial killer personalities. I tried to warn the speaker but she didn't pick up my discreet pointing and head-shaking gestures. People in certain professions, such as journalism, law, and stockbroking can be "rough diamonds" - minus the diamond part. One reporter colleague made so many enemies that he ended up renaming half the contacts in his phone's electronic address book "Do Not Answer". Be warned. Touchy-feely spiritual types are storming the world of work, creating absurdity. Example: In front of me is a Financial Times report which says British accountants are now calculating the cash value of the workings of nature: "The National Audit Office estimated the value of bees' service to the British economy at £200 million." Of course, everyone's thrilled that bees' hard work has finally been recognized, but what would bugs do with paypackets? (I suggest the money be diverted to other low level, insect-like toilers, such as me.) The new corporate buzz-phrase is "non-tangible costs". A prominent Indian think-tank said that a single hamburger "with non-tangible costs" would be $200. I think everyone was supposed to be amazed by this, but it just reminded me of the cost of meat at my overpriced local supermarket, which I shall call ParknRob. Then the US Center for Investigative Reporting said that if you included all the associated costs of getting gasoline to your car, gas should cost $15 a gallon. But I'm sure they failed to include US wars, in which case the true cost should be $15 billion a gallon. Which reminds me of the cost of cartons of milk or juice at ParknRob. Then Britain's Department for Transport produced a financial chart which included "the real value of time". If time has a cash value, I wouldn't mind buying a few extra centuries (with my bee money), as I've always fancied being an immortal! Enough! What humanity needs to do is to remember the 1963 line from sociologist William Bruce Cameron: "Not everything that counts can be counted." Now before you correct me, I know full well that the Internet attributes this quote to Einstein. But you should never believe anything on the Internet, unless you are reading this on the internet, in which case, this sentence is the sole exception. The seminar ended with the motivational speaker telling us that the most important thing in life was to "be yourself". My serial killer colleagues smiled and nodded. Perhaps I shouldn't complain. Public speaking is a difficult, scary thing to do. Someone once advised me that if I felt nervous on stage I should imagine the audience naked, but I tried it and it totally didn't help. Still, business types should listen to creative individuals. Case in point: comedian Stephen Wright asked: "If all the nations in the world are in debt, where did all the money go?" I have no idea, but the total world debt is currently $233 trillion. That's quite a lot of money. That reminds me: my weekly ParknRob bill is due.

Modi's China trip: Focus on ending non-tariff barriers

New Delhi, May 8 (ReuteRs): India will seek abolition of non-tariff barriers during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China next week, officials said, as part of efforts to reduce a widening trade deficit and boost local industry. New Delhi wants greater market access in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, IT services and farm products including bovine meat, Trade Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday. India buys more than 60 percent of its bulk drugs from China mainly to produce generic drugs, but Beijing has not taken enough steps to ease rules to allow access to Indian generics - exported to more than 150 countries. "India has also sought simplification and greater transparency in China's procedures relating to ... imports," the minister said in a written statement to the Lower House of parliament, ahead of Modi’s three-nation visit to China, Mongolia and South Korea from May 14-19. Modi will meet Chinese leaders to advance bilateral trade and

Modi's visit provides great opportunity to cement ties: China BeiJiNG, May 8 (Pti): Welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's positive remarks on the Sino-India ties, China today said his visit here next week will provide a "great opportunity" to cement bilateral relationship and take it to a new high. "We have taken note of the report. We appreciate Prime Minister Modi's remarks on China India relations which also show the wide consensus on bilateral relations reached by leaders of the two countries," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing here. She was responding to a question seeking China's reaction to Modi's interview to the Time magazine ahead of his visit in which he had said that India and China have "learnt from history" in dealing with their border dispute and that bilateral ties have reached a stage where they can cooperate at a global level while competing in commerce and trade. Hua said as Modi is about to visit China, the two countries have a "great opportunity" at hand attract Chinese companies to set up plants in India. India’s exports to China, its biggest trading partner, fell onefifth to $12 billion in the 2014/15 fiscal year ending in March, while imports grew to $60.4 billion,

to boost ties. "We would like to take this visit to cement the already existing momentum and take the relations to a new high," Hua said. "As we can see the two sides have maintained positive momentum in the boundary negotiations. Disputes have been managed and peace and tranquillity has been maintained at the border," she said. Hua said recent years have witnessed frequent high-level interactions between China and India and increased political mutual trust. Modi will embark on a three-day visit to China on May 14. He will be hosted by Chinese President Xi at the ancient Chinese city of Xian, the capital of the Chinese leader's home province. The two leaders will have an informal dialogue on a host of issues before settling for formal talks on May 15 in Beijing. Besides Xi, Modi will hold talks with Premier Li Keqiang and Chairman of the China's legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC).

widening the trade deficit to over $48 billion, near one-third of the total trade shortfall. Worried over a widening trade deficit with China, the government has imposed quality standards on nearly 100 items,

mainly electronic and IT products, but industry experts said it would not have much impact on imports. The Confederation of Indian Industry has asked the government to take up market access

with China to promote exports of drugs, IT and auto components. Modi is likely to push for greater services trade when he meets Chinese President Xi Jinping, said an industry official. "India has the potential to generate more than $10 billion through export of these products to China in next 4-5 years," said a CII report submitted to the government. India expects an easing of Chinese rules for market access during Modi’s visit as it would benefit the world’s second-largest economy when it is facing its worst slowdown in decades. Officials said both countries could also agree for more cooperation in railways and in resolving a decades-old border dispute. "India could offer a train track to China to run a bullet train besides easy terms to set up industrial parks," said a senior government official, with direct knowledge of the matter. He said there has not been much progress on the development of two industrial parks that China had announced earlier.

Ishrat Jahan encounter case: Only jailed accused DSP Amin also gets bail ahMeDaBaD, May 8 (Pti): DSP NK Amin, the only accused left in jail in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, was today granted bail by a special CBI court on grounds of worsening health and parity with co-accused. "The bail plea is allowed on personal and surety bonds of Rs two lakh each," special CBI court judge KR Upadhyay said while granting relief to Amin, who is suffering from prostrate cancer. The CBI court allowed his bail application on medical grounds as he is suffering from prostate cancer and also on parity with co-accused, IPS officers DG Vanzara and PP Pandey, who were granted bail in the case in February. The court has also accepted the defence argument that it may take a long time for commencement of trial in the case. The special CBI court has also ordered Amin to submit his passport and not leave India without prior permission. The court also imposed a condition that Amin will not make any attempt which can hamper the investigation and will also not try to influence any witness associated with the case. Amin has to appear before the CBI court on every Thursday and he has to remain present during the trial, the court order said. Amin was the Deputy Superintendent of Police in special branch when the encounter took place on June 15, 2004 in the city outskirts. Mumbra-based 19-year-old college girl Ishrat Jahan, her friend Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Sheikh along with two suspected Pakistani persons Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were gunned down by the city crime branch officials. The crime branch had then claimed that the four were Lashkar-E Taiyaba (LeT) operatives and had landed in Gujarat to kill then Chief Minister Narendra Modi. According to CBI chargesheet in 2012, it was a fake encounter orchestrated jointly by Gujarat Police and Intelligence Bureau. As many as seven Gujarat police personnel were named in the CBI charge sheet - GL Singhal, PP Pandey, DG Vanzara, NK Amin, Tarun Barot, Anaju Chaudhari and JG Parmar - for murder, criminal conspiracy and confinement of the four persons. Singhal, Barot, Chaudhari and Parmar secured default bail in the case as the probe agency could not file charge sheet in the stipulated time period of 90 days after their arrest. Pandey and Vanzara were given regular bail in February. During the arguments, CBI had opposed the bail plea and said that he had played an active role in the fake encounter than Pandey and Vanzara. Amin had on February 16 moved his bail plea on the grounds of parity with other accused and also cited his deteriorating health condition. Advocate Dinesh Tiwari for Amin has submitted before the CBI court that co-accused Vanzara had conspired the killings, seeking bail on the ground of parity with him. Amin is suffering from cancer and he should be released to take proper treatment, Tiwari said. As per the charge sheet, Amin had fired five bullets at Ishrat and three others. On this, Tiwari said the FSL report had contradicted the probe agency's claim. Amin, who is also an accused in 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, was granted bail by Special Mumbai court in the case in March 2013.

New Delhi, May 8 (Pti): Slamming the government for its crackdown on nearly 9,000 NGOs, civil society groups today asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to end "coercive actions" immediately and amend "opaque" rules and regulations regarding foreign funding to ensure transparency. In an open letter to Modi, they demanded urgent revocation of punitive actions against the NGOs saying grounds of such measures were "vougue, subjective or flimsy" and sought dialogue between the NGO sector and government to address the issues. The letter has been signed by over 170 organisations from across the country. The civil society groups asked Modi to amend rules and regulations

under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and removal of provisions that are amenable to "subjective interpretations" besides seeking a mechanisms for grivance redressal. "Put an end to coercive actions against NGOs and donors, without reasonable cause or due process, or seek to cripple the ability of these organisations to carry on their legitimate and sanctioned work," they said in the letter which was released at a press briefing. In a crackdown on NGOs allegedly receiving illegal foreign funds, the government last month had cancelled licences of nearly 9,000 such entities for violation of FCRA. The US-based Ford Foundation has also been put on the 'watch list' by the Home Ministry, which directed

that funds coming from the international donor should not be released by any bank to any Indian NGO without mandatory permission from it. The government had also barred Greenpeace India from receiving foreign funds with immediate effect. Accusing the government of adopting "double-standards" in acting against the NGOs, the civil society groups particularly questioned regulatory measures against INSAF, Peoples Watch, Sabrang Trust, Greenpeace India, Ford Foundation among others. In the letter, the groups demanded complete clarity and transparency on various provisions and processes ensure uniform application of laws to all NGOs, trusts, foundations, and societies.

Cameron’s Conservatives win big in surprise UK election LONDON, MAY 8 (AP): The Conservative Party swept to power Friday in Britain’s parliamentary elections, winning an unexpected majority that returns Prime Minister David Cameron to 10 Downing Street in a stronger position than before. Cameron went to Buckingham Palace, where he was expected to tell Queen Elizabeth II that he has enough support to form a government. That brings the election to a much-quickerthan-expected conclusion. Polls ahead of Election Day had shown Conservatives locked in a tight race with the opposition Labour Party, raising the possibility of days or weeks of negotiations to form a government. Labour took a beating, mostly from energized Scottish nationalists who pulled off a landslide in Scotland. Ed Miliband announced Friday that he will step down as party leader. “I’m truly sorry I did not succeed,” Miliband said. “We’ve come back before and this party will come back again.” With the Conservatives winning an outright majority in the 650-seat House of Commons, the election result looked to be far better for him than even his own party had foreseen. With 643 constituencies counted, the Conservatives had 326 seats to Labour’s 230. The prime minister beamed early Friday as he was announced the winner of his Witney constituency in southern England. “This is clearly a very strong night for the Conser-

vative Party,” he said. Cameron, who would be the first Conservative prime minister to win a second term since Margaret Thatcher, vowed to counter the rise of Scottish nationalism with more powers for Scotland and Wales. “I want my party, and I hope a government that I would like to lead, to reclaim a mantle that we should never have lost — the mantle of one nation, one United Kingdom,” he said. Labour was routed in Scotland by the Scottish National Party, which took almost all of the 59 seats. SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon told the BBC that the vote represented “a clear voice for an end to austerity, better public services and more progressive poli-

tics at Westminster.” “The Scottish lion has roared this morning across the country,” said former SNP leader Alex Salmond, who was elected in the seat of Gordon. Cameron’s coalition partner, the Liberal Democrat party, faced electoral disaster, losing most of its seats as punishment for supporting a Conservative-led agenda since 2010. Leader Nick Clegg held onto his seat but resigned as party leader Friday. Almost 50 million people were registered to vote in Thursday’s election. Votes in each constituency were counted by hand and the results followed a familiar ritual. Candidates, each wearing a bright rosette in the color of their party, line

up onstage like boxers as a returning officer reads out the results. But if the form was familiar, the results were often shocking. Among the early Scottish National Party winners was 20-year-old student Mhairi Black, who defeated Douglas Alexander, Labour’s 47-year-old foreign policy spokesman and one of its most senior figures. Black is the youngest U.K. lawmaker since 13-yearold Christopher Monck entered Parliament in 1667. One of the big losers of the day was U.K. Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, who resigned after losing his race. His party ran third in opinion polls, but by early Friday had won only one seat because its support is spread out geographically.

Britain’s economy — recovering after years of turmoil that followed the 2008 financial crisis — was at the core of many voters’ concerns. The results suggest that many heeded Cameron’s entreaties to back the Conservatives as the party of financial stability. Public questions at television debates made plain that many voters distrusted politicians’ promises to safeguard the economy, protect the National Health Service from severe cutbacks and control the number of immigrants from eastern Europe. British voters reacted with surprise as they awoke to the news. Polls had shown a virtual dead heat in the race, and many expected weeks of wrangling over who would be in power. “I thought it would be closer,” said account manager Nicky Kelly-Lord, 38. But some, like project manager Jonathan Heeley, 42, thought it inevitable that a country struggling to rebuild in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis would be anxious to keep the economic recovery going. “The country’s rebuilding itself and people want to stay with that,” he said. The pound surged as much as 2 percent after exit poll results were released, as investors took that as reassurance that the country will not see days or weeks of uncertainty over the formation of a new government. The currency held onto most of those gains on Friday, trading at $1.5440. Stocks also surged, with the main FTSE 100 up 1.6 percent.

Japanese hotel offers ‘crying rooms’ Norway, Philippines envoys among LONDON, MAY 8 (PTI): In a bizarre offer, a hotel in seven dead in Pak chopper crash Tokyo has launched special “crying rooms” for women that are equipped with a selection of tear-jerking movies, eye masks and luxury tissues to allow female guests to cry heartily. The Mitsui Garden Yotsuya hotel said it is providing the rooms to help women de-stress and overcome emotional problems, and that it hopes the rooms would allow women to cry ‘heartily’ and in private. At $83 a night, the rooms are equipped with a selection of tear-jerking aides, ‘metro.co.uk’ reported. These include movies such as ‘Forest Gump’, the South Korean film ‘A Moment to Remember’, where a young couple faces the debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s and ‘A Tale Of Mari And Three Puppies’ (a Japanese film about the true story of a dog and her puppies who survived the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake). The rooms also have sad manga comics for those who would prefer to read and shed tears. The rooms also contain tissues which are described as ‘soft as cashmere’, eye masks and makeup remover to help female guests cry in comfort.

ISLAMABAD, MAY 8 (IANS): The ambassadors of the Philippines and Norway were among seven people killed on Friday in a chopper crash in Pakistan’s Naltar valley near Gilgit. Even as the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed the crash was caused by an attack it carried out, the army said the chopper “developed technical fault” while landing, media reports said. In an update on Twitter, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asim Bajwa said the dead included four foreigners -- Ambassadors Domingo D. Lucinerio Jr. of the Philippines and Leif Larsen of Norway and the wives of the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors -- and three Pakistanis -- two pilots and one crew member.

He said that according to initial information, two helicopters belonging to the Pakistan Army landed safely “while the third developed technical fault while landing”, which caused the accident. He ruled out the possibility of any terrorist or subversive activity, according to Dawn online. The Pakistan Army helicopter crashlanded on a school, the report said, adding that Dutch Ambassador Marcel de Vink and Polish Ambassador Andrzej Ananicz were injured in the incident. Earlier, in a series of tweets, Bajwa said that six Pakistanis and 11 foreigners were on board the MI-17 helicopter. Three helicopters were carrying a delegation of foreign diplomats and their wives and aides to Gilgit-Baltistan, where they were scheduled to meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Scottish nationalists crush opponents Sets stage for new independence bid

GLASGOW/ABERDEEN, MAY 8 (REuTERS): Scottish nationalists rampaged to victory north of the border in Britain’s national election, obliterating their opponents and setting the stage for a new battle over independence. In an epic performance, the Scottish National Party (SNP) ousted the leader of the Labour party in Scotland, defeated a senior Labour figure in Paisley, and took former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s onetime stronghold in Kirkcaldy. “The Scottish lion has roared this morning across the coun-

try,” former SNP leader Alex Salmond said after triumphing in the Gordon constituency in Aberdeenshire. “Scotland has asked to speak with a united voice, that voice will be made clearly for Scotland in the next Westminster parliament,” said Salmond, whose campaign to lead Scotland to independence was defeated last September. But the SNP could still be shut out of any role in the British government, a scenario likely to bring a new confrontation over Scottish aspirations for independence.

Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservatives were on course to win the most seats in parliament with 316, just shy of an outright majority, with Ed Miliband’s Labour Party trailing on 239, an exit poll showed. Scotland accounts for 59 seats. If confirmed, such an outcome would deny the SNP the kingmaker role it had sought in the House of Commons and kill off the prospect of a leftist alliance with Labour to force Cameron out of office. But it would dramatically highlight the political divide between England and Scotland. “This is history written as we watch and speak,” said Murray Stewart Leith, senior lecturer in politics at the University of West Scotland. “It has serious implications for the United Kingdom as a political union. Whatever government is formed after this election will need to seriously consider its constitutional structure.” In a stunning victory for the SNP, Labour’s Douglas Alexander -- the shadow foreign secretary and campaign chief -- lost to a 20-year-old politics student, Mhairi Black by nearly 6,000 votes. Black becomes the youngest British member of parliament since the 17th Century. The leader of the Labour Party in Scotland, Jim Murphy, also lost his seat to the SNP. Results so far from Scotland gave victory to the SNP in 50 seats, compared to just 6 seats in 2010. That included a clean sweep in

Glasgow, whose large workingclass had been solidly Labour for decades. Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael held on to the Orkney and Shetland seat for the Liberal Democrats, while Labour kept Edinburgh South. The left-of-centre SNP had offered during the campaign to work with Labour in order to shut out the Conservatives and reverse austerity policies. Labour leader Miliband had ruled out a coalition, insisting he could win an outright majority. ‘Disunited kingdom’? SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said in Glasgow the results showed a historic shift in opinion in Scotland. “We said during the campaign that the SNP MPs would be elected to make Scotland’s voice heard, and that’s exactly what we intend to do,” she said. The results could bolster Scots to push for a new referendum on independence after separatists lost one last September. Commentator Magnus Linklater said: “You are going to get a bunch of SNP MPs going down to Westminster for whom independence is the ultimate goal, and pressure will build up.” Since the referendum, many Scots have become disillusioned with Labour, traditionally strong in Scotland, seeing it as having moved too far away from the left and closer to Conservative thinking. Some in Scotland deride Labour as “Red Tories”.

Kangana Ranaut: going to make sure men, women are paid equally in Bollywood

N

ational Award winning actress Kangana Ranaut said she will “make sure” someday the divide between men and women in Bollywood in terms of paychecks is bridged. (Also read - Kangana Ranaut: The Vamp Has Become Bollywood’s Heroine) “Few people are trying, like me. It is still a very, very male-dominated industry and yes hopefully, at some point, it will be equal and I am going to make sure that happens,” she told the media here in response to a poser on her stance on the issue. The actress was in Kolkata to promote Tanu Weds Manu Returns, which releases on May 22. The film is the sequel to 2011 romantic comedy Tanu Weds Manu. “This is a love story on contemporary marriage. I don’t think such stories are made. The humour in the movie is subtle and relatable,” she said. Kangana made her Bollywood debut with the 2006 hit Gangster and since then, she has carved a special place by delivering exceptional performances in films like Fashion and Queen. In Tanu Weds Manu Returns, she will be seen in a double role of Tanu and Kusum. Kusum is a tomboy of sorts and for the character, the actress had to go rustic and speak Haryanvi. Kangana said shooting for the sequel was “stressful” due to the challenge of the double role. Directed by Aanand L Rai, the film also stars R Madhavan, Deepak Dobriyal, Jimmy Sheirgill, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Dhanush.

Justin Bieber texting Selena Gomez that she’s beautiful

A

fter Justin said Selena looked “gorgeous” at the Met Gala, he’s echoed his remarks by telling Selena herself. “Selena‘s been getting texts from Justin since they spoke at the Met Ball,” a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “He texted her that night, saying how beautiful she looked. Since then, they have texted a few times. He wrote that he wants to see her when she gets back to LA.” While one would think it’d be impossible to resist the charm of the Biebs, Selena has found an incredible amount of willpower within herself. “Selena has kept her replies simple and sweet. She’s not getting her hopes up. She’s trying not to read too much into it,” the source explains. “By now, she knows firsthand that with Justin, actions speak louder than words.” Preach, girl! “Selena’s letting Justin do the work and will be the one in the end who decides if they actually will meet up in person. It’s just awkward and nerve wracking for her. She kind of knows deep down inside that avoiding him is most likely the best choice,” our insider says.

Court suspends Salman Khan’s sentence MuMBAI, MAY 8 (AP): A court on Friday granted bail to one of India’s biggest movie stars until it hears his appeal challenging his conviction in a drunk-driving hit-and-run case more than a decade ago. Salman Khan was sentenced to five years in prison on Wednesday on charges of driving over five men sleeping on the sidewalk and killing one of them in Mumbai in 2002. Justice Abhay Thipsay said the Mumbai High Court would start hearing Khan’s appeal in July, according to prosecutor Abha Singh. He asked Khan to pay a bail bond of 30,000 rupees ($500). Khan, 49, is one of Bollywood’s most popular stars, appearing in more than 90 Hindi-language films in his 27-year career. A large crowd of Khan’s supporters danced with joy outside his house in Mumbai, India’s financial and entertainment capital. However, one of his fans tried to commit suicide by consuming poison just before the start of the court proceeding on Friday, the Press Trust of India news agency said. Police rushed him to a hospital in an unconscious state. The fan, an aspiring script writer named Gourango Kundu, said in a pamphlet that he was hoping Khan would give him a break in Bollywood movies. If the ac-

tor was sent to the prison, he would not be able to help him, the pamphlet read. In convicting Khan on Wednesday, the trial court accepted the prosecution’s plea that Khan was drunk when he rammed his SUV into a group of homeless people and found him guilty of culpable homicide. The trial had dragged for more than 12 years. Khan began his career in 1988, playing a romantic action hero with many of his movies becoming box office hits. In recent years he turned to philanthropy, establishing a charitable trust called “Being Human” which works in education and health care for the poor. Bollywood filmmakers were worried about the court case because Khan has several films in the pipeline. Film industry analysts said Khan had projects worth 2.5 billion rupees ($40 million) depending on him. It could take years more for Khan’s case to wind its way through India’s overburdened legal system. The system is plagued by a shortfall of judges, corruption, police delays and excruciating layers of paperwork. Even if the Mumbai High Court upholds his conviction, the actor could go to India’s top court, the Supreme Court, seeking reversal of his sentence.

Thankful Alonso to treatmedical staff to dinner Jerome Pugmire AP Sports Writer

Back at the track where he was concussed in the preseason, Fernando Alonso has promised to thank the medical personnel who treated him by taking them out to dinner after the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. The 33-year-old Spaniard crashed at the Circuit de Catalunya in February during a second test session. The McLaren driver missed the third and final test session and the season-opening race in Australia the following month as his recovery took longer than anticipated. "The impact was a little bit unlucky and it put me out of the car one month," Alonso said on Thursday at a news conference. "The week that I was in the hospital I had one of the best staff I could imagine. They were so kind to me, and I

plan to have dinner with them. Sunday night, after all the stress and the race." The two-time Formula One champion has not had much to celebrate, otherwise, considering he has not won a race since winning here two years ago. Since that victory — his 32nd— he has gone 37 races without a win. Last year was particularly difficult as Ferrari was hit by internal feuds and

changes of management, leading to Alonso's departure to McLaren, and Sebastian Vettel quitting Red Bull to replace him. The move has gone far better for Vettel, who has one race win and three podiums and sits third in the standings. Alonso's highest finish so far was 11th at the Bahrain GP three weeks ago, and his last podium was a third-place finish at

the Hungarian GP in July. The barren run looks set to continue as McLaren continues to struggle with its Honda engines since switching from Mercedes engines in the offseason. "It's a little bit disappointing to be outside of Q1 (top 10 in qualifying). Expectations are always high with a McLaren-Honda partnership," Alonso said. "People are expecting better than what we are doing now. I'm enjoying the challenge a lot, climbing the mountain." Although it may be some time before Alonso gets back into the spotlight, he was wearing sunglasses during the news conference. "I have a stye, a little inflammation of my eye," Alonso said. "They recommend not to be too much (in) the artificial light. I am trying to protect the eye a little bit today and tomorrow to be ready for Saturday and Sunday."

Van Gaal: united signed Depay from under noses of psG

MANCHESTER, MAy 8 (AP): Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was forced to personally intervene to clinch the signing of Memphis Depay ahead of schedule to prevent the Netherlands winger from joining Paris Saint-Germain. Van Gaal said Friday he didn't want to sign Depay until the end of the season, fearing it would disturb his players' focus for their remaining Premier League games as United looks to secure a Champions League qualification spot. However, the deal was pushed through sooner

than planned to ward off competition for the player from PSG, the big-spending French champions. "Because of the market, I have to handle — I must handle — (the transfer) because otherwise he had signed for Paris Saint-Germain," Van Gaal said. United announced on Thursday that the club has reached a deal to sign Depay from PSV Eindhoven, with the move set to go through once the transfer window opens in June. Van Gaal knows Depay well from his time as Netherlands coach and suggested the player's motivation for

moving to United was their relationship. Asked why Depay would have wanted to join PSG ahead of United, Van Gaal said: "At that time, he wasn't reached by me." "I don't want to speak to players before the season has ended (but) because of the close relationship I have with the management of PSV, I could handle (the deal)," Van Gaal said. Depay is this season's top scorer in the Dutch league with 21 goals. United is fourth in the Premier League and occupying the final Champions League berth, four points clear of Liverpool with

three matches left. United will be without one of its most important players for the run-in after holding midfielder Michael Carrick was ruled out of the rest of the season because of a calf injury. The England international was injured in the 4-2 win over Manchester City on April 12 — and United has lost its three games since, without scoring a goal. Van Gaal said "a virus in our dressing room" is disrupting preparations for Saturday's match at Crystal Palace. "I have a little bit of pain in the throat," Van Gaal said. "A lot of players are suffering (from it)."

With longtime powers sidelined, NbA playoffs have fresh look Paul Newberry AP Sports Writer

Spurs and Celtics? Already eliminated. Lakers and Heat? Didn't even make the playoffs. There's a new look to this NBA postseason, which will crown a champion that hasn't won the title in at least 17 years — or, quite possibly, a franchise that has never been on top. "There is not just one dominant team," Washington's Bradley Beal said on Thursday. "You're not going to see the same teams." Indeed, of the eight conference semifinalists, the most recent to win a championship are the Chicago Bulls, who claimed the last of six Michael Jordan-era titles in 1998. The Houston Rockets are the only other multiple champion still playing, winning consecutive titles in 1994-95. There are two franchises that won their only championships so long ago, well, one had a different nickname (the Washington Wizards were the Bullets when they took the 1978 title), and another was in a different city (the 1958 St. Louis Hawks, who moved to Atlanta a decade later). The Golden State Warriors are 40 years removed from their lone championship season, but at least they've got a banner. The Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Memphis Grizzlies

have never won a title. "I don't think there's any question that fresh faces and new teams invigorate the sport," Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said. "It adds new flavors for the fans to sample. And they like it. The game has never really been more popular on a global standpoint than it is right now." While the NBA was the first major North American league to put in a salary cap, it's had the most exclusive group of champions. Over the last 16 years, just three teams — the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, and Miami Heat — have hogged a total of 13 titles. Going back even farther to the launch of the modern NBA in 1950, two teams — the Boston Celtics, with 17 banners, and the Lakers, who have a total of 15 including their time in Minneapolis — account for nearly half the championships. That's why this season really stands out for the NBA. "Whoever wins is going to be a brand new face," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "That's exciting for those of us who are still playing." Some possible reasons for this changing of the playoff guard: TEAM BALL San Antonio proved last year that a team doesn't need a megastar to win the title, and plenty of teams are trying to follow the

Spurs model. Most notable is Atlanta, where the roster was expertly assembled by former Spurs executive Danny Ferry and the coach is Mike Budenholzer, a longtime assistant under San Antonio's Gregg Popovich. The Hawks went 60-22 and claimed a top seed in the East for the first time since 1994 with an absurdly balanced lineup; the five starters averaged 12 to 17 points a game. Ball movement is now the order of the day, the isolation play largely viewed as a forgettable relic. With everyone sharing in this fastpaced style, it's no longer necessary to have one of the five best players in the game to be a title contender. "A team like us, that doesn't have what you would call a superstar, can be a really good team," Hawks guard Jeff Teague said. TOUGHER CAP While the NBA first instituted a salary cap in the 1980s, it was long nothing more than an annoyance for the power franchises, which were still able to go after pretty much anyone they wanted. The lockout of 2011 changed that. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, there are shorter contracts and tougher financial penalties for teams that spend too much. While it's still too early to know exactly how much this CBA will affect the

competitive balance, the league touts the measures as a means to getting more teams in the mix (and making the owners a lot more profitable). With franchises now selling for astronomical amounts, the players will push back on these measures the next chance they get. No matter what, it should have a long-term impact on the way rosters are built and maintained. WHERE'S LEBRON It still helps to have the best player in the world. And there's no one better than LeBron James. After heading to South Beach to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in 2010, James led Miami to four straight NBA Finals and two championships. When James returned to Cleveland this season, the balance of power shifted northward. The Heat missed the playoffs, while the Cavaliers finished second in the East behind Atlanta. Even with the King in the mix for another title, there will surely be a different look to the celebration. "That's what the NBA really wants," Atlanta's Kyle Korver said. "They want everyone to feel that if you manage your team well, put a good team together, coach them well, and play hard, it doesn't matter if you're a big market or a small market. You're going to have a chance."

Sturridge was reish Football League (LFP) announced on Friday that it was taking legal action against the Spanish Footballers' Association in the wake of the players' decision to call a strike from May 16. The strike, which coincides with the one called by the Spanish Football Federation from the same date, is related to their dissatisfaction with a recent decree passed by the Spanish government to permit collective sale of television rights, reports Xinhua. Luis Rubiales, the president of the players' association, assured that the union was in favour of collective television rights but that they wanted a fairer split in the way the money was divided between La Liga and second division football clubs. He said the union was also worried by the disappearance of the minimum wage of footballers and by a clause which apparently gives the LFP arbitrary disciplinary rights. The strike could spell chaos for Spanish football with two games left to be

Cup final. All captains of Spain's top clubs have lent their support to Rubiales saying they are open to negotiations. However, for the moment the LFP does not appear to be interested in negotiations as it issued a communique insisting the "objectives" of the strike were "illegal." "They are asking the modification of a part of the law and those modifications cannot be the objective of a strike in the private sector, as the law makes clear," said the communique, which states the players are "clearly breaking," the collective agreement between LFP and the footballers' association. "If the strike is declared illegal then we will proceed to seek damages and the clubs will be able to apply the disciplinary measures they find convenient," LFP said. "The damages are terrible and important, people have shown how worried they are, even from as far away as China, about the consequences for our sponsors," Javier Tebas, LFP president, said.

suffered a devastating blow as it emerged that he could be out of action until October. The Liverpool striker had surgery on his left hip on Tuesday in New York but the severity of the problem means the 25-year-old will not be able to resume full training for four months, reports dailymail. co.uk. This latest prognosis is a huge setback for Sturridge and his club manager Brendan Rodgers, piling pressure on Liverpool to sign a topclass striker this summer. Sturridge’s recovery will rule him out of the big kick-off on August 8 and four games for England. It is possible he will not play in the Premier League until the beginning of October. The surgery, which was performed by Dr Bryan T. Kelly, has been deemed a complete success by Liver-

ing so many issues with a thigh muscle. Having been beaten to the signing of 25 million pounds Memphis Depay by Manchester United, Liverpool will have to redouble their efforts to bring in a striker to provide the firepower they have lacked this season. Liverpool have a move lined up for Burnley’s Danny Ings and promising Belgium international Divock Origi will move to the club this summer after completing a year on loan at Lille. But managers Rodgers will need to recruit a high-class, experienced forward as well. It has been a year to forget for Sturridge. When the campaign ends, he will have missed 41 of Liverpool’s 58 games and only started seven matches because of a recurring thigh problem before the

signed to miss England’s summer internationals against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia but there is now no chance of him playing in the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino (September 5) and Switzerland (September 8). Liverpool will not rush Sturridge back so there must also be doubt over his availability for England’s games against Estonia (October 9) and Lithuania (October 12). If Liverpool finish in the top four this season, he would also miss the Champions League play-offs at the start of next season. The former Chelsea forward uploaded a video to his official Instagram account of him doing some light work on an exercise bike just two days after his operation as he set out on the long road to recovery.

pep Guardiola, too clever for his own good? John Leicester

AP Sports Columnist

There is such a thing as being too clever for your own good. Pep Guardiola is undoubtedly smart, but his reluctance to water down his tactical thinking is one reason why his Bayern Munich team won't win the Champions League this year. That and because he looks out of his depth at the pinnacle in Europe without the unstoppable, matchwinning force that is Lionel Messi. Bayern playing three-on-three for 15 opening minutes against Barcelona's attacking trio of Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez in the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday night was the football equivalent of climbing into a lion's cage to impress your friends. Either you emerge with a story for the ages — "Did I tell you about the time when ...?" — or you lose limbs. Bayern lost a leg. Even for a renowned motivator like Guardiola and with the home advantage of their Allianz Arena, it is hard to think of convincing arguments the Bayern coach can use to hoodwink his players into thinking that their 3-0 loss at the Camp Nou can be remedied in the second leg in Munich next Tuesday. Football neutrals should send Guardiola a "thank you" note for an opening spell so breathtakingly risky that it was tempting to wake up the kids: "Don't worry about being tired for school, you must see this." No other contemporary manager would have dared go toeto-toe with a trio that by the end of the night had inflated its combined total of goals this season to

an otherworldly 111. The audacity was intoxicating, oxygen after so many matches of rote football from coaches lacking Guardiola's imagination. The boxing equivalent would have been if Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao had gone at each other hammer and tongs in their so-called Fight of the Century that wasn't, instead of going through the motions for obscene paychecks. There was method in Guardiola's madness. By skimping with three at the back, piling bodies into the midfield and pushing players higher up the pitch, he wanted to out-Barcelona Barcelona, deprive

Messi and Co. of the ball that he, when he was Barcelona's trophywinning coach from 2008-2012, drilled them to always hold onto or quickly get back. "Monopolize the ball and make them run" was Guardiola's succinct summary of his antiBarcelona plan. "But we were not dominant enough." Pragmatism can go a long way in football. The career of Jose Mourinho, the antithesis of Guardiola's idealism, demonstrates that. Winning the Champions League with two different teams — Porto and Inter Milan — is an achievement Guardiola is no clos-

er to matching. His Champions League titles in 2009 and 2011 both came with Barcelona, with Messi. Unlike Guardiola, Mourinho doesn't think "parking the bus," defense in numbers, winning ugly when needed, are dirty words. One would never expect, or even want, such calculating realism from a football romantic like Guardiola. But his switch after 15 frantic minutes to a more orthodox four-man defense tacitly acknowledged the folly of allowing Messi, Neymar and Suarez so much room. That no one at Bayern made Guardiola see that before kickoff begs the question of whether he has too much power

and not enough critical advice. Had Bayern started that way, putting out fewer fires and playing with more composure than panic, it perhaps could have made better use of the opening spell. Guardiola could point out that Barcelona's goals came at the end of the match, in the 77th, 80th, and 94th minutes, not at the beginning, and that the match would have been radically altered if Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski had not scuffed wide an early chance. Guardiola could also convincingly argue that Messi decided this match, not tactics. His second goal, bamboozling Jerome Boateng with a left-right swerve that comically floored the Bayern defender, and chipping over the world's best goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, will be seared on the minds of Ballon d'Or voters. They'll have little choice but to award Messi his fifth player of the year trophy unless current holder Cristiano Ronaldo does even better to get Real Madrid past Juventus in the other semifinal return leg next Wednesday. Still, despite those mitigating circumstances, the verdict has to be that the 2013 Champions League winners have gone backward in Europe since Guardiola took charge from Jupp Heynckes. Last season, it was eventual champion Real Madrid that chewed chunks out of Guardiola's reputation with a 5-0 aggregate victory in the semifinals. Now Messi is begging the question: Can Guardiola only win in Europe when the Argentine genius is playing for him, not against him? If he can't find an answer to that next week, then perhaps Guardiola isn't as smart as he thinks.

fter several months tussle amongst the NPF Party, Noke group offered reconciliation and even to withdraw the case from Election Commission. Everybody is in peaceful mood over the development. But according to newspaper, discrimination is being made in induction of new Legislators into the Cabinet. It is a matter of arrogance because it is an outright rejection of the offer of Noke group. I am saying what is right and what is wrong before God only. If generosity is shown, it is a sign of large heartedness and magnanimity which will be rewarding. Rev. L. Suohie Mhasi

Dear Readers ...

T

he other day, I went to this Office and from the gatekeeper to the peon kept asking me “Chai Paani”. Because of “Chai paani” they rued my work cannot be done. I know Kohima is facing water scarcity but with the coming of the torrential rains I thought things were better. Since I did not have any ready prepared Chai or a bottle of water with me , I gave them twenty rupees but they say ”Chai Paani” comes in hundreds and thousands...OMIGOSH!!! This must be because of the extortion that undergrounds take from businessmen to shopkeepers that prices of tea has gone up but affecting offices the most. I felt bad but you see because of this “Chai Paani” my file has been lying on the Dealing Assistant’s table for months. Day in and day out I went to that empty chair and table, sometimes the blessed Dealing Assistant is having tea somewhere, sometimes because of this “Chai Paani” I am invisible. Feeling bad for my poor file I would just dust it off, thinking maybe because of the dust it’s so unattractive. You can’t soil the Office peoples hand with that dust, Right? The other day a spider poke its head out from the file and I shoo shooed it far away. I tell you if not for being an outsider I would have followed that spider to the very end of the room, trample it with my shoe and see to it that no other family or relatives of that spider come near my Blessed Dealing Assistant’s table. Whose coming is like waiting for angels to come down from heaven!! (Sigh). So back to that, “Chai Paani”, I finally decided enough is enough, I will not let my brethren suffer more, I am a good Christian. The next day taking some disposal cups, a flask with the best tea I could brew (By the Way I buy it cheap, maybe these people don’t know where to buy them), a box of mineral water I went to the office. As soon as I reach, I distributed the Chai and the Paani. Praying as I did so for the Blessed Dealing Assistant to be there. I walk towards the table and he was there! Aah! I smiled, poured out my tea like offering incense to this great man, than I placed it before him. I put the water bottle at the left side where there were less files. I stood there for about two minutes. Silence, no one seems to know what I was doing. Then they told me to go. So my dear readers if anyone of you have files that needs to move remember a cup of chai and a bottle of paani is necessary. By the way after months my file has move to the next table. Williams, Sharapova both lose in Madrid Open semifinals

MAdRid, MAy 8 (AP): Serena Williams was beaten in the Madrid Open semifinals, a short time after Maria Sharapova also lost.Petra Kvitova defeated the top-ranked Williams 6-2, 6-3 Friday, while Svetlana Kuznetsova ousted Sharapova 6-2, 6-4. The victory was Kvitova's first against Williams, a 19-time Grand Slam champion. "I'm just exhausted today," said Williams, who had her serve broken six times. "But it's really good preparation for Roland Garros." Earlier, Kuznetsova beat Sharapova for the first time in seven years, breaking her opponent's serve three times and saving the one break point she faced. "I'm just happy to be in the

final," said Kuznetsova, who had never before even reached the semifinals at the Madrid tournament. Sharapova, who could have returned to No. 2 in the rankings with a victory, said she wasn't able to take advantage of Kuznetsova's second serves like she had done previously. "Today she had much more pop on her ball than I did, while I felt my shots were a bit too flat," Sharapova said. "I also think the court and the bounce, with the altitude here, meant her spin was getting really high." Kuznetsova, who will be playing in her first final in nine months, is 1-3 against Kvitova but beat the Czech on clay last year at the French Open in their last meeting.

Arsenal manager Wenger not to sell forward Walcott

C M Y K

L O N d O N, M Ay 8 (iANS): English football club Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists he will not consider selling forward Theo Walcott until January, even if he cannot agree a new contract this summer. The England international is entering the final year of his contract, and Wenger says talks over an extension have started, reports dailymail.co.uk. It has been mooted that the Gunners will look to sell Walcott this summer to avoid losing him for nothing in 2016. Walcott can begin negotiating with overseas clubs about a potential move from January. And Wenger insists only then will Arsenal look to sell Walcott. "I want him to stay, when you go into negotiations with a player it is with a desire for him to stay. He looks keen to do it and I am keen to do it, so let’s see what comes out," Wenger said on Thursday. "The focus is on what you do in case of failure. We are always in the mode where we want to be successful. In case of failure, we’ll see but in case of failure -- that will only be in December."

Mayweather makes U-turn, says no to Pacquiao re-match Says Manny Pacquiao is a 'sore loser' and 'coward' LOS ANGELES, MAy 8 (REutERS): Two days after saying he would be open to a re-match with Manny Pacquiao, unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather Jr. reversed course on Thursday while describing the Filipino as "a sore loser". In an interview with Showtime to be broadcast on Saturday, Mayweather expressed his disgust that Pacquiao had blamed an injured right shoulder for his defeat by the American in the so-called "Fight of the Century" in Las Vegas. Pacquiao, the former eight-division world champion, lost a unanimous decision to Mayweather on Saturday in the richest prize fight ever before undergoing successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder four days later. "I'm not going to buy into the bull--... and I don't want the public to buy into the bull----," Mayweather said in a sampling of quotes released by Showtime on Thursday.

BARCELONA, MAy 8 (REutERS): Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton set the pace in Spanish Grand Prix practice on Friday while Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg fell foul of the stewards with his first reprimand of the season. While Rosberg set the fastest lap of the day in the morning session, with a lap of one minute 26.828 seconds, Hamilton was comfortably quicker in the afternoon sunshine at the Circuit de Catalunya. The Briton's time of 1:26.852 compared to Rosberg's 1:27.616, although the German had gearchange problems, as the sport fired up for its first European weekend of the season. Rosberg was summoned to the stewards, including former world champion Alan Jones, after first practice for a pitlane infringement. Force India's Mexican Sergio Perez was then fined 1,000 euros ($1,123.80) for speeding in the pit lane during the second practice. Hamilton, last year's winner in Spain, has won three of four races this season and started all on pole. He leads Rosberg by 27 points. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was third and second fastest in the sessions, but still some way off the Mercedes pace, with team mate Kimi Raikkonen fourth in both.

Toro Rosso's rookie pairing of Carlos Sainz, making his home debut, and Max Verstappen were in the top 10 in both sessions but Red Bull had a difficult day. Australian Daniel Ricciardo was sidelined for much of the two sessions while the team worked on his car's engine. Ricciardo, who is already on his fourth engine for the season out of an allocation of four, ended up ninth and 13th. Frenchman Romain Grosjean brought out red flags when the engine cover of his Lotus blew off and shattered into pieces on the pit straight. Susie Wolff made the third practice appearance of her career with Williams, 40 years on from the only occasion on which a woman driver has finished in the points, and ended up with a faster time than two world champions. The Scot, who will not race on Sunday, was 14th fastest and ahead of McLaren's Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button -15th and 16th respectively. Valtteri Bottas then took the car back for the afternoon and was eighth fastest. Double champion Alonso was returning to the home circuit where he crashed heavily in pre-season testing, an accident that forced him to miss the Australian season-opener. He was an encouraging 11th in the afternoon.

Paes, Mirza lose in Madrid Open

MAdRid, MAy 8 (iANS): Indian tennis players Leander Paes and Sania Mirza both had to bite the dust as they lost their respective matches on the clay courts of Madrid Open here. Paes and Daniel Nestor lost in an hour and 20 minutes to wildcard pair of Spain's Feliciano Lopez and Max Mirnyi of Belarus. The seventh seeds went down 6-7(4), 3-6 in the men's doubles second round at the Caja Mágica. The first set was a neck-and-neck battle and had to be settled in a tie-breaker, which went in favour of the wildcard com-

bine. Lopez and Mirnyi got the lone break they needed on their third chance in the second set to settle matters in their favour. Later in the women's doubles quarterfinal, World No.1 Sania, partnering veteran Martina Hingis, went down 6-7(5), 6-3, 9-11 in an hour and 41 minutes to American-Czech seventh seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova. After sharing the first two sets, Bethanie and Lucie proved a tad bit better than their top seed opponents to come out on top in the super tie-break.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (AP File Photo)

Asked by Showtime whether he had noticed Pacquiao being hampered by his shoulder during their 12-round bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Mayweather replied: "Absolutely not." He then added: "He was fast. His left hand was fast. His right hand was fast and he was throwing them both fast and strong. Excuses, excuses." Barely one hour after the contest ended, Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, said the 36-year-old southpaw had been troubled by a previous injury to his right shoulder. "You guys saw the fight yourself. When you review

the film, you'll see how infrequently he threw the right," Arum told reporters. On Monday, an MRI scan in Los Angeles confirmed the Filipino had a torn rotator cuff and on Wednesday he underwent surgery. INITIAL WILLINGNESS ABOUT RE-MATCH Earlier this week, Mayweather said he would be willing to give Pacquiao a rematch next year, telling ESPN's Stephen A. Smith that he would delay his proposed retirement from the sport. "I will fight him in a year after his surgery," Mayweather told Smith in a text. Mayweather has one fight remaining on his Showtime

contract and has repeatedly said he intends to quit after a bout in September, although after Saturday's fight he told reporters that he is "human" and occasionally contradicts himself. On Thursday, however, the 38-year-old American made a complete U-turn on that statement. "Did I text Stephen A. Smith and say I will fight him again? Yeah, but I change my mind," said Mayweather. "At this particular time, no, because he's a sore loser and he's a coward ... If you lost, accept the loss and say, 'Mayweather, you were the better fighter'."

dORtMuNd, MAy 8 (iANS): German footballer Ilkay Gundogan will leave Borussia Dortmund by the end of the season, club manager Michael Zorc said on Friday. After negotiations, the club agreed not to extend his contract and that he would leave in the summer, Zorc explained, adding that the club had not yet received any offer to buy Gundogan. However, a few weeks ago, German media reported that Gundogan would perhaps join Manchester United. Gundogan's contract, which expires in the summer of 2016, will not be renewed so it is expected that he will leave when it expires, if not before, Borussia Dortmund representatives said a few days ago. The German international joined Dortmund in 2011 and a year later, won Bundesliga and the German Cup.
