NFHRCC calls for mobilisation of funds for the Foothill Road

‘Keep the foothill road alive’ Morung Express News Dimapur | October 10

The Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee held a meeting today at the treasurer’s residence in Dimapur. At the meeting, it was informed that the State government has released funds for works completed in the Mokokchung and Mon sectors. While appreciating the government for clearing the pending bills, the NFHRCC has urged the government to mobilise

funds for the successful completion of the project. In July this year, the NFHRCC was told by the Chief Minister that the government has no budgetary provision for the foothill road project for the year 2015-16 citing financial constraints. At the meeting today, the NFHRCC said that it “strongly resolved” to meet the CM and the Ministers in concern (State PWD and National Highways Ministers) as regards the urgent necessity to mobilise funds for the remaining phases of the project. According to the NFHRCC, the State government must treat the project – chris-

tened the ‘Survival Road’ – with priority and keep it alive. Further, the NFHRCC informed that it has resolved to direct the contractors for the Ao sector to resume work as the rainy season is drawing to an end. Work was temporarily stopped in the said sector because of the monsoon. Meanwhile, it was informed that work on the Doyang Bridge is progressing uninterrupted. With a projected completion time of 39 months, on site construction started in November 2014. Around 30 percent of works has been completed, it was informed.

As a young society, we have not developed the resilience to respond to changes,” he maintained. “Therefore we are at a loss to respond to problems of mental health and other issues.” Though the Nagas may be a religious people, there is a serious problem of spirituality. A value system needs to take shape that runs life. “This brings a spiritual experience—in our everyday response to life, saying yes to the right thing and no to the wrong, we evolve a doctrine and philosophy of life on how to live in Naga society,” postulated Iralu, noting that we cannot deny the responsibility of existence. “If each of us acquires resilience, a philosophy of life, we can reduce the proportion of the crisis and then respond to it, develop dignity and live out our actual spiritual life.” To avoid addictions, said the social activist, we need to keep going “far enough” with our everyday, and discover our “calling.” “The discovery of your calling will free you.” Mental Health has much to do with a calling to “be, do and develop” one self or the society. This can be discovered only with help from teachers in schools or the church where people can freely express themselves and be listened to. Then, we can begin to relax in the middle of a crisis and respond appropriately.

‘GBs need to work with the administration’ Morung Express News Dimapur | October 10

C M Y K

Nagaland Home minister, Y Patton, today said the institution of ‘Gaon Burah’ (GB) has withstood the test of time as an indispensable agent of the district and village administration since the time of the colonial era. “Over the years, the role of the GBs became more significant in the justice delivery system, particularly in the areas of upholding traditional values, customary practices and usages having a constitutional protection under Article 371 (A) of the Indian Constitution”, the Home Minister said. Addressing the silver jubilee celebration of the GB’s Union Dimapur at IMC Hall, Patton said the word ‘Gaon Burah’ (a generic Hindi term meaning ‘elderly man of a village) has, in the context of tribal Naga society, an encompassing meaning with “re-

Solution is now in the hands of Nagas: Patton

Nagaland Home Minister, Y Patton, today said settlement of the protracted Naga political problem now rests with the Naga people and not with the Government of India. Patton said after signing of the Framework Agreement and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurance to solve the Naga issue in a year’s time, it was now up to Naga people to decide how soon they want solution. “Solution is now in the hands of the Nagas and not Government of India. If Nagas are united, then solution is possible within a month also”, Patton said in his address at the silver jubilee celebration of GB’s Union Dimapur. The Home Minister informed he and Chief Minister, TR Zeliang, met the Prime sponsibility” attached to the institution. He said true to the title, GBs are expected to guide and advise others with a seasoned wisdom, irrespective of the age of a particular GB. Terming GBs as a bridge between the Government and public, the Home Minister said GBs

Minister a couple of times and in these meetings Modi had reiterated his desire and assurance to solve the Naga issue within a year. Calling for collective effort to bring together Naga political groups, Patton said GBs should lead the way in urging the various Naga political groups to unite and speak in one voice. Patton expressed concern that if the Naga groups do not come together and if factional killings continue, then Nagas would have no future. “Earlier, we were afraid of the Indian Army. But today, we are more afraid of the Naga undergrounds”, the Home minister said, alluding to the threats, extortions and internecine killings.

must work hand in hand with other agents of the administration and avoid conflicts while delivering justice at their level. Patton also said it is imperative for the GBs to have awareness on law and its implications to make themselves more conscious agents of the Government. In this respect, he

suggested that more seminars and awareness programmes be conducted for GBs so that they can acquire better knowledge on legal aspects. “GBs should be fair and impartial in their judgments so that the trend of dragging some cases to the court is avoided to a large extent”, he added. While congratulating

the GB’s Union for completion of 25 years, Patton said GBs of Dimapur have added responsibilities, taking into account the cosmopolitan nature of Dimapur with diverse culture, communities and religions. He said in a sensitive city like Dimapur where almost all North East militants have their presence, GBs have a crucial role in helping the district administration and police to maintain law and order. On issuance of permanent residence certificates and other certificates by colony or village GBs, the Home Minister said such certificates must be issued responsibly as random issuance could have far reaching consequences. Earlier, the Home Minister unveiled the monolith commemorating the silver jubilee of GB’s Union Dimapur at DC office complex, and also released the jubilee souvenir magazine.

So a counselor should keep in mind that teens are dealing with: Physical and hormonal changes; Pressure to determine a life path; Peer pressure; expectations/ disappointments about their future; All while they are trying to figure out who they are; Add to that any form of trauma or crisis and you can imagine the impact. Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member from Guwahati Bijoya Chakrabarty slammed Gogoi for his statement and said the chief minister had already destabilised the state during the 15-year Congress rule. "The Congress government in Assam has already destabilised Assam. The state has already been disorganised. There is no unity among people of different communities and the Congress has destroyed the social fabric that binds the different communities in Assam together," she said. "The chief minister knows nothing except corruption and people know this. The people of Assam also know what the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing for the region. Gogoi will get a strong answer from the people in next year's election," she said.

CBI raids Mallya’s offices, residences New delhi/beNgaluru/paNaji, OctOber 10 (iaNS): The CBI on Saturday conducted raids at residences and offices of liquor baron Vijay Mallya and his now grounded Kingfisher Airlines in connection with over Rs.900 crore loan to the airline by the IDBI and now declared a non-performing asset (NPA). The raids were conducted at five places - at offices of Kingfisher Airlines and at the residences of Mallya and others in Bengaluru, Mumbai and near Panaji, said Central Bureau of Investigation officials (CBI). “The raids are still on at five places of Mallya’s offices and residences in Mumbai, Bengaluru and in Goa in a case of allegedly violating banking norms in sanction and disbursement of Rs.900 crore to Kingfisher Airlines,” a CBI

spokesperson in New Delhi told IANS. The CBI had registered the case against Mallya, Kingfisher Airlines chief finance officer A. Raghunathan and unknown officials of the IDBI for allegedly violating banking norms in sanctions and disbursement of credit limit of over Rs.900 crore. The loan of Rs.900 crore was advanced by the IDBI bank despite the fact that there was uncertainty about huge loans earlier extended by a con-

sortium of banks to the airlines being paid. Some of the banks in the consortium have already declared Mallya as a “willful defaulter.” While registering the preliminary enquiry in 2014 into the questionable sanction of loan by IDBI, the CBI had said: “There was no need for the bank to take the exposure outside the consortium when already other banks loans were getting stressed.” Mallya’s airline has been grounded since October 2012. A string of Indian banks have an exposure of nearly Rs.7,000 crore in loans to the airline, with the State Bank of India leading with Rs.1,600 crore. The Punjab National Bank, Bank of India and Bank of Baroda have loan exposure in the range of Rs.800 crore, Rs.650 crore and Rs.550 crore.

Online retailer gears-up for festive sale New delhi, OctOber 10 (ageNcieS): Online customer can look forward for tempting offers from leading online retailers as they gear up for festive season starting Monday. While Flipkart and Amazon festive sales start on October 13, rival Snapdeal has

announced a special Monday Electronics Bonanza on October 12. One can expect discounts across personal devices, home appliances and other electronic devices on Snapdeal. You will find deals on mobiles and tablets, laptops and accessories, appliances, TVs and

cameras. Meanwhile, Amazon's Great Indian Festive Sale will go head to head against Flipkart's Big Billion Days from October 13 to October 17 in a bid to capture the mind- and marketshare in the burgeoning Indian e-commerce space.

liMa, OctOber 10 (iaNS): Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said the country's current account deficit has come down substantially to around 1.3 percent of GDP in 201415, as against around 4.8 percent two years earlier. Besides, he said while the country was suffering from double-digit inflation then, this has dipped to a low of 3.7 percent, an official statement said. In his lead intervention in the plenary session of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF)International Monetary and Finance Committee on Friday, he said India is uti-

lizing the regime of lower oil and commodity prices to increase investments in infrastructure and irrigation as well as to undertake comprehensive subsidy rationalization and successfully roll out the world's largest financial inclusion initiative under which around 185 million bank accounts have been opened. Due to the large number of initiatives underway encompassing multiple areas of intervention and reforms, Jaitley expressed optimism that India would continue to record higher level of growth. He emphasised that the IMF would be con-

strained in meeting its obligations if the IMF Quota and governance reforms are not implemented expressing concern at the unprecedented delay in implementation of the 14th General Review of Quotas. Jaitley also said that the global economic outlook outlined by the IMF does not look particularly encouraging as it has bearing on India's exports. Consisting of 24 members who are finance ministers, central bank governors or others of comparable rank, the IMFC is a key body providing strategic direction to the work and policies of the IMF.

Global semi-conductor sales to decline in 2015 MuMbai, OctOber 10 (iaNS): Worldwide semi-conductor revenue is forecast at $337.8 billion in 2015, a decline of 0.8 percent from 2014, IT research and advisory company Gartner said here on Saturday. This is the first decline in revenue since 2012 when the market fell 2.6 percent. This forecast is down from the previous quarter's forecast of 2.2 percent growth, it added. Global economic headwinds, such as the slowing Chinese economy and the strong dollar, are pushing up the cost of

electronic equipment in regions including Western Europe and Japan. This is leading to a reduction in outright sales and also encouraging buyers to shift to lower-cost equipment in these markets. "Once again the outlook for the major applications that drive the semi-conductor market, including PCs, smartphones and tablets, has been revised downward," Andrew Norwood, research vice-president at Gartner said. "This, combined with the continuing impact of the strong

dollar on demand in key markets outside of the US, has resulted in a decline in our forecast and a negative growth rate for 2015," he added. "Not only did the year start badly, but we are not seeing the typical ramp up in sales of semiconductors in many areas of the market in anticipation of the holiday season," Norwood added. "As a result, sales are not going to recover enough in the second half to halt an annual decline in semi-conductor revenue for 2015," he said. Gartner predicts a more positive outlook for 2016.

vancement of peace". The daily said that for now "it is enough to note that the proposal to open access to the economic corridor for India has credible commitment at the highest levels in China, and if there is any party in the world that can encourage a change in thinking in this country at least, it is the government in Beijing". The editorial went on to say that it would be better for the government of Pakistan to draw up a more realistic list of projects that they would like to see funded through the AIIB, and use the early years of the bank to build a relationship rather than go for broke with a proposal for a mega dam.

THE MORUNG EXPRESS

A silent struggle: Dignity in Mental Health Morung Express News Kohima | October 10

In the serene hill of Aradura is the State Mental Health Institute Kohima (SMHIK) which caters to the need of people struggling with intellectual disability. Away from Kohima’s hustle-bustle, it provides calmness and peace. Here, patients go through a lonely struggle with mental illnessmost stigmatized not just by society but by loved ones too. On October 10, the patients and staff of the SMHIK celebrated World Mental Health Day with well-wishers, media persons and Dr. Watikala Director (FW), Directorate of Health & Family Welfare as Chief Guest with the theme ‘Dignity in Mental Health.’ The inmates sang the song, ‘God Bless my Nagaland’ while one of the permanent male inmates sang a song by Methaneilie with the striking lines, “Kelhou hau simo te…Vorketa teiso kuo bu la vor thienyü…”(Life is

a puzzle/mystery. If only the past could be re-lived). Dr. Themmungla Raman, Clinical Psychologist who chaired the commemoration affirmed that dignity is an inherent value and worth of being human. Dr. Raman further shared that people with intellectual disability have so much love to offer and so much to give—‘Dignity is something we all desire’. Stressing on respect and dignity, Dr. T Wabang, Medical Superintendent, SMHIK, stated that these two are essential components of care which could produce major improvements in attitude towards people undergoing multitude of problems. A person suffering with severe and persistent mental illness can be treated with hospitalization, medication, skill building and talk therapy. He, however, noted that all these services become meaningless if the person is not treated with respect and dignity. Lack of dignity in treatment can

further lead a person to self-stigma, low confidence, low self esteem, withdrawal and social isolation. More than 450 million people globally experience mental problems each year and despite the common phrase ‘No health without mental health’, Dr. Wabang pointed out that people with mental health problems continue to face challenges in obtaining proper help. “One major reason which prevents people from obtaining good mental health care is the stigma and discrimination. People take mental health problem as a mark of disgrace, therefore people’s full participation in the society lacks and this deprives their dignity. To make dignity in mental health a reality, every member of society needs to work with each other to make mental health visible and not something to be ashamed of,” affirmed Dr. Wabang, adding that people need to know mental illness are just like any other physical illnesses and

that receiving help in the early stages of any illness results in better outcome and recovery. Talking about the misconceptions in society about intellectual disability, Dr. Watikala mentioned how in Naga society the illness is often considered a curse, thus stressing on the need for parents, families and teachers to play proactive role in identifying the problem in the child. She called for accessibility and affordability of medicines, quality healthcare and social care. The WHO states that 10% of the world population is affected by mental illness and one among every four persons is affected by mental illness once in a lifetime. Dr. Watikala shared on the WHO vision of mental health to promote de-stigmatization, prevent discrimination, segregation of victims and ensure social and economic inclusion. She urged churches and law enforcing agencies to also work towards

awareness, care and respect for victims of mental illness. At the commemoration, Dr. Leamnyei Konyak, SPO pointed out the various problems faced by the people with intellectual disability, often caused by ignorance in society. Dr. Konyak pointed out the negligence on the part of the government. Till today, the SMHIK is the only institute in Nagaland which treats patients suffering from intellectual disability with very limited staff. Dr. Konyak announced prospects of opening branches in Dimapur and Mokokchung by 2016. At the SMHIK, Aradura there are four permanent inmates. Negligence by the government ranges from poor diet to lack of medication. The inmates and staff sustain with the help of well wishers and at times, when there is dearth of money to pay for medication, the staff pools in money for the treatment of the permanent inmates.

With no transport department, Kiphire sees increase in vehicles without valid documents Our Correspondent Kiphire | October 10

More than 12 years after becoming a district, Kiphire is yet to have department of transport though the district has more than 120 taxis providing services to the citizens in two sub-divisions and 8 EAC headquarters. In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, Kiphire last year, the general secretary and president of All Nagaland Taxi Association, Kiphire unit highlighted the grievances

faced by the association. It pointed out that there is sharp increase in number of vehicles, especially taxis, and good number of them are being run without valid documents violating the Motor Vehicle Act. The letter also mentioned the temporary permits given, but stated the association cannot help much as there is no department to streamline the loopholes. The association also mentioned that to avail a taxi permit, they are asked to go to Tuensang. However, in Tuensang, they are

told that Kiphire is placed under Phek district. This, it said, is one of the reasons why many taxi owners are plying without documents. It was also brought to light that most of the vehicles used as taxis in the district are either from Assam or other states and most of them are suspected to not have valid documents. Nonetheless, citizens do not face any problem and drive around as if it is genuine due to absence of the department concerned to check. The issue is not only limited to vehicle documents;

While social media has transformed the flow of information, and the way people live and interact, it has also brought about an urgent need to holistically engage with this new paradigm of tweets and hashtags. With this in mind, the Young Indians (Yi) Nagaland today organized a Case Analysis and Presentation Competition at Patkai Christian College, Chumukedima. The event was sponsored by the Niathu Group. The participants, who

College, Patkai College and Unity College produced 5 minute films on the topic ‘The Effect of Social Networking on Naga Youth.’ This was followed by presentations by each team on their films and a question and answer session with the judges. The teams conducted case studies on the theme and came up with their analysis of it. The films focused on an array of issues, relating to social media in the Naga context. They analysed the emerging paradigm facilitated by social media,

online entrepreneurship; to the dangers of cyber crime and cyber bullying. Earlier, Hyunilo Anilo Khing, Yi Nagaland Chair, shared briefly about Young Indians, the movement’s reach across the country and how it constantly works to bring about positive developments in communities. Unity College Dimapur emerged winner of the competition and was awarded a trophy and a voucher, while one team from Tetso College, Dimapur bagged the runners up prize.

Young Indians (Yi) is an integral part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), a ‘non-government, not-for-profit, industry led and industry managed organisation’ playing a proactive role in India's development process. Yi was formed in the year 2002 with an objective of creating a platform for young Indians to realise the dream of a developed nation.

Dimapur, october 10 (mexN): The NSCN (R) today questioned the GPRN/NSCN as to why the latter “continues to arrest and harass NSCN-Reformation workers at gunpoint,” despite the former’s “commitment towards non-violence and brotherhood relationship among the Naga brothers.” A press note from the MIP of the NSCN (R) said that it was formed “not against any individual or organization but it came into being to restore the peace after the expulsion of its leaders and unilateral abrogation of 14 years ceasefire with GOI by SS Khaplang.” It reminded that as a commitment towards reconciliation, the NSCN (R) leaders met the NSCN (IM), GPRN/NSCN and NNC/

FGN within five months of its formation, the latest being the meeting with GPRN/ NSCN General Secretary, N Kitovi on August 26, 2015 at Kolkata, “where our leaders spent day long brotherhood discussion with the former.” Despite provocations, the NSCN (R) said that it has exercised restrain to avoid any forms of confrontation “since its leaders are committed for Naga peace and reconciliation.” The Naga people have seen enough bloodshed and fratricidal killings, it asserted, while maintaining that “Naga country belongs to every single Naga and we all must collectively move towards peace and reconciliation till it achieves acceptable solution.” At this juncture, attacking and harassment meted out to

fellow Nagas deserve condemnation and should not be encouraged under any circumstances, it stated. It further appreciated the “wisdom of NSCN (IM) leadership who reportedly instructed its workers not to confront other Naga political groups except, one incident of arresting an NSCN-Reformation worker as per the report.” “The prevailing situation that faced the NSCNReformation vis-a vis GPRN/NSCN’s threats for the last couple of months necessitated this statement to clarify its position for Naga peace and seeks response from the latter as to what is their hidden agenda towards the NSCNReformation and why continuously attacking its workers?” it said. “What

is the wrong they found in NSCN-Reformation and its ideology that, they resort to such action against it?” the NSCN (R) questioned. It further cautioned that the Naga publics “should not blame the NSCN-reformation for any resultant reaction or action in defense of its workers from being arrested and harassed, because the GPRN/NSCN targets only NSCN-Reformation workers while befriending with other Naga political groups.” It urged the GPRN/ NSCN leaders to “recall their expulsion in June 2011 by SS Khaplang before doing anything wrong against Y Wangtin Naga and P Tikhak, who also are the victims of same SS Khaplang as we shared equal pain and humiliation from the same man.”

A Barbie that talks with kids about God? It’s Coming Because Children Matters

arbie is soon going to be talking with kids. Mattel has teamed up with ToyTalk to turn the plastic toy into a girl with a personality and conversational abilities. The planned release date is November 2015. Talking Barbie will have more than 8,000 lines of dialogue at her disposal that have been

planned out according to conversations the company thinks kids might have with the doll. And with advanced technology, Barbie will also be able to remember information from previous conversations to bring up later. Some are showing concern, saying children can’t distinguish between artifi-

cial intelligence and actual human life as well as adults can. Professor Peter Kahn said, “In small doses, it just doesn’t matter, of course…but the way the world is going, these are not just going to become small, isolated technologies in a child’s life. They will become a pervasive form of interaction.” One of the questions

kids may ask is “Do you believe in God?” The planned response from Barbie may be, “I think a person’s beliefs are very personal to them.” This is a great reminder of how important it is to equip parents to have spiritual conversations with their kids. God has called parents to lead their children spiritually…not Barbie!

Being Special We Expect Respect The A Manifesto for Parents of Apple Children With Special Needs Tree A

Once Upon a Time

long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the treetop, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by, the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree every day. One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad. “Come and play with me”, the tree asked the boy. “I am no longer a kid, I do not play around trees anymore” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, but I do not have money, but you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad. One day, the boy who now turned into a man returned and the tree was excited. “Come and play with me” the tree said. “I do not have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, but I do not have any house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house.” So the man cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the man never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad. One hot summer day, the man returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree said. “I am getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” said the man. “Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time. Finally, the man returned after many years. “Sorry, my boy. But I do not have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you”, the tree said. “No problem, I do not have any teeth to bite” the man replied. “No more trunk for you to climb on.” “I am too old for that now” the man said. “I really cannot give you anything, the only thing left is my dying roots,” the tree said with tears. “I do not need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years,” the man replied. “Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest, come sit down with me and rest.” The man sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears. This is a story of everyone. The tree is like our parents. When we were young, we loved to play with our Mum and Dad. When we grow up, we leave them; only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they could just to make you happy. You may think the boy is cruel to the tree, but that is how all of us treat our parents. We take them for granted; we don’t appreciate all they do for us, until it’s too late. MorAl: Treat your parents with loving care For you will know their value, when you see their empty chair We never know the love of our parents for us Till we have become parents.

s parents of children with special needs, we deal with a wide variety of disabilities that raise a wide variety of concerns and require a wide variety of accommodations. We do not speak with one voice on many of the things our children specifically need to be safe and secure and included in the life of their community and the wider world. But there's one thing we can all agree on: our children deserve respect. They are not nuisances. They are not inconvenient. They are not impediments put in your way by troublemaking parents. They have a right to live and to learn and to play and to worship and to dine and to travel and to participate, by virtue of being human beings and citizens of their communities. We recognize that this may not always be easy, and we take re-

sponsibility for helping make inclusion happen instead of expecting it to be done for us. But the very first step, always, regardless of the situation, is respect. Respect our children. Respect our families. Or don't expect us to respect you. What does respect look like? It does not mean acceding to our every demand and accommodating every problem. (Though that would be fine.) It means taking our children's needs seriously, and working in a conscientious way to find an acceptable solution. It means stepping out in front and presenting a coherent and compassionate policy rather than waiting for a problem and reacting defensively. It means treating children with special needs and their families as you would any other customer, any other worshiper, any other taxpayer, any other voter, any other community member.

W o W

It means not sending out a message that says, "You know, we don't really serve your kind here." Because there are a lot of "our kind," and we are growing. We have been fragmented by our specific challenges and conflicting needs, but we now resolve to be united by our common expectation of respect. When you place an inflight snack choice above the life of an allergic child, you anger us all. When you care more about rude complaining diners than the family of a child with special needs, you eject us all. When you value worshipful silence over compassion for worshipers with disabilities, you wound us all. Whether or not our children share those same disabilities, whether or not we would have made the same decisions as those parents, we still know what lack of respect looks

like, and we will recognize it in your actions. And we will act. We will remember. We will find our voice as a special-needs community, and we will stand together. We will demand respect for our children and our families, and for the adults with dis-

abilities our children will become. You will find us to be fierce advocates. We would rather get respect without fear, but we'll take it any way we can get it. Do the math. And do the right thing.

There’s a lot going on in those little bodies, and it’s all amazing. Here are three fascinating facts about your baby’s development that you might not know.

Robert Needlman, a former associate professor of pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and vice president of developmental and behavioral pediatrics for the Dr. Spock Company. An average baby doubles his birth weight by 4 months and triples it by his first birthday. He also adds 1 to 1 ½ inches every month in height. detect sweet, bitter, and sour tastes from birth, they can't taste salt until they're 4 months old. That's when sodium-sensitive receptor proteins begin to emerge in the taste buds. The ability to taste salt may be related to the development of the kidneys, says neuroscientist Lise Eliot, an associate professor of neuroscience at Chicago Medical School and author of What's Going On in There? How the Brain and Mind Develop in the

First Five Years of Life. The kidneys start to use sodium when babies are about 4 months old. This appears to be hardwired into the child development process and unrelated to the volume of cheese puffs you consumed while pregnant. Baby eyesight milestone At birth babies' eyes are already 75 percent of adult size, but their vision is a blurry 20/2400. That means they can only

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

Bearing with one another in love Scripture passage: "As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit-- just as you were called to one hope when you were called-- one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. " --- Ephesians 4:1-6 (NIV) Paul, a prisoner for the Lord: Paul is reminded of his captivity in Rome. He refuses to regard himself as a victim either of the Jews or of the Roman emperor; rather, he is the prisoner of the Lord Jesus Christ. He insists that his imprisonment is a mark of his apostleship. The call for unity: As in his other writings, Paul turns from doctrinal concerns to practical ones. Significantly, the first item on his agenda is the need for Christians to live together in love and unity. It is as a prisoner for the Lord that Paul makes his appeal. He urges the Ephesians to lead the sort of life that matches their Christian vocation. There must be a balance between one's profession and one's practice. So Paul provides a criterion by which possible courses of action can be weighed. Christians will always seek to do what is most in keeping

"Make every effort" suggests difficulty and a resolute determination to overcome it. It is assumed that unity between Christians already exists as given in Christ by the Spirit. The "one Spirit" is the agent of unity. Through the Spirit, Christians can attain a profound oneness. Peace is the clasp that ensures that this God-given unity will not fall apart.

with their calling. By definition this is a calling they have received and not one they have acquired by self-effort. Those who share such a divine call constitute the church, the "calledout company" of those who are in Christ. The four graces: The apostle now specifies four graces that evidence this essential proportion between calling and character: humility, gentleness, patience, and forbearance. These are all qualities necessary for good relations with others in the Christian community and beyond. Humble in classical Greek was a derogatory term suggesting low-mindedness and groveling servility. The adjective was redeemed by the gospel to represent a distinctively Christian virtue and stands over against the admired high-mindedness of the heathen. Linked with being humble is being gentle or considerate. The element of restraint is included so that it denotes controlled strength and not lethargic weakness. Being patient is a characteristic of God himself. It can mean steadfastness in the endurance of suffering but more often it describes reluctance to avenge wrongs. It is to be displayed to other Christians and to everyone else. Christians must put up with each other's faults and idiosyncracies, knowing that all of us have our own shortcomings and flaws. Love is a recurring theme in Ephesians. The four graces Paul recommends here are all aspects of love and are exemplified to perfection in Christ.

Selie Visa Determination to overcome difficulty: The absence of humility, gentleness, patience, and forbearance may jeopardize Christian unity. That is why Paul presses his readers to exert all their powers to maintain the oneness in Christ that binds all believers to each other because they are bound by him and to him.

Preserving unity: "One body" depicts the church as a single visible community. Christians are all members of the same body. "One Spirit" indwells this body of Christ. By him the body lives and moves. The Spirit is its soul; apart from him it cannot exist. This Spirit who has already spanned this widest of all gulfs will bring together all other diverse groups within the church. The Holy Spirit is also the guarantor of the "one hope" to which we are called. It is the hope of sharing Christ's glory at the end of the age, a hope shared by both Jewish and Gentile Christians. The three expressions of one body, one spirit and one hope may well be intended to convey a single idea, i.e., one Lord in whom we all believe and in whose name we are baptized. Christ is central. He is the sole Head of his body, the church. "One faith" in the one Lord unites all true believers. Faith here is personal commitment to Christ, though it is not purely subjective. It involves recognition of who he is as Son of God and Savior of humankind.

"One baptism” is the external seal of incorporation into the body of Christ. Baptism is the sacrament of unity. There is one baptism, symbolizing identification with Christ in his death and resurrection so that all Christians become one in Christ Jesus. Baptism provides the evidence that all Christians, without discrimination as to color, race, sex, age, or class, share the grace of Christ. The last in the ascending scale is the "Father." He is not associated with other unities like the one Spirit and the one Lord. He stands alone. There is only "one God," not many as in pagan culture. He is the Father of all. He is the creator of the universe and everything in it. God reigns over all in his transcendent sovereignty. And over all virtues put on love: "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity" (Colossians 3:12-13). Christians are chosen of God, holy (set apart by and for God), and dearly loved by God. Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience are great Christian virtues. They point to those qualities of life which, if present in the community of believers, will reduce or eliminate any frictions among the believers. All these virtues are manifestations of love.

Peaches in Paradise—Why I Loved Elisabeth Elliot

A

John Piper

t 6:15 this morning, Elisabeth Elliot died. It is a blunt sentence for a blunt woman. This is near the top of why I felt such an affection and admiration for her. Blunt—not ungracious, not impetuous, not snappy or gruff. But direct, unsentimental, no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is, no whining allowed. Just pull your britches on and go die for Jesus—like Mary Slessor and Gladys Aylward and Amy Carmichael and Gertrude Ras Egede and Eleanor Macomber and Lottie Moon and Roslind Goforth and Malla Moe, to name a few whom she admired. Her first husband, Jim Elliot, was one of the five missionaries speared to death by the Huaorani Indians in Ecuador in 1956. Elisabeth immortalized that moment in mission history with three books, Through Gates of Splendor, Shadow of the Almighty and The Savage My Kinsman, and established her voice for the cause of Christian missions and Christian womanhood and Christian purity in more than 20 other books, and 40 years of hard-hitting conference speaking.

ried; she also lost her second husband, Addison Leitch, four years after her remarriage. Now it’s time to reveal a little secret. For 17 years, I have from time to time spoken of a certain woman on a panel with me about the topic of world missions. This woman had heard me speak on Christian Hedonism. So on the panel she said, “I don’t think you should say, ‘Pursue joy with all your might.’ I think you should say, ‘Pursue obedience with all your might.’” To this I responded, “But that’s like saying, ‘Don’t pursue peaches with all your might, pursue fruit.’” Well, that was Elisabeth Elliot and the panel was at Caister (the EFIC summer gathering) on the east coast of England. She was allergic to anything that smacked of mushy, mawkish, sentimentalistic emotionalism. Amen, Elisabeth! O how I loved sparring with someone I could not have felt more in tune with.

graphed for the perfection and fulfillment of each participant. When we deal with masculinity and femininity, we are dealing with the “live and awful shadows of realities utterly beyond our control and largely beyond our direct knowledge,” as Lewis puts it. A Christian woman’s true freedom [and, of course, she would also say a Christian man’s true freedom] lies on the other side of a very small gate—humble obedience—but that gate leads out into a largeness of life undreamed of by the liberators of the world, to a place where the Godgiven differentiation between the sexes is not obfuscated but celebrated, where our inequalities are seen as essential to the image of God, for it is in male and female, in male as male and female as female, not as two identical and interchangeable halves, that the image is manifested.

Her Womanhood And then there was her tough take on feminism and her magnificent vision of sexual complementarity. When Wayne Grudem and I looked around 30 years ago for articulate, strong, female complementarian voices to include in our book Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, she was at the top of the list. But the list was not long. Partly because of her voice, that list today would be so long we would not know where to stop. I love her for this influence. Her chapter in our book is called “The Essence of Femininity: A Personal Perspective.” The title is intentionally (and typically) provocative. She was already seeing with the eyes of a prophetess. Christian higher education, trotting happily along in the train of feminist crusaders, is willing and eager to treat the subject of feminism, but gags on the word femininity. Maybe it regards the subject as trivial or unworthy of academic inquiry. Maybe the real reason is that its basic premise is feminism. Therefore it simply cannot cope with femininity. She spoke, on the one hand, “from the vantage point of the ‘peasants’ in the StoneAge culture where I once lived”, and on the other hand from a sophisticated vision of how the universe is put together: What I have to say is not validated by my having a graduate degree or a position on the faculty or administration of an institution of higher learning. … Instead, it is what I see as the arrangement of the universe and the full harmony and tone of Scripture. This arrangement is a glorious hierarchical order of graduated splendor, beginning with the Trinity descending through seraphim, cherubim, archangels, angels, men and all lesser creatures, a mighty universal dance, choreo-

Heidi Baker quotes on Love, Compassion and Ministry

H

“Why go to the ends of the earth if you have nothing to give?” “We must give up all that we are in order to possess all that He is.” “Ministry is not about where you are or where you go, it is about where He is.” “If we are not full of Him we have nothing to offer to anyone else.” “It’s not complicated. Just love the one in front of you.” “I don’t want to grow up, I want to grow down” “If you stand, worship, and love God in the midst of lack and difficulty, you will never lose” About Heidi Baker Heidi Baker and her husband Rolland began Iris Ministries, Inc., an interdenominational mission, in 1980 and have been missionaries for the past twenty-five years. She was ordained as a minister in 1985 after completing her BA and MA degrees at Southern California College in Biblical Studies and Church Leadership. Heidi was powerfully called to the mission field when she was sixteen and living on an Indian reservation as an American Field Service student. She was led to the Lord by a Navajo preacher. Several months later she was taken up in a vision for several hours and heard the Lord speak to her and tell her to be a minister and a missionary to Africa, Asia and England. When she returned home to Laguna Beach, California, she began ministering at every opportunity and leading short-term mission teams. Rolland and Heidi met at a small charismatic church in Southern California and married six months later after realizing they were united in their calling and desire to see revival among the poor and forgotten of the world.

Battle for Bihar: No cakewalk for anyone Patna, OctOber 10 (IanS): Some 66.8 million people will be eligible to vote from Monday in staggered assembly polls in Bihar in the biggest popularity test in the country since the BJP was routed in Delhi in February. After weeks of noholds-barred campaigning in which the key players hurled real and perceived abuses at one another, the Bihar clash will show if Prime Minister Narendra Modi still retains his charisma or not. If pre-election surveys are to be believed, it will be no cakewalk for anyone including the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as well as the Grand Alliance of the ruling JD-U, RJD and Congress. Some surveys have forecast a narrow win for the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led coalition in the 243-seat assembly. Others predict a win for the fourparty alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJP allies are Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the RLSP of union minister Upender Kushwaha and former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustan Awa-

mi Morcha (HAM). The five-phase elections end on November 5. The vote count is due on November 8. The Left parties have ended their long bonhomie with the JD-U and RJD, and are on their own, but unlikely to make a big impact. There is also a Third Front led by the Samajwadi Party. And although it has put up only six candidates, the MIM of Asaduddin Owaisi is making waves. But everyone agrees that the main battle will be between Modi and Nitish Kumar, who once sailed in the same boat but are now bitter foes. Modi is taking no chances. He is poised to set a record by addressing around 40 rallies in the state - the most by any prime minister. Socio-political analyst Soroor Ahmad said no prime minister before Modi had visited Bihar more than two-three times during assembly elections. "Modi's credibility and charisma will be in doubt if the BJP suffers a defeat," warned Jai Prakash, an activist. After leading the BJP to a sensational victory in the

21 held for violence, cow slaughter rumours in UP

LUcKnOW, OctOber 10 (IanS): Twenty one people were arrested on Saturday in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri area for spreading rumours about cow slaughter and indulging in violence, officials said. Cases were also registered against 250 people for their role in the violence in which people pelted stones at the police, torched several vehicles and lay siege to an important road for several hours. Two people were beaten up badly on Friday after people alleged they had slaughtered a cow. As police tried to stop the unruly mob and whisked the two away, people went on the rampage, setting vehicles on fire and attacking police. The district administration said after a probe on Saturday that the charges of cow slaughter were found to be false. The cow was found dead in a field. The two accused - Lalla and Shafiq - were in fact skinning it. They hold a license for this job, district magistrate Chandrapal Singh informed. Residents, however, alleged the cow belonged to Rakshvadra of Karhal and that it had gone missing since Friday morning. Another writer to return award Rules change forces Missionaries of Charity to stop adoption Sara Joseph is the latest to join protest by writers and poets who have resigned and turned down honours in recent weeks

thrISSur, OctOber 10 (IanS): Joining the league of writers returning their Sahitya Akademi awards in the last few days, popular Malayalam writer Sarah Joseph said the Akademi's silence over writer Kalburgi's killing is condemnable and denounced the growing intolerance. "Sahitya Akademi did not utter a word on the killing of Karnataka writer and rationalist M.M. Kalburgi. Another writer Bhagavan faced death threats by some fringe groups and they threatened the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi too," Joseph told IANS over phone from Thrissur on Saturday. Joseph received the Sahitya Akademi award in 2003 for the novel "Aalahayude Penmakkal" (Daughters of God, the father). Her announcement to return the award comes in the wake of 10 other awardees having returned their Akademi trophies and positions. Denouncing the growing intolerance in the country, Joseph said she was appalled at the current happenings. "As a writer, I am upset at what is happening right now. We have no freedom to eat what we like or write what we want. It is appalling," said Joseph, adding that the killings of

rationalists Pansare and Dabholkar are testimonies to the growing intolerance. Alleging that the revisionist forces in the country were trying to clip the wings of writers, Joseph said Tamil writer Perumal Murugan was the first writer to face attacks. "Clipping the wings of a writer is suicidal. The revisionist forces in the country are trying to do that. It started with the Tamil writer Perumal Murugan and they are still at it," she said. Taking exception to the cancellation of a concert by legendary Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali in Mumbai, Joseph said the country was heading towards fascism."How can one stop Ghulam Ali from singing in India in the name of religion? It's ridiculous," she said, adding that democracy is facing the greatest threat ever under the Narendra Modi government. Joseph also criticised Prime Minister response to the lynching of a man in Uttar Pradesh over rumours of eating beef. "Prime minister reacted on the Dadri lynching after President Pranab Mukherjee condemned it. Even then, it was a lukewarm response on the sidelines of Bihar elections," she rued.

"It was two months ago that the Missionaries of Charity decided to discontinue all our adoption work in India. It said that continuing the work, started by Mother Teresa, complying with all the provisions would have

The move comes after revised guidelines were notified in July mak-

The women and child development ministry had recently said they would identify those child care homes, which are not complying with the revised guidelines of the Juvenile Justice Act, one of which includes orphanages run by the Missionaries. Bengal civic polls: Trinamool registers massive victory

KOLKata, OctOber 10 (IanS): West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress scored a landslide victory on Saturday in the civic polls. The Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool won overwhelmingly in all the three municipal bodies - Bidhannagar in North 24 Parganas district, Asansol in Burdwan district and Bally in Howrah district. The Trinamool bagged 37 of the 41 wards in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and annihilated the opposition in the 16 wards of the erstwhile Bally municipality where an election was necessitated after the civic body was amalgamated with the Howrah Municipal Corporation. In the Asansol Municipal Corporation, the candidates from the ruling party have either won or are leading with wide margins in at least 70 of the 106 wards. Tell us one place where Ganga is clean: NGT asks Centre neW DeLHI, OctOber 10 (PtI): The National Green Tribunal today asked the government to "tell us one place" where the Ganga is clean and said that despite spending huge sums, the situation has gone from bad to worse. Expressing open displeasure over the government's lackadaisical approach towards ensuring cleanliness and uninterrupted flow of the Ganga, it said "we take it that almost nothing has happened in reality." The green panel, which was asked to act against industrial units polluting Ganga by the Supreme Court, said the Centre and

the states over the years have only been shifting responsibility and nothing concrete was visible on the ground. "Would you please tell us that is it correct that more than Rs 5,000 crore has been spent on Ganga in making it worse from bad. We don't want to know whether you have allotted this quantum of money to the states or have spent it yourself. "Out of the 2,500 km stretch of the river Ganga, tell us one place, where the condition of the river has improved," a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar asked.

The counsel appearing for Ministry of Water Resources told the bench that almost Rs 4,000 crore has been spent on the rejuvenation of the river since 1985 till last year. He said that Ganga Action Plan (GAP) Phase-I was launched as a centrally-funded scheme in 1985 and later GAP Phase-II was initiated in 1993 to improve the river's water quality. In 2009, 'National Ganga River Basin Authority' (NGRBA) was setup for pollution control in the Ganga. NGRBA, a World Bankfunded scheme, was aimed at effective abatement of pollution and conservation of Ganga and 70 per cent of

India risks backsliding on success against HIV: UN Air pollution major cause NEW DELHI, OctObEr 10 (rEutErs): New HIV infections in India could rise for the first time in more than a decade because states are mismanaging a prevention programme by delaying payments to health workers, the United Nations envoy for AIDS in Asia and the Pacific said. India's efforts to fight HIV have for years centred around communitybased programmes run for people at high risk of contracting the virus, such as sex workers and injecting drug users. The results won praise globally - annual new infections fell consistently and, overall, were reduced by more than half between 2000 and 2011. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February cut the federal AIDS budget by a fifth and asked states to fill the gap, even though their poorly-run bureaucracies were already slow in releasing funds to their AIDS prevention units. As a result, staff salaries have been delayed for months and prevention activities have slowed down. The decision was part of a wider strategy to de-

on slow bureaucratic processes. An official at the federal AIDS control department, part of the health ministry that oversees the programme, said delays in states disbursing funds were still widespread, with payments in some cases three months late. The AIDS control department official said there was a risk of a rise in new infections if the delays continue, but added such a scenario was at least a year away. The health ministry did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment on Rao's remarks.

centralize social spending and focus central government resources on building roads and railways to boost economic growth. In an interview with Reuters, the U.N. Secretary General's Special Envoy for AIDS in Asia-Pacific, J.V.R. Prasada Rao, warned "primitive" management by states would "ruin the programme". "When the new infections start rising, all the

good work that has been done will be washed away," said Rao, who said he based his view on interactions with several federal and state AIDS officials in the last six months. HeaLtH WOrKerS LeFt UnPaID Reuters reported in March that government data and letters obtained under right to information legislation showed state

treasuries were delaying payments and thousands of health workers had gone unpaid for months. In letters seen by Reuters, some states have cited a lack of clarity about how much they need to contribute to the programme under the new arrangement as a reason for delayed payments, and overall shortage of funds. Experts and state health officials also blame delays

InFectIOnS aVerteD India's free HIV/ AIDS drugs programme, launched more than two decades ago, has been highly successful. The World Bank estimates India's policy of targeting sex workers averted 3 million infections with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, between 1995 and 2015. Still, UNAIDS estimates India accounted for most of the 340,000 new infections in the Asia-Pacific region last year.

India's last nationwide AIDS estimates were released in 2012. Data for the next assessment is still being collected. Under the new funding arrangement, states are given a larger share of federal taxes but are no longer obliged to earmark funds for social schemes. Rao said the flow of funds has improved marginally in recent months after complaints from AIDS workers, but he urged states and politicians to do more. "We are getting complacent to the success," he said. "If we have to achieve the new goal of ending AIDS by 2030, you have to commit more resources."In the western city of Mumbai, Manoj Jani, project director of an organisation working with sex workers under the AIDS programme, said his 23 staff were demoralised because they have not been paid for four months. AIDS tests have been curtailed. "Workers are not able to travel for testing activities due to funding issues," Jani said. "We never thought we would see such a day."

of eye infection: Doctors

neW DeLHI, OctOber 10 (IanS): Air pollution in cities is emerging as the major reason behind the rise in eye allergies and conjunctivitis in people of all ages, doctors says. They say that the problem was serious, because if conjunctivitis and allergies are not treated in time they can lead to cornea problems affecting vision. "Almost all age groups are being affected by air pollution. Majority of patients are young children, middle aged and senior citizens," said Kamal B. Kapur, an opthalmologist at city-based Sharp Sight Centre.Kapur said the major reasons behind allergic conjunctivitis were substances like pollen or mold spores or chemical substances in the air. According to doctors, the high levels of pollutants like nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide in the air make the tear film of the eyes more acidic. Tears are a mixture of water, fatty oil, proteins, and bacteria fighting substances that maintain the lubrica-

tion of eyes. Talking about the ways to prevent eye allergies, eye care expert Samir Sud said: "One should not rub eyes directly even if fine particulates enter, rather wash eyes with water. After that they should apply a cool compress to help reduce inflammation." "Whenever there is direct contact with the allergen, an allergic reaction happens in the eye. Mostly this happens when there is dryness in the air. Once the infection is detected, chances are that the person will get it again and again," said Sud. According to a recent study, over 30,000 people in Delhi were detected with cornea infection last year caused by the deteriorating air quality and increasing particulates. "In more troublesome cases, you will need to see an eye doctor who might recommend oral antihistamines or anti-inflammatory eye drops or in severe cases, steroid eye drops may be prescribed to get relief," Sud added.

Rare Syria deal falls victim to Russian escalation BEIRUT/GENEVA, OcTOBER 10 (REUTERs): Russia's military intervention in the Syrian war has all but destroyed a deal agreed last month to halt fighting between warring sides in two areas of the west, unpicking a rare success for foreign-backed diplomacy in the four-yearlong conflict. Implementation of the deal agreed with U.N. help to extricate rebels from the town of Zabadani and trapped villagers from alFoua and Kefraya has effectively been shelved following Russian air strikes in support of President Bashar al-Assad, three sources familiar with the talks told Reuters. While local ceasefires in both locations continue to hold, this means it may be only a matter of time before fighting there resumes between insurgent groups on the one hand, and the Syrian military and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah on the other. The bleak outlook for the deal fits into a broader picture of escalation, as deepening foreign involvement further complicates a conflict that has already killed 250,000 people and shattered a nation. The deal brokered with Iranian and Turkish help followed a weeks-long offensive by the Syrian military and Shi'ite Islamist Hezbollah to capture the town of Zabadani near the Lebanese border from insurgents who are still holed up there. The rebels including the Sunni Islamist group Ahrar al-Sham and the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front had been waging a parallel attack on Kefraya and alFoua, two Shi'ite villages in the northwestern province

Syria rebels battle IS as airspace talks begin

BEIRUT, OcTOBER 10 (AFP): Rebels battled Saturday to reverse an Islamic State group advance on Syria's Aleppo, as Washington said it would resume talks with Moscow to avoid accidents in the skies over the war-torn country. Moscow meanwhile continued its aerial campaign in Syria, launching a series of new strikes overnight and into Saturday targeting areas in and around the regime stronghold of Latakia province. In the northern province of Aleppo, Islamist rebels including the powerful Ahrar al-Sham group recaptured one of several villages seized by IS in its Friday advance, a monitor said. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels were battling to take back a second village from the jihadist group, which is now within 20 kilometres (12 miles) of Aleppo city. The IS offensive has brought the jihadist group closer than ever to Aleppo, threatening to further complicate the situation in Syria's second city which has long been divided between government and rebel control. NKorea ready to stand up to any US threat PYONGYANG, OcTOBER 10 (AP): North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared Saturday that his country was ready to stand up to any threat posed by the United States as he spoke at a lavish military parade to mark the 70th anniversary of the North's ruling party and trumpet his third-generation leadership. The parade, which featured thousands of goosestepping soldiers and military hardware including missiles and drones mounted on trucks, kicked off what is expected to be one of the North's biggest celebrations ever — an attention-getting event that is the government's way of showing the world and its own people that the Kim dynasty is firmly in control and its military a power to be reckoned with. Kim walked down a red carpet and saluted his honor guard before walking up to a podium to deliver a

speech laced with the fiery rhetoric that is commonly used by the communist regime. "Our revolutionary force is ready to respond to any kind of war the American imperialists want," said Kim, flanked by visiting Chinese official Liu Yunshan and senior North Korean officials. "Through the line of Songun (military-first) politics, our Korean People's Army has become the strongest revolutionary force and our country has become an impenetrable fortress and a global military power," he said, interrupted by applause several times. Kim didn't specifically comment on North Korea's nuclear or long-range missile capabilities and also didn't have anything to say about relations with rival South Korea. He spent most of his speech arguing that the party has been successfully improving the lives of the North Korean people in

face of external threats since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War and declared it will continue to do so. In a military parade that followed, tanks, armored vehicles, rocket launchers and a variety of missiles mounted on trucks rolled by, while military planes flew in formation above the square, forming the symbol of the Workers' Party of Korea — a hammer, brush and sickle. Another group of planes formed the number 70 in the sky. An expert at the Korea Institute for Defense Analysis, a security think tank in Seoul, Jin Moo Kim, said North Korea revealed a new 300-millimeter rocket launcher. It also displayed drones and a KN-08 ballistic missile, with an estimated range of 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) that the country had previously shown off in 2012. Kim said the presence of Liu might have prevented the North from revealing its most provocative weapons.

media about the agreement. But the rebels are hoping Russia's intervention will lead to increased military support from their own foreign backers, particularly Sunni Saudi Arabia, which is locked in a struggle for influence across the region with Shi'ite Iran. Backed by Russian air strikes, the Syrian army and allies including Hezbollah this week launched new ground offensives against insurgents in two strategically important areas of

Hama province this week. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based organisation that tracks the war using sources on the ground, said on Friday they had yet to make significant territorial gains in those areas. The success of the U.N.backed negotiations had offered a rare ray of hope in the war where diplomacy has mostly made no headway. Iran had negotiated on behalf of the Syrian govern-

forces in the city, including a strategic road that leads from rebel-held Aleppo to the Turkish border. Elsewhere in Aleppo province, the Observatory reported a powerful blast in the town of Al-Bab, which is held by IS. Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said the blast hit an explosives factory and weapons depot belonging to the jihadists, but that the cause of the explosion was unclear. ment and Hezbollah. Ahrar al-Sham, one of the most powerful rebel groups in Syria, had secured a mandate to negotiate on behalf of a range of insurgent groups. The talks took place in Turkey, one of the states that supports the insurgents fighting Assad. The United Nations said on Oct. 2 it had been forced to suspend planned humanitarian operations in Syria under the ceasefire agreement due to "a surge of military activity". Initial

steps had included evacuations of wounded. The office of U.N. envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura at the time called on the parties to fulfil their responsibilities and to reach necessary understandings to implement the agreement. De Mistura's spokeswoman said on Friday the United Nations was ready to support implementation of the deal "once the final agreement of all the parties is received for the launch of the operation".

Twin bombs kill 86 at pro-Kurdish rally ANKARA, OcTOBER 10 (REUTERs): At least 86 people were killed when two suspected suicide bombers hit a rally of pro-Kurdish and leftist activists outside Ankara’s main train station on Saturday, weeks ahead of an election, in the deadliest attack of its kind on Turkish soil. Bodies covered by flags and banners, including those of the pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), lay scattered on the road among bloodstains and body parts. “Like other terror attacks, the one at the Ankara train station targets our unity, togetherness, brotherhood and future,” President Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement, calling for “solidarity and determination”. Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu told a news conference that 86 people had been killed and 186 wounded, 28 of whom were in intensive care. The death toll could rise further. Witnesses said the two explosions happened seconds apart shortly after 1000 a.m. as hundreds gathered for a planned march to protest over a conflict between Turkish security forces and Kurdish militants in the southeast.

“I heard one big explosion first and tried to cover myself as the windows broke. Right away there was the second one,” said Serdar, 37, who was working at a newspaper stand in the train station. “There was shouting and crying and I stayed under the newspapers for a while. I could smell burnt flesh.” There were no claims of responsibility for the attack. But the NATO member has been in a heightened

state of alert since starting a “synchronized war on terror” in July, including air strikes against Islamic State fighters in Syria and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) bases in northern Iraq. It has also rounded up hundreds of suspected Kurdish and Islamist militants at home. KURDISH MILITANTS’ CEASEFIRE The attacks, in the scale of casualties, exceeded events in 2003,

when two synagogues, the Istanbul HSBC Bank headquarters and the British consulate were hit with a total loss of 62 lives. Authorities said those attacks bore the hallmarks of al Qaeda. Saturday’s attacks came as expectation mounted that PKK militants would announce a unilateral ceasefire, effectively restoring a truce that collapsed in July. The government had already dismissed the anticipated move as an election gambit to bolster the HDP, whose success at June elections had helped erode the ruling AK party’s majority. Hours after the bombing, the PKK ordered its fighters to halt operations in Turkey unless they faced attack. It said through the Firat news website it would avoid acts that could hinder a “fair and just election” on Nov. 1. Footage screened by broadcaster CNN Turk showed a line of young men and women holding hands and dancing, and then flinching as a large explosion flashed behind them, where people had gathered carrying HDP and leftist party banners. “We are faced with a very big massacre, a vicious, barbarous attack,” HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas told reporters.

Obama meets Oregon families as two more die in campus shootings US human rights report biased: China

ROsEBURG, OcTOBER 10 (AFP): US President Barack Obama met in Oregon Friday with relatives of victims of a deadly rampage at a community college, as shootings ontwomoreschoolcampuses left two people dead and four wounded. Hundreds gathered outside the gate to the local airport to greet Obama, where he earned a mixed reception. While one sign said “Welcome to Roseburg,” others read “Obama is Wrong” and “Nothing Trumps Our Liberty” -- clear signs that the president’s visit to the rural, conservative community is not appreciated by all. Obama delivered an impassioned plea for stricter gun controls after last week’s shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, in which a 26-year-old gunman shot dead nine people and then committed suicide. “I’ve obviously got strong feelings about this,” he said during his hour-long meeting with families at Roseburg High School, attended by Oregon Governor Kate Brown, who previously updated the

president on efforts to support them. “We’re going to have to come together as a country, but today is about the families,” Obama said. But the father of one girl who was shot in the back and survived by playing dead accused the president of politicizing the tragedy, and said earlier this week that he had declined an invitation to meet him. “On principle, I find that I am in disagreement with

his policies on gun control, and therefore, we (the family) will not be attending the visit,” Stacy Boylan told Fox News. The publisher of the local paper, David Jaques, has also denounced the visit, saying Obama was not “welcome here to grandstand for political purposes.” The city of Roseburg had issued a statement prior to the visit saying such comments did not represent the community as a whole, and

that the president would receive a warm welcome. After meeting with families who lost loved ones, Obama thanked a group of first responders for their service and met with Umpqua Community College leaders to express his condolences. The October 1 shooting in Roseburg has revived the thorny debate on gun control in America -- and two more deadly incidents on Friday were sure

‘Confrontation’ in Arizona In Arizona, one person was killed and three others suffered multiple gunshot wounds at Northern Arizona University in the city of Flagstaff before the gunman was captured. The first emergency calls came through to police at 1:20 am, when most NAU students would have been in bed. “Two of our student groups got into a confrontation. The confrontation turned physical and one of our students shot the other students. Four of our students were shot,” said NAU police chief Gregory Fowler. “We have one student deceased and three others being treated at the Flagstaff medical center.” The alleged shooter, named by police as 18-yearold freshman Steven Jones, was taken into custody and did not attempt to escape arrest. All the victims were male students. It was not immediately clear what the confrontation was about, but Jones was cooperating with police, Fowler said.

NAU spokeswoman Cindy Brown told CNN that the incident occurred in a parking lot next to a residence hall on campus, which is a designated “gun-free” zone with 20,000 students. Students described how they were woken up by a university text message warning them of the shooting or by calls from worried friends and family.

One dead in Houston In Houston, one person was killed and another wounded in a shooting at a campus apartment complex at Texas Southern University, police said, adding that one possible suspect had been detained. Houston police said the incident “does not involve an active shooter,” but the university nonetheless placed the campus on lockdown and cancelled classes for the rest of the day. In the wake of the Umpqua killings, Obama angrily called on Congress to do more and warned that failure to act on gun control was a “political decision,” vowing to keep pushing for reform.

BEIJING, OcTOBER 10 (REUTERs): A U.S. congressional commission's criticism of China's human rights record did not "accord with the facts", the Chinese government said on Friday, the latest friction over a longrunning thorn in relations. The U.S. CongressionalExecutive Commission on China said on Thursday that it saw in China "a disturbing deterioration in human rights and rule of law conditions that pose a direct challenge to U.S. national interests and U.S.-China relations". The report comes weeks after Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington, during which U.S. President Barack Obama laid out concern over human rights. Foreig n Ministr y spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular briefing that U.S. officials and the American public must

be more objective. "This report has nothing new, embraces a persistent bias in order to make irresponsible remarks about China's domestic affairs, and makes criticisms that don't accord with the facts," Hua said. "China's 1.3 billion people have the greatest authority to pass judgement," she said. The U.S. commission said China was moving further away from a rule of law system and had increased pressure on civil society. It also criticised the state of religious freedom and Beijing's treatment of ethnic minorities. "President Xi has presided over an extraordinary assault on the rule of law and civil society", U.S. Representative Chris Smith, the commission's chairman, said in an emailed statement. Florida senator and Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio co-chairs the committee.

In the first match between defending champions Fusion Sporting Club and Elation Sports Association, the defending champions were held out resolutely by the new entrants Elation SA defense throughout the game. Fusion, which is one of the favorites at the trophy, missed some great opportunities at the match. The ball possession was in favor of Fusion, but at the 6th minute, there was a serious breach at the Fusion defense line and one of Elation striker shot a strong one which was deflected by the goalkeeper, but straight onto the legs of Elation’s Changtoshi Laomu (jersey no 11) who shot the ball straight into the net. But it was not fair to write of Fusion SC just yet. The counter attack was vicious as Fusion recovered quickly and made some great shots at the net. But to the credit of Elation, the defense line proved to be too strong for a clear shot. Then at the 17thminute, Fusion midfield breached the defenses and crossed

Holders Spain and Swiss 16TH NSF MARTYRS' MEMORIAL TROPHY join Euro 2016 finals party Pro-Streax United, Senapati FC storm into semi-final Our Correspondent

LonDon, october 10 (reuterS): European champions Spain beat minnows Luxembourg 4-0 on Friday to reach the Euro 2016 finals in France where they will aim to complete an unprecedented hat-trick of continental titles. They were joined by Switzerland as the eighth and ninth countries through to the expanded 24-team tournament. Spain made it eight wins out of nine with a comfortable victory over Luxembourg soured by injuries to forward Alvaro Morata and midfielder David Silva, who came off in the first half to be replaced by Juan Mata and Paco Alcacer respectively. Alcacer took his chance to impress with a double and Santi Cazorla also struck twice in a dominant win for La Roja. Spain will contest a 12th straight international tournament in France and will look to bounce back after going out of last year's World Cup in Brazil at the group stage when they were defending the title they won for the first time in 2010.

FLOODLIGHT FAILURE Switzerland made sure of their place by finishing second behind England in Group E when they beat San Marino 7-0 and Slo-

venia and Lithuania played out a 1-1 draw in their match affected for a spell by a partial floodlight failure. In all, nine matches were played on Friday with the penultimate round now completed in six of the nine groups and the places thinning out before next week's final qualifiers. While Spain were winning Group C, Ukraine's 2-0 victory in Macedonia and Slovakia's surprise 1-0 home defeat by Belarus means Ukraine or Slovakia will join Spain as the automatic qualifiers while both are guaranteed at least a playoff place. With England already through from Group E, the main points at issue against Estonia at Wembley was whether they would maintain their 100 percent record and if Estonia could keep alive their slim playoff hopes. England won 2-0 but because Slovenia and Lithuania drew, Estonia still have an outside chance of third place and a playoff spot albeit with the slimmest of mathematical probabilities. Estonia meet Switzerland in their final match on Monday, Lithuania host England and San Marino welcome Slovenia when Slovenia, Lithuania or Estonia will finish third.
