Our Correspondent Kohima | October 17
Chief Minister TR Zeliang on Saturday called to attention that the Nagas were badly in need of unity in order to translate the August 3 Framework Agreement into a conclusive and peaceful resolution. “Now that the Naga political issue has entered into a new phase with the signing of the Framework Agreement between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM), we are badly in need of unity, at this crucial time, to translate the agreement into a conclusive and peaceful resolution of the Naga political issue,” Zeliang said while addressing ‘Leaders Walk the Talk’ event organized by Leaders Arise Nagaland (LAN) at the local ground, Kohima. He called upon the leaders of Nagaland, including the political leaders, the church leaders, the tribal leaders, the civil society leaders, and the leaders of the Naga nationalist groups etc. to rise to the occasion. “We have to collectively address the needs of the situation. At this point
of time we have to sink our petty differences, misunderstandings, forgive and forget the wrongs and not to point fingers at each other, and unite for the sake of the present and future generation of the Nagas,” the chief minister invoked. Zeliang also stressed on the need to rope in the youth in large measure, if “our movement is to make a really meaningful and significant impact.” The chief minister felt that in this age of computer and internet, the youths were progressively becoming the drivers of the society. “We need to educate our youths to use the social media platform, such as Naga blog, Naga spear on facebook, SMS, twitter and WhatsApp etc in the right perspective,” he said. Zeliang said the youths can set the tone and agenda for many changes and social reforms through the use of technology and social media. At the same time, he also cautioned that misuse of technology could inflict irreparable damage to the society within a short span of time. The chief minister also expressed gratitude to Rev Luoliehu Yimsung,
With my feet planted on the earth my ancestors toiled upon, my voice resonates from the top of Samarati to Dzukou valley, I will put the well being and prosperity of my people, before my own and I will work hard for a better tomorrow, for my people. I will make this pledge with my conscience and humility. So help me God.
founder LAN, at whose initiative the event was organized. After spending several years of useful and active service in Australia, he has come back home with a mission to transform our society, through innovative concepts and approaches, Zeliang said. He also believed that the ‘Leaders Walk the Talk’ is an event essentially aimed to awaken the Naga leaders and remind them of their heavy responsibilities at this critical time of history. Rev Luoliehu Yimsung, in his address, said the ‘Leaders Walk the Talk’ initiative would be taken to every district of the State annually and therefore called upon the public to take the ownership of the event. Minister for Roads & Bridges Y Vikheho Swu; Naga Mother’s Association advisor Dr Rosemary Dziivichii, Angami Public Organization president Dr Vilhousa Seleyi, Rev Dr Chingmak Chang, Kezhokhoto Savi, adviser LAN, ACAUT Nagaland and NMA, Yanpvuo Kikon, founder Naga Blog and Pheluopfelie Kesiezie also spoke on the occasion.

North East strategic importance to India
C M Y K
DimaPUr, october 17 (mexN): Promoting North East with the rest of the country, creating a positive perception, building connectivity with South East Asian countries and improving infrastructure were the chorus from speakers at a panel discussion held at the second day of the 3rd edition of North East Festival (NEF), underway at IGNCA in Delhi. The topic for discussion, ‘North East’s strategic importance to India and Act East Policy’ assume paramount significance to the development of the North East region and saw active and enthusiastic participation from representatives of all states of the region. “There is a need to promote the North East and build bridges with the rest of the country. We also need to create a positive perception about the region, so that investors and businesses see the region as a viable option,” Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser-in-chief, NEF
stated in his opening remark at the panel discussion held on Saturday. Contrary to the widely held view that development and commerce is being stunted because the region is landlocked, Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Professor, University of Gauhati believed that the North East can develop on its own. As a region, it historically had seamless connectivity with South Asian countries and that should be looked at once again, Dr. Mahanta pointed out adding, “What is required is integration of road; rail and water transport and people to people connect.” In similar vein, Ravi Capoor, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India evoked that during the pre-independence days, North East was one of the most prosperous regions. “There used to be free flow of trade, commerce and people between the countries,” he maintained. Pointing out that there are
around 20% North East people working in the outsourcing industry, as per NASSCOM figures, Capoor was of the estimation that if the region can improve the internet and digital connectivity, there was no reason why it cannot become a major IT hub of the country. “That alone can contribute significantly to the development of the region,” he said. According to Ram Madhav, National General Secretary, BJP, the emotional disconnect between the people of North East and the rest of the country is one’s own creation. He claimed that the government of the day is committed to bridge this emotional disconnect while asserting, India’s development is not complete without the development of North East. “The GoI is taking many steps for development of the region and talking to Bangladesh and other SAARC nations as well. As part of our Look East Policy, we are look-
ing to improving the physical connectivity and infrastructure in the region,” he stated. He added, “I believe that clean and efficient governance is also required for the development of the region. Our priority is on developing good relations with our neighbors, and the biggest beneficiary of that would be the North East region.” Joint Secretary, Ministry of DoNER, AM Singh said the ministry is trying to sort out all issues related to trade and commerce in the region and said it required coordinated effort from all the stakeholders. “At DoNER, we are trying to provide a lot of opportunities to facilitate investments in the region. The most important thing is that we need to believe in the North East,” he enlightened. The 3rd edition of the NEF was inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal on Friday. It will conclude on October 18.

Indian Dentist Association Nagaland State Branch 13th Conference
Nagaland one of the first “Tobacco free dental clinics” in India Our Correspondent Kohima | October 17
The Indian Dentist Association, Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB) held its 13th conference & AGM at the Capital Convention Centre here from October 15 to 16 last with minister for environment forest & climate change Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kire stressed on the need to conduct extensive oral camps in schools and rural areas in the state in order to encourage good habit of oral health. He was appreciative of the Association for making an effort to promote oral health in the state. He also felt that more post of dental surgeons be created in the state. The minister also extended support to the association as it prepares to host 2017 North East Dental conference in Nagaland.
“We continue to lay great emphasis on the promotion of oral health literacy and the development and upgrading of clinician’s skills and knowledge through continuing dental education,” said Dr. Temjennungsang Longchari, president IDANSB in his presidential address. He said the Association, having 130 members is on the 17 years of its formation and it has made steady progress. He said despite problems and lack of funds its members have voluntarily supported many public-spirited programmes across the state and the quality of service have been largely satisfactory and success. Dr. Longchari said the Association has been continuously making an effort in the form of preventing disease and creating awareness on oral health among the public. It focuses tobacco free

Nagaland campaign by making tobacco use a new vital sign in doctor’s prescription and the declaration of Tobacco Free dental clinic, offering a wonderful opportunity to showcase best practices while educating communities on improving oral health care, preventing and cessation of tobacco products use. He said Nagaland has become one of the first Tobacco free dental clinics in India. He was optimistic that
the National Report of GATS India global Adult Tobacco Survey and others would now show much lowered tobacco prevalence in Nagaland, otherwise Nagaland is the 2nd highest consumer of tobacco in India. “Our vision is a future free of oral diseases and dental pain-eliminating oral disease and dental pain is a monumental, lofty and challenging goal to say the least,” Dr. Longchari said. He said that Associa-
tion have made significant progress in promoting and improving oral health, yet “we speculate that only about a quarter of needed oral care is provided every year because 71% of the population Nagaland are in rural area according to census 2011 and they are left without any oral health centre.” He said the dental surgeons in Nagaland are positioned with only 30 in regular state service in DH and CHC, 3 in directorate
and 17 in NRHM on contractual basis and the rest are in private clinics in urban areas The IDANSB had submitted proposal on 20 August 2015 to the principal director, health & family welfare for upgradation of post from the level of deputy director and above for dental cadres. As per the Nagaland Health service Rule 2006, there is no provision for promotional avenues for the dental surgeons above
the level of additional director. The service rule 2006 clearly suppressed dental surgeons by inscribing Note- II page 22 which described that dental surgeons are not eligible for further promotion. The IDANSB viewed this clause as discriminatory to the man-power professionals of dentistry working under the department of health & family welfare. Talking on “Status of dental surgeons in the state”, Dr. N Savino additional director DHF &W said that out of 130 qualified dental surgeons in Nagaland only 48 dental surgeons are working in government sector and 82 plus are unemployed. Dr. Savino said that unemployment of dental surgeon was due to less opportunity or provision to employ and added there should be equal opportunity of employment for both BDS and MBBS. He said there was no provision to depute to NHM/NSACS, no provision to accommodate as
K
program officer, no provision for promotion to higher status at directorate and no provision to promote senior dental surgeon at district level. Dr. Savino requested for creation of director (dental) post at directorate, creation of district dental officer at district equivalent to CMO, junior dental surgeon post in the remaining CHCs as per provision (IPHS), dental post in every police battalion, short term training course for in- service dental surgeon and expansion of the unit/department. Earlier, Dr. Roshni Chattopadhyay, technical product specialist in dentsply and Dr. Nungotso Vero, junior dental specialist, Phek Civil Hospital delivered lecture during pre conference with Dr. Pfukrolo Koza and Sentirenla Jamir as moderators. The programme was chaired by Dr. Hotokhu Chishi joint director DHF&W while welcome address was delivered by Dr. Nzanthung Humtsoe, hon. state secretary IDANSB. Some of the aspects that the team observed are that in spite of narrow roads and by-lanes as compared to Kohima Town, the movement of vehicular traffic is flawless in Aizawl City. There is hardly any instance of traffic jam in the city. Unofficially declared as a silent city, almost all the area is imposed with NO HONKING ZONE. Even the traffic personnel on duty hardly requires to blow his whistle and mostly uses hand signals to give directions as the citizen of the city maintain a high level of discipline and civic sense while driving and strictly comply to the traffic rules and guidelines. The traffic constables are able to fully control the traffic regulation
without the assistance of Traffic officers as the general public are well verse with traffic law and disciplined drivers. They maintain lane driving and do not overtake vehicles unless there is an emergency. The city is well maintained and is one amongst the cleanest cities in the country. Sushant Singh The Indian Express
India’s conduct in fighting counterinsurgencies has been far from exemplary. Not only human rights groups, but even courts and commissions have found that the security forces have often acted in a brutal and brazen manner on internal security duties. The public debate over the conduct of our security forces has been limited to Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Indubitably, there is much that is wrong with AFSPA, but restricting the debate to AFSPA hides what happens beyond and under the scope of AFSPA. This is the area in which Kishalay Bhattacharjee’s “Blood on My Hands: Confessions of Staged Encounters” shines through. It is, perhaps, the only book where a serving army officer, who has done counterinsurgency duties in Assam and Manipur, explains in detail how the system works. Although Bhattacharjee doesn’t disclose his identity, it is not very hard to surmise that the officer is a Colonel, who has commanded his infantry battalion and is now serving in a staff posting. Although his confessions relate to the North East, most of the officer’s insights apply to other counterinsurgencies in India as well. For example, the classification of encounters into real, fake and false encounters. A real encounter is a genuine action between militants and soldiers; a fake encounter is when a genuine militant is killed in a staged action, while a false encounter means killing an outright innocent individual.

A lot of us would be willing to overlook a fake encounter but would definitely feel outraged by the killing of an innocent individual. Why does a false encounter happen? It is not a result of some sinister motives; rather, it is primarily driven by a quest for results within the army. Each unit wants to do well, earn a unit citation which needs a certain number of points. Points are awarded for each “kill”, weapons captured, surrenders and so on. The officers in the units want to do well, get more medals and be ahead in the race for promotions. Insurgencies in decline present the toughest challenge. The senior commanders are still judging the results based on previous yardsticks when the militancy has gone down. It creates tremendous pressure on the unit and its commanding officer. This was particularly faced in the Kashmir Valley in the early 2000s when many of my friends posted with the Rashtriya Rifles found that a senior officer ask only one question on visiting them at their posts: “How many kills in the last two months?” Nothing else mattered. Through that officer’s confession, Bhattacharjee builds the picture of a conflict economy where every-
thing from weapon to innocent persons are available for money, and that money can come from the local army units allowing smuggling of drugs and timber. There might be some exaggerations in his account, and the situation in Kashmir where I served in uniform, was not as benign as in Assam, but it tells you of a system where everyone from political leadership to police to the army is in cahoots. The state has withered away to such an extent that there are no institutions which can provide checks and balances in a conflict torn area. To add to the armyman’s confession, Bhattacharjee introduces us to Ananta Kalita, who miraculously survived a false encounter as the bullet into his forehead passed through his left jaw. He was pushed off the cliff but survived to tell the tale. Then there are other explosive revelations. One chapter features some controversies which mattered in the saga of succession of army chiefs in the recent years. Although Bhattacharjee mentions no names, it is not hard to guess the army chief who went as the governor of Arunachal Pradesh, or who was commanding 3 Corps when his intelligence unit got
involved in a dacoity case. For those in the know, the identity of a Muslim general who served in Northern Command allegedly being provided women by two brothers serving in the army is rather easy to guess. Some people argue that these ugly actions mentioned in the book are needed to defeat insurgencies. They are wrong. These ugly tendencies only come to the fore when militancy has been contained and the violence controlled. The time is then ripe for the military to move out. For fears of revival of militancy or a lack of civil setup, the government plays safe by keeping the army there under the protection of AFSPA. Having developed its own institutional interests, the military is not keen to move out either. The conflict economy gets entrenched deeper and the cycle perpetuates itself. The answer lies in finding a way to wean the state
away from military support once militancy has peaked and is in decline. India has a few successful examples that are worthy of emulation: Mizoram and Tripura. The other alternative is to keep the military away as was done in Punjab where the state police took the lead in fighting militancy. Although Bhattacharjee devotes two chapters – one in the beginning and one in the end – he does not delve into this important area. These two chapters, focused on theory and academic research, also take away from the centerpiece of the book, the army officer’s confessions. Many of the things mentioned in the book, perhaps, cannot be proven in a court of law. But it does not mean that they are not true. An awareness of how things happen, as detailed by Bhattacharjee in Blood on My Hands, is in fact essential to understanding India’s challenge in fighting and winning counterinsurgencies.

Subject: HUMBLE WITHDRAWAL OF OUR TRADITIONAL CONSENT AND INABILITY OF CHANGTONGYA VILLAGE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE OATH TAKING CEREMONY ON 16-10-2015 AT MILAK. Sir, Apropos the above mentioned subject with due respect, I have the honour to state a few lines on behalf of Changtongya Village for your kind information and necessary action. Our village had received the Notice dated 12-10-2015 from your esteem authority directing to appear for TRADITIONAL OATH TAKING on 16-10-2015 with regard to Milak River dispute with Yimjenkimong Village. The Changtongya Villagers were earnestly praying for God's deliverance to reveal the truth. In the meantime, we were much surprised to see the 'Submission of report in reference to case No.04/14, Milak River dispute between Yimjenkimong Village and Changtongya Village under Mokokchung District’ dated 25/9/2015, submitted before the Hon'ble Collective Leaders, NSCN/ GPRN, by your esteem authority for Ao National Workers. A copy enclosed herewith. A mere perusal of the aforesaid Report, it clearly shows that your esteem authority in the most arbitrary and illegal manner had already pre-judged and decided the case against the Changtongya Village even before the start of the Formal Oath Taking and Other Customary norms/process. It is humbly stated that till date, your esteem authority is yet to give any guidelines, jurisdiction for Observation after Customary Oath Taking. The unfair action and specially the adverse Report dated 25-9-2015, it clearly shows that the proposed Customary Oath Taking on 16-10-2015, appears to be simply an eye wash with an ulterior motive. It is an unfortunate situation where your esteem authority had already shown your clear intention and submitted an adverse report to the Hon/He Collective Leaders even before the formal customary process was initiated. It is humbly stated that the Changtongya Village have a high regard to the high office of the CAO, Ao Region arid also the highest respect and honour to all the Ao National Workers. It is however deeply regretted that we cannot be a party to a decision making process, where the public authority have a pre-conceived mind and as clearly shown by the Report dated 25-9-2015. It is our sincere belief that any decision making process of a high public office, it should not only be fair, transparent and just, but it should also be seen to be above suspicion and bias in front of the ordinary public at large. The Changtongya Village would like to reiterate that we are the Traditional Owner of the Milak River from Tsumok Longok to Tsuben Lama. We are not abandoning our rights at any cost. Also, our position had already been vindicated at several competent Courts/Forums over the years. In view of the above mentioned peculiar facts and circumstances, the Changtongya Village have no other option but to withdraw our Traditional Consent with heavy heart and express our inability to participate at the Traditional Oath Taking ceremony on 16-10-2015 at Milak River. Any inconvenience caused to your esteem authority is deeply regretted and for which we express our sincere apology.

Apple told to pay $234 mn for using BITS graduates’ technology wAshiNgtON, OctOber 17 (iANs): Tech giant Apple has been told to pay $234 million to the intellectual property arm of Wisconsin University, Madison, for using without permission patented technology developed by its team, including two Indian-American engineers. The award amount a federal jury in Madison asked to Apple to pay Friday was about $165 million less than what Wisconsin University Alumni Re-
search Foundation (WARF) had sought, according to Wisconsin State Journal. The case centres on technology that became a component of processors that run widely popular Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Gurindar Sohi and Terani Vijaykumar, both electrical and electronics engineering graduates of Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, were part of the four-member WARF team which developed the technology. US District Judge William Conley, who presided over the trial, complimented the lawyers on their professionalism and spoke to Wisconsin University-Madison computer sciences' Professor Sohi, who led the WARF technology team, seated in the courtroom. "For Dr. Sohi, I hope you felt that your inven-
tion was vindicated," Conley was quoted as saying. "This is a case where the hard work of our university researchers and the integrity of patenting and licensing discoveries has prevailed," said Carl Gulbrandsen, managing director of WARF. "The jury recognized the seminal computer processing work that took place on our campus. This decision is great news for the inventors, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and for WARF." Apple attorneys declined to comment, referring questions to the California company's public relations office, the Journal said. Spokesperson Rachel Tulley said only that Apple plans to appeal. The jury also ruled that a subset of processing chips produced in Texas by Samsung under contract for Apple, then
Maruti Suzuki to launch hatchback Baleno next week
cheNNAi, OctOber 16 (Pti): Country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India will launch premium hatchback Baleno next week, which will be exported to over hundred countries as a 'Made-inIndia' car. "We showcased the car in Frankfurt motor show. By October 26, we will be launching it in India not only to domestic market but also to over hundred foreign markets", Maruti Suzuki India Executive Director R S Kalsi told reporters. Maruti Suzuki introduced Baleno as a premium sedan in the domestic market years back but later
stopped its production. The company is mulling the re-entry of the brand Baleno as a premium hatchback. "It will be a Made-inIndia car and will be exported to over hundred countries like European countries and Latin American countries", Kalsi said after unveiling the 71st Nexa outlet here. Stating that the premium hatchback segment was growing at a rate of 20 per cent year-on-year, the company would sell Baleno as the second product from Nexa outlets. "Baleno will be available as our second prod-

New Delhi, OctOber 17 (AgeNcies): In what could give a big boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign, US aviation manufacturer Boeing has decided to assemble one of its two helicopters — Chinook heavy-lift and Apache attack types — in India. “We are much closer to have assembly (of ) one of those airplanes (choppers) here. That will play out and that’s our strategy… This market is too important, capability is too high and commitment is sig-
nificant and that kind of commitment is important for us,” said chairman Jim McNerney. Hoping India would call for bids for a fighter aircraft over the next couple of years, McNerney showed interest in making state-of-theart fighter planes in the country. “Our approach is going to be to take a current, state-of-theart fighter and bid. The quantities are uncertain. Our bid will include a proposal to make the plane here,” he said at a seminar organised here by Boeing. B o e i n g c u r re n t l y

Its most recent state-of-the art combat plane has been the F-22 Raptor stealth jet, which it had built in the last decade with fellow American defence major Lockheed Martin. In fact, the F/A-18 and Lockheed’s F-16 were both contenders for the Indian Air Force’s mega 126 jet Multirole Medium Range Combat Aircraft deal, with was eventually won by France’s Dassault Rafale. stems from the fact that the 126 jet deal was eventually whittled down to a 36-plane contract, not enough in the face of a crunching fighter jet shortage even as the Indian Air Force looks at retiring the ageing fleet of Soviet-era MiG 21s and MiG 27s. In September, India had signed a contract for 15 Chinook and 22 Apache helicopters. “The value to India is a very modern production system integrated to make a very sophisticated machine. That kind of industrial base capability is as important as the fighter itself. These mod-
ern manufacturing techniques can go into many different industries,” said McNerne. The chairman added ‘Make in India’ was a “very important” initiative by the Modi government and the US firm could play a key role in the initiative. “Make in India is not just someone handing you a blueprint and you make it. It can’t be that way but I think the vision of the Prime Minister is more than that. So, I would break, at least the way I see it, Make in India down to design and make in India for India and global (market).”

WARF sued Apple in January 2014, claiming that Apple infringed on one of WARF's patents in creating a processor for its popular mobile devices, starting with the iPhone 5S in 2012. On Tuesday, the jury agreed that Apple's use of the technology was an infringement of WARF's patent. The technology, first incorporated into Apple's A7 processor and used now in the A8 and A8X processors, makes the processors work faster and more efficiently, and extend battery life by as much as two hours. DCC presidents condemn action Kohima Police seize stolen vehicles of suspended Congress leaders DIMAPUR , OCTO BER 17 (MExN): The District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents of all the 11 districts have condemned the action of some “disgruntled” suspended leaders of the party. In a press release, the DCC presidents alleged that the suspended leaders had brought some paid thugs to Congress Bhavan Kohima on October 16 and attempted to lock down the office of PCC president. “For whatever arguments the suspended leaders may have to justify their actions, it has crossed all forms of decency and ex-
posed their narrow mindset which does not hold any place in a civilized society,” stated the DCC presidents. “Some of the suspended members must also remember that Kohima is not Kohima alone, but the capital of Nagaland where all tribes reside.” Reposing their faith in the leadership of K Therie as the NPCC president, they appealed to all party workers to refrain from further provocations in the greater interest of the party. They also appealed for maintenance of discipline and abiding by the directives of the party at this cru-
cial juncture. or some children with special needs, even the simplest things require carefully thought-out teaching. Dressing and hand-washing and bed-making and even getting a spoon to the mouth without disaster are all projects you may want to tackle with your child, but it's not always easy to see how to teach things that seem so simple and so obvious. Steps to Independence helps you break even these basic self-care skills into smaller
steps and lead your child backward through them so that no matter what, there's always a successful outcome. The book is full of good suggestions for a wide range of skills children will need to take care of themelves; to start right in teaching self-care skills, turn to Chapter 9 and: 1. Use the Self-Help Checklist to pinpoint skills your child needs to work on. 2. Fill out the list of three Self-Help Skills to Teach. 3. Break each of those skills into smaller steps. 4. Make up a blank Progress Chart for each

gives few interesting facts. It speculates that evolution may have led females to prefer reddish colors ,this gives them edge in many areas like selecting riper reddish fruits, to find healthy pink faces more attractive to choose as a partner. • Whether plastic takes 500 years to decompose? But plastic bags have been around only from 1957, then how we know the years it takes to decompose? Fact is polythene can be easily degraded by UV rays but plastic bages are quickly buried & they don't get UV light. Also the bacteria & fungi have harder time to digest these ,as they are yet to evolve to get used to this unnatural material. • It is said that Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Napolean, Mussolini and Hitler all suffered from ailurophobia i.e. the fear of cats. • Hitler dreamed of becoming an artist .He applied twice to the Vienna Academy of Art in 1907 and 1908 but was denied entrance. or years, I’ve always held a very simplistic view of children’s ministry. Outside of reaching the lost I believe it’s the most vital ministry in the church. Kids ministry represents our future. Without raising up the next generation there will be no Christianity. Thus, Deuteronomy 6 and David’s heart in Psalms: O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do. Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me. – Psalm 71:17-18 (NLT) Though I don’t consider myself old and gray yet, this has become one of my life verses and a challenge I gladly share with others. But, I digress, back to my simplistic view of chil-
dren’s ministry. At my core I believe two things in this order: Children’s ministry should be fun and kids should understand God loves them. For some, this is hardly a revelation, but for others this just freed you up. There’s no point in having a phenomenal lesson plan if children are not having fun or are engaged in learning. Sure there are times when we need to get serious, but children were not designed to sit in their chairs for and listen to a talking head for an hour or two. God designed children to have fun, explore and be active in learning. Make sure your lessons are engaging. Adjust what you have so there’s movement and laughter. Add fun games. If you can tweak those games to complement the lesson then that’s a bonus, but don’t sacrifice the fun games because you can’t. At the end of the day,
Leading the whole Child when a child is picked up and a parent asks, “What did you learn today?” and the child responds, “I don’t remember, BUT I had fun!” I’m happy with that. Though I’d rather the child had retained the main point(s) of the day, I’m absolutely glad he/she had fun in church. That child is making the connection that being in the house of God is fun. And, if there’s any place that we should want kids to have the best time, it’s in church. Please understand what I’m not saying. I’m not saying don’t teach biblical lessons. I’m not
saying to make a mockery or make light of Jesus. I’m saying make kids want to want to come back because they’re having fun learning about him. Maybe it’s not a question of fun or Jesus. It’s a challenge ore reminder to make learning about him fun. Let’s have fun this weekend! ish girl,” Athena said angrily, “You think you are prettier than I am! I doubt it to be true, but even if it were -- there is more to life than beauty alone. While others work and play and learn, you do little but boast and admire yourself.” Medusa tried to point out that her beauty was an inspiration to those around her and that she made their lives better by simply looking so lovely, but Athena silenced her with a frustrated wave. greek mythology“Nonsense,” Athena retorted, “Beauty fades swiftly in all mortals. It does not comfort the sick, teach the unskilled or feed the hungry. And by my powers, your loveliness shall be stripped away completely. Your fate shall serve as a reminder to others to
control their pride.” And with those words Medusa’s face changed to that of a hideous monster. Her hair twisted and thickened into horrible snakes that hissed and fought each other atop her head. “Medusa, for your pride this has been done. Your face is now so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it will turn a man to stone,” proclaimed the goddess, “Even you, Medusa, should you seek your reflection, shall turn to rock the instant you see your face.” And with that, Athena sent Medusa with her hair of snakes to live with the blind monsters -- the gorgon sisters -- at the ends of the earth, so that no innocents would be accidentally turned to stone at the sight of her.
Once Upon a Time
The Story of Medusa and Athena O
nce upon a time, a long time ago there lived a beautiful maiden named Medusa. Medusa lived in the city of Athens in a country named Greece -- and although there were many pretty girls in the city, Medusa was considered the most lovely. Unfortunately, Medusa was very proud of her beauty and thought or spoke of little else. Each day she boasted of how pretty she was and each day her boasts became more outrageous. On Sunday, Medusa bragged to the miller that her skin was more beautiful than fresh fallen snow. On Monday, she told the cobbler that her hair glowed brighter than the sun. On Tuesday, she commented to the blacksmith’s son that her eyes were greener than the Aegean Sea. On Wednesday, she boasted to everyone at the public gardens that her lips were redder than the reddest rose. When she wasn’t busy sharing her thoughts about her beauty with all who passed by, Medusa would gaze lovingly at her reflection in the mirror. She admired herself in her hand mirror for an hour each morning as she brushed
her hair. She admired herself in her darkened window for an hour each evening as she got ready for bed. She even stopped to admire herself in the well each afternoon as she drew water for her father's horses -- often forgetting to fetch the water in her distraction. On and on Medusa went about her beauty to anyone and everyone who stopped long enough to hear her -- until one day when she made her first visit to the Parthenon with her friends. The Parthenon was the largest temple to the goddess Athena in all the land. It was decorated with amazing sculptures and paintings. Everyone who entered was awed by the beauty of the place and couldn’t help but think of how grateful they were to Athena, goddess of wisdom, for inspiring them and for watching over their city of Athens. Everyone, that is, except Medusa. greek mythologyWhen Medusa saw the sculptures, she whispered that she would have made a much better subject for the sculptor than Athena had. When Medusa saw the artwork, she commented that the artist had done a fine job

considering the goddess's thick eyebrows -- but imagine how much more wonderful the painting would be if it was of someone as delicate as Medusa. And when Medusa reached the altar she sighed happily and said, “My this is a beautiful temple. It is a shame it was wasted on Athena for I am so much prettier than she is – perhaps some day people will build an even grander temple to my beauty.” Medusa’s friends grew pale. The priestesses who overheard Medusa gasped. Whispers ran through all the people in the temple who quickly began to leave -- for everyone knew that Athena enjoyed watching over the people of Athens and feared what might happen if the goddess had overheard Medusa’s rash remarks. Before long the temple was empty of everyone except Medusa, who was so busy gazing proudly at her reflection in the large bronze doors that she hadn't noticed the swift departure of everyone else. The image she was gazing at wavered and suddenly, instead of her own features, it was the face of Athena that Medusa saw reflected back at her. “Vain and fool-

There's so much for your go-gogo toddler to learn! A toddler's buzzing brain soaks up new information like a sponge, which can make it hard to sit still or go to sleep. Here are three fascinating facts about your toddler’s development that you might not know Learning to talk Children understand language much earlier than they can speak it. By age 1, they typically understand about 70 words but speak only a handful of them, says neuroscientist Lise Eliot, an associate
professor of neuroscience at Chicago Medical School and author of What's Going On in There? How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life. At about 18 months, toddlers' spoken vocabulary starts to explode. They
add new words at the astonishing rate of one every two waking hours. By age 6, they typically understand about 13,000 words (compared with your 60,000 or so), although they're not likely to speak that many. Right-handed or left-handed? Most 1-year-olds are ambidextrous (they use both hands equally). Your toddler will probably start showing a preference for the right or left hand by age 2 or 3 — and in about 90 percent of kids, it'll be the right. Why so many righties? No one knows for sure, says neuroscientist Eliot. Genetics plays a role (southpaw parents are more likely to have kids who are also lefties), as do social norms. There are
more lefties in the United States than in cultures in which left-handedness is considered unacceptable. There's also a theory that says more people are right-handed because three-quarters of babies in utero spend the last weeks of gestation with their right arm facing out, allowing it to move more freely. Another says that it's because newborns are more likely to turn their heads to the right than to the left (though the reasons for this are unclear). Yet another says it's simply a learned behavior — you hand things to your child with your right hand, and he follows suit. Brain gain Basic brain functions are already in place at birth. But the cerebral cortex — the part of the brain
that has thoughts, stores memories, and controls voluntary muscle movement — only kicks into gear after encountering the world outside the womb. Between ages 1 and 2, the cerebral cortex adds more than 2 million new synapses — the connections between brain cells — every second, according to Zero to Three, a nonprofit educational group. By age 2, toddlers have more than 100 trillion synapses, the most they'll ever have in their life. That's part of the reason they have such an incredible capacity to learn. This period of "synaptic exuberance" can last until age 8, but it's also accompanied by the constant pruning of unused synapses. By the time your child reaches adulthood, more than 50 percent of those neural pathways will be gone.

ids today are complex. They grow up faster than we imagine, and they face issues that were nonexistent — or at least more hidden — when we were children. And as children’s ministers, we often find ourselves trying to interpret what kids are really going through based on the signals they’re sending. Is Sarah struggling to make friends? Has Keisha’s father come home? Is Mark being held back in school this year? Is Vickie prepared for her family’s move? Is it possible that Peyton is being abused at home? Traversing a child’s inner world requires attention, compassion, intuition, and common sense. It’s a minefield-laden world we live in, and unfortunately, children are all too often the casualties. Part of our role as children’s ministers is to support families as they safeguard kids’ overall well-being — and there are many instances in which that well-being is threatened, ranging from abuse to self-confidence issues. How do we recognize the signs that a child is covering up a trauma, crisis, or hurt? We asked three experts for their advice. Pulitzer Prize-winning author and researcher Robert Coles, Christian clinical psychologist Dr. Gary Hackney, and Christian counselor Steve Rossi offer their insight into kids’ secret worlds. Proceed with Caution If we see kids for only one or two hours per week, is it really possible to assess whether a child is living through trauma or crisis? The answer is complex. The experts say yes — adults with limited contact with kids are often able to spot trouble through behavioral indicators and other signals kids send. But in the same instances, adults may misinterpret or miss these signs, so it’s necessary to proceed carefully. The best rule of thumb is to observe and interact with the child over a period of time — that way you can distinguish between a child who’s acting out because he didn’t get enough sleep the night before and one who’s dealing with internal trauma or stress. Use these observation tools. • Communicate — “Talk to the child,” says Coles, author of over 50 books, including The Moral Intelligence of Children (Random House). “There’s nothing like a good conversation. I wouldn’t advise getting into a lot of psychological gobbledygook…You see a child who’s ailing or hurting, you try to figure out what it’s about.” Coles also suggests checking with the parents or with other teachers and adults who know the child to gain clearer understanding. It’s also important to do a bit of self-assessment when you’re preparing to talk with a child. “Find out what it is about the child’s behavior that’s bothering you,” says Coles. “[Then] ask the child directly. Tell the child what’s on your mind in a friendly and direct way.” • Monitor — When a child’s behavior or appearance seems out of the ordinary, it’s important to monitor the change and try to assess how dramatic it is. A strong signal that a child is hurting comes in the form of an abrupt change that takes hold; for example, a child who’s normally outgoing and happy suddenly becomes withdrawn or cries inexplicably. “Any significant change in [a child’s] behavior,” says Rossi, can be a signal of something amiss. “But it’s got to be particular to that child. And every child is different,” he adds. See the Signs There are common indicators that a child is experiencing trauma of some kind. The key is to remember that what’s normal in one child may not be in another — so look for a consistent change in that particular child’s behavior. Here are signals that may indicate something is wrong. • Regression — Children (infants included) regress to earlier developmental stages when trauma occurs. Behaviors such as thumb sucking and soiling
How do you recognize the signs that a child is covering up a trauma, crisis, or hurt? clothes may reappear. • Exaggerated Fears — “Fears come back that belong to a younger age,” says Rossi. For example, it’s not age-appropriate for a 10-year-old to suddenly fear loud noises. • Anxiety — Kids have startle reactions that are exaggerated and seem out of place. For example, a child might overreact to a distant ambulance siren. • Emotional Insecurity — Clinging, crying, and difficulty separating from parents may signal that something’s amiss. Conversely, so may a reluctance to return to parents. • Withdrawal — This is more than shyness, so look for signs of children who were once social now pulling away from others. The child may “zone out,” seem distracted, or be detached. • Extreme Emotions — Children may cover up a deeper issue with irritability, belligerence, or excitability. The child may be overly aggressive or overly withdrawn. The child may cry for seemingly no reason. • Listlessness — The things that used to make the child happy no longer do. • Physical Complaints — A child frequently complains of a stomachache or headache, but there are no other signs of illness, such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. On the other hand, you may observe bruises, injuries, and other signs of physical abuse. • Verbalized Complaints — Older kids express fear, a sense of doom, nervousness, and unhappiness. • Change in Habits — The child may not sleep or eat the same as before. Also, a child may neglect his appearance and seem to be disheveled or have poor hygiene. • Acting Out in a Sexually Inappropriate Manner — Hackney gives the example of a kindergarten-age girl who insisted on rolling on top of boys in her class during nap time and trying to kiss them. The Cover-Up Kids seem to have a natural instinct to “cover up” when something is wrong — so often their behavior becomes very exaggerated or completely reverses as they try to overcompensate for their feelings. Kids hope that no one will notice for a lot of reasons — they fear the consequences of discovery, they worry about being different, they resist the unwanted attention, and the list goes on. But if you notice a child’s behavior change dramatically and consistently, your antenna should go up, says Christian clinical psychologist Hackney. Watch the child and take note of his or her behavior over a period of time. Talk to the child, talk to adults who know the child, and talk to the parents. “If [a child is] very nervous, very upset, then you get the hair twiddlers, the nail chewers, the constant pickers. There’s something going on in [the child’s] life to cause this to happen…It’s really hard when you see kids only a couple hours per week.
What you want to do is look at change. Behavior change is always motivated by something,” says Hackney. The Low-Down If you suspect or know that a child is experiencing a crisis or trauma, the experts offer these tips for assisting the child. • Talk. Don’t be afraid to talk about the problem with the child and parents if it’s been established that there is a problem. Often, “we dance around the issue.” says Rossi. “Talk about it.” • Treat it seriously. “This child is suffering,” says Rossi. “By connecting with that suffering…we’re less likely to say or do something that is going to worsen that situation. The worst thing we can do is be insensitive or do nothing.” • Take action. “Out of fear, adults will do nothing. Out of fear of litigation, people will back away from doing something that could help,” Rossi says. “Being too tough, being too rough, not responding, saying ‘you’ll get over it,’ saying ‘time will heal’ — these are the worst things we can do. Often adults don’t want to deal with it when they notice changed behavior.” • Don’t be clinical; be human. “Sometimes we’re so busy imposing our knowledge on these poor kids…,” says Coles, “that they get lost in the midst of that kind of imposition of thinking and analysis.” • Don’t label or diagnose. “Most people are not qualified to diagnose,” says Rossi. People who aren’t mental health experts simply don’t have the knowledge or expertise to diagnose a child. As children’s ministers, our role is to be alert to problems, support the child, facilitate getting the child or family help, and in cases of abuse or neglect, notify authorities according to your ministry’s protocol. • Use your head…and your heart. “Common sense is not to be dismissed. That’s a very important part of our humanity…reaching out to children mind, heart, and soul,” says Coles. • Be objective. Don’t let your emotions take over. • Get in touch with the child. “One of the things that adults do is they try to look at a child through adults’ eyes,” says Rossi. This won’t work; remember what it was like to be a child and then approach the child with those sensitivities in mind. • Don’t underestimate the child’s suffering. Hackney’s work has been primarily with victims of abuse — ranging in ages from 18 months to 87 years of age — and he says that people deal with trauma’s ramifications all their lives. He says, “Abuse or neglect may not meet legal standards, but it is still traumatic to a child.” • Don’t underestimate your ability to connect with the child. “Let us not underestimate our own possibilities and our own humanity in the form of our willingness and eagerness to be of assistance to children,” says Coles. Work in Progress Experts are optimistic about kids’ re-
siliency — especially those in a church community and those who experience the love and concern of caring adults. “Children who are churched seem to fare a whole lot better” when it comes to overcoming trauma, says Rossi. The church provides a caring community, support system, and belief system that unchurched kids typically don’t have. “If God is the healing agent — talk about resiliency, talk about power and healing,” says Rossi. Coles emphasizes the importance of making a human connection with a hurting child. “Try to draw the child out, not be analytical and point out behaviors. Be human, responsive, caring, and interested. Have a conversation, play a game, find a way to connect without creating an analytical moment. Share a glass of milk or an ice cream cone,” he says. To connect with a child, approach him or her in a calm, safety-oriented, soothing, non-threatening way. Kids needs a soft and understanding approach that helps them relax and feel safe. Talk about feelings. Adults can draw kids out by expressing their own feelings, then asking the child for his or her opinion. This allows a child to get a sense of safety about sharing his or her feelings. “The bottom line is reassurance,” says Rossi. Coles says, “We are human beings who can be hurt, also who can be healed by time and new experiences and people with whom we connect.” He’s optimistic about a child’s ability to heal, regardless of the trauma suffered, and he cautions against our adult tendency to limit children. “[We can’t] be too fatalistic and almost categorize the child as…a child who’s been hurt, [as though] he’ll never get out of that because we’ve imposed an airtight label on him.” Ultimately we serve God, and we serve children. As their supporters, friends, teachers, and caregivers, we’re often faced with difficult situations. While we can’t heal every hurt, or diagnose or prevent every problem, we can focus on serving children when they’re in need. We can be there for children as the great I AM is there for us. We can be present as God continues to be present for us. “We keep our eyes and ears open for pain and hurt,” says Coles. “Those pains and hurts are expressed by children sometimes indirectly, but we’re human beings, we know these children…It’s our responsibility and our opportunity as adults to learn from children, to respond to their cries of distress, and to let those cries of distress fall upon our eyes and ears, our hearts and our minds and souls in such a way that we reach out and say, ‘Yes, here I am.'” Counseling Basics for the Novice If you find yourself faced with a child who’s hurting — and you’re uncertain of how to proceed — use these counseling basics to connect with and support the child. • Actively listen. Stop what you’re doing and really listen to what the child is saying. This means even repeating back what the child has said to you — for instance: “What you’re saying is you feel uncomfortable when other kids tease you about your scar.” • Emphasize safety. By creating a safe environment for kids, they won’t resist confiding in you. Let them know that you’ll never judge them or make fun of them for anything they say or do. • Be empathetic. By definition, this means to vicariously experience another person’s situation. Try to put yourself in the child’s shoes and imagine what he or she is feeling — then treat the child how you would want to be treated. Don’t be in a hurry to solve the problem; sometimes the child only needs to talk. • Don’t promise to keep a secret. While confidentiality is highly important and kids need to know they can trust you, the simple fact is some secrets absolutely cannot be kept. Let the child know you’ll respect his or her wishes for secrecy as much as you’re able, but that for his or her protection, you may need to let another adult know what’s happening. • Get help. If a child’s situation requires intervention of any kind, follow your ministry’s protocol and get help. This will most likely begin with notifying your children’s ministry director or senior pastor. Is Jesus a historical figure or a fictitious character?
Introduction-- Jesus outside the Bible: Over the years there have been many criticisms leveled against the Bible concerning its historical reliability. These criticisms are usually based on a lack of evidence from outside sources to confirm the Biblical record. Since the Bible is a religious book, many scholars take the position that it is biased and cannot be trusted unless we have corroborating evidence from extra-Biblical sources. In other words, the Bible is guilty until proven innocent, and a lack of outside evidence places the Biblical account in doubt. Reliability of the New Testament: The gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and the other 23 books that form the New Testament, provide more information about Jesus than any other sources available. There are about 5,366 manuscripts of the Greek New Testament in existence today, in whole or in part, that serve to corroborate the accuracy of the New Testament. In fact, the New Testament enjoys far more historical documentation than any other volume ever known. There are only 643 copies of Homer’s Iliad, which is undeniably the most famous book of ancient Greece. No one doubts the text of Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars, but we have only 10 copies of it, the earliest of which was made 1,000 years after it was written. To have such abundance of copies for the New Testament from within 70 years of their writing is nothing short of amazing. Calling Jesus a myth is ignorance: The world-famous medical doctor and lifelong critic of Christianity, Albert Schweitzer, wrote: “The Jesus of Nazareth who came forward publicly as the Messiah, who preached the ethic of the Kingdom of God, who founded the Kingdom of Heaven upon earth, and died to give His work its final consecration, never had any existence. He is a figure designed by rationalism, endowed with life by liberalism, and clothed by modern theology in an historical garb.” In more modern times, former-preacher-turnedatheist Dan Barker has suggested that “the New Testament Jesus is a myth.” Records of hostile writers: Interestingly, the records of Jesus outside the Bible come from hostile sources--
writers who mentioned Jesus in a negative light or derogatory fashion. Such penmen certainly were not predisposed to further the cause of Christ or otherwise to add credence to his existence. In fact, quite the opposite is true. They rejected his teachings and often reviled him as well. But in all their writings they never mentioned Jesus as a fiction character. Jesus did walk on this earth! Tacitus, the Roman historian: Tacitus (circa A.D. 56-117) should be among the first of several hostile witnesses. His famous work, Annals, was a history of Rome written in approximately A.D. 115. In the Annals he told of the Great Fire of Rome, which occurred in A.D. 64. Nero, the Roman emperor in office at the time, was suspected by many of having ordered the city set on fire. The fire raged for several days and a large part of Rome was destroyed. Nero blamed the Christians for burning the city. From that moment onward the Romans’ persecution of Christians started and lasted for 250 years. Nero considered himself a talented musician and a great singer. It is said that Nero was singing in his palace while Rome was burning. Tacitus wrote: “Nero fabricated scapegoats-- and punished with every refinement the notoriously depraved Christians (as they were popularly called). Their originator, Christ, had been executed in Tiberius’ reign by the governor of Judea, Pontius Pilatus. But in spite of this temporary setback the deadly superstition had broken out afresh, not only in Judea (where the mischief had started) but even in Rome.” Tacitus hated both Christians and their namesake, Christ. He therefore had nothing positive to say about what he referred to as a “deadly superstition.” He did, however, have something to say about it. His testimony establishes beyond any reasonable doubt that the Christian religion not only was relevant historically, but that Christ, as its originator, was a verifiable historical figure of such prominence that he even attracted the attention of the Roman emperor himself. Suetonius: Additional hostile testimony originated from Suetonius, who wrote around A.D. 120. Robert Graves, as translator of Suetonius’ work, The Twelve Caesars, declared: Sueto-
Selie Visa nius was fortunate in having ready access to the Imperial and Senatorial archives and to a great body of contemporary memoirs and public documents, and in having himself lived nearly thirty years under the Caesars. Much of his information about Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero comes from eye-witnesses of the events described. The testimony of Suetonius is a reliable piece of historical evidence. Twice in his history, Suetonius specifically mentioned Christ or His followers. He wrote, for example: “Because the Jews at Rome caused continuous disturbance at the instigation of Chrestus, he (Claudius) expelled them from the city” (Chrestus is a misspelling of Christos, “the Greek word that translates the Hebrew ‘Messiah’). Suetonius further commented: “Punishments were also inflicted on the Christians, a sect professing a new and mischievous religious belief.” Again, it is evident that Suetonius and the Roman government had feelings of hatred toward Christ and his alleged mischievous band of rebels. It is equally evident that Suetonius (and most of Rome) recognized that Christ was the noteworthy founder of a historically significant new religion. Pliny the Younger: Along with Tacitus and Suetonius, Pliny the Younger must be allowed to take a seat
among hostile Roman witnesses. Pliny was sent by the Roman emperor Trajan to govern the affairs of the region of Bithynia. From this region, Pliny corresponded with the emperor concerning a problem he viewed as quite serious. He wrote: “I was never present at any trial of Christians; therefore I do not know the customary penalties or investigations and what limits are observed”. He then went on to state: “This is the course that I have adopted in the case of those brought before me as Christians. I ask them if they are Christians. If they admit it, I repeat the question a second and a third time, threatening capital punishment; if they persist, I sentence them to death. It is undeniably the case that Christians, with Christ as their founder, had multiplied in such a way as to draw the attention of the emperor and his magistrates by the time of Pliny’s letter to Trajan. It is impossible to deny the fact that Jesus Christ existed and was recognized by the highest officials within the Roman government as an actual, historical person. The testimony of hostile Jews: If a person as influential as Jesus had existed in the land of Palestine during the first century, surely the rabbis would have had something to say about him. Undoubtedly, a man who confronted the most astute religious leaders of his day-- and won-- would be named among the opinions of those who shared His rabbinical title. According to the earlier Rabbis whose opinions are recorded in these writings, Jesus of Nazareth was a transgressor in Israel, who practiced magic, scorned the words of the wise, led the people astray, and said that he had not come to destroy the law but to add to it. He was hanged on Passover Eve for heresy and misleading the people. His disciples, of whom five are named, healed the sick in his name. First-century Judaism, in large part, refused to accept Jesus Christ as the Son of the God. Yet it did not refuse to accept Him as a historical man from a literal city known as Nazareth or to record for posterity crucial facts about His life and death. Josephus, the Jewish historian: Josephus is another important Jewish
witness. Perhaps the most remarkable reference to Jesus outside the Bible can be found in the writings of Josephus. His education in biblical law and history stood among the best of his day. When Jerusalem rebelled against the Roman authorities, he was given command of the Jewish forces in Galilee. After losing most of his men, he surrendered to the Romans. After the fall of Jerusalem, Josephus settled down to live a life as a government pensioner. It was during these latter years that he wrote “Antiquities of the Jews.” From the pen of Josephus: “And there arose about this time Jesus, a wise man, if indeed we should call him a man; for he was a doer of marvelous deeds, a teacher of men who receive the truth with pleasure. He led away many Jews, and also Greeks. This man was the Christ. And when Pilate had condemned him to the cross on his impeachment by the chief men among us, those who had loved him at first did not cease; for he appeared to them on the third day alive again, the divine prophets having spoken these and thousands of other wonderful things about him: and even now the tribe of Christians, so named after him, has not yet died out.” In conclusion: This small selection of ancient nonChristian sources helps corroborate our knowledge of Jesus from the gospels. No one has the right to be an agnostic till he has thus dealt with the question of whether or not Jesus is a historical figure, and faced this fact with an open mind. If we maintain that the life of our Lord is not a historical event, we are landed in hopeless difficulties; we shall have to give up all ancient history. Faced with such overwhelming evidence, it is unwise to reject the position that Jesus Christ actually walked the streets of Jerusalem in the first century. He taught love and the Kingdom of Heaven. He cast out demons in people. He raised people from the dead. He healed the lames to walk, the blinds to see and cured people of various ailments. He was tried in a mock trial, humiliated, tortured, sentenced to a gruesome Roman crucifixion and buried in a tomb. He paid in full the penalty of our sins. But he rose from the dead on the third day, ascended to heaven after forty days and is seated at the right hand of God-- a position of power, honour and authority.

Modi govt is threatening democracy by imposing its ideology: Sonia Gandhi Buxar, OctOBer 17 (PtI): Accusing Narendra Modi government of trying to impose its ideology on the people, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today said communal frenzy is being created, innocents are killed on rumours and intellectuals are targeted under its rule that is threatening the democratic and social fabric of the country. Addressing an election rally here, she took on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his repeated attack on the nearly six-decade-long Congress rule, retorting that her party had zealously strengthened democracy which allowed Modi to become the Prime Minister. “BJP government is moving away from democratic ideals. It is creating a serious threat for our democracy by imposing its ideology on the people. Communal tension is being created. “Innocents are being

shameful,” she said in a reference to the Dadri lynching incident and the targeting of intellectuals. Gandhi also hit out at Modi for “failing” to fulfill the promises made by him to the public, especially
with regard to farmers, women and youth. She also attacked the PM over rising prices of essential commodities including vegetables and pulses that had made the life of common people
difficult. Gandhi said Modi had repeatedly said that “what has Congress done in last 60 years, that Congress has not done anything. “I want to tell you all this especially to the youth that
there was a time that due to colonial rule, there was nothing left in the country. In the last sixty years, the Congress party has ushered revolutionary changes in education, health, agriculture, industry as well as nuclear and other areas. “It protected the unity, integrity and the legacy of the country. The party took the country on the path of progress and protected the social fabric for which it sacrificed its leaders. “We made the democracy strong because of which Modi today could become the Prime Minister. Has all this been done in last one-and-a half years. If you cannot see the progress brought by the Congress, then whose fault is it. It is yours.” The five-phased Bihar assembly poll is underway and polling for the third phase of election for 50 seats will be held on October 28.

raMaNagara, OctOBer 17 (PtI): Senior BJP leader and former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa today courted controversy when he asked a woman journalist what can the opposition members do if "someone drags and rapes" her. Responding to a woman journalist's question if opposition BJP has failed in its duty by not making government accountable for such crimes, Eshwarappa, Leader of Opposition in the state Legislative Council, said "You are a woman, you are here now, if someone drags you and rapes
you, we opposition people will be somewhere else. What can we do?" "You tell me what we need to do, we will do it;...we have criticised it in the Legislature, when a six-year-old girl was raped I used all sorts of language that I had to, you people objected to my language...," he said. The state has witnessed alleged incidents of gangrape in Bengaluru, Mandya and Tumakuru in the last couple of weeks. A 20-yearold woman from Mysuru was allegedly gangraped by four men, including her friend, near Pandavapura taluk in Mandya on October 9.
Villagers in Himachal Pradesh have killed a Muslim man for allegedly smuggling cattle, police said on Saturday, in violence critics say is fuelled by the Hindu nationalist government seeking a nationwide ban of cow slaughter and beef trade. India is the world's largest exporter of beef and its fifth biggest consumer, but cow slaughter is forbidden in some regions, including the state of Himachal Pradesh, as many Hindus regard the animal as sacred. A group of local villag-

Noman was beaten to death, while the other four men, who survived the attack, were charged with animal smuggling and cow slaughter, the official said. 'Language controversy may communally polarise Goa'
PaNajI, OctOBer 17 (IaNS): A brewing controversy over instruction of medium in schools, where factions backed by Goa's Roman Catholic Church and the RSS are at loggerheads, could polarise Hindu and Catholic communities, Padma Shri awardee Maria Couto has warned. Expressing fear that the prevailing air of intolerance could do an "irreparable damage" to Goa's secular fabric, the 2010 Padma awardee in a statement, said: "I pray they do not get derailed into convert-
ing their stated position on MOI (medium of instruction) into an ugly polarisation between Goa's two major communities." "Intolerance which is vitiating the air nationally will do irreparable damage to Goa's legendary secular ethos," the noted writer and academic said. Two groups, Forum for Rights of Children to Education (FORCE) backed by the influential Roman Catholic Church, and the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) supported by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh (RSS) are currenly at loggerheads in Goa over the choice of language of instruction in junior schools. While the former group backs English, the RSS-led faction is advocating for indigenous languages. The BJP, which won the 2012 state assembly elections, thanks to a strategic alliance with leaders of the Catholic community - is now caught between promises the party made to the minority community and the BBSM over the issue of medium of instruction. According to the 2011
census, 25 percent of the 1.5 million population is Christian, while 66 percent are Hindus. The Christian population is "almost entirely Catholic" and Goan Catholics form a significant ethnoreligious group. After coming to power, the Manohar Parrikar-led Bharatiya Janata Party government via an ad hoc decision in 2012, had decided to give grants to only minority institutions which were using English as a medium of instruction, with new schools being denied the privilege. The RSS-backed BBSM
believes that the Parrikar in his pursuit of political pragmatism, let them down. Couto fears the prevailing atmosphere of intolerance over sensitive issues like beef ban and murder of rationalists and writers, could infiltrate Goa's congenial social space. "Debate and dissent by all means but do not vilify an entire community and its leaders. The communal virus if allowed to infiltrate the Goan psyche will not leave a Goa we wish our children to inherit," Couto said in the statement.
BJP, Cong at loggerheads over NJAC issue Toddler, 5-year-old gang raped in New DelhI, OctOBer 17 (PtI): Sharp differences were visible between BJP and Congress over the striking down of NJAC Act by Supreme Court, hinting at an uphill task for the government in case it wants to bring a new version of the legislation after the opposition party stressed on the "primacy of judiciary". As Congress appeared to be siding with the judiciary, the ruling BJP accused it of playing "petty politics" and taking a U-turn in the wake of the Dadri lynching incident. The NDA government suffered a huge setback yesterday as Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act, which gives a major role to the executive in the appointment of judges to higher judiciary. Commenting on the matter, senior Congress spokesman Anand Sharma said, "With the Executive having more voice, the dominant voice in the selection of judges and the primacy of the judiciary and Chief Justice of India is undermined. "That should never be allowed to happen as the Constitution is supreme, not the Executive," said.
Congress to Centre: Won’t support adventurism on NJAC New DelhI, OctOBer 17 (PtI): Congress on Saturday ruled out supporting any “adventurism” by the government on the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) issue, saying there was a great “trust deficit” under the Modi dispensation and its actions have led to a perception that it was trying to subvert institutions, including judiciary. “At the moment, you have to forget the past and look ahead....There is a great trust deficit as far as government is concerned... feeling that government wants to impose its will including on judiciary,” party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters. “We will not support adventurism of the government per se,” he said when asked whether the party would back any government move in the wake of the Constitution Bench verdict scrapping the Act for setting up a National Judicial Appointments Commission to appoint judges to the higher judiciary. “Please remove clearly perception and understanding of the people from your actions that you are trying to subvert institutions,” Singhvi said. Noting that there was much to improve, he said that the Congress would look forward to reform of the Collegium system at the November three hearing by the Supreme Court in the matter. The former Union Minister said, in an apparent reference to the Dadri lynching, that what has been happening in India has "raised concerns nationally and globally about the future of our parliamentary democracy and Constitution, particularly of free and full enjoyment of constitutional guarantees and fundamental rights". "It is important that the primacy of judiciary is there," he said.,BJP spokesman
Sambit Patra, however, was quick to attack Congress as he reminded that the party had supported the NJAC Bill along with all other parties in Parliament. "As far as Congress is concerned, they are habitual hypocrites. It is astonishing that they are bringing the matter of the Sahitya Kala Academy award winners into the NJAC issue. It is absolutely appalling and shows the mental bankruptcy of Congress," he said.
riots. Opponents have accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of looking to create religious tension in order to polarise voters in a crucial and tight election that began in the northern state of Bihar earlier this month.
NatioN Briefs 15 of marriage party killed in Andhra accident
hyDeraBaD, OctOBer 17 (IaNS): At least 15 people were killed and 15 injured when a mini truck carrying a marriage party collided head-on with a bus in Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district on Saturday, police said. The accident occurred around 6.30 a.m. near Y. Charolapalem village of Valetivaripalem mandal in Prakasam district of south coastal Andhra, 360 km from here. The mini truck, which was on its way from Kandukuru to Malakonda, rammed into the private bus coming from opposite direction. There were no passengers in the private bus, which caught fire due to the collision. Such was the impact of the collision that both vehicles fell off the road. Police said both the vehicles were apparently moving at a very high speed. While 14 people died on the spot, one succumbed at Kandukuru Hospital. The dead include three children and five women. The condition of eight of the injured is stated to be critical. Transport Minister S. Raghava Rao, who rushed to the accident side, announced a compensation of Rs.2 lakh each to the families of those killed. He said the government would bear entire expenses for the treatment of the injured. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the tragic incident. He directed the transport minister to ensure that best medical treatment is provided to the injured.
Ex-IFS officer linked to Vyapam tests found dead
BhuBaNeSwar, OctOBer 17 (IaNS): A retired Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, who also acted as an observer in two Vyapam recruitment tests of Madhya Pradesh, was found dead on a railway track in Odisha, police said on Saturday. Vijay Bahadur's body was found on a railway track near Belpahar station under South-Eastern railways' Jharsuguda junction on Thursday (October 15), police said. He was travelling to Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh from Puri in Odisha with his wife Nita Singh by the Puri-Jodhpur Express. Superintendent Railway Police (Rourkela) Karam Sey Kawar told IANS over phone that prima facie it appears that Bahadur accidentally fell off the running train and died. The official, however, said the actual cause of death would be ascertained after the post mortem report was available with the Government Railway Police. Police sources said Nita Singh reported about her husband going missing to the ticket checker (TTE) of the train after reaching Raigarh station. Bahadur's death is the first incident after the Supreme Court in July handed over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is inquiring into the Vyavsayik Pariksha Mandal (Vyapam), or the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) scam and cases related to the mysterious deaths of over 40 accused or witnesses. The CBI has so far registered over 80 first information reports and launched over 10 preliminary inquiries into the Vyapam scam.

Delhi, Kejriwal questions PM, LG
New DelhI, OctO Ber 17 (IaNS): A toddler and a five-year-old girl were gang-raped here in separate incidents, leading to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who visited the victims in hospital on Saturday, questioning the measures taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to protect women in the capital and demanding control over Delhi Police. The two-and-a-halfyear-old, who was raped by two men in west Delhi's Nangloi area, continued to be in a critical condition on Saturday while the five-yearold was raped by three men in east Delhi's Anand Vihar. Questioning steps taken by Modi and Jung, who are responsible for law and order in the capital, to protect children, Kejriwal later tweeted: "Repeated rape of minors is shameful and worrying. Delhi Police has completely failed to provide safety. What are PM and his LG doing?" According to a police officer in Nangloi, the twoand-a-half-year-old was kidnapped from outside her home, where she was after a power cut, by two men and brutally raped.
She was found bleeding at a nearby park early on Saturday. The victim was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where she is undergoing treatment for her injuries. Police have launched a manhunt for the accused, who are yet to be identified. In the other case, police in east Delhi have arrested three men allegedly involved in the gang rape of the five-year-old and booked them under various charges dealing with gang rape, kidnapping and provisions of POCSO Act. After visiting the victims with Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain, Kejriwal said the PM and Jung should hold a meeting over the issue. "PM sir, give control of Delhi Police to Delhi government for one year. If situation does not improve, take it back," he later tweeted. Former chief minister Sheila Dikshit said it was "wrong to blame the prime minister" who is not concerned with the administration of Delhi, but suggested policing in the city should be split into security and general law and order and the city government should be put in charge of the latter.

China will never recklessly resort to use of force in South China Sea
Israel thwarts further knife attacks, 3 Palestinians dead
beiJiNG, october 17 (reUterS): China will never "recklessly" resort to the use of force in the South China Sea, a senior Chinese general said on Saturday, amid tensions over Beijing's building of islands in the disputed waters. China's relations with several Southeast Asian countries, especially the Philippines and Vietnam who have competing claims in the South China Sea, have been strained over Beijing's increasingly assertive tone on territorial claims in an area through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes annually. Beijing's move last year to step up the creation of artificial islands, which it says are mostly for civilian purposes, has drawn strong criticism from Washington. Fan Changlong, one of the vice chairmen of the Central Military Commission which controls the Chinese armed forces and is headed by President Xi Jinping, told a high-level security forum that China had sought to avoid conflict. "We will never recklessly resort to the use of force, even on issues of sovereignty, and have done our
utmost to avoid unexpected conflicts," Fan told the forum, attended by Southeast Asian defence ministers. Fan reiterated that China's islands "will not affect freedom of navigation in the South China Sea" and said recently completed lighthouses on Cuarteron Reef and Johnson South Reef in the Spratly archipelago "have already begun to provide navigation services to all nations". "We will continue to resolve disputes and differences with directly related parties through friendly consultation and are committed to working with relevant parties to maintain regional security and stability," Fan said. The United States says international law prohibits claiming territory around artificial islands built on previously submerged reefs and that the U.S. military would sail or fly wherever international law allowed. Beijing, however, denies it has militarised the South China Sea and has warned that it would not stand for violations of its territorial waters in the name of freedom of navigation. Malaria protein could help treat cancer
‘Africa's poor grow by 100 million since 1990’
New york, october 17 (iANS): The mosquitoborne parasite that causes malaria also produces a protein that could help stop cancer, new research has found. The researchers found that the malarial protein binds to a sugar molecule found in many types of cancer. The sugar molecule -oncofetal chondroitin sulfate -- could be a target for anti-cancer drugs, and that the malarial protein, called VAR2CSA, could provide the tool for carrying such drugs to tumours, the scientists found. "Based on our clinical data, we helped validate that this could be applied to melanoma and lung cancers," said one of the authors of the study Nhan Tran, associate professor at Translational Genomics Research Institute (Tgen) in Arizona, US. "This specific type of developmental protein -- oncofetal chondroitin sulfate -- is expressed in the placenta, and is also expressed in lung cancer and in melanoma," Tran said. Malaria uses VAR2CSA to embed itself in the placenta -- hiding itself from the immune system -- by binding to oncofetal chondroitin sulfate.
JoHANNeSbUrG, october 17 (reUterS): The number of Africans trapped in poverty has surged by around 100 million over the past quarter century, the World Bank said on Friday, despite years of economic growth and multi-million dollar aid programmes. The report's figures, described as "staggering" by the bank's Africa head Makhtar Diop, showed widespread malnutrition, and rising violence against civilians, particularly in central regions and the Horn of Africa. "It is projected that the world's extreme poor will be increasingly concen-
mer U.S. chief of naval operations, told the forum the scale of the building of ports and airfields in the seas by China raised legitimate concerns. "I do not see an influx of tourists clamouring to visit these remote outposts," he said. Some analysts in Washington believe the United States has already decided to conduct freedom-ofnavigation operations inside the 12-nautical-mile limits that China claims around islands built on reefs in the Spratly islands. Malaysian Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, also attending the forum, said the United States had briefed Malaysia on these plans, but that he feared getting caught up between two superpowers. "My concern is unintended, accidental, unintentional incidents on the high seas, especially between two major powers that at the end of the day will end up affecting smaller nations like Malaysia," he told reporters. China has overlapping claims with Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei in the South China Sea.
trated in Africa," Diop added in a foreword. A surge in population meant the proportion of Africans in poverty had actually fallen since 1990, but the actual numbers were up. In a major study of households taking stock of African economies and societies after two decades of relatively strong growth, the Bank said 388 million - 43 percent of the sub-Saharan region's 900 million people - lived on less than $1.90 a day. In 1990, at the start of the study period, the ratio was 56 percent, or 284 million. The findings present a mixed bag for countries that, on average, enjoyed
JerUSALeM, october 17 (reUterS): Three Palestinians were shot dead on Saturday in what Israel said were thwarted knife attacks, but a Palestinian witness of one incident said it was a result of Jewish settler violence, as tensions ran high after more than two weeks of unrest. At least 40 Palestinians and seven Israelis have died in the violence, which was in part triggered by Palestinians' anger over what they see as increased Jewish encroachment on Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound. Israeli border police had stopped to question a 16-year-old Palestinian walking in "a suspicious manner" through a neighborhood around East Jerusalem, a police spokesman said. The teenager drew a knife and tried to stab the officers, who shot him dead, the spokesman said. A second shooting occurred near a Jewish settlement in the West Bank city of Hebron. The Israeli mili-

A child born in Africa now is likely to live more than six years longer than one born in 1995, the study found, while adult literacy rates over the same period have risen 4 percentage points. Mexico drug lord Guzman hurt while eluding capture Mexico city, october 17 (AFP): Fugitive drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman eluded an operation to recapture him in northwestern Mexico in recent days, injuring his leg and face, authorities said, as the manhunt heats up. Authorities said Friday that efforts to nab Guzman, who embarrassed President Enrique Pena Nieto with his brazen July jailbreak, have focused on the northwest region in the past few weeks after foreign governments shared intelligence. "Due to these actions and to avoid his arrest, the fugitive escaped in a hurry (in recent days), which according to the information that was collected, caused him injuries to his leg and face," the government said in a statement. "It is important to specify that these injuries were not the product of a direct clash," it said, without specifying the extent of the injuries or how authorities know he was hurt. Authorities also did not say exactly where and when the operation took place, but raids have reportedly occurred in the neighboring states of Durango and Sinaloa. The government said it was continuing operations to capture the Sinaloa drug cartel boss, who has been captured and escaped prison twice, most recently on July 11 by crawling down a hole in his cell's shower that led to a huge tunnel. The governor of Sinaloa said Wednesday that special forces had conducted raids in Tamazula, Durango. US Drug Enforcement Administration officials have told AFP
edge of the operation, NBC said the marines raided the ranch in helicopters, but turned back after taking fire from Guzman's gunmen. The marines later went in on foot and found cellphones, medication and two-way radios. Guzman and his henchmen are believed to have fled in all-terrain vehicles, the network said. But a week after the raid, officials are "losing hope" that the infamous drug lord will be caught imminently, it reported.
that they believe Guzman fled to the rugged mountain region of his home state stronghold of Sinaloa following his jailbreak. The states of Durango, Sinaloa and Chihuahua meet in a drug-producing region known as the Gold Triangle, a bastion of Guzman's drug cartel. US law enforcement officials say Guzman, 58, likely fled there because he enjoys the support of the local population. American authorities have been working with Mexican security forces in the hope of extraditing him to the United States. Ranch Raid US network NBC News reported that Mexican marines closed in on Guzman last week after US drug agents intercepted cellphone signals suggesting he was hiding at a ranch near Cosala, Sinaloa state, in the Sierra Madre mountains. US extradition bid Guzman fled the Altiplano maximum-security prison near Mexico City just 17 months after US-backed marines captured him in the Sinaloa Pacific resort of Mazatlan following a 13-year manhunt. He escaped through a 1.5-kilometer (one mile) tunnel with a redesigned motorcycle on special tracks, emerging in a house outside the prison. A new video of his escape was leaked to the Televisa channel this week, showing that loud hammering could be heard in his cell moments before he descended down the hole. It took guards nearly 40 minutes to go inside his cell after he escaped. More than a dozen prison officials have been detained over charges they helped him flee. Pena Nieto had refused to hand Guzman over to the United States, but authorities have now secured an arrest warrant to extradite him if he is captured again. Guzman was first arrested in 1993 in Guatemala, but he escaped from a prison in western Mexico in 2001 by hiding in a laundry cart.

lence in Africa is twice as high as other developing regions - and noted that the rates of improvement were levelling off. "Despite the increase in school enrolment, today more than two out of five adults are unable to read or write," the report said. "Nearly two in five children are malnourished and one in eight women is underweight," it continued. "At the other end of the spectrum, obesity is emerging as a new health concern." Perhaps most disturbingly, the study presented more evidence of the 'resource curse' that afflicts states endowed with plentiful reserves of hydrocarbons or minerals, often the source of internal or external conflict, or corruption and government ineptitude. Citizens of resourcerich countries tended to be less literate, live 4.5 years less and have higher rates of malnutrition among women and children than other African states, the study found. Although the number of full-scale wars afflicting the continent is down, the report also noted that outbreaks of violence against civilians were on the rise, especially in central Africa and the Horn of Africa.
ing the girl's father who spoke with Reuters. Also in Hebron, a female Palestinian stabbed an Israeli border policewoman, cutting her hand, a police spokesman said. The policewoman managed to shoot the attacker, he said. More than 40 Palestin-
ians have been killed in the last two weeks, including knife-wielding assailants and protesters shot by Israeli forces during rockthrowing confrontations. Seven Israelis have died in random attacks in the street or on buses. Israel says it is keeping the status quo at the holy
compound, which is also revered by Jews as the location of two destroyed biblical Jewish temples. Peace talks collapsed in 2014 over Israeli settlement-building in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, areas Palestinians seek for a state, and after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas angered Israel by reaching a unity deal with the Islamist group Hamas in Gaza. The last major confrontation was the Gaza conflict between Israel and Hamas in 2014, which left large sections of Gaza destroyed. Around 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, and 73 Israelis, almost all soldiers, were killed. The United States has stepped up efforts to try to restore calm to the region. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke by phone with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas to discuss ways to end the violence. Kerry and Netanyahu will meet next week in Germany.

"It is with great sadness that Everton Football Club has learned of the passing of Howard Kendall," Everton said in a statement on their website (www.evertonfc.com). "The most successful manager in the history of the Club and one of the greatest players to pull on the Everton jersey. Wilfried Tsonga downs Rafa Nadal to reach Shanghai final
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (R) of France is congratulated by Rafael Nadal of Spain after Tsonga beat Nadal in their men's singles semi-final match at the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament in Shanghai, China, October 17. (REUTERS)
sHANGHAI, OctOber 17 (reuters): Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga recorded a first win over Rafa Nadal in almost four years after producing some scintillating tennis to beat the Spaniard in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday. Tsonga, the 16th seed, triumphed 6-4 0-6 7-5 to set up a final against either world number one Novak Djokovic or Briton Andy Murray, who play in the second semi-final later on Saturday. The Frenchman fired down 11 aces to record his first win over Nadal since the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals and give a major boost to his flagging hopes of qualifying again for the end of season championships in London. Nadal, a winner of 14 grand slam singles titles, struggled to cope with Tsonga in the opening set as the Frenchman pressured the Spaniard's serve with some heavy hitting. He secured the break in the fifth game at the third time of asking but after going on to serve out the set, Tsonga's game crumbled in the second set as Nadal easily levelled without dropping a game to force a decider. Nadal, looking for a first hard court title in almost two years, was forced to save some early break points but the third set remained on serve until Tsonga struck in the 11th game of an enthralling encounter. The 30-year-old Frenchman produced an eye-catching dive to force match point, which he converted to reach his first Masters final since he triumphed in Toronto last year.
THE MORUNG EXPRESS
Government of India and Gaidinliu
W
hy did the Congress Government of India yesterday and the BJP Government of India today like to honor an illiterate old village woman Gaidinliu so much; in less luck she would have even been lynched by irate Villagers for her abhorrent Sorcery. In her wildest dream, she would have never found her in such high position of her today. Unknown to her, she was used a Frankenstein by the Power that be. She is not to be blamed for that; her Handlers are. After 'Tamrapatra' Honor was offered her, some Reporters from outside came in search of her; a highly placed Naga Officer accompanied the Reporters and asked for what was the honor given her. She replied innocently: "Ki jane, dishe, loishe" and that was the end of all informed conversation the Reporters had with her. It is understandable many in her Community feel proud one of their members today have got such high prominence in high Government of India circles. The other Naga has no complaint for that. Most happy-go-luckyNaga in Nagaland go about their daily processes of life without even a sidelong glance at the Issue but it portents serious implications for the Naga people. It is not for nothing that the Government of India is propping up so high such an ignoramus in Nagaland. The attitude of the Naga towards Gaidinliu is worryingly uneasy; a few concerned questions are: Why is the great Government at Delhi today so much interested in an ignominious Naga woman? Lately, she is made a great Freedom Fighter of India for the whole North East?! OK, very good; let them honor her at Bhopal, Maharastra or at Delhi; why in Nagaland? Again I say: It is not for nothing. What has she done for Nagaland? Many a Naga worked for India and have given their lives even in Nagaland. But the India Government has never given even a fraction of the recognitions given to Gaidinliu. She did not inspire any of the State. Nakedly, perhaps even vulgarly but honestly: Gaidinliu is looked in disdain in Nagaland today because of her Handlers. The Originator of the Gaidinliu imbroglio in Nagaland, the former CM of Nagaland, like a true Naga, has honestly and openly and perhaps even a bit incredulously stated he has projected the Gaidinliu Memorial cum Library at Kohima commonly like any other normal developmental works of the State. While what the Chief Minister had said must be true, because it rings true; he has unintentionally and naively landed his Naga people in great concern and worry at heart. The Naga in Nagaland deeply resents the Project: the BJP Government at Delhi seems bent on doing what the Naga resents. Will the present Chief Minister stand his Ground? What is India's Agenda for the glo-
rification of a Non-existent Glory of Gaidinliu? Contemporary living Naga knows much more about Gaidinliu than Hindus in India, but today Hindus teach Gaidinliu to the Naga. What a make believe? One from Assam even described Gaidinliu how she in 1921, traveled with Mahatma Gandhi in the Train from Manipur Road to Golaght when she must have been only 6 years old, if she were born in 1915 as the papers claim! Many Naga today accept education of their children in India, appointment of them to preferred Services in India, look up to India for employment and the financing of the State, but do not take the Gaidinliu implications on the desire to preserve the Naga Character of the State. People in Nagaland today do not seem to understand the Indian Hindu Soul of the Government today. Take the Case of Politics: India opened Ceasefire with NSCN and others of the many Naga nationalist Groups, but it initially said it will talk only with the NSCN IM. Then it said the Talk is 'All inclusive' but before the summer is over, the Government has stopped Talking with the K. Group. On the other hand, the smart Interlocutor contacted Individuals, Organizations, Political or Non-Political, and the Prime Minister of India is said to have openly told the zealous Nagaland Chief Minister at Delhi that every Naga Public should give their Proposals for the settlement of the Indo-Naga political Issue! On Gaidinliu; what the Naga understands or do not understand, and what the Government of India intends, appear quite different. To the Naga, Gaidinliu was a notorious Demon possessed, Human sacrificing, blood sucking Sorcerer, jailed by the efficient, orderly, discerning Colonial administration of Naga Hills, for disturbing some medieval normally subservient and peaceful superstitious Community, with her Sorcery. The British colonial Administration never favored American Christian Culture replace the native simple, honest Culture in the Naga Hills. The Sarkar prevented the Naga from having Foreign Name in the School Register, and it eschewed the Naga wearing Half Pant. The administration encouraged native Culture in Naga Hills. Gaidinliu was destined for release from Jail when Gandhian Freedom Fighters of India were being released on the eve of Indian Independence. The colonial Government was still in existence in Naga Hills then and they, out of concern for Law and Order in the peaceful Hills, stowed away the social trouble Maker in remote inaccessible Tuensang Village of Yimrepe, where Gaidinliu was Baptized into the Southern American Baptist Faith of Christianity by no other than American Baptist Award winning Rev. Kichungluba Ao. The Naga National Council, then in Gandhian pattern of Non-Violence,
kindled Naga political Spark and Gopinath Bordoloi, the Premier of the Province of Assam was sore with Naga Hills for refusing to be part of the Province of Assam. Mr. Imtialiaba Ao, an NNC Secretary, accompanied the Sub-Committee to the Constituent Assembly of India in its tour of the Province of Assam and expressed strong dissent to the Sub-Committee's Recommendations and stood for the NNC's opposition to be "part of the Indian Union". What the Naga desired and what the Indian Governments action are, were often at opposite ends. The Indian Government preferred to keep the Naga as manageable buffer subjects between India and its little known formidable neighbors like Burma, Pakistan and China: the Naga aspired for a pure indigenous freedom. This divergence of likes and dislikes are still a Reality alive today. India initially, after its Independence, began to rely on its Armed Assam Police to deal with the Naga Hills', in Gandhian political movements. The inexperienced Armed Assam Police could not deal the Naga Problem: Nehru began to get impatient with Premier of Assam and employed its Army on the Naga. The Naga Leader Phizo has vanished from the Naga Hills; not even most of his people, nor the Intelligent Services –Army, Police, and indigenous locals- got any News of Phizo's presence in Naga Hills for quite some time. Interested Authorities in the Naga Hills began to believe Phizo has vanished or had even passed away and began to spread such News. The Indian Army was gaining increasingly confident they were about to "finish the Armed Naga Hostiles". Most NNC Cadres were either captured, killed or surrendered, in what the Army called "PACIFIED". Out of the thousands and thousands that joined the Naga Movement decades ago, only 69, Six-Nine only!, remained in 1960, mostly in the Angami and Chakhesang Communities. The Naga was in danger of being exterminated of its political Aspirations. However, the core Naga Soul in the Church, in the Public, in the Politics, in the common Villagers, and in the concerned Elderly, came together and agreed to arrange a Naga Hills Tuensang Area NHTA entity separate from Assam. The NHTA Government ran for some time without the participation of the remaining almost beaten vestiges of the NNC. After Naga Hills got NHTA, in a short time, its wisdom demanded a separate State for Naga Hills in the hope of enticing the Naga Nationally inclined. Jayaprakash Narayan, the highly respected Sarvadaya Leader of India, Mr. Chaliha, the Chief Minister of Assam and a great Friend of India at the UN, Rev. Michael Scot of the UK, arranged Meetings with India. Negotiations were carried on with Prime Minister of India Mr. Nehru and some difficult Indian
NNC bows down to Naga Martyrs
Speech of the Z. Royim Yimchungrii, Acting President of Naga National Council on the occasion of Naga National Martyrs' Day of 18th October 2015
Dear Naga people, I humbly stand here to pay homage to the Martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty of Naga people and Nation on this 64th commemoration of Naga National Martrys' Day. As we observe the Day with humble prayer to God Almighty, we should remember that many precious lives were sacrificed for the sovereignty of the Naga Nation and in defence of our democratic rights. More than two lakhs people were killed by the Indian security forces and the Burmese (Myanmar) military forces and these noble sacrifices of the Naga National Martyrs should be remembered in prayer to God today and in days to come. Therefore, each and every Naga citizen should remember our Heroes who sacrificed their lives and were killed by aggressors. The NNC salute the Naga patriots and villagers who died in defense of Naga sovereignty against the armed forces of both India and Burma. The NNC once again condemns the killing of Naga people by the Government of India security forces under occupation of Naga Homeland in complete violation of the United Nations Human Rights Declaration till date under the cover of draconian laws of Armed Forces Special Power Act and Disturbed Area Act. Even civilians were and are not spared under this inhuman, extreme and excessive law. The NNC appeals to the United Nations and conscience of the world to condemn the Government of India in toto for her inhuman action against the Naga people and the North East people for the last more than sixty long years of political suppression and oppression in the Region. The NNC must state again that the Naga National Political Groups and stakeholders in the mainland of Naga inhabited areas of Naga Homeland are still politically intact as far as the sovereign rights of Naga people are
concerned in the present scenario of political development in the Region. The sovereign rights of Naga people were and are blessed by the living God with a special purpose for the Nagas for the extension of our Lord Jesus Christ Kingdom in this very part of the world. Therefore no power or Governments of both Burma (Myanmar) and India can stop the very plan and program of God the Almighty Jehovah .Praise God for His power and blessing for the Naga people and His believers in the Region. I am happy that the world leaders are concerned and start speaking out for the Naga political settlement of the longest conflict in the Region. The NNC therefore appeals to world leaders to speak out and work for permanent settlement for peace and development in the South East Asian Region, which will be economically beneficial to all concerned. The NNC stated clearly to the world at large and the Govt. of India in particular that the United Nations should never accept India to become a permanent member in the United Nations Security Council because of their forceful occupation of Nagaland for the last more than sixty long years in complete violation of the United Nations Human Rights Declaration and the Right to SelfDetermination. The list of problems includes - the North East peoples' problems, Jammu & Kashmir political problem, Punjab human rights problem, India mainland Maoist problem, imposition of draconian laws like Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) and Disturbed Area Act (DAA) in the Region. Unless India settles the "political and human problems" in totality and permanently, no nation or people should support India's bid for permanent membership in the UNSC as long as India suppresses and oppresses the Naga people and others. The world knew very well of the historical and political reality and fate of the people in this part of the world .Therefore the NNC appeals to all right thinking Nations and in particular the
United Nations to recognize the historical and political rights of the Naga people and Nation in order to achieve permanent peace in the Region. The NNC have been working politically for the best for the Naga people for sovereignty without killing, extortion, kidnapping, intimidation or other unethical methods. NNC only works with a Non-violent stand for Naga freedom but we see that the society in the homeland has become so blinkered that they don't appreciate or welcome or support this ethical approach. The Naga people talk so much and shout so loud for Naga Unity but when four major Naga National Political Groups joined hand on the political stand of the Nagas for freedom no one in the homeland appreciated or welcomed the joint unity stand of the four Groups till date. This is the bias of people in the home front, especially the NGOs and other agency. The NNC see that the present society become so prejudiced and full of hate that the unethical people are supported, praised and welcomed but the ethical people who work for the Nation/people in the right perspective for Naga freedom of sovereignty are looked down upon and neglected. If this trend continues in our homeland, the Naga people will become a confused society and suffer more and more. In addition, our mission for political freedom will go further and further towards ruination, which will be a tragedy. May the people in the homeland realize this sooner rather than later in the best interests of Naga freedom of peace and tranquility in the Region. May our living God help revive and save the Naga people for His glory. The NNC reiterates its stand of Naga National Unity based on the correct historical and political rights of the Institution that is Naga National Council for the salvation of Naga sovereignty. In conclusion I on behalf of the NNC once again bow down to our Naga Martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Naga Freedom. VICTORY TO THE NAGA PEOPLE.
Leaders of the time for a Separate State of Nagaland. When the difficult negotiations were being carried on, suddenly in 1960, like a thunder Bolt from the Sky, News splashed in London and some Foreign Papers saying: "PHIZO HAS LANDED IN LONDON ON HIS WAY TO THE UN TO PLEAD FOR THE NAGA CASE" So, they found Phizo after all alive and kicking. How did he reach London? Which way he took?, the top Brass in the Army were at a lost to find out. Then lately, they found out he crossed over to East Pakistan through the Rongmei country in Tamenglong. A Naga Idiom goes: "After the Crow had flown away, what use is hitting the Tree Stump". The Village Guard, VG, formed by the Government against the remnants of the weakened NNC, has done some excellent, sometimes dirty Jobs for the Government in the Naga Hills. The Indian Army seemed not to have learned the above Naga Idiom, often beat about the Bush in search of a Needle. An Army Camp was raised up at an impossible Hillside on the NH-29 from where once upon a time Mr. Hokishe Chief Minister of Nagaland was once ambushed. Like the VG in Eastern Naga Hills, the POWER that be must have thought the best way to stop the Naga Army movement to East Pakistan through the Rongmei country, it to place some VG in some strategic Villages lying against East Pakistan in the route. The Spirits have again returned to Gaidinliu, she was again attracting superstitious rich people with her Sorcery in the Villages. And what she could not achieve with her Sorcery, she tried with threats of power of the Demons. She had no arms but had young male followers with her. An Indian Army Major approached her to accept armed VG. She replied she would call them in her own tongue as Kampai. She was then informed to remember 'Kampai' as VG. Gaidinliu and her Armed Guards were paid the Wages of VG through the overall Management of the Army Major of the VG Commandant. No wonder Gaidinliu was pardoned off by the Government for all the dirty jobs she and her Kampai have perpetrated on unsuspecting Villagers and the NNC Cadres. She was paid a Pension. The NNC enticed Gaidinliu's so called Brigadier from whom they leant everything she did. He became a Christian and died a natural death peacefully in his village. Gaidinliu also passed away hopefully peacefully in her own Village. She is no longer personally available, but her Name is still used a Frankeistein by the Power that be.. The Government of India has not defeated the NSCN IM nor the NNC; it has just shifted to a more subtle War with the Naga. Thepfulhouvi Solo
NNC (NA) President Speech on Naga National Martyrs day My Dear Naga Citizen, At the outset, I thank the Almighty God for He upholds our Naga Nation and its survival throughout our past trials and hardship. On this occasion of the 18th Oct. 2015 our Naga National Martyrs Day. I greet our National workers who are here in this session and working elsewhere for the same cause, the Naga sovereignty. My dear friends, 18 October is our Naga National Martyrs declared day. On this day on the street of Kohima killed Zasibito Nagi, a Judge in the central Court Kohima. It was a day for silent processions in the street to protest against brutal killings of innocent Ragas by the Indian Police and Indian armed forces throughout Nagaland Beginning from this day onward Indian Army killed count-less Naga patriots in the battles and cold blood murders. In some places of Nagaland, the Indian armed force acted upon many shameful inhuman actions like binding the full naked (nude) young girls on trees on the public around and forced on gun point to gather the entire villagers in thousand and beaten to death the unarmed men and boys in teens sometimes more and among the crowd raped mercilessly the nude young girls on the trees. As such blasphemous activities such as sinned against human souls, sinned against God brought them untold miseries to their country. In the gun battles and warfare, the Indian armies never defeated us. Once when we were returning from Ali-command to Nagaland in 1964 We, by mistake entered Indian territory (Mizoram State) the Indian armies in thousand attacked us. So, a fierce gun battle was ensued between us, In the battle we used mortar and sub-machine guns we killed 168 of them and we were Injured one. This time, the peace accord is signed between T. Muivah and GOI. The accord contents is not disclosed in the white paper but it is learnt that in the 3rd points of the contents mentioned about minerals, where as those minerals they could not explore till our sovereignty is recognized since we are stakeholders of those minerals including uranium, when the flag, currency, defence, foreign affairs, communication is free we will invite Genuine International companies to explore freely and the money will flow in trillion yearly. Since, the very inception of our movement we are guarding those deposits and still we will guard this using modem amenities as we are well trained in those modern amenities to defend our country. VILLAGE SPORTS MEET: The modern day battle ground
Rio says games and sports have become the most important events to exhibit one’s strength and weaknesses, talents, skills and diplomacy Morung Express News Dimapur |October 17
The inaugural ceremony of the first ‘Village Sports Meet’ kicked off with full colours and pageantry Saturday evening under the floodlights here at Sovima Cricket Stadium. Organized by EAC Chumukedima in association with Chumukedima Area Village Council Association (CAVCA), 55 villages under EAC Chumukedima Circle are taking part in the 8-day sports meet with ‘Play for Unity’ as the theme. The chief guest of the opening ceremony, Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio, in his address said in the modern context, nations compete with each other through games and sports and not wars and that playgrounds have become the battleNU Lumami (blue jersey) against Walunir Ritsung Artang at the first quarter-finals ground for supremacy. NU Lumami (PGSU-L) defeated Walunir Ritsung Artang 4-3 in a pulsating quarter-finals encounter at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex to enter the semifinals of the XXI MDFA Trophy 2015. A mucky pitch was no deterrent for the two teams to go on the offensive from the blow of the whistle. The first half was very vigorous and competitive see-sawing its way into the second-half. While Walunir Ritsung concentrated upfront, there was a breach at the back 20 minutes into the match. NU Lumami’s left-out Pumgaying made good use of the opportunity maneuvering his way to a safe distance before sending the ball in to get the first lead. Five minutes later, Walunir Ritsung was in for another shocker. A shot at goal was fended off by the Walunir Ritsung goal-keeper but NU Lumami striker Watimeren was at the right spot to counter the deflection. He made no mistake to get a two-goal lead. Walunir Ritsung quickly recovered making a relentless counter attack. It paid off, managing to
breach the defensive line. It was the 33rd minute. The breach left the goal-keeper stranded, who came up for a blocking manoevre only to have Walunir Ritsung’s Mezhiisietuo send the ball over and into the nets. Barely four minutes later, Mezhiisietuo returned with the equalizer. His power-packed shot slipped off the gloves and into the net. The first-half ended with the scores level at 2-2. The second half had both the teams equally matched in ball possession though the opening minutes were dominated by NU Lumami. The deadlock was broken by NU Lumami in the 51st minute through a free-kick. The set-piece opportunity came NU Lumami’s way following a hand foul, which was flawlessly taken by striker, Kuhein from edge of the D-Box. The Walunir Ritsung defensive line was breached again at the 58th minute. Deep in the Walunir Ritsung goal area, Pumgaying recovered a loose ball to score NU Lumani’s fourth and his second goal. But Walunir Ritsung narrowed the two-goal deficit at the 67th minute through a penalty shot rul-
ing in its favour following a hand foul inside the D-Box. Mezhiisietuo took the spot kick to make the score 3-4. Re-energised, Walunir Ritsung made a relentless effort to equalize but fell short of converting chances at goal. At the other end, NU Lumami also missed some good chances to extend the lead. The match witnessed three yellow card cautioning. Walunir Ritsung’s Mhasita and NU Lumami’s goal-keeper, P. Doson were cautioned for scuffling during a free-kick. The NU Lumani goal-keeper, with a yellow card from a previous game, will miss action at the semi-finals. NU Lumami’s Watimeren was the third player to be cautioned. The match patron of the 1st quarter-finals was Nukshimatong Pongener, BDO Tsurangkong. Meanwhile, the MDFA acknowledged the Youth Department of Ungma Baptist Church for undertaking a cleanliness drive on Saturday morning and placing bamboo waste baskets at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex. 2nd Quarter-finals Match October 19 Shitilong SA Vs OCYU (1:00 PM)

The MP said games and sports have become the most important events to exhibit one’s strength and weaknesses, talents, skills and diplomacy. Rio said the playground is the arena to prove one’s skills and bring honour to the village and nation. Rio said even as Nagas are proud of their distinct tribal and village identities, he however reminded that in sports being rich or poor, small or big village, do not
count. The things that matters are talent and sporting spirit, he said. Lauding the organizers for initiating the ‘Village sports meet’ in the commercial and cosmopolitan district, the former chief minister exuded optimism that the meet with the theme “Play for Unity” would foster better understanding and harmony among the various tribes and communities living in Dimapur. Rio said if Nagas and
other communities can coexist in harmony in Dimapur, the whole of Nagaland will be at peace. He said the outside world has wrong impressions about Nagaland state as a violent and insurgency-ridden state due to imposition of AFSPA and “disturbed area” tag. Stressing on the need to upkeep peace, the MP said without peace, festivals and sports are not possible. On the recently signed
“peace accord” between the NSCN (IM) and GoI, Rio said Nagas must seize the day as such opportunity may not come again. Guest of honour, parliamentary secretary for Irrigation & Flood Control, Jacob Zhimomi, said the camaraderie and physical unity exhibited amongst the various tribes in the sports meet should be extended beyond the four corners of the playground. “Let us unite on any issue for the betterment of our society”, the parliamentary secretary said. Jacob also mentioned the then chief minister Neiphiu Rio had taken lots of initiatives to encourage youth in sports, arts and music. EAC Chumukedima, Thungbemo Patton, in his welcome address said the objectives of the sports meet are to promote unity amongst the villages and tribes and to give opportunity to sportspersons to exhibit their talent. Other highlights of the opening ceremony included parade of contingents (players and village council members) of all 55 villages, presentation of dances and songs and display of fireworks.
1st fitness games competition concludes Our Correspondent Kohima | October 17
The first fitness games competition concluded here this evening at the TT Stadium, Kohima. The event, with the tag line ‘Are you up for the challenge’ was organised by Amplified Fitness Club (AFC), Kohima. Dapfhütsumia Youth Organisation (DYO) president Mhalezolie Kire graced the valedictory function as the guest of honour. Kire lauded the AFC for taking up the initiative, while expressing hope that such events will promote physical fitness and sportsmanship in the state. “Body fitness is not just confined to a particular sport discipline but is fundamentally essential to the whole sports discipline.” Kire said that Nagas are blessed with strong and agile physique though generally the physical stature may not be very tall. He however

added that if the physique is groomed properly, then Nagas can excel, particularly in wrestling, boxing, weight lifting and athletics. Stating exercise is at the core of moulding the body of a sportsperson, he added that it not only aids in combating fatal life style diseases but also helps the individual psychologically. While acknowledging the “sports friendly policy” of the State government, he urged the authorities in concern to give attention to body fitness.
A total of 23 participants from different parts of the state took part in the competition. The event featured box jump, bar bell push press, thrusters, pull up, dumb bell snatch (ladder), deadlift, wall ball, over head squat, over head kettlebell, swing, jump rope, jump squat, push up (hand release), burpees, jumping jack, front squat, lunges and clean and jerk. The champion won a cash prize of Rs. 40,000, sponsored by Kemhievonuo Keretsü. The 1st and 2nd
runners-up received cash awards of Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 10,000 sponsored by Kezhaletuo Kire and Neitho Kuotsu, respectively. Khrielasakuo Keretsü, said the fitness games competition was organized with the aim to inculcate a sense of health consciousness and physical fitness in the Naga society. Earlier, the inaugural function on October 16 was graced by Deo Nukhu, Parliamentary Secretary for Higher and Technical Education.
In his address, Nukhu regarded the fitness competition as ‘very essential’ for the present generation, especially for people residing in urban areas. “People from the urban areas don’t get time for exercise, and therefore, this kind of fitness competition comes as very essential for them,” Nukhu asserted. He also proposed for organizing similar competitions even in other districts, as it will help promote the importance of fitness and good health. To this, Nukhu lauded the Amplified Fitness Club for organizing an event such as this, while he also urged everyone to keep themselves fit and healthy.

Ronaldo & Messi driving each other to ever-greater heights
Ronaldo becomes Real Madrid’s all time record scrorer
MADRID, OctObeR 17 (ReuteRs): One moment that perhaps best illustrates the difference between Cristiano Ronaldo and his greatest rival Lionel Messi was Ronaldo's reaction when he won his third FIFA Ballon d'Or award in January. With millions around the world watching the glitzy ceremony in Zurich, Ronaldo, who became Real Madrid's all-time record scorer on Saturday, strode onto stage to collect the gleaming golden ball before clenching his fists in front of him and bellowing "Si!" (Yes!) at the audience. It was the Portugal captain's second consecutive success after he ended Barcelona forward Messi's run of four straight awards between 2009 and 2012 and the latest skirmish in the prolific pair's battle for domination of the world game. Ronaldo's aggressive victory cry, which
prompted widespread ridicule in social media, mirrored the way he plays his football. Always striving to be the centre of attention, his game is based around his superb athletic prowess, with lung-bursting runs, crashing shots and showy flicks and stepovers. Argentina captain Messi, by contrast, appears like a shy schoolboy in public and clearly prefers to be playing football or be at home with his family. When he is on the pitch and in full flow, he has the infectious joy of a youngster, scurrying past opponents with impossibly quick feet and sumptuous ball control before unleashing a telling finish. Few would dispute that Ronaldo and Messi are two of the best players in history but the raging debate over which of them is better is unlikely to ever be satisfactorily concluded for supporters of either camp, or even admiring neutrals. What does Real Madrid's striker Cristiano Ronaldo reacts during their seem clear is that they drive each other on Spanish First Division soccer match against Levante at Sanin rewriting the record books. tiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, October 17.
