Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Smriti Irani on Friday called upon Nagas to be ambassador of peace and non violence as taught and practiced by Gandhi and at the same time imbibe the life of Lal Bahadur Shastri by committing to true governance for the welfare of people. Irani who was on her maiden visit to Nagaland, inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Human Development at Chuchuyimlang village in Mokokchung. The institute is a joint venture of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram and TATA Institute of Social Science (TISS). Invoking for imbibing the teachings of the two Indian greats, Irani said Gandhi and Shastri not only defined Indian history but the history of the world and humanity. On the occasion, the Union Minister also announced the launching of Pradhan Mantri Mudhra

Yojana scheme by the Prime Minister with the aim of “funding the unfunded.” Through this scheme, Irani said youths all across the country can avail loans from 50,000 to 10 lakhs without providing any collateral in order to take up business for self sustenance and self employment. She further encouraged young entrepreneurs deeply rooted in one’s community to take benefit of the scheme by availing adequate financial assistance from the banking sector and enhance one’s
business venture and contribute to the society with their professional service. Irani also paid glowing tribute to Natwarbhai Thakkar, founder of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram on his completion of 60 years of selfless social work based on Gandhian principles in Nagaland. Irani said the journey of Thakkar, who incidentally hails from the same village as her husband, is truly a symbolic illustration of national integration. “Thakkar travelled 60 years ago to Nagaland with only one
SS Khaplang should seek solution with Myanmar and not with India: Wangtin

DiMAPUR, OctObeR 2 (MexN): NSCN (R) president Y Wangtin Naga on Friday advised NSCN (K) chairman SS Khaplang to seize the opportunity at hand along with the other ethnic groups who are in ceasefire with Union of Myanmar for solution on the basis of federal relationship. In a MIP statement, Wangtin suggested that solution with the Mayanmar government would be a far better solution for Khaplang than that expected from the Government of India (GoI). He noted that neither will the GoI entertain SS Khaplang as genuine Naga leader over his Myanmarese nationality nor will the latter open his heart to GoI simply because he belong to Myanmar. However admitting that the solution for the Nagas of Myanmar can be possible only through SS Khaplang, Wangtin said the need of the hour was the moral and all possible support from Nagas of Indian side instead of approaching the GoI for ceasefire review with NSCN (K). He also suggested that the Naga NGOs like the Naga Hoho, ENPO, NMA and the State government should approach

Myanmar government instead of GoI for ceasefire and solution with NSCN (K). While recalling his association with the NSCN (K) chairman, Wangtin said the ceasefire agreement with Myanmar on April 9, 2012 was to demarcate the Naga areas including important township like Maulike, Thamanti, Khamti and Homlin which have gone to Shan state and Tenai and Singbwiyang into Kachin state due to the “weakness and lack of vision” of NSCN (K) chairman SS Khaplang. He said the present Naga self administrative zone is now confined only to Layse, Layhe, Namyong and Pangshaw. Expressing regret on the ‘stubbornness’ of SS Khaplang, Wangtin, who had been close associate of the NSCN (K) chairman before he was expelled, revealed that Khaplang confronted the Myanmar authority on the sovereignty issue instead of trying to understand the plight of the Nagas in Myanmar which needed its territory demarcated officially. Meanwhile, NSCN (R) has vowed that it “cannot and will not compromise on the issue of Naga sovereignty.” (Full text on Page 10)
dream of a united nation, not only as people but to resonate as one soul across the world,” the Union Minister extolled. Speaking as guest of honor, Nagaland Chief Minister, TR Zeliang, said the concern and support shown by the Union Minister, HRD towards the Naga people is a reflection of Government of India’s attachment to the people of Nagaland particularly in skilling the rural youths. Zeliang also felicitated and congratulated Thakkar, for tirelessly and self-
lessly working towards the uplift of the living condition of the rural youth. He also extended gratitude to TISS for establishing the fifth campus in Chuchuyimlang village and to Professor S. Parasuraman, Director, TISS, Mumbai for accepting the challenges to run an institute in a remote village with minimal infrastructure. The chief minister congratulated the citizens and village council of Chuchuyimlang for generously donating 232 acres of land for the establishment of the institute. Natwarbhai Thakkar, in his welcome speech, said Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Human Development is the “best gift of mother India to the people of Nagas and the North East.” With the institute, Thakkar envisioned that Chuchuyimlang village will become an educational hub not only for Nagaland but for the entire North East and at the same time promote the Look East Policy. The human development institute at Chuchuyimlang is a part of TISS extension programme to reach out to the unreached in accessing education, which in turn would equip society to develop human capabilities.
New Delhi, OctObeR 2 (iANS): India on Friday pledged to cut its emission levels by 33-35 percent over the next 15 years in what Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar termed an ambitious, fair and balanced commitment to protect the environment, married to the country’s own agenda for sustainable development. Ahead of the crucial 21st meeting of the Conference of Parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change due in Paris from November 30 to December 11, India made a 38-page submission under what is called the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs). The submissions, called from the 196 parties (or countries) under the framework, are to serve as the basis for negotiating an agreement that will lay the path for a low-carbon, climate-resilient future. Thus far, 120 countries, collectively accounting for 85.3 percent of global emissions, have made submissions. “Through this submission, India intends to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33-35 percent by 2030 from 2005 level. This commitment is further echoed in India’s actions in climate change adaptation with the setting up of its own ‘National Adaptation Fund’,” said the New Delhi’s document. “India’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions is fair and ambitious, considering the fact that India is attempting to work towards low carbon emission pathway while endeavouring to meet all developmental challenges the country faces today.” The submission said the country’s current policy framework also includes a favourable environment for a rapid increase in renewable energy, move towards low carbon sustainable development and adapting to the impacts of climate change - the highest possible efforts as evident from its multiple initiatives. “Accordingly, India’s development

To help better communication among the Naga people, ‘Key Words: A glossary of Sixteen Nagaland languages’ by the Kohima Educational Trust (KET) was published on October 2 at Hotel Japfü, Kohima, and released by PB Acahrya, Governor of Nagaland & Manipur. “The objective of the glossary is for Nagas to learn one another’s languages and to start communicating in them so as to foster a feeling of oneness and belongingness. The second objective is a hope that such work will assist researchers and others but most of all that it may help to protect our tribal languages which are all in the vulnerable or endangered list of languages,” said Charles Chasie, President, Kohima Educational Society (KES). The book, initiated by late Dr. Gordon Graham, a veteran of the Battle of Kohima and founder of the Kohima Educational Trust (KET), took five years to complete.
The glossary has been confined only to 16 recognized tribe languages in Nagaland so that it does not create any possible controversy, Chasie explained. Dr. Graham got in touch with Charles Levine, a lexicographer who had worked with Random House for years, who took up the task of collecting initial words and phrases in New York. This collection was sent to Kohima for consultation with language expert Professor D Kuolie, in the Department of Linguistic, NU. After the translation was completed, the copy was sent to Douglas Williamson, a professional British designer from Macmillan Books who was assisted by Essie Cousins and Sylvia May from Harper Collins, who helped in the clarifications, explanations of word meanings, special connotations etc. “The identity of the society is the language,” said PB Acharya adding that students should be rooted in their mother tongue. Unlike the rest of the country where

states are formed on the basis of one language, Acharya noted that in Nagaland every tribe has its own distinct language and commended that the author of the book has strengthened the identity of the Nagas. Taking a note of the migration of Naga youth towards other cities, Acharya asked why young Naga graduates outside are more contended than the ones in the state. “In the name of religion, education, are we doing justice to the society?” asked Acharya. . “One of the most important things any society needs is the building of good human beings. If we have good people, there would be tolerance, understanding, appreciation, love and peace,” said Charles Chasie, during the book launch. He educators to contribute towards developing good human beings and highlighted the importance of structures needed to build an organized society. So long as knowledge keepers and idea-givers in society find their due place with recognition
and reward, that society will never go wrong noted, Chasie. “What moves our society are muscle, money and political power. Even the otherwise powerful Church seems to become powerless in certain areas. Talks about Nagaland being a Christian State has not rid us of corruption, extortions, violence and all kinds of crimes- some of them earlier considered taboo,” he lamented. Chasie also announced the starting of Dr. Grodon Graham Prize for Naga literature from 2016, aimed at recognizing and rewarding the knowledge keepers and idea givers in Naga society. A brief overview of KET and KES was shared by Pheluopfelie Kesiezie. KET has built a 30 bedded students hostel near Pangsha to meet the needs of poor students, constructed a Basketball court at Phek, and War KET library located at State Library which includes rare war books. KET also plans to reach out to students in remote areas.

plans will continue to lay a balanced emphasis on economic development and environment,” it said, recounting the framework’s mandate based on the principles of equity, as also common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities of the member-nations. The paper submitted by India, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, is based on the 1992 Kyoto convention and says that both in terms of cumulative global emissions and per capita emission, it has caused much less damage to the environment but its actions to mitigate climate change were fair and ambitious. “Much before the climate change debate began, Mahatma Gandhi, regarded as the father of our nation, had said that we should act as ‘trustees’ and use natural resources wisely as it is our moral responsibility to ensure that we bequeath to the future generations a healthy planet,” the document said. The issue of climate change, ahead of the Paris conference, has been high on the Indian government’s agenda. During his visit to the US last month, this was the key point of discussions which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had with leaders of several countries, notably the US, the UK, France, Japan and Germany. “India’s contributions represent the utmost ambitious action in the current state of development. The world as a whole, including the developed world, needs to act more ambitiously. I am positive we will become a part of the solution. We will produce results,” Javadekar told a press conference here. He said India’s expectation from Paris was a balanced pact with all components mitigation, adaptation, technology, finance and capacity building - consistent with the principles and provisions of the convention. India also outlined in its document the impact of climate change on its economy and nation as a whole.

where and people are proud of North East, especially Nagaland,” Imsong said while interacting with The Morung Express on the 1st anniversary of SBA. “I felt honored that even PM Narendra Modi has mentioned me in a few of his speeches, met me and encouraged me twice,” she added. Her cleanliness initiative has also inspired folks in Na-
galand to follow in her footsteps. “I have received remarkable support and appreciation back home too. In Mokokchung, a group of youngsters will soon be starting Swachh Bharat initiatives,” she revealed. Imsong attributed her success by and large to the ethos she had leant in her growing years.
From waking up to going to bed, life on the hills is all about hard work and focus. If we utilize these traits in the right direction, we can achieve anything in this universe, opined Imsong. “Nagaland has a glorious past and it deserves to be noticed ‘for the right reasons.’ Each one of us should contribute to this,” she maintained, adding all that is needed is the selection of the right path. Commenting about the sanitation habits in Naga society, Imsong remember how as a kid she has always seen people in village getting together to clean the public areas and signs to dispose garbage properly. “I have no hesitation to say that my village Ungma is very clean, she stated. If properly monitored, we can also become an Open Defecation free state like Sikkim and make it to the list of the cleanest states in India, she said. “The habits of cleanliness are already there, they need to be channelized into achieving bigger targets that become the harbingers of change in the mindsets nationally.”
Not someone to sit on her laurels, of which she has won many including the Pride of North East Award, Radio Mirchi Lady Achiever Award among others, she is already planning her next initiative. “My immediate plans are to institutionalize Shramdan, basically social service in the society and community for development, wherein common citizens join in the efforts of SBA,” she explained. Presently, her hands are full. Mission Prabughat has now evolved into Mission Parijat, another cleaning mission besides a regular column for Business world and various appearances espousing clean initiatives. Imsong counts her father, Chungpongsusang Imsong of Ungma Imlang, as an ardent support and enduring guide though out her life and on her current mission. Besides her present engagement, Imsong like random traveling, reading and learning though observation and as a normal woman, loves shopping. “However, I wish I could be a good chef,” she sighed.

It was a most unfortunate to learn that few NST buses and three private buses including Jagdish Travels, Deep Travels and Royal Travels are plying their buses from ISBT. On the other hand, all the other buses and transport are plying from their own counters. We would like to urge upon the department and District administration to make
it mandatory for all the buses and transport to ply from ISBT. All private buses and transport plying from various corners of Dimapur should be banned from doing so. The ISBT instead of growing into a modernised travelling hub is degrading in every sphere. Making it a point to all the private run transport to operate from ISBT will mean alot to the people of our state and the department in many ways.

He said that 706,296 people out of around 11 lakh population of Mizoram would be provided rice at subsidised rate under NFSA while the remaining households would be able to buy eight kg rice per month at the rate of Rs.15 per kg. In Imphal, Manipur's Food and Education Minister M. Okendro said the state government would begin NFSA implementation from January next. The minister along with senior state officials held a meeting with his Tripura counterpart Bhanulal Saha in Agartala recently and gathered information about the implementation of the NFSA in Tripura. "From September 1, we are providing rice at the rate of Rs.2 per kg instead of Rs.3 per kg, as stipulated in the Act," Saha told reporters in Agartala. However, we have decided to continue TPDS (Targeted Public Distribution System) to all 969,000 ration card holders comprising priority and non-priority households. The non-priority households would not get any subsidy on food
grain." An additional annual expenditure of Rs.16.73 crore would be borne by the state exchequer to provide food grain subsidy for priority households. The Tripura minister said that families belonging to above poverty line or non-priority households, which are outside the ambit of NFSA, would be provided rice at the rate of Rs.13 per kg and five kg per head per month, subject to a maximum of 15 kg for a family instead of earlier 20 kg. Assam to spend Rs 50,000 cr Mizoram NGOs to 'cleanse' in new scheme for rural areas society of homosexuals gUwAhAti, OctOber 2 (pti): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced to launch a new employement generation and infrastructure building scheme for rural areas under Mahatma Gandhi's name and spend Rs 50,000 crore over the next five years for this. "We plan to launch the scheme from next year. We will spend Rs 50,000 crore over the next five years for this scheme. We have already tied up with the World Bank for a portion of the funding," Gogoi told PTI in an interview here. While a portion would be funded through World Bank loans, the rest would be made available by the state government and borrowings from local banks, he said. "In the next 2-3 days, we will set up a cabinet committee on this. It will then decide on forming an Expert Group for launching and implementation of the Scheme," Gogoi said, adding the group of experts would include people from the global lender and Indian industry as well. The scheme is proposed to be rolled out from next year and the Bill would be introduced in the next session of the As-

Elaborating on the scheme, Gogoi said the details were yet to be worked out, but it would create jobs and build infrastructure in various areas such as rural connectivity, store houses, processing unit, cold storage, power, marketing unit and network, transport and packaging among others. "Our main target is to uplift all the people in below poverty line to above poverty line in the next five years. This is in sync with our plan to develop Smart Villages across the state," the chief minister said. He said the World Bank association was for developing agri-related businesses in rural areas. "Now we have mixed it with overall rural development agenda and employment generation. So it will be a scheme of the World Bank, the Assam government and the Indian banks. We will develop the villages in a cluster way," Gogoi said. He said if implemented properly, the Mahtama Gandhi Emloyment Generation and Rural Transformation Scheme would change the face of rural Assam.
Mahanta dares PM on foreigners gUwAhAti, OctOber 2 (tNN): Former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who is opposing the NDA government's ordinance to provide shelter to non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan, has dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set an example by accommodating foreigners in his home state Gujarat. "Assam has already suffered a lot. Assam had to bear the burden of refugees in the 1965 war and again in 1971. Though Assam has been bifurcated many times after this, the burden of illegal foreigners is still on us. If the NDA government is doing it, we would like to see PM Narendra Modi to take the initiative by providing them shelter in his home state Gujarat,"
said Mahanta, while addressing a press conference in the city on Thursday. The Centre had decided, on humanitarian considerations, to exempt Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals belonging to minority communities who entered India on or before December 31 in 2014 from the relevant provisions of rules and order made under the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920 and the Foreigners Act, 1946, in respect of their entry and stay in India without such documents or after the expiry of those documents, as the case may be. The Centre accordingly issued two notifications in the official gazette earlier this week under the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920 and the Foreigners'
Act, 1946. Mahanta, a twotime chief minister of the state, has been opposing the ordinance and said it violates the norms of Assam Accord, which was signed following a bloody Assam Agitation in 1985. "According to the Assam Accord, anybody irrespective of his or her religion and other identities who came to India after March 25, 1971 is an illegal citizen. But this ordinance is a violation of the Accord which was signed by the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and which was obliged by every political party," added Mahanta. Mahanta, along with a few others, have floated a forum - Asom Andolan Sangrami Manch (AASM) — with the people who were part of the Assam Agitation.
Wancho to meet Gadkari to cancel highway contract New Delhi, OctOber 2 (iANS): A delegation of the Wancho community from Arunachal Pradesh is all set to meet union Minister Nitin Gadkari to seek cancellation of a tender given to a Gujaratbased company to construct a 47.12-km highway in their state. The community leaders are likely to meet union Road Transport and Highway minister Gadkari on October 8. The community has alleged that Monte Carlo company was given the tender to construct the Longding-Kanubari trans highway early this year. Instead of carrying out the work itself it has sub-contracted the work to a local company named Nabam Tulon, months before the work was to start. "We want real development in Longding as we have suffered for long. If Monte Carlo company is unable to execute the construction of the Kanubari-Longding highway then why did it participate in the tendering process?" said Nokchai Boham, head of Wancho community ahead of their likely meet with Gadkari. "Why is it handing over the work now to a local company close to Chief Minister
Nabam Tuki. We will meet highway minister Nitin Gadkari soon," he added. The community has also expressed disappointment that many projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) being executed by contractors from outside the district have deprived the local contractors of this opportunity and that the quality of the work is often compromised. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Ramesh Negi said: "The Arunachal government has only a role in the land acquisition. As the tender was given by the central government's PSU, so it is for them to deal with it." A.K. Srivastava, executive engineer of Monte Carlo, said: "Since I joined this company, the work was given on sub-contract to Nabam Tulon for the construction of the highway. Whatever the norm is, as of now, the work will be carried on by the Nabam Tulon company only." Following the issue, the Wancho People's Committee on Friday prevented the survey team of Nabam Tulon company, who arrived in Longding to start the planning of the highway construction.
ons. The team further extended their operation to the Kepre area of neighboring Assam wherein the joint team of 18 AR and 43 AR along with Assam Police busted a hideout of DHNA deep inside the jungles of Langokro. Deputy Commander-in-Chief Dimon Haslong alias Choudhary was arrested. In addition the troops also unearthed three dug-in caches of assault rifles, ammunition, radio set walkie-talkies, detonators, combat dresses, documents, extortion note slips etc. During the operation, the AR informed that a civilian named Paramjit Kemprai who was kept in forced custody by DHNA for forced recruitment was also rescued. Thaijandro Langthasa alias Jamang, the AR said, was the “most wanted terrorist in Assam with almost nine cases against him for anti-national activities.”

Roy said that AKRSU is angry against BJP because of its alleged failure to fulfill its promise of granting ST status it made in the run-up to the Lok Sabha election. "It is more than a year now the BJP is in power at the centre. But after coming to power we have observed the Modi government is delaying the process of granting ST status. Majority of members of our community voted for BJP in Lok Sabha polls because of the promise," Roy said. The six communities demanding ST status are Koch Rajbongshis, Tai Ahoms,
Moran, Motok, Chutiya and tea garden labourers known as Adivasis in the state. Roy claimed that Koch Rajbongshis are deciding factor in assembly polls in at least 50 out of 126 constituencies, and forms sizeable electorates in 35 constituencies. "We have called a convention at Bongaigaon on October 6 where we will finalize our agitation programme against the centre and BJP. On October 12 we will stage dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to tell the centre that six communities in the state are unhappy over its flip-flop stand on the ST issue," Roy said.

LOs aNgeLes, OctOber 2 (iaNs): Technology giants Google and Microsoft have agreed to drop 18 patent lawsuits between the two companies in the US and Germany, the media reported. The agreement brings an end to legal battles over the use of technology in mobile phones and Wi-Fi and of patents covering games for the Xbox videogaming console and Windows products, Efe cited the two companies as saying in a joint statement. “Google and Microsoft have agreed to collaborate on certain patent matters and anticipate working together in other areas in the future to benefit our customers,” the companies said without disclosing financial terms. The legal battles began in 2010, when Microsoft accused Motorola, later acquired by Google, of noncompliance with its obligation to allow companies to license patents covering wireless networking and video technologies at a reasonable price. Google sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo last year but kept some assets, including the majority of its patents.

kOLkata, OctOber 2 (iaNs): Backed by huge discounts and the rising use of smartphones, the Indian e-commerce market is poised to grow 36 percent during the 2015-20, a new report has said. According to a recent report from Canada based TechSci Research, expanding smartphone user base, huge discounts and offers, increasing per capita disposable income and the growing youth population will be the drivers for the predicted compounded annual growth rate of 36 percent. “India’s workforce comprises of young consumers who have less time for going out and shopping at regular brick and mortar stores. Such a scenario creates potential for online shopping in a market as huge as India,” Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research said in a statement. “Moreover, great offers and discounts by the leading e-commerce players further increase consumer interest towards the products,” Karan Chechi said. India’s e-commerce market is dominated by eservices segment, on account of booming online travel market, which is emerging as the most preferred medium for planning holidays, making hotel bookings and buying tickets for travel by various modes including air, bus and rail. As per the report, rising number of high speed internet users is encouraging businesses to innovate and offer a diversified array of products and services online. “Over the last few years, with significant improvements in the payment structure in e-commerce market, consumers in India are gradually shifting towards online space and are shedding their belief of online shopping medium being unsafe,” the firm said. Consumer electronics, online travel, apparel and accessories are the market segments exhibiting promising growth. Also, with the option of same day delivery, online groceries stores are also entering into the country’s online space.

AICC members slam NPCC President Stolen in Dimapur, DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 2 (MExN): Several members of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) have hit out at present Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president, K Therie accusing him of harping on the disqualification of the 8 Congress MLAs on ground of BJP’s presence in the government. “He should first clarify the disputed direction given before and after trust vote by the respective AICC official i/c of Nagaland to support Rio, although at that very point of time the BJP MLAs and party officials were still with Rio. Secondly, he should clear his stand whether he also endorsed the direction to support Rio or to welcome Rio to the party. Thirdly, he should explain the actual reason why the AICC Secretary, despite direction given had refused
to become a co-petitioner of the Disqualification Petition,” stated a joint statement signed by AICC members KV Pusa, Joshua Sumi, Lampha Konyak, Tarie Zeliang and Asu Keyho. The NPCC president’s recent statement, it said is “jumbled with self-contradiction, fabrication and deserves befitting response.” The AICC members alleged that he had attempted to “lure senior Congress leader (personally testified) to join BJP in March 2015…” “Hiding behind the garb of secularism vs communalism has become his safest refuge at this juncture…” they said, while accusing the NPCC president of assuming the role of a “modern day champion of India’s secularism…” “In between his expulsion from INC in 2002 and readmis-
sion to the party in 2007 he gave full support to communal BJP against Congress,” they added. The AICC members admitted that support for a solution of Naga issue has become a determinant factor for victory or defeat during election “as is evident from last three consecutive Assembly & Parliament Elections.” The Congress MLAs, they stated, joined the ‘all party government’ in Nagaland “to fall in line with the general aspiration of the people for a solution,” and to “seek favourable mandate of the electorate in the coming elections.” This was done, it claimed, after “getting endorsement from the party rank and file.” However, they lamented that the NPCC President “suddenly changed his ideological gear from the road he took in 2003Naga solution to his recently
abandoned (BJP) road- communalism to impress the AICC and protect his chair…” Alleging that Therie was the sole petitioner of the disqualification petition against the 8 MLAs, the AICC members sought clarification as to “why he intentionally misled the party rank & file and the public into believing that the 8 Congress MLAs had submitted a Letter of Merger with NPF to the Speaker, NLA thereby necessitating the disqualification process.” “The Reply, dated 28/09/15 of K. Sekhose, Under Secretary & PIO, Nagaland Legislative Assembly Secretariat, to the RTI Application, dated 03/09/15 filed by one Moa Emchen, Member Secretary, Public Grievance Department, NPCC, has categorically stated ‘no document has been received by this Secretariat regarding the merger
of 8 (eight) Congress MLA with Naga People’s Front (NPF)’”, the AICC members revealed. Referring to Therie’s defense of V Narayanasamy on the release of Rs.712 crores for 6th ROP in 2012, the AICC members termed it as a “total reverse of the party’s stand on this issue.” “Foreseeing that the release of the fund at a time when the state was worst hit with financial crunch, the party cautioned the MoS of potential misuse of the fund but the plea was completely ignored. Out of this amount, only Rs.472.55 crores was released to 72 departments and the remaining Rs.239.44 crores just vanished in thin air. Where the unaccounted money has gone and who actually has committed “a crime against our people” will be brought to light soon,” they added.

This was followed by court case which the company claimed to be in pending till date and thereby depriving Longleng district of the only major road that connects the districts with the rest of the other districts,” stated a press release issued by Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) President Hongkam D Ngonyen and General Secretary Lungchem Phom. PSC alleged that the present position of the company leading to the halt in progress of work is solely the fault of the company concerned. Stating that LonglengChangtongya road is the only lifeline for Longleng
district, which transports essential commodities, PSC highlighted that because of the deplorable road condition, there is tremendous artificial rise in price of essential commodities and fares of public transportation rendering negative impact on the people and weakening the economy. PSC also highlighted that the inaccessible road condition is directly affecting educational as well as health aspects. It also hampers easy transportation of heavy vehicles, especially passenger bus, and has threatened the lives of the passengers to encounter accidents. The PSC also expressed regret that the people of the district are now
compelled to maintain the road voluntarily and spending huge amount of money. While lamenting that the “State government has done nothing towards eliminating this ‘talks’ tag and providing proper road connectivity to Longleng district,” PSC questioned the responsibility of the State government, particularly the Chief Minister and Minister, National Highway, for remaining silent. The PSC demanded that the company concerned must act immediately by deploying necessary regular labour force to maintain the entire abandoned SARDP (NE) roads and make accessible to the commuters.

recovered in Zbto Morung Express News Dimapur | October 2
A mini bus stolen from Dimapur was recovered two days later in Zunheboto, when the car-lifters started looking for prospective buyers. The Force mini bus, which belongs to Sinai Ministry, was stolen from Midland, near the PWD office, Dimapur on September 28. Prompt reaction by the police and swift information sharing via social media as well as news ads played a key role in the recovery of the vehicle. According to the police, FIR on the vehicle stolen was received on the morning of September 28 after which all check-posts were alerted across the State. Two days later help came from an unexpected source as police were tipped off of a possible stolen mini bus being put up for sale in Zunheboto. The source was not the regular police informer but an informed
citizen, who learned via social media of a vehicle of a similar model going missing from Dimapur. The citizen got information that some people in Zunheboto were trying to sell off a mini bus for Rs. 5 lakhs. The Dimapur police was informed, which in turn alerted the Zunheboto police. The Zunheboto police swiftly reacted, locating the suspect vehicle in less than an hour, while verifying that it was the mini bus stolen in Dimapur. Two persons were also arrested; whose identities were withheld pending investigation. The Sinai Ministry, meanwhile, has thanked the Dimapur and Zunheboto police for the effort put in to recover the vehicle. The ministry also extended its gratitude to the unnamed individual, whose information led to the recovery, and the many different individuals, churches and ministries, who prayed for the Ministry.

Banned Books Week: Celebrating the controversial Tracey Mumford
L
ibrarians and booksellers spend their whole year steeped in books, but come the last week of September, many take the time to celebrate a notorious group of them: the banned books. Banned Books Week started in 1982 as an effort to raise awareness about censorship in schools and libraries. It's sponsored by the American Library Association, the Comic Book League Defense Fund and other prominent literary organizations. It's also endorsed by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. According to the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom, there were 311 reported challenges to books last year — but that's likely only a fraction of actual incidents. According to Kristin Pekoll, assistant director of the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom, only 20 percent of librarians said they always report challenges. In the last month alone,
two award-winning bestsellers were challenged by parents in stories that made national headlines. In Tallahassee, Fla., "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night" was pulled from Lincoln High School's summer reading list after parents complained about obscenities and "atheistic beliefs" in the text. In Tennessee's Knox County, a mother of a high school sophomore is lobbying for "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" to be removed from the local school system entirely. The nonfiction book describes the groundbreaking medical innovations that stem from Lacks' cells, after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. The mother's complaint called the book "pornographic." For every challenge that comes in, there is a librarian or bookseller ready to champion the books that draw controversy. Banned Books Week focuses those efforts. "Banned Books Week
is my favorite week of the whole year," says Kathy Adams, the children's book specialist at Valley Bookseller in Stillwater, Minn. "Seriously, it's better than Christmas." To celebrate the week, Valley Bookseller has organized displays of the most frequently challenged titles. "Promoting books that have been banned or challenged shines a light on these attempts at censorship," said Adams. "It is an eye-opening experience for many." Adams said that customers are often surprised by the books that appear on the displays — some of them are classics or childhood favorites. "That one? Why?!" Adams said, imitating the outbursts she hears. "Why" can be answered: Every year, the ALA categorizes the reasons challenged books make the list. The file for the most challenged book of last year, Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True
The 2014 Top 10 List of Frequently Challenged Books 1)
Diary of a Part-Time Indian," reads: Reasons: anti-family, cultural insensitivity, drugs/alcohol/smoking, gambling, offensive language, sex education, sexually explicit, unsuited for age group, violence. Additional reasons: "depictions of bullying" Increasingly, Pekoll said, "the books that are challenged are ones that portray persons of color or who are gay or trans. Eight out of ten books on the 2014 Top Ten Most Frequently Challenged books raise issues of diversity and inclusion or include diverse characters." The rate of diverse
books being challenged is significantly disproportionate to the number of diverse books being published, Pekoll noted. While the number of diverse books being challenged is increasing, the total number of challenges is not. Pekoll notes that challenges have decreased since the 1990s, which may be in part due to the internet. "The Internet has helped tremendously to raise awareness of cases of censorship. Many people believe that censorship doesn't happen anymore. Now we see when and where it happens," Pekoll said. In a novel-worthy twist, the attention that

13 Common Items for Smartphone apps becoming new age nanny for Indian kids Getting Rid of Ants IANS
From adhesive tape to vinegar, these 13 common items will tackle your ant problem and help you get rid of ants for good. Adhesive Tape Is an army of ants marching toward the cookie jar on your countertop or some sweet prize in your pantry? Create a "moat" around the object by surrounding it with adhesive tape placed sticky side up. Basters If you've had it with sharing your living quarters with roaches or ants, give them the heave-ho by sprinkling boric acid along any cracks or crevices where you've spotted the intruders. Use a baster to blow small amounts of the powder into hard-to-reach corners and any deep voids you come across. Note: Keep in mind that boric acid can be toxic if ingested by young children or pets. Chalk Keep ants at bay by drawing a line around home entry points. The ants will be repelled by the calcium carbonate in the chalk, which is actually made up of ground-up and compressed shells of marine animals. Scatter powdered chalk around garden plants to repel ants and slugs. See more uses for Chalk. Flour Sprinkle a line of flour along the backs of pantry shelves and wherever you see ants entering the house. Repelled by the flour, ants won't cross over the line.

"Being the first-movers in this category, we had to face many challenges in its initial stages and to create a unique business model," Gupta added. This app is available for both Apple and Android users for downloading. The app currently caters to parents in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-NCR,
Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. Soon, it will expand its reach in other cities. In the last one year, "mycity4kids" website has received 20 million page views by nearly 3.5 million parents. There are some other apps too for parents. For instance, "Family Tracker" helps parents track the whereabouts of their children and keep a tab on their activities inside home or while they play in the neighbourhood park. Considering child safety as a main concern, another app "Northstar" provides a platform for parents and schools which can be used to track the location of school buses. This mobile app is used to keep track of the children's location as they commute between school and home. There are also apps like "Dr. Panda's Hospital" that teach kids how to nurture pets at a young age and help them become sensitive to others. Another app named "10 Monkeys Multiplication" helps children master tables from two to 10 in a fun and engaging way.
less these women are taking over key positions—which, according to recent data, they aren’t. Women make up 52 percent of the professional workforce but make up only 8.1 percent of the top earners overall. They hold just 4.6 percent of CEO positions at S&P 500 companies, and 5 percent at Fortune 500 companies. Data from the World Bank in 2014 found that only 19 percent of U.S. Congress members were women—the highest percentage to date. Shor and his team were most surprised to learn underrepresentation of women in the media extended into entertainment stories. But according to data from The American Center for Progress, it’s reflective of a larger problem. In the film industry, women accounted for just 16 percent of all the directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers, and editors who worked
on the top-grossing 250 domestic films of 2013. “The large majority of those people mentioned in news, business, and even entertainment articles are men,” Shor said. “The entertainment coverage may be especially surprising because people tend to believe that female celebrities are just as, if not more, famous and draw at least equal amounts of attention as their male counterparts.” While Shor and his team note that part of the reason for the discrepancy is the people in charge who decide what to cover (mostly men), they conclude that overall the problem is related to the amount of women in leadership roles. “The resulting dominance of men as subjects of public and dinner-table conversation may reinforce and normalize in the minds of audiences the notion that power and newsworthiness are something men have and, apparently, deserve.” Other experts who have studied this issue may beg to differ. In the 2008 bookWomen and Media: A Critical Introduction authors Carolyn M. Byerly and Karen Ross argue that the achievements of women are not less than men, they’re merely overlooked. In Women, Media, and Politics, Pippa Norris brings together 21 essays from journalists and academics who explore why the area of women and media is deeply polarized. The quote that perhaps best sums up their arguments is that of researcher Margaret Gallagher from her oft-cited review of early literature on women and media. “Perhaps the most important image is, in fact, a ‘non-image,’” she writes. “It is the absence of women in the media output which becomes the most striking, once it has been highlighted.”

Salt If ants are beating a path to your home, intercept them by sprinkling salt across the door frame or directly on their paths. Ants will be discouraged from crossing this barrier. Media Is Still for Men, by Men Abby Haglage The Dailybeast

hile discussion on gender bias in media coverage generally centers on sports, a new paper bolsters the theory that the phenomenon transcends subject matter. Published in the American Sociological Review Thursday, the study analyzes content from over 2,000 U.S. newspapers, magazines, and websites dating from 1983 to 2009. Using a news analysis system called Lydia, researchers were able to scan hundreds of digital records and systematically catalogue the incidence of male vs. female mentions. The results provide not only new data on the media’s underrepresentation of women, but possible explanations why. Of the articles studied, five out of every six names referenced in the news coverage
were men, meaning they made up a staggering 82 percent of the coverage. The authors found the underrepresentation of women in written media to be caused by two factors. One, the media’s focus on the “highest strata” of individuals; and two, the lack of women in these positions. “The media focuses nearly exclusively on individuals at the top of occupational and social hierarchies, who are mostly men: CEOs, congressmen, movie directors, and the like,” says Eran Shor, lead author of the study and a sociology professor at McGill University. “And because these famous individuals account for most of the name occurrences in the news, the overall coverage difference between women and men has remained extremely wide.” It was the latter reason, the lack of women in powerful positions, that Shor concluded to
be the driving force behind the bias. “As long as men continue to monopolize the highest levels of occupational and social hierarchies, we are not likely to see a major shift in media coverage,” he says. Despite more females in the industries studied—business, technology, entertainment, and sports—the gap has remained stagnant in some areas and worsened in others. “Male names have historically received at least four times as much exposure as female names and this ratio is still nearly 3:1 by the end of our observation period,” the authors write. “[But] when looking at the larger and more representative set of newspapers in our data-base, for which only recent digital data is available, the ratio is nearly 5:1.” An influx of women into previously all-male industries doesn’t change the coverage un-

Talk to Each Other, Not Your Phone Sherry Turkle The New York Times
M
y recent Sunday Review essay, adapted from my book “Reclaiming Conversation,” made a case for face-to-face talk. The piece argued that direct engagement is crucial for the development of empathy, the ability to put ourselves in the place of others. The article went on to say that it is time to make room for this most basic interaction by first accepting our vulnerability to the constant hum of online connection and then designing our lives and our products to protect against it. Some readers agreed with me. Others, even as they disagreed, captured the fragility of conversation today. For example, one commenter, Joseph Middleton, characterized my essay as “yet another ‘putdown-your-cell-phone’ article” and said my discussion “missed an important point.” If people don’t pay attention to one another, he wrote on Facebook, it’s because “most human interaction is dull and pedestrian, whether its medium is computer, phone or face-toface.” So, if people “are interesting, they have interesting conversations, both online and in-person. If not, not.” The problem for Middleton isn’t that technology causes us to lose interest in one another. For him, most people are simply not that interesting, in any medium. I have heard this objection before: In order for conversation to earn its right to be attended to, it needs to be compelling and novel. This way of thinking incorporates a view of conversation as a transactional tool: It has to accomplish something or provide new information. So, if these are your values and you find yourself in a conversation, there is pressure to be interesting and to perform. With that kind of pressure, it is not surprising that so many of us find it more relaxing to interact on screens. There, where we can edit and revise, we imagine that we are less likely to be dull and more likely to seem interesting. Middleton offers his view of human conversation as a critique of my thesis; I see it as evidence of
why we find ways around conversation. It holds conversation up to a standard that inhibits us from talking with spontaneity, from letting conversation develop naturally. Yet these are the kinds of conversations in which intimacy and empathy thrive. In my own research I met young people who share Middleton’s view. In response to the pressure that conversation is there to provide information and accomplish something tangible, they retreat to their phones. Take, for example, Randall, 24, a real estate broker. He explained that when he and his friends get together in person, they are never “just talking.” Rather, “someone always has their phone out, showing something.” I asked Randall what happens when there is a lull in the conversation. He looked at me, seeming not to understand. Later he explained that, in his mind, he had just made it clear that there is never a lull in the conversation. Anything like that would be filled by turning to your phone. But I hadn’t understood this yet so I tried again. I said, “Like, if things got quiet among your friends?” Randall said, “Oh, if the conversation was not providing information, I’d check out some YouTube stuff I’m behind on … or take a picture of us and post it.”
Teenage night owls at high obesity risk
I
f your teenage kid loves to spend night time with gadgets, ask him or her to reduce this habit as this may make him fat in just five years' time. According to research, teenagers and adults who go to bed late on weeknights are more likely to gain weight than their peers who hit the hay earlier. "The results highlight adolescent bed times, not just total sleep time, as a potential target for weight management during the transition to adulthood," said Lauren Asarnow, lead author and doctoral student in University of California-Berkeley. For this, the researchers analysed data from a nationally representative cohort of more than 3,300 youths and adults. They found that for every hour of sleep they lost, they gained 2.1 points on the body mass index (BMI). This gain occurred roughly over a five-year period. The results show that many teenagers do not get the recommended nine hours sleep a night and report having trouble staying awake at school. The human circadian rhythm, which regulates physiological and metabolic functions, typically shifts to a later sleep cycle at the onset of puberty. The results suggest that adolescents who go to bed earlier will "set their weight on a healthier course as they emerge into adulthood", Asarnow added. The paper appeared in the journal Sleep. Randall talked about the value of getting together with friends in person. But he described friendships in which he withholds full attention from the people he is with. He can’t tolerate what one person I interviewed called “the boring bits.” And, of course, Randall feels pressed to have information to share. But there is another way to think about conversation, one that is less about information and more about creating a space to be explored. Sallie McKenna, another commenter on my essay, tried to capture it by describing the importance of the “spaces between things” and how important it is to not consider them boring. For McKenna, those spaces are “where creativity is nurtured, where processing and connections happen, where noticing and sensing and calming can be.” According to this view, when you are engaged in talk, you are interested in hearing how another person approaches things — her opinions and associations. In this kind of conversation — I think of it as “whole person conversation” — if things go quiet for a while you look deeper, you don’t text another friend. You take the moment to read your friend more closely or look at something you haven’t attended to before. Perhaps you look into her face or pay attention to her
body language. Or you simply allow the silence. Maybe when we talk about conversations being “boring,” such a frequent complaint, we are saying how uncomfortable we are with stillness. We may categorize it, as Middleton did, as “dull and pedestrian,” but we now always have at hand a world of constant stimulation. The transactional and performative view of conversation has taken hold not only in social life but also in higher education. Though one goal of visiting a professor during office hours is certainly transactional — to increase your knowledge and improve your grade — the other is to visit someone who is making an effort to understand you and how you think. And a visit to a professor holds the possibility of giving a student the feeling of adult support and commitment. But students say they don’t come to office hours because they are afraid of being too dull. They tell me they prefer to email professors because only with the time delay and the possibility of editing can they best explain their work. My students suggest that an email from them will put me in the best position to improve their ideas. They cast our meeting in purely transactional terms, judging that the online transaction will yield better results than a face-to-face meeting. Zvi, a college junior who doesn’t like to see his professors in person but prefers to email, used transactional language to describe what he might get out of office hours: He has ideas; the professors have information that will improve them. In the end, Zvi walked back his position and admitted that he stays away from professors because he doesn’t feel grown-up enough to talk to them. His professors might be able to help him with this, but not because they’ll give him information. Studies of mentoring show that what makes a difference, what can change the life of a student, is the presence of a strong figure who shows an interest, who, as a student might say, “gets me.” You need face-to-face conversation for that.

Lhüsaku gets into difficult situations but he gets out of them with an adroitness that is the characteristic of the trickster. The trickster in folktales is often depicted as a wicked character. But there are qualities in the trickster that are admi-

The trickster has his own followers: Tom Sawyer’s friends help him paint his aunt’s fence thereby alleviating the punishment he had gotten. At just seven years, Lhüsaku is too young to get up to the tricks that Tom Saw-

Lhüsaku is a children’s story and appears at first glance as an entertaining naughty boy’s book of adventures. And who does not like that? We have all been there too. But on closer look, it poses the question, do we have room in our strictly conformist society for a person who dares to think differently? The Lhüsakus of this world are often
suppressed by parents or teachers or even their own age-mates because they are too different from the rest of the crowd. They don’t receive the understanding they need to bring out their particular genius. Perhaps we are losing out on many bright minds that could have taken society many steps forward if given the right environment. Could this be the question that the author is posing in this seemingly innocuous tale of a mischief-loving boy who uses his brains differently from the others? The pencil sketches by Agnes’ husband Seyie Tepa go very well with the book. They are a delightful visual accompaniment to the tales. In the book, there are sentences that could have done with a little more editing, but they do not really interfere with the narrative as a whole. One hopes Agnes Tepa is not done with her little hero. A new series of Lhüsaku adventures would be a welcome addition to our sparse Naga children’s literature.

“Clean Nagaland, The reality before us!” Rokovizo Kuotsu Angami Naga: When you look around the town, the most common sight we see nowadays are small packet of pan masala, disposable plastic bottle, plastic packet of chips and other edibles. Unfortunately, these wrappers are thrown carelessly everywhere. Chewing tamul and pan is a favourite amongst the old and young, but with the lack of civic sense, random spitting is observed at every turn, especially government office, hospital and other public place. A habit or skill that has been picked by drivers, who cautiously open their door (mind you while on the road) to spit openly. Another common sighting is rubbing of lime. In Kohima, even an electrical post is not spared! This obviously reflects on us as a society that no matter how educated we consider ourselves, we still lack the basic etiquette skill. Random dumping of garbage is another sense. It’s very sad to see that majority of us do not respect our mother nature. Cleanliness, etiquette skills and common sense are however confined only to our homes! We tend to forget all our values once outside. Krocha Nk: You brought a very interesting topic which needs serious introspection. I've been outside the state over a decade, came across lots of acquaintance who chew tobacco, uses pan, or drinks but have not come across anywhere people succumbs to these habits. Nagas let these habits become their masters. It is a pity we don't value our beauty, go anywhere, from washrooms, playgrounds, public gallery's, every corner of schools, colleges, every public monuments are fully decorated with the stains of pan or tamul. Worse, don't spit here will attract the most colors. We all blame the government for all our problems that arise, while we cannot keep our schools, colleges and offices clean. We have a long way to go to become a world class city. Rokovizo Kuotsu Angami Naga: There are several cases where human plays an important role in polluting nature, but I have listed only a few unique ways here. Then and now: The evident contrast in the respect given to age old monument, public galleries, educational institutional and every public places, in a respectable moment of being in clean, a closer inspection would highlight the worst happening of lime and pan, tamul, gutka stains adorning everywhere. Reviving and preserving our towns, culture and history is one way to keep our identity alive and this could be done in various ways either through music, poems or even through the above listed. No doubt, we are progressing in the field of poems and music. However, it is sad to know that one has to strain his/her eyes to get a clear look of what is happening. Civic sense is such a big and difficult thing for our people of the state to uphold. I agree with you, we still have a long way to go to become a world class city. Dumping sites would vary from locality to locality. Some would include the street whether the locality, or drains from which sometimes old tyres or even old sofa have been fished out to clear the clogging drains. Majority they don't care as long as their house is spick and span, dump the garbage wherever it is convenient. The consequences of these actions are always on display in TCP gate, New Market, BOC and Razhü Point every morning you take a jogging.
“RISING PANACEA” Inoto Yeptho: Our Society at present is contaminated and depraved with Low morality. There is huge prevalence of unemployment, corruption, poverty, wars, chaos, conflicts and problems after problems everywhere without any remedy. Our Social, economic and political integrity is not firmly intact. Our Sovereign inalienable rights are deprived, disregarded, contempt, denied and nor is it justified. There are no norms or values for Love, honesty, self-discipline, hospitality, equality, cooperation and law and justice are just mere obsolete words from dictionary. Corruptions and problems are intensively exposed but we common people are all vulnerable because our Leaders and representatives deny the very existence and principles for a righteous life, which is the sole substance for a society. The rich are getting richer day by day while the poor ones are degrading in social positions, retrieving and striving for a single meal. Our Leaders and representatives are poisoning and contaminating the consciousness of our youth and the society, forcing us to believe truth based on lies. We are but surviving and not living without any absolute uniformity, placed in our hands the defiled ways to adapt their vicious Ways. Our society is falling apart; its immune systems are not responding and functioning properly. Are we all created and designed to live in a society of injustice which is rooted in nothing else but lies. Or are we all created for the right purpose to live a just life and not just survive. As a being of power, love and intelligence we humans are the sole administrators, the witness Leaders and reformers of our entire society and we contain in ourselves the true master key (will) for every circumstance. And our time here on earth is a wonderful yet responsible gift from God who had entrusted this whole world to our legitimate care and management. The world is praying and craving for every individual to stand up for their causes to proclaim their rightful place in a just society. Yes, indeed the world needs brilliant dreamers, but what the world needs even more are every single person, as they will unimaginable infinite power to reshape the courses and structure of our entire Society. So my question to every one of you is, do we have to ask ourselves what our society truly wants? Or do ask our society what it truly needs? As the new rising Modern Domain over our society our basic principles, values and purpose in life should be towards the upliftment of our society as a whole - economy as our goal and politics as our vibrant tool to reshape every life to bring forth thousand joys and happiness. We are the solution of a new modern world the remedy which our society had long been dreaming and wishing. Every individual should and must dedicate the worth of their life by contributing to every small basic change and overall those basic small changes will lead up to a big new transformation. But who is to be held responsible if we fail? "All that we achieve and all that we fail to achieve are the direct results of our own thoughts." As our every acts and values are inclined to strike the chords that shall vibrate in the coming days and our perspectives shall also influence what we invest for our society and ourselves, so our rational decisions right now will determine the true measure and hope for a better tomorrow. "Optimism is the faith which leads to achievement, and nothing can be done without hope." Achievements either in the social intellectual world, economic business world or political just world are the definite results and offsprings of our strong will determination and rational thoughts. The fate of our society lies in the hands of every one of us. As one in spirit and in truth we can hew a way to a new modern society, where justice will be served to every home. Leaders of tomorrow let’s be the change and blend the natural forces to our advantage. Our fair virtues shall power our transforming will, the force unseen and our regenerative dedications shall shape the starting foundation for a new life and a new modern society. In conclusion I, Inoto Yeptho proudly proclaim with firm believe and positivity that we are the "RISING PANACEA" the remedy for a new modern world. And "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."(Philippians 4:13) Ally your thoughts with boldness and positivity and as you dream and aspire, so shall you achieve. You will amass great power the moment you start living in your higher nature. THE MORUNG EXPRESS
'Don't need 4 points, We need only one - end terror' United nations, october 2 (Pti): Rejecting Nawaz Sharif's 4-point formula for peace, India today said Pakistan needs to address "just one" issue of ending cross-border terror for the dialogue to start on all outstanding matters as it proposed NSA-level talks to discuss the matter. Addressing the UN General Assembly, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also raised the issue of 26/11 attacks masterminds roaming freely as also the "illegal occupation" of parts of Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistan, a day after Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif raked up Kashmir issue here. Asserting that "none of us can accept that terrorism is a legitimate instrument of statecraft," she pressed the world community to show zero tolerance towards it and ensure that countries which provide finances, safe havens and arms to terrorists "pay a heavy price" for it. "Talks and terror cannot go together", she said while making it clear that India "remains open to dialogue" but terrorism emanating from Pakistan is hampering normalisation of bilateral relations. "Yesterday the Prime Minister of Pakistan proposed what he termed as a four-point new peace initiative. I would like to respond. We do not need four points, we need just one - give up terrorism and let us sit down and talk," Swaraj said in her 25-minute speech before the 193-member body.
She said the Prime Ministers of the two countries had decided precisely the same during the last meeting in Ufa in Russia in July. Sharif had yesterday mooted a 4-point "peace initiative" with India -- demilitarisation of Kashmir, "unconditional and mutual withdrawal" of forces from Siachen, restraint by both countries from "use or the threat of use of force under any circumstances" and formalisation of the 2003 border ceasefire. "Let us hold talks at the level of NSAs on all issues connected to terrorism and an early meeting of our Directors General of Military Operations to address the situation on the border," she said, adding "If the response is serious and credible, India is prepared to address all outstanding issues through a bilateral dialogue." Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sharif, during a meeting in Ufa in July, had agreed to hold NSA-level talks to discuss terror but these were cancelled at the last minute in August when Pakistan insisted on changing the agenda. Sharing the challenges that India faces in its ties with Pakistan, Swaraj said "None of us can accept that terrorism is a legitimate instrument of statecraft." In this context, she referred to the 26/11 carnage which was sponsored and controlled from Pakistan as also the latest attack in Udhampur in Jammu where a Pakistani terrorist was caught alive. "The world shared our out-

rage at the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in which citizens of many nations were helplessly butchered," Swaraj said, adding that it was an "affront to the entire international community" that the mastermind behind the attack is walking free in Pakistan. This was a reference to LeT commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, who is roaming freely in Pakistan despite India giving it loads of evidence about his involvement in the attacks. "Not only have past assurances in this regard not been honoured (by Pakistan) but new cross-border terrorist attacks have taken place recently, in which two terrorists from across the border have also been captured alive," Swaraj said. One of the terrorists was caught alive during attack on BSF convoy in Udhampur in Jammu
and Kashmir. "We all know that these attacks are meant to destabilize India and legitimize Pakistan's illegal occupation of parts of the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir and its claim on the rest of it," the Indian minister said. She said India has lived with the threat of terror for more than a quarter of a century and it was "tragically brought home to this very city" (New York) in the autumn of 2001, a clear reference to the 9/11 attacks. Swarj emphasised that international terrorism can only be defeated by organized international action and asked the world must demonstrate that it has zero tolerance for terrorists who kill and maim innocent civilians with action based on the principle of prosecute or extradite. "Member states must undertake their obligations to inves-
tigate and prosecute those who are alleged to have supported terrorism," the External Affairs Minister said. At the same time, she asserted that an international legal regime, under the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT), "can no longer be held up, nor can we be held hostage by seeking to define terrorism when the General Assembly in 2006 adopted the Global Counter Terrorism Strategy unanimously." Targeting the UN on its 70th anniversary, she said it "appears as an ineffective institution" when gauged on the parameters of whether it has been able to prevent conflicts, managed to find permanent solution to these conflicts or showing the path of peace to the world which is going the way of violence.
Security Council reform essential to preserve legitimacy of the UN
United nations, october 2 (ians): Reforming the Security Council is the need of the hour if the UN is to preserve its legitimacy, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Thursday, pointing out that it still had the vestiges of the colonial era of 1945. Calling the Security Council "a system built for a world that no longer exists" Swaraj said: "We have to include more developing nations in the decision making structures of the Security Council. And we need to change the way it does business by doing away with outdated and non-transparent working methods." Addressing the General Assembly in Hindi, Swaraj said: "In a world that continues to be dominated by wealthy and influential nations, the notion of sovereign equality of the UN has permitted the developing world to question some unfair norms. But it has not permitted a fundamental challenge to the inequity of a system built for a world that longer exists." "Imparting more legitimacy and balance to the Council would restore its credibility and equip it to confront the challenges of our times," she said. Unlike Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who made an open plea for Japan being made a permanent member, Swaraj did not mention India and presented the reform in more universal terms appealing to African and Latin American countries. "How can we have a Security Council in 2015 which still reflects the geo-political architecture of 1945? How can we have a Security Council which still does not give place as a permanent member to Africa and Latin America?" she asked. "India was one of the countries which signed the Charter although we were not independent at that time. We got our independence two years later." With colonialism still dominating the world, the UN was founded with 51 members and the five victorious powers from World War II were given permanent seats with veto powers. The UN now has 193 members, the vast majority of whom are from the developed world. Except for adding four non-permanent seats in 1965, the basic structure of the Security Council has remained the same. Swaraj complimented Ugandan Foreign Minister Sam Kutesa, the president of the last session of the General Assembly, and Jamaican Ambassador Courtnay Rattray for their role in achieving a breakthrough in reforms.
Pak gives Ban dossier on Indian 'interference', Kashmir spat on at UNGA Man carries firearm into metro station, not our fault, says CISF
United nations, octo ber 2 (ians): Dossiers about alleged Indian "interference" in Pakistan have been handed to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Pakistan's National Security Adviser Sartaj Aziz said on Thursday as the Kashmir controversy spilled into the second day at the General Assembly. The dossiers were handed over to Ban by Pakistan's Permanent Representative Maleeha Lodhi, Aziz told reporters here, asserting the dossiers related to, what he said, were India's "interference" in Balochistan, Federally Administered
Tribal Areas (Fata) and Karachi. Pakistani media reported that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had told reporters Wednesday that he wanted to personally hand over the dossiers to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi if he had had an opportunity to meet him. Their contact was restricted to a wave at a meeting on peacekeeping convened by US President Barack Obama on Monday. Aziz said that Pakistan had spoken to foreign ministers of 15 countries about what he said were India's ceasefire violations along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, India-Pakistan exchanges at the General Assembly continued for a second day Thursday. Exercising its right of reply to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's address accusing Pakistan of carrying out cross-border terrorist attacks and allowing the 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind to operate freely, a Pakistani diplomat told the General Assembly on Thursday that India was using the "terrorism bogey" to prolong the the Kashmir conflict. He said that India should implement a Security Council resolution that wanted a plebiscite in
Kashmir and that it would be at the top of the list in any discussions with India. India however maintains that a plebiscite was no longer relevant because the Kashmiri people had voted through elections for being a part of India. The diplomat cited claims by human rights organisations that 6,000 mass graves had been found in Kashmir and said the Indian troops should be withdrawn from there. He claimed that India did not condemn terrorism in Pakistan, which he said India considered acceptable.

neW deLHi, october 2 (ians): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati here in connection with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam. Sources said a team of CBI sleuths questioned Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati for over two hours at her residence in Central Delhi in connection with embezzlement of funds in implementation of the health mission. Mayawati was at the helm of affairs in Uttar Pradesh from 2007 to 2012 when the scam occurred. "Mayawati was questioned here in connection with the NRHM scam of about Rs.10,000 crore," said sources, adding that the agency had summoned Mayawati last month. "Mayawati was asked to clarify the funding of some projects under NRHM in which some top officials, including the then Principal Secretary, Health, Pradeep Shukla has been charged by the agency," sources said. Many politicians, government officials and private people were involved in the scam. Babu Singh Kushwaha, a former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister during the BSP rule, was arrested on March 3, 2012 and is still languishing in jail. Kushwaha recently moved the apex court seeking bail but his plea was dismissed on February 13, with the court saying the allegations against him were very serious and it was a "good case for dismissal". The agency had filed 74 cases related to the scam and has filed chargesheets in 48 cases. As many as six people had died or were allegedly murdered in an attempt to cover up the large-scale irregularities in the case. The issue of financial irregularities in NRHM funds came to light when the murders of two chief medical officers of family welfare -- V. K. Arya in 2010 and B.P. Singh in 2011 - surfaced and deputy chief medical officer Y.S. Sachan was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the district jail of Lucknow. The NRHM funds, to the tune of about Rs.10,000 crore, were allocated to Uttar Pradesh for 2005 to 2011 by the union health ministry. The funds were spent through 72 chief medical officers in Uttar Pradesh and other nodal offices across the state under the various schemes approved by the central government involving a large number of beneficiaries. A number of these works have been executed through several state PSUs and a large number of contractors and firms. The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court in 2011 directed the CBI to probe the murder of Sachan and investigate the irregularities in implementation of the NRHM. A Special Investigation Team comprising 26 investigating officers including five superintendents of police under the overall supervision of additional director, joint director and two DIGs are probing the scam. The investigation team is also assisted by experts from banking, accountancy, engineering works and computer forensics and officers dealing with the NRHM scheme in the union health ministry.
Minister Narendra Modi today said he is "too arrogant" to be trusted with governance and asked people to back development agenda of BJP to change the state's fortunes. Addressing his first public rally after announcement of assembly polls, Modi wooed the youth and the poor promising to address the issue of migration for employment and told them that the solution to all their problems lie in development. The Prime Minister also took a dig at his rivals for doubting the delivery of the financial package for Bihar announced by him. "Some people are raising questions on the Rs 1.65 lakh crore package announced by me. They are asking whether it will come or not. Should a single rupee be given to the present government. Will it reach you? "Even if I give it, his (Nitish's) arrogance is so much that he may even return it. I am worried that even if I give the Rs 1.65 lakh crore to the state, he will announce that he does not require this money as it has been
returned the Rs 5 crore relief announced by Gujarat for the flood-affected in Kosi. The Prime Minister also asked former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, who shared the dais with him, whether he can trust Kumar after he ousted him from the top job in the state some months after having appointed him. "Nobody can trust him after what he did to Jitan Ram Manjhi. People of Bihar cannot trust him," Modi said. He also countered the attack of his rivals on his announcement of a huge package for Bihar, saying he was not doing any favour to Bihar as has been alleged. "The government in Delhi is not doing any favour to anyone. This is the right of Bihar and its people, which I am trying to provide unlike in the past. I am fulfilling the responsibility entrusted to me," he said, adding, "This is not Modi's money, it belongs to Bihar and its people". Holding that Bihar has seen all kinds of 'isms' like fuedalism, capitalism, separatism and dynastyism, he said,
neW deLHi, october 2 (ians): A man managed to smuggle in a firearm into Rajiv Chowk metro station and shot at himself at an extremely busy spot -under the nose of 110 closed circuit television cameras and at least 20 security personnel. The CISF that is in charge of security within the station, however, chose to pass the buck calling the security breach on Thursday a "structural fault". "It was not the breach in CISF security. It is the fault of the structural set-up. The man has taken its advantage," Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) spokesperson Hemendra Singh told IANS. Rajiv Chowk metro station is considered to be the centre of New Delhi's high security zone and gets a footfall of almost five lakh per day. Shibesh Kumar Pal, 22, a resident of Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, entered the metro rail system from Chandni Chowk station around 6.35 p, m. on Thursday and travelled to Rajiv Chowk where he shot himself on the extremely busy foot overbridge connecting to the platforms. "Pal's sister Geeta, 25, had passed him a bag over a three-and-a-half feet glass partition fixed next to the customer service counter where no CISF personnel were deployed. Pal was carrying the locally made pistol in the bag," Singh said. Singh said the CISF had monitored the CCTV footage in which Pal was seen crossing the frisking area without a bag. Without blaming metro officials, Singh said the CCTV footage clearly shows that a metro guard was present near the partition glass but he was looking towards the public when the bag carrying a countrymade gun was passed to Pal by his sister. Both Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Delhi Police chose to steer clear of the controversy and refused to comment on the issue. "After passing the bag to Pal, Geeta
crossed the frisking area. She then boarded a metro train with her brother and travelled ahead to Jasola metro station. However, Pal got down at Rajiv Chowk metro station and shot himself at about 9.25 p.m.," Singh told IANS. The CCTV footage shows that Pal had entered Chandni Chowk metro station from Gate number 3. Delhi Metro officials refused to comment on the issue, saying they had "no role in law and order issues" and it was the responsibility of CISF and police. Delhi Police, however, said they handle law and order cases in the metro system, but security was under the CISF. "Just after the incident our team reached the spot. We have taken Pal in our custody and are investigating the case after filing a case under the Arms Act and Breach of security Act. But we are not responsible for internal security. It's the responsibility of the CISF," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Jitender Mani told IANS. Mani said Pal, who arrived in Delhi a few days ago, was continuously changing his statement to police and did not give any satisfactory information about what prompted his extreme step. "First Pal said his father's illness was the reason behind his extreme step," Mani said. "In another statement, he informed that he had got information on September 28 that there would be a terrorist attack on Delhi Metro. He tried to inform the police several times, but no one received his phone call. So he was upset," the official said. The official said Pal's second statement bore no relation to his suicide attempt. Pal's father, Girdhari, is recouping at the Apollo hospital after a bypass procedure. About 5,000 CISF personnel are deployed at 180 stations of the Metro network that carries 25 lakh commuters daily.
Akhilesh targets PM, dares him to ban beef exports neW deLHi, october 2 (Pti): Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said on Friday that those who spoke against the “pink revolution” should ban beef exports as they were now in power, and alleged that they wanted to disturb the “secular” ethos of the country by raising such issues. Yadav was speaking in the aftermath of lynching of Mohammad Ikhlaq in Dadri after villagers accused him and his family of consuming beef, an incident which has caused nation-wide outrage. Yadav stressed that “our religion and our country” allow people to live the way they want to, and respect and protect their rights. “A rumour does not have anything in it but a lot can happen because of it. Our Constitution is based on secularism. Our schemes are all based on this principle but some forces want
Bigger conspiracy behind killing: Lynch victim's wife Greater noida, october 2 (ians): The killing of a man in a village here following rumours that his family consumed beef was part of a bigger conspiracy with two right-wing organisations operating in the area to spread communal disharmony, his widow said on Friday. A mob beat to death 50-yearold Akhlaq and critically injured his 21-year-old son Danish in Bisara village in Greater Noida on Monday night. Ikram told IANS that while her husband was returning home on Eid, some young boys
taunted him as a "Pakistani" and said they would not allow a Pakistani to live in this village and will repeat a Muzaffarnagar style incident, referring to the communal riots in western Uttar Pradesh in September 2013. "And suddenly on Monday midnight, goons barged into our house and lynched Akhlaq, accusing him of sacrificing a cow. Our family is a patriotic family... our elder son is working with the Indian Air Force while second son Danish, who is completing his graduation this year, is inclined to join the
Army," she said. Intelligence sources revealed that some activists of the Pratap Sena and Samadhan Sena were operating in the area to woo youth in the age group of 18 to 25 years and also disturbing communal harmony. Circle Officer, Dadri, Anurag Singh said that some oral information regarding the Pratap Sena and Samadhan Sena has come from the public. "No authentic information about these organisations creating trouble came in black and white," he added.
to vitiate the atmosphere.” “They want to rake up such issues. These forces talked about pink revolution. We will say today - you are in government now, so ban beef exports. You should build support for banning their
export,” Yadav said in an apparent reference to Modi, who had in the run-up to last Lok Sabha elections attacked the then UPA government over meat exports, saying it was encouraging a “pink revolution”.
Without naming Modi, Yadav said that those who are marketing the country abroad should consider what kind of food is eaten by the people there. “The world where you are roaming, marketing and pro-
moting your country, just think once what kind of food they eat from dawn to dusk. That’s why we should not interfere in each other’s way of life,” he said at a function in Lucknow. A blame game has erupted between BJP and ruling SP in the state over the killing of the 50-year-old Mohammad Ikhlaq allegedly because he and his family had eaten beef. Ikhlaq was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son Danish was critically injured by a 200-strong mob which barged into their house on Monday night following rumours that the family had consumed beef. Cow slaughter is banned in Uttar Pradesh. Samajwadi Party has accused BJP of deliberately inciting violence ahead of 2017 assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh as part of efforts to polarise people while BJP has termed it a failure of the state government to maintain law and order.

Community college shooting leaves 10 dead Angry Barack Obama blasts US gun politics

ROSEBURG, OctOBER 2 (REUtERS): A gunman stalked onto a college campus in southwestern Oregon on Thursday and opened fire, killing nine people and wounding seven before police shot him to death, authorities said, in yet another burst of U.S. gun violence that ranked as the deadliest this year. The suspect, who witnesses say fired dozens of shots into a classroom full of screaming students, was slain in an exchange of gunfire with two police officers in Snyder Hall at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg following the morning rampage. He was not publicly identified by local authorities - the county sheriff vowed never to utter his name. But CBS, CNN, NBC and the New York Times named him as 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer, citing anonymous law enforcement sources. “He
appears to be an angry young man who was very filled with hate,” the Times quoted one law enforcement official as saying. CNN reported that three handguns and a “long gun” belonging to him were recovered from the scene. According to published eyewitness accounts, the gunman at one point ordered cowering students to stand up and state their religion before spraying the classroom with bullets. “The law enforcement investigation into the shooter and his motivations is continuing,” Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin told reporters at an afternoon news conference. He also said three of the wounded victims were hospitalized in critical condition. The massacre in Roseburg, a former timber town on the western edge of the Cascades some 260 miles (418 km) south of Portland, was the latest
WASHINGtON, OctOBER 2 (REUtERS): President Barack Obama angrily said on Thursday America had made a “political choice” to allow mass shootings like the one in Oregon to occur and blasted the National Rifle Association (NRA)lobby group for blocking reform of U.S. gun laws. Appearing in the White House briefing room with a grim expression and a frustrated tone, Obama challenged U.S. voters of all political stripes to hold their leaders accountable if they wanted to prevent such tragedies from happening again. “This is a political choice that we make, to allow this to happen every few months in America,” Obama told reporters after the latest shooting at a community college in an Oregon town in which nine people were killed before police fatally shot the gunman. “We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction,” he said. Obama, a Democrat, visited the town for a campaign stop during his first run
in a flurry of deadly mass shootings at American college and public school campuses, movie theaters, military bases and churches in recent years. The 10 people killed surpassed the death tolls from two previous mass shootings - a gun battle between rival motorcycle gangs in Waco, Texas, in May, and the rampage of a gunman at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, each of which claimed nine lives - to mark the deadliest incident of gun violence in the United States this year. Not counting Thursday’s carnage, a total of 293 mass shootings have been reported since January 2015, according to the Mass Shooting Tracker website, a crowd-sourced database kept by anti-gun activists that defines a mass shooting as any event in which four or more people are shot. The killings have fueled demands
for more gun control in the United States, where ownership of firearms is protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and better care for the mentally ill. Gunshots And Screams Kortney Moore, 18, told the local News Review newspaper that she was in her writing class in Snyder Hall when a gunshot came through the window and struck her teacher in the head. Inside the classroom, Moore said, the gunman told people to get on the ground, then asked them to stand up and state their religion before he started shooting. Freshman Kenny Ungerman told NBC that said he saw the shooter, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, carrying a handgun as he went into the building, followed by gunshots and screams. Climate plans by 140 nations mark US military plane crashes progress, but not enough - experts in Afghanistan, killing 11 OSLO, OctOBER 2 (REUtERS): Plans submitted by 140 nations to limit their greenhouse gases would go some way towards tackling climate change, but not enough to prevent the planet from warming by well over 2ºC compared to pre-industrial times, experts say. The plans by countries from Albania to Zimbabwe, led by top emitters China and the United States, were submitted by an informal United Nations deadline on Thursday as building blocks towards a climate accord that negotiators will try to clinch at a summit in Paris in December. A Climate Action Tracker (CAT) by four European research groups projected the plans, if implemented, would limit average temperature rises to 2.7ºC(4.9ºF) above preindustrial times by 2100, down from 3.1ºC (5.6ºF) estimated last December. That is still clearly above the 2ºC (3.6ºF) level that governments have accepted as the threshold beyond which the Earth would face danger-
ous changes including more droughts, extinctions, floods and rising seas, which could swamp coastal regions and entire island nations. “We’re below three degrees for the first time,” Bill Hare of Climate Analytics, which is part of CAT, told Reuters. “We’re obviously far from where we need to be, but this is a signal that the process can work.” He said the main contributor was Beijing’s plan, issued in June, to get emissions from burning coal, oil and natural gas to peak by around 2030. A top priority for the Paris talks, six years after the failure of a previous summit in Copenhagen, will be to find ways to toughen the plans in order to meet the 2ºC target. “What the negotiations are looking to do is build not just that first step but the entire staircase,” said Taryn Fransen, of the World Resources Institute think-tank. Experts said the wide participation was welcome. “It takes away one of the possible stumbling blocks for Paris,” said Frank Melum, a senior
analyst at Thomson Reuters Point Carbon. He said every emitter accounting for more than one percent of global emissions met the Oct 1. deadline except India, Iran and Saudi Arabia, which is fearful of a shift from fossil fuels. Together the plans cover almost 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The U.N. Climate Change Secretariat says it will add up them all up in coming weeks to estimate their effect in slowing climate change. It has privately told countries that they have a few days’ leeway. India, the biggest emitter yet to submit, plans to outline its plan for action on Friday to coincide with the birthday of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi. Earlier this week, Climate Interactive, a not-for-profit group in Washington, using different assumptions from CAT, projected the national plans would curb temperature rises to 3.5ºC (6.3ºF), compared with 4.5ºC (8.1ºF) if no action was taken.
for the White House in 2008. There have been more than a dozen mass shootings in America since he took office. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden made a concerted push for broad gun control reforms after the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting of young children that shocked the country, but were unsuccessful. Obama has blamed the NRA for that failure, which he has called one of the biggest frustrations of his time in office. Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike offered thoughts and prayers for the victims and family members of the Oregon massacre on Thursday, but a visibly upset Obama said that was not enough. “Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine,” he said. “We’ve become numb to this.” Nodding to the arguments that such shootings are often committed by the mentally ill, Obama said it was clear that anyone who commits such crimes had a
WASHINGtON, OctOBER 2 (REUtERS): A U.S. military transport plane crashed at an airfield in Afghanistan shortly after midnight on Friday (1930 GMT on Thursday), killing all 11 people on board, the U.S. military said, describing the crash as an accident. The cause of the crash at Jalalabad airfield was under investigation, a spokesman said, refusing to rule out the possibility that there may be dead or wounded on the ground. First responders were on the scene, he said. Six U.S. military service members and five civilian contractors who were employed by the U.S.-led international force in Afghanistan were killed in the crash. A spokesman for the Taliban militant movement seeking to topple the government said its fighters had shot down the aircraft, but the U.S. military said there were no reports of enemy fire at the time. A statement from the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram Airfield described it as “an accident,” without offering details. The crash came hours after Afghan troops recaptured the centre of the strategic northern city of Kunduz on Thursday amid fierce clashes with Taliban militants, three days after losing the provincial capital. The Taliban have been fighting to regain power since being toppled by a U.S.-led intervention in 2001. The number of U.S. deaths in Afghanistan has fallen sharply after the United States wrapped up its formal combat mission last year, although U.S. special forces and U.S. airstrikes were involved in this week’s counter-offensive in Kunduz.
“sickness in their minds.” “But we are not the only country on Earth who has people with mental illnesses who want to do harm to other people,” he said. “We are the only advanced country on Earth who sees these kinds of mass shootings every few months.” The president referenced shootings in Australia and Britain that led to reforms that largely stopped such massacres there. The U.S. Constitution guarantees Americans the right to bear arms, a cherished freedom that has great resonance with many voters. Obama, however, said it did not make sense to argue that the Constitution prevented sensible reforms. Obama exhorted gun owners to question whether the gun lobby represented their views. He did not mention the NRA by name, but his comments were clearly directed at that group, which has broad political influence in Washington. A spokesman for the NRA declined comment, saying it was the group’s policy “not to comment until all the facts are known.”
told CNN that she heard 35 to 40 shots. Student Brady Winder, in a posting on Facebook, said he was in a classroom next door to the room where the shooting began and ran, along with his classmates, when they heard the gunfire. “I ran to the edge of the campus, down a hill and waited. From talking with a student in the classroom where it happen, almost every person in the room was shot by a man with four guns,” Winder, 23, wrote. PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center emergency room doctor Hans Notenboom told reporters three women about 18 to 34 years of age were flown to the hospital in Riverbend by helicopter, and two were moved directly into operating room. Survivors were transported to a local fairgrounds, and some family members were left waiting for hours to
see if their loved ones would be among them. “We have grief counselors waiting for those parents who have no children getting off that bus,” said the college’s president, Rita Calvin. Following the bloodshed state and federal authorities swarmed Roseburg, including agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Police descended on an apartment possibly linked to the suspect about 2 miles (3 km) from campus, where police tape prevented access. It was not immediately clear who lived in the residence. The college, which began its fall term this week and serves more than 13,000 students - 3,000 of them full time - said it would be closed until Monday. Hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil at nightfall.
High-quality carbs may lower heart disease risk Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats and highquality carbohydrates has the most impact on reducing the risk of heart disease NEW YORk, OctOBER 2 (IANS): Eliminating saturated fats can improve the health of the heart, but what you replace them with makes all the difference, says a study. Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats and high-quality carbohydrates has the most impact on reducing the risk of heart disease, according to the study. When saturated fats were replaced with highly processed foods, there was no benefit, the study found. “We found that when study participants consumed less saturated fats, they were replacing them with low-quality carbohydrates such as refined grains that are not beneficial to preventing heart disease,” said study author professor Frank B. Hu from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “Our findings suggest that when patients are making lifestyle changes to their diets, cardiologists should encourage the consumption of unsaturated fats
like vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds, as well as healthy carbohydrates such as whole grains,” Hu said. For this study, researchers followed 84,628 women and 42,908 men who were free of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer and documented 7,667 incidents of coronary heart disease. Researchers noted that participants generally replaced calories from saturated fatty acids with calories from lowquality carbohydrates -- such as white bread or potatoes -- rather than calories from unsaturated fats found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds or high-quality carbohydrates like those in whole grains. Replacing 5 percent of energy intake from saturated fats with an equivalent intake from either polyunsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats, or carbohydrates from whole grains was associated with 25 percent, 15 percent, and 9 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease, respectively. However, replacing 5 percent of energy intake from saturated fats with carbohydrates from refined starches or sugars was not associated with either increased or decreased risk of coronary heart disease. The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Myanmar: Rakhine party looming threat to minority SIttWE, OctOBER 2 (REUtERS): Myanmar’s historic elections next month are likely to worsen the plight of the country’s oppressed Rohingya Muslim community, with a new, hardline Buddhist party on the brink of becoming a formidable force The empowerment of ethnic nationalists in Rakhine State at the western edge of the Southeast Asian nation could intensify discrimination of the stateless Rohingya, thousands of whom have fled in recent years to neighbouring countries. The government has barred most Rohingyas from both voting and registering as candidates, drawing sharp criticism from the United Nations and undermining Myanmar’s efforts to portray the Nov. 8 poll as its first free and fair election in 25 years. The Arakan National Party (ANP), an organisation of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, was formed last year. It lob-
bied hard to disenfranchise Myanmar’s ‘temporary citizens,’ including most of the one million Rohingya living in apartheid-like conditions in Rakhine and maintains that they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, despite many living in Myanmar for generations. “This is ANP, we see, we come, we conquer,” says a sign on a whiteboard at ANP’s headquarters in the state capital, Sittwe. The party is handing out leaflets saying: “Love your nationality, keep pure blood, be Rakhine and vote ANP”. Rohingya make up about one-third of Rakhine’s population and many are virtual prisoners in camps or in segregated villages, subject to restrictions on travel and, in some areas, access to healthcare and education. “For the constituencies where there were many white card holders, we now have a better chance to win,” said Aye Nu Sein, the ANP’s vice-chairwoman,
referring to the now-nullified identification cards issued to ‘temporary citizens’ under the previous military regime. The ANP would like to see the Rohingya moved into camps or deported, she said. “We don’t accept the term ‘stateless’ being used by the international community. They came from Bangladesh, they have the same religion, race, perceptions and traditions as people in Bangladesh,” she said. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced disgust. “I am deeply disappointed by this effective disenfranchisement of the Rohingya and other minority communities,” he said last month. “Barring incumbent Rohingya parliamentarians from standing for re-election is particularly egregious.” In the 2010 election, three out of 29 representatives elected to the national parliament from Rakhine were Rohingya. Two Ro-
hingya lawmakers were also chosen to be among the 35 elected members of the Rakhine regional assembly that year. CLEAN SWEEP But this year it may well be a near-clean sweep for the ANP. The party is contesting all but one of the 64 seats in the national and regional Rakhine races. It is also running candidates in 14 seats outside the state. One of its aims is to win the powerful post of chief minister of Rakhine. “If the ANP wins the expected landslide, they will claim a strong mandate to secure the chief minister position and pursue their political agenda - including, potentially, further restrictions on the Muslim population,” said Richard Horsey, an independent political analyst in Yangon. “The ANP would also have a somewhat stronger voice than they do now in national politics, and would form part of a Buddhist-
conservative bloc in the new parliament,” Horsey said. However, the Rakhines have a fraught relationship with Myanmar’s Bamar majority as well. Although the Bamar are also predominantly Buddhist, Rakhines claim their region has been neglected for decades. Both of Myanmar’s national parties, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) of Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, are predominantly Bamar. Suu Kyi is planning a trip to Rakhine in mid-October, but she will not talk about the Rohingya or citizenship issues, Win Htein, a senior member of the NLD, told Reuters. “If we do so, they would attack us. We’ll just say: ‘vote NLD’,” he said. He added that the Rakhine people had become “super patriots” and conceded that the NLD faced an uphill battle against the ANP in most of the state’s constituencies,

where the NLD is seen as pro-Muslim and sympathetic to the Rohingya. The ruling USDP, which is viewed in Rakhine as unconcerned with development in one of the country’s poorest states, also faces long odds except in a few areas that have abundant military populations, experts say.
The ANP’s popularity has been fed by a tide of anti-Muslim sentiment that surfaced after reforms started in 2011, erupting into communal violence in 2012. At least 200 were killed and more than 140,000, mainly Rohingya, were displaced in fighting between Muslims and
Buddhists in Rakhine. Rakhine Buddhists say they have little doubt who will come to power. “ANP is the strongest party in Rakhine state,” said Kyaw Lwin, a shop owner in Sittwe. “No matter how they (other parties) try, our Rakhine people will vote for Rakhine nationals.”

Rutsa urged to the players to give their best in taking part in games and sporting activities and stated to be a professional player one has to devote time to whatever games he/she takes part. He also congratulated the PSU for organizing the sports meet and there should be healthy compe-
tition amongst the team. Further he also lauded the KVYO in taking a bold decision to re-introduce many sporting actives which were played amongst the village during the past years and hoped this would go a long way in scouting talents amongst the players from Kohima

LONDON, OCTOBER 2 (REUTERS): England coach Roy Hodgson can give Wayne Rooney "no guarantees" that he will always pick him for the national team and said the current crop of forwards he has to choose from is the best he has seen during his tenure. Manchester United forward Rooney will be awarded a golden boot by Sir Bobby Charlton before England's Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia on Oct. 9 after overtaking him as the country's leading scorer. Rooney became the first England player to reach the 50-goal mark when he scored against Switzerland on Sept. 8 but his club form has come under increasing scrutiny. He went 11 Premier League games without a goal before ending the drought with his first league goal of the season in United's 3-0 win over Sun-
derland last weekend. Asked if the 29-year-old could lose his place in the England team if his form did not recover, Hodgson said: "That day hasn't arrived and, with any luck, it won't arrive ... but there are no guarantees. "He would regard me as someone who is very false if I ever said to him, 'Your place is guaranteed.' I would be very upset if anyone asked me to give them a guarantee of a place." Liverpool striker Danny Ings has also been called up for the qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania (Oct. 12), along with Rooney, Harry Kane, Theo Walcott and Jamie Vardy. Daniel Sturridge misses out after recently returning from long-term injury. “If you put Danny Welbeck into that list as well, who has done ever so well for us, I think our choice
is enormously different to 2012, put it that way,” Hodgson said. “If I cast my mind back, there seems to be so many more players now knocking on the door than there were four years ago, so that’s got to be very positive." Hodgson also invited Aston Villa's Jack Grealish to train with the team after the 20-year-old decided to play for England rather than Republic of Ireland. However, Villa manager Tim Sherwood refused to let Grealish go with the 20-year-old still waiting for FIFA to ratify the nationality decision. "The idea was to show him St George’s Park and ... induct him into England ... but Tim made it clear that wasn't a good idea as far as he was concerned and he needed the boy to do some more training because he missed pre-season."

An Honour to rani- Gaidinliu
M
y simple understanding and in my personal view on the outlook of our Hero-ine Dear Grandmother Rani Gaidinliu as published in local papers and through hear-say during the year 1987-1988. I am not a speaker nor a writer, but the way our believers sisters and brothers commended about her life has disheartened us, which is also very unfair on the part of Christian believers. It pained me to say and compelled me to write under the banner of Christ. As a person (she) was very much a human being like everyone. People are the same everywhere with just a few minor distinction. A chosen one by Almighty God. She was a reserved, a robust look, a spiritual woman, charismatic spirit, a brave warrior, a steadily life, witty in answers, talk but less speak, a woman of wisdom, dignified woman and a figure woman in a male dominated society. Acknowledge of difference by the people was taboo, which is hard to get used to, more to say is that, prejudice about her life was the main factor among the common people. She mingled with the people and live in the society, healing the sick. She never neglected the society whenever she was invited for. God’s commissioned was, “A LIFE TIME MISSION”. She lived her life and her legacy speaks today. It reminds me and challenge us to be a role model in this generation. To be more sincere in our spiritual life, truthful in action and God fearing life. Today we need few Rani Gaindiliu in order to safeguard our future generation, so that our generation would be; a better space to live in. Nagaland suppose to be 99% of Christians but I wonder sometimes, most of the news are spiritual consuming news, the world is watching at us, very appropriately what Mahatma Gandhi has said was right, perhaps he was moved by the Christian religion, but he did not like the Christians, is it not true today? If our mother is alive today, what will be her reaction?. Let us reason together and ask ourselves, Infact, I should say we are the real DEVIL spirit in human form. Our early Naga Christians believed with Repentance, but present Naga believers believed without repentance. Believing means choosing to trust Jesus alone, instead of trusting in Jesus alone we trust in many ways. Repentance:- Turning away from “SINS”, but we believe in Almighty God without Repentance Mark 1:15 If we are repented we will not want to fight, kill, jealous, envy, insult, selfish, belittle last but not the least HATRED. T
he NSCN Reformation most of which workers are from Manipur Nagas and Arunachal Nagas solidised its stand for integration of all Naga areas. The President NSCN-Reformation Y.Wangtin Naga said, while the Ato Kilonser of his Government P. Tikhak is from Changlang District of Arunachal Pradesh, the political Supervisor Mr. Aching Rongmei is hailing from Tamenglong District of Manipur, thus the issue of integration of all Naga areas will top its political agenda to be placed on GOI’s table. He further said that, the NSCN-Reformation cannot and will not compromise the issue of Naga sovereignty while integration is small part of whole issue. Hence, there is no first class and second class Naga as no Naga is above the other Naga. The NSCN-Reformation President recalled his association with S.S.Khaplang and said, he have proved to the latter what he was for him and for the Nagas of Myanmar country. He further said, his main agenda on signing of ceasefire agreement with Myanmar on 9th April 2012 was to demarcate the Naga areas including important townships like Maulike, Thamanti, Khamti and Homlin which have gone to san sate and Tenai and Singbwiyang felled into Kachin state. All these business hubs and board Towns have gone to other states in the recent past which displayed the weakness and visionless of S.S.Khaplang. The present Naga self
Administrative zone confines to Layse, Layhe, Namyong and Pangshaw. His Excellency, President NSCN-Reformation always expressed his regret for stubbornness of S.S.Khaplang who never try to understand the plight of the Nagas in Myanmar who needs define territory demarcated officially which includes all lost Townships from san sate and Kachin state instead of confronting with Myanmar authority on sovereignty issue which is out of question in Myanmar Naga context who has no even define homeland. He also advised S.S.Khaplang to seize the opportunity at hand along with other ethnic groups who are in ceasefire with Union of Myanmar for solution on the basis of federal relationship because he foresees the best solution with Mayanmar Government much more better solution ever expect from GOI. The president NSCN –Reformation regretted that, as he failed to convince S.S.Khaplang, the similar problem may continue to face his brothers Mr. Chowangsing Kilonser, Mr. Angkan Kilonser, Maj.Gen. Angmei and Mr. Yaungaung Kilonser as he was with those leaders in every single situation as same family member. The present world is a global Village where no issue can be resolved through military confrontation but unfortunately S.S.Khaplang is always in his fancy world far from realistic and pragmatic. In the past, the GOI have neglected the Nagas and proved
her betrayal character, never to be easily believed, yet the Naga people must display its maturity. Therefore, the President NSCNreformation opposed proposed ceasefire abrogation as the then convener ceasefire Supervisory Board NSCN (K) as he have foreseen the uprooting of S.S.Khaplang’s position from Indian side Nagaland because of the presence of some Naga political groups like NSCN (IM) and NSCN (U) who have ceasefire with GOI. Moreover, S.S.Khaplang nationality as Myanmarese may prove set back to de-stabiles his position adding to his miscalculating the ground reality and took wrong step by not only abrogation of ceasefire with GOI but also betrayed his loyalists in Indian side making them the victims of his irresponsible and brute character which was responsible for his declination. His selfishness and suspicious nature also played negative role to this destruction. It is also a fact that, neither GOI will entertain S.S.Khaplang as genuine Naga leader on his Myanmarese nationality nor S.S. Khaplang will open his heart to GOI simply because he belongs to Myanmar. However, the solution for the Nagas of Myanmar can be possible only through S.S.Khaplang which needs moral and all possible supports from Nagas of Indian side instead of wrongly approaching the GOI for ceasefire review with NSCN (K) because he knows his position so clearly that, he him-
self unilaterally abrogated ceasefire with GOI without consulting the Nagas of Indian side and therefore if desires, the Naga NGOs-Naga Hoho, ENPO,NMA and State Government should approach Myanmar Government instead of GOI for ceasefire and solution with NSCN (K). About few Indian side Naga cadres siding with S.S.Khaplang (NSCN-K), no one should surprise as even the most civilized countries like USA, Brazil, UK and Israel have goons. Such goons and Mafias will continue to exist, as long as this world exists. Interestingly, few such frustrated cadres of Indian side Nagaland try to condemn NSCN (IM), NSCN (U) and NSCN (R) for having ceasefire with GOI and calling them bro-Indian, then what about the NSCN(K) ceasefire with Myanmar? How will they call themselves? And if the NSCN (K) condemns three NSCNs that, they have abandoned Naga sovereignty issue only for maintaining ceasefire with GOI, then they also may abandon Naga sovereignty issue because they NSCN (K) also maintains similar ceasefire with Union of Mayanmar. The NSCN –Reformation therefore appeals to all the Nagas including different Naga political groups to bury their differences and seize the opportunity for the common good of the Nagas. The real reconciliation and openness is the only remedial to our long suffering. MIP, NSCN –REFORMATION
Politics over illegal Bangladeshi immigration
T
o win election in India the candidates have to get just one more votes than their opponents and because of this mode of selection , the political parties and candidates do nothing and everything to get that one precious extra votes from their opponent to win . Thus they go about wooing the voter in every possible way from making tall promises, reservation, quota, package etc. The recent proposal of the central government to give legal status to Bangladeshi immigrants on religious ground is also one such political tactic to gain political mileage over its opponents. Such an act or proposal in my opinion is done for narrow political gain, which will not be beneficial in the long run for the India as a nation and for the north east states, especially for the states of Assam and Nagaland which is most affected by the influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. As a human being its our moral responsibility to accommodate asylum seekers but the influx of Bangladeshi immigrants are mostly based on economic reason and not much on religious persecution or was and even in the most liberal country of Europe and in US infiltration on economic reason is strictly pro-
hibited. Most of the Bangladeshi cross into India on large scale as they see India as a much greener pasture in every possible way compared to their mother land. However the problem we see in Assam and Nagaland is that there is growing fear of immigrants outnumbering the genuine citizens in Assam in near future and this fear has led to violent ethnic clashes between the Assamese and Bengali, mostly Muslims. In Nagaland also there is growing incidents of the immigrants cooping the business establishment in Nagaland by organising powerful illegal syndicate's who dictates the price of buying and selling of goods based on their monopolistic terms and not based on market values. Further there is growing incidents of immigrants involving in various illegal activities. Even the courts in India have ruled that illegal Bangladeshi immigrants "poses a danger to India’s internal security". Therefore the centre and the state government must be careful in coming up with policies regarding this serious and sensitive issue of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants which is brought about mostly during election or when a heinous crime involving the immigrants surfaced in the news, otherwise there is no well plan policies or se-
riousness by the centre and state government to tackle this problem. For Most of the political parties and politicians they don't see Bangladeshi immigrants as illegal immigrants but for them they are precious vote bank to take advantage of during elections. As there was a story about two cats fighting for equal share of cake, and the monkey in the pretext of solving it ate up all the cake. Similarly as the political parties fights each other, using every possible tricks in the book to win elections, its the immigrants who are having the last laugh. Whether Hindu Bangladeshi, Muslim Bangladeshi, Bengali Bangladeshi, etc immigrants means immigrants, there should not be different yardstick in dealing with the issue of illegal immigrants. During independence declaration everyone was given a choice and they choice not to be part of India whatever the reason may be, its not our responsibility to entertain them all the time. We can look after them whenever there is crisis like in 1971 war but let's not give them the opportunity to decide the fate of our representatives. Let’s not make them play the role of a king maker. Further India itself is finding it difficult to accommodate its own citizens being
the second largest population in the world and we will soon be overtaking China in few years as the largest population in the world. Therefore the centre and the state government should first try to look upon the grievance of the Indian citizens before they step in to solve the problems of others citizens. As a human society no doubt we have to accommodate our neighbours and our fellow human being but it should be based on genuine reasons and not based on narrow selfish party and individual interest and definitely not at the cost of national and state interest. Sadly the issue of illegal immigrants from our neighbours has harmed and is continuing to harm our interest. Therefore before the issue becomes difficult to solve the concerned national, regional political parties instead of playing the blame game and fighting among themselves, they should come together and show political will to solve the problems of the influx of illegal immigrants for the good future of the state and the nation as a whole. Let's not put the future of our coming generation at risk for money and to be in power for few years. Moameren Pongen Asst Prof, Political science , Chumukedima

Blake Lively shuts down her B lifestyle website, Preserve
I
t’s just over a year since Blake Lively launched Preserve.us, her attempt at a lifestyle and ecommerce site that celebrated all things artisanal, from clothes to crockery. But today, she has announced that she will shut down the business on October 9 as she feels it never quite met its full potential. “We have an incredible team of people who do beautiful work, but we launched the site before it was ready, and it never caught up to its original mission: It’s not making a difference in people’s lives, whether superficially or in a meaningful way,” she told US Vogue. “And that’s the whole reason I started this company, not just to fluff myself, like, ‘I’m a celebrity! People will care what I have to say!’ It was so never meant to be that, and that kind of became the crutch because it was already up and already running, and it’s hard to build a brand when you’re running full steam ahead—how do you catch up?” she added. Alas, this isn’t Lively, 28, just admitting defeat – the essence of Preserve will be back, but rebranded and

rebuilt as what it was always intended to be. Nevertheless, she is prepared for the media backlash that will likely succeed today’s announcement. “I know what it’ll look like, what I’m facing publicly, that people are just going to have a heyday with this,” she says. “But it’s so much worse to continue to put something out there—to ask my team to put something out there—that isn’t the best we can do. I’m going to take this hit, and the only way I can prove all the negative reactions wrong is to come back with a plan that will rock people. And I have that plan. And I’m so excited about it, and that’s what gave me the courage to do this, to say, ‘You know what, I’m going to give myself one more shot at this, and I really have to do it as well as I can do it this time.’” She hasn't given a timescale for the new project though we expect this time, she's taking her time to get it just right. It’s been a busy 12 months for Lively, who is married to fellow actor Ryan Reynolds. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named James, in December 2014.

George RR Martin busts 'Game of Thrones' movie rumours!
A
uthor George RR Martin, whose fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire has been adapted into TV show Game of Thrones, says there is no plan of turning the popular drama into a film. Martin, 67, took to his blog to quash the rumours that a movie adaption of the Emmy-winning TV show was in the works. "I don't know where this latest round of 'There's going to be a GAME OF
THRONES movie' nonsense is coming from, but suddenly it is everywhere, and all of us connected with the show and HBO are being bombarded. But nothing has changed," he wrote. "The idea of ending GAME OF THRONES with one or more major feature films was first floated, three or four years ago. Let me say once again: this was NOT MY IDEA. However, I may have been the first one to mention the

notion in public -- where and how I no longer recall -- so somehow I became associated with it," the author continued. Martin added he loves the idea of a big screen Game of Thrones adaptation, but there has not been any initiative taken from cable channel HBO, which airs the drama. "I did say that I liked the idea. Of course, I liked the idea. And the idea is still powerfully attractive. Not just to me, but to many people connected with the show. Actors, directors, producers, writers. It would be a great way to end. Which doesn't mean it is going to happen. There is great enthusiasm for the notion, sure, but not necessarily from HBO. They are in the TV business, not the feature film business..." Martin is currently penning the next instalment of the series, titled, The Winds of Winter.

North East United eye more impact in ISL Season Two

Guwahati, OctOber 2 (iaNS): Representing one of the most football crazy regions in the country, North East United FC (NEFC) left their fans hearbroken last season when they finished last in the Indian Super League (ISL). Led by Spanish World Cup winner Joan Capdevila, NEFC made a good start by defeating eventual runnersup Kerala Blasters FC in their opening match. But things went downhill for them after that and they ended up with just three wins from the 14 matches in the league stage. They had suffered a whopping five defeats and notched up six draws. But having put the disappoinment of the inaugural season behind, the team -- owned by Bollywood actor John Abraham -- will hope to do better this year after several changes to their squad. Former Venezuela manager Cesar Farias has replaced previ-
ous incumbent Herbert. Farias, who has been at the helm of several top clubs in Venezuela, has had an illustrous managerial career. He is the first and only manager to have ever taken the Venezuelan national team to the semi-finals of the Copa America when they finished fourth in the 2011 edition of the prestigious tournament. During his time at the helm, Venezuela also defeated Brazil for the first time in their history with a final score of 2-0 in 2008. Earlier, the 42-year-old had also helped Venezuela's U-20 team to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time. At NUFC, Farias will have plenty of quality to weave his magic with. The Guwahati based outfit has a formidable strike force with the additon of Ivory Coast international Boubacar Sanogo and former Senegal striker Diomansy Kamara and Nicolas Velez
Squad Goalkeepers: Gennaro Bracigliano, Lalthuammawia Ralte, Rehenesh TP Defenders: Cédric Hengbart, Miguel Garcia, Marlangki Suting, Reagan Singh, Robin Gurung, Aiborlang Khongjee, Yumnam Raju, Zohmingliana Ralte Midfielders: Simao Sabrosa (Marquee), Silas, Boithang Haokip, Seityasen Singh, Siam Hangal, Alan Deory, Kondwani Mtonga, Bruno Herrero Arias, Sanju Pradhan Forwards: Diomansy Kamara, Boubacar Sanogo, Nicolas Velez, Holicharan Narzary, Francis Dadzie. of Argentina. Although Spanish centre forward Koke, who was the highest scorer for the club alst year with four goal, has departed for Greek Super League outfit Veria, the arrival of the high profile trio means NUFC will not feel his absence. Royal Wahingdoh forward Seityasen Singh has also been bought to strengthen things further. The 23-year-
old Indian international was snapped up in the ISL player auctions for Rs 56 lakhs. The presence of Ghanian striker Francis Dadzie and Hlicharan Narzary of Dempo as back up mean that NUFC would not lack firepower in the forwardline in the second season. NUFC have also replaced last year's marquee player Capdevila with former Barcelona winger Simao Sabrosa. With
the 35-year-old former Portugal star on the left wing and the speedy Sanju Pradhan on the right, NUFC should be strong on the counter. Talented India U-19 winger Alen Deory is also a good attacking option. With his raw pace and dribbling ability, the youngster can stretch rival defences if brought on as a second half substitute. Zambian midfielder Kondwani Mtonga is one of the few players retained by the club this season. The 31-year-old, who won the 2012 African Cup of Nations with the Zambian team, was impressive during the first season with his aerial ability and incisicive passing. Mtonga will have an able partner in central midfield in Boithang Haokip. The 24-year-old from Manipur can also be useful with his freekicks. Although Haokip mostly plays as a central midfielder, he can also play as a winger or side back.
The presence of former Sevilla player Bruno Herrero Arias and exPortuguese international Silas will strengthen the midfield further. In defence, former Portugal U-21 international Miguel Garcia is also one of last season's players to be retained by the club. The 32-year-old, who made 13 appearances for NUFC in 2014, played for Sporting Clube de Goa in the ISL last season and has gained more experience of Indian conditions which will help during the second edition of the ISL . French central defender Cédric Hengbart is also expected to be one of the pillars of the NUFC defence. Marlangki Suting and Raju Yumnam are among the most prominent Indian defenders in the squad. NUFC embarked on a preseason tour of Durban, South Africa, and enjoyed a pretty decent outing, as they recorded two wins from three games.

Real jump the gun on Ronaldo scoring record This the worst period in my career, says Mourinho
C M Y K
MaDriD, OctOber 2 (reuterS): Real Madrid paid homage to Cristiano Ronaldo as their outright leading scorer on Friday even though the official statistics show he has yet to overhaul former Spain striker Raul. Real, and some Spanish media, believe an effort five years ago that was deemed a goal by centre back Pepe should have been awarded to the Portugal captain and he therefore has 324 goals, one more than Raul. The disputed goal came in a La Liga game at Real Sociedad in September 2010 when Ronaldo's shot arrowed towards the Sociedad wall, looped up off Pepe's back and over goalkeeper Claudio Bravo into the net. "I would never have imagined when I put on this shirt for the first time that I would be the team's best goal scorer," Ronaldo said at a presentation at the Bernabeu stadium where he received a trophy mark-

ing his achievement. "I am very happy," added the 30-year-old. "Firstly, I want to thank my team mates because without
them it would never have been possible." Ronaldo's next chance to officially break the record is Sunday's La Liga match at At-
letico Madrid. He needed a mere 308 matches across seven seasons to equal Raul's tally of 323, amassed in 741 games over 16 years.
16TH NSF MARTYRS’ MEMORIAL TROPHY 2015 MT Youth Club, Senapati FC move to pre-quarters
LONDON, OctOber 2 (reuterS): Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says he is going through the worst period of his managerial career with his team winning just four of their 11 matches this season. The Premier League champions currently sit 14th in the table after seven games, having just won twice in the league. It is the kind of position they regularly occupied before the arrival of billionaire Roman Abramovitch in 2003, but one that younger Chelsea fans are unused to seeing them in. Chelsea, who kept 17 league clean sheets last season, have kept just one so far against Arsenal, and have conceded 14 goals. Only Sunderland, who are bottom, have let in more in the league. No team has allowed their opponents more shots on target than Chelsea, while Saturday's opponents Southampton have allowed the fewest in the league this season. "I define this as the worst period in my career. It's a fantastic experience, even though I don't want to repeat it again," Mourinho told reporters at the club's training ground at Cobham, south of Lon-

don. "Players know when they make mistakes. I don't know what it's like in your offices, but nobody seems to care about your mistakes," he said. Mourinho refused to be drawn on the subject of Eva Carnero, the former first team doctor who quit after being criticised by the manager. Although he was cleared by the FA of discriminatory charges against the doctor, FA chairman Greg Dyke said on Thursday Mourinho was in the wrong and should have apologised. "I'm not going to comment, one day I will but not today," the 52-year-
old said. Branislav Ivanovic has been heavily criticised for his performances this season, but Mourinho continued to back the player, saying the Serbia international is the best right-back in the league, but conceding that his form must improve. "I have no doubt Ivanovic is the best right-back and also no doubt he needs to improve his form. "He likes to speak with me about mistakes. He doesn't cry about it like some newspapers," he said. "There is open communication between everyone here, with no crying
and no prima donnas," the former Real Madrid manager added. Mourinho, who will be hoping to maintain his perfect league record against Southampton, said he no fresh injury worries after the 2-1 midweek Champions League loss to Porto. Thibaut Courtois' recovery from injury is going well, with the keeper expected back in December, the Portuguese said, while confirming that he was hoping to sign former Italy keeper Marco Amelia, who has been training with the team. Apart from the poor results, the other issue troubling Chelsea's fans has been the absence of club captain John Terry from the starting lineup. Terry has been an unused substitute four times in the last five matches, with the Chelsea faithful chanting "we want our captain back" after their defeat at Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday. Asked about Terry's situation, Mourinho replied: "I am happy they sing and support John. It is more important they support John when he is not playing. He is ready to play every game, even when I leave him on the bench, he is ready to play."
