‘Blood on my hands’
Exposes the Army’s shocking staged encounters Bhavana Akella IANS

Through shocking and revelatory confessions of an Indian Army officer on extrajudicial killings and statesanctioned murders by the armed forces, journalist Kishalay Bhattacharjee’s latest book depicts how Indian state is built on violence and questions how a democracy can sustain acts which violate human rights for decades together. In his book, “Blood on my hands” (Harper Collins; Pages: 200; Price: Rs. 250), Bhattacharjee’s conversations with an anonymous army officer serve as an expose for the highly regarded service in the country, the Indian Army. The revelations explain significant shortcomings in the way the armed forces in the country are designed to function. “The officers need a definite number of points to get a citation and earn their ranks and awards. Under this pressure, the army units bid to purchase a guy to be killed from the mafia,” Bhattacharjee told IANS, recalling from the confessions. The confessions are largely about killings in the North-East. In order to earn the points, there are staged encounters of absolutely

innocent people, Bhattacharjee said, adding that to earn money to stage the encounter (planting a gun etc.) the officers take to making extra bucks through narcotics, timber smuggling, and allowing human trafficking. “I guess it was 300 points. Each kill brought five points. So these guys were short of ten points; and they contacted the mafia...They killed these two (from Bangladesh) just a day before they left, and the CRPF was roped in to aid the army,” read the confessions from the book. One of the chapters, with confessions from the ‘inner circle’ of the army also indicates that the “succession and the big fights involving the army chiefs also has the staged encounters as a part.” This could be one of the reasons, that it “embarrasses the Indian army”,that the book has been trending in Pakistan, Bhattacharjee said. Born in Guwahati, Assam, Bhattacharjee, who has covered the conflict in north east region and the Maoist corridor for many years now, said belonging to the region gave him a bias that he had “absolutely no sympathy with militants or police.” During his time, as a reporter in the region, he said, “whenever an encounter
happened,we were forced to give the official version, and missed out on real information. That’s why in conflict reportage in India, most of the information is incorrect.” Indian state has been built on violence, and violence has been institutionalised in the country through various laws, the journalist said. Many cases are just open and shut, and are not prosecuted, he said. “When Indian union was created, we sent tanks to annexe regions -- violence has been monopolised and institutionalised in the country. Armed Forces Special Protection Act (AFSPA) was an Emergency act,” he said. “How can an Emergency act, in a democracy, be in place for nearly 58 years!” he exclaimed. There are over a dozen “draconian” acts in the country like the AFSPA -which have been causing “gross human right violations”, Bhattacharjee added. “There was a situation when a beggar was picked up from a railway station and killed. This mafia of supplying human beings to the army to be killed is something I did not know of and was deeply disturbed to know,” he explained. His meeting with the army officer, who confes-
sion forms a major part of the book, “was rather accidental”, he said. “I had met him during my stay in the north east. Apparently through one of my reports, I had helped him. Over a drink we started talking and later with his permission documented it,” Bhattacharjee said, talking about the process of writing the book. With confessions from chief secretaries, army generals, home secretaries and police officials, he was not sure whether he should write the book, as he was told it would “defame the Indian army” he said. But the voice of a very senior army personnel, who said the book must be written since the “mess must be cleared” made him pen down the facts, Bhattacharjee said. The anecdote of Julius Robert Oppenheimer, who after testing the A-bomb in 1946, met the US President Harry Truman, to say “Mr. President, I have blood on my hands” has been stuck in his head while writing the book he said. “The term as a title talks of pure murder, and doesn’t dilute the situation,” Bhattacharjee said, adding that his next book would reveal the dynamics of the adivasis and maoists in the country.

WSSU silent agitation on Oct 5 • Demands cancellation of 13 appointed teachers • Threatens to call for a bandh in Dimapur Morung Express News Dimapur | October 3
The Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) has decided to hold silent agitation on October 5 from 10:00 am in the offices of District Education Officer, Dimapur and SDEO, Niuland demanding cancellation of appointment of 13 Primary Teachers (PTs) within its jurisdiction. Request for cancellation of the appointments and to deploy bonafide efficient candidates basing on linguistic norms was made on September 3 and deadline set for September 30. Addressing media persons in Dimapur on Saturday, WSSU office bearers said several appeal letters were written to the Department of School Education to follow the Department’s order dated March 15, 2012 which stated that “all Pri-
mary Teachers recruited shall belong to the linguistic group and should be conversant with the lingua franca of the area and preferably a local candidate in his/ her own village.” Documents made available to the media showed that the WSSU on different occasions had written to the Department and DEO Dimapur not to accept appointment of any Primary Teachers in Western Sumi area without following the laid down norms. WSSU, however, said that the Department flouted its own rules and appointed 13 PTs in Western Sumi villages in the month of August 2015. “The appointed teachers were non conversant with the lingua franca of the area,” WSSU President, Atokiho Sumi added. “We feel sorry for the appointed teachers under SSA, we are not against them but the Department for flouting its own rules in the appointment process,” Atokiho said. Stating that the October 5 agitation was the first phase, the WSSU said if the government does not meet its demands, it may even consider calling for a bandh in Dimapur.

Rio urges Modi not to give consent on three controversial Manipur bills
NEw DElhI, OCTOBER 3 (IANS): Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha member Neiphio Rio on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to give his consent to three bills passed by the Manipur assembly ostensibly to safeguard the rights of the state’s indigenous people. “Agitations have been carried out by the civil society and mass-based organisations of the tribal people and students’ bodies have taken to the streets,” Rio wrote in his letter to the prime minister, a copy of which is available with IANS. “The sequence of events clearly indicates that the bills have created mistrust, and the desire and will of the people have been undermined,” he stated. The passing of the bills on August 31 brought to an end a months-long mass agitation by people living in the valley districts of the north-east-
ern state demanding an inner line permit system on the lines of those in force in three other northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland. However, tribes like Nagas, Kukis, Zomis and Hmars have claimed that the three bills would directly undermine the existing safeguards for the tribal hill areas regarding land ownership and population influx as the primary threat for the tribal people came not from outside the state but the Meitei people from the valley itself. The bills include the Protection of Manipur People Bill, Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms Bill (Seventh Amendment), and the Manipur Shops and Establishments Bill (Second Amendment). The day the bills were passed, protesters, mainly from tribal organisations in
the hills of the state, torched five houses belonging to Congress lawmakers. These included the houses of state Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing and Lok Sabha member from Outer Manipur Thangso Baite in Churachandpur district. The violence and resultant police action left at least nine people dead. “Considering the volatile situation and the possibility of more violence and disturbance in the overall scenario in the state of Manipur, I urge upon the government of India not to give its consent to the three bills passed by the Manipur legislative assembly as the bills are directly against the welfare, desire and will of the tribal people,” Rio, a leader of the Nagaland People’s Front, stated in his letter to the prime minister.

not to have any inferiority complex feelings as harbouring such feelings would only encourage others to exploit them further. Stating that poverty is not a crime, Acharya also cited the example of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who began his life as a humble tea seller. State coordinator, Na-
galand Domestic Workers’ Movement (NDWM), Sr. Therese Vanlalhtuaii, who presented an overview of the movement, informed that NDWM was initiated in 2008 with interest of the Sisters and at the invitation of Sr. Jeanne Devos, founder of National Domestic Workers Welfare Trust, due to the pressing
conditions of the domestic working women and girl children, such as long hours of work, heavy work load, low wages, job insecurity and abuse etc. Consequently, members of NDWM formed the Nagaland Domestic Workers’ Union on June 16, 2014, to strengthen their fight for recognition, dignity of work

Stressing on skill-based education, he said that the challenge of universities and colleges today is to produce skilled and enterprising young people, which would empower India’s massive youthful population to become assets. “Everyone of us should have a social responsibility” towards this end. “Getting a degree is not the end; it is the beginning of life. Students, when you leave college, you need to have (acquired) some skill otherwise you are not a graduate.” Stating that universities are creating more and more unemployable people, he said that universities should strategise to reverse this trend by also focusing on livelihood-based curriculum. In this regard, the governor said that the Government of India has put into motion a programme to make university education more skill oriented. “The youth is India’s asset. Be positive and convince yourself that you will not become a burden (to the society).”

The Nocte Homeland Trails
At Khonsa in Arunachal Pradesh, participating in the life of this Naga tribe is itself an adventure Amrita Das The Hindu
On my way to the remote town of Khonsa, I realised how little I knew about the headquarters of Tirap, a district in Eastern Arunachal Pradesh, bordering Myanmar. Through the rainy morning in Assam, the concrete roads took us to Hukanjuri check-post, where the permits are checked and I bid farewell to the concrete roads. The views of the small patches of tea gardens under the overcast sky fuelled my curiosity. After the six-hour drive, Khonsa delighted me with its brimming life, friendly people and brighter skies. The inhabitants of Khonsa are primarily Noctes, whereas Tirap also has a high percentage of Wanchos and Tutsas. Barring the minimal difference in facial features, the lifestyle and the practices of Noctes and Wanchos are similar. Their origins can be traced back to the
Naga tribes. Noctes have now created sub-tribes, depending on their original villages and are often considered as becoming somewhat ‘urbanised’. In my time of exploring the Nocte villages, I found that assumption was perhaps true. In the next few days, I spent my time exploring villages where the Noctes reside. As I drove away from the muddy roads and the steep houses of Khonsa, the landscapes drastically change. Sanliam, Kheti, Lapnan and Luthong villages are hidden away behind the thick green grove of trees. The brown patches of Jhum cultivation have left their despairing signs in the abundant, lush green forests. Sitting beside Khon Wang, my guide around Tirap, I eagerly ask all my questions about the lineage of the Noctes. He introduces me to stories of their ancestral practice of headhunting. The origins of this traditional practice
are varied from the ceremonial purpose of owning territory and defending communities to ritual violence and cannibalism. For generations, Noctes have been fierce headhunters, where they have ambushed and strategised attacks on enemies to expand or safeguard territory. The art of divination played an important role in their daring ambushes. A prediction from the almighty Rang would guide their optimism and strategy. Prestigious facial tattoos were awarded to those who came back successful from the raids, demarcating a step-up in the hierarchy. Headhunting was banned by the British and the last case in the district was reported in the 1960s. With the introduction and the spread of Christianity, people have chosen other ways to sustain themselves, like moving to cities like Itanagar for urban jobs or enrolment in the Indian Army. All the prized wins from their conquests
were buried, destroying all signs of the tradition in very many villages now. Lapnan is a scenic village with 140 houses, about 6 km from Khonsa. It was here that I was initiated into the Nocte way of life. As I made my way through the thatched houses, I saw curious children peep from behind the bamboo walls. Since I was heading to the Chief’s house, it was only natural that I was quickly briefed about the social significance behind his designation. Every village has a Chief or raja and he is considered the decision-maker and the final authority in the village. Most of his work consists of delegation, while maintaining harmony within his space. The practice of polygamy is prevalent in the Chief’s personal life where he is expected to marry at least three times. In the Nocte households, the wives live separately in each house with their respective children, while the husband has to support
all families simultaneously, both financially and socially. Previously, the selection of the Chief was inherited; now the process is democratic, where the villagers vote. I walk into the Chief’s house and I am greeted by his young and very welcoming wife. This home was my first brush with Nocte hospitality. Their homes are spacious and usually divided into male and female sections, where both areas have fireplaces. The fireplace in the female section is used as the kitchen, whereas the men huddle around theirs, spending hours in discussions. I sat quietly admiring every artefact and utility. Houses here are made of bamboo and adorned with various animal heads like the Mithun’s, a big bovine found in these parts, or the Hornbill’s. In no time, we were served a glass of Jumin, a rice beer made locally with fermented rice or millet. A few steps away from
the house, I crossed over to look at the Morung, the Nocte community space. Morung or pang, as it is referred to in one of the Nocte dialects, is where once the headhunters would display their trophies after successful conquests. It is a dormitory hall made of mud, and more recently covered with glass, which has wooden shelves for the display of the skulls and heads of other living creatures in a hierarchical order. After a victorious hunt, the dead were offered prayers of peace, and celebratory feasts were held, with singing and dancing. Women are not permitted into the Morung, and customarily, the men and young boys guarding the village stay here. In case of any threat or emergency, they play the large log drum, which is the trunk of a large tree. Returning to the town centre of Khonsa, I realised my days of exploraA local strikes a pose. Outcome of first round of talks with KIM Arunachal assured of 'maximum' central aid ended in positive note: Manipur Govt Our correspondent Imphal | October 3
Manipur Home Minister Gaikhangam today assessed the positive outcome of the talks between the Government and Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) held on Friday. KIM, the apex body of the Kuki community, held talks with the Government here as the latter has been working on trying to hammer out a solution to the longstanding stalemate over three Bills passed in the state assembly on August 31 last. On the sidelines of a function held here at the
Congress Bhavan on Saturday, Gaikhangam told the media that the Manipur Government has been working hard to get out from the longstanding stalemate. “The outcome of the first round of talks with KIM ended in a positive note,” he maintained. He hoped that talks can end the impasse and expressed confidence that there will be a final solution to it. The first round of talks between the two sides began a day after major Kuki social organizations allowed KIM to initiate talks with the Government on
the issue of the three Bills. However, the talks ended without a major breakthrough as the Government refused to consider the demand raised by representatives of KIM to bring back the controversial Bills to the table for discussion with all stakeholders from the valley and hills, reports said. The first meeting over the three Bills was attended by an eight-member team of KIM while the Government team was led by Chief Minister O Ibobi. Nine people had been killed in Churachandpur district in violent confrontations between protesters and security forces after the
state assembly passed the Protection of Manipur People Bill, 2015, the Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms (7th amendment) Bill, 2015 and the Manipur Shops and Establishments (Second Amendment) Bill, 2015. Communities in the hill districts, including almost all civil society groups, are demanding withdrawal of the three Bills saying they impinge on their rights. The Manipur Government time and again has insisted that the Bills only intended to safeguard the interests of all indigenous groups of Manipur refusing to consider the demand of the hill communities.

Arms smuggler Illegal immigrants enrolled in Meghalaya held in Goalpara electoral roll: Pressure groups claims
GUwAhAti, OctOber 3 (tNN): In a joint operation with the Army, the Goalpara police arrested an arms smuggler identified as Beldangson Marak from Krishnai's Kachimari area, about 124km from here, on Friday. Action on a tip-off, the security forces nabbed Marak and seized Rs 80,000 with several incriminating documents. Police suspect Marak was on his way to procure some firearms with the money and supply it to Garo rebels. "There was information that several GNLA militants and arms smugglers were hiding in the area. However, only Marak was arrested when they raided the area," a source said. The state police have intensified its operation against Garo rebels following the killing of two policemen from Meghalaya on Thursday near the Simsung river, 5km from Williamnagar of West Garo Hills, bordering Assam
ShillONG, OctOber 3 (UNi): Illegal immigrants have enrolled their names in the electoral rolls of the Garo Hill Autonomous District Council (GHADC) in Meghalaya, Garo Hills-based pressure groups said. The groups comprising of Garo Students Union, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People, the Achik Youth Welfare Organisation, the Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) and Federation for Achik Freedom (FAF) have launched massive campaigns across the five districts of Garo hills against the participation of non-tribal in the October 12GHADC elections. Most of these encroachers who are illegal immigrants have entered their names in the electoral rolls, the
Pay 20 percent puja bonus: Assam CM to tea companies GUwAhAti, OctOber 3 (iANS): Ahead of the forthcoming festive season, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday asked all tea companies to pay 20 percent puja bonus to workers. "The tea companies should pay 20 percent puja bonus to the tea workers, which are their due. It is our duty to see that the tea workers' interests are protected and they get their dues in time," Gogoi said. He said the tea companies, which have not decided as yet to pay 20% bonus, should make their stand clear to avoid any unrest or resentment. Festival bonus to tea workers has always been a sensitive issue in almost all tea gardens in the state. Every year, the government has
to take steps to ensure bonus to the workers to avoid resentment, which sometimes even leads to law and order problem. Assam has about 850 large and medium-size tea gardens with over 12 lakh workers in the industry that produces over 75 percent of India's total tea. Of the 850 gardens, the state-owned Assam Tea Corporation Limited (ATCL) has 15 gardens, where about 15,000 tea workers are employed. The ATCL gardens have already committed to pay 20% as bonus to the workers. "When the loss-making ATCL can dispense 20% puja bonus, other tea companies should also replicate the same for the benefit of the workers," Gogoi said.
groups said, alleging that the politicians are using them for vote-bank politics. Whether they have been thoroughly checked. The answer is most probably no because they are vote banks to politicians and the returning officers have to toe the line of their political masters. Referring to Rule 128 sub-rule (3), which they alleged that the returning officers have failed to follow by not keeping diligent check on dubious voters, the pressure groups said, It clearly states that a person shall not keeping be diligent to have taken up his fixed habitation in the district merely by the reason of his having resided therein in connection with his civil or millitary service or in exercise of any profession or calling. Citing the
example in the plain belts of West Garo hills, they said there are lots of dual voters who cast their vote both in Assam and Meghalaya. If the dual voters are also included in the electoral rolls of the District Council, then the ROs have not diligently processed the electoral rolls, they said. The groups also alleged that many Bangladeshi Muslims in Garo hills, first enter Assam get a valid document and then present themselves as Indian citizens, adding many lands belonging to the Garos are being encroached upon especially in places like Monabari, Ujjengre, Chibinang, Boldamgre, Jongkipara. These dual voters, illegal immigrants, land encroachers and squatters must not be allowed to exercise voting rights in
Meghalaya because many of their peoples' eligibility to vote are in question as they are not Indian citizens, they said. Let alone the question of their eligibility to vote in the MLA and MP elections. It is downright illegal to allow them to participate in the District Council elections which is a protected enclave that belongs only to the tribals, the groups further added. The point being the electoral roll of the Assembly Elections is used as the Electoral Rolls of the District Council. Everyone must understand that the spirit of the Sixth Schedule is entirely focused at protection of tribal areas and interests, by allowing self-governance through constitutional institutions at the district or regional level, they said.

The union minister said the DoNER ministry would try to work out the feasibility of funding the proposed Rs.150-crore multipurpose sports stadium at Itanagar, while work on an airport would also be taken up soon. Considering the high potential of the state and its scenic attributes, the government has also sanctioned a film institute in the state, Jitendra Singh said. He appreciated the people of Arunachal Pradesh for showing patience in the wake of some
incidents of law and order in the northeast. Tuki also sought the intervention of the DoNER minister to carry forward the work of an important road linking Seppa with Chayang Tajo. Work on the road, which is 81 km in length and is sanctioned by the North Eastern Council (NEC), was to be carried out by Gammon India. But in view of the cost escalation and resultant delay, the chief minister said the state government has submitted a revised estimate to the NEC.

Arunachal governor appeal to solve Chakma issue itANAGAr, OctOber 3 (tNN): Arunachal Pradesh governor Jyoti Prashad Rajkhowa has advised the state government to make concerted efforts to address the issue of settlement of Chakmas and Hajongs by taking the Centre into confidence. The Supreme Court, on September 17, had issued a directive to the Centre, as well as the state government, for settling Chakmas and Hajongs in three months which evoked widespread
reactions in the state. Chairing a review meeting on law and order on Thursday in view of the Supreme Court judgment, the governor said people and the state government seem to have no objections in granting citizenship to eligible Chakmas and Hajongs but they are totally against their settlement in Arunachal Pradesh. Rajkhowa said there must be no breach of peace, breakdown of law and order or any kind of economic blockade as
such unlawful activities would weaken the stand of the state government and indigenous people, said a communique. He emphasized on protection of life, liberty and property of every individual and all sections of people, including foreigners, as enshrined in Article 21 of the Constitution. He cautioned against anti-social elements trying to take advantage of the situation for creating law and order problems.

AJYCP activists on fast, seek ILP in Assam dent body is also opposing the Centre's recent move to regularize the entry and stay of non-Muslims from Bangladesh."AJYCP has been demanding ILP in Assam since 1978, but considering the unabated infiltration of people from other states, introduction of ILP has become much more important now. Someone coming from outside the state to contest elections in Assam is just not acceptable. AJYCP has intensified its agitation for introduction of ILP and will continue to do so," said AJYCP
president Biraj Kumar Talukdar. AJYCP activists were seen roaming in the villages and towns of the state organizing street meetings to mobilize the masses to join its agitation for ILP at a time when activists in other NE states have intensified their agitation demanding ILP. AJYCP alleged the government has not taken any prompt measure to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people, who are now facing a threat from a section of businessmen from outside the state.

cheNNAi/New Delhi, OctOber 3 (Pti): India's gasoline or petrol exports will fall by 98% by 2019 and will become the second largest importer of gasoline after Indonesia by 2024, BMI Research said. "We forecast India's net gasoline exports to decline by 97.8% over the next five years, from 3,06,800 barrels per day in 2014 to just 6,760 bpd in 2019. "This decline will be a result of rapid growth in domestic demand in India, which will require output normally designated for exports to be directed inwards," said BMI Research, a Fitch Group company. India, it said, will become a net importer of gasoline from 2020, despite a significant increase of production domestically. "Our forecasts show that India will become the second largest net importer of gasoline after Indonesia by the end of the decade, overtaking the likes of China, Australia and Malaysia as consumption growth slows in these key consumer countries," it said. The rise in domestic demand will provide an import outlet for India's growing gasoline production - set to rise
10.3% over the next five years. At present, India remains the largest gasoline exporter in the Asia-Pacific region, exporting the majority of its output to Asia and the Middle East, which accounted for nearly half of India's total refined fuels exports in 2014. However, falling demand in these two markets will see their imports diminish over the coming decade, it said. India's refined fuel shipments to the Middle East decreased by 14.3% over 20132014; a trend that may persist with output from new refineries expected to ramp up to full capacity over the next few years. Also, India's gasoline exports to the rest of Asia also declined by 9.7% over the same period. Rising fuel efficiency gains in the developed economies, such as Japan and Taiwan moderated gasoline use in the transport sectors, while refining capacity expansions in the emerging economies, such as Vietnam, has intensified competition in the exports market. Although a pick-up in refined fuels demand from Australia, due to the closure of some of its refineries is expected to provide some respite, it will not

India has been importing onions from Egypt and Afghanistan to tide over the crisis. The import of onions from Egypt is the highest to date. In 2013-2014, India imported 314 tonnes of onions from Egypt, while there was no import the previous year. In 2014-15, India imported 576 tonnes of onions. India also imports oranges from Egypt.
be sufficient to offset the loss in demand from Middle East and Asia, BMI said. Alternative growth markets exist - such as Africa or Latin America. "However, India would face considerable competition in these markets, as North American and European refiners look to offload large surplus of production in coming years," it said. India's strong domestic consumption growth will require more of its gasoline output to be directed inwards to meet domestic demand, thus reducing volumes available for exports. "We forecast India's gasoline consumption to rise by an average 10.2% per annum over the next 10 years, driven by solid economic growth, strong passenger car sales growth and structural rebalancing away from diesel," BMI said. Even as India adds about 1 million bpd of refining capacity by 2020, the pace of the country's consumption growth will outstrip that of refining capacity, rendering local production insufficient to meet domestic gasoline demand and turning the country into a net importer of the fuel.

informs Executive Students debate whether Naga sovereignty is a myth CBCC Committee members
KOhima, OctOber 3 (mexN): Sazolie College held its 10th Inter-Collegiate Debate Competition on the topic “Naga Sovereignty is a Myth”. 22 students from Phek, Mokokchung, Longleng, Jalukie, Zunheboto, Pfütsero, Dimapur, Zubza and Kohima participated. As the term sovereignty continues to have bewildering reflections on the minds of the Nagas, whether such a political claim is going to be a possibility in its true sense or not for the Nagas was discussed, a press release informed. The participants for the motion asserted that Naga sovereignty is a utopia, that Nagas are confused with the words ‘independence’ and ‘sovereignty’, and signing of peace accord by one faction will not bring any solution. Another important contention from one of the participants from the same bench
was that political independence precedes economic independence. Participants also questioned on why there is Disturbed Area Act if Nagas are free people. Another aspect in the search for Naga sovereignty is the Naga love for Indian money more than the passion for achieving Naga sovereignty. The lack for freedom of speech and expression among the Nagas as a drawback also added much substance to the debate, the release said. The participants on the opposition bench highlighted the decades-long sacrifice of the Nagas as a process of peoples’ struggles which will eventually bring about sovereignty. Different accords and agreements between the Government of India and various Naga Nationalist groups symbolize self determination of the Nagas that play positive steps towards sovereignty. The Naga struggle for sover-

eignty is a birthright claim of the Nagas was another point put forward by one of the debaters. It was also pointed out that the sacrifices of many Nagas then and now are symbol as well as bonding factor of Naga sovereignty. Debaters also justified their stance by saying that economic dependency is only a ‘dubbing’ slogan and therefore is not
a major problem in the fight for Naga sovereignty. The judges commented that Nagas had sovereign villages in the past and now with the problem of division amongst them, Naga sovereignty is becoming increasingly a myth, according to the release. A total of eight factions highlight the state of disunity among the Nagas, they said, adding
the solution rests in coming out boldly if we are to fight for sovereignty at all. Critic Dr. Phyobemo Ngully, Chairman, Kohima Educational Society, Kohima, spoke on the challenges and responses on the idea of Naga ‘Truth’. Only after we understand the root cause of Naga struggle, can we come to a consensus, said the Critic.
The judges of the competition were Neivikuolie Khatsü, General Secretary, Western Angami Public Organization, Sechü- Zubza; TL Kiusumong Tikhir, Revenue Officer, Kohima; and Dr. Seyiekhrielie Whiso, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Science College, Jotsoma. Rose Mary Mero from Pfütsero Government College bagged the first prize, Kaka Lotha of Patkai Christian College won the second prize and Aseno Terhüja from Kohima College, Kohima was the third winner. The five consolation prize winners were M Krosüh Hiesüh (Sazolie College, Jotsoma), Sapulu Krocha (Model Christian College, Kohima), Aguto Sumi (Japfü Christian College, Kigwema), Erina (Clark Theological College, Mokokchung), and Vinoka Lotha (Modern College, Kohima).

G
t was probably clear to you that your child was a miracle right from the first ultrasound. And since then your little one has been growing, learning, and changing at an astonishing rate. But we'll bet there are still a few things even you don't know about your child's dazzling developmental feats. When you're pregnant, it might seem like your baby is tucked away in oing to the playground should be a fun experience with your child. her own private (and Youngsters with special needs often love the equipment they find cozy!) universe inside there, but stumble over the socialization that's often expected in your belly. But she's
playground outings. If your playground visits have become more fearsome than fun, follow these five quick tips for a happier time out.
Know Why You're Going
D
o you see going to the playground with your child as an opportunity for fun, fresh air, and physical activity? Or are you loading it up with a lifetime's worth of expectations about What Going to the Park With My Child Will Be Like? Seeing your child experiencing equipment differently than you dreamed, interacting with other kids differently than you dreamed, embarrassing you in front of your peers in ways you never dreamed of, can make playground time an excruciating experience -- but that's all about YOU. Make playground time all about your child instead. Kids with sensory-integration issues often have a physical need for swinging or spinning that is intensely satisfying for them but looks weird to others. Structure your outing so that your child gets to enjoy those experiences, and you get to enjoy your child, on your child's agenda.
Pick the Playground Carefully
N
ow that you know why you're going to the playground -- to give your child a fun time as he or she defines that -- pick a playground that will ensure the best chance of that. It may or may not be the one in your neighborhood. It may or may not be the one that all the cool parents bring their kids to. It may or may not have the equipment that looks most delightful to you. Try visiting different parks with your child and finding the ones he or she feels are most thrilling, or least threatening. Find your own special place together, or set up a rotating schedule of sites.
Find the Best Time to Go
I
f endless uninterrupted swing time is of utmost importance to your child, you don't want to hit the playground when it's mobbed. While you're checking out playgrounds, notice when they tend to be crowded and when they tend to be empty. You can never absolutely ensure privacy or exclusive equipment access for your child -- padlocking the gate will just get you in trouble -- but you can go at times when kids are less likely to go (school hours, dinnertime, almost dark) instead of times when kids are most likely to (recess time at the nearby day-care center, game time at the adjacent ballfield). If you have a few parks on your rotation, you may be able to check a few and pick the least swamped.
Bring Your Own Playmates
actually experiencing the world outside along with you, even as she makes preparations to join it. Here are three fascinating facts about your growing baby that you might not know.
frequently, your baby gets used to it and stops responding. No need to worry — it's a sign that the brain is developing normally, says Lise Eliot, an associate professor of neuroscience at Chicago Medical School and author of What's Going On in There?
Startling in utero Your baby startles in utero when she hears a loud or sudden noise. This ability appears around 23 weeks, as any pregnant woman in her second or third trimester can attest. If Mom sneezes, her baby jumps. But if the same noise is repeated
Breathing underwater Your baby begins to "breathe" while still in the womb, even though his lungs aren't taking in any oxygen, says Eliot. At around 27 weeks, his fluid-filled lungs start to expand and compress due to the rhythmic contractions
Once Upon a Time A Hole in the Fence
I
n a small village, a little boy lived with his father and mother. He was the only son for them. The parents of the little boy were very depressed due to his bad temper. The boy used to get angry very soon and taunt others with his words. His bad temper made him fall for angry words. He scolded kids, neighbours and even his friends due to anger. He invited all worries for his parents through the verbal usage. While he forgot what he spoke in anger, his friends and neighbours avoided him. His mother and father consoled him in many ways to give up his anger and develop kindness. Unfortunately, all their attempts failed. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea. One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails. He asked his son to hammer one nail to the fence every time he became angry and to lose his temper. The little boy found it hilarious and accepted to do what his father said. The nails drove him to hammer in the fence for 30 times on the first day! Every time he lost his temper, he ran to the fence and hammered a nail. In the next few days, the number of nails hammered on the fence was reduced to half. The little boy found it very difficult to hammer the nails and decided to control his temper. Gradually, the number of nails hammered to the fence was reduced
and the day arrived when no nail was hammered! Yet, the boy did not lose his temper. He told his father that it was several days that he did not hammer any nail and he did not lose his temper! Now, his father told him to remove the nails every day as he had controlled his anger. Several days passed and the boy was able to pull out most of the nails from the fence. However, there remained a few nails that the boy could not pull out. The boy told his father about the same. The father appreciated him and asked him pointing to the hole, ‘What do you see there?’ The boy replied, ‘a hole in the fence!’ He told the boy, “The nails were your bad temper and they were hammered on people. You can remove the nails but still see the holes in the fence. Again, you cannot pull out a few nails. The fence never look the same! It has scars all over! You can stab a man with a knife, but the wound will remain there forever. Your bad temper and anger were like that! Words are more painful than physical abuse! Use words for good. Use them to embrace the relationships. Use them to show your heart!” Inappropriate verbal usage would cause permanent marks than physical damage!
Moral: Let our Words be kind and sweet
K
ids with special needs are often developmentally mismatched with peers their own age, preferring solitary play and obsessive interests to the sort of sharing and teasing and turn-taking and rough-andtumble that gangs of kids engage in together. Finding the right park and the right time to visit can relieve your child of the need to deal with social interactions for which he or she is not yet ready (and for which you do not want to run interference with judgmental parents). If you still want to pull a social element into playground time, though, there are some options. Perhaps your child has a playmate or young relative with whom he or she plays happily -- bring that child along and let them have fun together outdoors. If not, perhaps there's a sympathetic teen in the neighborhood or family you can bring along to interact with your youngster at babysitter rates, under your supervision. And of course, there's no rule saying you can't be the one playing with your child on that playground. Put down your book or your phone and join in.
TOP
Know When to Go
T
he time to leave the playground is while your child is still being successful, and not when fatigue and overstimulation have taken hold. Getting out of there with a kid who's still having a good time is, of course, a significant challenge. It helps to have something really good to use as distraction, so save a treat or a good toy for post-playground enjoyment. Make sure to give adequate time for the things your child really needs or wants to do. Start a "time to go" countdown well before it's time to go so that your hard-transitioning child has plenty of time to make the switch. And give a reward for reasonable compliance -- for some kids, extra TV or computer time works, for others, a hug or a sticker may be sufficient. Give yourself a sticker, too, if you pull this off. Or maybe chocolate.
facts
of your diaphragm and chest muscles. Those contractions help him develop the muscles and motor circuits necessary for actual breathing. So by the time your newborn takes his first gulp of real air, he'll have had plenty of practice. Sense of smell in the womb Starting at around 28 weeks, your baby can smell in the womb the same things that you're smelling. Some of the evidence about fetuses' sense of smell comes from preemies: In one study, peppermint extract was held under the noses of
pre-term babies. Those younger than 28 weeks didn't respond. The older ones reacted by sucking, grimacing, or moving away. The amniotic fluid your baby's floating in actually enhances her sense of smell, Eliot says. Why? Because we're better able to smell things after the odor molecules join with a liquid (like nasal mucus). In addition, during the third trimester, odor molecules pass through the placenta more easily. So when you order that chicken vindaloo in your ninth month, your baby is taking in the aroma right along with you.

FREE THE CHILDREN
O
ne morning before school, Craig Kielburger was looking for the comics section of the newspaper when he noticed an article about a 12 year-old Pakistani boy who was murdered for speaking out against child labor. Craig was only 12 at the time and did not even know what child labor was, but soon learned there were 250 million child laborers in the world! Wanting to put a stop to this, he started Free the Children with a group of classmates. Heidi Baker: Intimacy for Miracles

told there was a contract out on her life. So, they evacuated to their office in the capital city of Maputo. The children gathered in the dining room/church began to sing praise and worship songs at the tops of their lungs. They were beaten and told they could not worship God. One by one, they began to walk the 20 miles to the city office. Reunited, Heidi, Rolland and the orphans called out to God in total desperation. They had lost everything and there was no place for them to go and no food to eat. A friend from the American Embassy came with chili and rice for the Bakers and their 2 children. They prayed over the pots of food and told the 80+ children to sit down. Everyone ate and was full! God has rewarded their faith, and now their property in Pemba is over seven times what was lost in 1997. “Government officials who once persecuted us and beat our children are now thankful for us staying in the country,” says Heidi.
ince moving to Mozambique in 1995, and giving away everything they had, Heidi and Rolland Baker have learned to depend on God for everything. “If God does not show up, we are dead,” says Heidi. Living among the poor has allowed Heidi to see firsthand how when they embrace the life of the Beatitudes, they are truly blessed. “The Beatitudes are God’s recipe for revival. They are a portrait and description of Jesus. When we walk as Jesus walked, we will be blessed,” shares Heidi. She believes God is calling a generation forward to be “laid-down lovers for Him, to walk in the ways He walked, and to follow His Sermon on the Mount as their instructions for their Christian walk.” Heidi says there is something about the poor that delights the heart of God. The reason God breaks forth in Mozambique in great power is because the people are poor in spirit. “I believe Jesus meant that poor in spirit is a posturing of the heart where one is wholly given, fully yielded, completely desperate, and totally dependent on God alone.” Heidi shares one of many occasions in which God showed up right on time. It was a 110-degree Christmas Day. There were hundreds of children that were awaiting a Christmas party at their center. These children included girls who had sold their bodies, bandits, rascals, and children from the village. All had all been invited. The challenge was that there were so many children, but only a limited amount of toy bags available. So, Heidi began to give the presents out first to those children who had never received a present before. Finally, it came down to the older girls, but all that was left were bags with stuffed animals in them. Heidi asked the girls, “What would you like, sweetheart?” And the girl replied, “Beads.” Heidi’s friend and co-worker said “There is nothing in the bags but old stuffed dogs.” Heidi asked her friend to check the bags again. When the lady reached her hand into the bag of stuffed animals she started screaming, “Beads! There are beads in the bag!” All of the girls got beautiful, bright beads for Christmas. “God really is God, and He is much better than Santa Claus,” says Heidi.
MISSIONS IN HER BLOOD
Randy Clark. She was told “the blind will see, the crippled will walk, the dead will be raised from the dead and the poor would hear the good news of Jesus Christ.” After she returned to the mission field in Mozambique she began praying for the blind but not getting good results. Until about a year later, when a blind beggar lady came to church. Heidi was thrilled to pray for her because she wasn’t going to give up on the word that she had received from the Lord. As she prayed for the lady, her eyes began to turn from white to gray and then to brown. The next day she prayed for another woman who was blind since the age of eight. This lady received her sight too. On the third day, Heidi prayed for yet another woman who was blind from birth and she received her sight. All three of these women were named Mama Aida. In Mozambique, Heidi’s name is also Mama Aida. Through these healings God opened Heidi’s eyes to see how the Bride in the West is blind, poor, and thirsty for God’s Word. Although she had worked with the poorest of the OPEN MY EYES poor she says,” I could not understand and I could not see that people in the Western world were poor and Heidi received a prophetic word by a man named starving too, that they were starving for the things of
How a Church greeting saved one man’s life

t is probably the most important thing we do as a church family besides the Sacraments and the Scriptures.” Almost every Sunday, I encourage New Lifers to find someone they have never met and introduce themselves. It is probably the most important thing we do as a church family besides the Sacraments and the Scriptures. A few Sundays ago, a New Lifer turned around and met a man for the first time and probably saved his life. This man had planned to take his own life by driving off a cliff later in the day, but decided to come to New Life beforehand to give God one more chance. When the New Lifer met him at the end of the gathering, he was
obviously distraught. Instead of ignoring the man’s pain, the New Lifer prayed with him and introduced him to one of our pastors who took him to an office and met with him for about 90 minutes. He was a totally different person after that time and assured us he was content to live now and would resume seeing his therapist, which he did, because we checked. All of this, because a New Lifer turned and said hello. Sometimes ministry to people is so simple—look at them, listen to them and care about their stories. Several times in Paul’s letters to the churches, he encouraged them to greet one another with a holy kiss. The kissing part does
not go over so well in Colorado, but the greeting part sure does. If church is an assembly of believers who belong to the same family, then sincere greetings should be a big part of the family gatherings every week. If not, we will become the cold “sit, listen and leave” church. Not every handshake and introduction will save a life, but every close friend I have today started with one of us introducing ourselves and asking some questions. For some, this is super scary, for others it is not. No matter the nervousness, it is a powerful part of the local church becoming a close family and is proof to a distraught world that there is a place for them in God’s healing home.

God. And then God opened my eyes.” FOOD MIRACULOUSLY MULTIPLIED In 1995, Heidi arrived in Mozambique, the poorest country in the world, with her family. The government offered them a horribly dilapidated and neglected "orphanage." After many years of brutal civil war, thousands of children had been left as orphans, displaced and abandoned. There were 80 children and God poured down His love and provided food day by day. A church was planted and hundreds began to turn to the Lord. The former communist directors of the government orphanage were furious ever since Heidi and her husband took over since their extreme corruption and thievery had been stopped. Scheming together with an equally corrupt faction of the government, they concocted accusations and issued a legal decree against Iris Ministries that forbade prayer and worship, Christian singing, and all forms of "unapproved" food and clothes distribution and medical assistance. Since Heidi and the children did not obey the new rules, they had 48 hours to leave the property. Heidi was
Heidi was called to the mission field when she was 16 and living on an Indian Reservation as an American Field student where she was led to the Lord by a Navajo preacher. Several months later she was taken up in a vision for several hours and heard the Lord tell her to be a minister and missionary to Africa, Asia and England. Heidi met her husband Rolland at a small charismatic church in Southern California and married six months later. They left for the mission field two weeks after they were married, with simple instructions from the Lord, one way tickets and thirty dollars in their pockets. They spent 12 years in Asia and saw thousands come to Jesus. After meeting Jackie Pullinger-To and working with her ministry to drug addicts in Hong Kong, their hearts were increasingly broken for the poor and unwanted. In 1992 they left to do their PhDs at Kings' College, University of London. ROLLAND’S HEALTH Rolland left Mozambique for the United States last November for prayer, treatment and rest. During this time he has been under the care of several doctors and has been meeting with counselors. His physician states, “Rolland Baker is currently under my care for a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which has caused some shortterm memory loss due the intense ministry and administrative responsibilities he has overseen for many years. Heidi, staff and board members of Iris Ministries will assume Rolland’s responsibilities until further notice.”
The Goodness of God
Scripture passage: The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalm 23:1- 6 NIV)
The LORD is my shepherd: The first word of the psalm, "The LORD," evokes rich images of the provision and protection of the covenantGod. The emphasis of the psalmist is on "my." The temptation in ancient Israel was to speak only about "our" God, forgetting that the God of Israel is also the God of individuals. The metaphor of God the shepherd it points toward the relation between God and his covenantchildren. The image of shepherd arouses emotions of care, provision, and protection. A good shepherd is personally concerned with the welfare of his sheep. Because of this the designation "my shepherd" is further described by various aspects of God's care: "he makes me lie down-- he leads-- he restores-- he guides.” The shepherd's care is symbolized by the "rod" and the "staff." A shepherd carried a rod to club wild animals and a staff to keep the sheep in control. These two represent God's constant vigilance over his own and bring comfort because of his personal presence and involvement with his sheep. The green pastures are the rich and verdant pastures, where the sheep need not move from place to place to be satisfied. The fields, even parts of the desert, would be lush green during the winter and spring. But in summer and fall the sheep would be led to many places in search of food. God's care is not seasonal but constant and abundant. The sheep have time to rest, as the shepherd makes them to "lie down." The "quiet waters" are the wells and springs where the sheep can drink without being rushed. Through these means, God renews the sheep so that they feel life in his presence is good and worth living. The nature of the shepherd's care also lies in guidance. He leads his own in the "paths of righteousness." "Righteousness" here signifies "right" in the sense of "straight," i.e., the paths that bring the sheep most directly to their destination. He does not unnecessarily tire out his sheep. Even when the "right paths" bring the sheep "through the valley of the shadow of death," there is no need to fear. The idiom "shadow of death" por-
Selie Visa trays death as a deep shadow or as deep darkness. This imagery is consistent with the shepherd metaphor because the shepherd leads the flock through ravines and wadis where the steep and narrow slopes keep out the light. The darkness of the wadis represents the uncertainty of life. The "straight paths" at times need to go through the wadis, but God is still present. The shepherd who guides is always with the sheep. The presence and guidance of the Lord go together. He is bound by his name to be present with his people. The Lord is the host at a banquet table laden with food and drink. Before entering the banquet hall, an ancient host would anoint the honored guests with oil made by adding perfumes to olive oil. The overflowing "cup" symbolizes the care and provisions of God, previously represented by "green pastures" and "quiet waters." In the presence of God, the guests forget their troubles and tears. The goodness of God is demonstrated in his abundant care and promises, evidence of his blessing. The love of God is his covenantal commitment to bless his people with his promises. Instead of being pursued by enemies who seek his destruction, God's goodness and love follow his sheep. He need not fear, because God's loving care follows him throughout life. Experiencing the goodness of the LORD is equivalent to dwelling in the house of the LORD. believer gets a taste of everlasting fellowship with God. Of all animals, why sheep? First, sheep are known to be rather stupid. Sheep are totally dependent on a shepherd. A sheep needs a shepherd. Without a shepherd a sheep lacks protection, provision and guidance. A sheep cannot be trained to be independent of a shepherd and still live a whole life! We are into independence. We don't like other people to control us. We resent it when other people make decisions on our behalf. We prefer to be in the position of strength where others may be dependent upon us but not us upon them.
But when we say "the Lord is my shepherd," at least we are being real. We do not possess the wisdom to live life in independence. The so called "personal autonomy" -- life lived independent of God and all others -- is a destructive and life-distorting myth. A second thing we learn about sheep is that sheep are prone to wander. Though a sheep needs a shepherd, it is stubborn enough to still go astray and gets lost. A sheep follows his nose or his stomach to whatever source of food and comfort he finds. And in the process, he gets into trouble. The Prophet Isaiah wrote "All we like sheep have gone astray each after his own way." (53:6) God declares through Jeremiah: "My people have become lost sheep.” That is who we really are, constantly seeking fulfillment wandering here and there, trying this and that-- all the time wandering further from the only real source of authentic life. The third thing we note is that sheep are vulnerable. Because a sheep needs a shepherd and because sheep are prone to wander, sheep become vulnerable to wild animals of prey. There are false shepherds too. You and I tend to follow any shepherd who will promise false security or deceitful happiness. For all our intelligence, we are sheep -- vulnerable to anything that promises to meet the profound longings of the heart. So when the scriptures refer to us as sheep, it's not because we're all that cute and cuddly. It's because, like sheep, we are stupid beings, dependent beings, wandering beings and vulnerable beings -- especially when we've declared independence from the shepherd. We may resent the picture. The image isn't that flattering but it is right on target. Follow the Good Shepherd: In describing the Lord as a shepherd, David wrote out of his own experience because he had spent his early years caring for sheep. Sheep are completely dependent on the Shepherd for provision, guidance, and protection. The New Testament calls Jesus the good shepherd; the great Shepherd; and the Chief Shepherd. As the Lord is the good shepherd, so we are his sheep. When we allow God our shepherd to guide us, we have contentment. When we choose to sin, however, we go our own way. Death casts a frightening shadow over us because we are entirely helpless in its presence. Our strength and courage cannot overcome death. It has the final word. Only one person can walk with us through death's dark valley and bring us safely to the other side -- the God of life, our shepherd. Humankind can live free from fear because, like the good shepherd, God will always provide, protect, and guide this flock. When you recognize the good shepherd, follow him!

negotiations to 'hopefully' Uneasy calm in Bishada; Rahul, Rafale conclude by year-end: IAF chief Kejriwal visit victim's family Indian Air Force mulls moving victim’s family to its area

New Delhi, OctOber 3 (Pti): Terming as "unfortunate" the lynching of a serving air warrior's father over rumours of eating beef, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha said they are looking at the possibility of moving the family to an Air Force area. Asserting that such acts cannot be accepted, Raha said senior officers were in touch with Corporal Mohammad Sartaj and his family. "Unfortunate incident or accident I would say. It is unfortunate that a serving Air Force personnel's family has been affected resulting in death in the family. We are already in touch (with the family)," he said on Saturday while replying to questions at his annual news conference ahead of Air Force Day. "Whatever protection is required, we are giving it to him. We are trying to move (them) to some Air Force area. We are with him and our people are there to assist the family," he said. IAF sources said Sartaj is currently posted in Chennai and efforts are on to either enable the rest of the family to move there or transfer him to an area where his family can be. Raha said he is trying to meet Sartaj himself to take care of his and the family's welfare. Asked if he would be writing to the government in this regard, Raha said, "Writing to the state government or central government, I think is superfluous because everybody has understood in the government that such things cannot be accepted. Adequate actions are being taken at the government level, both central as well as in the state," he said. He said whenever there is a security problem concerning any armed forces personnel, the force gets in touch with local authorities. "We write to them, we interact with them. Our local Air Force police interacts with them to provide protection to any armed forces personnel," he said.
DADri (UP), OctOber 3 (Pti): Uneasy calm today prevailed in Bishada village where a man was lynched over suspected beef consumption as Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal paid a visit to the bereaved family, with the latter deprecating attempts to communalizing the tragedy. After being initially stopped by the local administration from visiting the village in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh on Delhi's outskirts, Kejriwal met the grieving family and lashed out at political parties "spreading poison" between Hindus and Muslims for votebank politics. Bishada's uneasy tryst with unprecedented media glare and steady stream of politicians erupted in anger as locals forced the administration to prevent Kejriwal and some state Congress leaders from entering the village. They were, however, later allowed inside. The authorities said they have sealed the village following a request from the victim's son for "peace" in their hour of grief. District Magistrate N P Singh had yesterday said the victim's son Sartaj had given a written request that the family does not want to meet anyone as a steady stream of visitors was causing harassment to them. "One political party is trying to consolidate Hindu
vote bank, while another is trying to make Muslim their vote bank by spreading poison between the two communities. It is wrong," Kejriwal later said. "If somebody thinks Hindu religion is in danger and that is why Muslims are being targeted, then he cannot be a Hindu," he said. The Chief Minister questioned why AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and Union Minister Mahesh Sharma were not stopped by the administration yesterday from visiting the family and alleged that other parties were vitiating the atmosphere for political gains. "What happened in Dadri was against humanity. It was totally wrong. Who benefited from it, neither Hindus nor Muslims. Only political parties and politicians are benefiting," Kejriwal said. Owaisi had yesterday termed the brutal killing of Mohammed Iqlakh by a 200-strong mob on Monday night following rumours that he and his family had slaughtered a calf and eaten its meat as a "preplanned murder" because of the victim's religious persuasion. The local BJP MP and Union Minister Mahesh Sharma had called the shocking incident as an "accident" and said while the guilty, who bludgeoned Iquakh to death, be brought to book, innocent Hindus

PAtNA, OctOber 3 (iANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said the people of the country have no faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's empty promises. Addressing her first election rally in Bihar in Kahalgaon assembly constituency in Bhagalpur district since the dates of the assembly polls were announced last month, she said: "People have no faith in Modi's hollow promises." Stating that the upcoming Bihar assembly polls would give a new direction to the country, she said: "Vote for the grand alliance of Congress, JD-U (Janata Dal-United) and RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) in the polls to get rid of empty promises of Modi." She said the prime minister spent more time in foreign than in his own country and loves hugging powerful people only, adding: "Modi's government is working for industrialists only, this government is anti-poor and anti-farmer. She blamed the government wrong policies for causing inflation in the country and leading to a big army of unemployed youths.Gandhi also said reservation for Dalits and Other Backward Classes was as per the constitution and no one could end it.She is scheduled to address her second rally in Vajirganj assembly seat in Gaya district on Saturday evening.
New YOrk, OctOber 3 (Pti): Pakistan has said it was regrettable that instead of responding to its goodwill gesture, India is "interfering" in its internal matters and accused it of supporting terrorism. Pakistan Prime Minister's National Security and Foreign Affairs Advisor Sartaj Aziz said that Kashmir was among the oldest unresolved international disputes at the UN forum. Speaking at the Annual Coordination Meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers here yesterday, he also accused Indian security forces of human rights violations and ceasefire violations. He asked the OIC mem-
should not be harassed in the name of investigation. Even the District Magistrate had yesterday said the visitors were trying to "communalise" the issue which was a matter of concern. Rahul Gandhi, who recently returned from abroad, also visited Bishada and met the family members of Iqlakh. "In Dadri to meet Mohammad Akhlaq's family," he tweeted after meeting them.
Two main accused arrested
The Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday arrested two main accused — Shivam and Vishal — in connection with the Dadri lynching case. The total number of accused arrested in Dadri lynching has gone up to 10. On Monday night, following rumours of cow slaughter, 50-year-old Mohammad Ikhlaq was killed by a mob in Greater Noida's Bisada village just outside his house. As tension gripped the village and spread to nearby areas, another mob went on the rampage on Tuesday morning in Ooncha Amirpur — barely 5km from Bisada — demanding death penalty for those involved in cow slaughter. Iqlakh's family had alleged that Vishal forced the local temple priest to announce that cow was slaughtered and stored in their house.
Wrong to kill anyone for eating beef: Lalu Prasad PAtNA, OctOber 3 (iANS): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday said that it was wrong to kill anyone for eating beef and created a fresh controversy by saying that some Hindus also eat beef. "It was wrong to kill a man for eating beef in Dadri (Uttar Pradesh). Everyone is free to consume food items of his choice, "Lalu told the media here. "What happened in Dadri was a communal violence. The BJP is responsible for such violence," the former Bihar chief minister said. He also asked whether Hindus are not eating meat. The RJD chief said that some of those living in foreign countries or visit abroad eat beef and even in the country, some Hindus eat beef. "What is the difference between beef and mutton for those who consume meat," Lalu asked, prompting senior BJP leader and Union Minister Griraj Singh to ask him to take back his words. Lalu also said: "People should not eat beef at all, it is the cause of many diseases and not good for health." Singh has threatened that BJP will take this issue to the ongoing campaign for Bihar assembly polls if Lalu failed to take back his words.
India will talk only if BJP goes: Pakistani daily iSlAmAbAD, OctOber 3 (iANS): India-Pakistan peace talks will be possible only when the BJP is voted out in India, a Pakistani newspaper said on Saturday. The Nation said in an editorial that despite Islamabad's attempts, New Delhi was not ready for reconciliation. "The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) might hopefully lose power soon, and maybe we can start (peace talks) again with a more level-headed government," it said. The editorial came after Pakistan's permanent representative to UN, Maliha Lodhi, handed over to the UN three dossiers allegedly

containing "proof" of Indian involvement in terrorist activities in Pakistan. "As far as the Indian government goes, Pakistan is the primary sponsor of terrorism, and they will stick by this claim no matter what those dossiers state," the daily said. "Even if the audio and video evidence present in these files prove beyond doubt that India is indeed sponsoring state terrorism in Pakistan, nothing will change." The Nation said: "For now, India is at an international high, and (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi is a superstar. This will fade."
He "regretted that instead of responding to Pakistan s gesture of goodwill, the Indian side was not only interfering in Pakistan's internal matters but was also supporting terrorism inside Pakistan," the re-
lease said. Aziz also said the denial of right of self-determination to Kashmiri people continued to stain the collective conscience of the international community. "He clarified that elec-
New Delhi, OctO ber 3 (iANS): Admitting to a shortage of fighters, the IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, on Saturday expressed hope that the negotiations for purchasing 36 Rafale jets off-the-shelf from France would conclude by the year-end. He said the negotiations for the deal, finalised during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's France visit in April, was progressing well. "I am hopeful that the negotiations for the deal will not go beyond this year," the IAF chief said at the annual press conference ahead of Air Force Day on October 8. "This is my feeling," he added. It would take two to three years for the first of the two Rafale squadrons to be operational, Raha said. He also said that the Indian Air Force (IAF) required at least six squadrons of medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA), which would translate into over 100 jets, and that the Rafale was a good followon option. But the government would take a final decision on this. "Definitely, we would

I am just a normal girl: Malala Yousafzai
New Delhi, OctOber 3 (iANS): Malala Yousafzai, the youngest ever Nobel prize winner, child and women's rights activist and the inspiration for a film, thinks that she is just a normal girl and is doing what is the "responsibility" of all. "I am just a normal girl and I am doing what is the responsibility of all us which is to stand for what is right in your society and to stand against injustices," the Pakistani activist told news channel India Today in an interview. Malala, who survived an assassination attempt on her by the Taliban, has since become one of the most famous teenagers in the world. "I cannot tolerate women being denied the right to have an identity and girls being denied the right to have an education. That is what I am standing for and I think this is the right thing we all should do," she said. Yousafzai along with Indian chil-

dren's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi was the recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for her struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the rights of all children to education. She received the prize when she was 17. Asked whether it was difficult for her to be famous, Malala said: "You are right, it is a bit hard. Peo-
ple do ask for pictures. But it is an honour, if someone loves you and really takes care of you. I feel honoured that people take care of me and they are supporting me." "In order to fight the power of extremism, terrorism, we have to empower our young generation through education. The weapons that we need are our books and
pens and our voice that is the most important thing," she said. Questioned about the Taliban and targeting of children, Malala said: "It is a matter of horror and sadness that children have been targeted. This is unimaginable. It is sad that the politicians only grieve for few days but do nothing. We hope something is done. Hope safety is ensured to everyone." She said there is a need for a strong leadership in her country. "I also believe that all leaders need to do something. Why are they silent if terrorism is happening in Swat Valley. Why are they silent if girls are denied education or women are flogged on the streets." "Where are our leaders? And that really motivated me to become a leader for my country but as I am turning 18, I realise that there are more ways to bring change in society. So it is not a final decision yet. But I do feel there is a need for strong leadership."
like to have MMRCA variety of aircraft. At least about six squadrons to my mind. Let us see, there may be some other alternatives as well," ACM Raha said. Asked if the additional four squadrons of aircraft would be Rafales or if there was a possibility of other players getting into play, Raha said, "I may wish to have Rafale. But there are equally good aircraft. So if the deal is good and the government decides we need to have six of similar squadrons of MMRCAs." "I want the capability of Rafale-type aircraft. So, the government will have a look at it and based on urgency and the type of contract is signed with Dassault Aviation, further decisions may be taken by the government. I cannot predict," he said. The air chief admitted that the IAF was short in strength. "We are currently short in strength... we need to replace many squadrons. The need is there for more. But it has to be viable in terms of cost, in terms transfer of technology and in terms of Make in India policy that the government is trying to implement," he said.
"So if those terms and conditions are good then I am sure we will be able to get more. But as of now we are looking at 36," he said. The Rafale had in 2012 received the IAF nod for 126 jets in a $20 billion deal in the face of a stiff competition from five other manufacturers. As the deal could not work out, another deal for purchasing 36 Rafale combat jets in fly-away condition was inked during the prime minister's visit to France in April. The IAF had expressed an urgent need for the 126 combat jets to primarily replace its ageing fleet of Soviet-era MiG-21 planes and to plug the gap caused by the delay in the development of the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA). The IAF currently has 33 combat squadrons against a sanctioned strength of 39.5, which is sought to be raised to 42. A parliamentary committee, in a report earlier this year had said that by 2022, the IAF would have just 25 squadrons, losing "even the slight edge over a rival neighbouring nation (Pakistan)".
VADODArA, OctOber 3 (Pti): Amid the ongoing agitation by patidars for quota, an organization of brahmans in Gujarat has demanded reservation for community members in government jobs and educational institutes in the state. All Gujarat Brahm Samaj (AGBS) also wants the government to pay monthly salary to brahman priests serving in temples across the state. The organization's officer-bearers held a day-long meeting here on Friday and passed a number of resolutions in support of their various demands, including reservation and salary for brahman priests, its president Shailesh Joshi said. Briefing reporters at the end of meeting, Joshi said, "The BJP government in Gujarat should follow the example of the Tamil Nadu government and give monthly salary to all the temple priests in the state." He said the government should set up a Brahman Vikas Board to look after 55 lakh economically weaker brahmans, whose population in Gujarat he put at 62 lakh.
Violence, assault on media mar Bengal local body polls, probe ordered kOlkAtA, OctOber 3 (iANS): Local body polls in four pockets of West Bengal were held on Saturday, but were marred by violence, allegations of booth capturing and assaults on media persons that left 15 of them bloodied and injured. In the last battle before next year's assembly polls, elections were held for the Asansol Municipal Corporation in Burdwan district, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation in North 24 Parganas district and the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad in Darjeeling district. Two voters were injured when they were fired upon, while another sustained bomb splinter injures in Asansol's ward No.14. Clashes between CPI-M and Trinamool activists were reported from Raniganj in Burdwan district. In Rajarhat, clashes between the Trinamool and the Congress led to seven two-wheelers being set on fire. A Congress candidate was arrested. But the worst violence was seen in Bidhannagar -- a posh satellite township of Kolkata -- where media persons faced the ire of alleged Trinamool Congress workers and hoodlums as they tried to film and click photos of electoral malpractices. Calling the attacks "preplanned", news channels Zee 24 Ghanta and ABP Ananda claimed "miscreants harboured by the state's ruling Trinamool Congress" carried out the assaults. While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered a probe, the opposition tore into the Trinamool for the attacks on the media. Representatives of ABP Ananda, 24 Ghanta, Kolkata TV, Newstime, The Telegraph, ETV News Bangla, and Ananda Bazar Patrika were victims of the serial assaults.

Obama warns Putin of 'quagmire' in Syria WASHINGTON/MOSCOW, OCTOber 3 (reuTerS): U.S. President Barack Obama warned Russia on Friday that its bombing campaign against Syrian rebels will suck Moscow into a "quagmire," after a third straight day of air raids in support of President Bashar al-Assad. At a White House news conference, Obama frequently assailed Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he accused of acting out of a position of weakness to defend a crumbling, authoritarian ally. Friday prayers were cancelled in insurgentheld areas of Syria's Homs province hit by Russian warplanes this week, with residents concerned that mosques could be targeted, according to one person from the area. Putin's decision to launch strikes on Syria marks a dramatic escalation of foreign involvement in a more than four-yearold civil war in which every major country in the region has a stake. It also gives fuel to domestic critics of Obama who say his unwillingness to act on Syria has allowed Moscow to stage its biggest show of force in the Middle East in decades. But the U.S. president warned that Russia and
Iran, Assad's main backer in the Muslim world, have isolated the majority of Syrians and angered their Sunni Muslim neighbours. "An attempt by Russia and Iran to prop up Assad and try to pacify the population is just going to get them stuck in a quagmire and it won't work," Obama said. The Syria campaign is the first time Moscow has sent forces into combat beyond the frontiers of the former Soviet Union since the USSR's disastrous Afghanistan campaign of the 1980s, a bold move by Putin to extend Russia's influence beyond its neighbourhood. It comes at a low point in Russia's relations with the West, a year after the United States and EU imposed financial sanctions on Moscow for annexing territory from Ukraine. Obama on Friday offered to work with Russia to bring peace to Syria, but he took several digs at Putin, with whom he has a frosty relationship. A meeting between the two at the United Nations this week seems to have done little to produce a thaw. "Mr. Putin had to go into Syria not out of strength, but out of weakness because his client Mr. Assad was crumbling and it was insufficient

for him to send arms and money," Obama said. He played down international support for Moscow's strategy, saying it paled in comparison to the number of countries backing U.S. air raids on Islamic State. The U.S. president has been deeply reluctant to use more military force in Syria, after America's experience of long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama also hit back at critics who say his Syria strategy of bombing Islamic State and supporting moderate rebels is failing. "I hear people offering
up half-baked ideas as if they are solutions or trying to downplay the challenges involved in the situation. What I'd like to see people ask is, specifically, precisely, what exactly would you do and how would you fund it and how would you sustain it? And typically, what you get is a bunch of mumbo jumbo," he said. BOMBING INSURGENTS Russia bombed Syria for a third day in a row on Friday, mainly hitting areas held by rival insurgent groups rather than the Islamic State fighters it said it
was targeting and drawing an increasingly angry response from the West. The U.S.-led coalition that is waging its own air war against Islamic State called on the Russians to halt strikes on targets other than Islamic State. In Syria, Islamic State is one of many groups of insurgents fighting against Assad. Washington and its Western and regional allies say Russia is using it as a pretext to bomb other groups that oppose Assad. Some of these groups have received training and weapons from Assad's for-
eign enemies, including the United States. Also on Friday, Putin held frosty talks with France's Francois Hollande in Paris, the Russian leader's first meeting with a Western leader since launching the strikes two days after he gave an address to the United Nations making the case to back Assad. Warplanes were seen flying high above an area of Syria's Homs province where Friday prayers were cancelled. The area is held by anti-Assad rebels, but has no significant presence of Islamic State fighters.
"The streets are almost completely empty and there is an unannounced curfew," said a resident, speaking from the town of Rastan which was hit in the first day of Russian air strikes. Islamic State also cancelled prayers in areas it controls, according to activists from its de facto capital Raqqa. A Russian air strike on Thursday destroyed a mosque in the town of Jisr al-Shughour, captured from government forces by an alliance of Islamist insurgents earlier this year, activists said. Western countries and Russia say they have a common enemy in Islamic State. But they also have very different allies and opposing views of how to resolve a war that has killed at least 250,000 people and driven more than 10 million from their homes. Washington and its allies oppose both Islamic State and Assad, blaming him for attacks on civilians that have radicalised the opposition and insisting that he has no place in a post-war settlement. Lebanese sources have told Reuters that hundreds of Iranian troops have also arrived in recent days in Syria to participate in a major ground offensive alongside government troops
and their Lebanese and Iraqi Shi'ite militia allies. Syria's foreign minister said the U.S.-led coalition's campaign against Islamic State was bound to fail. "Air strikes are useless unless they are conducted in cooperation with the Syrian army, the only force in Syria that is combating terrorism," Walid alMoualem said in a speech to United Nations General Assembly in New York. Moscow said on Friday its latest strikes had hit 12 Islamic State targets, but most of the areas it described were in western and northern parts of the country, while Islamic State is mostly present in the east. The Russian Defence Ministry said its Sukhoi-34, Sukhoi-24M and Sukhoi-25 warplanes had flown 18 sorties hitting targets that included a command post and a communications centre in the province of Aleppo, a militant field camp in Idlib and a command post in Hama. A Defence Ministry official, Igor Konashenkov, later told Russian news agencies the Air Force had conducted 14 flights in Syria on Friday and made six strikes against Islamic State targets. The ministry was not immediately available to comment on the apparent discrepancy with the earlier figures.
Sudan accuses ICC of US warplanes strike kills at least 16 targeting African leaders at MSF run hospital in Afghanistan uNITeD NATIONS, OCTOber 3 (re uTerS): Sudan's Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour on Friday used the annual gathering of the 193 members of the United Nations to rail against the International Criminal Court (ICC), which he said has become a political tool to target African leaders. The Hague-based ICC has accused Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of genocide and crimes against humanity in his campaign to crush a revolt in Sudan's western Darfur region. The Darfur conflict began in 2003 when mainly non-Arab tribes took up arms against the Arab-led government in Khartoum. In a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Ghandour said "the relationship between the Security Council and the International Criminal Court ... has shown again and again that the scourge of politicization has turned it (the ICC) into a tool for targeting African leaders."
Others indicted by the ICC include Laurent Gbagbo, former president of the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire, and Muammar Gaddafi, the late leader of Libya. Ghandour went on to call for "the implementation of a structural reform process of the United Nations and the Security Council, in conformity with the principal of fair and equitable representation of all countries." "The current international system ... can no longer cope with the developments and major transformations occurring worldwide," Ghandour said. He did not specifically mention the 2009 indictment of Bashir. He said Sudan had made "commendable achievements" in human rights, citing the growing role of women in politics. But Human Rights Watch said last month that a government militia in Darfur carried out killings and mass rapes of civilians over the past year and a half.
The massacres in Darfur of a decade ago have eased, but the insurgency continues and Khartoum has sharply escalated the conflict over the past year, U.N. officials and human rights groups say. Members of the ICC are obliged to act on arrest warrants, but Bashir, who rejects the court's authority, has managed to travel in Africa, the Middle East and beyond. A month ago Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed the Sudanese president in China as an "old friend". Beijing, like Washington, is not a member of the ICC. Bashir fled South Africa in June after a court ruled he should be banned from leaving pending the outcome of a hearing on his possible arrest. Pretoria disregarded the ruling. Originally Khartoum had said Bashir would travel to New York this year's General Assembly session to attend a debate on global anti-poverty goals but he did not attempt to travel to the United States.
KAbuL, OCTOber 3 (reuTerS): An airstrike hit a hospital run by Medecins Sans Frontieres in the Afghan city of Kunduz on Saturday, killing at least 16 people in what the U.S. military called possible “collateral damage” in the battle to oust Taliban insurgents. Frantic MSF staff phoned military officials at NATO in Kabul and Washington after the attack, and bombs continued to rain down near the medical facility for nearly an hour, one official from the aid group said. At least 37 people were wounded and many patients and staff still missing, it added. The U.S. military promised to investigate the incident, which could renew concerns over the use of its air power in the conflict. Afghan government forces backed by U.S. air power have fought to drive the Taliban out of the northern provincial capital since the militants seized it six days ago, in the biggest victory of their near 14-year insurgency. One resident, Khodaidad, told Reuters the Taliban had been using the hospital buildings for cover during

the fighting on Friday. “I could hear sounds of heavy gunfire, explosions and airplanes throughout the night,” he added. “There were several huge explosions and it sounded like the roof was falling on me,” he added. U.S. forces launched an air strike at 2.15 a.m. (2145 GMT), spokesman, Col. Brian Tribus, said in a statement. “The strike may have resulted in collateral damage to a nearby medical facility ... This incident is under investigation,” he added. At the aid group’s
bombed-out hospital, one wall of a building had collapsed, scattering fragments of glass and wooden door frames, and three rooms were ablaze, said Saad Mukhtar, director of public health in Kunduz. “Thick black smoke could be seen rising from some of the rooms ... The fighting is still going on, so we had to leave.” “DEEPLY SHOCKED” Almost 200 patients and employees were in the hospital, the only one in the region that can deal with major injuries, said Mede-
cins Sans Frontieres, which raised the death toll to at least 16 by late on Saturday. “We are deeply shocked by the attack, the killing of our staff and patients and the heavy toll it has inflicted on healthcare in Kunduz,” operations director Bart Janssens said in a statement. MSF said it gave the location of the hospital to both Afghan and U.S. forces several times in the past few months, most recently this week, to avoid being caught in crossfire. MSF said it had treated almost 400 patients in
the 150-bed hospital since fighting broke out, most for gunshot wounds. So many patients have flooded in that the hospital had to put them in offices and on mattresses on the floor. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s spokesman said last week there would be no airstrikes inside the city because of the risk of mass civilian casualties. Ghani’s predecessor, former President Hamid Karzai, fell out with his backers in Washington in part over the number of civilians killed by bombs earlier in the nearly 14-yearold war, America’s longest military conflict. The U.S. embassy in Kabul said in a statement it “mourns for the individuals and families affected by the tragic incident”. The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was “deeply shocked” by the incident. “This is an appalling tragedy,” said Jean-Nicolas Marti, head of the ICRC in Afghanistan. “Such attacks undermine the capacity of humanitarian organisations to assist the Afghan people at a time when they most urgently need it.”
War of words grips Nobel Peace Prize committee as award looms At least 30 dead in OSLO, OCTOber 3 (reuTerS): An unusual war of words is tarnishing the staid Nobel Peace Prize committee just before its main task next week - picking a 2015 winner from candidates such as Pope Francis, Colombian peace negotiators or those helping Syrian refugees. The secretive fivemember Norwegian committee is under an unwelcome spotlight after Geir Lundestad, its secretary for 25 years until 2015, questioned the wisdom of some prizes and poked criticism at many members in a book this month. Lundestad revealed, for instance, that the 2009 prize to U.S. President Barack Obama had failed to live up to the committee's hopes, that one member almost quit in disgust at the award to climate campaigner and ex-U.S. vice president Al Gore in 2007, and that one member spoke out against any prize for a pope. In retaliation for the book, "Secretary of Peace", the committee issued a rare statement, accusing him of
breaking a 50-year confidentiality rule. And he is being evicted from an office at the Norwegian Nobel Institute where he served as director and attended committee meetings, without a vote. This has touched off the worst row since a proIsraeli committee member quit in 1994, denouncing the inclusion of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in a joint prize with Israel's Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres for peace efforts. The book piles pressure on the usually anonymous committee, which tries to cultivate an aura of Olympian detachment in judging world affairs, to pick a worthy winner this year for the eight million Swedish crown ($955,000) prize. Thorbjoern Jagland, an ex-Norwegian prime minister and former committee chair who is still on the committee, hit out at Lundestad's criticisms on national NRK television. "I am not sure it strengthens the (committee's) reputation when he writes that the current lead-
er (Kaci Kullmann Five) is weak, the previous one (Jagland) was actually a fool and the one before (Ole Danbolt Mjoes) hadn't a clue about foreign policy." Other experts reckon the prize will rebound. "It takes some of the mystery out of the prize," said Kristian Berg Harpviken, head of the Peace Research Institute, Oslo. But he said the dispute may blow over: "The prizes speak for themselves." Asle Sveen, a historian of the prize, also said: "We have a peace prize next
week. The internal strife will soon be forgotten." Kullmann Five will announce the 2015 winner on Friday, Oct. 9 at 0900 GMT. Jagland was so irked by Lundestad that he issued a statement rejecting suggestions that he had relied on Lundestad's drafts of speeches at prize ceremonies, rather than write his own. Lundestad says the prize, named after Swedish philanthropist and industrialist Alfred Nobel, will easily shake off the internal details he describes,

Guatemala landslide
SANTA CATArINA PINuLA, OCTOber 3 (AFP): At least 30 people were dead and several hundred missing a day after a landslide smashed through a village on the outskirts of the Guatemalan capital, officials said. More than 500 rescue workers, police and soldiers, as well as desperate residents, clawed away at the debris with picks and shovels searching for survivors all day and into the late evening, before suspending the painstaking hunt for the night. Families reported receiving text messages from people they believed to still be trapped, more than 24 hours after the landslide struck the village of El Cambray II, in the municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula. Authorities said that about 600 people are missing and they expect the death toll to rise. Their estimate is based on the 125 homes that Thursday's landslide destroyed or damaged after heavy rain. The affected area is about 15 kilometers (10 miles) east of the capital Guatemala City. "We have 29 dead people
identified and one still unidentified," Sergio Cabanas, incident commander for the government's disaster reduction office CONRAD, told AFP. The victims include at least three children. Thirty-four people were pulled out alive from the mud and rubble, while 25 others were injured, CONRAD officials said. The impact of the heavy rain was exacerbated by a nearby river, officials said. Municipal authorities had urged the community several times to relocate, most recently in November last year. Amid the debris Josue Coloma, a 40-year-old mechanic, anxiously looked on as a rescue crew dug through the mud searching for any sign of his two nephews, ages 11 and 14. "My nephews should be in the place where I'm standing," Coloma told AFP. "I have trust in God that they are well." Two other relatives who were with the kids at the time of the landslide were pulled out alive, Coloma said, while their parents survived because they were out of the house at a religious service.

Bridget Jones Is BAcK n Friday, Working Title offered a sneak peek at Bridget Jones’s Baby via the first still of star Renée Zellweger reprising her role as the beloved British title character. The photo shows Bridge hugging an iPad—a cheeky nod to the publishing executive leaping into the future by making her diary digital. No chance of Mark Darcy paging through her private thoughts without a passcode here, thank you very much. According to The Telegraph, Friday was the first day of filming on the new movie, directed by Sharon Maguire, who helmed the first film in the series. Per new reports, Bridget Jones’s Baby will be based on Fielding’s columns and not her latest novel, Mad About the Boy, which killed off Firth’s character. The new movie is believed to catch up with Bridge as she enters her 40s and juggles her career as a publishing executive, a pregnancy, and, we presume, a delightfully clumsy romantic life. Bridget Jones’s Baby will reportedly arrive in theaters in September 2016.

ISL 2: Champions Kolkata beat Chennai Sania-Martina win
C M Y K
C M Y K
ChENNai, OCTOBER 3 (aGENCiES): "I love it when there is pressure", said Atletico de Kolkata's new marquee player Helder Postiga in the prematch press conference. With everyone expecting Postiga to show why he is such a highly-regarded player, the Portugal international certainly did not disappoint, scoring two goals – including the first of the Indian Super League 2015 – to knock the stuffing out of the home team Chennaiyin FC. The majority of the fans at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai were left disappointed, as a Postiga double and a neat header from Valmiro Lopes Rocha gave Atletico de Kolkata a 3-2 win over Chennaiyin FC in the opening match of ISL 2015. Chennaiyin came from behind to level once, in the first half from Jeje Lalpekhlua, but a second comeback, which needed two goals, fell just short, as an Elano penalty late on wasn't enough to give the home team a share of the spoils. The game started on a bright note for Chennaiyin, with Elano looking dangerous almost immediately, as a wonderful turn and forward movement earned the home team a corner in the opening moments. A goal might have come off that corner as well, had Jeje, the outstanding Chennaiyin player of the first half, been able to direct his header on target. Atletico had hardly got into the game, but, as is so often the case, they found themselves a goal up thanks to a massive error from the home team in the 13th minute.
Wuhan Open title
A harmless freekick was floated in by Borja, with Edel Bete coming out to catch the ball. It looked like that was that, only for the Chennaiyin goalkeeper to crash into his own teammate Mailson Alves, and ibn the process drop the ball. That dropped ball fell to Postiga, who netted into the open net for the easiest goal he will ever score in the ISL this season. Atletico, after the opening goal, started to take control of the match for the next ten minutes or so, dictating the pace of play – which to be honest was quite slow, understandable considering the heat and humidity in Chennai – to try and frustrate Chennaiyin further. That control, though, would not last too long, as
Fikru Teferra, not too impressive against his former team, fired a shot wide, before causing chaos in the ATK box, which allowed Jeje to equalise. A cross from Elano, menacing at time, ineffective the other, saw Fikru challenge for the high ball with the Atletico de Kolkata goalkeeper Amrinder Singh, with the ball then dropping for Jeje to slot home from close-range. The score held till halftime, and with the humidity getting to both teams, the pace of play slowed down even more, with a draw looking likely. However, Marco Materazzi, knowing the importance of picking up home wins in the ISL, sent in Stiven Mendoza – he had already brought on
Bernard Mendy as a halftime substitute – to try and increase the pace of the Chennaiyin attacks. Apart from a halfchance here and there, though, Mendoza could not do much, and Atletico, playing the perfect away game, snatched the winner on 70 minutes. A misplaced headed backpass from Mendy allowed Postiga, ever the poacher, to nip in, shirk the challenge of Lalhmangaihsanga Ralte, before expertly finishing through the legs of Bete. Postiga had to be taken off immediately after getting injured, but that proved to be a blessing in disguise for Atletico, as the man who replaced him – Valmiro Lopes Rocha – finished the game off on 76
minutes, heading in from six yards off a cross from Iain Hume. It could have been a lot worse for Chennaiyin as the home team started to fall apart, with Mendy giving away a penalty for handling the ball inside the area. Javier Lara Grande, however, let Chennaiyin and Mendy off the hook by firing in a weak spotkick, which Bete kept out well. Two goals in the final ten minutes, however, was always going to be impossible, and despite a concerted effort, Atletico, always so much more assured at the back, held on for the opening victory of ISL 2015, despite a penalty from Elano causing a few heartaches for the away side in the final minutes.
Coke, McDonald's join sponsor call for FIFA's Blatter to resign
NEW YORK, OCTOBER 3 (REUTERS): Major football sponsors on Friday issued coordinated calls for the immediate resignation of FIFA president Sepp Blatter in the most significant move by companies supporting the sport since a bribery and corruption scandal erupted at world football's governing body last May. Coca-Cola Co, McDonald's, Visa, and Budweiser owner Anheuser-Busch InBev, companies that have long linked their brand names to football, on Friday demanded Blatter step down immediately in a strong push for change at the organisation. Blatter earlier announced he would resign in February next year. The sponsor statements, all using similar language, came just a week after Swiss authorities said they were opening a criminal investigation into Blatter, the 79-year-old Swiss national who has lead FIFA for the past 17 years. AB InBev said it has

been "actively engaged" in the FIFA reform process as part of a group of sponsors. "Every day that passes, the image and reputation of FIFA continues to tarnish," Coca Cola said. "FIFA needs comprehensive and urgent reform, and that can only be accomplished through a truly independent approach." Visa and McDonald's joined the call for Blatter to
step aside. "The events of recent weeks have continued to diminish the reputation of FIFA and public confidence in its leadership," McDonald's said in an emailed statement. Blatter responded by saying he would not resign, setting the stage for a battle over who should take the helm in the next few months before February when elections are set
for a new FIFA president. In a statement from his U.S. lawyer Richard Cullen, Blatter said he believed leaving office would not be in FIFA's best interest or advance the needed reforms of the organisation. Scandals surrounding global football exploded in May, when 14 football officials and sports marketing executives were indicted on U.S. charges of racketeering, money laundering and wire fraud in relation to bribery schemes that dated back decades. Last Friday, the Swiss Office of the Attorney General said it opened a criminal investigation into Blatter on suspicion of criminal mismanagement and misappropriation of funds. It was the first time that authorities investigating corruption in the world's most popular sport had pointed the finger directly at Blatter. He has denied wrongdoing and his U.S. attorney said he was cooperating with the Swiss probe. FIFA's awarding of the
2018 and 2022 competitions to Russia and Qatar is one of the strands under scrutiny from U.S. and Swiss authorities investigating corruption in the organisation, a worry for tournament sponsors including McDonald's, Coca-Cola and Visa. "One of the things consumers are looking for in brands today is for them to be responsible," said Trevor Wade from the brand consultancy firm Landor. She said the moves by the sponsors was a way to take a public stand about something they think matters to customers. It is an unprecedented decision by companies that have largely stood back as developments in the case unfolded in recent months, said Jaimie Fuller a co-founder of campaign group #NewFifaNow. "The drastic nature of this call stresses the extreme problems faced by FIFA," Fuller said, "and should show everybody how the sports governing body is teetering on the abyss."
WUhaN (ChiNa), OCTOBER 3 (iaNS): The top seeded pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis defeated the Romanian duo of Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu in straight sets to win the doubles title at the Wuhan Open tennis tournament here on Saturday. This was the seventh title that the Sania-Martina combination have won this year. The top ranked pair have also won consecutive Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the US Open earlier in 2015. LONDON, OCTOBER 3 (REUTERS): Yannick Bolasie scored at home for the first time in nearly three years as Crystal Palace beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Selhurst Park to move into third place in the Premier League on Saturday. Yohan Cabaye sealed the victory with an 89th-minute penalty after Chris Brunt tripped man-of-the-match Wilfried Zaha just inside the box. Bolasie last scored at Selhurst Park on New Year's Day in January 2013 and ended his long drought when he powerfully headed home a Cabaye cross to give Palace a well-deserved lead after 68 minutes.
