dIMaPur, sePteMber 12 (MexN): The Naga National Council (parent body) under the leadership of Z.Royim Yimchungrii and V. Nagi has clarified that it has not received any invitation as claimed by Against Corruption And Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland that it had send invitation to all the Naga political groups for the September 12 Common Platform meeting. The NNC also wanted to know from ACAUT that if at all they were invited as reported in the local dailies, to whom was it addressed and when. “In reality if they invited the NNC, we would attend the meet. But if not then they should not mislead the people,” the clarification from the NNC Information and Publicity Wing further stated.
Short lunch periods bad for children
C M Y K
New yorK, sePteMber 12 (IaNs): A longer lunch period at school could make children healthier as researchers have found that students with less than 20 minutes to eat their lunch consume significantly less of their meals, milk, and vegetables than those who are not as rushed. The findings suggest that children should have at least 25 minutes to eat their lunch. “Many children, especially those from low-income families, rely on school meals for up to half their daily energy intake so it is essential that we give students a sufficient amount of time to eat their lunches,” said lead author of the study Juliana Cohen, adjunct assistant professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, US.

Morung Express News Dimapur | September 12
With a shared future in mind, a Common Platform was organised by the Against Corruption And Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland here today. It sought to bring together ‘Nagas’ Opinion for Peaceful Settlement’ in the backdrop of the ‘framework agreement’ which was signed between NSCN (IM) and the Government of India on August 3 this year. With six panellists and a cluster of rapporteurs, the ACAUT Nagaland went about gathering ‘Nagas’ Opinion’ at the DDSC stadium making its intent clear that they were not out to derail the peace process. With a number of young and old present at the venue, almost all panellists agreed that it is time for the healing of Naga wounds. This time was aptly described by panellist Dr. Visier Sanyü as the beginning of a new Naga mindset that asserts itself through peaceful means, both in the Indian Union and Burma. As Rev. Dr. VK Nuh noted, the Naga people will not give up the fight after having sacrificed so much. But it is time for the people to speak out as a

“nation will not solve their problems.” Reminding that peace comes from understanding not force, he said that we must sit down and reason together. The significance of time was not lost to other panellists. “If the older generation cannot fulfil Naga aspirations, let the young generation take it forward,” said Dr. Mazie Nakhro, hoping for a brighter future for Naga nationalism based on truth and without resorting to violence. He said the framework agreement should be taken as a stepping stone and not the final destination to the Naga journey. He resolved that God has a plan for the Nagas, that India has to respect “our democratic rights” and that the suffering of the Naga people under military rule will pay off one day. “Is today a new chapter in the political and social history of the Nagas?” wondered another panellist Rev. Dr. Tuisem Shishak. Maintaining that there can be no peace till Christ remains un-
nnc/fGn contradict Ar claims
Says slain cadre and apprehended cadre are not members of NNC/ FGN led by Brig Singnya
dIMaPur, sePteMber 12 (MexN): Contradicting the claim of the Assam Rifles, Sergeant Chaangpushie, who was killed in an encounter with the Assam Rifles at KT colony in Tuensang on Friday was not a cadre/ member of the Brig (Retd) S Singnya led NNC/FGN, a rejoinder from FGN Ministry of Rali Wali Affairs clarified on Saturday. The FGN statement also clarified that another cadre identified as Captain Tiameren Chang and apprehended by the Assam Rifles was not a member of the NNC/FGN. It maintained that the captain in question was terminated from national service few years back for his role in anti-government
activities. Presently, he is the Town Commander of Tuensang town of the NNC/FGN accordist faction, it further informed. Meanwhile, the FGN has advised the Assam Rifles or any other law enforcing agencies to collect detail inputs before “jumping into conclusion” by way of assessing and differentiating the number of NNC and NNC/FGN active at present in Nagaland and also distinguish the accordist and non-accordist. It informed that the accordist are those presently stationed at Chedema and Kohima Transit Peace Camp, borne out by the Shillong Accord. Further, it stated that the NNC/FGN under the leadership of Brig. (Retd) S. Singnya firmly believed in the spirit of non-violence through which the decades old Indo-Naga political issue will be resolved amicably in the days to come. At the same time, it also voiced expectation that the Government of India will respect and adhere to it.
seated from the table, he said that Naga people need to be direct or indirect part of the negotiations. Appealing for the public to give NSCN (IM) the “benefit of doubt” and accept them as Nagas first and for their tribes later, he also urged the NSCN (IM) to reach out to other Naga political groups for “rapprochement” as it is time to “build Naga society which is in ruins.” Rev. Dr. Nuh talked about a similar building of Naga society where political groups must come together. But the biggest problem today, he noted, is that the “old generation is concerned with roots while young generation is concerned with fruits.” Calling for an honest, inclusive and democratic approach from the NSCN (IM), Dr. Visier maintained that the Nagas have the right to “own our ancestral land” and that integration of Naga lands should be worked out through a dialogue with neighbours. Dr. Visier also

said that a democratic process (referendum) should be followed while deciding a name for the Naga country. Panellist Khekiye K Sema called for all political groups to be brought on board for lasting peace and that the contents of the framework agreement be made public. The end of the speeches was marked by a question and answer session. People present remained hopeful for answers specifically regarding the future of Nagas with regard to the framework agreement—this, however, did not materialise in a meaningful manner. In its passing, the event seemed like a missed bus for the Naga civil society to deliberate together on issues related to a ‘peaceful settlement’. The event also seemed like a hurried approach by ACAUT Nagaland that put the panellists in an awkward position on issuing clarifications and responding to questions relating to the framework agreement.
eanwhile, panellist and peace activist Niketu Iralu reminded the audience how ACAUT Nagaland was birthed by the Naga Council Dimapur, feeling the need for a movement against growing corruption in Nagaland. We cannot ignore the things that ACAUT Nagaland has shown to us in the past months. “To do the right thing and save our society, we need one another,” said Iralu while speaking at the ‘Common Platform’ today. The change has to begin in us first, however, in order to change society. He hoped that ACAUT Nagaland can go on to show how Naga society should grow in order to become part of a mature world. “However, ACAUT is so young it tends to throw stones on wrong doers too easily,” said Iralu. Society has been paralysed by burdening each other with provocative gestures—“now we need to help each other to do the right thing and help in the healing process.” We should sacrifice selfishness for society instead of sacrificing society for selfishness, noted the peace activist. He maintained that the proper process would be to bring national workers from difference groups together and discuss the framework agreement with them before anyone else. On this note, it is also time for the Naga people to go to their Meitei and Assamese neighbours, only after which a solution will be possible. As for the ‘Common Platform’ that was held today, he asserted that what should have been done by the Naga Hoho or Naga Students’ Federation has been done by ACAUT today.

$20 billion in dirty money left Myanmar in 50 yrs
KuaLa LuMPur, sePteMber 12 (thoMsoN reuters FouNdatIoN): Almost $20 billion in dirty money linked to corruption, crime and tax evasion has left Myanmar in the past five decades, slashing government revenue and driving a thriving underground economy, a money-laundering watchdog said on September 9. Fraudulent invoicing of trade deals and physical smuggling of drugs, timber, gems and other goods pose big challenges to Myanmar, which will hold its first general elections next month since the end of military rule, U.S.-based Global Financial Integrity said in a report. Illicit financial inflows have accelerated in the past few years as the economy has opened up, and over the past five decades were four times as big as outflows, it said. “Myanmar must be one of the most porous countries in the world,” GFI economist Joseph Spanjers, the report’s co-author, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “It is a serious challenge for the country as tax losses due to illicit flows are robbing it of crucial public funds.” Long isolation and trade restrictions during the nearly 50-year-long
reign of a military government until 2011 and attempts to regulate currency exchange rates have combined to drive a substantial part of Myanmar’s economy underground, GFI said. The Southeast Asian country, one of the poorest in the region, is not alone in grappling with the negative impacts of illicit financial flows. GFI estimates almost $1 trillion in dirty money leaves poor nations each year, an outflow that has grabbed the attention of anti-poverty groups and world leaders because, by cutting tax revenue needed to fund areas such as health and education, it has a corrosive impact on development. Illicit financial flows from Myanmar totalled $18.7 billion from 1960 to 2013, averaging 6.5 percent of the country’s annual economic output, GFI said. In the same period $77.7 billion of illicit money entered Myanmar, an inflow typical of countries where smuggling is a major part of the economy. Total illicit financial flows were the equivalent of up to 172 percent of health expenditure and up to 73 percent of education spending, the researchers found, showing how both movements of money deprive the

In districts like Kamrup, Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, bandh supporters forced some drivers out of their vehicles and made them stand for several hours leading to stray incidents of violence. Some of the supporters also partially destroyed
some vehicles in Tezpur. This led to the arrest of scores of protesters, police said, adding that they were released later. Meanwhile, Assam's leading farmers' body Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) launched a hunger strike at Dighalipukhuripar in Guwahati on Saturday to protest against the Centre's move and said that they would launch a mass movement opposing the Centre's decision. "The government started updating the National Register of Citizens to make the state free of illegal Ban-
gladeshi citizens. However, now the government takes a decision that all the nonMuslims from Bangladesh and Pakistan would be allowed to stay in India and would be given citizenship," said KMSS leader Kamal Medhi. "This is a condemnable move of the central government. This is not only against the people of Assam and against the spirit of the historical Assam Accord but also leads to a threat to national security," Medhi said, adding that Saturday's fast is just the beginning of a massive mass movement.

aGartaLa, September 12 (aNi): Days after seven teachers of a government school in Tripura were transferred after a video went viral in which they were seen dancing on a Bollywood number, a new video has now emerged in which the principal of the government polytechnic is seen in the same act. The principal is seen dancing along with the female students of the institute during the Teacher's Day celebration in this video. "Such incident is not desirable on the part a principal dancing with students inside the institute and especially on Teacher's Day celebrating the birthday of Dr. (Sarvapalli) Radhakrishnan. It is a kind of abuse to that person and he has to answer all these things," said Bhanulal Saha, a senior minister. Saha further said that it was a clear case of breach of discipline. There are also allegations against the principal that he had punished and physically hurt a student of the final semester of the institute after he raised question on his act. A video, which went viral earlier on June 8, showed seven teachers of Khudiram Basu English Medium School of Agartala dancing to Bollywood songs during the celebration of foundation day. The government has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

www.huffingtonpost.in Before I write anything about the Northeast, let me ask: Do we really consider it a part of India? This question is for everyone, including politicians, media-houses, corporations and even to every common citizen of the country. Assam is drowning. Ceaseless rains and massive floods have affected 1.5 million people in 17 districts. More than 50 people have died. According to the Assam State Disaster Manage-
ment Authority, more than 92,000 people have sought refuge in about 240 camps and 92,820 hectares of crop areas have been destroyed. The central government is yet to announce any concrete plan to tackle the situation, and Assam Chief Minister is able to do little other than wring his hands and complain that the Centre hasn't yet released the Rs 387.2 crore for rehabilitation and restoration work. While Prime Minister has with great fanfare announced a special "package" of Rs 1.25 lakh crores for Bihar, which
is headed for elections, this largesse is missing when it comes to Assam. After all, Assam is Congress-governed and there are no polls to worry about right now. As Assam struggles to breathe, there are no outpourings of support on Twitter, no heart-wrenching Facebook posts, no front page news. The rest of India is too busy raging over meat bans and pontificating on homicidal mothers. It is heart-wrenching to see such discrimination within our own country, by our own people.

Gold slips below Rs 26,000 mumbaI, SEptEmbEr 12 (ptI): Gold fell back after a brief overnight bounce and closed below the Rs 26,000mark at the domestic bullion market here due to reduced stockists demand in the face of a global slide. Elsewhere, silver continued to witness intense selling for the third straight session following consistent unwinding by traders as well as lack of industrial demand. The yellow metal dipped to a one-month low in worldwide trade against the backdrop of ongoing uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike amid stronger than expected macroeconomic data. Standard gold (99.5 purity) declined by Rs 40 to finish at Rs 25,960 per 10 grams from Friday's closing level of Rs 26,000. Pure gold (99.9 purity) also moved down by a similar margin to end at Rs 26,110 per 10 grams compared with Rs 26,150 earlier. Silver (.999 fineness) plunged by Rs 285 per kg to close at Rs 35,195 from Rs 35,480 yesterday. mumbaI, SEptEmbEr 12 (IaNS): A decision on a US rate hike, an appreciating dollar and outflows of foreign funds will further dwindle the rupee value, foreign reserves and flareup volatility in equity markets for the coming week, experts said on Saturday. "The upcoming US rate hike decision will make both the markets extremely volatile," Anindya Banerjee, associate vice president for currency derivatives with Kotak Securities, told IANS "This might further deplete the foreign reserves, as the reserve bank will try to arrest the fall in rupee's value. This was also one of the prime reasons for the $2.88 billion depletion in the reserve value (for the week ended September 4)." According to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI), weekly statistical supplement, the foreign reserves for the week ended September 4 declined by $2.88 billion and stood at $349.03
jumped to 4.2% from 4.4% (YOY) for the month of July. As per reports, some economists had forecast the IIP to slow down to 3.41%. The index is recorded by analysing data in two ways, which is by use-based and sector-based. Breaking up the numbers, manufacturing rose 4.7% beating 4.6%, mining rose 1.3 percent beating 0.3 percent, electricity rose 3.5 percent beating 1.3 percent (MOM). The growth rate is expected to hold around 4% in the coming months with at least 5-6% growth to show that the economic recovery is in full steam, said experts.

billion. The reserves had plunged by $3.43 billion to $351.92 billion in the previous week ended August 28. "The RBI is certainly trying to defend the rupee. It has been very aggressive and active in selling dollars to defend the rupee," Hiren Sharma, senior vice president, currency advisory at Anand Rathi Financial Services, told IANS. "Other major reason for the depletion in reserves was the outflow of foreign funds from equities markets due to the anxiety over the upcoming US rate hike decision." Major fund outflows are taking place due to the global economic uncertainty and heightened chances of the US Fed to raise interest rates after a decade or so of easy monetary regime with interest rates pegged at near zero levels. The US Fed will decided on whether or not to raise interest rates in its Federal
Open Market Committee (FOMC) slated for September 16-17. High interest rates in the US are expected to lead away the foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) from emerging markets like India. It is also expected to dent business margins as access to capital from the US will become expensive. It is estimated that the foreign funds and investors have sold around $3 billion since August. The reserves were also depleted on account of strengthening dollar value against major currencies. "The dollar appreciated by 1.00 percent against the major non-dollar currencies in the week under review. This has also had a negative impact on the reserves," Banerjee said. "The dollar is strengthening on the back of expectation of a rate hike and subsequent bearish sentiments." The Indian reserves
consists of nearly 20-25 percent of the non-dollar currencies. The individual movements of these currencies against the dollar impacts the overall reserve value. The data furnished by the RBI showed that the foreign currency assets (FCAs) receded by $2.65 billion to $325.65 billion. During the week under review, the country's gold reserves also depleted by $214.8 million at $18.03 billion. The plunge in bullion reserve comes as the dollar as a competing alternative is gaining strength. The special drawing rights (SDRs) in the period under review were lower by $18.6 million at $4.04 billion. The country's reserve position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) slipped by $5.9 million to $1.28 billion. For the next week, analysts fear a flare-up in vola-

Narendra Modi government may announce big-ticket investments
NEW DELHI, SEptEmbEr 12 (EcoNomIc tImES): The government plans to mark the first anniversary of its flagship 'Make in India' initiative by launching a digital campaign that will highlight the success of the programme so far. It may also announce some big-ticket investments on the occasion. Although Make in India was launched on September 25 last year, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP),
tility both in rupee and the equities markets. "Volatility will persist until the FOMC decision becomes clears. More important is the language that the Fed is going to use. A dovish one will support a recovery in rupee and equities. This could be a sustaining recovery," Banerjee elaborated. "The recovery can be as strong as taking rupee to 64-levels. However, a hawkish outlook will heighten the chances of a rate hike in December." On the other hand, Sharma believed that a rate cut by the RBI in its monetary policy meet scheduled on September 29 will help both the rupee and the equities markets. "If the Fed maintains its monetary policy and the RBI cuts rates to strengthen growth, then we can see a positive effect on both the rupee and the equities markets," Sharma contended.

ZPO apprises general public on Rani Gaidinliu
O
f late, various individuals in the name of major organisations have raised issues of concern over the celebration of Rani Gaidinliu birth centenary by the Union Government and accused Shri TR Zeliang Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland for trying to idolise Rani Gaidinliu for his political gains. In this regard, it is to apprise the general public that Rani Gaidinliu is widely known and respected as the lone womanfreedom fighter from the Northeast and she was conferred a number of awards by the Government of India and various institutions. Some of the awards are listed below: 1. The Freedom Fighter Tamrapatra Award in 1972 2. The Padma Bhusan in 1982. 3. The Vivekananda Sewa Summan in 1983 4. The Birsa Munda Award in 1996 (Posthumously). 5. The Government of India released a one Rupee Postage stamp of Rani Gaidinliu under the theme of great personality in 1966. 6. Paying tribute to renowned freedom fighter of the Northeast the Indian Coast Guard launched its fourth in-shore patrol vessel (IPV) christened 'Rani Gaidinliu at Vishakapatnam Shipyard on 6th November 2010. IPV-Rani Gaidinliu cost Rs.60.00 crores. A brief overview of the above awards speak volume of
the honour, respect and recognition the country showers on Rani Gaidinliu. Shri TR Zeliang Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland has been accused of misusing his official power to popularise and idolise Rani Gaidinliu. It may be noted that the Freedom Fighter Tamrapatra Award and the Padma Bhusan awarded to Rani Gaidinliu was much before Shri TR Zeliang became an elected Legislator. As implied by various organisations if TR Zeliang has been instrumental in making the Country recognize Rani Gaidinliu to be awarded the above prestigious awards at a time when he was a budding youth leader, his achievement should be lauded rather than be criticised. All the above awards and acts of recognition are national level recognition and as implied if Shri TR Zeliang Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland was able to influence the country and the Union Government to recognize Rani Gaidinliu as a freedom fighter from the Northeast at a time when he was still a budding youth leader and before he became the Chief Minister of Nagaland such feat and achievement must be lauded and acknowledged rather than be criticised. Nagas need influential leaders who are respected and whose words are honoured by the country. The Government of Nagaland acknowledged Rani
Gaidinliu as a freedom fighter from the Northeast and provided her government facilities including government quarter, government vehicle, personal staff etc. at Kohima which she utilised from 1966 till 1992 the year when she returned to her native village in Luangkao. Rani Gaindinliu lived in Kohima accepting the warm hospitality of the Nagas and the Kohima village land owners and made Kohima her home from 1966 to 1992. If, in 1966, Shri TR Zeliang then a young 14 year old boy could be influential enough to press the then NNO Government to recognize and acknowledge Rani Gaidinliu as a freedom fighter and to provide her the above facilities in Nagaland, the influence that Shri TR Zeliang had on the then NNO government and the succeeding governments need to be applauded rather than be criticised. The NPCC accuses that since the BJP came into power in 2014 it has been on a relentless pursuit to eulogize Rani Gaidinliu. All the above mentioned awards and recognition given by the Union Government was at a time when the Congress was in power at the Centre and at a time when the BJP was not in power. Does the NPCC mean to say that it does not approve of the action taken by the Union Government when its party, the Congress Party, was ruling the Country? When the above
prestigious awards and acts of recognition as the lone woman freedom fighter from the Northeast, was awarded to Rani Gaidinliu, by the then Congress ruled Union Government, why was the NPCC silent at that point of time? Why are they waking up only now and accusing the BJP of acts of commissions done by the then Congress ruled Union Government at a time when the BJP was not in the seat of power. Or does the NPCC mean to say that Rani Gaidinliu was recognized by the Congress ruled Union Government under the pressure of the BJP Party? If so, the BJP needs to be applauded for coercing the then Congress ruled Union Government to give recognition to Rani Gaidinliu. On the issue of birth centenary celebration of Rani Gaidinliu Shri RB Acharya Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland and Shri TR Zeliang Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland attended the programme at Delhi which was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and graced by Shri Narendra Modi the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. The Centenary programme was organised under the Scheme for organizing and celebrating Centenaries/ Anniversaries of the following freedom fighters: 1. 150th Birth Anniversary of Late Lajpat Rai (28.1.2015 – 28.1.2016) 2. Birth Centenary of Rani Gaidinliu (26.1.2015 –
26.1.2016) 3. 200th Birth Centenary of Tantya Tope (2015-16) 4. 475th Birth Anniversary of Maharana Pratap (09.05.2015 – 09,05.2016) 5. Birth Centenary of Bhisham Sahni (08.08.2015 – 08.08.2016) 6. 500th Anniversary of Shri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu coming to Vrindavan. All the above commemorations are being organised as per the provision of the above mentioned scheme for Centenary/Anniversary celebration of freedom fighters which was enacted when the Congress party was in power at the Centre. If, as alleged,Shri TR Zeliang is instrumental in bringing out the scheme for the celebration of birth centenary of freedom fighters, his political acumen and ingenuity is laudable. When the above mentionedscheme was introduced in the country Shri TR Zeliang was still a budding youth leader. And at such a young age to be influential to the extent of making the then Congress ruled Union Government into enacting the said scheme needs to be appreciated and not criticised. On the issue of construction of Rani Gaidinliu Library cum Memorial Museum, the said projectwas sanctioned on 19.12.2011 by the Government of India, Ministry of Culture, for taking up construction works. It may be noted that the above
project was sanctioned when the Congress Party was in power at the Centre. Why was the NPCC silent at that point of time? The said construction work was already in good progress and nearing completion with 95 percent works already done whenShri TR Zeliang took over as the State Chief Minister on 24thMay, 2014. It will be worthwhile to mention here that Shri Neiphiu RioHon’ble MP and former Chief Minister, Nagaland during his visit to Tening Town on 12.10.2009 committed to construct Rani Gaidinliu Library cum Memorial Museum at Kohima. True to his commitment and under his kind initiative the present site at New Secretariat area between the Convention Hall and Shopping Complexwas allotted for the construction of Raini Gaidinliu Library cum Memorial Hall. Work order for the above mentioned was issued to two Angami Contractors under the firm name of M/s Hexad Syndicate. On the news item dated 23.08.2015 that appeared in the local newspapers under the caption, “NBCC breaks silence on Gaidinliu.”Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho had impliedRani Gaidinliu as the spiritual leader of the Nagas steering a hornet’s nest for few people to react. Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho went further to say that Heraka was the traditional religion of the Nagas. These insinuationsare false and
misleading. At no point of time Rani Gaidinliu was a spiritual leader of the Nagas as a whole and for that matter no organisation or individual has ever relegated Rani Gaidinliu as the spiritual leader of the Nagas. Heraka has never been the traditional religion of the Nagas. The said Reverend should not coin up allegations and then put it across in the form of press release to imply that certain politician are trying to eulogise Rani Gaidinliu and promote Heraka cult for political mileage. While a child from a Hindu family is born a Hindu by birth; a child from a Christian family is not born a Christian. Such a child needs to grow up,know the Lord,be born again to become a Christian and therefore the Christian Religion is spread through propagation. However, propagation should be done in the right spirit and not through false allegations and accusations which are misleading. In a democratic secular country the essence of religious tolerance is the binding force for unity in diversity and history has often revealed that religious fanaticism is never fruitful. Peaceful co-existence, religious tolerance, having respect for the beliefs and practices of fellow brethren is a prerequisite of a progressive society that is composed of diverse cultures. hildren with special needs can face many issues in getting a free and appropriate education. Some may need special education services, while others may need modifications to make school accessible or medical assistance to make it safe. For some students, struggles with learning or behavior require special management to avoid school disruption. Parents have lots of questions about what their children will need and how to get it. Special Education “Special Education"
refers to services given to students with disabilities through the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, better known as IDEA. Students in special education require significant modifications in their educational programs; they may need extensive remediation, smallergroup settings, adaptations to their workload, a slower-paced curriculum, or other adjustments to suit their abilities and limitations as determined by a team of educators and parents working together. The team develops an IEP, or Individualized Education Program (or Plan), a legal document that spells out exactly what the school will do and what goals have been set for
the student. Students in special education may be taught in a regular classroom with supports, a selfcontained classroom, or a special school for students with similar disabilities. Terri Mauro has two children with special needs: a 25-year-old with language-based learning disabilities and a 22-yearold with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, both adopted from Russia in 1994. annah Taylor was five years-old when her and her mother drove passed a man eating out of a garbage can in Winnipeg, Canada. Puzzled, Hannah asked her mother why he would do this. She introduced Hannah to the dire reality of homelessness. For the rest of the year, the story of the man troubled Hannah and prompted her to ask her parents questions about homelessness, until one day her mother encouraged her to take action, as a solution to her inquietude. Following her mom’s advice, Hannah asked her grade school teacher if she could talk to the class about homelessness. She did and together with her peers, she “ended up having a bake and art sale, and giving all the proceeds and clothes and stuff to a local mission. And it got bigger from there.” At 8 years-old, Hannah established the Ladybug Foundation Inc., an organization that currently assists over 50 Canadian charities, which provide shelter, food and other basic provisions for the homeless, hungry and poor. Hannah also strives to raise awareness about homelessness and has spoken at over 175 schools and to audiences as large as 16,000. She constantly reminds people that food and shelter are basic human rights and everyone must do their share to help those in need. Hannah has also discussed the issue of homelessness with top officials, such as the past Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and current Prime Minister Stephen Harp-
Hannah Taylor er, CEOs and the Presidents of Corporations, musicians and actors. Since its creation, the Ladybug Foundation has raised over $2 million for Canadian charities helping the homeless. In order to raise the money, Hannah has launched several initiatives for her organization. One is Big Boss lunches, where she unites key leaders in Canadian cities, including Winnipeg, Toronto and Calgary, and asks for their financial support. Hannah recalls that for her first Big Boss Lunch, she “drew 50 pictures to sell. Most were of ladybugs. One of the big bosses asked how much they cost. I said, ‘Let your heart decide.’ He said, ‘I’ll take one for $10,000.’” Hannah does not just help the homeless. She likes to befriend them, whenever they were willing as well. She described how she became friends with a homeless man: “Once, when I was 8, I stopped to fill a homeless man’s asking cup with all the change in my purse. Then I hugged him and left. His name is Carey. Twenty minutes later, he came up behind me and handed me my ladybug charm. It fell into his cup by accident. He said he thought
it might be important to me. We’ve been friends ever since.” When asked the most difficult part of her journey since launching her organization, the young girl confessed that the death of two of her friends, results of the dangers of homelessness and poverty, was the saddest and hardest experience of her life. She reveals: “They found my one friend, Patches, on the riverbank; he drowned. I had exams and couldn’t go to the funeral. My other friend froze to death because she couldn’t find a place to sleep.” Hannah believes that her mission will only end when “people will care about each other like family. The homeless will have homes and won’t have to eat out of garbage cans.” The young Canadian launched another organization, called the Ladybug Foundation Education Program Inc., where she created the “makeChange,” a multimedia resource for teachers to empower young people to become involved and make a change in their com-

Miracles in MozaMbique How Mama Heidi reaches the abandoned Tim Stafford Christianity Today
"I
want anybody who is deaf to come to the front. Anybody who can't hear. God is going to heal tonight." Heidi Baker, with short, swept-back blond hair, hawk-like blue eyes, and Teutonic features, speaks over a powerful sound system into a pitch-black African night. We are in the dusty village of Chiure, Mozambique, the 11th poorest nation on earth. No electricity or running water is available here. From their ragged clothes and bare feet, you can see that the people are destitute. Two trucks have brought students from Pemba, Baker's mission center. Setting up openair screens and generator-powered projectors, they have just shown the Jesus film. Preaching followed. And now, a crowd of several hundred has gathered on the bare ground in front of the trucks for the climactic moment. Heidi Baker, known worldwide for her healing miracles, spends a third of every year on the charismatic speaking circuit, where people routinely fall to the floor in unconscious bliss or shake and laugh uncontrollably. They come, enthralled, to hear of Baker's miracles in places like Chiure. In recent years, she says, 100 percent of the deaf in the Chiure area have been healed through prayer. Not only that, she claims, scores have risen from the dead, food has been multiplied, the crippled and blind have been restored, and the gospel has spread like fire. Baker's church association now numbers 10,000 congregations, maybe more. Responding to Baker's call, four people straggle to the front, standing uneasily. The audience crowds forward around them, blocking the view. Most of what happens is relayed over the booming sound system in Portuguese and translated into Makhuwa, the local language, with occasional explanations in English. One can hardly see through a blinding floodlight on the truck. Attention focuses on Antonio, a somber boy of perhaps 12 who, as a young child, it is said, lost his hearing completely. Antonio cannot explain himself, because he cannot hear or apparently speak. Baker asks the audience for help. "Do you know Antonio? Is he really deaf?" Only a few people seem to respond. But Baker is satisfied and proceeds to lay hands on Antonio and pray. Then she gives Antonio a microphone. "Ba-ba!" she shouts, her voice booming through the sound system loudly enough to make the deaf hear. "Ba-ba," Antonio repeats in a strangled, calf-like mew. "Ma-ma!" Baker shouts. "Ma-ma," Antonio repeats. "Jesus," Baker cues. "Jesus." Baker announces jubilantly that Antonio is completely healed, and that, in fact, all four people on stage have been healed of deafness. She invites the crowd to praise God, but the response is weak. Later, when asked about the subdued reaction, she says, "It's always that way in Mozambique. They never show much reaction." Her assistant Antoinette, who has seen many Mozambican healings, agrees. "It seems odd," she says. "We would be jumping around." Was it a miracle? Unless you knew Antonio before and after, you couldn't say for sure. Baker, though, has no doubt, and nobody else seems to either. After the healing, Baker asks for villagers with bad backs to raise their hands so that members of the outreach team can find them and pray for them. Then come those with stomach problems. Finally, she invites drunkards who want healing prayer to identify themselves, and a few do. The evening program concludes with outreach team members circulating through the crowd laying hands on and praying for anyone who wants it. Plenty of people seem eager. Some indicate that prayers have been answered. It was during this time of prayer, Baker later says, that the village chief approached her. "Did you see Antonio healed?" she asked him. He said he had seen it. He then announced that the elders would like to donate land where Baker could build a church, which could double as a preschool and meeting center. He also invited Heidi and husband Rolland Baker's umbrella organization, Iris Ministries, to come drill a well. In Chiure as in so many places in Mozambique, healing has opened the door for God's love.
Loving the Abandoned Rolland Baker, Heidi's husband and mission partner, says Heidi is fundamentally an introvert, longing for hours alone in prayer and meditation. Most days, however, she spends interacting one on one with dirty and ragged children like those who circle around her from the moment she arrives in Chiure. One of the mottos she preaches is, "Stop for the one." She lives by it. As a result, she is prone to arriving late. After a night sleeping on the ground in Chiure, Baker visits in homes. The houses are simple adobe structures of one or two rooms, their roofs made of a loose thatch, their floors dirt. Heidi has a gift for making friends—sitting with women by their front door, praying for them or their children, laughing and talking. Baker has a gift for making friends—sitting with omen by their front door, praying for them or their children, laughing and interacting. She seems completely at home here. She prays for a boy with epilepsy. Though perhaps 8 years old, he has not been in school. From the quarter-size scar on the top of his head, it seems that he has been trepanned, a primitive surgical treatment that removes bone from the skull. "Don't go back to the witch doctors," Baker sings out as she moves on. At another home, Baker sits with a smiling mother and her newborn, taking a language lesson in the local dialect. The mother says she must walk nine miles to find potable water. "This is why we drill wells," Baker says. "Love looks like something." Love looks like many things for Heidi and Rolland. They start schools, offer medical clinics, distribute food, and drill wells. They also pray for miracles. "If God doesn't show up, we fail," she likes to say. Michael McClymond, a theology professor at St. Louis University who has visited the Bakers in Mozambique, summarizes their ministry model: "Go out on a limb and wait for God to show up." Isn't that putting God to the test? McClymond thinks not, "because it's done on behalf of the poor." Another Western scholar sees the Bakers as among the most influential leaders in world Pentecostalism. Indiana University religious studies professor Candy Gunther Brown has studied the Bakers in the field. She says, "Heidi is a hero to young women," so much so that scholars joke about "Heidiolatry." "For Heidi and Rolland, miracles and concern for the poor are meant to go together," Brown says. "In their view, you can't separate the two. Power and love are wings, and you need both to fly." Rolland and Heidi make a team, with Heidi as the outgoing public celebrity and Rolland as the behindthe-scenes engineer. Rolland grew up in Taiwan, the son of Assemblies of God missionaries. • Fifth, the Bakers emphasize the joy of the Lord. At Sunday morning worship in Pemba, a very lively dance troupe leads the congregation in complicated steps. Prayer times are exuberant. The laying on of hands may be accompanied by raucous laughter and whoops of joy. Living Face Down On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Heidi teaches local student pastors and visiting Westerners at the Harvest School in Pemba. They gather in a large, hillside shed, a concrete slab with a roof for shade. To face the heat, students wear shorts or loose-fitting skirts, T-shirts, and flip-flops. They sit on the floor or stretch out as a guitarist leads in the ultimate worship song of three chords, four words, repeated 50 times. "Welcome in this place," words addressed to Jesus, are repeated without variation at least 200 times, lasting for 30 minutes. Some students kneel with eyes closed and hands lifted high, swaying themselves into a trance. Others lie on their backs with hands lifted straight into the air. Still others seem unengaged by the music, looking around or even quietly conversing with neighbors. Baker slips in behind the guitarist, placing herself prone on the floor, her arms outstretched. Several women gather to lie beside her, massaging her and praying. She does not move as the song endlessly repeats. Then, slowly, she raises herself to her knees and leads a continuation of the music, improvising words in a strong, deep voice. Get Ready for Fall Launch She is attractively dressed in bright colors, with a turquoise necklace and earrings. She launches into the Beatitudes. That's what preoccupies her with these students—those "scary" words of Jesus that ask so much. "Blessed are the poor in spirit," she tells them, which translates to "live face down" before the King of glory. She mentions her deep concern for children held captive in the worldwide sex trade. Baker is not strikingly articulate, but she dramatizes the existential state of her soul— emotions of inadequacy mixed with complete dependency on a loving Jesus. "I'm desperate and yet fulfilled at the same time, because I know my Daddy is there for me." In ministry, she says, "The way up is down." She is a storyteller, and today she illustrates with a story of church crisis. One Mozambican pastor was caught in adultery and theft. Suddenly leaderless, the church needed help. Baker says God told her to walk to a certain tree, where she would find it. What she found was a young man who had just left jail. He needed a job and his mother, a Christian, had told him to sit under the tree and wait. He didn't seem like a promising prospect, but Baker says she took God at his word and invited the man to join their work. Today he is a co-leader of the whole Partners in Harvest missions organization under the sponsorship of Iris. She tells of a wedding in Maputo where cholera in the salad infected hundreds of people. Some went to their homes and died, but 80 who lived at the base went into a special cholera hospital. The medical staff said they would all die, too, but Baker and another pastor went to offer what love and care they could, "face to face, cheek to cheek," heedless of the filth and the possibility of getting infected. Miraculously, all 80 recovered. The doctor who had predicted death told Baker, "Your God is God," and asked to join their staff. A third story: a Mozambican pastor screaming, wailing, and shaking in church. When Baker asked him what was troubling him, he answered, "God told me to give away everything I own!" "We don't pay our pastors," Baker explained. "If we did, it would destroy the church overnight." Jose owned nothing, not even a house. What would his wife think? He had been accumulating building materials, but he donated them to build a church. Subsequently, a visiting Australian announced to Baker that "God spoke to me," and that he was supposed to build Jose a house. When Jose got the house, he took in orphan kids to fill it. "Riches are a very sad thing unless they are used to raise up the poor," Baker says. "True riches look like people coming to the Father, into his house. Riches look like children. "Jose is the richest man I know." She smiles and asks the students, "Do the Beatitudes scare you like they did before?" Pausing to let the question sink in, she looks around at the rapt faces. "I hope your answer is, 'Yes and no.'" She carries on to the next Beatitude, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness." Baker regrets that they no longer have space to combine the Harvest School with the Bible school. When the classes were joined together, she would ask, "How many of you have had a family member die of starvation?" Thirty or forty Mozambican hands would go up. "They raised their hands without emotion. It was just matter of fact. One man lost nine children to famine. He took in nine orphans. I've never seen love like that. "I would have the Mozambicans lay hands on the Westerners and Easterners and ask God to teach them what hunger is like. "I am hungry for righteousness to be poured out on this earth," Baker says, as Jesus was. Strikingly, her stories feature Mozambicans more than herself. Pastors are raised into leadership by God's choice. They manifest the deepest faith and greatest riches she has seen. In their poverty, they understand the words of Jesus. She wants the idealistic Western kids at the Harvest School to grasp the practical import of the Beatitudes, which is humility. She wants them to sacrifice their lives to the call of gospel ministry, to throw their lives on Jesus. She tells about Iris Ministries' new boat, purchased to reach offshore islands where people have never heard the name of Jesus. "If it means you need a ship to get there, hunger and thirst for it. You don't say, 'We're already overextended.' You don't give up. You get there." Heidi and Rolland Baker seek to prove the gospel in the hardest places, to see the impossible flow out of the love of Jesus. They want to transform Mozambique, and beyond, but they operate hand-to-mouth, always running on the ragged end of their resources and organization. Their leadership drives Iris, but they cannot go on forever. Rolland is in his mid-60s, Heidi in her 50s. Sustainability ultimately depends on thousands of African pastors, alive with faith but virtually untrained, and hundreds of idealistic young Westerners who have experienced Pemba and are committed to serve anywhere. If the ministry is to be sustained, it will have to be by the power of the Holy Spirit, say the Bakers. Heidi ends the session with an emphatic, shouted prayer. "I pray that I stay wrecked the rest of my life!" Bodies are scattered over the floor. There is a deep drumming of tongues. Hands are raised. Hands are laid on heads in passionate petition. Some shout angry defiance at Satan. Some cry out as though in pain. Tim Stafford is a senior writer for Christianity Today. His book on miracles will be published this year

Four killed in dual train derailment India, Pakistan forces' talks
Bengaluru, SeptemBer 12 (IanS): Two women passengers died and eight other people were injured early Saturday when nine coaches of a speeding Mumbai-bound Duronto express from Secunderabad in Telangana derailed near Kalaburgi in north Karnataka, an official said. "The incident occurred after the train passed Martur station between Wadi and Kalaburgi at 2.42 a.m.," Central Railways' Solapur division's Additional Manager K. Madhusudan told IANS from mishap spot, about 630 km from Bengaluru. The victims have been identified as Jyothi Shankar, 46, and Pushpalatha Harish, 26.. They were travelling to Pune in Maharashtra from Secunderabad. As a non-stop superfast express, the fully airconditioned Duronto was passing through at 110 km speed when the derailment happened in the dark. "Though the first seven coaches from engine passed safely, the following nine coaches, including a pantry car (HA1, A1, A2, A3, B6, B7, B8, B9) derailed while the remaining four coaches in the rear were stranded on track," Madhusudan said. Prior to the express train, a Hyderabad-Mumbai express passed safely from the same mishap spot though the area has been witnessing heavy rains over the last couple of days. pa r wa n o o ( h I m a c h a l praDeSh), SeptemBer 12 (IanS): Two Britons were killed and seven others injured on Saturday when two coaches of a chartered Kalka-Shimla toy train hired by a group of 37 foreigners derailed near this Himachal Pradesh town, a police officer said. The dead were one man and a woman, Kalka station superintendent V.K. Arora told IANS over the telephone. The injured were admitted to the PGI hospital in Chandigarh, 30 km from the accident spot. Over-speeding at a curve was the cause of the accident, one of the survivors told police. Northern Railway chief public relations officer Neeraj Sharma told reporters in New Delhi that the train was booked by a group of foreigners mainly from Britain. The police said the train with four engines left Kalka in Haryana at 12.40 p.m. It went off the tracks at Taksal, just three kilometres from Kalka. The traffic on the 96 km long and inquiry by the commissioner of railway safety has been ordered. A portion of track, which gave way, has been repaired to restore traffic on the high density route," Madhusudan said. a century-old narrow gauge world heritage railroad remained suspended and is likely to be restored by Sunday. The chartered trains on this rail section are handled by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation, a wing of Indian Railways. "The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. It might be a problem in the track or in the coach. There is a possibility that an animal suddenly came on the track or rocks falling on the track," Sharma told IANS in New Delhi earlier. The Kalka-Shimla rail track was built by the British in 1903 to ferry Europeans to and from this hill town, the erstwhile summer capital of British India. It was chosen by Unesco as a world heritage site in 2008. Raaja Bhasin, a Shimla-based historian, who was also travelling in the train, told IANS that the group of foreigners was from Britain. Indian sex workers & widows live in problematic condition: Dutch activist KolKata, SeptemBer 12 (IanS): Dutch activist Saskia Wieringa, known for her work on women's same-sex relations and women's empowerment, on Saturday described the state of widows and sex workers in India as "problematic". Wieringa has worked for over 30 years in Indonesia on women's issues and has authored a book on comparisons between Indonesia and India, following research in Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra among other states. "The position of widows is really very problematic in comparison to Indonesia. There is a big difference," Wieringa told IANS here on the sidelines of the National Queer Conference on Saturday. "Everybody feels sorry for her and people see them as sexually available but they can take up jobs (in Indonesia). "But... in India the way heterosexual marriage is seen as a holy tie, makes for violence in
relationships that don't work anymore and it ties a widow to her in-laws and that leads to a lot of violence and subordination," said the 60-year-old professor affiliated to the University of Amsterdam. According to Wieringa, compared to their Indian counterparts, sex workers in Indonesia have possibilities of "finding life beyond sex work". "Once you are a sex worker you die as a sex worker in India. But in Indonesia, there's more flexibility and it's better to find a life beyond sex work -- to get married, to have children," she said. The much awarded academician also hailed the Indian Supreme Court's landmark judgment on third genders. "That's a big step forward. If it goes all the way, if it is also interpreted all the way, then all forms of gender diversity are acceptable, not just one particular form," she added.
Cinema halls must provide free drinking water: NCDRC new DelhI, SeptemBer 11 (ptI): Movie halls must provide free drinking water as it is a basic necessity and not everyone may be in a position to afford it at "exorbitant rates", the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has ruled. "A movie watcher may include old and infirm persons as well as the children for whom it would be difficult to manage without water for three hours or more. "The water being a basic necessity for human beings, it is obligatory for the cinema hall to make it available to the movie-goers in case they decide not to allow the drinking water to be carried inside the cinema hall," NCDRC bench headed by Justice V K Jain said. The bench observed that water cinema owners are obligated to provide water as sometimes a consumer may even faint if he or she does not get water in time, adding that if a cinema hall while prohibiting carrying water inside fails to make portable drinking water available, "it will be an act of deficiency in rendering services to them." The commission said if theatre owners compel consumers to buy expensive bottles from their cafeteria, they would be held liable for unfair trade practices. It also directed that appropriate water purifiers need to be installed with the water coolers and sufficient disposable glasses. It said that the theatres must ensure that the water supply is available throughout the movie hours and if for any reason, water supply is not available on a particular day, alternative arrangements for supply of free pure and portable drinking water to cinema-goers need to be made available by the owners. The bench said if the directions were not complied with, the owner would be liable to pay appropriate compensation for the deficiency in rendering services. The NCDRC order came on an appeal filed by Agartala-based Rupasi Multiplex against the Tripura State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission decision that had said not providing free drinking water to movie goers amounted to deficiency of service.
The Kalka-Shimla rail route also features in the Guinness Book of World Records for offering the steepest rise in altitude in a space of 96 km. More than two-thirds of the track is curved, sometimes at angles as sharp as 48 degrees. The glorious journey along the rail line from 640 metres above sea level at Kalka to the lofty heights of Shimla at 2,060 metres takes one's breath away, as the train meanders through deep ravines, a verdant forest of pine, deodar, oak and maple, and the magnificent scenery of the Shivalik hills. Five trains run normally between Kalka and Shimla every day. Each 'toy train' -- the popular name for it -- has about seven coaches and can accommodate nearly 200 passengers. The last derailment on the Kalka-Shimla rail route occurred in December 2008 when one person was killed and three people injured. It went off the track at Sanawar in Himachal Pradesh after completing two hours of the journey.
kar B Narasing, 45. The worst affected was B8 coach in which both victims and the injured were travelling. They were part of a 22-member group of employees from Rajdeep Associates in Secunderabad, proceeding to Lonawala in Maharashtra on a three-day vacation. Preliminary investigation by police ruled out sabotage. Most passengers were in daze and were unable to explain how the coaches derailed as they were
asleep. "The stranded passengers have been rescued and put in a special train to Mumbai, while the injured were admitted to a district hospital at Kalaburgi," Madhusudan said. Efforts are on to restore the track and resume movement of trains, which came to a halt since 3 a.m., affecting thousands of passengers on the busy Mumbai-Hyderabad, and Mumbai-Chennai and Mumbai-Bengaluru double track.

new DelhI, SeptemBer 12 (IanS): The fourday talks between India's BSF and its Pakistani counterpart Pakistan Rangers ended on Saturday on an "optimistic note" with both sides agreeing to take steps to maintain peaceful and tranquil borders. The talks between the director generals of the two border forces were held in a cordial and congenial atmosphere and the deliberations ended by signing an accord. A consensus was reached on various issues, including no firing along the border to protect the lives of innocent civilians. "The talks ended on an optimistic note with both sides agreeing on constant endeavour to maintain peaceful and tranquil borders," Border Security Force (BSF) chief D. K.
Recall of witnesses should be judicious, not arbitrary, says SC new DelhI, SeptemBer 12 (IanS): The Supreme Court has said that the Delhi High Court decision to allow the recall and re-examination of witnesses including the victim in Uber cab rape case was not justified as it resulted not only in delay but also harassment of witnesses. "The court has to keep in mind not only the need for giving fair opportunity to the accused but also the need for ensuring that the victim of the crime is not unduly harassed," said a bench of Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel in their judgment pronounced on Thursday but made available Friday. Saying that it was difficult to approve the view taken by the high court, Justice Goel, speaking for the bench, said: "Undoubtedly, fair trial is the objective and it is the duty of the court to ensure such fairness. Width of power under section 311 Cr.P.C. (Criminal Procedure Code) is beyond
any doubt. Not a single specific reason has been assigned by the high court as to how in the present case, recall of as many as 13 witnesses was necessary ..." Rejecting the high court reasoning that it was the accused who would suffer on account of any delaying tactics on his part, the apex court said that "without considering the hardship to the witnesses, undue delay in the trial, and without any other cogent reason, allowing recall merely on the observation that it is only the accused who will suffer by the delay as he was in custody could, in the circumstances, be hardly accepted as valid or serving the ends of justice". "It is not only matter of delay but also of harassment for the witnesses to be recalled which could not be justified on the ground that the accused was in custody and that he would only suffer by prolonging of the proceedings," the judgment said.
communication technologies, complaints related to mobile phones, base stations and gadgets have become more prominent. "The radio frequency electromagnetic radiation (RFR - a type of electromagnetic radiation) exposure levels have amplified manifold because of the extensive use of mobile phones and other devices," Neeraj Kumar Tiwari, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, SRM University, Lucknow, told IANS in an e-mail interview. "Very common symptoms and sensations of EHS are irritation, headache, stammering, hearing loss, dizziness, ringing delusion, disrupted sleep, stress, fatigue and restlessness," he added. Further at the genetic level, electromagnetic radiation from mobiles cause damage if their exposure time and level are high, said M. Y. Khan, Dean, School for Biosciences and Biotechnology, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, who has extensively dealt with the issue as a scientist. In fact, he said, the situation in India compared to the West is worse. "Because we tend to use cheap mobile sets made by companies which do not follow the standard norms about the radiation safety," Khan, Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology at the varsity, said in an e-mail interview. The electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly carcinogenic to humans. It was mutually agreed to hold the next talks in the first half of 2016 in Pakistan. The Pakistan Rangers chief led a 16-member delegation to India while the BSF fielded a 23-member delegation. Both the delegations also had representatives from their home and foreign ministries along with officers from narcotics control and survey department. Veterans rejects OROP, seek changes new DelhI, SeptemBer 12 (IanS): Thousands of army veterans, who held a rally here on Saturday, unanimously rejected the 'One Rank One Pension' (OROP) scheme approved by the government and threatened to intensify their agitation if the scheme's anomalies were not removed. "We have decided to continue the relay fast. If the government does not remove the anomalies in the scheme, we will intensify the protest," United Front of Ex-servicemen spokesperson Col. Anil Kaul (retd) said. He clarified that no new demands were being made, unlike what was being propagated. The united front claimed that about 50,000 army veterans from across the country participated in the rally. Kaul further said at least 200 buses were stopped at the border of Delhi and thousands were stopped from participating. The spokesperson said all problems were being created by bureaucrats. Families of the veterans also joined the protests saying that the OROP announced by the government was misleading. "I have come here from Lucknow to protest against the government's offer. It is misleading. The scheme does not meet our demands completely," Laxmi Singh, a family member of an exservicemen, told IANS.

Should you worry about 'wireless allergies'? KolKata, SeptemBer 12 (IanS): Should you worry about 'wireless allergies'? Addressed with skepticism by most, the term electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) or wireless allergy or gadget allergy, is ascribed to a range of non-specific symptoms like headache and fatigue apparently due to heavy use of wireless communicating devices, especially those that emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Common sources of this Wi-Fi tsunami include mobile phone signals, WiFi hotspots, Wi-Fi enabled devices like tabs, cellphones, laptops and a plethora of other gadgets. The controversial issue was recently thrust in the limelight when a French court in a landmark ruling granted disability allowance to a 39-year-old woman who claimed to be experiencing discomfort from alleged EHS. She was forced to live in a countryside barn far away from the Wi-Fi and the internet. Despite such examples, the legitimacy debate rages on - is it a real thing or cooked up - fueled by the absence of hard evidence and conclusive research. According to WHO, EHS has no clear diagnostic criteria and there is no scientific basis to link its symptoms to EMF (electromagnetic field) exposure, but it also says: "The symptoms are certainly real and can vary widely in their severity. Whatever its cause, EHS can be a disabling problem for the affected individual." Experts in India who have been studying such emerging problems (for example, the link between EHS and cellphone usage) say that with the introduction and expansion of wireless

London, September 12 (IAnS): Provide safe and legal passage to refugees who are pouring into Europe, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has said in an open letter to European leaders who are grappling with the humanitarian crisis. "The only way Europe can prevent a worsening crisis on its territory is to replace the smugglers by providing a safe, legal and free alternative. We ask you to provide safe passage," said MSF in the open letter whose copies were sent to Switzerland, Norway, Serbia, Former Yugoslavian Republic Of Macedonia and the president of the European Commission. It demanded that legal crossing of sea and land borders must be authorised for asylum seekers into and inside the EU. "All forms of legal avenues allowing refugees to reach Europe must be put in place urgently. Efficient solutions to relocate asylum seekers from one EU member state to another must be found. Effective access to coherent asylum procedures and assistance should be provided at entry points, throughout Europe and along migratory routes. "Swift registration and access to temporary pro-
tection should be provided upon arrival. Legal migration pathways must be created," the letter issued on Friday said. Alongwith the open letter MSF, called Doctors Without Borders in English, sent a lifejacket belonging to one of the 15,000 people rescued at sea by them since May. "These jackets sometimes feature handwritten prayers for a safe passage, or phone numbers of relatives and friends to be contacted in case the person wearing it does not make it. This is a reminder that the people embarking on these journeys are fully aware of the risks they are undertaking, and the sheer desperation motivating them to put themselves and their families in so much danger," it said. The international organisation pointed out that they were treating the medical consequences of the journey, including hypothermia and dehydration, but also acute conditions requiring medical evacuation such as septic shock, pneumonia and wounds inflicted by abuse and violence. "When your ministers gather this Monday for yet another summit on the socalled 'migration crisis', bear in mind that the deci-
sions adopted in previous summits have so far largely failed to improve the situation. Some measures have made the situation worse: fences and forced fingerprinting only push people to choose more clandestine and dangerous routes. "Lives continue to be lost at sea, in the back of lorries and in make shift camps where people live in unacceptable conditions in the heart of the European Union. It is time to put an end to these policies of deterrence," said MSF. It went on to say that they have turned "a foreseeable and manageable influx of people fleeing for survival into a policymade human tragedy on Europe's beaches, borders, train platforms and motorways. They are jeopardising the right to seek asylum. The current approach of 'non-reception' and closed borders is causing death, injury and chaos". It said that the increasing number of people seeking assistance and protection were only "a small portion of the millions who are fleeing intolerable suffering. No matter the obstacles, they will continue to come. They have no other choice. The current policies are untenable in the face of this situation," the MSF's open letter added.
Encouraging results from real 107 killed by users of HIV ‘prevention’ pill falling crane at Andrew M. Seaman Reuters Health A pill meant to prevent HIV infections in high-risk individuals appears to be working, according to two new studies. In one study, conducted in the San Francisco area, there were no new HIV infections among 657 people who took the daily pill Truvada. In the second study, people in the UK taking Truvada had a lower risk of being diagnosed with HIV. Truvada, manufactured by Gilead, is approved in the U.S. for "pre-exposure prophylaxis" (PrEP) of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Truvada may reduce the risk of HIV infection by as much as 92 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The pill doesn't protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), however. While Truvada has worked well in highly controlled clinical trials comparing it to a placebo, some people were concerned about how it would perform in real-world settings. The San Francisco study, published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, involved 657 members of the Kaiser Permanente healthcare system, ages 20 to 68, who used Truvada between 2012 and 2015. The vast majority were gay and bisexual men. During the study, participants had no new HIV infections. Half of them did have new STIs, however. The study can't say whether the high rate of STIs is due to PrEP use. STI diagnoses may have gone up because patients on PrEP tend to make more doctors' visits, allowing more opportunities for infections to be found. Forty-one percent of 143 study participants reported a decrease in condom use. But Dr. Jonathan Volk, an infectious disease physician at Kaiser Perma-
nente San Francisco Medical Center and the study's lead author, said there may be reasonable explanations for this finding, such as people entering monogamous relationships. Given the high rate of STIs and the number of participants who said they didn't use condoms, it's likely that without the pill "we would have seen some new HIV infections," Volk said. A second study of Truvada, published in The Lancet, found that gay men who started on PrEP had significantly fewer new HIV infections than gay men who had to wait a year for the pill. There were one to two new HIV infections per 100 people per year among those on PrEP, compared to about nine new infections per 100 participants per year in the group with delayed access. "When you do the math, the reduction was an 86 percent decrease," said Dr. Kenneth Mayer, the founder, co-Chair and medical research director of The Fenway Institute in Boston. Also, two-thirds of those who took PrEP but were still diagnosed with HIV during the UK research were likely already infected when they started the study, said Mayer, who cowrote an editorial accompanying the study. Once the drug was found to be so effective, the researchers in the UK stopped the study to give all participants PrEP. In the San Franciscoarea study, it's impossible to truly know how many infections may have been prevented without comparing the data to a similar group of people not using PrEP, Volk said. Based on estimates from clinical trial data, as many as 35 new HIV infections may have been prevented among the PrEP users. In the UK study, Mayer said, participants' risky sexual behaviors didn't change after PrEP.
Grand Mosque
rIYAdH, September 12 (reuterS): At least 107 people were killed when a crane toppled over at Mecca's Grand Mosque on Friday, Saudi Arabia's Civil Defence authority said, less than two weeks before Islam's annual haj pilgrimage. At least 238 people were wounded, Saudi Arabia's Civil Defence body said. "All those who were wounded and the dead have been taken to hospital. There are no casualties left at the location," General Suleiman al-Amr, director general of the Civil Defence Authority, told alIkhbariya television. Strong wind and rains had uprooted trees and rocked cranes in the area, he said. A statement by a spokesman for the administration of the mosques in Mecca and Medina said the crane smashed into the part of the Grand Mosque where worshippers circle the Kaaba the black-clad cube towards which the world's 1.6 billion Muslims face to pray. Pictures circulating on social media showed pilgrims in bloodied robes and debris from a part of the crane that appeared to have crashed through a ceiling. Saudi authorities go to great lengths to prepare for the millions of Muslims who converge on Mecca to perform the sacred pilgrimage. Last year, they reduced the numbers permitted to make the haj pilgrimage on safety grounds because of construction work to enlarge the Grand Mosque. The haj, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, has been prone to disasters in the past, mainly from stampedes as pilgrims rush to complete rituals and return home. Hundreds of pilgrims died in such a crush in 2006. Saudi authorities have since spent vast sums to expand the main haj sites and improve Mecca's transport system, in an effort to prevent more disasters.

very Naga, young and old, knows about the Journey of Naga nationhood which cradled from Unity, Brotherhood, love, respect and honor with 99.9%. But on the journey, seen and unseen savage wolf enemy from outside divided the Naga family even to the extent of killing each other. Even from the workers, some rose and distorted the truth to draw away the goal of the Naga struggle. Like the Jews who not only rejected Lord Jesus but also missed Christ who was sent by Jehovah precisely for them (Jews) which is power and wisdom of God, today there are some mem-
bers in Naga family who do not believe in Nagas’ Salvation- Peace Accord. Unbelief is the greatest sin ever in this Universe. All the acts of the evil have erupted because of blame game, arguments, ignorance and destructive criticism. At some point of time, Naga national workers were considered to be mere rubber stamps and traitors, but now they have become signet ring and crown for the Nagas. The Game is over now, but the players are still in the playground. When the players come out from the Ground the winning team will
receive Gold Medals meant for the players only, but the Trophy will go to the entire Nation. However, as a rule medal will not go to a nonplayer, be it state, national or international level. The Core Team of Naga Peace Talks have patiently borne countless pain and suffering in the hard tasks during more than 6-decade old journey for Nagas’ goal, which is the Emblem of our Trophy. This competence comes from God. Now, should we not come together with our Trophy before God and our Lord Jesus Christ and lay it down at His feet to praise
and worship Him? Because, even if we think, say or see many things, but if we do not contribute or involve, we deceive ourselves, and we are nobody at all. God cannot be mocked. We have been told in Acts, 3:22-23 that ‘Anybody who does not listen to Him (Jesus Christ) will be completely cut off from amongst His people’. We, Nagas for Christ, are for peace, love, righteousness and unity in the Holy Spirit. Praise the Lord, Nagas for Christ. Rev. Vitovi Yeptho Pastor (FCF)
An open letter to Athong MAkury
have started to read your article which appeared in Morung Express on 1st Sept. 2015 with interest thinking, our Eastern Naga youth also starting to write on the Naga national issue and sharing one’s own idea is good. But I am very much displeased seeing the article is not sharing your own idea and understanding but just quoting the other’s words without analyzing and scrutinizing of it. Also I felt sad that your article is written in direct response to my article which was appeared in Morung Express on 25th August 2015, with the heading “The most loathsome words in my life”. In which I have clearly stated that the division and bloodshed among the Nagas did not occur because of the Accord but socialism. But you said: “Though NNC treated SA-1975 as invalid it caused bloodshed and resulted in a horrible split. The formation of NSCN itself happened five years later due to the fact that the accord mentions “Nagas will accept the constitution of India unconditionally.” I have time and again explained you about the division among the Nagas. Why then you knowingly have written such irrational statement? How can you say, the Accord caused bloodshed and resulted a horrible split. Even the first division took place in 1980 and formed the so-called NSCN was not because of the Accord as I have already explained you how our differences cropped up only because of Muivah’s socialism. I told you that the Accord was rejected two times by the NNC/FGN, for the first time on Dec. 2nd 1975 and secondly in Eastern Oking on 15th August 1976. In those days no NSCN was existed, and these were done by the NNC/ FGN. Thus the Accord was dead and we have no problem with it. But after we rejected the Accord, why did Isak-Muivah reject the NNC/ FGN is the only question to be answered by them. It is a pity to Khaplang and Khule, because without knowing the policy of Muivah they supported himand made him possible to form the NSCN in Eastern Nagaland. Also the 2nd division in 1988 among the NSCN did not cause either by the Accord. It was happened because Muivah and Isak contemplated to hold talks with the GoI on the basis of Suisa’s proposal. The killings among them were horrible and most brutality. Again third division has had happened when leading by Sema leaders broke out from the NSCN-IM and formed NSCN-U in November 2007. There too most bloodshed took place. The massacre took place on 16th May 2008, 15 men of NSCN-U including a civilian Konyak were killed and again on 4th June 2008, another 12 men of NSCN-U were killed by NSCN-IM and they were buried in the mass graveyards in the history.
The forth division among them took place when Ketovi and Khule broke out from the NSCN-K group and formed NSCN-KK in June 2011, and the fifth division broke out in April 2015 from NSCN-K, because Wangtin and Tikhak rejected Khaplang’s policy and formed NSCN-R. These fourth and fifth divisions too did not cause by the Accord. Why then you said, all these divisions were caused by the Accord? As you are researcher, you have to research the history thoroughly and write truth as truth but should not writethe black as white. I want none of the Naga historian writes that “Isak and Muivah rejected the Accord and formed the NSCN”. Because they did not reject the Accord but use it for their political game. If they truly rejected “to accept the Indian Constitution”as you said;they won’t submit 31-point competencies proposal (Suisa’s proposal) to the GoI and won’t involve in the Indian elections, and neither did sign the Delhi Accord on 3rd August 2015. Because what they are doing through all these is to accept Indian Constitution. Their actions speak the truth that they do not reject the Accord but are heading to accept Indian Constitution. In the Eastern Oking (Headquarters), we wanted to contact our NNC/FGN leaders who were in Western part of Nagaland in those days 1976-1977, in order to know why the Accord was signed, was it good for the Nagas or for the enemy, and what they (authorities) want us to do. And we wanted to keep unity among us, as it was indispensable and foremost for us. When have a meeting from Jan. 9 to 10, 1976 in Langkhiang Camp. Lt. Col. Supong Ao suggested to send some of capable Naga Army officers for meeting with our NNC/FGN leaders. But Muivah has shown no interest to contact the leaders; moreover he totally prohibited us to contact them instead. In February 1976, when Angami and Chakhesang leaders came to know Lt. Col. Pamrei Tangkhul and other four Tangkhuls were going to their Tangkhul Region, they also sent Capt. Neituolie Angamia long with them in order to contact their Angami and Chakhesang leaders. They could safely reach Tangkhul Region by passing through Amimi areas. Capt. Neituolie however did not allow to go to Chakhesang and Angami Regions, but sent him back to Eastern Oking in May 1976 along with Major Proning Tangkhul and seven other Tangkhuls after spending nearly two months in Tangkhul Region. This made badly disappoint to other Naga national leaders, thinking what they are going to do by not allowing us to contact our own leaders. They have done it, to keep the Naga national workers, who were under their leadership, in the dark on the matter of the accord as they wanted to use it. If not they have no reason
to detain Capt. Neituolie in Tangkhul Region without allowing him to go to his Region. According to your statement, you think the Accord gave birth to NSCN as it was formed after five years of the Accord. But you don’t know that the NSCN was conceived in the heart of Muivah long before the accord was signed. Muivah joined the NNC in December 1964 and he was elected as General Secretary of the NNC in February 1965. In 1967, he was sent to China for the first Mission along with 150 Naga Army, the then Brig. Thinoselie was Army Commander of the Goodwill Mission. Before they were leaving Nagaland a meeting was held at a Konyak village, where Rev. Longri Ao urged Muivah not to adopt socialism. But Muivah said, I will put all the Nagas into my pocket just as I put my pen into my pocket, says showing them putting a pen into his pocket. Also said, I will kill all those who opposed my policy like a tiger kills it’s pray. That means he will adopt socialism and whoever opposes his socialism he will kill him. (The story related to me in June 2004 by Mr. Thüngo Konyak who attended the said meeting). When they reached China in 1967, Th. Muivah started to criticize the policy of A.Z. Phizo, the president of the NNC. When Brig. Thinoselie supported and defended the policy of Phizo, Muivah scolded him. To this, Brig. Thinoselie replied: “Am I wrong that I support our leader?” Muivah then said: “You are supporting Phizo for Phizo is your own Angami. But I will never agree with Phizo’s policy, I will go on my own way.” (Related to me by Lt. Gen.Thinoselie on 13th December 2003). Muivah returned to Nagaland in 1972 and sent him back again to China in September 1974, there too he advocated for forming the socialist government. But other Naga leaders rejected his policy. Among them, Brig. Ngam Lao Konyak strongly and openly rejected his policy. He was thus killed by Muivah at KIA’s 2nd Brigade area in December 1975. He was the first victim that killed by Muivahfor opposing his socialism. He did it, as he said, he would kill whoever opposes his policy like a tiger kills it’s pray. This is proof and evidence that the NSCN was not promptly and suddenly born because of the Accord, but it was conceived long before the accord was signed and was born after the Accord. As mentioned above the Accord was dead and the death can’t give birth to a child, so it was not a child of the accord as you think. In the last Goodwill Mission to China in 1977, the GoI sent Major Kathing Tangkhul, it’s ambassador to Burma, to meet Muivah in Beijing China. None of the Naga leaders knew what they have discussed. In July 1978, after he returned back to Nagaland Muivah wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira
Gandhi and gave it to Mr. Thangsoi Khiamniungan of Wonsui village from Poniu village instructing him to send it to Indian Prime Minister. Mr. Thansoi asked Muivah, does he want to send the letter through Nagaland Peace Council? But he said: can a child be got by a man sleep with a man,and instructed him to send it through Chuba a Congress leader. Thangsoi did it so accordingly. None of the Naga leaders knew what he has written to Indian Prime Minister. So the NSCN is a child of India. As I have already mentioned in my earlier article the statement of London based Myanmar Journalist who wrote “Muivah and Isak were contacted and recruited by Mrs. Gandhi’s administration through the Research Analysts Wing, RAW…” in Feb. 1981. It was the fact that India leaders backed to form the NSCN in order to fight against the NNC/FGN or to put it into oblivion, because the NNC/FGN once again firmly stood to defend the sovereignty of Nagaland after the Accord. Following the policy of India the NSCN had been intensively and systematically fighting against the NNC/FGN since its formation. They killed Vice President and General Secretary of the NNC, Kilonsers (Ministers)of the FGN and Generals of Naga Army including more than 200 NNC/FGN workers during the past more than thirty years. But after it splits into two factions, the NNC/FGN could maintain peace with the NSCN-K and have no more fighting among us since 1991. The NSCN-IM continued to fight against the NNC/FGN which is unabated till date as it wants to please Indian leaders. To fight against the NNC/FGN is fighting against the Naga nation. After they arrived at the so-called ceasefire with Indian Army in 1997, NSCN-IM Army were openly going to all nooks and corners of Nagaland and carried out fighting against the NNC/FGN at time joined hands with the Indian Army. Also it has built up more strength during in the socalled ceasefire periods. The GoI is holding talks with its own group built up by itself, and the Nagas, NNC/FGN has no interest with it. It was not the first attempt made by the Indian leaders to make the Nagas fight against each other, but from the beginning the GoI started undeclared war with the Nagas, the GoI formed VVF (Village volunteer Forces) or VG (Village Guard). But none of them effectively fought against the NNC/FGN. Also Revolutionary Government (RG) was formed on November 2, 1968 in order to fight against the NNC/FGN. In March 1969, by joining hands with the Indian Army the RG captured five hundred Naga Army under the Command of Gen. Mowu who returned from China, without firing a single bullet. The RG lastly surrendered en mass to the GoI in Au-
gust 1973 and became Indian Security Forces, BSF (Border Security Forces). But with the NSCN-IM, Indian leaders’ policy becomes more successful. So I have no wonder for their refusal to stop fighting against their own Naga brothers or to say sorry for their misdeed in the history. For they were undeclared Militia of GoI and now it becomes declared Militia, since the Governor Acharyadeclared on 9th September 2015 that 4,000 NSCN-IM soldiers are absorbed into Indian security forces. The Almighty God our Lord marvelously brought peace to Nagaland once again in 1975 is undeniable fact. The NNC/FGN is enthusiastically maintaining God given peace though it rejected the Accord. The NSCN however rejected the peace brought by God and seek their own peace, but what had happened in Nagaland after they have signed peace agreements one after another with the GoI,that is now a history and witness by all the Naga people. Even after fifty one years, they do not realize of the peace brought by God to Nagaland in 1964 and in 1975. Those who rejected peace brought by God committed terrible evil activities in the land. I thank Rev. Kari Longchar who clearly explained on Peace Day, 6thSeptember 2015 that how God Almighty inspired Church leaders to bring peace in Nagaland in 1964, and it is also necessary for the Church leadersto claim and explain how God our Lord uses them to restore peace again in Nagaland in 1975 in order glorify His name, which will be abig blow to those who reject peace brought by God. I am zealous to proclaim the wonderful work of God for bringing peace to Nagaland. But I hate those who tell lies and distorting history. I have been writing true story in the interest of researchers like you young generation so that you may not write truth as false and black as white. Also in the hope that some people those who are unknowingly committing wrong may realize and receive God’s grace once again.I dobelieve that for national unity to tell the truth is necessary, to sincerely admit one’s own misdeed is imperative, to accept the truth and work for justice is foremostand absolutely indispensable. Mr. Athong Makury, as you are a believer of Christ and a Theologian, please research how God bestowed sovereignty to Naga people, how He has been protecting and leading the Naga nation, and how He brought peace to Naga people in 1975. On this matter I have written a book and published it in 2000 with its title “God’s hand upon Nagas and Nagaland”. But do not commit giving false witness again for the killings and divisions among the Nagas as you did on Sept. 1, 2015. Your Uncle Thomas, NNC Member.

Talking about the incident for the first time, Caitlyn who was Bruce Jenner back then and hadn't undergone gender transition said she wasn't speeding when the accident happened. She had so far not commented on the matter due to the ongoing litigation, re-

Addressing the possibility of landing behind bars and in a reference to her potential mugshot, Caitlyn said: "The media wants that picture, don't they?" Her biggest fear, however, is going to a men's jail. "That is
the worst case scenario. I don't know. We'll see... The Men's County Jail... It is an enormous problem that they would put trans-women in Men's County Jail,” she said. But the "I Am Cait" star doesn't regret undergoing the transition. "There's nothing more, nothing better in life to wake up in the morning, look at yourself in the mirror and feel comfortable with yourself and who you are," she added.

ctress Pooja Bedi says this recent culture of bans, especially in Maharashtra, is "ridiculous" and needs to go. "I think this banning business is ridiculous, we should all ban bans. We need to ban this whole culture of shutting down and banning things. If you have to ban something, ban products which are actually harmful for us like cigarettes. Smoking also affects the health of people standing around you. But we won't ban such things. We're told don't eat fish, don't eat meat, don't wear miniskirts and other such things," said Pooja when asked about the recent four-day meat ban in Mumbai.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has banned the sale of meat for four days over a week as the Jain fasting season of Paryushan will be underway. Recently, actress Sonam Kapoor drew flak for her comments on the same issue. Other than this, beef is also banned in Maharashtra. Pooja said: "According to me, this is a democracy and in a democracy, individual choice is the most important thing. If we feel that we're adults and adults are empowered to make important decisions. We can certainly decide if we want to eat beef, pork, fish or wear miniskirts or drink alcohol." Pooja was present along

Deepika, 29, revealed on the sidelines of an event that she was never given pocket money as a child. "My father takes care of my investments so I don't know much about it (where and how the money is invested). I am not too much of a tech person. I don't
understand what apps are about. I prefer clicking pictures and then printing them and putting them in album," Deepika told reporters here. "I give money to my father and he takes good care of it. When I was small, I did not get pocket money," she added. Deepika has been busy shooting Tamasha in which she stars opposite Ranbir Kapoor. The film will hit theatres on November 27. This year, she will also be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani, which also stars Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra.

onald Trump now owns the whole of the Miss Universe Organisation. The business tycoon announced his purchase on Friday. Trump previously owned half the organisation but finalised negotiations on purchasing the rest this week. ‘Just purchased NBC’s half of The Miss Universe Organization and settled all lawsuits against them. Now
own 100% -- stay tuned!’ Trump wrote on Twitter. Miss World has suffered from its association with the Presidential hopeful, as the Washington Times reports. Trump’s controversial comments about Mexican immigrants caused outrage and prompted NBC, who owned half of the organisation, to cancel their broadcast. The Spanish language
Univision also refused to broadcast of the competition. In response, Trump filed a $500 million lawsuit against Univision. It is uncertain if he took any legal action against NBC although, as NY Times reports, his tweet implies he had: ‘settled all lawsuits against them [NBC].’ Trump has owned a stake in the Miss Universe organisation since 1996. The televised pageant has suffered a decline in viewers over the past few decades. This year’s competition, following NBC and Univision’s decision to cancel broadcasting, was left without a television
provider and it only attracted low ratings when it was broadcast on the cable channel Reelz. The Miss Universe Organisation has long been hailed as outdated and sexist. Even attempts by the organisation to ditch its swimsuit competition, considered the ‘most sexist’ aspect of the annual event, have done little to alter Miss Universe’s image. However, as Trump is hardly the embodiment of enlightenment, considering his previous comments about women, it seems as though it’s a match made in uber-conservative heaven.

Serena finally falls after Paes & Martina Hingis defy year of living dangerously age, win mixed doubles title

NEW YORK, SEptEmbER 12 (REutERS): Serena Williams had been a vulnerable conqueror at this year's majors, living dangerously and dicing with defeat on numerous occasions as she tried to become only the fourth woman to complete the calendar Grand Slam. On Friday, her luck finally ran out at the U.S. Open, and on a court where she had not been beaten since 2011. In her 12th three-set contest of the electrifying 2015 run, Williams met her match in Italian doubles expert Roberta Vinci, who ended the American's bid for a share of tennis history with a shocking 2-6 6-4 6-4 upset victory in the semi-finals. Williams, dominating the sport at the ripe old tennis age of 33, had repeated over and over that she felt no
pressure in trying to add her name to a list comprised of Maureen Connolly (1953), Margaret Court (1970) and Steffi Graf (1988). She tried her best to maintain that mantra after her stunning semi-final defeat on an Arthur Ashe Stadium court that had been so kind to her in the past. "I don't want to talk about how disappointing it is for me," Williams said during a tetchy post-match conference during which she repeatedly refused to answer questions. "I told you guys I don't feel pressure," she insisted. "I never felt pressure. I never felt that pressure to win here. I said that from the beginning." On court, the world number one appeared impatient, flustered and weighed down by expectations against 32-year-old Vinci, over-hitting groundstrokes
and second serve returns in an effort to overwhelm and discourage the Italian, who refused to shy away from the daunting challenge. It was only the third loss in 56 matches for Williams this year and came against an opponent who had never taken a set off her in four previous meetings and was appearing in her first grand slam semi-final. Despite the defeat, Williams has nothing to be ashamed of after an extraordinary season produced Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon wins to take her career grand slam total to 21, third on the all-time list behind Court (24) and Graf (22).
for the second "Serena Slam" of her career after first accomplishing the feat when winning the 2003 Australian Open. Yet Williams had to fight through lapses along the way. The world number one was extended to three sets twice at the Australian Open, five times at the French Open and twice more at Wimbledon. She even relied on her champion's survival instincts when she stood two points from defeat against British outsider Heather Watson in the third round at Wimbledon. But whereas rivals in the calibre of her sister Venus and twice grand slam champion Victoria Azarenka managed to stretch Serena to three sets at the majors, delivering the killer punch seemed to be a feat beyond their capability. It was left to a 43rd ranked, 300-1 long-shot to show the world that Serena Williams could be beaten. The Vinci match was the top seed's third three-setter at the U.S. Open and the one that ended an amazing streak of 33 consecutive grand slam match wins. "I made a couple of tight shots, to be honest, but maybe just about two," she said in what seemed an understatement. "Other than that, I don't think I was that tight."
