Guwahati, September 8 (iaNS): Six months after the gruesome lynching of a rape accused in Nagaland's commercial town Dimapur, the Gauhati High Court on Monday directed the CBI to conduct an inquiry into the incident. A division bench comprising Chief Justice (acting) K. Sreedhar Rao and Justice P.K. After the incident, a man named Rajeeb Kalita filed a PIL demanding a CBI investigation into the case. Advocate Konwar, appearing for the petitioner,

Nagaland Police had also formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the incident, leading to the arrest of 58 people for their involvement in the crime.

Restore peace & communal harmony: KA Students’ bodies Submits memo seeking PM “immediate intervention” Dimapur, September 8 (mexN): Six tribal Students' bodies of Karbi Anglong has submitted a joint memorandum today the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi seeking his “immediate intervention on the Anti-Tribal Bills” passed by Manipur Government, and to “restore Peace and Communal Harmony with a humble request to address tribal issues thereof.” The memorandum submitted through the Deputy Commissioner, Karbi Anglong, Assam was signed by Karbi Students' Association (KSA); Rengma Naga Students, Union (RNSU); Hmar Students Association (HSA); Kuki Students' Organization (K50); Students' & Youth Council (SYC); and Khasi Students Union (KSU) of Karbi Anglong, Assam. The Students fraternity, who are peace loving and law abiding in its stand and purposes, request you to personally look into the problems faced by “our fellow tribal indigenous people” of Manipur, to restore Peace and Communal Harmony in Manipur State in particular and the Northeast Region in general, the memo stated. Drawing the PM’s attention to three recent con-
60-hr bandh in Churachandpur district
imphal, September 8 (pti): A 60-hour bandh is on at Churachandpur from today to protest against three bills passed in Manipur Assembly relating to the protection of indigenous people of the state. The bandh called by Joint Action Committee (JAC) of tribal organisations started at 12 noon, JAC sources said. JAC has given a 10-days ultimatum to Hill Area Committee of Manipur Assembly to withdraw the Protection of Manipur People Bill, 2015, Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms (Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2015 and Manipur Shops and Establishments (Second Amendment) Bill, 2015 which were passed on August 31. troversial bills passed by the Manipur Government on August 31, the student bodies also argued that it (the bills) was against the rights and interest of the indigenous Tribal people. “It overlooks Article 21 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP). We particularly disagree on the newly amended bills which directly infringes and discriminates the rights of the Indigenous Tribal populace living in Manipur,” it added. The Joint memo further condemned, in strongest term, the killing of 9 people and injuries to many others by the security forces during the protest aftermath the passing of the bills and maintained that Chief Minister of Manipur, Okram Ibobi Singh, “himself is responsible” for the tragic incidents.
The sources said if the Hill Area Committee failed to withdraw the bills, all its members would face public boycott. Police said the situation in Churachandpur district was under control and there was no report of any untoward incident so far. All educational institutes, including government or private run schools and colleges, were closed as JAC announced closure of educational institutions located at Churachandpur town till the disposal of nine bodies, who died last week in the agitation against the passage of the bills. The JAC has said the bodies will not be claimed by their families until the bills were withdrawn.
Express their deep sorrow and solidarity to “our brothers” and decrying his anti-tribal policy, the student bodies also insisted that he (Ibobi Singh) has no moral rights to continue as the Chief Minister and he should step down to restore Peace and Harmony in Manipur. It also appealed the Manipur government to compensate at the earliest on the bereaved families and the injured persons. The joint bodies also urged “our Tribal brothers” to raise voice democratically for a meaningful solution and not through violent means. Consequently, the memo seeks immediate intervention by PM to request the Government of Manipur to “repeal or revoke” the said amended Bill as affects the Tribals Rights. “We also want you to address the issues raised
by the Tribal People of the State in particular and the North Eastern States in general, which is to protect the lives and properties of the tribal indigenous people from such type of government set ups,” it pleaded. This would ensure, the memo maintained, that the tribal indigenous people could “govern themselves, determine their future freely, develop their own affairs without much interference” which in turn would results in “maximum contribution to the nation, India.” The Memo was appended by KSA president Laichan Engleng; KSO president Lengin Singson; KSU president Paul Sten; RNSU president Phenpiga Rengma; HAS president James Selate Thiek; and SYC Convenor Dr. Mongve Rongpi.
Do not politicise flood problem: Manipur Dy CM has totally ‘sold out’ Assam Governor
tribal rights: Zeliangrong Frontal orgs Dimapur, September 8 (mexN): The joint meeting of the Zeliangrong Frontal organizations in Assam Manipur & Nagaland (AMN) has “out-rightly” accused and condemned the “irresponsibility and the total sell out” of tribal rights by Manipur Dy CM Gaikhangam. In a joint press communiqué, the Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN), All Zeliangrong Students’ Union (AMN) Zeliangrong Youth Front (AMN), Zeliangrong Students’ Union Manipur maintained there was “series of parley” aftermath of the passing of the Bills on August 31, however it alleged that instead of defending the tribal rights as the head and in-charge of the Hills Department of Manipur, the Dy CM has repeatedly stated that these “bills will not infringe upon the tribal interest of Manipur.” The three bills were Protection of Manipur People’s Bill 2015, The Manipur Land Reforms & Land Revenue MLR&LR Bill (7th Amendment) 2015, the Manipur Shop and Establishment Bill (2nd Amendment), 2015. In this context, it argued that Gaikhangam is the stumbling block to the future development of all the tribal people in Manipur and Zeliangrong in Particular. The MLR&LR Act 1960 has been extended even to Khoupum valley, Tamenglong District and other hills districts under his initiative contrary to the claimed that the said Act is confined only to valley districts, it claimed adding that he even attempted to extend to same to Noney (Longmai) Area but could do so due to “tooth and nail” opposition by the local people. The same act was has already extended to Chandel, Churachandpur Dist and Sadar Hill ADC and Gaikhangam’s repeated statement that the bills does not “impinge upon tribal interests” is a “blatant misleading of the people” the joint meeting further asserted. “The leadership of Gaikhangam and Ibobi government of Manipur, is working to ruin and invalidate the HAC” the Zeliangrong organisations insisted adding that, “This pro-
cedural lapsed was in fact the greatest mistake in the past of the tribal representatives particularly Zeliangrong MLAs.” Any matter related to the tribal and the Hills districts should come through the Hill Area Committee (HAC), it argued but the present MLAs made it “non-functional” and enabling the “dominant community” to take 2015 as a reference on “any matter related to the Hill districts” and give “the gateway to permanently do away with this HAC.” Accusing the tribals MLA of not raising “at least an objection” in the floor of the Assembly, it demanded their resignation owning moral responsibility. “All the ugly incidence and unprecedented violence could have been prevented if the incumbent MLAs/tribal representatives consulted with the civil societies leaders, intellectual circle on the bills related to the affairs of the Hills districts of Manipur,” it said. The joint parley of the Zeliangrong frontal organizations also re-affirms its stands demanding the “immediate resignation” of all the three Zeliangrong MLAs saying that those who sold away the “rights and land of the Zeliangrong people” has no rights in represent them. The joint meeting also considered the clarification regarding the bills by Dy CM and CM as “deceptious interpretations” implying that the tribal does not know “how to read the Bills and lack understanding.” Alluding the present situation of Manipur to Internal Emergency (MISA) in 1975, it further maintained that the government of Manipur has also violated the freedom of press by blocking social medias (internet) and restricting communication mobility. “On any eventualities which demean and affect the interest of the Hill Districts of Manipur, the Zeliangrong Frontal Organisations will face defending the interest and rights of the tribal and Zeliangrong until those Anti-Tribal Bills have been declared null and void or repealed,” it declared.

But as an ex-BJP man, I will tell him [Sarbananda Sonowal] not to make floods a political issue. The State government is my government,” Acharya said at a press conference. not moved fast enough since taking office. Annual growth slowed to 7 percent in the June quarter. “Mr. Modi ran a successful state. He campaigned for 2 years saying he knew what to do. He has been there 15 months with the largest majority since independence yet little has happened,” U.S. investor Jim Rogers told Reuters Trading India on Tuesday. Rogers recently announced he had sold his India investments. After farmer protests forced the government to drop a major land reform and opposition parties delayed a growthboosting tax overhaul, expectations are growing that Modi will soon unveil new measures to make it easier for foreign money to enter India. The government predicts India’s economy will grow at 8 percent or more in 2015/16, prodded by government spending. Yet private investment has been slow to pick up, with banks and businesses hobbled by bad debts and high lending rates. In the real economy, there are few signs of an major economic recovery. In the construction and diamond polishing industries, for example, there have been large layoffs.

called bankers and billionaires to his residence on Tuesday to brainstorm on how India can manage global economic turbulence, including opportunities for Asia’s third-largest economy in China’s market and growth woes. The morning meeting in New Delhi was attended by tycoons including India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, central bank governor Raghuram Rajan, economists and state and private bank chiefs. At the gathering, industry chamber ASSOCHAM told Modi policy makers needed to act fast to “bullet proof” India from global jitters - calling for a deep cut in interest rates and new duties to stop dumping of Chinese products such as steel. India’s macroeconomic situation has improved considerably since the “taper tantrum” of 2013, not least thanks to lower prices for the commodities it imports. Then, inflation, for example, was at double digits - it has since halved. The International Monetary Fund considers India’s economy a rare bright spot among emerging markets and Modi sees a chance to attract more foreign investment as money flows out of China. But it will not be easy to turn China’s

luckNoW, September 8 (iaNS): In a fresh setback to the beleaguered Sahara India Pariwar, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the license of its holding company Sahara India Financial Corporation Limited (SIFCL), officials said on Tuesday. The action has been taken by the department of non-banking supervision of the RBI, in Kanpur. The move comes in wake of several irregularities and ignoring financial rules and regulations by Sahara, an official further informed. The notice cancelling its license to conduction financial business has been sent to the Kapurthala head quarter of the Sahara India. The move is being seen as the ‘final nail’ in the fortunes of the once-fledgling company as the SIFCL was its core wing from which money was collected through small time subscribers and then routed to other wings such as media, real estate and others. With its chairman Subrata Roy ‘Sahara’ already in jail for the past one year plus, the RBI action, many fear, could “break the financial spine” of the organisation. Under the new order, the Sahara India would be barred from any sort of financial transactions. The RBI had in 2008 barred the company from taking any deposits from the people under its chit fund operations.

Corrigendum
In regard to celebration of Teacher's Day in Medziphema Town which was published in local dailies on September 7, it has been clarified that the sentence, “Medziphema Town Women Organisation presented a special gift to A.P Joseph” should be read as “Medziphema Town Students’ Organisation presented a special gift to A.P Joseph of SFS. Hr Secondary School.”
A CLAriFiCATion Apropos my article dated Sept .7, 2015 under the caption: “An encounter with the Indian Army,” I wish to make a clarification. In the said article, I had used the words … “our whole house was Searched …” while mentioning about the activities going on in our front porch and how I was treated well by the officers and soldiers. Now the word “search” in the context of military operations implies, ransacking of a house and upturning every item inside a room. I wish to clarify here, that no such ransacking of our house was done on this occasion except for some of the Jawans walking into
our rooms to check whatever they were after. These family rooms are located at the back of the porch which forms the second row of our house at Medziphema. I am making this clarification because the Major in command of the operation, has requested me to kindly give this clarification. I also wish to add that in the article, I had wrongly mentioned the months with September coming before August! The date of the incident at our house was Sept.1, 2015 and the date of K. Zhimomi phoning me was August 29. The errors are regretted. Kaka D. Iralu

The Role of Teachers Towards a Corrupt free Society
THE MORUNG EXPRESS

‘Schools’ are not only a ‘privileged’ space but a sacred place filled with potential human resources of different seeds waiting to be nurtured.
C
orruption today has reached astounding proportions rampantly occurring in multiple manifestations and has spread its amorphous tentacles in every possible sphere of human activity. This ubiquitous phenomenon is intensified by the question of livelihood, social status and survival in the evolution of a socially accepted standard of living. It is one of the greatest impediments to growth and development of a society. It not only is depressing but also dissipates hope. It is here that a teacher can regenerate hope for a clean and better society. First and foremost, Teachers need to distinguish themselves from the rest in not only demonstrating profound knowledge but more importantly let develop a firm moral character in the students and through acts that are in tune which the profession for which nobility stands out. It is a tragedy to have incapacitated teachers, without any calling and vision entering this profession for the sake of one’s survival; the not so dedicated and those that follows the disgraced path of following the ‘unchristian ethics’ of keeping proxy teachers. On a passing note, one is made to wonder how many teachers actually felt bad about the education minister declaring a holiday on 7th Sept’ having regrets that a particular lesson plan for that day was missed and also in consideration of the number of actual working days and ‘teaching’ hours in a calendar year? The greatest challenge and responsibility of building a corrupt free society calls for visionary teachers who can play a very cardinal role being at the very core of human resource development. Schools are not only a ‘privileged’ space but a sacred place filled with potential human resources of different seeds waiting to be nurtured. The importance of a teacher as an architect in building a clean society demands that only the best and the intelligent and competent members be qualified for this noble profession. More so this noble profession calls for utmost moral integrity that ought to finally get inculcated in the students. This should be the utmost moral responsibility of a teacher along with its associated professional ethos. Every society has a set of established morals, virtues and values and it is the responsibility of the teacher to consciously give efforts in developing it in the minds and hearts of the students that they never grow out of it. Building a strong character in the students is tantamount to creating a corrupt free society. As moral compasses, they should effectively bridge a relationship with the conscience of the students in such a way that they learn to act morally in ways that will produce the best desirable consequences for the positive transformation of our future society. Hope dissipates from a society that is depressingly filled with negativities. To produce a transformative effect, there is need for visionary teachers who holds the future of a strong society through the students. Teaching needs to go beyond the ‘text books’ ritual and to begin from the heart. The ultimate mark of a teacher rests in teaching deep from the heart, which will lead to building a strong relationship with the students. This will create a healthy learning mental wavelength in generating interest and broaden their learning capacities. At the end of the day, teachers are life changing role models and no other personality can have an influence on the students more profound than a teacher. What are the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals
I
n late September, world leaders will meet at the United Nations in New York to adopt a new global plan of action for ending poverty, known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). What are the SDGs? A set of 17 goals and 169 targets aimed at resolving the social, economic and environmental problems troubling the world. Covering the next 15 years, the SDGs replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which expire this year. Who decided the SDGs? Governments came up with the idea at the Rio+20 conference on sustainable development in Brazil in 2012. A working group with representatives from 70 countries then drafted a proposed set of goals. At the same time, the United Nations ran public consultations around the world and an online survey asking people about their priorities for the goals. This summer governments negotiated a final version of the SDGs, due to be adopted by 193 countries at a Sept. 25-27 summit at the United Nations in New York. What did the MDGs achieve? The United Nations says the MDGs led to successes including: • a drop in the number of people living in extreme poverty by more than half, to 836 million in 2015 • gender parity in primary schools in the majority of countries • a decline in the rate of children dying before their fifth birthday by more than half since 1990 • a fall of 45 percent worldwide in the maternal mortality ratio • over 6.2 million malaria deaths averted and 37 million lives saved by tuberculosis prevention and treatment • access to improved drinking water sources for 2.6 billion people between 1990 and 2015. So why do we need the SDGs? • Around 800 million people still live in extreme poverty and suffer from hunger, with fragile and conflict-torn states experiencing the highest poverty rates • Between 2008 and 2012, 144 million people were displaced from their homes by natural disasters, a number predicted to rise as the planet warms, bringing more extreme weather and rising seas • Water scarcity affects 40 percent of the global population and is projected to increase • Some 946 million people still practice open defecation • Gender inequality persists in spite of more representation for women in parliaments and more girls going to school. If we meet the SDGs, how will the world improve? The 17 goals aim to achieve these wider aims by 2030: • end poverty and hunger everywhere • combat inequalities within and between countries • build peaceful, just and inclusive societies • protect human rights and promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls • ensure lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources • create conditions for sustainable, inclusive and sustained economic growth, shared prosperity and decent work for all. What's new and different about the SDGs? The United Nations says the SDGs go much further than the previous goals, because they address the root causes of poverty and pledge to leave no one behind, including vulnerable groups. They also emphasise the need to urgently tackle climate change and protect the environment through a shift to sustainable consumption and production. The SDGs are intended to be universal, applying to all countries rather than just the developing world. And they recognise the key role of the private sector in pursuing and financing sustainable development, in partnership with governments and civil society.

e are at it again. India and Pakistan are talking a lot these days, mostly about why they don’t want to talk to each other. Our national security advisers were supposed to meet last week. And they were supposed to talk about terrorism. Instead, they did what they do best: They hurled accusations at each other about how the other side doesn’t really know how to talk, and the meeting was canceled. India accuses Pakistan of sponsoring terrorism in India. Pakistan accuses India of sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan, and of having bad manners. To India, it seems obvious that Pakistani militants were behind the 2008 attacks in Mumbai, and it is exasperated that the world won’t punish Pakistan for that. It is upset that the man accused in the attacks, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, was released on bail after a leisurely trial in Pakistan, and was able to produce a baby while in prison. India is also upset that the plot’s alleged mastermind, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, is allowed to roam freely, addressing rallies despite the bounty the American government has placed on his head. In its own defense Pakistan points to all the hundreds of suspected terrorists it has killed in the last year and a half. It reminds India that some 60,000 Pakistanis have been killed by terrorists. India responds by saying: You are only killing the terrorists who kill Pakistanis while protecting the terrorists who kill Indians. Lurking under this neighborly rage are stereotypes that refuse to fade. India thinks Pakistan is an aging terrorism addict that keeps hitting up the world for loose change so it can get its next fix. Pakistan thinks India is an old uncle who has come into some money late in life but still doesn’t know how to dress. India says Pakistan is the pesky kid who is always picking a fight in the neighborhood. Pakistan says India is the real bully — and if you don’t believe it, go ask the other kids on the block: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal. Still
R
ecently, two African-American women took to the stage during a Bernie Sanders campaign event to protest for #BlackLivesMatter, a movement confronting issues related to racism and police violence in America. They were cheered by some and jeered by others. Their presence made the movement visible in ways that other events — disturbingly — had not. A friend of mine posted on Facebook, “These women thought they could interrupt Bernie and not have repercussions. They need to learn their place.” (Emphasis mine, but it feels appropriate after talking to the original poster about the intent behind the post.) What? Are you kidding me? I was ticked. Amazingly, though, my friend’s Facebook feed began to blow up mostly with affirmations regarding his post. A few people did try to question his statement, but were shouted down as soon as their posts went up. Many jumped in to affirm that these women — and I assume, specifically, black women — should not be taking the stage being rude to a politician. I asked, “What if they were men? Would that be better?” Again, I was surprised that some people actually would have seen that action by men differently. And that it was just “not classy” for women to do what they did. Isn’t it 2015? Why would anyone assume that women needed to stay in their “place?” And why did they believe that speaking one’s mind was not classy? Throughout history — both in the Bible and in other places — women
don’t believe it? Go ask the Kashmiris. India says no one should ask the Kashmiris anything because Pakistan has poisoned their minds. India would like the world to make Pakistan stand in a corner of the classroom and again and again write on the blackboard, “I have been a bad boy.” Pakistan claims the dog ate its homework, and that it is busy hunting the dog down. Pakistan wants the world to believe that it has changed. India wants the world to remember that Pakistan supported the Taliban and sheltered Osama bin Laden. While the two governments aren’t talking to each other, their pundits shout from both sides. It’s not pretty. Indians: You are protecting Saeed. Pakistanis: You elected a prime minister some have accused of inciting deadly religious riots in Gujarat; before he became prime minister, the man wasn’t even allowed into the United States. Indians: You are practically hostage to your army and intelligence agencies. What do you know about democracy? After that the level of debate really rises. Pakistan accuses India of being jealous of Pakistan’s close friendship with China and their recent deal over an economic corridor. India says it’s Pakistan that’s jealous, because India is the new China. This line of reasoning has held for nearly 70 years. Three generations have lived either with war or the imminent threat of war. A bunch of alleged Pakistani gunmen storm the Indian Parliament, and we are on the brink of war. Some dead Pakistani Taliban are found to be uncircumcised, and are declared agents of India. A few months ago the Indian media ran triumphant reports of Indian security forces capturing a Pakistani spy pigeon. Some among India’s latest breed of democrats and bureaucrats fantasize about India sending an elite commando into Pakistan to take out Saeed, like the United States did with Osama bin Laden. Pakistan reminds them that it has nuclear bombs. India
says its nuclear bombs are bigger and better. Are these two nuclear powers talking to each other, or are they two teenagers playing a game of dare? Maybe it’s time India and Pakistan did away with the pretense that they want peace. Hundreds of miles of barbed wires on the border, countless searchlights and mile-long visa forms haven’t made us feel secure about each other. Pakistanis who have visited India or met a reallife Indian will tell you, “They are just like us.” Indians say the same of Pakistanis. Which makes all of them sound as though they had been expecting to discover a nation of feral animals. Then again, in large parts of India and Pakistan, there is no enmity and there is no love. Most people don’t even make much of the fact that the two countries are neighbors. As a Pakistani when you fill out an Indian visa form, you are required not only to give your father’s name but also information about your grandfather and grandmother if they were Pakistani. A few years ago while I was traveling to India to attend a literary festival, I was stopped at an immigration desk in Mumbai airport. The authorities were on the lookout for another Mohammed Hanif whose father shared the same name as my late dad’s. After a long interrogation about my ancestors I was asked to write a statement on a plain piece of paper: “I, Mohammed Hanif, son of Mohammed Siddiq, am not the Mohammed Hanif son of Mohammed Siddiq who is wanted in India.” I happily wrote and signed and was allowed in. It is true that some of our ancestors took to mass murder at the time of partition. But many more didn’t. Maybe we should all write our names and our fathers’ names over and over, to keep reassuring one another that we are here not to kill, but to talk. Mohammed Hanif is the author of the novels “A Case of Exploding Mangoes” and “Our Lady of Alice Bhatti.”
Redefining a Woman’s Place dr. Karyn l. Wiseman Sojourners have been silenced or put “in their place.” Which is why this passage, from Mark 7 (24:37), always makes me say, “Wow! That Syrophoenician woman just called out Jesus when he tried to shut her down.” I love that when Jesus appears to squash her voice and tries to silence her, she calls him out. She refuses to assume her “place” under the table eating scraps. And that is so bold and confident. In the first century world, women had few rights and few opportunities to voice their opinions. In Jesus’ world, she was the “other” — a woman, a Syrophoenician, and someone likely not invited to the house where Jesus encountered her. She was a Greekspeaking foreigner in this scenario. She was challenging the social norms. Jesus’ initial mission was to his own people, the Jews. And he lets her know that she is not a part of his intended audience. Is she challenging him to expand his mission? Or is she simply trying to get her daughter healed? It is after the resurrection that Jesus’ mission to the Gentile community begins in earnest, but here in this passage Jesus is chal-
lenged on this assumption of being sent to the Jews first and foremost. And after he is challenged, he answers in a positive manner. He affirms the Syrophoenician woman and heals her daughter. Her faith got her what she wanted. But it would not have happened had she not interrupted him in his attempt to find a quiet moment. It would not have occurred without her persistence. She probably knew “her place” since she was a first century woman in a culture where women had little to no voice or power. But she did not stay there. She acknowledged “her place,” but she asked for mercy and had the faith that her request could/would be granted. And her faith paid off. Her daughter was healed. So what about these women who took to the stage for #BlackLivesMatter? When the women took to the stage, they got into a heated verbal confrontation with one of Bernie Sanders’ campaign staff persons for several minutes before Marissa Johnson was allowed to take the microphone to speak. But she was booed before, during, and after her short speech. Whether you agree with her tactics or not, she got her point across. Some
WRITE-WING
heard the challenge — others simply saw a woman with no class who was rude. Many saw what they wanted to see or were prone to see, due to the lens of privilege they experience in their own lives. #BlackLivesMatter is one of the biggest grassroots movements in recent history to address race and racism. It has caught fire on social media and is moving into the realm of public political discourse. And that’s where it should be. But people wanted to put her in “her place.” People wanted to shut her up. Whether it was because she was interrupting someone, or that she was a woman, or the fact that she was AfricanAmerican is an important question — it’s probably different for different people. For my friend on Facebook, it seemed to be gender (at least) that led him to make that post. In a private message, it was made evident to me that the poster has an opinion about the “place” of women that I have serious disagreements with. As a woman in ministry and as a woman in academia, my voice has been challenged and people have attempted to silence me, but I have tried to not be defined by their definition of “my place.” If you are a man, be an ally for the women in your life — in your family, at your work place, in public and private, and in all the ways that you can. If you are a woman, be bold and persistent. As the famous quote says, Wellbehaved women seldom make history. Be bold and be persistent. Be who you were made to be. Don’t stay in your “place” defined by others. Find your own place and go make some history.

THE MORUNG EXPRESS
How 40 minutes with the Dalai Lama changed my world view
7
The Newspaper with an Opinion The Morung Express
The framework agreementbetween GOI and the NSCN (IM) has been in the news, social media and the talk of dinner conversations ever since the signing. There is scepticismmixed with hope. If a final solution that is acceptable to all does come about, then it would be a game changer. It could result in opportunities and a chance for Naga society to focus on improving our quality of life without the distraction that a volatile situation brings. It could result in the public being able to focus on bringing corruption down. It might also allow the police to actually stand up and do their job without fear of reprisal from the groups. At the same time, there is also a possibility that the accord fails to bring peace and bloodshed and more factions emerge.
The Naga National Movement and the Final Settlement I meet hundreds of interesting people through my job as a journalist, but there’s only one that almost all new people I meet ask me about: Tenzin Gyatso, his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet
I
Danielle Batist
t had been on the radar for months, but it didn’t really sink in until I saw the lush and green Scottish mountains and felt the plane descending. As I touched down in Inverness just before dawn, I pictured the Dalai Lama and his entourage, making their way up through these stunning landscapes by car. Just one night remained before I would embark on one of the most special reporting duties of my career. That evening I met my favourite Scottish photographer Simon Murphy in a local bar. Over a pint, we tried to pin down our luck. How on earth had we managed to get ourselves a 40-minute private audience with one of the most respected spiritual leaders on earth? The Dalai Lama wasn’t doing many media appearances during his UK trip in June 2012, but he had agreed to speak to us. He was delighted by the idea that his interview would directly support people who experienced homelessness. The reason for this was that I had secured the story for the International Network of Street Papers. Through its news agency, street papers - sold by homeless people in over 40 countries - can republish global and exclusive content for free. Vendors buy magazines for half the cover price and sell them on, keeping the proceeds for themselves. The next morning, we made our way to a historical castle outside of Inverness. We were welcomed by some of the travelling party who pointed to the next room, where we caught a glimpse of the Dalai Lama having his lunch. Once rested up from his morning travels, he came through to the reception room and shook our hands. “Welcome,” he said in a warm voice, as if he was fully at home in these Scottish surroundings. The photographer took some snaps, the aides took
their seats quietly in the corner in case of any translation issues and I took mine on the sofa alongside the Dalai Lama’s cream-coloured armchair. I pressed the button on my voice recorder and he smiled and nodded, inviting me to ask him what I wanted to know. “If you had one question you could ask the Dalai Lama, what would you ask?” I asked friends, family and colleagues in the weeks before the interview. Many wanted to know about hope, happiness and purpose in life, in some way or another. I also asked the street paper editors and readers around the world what they’d like to know. After all, I was writing for them, rather than having a personal conversation fuelling my own curiosity alone. As it happened, the entire 40 minutes that followed fuelled my curiosity in ways I could not have imagined. They also sparked more questions, thoughts and ideas, even long after the interview was over. I had a list of about 11 questions I wanted to ask, but I hadn’t anticipated just how much of an orator the Dalai Lama is. Basically, as soon as I asked him the first question, he started talking and I started writing, nodding along and taking it all in. It wasn’t until I transcribed the tape at home that I fully appreciated the wisdom and insights within each answer. When researching for the interview, I had been amazed to find that the official Dalai Lama Twitter account had 4.5m followers (this has since almost tripled to a mind-boggling 11.8m) and 4m on Facebook (currently 12m)! One of his then recent popular tweets read: “I am increasingly convinced that the time has come to find a way to think about spirituality and ethics beyond religion all together.” I was intrigued by that and asked him why he believed that. Here’s what he said, word for word. “Obviously, among 7bn human beings there is quite a big portion of people who have not much interest in religion. And within the group of believers, again I think there is quite a big portion of people not very serious about it. For many, religion has become just a daily ritual, but is not taken seriously. So the indication that they may attend Sunday church or a temple, including Buddhist, does not mean much. They pray to Buddha or God, but in their real life they have no hesitation to get involved in creating injustice, telling lies, corruption, bullying and cheating. These activities are, I think, against every major religion and traditional teaching. That indicates that a group of religious believers has a lack of conviction. “Traditional spiritual teachings and principles are an immense benefit to oneself. The people who do not take their religion seriously lack this knowledge, and religion is of no relevance to their lives. Therefore, we need a wider way to spread the conviction that moral ethics are really the basis of a hap-
py life. This is true on an individual level as well as on a family, community and humanity level. That is something common for all major religions and traditions, as well as non-believers. Everybody wants to be happy and have a happy family. “Many people have the attitude that if you have money or power, your life becomes something meaningful and makes you happy. That is a mistake. Happiness and sorrow itself are part of the mind; they are a mental experience. The real way to reduce pain and sadness and increase happiness and joyfulness must be found through mental training. Some of my friends are very rich, they have plenty of money. And of course, because they are a wealthy person, they are also quite influential in society. But as a person, they are very unhappy, I noticed that. That shows that money, vanity and power are not an adequate source of happiness.” And that was just one question. Needless to say, I didn’t have time to ask all the ones on my list, but I still got quite a few in. I have listened to many of his public speeches and interviews since, and often find that I recognise his words from answers he gave me. Rather than repeating himself, I think it is a testament to his world view that so many “low level” issues can be resolved, or at least better understood, by looking at the bigger picture. Interviewing him and feeling his calm and spiritual presence in a quiet room has changed the way I look at some bigger picture issues, too. It is hard to put into words, but it is about an interconnectedness that I hadn’t necessarily appreciated enough before. It was one of the street paper vendors in the US who said it better than I could have myself. A total of 72 street magazines in 27 countries published the interview, with translations into many languages, including Japanese, Norwegian and Slovak. Homeless vendors made £1.1m cash profit from sales of the special edition. Robert, vendor of Groundcover News in Michigan, felt that the Dalai Lama’s perspective really conveyed some of the emotions he felt, including those of what it means to be homeless. “He does a good job providing a whole world view,” he said. And I agreed. About the writer: I am a freelance journalist based in London. Over the past fourteen years I have covered many problems: global and local stories of poverty, exclusion and injustice. Increasingly, I moved beyond those stories to include the solutions I found. I tell stories of change from across the globe, and find people with ideas that work. I witnessed the birth of the new nation of South Sudan and interviewed the Dalai Lama. National and international media outlets I reported for include Al Jazeera, BBC and the Guardian, but I also work with social enterprises like The Big Issue magazine and street papers around the world. I am co-founder of the Constructive Journalism Project (http://www.constructivejournalism.org) and founder of Jounopreneur (http://journopreneur. me), a platform to help freelancers adapt to the changing media landscape. I believe that while both the medium and the message are changing, the need for good storytelling remains.
Pension Plans
I
n 1996,the Olympics were held in Atlanta City, USA, and the event was covered “live” by most television networks. Out of all the events, gymnastics was a favourite ofmy sister and me. We used to be glued to our television sets, watching young girls doing unbelievable spins, both on the floors and on the bars. What was most astounding was their age; 14, 15, 16 and at the most 19. For a gymnast, the peak of their career is 16, I was told many years later. Andthereafter, they retire. Of course, retirement has different meanings for different people. If we divide our life into three stages, the first stage is about preparation. In this stage, we educate
ourselves and get ready for the chosen profession doctor, magician, social worker, beautician, etc. And then comes the performance stage. In this stage, we earn and save. Soon it is time tocall it a day, and retire. And during our retirement, we rely on the assets we had builtduring our performance years. As a welfare State and as itsbiggest employer, thegovernment used to give pension to all its employees. However, things have changed now. In 2004,the governmentintroduced the New Pension Systems (NPS), mandatory for all its employees(exceptthe armed forces personnel). It came into effect on April 1, 2008. Thereafter, onMay 1, 2009, the government opened the fund to every citizen of our country, in a voluntary mode. NPS is a purely contributory system, where you pay until 60 and you get back your money as and when chosen by you (conditions apply) to lead your retirement. Ineed not explain to you what it is,as most of the compulsory contributors (government employees) and voluntary contributors (common citizens) already know about it. But recently, some changes have beenproposed and It’s necessary to know how it will affect you. Until now, under the equity schemes, the maximum investment allowed was 50 per cent on a Nifty Index fund. That means the fund manager will put the money in Nifty and he has no say over individual stock choosing. Nifty is the indicative index of the National Stock Exchange. It has a kitty of the most actively traded large cap 50 stocks. Under the proposed
changes, the fund manager maybe allowed to invest up to five per cent collectively in real estate investment trust, infrastructure investment trust, and alsoin start-ups. And he may also beallowed up to three per cent investment in a single private equity. But experts are divided on these proposed changes. In the current structure, the fees paid to the fund managers is merely 0.01 per cent. But if a fund is actively managed, the fee structure is bound to go up. ButI personally believe that this will bring greater degree of flexibility and surely increase its performance. My friend and colleagueBhaskarJyotiBarua, also a certified financial planner, is of the opinion that it is a move in the right direction and will ultimately benefit the consumers. He also says that active fund management always surpluses the performance of any index fund, to which I also agree to a great degree. Raising the limit of equity investment beyond 50 per cent, as suggested by theBajpaicommittee,is also being discussed, to which both my friend and I have reservations. Another issue of allowing NPS in Initial Public Offer (IPO) is also being hotly debated. Everything said and done, we have to wait for another week or two to see the new guidelines appear from government’s side. As those who have invested have no option but to wait and see, those who are planning to, I ask them to wait for some time before making up their minds. But we all aspire for a good National Pension System, vibrant and well-oiled. After all retirement is a reality which none of us can escape.
I
Dr. P.S. Lorin, Principal
was born and brought up during the wave of the Naga National Movement.I have always wonderedif I wouldever see the matter being resolved. We Nagas have travelled thus far, and even after successive agreements and accords starting with the Nine Point Agreement in 1949 with India.Whenever these agreements are discussed Nagalandexperiences a rollercoaster of emotions of both hope and despair. The latest “Peace Accord” signed on 3rd August 2015 is a small step after 18 years of negotiation. One will hope that the final agreement will not take another 15 years. The fact that the Indian Prime Minister did not sign the Framework of Peace Agreement may have the bearing that the final settlement is yet to evolve. It is going to take some more time. While time and tide will not wait for the Nagas, we see that the world will keep changing and developing. Yet, with this sensational step, can we begin to hope that this is the right time for a final solution? India and the Nagashave not been able to see eye to eye for many years. Even now, the majority of mainland India continue to treat Nagas as foreigners and are even ignorant about our states location. For many of them, the Naga National issue is not a seriousmatter. A nation with a history of maharajas, kshatriyas and sudras, where the majority are from a different religionwill not be able to understand the aspiration of the Nagas without enough dialogue. Nagas often quote Mahatma Gandhi’s statement “I want you to feel that India is yours. I feel that the Naga Hills are mine just as they are yours … I believe in the brotherhood of man. I do not believe in forced union”. But India had only one Mahatma Gandhi and many did not feel the same or think along similar lines. Successive Indian Prime Ministers in the past have failed in solvingthe Naga National question. However, the fault for being unable to resolve the issue cannot be solely placed on India’s Prime Ministers and interlocutors. Our own Naga leaders might not have been experiencedenough in diplomacy and lacked the guidance and knowledge to bring about a negotiated settlement thatcould meet the expectations of our difficult-to-please Naga society. We Nagaswere in our own comfortable world and have looked at it from a Naga centric view. But for negotiations to work, it always requires some give and take, and we probably need to have a different perspective and put ourselves in the shoes of the other camp. With the signing of the Peace Agreement, the mood of Indians and Nagasare again hopeful and fearful in resolving this long standing conflict. This time there seems to be less opposition from our neighbours Assam, Manipur and Arunachal. Our fates are tied together and a Naga solution would be beneficial for all. There will be challenges in industrialising and makingthe region economically independent as long as there is armed conflict in the region. It is in the best interest of all to avoid promoting political and emotional slogans such as territorial integrity and hard-line opinions but rather view things with an open mind and look at an option that is mutually beneficial for all. The leaders have to lead the way in by promoting brotherhood and peaceful coexistence. We and our neighbours must be reconciliatory and accept the fact that we each have weaknesses. Can we hope for better days? The present ongoing consultation called by the NSCN (IM) is noteworthy. Stakeholders from all sections of society now need to step up and sensitise the masses. It is time we now realistically asked ourselves where we want Nagaland to be in the next five years and take concrete decisions to achieve that. Are we capable of creating our own world and taking advantage of the opportunities that being part of the global village provides or are we going to let things remain the same? There is a light at the end of the tunnel. The reality of a final solution is now at our door steps but it needs to be done right. There is a relationship of interdependence in the world today. Something that happens in China affects the economy of many countries and indirectly Nagaland as well. The core features in the Framework of Peace Agreement such as “shared sovereignty” and the “Pan Naga Hoho” between the two entity of India and Nagaland must consider the ground reality, and fulfil the aspiration of the Naga people. Nagas cannot remain inconclusive or indecisive but accept the ground reality. We cannot be too sensitive and self-centered and bogged down with a rigid one track mind. As professed publicly the final settlement must be honourable by recognizing the “unique history of the Nagas.” The Nagas at the same time should respect the unique history and culture of the Indians. Building peaceful co-existence and friendship must be rooted with the impending final settlement. What must be agreed on is the deadline for the final agreement to be signed and accomplished. We should not have to wait another 18 long years. We can only pray and hope that good sense will prevail and our leaders egos take a back seat, so that we can soon witnessa final settlement of the Naga National Movement. “Degree of Thought is a weekly community column initiated by Tetso College in partnership with The Morung Express. 'Modi govt has failed to match words with deeds' New Delhi, September 8 (iANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday mounted a frontal attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, terming his promises as nothing more than "hawabaazi"(hot air) and his government failing abysmally to match its words with deeds. Addressing the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting here, Sonia Gandhi accused Modi of "unedifying flip-flops" and lack of a coherent policy visa-vis Pakistan. She said the Modi government had chosen to disregard the will of parliament and "displayed an inexplicable hurry to snatch land from our farmers". She also accused the Modi government of being "controlled and directed" by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh. (RSS). Sonia called upon the party to institutionalise a mechanism to reward hard working workers and favoured affirmative action to give greater say to the marginalised sections in the party. Sonia Gandhi, who began her speech by referring to the "draconian land ordinance" of the Modi government, said the U-turn on the ordinance is evidence that the government is out of touch with ground realities. "It has become painfully clear that most of

the pledges made by the prime minister during his election campaign were nothing more than 'hawa baazi'. The Modi government has failed abysmally to match words with deeds, to match media events with actual accomplishments, to match headlines with substance," she said. Sonia Gandhi gave credit to party vice-president Rahul Gandhi for compelling the government to withdraw amendments on the land bill.
Indian clerics issue fatwa againt IS, declare it un-Islamic New Delhi, September 8 (iANS): Over 1,050 Indian Islamic scholars and clerics have issued fatwa against the Islamic State terror groand described its acts and actions as against the basic tenets of Islam. This is the first time that such a large number of religious leaders and Imams have issued a joint fatwa against Islamic State - also known as Daesh which has unleashed a reign of terror in the Middle East, killing thousands of innocent people. "Islam shuns violence while Daesh perpetuates it," the edict said. Abdul Rehman Anjari, president of the Mumbai's Islamic Defence Cyber Cell, collected the edicts from Muslims scholars and leaders over the past few months. These fatwas are in 15 volumes, and copies were sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and other leaders to convey Indian Muslims' views on IS activities. It urged the international community to take immediate steps to eliminate this terror group that has caused mayhem in the region and is spreading its tentacles in the South Asian region. The signatories to the fatwa include the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari, head priests of Dargah Ajmer Sharief and Nizamuddin Aulia, functionaries of Mumbai's Raza Academy, Mumbai's Jamait Ulema and the Ulema Council. Hundreds of imams and various religious leaders have also endorsed it. Anjari said muftis and imams of all sections and sects of Islam have condemned the activities of Daesh and acknowledged it has tarnished Islam's image. The fatwa was issued at a time when reports say that Daesh mercenaries are trying to lure Indian youth to join them.
Talks with India only if Kashmir discussed: Sartaj Aziz iSlAmAbAD, September 8 (iANS): National Security Advisor (NSA) Sartaj Aziz on Tuesday said Pakistan will hold talks with India only if the Kashmir issue is also on the agenda, the media reported. He said the earlier NSA-level talks with India were cancelled due to the inflexibility shown by India, as no dialogue with India can be successful without the Kashmir issue as part of the agenda, Dawn online reported. "(Indian Prime Minister) Narendra Modi contested elections on anti-Pakistan platform and now wants to dictate terms for the dialogue with Pakistan but we will never accept this and we have already conveyed it to New Delhi," Aziz said. The announcement came on the eve of a dialogue between the Director-General Pakistan Rangers and the Indian Border Security Force chief in New Delhi on Wednesday. He said the meeting is being held in accordance with the Ufa declaration and will help reduce tensions along the Line of Control and Pakistan will definitely raise the issue of 'unprovoked' Indian firing. He said Kashmir will be part and parcel of any agenda of talks with India and that the international community has accepted Pakistan’s point of view in this regard. Aziz said that no one could dare to launch any attack inside Pakistan and if anyone did so, he would get a befitting response. He said that Pakistan would not be pressured by Indian threats of an attack at any time, adding that if India even thought of attacking, Pakistan would provide a befitting response. The NSA also rubbished claims that Dawood Ibrahim was hiding in Pakistan. The advisor also announced that Pakistan would present a dossier on Indian interference in the country at the UN.
"Thanks to our party's sustained campaign, the government has been compelled to withdraw its anti-farmer amendments. The credit for this goes to every Congress worker who, under Rahul's active guidance, carried out a sustained agitation," she said. "Similar campaigns will now need to be mounted against the assault on tribal welfare, on women and child welfare, on labour laws, on laws that protect the environment and forests, on RTI
and on our flagship initiatives MGNREGA which are being systematically undermined," she added. Stating that the economy was on a downslide while prices "continue on their unrelenting rise," Sonia Gandhi said the government had little to show on its promises for creation of jobs and slogans such as "Make in India". She also accused the central government of systematically eroding the autonomy and integrity of vi-
tal institutions. "Writers and progressive thinkers are being physically eliminated. The media is being threatened with notices and other repressive measures," the Congress president said. "History is sought to be rewritten with special targeting of Jawaharlal Nehru, the architect of modern India and builder of democratic institutions. This should hardly come as a surprise to us," she said. Referring to last week's
New Delhi, September 8 (pti): The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday today took on Sonia Gandhi over her barbs at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying she was targeting him to hide her failures, and likened her praise for Rahul Gandhi over his stir against land ordinance with the case of a mother patting her son’s back for “usurping” farmers’ land, a reference to the recent Amethi land row. Seeking to turn the tables on Congress over its president’s ‘hawabaazi’ (empty talk) barb at Modi, Irani said the real ‘hawabaazi’ would be Mr. Gandhi declaring himself to be a messiah of farmers as she attacked the Congress vice president over the Amethi land row. “While guiding her decimated party, Sonia Gandhi today took the help of Modi’s name to hide the failures of her policies. She said nothing is happening on the ground. It is laughable that those who emptied the country’s treasury are attacking somebody who has been able to bring coordination meet between the RSS and the Bharatiya Janata Party, she said: "The country last week was given clear evidence of what has been obvious for a long time" that the Modi government is controlled and directed by the RSS, whose agenda is well known to all of us. She said the security situation in the country's neighbourhood has also deteriorated considerably. "Our jawans and civilians are being increas-
development on the ground,” Union Minister Smriti Irani said while referring to alleged scams under the UPA rule. Asked about reports that Congress was going slow on anointing Mr. Gandhi as its president, she told a press conference that Mr. Gandhi mattered little for the BJP and claimed that she had been able to reduce his victory margin in a big way in Amethi with only 20 days of campaigning. “Why is Congress not willing to make him its president is a question for it to answer, not BJP,” she said. The Congress president had today attacked Modi, saying he has been “reduced to unedifying flip flops” and most of his poll promises were nothing more than “hawabaazi” (empty talk). Responding to the attack on the Prime Minister, Irani said it was Congress which did “hawabaazi” for 40 years on the issue of One-Rank-One-Pension while Modi had fulfilled that promise in 18 months.
ingly targeted. Instead of a coherent policy on Pakistan, this government can't seem to make up its mind on what it should do. From aggressively mocking former prime minister Manmohan Singh and his policy during the election campaign, the prime minister has been reduced to unedifying flip-flops casting doubts on what he really stands for," she said. Sonia Gandhi said the block committees and booth committees should
be empowered and the party's priority should be to strengthen its existing support base while actively reaching out to new constituents. "A transparent mechanism to recognise and reward hard working and performing workers should be institutionalised." The CWC, the party's highest decision-making body, discussed the present political situation in the country and organisational issues.
Swiss government discloses new name in India's black money probe berNe, September 8 (pti) O In a fresh disclosure on suspected black money cases being probed by tax authorities in India, Switzerland on Tuesday said it has received request for information about Indore-based textiles firm Neo Corp International Ltd. Neo Corp, which began as a small woven sack maker in 1985 and now claims to be a multinational technical textiles group, had incidentally faced income tax searches on its various premises earlier in February for alleged tax evasion. As part of its bilateral treaty for administrative assistance and exchange of information with
Switzerland, India has sought details about numerous individuals and companies from the Alpine nation as part of its crackdown against suspected black money stashed in Swiss banks. Neo Corp is the latest in a series of Indian names that have been published in the official gazette of the Swiss government about whom the tax authorities in India have sought information from their counterparts of Switzerland. About a dozen such names have been disclosed so far, while many other requests are pending with the Swiss authorities who conduct their own due diligence
before starting the process of sharing the information. The notification about the concerned entity's right to appeal is generally the first step in the information exchange process. This is typically seen as the Swiss government in-principle agreeing to share the information. As per the notification published on Tuesday, Neo Corp will have 30 days' time to appeal against "administrative assistance" by the Swiss federal tax administration as per their local laws. The appeal needs to be filed before the Swiss federal administrative court, while giving reasons and
evidence for the same, the notification said, without disclosing further details about the case and the company, except for its date of incorporation — February 15, 1985. There was no response to queries about the latest Swiss action despite repeated calls to its office in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. However, Neo Corp had said in a regulatory filing to the BSE earlier in May that it was cooperating with the tax authorities. It had said at that time that a search was conducted on February 27, 2015 on the company, its group companies, directors and key officials. "The company is in the process
of collating and responding to all the queries raised by the income tax authorities and the company is lending its fullest co-operation to the department in completing the enquiry. It is to put on record that no incriminate documents and/or undisclosed income was found as far as Neo Corp and its group companies are concerned," it said in the BSE filing on May 22. Neo Corp is listed on the BSE but its shares have been falling sharply for the past few days. Claiming to be present in over 28 countries, it commands a market value of Rs 134 crore. It posted revenue of Rs 744 crore and net profit of Rs 30 crore in the latest fiscal.
Indian skilled workers' wages Babus may lose job for overone of lowest in Asia-Pacific staying on foreign assignments
New Delhi, September 8 (iANS): At an average monthly pay of $400, salaries of Indian fresher graduates rank ninth out of the top 11 economies in the Asia-Pacific region, a study said on Tuesday. Further, it is less than onefifth of equivalent salaries in South Korea and Singapore. Only Philippines and Indonesia trail behind India in regard to a fresher's monthly income. According to the findings of Towers Watson, a global professional services company, further up the career ladder, Indian wages for experienced professionals at the middle management level are slightly more competitive. The finding said an en-
gineering manager in India earns an annual salary of $56,530 that is almost half of his counterpart in China who earns $112,070 and is just onethird of his counterpart in Singapore where the annual guaranteed pay is $151,168. While an office service manager in India annually earns $39,266, it is nearly double in China at $77,630 with the remuneration in Singapore at $119,598. Entrants in IT programming and quality control roles earn $5,345 in India while a person having the same portfolio in China earns $7,549. The same payment in Singapore is five-fold at $25,755 while in US, it is $40,610. "Despite a common la-
bour market in the region, it is striking to see how divergent guaranteed cash levels remain amongst top economies," Tower Watson's data services practice leader, Asia-Pacific region, Sambhav Rakyan said in a statement. With Indian salaries featuring nearly at the bottom of the pyramid, Rakyan said it presents an opportunity for India. "The disparity in salaries also illustrates how a large knowledge pool and a significant cost arbitrage makes India a front runner in providing outsourced services. After achieving great success in IT/BPO, India can now become a natural choice for other sectors, like manufacturing," he said.
New Delhi, September 8 (pti): IAS and IPS officers may lose their job if they overstay on foreign assignments for more than a month without permission, as per the new rules being finalised by the government. The move comes after it came to the notice that some bureaucrats were not reporting back to India after completion of their foreign postings. Few of them were also proceeding on unauthorised leave soon after completing their tenure abroad. If an officer of all India service--Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFoS), remains unauthorisedly absent after the sanctioned period of leave, study leave or tenure of foreign assignment, there shall be a one month waiting period, as per the draft rules. After that, the state government
concerned under whose cadre the officer hails from, shall issue a show cause notice, thereby giving him an opportunity to explain his case. Thereafter, if the officer does not return to duty, the state government concerned shall initiate proceedings of deemed resignation and forward a proposal to the Centre for effecting it within next 2 months, it said. In case the state government fails to comply with these instructions, the central government shall initiate proceedings of deemed resignation on its own, the draft rules formed by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said. As per existing rules, no officer of the 3 all India services shall be granted leave of any kind for a continuous period exceeding five years. The DoPT has sent the new draft rules for comments to chief secretaries of state governments and union territories.
"Banistan": Four-day meat ban in Mumbai sparks outrage mUmbAi, September 8 (reUterS): Mumbai, India's financial capital, has banned the slaughter and sale of meat for four days this month following a demand from the strictly vegetarian Jain community, sparking outrage among meat-eaters already upset by a permanent beef ban imposed this year. Ban opponents created the Twitter hashtag #banistan, which trended along with #meatban, urging people to "eat and let eat". Members of the tiny, but financially powerful, Jain community will observe a religious fast for eight days from Friday. Officials said they demanded the ban as their religion prescribes non-violence to all living beings. The ban in Mumbai will be imposed on four
non-consecutive days from Thursday, said Kaleem Pathan, deputy general manager of the city's Deonar abattoir. It covers the slaughter of buffaloes, goats and hogs, but excludes fish and poultry. It is not unusual for authorities to impose meatfree days and ban alcohol on India's national days, but the latest strictures angered many who said religious groups should not impose their preferences on an entire city. "The Jains are entitled to their own beliefs and can peacefully follow what they believe in," said Mumbai resident Lavanya Chhabra, who runs a firm making air fresheners for cars. "But they should not be in any way involved in imposing a ban that affects others."
Mohammed Ali Qureshi, president of industry body the Bombay Suburban Beef Dealers' Association, said, "Jains do not eat onions and garlic as well, so tomorrow is the government going to ban those items also?" The community forms just 2 percent of the population in Maharashtra, where Mumbai is located, Qureshi said, adding, "This is clearly not the right thing to do." India is home to 300 million cattle and is the world's largest beef exporter and fifth-biggest consumer. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power last year, the rhetoric on the protection of cows, which Hindus consider holy, has increased. WAShINGtON, September 8 (IANS): Even as a special intelligence review revealed that some emails on Hillary Clinton’s personal account contained highly classified information, the Democratic frontrunner declined to apologise for the controversy saying what she did was allowed. The review endorsed a finding by the inspector general for the intelligence agencies that a couple of emails contained highly classified information when Clinton received them while working as secretary of state, the New York Times reported citing senior intelligence officials. Clinton’s presidential campaign disagreed with the conclusion of the intelligence review and suggested that agencies within the government often have different views of what should be considered classified, the Times said. The intelligence review added more fuel to the controversy surrounding Clinton’s use of only a private email account for official business that has pulled down her poll numbers in key states and raised questions about her trustworthiness. Clinton has said that her emails contained no information that was marked classified and that she is fully cooperating with an FBI investigation into how classified materials were handled on her personal email account. Campaigning in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Clinton insisted in an interview with AP that she doesn’t need to apologise for her nagging email controversy because “what I did was allowed.” “(The email controversy) hasn’t in any way affected the plan for our campaign, the efforts we’re making to organize here in Iowa and elsewhere in the country,” Clinton said. “And I still feel very confident about the organization and the message that my campaign is putting out.” Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina Monday accused Clinton of lying on the email controversy and predicted that the Democrat would soon will renew gender-based attacks on Republicans. “The truth is Clinton has lied as secretary of state about Benghazi, about her emails, about her server,” Fiorina said on Fox News. “And so when she revives this ‘war on women’ -- and make no mistake she will -- this is her go-to line.” “First of all, boo hoo, Clinton,” former HP CEO said when asked about Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Bernie Sanders’ rise in the polls and talk of her reviving the “war on women” attack on Republicans. She also asked why Republican frontrunner Donald Trump is not training more of his attacks on Clinton, “I actually wish Mr. Trump would throw a little more heat Hillary Clinton’s way,” said Fiorina who has gained a strong footing in the Republican field since the first presidential debate though she is still trailing Trump and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Meanwhile, adding to Clinton’s headaches were stronger signals that Vice President Joe Biden may join the presidential race. On a Labour Day trip to Pittsburgh, Biden, 72, deflected questions about whether he would indeed jump into the race to challenge Clinton and Sanders for the Democratic nomination. But, according to a CNN report Biden later gently teased a group of steelworkers, saying the press would portray his visit to Pittsburgh as a sign he was “competing with Bernie Sanders, who is doing a helluva job by the way.” When a man yelled out he should run for the White House, Biden replied: “You gotta talk to my wife about that.” Small groups of Sanders supporters held up home made signs and watched Biden pass, CNN said. But there was no evidence of Clinton backers in the crowd.
China party fears most a crisis over corruption beIJING, September 8 (reuterS): What China’s Communist Party fears most is a crisis over corruption which would threaten its hold on power, but it is confident people will stand by its efforts to combat the problem, a senior official said on Tuesday. President Xi Jinping has launched a sweeping campaign against graft since assuming the party leadership in 2012 and presidency in 2013, warning, like others before him, that the problem is so severe it could affect the party’s grip on power. In unusually frank comments before a group of mostly Chinese and Western academics and smattering of diplomats, Wang Jiarui, head of the party’s international department, said being in power as long as the party had, since 1949, had bred a corruption problem. “Under such circumstances, certain people will naturally be spurned and kicked out, but if there are many such officials it will cause a crisis for the ruling party, though we’ve obviously not reached that stage,” Wang said. “But what we are most concerned about and most worried about is precisely this problem,” he added. Unlike in a democracy, China has no opposition party to take over from the communists should they falter, though the party is confident it can root out its bad elements and has so far been very effective, Wang said. “Our party has our party discipline, our philosophy and our rules. We will not lose our people, and the people will embrace us,” he added. The situation in fighting corruption “remains very serious”, Wang said. The Communist Party is keenly aware one of the reasons its predecessor in China, the Nationalists, lost the Chizese civil war in 1949 was because of the terrible corruption under their rule, costing them public support. However, the Communist Party has repeatedly refused to allow the establishment of an independent body to fight corruption, insisting it can govern itself via the graft-busting Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. The fight has been hampered to an extent by difficulty in getting suspected corrupt officials and assets back from overseas. Western countries have baulked at signing extradition deals with China, partly out of concern about the integrity of its judicial system and treatment of prisoners. Wang did not directly address that issue, saying instead he hoped people at the conference - opened to foreign media for the first time - would get a better understanding of the party’s graft fighting efforts first hand. “We really want to hear what you think we should be doing, and we’re willing to listen to your criticisms, as long as they are well-intentioned.”
Suu Kyi for free and fair Myanmar elections YANGON, September 8 (reuterS): Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi kicked off campaigning for the first free general election since the end of military rule saying it would be a crucial turning point and called on the global community to monitor the outcome. In a video message posted on her National League for Democracy’s (NLD) Facebook page, Suu Kyi said the Nov. 8 election should be free and fair, but “even more important” would be the transition period that follows. The NLD is expected to win the election, which marks a major shift in Myanmar’s political landscape, giving the platform to democratic activists shut out of public life during nearly half a century of strict military rule that ended in 2011. The NLD won general elections in 1990 in a landslide, but the junta did not recognise the result. “For the first time in decades, our people will have a real chance of bringing about real change. This is a chance that we cannot afford to let slip,” said Suu Kyi. “A smooth and tranquil transition is almost more important than a free and fair election,” said Suu Kyi, wearing a traditional Burmese green dress with a pink scarf. major presidential contender and opponent of President Thein Sein, powerful parliamentary speaker Shwe Mann, was removed as ruling party leader in a dramatic shakeup of the political establishment. Shwe Mann’s close relationship with Suu Kyi was regarded with suspicion by the military. Thein Sein’s move has stoked fears that his government and its allies will resist any bid to push them from power even if the opposition wins big. “Please help us by observing what happens before the elections, during the elections, and, crucially, after the elections,” Suu
Kyi said. The Nobel laureate will meet her supporters on Thursday in the eastern Kayah region where powerful Minister of the President’s Office Soe Thein, the architect of Thein Sein’s economic reforms, is running for a seat in the election. Her appearance is a gesture of confidence that the NLD can defeat the president’s closest supporters and their ruling, army-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). The ballot will determine representatives of the bicameral parliament and regional chambers for fiveyear terms.

The upper and lower houses will both nominate a presidential candidate, who must secure the support of a majority of members, and the military - which under the juntadrafted constitution holds a quarter of the seats - will nominate a third. Parliament will then vote on which of the three candidates will be president and the president will form the government. “It’s really the president and the president’s administration, rather than the biggest party in parliament, that determines what hap-
fectively bars Suu Kyi from becoming president, even if the NLD wins a majority, and it also gives the army a veto over constitutional change. The NLD’s power in parliament will depend on whether it has enough members to nominate a presidential candidate on its own. With few credible opinion polls in the impoverished country, that is unclear. The USDP, which is dominated by military and civil servants who retired to become candidates, will be the NLD’s biggest opponent. Suu Kyi was under house arrest at the time of 2010 vote and her party did not take part, but she was released six days later. The NLD agreed to join the quasi-civilian system in 2012 and later won 43 seats in parliament in by-elections. Suu Kyi is standing in the constituency of Kawhmu, a southern delta town outside the biggest city, Yangon.

Rani Gaidinliu, Heraka & the Divine revelation through Naga Shisha Hoho politics of religion – Part 1
R
Dr. Vetso Koza
ani Gaidinliu is for many people a synonymous figure with Heraka religion. We have failed to make a clear distinction between Rani Gaidinliu as a person and Heraka as religion. We tend to read the life and work of Rani Gaidinliu through the lens of Heraka religion as we seemingly know. We look at Heraka with the preconceived notion that Rani Gaidinliu was a blood-drinker, sacrificed human-being, and was an invisible magical woman. We are unable to establish any objective evidence till today. All we have is the record mentioning that she possesses some kind of divination gift. And who started all these allegations and defamation? It was mostly the first Christian converts. I do not subscribe to the belief and religious practices of Rani Gaidinliu. I have reservation even to spell out her name. But the more I dig deeper into her life and works, I am impressed by this mystic woman. The passion she carried for her people, the vision she had, the strategies and courage this ‘teenage girl’ developed to accomplish her passion and vision cannot be simply ignored. The methodology of using religion as the framework to establish the socio-culturalpolitical identity may be of interest to reflect. When we pluck out all the preconceptions against Rani Gaidinliu and the cultic religious elements she is associated with, we see one thing. Rani Gaidinliu utilized religion as a tool to set-up the socio-cultural-political identity of the people. Perhaps she understood that our Naga indigenous identity is deeply rooted in our religion? “Hera” referring to almighty god and “Ka” meaning pure, was a reformed indigenous religion whose main ideology was to protect and preserve socio-cultural-political-religious identity of the people. Therefore, against the common misconception, Rani Gaidinliu’s movement was never limited to religious liberation. Hers was very much a political fight coated in religious flavour and ignited by the “Naga Raj” movement of Jadonang. “The Naga Raj” movement precedes the NNC movement and the two occurred at uniquely different times. As a matter of fact, it may be a point of interest to scholars, and research whether this NNC movement, which later became the backbone of our Naga Political fight was either directly or indirectly impacted, in any way, if any, by the “Naga Raj” or Rani Gaidinliu’s Movement? Akin to NNC, Rani Gaidinliu’s Movement was a fight against any foreign invasions that would destroy the very socio-cultural-political fabric of
the indigenous people. She saw the British invasion and Christianity which came along with the British incursion and was then considered a foreign religion, as the biggest threat to the identity of the people. Unfortunately, her political-religious fight could not do much when Nagas started to embrace Christianity because the power of the living God was too much to resist. Nonetheless, her fear came true. At one point of time, we Nagas have discarded almost all of our cultural artefacts when we renounced our indigenous faith and embraced Christianity. We took the Roman script, started using English as the common communication medium; discarded our traditional dress and got fascinated with western fashion. We have almost renounced our folk songs which are not simply songs but an instrument of worship, medium of communication, story narration, recording and recounting our history. We were threatened not so much from without but from within. We have fought bravely on the battlefields, handled jungle wars and rough mountainous terrains as a child would play in a football ground, banged the table with raw fists before the mighty Indians, but became a vulnerable group of people when we realised our socio-cultural ingredients have almost gone with the change of religion. The intensity of this threat was so strong that we became insecured, and each tribe began to draw our tribal lines with thicker walls, which in turn made us more withdrawn thinning the space for other community to join our fellowship. Some of us are arguing that the Museum of Rani Gaidinliu should not be here in Kohima because she was not from Nagaland. Could this be a subtle indication of the sense of insecurity that is in us? On a lighter zest, perhaps our craziness of putting all sorts of designated name plates in our vehicle and announcing our presence may be a faint implication to this fear of losing one’s identity? Today we are a confused group of people. Our conscience tells us to move forward with Christian values and practices, yet our instinct pull us to the primitive lifestyle. We have started our Christian journey long ago but are still romantic about our native practices. That is why we want to go to church and at the same time have rice beer in a bamboo cup. We come to the church to receive blessings and at the same time, ask the eldest of the village to pronounce some sort of indigenous spiritual blessings whenever there are community gatherings or festivals. We want to stand firm in our Christian faith but cannot resist the myth and superstitions. We accuse Rani Gaidinliu of practising
witchcraft, and we are still fascinated by sorcerous elements painted in Christian colour. We are neither here nor there. We are so conscious of re-establishing our identity that we have recently started reviving our cultural artefacts, revitalizing the indigenous festivities, rewriting our folk songs to be sung in the church services and community gatherings, busy developing our tribal scripts and the best we can do is print Bibles and hymnals to be used in the church because there is limited platform to apply it. And as though this is not enough, in the name of our Christian faith churches are breaking apart on ethnic line. All for what? “Identity.” Today, we are re-working this quest for identity by wearing Christian coat. The irony is, what we are doing now was what Rani Gaidinliu was passionate about. In a way, she foresaw that such a day like this would come to the Nagas. The only two differences I can see are, Rani Gaidinliu used Heraka as the medium and we are using Christianity; and one was done in a primitive time and the other in a post-modern era. The vacuum of leaving out religion in the process of our political fight for identity was always felt from the beginning until now. Today many of us are sarcastic of the word, “Nagaland for Christ.” I do not see anything wrong when our then faithful freedom fighters pledged to put religious ingredients in their political struggle. They understood perfectly that our historical identity is connected to a Being greater than us. And the Rainbow image that is inscribed in our National flag has a spiritual implication to remind us of that pledge. In all these, religion was fundamental in the fight for identity. Indeed, religion is undeniably the element that is intrinsically connected to social, cultural and political life of the people. Thus, I see the objective of the fight is same in all the cases; the difference is in the methodology to attain the objective. The fight for identity to unite the Nagas is also the very agent that is disintegrating the Nagas. Nagas are known for our bravery and likewise we are arrogant group of people – from the illiterate to the so called intellectuals. Paradoxically, we have become very insecured over the time. Our prejudice occupies every bit of spaces in us that we hardly have any places left for other tribe or community to be part of us. Is this the best we can bring out from the Christian faith we have embraced? We are passionate about the identity from without but confused on the identity from within. How would we reconcile our Christian faith and our indigenous identity? Perhaps, this is the politics of mission we need to be working upon at this juncture.
The TruTh of rani Gaidinliu
E
xpounding the reality of Rani Gaidinliu, for public information is considered a necessity to the Nagas. Much rejections of her have been reflected through Medias by various groups; Church based organizations, theologians and individuals making her the hottest current news of the day. It implies that, Nagas are revealing themselves of their political status, morale standard and social character telling the world of who Nagas are. Viewing from the Zeliangrong tribal perspective, the present Naga scenario is more of superficiality than reality, more of self denying than self-determining, more of speculative than pragmatic. The fact rings an alarming bell for Nagas to wakeup in order to march ahead. The Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland responsibly felt the need to clear the airs, and cure the ailments of the Naga society as any other Naga tribes should responsibly act toward restoring the defacing and defaming Naga images done by many irresponsible leaders and writers reflecting their destructive oriented mentality through medias. It is painful and sentimentally hurtful to see many unfounded allegations meted against the Naga freedom fighter whom India recognized her as a Naga lady fighter and accorded with highest admiration as a Rani from the Naga Hills. The Naga History have been illuminated, respected and placed in high esteemed shaping and creating conducive environment for peaceful and positive Indo-Naga talk. The GoI cannot deny the Naga history and the historical situation made so far. That the long Naga struggle for independent from British and later on India stands distinct and unique because of the fact that, despite the bestial animistic Naga nature as the Indian thought to be, the Nagas have displayed and asserted their indomitable and inherent human right to self- determination by and in the person of the Rani Gaidinliu. Her influence and contribution to the Naga cause and even the creation of Nagaland have not been sensed and credited. Instead many Nagas still feel alienated to her, discrediting only to their political disadvantage. It is high time Nagas take a new turn and reflect a high political outlook pacing with the drum beat of the current political mo-
mentum to the third millennium generation. After exercising tolerance and patient silence over the sectional Naga political leaders, surfacing Rani Gaidinliu as tools to destabilize Naga unity, and create confusion within the Naga family at the juncture when Naga society and political progress is taking positive turns. The Zeliangrong Naga felt necessary to correct misinterpretations about Rani Gaidinliu by certain unscrupulous critics. The following points may be considered to clear the Nagas’ minds from further confusions :1. Rani Gaidinliu was a rare and lone Naga lady freedom fighter whose eccentric and charismatic leadership personality have been admired in wonderment by her people and the people of India leading the Nagas to be recognized as one distinct people having their strong sense of sovereign will power. Her leadership performance and contribution cannot be questioned. History speaks loud and clear. 2. Rani Gaidinliu was never an anti Naga and anti-Christian in any manner all her movement. When the armed force of NNC of Zeliangrong region was used by jealous Christian converts to suppress her political ideology that is Naga Raj Movement against British Raj she opted to defend, protect and preserve her movement up to her last. NNC offensive operation attack was retaliated by her defensive confrontation that has caused the unfortunate casualty on the side of NNC. The fact should not be taken for granted that she was anti-Naga nationalism. Plethora of proofs can be substantiated. 3. Branding her as anti-Christ, tantric witch, black magic, blood thirsty lady and what not, that T. Solo has projected and coined that has provoked and annoyed even the Church based leaders, theologians, tribal organizations, bureaucrats to jump and dance in his magical tune and spell. His unchristian attitude toward the Naga indigenous Heraka faith is clearly seen as anti-Naga, and anti Christian that Naga Christian must beware of such a man in sheep skin woven with subtle magical words. Nagas must no longer be fooled by

such a man who has misled, defamed and belittled the image of general Nagas. Heraka is never an anti-Christian as Naga Christians leaders have been troubled and feared by misgiving media coverage. Heraka is a reformed faith denouncing all that are negative rituals, superstitions and all that contradicts to the modern Naga culture. This faith does not oppose the Christian but when Christian converts opposed them, they also defended and seek out for firm support from secular India that practice interfaith understanding and tolerance. How could Christians be so cruel to oppose Heraka? What logic is making a sense when Naga Christians are blaming them of opposing Christianity? Are matured Christian suppose to do such measures against others faith? Today Christians shall be held responsible for losing the originality of the history of Nagas. The title “Rani” given to Gaidinliu is opposed with great resentment. If Gaidinliu was one of the Naga tribes from Nagaland by birth, what would be the situation? Queenship or kingship was not practiced or realized in the Naga society when in the age of isolation. Now even Nagas are using Beauty Queen contest. Queen does not necessarily mean she has to have a king. Queen in the Indian and world context is given to a high or brave, beautiful lady prominent in the society. It is needless and absurd to question her title. Rani Gaidinliu library cum memorial museum at the state capital is being opposed as if the structure is affecting the Nagas or to the particular Angamis. Humane logic speaks loud that such a project in the state capital is the pride and privilege of the Nagas as much as it would be if Phizo’s statue or memorial hall is granted to establish in Assam or Manipur or elsewhere in the world. Opposing such is mad minded attitude. What a loss and shame for the whole Nagas if the said Museum is taken back to others’ land? The notion that, BJP-RSS leaders get the chance to enter the Naga society through the Heraka cult is amounting to chal-
lenging the Heraka faiths and Hinduism. Such a resentful and jealous motive is destroying the social fiber of harmony and inciting religious contention. Provoking that, “the ultimate honorable identity of the Rongmei is in the casteless society of the Nagas with Christianity” stated by T. Solo is not only insulting but condemning the tribe. Assuming that the particularized Rongmei of Zeliangrong are getting facilities and privileges from India is greed based motive which is provocative and is a challenge to the tribe demanding a response. 8. Enough must be enough of implicating the tribe giving much undue branding. The Zeliangrong people will not remain in silence but face when such challenge and belittling implication is reflecting again and again through Medias. 9. The Questions relating to Rani Gaidinliu as constantly posed are illogical and baseless. Implying that she is not a Naga of Nagaland is simply devoid of logical politic. It is a divisive and crafty politic sorrowful to be mentioned to have originated from some few section of the Nagas of Nagaland. Differentiating the Nagas by state arbitrary boundary is very low and succumbing politic played by the Nagas even to this day. This destructive policy will have far flung impacts on the Nagas. Therefore stop it to end it. 10. Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland is keeping a vigilant watch on those who are reflecting many misgiving reports and malicious information through Media with dubious intent to instigate and provoke the general public. Such misgiven leaders even among some few Zeliangrong who are playing to the tune of some unscrupulous individuals are warned and shall be dealt with as per the laws of the land. Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland, appeals to all the Nagas to exercise and promote political integrity, religious tolerance & harmony, human rights, and the common political rights of the Nagas as a people. Let us shift our mental status and political progress to higher platform with the rest of the people of the world. Media cell Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland
1. The recently signed Framework Agreement will not lead to peace, but will lead to bloodshed. This bloodshed will start in Nagaland and will flow into India. God is all powerful. A larger force may try to swallow a smaller force, but, instead, God will swallow the larger force. 2. Shillong Accord was meant to bring peace, but it became a stumbling block for the Nagas. Today, the Framework Agreement is being called as the Peace Accord, but this is not the Peace Accord. If Nagas accept this, God’s judgment will fall upon the Nagas. 3. If Nagas accept this Framework, God will cut down the big trees and the Oak trees (meaning big leaders) of the Nagas. 4. God’s eyes are always upon the Nagas, but the Naga people have gone mad. God is pure and for this reason, God is urging the Nagas to stand in the name of God and to follow Him. 5. The name of Jesus is written on the right hand of the Nagas, and based on this the slogan “Nagaland for Christ” was given. Heaven, Earth and Peace was also given to the Nagas as a symbol of a covenant in the form of the Rainbow. If these two symbols – Nagaland for Christ and the Rainbow – are given into the hands of ‘idol worshippers,’ than God’s judgement will fall upon the Nagas. 6. The Naga people have reached the final stage of their journey. This significance was revealed. During this final stage of the journey, the road is crowded with people pushing each other and they reached the final destination. At this moment, a hand appeared and wrote
a word upon all those who stood for the Naga nation and for the Church of God. This group of people represents the 10 tithes of the Naga population and they will be the foundation of the Naga nation. 7. The case of the Naga people is not one that can be solved halfway. The final fate of the Nagas is in the hands of God. Two angels and the prophets are standing on the right side of the Nagas and along with them the Naga case will be finally solved. Symbol God put two tables in a room. One table was old and the other was new. The old table was covered by a piece of cloth. The new table, which was made off from two different kinds of wood was placed upon the Ark of the Covenant. A man suddenly appeared and stood on top of the new table when it was placed upon the Ark. No one appeared to touch it, but the new table fell off from the Ark by itself and broke into pieces. The splintered pieces fell far apart from one another and could not be pieced together again. At this time, God said that just like the new table, those who disobey the word of God will be blown away by His breath. After the new table was broken into pieces and blown away, God took the old table and placed it upon the Ark of the Covenant. The number ‘3’ (representing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) was sealed on the old table. The old table represents the NNC Plebiscite of 1951 and is the table of Naga Sovereignty. The role of Youth in escalating Peace in nagaland
M
odern world is becoming smaller, highly integrated and highly advancement in technology. At this hour our state is becoming more unsecure through an environment full of tension, violence, injustice, reduced in tolerance among each other and disrespect to human rights. This has led to fragmentation, less peaceful and insecurity to both the past and the present generation. At this hour our people needs a culture of peace and conflict free environment within our state and this is the area where the youths can play a vital role in escalating peace in our state particularly. One core value or principle we should have in promoting peace is “BE THE CHANGE”. This can change the attitude of the person which involve the tradition and believes in having a positive life. Youths can also be the foundation of peace and tranquillity in our state. Our threat of violence and conflict had always been killing our peace of mind, creates mental trauma, happiness and our wishes to live with freedom. The youth are always considered to be the future with a revolution towards conflicts as we bring out new ideas and the energy to add the pool of knowledge that currently exists. Even though we can’t be the driver towards change, yet we have a major role to play in
bringing a change starting from ourselves through little ways we can. We the youth should equally understand our leadership capacity by educating ourselves on the need of the community or society and take opportunities available to prioritise leadership development programmes especially with those in the rural areas, because lack of knowledge in decision making leads to conflict from the initial point. The youths shall be the network of change which involves in the ethnic development; the youth of different Naga tribes can come together and share their common problems, share culture and traditions and eradicate tribalism which is then transmitting from generation to generation. The youth on the political area of development can engage or join in political awareness building in their areas, find and demand accountability, transparency and citizenry participation from the bureaucrats. We may end justifying the bureaucrats that they are also corrupted politically but we should also remember that every flower does not have thorn. In addition, the youth shall learn new skills to deal with conflict i.e. through non violence. Now the question is what is our contribution towards promoting peace??? Shanjos E. JERUSALEM: THE MOTHER OF US ALL
O
ur feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem, Jerusalem is builded as a big city that is compact together. PS: 122:2.3 . I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem coming down from God, out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Rev 21:2. There are certain place-names which unroll immediately before us the living pageant of history. Such a word, for example, is Athens. You have to mention Athens to set men dreaming of the glory that was Greece, of the deadless achievements of the Hellenic spirit in the realms of beauty, culture, romance and the miraculous forward thrust which the Greek mind gave to the slow evolution of man’s dignity of the soul. Such a word, again Rome, its majesty of law, government, the drive and the dynamic genius of ordered law and rule which welded together for enduring unity. What souls of morality legions, of laden caravans, of commerce rolling in from all the ends of the earth, of the felling of forest and the cutting of the great roods, of trumpets and battle songs and the praise of the famous men, lie in one word Rome. But there is another name which across the centuries has struck deeper chords and awakened stronger emotions in the human breast than either Athens or Rome: and that is Jerusalem. Let us remember the names of those men and women, the aspirations of a host of nameless saints, memories that gather in from family altars where our own fathers in God have prayed, the thoughts that often lie too deep for tears. We may never have left the town or hamlet of our birth, nor stirred beyond our natives shores, and yet most surely our feet have stood within the gates of Jerusalem. Here is our citizenship, here our spiritual home; and of Zion it shall be said ‘This man was born in her’.
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept- when we remember Zion. How could we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land. Consider for a moment what Jerusalem meant to the Jew himself. It stood, first for history; Jerusalem to the Hebrew mind, meant David, the shepherd-king, the man after God’s own heart, and Solomon in all his glory the builder of temples. Jerusalem means the temple, and the temple meant God and like a spiritual magnet a Jew might roam around the world but we accept continually how King David in Babylon knelt to say his prayers, the window of his rooms was open towards Jerusalem. Jerusalem, to the Hebrew mind, means religion- all singing the songs of Zion, all praying for the peace of Jerusalem. History, religion, home- all those for the Hebrew mind were gathered up into the name Jerusalem. You will remember that there were just two places in the Gospels where the evangelists tell us that Jesus wept. Once, it was at the grave of His friend Lazarus and once when coming round the shoulder of the Mount of Olives. He saw the city of David spread out before him in the sunshine and stood gazing at it with eyes dimmed with a sudden mist of tears. We too have walked on those streets where in ancient time the feet of Jesus went….we have dreamt those dreams and sing those songs of Zion, and inscribed our names in the burgess roll of her free citizens, and have seen the sun flaming down behind the battlements and ramparts of the city of God. Paul was speaking for you and me no less than for his own contemporaries when, in his letter to the Galatians, he flung out the magnificent sentences. “Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all”. sing the canvas of Bollywood to highlight the stench of garbage in the national capital, an art campaign - “The Dirty Pictures” - was launched here on Tuesday. Pick any of your favourite moments of Bollywood - be it the romantic scene by late stars Raj Kapoor and Nargis in the pouring rain under a black umbrella or actors Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol serenading on “Suraj hua madham”-- and replace the background by a garbage disposal site. That's what the campaign aims to do as the art project aims to create awareness about recycling using a poster campaign. The posters will be placed across 54 garbage disposal sites in and around South Delhi, and around 30 sites have already been covered. Karma Recycling, a buy-back operator of mobile devices and Delhi, I Love You, a social endeavour, in collaboration with artist Shaily Gupta have brought the campaign alive, said a statement. Designed by Gupta, the images remind of the garbage disposal crises, as well as presents a take on the issue in a humorous way. The idea is to draw attention to the waste management debate by using iconic Bollywood imagery and subtly introducing rotting garbage into the dreamy Bollywood utopia.

Speaking to Jimmy Choo, she said: ''Comfort is definitely the common denominator, which means a lot of pieces that are flowy and light. I've always been attracted to the '70s -- sexy, with a lot of freedom in the overall aesthetic. ''My fashion icons are Julie Christie, Anita Pallenberg, Kate Moss and Cher.'' n a short span of time, Sooraj Pancholi, who makes his debut with Hero, has garnered an impressive fan following. What's also commendable is that his popularity extends across various social media platforms. From writing and blogging about him to posting his images, netizens are supporting the young actor in every possible way. Even during his inter-city tours for the promotion of this Nikhil Advani-directed film, fans have been turning up in big numbers to show their support for him. While he agrees that all this is extremely overwhelming, Sooraj concedes that this popularity and fanfare has also put some pressure on him. That's all the more reason for him to put in more effort and stand true to the expectations of his followers. "It's very humbling when you're welcomed with open arms, especially when you have just begun your career," he sums up. Hero, produced by Salman Khan Films and Mukta Arts, and released worldwide by Eros International, opens in cinemas on September 11.

Halep, Victoria Azarenka Anderson stuns Murray, Simona clash in US Open quarterfinals Federer into quarters
C M Y K
NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 8 (REUTERS): Persistence finally paid off for Kevin Anderson as the towering South African prevailed in a slugfest with Andy Murray to reach the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open on Monday while another tennis giant John Isner was slain by Roger Federer. Two David v Goliath matchups, however, ended all too predictably as 97th ranked British qualifier Johanna Konta saw her Flushing Meadows joy ride ended 7-5 6-3 by fifth seeded Czech Petra Kvitova and 68th ranked American Donald Young ran out of comeback magic in a 6-4 1-6 6-3 6-4 loss to fifth seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland. Tomas Berdych's time in Flushing Meadows also came to an end with the sixth seeded Czech falling 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-1 to 12th seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Seven times before the six-foot, eight-inch (2.03m) Anderson had progressed to the fourth round of a grand slam but never beyond until his 7-6(5) 6-3 6-7(2) 7-6(0) victory over third seeded Scot Murray. Murray had battled his way back from two sets down in the second round against France's Adrian Mannarino, but could not work another miracle against the 14th-ranked, 29-year-old, who swept the final tiebreak 7-0. Second seed Federer also came face-to-face
with one of the ATP Tour's biggest hitters and coolly defused six-foot, 10-inch (2.08m) Isner's booming serve to claim a 7-6(0) 7-6(6) 7-5 victory. Federer held his own from the service line to thwart Isner, never losing his serve, and used his returning skills to derail a pair of long streaks enjoyed by the American. The 34-year-old Federer closed out the two hour, 39 minute fourth-round match by breaking Isner's serve, ending the American's string of 108 consecutive service holds at the U.S. Open. His perfect scoreline in the opening set tiebreak
snapped an even longer Isner streak. In 429 tiebreakers played by Isner, he had never dropped one 7-0. Second seed Simona Halep overcame a thigh injury, baking heat and finally big-hitting German Sabine Lisicki to also reach the U.S. Open quarters for the first time. It was Labor Day in the United States but it was certainly no holiday for Halep who had to work for her spot in the last eight, needing two hours and 38 minutes under a broiling sun to dispatch Lisicki 6-7(6) 7-5 6-2 and reach the U.S. Open quarter-finals for the first time.
Waiting for the Romanian in the last eight is two-time U.S. Open finalist Victoria Azarenka, who advanced with a comfortable 6-3 6-4 win over American Varvara Lepchenko. After a couple of days of relief, the heat returned to Flushing Meadows turning the fourth round clash between Halep and Lisicki into a test of survival. After dropping the opening set Halep called out the trainer to have treatment on her left thigh and at the end of the second the players left the court when the heat rule came into effect, but through it all the exhausted Romanian was able to gut out a victory.

NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 8 (agENciES): Victoria Azarenka eased into the U.S. Open quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Varvara Lepchenko on Monday, setting up a clash against No. 2 seed Simona Halep later this week. Azarenka, seeded 20th, has enjoyed a relatively comfortable passage at Flushing Meadows so far, and the former world No. 1 has now reached the quarterfinals in four straight years, having been runnerup in 2012 and 2013. But things are about to become more difficult starting with the matchup against Halep, who overcame injury and fatigue to defeat Sabine Lisicki 6-7 (68), 7-5, 6-2. Halep, for her part, said she is feeling no pressure from the lofty expectations this year. "I had many expectations in (the) French Open and Wimbledon and wasn't good, so here I changed a little bit my mind, and I have no expectations," said Halep, who is 44-11 on tour this year. Halep was forced to dig deep at Louis Armstrong Stadium after needing heavy strapping to her left leg, which she said remained sore after the match. The grand slam hopeful required medical attention throughout the three-set battle, but the 23-year-old hopes to make a swift recovery in time for the last eight. Azarenka and Halep last met in 2012, when the former claimed two easy wins on hard courts. "Azarenka is playing well, started to play well

again," Halep said. "She has experience already. She won two grand slam (tournaments). So will be a tough one. But I know that I have my chances. "I have no pressure. Actually, I feel it. But I play well when I have pressure." Elsewhere on Monday, Sam Stosur, the 2011 U.S. Open champion, had her
campaign ended by Flavia Pennetta as the Italian's love affair with the year's final grand slam continued. For the sixth time in her career, Pennetta is into the last eight at the U.S. Open, her passage booked with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Australian. Awaiting Pennetta is No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova,
who starred in the big moments as she saw off the in-form Johanna Konta in straight sets. Kvitova had just two break-point opportunities throughout the match and converted both at crucial stages to reach her maiden quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows via a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

The 5th edition of Pochury Black Day Memorial Cup 2015 under the theme “Honoring the glorious past” kicked started here Monday with minister for environment, forests and climate change Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire as the chief guest. The Pochury Students’ Union (PSU) has been organizing Pochury Black Day Memorial Cup in commemoration of the 6th September Pochury Black Day. The Union organizes this cup with the vision to preserve, protect and promote unique identity and to spread the importance of “our history (through sports) in which our forefathers have sacrificed and laid down their precious lives for the cause of Naga nation.” Through this Cup, the Union also aims to transform football in their locality by creating a platform and opportunity to the youth to develop their talents and skills in sports. Source said the Pochury people have been observing September 6 as “Black Day” as on this day in 1960, nine persons from Matikhrii village
were massacred by the Indian Army by beheading them one by one. Gracing the inaugural function, Dr. Kire paid salute to all the martyrs who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of the Nagas. In the meantime, the minister wanted to see that this tournament grows bigger and bigger by taking it to the district level and gradually to the state level. Currently, this memorial cup is confined only within Meluri sub division. The minister called upon the youth to be serious in their quest to become successful sportspersons.
