The renewal of Mosman Square and the adjoining Village Green is well underway, including the laying of low carbon concrete edging to garden beds, Village Green seat steps and retaining walls
The new-look square will feature about 30 newly planted and 10 existing mature trees, along with more than 1,200 small shrubs and feature plants.
The redesign has a strong environmental focus with a new irrigation system and garden bed design supporting optimal use of natural rainwater and the Village Green being backfilled with soil removed from the square with its turf surface reinforced by mesh to promote longevity and low maintenance.
As the project progresses, an interactive playground and improved spaces for events, markets and outdoor dining along with moveable street furniture and enhanced lighting will take shape.
Historical aspects of the square, which was constructed in 1988, are being retained including the 18th century Italian Antico Fountain, as well as the distinctive black granite carved water sculpture, Meeting Place: Welumbulla Cyfafod by local artist Anne Ferguson. Monthly markets and quarterly night markets will return once the project is completed.
Works on the Allan Border Oval pavilion are also proceeding apace with the building’s roof soon to be installed, enabling the internal fit-out to be completed later in the year.
Landscaping works on the pavilion’s surrounds are also underway with external paths being excavated to provide improved accessibility.

Soft plastics recycling restarts
Mosman residents can again recycle soft plastics through the RecycleSmart program which recently resumed soft plastics collections after being paused in November last year following the collapse of previous recycling options.
RecycleSmart has partnered with Australian recycling company APR Plastics to recycle the waste into food grade plastic packaging, creating a circular waste solution.
Visit recyclesmart.com to book a Power Pickup for soft plastics, along with other tricky-to-recycle products such as unwanted clothes and coffee capsules, all collected from your doorstep. Meanwhile Mosman residents helped divert two shipping containers worth of unwanted electronic goods from landfill at Council’s e-waste day earlier this month.
Ahead of the next drop-off day on 27 August, Mosman residents can drop e-waste off for free at the Artarmon Community Recycling Centre or Kimbriki.

Youth Awards in Literature
Primary and secondary students can demonstrate their literary skills by entering Mosman Library Service’s annual prose and poetry writing competition. Now in its 31st year, with cash prizes totalling more than $2,000, entries are expected from across New South Wales. More than 120 guests attended Mosman Council’s International Women’s Day breakfast at Mosman Art Gallery on Wednesday 8 March. Special guest Australian Banking Association CEO and former Queensland Premier Anna Bligh AC spoke about her achievements and life journey, including her move to Mosman. Students from eight local schools as well as members of the public enjoyed a sit down breakfast while listening to Anna talk about her time in politics, her family, love of Mosman and various highlights of her impressive career.
NSW Youth Week
Council will host a range of activities for young people in Mosman during Youth Week which starts on 20 April.
The annual celebration of young people will be kicked off with an Acknowledgement of Country Workshop facilitated by Aunty Susan from The Gaimaragal Group, and include a ‘Raise the Youth’ dance party organised by Mosman Youth volunteers, along with a range of events hosted across the region by other lower North Shore councils and supported by Mosman Youth Services. Design Awards voting Mental Health First Aid
Council is launching a new program targetting mental health awareness and skills among high school students in years 10 to 12.
The program, which will be facilitated by accredited Mental Health First Aid trainers, aims to give teenagers the skills to recognise and support their friends experiencing mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, alcohol and drug use disorders, and psychosis, and to seek help from adults and support services. Sessions are fully subsidised by Mosman Council and will be held on Tuesdays on 9, 16 and 23 May from 4.30pm at Mosman Youth Centre. Harnett Park footbridge
The footbridge connecting Harnett Park in Mosman with the Cremorne Reserve footpath will remain closed for several months after a tree fell from private land onto the bridge during a storm in December.
Pedestrians are advised to avoid the area by taking an alternative walking route via stairs from Harnett Park, above Mosman Rowers, to Lower Boyle Street and the Lower Spofforth steps.
The alternate walking path is sign posted and works to repair the bridge are being coordinated with assistance from North Sydney Council.
EV charger milestone
Council’s fast charging network has now saved more than 60,000 kg of CO₂ following the installation of two new Evie Networks electric vehicle fast chargers in Raglan Street West car park in Mosman Junction. Together with the original Mosman Square car park charger which was installed in December 2020, the network now averages a total of more than 110 sessions saving more than 1,750 kg of CO₂ each week. The chargers help curb Mosman’s carbon footprint as electricity supplied through the charger to electric vehicles is renewable, avoiding the burning of fossil fuels.
Council is monitoring usage of the network to cater for the expected growth in the use of chargers as more motorists opt for electric vehicles in coming years.
Solar panels installed
Tech table builds skills
Solar panels have been installed on Mosman Civic Centre in one of the key conversions to renewable energy for Council’s buildings.
Solar panels and a battery have also been installed at Council’s works depot, together with battery storage for Marie Bashir Sports Hall’s solar array. Council is continuing to lower its energy use toward its target for operations of net zero by 2030 by switching facilities and buildings to LED lighting, installing rooftop solar PV and adopting technological and behavioural efficiency measures.
All Mosman Council’s energy is also now supplied by renewable sources.
A new interactive table has been installed in the Creation Space at Barry O’Keefe Library to help support adults living with dementia or intellectual disabilities.
Designed to challenge players at their own level to help develop or maintain skills in a fun and playful way, participants can choose from a range of games which work on physical, cognitive, social and sensory levels and can be used by those with cognitive challenges as well as their carers. Living Seawall installed
Special panels have been fitted to a seawall at Ellery Park, near The Spit, mimicking features of nature, such as rockpools, crevices and hollows, providing much-needed habitats for marine organisms. The tiles increase the surface area of the wall, providing protective habitat for seaweed and invertebrates, which in turn provide shelter and food for resident and transient fish.
Mosman Council worked with SIMS Living Seawalls to identify and support The Spit seawall as a suitable, prominent location and $41,000 in grant funding from the Mosman Environmental Foundation’s inaugural grants program enabled the project to come to fruition.
Living Seawalls in other parts of Sydney Harbour support at least 36 per cent more species, including invertebrates, seaweed and fish, and increase biodiversity more than plain, unmodified seawalls with similar results expected along Mosman’s shorelines. Bush to Bowl youth workshops
Wednesdays 5–26 April, 4–5.30pm, Mosman Youth Centre Green-thumbed teens can get involved in a free four-week program about native plants and food.
The hands-on journey into gardening, including a bush tucker introduction, garden bed preparation and maintenance of a native garden, is suitable for newcomers through to seasoned gardeners, with all equipment provided. Archibald Hugh Mosman exhibition
Wednesday 19 April–Sunday 14 May, Barry O’Keefe Library
This Australian Heritage Festival Exhibition tells the fascinating story of Mosman’s namesake, Archibald Hugh Mosman who left Scotland for Sydney in 1828.
The merchant, whaler and pastoralist made a name for himself in the colony and left his name for posterity.
Mosman Art Gallery exhibitions
Local artists will have centre-stage at Mosman Art Gallery over coming weeks as part of the Artists of Mosman 2088 exhibition.
The exhibition will be on show until 23 April in the gallery’s main exhibition space.
On the ground floor, in the In Profile exhibition space for local artists, Terhi Hakola uses symbolism, Scandinavian mythology and narratives across installation, video, animation and painting, to examine universal human experiences.
Car seat checks
Mosman residents can apply for a free professional installation or inspection of their child car restraints by an authorised restraint fitter at their home.

Festival of Mosman
Community groups are invited to start planning their own festival events and there will be sponsorship opportunities for local businesses for this year’s Festival of Mosman which will run from Friday 20 October to Sunday 29 October.
Plans are already underway for a comprehensive program of community events including an opening concert featuring local community groups, a night market and outdoor cinemas.

Defibrillator locations
Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are located around Mosman for use in emergencies involving cardiac arrest.
Each year, about 3800 people in New South Wales experience an outof-hospital cardiac arrest, and sadly around 90% are unable to be revived. Studies have shown that the combination of CPR and defibrillation can increase survival rates by up to 70%.
Defibrillators are located in Mosman Civic Centre reception and Mosman Square Seniors Centre, Barry O’Keefe Library, Mosman Art Gallery, Marie Bashir Mosman Sports Centre, Balmoral Baths amenities and Tramshed amenities blocks and Balmoral, Middle Head, Rawson and Allan Border ovals as well as other locations.

Responsible pet owners
Council encourages responsible pet ownership in Mosman. Please pick up after your dog and also keep your companion under effective control as required in Mosman’s on and off-leash areas so they don’t negatively impact others.
When using streets and public places dogs must be kept on leash except during designated hours in off-leash areas, such as Rawson Park and Sirius Cove Reserve, which are clearly signposted.
When using off-leash areas, owners should stay near their dog, keep a watchful eye on its behaviour and be ready to intervene at any time. For a full listing of all dog exercise areas in Mosman visit mosman.nsw.gov.au/pets
