In our interview, he shares logical and concise insights on how anyone can build their own wealth by taking smart risks and thinking critically about their decisions.

Dennis Postema: What is going on in your life?

Micah McDonald: There’s never a dull moment. I’m always looking for new opportunities. Right now, I’m most excited about a tequila mezcal brand I’m working on called Trulusso. That’s been a labor of love for close to three years, and I can’t wait to see my time, effort and energy come to fruition with the launch of this product in the first quarter of 2025.

Additionally, I’ve started dabbling in the moneylending business. Real estate development is a focus of mine right now, primarily in Southern California.

Dennis: What was the process you and your partners went through to get the proper tequila for your product?

Micah: We faced many hurdles. I’ve been talking about it with people for so long that I think some of my friends thought, “He’s never going to have tequila on the market.”

Starting a new brand in the luxury market is not an aspiration for the undetermined. You cannot take shortcuts in quality,

design or flavor profiles. We had an intimate connection to every part of the process, from the bottle design to the packaging.

It took our team six months to sort out how the tops needed to sit on the bottle. That’s the level of dedication it required to make sure our product is exactly as it needs to be when we launch it, but we never got discouraged.

We executed quickly and precisely and demolished every roadblock. We found solutions and moved forward.

I can’t tell you how many times we heard no over the past three years. “You can’t do this. This isn’t going to happen.”

If you’re building a brand, refuse to take no for an answer. Keep pushing through.

Many people would’ve called the whole thing off at any one of those junctions. But we refused to give in, and now our tequila is everything it’s supposed to be. I’m going straight for a market share with the big boys.

You’re going to see Trulusso sitting next to the big luxury tequilas on shelves soon enough.

Dennis: What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?

Micah: Develop a hard skin and get used to being told no. Learn how to overcome challenges and problems. If you are not solution driven, being an entrepreneur is going to be difficult. It’s not fun or flashy trying to create something from scratch.

They say, “It gets darkest before the dawn,” and throughout this process I thought many times that the dawn was coming, only for things to get much darker.

Believe in yourself more than anything. Know that you’ll figure out a way to make it happen. Even when there doesn’t appear to be a solution, know in your heart that there is one and that you’ll find it. Be relentless. Keep pushing.

Move fast. If you lose momentum, your efforts will fizzle out and die.

If you don’t have tenacity, consistency and relentlessness to make things work, then entrepreneurship probably isn’t for you.

People get the wrong impression about entrepreneurship based on what they see online. Everybody wants to see the view, but nobody wants to fuck with the climb, right? Nobody is an overnight success. People want results but have no idea what it takes to achieve them. What you see on social media is not the grueling work, time, effort, energy and resources that entrepreneurs take out of themselves to reap those rewards, and that’s what washes out so many aspiring entrepreneurs.

I’ve seen many

competitors pop up with alcohol brands in five or six months, but they went the cheap route, skimping on quality. Anyone can make low-quality tequila in a glass wine bottle with a poorly designed label and toss it into the market. That’s not us. That’s not who or what we are. We have spent three years creating our drink.

It’s not just a tequila or mezcal in my mind; it’s a product that embodies a lifestyle. It embodies who I am as a person, enjoying the journey, celebrating each step. Doing it with a high-quality cocktail is a great option, right?

Dennis: When entrepreneurs hit plateaus, new challenges come along. What are your thoughts on that?

Micah: I listen to many podcasts. There are a lot of buzzwords and key phrases out there. I recently heard a podcaster say that 90% of your problems can be remedied with a workout and going out to make more money.

I don’t know what problems you have, but I don’t have problems

that are solved by closing a deal. My problems are massive, and they are not easily solved, but I’d take them any day because I know what I’m doing and that’s why I have those problems.

I don’t want little nonsense problems that are resolved by having a chest day or back day.

If you’re having little problems, you’re doing little things. More money does mean more problems, and the size of the problems are correlated to the scale of things you’re doing. My problems are tremendous, and I do everything I can to conquer them. Give me money problems. I’ll take them all day.

Too many people lack critical thinking skills. There are genius visionaries out there with unreal ideas, but they can’t think critically enough to execute their vision. If you’re an idea person, find a critical thinker to partner up with so your idea can become reality. It’s tough.

There are people who possess both, though, and they’re unstoppable. They’re the real shot callers, the game changers.

They’re running circles around everyone.

Dennis: Do you believe that once a business owner reaches millionaire status, they’re able to transfer their learned skills into other business ventures?

Micah: Everyone starts from zero. I’m not afraid to venture into anything, and I think it’s because I know those same principles that allowed me to grow my first $1 million are still present. If I had to start over right now, I could do it again. I could put my

skills to use in just about any business and figure out how to execute the proper plans, systems, protocols and procedures around it. I could replicate them and tweak them to work in any industry.

Once you figure out how to make $1 million, you learn how to make $5 million, and it scales. Earning $5 million was easier than that initial $1 million.

Remove the self-limiting beliefs from your brain. I’m taking the same blueprint and applying it

to other industries that are massively scalable that I’m going to make $10 or $100 million from.

Real estate is a great example. It’s slow and steady. Some are working with houses worth a few hundred thousand dollars. They remodel them and this and that, but if they leveraged themselves and believed in themselves more, then they could put that same money, effort and energy into something that would net them ten times more money.

Why do a $500,000 deal when you could do a $5 million deal? And then work your way up. How can you edit your blueprint to make $50 million instead?

As you go, you learn what work is and isn’t worth your time because the numbers aren’t high enough. I have business opportunities placed in front of me, and I analyze them. If they’re not scalable enough, they aren’t high-value enough, if there isn’t a big exit strategy, and so on, they aren’t worth my time. Everyone looks at the return on investment, but that doesn’t matter if the numbers are too low.

Even if something doesn’t go right in real estate, the beautiful part about it is you’re still sitting on an asset. If you come up with a great idea, a new concept, or a new app, and it doesn’t work out, you’re looking at a loss of both money and time. With real estate, you’ll always have that building until you sell it.

Numbers don’t lie, so don’t lie to yourself about numbers. Stop wasting your time with little deals that will take forever to

build the wealth you’re aiming for. Where there is no risk, there is no reward.

Dennis: How do you get past fear and leap into those higher-value deals?

Micah: I grew up broke. I remember the insults from friends and neighborhood kids growing up. I remember being the poor kid. I know everyone who told me I wouldn’t be successful. I remember their exact words. I love being underestimated. I love it when people size me up and don’t realize what I’ve done, where I’ve been, who I am. It fuels me to blow past them.

I still struggle mentally with money because there were times when I was one or two decisions away from being broke. It’s always in the back of my mind that I know what it’s like to have nothing, to have no money in the bank account, to wonder how I’m going to pay the bills. I don’t think I’ll ever shake that feeling, but it’s good because it drives me.

That fear is my number one enemy. I need enemies, right? It’s a constant fight. I’m never going to fucking be

broke ever again. I need that internal battle to push me forward. I push myself to level up. If you’re lacking dedication—I think motivation is nonsense, and it’s all about dedication—you need to put a chip on your shoulder.

Find a reason. That girl dumped you. Your school friends made fun of you. Your teacher said you wouldn’t amount to anything. Take all of that and harness it. There is no better comeback to all of that than those very people watching you rise.

Houston is where many of my haters reside, and they can’t stand seeing me successful. It’s not about your material things, though. It’s about what you tell yourself you’re capable of doing. It’s about believing in yourself.

It feels incredible to know I put this work and pride in and that I am where I am because of it. Be proud of yourself. Ignore people who call you cocky. I’ll be the first to applaud people who recognize when to pat themselves on the back. You’re capable. You’re good. Look at what you were able to build, and keep building. Don’t feel

like you’re supposed to shy away from your success. If you work for it, you’re supposed to have it.

I’m not supposed to be here. There’s nothing about my life that’s supposed to be where it is right now. But I’m just getting started.

Keep taking risks on yourself. If a deal has the same risk, energy,

resources and probability of success, but I’m going to make seven or eight figures instead of five or six, why not aim for the higher figures?

That’s when you start leveling up.

If I’m working on a real estate project and I’m unable to fund it with my own income, it’s time to get to work by putting a

business plan together. So many people who have money don’t have time. Lawyers and doctors are perfect examples of people who have money but no time to invest in anything other than the stock market. They know real estate is the path to more money, but they don’t have time to find real estate deals. Write a business plan, sit there in front of fifteen doctors, and convince them all to invest $100,000 each, then go make that $10 million deal with other people’s money. Put in the same amount of work as though you were making a little $20,000 deal.

It’s straightforward. Logical. The only thing that holds people back is fear. What if this fails? I’m going to lose my $10,000. Who cares? It’s not doing anything for you, anyway.

Go raise a few million dollars. If you believe in yourself enough and you present to investors as such, they’ll believe in you as well. They have nothing but money, and they want to put that money to work.
