EDITOR’S LETTER

H

ello Mum, November is usually a quick month for me as the countdown to Christmas begins. But this year, I won’t be leaving gift shopping until the last minute. If you want to do the same, find inspiration from my favourite picks of the month (page 6) or turn to our gift guide for Children’s Day (November 20th) on page 53. I’m always in awe of mumpreneurs, especially those with babies and toddlers. This month, we met with our cover star Sarah Jones and her little daughter Willow, to find out how she manages work-life balance. Our usual “24 Hours in the life of…” page has been given a twist this month too, to showcase a gentleman, while marking Men’s Health Awareness month. Looking to head back to work after a long period? Turn to page 26 for expert advice from other moms. In this issue, you will also find tips on teaching your child toilet independency (page 31), advice on putting together a nutritious lunchbox (page 38), and health trends (page 36). If you’re looking for the best in dining, a staycation, and a travel destination for the season ahead, peruse through our Good Living section from page 45.

Happy reading!

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE

Expecting About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be

February

My husband and I got married in April 2017 and we were excited to start a family over the coming 12 months once my work allowed for it. The first test we took was when I woke up at 4am in the middle of the night. When I saw the blue line, I started crying and woke my husband up, we lay there so excited and happy until the sun came up. The next day I did several more tests just to make sure.

I had particularly high HCG levels in my first trimester. The average person measures around 400 and my levels were at 4,000! When the doctor called us to confirm the pregnancy, she said she suspected twins! It was later confirmed on the 11-week scan that it was just one baby. I had particularly bad morning sickness the first 12 weeks, which many people often say means you are having a girl, but I believe it to have been the crazy high HCG levels.

April

This was quite a scary month for us as I had two bouts of mild bleeding. Fortunately, everything was alright, and I found out that bleeding happens

"I bought about 5 suitcases full of baby clothes!" to roughly 30% of pregnant women. In my case, I had developed pockets of blood which can either bleed out or reabsorb back into your lining. We are blessed with the incredible Doctor George at Genesis clinic who couldn’t have been more reassuring. I think awareness around early stage bleeding is incredibly important.

May

We found out the Harmony test results and were so excited to know what we were having! The whole family was betting on a boy and we even had a name. Dr. George must have been laughing at us throughout the entire scan and finally confirmed we were having a baby girl - I was so excited! I am also making the most of finally looking definitely pregnant and not looking like I had put on a bit of weight!

June

I was finally getting into the swing of things and feeling more human, also feeling more used to my body and all the growing symptoms. We had a trip planned to Europe for the end of the month, and our first stop was Greece. The swelling was an understatement when I got off the five-hour flight, even

with wearing compression socks and walking around every hour - I was told this was par for the course and it soon subsides.

July

We go back to Europe and took full advantage of John Lewis and how much cheaper it is in the UK. Researching what to buy when in the UK, on every Facebook group we came back with a car seat, pram and about five suitcases full of baby clothes!

August

This month was all about nesting. My mother-in-law told me to get the nursery ready before I got any bigger and didn’t want to move too much and she was right. I also set up @expatmamas.me

with Frankie Hales. We met over social media and found out we were due just three days apart. We wanted to create a personal, honest and fun account for Dubai of our pregnancy, that could help people with general and local tips to make their journey easier.

September

This was such a hilarious month as I reached 30 weeks. You feel so close but yet so far - we cannot wait to meet our little one and are focused on making sure we are ready as parents. We also started the Love Parenting Hypnobirthing course with Ana, who has been amazing, and have been lucky enough to deal with the Malaak team who have taught us so much breastfeeding tips in particular!

6:00AM

My alarm goes off and I do yoga stretches and exercise before showering. I live on a beach on the east coast of Ireland, so beautiful early morning sunrises can be an inspiring way to start my day.

8:00AM

EDWARD MCCLOSKEY To mark Men's Health Awareness month, and support a dad in business, we look at a day in the life of Edward McCloskey, Chairman and CEO of WaterWipes

Breakfast for me, especially when I am at home and not travelling, is nearly always porridge with fresh fruits. That usually sets me up till lunch time. I might scan the daily paper (Business section, then Sports, the front page is my default!) or my iPad, and quickly check for important emails. 16 | NOVEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

If I’m in Ireland, my journey to work is a 25-minutes drive – a pleasant and manageable commute. I don’t think I would enjoy lengthy journeys to and from work. I am very lucky. I am the CEO and Chairman of WaterWipes, but I have a brilliant, committed and hard-working team whom I relish working with, whilst trying not to get in their way. What excites me the most is working with my colleagues – the talent and energy is inspiring. I am also very excited about what we can achieve globally in the coming years; a fantastic product and team is an irresistible combination.

behind schedule. I am a bit of a petrolhead, and love cars, engines, etc. I built a little sporty kitcar some years ago; I occasionally take it out on country lanes over the weekend. I also have an old 12-cylinder Jaguar, which is my pride and joy. All this is my weekend sorted.

THE STORY OF

WATERWIPES

by Edward McCloskey

8:00PM

Lunch is nearly always a ‘working lunch’, even if informal; over a salad, soup or sandwich, with colleagues. There is so much happening at WaterWipes, and I am also heavily involved in another business (branded foods manufacturing and distribution), so there are a lot of demands on my time. Occasionally, I go to the gym during lunch, but to be honest that doesn’t happen as frequently as it appears in my diary. Must try harder!

5:30-7:00PM

No routine for evening meals. My daughters are in university or studying for final school exams. Dinner is usually with some of my family members, or friends, or work colleagues – it varies a lot. I really enjoy cooking when I have spare time. This is usually at weekends only. I like to get some nice ingredients (fresh fish, interesting vegetables, etc.) and then experiment with a theme in mind. Nobody has complained or been poisoned yet! The best family time together usually revolves around holidays or short breaks away, which we plan in quite a lot every year. I am well able to relax and shut off from work during those times.

11:00PM If I can get some exercise in, great. I have started training for a 10K run which is happening in a few weeks. Although, I’m

No rituals before bed – I am usually plenty tired enough and conk out soon after my head hits the pillow.

When our first daughter was born, she suffered with sensitive skin and developed bad nappy rash. I wanted to find out why, so I took a look at the ingredients in the baby wipes we were using. I was shocked to learn just how many chemicals were in them – and questioned should we be putting them on her delicate skin? I thought there had to be a better way, so I set about creating a purer and safe alternative. Many years later and after a lot of hard work, testing, and scientific research, the perfect baby wipes, were born. As pure, gentle and safe for the most delicate skin but in the convenience of a baby wipe, WaterWipes are a suitable alternative to cotton wool and water. Every day, in every corner of the world, new mums and dads are discovering the benefits of our gentle and safe wipes for their baby’s skin, I hope you like them too. arah Jones is in a flowy polka dot dress, sneakers, and running behind Willow, her 1-year old daughter, when we arrive at her home in Downtown Dubai. The yummy mummy moved here to dive into the world of finance with her first job in the Middle East. She soon found herself spotting gaps in the e-commerce market, a void she knew she had to fill. “After four years undertaking a degree in Economics at Edinburgh University, I secured a position at Deloitte London in the retail M&A team and seconded out to the Middle East a few years later,” she says. After arriving in the sandpit, Sarah managed to spot the gap, secure funding and launch Sprii.com - the online site providing everything for mums. “I adore my day job and my team and now feel like I’m definitely in the right role - not only am I doing what I love in the world of e-commerce, but we’re also helping to make mummies lives easier.” The leap into the world of e-commerce wasn’t new to Sarah. At the tender age of 14, Sarah was bitten by the business bug and set up an eBay business importing items from across the globe, to sell in the UK. “I think deep down if you end up being an entrepreneur, you were born with it in your DNA. For me, it wasn’t about making money, it was about “doing business” and from a very young age I loved the thrill of buying and selling.” But how did she switch careers? Prior to Sprii, Sarah worked in Mergers & Acquisitions and came across a businesses in the e-commerce space, however in the “Mums” vertical there were limited options and a lack of availability of international products in the Middle East online. “We launched an authentic experience from start to finish - excellent navigation on the website, the widest product offering at competitive prices and an incredible customer service team who always go

above and beyond. This wasn’t being done by anyone else,” says Sarah. The word Sprii was derived from the term shopping spree. “We couldn’t afford the “ee” so went for the “ii” instead,” she laughs and tells me. Having your own business ‒ baby or no baby ‒ is hard work. “You need to love what you do because you’re mentally always “on” when it’s yours. You need to be ambitious and resilient and happy to ride the roller-coaster that is setting up and scaling a business.” Flexibily

is an element most women like to focus on. The fact that you can drop your child to nursery or school, pack lunches, come home and play after work, but Sarah tells us in all honesty, she works just as hard as she did before giving birth. “I love Sprii, I love going to work everyday and feel so fulfilled when I come home, and then love my weekends with my family. For me, this balance works.” Little Willow is busy playing peek-aboo while we chat, trying to run away

from the camera yet intrigued enough to stare back at the lense with her stunning big blue eyes. At this point, I’m intrigued to know what 24 hours in Sarah’s life is like? “Wake up, tea and breakfast and then playtime with my daughter ‒ normally banging on a xylophone with her! ‒ or pushing her around the house on her pink car. Off to work for a full day of meetings 9am8pm and then head to paddle tennis or dinner with my husband or friend before bed! I’m not very good at sitting still,” she replies. Obviosuly being your own boss means there are a few challenges or disadvantages, especially when you have to split time between your child, home life and work. “Being an entrepreneur means being switched on 24/7 - there’s no off button and as anyone who knows me will tell you, I’m never off my phone! For your business to succeed, you have to give it your all - it’s a necessary sacrifice. Balancing a MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | NOVEMBER 2018 | 23

It’s really tough at the beginning but also incredibly exciting seeing something grow from the offset

baby and Sprii is only possible because I have an amazing support network at home.” As for challenges while the business was in its infancy, Sarah says she naturally came across loads. “Growing a business, hiring top talent, operating quite literally from your dining table, fundraising, securing the first few brands, scaling revenue - it’s really tough at the beginning but also incredibly exciting seeing something grow from the offset.” Overtime though, Sarah has learnt she can’t please everyone and it isn’t her job to try to. “Balance for everyone is different, so it’s what works for you. For me it’s working hard during the week and trying to switch off at the weekends.”

Her advice for other moms looking to become their own boss? “Choose a business and industry you’re passionate about. Don’t expect it to be an easy ride, and know that it will be incredibly challenging and fulfuilling.” 24 | NOVEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Back to Work Tips

Heading into the workplace or committing to freelance work after a long leave of absence can be quite hectic for moms. Discover expert tips and first-hand advice from moms in the city

26 | NOVEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Did you know that when fewer women participate in the workplace, the global economy operates without the talents, skills and abilities of 51% of the world’s population? To seamlessly ease your way back into your career, here are a few tips from moms who did:

1

“Take the time to decide what you want and the time commitment you want to make. This is critical to working out the workplace that suits you. Do you want to rejoin the traditional workplace in a full time 9-5 role, or looking for flexitimings that allow you to still do the school runs? Alternatively, you could work from home and choose freelance jobs and hours on your own terms,” says Hiba Sabra, co-founder and Communications Manager at Maharati (an online platform that helps women enter the workforce)

2

“Absence makes the heart grow fonder. While it may seem completely counterintuitive, time apart can be beneficial for both mum and baby. Spending time apart from your child will only make reuniting with them after a long day more special. I honestly feel that spending time apart means that I return excited and ready to play,” says Rosa Bullock, Founder of PR agency Sociate

3

“Re-entering the work place after a long maternity absence is a key milestone for any mother, leaving the apple of your eyes at home in the care of someone else. Ensuring you have a home care assistant with the right level of care and focus is more important than anything. Make sure you monitor and coach her for a period of time before leaving your child and home, so that she understands your child and is prepared for their social behaviours and needs,” – Amina Khan, Client Relations Manager at Elite Babies and Tots)

4

“From nursing bra and sweatpants to power suit and heels... or at least a slightly more formal attire, post-natal identity crises are all too common. While a challenging tightrope act, being a working mom keeps me relevant in my own eyes and I keep my identity. Prior to having my daughter, SOCIATE was my baby. It fills my heart to care for them both. Doing it in killer heels makes it even better!” says Rosa

5

“Read & Reskill. This is going to be one of the most rewarding and future-proofing steps you can take. Automation will eventually take over 30-45% of the world’s current jobs. Get up-to-date, use your skills or find something you are passionate about and start your side hustle,” says Hiba MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | NOVEMBER 2018 | 27

KINGS’ INSIGHT: THE VALUE-ADD OF

international

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

Educational leadership in an international context brings practitioners a number of rewards and challenges, and there are many positives for leaders who choose to make the leap into the international sector.

Ashleigh Thompson

Deputy Headteacher at Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba took to the podium at last month’s Middle East School Leadership Conference to talk about best practice in international leadership

According to a 2018 survey of 204 international school leaders by Leadership Search Consultancy, almost 80% of those surveyed stated that they were ‘highly likely’ to recommend working in international school leadership to an aspiring colleague. This is good news for international schools and their communities. Many leaders list opportunities to innovate, the enthusiasm of pupils and teachers, the diverse cultures and pace of practice as the reasons why they choose to stay in the international sector. What makes a successful international leader? The definition and criteria for what makes a really strong educational leader in the international context is often sought by governors, leadership teams, parents and teachers. Best practice in educational leadership is transient, adaptive and reactive, and isn’t a concrete concept that can be universally applied across contexts. However, there are key qualities that could be

used as indicators to demonstrate these characteristics. Parents that are interested in a particular school could ask the leadership team for examples of how they have demonstrated the below leadership traits: • Promoting collective efficacy • A variety of leadership styles, including ‘coaching’ • Empowering their staff to take managed risks • Being thankful • Being emotionally intelligent • Showing resilience • Balancing when to intervene • Giving teachers opportunities to use professional autonomy Successful leaders will be able to describe how these traits have a direct correlation with improving outcomes for children. Ongoing dialogue between leaders, that is based on shared experiences, creates purposeful, current and relevant awareness and understanding of best international leadership practice. And, ultimately, these fundamentally relevant and incisive discussions promote the reflections that shape leadership vision for school improvement and success.

TOILET Training

Dr. Vandana Gandhi, Founder and CEO of British Orchard Nursery shares her advice on teaching children toilet independence 32 | NOVEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

The right time

Before beginning the process, ensure that the time is right. Make sure that there are no significant changes happening in your child’s life that may interrupt his or her routines. For example, if a family member is visiting for a few days – that may not be the best time to start; or if your child is not fully settled at the nursery – you may want to wait until your child is more comfortable and confident. Remind yourself that there is no deadline for getting your child out of nappies. Every child is different. Some children may become toilet independent in a month, whereas other children may require a few more. An important indicator to whether your child is ready or not, is to assess whether they show an interest. To support building your child’s interest, you may choose to show your child the toilet, and explain to them how it works. Allow them to flush the toilet a few times too!

Foster a partnership

Speak to the nursery staff as this is

an important step in your child’s life. Discuss strategies that you want to try or ones that you have tried. Consistency from home to nursery is crucial at this stage. Some points to discuss with the staff include how frequent and for how long should your child be encouraged to sit on the toilet, how your child communicates his or her need for the toilet, and ways in which your child is reinforced when he or she is successful.

From nappies to waterproof underwear

Nappies are easy for parents, because they limit the “mess” created. However, they are also strategically designed to provide your child with comfort, limiting the sensation of being wet. Alternatively, you can try using waterproof underwear or training pants, that are absorbent enough for your child to feel the wetness if he or she has an “accident”. This will definitely encourage your child to use the toilet. Another motivator is to allow your child to choose what underwear

(colour, prints, etc) they would like to purchase, and wear, as they make their transition from nappies to underwear.

Accidents are part of the process

Becoming toilet independent is a new and exciting concept to your child. The continuous support from family and classroom staff is essential. Your child is in the process of making huge, positive transitions as they switch from wearing nappies to using the toilet. Toileting accidents will occur and it is all part of the process – refrain from getting frustrated and avoid scolding or overreacting, as this will only intimidate your child and cause unnecessary stress. To support your child in achieving this big milestone, continue celebrating all the little steps within the process – like walking with you to the toilet, sitting on it, attempting to use it, and finally, using the toilet effectively and flushing the toilet. Make sure you teach them to wash their hands after too!

Diabetes Mellitus in Children

Dr. Mazen Abou Chaaban, Consultant Pediatrician/Pediatric Nephrologist at Emirates Specialty Hospital, Dubai Healthcare City, advices parents on dealing with diabetes in children What are the different types of diabetes mellitus and which one do children get? There are two types of diabetes mellitus. Type 1 is insulin dependent, and children and teenagers are more disposed to this kind of diabetes. Type 2 is more common in adults.

Can diabetes mellitus be prevented? Yes, it can be prevented. Raise your children healthy by avoiding sweets and providing them with a wholesome balanced diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and only the required calories. By following this diet and regime, you can also prevent your children from becoming obese. Obesity is the main predisposing factor to diabetes mellitus in children.

What kind of complications are people with diabetes susceptible to? Short term complications include a drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or high levels of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) with keto acidosis, where the level of blood sugar and acids in the blood are high. This can interfere with all metabolic processes too. Long term complications include slow wound healing, diabetic retinopathy (eye problems), kidney disturbance, hypertension, and growth and liver problems.

What are the warning signs if blood sugar goes high or low? If it is high (hyperglycemic), they will suffer from blurry vision, tiredness and dehydration, upset stomach and dizziness, frequency in urination, and headaches. When it is low (hypoglycemia), adults and children can suffer from irregular heart rhythm, fatigue, shakiness, perspiration, hunger, pale skin, irritability and anxiety.

How often should adults check a child’s blood sugar level? Checking of blood sugar level depends on the severity of the disease, the fluctuation

of the blood sugar and the treatment plan. But normally, it should be three times a day, before meals, to be able to calculate the doses of insulin to be given to the child.

Should adults inform the school about their child’s diabetes mellitus? Yes, the school should be aware about his/her diabetic condition, medication and timings. The diet plan - written and decided by the treating doctor – should be given to the school to make sure he/she follows it stringently. It’s great if there’s a friend in class who is aware of the health condition and can support your child when necessary.

specific diabetic diet but do make sure they understand the significance of consuming a diet rich in fibre, protein, and limited amount of carbohydrates according to their body weight and other requirements, decided by his/her treating doctor.

A NUTRITIOUS LUNCHBOX Everything you need to know about packing a nourishing meal for your child

38 | NOVEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Lunchboxes can be quite the challenge. It’s not just about packing a sandwich, crisps and a juice box. In fact, while some of us did get the mentioned lunch, looking back, it probably wasn’t the most nutritious, energy-boosting lunch to consume. "Kids spend 1/3 of their day at school and thus their lunch box should provide at least 1/3 of their daily needs for proper physical and mental performance," says Rasha Omer, Market Nutritionist at Nestlé Middle East.

Lunchboxes need to be interesting enough for picky eaters, convenient, and contain all the essential nutrients for them to focus in class, grow healthily, and get a boost of energy. Before you begin adding the essential food groups to each box, it’s worth sitting down with your child and creating a menu so that they are involved – this reduces the likelihood of food getting passed on, being thrown away, or uneaten.

THE FOOD GROUPS Breads and cereals

Fruit

Nutrients

Types to try

These carbohydrates provide a major source of energy for the body and brain

Whole meal, multigrain, pita or other flat breads, fruit loaf, brown or wild rice, pasta, crispbreads, rice crackers.

Packed with nutrients and fibre. Serve about two portions a day

Slice fruit for convenience or serve it whole.

Great source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals

Children love crudités and bite-sized items such as cherry tomatoes, peppers, snow peas, carrots, celery sticks, and cucumbers. You can also serve baby corn or corn on the cob. Salad vegetables or coleslaw works well in sandwiches. Try to sneak in beetroot in brownies, or kale and greens in smoothies whenever possible.

Major source of calcium. Include one serving of dairy in each lunchbox.

Milk, cheese or yoghurt.

Protein for growing bodies.

Add hummous as a dip for crudites, or as a spread on pita bread. Turkey, tuna, hard-boiled eggs and chicken are great sandwich fillers.

health HOW TO PREP? 1. Take your children shopping so that they are involved from the start. 2. Make sure you always have fresh fruit, vegetables, milk, yoghurt, bread and crackers on hand. 3. Make your own snacks at home. You can get the children involved in this activity and get them to make protein balls, granola bars packed with seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, and chia), oat muffins, and fruit salad.

4. Keep a reusable water on hand or pack one with each lunch box. Make sure to tell your children to re-fill these at school. Try to stay clear from carbonated or sugar-loaded juices and cordials, as these can cause tooth decay. 5. Buy an ice pack for their lunch bags, to make sure food is kept cool at all times.

MAKE IT FUN

Tricks to make food all the more appealing • Cut sandwiches into fingers, squares,

or use cookie cutters to make fun shapes (stars, gingerbread men, etc.) • Serve it differently. Instead of simply placing fruit in a box, make a skewer with strawberries, grapes, and pineapple. • Get creative with ingredients. Make your piece of salami look like a monster by placing olives for eyes or play around with bananas and berries for eyes on waffles, and half a slice of kiwi for the mouth.

HOW TO COPE WITH LOSING YOUR

CHILD? Counsellor and author Nicola Beer offers advice for grieving parents

The loss of a child is one of the worst types of pain anyone can endure. Whether your child was one week old or thirty-five years old there really are no words. In a perfect world no parent would ever have to say goodbye to his or her child, but the reality is that there are sadly a lot more parents outliving their children than we realize.

who’s been through something similar. A lady who sought counselling with me lost a newborn baby and was severely depressed but told me later that it was only when she found out that another woman in Dubai had also lost a child and was working with me to release the grief, did she feel comfortable to ask for help herself.

There are also millions of women who suffer the pain of losing their child through pregnancy. I’ve worked with women who have had several miscarriages and as well as with women who felt forced to have an abortion and deeply regret it. So, I am providing some tips to help you deal with the loss of a child.

It’s natural to feel empty, numb, angry, depressed, confused, unmotivated and in a state of shock, as grief takes many forms. Grief is a natural and normal healthy reaction to loss, and without processing grief we can suffer far longer. When we block our feelings with keeping busy, using sleeping tablets, alcohol or over eating, we can stop the natural healing process. Aside from bereavement counselling and meeting people who’ve been through a similar loss, there are several other things you can do to help you cope if you’ve lost a child, whether it happened a few weeks, months or years ago:

In the US alone, an estimated 228,000 children and young adults pass away each year. For those of you who’ve lost a child, you are not alone. Very often it’s easy for people to think that no one else could possibly comprehend what they’ve been through – until they meet someone 42 | NOVEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

TALK TO SOMEONE This might seem like a very basic tip but it’s surprising how many people will try and go through the grieving process alone. As a grief recovery specialist, I’ve helped many women, men and married couples who’ve lost a child. Every case was different, and everyone grieved and coped in their own way in their own time, but the people who talked about their loss in the long-run managed to pick up the pieces of their lives and rebuild them bit by bit. It’s no easy task but by taking it one day, one week at a time and having someone to talk to can make a world of difference. Many of the women and men that come to me for grief and bereavement counselling come many years after the death, as they didn’t have the chance to share how they felt at the time. Talking to a specialist is also important if you are struggling with acceptance and wondering: What did I do to deserve this? Why me? Why us? Know that it is normal to think like this, especially at the beginning and getting help can lessen this.

DO TAKE EXTRA CARE OF YOURSELF

When you are grieving it is so important to eat well, get adequate sleep and avoid turning to alcohol and excessive eating to numb the pain. Whilst it’s easy to reach for the bottle or medication every night, a lady I worked with recently switched from drinking several glasses of wine a night to juicing before bedtime. There are some excellent juices and anti-oxidant supplements to help ease anxiety, stress and insomnia. She chose juicing lettuce, celery and grapes to help her sleep after her son passed away and found it

helped. Juicing can also be therapeutic the whole preparation process and it’s an activity you can do allowing your hands to be busy but mind to process the grief. If you can find a good nutritionist or natural homeopathic doctor they should also be able to help you by prescribing you with some extra vitamin and mineral supplements to help your body cope with the intense feelings you are going through.

DON’T WAIT FOR TIME TO HEAL

When it comes to how long it will take to heal and feel ‘normal again’ there are no fixed times or guidelines and there is no such thing as normal. There are people who seem to have it all together weeks after burying their child only to have a complete nervous break-down ten years later and then there are people who work through their grief layer by layer as and when they are ready. Is time really a healer? No, it’s a myth. All time does is pass. It’s only action within that time that really counts. I know people who have waited 5, 10 and even 20 years to feel better. When grief is pushed aside, bottled up and not spoken about it’s just a matter of time before it can come back – and often with a vengeance.

DO TAKE CARE OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Having helped thousands of couples now to save their marriage, a sad but true fact is that many couples that have lost a child have then gone on to get a divorce. Time and time again I have worked with people whose marriage was falling apart after their child passed away. The stress and strains that a loss can have on a relationship is immense and if both partners have different ways of

grieving and don’t understand and accept that, it can be the breeding ground for arguments and conflict. For example, one partner might throw themselves into work in order to cope and the other might completely withdraw and have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. One might want to put the past behind them by moving to a new house, area or country, the other might want to keep everything the same. Whatever your strategy is for coping, if you’re fighting more than usual get help from a specialist before it’s too late. Try doing things together, this can often help keep the connection. For example, walks along the beach, feeding and bath time, and cuddling on the sofa to a feel-good movie. Plenty of hugs and other displays of affection are also definitely the way forward. HYPNOTHERAPY: This can also be powerful to forgive yourself, live and let go. I typically create a hypnosis track for every person I help, where I create a track to help them sleep naturally, trust life again, let go of regret and to love themselves; enabling the body and mind to relax. I then give them the track to listen to anytime they need to feel calm or sleep. If you go for the hypnotherapy option, make sure your hypnotherapist gives you a recording as hypnotherapy works best when it is repeated. If you are having any frozen image’s or painful memories of the experience or wondering if you will ever feel normal again or can’t stand to be around other people that are talking about trivial things, then definitely talk to someone to offload this too. Lastly and most importantly, love and forgive yourself. Many women blame themselves and this makes it harder to heal. Self-compassion is the only true way we can heal the pain of loss.

Tried & Tested Pamper yourself and enjoy ‘me-time’ at the spa

Medi Diamond Facial treatment program, Cleopatra’s Spa

Pastels Salon

Cleopatra’s Spa is hands-down one of the finest spas that still exists from back in the day. The launch of their latest treatment brought to our attention diamonds, facial, and cleansing - three trigger words that excite us. And so, we headed there to indulge in this treatment using Medi-Diamond products, a Koreanskincare range, and really just get some shut-eye while the therapist works her magic. Here, you slip into your robe, and head to the room to lay down on a heated bed. The facial begins with a thorough cleanse using an enzyme powder with colloidal diamond particles. Once the face is washed, and cleansed with a warm cloth, the eye area is cleaned to remove all traces of makeup. Soon after, a steam is applied after which

the extraction (blackhead removal) takes place – it sounds gross but I kind of like it. The best part of the treatment is towards the end. First, a thick hydrating and whitening - or anti-aging - mask is applied all over the face – of course with colloidal diamond powder to not only boost your skin with antioxidants, but also heal and protect it from pollution, antiaging and skin problems. Once taken off, your skin instantly feels clean, and a mist containing serum, toner and amino acids is sprayed all over your face and neck to boost collagen. Eye cream and sunscreen (SPF 50) is placed on and it’s time to look into the mirror. In all honesty, your face glows. It almost looks like you have a filter or foundation on it, it’s unbelievable.. The weather is better, your attire evolves, and your makeup changes? So why not your hair? For me, this time of year calls for a new hair-do – I usually prefer long hair, and go for warm tones, and anything to make my locks as glossy and hydrated as possible. I spoke to Georgia May (my stylist) who told me I’d need four hours for my makeover. It began with a comb through, and me going through a few looks to choose my colour tone and shape. A chocolate-brown was recommended, something that would conceal the dry blondish streaks – the end result of my colour from just over eight months ago. Georgia mixed in a Smart bond

product from L’Oreal to the colour, to hydrate and bond my hair instantly. It worked! After applying two colours to my hair – at the top and bottom – it was washed and dried for the cut. Dining In The City Hotspots ideal for little ones and adults

GAUCHO, DIFC

Argentina is famed for meat and grape, and this fine-dining outpost at DIFC that houses everything Argentinian, doesn’t disappoint. On a school night, Gaucho - known amongst Dubai’s residents as one of the top steakhouses – is buzzing with couples, a bevy of friends, and men from the financial district discussing business over delectable pieces of meat. The décor is opulent, comprising a dining space clad with zebra print, lush rugs and a blatantly masculine vibe with leather, dark tones, and a ten-metre floor-to-ceiling wine vault that garners all attraction. We opted for the new a la carte menu featuring a hot trio of empanadas with beef, provolone and onions and creamed corn to begin with. In all honesty, you will love the meat sold at Gaucho, whether it’s in an empanada, or served hot on a platter. If you decide to share one appetizer, make sure it’s the braised beef back ribs. The tender, melt-in-your-mouth ribs are doused in a moreish hoisin and chilli orange sauce, topped with sesame seeds, fresh orange and pickled jalapenos. Another one to try is

the lobster taco served with simple fresh ingredients and lemon juice drizzled all over. For mains, savour the churrasco de lomo (spiral cut lean and tender filet marinated for 48 hours with garlic, parsley and olive oil). You can have it medium-rare (which we did) or well done – which was quite a surprise when the staff mentioned this to us – as the meat stays succulent and juicy no matter the temperature. Complement this with chimichurri or peppercorn sauce,

TING IRIE

Saturday nights are all about homecooked-style comfort food, relaxed dining, and a great vibe. That’s exactly what you get at this vibrant, yet cosy, restaurant at Downtown Dubai. Ting Irie’s Caribbean Daze menu focuses on some of the region’s specialties, and you may want to try them all. For starters, try the Phalourie (crisp chickpea fritters with a soft centre) served with a sweet-tangy tamarind chutney. Stew-lovers will love diving into the crab and callaloo; a Trini stew with pumpkin, carrot, baby spinach and fresh crab – nourishing and absolutely delish. For a dish that’s a bit more substantial, feast on the Belize beef stew with chunky, tender pieces of meat in a thick gravy with carrot and potatoes, and the Float with Buljol, the street-food specialty that stole

the show. The Bajan float is a semi-crisp fluffy taco-style bread filled with saltfish, cabbage, peppers, and tomatoes. One of our favourites was also the cou cou and seabass with rich coconut milk, cornmeal and okra, which makes for a hearty main course. Great food coupled with Caribbean tunes, it doesn’t get any better than this on a Saturday night Contact +971 4 557 5601

and sides such as sweet potato fries, soft and fluffy oven-baked gnocchi with black truffle and cheese sauce, and my favourite - the humita saltena (creamed corn with mozzarella and basil, served in a corn husk). Leave space for the decadent and velvety dulce de leche cheesecake topped with toasted marshmallow, which makes you feel nostalgic for camping days. QUEENS GRILL, QE2 Get a taste of the original menu the Queen dined on in 1969, at the newly launched Queens Grill on-board the QE2. If you’re looking to impress your other half, or visitors from out of town, this nine-course menu will do the job. Make sure you don’t have any other plans for the night though, as the meal is a good three-to four-hours affair.

It commences with plump pan-seared scallops on a bed of cauliflower puree with bacon crumbs and parmesan bubbles for texture. Once you whet your appetite, you may find yourself reaching for the bread basket to smear some of the divine thick and buttery foie gras parfait with jelly, pickled rhubarb and hazel nut crumble. All dishes are beautifully presented, comprising textures and harmonising notes. We won’t ruin the surprise for you by mentioning the dishes in great length – some of the others were milk-fed lamb loin, dover sole salad, and butter roasted halibut – and instead

focus on the highlights of the meal, such as the tender roast baby chicken with wilted buttered samphire and morels jus – you will love the accompanying mushroom gravy. Another highly commended dish was the Welsh rarebit; a cheddar sandwich with caramelised onion and fruit bread, which tasted similar to a hearty grilled cheese

toasty. For the perfect end to the meal, you will find yourself polishing off the malt chocolate tart with salted caramel, and of course sipping a cup of tea in true English style. Details: Dhs875 per person for food, and Dhs1,475 with beverage pairing. Contact +9714 526 8888

PEPPERMILL, THE DUBAI MALL

For a casual Indian meal with a sophisticated ambience, Peppermill - tucked into a corner away from the hustle and bustle of the mall - is one to visit. We love the fact that the mall finally has a family-friendly Indian restaurant that isn’t in their bustling food court, and the menu here, is apt for those who love Indian flavours with a contemporary twist. Quench your thirst with the Memsaab’s Marigold, where a tray is brought over with nonalcoholic sparkling wine and a few accessories. The grapefruit concentrate is topped off with bubbles and sprayed with rose water mist before you embark on a sensory journey of India. For starters, we tucked into the chicken sev puri (crisp mini pieces of flat bread topped with a chicken mixture, chutney and passion fruit yoghurt), and korma lamb chops that feature a lip-smacking fennel and saffron scented korma jus with sous vide Kashmiri style lamb chops – when it’s cooked sous vide, you know its

tender to the bone. Kebab-lovers will enjoy the mild-spicy seekh kebab that are similar to those cooked at a food-stall in India. The spicy minced lamb skewers arrive on a spinach roomali roti (soft flatbread) with caramelized onions for a hint of sweetness. Mains are sharing-style too, and we tried methi malai murg (boneless chicken with cashew malai foam and masala); and brisket laal maas. The latter tasted similar to bacon, with soft US prime smoked beef brisket presented on a spicy, delightful gravy of dried chilli and yoghurt. We’re pretty sure you won’t come across this dish elsewhere, and it pairs exquisitely with garlic and butter naan. Desserts are just as important as mains in an Indian restaurant, and you don’t want to miss the rich ras malai saffronsoaked cake topped with cream cheese and crushed orange ladoo. A cup of karak chai to complete the meal, and you’re ready to set off on your shopping spree. Visit peppermill.ae

SKIING IN

COURCHEVEL

Gear up for ski season with this enlightening family-holiday experience from Rowena Carr-Allinson It’s true what they say about kids, you can make two, raise them the same (sort of) but they turn out to be totally different people. Case in point my daughter on her very first Alpine trip. My son who adores skiing, and all things snow, was raring to go when the annual winter trip came around. Where better I thought, to introduce our little princess to her first baby ski steps than in Courchevel, the most glam of all French resorts? I thought she’d do well amidst the champagne bars and diamante encrusted Ugg boots. But, as we found out, this particular kid was nothing like her sibling. It was a dream set up. We booked into the rather plush Residence le C in Courchevel Moriond, also known as 1650. Set lower down the mountainside, it’s become known 58 | NOVEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

as the more ‘down to earth’ Courchevel, where you can still find a taste of authenticity. Because, let’s face it, walking in ski boots is torture, the resort is cleverly huddled around indoor escalators that whizz you from accommodation to high street and onto the slopes. So far, so good. Our lovely chalet apartment was set a stone’s throw away from the escalator making accessing the slopes a doddle, in under ten minutes. With a cosy ski room downstairs, it was easy peasy to drop off skis and all the gear with minimum faffing. Lennox (six) took to the routine easily and the plan was that while he took morning ski lessons (in English) with the excellent folk at New Generation Ski School, we would take the opportunity to give Tess (two) her first baby-steps on the white stuff.

TRAVEL Moriond Racing luging track at 1650. Running along 3km with 8 tunnels, it shoots down 450 meters, and although (or because?) he went with dad, he got more thrills than he could handle! Throughout the season, the ESF also organises treasure hunts, and giant snowball fights. We lucked out catching their Fireworks Week, so every night the sky was lit up – while we oooed and aaahed from our cosy chalet.

On a friendlier budget, our residence, Le C also had its own swanky restaurant with kid’s menus and lovely giant tapas plates, ranging from a huge cheese platter to the ‘Chinoiserie’ tempura and spring rolls, to deep fried calamari. Just like in the apartment, the décor is uber chic – all designer furniture in rich woods and leather, crackling fire and dim lighting oozing style.

To see how the other half, or possibly quarter, or less live – we nip up to Courchevel 1850 with the free shuttle, snaking through the picturesque landscape - all snowdrifts and pine trees.

The chalet triggered all kinds of interior goals lust, with its mocha sofas strewn with heavy, soft furry throws, faux shearling pillows and a giant TV on each wall - not to mention in the kid’s cute bunk room. Even the kitchen was enviable, with its super speedy induction hob, ideal for whipping up the morning porridge or pasta delights for the kids. With three bedrooms, all en suite slick contemporary stone-clad bathrooms and l’Occitane with bubbles – it felt spacious and sophisticated. And, with a welcome of rather fine bubbles of a different type – a bottle from the maison Henriot to say bienvenue I have to admit they had me at “Bonjour”.

The millionaires’ playground is packed with mega chalets and six star-hotels, designer boutiques selling Fendi ski suits and other essentials like Cartier, Vuitton and Chanel. This parallel universe has its perks though, like the slinky spas where you can indulge, even if you’re not a hotel guest. Book a treatment at the Barriere Les Neiges, for example, and enjoy the giant sleek spa and a complimentary transfer from the village to the hotel, so you arrive feeling special already. Not too shabby.

CULINARY OFFERINGS The weather threw a slight spanner in the works with biting -12C temperatures (to which you can add the wind chill factor) and non-stop snow that our daughter deemed extremely offensive. She took to the gear (accessories are a plus), but refused to glide – either on skis or on sledge. Even prompted by her hero brother, there was no way. The only ski related activity she went for was the shared plate of ‘frites’ at the Rotisserie bar to defrost Lennox post-lesson. For her, it’s already all about the apres. I get it, and I can’t really say I disagree. I’m a ‘fair weather’ skier too… Thankfully Courchevel has heaps of activities to keep kids entertained both on and off the snow. The ski school at 1850 is part of a medieval themed ‘village’ designed specifically for kids. The largest in France, it’s spread over 12 acres with castles and tunnels built in. It’s also the place to book an introduction to skiing with your little one, though classes don’t start until age 3. Perhaps we’ll have better luck next year? Lennox was game to try the brand new

This is also the place to head for a romantic date night if you love your gourmet treats. With eight Michelin starred tables in town, 1850 raises the culinary stakes. Those who like their truffle risotto and foie gras should head to the swanky Comptoir de l’Apogée. The dimly lit restaurant is refined, and the staff offer excellent service. Don’t miss an “apero” by the fireplace in the bar, where the drinks come with the best truffle cashew nuts I’ve ever tasted. Possibly worth the visit alone? Try Nama at the Aman Le Melezin for sushi, where you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the land of the rising sun. Nama translates as ‘raw’ and Master chef Keiji Matoba’s menu boasts washoku cuisine, elevating sushi to an art form. Truly impressive. Another sought after address in town is the bijou Le Bizan at Les Grandes Alpes where Japanese is on the menu with mouth-watering blackened cod, Australian wagyu beef and tuna belly tartar with caviar, of course. The incredible sommelier, Stefano - who is utterly passionate about his trade - will also pair the finest of wines with each course for a truly unforgettable experience.

A must do off-piste? The Aquamotion, Europe’s largest aquafun-center! With amusements for all ages, crazy slides, indoor surfing and baby pools with plenty of toys, it’s ideal to spend a few hours, whatever age the kids are. Lennox was hooked on the 110 metre wild river ride judging it “very wild indeed.”

The Friday Market brunch at Sim Sim is one not-to-be-missed. juicy and tender – and kebabs. You can also head to the courtyard to try drinks paired with food such as caviar and oysters. For dessert, leave space for the bubble waffle – this is probably the only brunch in the city where you can find it – and fill it with caramel, chocolate, or pistachio gelato.
